Old Globe’s world premiere ‘The Wanderers’ weaves together disparate stories of people looking for something more

T

BY JAMES HEBERT he last time the fast-rising playwright Anna Ziegler was at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, it was with “The Last Match,” the story of an intense rivalry between two top tennis pros. Now she’s back with another world-premiere work — one that’s more of a doubles match. But “The Wanderers” is not about tennis, and the play finds Ziegler working without a net in more ways than one. The new piece, which just began performances at the Balboa Park theater, sets out to tie together a pair of relationship stories that could hardly seem more different. One is the tale of an arranged marriage between two Orthodox Jews from a strict Hasidic community. The other is

an account of a coy and candid online correspondence between a best-selling author and a Hollywood star. And if those sound like two separate plays entirely, it turns out that’s exactly how “The Wanderers” started out. As Ziegler tells it, the Globe and its artistic director, Barry Edelstein, commissioned her to write a new piece right after the February 2016 premiere of “The Last Match,” a play that eventually was to land off-Broadway last fall. One complicating factor: Ziegler was due to have a baby that September and wanted to finish a draft before that blessed event. So she began writing a play about an arranged marriage in a Hasidic community, a topic that had long fascinated her. While she was working on that, The New York Times published an email correspondence between the novelist Jonathan Safran Foer and the movie star Natalie Portman. ZiegSEE ‘WANDERERS’ • E5

artha Gilmer is the CEO of the San Diego Symphony, not a gourmet chef. But when it comes to cooking up an annual, eight-month-long musical feast designed to appeal to an array

of palates, she easily holds her own. ■ “The flavors complement each other — they are contrasting, but flow one to the other,” Gilmer said. “Whatever the palate, the season is well-thought-out and classically prepared.” ■ The proverbial proof in this borders-leaping aural pudding can be found in the upcoming 2018-2019 season.

TALKING WITH ...

It expertly mixes enticing artistic collaborations, proven musical favorites — some with new interpretations — and a host of fresh treats. Accordingly, no fewer than 13 guest artists will be making their San Diego debuts with the orchestra, which will showcase 14 compositions it has not performed before. Topping this ambitious menu are Rafael Payare and Lang Lang. Payare, a 37-year-old Venezuelan native, will conduct four concerts in January as part of the Jacobs Masterworks series. These will mark his debut as the San Diego Symphony’s music director designate. He officially as-

sumes his new position on July 1, 2019. Chinese keyboard superstar Lang Lang, 35, will open the season on Oct. 6 and 7. He’ll perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, with Holland’s esteemed Edo de Waart conducting. love of helping pets at Warwick’s on Tuesday night.

Q: A:

What is one of the best life lessons you learned treating animals? Without a doubt, the best part of my career as a veterinarian is my patients. I am still amazed on a regular basis by the lessons my patients have taught me. What resonates the most is to live in the moment. If I diagnose cancer in a cat or dog, the diagnosis doesn’t change their behavior, they don’t look at the world differently, and they don’t worry about what the future holds.

Q:

What motivated you to become a veterinarian?

A:

It was a love of science that first drew me to veterinary medicine. From the age of 13, I spent every available school vacation volunteering at vet hospitals, animal shelters, dairy and sheep farms, and even a hedgehog hospital.

Q: A:

How have your own pets affected your relationship with your clients? My pets have easily taught me as much as veterinary textbooks and conferences about our relationships with the animals in our lives. Experiencing the illnesses and deaths of my own pets has given me a clearer and deeper understanding of the emotional distress my clients experience when their loved ones are sick.

Q: A:

What is a rewarding part of your career? The hardest? Unfortunately, my career as an internal medicine specialist means that I typically see the sickest dogs and cats with conditions that are difficult to diagnose and treat. But what keeps me going, even on the hardest days, are my patients. There are cats and dogs with chronic disease that I’ve been seeing for years, and getting to know them and their families is a privilege. Having to break the news of a grave prognosis or terminal diagnosis can be very challenging, and witnessing a family’s grief for the loss of a beloved pet is always hard. Performing euthanasia is not the hardest part of the job for a SEE FINCHAM-GRAY • E5

