From the desert to Balboa Park and Carlsbad’s Flower Fields, spring offers blooming flora of all shapes and colors. Over the next few months, the classical music scene promises that kind of vibrant variety, with concerts large, small, traditional and groundbreaking. Here are highlights, in chronological order. The Kontras Quartet with Branford Marsalis Art of Élan presents a special program headlined by the Chicago-based Kontras Quartet and stellar saxophonist and multiple Grammy winner Marsalis. In addition to chamber music, the concert will explore folk, jazz and blues. 7 p.m. April 8. Music Box, 1337 India St., Little Italy. $25-50. (619) 692-2081. artofelan.org

Raúl Prieto Ramírez New San Diego civic organist Raúl Prieto Ramírez will play his first evening concert on the world’s largest outdoor pipe organ. The Spanish native’s afternoon performance in January included pieces by Bach, Saint-Saëns and Queen, so expect an intriguing mix of musical selections. 7:30 p.m. April 14. Spreckels Organ Pavilion,

Balboa Park. Free. (619) 702-8128. spreckelsorgan.org

“Queen of the Ether” Kallisti, UC San Diego’s adventurous chamber opera group, will highlight women’s voices by performing a diverse collection of works by four female composers. This concert showcases the local premiere of “Puksånger/Lockrop (Herding Calls),” by Sweden’s Karin Rehnqvist, whose music sometimes employs highpitched Scandinavian shepherd calls. 7 p.m. April 21. Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla. Free. (858) 534-3448. musicweb.ucsd.edu/ concerts

The San Diego Early Music Society presents Jean Rondeau Few early-music practi-

Pauline Oliveros, co-founder of the UC San Diego Department of Music. The ensemble, which performs under the auspices of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, encourages its audiences to explore the experience of deep listening. 7:30 p.m. May 23. Athenaeum Art Center, 1955 Julian Ave., Barrio Logan. $20. (858) 454-5872. ljathenaeum.org/ special-concerts

tioners inspire such phrases as “baroque and roll” and “badass virtuoso,” but harpsichordist Rondeau — a Frenchman in his mid-20s — has done just that with his passionate performances. He’ll play pieces by J.S. Bach, Jean Philippe Rameau and Pancrace Royer. 5 p.m. May 6. Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theatre, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, El Cajon. $23-35. (619) 291-8246. sdems.org

Haydn Voyages Series The Hausmann Quartet plays chamber music aboard the Berkeley, a ship docked at San Diego Bay. The dynamic quartet will combine Haydn’s work with pieces by contemporary composers, including Philip Glass, to add new aural dimensions. For the quartet’s free concerts at the

Bernstein at 100 The San Diego Symphony is celebrating Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday with works by the beloved composer in four weekend programs, conducted by the renowned Fabien Gabel, Edo de Waart and Jahja Ling. Bernstein was a mentor to Ling, who will lead concerts in April and May, the latter of which will feature Symphony No. 1: Jeremiah. The previous Tuesday finds gifted pianist Orli Shaham closing the symphony’s Chamber Music Series with a Bernstein tribute. 8 p.m. May 11 and 12; 2 p.m. May 13. The program, “A Line Broken,” includes Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” and Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem.” The concert’s accomplished singers include sopranos Helga Davis, who is based in New York; San Diego Opera’s Priti Gandhi; and baritone Patrick Walders, choral director of the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus . 7:30 p.m. June 9; 2 p.m. June 10.
