TOP DESIGN One of the great pleasures of design is seeing diverse ideas and creativity emerge. Though the interiors and architecture that surround us today are largely grounded in historical reference, whether through the lens of 18th-century French style or the 1980s Postmodern Memphis movement, it is the designer’s reinterpretation that keeps it fresh.

It’s also the first time that we have dedicated our entire feature to one home: The iconic Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Twenty-three design firms—representing both established designers and up-and-coming talent—with a stunning range of styles and ideas were invited by me to reimagine the rooms of this historic estate. I hope this celebratory issue takes you on a design journey that you’ll delight in.

To celebrate this “Best of Design” issue, we’ve created five covers from our Greystone Mansion feature, one of which is yours. Here is the full set. Clockwise from top left: Designer Nina Campbell’s Mr. Doheny’s Suite; designer Cliff Fong’s Breakfast Room; designer Oliver M. Furth’s Reception Hall; designer Mark D. Sikes’ Grand Garden Hallways; designer Sara Story’s Homage to the Square.

This special “Best of Design” issue marks our fifth-annual Gold List, highlighting an amazing cast of talent—architects, interior designers, builders and other design pros—who all seem to share a connection. They make the everyday in our lives much more personal, beautiful and interesting.

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

SONYA REVELL

Photographer / Miami

JORGE S. ARANGO

MATTHEW MILLMAN

Which writers have inspired you? I am a big fan of the novels of Ethan Canin. Plus, Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children and Toni Morrison’s Beloved are, for me, two of contemporary literature’s greatest masterpieces. I also love the African memoirs of Alexandra Fuller; the way she exquisitely evokes the violence of that landscape is so intensely palpable. What is your favorite thing about design? Its endless creativity and reinvention—I never get tired of it. It’s all about beauty, color, proportion and form. That’s why I do styling work, as well; it taps my right-brain functions, while the writing is more left-brain. Most memorable interview for Luxe? I recently interviewed Jack Lenor Larsen, someone I’ve admired for 30 years and had never met. He is a legend in the worlds of textiles, art and gardening. Would we have been as enamored as we are of ikat today without him? I very much doubt it.

Most memorable Luxe shoot? One of my favorites was for a home in Napa Valley by architect Andrew Mann, designer Kara Mann and landscape architect Scott Lewis (above). The fall weather—with the colors of the leaves and grasses—added a depth and feel to the images that you always look for as a photographer. Top three things on your design wish list: I’d have to say that Heath Ceramics tiles for my kitchen and bathrooms, an Ohio Design dining table and a big Peace Industry rug are all high on my list. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I think it’s great to see houses that are smarter these days. Whether it’s through energy efficiency, technology or a more concise use of space and materials, it seems like homes today are maturing.

KELLY VENCILL SANCHEZ Writer / Los Angeles

If I could splurge on anything… It would be a trip to Istanbul. I have a photograph of the Bosporus strait at dusk with the city skyline in the background, and I often look at it and think, “one day.” Then again, I would also be very happy with a vintage Poul Kjærholm PK24 chaise lounge. Favorite Luxe interview? Designer Suzanne Tucker, who told me delightful stories about her early years working for Michael Taylor—a larger-than-life figure in the industry if ever there was one. What do you find inspiring about design today? My youngest son is in a wheelchair, so I’m really interested in how the built environment can be both captivating and uplifting to people of all ages and abilities.

REVELL HEADSHOT: SONYA REVELL. OUTDOOR PHOTO: MATTHEW MILLMAN; ARCHITECTURE BY ANDREW MANN ARCHITECTURE; LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE BY SCOTT LEWIS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE. MILLMAN HEADSHOT: MEGAN WERNER. SANCHEZ HEADSHOT: TEO SANCHEZ. ARANGO HEADSHOT: LAUREN SIMPSON.

Whose work are you most influenced by? Fashion and portrait photographers like David LaChapelle, Philippe Halsman, Rodney Smith and Tim Walker. I am also a huge fan of Tarsem Singh’s film The Fall and pretty much anything by director Tim Burton. And I love the Surrealism of Dalí and the Pop Surrealism of artists such as Mark Ryden. What type of architecture do you find impactful? I really admire the work of Antoni Gaudí. Visiting Barcelona and seeing his creations in person was pretty extraordinary. I also enjoy incorporating midcentury architecture into my photographs; I love that the stark designs and graphic lines feel quite surreal. If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? New Mexico in the fall. The landscape and architecture are just so different from anywhere else. I’ve also been craving autumn leaves, and the Aspen trees there are gorgeous.

itting front row on either side of a couture runway are fashion’s new elite: The Illustrators. Though the notion of a fashion illustrator is not new—appearing in Vogue’s turn-of-the-century pages and on through to the late 1950s until the age of photography began its reign—it’s a fresh crop of talented artists that are proving there is far more to this art form than meets the eye. Live-sketching an avant-garde collection or capturing the minute details of an interior space are just the semantics; these artists are telling a visual story in a language all their own in order to render a moment in time. For some, it’s a quick hand revealing motion and abstract figures, while others articulate in a much more deliberate approach. Art and fashion illustrator Kelly Beeman, whose work is shown at right, speaks to the social relevance of this movement, finding that “everything can be related to through painting.” This theory is manifested by today’s standards, where it isn’t simply the spaces or collections and their muses turning heads, but also the much-anticipated artwork leaked in the aftermath through Instagram, prompting a slew of instant likes. In the wake of this sketch fixation, new artistic expressions have surfaced, reaching more people than ever before, and giving an even more personal and artistic slant to the way we think about fashion and interiors. “An illustration generally has an accessibility to it that perhaps contemporary fine art might lack,” Beeman explains. “People are embracing it now because it captures the relatable aspects of our lives, allowing us to see the world (of fashion, décor, food, etc.) through the filter of the artist.” Anything but antiquated, the illustration hype has rejuvenated the art world and provided access behind the velvet ropes. Here, we celebrate this renaissance through the works and styles of six distinct artists who have left a powerful impact on the art of illustration.

HAYLEY SARNO

“There is a renewed appreciation for illustration,” states fashion accessories designer-turned-interiors illustrator Hayley Sarno. Straddling both worlds, Sarno has developed a fresh approach that marries the two seamlessly. Possessing an unyielding passion for art, Sarno explains the je ne sais quoi surrounding the trend: “Something that is hand-drawn or painted has a romance to it that isn’t possible to replicate with photography or computers.” hayleysarno.com Paper or canvas: Paper. Artistic royalty, yes, but also the sources of inspiration for fashion illustrator Kelly Beeman, a self-taught artist. “The figure and the garment begin as disparate elements,” she says of her process. “The figure always exists first, and the goal is to create continuity between the two.” Industry giants the likes of J.W. Anderson and Tory Burch have enlisted Beeman for just this purpose. “My favorite part of illustrating,” she says, “is when the figure comes alive in a garment.” kellybeeman.com Paper or canvas: Both. JEREMIAH GOODMAN

