Welcome to Coastal Virginia!
Mary Goldburg Regional Representative
Whether you are staying on the Southside (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake), the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg), Smithfield, Suffolk or Chincoteague Island on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, you are in the birthplace of the U.S. of A.
Coastal Virginia is a history buff’s paradise. Native American communities resided here for generations before the “First Landing” of European settlers just 400 years ago. Throughout time, the people of the region have played a significant role in the advancement of trade, technology, exploration, civil and human rights, medicine, business, education and culture. And, the future of this region is even more exciting than the past. Located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic, one of the most notable characteristics of the area is the abundance of water. In fact, the region takes its name from local waterways. From the U.S. Navy, the shipbuilding and repair industries, to international marine transportation, leisure cruising and the Port of Virginia, the area thrives on the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay and many natural harbors and rivers.
Our purpose in developing this publication is to give the reader a sense of the area they are visiting. The stories on the best places to eat, to shop, to visit as well as living here and local history are contributed by people that live and work in the region. We hope their stories enhance your stay. We truly hope you enjoy your stay in Coastal Virginia. Please mention this book when you visit our sponsors, without whom this book would not be possible. Sincerely,
Luke V. Howard, Jr. Sandmarks President/CEO

Whether you attend school, live, work, or are spending the day or the weekend you are sure to find it both charming and enchanting.
Newport News: Newport News invites you to discover the future. On the north side of Hampton Roads Harbor where the Chesapeake Bay meets the James River, the City of Newport News is recognized for its advanced research and technology resources. Great Dismal Swamp “Well, it doesn’t really live up to its name, does it?” A common sentiment from visitors, The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is hardly dismal. The refuge encompasses over 112,000 acres of forested wetland in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Early European settlers referred to swamps as “dismals,” and considered them fearful places filled with wild beasties and poisonous fogs. Colonel William Byrd II is generally credited for giving the swamp its name when he led a land survey crew through in early 1728.

iFLY I Fly, You Fly, We All Fly at iFLY! You will never again have to wonder what it feels like to fly because you are about to experience it firsthand.”—And so begins every flight at iFLY Virginia Beach. iFly Virginia Beach opened in January of 2015 and is quickly proving to be a velocity-fueled memory-maker for all ages and abilities. Got a teenager who’s tough to impress? Grandparents who think they’re too old? An 8-year-old who’s up for anything? And parents who aim to please? Flying is bound to be a “high”light for everyone. iFLY Va Beach offers the most realistic skydiving simulation possible—no jumping, free falling or experience necessary. From the moment flyers enter the state-of-the-art facility at 24th and Pacific, it’s clear this will also be a high-tech adventure. A quick glance at the flat-screens behind the front desk provides a real-time, jaw-dropping glimpse at flyers in action, and it all begins with the selection of a flight package and any desired add-on options. All first-time flyer packages include two flights in the tunnel, professional flight gear, one-on-one assistance from an IBA-accredited instructor and personalized flight certificate. Each flight lasts 60 seconds. In comparison, the average free-fall portion of a plane-assisted skydive lasts approximately 30 to 45 seconds. Flyers are asked to enter their information and sign the required waiver and then it’s off to the flight deck to meet the heart of the operation—a 14-foot wide, 52-foot tall, climate-controlled, recirculating-air flight chamber powered by four fans generating 1,400 horse power and capable of creating variable wind speeds in excess of 180 m.p.h. 18
Destination Coastal Virginia
Each group of flyers attends a training session, during which a short video is shown, hand signals are learned, flight positions are practiced and questions are answered. Is it like a roller coaster? No. Is it nauseating? No. Will I fall? No, the sensation is more like floating than falling. Will I have fun? Absolutely, it’s pure awesomeness. From there, flyers suit-up. The iFLY Va Beach gear fits easily over clothes and is specially designed to allow instructors to guide and hold onto flyers in the tunnel. A quick photo-op in front of the iFLY Va Beach stepand-repeat, and it’s time to enter the flight chamber. Taking turns, each flyer will step from the holding area into the wind tunnel, lean into the vertical column of air and let it lift them right off their feet. The entire process lasts approximately one hour and 15 minutes, and at iFLY Va Beach, flyers age 3 to 94 have conquered it. They’ve hosted retirement communities and wounded warriors, as well as bodyflight athletes, and accomplished civilian and military skydivers. They’ve created a venue perfect for free-falling enthusiasts and the faint-of-heart. They’ve brought a monumental experience to visitors and locals alike and are quickly proving that no beach day is complete without the “wind” beneath your “wings,” an instructor by your side and the pure joy of flight written all over your face. 2412 Pacific Ave. Virginia Beach, VA (757) 754-4359 iFLYvabeach.com

Dinner, Drinks, and the Tarnished Truth Tarnished Truth Distilling Co. was created more than eight years ago by Virginia Beach natives Andrew Yancey and Josh Canada. The pair set out to craft a Virginia Beach distillery with fellow Virginia native Bruce Thompson, CEO and founder of Gold Key | PHR, the company behind the renovation and revitalization of the Historic Cavalier Hotel & Beach Club. Tarnished Truth today holds the distinction of being the first and only distillery in a hotel in the United States.