SYMPHONY

SCHEDULE

FROM E3 we want to plan for the future, and it was fantastic,” Gilmer said, speaking by phone from a subsequent family visit to her native Wisconsin. “He has seen this season’s schedule, but it was pretty well set in stone before Rafael was announced as our music director designate.” All funds raised from Payare’s Jan. 10 Discover Night concert will go to the San Diego Symphony’s Learning and Community Engagement programs. “I am very pleased that, for my first concert since my appointment as music director designate, we will be supporting our education and outreach programs — something I believe in very passionately.” Payare said in a statement. “I am looking forward to getting to know each and every member of the orchestra and learning more about San Diego and the region.” In another first, the orchestra is scheduled to perform next spring as part of the inaugural season at the La Jolla Music Society’s new concert hall, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. The San Diego Symphony’s upcoming season will also feature a world premiere on Nov. 2 and 4 that was commissioned by the symphony and has not yet been titled. It teams noted Mexican composer Javier Álvarez with author, performer, cartoonist and social activist Juan Felipe Herrera, a San Diego High School alum who served as U.S. poet laureate from 2015-2017. It will be the first work in the orchestra’s history to feature four musicians playing the vihuela, the five-string instrument that is a mainstay of mariachi music. On Nov. 1 and 2, the orchestra will perform the U.S. premiere of Israeli composer Noam Sheriff ’s Leonard Bernstein-inspired work, “Lenny,” which debuted in February in Regensburg, Germany. It will be followed in May by the West Coast premiere of Long Island-bred composer Alyssa Weinberg’s “Reign of Logic.” In between comes the fourth annual edition of the symphony’s increasingly ambitious January Festival, which this year — billed as “It’s About Time: A Festival of Rhythm, Sound, and Place” — reached new heights under the curatorship of percussion marvel

and UC San Diego music professor Steven Schick. The 2019 January Festival will be led by guest conductor Matthew Aucoin, the artist-in-residence of the Los Angeles Opera. The focus will be on the creativity and artistic development of young composers and performers, which is fitting since Aucoin is just 28. “Part of the creative process is, ‘How do you listen in succession to different pieces of music in a program?’ ” Gilmer said. “I love planning a meal, and I love planning a season, and seeing the connecting threads. It’s very exciting to have Lang Lang and Joshua Bell come back, which speaks for itself. And we’ll have a major focus on the orchestra, which you’ll see in our season brochure — the core of the season is their great artistry.” Female composers and conductors will also be in the spotlight in the coming

season. The aforementioned Alyssa Weinberg’s “Reign of Logic” will be conducted May 18 and 19 by Gemma New, 31, with French violinist Michael Barenboim, 32, making his debut here as the featured soloist. French composer Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps will be performed on Jan. 25 and 27, with Aucoin conducting. Italy’s Speranza Scappucci will be here March 22 and 23 to conduct Puccini’s seldom-heard Messa di Gloria. Those concerts will pair the orchestra with the San Diego Master Chorale. Scappucci, Aucoin and Barenboim are among the 13 artists who will make their area debuts with the orchestra. Their participation — like the entire season — is the result of careful planning and finely tuned adjustments by Gilmer and the orchestra’s staff, in collaboration with the guest conductors and soloists. “We learn together with

our audience,” said Gilmer, who noted that the fourth annual Jazz@The Jacobs series will be announced later this year. “I’m especially happy when people come out of a concert, and say, ‘I didn’t know the second piece the orchestra played — and I loved it!’ That’s really a success for us, because the amount of wonderful music written for orchestras is vast. We just want to make sure everybody can explore these new dimensions and feel enriched and ignited by them.” Also in store this season: three Noel Noel holiday concerts in December; a four-part Family Concert series; a four-part Fox Theatre Film Series; and a three-part Jacobs Masterworks Rush Hour 2.0 series of early-evening concerts, which last about an hour each, with no intermission. The Rush Hour series is targeted in part at downtown residents, who can attend the concerts and still get home by 8 p.m. “As you look at the arc of our season, it’s a combination of the new and familiar,” Gilmer said. “When you go to a favorite restaurant — as with the orchestra — you want them to be inventive and also look forward to your favorite dishes. And you want to know you can have both.” george.varga@sduniontribune.com Twitter: @georgevarga

JEFFREY KAHANE HAPPY DOING DOUBLE DUTY Pianist will perform as soloist and guest conductor with S.D. Symphony E.F. MARTON PRODUCTIONS

