❃ Pre-register before the show if possible. Registration only takes a few minutes and will save you from having to fill out a registration form at the show. ❃ Slow down and take it all in! Ask questions, get to know the experts and really do your research and feel out who is a good fit for your event by spending time with as many vendors as you can. ❃ Plan on attending the bridal show for several hours so you can visit all the vendors, see the fashion shows and find everything you need. ❃ Don’t come alone. Bringing your fiancé, mom and friends to the bridal show will help them feel involved and will also give you a chance to bounce ideas back and forth. ❃ Bring your date book so you can schedule appointments for follow up. Also bring a notebook and pen so you can take notes. When you find a vendor you would like to follow up with, note what struck you as appealing about them in your notebook or on their card or literature. Also, write down any good tips they may have given you on their literature to help you remember who was knowledgeable and helpful. ❃ Bring a digital camera or your smart phone. Taking pictures [include their business sign in the photo!] allows you to easily remember all the great things you saw at the show. ❃ Visit every vendor regardless of whether you need their services or not. Many vendors can tell you other people they work with and who they recommend. Take the literature or brochure they are handing out. Even if you think you have no use for their services, it’s better to have it in hand in the event you change your mind. ❃ Ask lots of questions. The show is filled with wedding professionals, so take advantage of the opportunity to learn as much as you can.

When Alex Petersen, an ICU nurse at Children’s Hospital, began planning her wedding she had in mind a sweet vintage dream with elements of shabby chic: white distressed garden furniture, mismatched antique chairs and pieces like her grandfather’s suitcase, vintage lace, antique roses and old black and white family photos. And like any good modern day groom, Kyle Lloyd, a Carlsbad Firefighter, had a vision too; a rustic, relaxed, family and friend oriented wedding day with lots of wood and natural elements where the guys could feel welcome too…. the result?

Rustic/Vintage Chic The wedding’s rustic vintage palette included blush pink, champagne, ivory, soft greens and silvery gray plus the white pumpkins which were found scattered throughout the venue, giving a nod to the fall season. Levyland Estates offered a rich, beachside, private setting where the couple and their guests could make themselves at home for days, not just hours. In keeping with the charming, family friendly feeling of the day, lemonade was served in jelly jars, the groom set up the unique and very popular rustic photo booth for guests to capture the fun and the joy, and his own grandmother even made and canned the preserves for favors.

Ooh la la L’amour! A beautiful vintage Parisian styled wedding transports Tijana and Tyler and their wedding guests to the city of lights circa 1890, without ever having to leave Southern California. Tijana and Tyler, the visionaries behind their own wedding, were able to draw most of their design inspiration for this lovely event from the venue itself. The bride was charmed by the fact that the US Grant Hotel is over a100 years old, and has such a rich history in San Diego-purportedly the ballroom was a speakeasy during prohibition! The old world glamour of the hotel, which underwent a multi-million dollar remodel a few years ago to completely restore and update its turn of the century grandeur, was perfect for Tijana and Tyler’s ‘Vintage Parisian Romance’ theme. Tijana’s choice of a classic Coco Chanel color palette with blacks, grays, pale pinks and gold accents finished the look to perfection. The couple also fell in love with the idea of getting married by candlelight, because it made for a more authentic and intimate event, where everyone was warmed by the love in the room and bathed in the gentle glow of candlelight.

Cleanse – I like to use a gentle cleanser for all skin types because this can cut out reaction time. Use your cleanser twice a day – once in the morning before you apply your makeup and once in the evening right before bed to eliminate the debris from the day. You’d be amazed at what your skin picks up each day! Exfoliate - Find that perfect exfoliant; something light but harsh enough to get rid of those dead skin cells. Everyone’s skin is different, so you’ll have to work with your skincare professional to find the right one for your skin type. The most common mistake people make is over exfoliating. Once a week is usually enough to remove dead skin cells and invigorate your pores. Tone- Toning the skin brings the skins natural PH back to normal. Use a toner once a day in

the evening, immediately after cleansing. Mask- A mask should be applied once every 1-2 weeks. Consult your esthetician or makeup artist for a recommendation on the right mask for your skin type. Moisturize- Make sure you moisturize as dry skin is hard to work with. You want your skin looking bright and refreshed. Hydrate - Last but not least, always drink plenty of water. Help your skin maintain its natural elasticity by staying well hydrated throughout the day. If you find yourself straying from the regimen, at the very least always cleanse and moisturize daily as those are the two most important steps to ensuring you maintain a well balanced complexion.