Surfing in Coastal Virginia Surfing in Virginia Beach has a long and rich history which dates back to 1912 when Walter F. Irwin returned to Virginia Beach from Hawaii carrying a 9-foot, 110-pound Hawaiian “Olo”. This solid redwood surfboard was believed to be the first of its kind on the East Coast and was a gift for Irwin’s nephew, James M. Jordan Jr. This small event ushered in the early days of the surfing culture for Virginia Beach. It wasn’t long before local watermen and lifeguards Dusty Hinnant, Hugh Kitchin, Babe Breathwaite, Buddy Guy, John Smith, along with Bob Holland and Pete Smith elevated what began as an activity into a legitimate sport. Surfing’s popularity exploded in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s as improvements in surfboard technology allowed for lighter, more responsive surfboards to be built. Notably, the development of foam shapes finished with fiberglass and resin. As surfing’s popularity grew, the first major East Coast surfing contest was held in Gilgo Beach, Long Island in 1962. This contest was attended by a large contingent of Virginia Beach surfers including Butch Maloney, Ronnie Mellott, Gary Rice, and Bob Holland. In the summer of 1963, with the help of the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce, local surfers Pete Smith, Bob Holland, and Butch Maloney were able to move the event to Virginia Beach where the water was warmer. The event quickly grew and was renamed Virginia Beach Surfing Festival. Two years later after recognition from all over the world, the event was renamed again as the East Coast Surfing Championships. Virginia Beach quickly became a surfing mecca as surfers traveled from all over the globe to compete in the 22

annual event. Over the last five decades, thanks to the Virginia Beach Jaycees, the growth of the East Coast Surfing Championships has paralleled the growth of the city of Virginia Beach and the sport of surfing. What was once a grassroots surfing carnival in 1963 has now become one of the largest and second oldest surfing contest in the world. It is second only to the Bells Beach contest in Australia. Now globally known as the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships presented by Vans. This event is now part of the World Surf League international professional tour. Coastal Edge E.C.S.C now hosts hundreds of amateur and professional surfers from all corners of the planet. During the last week of August each year, Virginia Beach becomes a global village of surfers, surfboard builders, surf industry retailers, and all those who enjoy the ocean and the beach lifestyle. Having grown and diversified, Coastal Edge E.C.S.C. now includes skimboarding, volleyball, freestyle motocross, stand up paddle, professional longboard, bikini contest, concerts, as well as an opportunity for fans to see the world’s best professional surfers right here at 1st Street. This premier event truly has something for everyone. Virginia Beach has five designated surfing areas that are protected by lifeguards throughout the summer. They are 3rd Street through 5th Street, 1st Street through 2nd Street, the north and south ends of Croatan Beach, and Little Island Pier in Sandbridge. All types of surf craft are allowed and a mandatory leash law applies at all beaches. Have fun this summer and enjoy the sand, sun, and surf!