19th centuries, it was the norm to be the pianist and conductor, or the composer and the conductor. Only in the 20th century did specialization become the norm. So I’m not being flippant to say I won’t choose. I just can’t image why I ever would.” Kahane last year concluded a record-setting 20-year run as the pianist and music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, helping to significantly expand its annual audience. He also had a memorable tenure as music director of the Colorado Symphony, during which time he commissioned a mandolin concerto by San Diego-born Grammy winner Chris Thile. And during Kahane’s decade leading the Santa Rosa Symphony, season ticket subscriptions tripled and attendance for his pre-concert lectures grew from 50 or 75 people to as many as 700. What’s his secret? “I never talked down or pandered to the audience,” he replied. “I think we tapped into a hunger for knowledge, a curiosity about the art form. And I changed the focus of the programming completely in Santa Rosa. “It was an orchestra that would do one piece of new music a year, as a token. By the end of my tenure, we did major works of new music on most programs. The same was true in L.A., although it wasn’t quite as extreme as that. Over the course of my tenure in L.A., we added two completely new series. So it was a case of shaking up the whole philosophy of programming. “I’ve always said I believe in winning over one listener at a time, which sounds counterintuitive, and treating each listener as a human open to a new experience, rather than as a demographic.” george.varga@sduniontribune.com

effrey Kahane has never performed at Lollapalloza, but he has played Lollapalooza — as in the 1995 John Adams composition of the same name. Kahane also played in the Los Angeles rock bands American Revelation, Brandy Wine and Wilderness as a teenager, before becoming one of the classical music world’s leading pianists and conductors. But when this veteran orchestral star first heard the greatest rock band of all time, he had an emphatically negative response. “My mother told me that when The Beatles appeared on TV on ‘Ed Sullivan’ (in 1964), I left the room!” Kahane, 61, recalled with a laugh. “I was, oddly enough, only interested in classical music as a child, and I was such a little snob! But I ended up being a total Beatles fanatic and knew, and played, all their songs.” A “junior hippie” in the late 1960s, Kahane also cites the groundbreaking music of Joni Mitchell as an enduring inspiration. And he praises hip-hop maverick Kendrick Lamar, whose music he was introduced to by his musician son, Gabriel. But when Kahane performs here with the San Diego Symphony on Friday and Sunday, it will be as both the featured soloist and guest conductor. And while his repertoire will feature Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat Major and pieces by Samuel Barber and Robert Schumannn — not Mitchell’s “Woodstock,” The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” or Lamar’s “Alright” — Kahane has no qualms about his career choice. “I certainly don’t regret the path I chose,” he said. “I have the wonderful joy of listening to my son. He’s a great songwriter, and I was an OK one.” As a concert pianist, Kahane has long earned raves for his meticulous dynamic control and winning combination of sensitivity and fearlessness, especially in his sometimes dizzying cadenzas. Also a gifted conductor, he alternates between both roles, conducting from his piano or harpsichord if he is also the soloist. Speaking from USC’s Thornton School of Music, where he teaches, Kahane chortled when asked whether he would choose playing piano or conducting, if forced to do only one. “I wouldn’t! I would refuse to pick!” he said. “I’ve never thought of the two as completely separate. One of the things I try to point out to people is that, in the 18th and

NEW TITLE, SAME JAHJA

Ling, back with the San Diego Symphony as conductor laureate, has been as busy as ever

“I was so glad God gave me that opportunity to be recognized, inspired and mentored by Lenny.” NELVIN C. CEPEDA U-T