SKIN CARE TIPS Jessica suggests starting very gently and easing your skin into its rejuvenation process. Introducing too many harsh or foreign products too quickly can do more harm than good. In an ideal world the best time to start your skin care “boot camp” would be about 6 months out before getting your photos taken. If you’re not looking for a drastic change you can start as few as two weeks before the shoot, which will still give your skin time to adjust and improve, so you can glow!

Keep up a healthy pre-wedding skin care regimen starting now. You’ll be glad you did!

Now that you’ve got that perfectly glowing skin and the confidence to match, it’s time to get ready for the shoot. Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth photo session: Choose The Right Team – Make sure you have the best make-up artist, the best hair stylist and the best photographer – all of which should know your style. Put the work in early and surround yourself with great people. They are your team, your line of support, and their expertise will be pivotal in bringing everything together perfectly. Have a plan – Preplanning gives you the ability to relax and focus on being yourself on the day of. Spend the time with your photographer and beauty team to organize the shoot, locations, and styles you’ll be using throughout. Watch your tone – A professional makeup artist can help you choose the appropriate colors to match your specific skin tone. Bright tones read well on camera. You might feel like you are wearing a bit more makeup than usual, but you should have a little more than your daily application since you’ll be on camera. Actors wear quite a bit of makeup just to look ‘natural!’ 80

Make sure your artist and stylist is certified or licensed and has some experience working with photographers and camera ready or HD products. Having that extra team of professionals helping you achieve the best version of yourself contributes to that photogenic self you are looking for. Embrace that extra attention and let your personality shine. Look the part - Always remember that the first point of contact when looking at photos is the eyes. Practice smiling with your eyes and this will help create an amazing shot. How do you do that? I like to think of it as flirting with the camera; have that relaxed, happy look without having to say anything. To Brooke and Geordy, family was the single most important aspect of their wedding. Made up of only family members, even the bridal party was a reflection of their commitment and connection to their loved ones; Brooke’s sister was maid of honor and Geordy’s 92 year old grandfather was best man, repaying the favor for when Geordy had stood up for him when he remarried years ago. Their Officiant, Judge Michael Anello had married Brooke’s parents. Brooke’s Mother, a local artist, painted a rendition of Brooke’s gown for display and the day took on even more meaning as Brooke’s ailing Grandmother was able to see her beloved granddaughter marry. Poppy’s toast at the reception stole the show, bringing a laugh and tear to everyone’s eye. All in all, the event was a rich and heartfelt celebration, and a reminder, of the things that truly matter: love and family, all brought together for an amazing and perfect day.

If a small child balks at the last minute, honor their fear! Forcing a child to do something they are uncomfortable with will leave all of you scarred. Offer a less scary alternate: waving ‘bye bye’ or blowing kisses or bubbles as bridal party walks back up the aisle after ceremony ends. 161

Invite children who are special to you in some way; your nieces, nephews, special friends, students, god-children or your own little ones are connected to you emotionally and will respond well to your emotion and excitement. Be advised: kids you know and love will create a far more charming day than those you added in just to have a cuter bridal party and photos.

Everyone has fond memories of the adorable flower girl and ring bearer coming down the aisle with smiles and nervousness and occasionally a few tears. But depending on the child, even the smallest role in a wedding ceremony can be frightening and a little overwhelming and trying to keep kids happy getting to and down the aisle may be more work than you think. Knowing the how to deal with kids in a high pressure wedding environment is crucial to insuring that everyone makes it through unscathed. If you want to have children in your wedding, here are some tips to allow everyone to enjoy the big day and create happy memories for all.

