SUMMER SYMPHONY SERIES IN SAN DIEGO Talent flows through the San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights concert series as famous singers such as Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle and Broadway star

Megan Hilty perform with the symphony. Other notable performers include singer Roger Daltrey from The Who.

The concert series begins June 29, leading into July 4, and comes to a triumphant end on Sept. 2 with the symphony playing Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, accompanied by real cannons. The concert series will also feature the symphony playing the scores to movies as they’re shown. For instance, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will show Aug. 4–5, and West Side Story will show Aug 10. For more, visit sandiegosymphony.org/tickets-events/bayside2018. —Megan Campbell

BOWLS FULL OF COLOR In 1981, famed glassblower Dale Chihuly had the idea to use the 300 colors in his Tacoma, Washington, hot shop. He began with charts, choosing one color for the interior of a piece, another for the exterior, and then he started combining colors in unexpected ways. The result was the Macchia series, which is on display in the “Macchia Forest Exhibition” at the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, through Dec. 31. The exhibit features 20 floral-shaped bowls that showcase Chihuly’s unique blending and layering of colors. Macchia is Italian for spot, stain or smear. For more, visit wmoda.com. —Megan Campbell

‘BEAUTIFUL CHAOS’ IN PHILLY The Modernism art movement was full of stylistic diversity that curators at the Philadelphia Museum of Art describe as “beautiful chaos.” The museum’s “Modern Times: American Art,” through Sept. 3, showcases the breadth of the artistic movement, from Florine Stettheimer’s Spring Sale at Bendel’s (pictured) to Georgia O’Keeffe’s abstract Red and Orange Streak to work by Marsden Hartley, Jacob Lawrence and Horace Pippin. Modernism is most directly tied to the period from 1910 to 1950, when artists highlighted diversity and addressed life in America through bright colors and defined shapes. Santa Barbara’s heart has never been bigger. After last winter’s devastating Montecito mudslides, locals have come together to reconnect and rebuild. The result? Bustling neighborhoods, openings and reopenings, and friendly faces out and about—meaning there’s never been a better time to visit the American Riviera. “It’s our special place and becoming known to the world,” says Jim Rosenfield, owner of the Montecito Country Mart (montecitocountrymart.com).