ahja Ling, the San Diego Symphony’s music director from 2004 to 2017, makes his debut as conductor laureate this weekend at Copley Symphony Hall. Despite his new title, Ling has not been resting on his laurels. This season, he has conducted orchestras in such far-flung places as Singapore, Indonesia, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. After this weekend’s concerts, he’ll lead the symphony here again in mid-May. Ling lives in Bonita with his wife, noted pianist Jessie Chang, and their daughters, Priscilla, 14, and Stephanie, 12. Ling’s family has accompanied him on several recent trips, including to the Tampa Bay area, where the Florida Orchestra marked its 50th anniversary. He served as its music director from 1988 to 2003. “In January, Jessie and I were invited to help them celebrate,” Ling said. “I conducted Sibelius and Jessie played Beethoven. It was a big honor and an amazing celebration. “The whole family was there. My older sons (Boston-based Gabriel and Los Angeles-based Daniel) and their families came. It was wonderful.” Last fall, Ling, a native of Jakarta, Indonesia, participated in an international gathering there honoring the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation. It was initiated by the Indonesiabased Stephen Tong Evangelistic Ministries International, which Ling co-founded in 1978. At the eight-day event, he conducted four concerts and Chang played three. Ling also directed Reformation 500 seminars in five major U.S. cities. After his upcoming stints in San Diego, Ling will have a busy summer. In June, another mix of family and business will occur in Chang’s birthplace of Taiwan. In July, Ling will celebrate with the Cleveland Orchestra. “I’ve conducted there continuously for 30 years,” Ling said. “I’ve also done the most concerts at the orchestra’s Kent/Blossom Festival. This summer, at the 50th Anniversary Blossom Festival, I’m conducting a concert without soloists, so I’ll be the featured performer, which is special.” Ling is looking forward to again conducting the San Diego Symphony, which he helped build during his 13-year tenure. “I’m very excited,” he said. “I haven’t seen the symphony’s audience and orchestra for a while. It’s

CEO) Martha Gilmer called me,” Ling said. “He is a very talented young conductor. I know his wife, Alisa Weilerstein. She was 10 years old when she played cello with the Cleveland Orchestra.” In both weekend concerts here, Ling will conduct pieces by the iconic Leonard Bernstein, who mentored Ling for many years. The symphony, like many around the world, is celebrating Bernstein, who would have turned 100 this year. This weekend, Ling will conduct “Times Square Ballet” from Bernstein’s 1944 Broadway musical “On the Town.”

“I was so glad God gave me that opportunity to be recognized, inspired and mentored by Lenny,” he said. “ ‘Times Square’ is special because he was a New Yorker. The piece gives a vivid feeling of New York. This music is very close to me.” This weekend’s concerts, titled “Rach 3,” will feature rising pianist Behzod Abduraimov in his San Diego debut. Born in Uzbekistan in 1990, Abduraimov began playing piano at age 5. He’ll perform Rachmaninoff’s notoriously difficult Piano Concerto No. 3. A review of Abduraimov’s “Rach 3” concert in Los Angeles stated that the young virtuoso was “composed enough to find poetry in the calmer stretches before peeling off the huge chords and octaves of the final minutes with as much bravura and even eloquence as one would want.” Ling’s mid-May performances will launch a monthlong celebration of Bernstein here. He’ll conduct the San Diego debut of Symphony No. 1: Jeremiah, which will feature the highly praised mezzosoprano Kelley O’Connor. Ling will return as conductor laureate to conduct two programs in the spring of 2019. “It’s one way to keep my connection with the orchestra and the community. I love the community here.”

Wood is a freelance writer.

“As a conducting student, I had the opportunity to take a 50-minute master class with the Maestro. I chose Brahms Symphony No. 4. Not long after I started, he asked me: ‘Would you be able to conduct the music by expressing the musicality of the piece? Concentrate on the music, not the piece.’ I tried. And then he showed me things like how to conduct phrases. I did it and he was so happy. He said, ‘What a transformation!’ “About a week later, Lenny conducted Mahler Symphony No. 9. It was the most moving concert I ever attended in my life. After the piece, nobody clapped because they were so moved. After a few minutes, the place erupted. People were going crazy. I was stunned; I just sat there with tears in eyes. “(The other students and I) went backstage. I was speechless. He was smoking and having a whiskey. When he hugged me, he whispered in my ear, ‘I remember that master class, and you will be a big conductor one day.’ I almost collapsed. I didn’t even think he had remembered me. I was very happy and taken by surprise.”

Hollywood Bowl 1982

“I was the assistant conductor of the San Francisco Symphony, partly thanks to Bernstein, who had written a letter of recommendation. And I was invited to work for the summer with Lenny at the Hollywood Bowl. He was the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute’s artistic director at the time. “I worked three to four hours with Lenny daily. He was amazing. I learned his Symphonic Dances From West Side Story, Mahler Symphony No. 5, and many more. “Those times when I learned from the Maestro inspired me to make great music through my life. He taught me to inspire musicians to move people’s hearts.”