Wes Laine Surf Camp Surfing is Not a Spectator Sport in Virginia Beach Over the years, the sport of surfing has grown tremendously as surfboards have become much lighter, more maneuverable, and readily available for purchase or rental your local surf shop. Today, the most common question is “How do I learn to surf?”. Years ago, surf lessons and surf camps did not exist as we know them today which made learning how to surf very difficult. Now you can learn to surf or improve your surfing skills at the Wes Laine Surf Camp Presented by Quiksilver. We have been creating new surfers since 2006. As a former top 10 World Professional Tour competitor, Wes will share his experience and knowledge of surfing with each participant. Spa manicures and pedicures are an experience in indulgence with special pampering for hands and feet. A trip to the spa may be just what you are looking for on your next visit to the beach. Restaurant Etiquette for Dog Owners By: The Richmond Times-Dispatch
It is important to never give anyone the opportunity to think of your dog as a nuisance. Here are some tips for owners looking to bring dogs as dining companions: • Know your dog’s personality and how they behave in public. • Feed your dog before your meal (no one likes a beggar). • Your dog should be tired. • Don’t let your dog eat off your plate or drink from your water glass. • Bring your own water and dish just in case (don’t assume restaurants will provide). • Keep your dog on a short leash. • Let your dog relieve itself before your meal. Prost! . . .‘cheers!’ Wasserhund Brewing Company, meaning ‘water dog’ in German, was born from a love of the beach, dogs, and German beer. We opened our doors in August of 2015, and since then we’ve produced quality brick-oven pizzas, lagers, and ales in Virginia Beach. We’ve been invested in our community by partnering with local nonprofit organizations and, to-date, have made 140,000 in cash donations. Our mission is simple: good beer, delicious food, and great times. Our interest in beer began many years before Wasserhund. We produced home brew for our friends and threw beer festivals in our home. Between Aaron’s work as an officer in the Navy and Christine’s manufacturing engineering job, we perfected some of our German recipes: German Shepheweizen and Oktoberfest being two of our popular ones today. During our explorations with home brew, we traveled to Germany and the idea of Wasserhund was born in the beer halls of Oktoberfest in Munich. Over a liter of beer, we decided that we wanted to open a brewery in our home town that incorporated our shared knowledge of chemical engineering (Go Hokies!), our love of home brew, and our passion for helping the community. When we went to Germany for Oktoberfest, we were inspired by their beer halls. Oktoberfest beer halls are filled with people in all walks of life. Strangers become friends over the course of a conversation, proximity, some food, and drinks. We created Wasserhund to be an open-seating model, with the idea that friendship could be cultivated at our tables. We paired that model with the best servers at the Beach. Friendly and hard-working, they serve up not only cold beer and delicious pizza, but a great experience for everyone. Our artisan pizza is crafted with creativity and beer in mind. We use ingredients from our beer in our pizza dough, sausages, beer cheese, beer mustard, and many more items on the menu. We infuse our passion for brewing beer into each bite you enjoy. Our pizza sauce is made from scratch, cheese freshly shredded, and dough hand rolled, pressed, and tossed. Every month we mix up our menu with a new pizza of the month to bring even more creativity to our options. Our opportunities to grow food have made Wasserhund a destination for delicious pizza as well as beer. The match is unmistakably mouth-watering. Our Wasserhund space has grown over the almost four years we’ve been open. We have an expanded taproom area with long tables for larger groups or even just a place to meet new people. Our patio is larger as well, accommodating our four-legged fur friends even easier was one of our goals in our most recent expansion. Two firepits, a garage door, and plenty of activities for the kids, make our taproom space an amazing place for everyone. Call it whatever you want . . . we call it German style brewing with a Beach kick. Really, it’s great beer, great pizza, great times. Prost!

See fish with no eyes and frogs that change colors. Touch live spider crabs and a real dinosaur bone. It’s all at the Virginia Living Museum, Newport News, where living exhibits depict Virginia’s natural heritage from the mountains to the sea. Opened in 1987 as the first living museum east of the Mississippi, the Virginia Living Museum is still a museum leader in its use of living exhibits (animals, plants, marine creatures, reptiles, amphibians, birds) to present its message – connecting people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation. Each exhibit tells a story. There is a predator-prey relationship between the chipmunk and the corn snake; the camouflage abilities of the flounder and the invasive, but beautiful lionfish. Transport yourself to the steamy world of a cypress swamp, complete with an alligator. Find songbirds nestled in the trees around a cascading mountain waterfall and view trout in a cool mountain stream. Colonel William Byrd II is generally credited for giving the swamp its name when he led a land survey crew through in early 1728 to establish the boundary between Virginia and North Carolina. While the plentiful trails today provide easy walking and biking through the Refuge, it isn’t too hard to imagine how hacking through dense vegetation and wet muck for months might leave a suboptimal impression on the surveyors. Despite its imposing name, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is full of beautiful scenery, ample hiking, cycling, birding, and wildlife observation opportunities, allows for fishing, boating, and hunting, and played an important role in the Underground Railroad. Hike or bike (mountain bikes or hybrids are recommended) some of the 60+ miles of trails along narrow canals formerly used for transporting lumber or walk one of the boardwalk trails that meander through cypress and gum trees. Drive the auto tour and view the unique landscape of the 3,000-acre Lake Drummond, one of only 82

Bring a pair of binoculars to test your birding knowledge and be on the lookout for larger wildlife—the Great Dismal Swamp is home to many animals including snakes, otters, a multitude of white tail deer, and one of the largest black bear populations on the east coast. Learn about its role in history as George Washington’s Dismal Swamp Land Company and as home to maroon colonies of escaped slaves. The Refuge provides the unique opportunity of operating the largest public hunt the Tidewater region. About 75,000 acres are open in Virginia and North Carolina to deer hunters for six weekends in October through November, and 20,000 acres are open to bear hunters in mid to late November. In addition to their state licenses, all hunters must apply for a refuge hunt permit via the Virginia Game Department. While all hunters applying for a deer permit will receive one, the bear hunt is a lottery and only 50 applicants will receive permits.