“There’s an organic, visceral quality about hand-drawn renderings that cannot be captured through CAD software or even photography,” says interiors illustrator Jeremiah Goodman. In 1940, the artist attended what is now Parsons, where he fell into interior sketches by happenstance. For Goodman, illustration found him, but where he took it exceeded all expectations. Last year, for example, fashion designer Marc Jacobs used Goodman’s iconic painting of acclaimed editor Diana Vreeland’s New York apartment as the backdrop to his fashion show. deanrhysmorgan.com Paper or canvas: Paper. BIL DONOVAN

Prolific illustrator Bil Donovan, whose less-is-more aesthetic resonates with iconic fashion houses, powerful beauty brands and top-tier publications, believes that “fashion illustration has a spirit and charm that holds the viewer spellbound.” As an artist in residence for Christian Dior, Donovan stuns with whimsical abstracts that are fluid with movement. “Like ballet,” he explains, “illustrations are seemingly simple, yet there is a strong foundation of traditional art behind the result.” bildonovan.com Paper or canvas: Paper for my fashion, canvas for my personal work. BLAIR BREITENSTEIN

Known for her on-the-fly sketches, and whose brilliance is often “made without intention,” illustrator Blair Breitenstein has left a windswept impression on the world of fashion. “My work tends to be more loose and speedy by preference,” she states, explaining that it’s often “the pieces that take less time and are smudged with pencil and watermarks” that get the most attention. Breitenstein’s signature “girls” led to a recent collaboration with Prada on their 2015 eyewear collection, further asserting the artist’s stronghold on the fashion world. blair-breitenstein.squarespace.com Paper or canvas: Paper. BREAKING GROUND KNOWN FOR HER UNEXPECTED INTERIORS, DESIGNER RAJI RADHAKRISHNAN’S DEBUT RUG COLLECTION IS ROOTED IN HER PASSION FOR QUALITY CRAFT WITH A MODERN ART AESTHETIC. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LACY MORRIS

Tell us how the collection came to be. I’ve been designing custom rugs from my very first project, and I found that there were loopholes in the process—from the initial sketch to receiving the final product—in terms of realizing the true vision. Five years ago, I started to look for manufacturers who understood my minimal yet artistic aesthetic and who I could work with directly to eliminate some of those lost-in-translation-type issues. Where do you find your inspiration? I have a deep and emotional connection to the arts—as a child I was a classical dancer. That experience has never left me, though I’ve focused more on fine art in the past two decades. Everything I create has an artistic lean and this collection is an extension of one of my favorite periods: modern art. Can you touch on how they are created? The rugs are constructed entirely by hand in India; each made to order in any custom size. Most of the crafters are generational weavers whose families have been doing it for decades. Do you feel clients are shifting toward a deeper appreciation for craft? Interiors are getting more and more global in flavor. People are wanting only what they absolutely love or seeking memories from their travels or heritage, even if they are quirky, rather than following trends that are often engineered for product marketing purposes.

Final thoughts? My hope is that my rugs will be soft underfoot but, most importantly, provide the intrinsic sculptural vibe for the room in their very foundations.

Explain the intent behind your designs. The colors are predominantly neutral, and often punctuated by an almost-black hue: the goal is to provide a luxurious and quiet backdrop for a room, becoming part of the shell. A connection to art is a quality the well-informed usually seek, which in turn gives the rugs more meaning and presence despite their simple designs.

TATE MODERN

Switzerland-based architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron is giving its celebrated Tate Modern in London a new addition in the early summer. Located at the south end of the iconic former Bankside Power Station building and clad in brick to match the existing structure, the façade’s material is laid out in a perforated-lattice pattern, allowing for interior lights to cast a glow in the evenings. Inside, galleries in a variety of sizes and shapes will provide room to show both the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions as well as performance works. tate.org.uk

THIS YEAR, EXPANSIONS AND NEW CONSTRUCTIONS YIELD A CROP OF FRESH, COMPELLING SPACES FOR ART AND HISTORY IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD.

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LISA BINGHAM DEWART

In the United States and across the pond, cultural institutions large and small have tapped some of the world’s leading architecture firms to create and expand homes for their dynamic collections. Inspired by a dizzying assortment of sources— history and their civic landscapes to name just a few—the spaces opening this year further the dialogue about how art and culture are displayed and discussed in the new millennium.

With the Whitney having decamped for new digs downtown, the museum’s former Manhattan home will provide The Metropolitan Museum of Art with room for an expanded slate of 20th- and 21st-century offerings within the landmark space designed by Marcel Breuer in the mid-1960s. Under the guidance of New York architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle, the building’s concrete walls, stone floors, bronze fixtures and lighting will be restored for a March opening, with special consideration given to preserving the building’s historic patina. metmuseum.org ▲ SFMOMA

International architecture and design firm Snøhetta’s vision for a hugely expanded San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) provides 130,000 square feet of gallery space inside and out, including a vertical garden on a new outdoor sculpture terrace on the third floor. A ground-level space dedicated to free access to the building will play host to such artwork as Richard Serra’s walk-in Sequence from 2006 and will offer a gathering spot for neighborhood residents and museum-goers alike starting in May. sfmoma.org

WOVEN NARRATIVE

FOR ARTIST CASEY GUNSCHEL, INNOVATION AND CRAFTSMANSHIP RUN PARALLEL IN HER NEW COLLECTION FOR MOORE & GILES.

“Leather is not a blank canvas. It has it’s own history and is very much alive,” reveals Chicago-based artist and designer Casey Gunschel, whose recent collection with Moore & Giles has positioned the traditional technique of hand-tooled leatherwork in a new and accessible light. An artist-of-all-trades, Gunschel found previous success in multiple mediums, but it took a move to Southeastern Oregon and the tutelage of a saddlemaker for her to realize her aptitude for hand-tooled leather design. “The illustrative and sculptural aspects of leatherwork got me hooked,” she says. Just as appealing to Gunschel was the level of craftsmanship hand tooling entails. “I believe our connection to craftsmanship is a connection to each other. Through the resurgence of handmade goods, we’re all trying to acquire a piece of what we have collectively lost,” she reflects. Gunschel’s evocative designs give fresh life and meaning to a traditional craft, her artistry a welcome reminder that innovation is indeed perennial. The new collection with Moore & Giles is handmade in the United States and consists of three original motifs: Bellini, Delfina and Freccia—all customizable and innately unique by virtue of the hide—with seven color choices

for the vegetable-tanned leathers, as well as the option of metallic accents. In addition to these introductions, Gunschel also offers completely custom designs through the company, which are welcomed collaborative opportunities and a chance to broaden her own technical and creative horizons. “My current work is an accumulation and reflection on my past,” she says. “And though I continue to seek new experiences to enrich my art, leather is definitely my favorite muse.”

As an artist… Lighting is absolutely vital. The right light can really bring a painting to life, finding the hidden layers and revealing magical depths. I love the idea of… A light fixture that challenges traditional symmetry and shape. The attention to detail in this piece is magnificent, resulting in a beautifully crafted work of art in its own right. Our homes… And built environments should be our playgrounds. I’m entirely driven by playfulness, and I feel that creating opportunities for our surroundings to shine is a true art form. This fixture reminds me of… My theater designs. I used to love creating sculptural, minimalist structures in gold and bronze, which were then dressed with drapes, props and bunting to change a scene in moments.

