The word legacy is not one to be used lightly. To really “hand something down to future generations” that is meaningful and lasting is no small feat, but that is exactly what Jahja Ling has accomplished with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Jahja came to our orchestra at a most vulnerable time in its history, which also became its most important moment. Jahja Ling will be credited for identifying and hiring more than 65 members of the San Diego Symphony, and for coalescing this new generation of musicians into an impressive, artistically excellent and homogenous ensemble. He did not, as some might have, merely look at this as a stepping stone in his career. He understood the potential to create a vibrant, sonically powerful and artistically flexible ensemble that would become a centerpiece of San Diego’s cultural life. The 2016-17 Photo Credit: Lauren Radack season celebrates Jahja’s San Diego legacy in works that he has chosen reflecting milestones in the Orchestra’s history, as well as those that look to the future. He is joined by premiere international soloists who have performed with him in his years as Music Director, and who wanted to return to San Diego to share in the celebration of his musical life here. In creating the 2016-17 season we aspire to bring to you, our audience, musical works that stimulate your curiosity, that surprise and delight you, and that transport you emotionally and spiritually. It is said that music speaks where mere words leave off, and I have often found this to be true. Our 2016-17 season is designed with you in the forefront of our minds and imagination. Come with us on our musical journey, and see where it takes you. Sincerely,

Martha A. Gilmer Chief Executive Officer

Frequently Asked Questions How should I dress for a Symphony performance? Does the Symphony have a dress code? The San Diego Symphony does not have a dress code for regular performances. Dress for performances usually varies from casual to cocktail attire. Gala events may have a black tie/formal dress guideline. Also, as a courtesy to your fellow patrons, be conservative with perfumes and scents. Is there public transportation near the Jacobs Music Center? There is a Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) trolley stop just a few blocks from the Jacobs Music Center. The Fifth Avenue stop (C Street between Sixth and Fifth) serves both the Blue Line and the Orange Line. Also, there are MTS bus lines that serve nearby Broadway, Fifth Avenue and Fourth Avenue. Adjacent stations are several walking blocks away from Jacobs Music Center. What is the ticket exchange policy? All subscribers my exchange tickets within their series for free. Single ticket buyers may exchange for a $5.00 per ticket exchange fee. Ticket purchases may not be refunded. Does the San Diego Symphony offer group sales discounts? Discount tickets for groups are available for both subscription and non-subscription concerts (excluding non-Symphony events) for as few as 10 individuals in some cases. For further information, please call 619.615.3941. What is San Diego Symphony’s children’s policy? Jacobs Masterworks, Gala Concerts, and Chamber Series: Only children ages five years and up will be allowed into the concert

hall. These children must have a ticket and be able to sit in an un-accompanied seat. Jazz @ The Jacobs, Special Concerts and Fox Theatre Film Series:: Only children ages two and up will be allowed into the concert hall and they must have a ticket and be able to sit in a seat. Family Concerts: Families will be happy to know that children and babies two years old and younger who are accompanied by a parent will be allowed into the concert hall for free. They must be held by an adult and may not occupy a seat. Children ages three years and older must have a ticket and be able to sit in a seat. What happens if I have tickets I will be unable to use for an upcoming San Diego Symphony concert? If you cannot use a ticket for an upcoming concert, we would very much appreciate it if you could donate that ticket back to the Ticket Office several days in advance for a potential resale. You can also mail tickets to 1245 7th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101 (Attn: Ticket Office). Tickets should be turned in anytime up to 24 hours in advance of your concert. A receipt will be mailed acknowledging your tax-deductible contribution. We are unable to accept any tickets for tax deduction purposes after the concert has begun or passed. How long are most San Diego Symphony performances? Performance times vary, but generally last somewhere between 2 to 2.5 hours, including intermission. Family Concerts generally last approximately 45 minutes to 70 minutes, with no intermission. How can I learn more about the music pieces being performed on a concert? Patrons holding tickets to our Jacobs Masterworks Series concerts are invited to come early for “What’s the Score?”, a pre-performance talk given by Nuvi Mehta beginning 45 minutes prior to all Masterworks programs. Program notes for Jacobs Masterworks Series concerts may be found on the Symphony’s website at www.sandiegosymphony.org.
