Renowned pianist and La Jolla Music Society SummerFest Music Director Inon Barnatan performs Ravel's sublime Concerto in G. Music Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in Mahler’s monumental and glorious Symphony No. 1. The evening opens with Reinaldo Moya's hauntingly beautiful work inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Rafael Payare conducts a gorgeous program starting with Lili Boulanger's evocations of joy and sorrow, then Mahler's heartfelt songs about first love, Songs of a Wayfarer featuring outstanding mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung. Tchaikovsky's rousing and triumphant Russian Symphony No. 5 concludes the evening.

Beethoven’s powerful Symphony No. 7 is the centerpiece of this concert which includes a short work by rising American composer Carlos Simon inspired by Beethoven’s symphony and by Beethoven’s own writings on the inevitability of fate. Ukrainian-born pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk is featured on Rachmaninoff's passionate Piano Concerto No. 2.
