Welcome to the 23rd annual publication of San Diego’s Out & About with Kids!
If you have lived in San Diego County for some time, are new to the area or are visiting from out of town, you will enjoy this publication. It is organized by neighborhoods in North County, San Diego Central, East County and South Bay. Check page 5 to find all the communities included, then flip to each section to discover fun things to do there. The county map on page 4 may be helpful.
Every year we research the best family activities, updating and adding new locations, so the information is as updated as possible at the time of publication. It’s a great idea to call each location for hours and cost (if any) before you leave home.
We want to thank Joshua’s Pest Control and Soapy Joe’s for their continued sponsorship and all the advertisers in this publication. They help make it possible to publish and provide the guide for free. Thank them for their support.
Out & About with Kids is published once a year, so hold on to it. Put it in the glove box of your car so you can find it when you’re ready to explore.
Happy touring!

When it comes to delicious dining experiences, San Diego has plenty of culinary creativity to offer. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual bite with the kids or something more upscale for a night on the town, we have the inside scoop to discovering your family’s new favorite spot.
No visit to San Diego is complete without a “taco tour” of local hotspots like Tacos El Gordo in the Gaslamp or Chula Vista and Food Network featured ¡Salud Tacos! in Barrio Logan.
Where to Eat
If Asian cuisine is what you’re craving, head to the Convoy District in Kearny Mesa. Enjoy traditional Taiwanese temptations at Formoosa, dive into delectable soup dumplings at Facing East Noodle & Bar or slurp some savory noodles at Tajima Ramen House. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert! Family favorites include Somi Somi for soft serve, Up2You Café and Boba Bar.
San Diego’s Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods offer a variety of eateries for families. Head to Portside Pier on the Embarcadero for waterfront dining, walk-up coffee and gelato, and easy access to Seaport Village,
Waterfront Park and the USS Midway.
If Italian fare is more your family’s style, head to Little Italy to discover a new favorite ristorante. Dine al fresco at Allegro or enjoy Northern Italian street food at Monello, where pizza and pasta are plentiful. Or, grab a bite at Burger Lounge where kids eat free every Tuesday. End the evening with a sweet treat from a specialty dessert shop. Tempt your taste buds at Extraordinary Desserts or choose a colorful confection at Holy Paleta, where Mexicanstyle ice cream bars delight all ages. Buon Appetito!
Find more local spots where kids eat free at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/kids-eat-free/ kids-eat-free.
How to Get Around
for veterans and San Diego residents.
It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey, right? The answer may depend on how you choose to get around San Diego. Whether your family is on a mission to see all the sights or would rather spend time soaking up the journey, San Diego has transportation options to suit your needs.
trip and search for departure times. Enjoy an easy ride to favorite destinations like Old Town and Little Italy or from one area of the county to another.
Climb aboard the Old Town Trolley for a fun, narrated excursion that includes 11 popular spots to explore with hop-on, hop-off privileges. Ask about special nighttime tours and promotional offers
The Coronado Ferry takes passengers across the bay from Broadway Pier or the Convention Center to Coronado Ferry Landing, where families can shop, eat and explore. Enjoy stunning views of the San Diego skyline and the iconic Coronado Bridge on the relaxing, 15-minute excursion.
Enjoy the beautiful coastline from downtown to Solana Beach or Oceanside via Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner. Spend a day in one of San Diego’s charming seaside towns or head further up the coast to San Juan Capistrano or Los Angeles.
Choosing where to stay when you’re on vacation (or want to feel like you are) can be overwhelming—and San Diego has no shortage of accommodations. Mission Bay hotels and resorts are very popular as they offer an iconic San Diego experience—close to beaches, Belmont Park, SeaWorld and 12 miles of flat, paved paths, perfect for bikes, strollers and scooters. We recommend several: San Diego Mission Bay Resort features a large, bayfront
Where to Stay
pool, a toddler wading pool, and a continuous schedule of fun, yearround activities for kids and adults; Paradise Point Resort & Spa offers tranquil bungalowstyle rooms with garden or waterfront views; the Polynesian-themed Catamaran Resort & Spa boasts koi ponds, exotic birds and a summertime Sunset Luau—all hits with guests; the Bahia Resort Hotel is home to the Bahia Belle sternwheeler (sunset cruise across the bay, anyone?) and a “hidden” harbor seal habitat.
Is your vacation all about the kids? Consider a stay at one of two LEGOLAND properties—LEGOLAND Hotel
or Castle Hotel, both located at the theme park in the fun community of Carlsbad.
RV campers and glampers will want to explore the familyfriendly amenities and deluxe furnished cabins at San Diego Metro KOA and Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay (both located in Chula Vista/South Bay). Those who prefer to “head for the hills” may enjoy a peaceful mountain bed & breakfast in Julian or a tent site or rustic cabin at Lake Cuyamaca or William Heise County Park.
If a quirky Airbnb without electricity or Wi-Fi is up your alley, look up the hobbit house in Ramona, but note that it only accommodates two people.
San Diego is known for sunny days and 70 miles of Pacific Coast sand and surf, but there’s family fun even beyond the beaches. Our 4,300-square-mile county is home to many diverse neighborhoods, each with its own culture and history. From coastal communities to inland valleys, there’s something for every kind of adventurer. Whether you’re an outdoor trekker, thrill seeker, food fanatic or mountain mama, you’ll have a blast getting to know San Diego County.
Out & About: San Diego with Kids (an annual publication of San Diego Family Magazine) is an awesome guide to where the locals like to hang out and play. Flip to page 4 for an overview of the county, then browse the following neighborhoods (North County Coastal, North County Inland, San Diego Coastal, Uptown/Downtown, San Diego Central, East County and South Bay). Gather the family, mark a few fun spots and start planning your adventures.