Ways to incorporate children into your Ceremony: • Have Flower girl ring a bell and say “the bride is coming, the bride is coming!" • Have children be pages and carry the bride's train. • Have your Flower Girl pull a wagon decorated with flowers or candles to hand out to guests. • Have Flower Girl carry a parasol to match event. • For babies; decorate a baby stroller to have a junior attendant push down aisle. Helping children enjoy your Reception: • Children and even preteens [usually found sulking in the corner] will be more prone to hitting the dance floor if they hear familiar music. Ask kids in advance for their fave pop songs to be sure your DJ has them. • Play the kid friendly music earlier in the evening before kids run out of steam. • Occupy kids when they’re not dancing with a crafts table with crayons, paper and supplies. • Hire a professional babysitting service to monitor children at reception or in a nearby hotel room. Reception mealtime tips to keep kids happy: Food is a highly charged issue for children. Having easy and familiar foods available for children at your reception will alleviate problems and allow parents to enjoy the event too! • Have a kid’s buffet - keep it low to the ground but grown up with chafing dishes [no sterno!] and condiments etc. • Always remember: Kids love ketchup! • Ask your caterer to create a special kid friendly menu with favorites like hot dogs and hamburgers, French fries and mac 'n cheese. Be sure to ask parents about food allergies in advance. • Mini wedding cakes or personalized cupcakes make a fun kid-friendly finish to the meal. Then consider time of day (sunset), and the ways to impact your guests through their “senses”. For example, maybe you are on a patio overlooking a vineyard for dinner with a rose garden, or barrel room nearby. Set a table for 40 by pushing multiple small square tables together, with linen over the entire table hiding where the tables separate. After dinner is served, invite your guests to walk to the rose garden for sunset, pour a glass of champagne and serve a chocolate dipped strawberry, encourage a little conversation, thereby giving the wait staff time to clear the large table, change out the linen, separate the multiple tables to individual tables for four people at each set up cabaret style for the dancing to begin. Roll in a specialty coffee bar, maybe a cigar bar and change the color of the LED lights. From the start Jamie Menna and Jay Sanders knew exactly what they wanted of their wedding day: an intimate, love-filled, happy and easy day with their son and closest family and friends at their side, in the places that meant the most to them. As parents of 3 year old Max, and with their own families spread out over both coasts, they didn’t exactly have much time to pull it all off. But since they had met in San Diego where Jay had grown up, had enjoyed their first date at San Diego’s famous Tractor Room and were still living in Southern California, it was the obvious choice for bringing everyone together to celebrate. Deborah and Bryant Mendelson knew they wanted to create a special occasion reflective of Deb's mother's childhood home of the West Indies for their warm weather wedding celebration on the shores of La Jolla at the beautiful Scripps Forum. Every element planned brought the warm trade winds and the British Colonial elegance of the tropics to life. Lush greens with orchids were resplendent everywhere. English hem-stitched linens gave the guests tables an elegant feel, while the silver candelabras added a look of refinement against the more casual lush greens and orchids of the Caribbean.

Guests entered into a pre-ceremony cocktail party where rum punches were being served - a signature drink and family recipe of Deb's mom using a handmade simple sugar and specialty Mount Gay rum. The ceremony overlooked the gorgeous Pacific ocean as warm breezes carried the sounds of a harp playing traditional ceremony music as Deb walked down the aisle. After the ceremony more cocktails were enjoyed with an authentic steel drum duo entertaining guests while they were treated to a tantalizing array of authentic West Indies delicacies. The warm ambient lighting filtering through the tall foliage, both indoors and out, provided a magical setting while guests grazed on island style delights until the wee hours. Fabulous details throughout the reception provided guests thoughtful touches making them feel transported to the West Indies! Deb reflected her vision in even the smallest elements, like the custom made Tea Towel favors, which were displayed on her mother's large silver platters. Each towel had been silk screened with the families Rum Punch secret recipe that everyone got to take home with them to remind them of this very special celebration! A fabulous party in a tent, located in a Spanish Villa, quietly tucked away in an exclusive area. The ceremony setting is a small lawn bathed in the late summer sunshine. 150/175 Party starts in the day time and ends in the evening. Kathy says “As a designer, when a bride comes to me with a party in a tent, I know I need to focus most of my efforts in bringing ambience to that big white structure! I wanted to make that big temporary structure warm and inviting, and provide a rockin’ party space for this hip bride & groom! I drew a floor plan that incorporated some amazing furniture that glowed with LED lights that became the ‘head tables.’ The bride told me she wanted not only her wedding party, but about 60 of her friends, all together at these tables. We didn’t want them to ‘get too comfortable’ sitting at those tables, so we brought in long white backless benches for seating. We wanted them on the dance floor! For the rest of this crowd, we wanted them to feel comfortable at a more traditionally seated table.

