It’s Mothers’ Day, Week, Month, Year!

Marie Coronel, morning reporter for ABC 10News, is featured this month (page 16), sharing how she balances work with family life. Mother’s Day is May 14. Every day should be Mom’s Day! Make her feel appreciated, honored, loved and respected. My family spends Mother’s Day at Gator by the Bay. It’s a fun annual festival for all ages with live music, dancing, activities for kids and delicious Cajun food. The 4-1-1 on Head Start Programs for Preschoolers

Kids learn how to interact with others and take fun field trips together. Head Start also provides healthy meals and snacks, along with important physical and mental health screenings (including vision and dental).

Families who qualify also benefit from prenatal and postpartum support, along with informative parenting classes. Carson explains that equipping parents and guardians with the necessary knowledge and skills can help ensure the best possible outcomes for everyone involved.

Who is eligible for Head Start?

• Income-eligible children from birth to age 5 (Income is based on federal poverty guidelines.)

• Foster children (regardless of foster family’s income)

• Homeless families

• Children raised by grandparents or other relatives

• Families receiving TANF, SSI, WIC or SNAP (CalFresh) benefits

Proof of U.S. citizenship is not required.

Where are Head Start services provided?

Head Start programs are offered in all 50 states and U.S. territories, including Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Along with home-based services, there are more than 140 centers across San Diego County.

What else do I need to know?

While most experts agree that preschool is an important element of a child’s education, many local families are already struggling to meet basic needs like food and shelter. In other words, preschool tuition isn’t even on the radar.

Fortunately, there’s help available. Head Start programs provide a range of federally-funded services to preschool children of low-income families. These include homebased services (birth to 3 years) and center-based preschool programs (ages 3–5), as well as healthy food options, medical screenings and parenting classes.

Below, we cover the many benefits of Head Start programs, who is eligible for services, and how to apply.

What are the benefits of Head Start programs?

“Head Start programs prepare young children to succeed in school and in life beyond school,” says Damon Carson, general manager of Neighborhood House Association (parent organization of Head Start programs). “To achieve this, Head Start programs deliver services to children and families in core areas of early learning, health and family well-being while engaging parents as partners every step of the way.”

Through Head Start, preschool children are exposed to math, science, art, language, drama and cultural activities.

• “For over 50 years, Head Start has been considered the premier early childhood program in this country,” says Carson. “It is a program that offers numerous resources in beautiful settings where children and families can thrive. Parent participation and input is welcome at every level of the program from the school setting to the board room.”

Meet Marie Coronel San Diego news reporter and mom extraordinaire

a journalist, avid Padres fan and mother of three boys.

Born and raised in San Diego’s South Bay, Coronel was the only child of parents who immigrated from the Philippines. Surrounded by extended family, she trained in many forms of dance, performing at Del Mar Fairgrounds and venues all over the country. She especially enjoyed Philippine folk dancing as it provided a connection to her culture—but she knew her career path lay elsewhere.

“I’ve always wanted to be a reporter— even as a little girl,” Coronel explains. “My parents bought me one of those

from Cal State Northridge. In college, she had internships doing everything from anchoring news segments at the campus radio station to learning about TV production on the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show. After graduation, Coronel landed a behind-the-scenes job at KTNV in Las Vegas, where she discovered the ins-and-outs of newsgathering. Then, she moved to Maryland for her first onair position, where she met her husband, John, on a story. (Their first encounter was televised!) Finally, she moved back to San Diego to report for the station she grew up watching: ABC 10News.

Now Coronel is mom to Joseph (11), Patrick (9) and Christopher (5). Like

many working parents, she possesses strong organizational skills to juggle life’s busy schedule. A typical work day involves getting up at 2 a.m., doing her own hair and make-up, peeking in on her sleeping boys, then heading to the station to meet with her news team. Some days, they leave immediately to cover breaking news.

Coronel typically sneaks in a morning call to her family as they eat breakfast. At the end of her work day, after giving an 11 a.m. live news report, she heads home, has lunch with her live-in mother, and runs errands before the kids get out of school.

“This is where it gets tricky,” Coronel confesses. “All three boys are in afterschool activities and they all play sports. So, I usually have a group text or conversation with my mom and husband about who goes where at what time and who is picking up which kid. After practices, we try to have dinner as a family.”

Weekends are spent at the boys’ baseball, soccer and basketball games. “We always make an effort to get family time in there,” she says. “It might be lunch or dinner after a game. We rotate on who gets to pick the restaurant. If we have a [longer] break, we like taking family walks/hikes or we attend an event [together]. A lot of these ideas come from San Diego Family Magazine!”

The whole family loves to cheer on the Padres, carrying on traditions from Coronel’s own childhood. Her dad, who has since passed, owned a collection of old-school Padres hats that the boys now take turns wearing to games, including those during spring training.

“A memory I will always cherish is the Padres game versus the Dodgers, when the Friars clinched the NLDS,” she says.