HOVER CRAFT THE PIECE: Curved Neck Table Lamp THE DESIGNER: Jason Koharik FIND IT: collectedby.com THE INSPIRATION: Flecked with French modernist notes and the delicate tones of the Art Nouveau period, this artfully assembled table lamp by Jason Koharik features a sinuous silhouette that naturally conveys a sense of futurism.

A design risk is… A risk worth taking; basic is boring. This lamp—with its Cubism-esque cylindrical base and whimsical stem evoking a Surrealism vibe—works perfectly with its Serge Mouille-style shade. Jason Koharik’s work is… A mash-up between French modernism and Italian midcentury that has been reimagined consciously to reflect the past while holding true to its own futuristic identity. I always say… Lighting is the jewelry of a home. It adds sparkle and dimension, and it sets a tone that reflects our current state and needs. This fixture is… French, modernist, surrealist, geometric, abstract. I envision this piece… Above a credenza (as a sculptural statement) in a room where the lights are dim, just leaving behind a golden sensual glow; to me, that’s very French and sexy.

METEOR SHOWER THE PIECES: Glacial Sconces THE DESIGNER: Matt Austin FIND IT: mattaustinstudio.com THE INSPIRATION: Brooklynite Matt Austin is used to combining unique materials in his handcrafted works, and here he does it again, mimicking the unusual, organic shapes of a glacier. Possessing an avid appreciation for the arts and adventure, it is Austin’s curious nature that continues to produce exciting works of art.

CYRUS AND RHIANNA SHENNUM JEWELRY DESIGNERS BELLANDBIRD.COM

Handmade objects… Have a quality that cannot be mistaken, and it’s that sentiment that speaks to our antique sensibility. The uniqueness of these sconces… Lies in the way the light passes through the glass through its irregular nature. Also, the textures of the two materials are very appealing—they beg to be touched. These pieces remind us of… A necklace from the Queen Anne period of England, circa 1740, which features bright aqua stones that are made of a highly refractive glass. Behind each of the stones is a reflective foil that gives the impression of being lit from within. The necklace and these sconces are remarkably similar yet separated by some 250 years. They make a statement that… Draws in the eye but manages to have a conversation with everything else in the room.

IN ORBIT THE PIECE: Crescent Table Lamp THE DESIGNER: Lee Broom FIND IT: leebroom.com THE INSPIRATION: The world seemingly revolves around Lee Broom these days, as each enigmatic fixture captivates his loyal audiences. Here, Broom devised a globe table lamp that borrows from the classic Art Deco era but, true to form, remains ever-modern.

Proper lighting… Allows a space to look its best. When well-lit, a room becomes expressive and the finishes can be illuminated to their most desirable presence. Sometimes the best designs… Are created by throwing a spin on a classic idea. It can be so seemingly effortless yet very impactful. Like in the simple approach taken here in the Crescent lamp: a sliced sphere adorned with jewelry-like finishes; it’s comprehensible yet elegant. I love the way… Lee Broom combines familiar shapes and materials to create artful objects. This cosmic fixture would be perfect in a modern study. This lamp is… Dynamic, sophisticated, celestial, sensual and unassuming.

I’m always happy when… Something airs on the side of fine art but is still functional. These pieces do just that. Kalin’s work is so playful and yet simultaneously very refined. There’s an inner dialogue… Between these lights that keeps you constantly piqued and full of questions. Their materials are striking and sculptural, making just as beautiful a statement when not illuminated as when in use. Curiosity abounds… When risks are taken outside of one’s comfort zone. I think being uncomfortable is where real growth happens and there was definite risk taken when designing these pieces. Borrowing elements… And transitioning them into a personal aesthetic with a new mission in mind is essentially what design is. It’s a fun exercise to do with things around your house: Paint your chairs, hang a rug on the wall, dye your clothes a new color.

STARRY NIGHT THE LINE: The Metropolis Collection THE DESIGNER: Tracy Glover FIND IT: tracygloverstudio.com THE INSPIRATION: It’s no surprise that eminent artist and glassblower Tracy Glover looked to nature when creating this collection, revealing a controlled color palette echoing earthy hues and shapes that evoke an ethereal mood and a warmth akin to sunlight.

CHRISTINA BRYANT FOUNDER AND CEO STFRANK.COM

The designer was able to reinvent… A vintage lighting concept to create something fresh; I love the notion of referencing an old idea and taking it to a modern place. The attention to detail… And restrained use of color exemplifies Glover’s emphasis on the handmade. I find her work both nostalgic and new. The juxtaposition... Of the organic, handmade glass with the industrial elements of the exposed bulbs and wire are so whimsical and retro. The mix-and-match grouping adds additional intrigue. The futuristic elements… Are combined with retro organic facets in an extremely refined and engaging way. A willingness to play… Is the result of innovative design and the payoff for taking risks.

WARM WELCOME UNEXPECTED MATERIALS AND GREAT DESIGN MAKE THE TWO MOST-FREQUENTED ROOMS IN THE HOME THE PERFECT CO-HOSTS FOR SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINING.

WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

Kitchens and bathrooms have come a long way since their early origins in the home; once relegated to closed-off rooms and outhouses, respectively, these hard-working spaces have shaken off their purely practical personas, becoming some of the most important rooms in the house. After being taken out of hiding thanks to the ever-popular open floor plan, for example, the kitchen has quickly become ground central for entertaining, with friends and family flocking to oversize islands and counter-height barstools to extend the festivities beyond the dinner table. The powder bath, too, has become integral to establishing happy guests: a little dreamlike oasis to step away from the din of a well-attended gathering. Here, we explore chic, visitor-friendly spaces and the unique products that bring both function and style to the party. LUXESOURCE.COM / 103

TRUE BLUE KAREN WILLIAMS

For this sun-filled kitchen in Vero Beach, Florida, designer Karen Williams went for mass appeal: bringing in bold blues, brass hardware and warm wooden accents to make it impossible to resist. stcharlesofnewyork.com

Share your vision for this kitchen. I knew color would play a large role here, as it adds drama and interest to any room but still feels unexpected and fresh in the kitchen. The spectacular pop of cobalt blue on the range and on the coordinating tile backsplash gives this space a personal and glamorous touch and embraces the clients’ love of the color, which is evident in the rest of the house.

Most important element of a kitchen built for entertaining? An entertaining kitchen, like this one, needs to serve many functions. It must first make your guests feel welcome without making them feel like they need to clean up, and it also must be somewhat easy for a guest to help themselves—with beverage drawers and icemakers readily accessible to ensure comfort.

Why is the custom brass hardware so important in this space? It contributes a much-needed warmth to the kitchen. The beautiful satin brass complements the antique chandeliers throughout the house and plays to the home’s traditional elements. The shine of the metal, too, allows for a striking contrast between the knobs and pulls and the custom milk paint color on the cabinets.