I designed the space so that most of those tables encircled the dance floor with only 4 tables set farther away from the ‘action.’ These tables were perfect for the folks that truly wanted to chat, more than being party animals. Many times I will use the beautifully decorated cake table as first thing that that is seen as guests enter the room. I did just this and I made sure that each guest saw not only the wedding cake, but the unique groom’s cake! Then, directly ahead of the cake, were the glowing head tables, with the dance floor and DJ. On each of the four corners of the dance floor, were 16’ towers of fabric that were lighted from within. The tent glowed with colorful beams of light, and we splurged on a holographic dance floor that we lighted with pulsating lights to create the look of a disco!”

Kathy says “The two words that I hear brides use to describe their perfect day are ‘romantic’ and ‘elegant’. This bride meant it! She must have said the word ‘blush’ to me at least 100 times, as the descriptive color accent for the wedding, and she used the word ‘lush’ at least that many times as she described the styling she loved in floral design! Her budget was ‘do-able’ to create a breathtaking wedding with gorgeous floral, but we needed to be careful not to go wild with rentals. We were very fortunate! She chose a venue that provided an upscale chair for guest seating. Also included were charger plates that could be tied to her ‘look.’ And, to top it off, a lot of the room lighting was already in place, and for a nominal fee, could be accessed for a fraction of the cost that brides generally have to pay.

I knew exactly the linen to suggest so I headed to one of my favorite linen sources and picked my favorite ‘budget friendly’ linen that is abloom with roses! It gave me an instant ‘home run’ design element at the same price as a non textured linen. Using the venue’s chairs and charger plates, along with these linens, gave us a great head start in the romance department! Decorating the church for the ceremony was very important to the bride’s mom, so we filled the church with flowers, but, I used each and every piece following the ceremony, to enhance the reception, right down to the many attendant’s bouquets, which I clustered in small fabric covered vases, that I placed on the head table. I used bouquets from the altar in huge iron candelabra to create a background for the cake and the large planters that bordered the front of the communion railing at the church, outlined the stage in the ballroom and the head table.

I created a second style centerpiece for the tables that focused on more romantic branches set in tall vases, to help fill all the vast openness of the ballroom, that sparkled with hanging candles and crystals, and saved our budget. The bride dreamed of a bouquet loaded with peonies and roses, and so being the fairy godmother, I created that dream. I added seating areas inside the ballroom, near the dance floor, set with coffee tables, so guests could be part of the action around the dance floor, and yet enjoy a cup of coffee or a cocktail while still enjoying the energy of the party! With the budget nearly spent, we opted to pop a bit of lighting on the stage, and place a romantic monogram ‘gobo’ light on the drape across the front of the stage!”

Kathy says “The bride was marrying a man with two young daughters. She wanted to make it a memorable day for not only she and her groom, but also to include her new daughters in the process as well. She told me she loved gerber daisies (gerbera) and hydrangea. I love the combo too, and knew it could be a colorful and pretty look for this family centered marriage. The bride and I decided on simple bouquets of gerbera for the bridesmaids to help save a few dollars for other needed items! Their faith required a structure during the ceremony, called a ‘chuppah’ (that acts as a canopy and is an important part of Judaic tradition) and that took a large part of the budget for décor.

The bride envisioned a fabric covered frame for her chupah and in order to do that, a solid frame had to be built first.