“I had already been scheduled to anchor the news that evening, so I had to miss watching the game with my family. To still feel connected to the family I brought one of my dad’s hats to work. As a native San Diegan and lifelong Padres fan, it was so cool to share the news about the Padres win with our viewers. After the newscast, I put my dad’s hat on and took a picture on the anchor desk.”

Balancing a career with family isn’t always easy, but Coronel is grateful for the support of her husband and mom. She says getting up so early interferes with certain activities and it is challenging to take mornings off for school-related events. But she volunteers for a school news program in the afternoons.

“Even though professionally my life can be very busy, I always find those moments with my kids,” she says. Such as helping with homework, chatting over frozen yogurt, and cheering on the boys during games.

What does your ideal Mother’s Day look like?

My ideal Mother’s Day involves being with my kids, my husband and my mom. I absolutely love the homemade cards or cards they pick out and decorate. It makes my eyes watery to see how much effort they put into those. While they are young, it makes me feel good to know they appreciate all that we do for them. ~

Camp is More Essential than Ever

One thing parents probably agree on is that kids have missed out on important growth opportunities over the past several years. With the most acute stage of the pandemic behind us, the time has finally come to fill in some of those gaps. One way to accomplish this is to send your kids to summer camp.

Some of the social-emotional benefits of summer camp include regaining a sense of social connectedness, trying new activities, improving self-confidence, discovering better communication skills, and making new friends. At many camps, kids also experience a boost in physical health. Below, we take a deep dive into the reasons why summer camp is more essential than ever.

Social Connectedness

When social isolation was initially recommended to slow the spread of COVID-19, most of us didn’t understand how deeply this behavior would impact today’s youth.

“Over the last couple of years, we have noticed that children tend to have a harder time interacting and relating socially to others, engaging in abstract thinking, and coping with stress,” says Robyn Higgins, education and tours manager at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “We have seen this manifest in a variety of ways during camp as children have begun to relearn and practice some of these skills. For instance, children may have a harder time adapting when a planned activity changes, or it may take them longer to connect with other campers.”

At summer camp, children are able to regain a sense of interconnectedness with their surrounding communities as they practice face-to-face communication skills, meet new people, develop friendships, and bond over common interests and activities.

Growth Mindset

When it comes to post-pandemic kids, the inability to experience life with a growth mindset is another area of concern. Children who possess a growth mindset understand that skills and abilities can be improved with sufficient time and effort. Those lacking this approach often lack the self-confidence required to move past life’s inevitable failures and tackle new challenges. Summer camp can help kids expand their mindset.

“At camp, we see the power in meeting and working with new friends,” says Elle Muse, recreation supervisor of Seaside Day Camps in Encinitas. “Whether it is that small bit of competition or encouragement from those around you, these interactions help children get out of their own heads and work through new experiences to create self-confidence.”

Opportunities to Try New Things

“Opportunities to try new things is one of the most valuable benefits of summer camp and has the greatest impact on children who are returning to camp after the pandemic,” says Muse. She explains that camp inherently creates a new environment and experience, placing children outside their comfort zone.

Depending on which camp you choose, new opportunities may involve physical activities like hiking, rock climbing, archery or horseback riding; alternatively, kids may be exposed to more cerebral activities such as using unfamiliar materials for art projects, experimenting with STEM concepts and learning new campfire songs.

To be clear, placing kids outside of their comfort zone is rarely a bad thing when it’s in a safe environment. Kids can develop new skills, discover new passions, enjoy independence and adventure, and experience boosts in self-confidence and self-esteem.

well-intentioned (but often harmful) instincts to swoop in and over-manage their child’s life. If this sounds familiar, it’s not too late to correct it. Rest assured that summer camp can provide a safe and separate space for kids to learn how to think independently, make their own decisions and learn from their mistakes.

“Summer camp encourages children to engage in discovery, exploration and problem-solving, ultimately supporting their holistic growth and development as they navigate the world,” says Higgins.

To further foster your child’s independence, be sure to allow their participation when choosing summer camp programs.

Physical Activity

With kids spending more time than ever indoors and on screens, it’s no surprise that there is a childhood obesity epidemic. According to the CDC, obesity now affects about one in five kids—and things aren’t heading in the right direction.

Summer camp can help kids achieve or maintain a healthy weight, along with developing greater physical stamina and endurance, through fun activities like hiking, swimming and outdoor games. If your child plays (or wants to play) year-round sports, programs focused on building sportspecific skills may be a particularly good fit.

Keep in mind that not only can camp boost physical fitness, it also leads to improvements in mental health and well-being. As Muse so aptly observes, “Camp is the place where building new friendships and learning emotional intelligence is disguised by fun.”

Notes from Camp: What I learned at Raintree Ranch

At 9 years old, I was one of the youngest campers headed for Raintree Ranch, an overnight YMCA camp in Julian. Approaching the sign-in desk with my parents and sister, I felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement. This will be the longest I’ve ever been away from my family, I thought. I soon discovered that the busy, fun-filled week would leave no room for homesickness. I was about to embark on an adventure that would have a lasting impact.