COPPER FEEL While gathering around a dining table certainly has its perks, today’s laidback get-togethers often start at the kitchen island, and designers have been quick to pick up on the trend. From oversize islands to double islands and everything in-between, these monolithic structures are the heart of the kitchen. So, when it came time for Australian designer Fiona Lynch to dream up an eye-catching concept for a Melbourne-based family’s favorite space, she set her sights on adding a handsome sculptural copper accent front and center: a conversation starter in the midst of the room’s minimalist black-and-white palette. fionalynch.com.au

GEM

Making a statement in the kitchen doesn’t have to mean bringing in a striking architectural element or brightly colored cabinets; it can be as simple as setting out a cutting board or trivet that can easily double as art. AHeirloom’s handsome geometric gem-shaped offerings crafted from maple, for example, make it easy to trade in carats for carrots. aheirloom.com

MAJOR STIR Nothing signals a fancy fete better than free-flowing champagne—unless of course those bubbles are being served in a glass that’s just as luxurious. This lead-crystal-and-solid-spun-brass champagne coupe from Lee Broom is modern and sophisticated and is sure to become your favorite guest by far. And the best part? The full collection includes wine and martini glasses, too, giving you even more reason to raise a toast. leebroom.com

The powder room is one of the home’s most exciting surprises in wait. These often-tiny escapes give guests an intimate look at the home’s prevailing aesthetic, which means they should be designed for big impact. In this Toronto bathroom, for instance, designer Vanessa Francis paired a tight geometric floral pattern wallpaper with thoroughly mod black-and-white finishes for a chic, ready-for-anything look. “The wallcovering made the space,” says Francis. “I love that it is interesting and busy but also inherently livable. It set the stage for the whole design.” On the following page, interior talents from across the country share their favorite guest-friendly bathrooms from their own design portfolios. vanessafrancis.com

Desert Retreat Designer Courtney Ziething loves a challenge, and Desert Retreat posed several of them: the client wanted a resort-like setting with a kitchen/ great room large enough to host hundreds of guests and a kitchen professional enough for visiting chefs. “The sheer enormity of the space required a variety of solutions,” says Courtney. She integrated numerous Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, and designed an imposing 20-foot-long reclaimed oak dining table with 22 chairs. She also placed a long, solid-slab wood bar table and nook table in the space for more casual dining and to accommodate additional guests. Courtney designed an additional full kitchen next to the main kitchen, with the ability to be closed off, or accessed from the outdoors—it includes a Wolf outdoor grill in lieu of a range. Everything also had to blend in with the home’s French décor, so Courtney designed and had custom made hand-cracked white mahogany cabinets with hand-forged iron hinges and cabinet pulls. She recently won both Designers’ Choice and 2nd Place Traditional Kitchen in the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest, where the judges praised her design for its “inventive use of a rustic language.”

CURB APPEAL Whoever said not to judge a book by its cover couldn’t have been a fan of architecture. For all of the intoxicating color and texture present in the interior of the home, friends and guests generally form an opinion long before they make it past the front door. Luckily, though, thanks to ever-innovative architecture and the natural beauty of landscape architecture, it’s becoming easier and easier to create moments of equally compelling aesthetic expression on the outside of the home. Here, we take a look at all the ways the industry’s biggest players are pumping up curb appeal.

There’s no hard and fast rule that suggests art has to be reserved for the interior of the home, and that’s a good thing considering how far outdoor sculpture has come from oversize plaster lions on either side of a long driveway. Today, antique architectural elements are bringing personality to the façade, as are quirky sculptural accents like the vintage spotted canine outside this home designed by San Francisco-based Hillary Thomas. “The entrance of a home is the perfect opportunity to give your guests a sneak peek of what’s to be expected when they enter the home,” says Thomas. “A bright door, pretty lighting, sculptural artistic elements or a fun outdoor rug instead of a typical doormat can bring unexpected interest to the home.” hillarythomas.com

Contemporary architecture, by its own minimalist nature, uses a lot less to impress than its more traditional architectural counterparts, which means every element has to count. Fortunately, this is a challenge that modernist Seattle architect Amy Janof is intimately familiar with and one she was happy to visit again when she was tapped to design this family home in conjunction with Helen Hald Architecture. The two added a fresh spin to typical glass-box construction by sandwiching this open and airy portion of the home between two farmhouse-inspired wings that reference the archetypal representation of a house. The result is a genre-bending home with plenty of texture and geometric charm. janofarchitecture.com; helenhald.com

As a result, the team at ETO Doors takes its job very seriously: bringing an element of the handcrafted to the company’s large inventory of offerings available in a wide range of materials— from a variety of handsome wood species to steel, fiberglass, metal, aluminum and more. And, if over 40,000 different in-stock options to choose from aren’t enough, elegant knockers, hinges and high-quality end straps, like the one pictured here, are on hand to transform the entry into a statement-making, one-of-a-kind addition to the home, as unique as the people who live inside of it. etodoors.com

Bold color is known to bring fresh and fearless design to a home, and as owners are beginning to get more adventurous with hue on the inside of their homes, the trending toward palettes that pack a punch has begun to spill out to the exterior, as well. As front doors painted in can’t-look-away shades begin to become a staple in neighborhoods all across the country, examples like this pretty San Francisco residence by designer Myra Hoefer, with its turquoise front door meant to echo the wraparound porch’s soft blue ceiling, make it easy to see why this movement is catching on fast. myrahoeferdesign.com LUXE LOOKS: Whether your style is bright and bold or soft and cheeky, here are some of our favorite shades for front doors with impact: Valley of Fire, Portola Paints & Glazes; Pitch Black, Farrow & Ball; Arabian Nights, Sydney Harbour Paint Company.

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN GRAND FOYER, CENTER GRAND HALL AND LIBRARY

Timothy Corrigan is no stranger to decorating sumptuous spaces with history, having restored an 18th-century château in France’s Loire Valley. So when he was given the task of designing Greystone’s grand foyer, second-floor center grand hall and library, Corrigan, who has offices in both Los Angeles and Paris, knew an extravagant statement was in order. For the stairwell, Fromental adapted its mountaininspired Rockface wallpaper. “It’s like modern art,” Corrigan says. To reflect the Southern California landscape, with its gardens and swimming pools, the company customized the coloration, and the vibrant blues and pinks form a dramatic counterpoint to the house’s stately architecture. “At Greystone, you’re right in the middle of Beverly Hills, and

CH_LX34_Greystone_Corrigan_212-215.indd 212

the wallpaper is meant to evoke that,” Corrigan explains. “It sets the tone for the rest of the house.” Layering styles and periods to give the spaces depth, the designer chose black as an accent, reflected in the sphinx sculptures, the 1920s and ’30s black-and-white photos of California and the ’70s lacquer table. On the landing, Corrigan spotlighted another notable wallpaper, Zuber’s classic 1807 L’Hindoustan, and hung 18th-century capriccio panels in the sitting area. He also introduced pieces from his own Timothy Corrigan Antiques collection, such as a pair of Murano glass lamps, verre églomisé mirrors and 18th-century Baltic chairs, along with contemporary sconces from Fuse Lighting, mirrored coffee tables from Fendi Casa and a colorful rug from Stark.