The bride knew she wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to have tall elaborate centerpieces, and given the style of the wedding, a low simple piece was more appropriate. We added tall footed candle holders, with a floating candle in each, to add a little more sparkle to the table tops. Clusters of votive candles also added light close to the table tops. Fortunately, again, the bride selected a venue that provided an upgraded charger plate and Chiavarre chairs. And again, it helped supplement the look of the event!â&#x20AC;?

women have a fresh approach when it comes to thinking about a wedding veil which is now considered a bridal accessory, rather than a tool worn for modesty. With this in mind, many brides are opting to wear a veil without the blusher which shades the face and shoulders. A veil is not something we wear everyday, and selecting one that suits our own style can be a daunting task. Below are some tried and tested “veil facts” to help you in this task. The rule for tulle is to keep it soft and light…. Tulle comes in varying qualities and trust me when I say this, the cheap tulle looks cheap. Ask your stylist how old the store sample is you are trying on. A little known fact is that tulle softens with age, and a frequently handled veil will be very different from the tulle stiffness (and color) of the actual veil you receive. This tends to happen with lower end mass produced cheaper veils, so be sure you know what you are getting. Ask the sales associate to show you the quality of a veil that has just arrived for another bride so you can see what the tulle quality is before you commit. A bargain is only a bargain if you know what you are getting and it’s what you really want! 6 key things to consider… Veil length, cut (shape), gather/thickness (on the comb), layers, trim (edge) , beading and comb type. A good design house will have the capacity to cut any veil in a variety of different thicknesses and lengths. This allows any veil to be appealing to all brides, given that some brides love the “full on poufy” look or multiple layers and some the more simple “fine gather” look with a simple trim. Ask if a veil you like comes in a different gather. This single change in a veil design can make or break a veil sale so most high end stores choose designers that offer their veil collections with different thicknesses and as many design choices as possible. Also try to avoid the plastic oversized combs that lesser quality veil manufacturers use; opt for a metal comb that will be comfortable and easy on your hair. Gown meet Veil - Veil meet Gown… Your gown is the best tool to use when selecting a veil and accessories. This single item so intimately highlights the outline of your personality. A simple gown with clean lines is a clean canvas to paint on it what you will …..add a lace veil for a romantic vintage touch, a heavily beaded or embroidered veil for classic elegance or keep it simple with a raw cut (no trim) for effortless sophistication. Make your veil work for you: Other fun tips to consider is that most cathedral veils can we double up as a wrap for an evening reception by placing the veil over the shoulders, for a multi purpose look. Long veils can also be bustled into the skirt of the gown so that you get to wear them for longer and highlight any embroidery or detail…… be sure to make the veil work for you!

Length, Cut and Details The veil’s length, cut, styling and details are easier to select if you consider the style of your bridal gown. Consideration should be given to the back of the gown to ensure that any particular pattern or cut, bow or waist band, bustle, belt or beading on the back of your gown isn’t compromised by adding a veil with competing trim or mainly in the wrong length. Elaborate and flamboyant gowns can be enhanced by dramatic or simple veils, depending on the wearer’s personality. Gown Shape and Width When choosing a veil your bridal gown’s shape and width should be considered. For instance a gown with a lot of movement works well with a wavy or “waterfall” cut veil; a full-skirted ballroom gown works well with a wide cut or “teardrop” shape veil to encompass the width of the skirt. A gown with very straight or clean lines works well with any veil, as you can either mirror the line of the dress or create more volume with shape. You can create a more dramatic silhouette with any veil by adding layers, thereby adding volume and character. Consider a circular cut veil where the comb is in the center of a circle or oval so that the trimmed edge sits around the base of the veil (i.e. away from the face) allowing you to wear a more elaborately trimmed veil. Where do I fit in!? Women with dramatic features can pull off a more dramatic detailed look, lighter complexions suit softer fabrics, embroidery and lighter laces. Face Shape and hair style is important…. correct placement of a veil is crucial to your overall look so consider how you are wearing your hair when selecting a veil. If the veil feels overwhelming close to your face, try placing it further back towards your crown. Ask yourself when wearing your potential veil… does this veil compete with or add something to my gown and look? How does the veil suit my personality? Do you feel like you are wearing the veil or is it wearing you? One of the most important pieces of styling advice I give to brides is:“A badly chosen accessory, however beautiful in its own right, will take the attention away from its wearers, and thus fail to do its job by becoming “the focus” rather than an complementing “accessory” which is it’s purpose. Most importantly; you should still feel like you!” Let the stylist or designer help you. We’ve all seen the reality shows and know that opinions of your family and friends matter, but most good quality bridal stores truly know how to style brides, and so take advantage of this skill and where possible attend a “designer present veil trunk show” – designers are qualified to select the perfect veil for brides based on all your needs and considerations:- “it’s what we do best aside from design” so use this tool where possible and be honest about your likes and dislikes, it will help achieve your goal to find the perfect veil.

wed on ‘la playa’ [translation: the beach]. Nate had proposed to Brooks on a beach and the shared vision of a sun and surf-filled day, [many days if they had their way!] filled their dreams.