We found my assigned cabin and I chose a top bunk, introducing myself to the girl unpacking her things below. Saying goodbye to my family, I already felt empowered by the independence of an overnight camp experience. As I settled in and got to know the girls in my cabin, I found new friends in my peers and counselors. At the very least, we had a common interest—horses. I was inspired to keep up with the older kids when it came to horseback riding skills. We learned about different gaits (walk, trot, canter, gallop), horse anatomy, how to tackup and get horses ready for riding, and how to groom, feed and take care of them. We also enjoyed traditional camp life—archery, swimming, songs, team games, skits and campfires. I left camp that summer

with a newfound sense of independence and appreciation for teamwork, my peers and, of course, horses. It was awesome! I couldn’t wait to return the following year.

Now that I’m 22, I know that disconnecting from the outside world those two summers allowed me to connect with nature and animals in a different way. I learned that working hard yields results and rewards; all of those early mornings “tacking-up” the horses meant

an opportunity for trail rides and lessons in the arena. Since the camp is designed for every learning level, kids advance at their own pace. We tried new things, improved existing skills and mastered others.

The experiences at Raintree Ranch taught me that breaking out of my shell reaped unexpected benefits. Living with people who were similar, yet so different, taught me to problem-solve,

collaborate and discover how I fit into the new, unique dynamic. I wanted to emulate the leadership qualities that my camp counselors and peers demonstrated. Working with others and having responsibilities at camp laid the groundwork for the life experiences that followed.

In college I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Glasgow, Scotland, where many of the experiences were similar to camp life. I was able to fully immerse myself and build connections with students from Scotland, Canada, Hong Kong, Italy, France and other parts of the world. Friendships that were formed with students from various backgrounds and cultures mirrored those made at camp—we bonded over similarities and learned from our differences.

Even my education and professional experience revolve around collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and fostering meaningful connections. I currently work as a Behavioral Health Associate at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. I’ve developed a passion for working with children and encouraging them to pursue new experiences, just as I did at summer camp as a child. v

Healthy Routines for Busy Families

School holidays like summer vacation and spring break can make it tricky to stick with healthy habits.

Just picture this: Extra screen time, more snacking, and staying up late. Having a routine in place can make it possible to prioritize the habits that matter most to you, while still enjoying the relaxed schedule. Kids thrive on routine, and planning for healthy habits can help improve health and wellbeing for the whole family, even during busy seasons.

Having a schedule doesn’t mean having every moment of the day planned out, but rather, it helps to create a game plan for the family by incorporating the healthy habits you would like to prioritize. For example, consider a plan for when to use screen time, when to exercise or have outdoor play time, and how often you want to commit to eating meals as a family. Planning ahead can make it easier to follow through and create habits that stick.

Here are three routines that can improve the health of the whole family:

The meal and snack routine

Eating at the table on a set schedule can prevent grazing and can also ensure kids are hungry at mealtime, meaning they are more likely to eat their meal and try new foods -- a win-win if you have a picky eater! If your child is schoolaged, try following the meal schedule that they have at school. If not, come up with a schedule that works best for your family. Having a schedule can help to redirect the conversation when kids are frequently asking for snacks. When kids eat at the table without screens, they are able to tune into their hunger and fullness cues more effectively (versus eating distractedly in front of a screen).

The bedtime routine

An evening routine before bed can help kids begin to wind down and can promote more restful sleep. Having the same bedtime every night, as well as turning off screens one hour before bedtime, can help to improve sleep and make it easier to fall asleep. A bedtime routine can be simple! If you need some ideas, think of the five Bs – bathe, brush teeth, book, breathe, and bed! A calming connection with your child before bed (like reading

a few books and taking some deep breaths together) makes it more likely they are ready to rest when it’s time for lights out.

The family meal routine

Eating as a family is one of the healthiest habits families can create. Kids who eat with the family at least three times per week have improved nutrition, get better grades, are less stressed, and have more confidence. If your family is busy with various activities at dinner time, try to have weekend meals or breakfast together instead.

Creating longlasting

health habits starts with one small change at a time. Focus on the habit that is most important to you and build from there!

Charcuterie boards are all the rage, and understandably so. A platter of snacks and treats thoughtfully placed on a decorative board—what’s not to love?

This Mother’s Day, consider treating Mom to a DIY charcuterie board, like this one from local food blogger, The Seaside Baker, who uses nine-inch wooden box letters (from a local craft store) to spell out M-O-M. She features a different theme in each: pastries, snacks and desserts. It’s all about arrangement (and using a variety of colors and textures). Feel free to substitute or add just about anything. Follow our tips and tricks and give it a whirl.

Consider different flavor profiles (sweet, salty, spicy).

Fill small, decorative bowls with dips or jam or snacks such as dark chocolate, pretzels or honeycomb to add dimension and interest to the display.

Prosciutto and salami are popular meats.

Don’t like olives? Consider nuts, pickles or artichoke hearts.

Love berries? Include several types (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries).

Including a small bottle of champagne, wine or sparkling cider is a fun idea and works well in the “M” shaped box.