For the library (left and below), Corrigan created a functional and elegant space that nimbly bridges past and present. Conceiving it as a 21st-century gentleman’s/gentlewoman’s library or architect’s office allowed him to forgo the traditional book-lined space one would usually find in a house like this. Envisioning an eclectic room, the designer evoked the barrel vault that once highlighted the room with a Piranesi-inspired wallpaper from Iksel, while the existing bookcases were fitted with vinyl wallpaper panels from Fromental adorned with oversize images of 1920s architectural drawings adapted from a book that Corrigan found. “There are still bookcases,” he says, “but we draped half of them so that we can hang art. It adds some softness and warmth to the room.” Here, old and new coexist comfortably. There are architectural models displayed throughout, and above the marble fireplace, there’s a Neoclassical mirror from Timothy Corrigan Antiques; elsewhere the designer placed a contemporary table from Fendi Casa. With the room’s warm palette of red, camel, cream and black, reflected in the custom Kyle Bunting rug, Corrigan wanted it to read as a strong space. “It’s a big room, and because it’s a big room, I created multiple seating and work areas,” he says. “It’s meant to look like people use it.” SPONSORS: Farrow & Ball: Bookcases in Cat’s Paw No. 240 in Estate Eggshell. OLIVER M. FURTH RECEPTION HALL

Oliver M. Furth considers himself something of an “atypical” designer, and his transformation of the firstfloor reception hall is as much a work of art as design. It is also a showcase for what he’s passionate about. “This was an opportunity to test the limits of materiality, to push the dialogue and explore how much I could change the space while still respecting what’s there,” he says. The Los Angeles-based designer’s first step was to transform nearly every surface from top to bottom. Starting with the ceiling, Furth collaborated with the L.A. architectural firm Arktura to install an undulating grid crafted from plastic felt made from recycled plastic bottles. “It lends a softness to the room,” he says. “It’s a counterbalance to all the paneling and hard materials.” Next, Furth covered the marble floor with cold-rolled steel that he had cut to fit the space. “The steel feels fresh against all that warm paneling and is a good backdrop for the furniture,” he says. That furniture includes pieces by emerging and established artists from five continents. A pair of sofas, upholstered in a deep blue Highland Court velvet from Duralee infuses the space with bold color. There are console tables re-envisioned by

weaver and fiber artist Tanya Aguiñiga—“She’s taken eight different fibers, all black, and woven and braided them into a crazy, good mess,” he says—and a pair of geometric mirrors by Jonathan Nesci, whom Furth describes as one part mathematician and one part artist. “They have solidbronze frames, and the mirror isn’t glass—it’s polished steel,” he marvels. David Wiseman, the Haas Brothers and Benjamin Kicic are represented, as well, as are Wendell Castle and Michael Anastassiades. “Everything in the room is an original form—there’s nothing derivative,” Furth says proudly. And pulling it all together was no small feat. “My role was a little like being a conductor,” the designer says. “Hopefully, at the end of the day, we created beautiful music.” SPONSORS: Highland Court/Duralee: Fabrics.

MARK D. SIKES GRAND GARDEN HALLWAYS

For the grand halls that connect the main rooms on Greystone’s first floor, Los Angeles-based Mark D. Sikes came up with an effortlessly chic design scheme: a treillage wallpaper forming the backdrop for hand-painted wallpaper panels and small seating areas that extends the length of the spaces. “I saw it as kind of an indooroutdoor treillage gallery,” he explains. “It’s not overly designed or complicated. It’s just repeating things down the halls so that it’s uniform. When you look from one end, I wanted it to feel like one big story, very easy on the eye.” Connecting the décor to Greystone’s legendary gardens, Sikes selected Schumacher’s classic Zanzibar Trellis wallpaper in blue, which sets off the Gracie wallpaper panels featuring trees, birds and flowers. He then introduced comfortable and casual rattan seating from his Lily collection for Soane Britain, which he paired with upholstered pieces from George Smith, elegant gilt consoles and antique French and Italian mirrors. “The high-low juxtaposition of the elegant and the casual, and the gilt and the rattan is stylish but also cozy,” Sikes says. “It’s relaxing and comfortable.” The palette intensifies in the small side entrance at one end of the hall, where a large abstract painting by Virginia-based artist Lindsay Cowles is displayed against walls lined in a lush spearmint-hued fabric from Manuel Canovas; a collection of blue-and-white porcelain rests atop plaster brackets by Bunny Williams for Ballard Designs. “I didn’t want to come in and reinvent what these spaces looked like 80 years ago,” Sikes explains. “I wanted them to be appropriate to what they might have looked like but still feel relevant. You have to have spectacular pieces because Greystone is so spectacular, but I also wanted to create something that felt California casual and inspiring.” SPONSORS: Baldwin: Hardware. CLIFF FONG BREAKFAST ROOM AND SOLARIUM

CH_LX34_Greystone_Fong_224-227.indd 225

Whether he’s designing large- or small-scale spaces, Cliff Fong of Los Angeles’ Matt Blacke steers clear of the temptation to fill them with too many pieces with personality. He appreciates the role of supporting players. “One of my pet peeves is having too much to look at,” he explains. “It’s almost like having too many celebrities in a room—everybody needs attention.” For the breakfast room, Fong created an environment suited to casual gatherings, opting for disparate seating areas over a more traditional arrangement. “This is where someone might enjoy a relaxed morning,” he says.

“One could have breakfast or tea sitting at the sofas with the Frits Henningsen coffee table, as the typical Danish coffee table is taller than most.” For the furnishings, Fong took his cues from Greystone’s European-inspired architecture, incorporating pieces from Lief, such as Gustavian chests, along with two sofas by noted Danish architect and furniture designer Kaare Klint, brought from Fong’s own Los Angeles shop Galerie Half, and from JF Chen, a wingback chair and ottoman by Danish architect and furniture designer Mogens Koch. “We created a room that allies itself with European pastoral living,” he says.

11/18/15 5:36 PM

“Mixing in a few items of 20th-century furniture makes it fresh and a bit ironic. If you choose items carefully, they transcend their usual origins, and you’re able to create something that feels more unique.” A silvery gray paint by Farrow & Ball above the wainscot sets the stage for a faded mural. “It’s meant to be secondary to the furniture and the lighting,” Fong explains. “I like a bit of age, and I wanted the space to feel not like it’s been freshly readdressed but like it may have already been there.” The designer saw the adjoining solarium as an extension of the breakfast room, a comfortable place to have tea, read a book or take a nap. CONSORT DESIGN SOCIAL SALOON

Consort Design’s Brandon Quattrone and Mat Sanders didn’t hesitate when considering whether to take on the redesign of one of Greystone’s smallest spaces, the Social Secretary’s Room, but they knew they had to make it a destination with impact. “It’s a tiny space—only three walls,” Sanders says. “It’s almost like a little stage. But I love a small-space challenge. We saw it as a place where you could get into a little trouble, so we’re calling it the Social Saloon.” Adds Quattrone, “The idea is that someone could walk down the main hallway and stop in for a drink before getting on with their night.” Since the room’s most prominent feature was the fireplace, Quattrone says the pair did something they had never seen or done before: “We decided to build a table that came out of the fireplace.” Working with Caesarstone, the Los Angeles-based duo came up with a tabletop that looks like black marble,

to which they added a brass cap and a midcentury tapered leg, and surrounded it with 1960s chairs by Mario Botta from Eccola. “We wanted to give the room a really fabulous Italian modernist vibe,” Sanders notes. “I love the look of Italian modernism. It feels slightly futuristic, but it’s also very classic, and I love mixing angular lines with more Neoclassical ornamentation.” The walls are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, a cross between deep green and teal. It’s the perfect foil for the custom brass bar shelves over the window and gilt mirror, as well as the pair of Marco Zanuso lounge chairs from Consort’s new brick-and-mortar shop. “We really enjoy creating places that feel aspirational but also totally livable,” Sanders says. “I always ask myself, ‘Will somebody have to be in this room? Do they have to live in this room?’ That’s the benchmark we set for everything we do.”

