Now in its 10th year, Poland’s Meccore String Quartet teams violinists Jarosław Nadrzycki and Wojciech Koprowski with violist Michał Bryła and cellist Karol Marianowski. The Warsaw-based chamber group has earned a lofty reputation for its virtuosity, musical empathy and pinpoint precision. The quartet has also become a local favorite, thanks to its multiple performances at UC San Diego as part of the school’s annual ArtPower series. For its Friday concert, the ensemble will play Edvard Greig’s String Quartet No. 1, Karol Szymanowski’s String Quartet No. 2 and Robert Schumann’s Quartet in A Minor. GEORGE VARGA • U-T

Patti Austin shines equally as a solo artist or singing with other vocal greats, as she has done so memorably with Michael Jackson on “It’s the Falling in Love,” George Benson on “Moody’s Mood for Love” and James Ingram on “Baby, Come to Me.” Her other credits range from Cat Stevens and Paul Simon to Quincy Jones and Steely Dan. Austin will be in the spotlight Friday when she opens the San Diego Symphony’s 2018-19 “City Lights” concert series. Her orchestra-free performance will feature Austin and her band flexing their musical chops in a program of pop, jazz, soul and more. GEORGE VARGA • U-T
SATURDAY 11.04 Taste of Asia and the Pacific
When the clocks go back, you can, too. The annual Fall Back Festival and Historic Children’s Street Faire takes guests through a day in the life of San Diego during the late 1800s. Learn about history while trying out some of the things people did back then. Kids can hop in the saddle for pony rides, churn butter, dip candles or pan for gold. There’s also a Wild West show, blacksmith demonstrations, cultural booths with information about different ethnic and cultural groups and their contributions to the city, eating contests and lots of food. Complimentary quesadillas, vegan muffins, popcorn or cotton candy, anyone?
In the midst of many historical cottages housing various cultures, this weekend the International Cottages at Balboa Park focus on Asia and the Pacific with an afternoon of entertainment and food. This annual event celebrates its fifth year promoting the culture, cuisine and diversity of the region with entertainment from Chamorros, the Philippines and China, and dishes including lumpia, pancit, dumplings, milk tea and Chinese crepes (or Jianbing).
