Carnegie Hall, Beijing and Beyond! Welcome to the San Diego Symphony’s 2013-2014 Season! The San Diego Symphony is about to make history as the orchestra embarks on a two-week tour this fall beginning at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall, supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, and then on to China with performances in Beijing, Shanghai and Yantai, San Diego’s sister city. The China Friendship Tour is generously supported by Sam B. Ersan. We are also very proud to announce that our fall season at Symphony Hall will open with renovated upper and lower lobbies as well as improved amenities to make your concert-going experience much more enjoyable. Our Jacobs Masterworks series will feature violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman, pianists Lang Lang and Yefim Bronfman and internationally-acclaimed conductor (as well as my mentor when he was directing The Cleveland Orchestra), Christoph von Dohnányi. A few program highlights include Beethoven’s ever-popular Fifth and Ninth Symphonies, Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Rachmaninoff’s monumental Third Piano Concerto. Please join us in welcoming Bill Conti, our new principal pops conductor and Oscar® and five-time Emmy® Award-winning composer, as he kicks off our City Lights series with A Night at the Academy Awards. Other highlights include Ballroom with a Twist, The Music of James Bond and San Diego’s favorite holiday music tradition Holiday Pops. Other subscription series such as our International Passport, Classical Edge, Fox Theatre Film, Chamber Music and Family Festival are included in this brochure. I look forward to seeing you at the San Diego Symphony, and we appreciate your continued support!

Jahja Ling

Music Director

Ling’s carefully considered, masterfully paced performance revealed the orchestra and the music’s best qualities. The strings played with warmth and clarity, the brass sounded with unwavering authority, and the woodwinds provided moments of sheer delight.

The San Diego Symphony recently launched an unprecedented project called Your Song Your Story that was made possible by a generous grant from the James Irvine Foundation. This project aims to encourage San Diego’s diverse communities to participate more actively in the arts by inviting them to co-create an original composition. The final composition will be performed for at least 5000 people starting in the summer of 2014. To share your song, story or dance visit our website at yoursongyourstory.org and upload your video before August 15, 2013.

The San Diego Symphony is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