JANE HALLWORTH DINING ROOM

When Jane Hallworth first stepped into Greystone’s formal dining room, she was struck by the feeling that it was a ghost of a room. In a house that she found both “absolutely splendid and melancholy,” the Los Angeles designer’s love of stories sparked her vision. “I wanted to capture the moment that the room itself became a ghost,” she says. The chandelier has been cloaked, while, in a gesture of tribute and mourning, textile artist Hyla Frank has tied black sashes around the Lief dining chairs. Hallworth compares the atmosphere to that of a stately house that’s been shuttered for the season. There are mementos of happier days, like the dining table’s voluminous wool cloth fabricated by Daniel Pontius, a pair of custom commodes detailed with handengraved feathers by artist Damian Jones, and a circa 1820 English gilt sofa that symbolizes what Hallworth calls “the beginning of the family’s gilded life in the house.” She left the windows unadorned, except for her lifelike bronze moths that are seemingly drawn to the light that streams through. Once a showcase for Mrs. Doheny’s porcelain collection, the room now contains a display worthy of Hitchcock: a flock of white Nymphenburg porcelain birds. “They seem quite innocuous,” says Hallworth, “but on second glance, there’s something a bit untoward going on.” Adding to the mood are Tricia Cline’s eerie white figurines perched throughout. Hallworth attributes her vision to a British sensibility: “You don’t get rid of things in Britain. Using things until they fall apart and then putting a throw cushion over them is actually quite chic.” SPONSOR: Niermann Weeks through Egg & Dart: Decorative urn.

CHLOE REDMOND WARNER MURDER SALON

The lore surrounding Greystone’s Murder Room precedes it, but Chloe Redmond Warner of Redmond Aldrich Design in San Francisco was determined to come up with an approach that was both “beautiful and a little bit creepy,” she says. A fan of de Gournay and what she calls “birdand-branch wallpaper,” Redmond Warner contacted the company and proposed a custom wallcovering. “I said, ‘What if we did a murder of crows?’ ” The result is a landscape on gold paper featuring bare branches and an assortment of black crows. Redmond Warner was delighted. “It’s beautiful and sinister,” she says. Channeling an imagined client, she visualized the room as a painting studio for the woman of the house, who’s an artist and a

zoologist. From the start, the designer had envisioned inky black draperies for the windows. “We met with Sandra Jordan, who has access to these luxurious high-altitude alpacas,” says Redmond Warner. The Urban Electric Co. created cauldron-shaped bell lamps, which are attached to the wall with silk cords and boat cleats. To furnish the space, Redmond Warner looked to sources such as Caste Design—“There’s something articulated about the pieces,” she says—while large terrariums hold dark orchids, bones and butterflies. On the walls are prints by Walton Ford and a large abstract photograph by Megumi Shauna Arai called Clouded Judgement. Notes Redmond Warner: “It looks like sky or smoke. It’s very evocative.”

SARA STORY HOMAGE TO THE SQUARE

The work of Josef Albers shaped New York designer Sara Story’s treatment of Greystone’s grand living room, which features a 1969 screen print by the German-born artist, along with works by Louise Fishman, Ron Gorchov and Juan Uslé. “I’d seen an Albers show at The Morgan Library & Museum three years ago, and it made me want to play with color theory, forms and geometry,” she says. “The juxtaposition of color and shape in this space is motivated by Albers and his use of color palettes and their interplay with forms.” Within the small vestibule at the entrance to the space, Story introduced a contemporary architectural element by building a rectangular lacquer box. “It compresses the feeling as you first enter the room,” she says. “Then you step out and have 20-foot-high ceilings.” At the end of the box is the Albers work. Throughout, there are singular pieces, such as a coffee table by Aurelien Gallet and a marble-and-bronze console by Achille Salvagni, along with creations by two other favorite artists, including a Peter Lane sideboard faced in blue ceramicrelief panels and David Wiseman’s intricate Lattice Ribbon dining table in cast and poured bronze. A contemporary art collector who studies how museum and gallery shows are curated, Story believes the use of negative space can transform a room. “Here, there are three seating areas, so you can all be together, but there’s also space in between,” she says. “You can have a collection of three pieces together, but there’s always enough space for you to let something have a moment. I love color, I love pattern, I love energy, but I also think it’s nice to have serenity and peacefulness and not have a room look like a furniture showroom. An interior should always unfold for you. It’s like a journey. You can always add. You can always collect.” SPONSORS: Farrow & Ball: Minstrel Gallery in Arsenic No. 214 and walls in Teresa’s Green No. 236. Made Goods: Accessories.

Ladies Lounge powder bathroom designed by Luxe Interiors + Design.

ANDREA MONATH SCHUMACHER LADIES LOUNGE

The vision for Andrea Monath Schumacher’s Ladies Lounge all began with a hand-painted wallpaper from Paul Montgomery. “I love chinoiserie and just fell in love with this tangerine color,” the designer says. Another Paul Montgomery paper glows overhead. Wanting the wallpaper to be the star of the room, the designer kept the furniture mostly white. “The room is a little dark, and white furniture is very glamorous and feminine,” she says. There is plenty of seating for Monath Schumacher’s imagined visitors to powder their nose and sip a cosmopolitan: a custom sofa in a window nook and four sculptural chairs that surround a Mario Grimaldi table

are set atop a Samad rug. The bar itself is a vintage Asian cabinet that the designer transformed with the addition of white lacquer, lighting and an antique mirror. Model Christy Turlington holds her own from one wall, courtesy of an oversize portrait by artist Alex Katz. Lending some serious sparkle is Niermann Weeks’ curving, crystalornamented Biarritz pendant, while midcentury French sconces featuring brass cobras contribute to the nature theme, “a play on the Garden of Eden,” she says. To further the feeling of luxury, the designer brought in doors upholstered in a creamy white leather and studded with gleaming brass nailheads and Baldwin hardware.