Nate and Brooks always knew they wanted to After a thorough tour of local options with expert event planner Lisa Lippe of Details Defined, they selected the Hilton Los Cabos for the setting. Of all the possibilities they explored, this venue gave them their most important wish; all their guests staying together to revel in more than just one evening’s celebration. More than anything Nate and Brooks wanted all their loved ones to enjoy the wedding and relax in the sun with all the celebrating, laughter, poolside socializing, great weather and yes, margaritas that a great Mexican vacation would offer.

And so the fiestas in Los Cabos, Mexico, at the very end of the Baja peninsula, began…. From the start guests knew they were in for a good time. Upon arrival each received personalized welcome bags by The Invitation Factory, and at night a note was delivered at turn down service complete with a souvenir gift.

The rehearsal dinner brought together the families and then added in all the guests for a quesadilla bar, margaritas, beer, and a lively Mariachi band. Every detail was designed to enhance the connection and fun of having all their loved ones in Mexico, right down to the father / daughter dance. The father of the bride, a composer and singer, wrote a special song for his daughter, recorded it with an orchestra without her knowledge and even learned to waltz, all to surprise Brooks.

Post reception guests continued the party with a bon fire, s’mores, guitarist, and open bar, all on the beach. When it was over these sun kissed and happy guests bid a fond, yet surely reticent, adiós to lovely Los Cabos, Mexico.

What is your specialty? Destination Weddings and the details that go into them. Also creating celebrations that impact the senses, yes brining Feng Shui elements into the set up and timing.

What do you like most about doing weddings? Meeting people, finding out what makes them tick. I love the wedding day. It’s like opening night of a production.

If you are married what was your wedding like? My wedding was in the 80s. 6 bridesmaids in peach, yikes! Charger’s Chef setting up a buffet, yes buffet not stations, and simplicity at its finest. – ha ha.

What is your most memorable [professional] wedding moment? A Cabo Wedding where the Father of the Bride wrote a song for his daughter, had it recorded with an orchestra while he played piano and sang, played it for Father Daughter dance after learning the waltz so he could lead her in the dance. All a surprise! Amazing!

What is the place in the world [where you haven’t been] that you would want to visit the most? Spain & Italy.

How do you come up with inspiration for your work?

If you could have 6 people to dinner from any time or place in the world who would they be and where would you dine [and on what]? My Grandmother & Grandfather who traveled the world as entertainers with Gypsy Rose, My distant Uncle Henry Longfellow the poet, Oprah, President Abraham Lincoln, and Julia Roberts. We would be under a canopy made of cheese cloth and canvas on a beach in Greece, sitting on benches on a beautifully adorned table with candles and orchids.

What’s your best advice to couples from your field? Don’t rush through a “To Do” list, enjoy each step of the planning process and schedule what I call stolen moments into your wedding day. The most important moments of your wedding day can be a few stolen moments; that 1015 minutes to yourselves as your guests find their seats. I find that another powerful time for the couple is right after the ceremony, take 2-3 minutes to take in the all that is happening between you before celebrating with anyone else.

What should brides/grooms/people know about you? I will always be calm cool and collected. I will make you feel like you are my only client and will tell you what you need to know during the planning stages. I do not pacify my clients. My clients hire me to consult with them on important decisions. The insight and honest feedback I give to my clients helps them to make informed decisions.

What makes your business wonderful and stand out from the rest? A sense of calm, fresh creative ideas, clear communication, and sincere respect for my clients and colleagues.

Morning walks on the beach are quiet times I can think about the people I am working with and the conversation we have had. It is truly my clients who inspire me and my ideas.