PATRICK DRAGONETTE A ROOM WITHOUT A VIEW

Greystone may be prized for its panoramic outlook over Los Angeles, but when Patrick Dragonette was met with the challenge of tackling a room with negligible views, the L.A. designer opted instead to create a playful lounge that would draw the attention inward. “Technically, it’s a guest suite, but I didn’t want to just make another one,” Dragonette says. There is a trio of life-size multicolored sheep on casters, a Caesarstone Ping-Pong table and, from his showroom’s inventory, a unique multilevel cocktail table by the noted Italian furniture designer Gabriella Crespi. Setting it all off is an ombre gold-leaf wallpaper that Dragonette designed—produced by Fromental—with the witty, unexpected sprinkling of spiders, butterflies and beetles. With Bausman & Company, Dragonette collaborated on a bar of bleached, whitewashed oak featuring insets of baseball-stitched patent snakeskin-

embossed leather. “That same leather is on the barstools— it’s pretty darn chic,” he says with a laugh. Dragonette then updated a channel-back sofa and matching club chairs by the late California designer Steve Chase with velvet upholstery from Duralee and replaced the original rope lighting with LED-lit bases. “I thought they should have a little glow to them,” he says. “I have owned them for quite some time, and this was the perfect moment to use them.” The room’s palette of blue, black and gold is underscored by a hair-on-hide six-part folding screen—featuring a pair of giant macaws—that Dragonette designed and Kyle Bunting executed, while oversize black-and-blue striped drapery made of Duralee cotton-sateen hangs behind the sofa, its trim of blue and black beads adding “a little sparkle,” he says. “I wanted to create a place to hang out, kick back and have fun.”

AMY MEIER EAST END GRAND HALL

Amy Meier approached designing Greystone’s second-floor east end grand hall, study and sitting room as if she were designing “a mini house.” The designer, whose home base is in Rancho Santa Fe, California, envisioned her clients as a couple who love to entertain. “They live grand but are also very casual,” she says. “The entry is where they greet their guests, handing them a cocktail as they progress through the space.” Here, a Paul Montgomery wallpaper sets the tone: “It’s a very California take on the traditional mural,” she says. But just when you think Meier will adhere to a more classic aesthetic, she places a series of mirrored sculptures by Lori Cozen-Geller down the center of the hall. “It was important to have that kind of ‘wow’ factor,” she explains. “The reflection of the mural allows them to feel both organic and modern.” Suspended above is a chandelier in rock and smoke crystal. Devised as a chic dining spot, the far hall is outfitted with a dining table covered with a customappliquéd table skirt and antique chairs atop a graphic modern rug by Samad. The adjacent study is a “quiet, moody space,” where set against walls of Venetian plaster is an antique Swedish secretary from C’est La Vie Antiques. And recast as a sitting room, the reading alcove is now “an intimate gathering space,” Meier says. “This design is all about freshening things up and giving the room a new take.” SPONSORS: Caesarstone: Stone pedestals. BRIT KLEINMAN BUTLER’S KITCHEN

Leather isn’t a material typically associated with kitchen design, but when Brit Kleinman learned that Greystone’s upstairs kitchen was once used to prepare wild game shot on the estate, inspiration bells started going off. The artist and founder of the Brooklyn-based firm AVO is widely known for exploring the possibilities of leather for products and décor, and she had a vision for how to incorporate her distinctive leather tiles that would filter the space through a contemporary lens. To bring Greystone’s kitchen to life, Kleinman focused on using classic materials in a new way. “Hand-painted leather tiles and soft hides offer an unexpected and opulent twist on traditional butcher shop tiles,” she says. “They add warmth and life to this functional space.” Here, Kleinman employed her tiles in two ways: There’s one wall clad in graphically patterned blue leather tiles, while the rest are covered in textured whitewashed leather. “The kitchen is actually the perfect place to put leather,” Kleinman says.

“It’s so versatile and durable.” The material also plays well with the concrete-like countertops by Crossville and oak-plank floors from Virtu. Fellow Brooklyn company Uhuru supplied the Stoolen stools, whose tops resemble end-grain butcher’s block, along with a custom round island. “I didn’t want someone to walk in and say, ‘Oh, I’m in a meat shop,’ ” Kleinman explains. “I wanted to tie in the idea without being obvious.” The kitchen also features a Dacor range and hood, a modern pendant from Brendan Ravenhill and range cabinets by Funtime Cabinet Factory. Greystone was one of Kleinman’s first opportunities to do an interior from start to finish, and she’s delighted that she can challenge people’s perceptions about leather. “It can really go anywhere,” she says. “From a durability point of view, leather can pretty much stand up to any kind of space. And it adds a unique warmth and texture that you don’t get with ceramic or wallpaper.”

ANDREW BROWN LE SALON DE REPOS

What was once the nursery for Ned and Lucy Doheny’s youngest son, Timothy, has been reimagined by designer Andrew Brown as the sophisticated study of a world traveler. “Before the house was completed, Ned and Lucy had been to Europe with their designers and scoured the continent for their interiors,” Brown explains. “What if Timothy had grown up and gotten inspired by the things that he had seen with his parents? Maybe he turned his former bedroom into his study. It would be a place to display the art he has accumulated. It’s a room to be inspired or to think or to relax in.” Contributing to the space’s “very traveled perspective” and covering the barrel-vaulted ceiling is a subtle mural by artist Jan Roberts that was inspired by Matisse’s La Danse, while on the walls, which are done in a Phillip Jeffries grass cloth, artist William McLure has drawn sketches in charcoal. Elsewhere are wall sconces by Serge Mouille

and Lladró, a Directoire daybed, Kyle Bunting hair-on-hide upholstered pieces, a Moroccan pouf by John Derian and a David Hillegas photograph shot in India. Brown asked the artisans he regularly collaborates with from his home base in Birmingham, Alabama, to create classically inspired pieces with a modern sensibility, such as a table in quarter-sawn white oak made in the style of Jean-Michel Frank, a Giacometti-influenced custom iron bench and a writing table inspired by an old Greek desk that Brown himself saw on one of his frequent visits to Europe. Balancing what the designer describes as the room’s more masculine features are silk, velvet and glazedcotton fabrics from Jim Thompson. “I’ve taken all these different elements from when the family would have been in Europe and applied them in a more modern way,” Brown says. “What’s very American in design is to mix all of these cultures, elements and styles together.”

PLATNER & CO. FEMME SUITE

The mother-and-daughter design team of Peggy Platner and Tessa Platner took on the challenge of transforming what was once a boy’s bedroom on Greystone’s third floor. Employing their signature light and feminine style, the California-based pair overhauled the space into a soft, romantic guest retreat. Expanding on Peggy’s vision of a luxurious haven for a movie star from the 1940s or ’50s, the duo created a getaway for a woman with what Tessa calls “classic, timeless taste.” An opulent wallpaper from Stark—Paper Rose—sets the mood. “It’s a romantic, large-scale print of blossoms in warm, feminine colors and highlighted with gold,” Tessa says. The paper is a fitting backdrop for Platner & Co.’s Femme bed, swathed in a new blush-colored Montara velvet from the Peggy Platner Collection, which offers a contemporary take on luxury. “The bed is completely upholstered, even the legs,”

Tessa says. “It’s very feminine and soft, with modern lines.” The designers also created bespoke bedding for the room. “The custom details—the bedding and the pillows—is something we’ve always loved to do,” Peggy says. Adds Tessa, “All those little facets matter so much. And we want our fabrics to be very usable.” A pair of commodes in a bleached-and-lacquered koa-wood veneer by Jean de Merry joins Fuse Lighting’s frostedrock-crystal-embellished Ramona sconces, procured through Thomas Lavin, to add touches of glamour along with a Samad rug. “I picture the room in the early morning light, with the blossoms and the sheen on the wallpaper feeling really luminous, airy and soft,” Tessa notes. “The light that comes in from the side of the house is just stunning. This is a place you want to relax in; it’s a place where you can read a book on the window seat.”

BENJAMIN VANDIVER SAUVAGE LOUNGE

Billy Baldwin’s legendary Matisse-inspired print for China Seas, Arbre de Matisse, was the launching point for Nashville-based designer Benjamin Vandiver’s transformation of the second-floor west end grand hall, which also celebrates the iconic tropical aesthetic of The Polo Lounge at The Beverly Hills Hotel. “Instead of creating something brand-new, I looked to the past to see what inspired me,” he explains. “I could have done it in a very formal way as it once was, but I thought, ‘What is my interpretation of Los Angeles and how does that fit in Greystone?’ This room was a nod to those influences.” Vandiver has been fascinated with architectural layouts and houses since he was a boy, and after giving serious thought to how the hall connected to the rooms around it, he decided to make the space itself the focal point. “What I tried to do was take a few things I love

and blow them out of the water and have a little fun along the way,” he says. Zak+Fox’s new Sauvage print, an homage to Matisse, made the fun part easy. “I took a minimalistic approach and used the fabric for the walls as well as the upholstery,” Vandiver says. To complement the print, the designer introduced a blush hue for the pillows and ceiling. There is also a 1970s-inspired chandelier in white plaster as well as a round center table and settee by Sabin. For the small foyer off the bedroom suites for Mr. and Mrs. Doheny, Vandiver selected Farrow & Ball’s Mahogany for the walls and skirted a console in the same Zak+Fox print. Monochromatic textile reliefs by Los Angeles-based artist Mary Little adorn a wall. “This space provides a cool, easy transition to those rooms,” he adds, “a quiet, subdued moment that sets the tone for relaxation.”

NINA CAMPBELL MR. DOHENY’S SUITE

CH_LX34_Greystone_Campbell_252-255.indd 253

The indefatigable British designer Nina Campbell embraced the challenge of transforming what was once Ned Doheny’s suite, but she made it clear that she views the age of the house a bit differently than Americans might. “In England, we find it quite new,” she quips. She imagined Mr. Doheny as a gentleman in his 30s—“rather sophisticated, rather forward-thinking and wanting a super-comfortable room where he can have his breakfast at the window, write his letters from the desk and read,” she says. “It’s really a bedroom/sitting room for him, so that, if necessary, he’d never have to leave. He could

just wear a silk dressing gown and stay there all day after a massage, which, of course, he’s going to have in the massage room.” A portrait of Edward Doheny, the oil tycoon who built Greystone for his son, Ned, and his family, hangs on the wall; the painting was procured by Campbell from the Doheny descendants. The designer then chose a palette of soft greens—“In a way, I’m forcing him to become slightly English,” she says, laughing—in fabrics from her own collections. Lining the walls is Khitan, which she calls “a rather grand cotton damask.” For a chair and the draperies, she used her own Penglai,

11/18/15 5:33 PM

a “painterly” fabric with birds and colors such as yellow, coral and aubergine. “And the chaise is in a fabulous velvet from our collection that you want to curl up and go to sleep on,” she adds. Because “everyone expects English people to produce a four-poster,” Campbell has done just that, with a John Rosselli & Associates bed hung with dark green drapery fabric and outfitted with a box spring and mattress from Vispring. There are pieces from Soane Britain and lighting from Christopher Spitzmiller and Collier Webb. But rather than finish the room with a stately Aubusson carpet, Campbell chose a Stark woven matting. “It sort of debunks the feel of the rest of the room—which is very English country house,” she says. “With the damask on the walls, I didn’t want the room to be fuddy-duddy. I like the throwaway line of having the matting on the floor.” SPONSORS: Farrow & Ball: Trim touch-up in New White No. 59 in Estate Eggshell. Rohl: Faucet. Vispring: Box spring, mattress.

BETH WEBB MRS. DOHENY’S SUITE

Beth Webb’s favorite era in American architecture is the 1920s, so when she discovered Greystone was built between 1925 and 1928, she knew it was a match made in design heaven. “The mastery of scale and proportion is just pitch-perfect,” she says. “The space feels livable, warm and welcoming.” Designing Mrs. Doheny’s suite meant playing up the architecture by creating a quiet and timeless aesthetic. “In a way, I designed this room for myself,” she says. “I like quiet; I like tranquility. Our lives are crazy all day, every day, especially in our world of interior design. When I go home, I want my house to be a refuge. I don’t want trendy or colorful or quirky. I need a retreat with a soft palette.” To reflect the room’s ethereal natural light, the Atlanta-based designer conceived a shimmering palette of creams, golds and silvery grays. A luxurious Kyle Bunting hair-on-hide rug is displayed underfoot, and embroidered draperies and fabrics from Hodsoll McKenzie for Zimmer + Rohde abound throughout. The custom fourposter is by Dessin Fournir, through Ainsworth-Noah, and features sumptuous bed hangings by Atlanta workroom Willard Pitt, along with a pleated silk canopy. De Gournay’s Osman Pomegranate silk damask paper lines the bedroom

walls, and antique giltwood mirrors from Therien & Co. hang in both the bedroom and the bathroom. For the dressing room, Webb focused on a clean-lined design emphasized by white lacquer walls. She then covered the hardwood floor with another Kyle Bunting hair-onhide rug. The designer also turned to LA Closet Design to outfit the dressing suite with custom fabric drawer inserts and vintage designer gowns. “One of my missions with this room was a return to luxury, craftsmanship and quality,” she says. “I want to see the pendulum swing back to more bespoke, extraordinary goods.” SPONSORS: Baldwin: Door hardware. BRIAN PAQUETTE BOY’S BEDROOM

When Brian Paquette began contemplating his design for what was originally a second-floor boy’s bedroom at Greystone, he stepped back a few decades, imagining a 1960s California getaway for sisters Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill. “Jackie and Lee forgo going to Newport, Rhode Island, and instead head West,” he recounts, hypothetically. Juxtaposing the formality of the women’s lives on the East Coast with the easy California lifestyle, Paquette saw the design as an opportunity to merge ideas from his own childhood in Newport with the more contemporary work he does from his home base in Seattle. Working with a small group of longtime vendors, such as Lawson-Fenning and Zak+Fox, he relied on “low and lounge-y” seating arranged in two areas. “This is where Jackie and Lee entertain, read a book, hang out,” he says. A painting made for the room by Atlanta artist Michelle Armas hangs above an indigo sofa, while layers of rugs, including an antique Moroccan rug from Samad, cover the floors. The room also has lighting by Los Angeles artist Jason Koharik and four lamps by California potter Victoria Morris. For the walls, Paquette describes the hue as “a dirty pink, the color you’d see on the side of a building in Rome.” The finishing touch for visitors? “I want them to picture sitting here with a Negroni cocktail in their hand,” he says. MASSUCCO WARNER MILLER GIRL’S BEDROOM

Julie Massucco Kleiner and Melissa Warner Rothblum of Massucco Warner Miller in Los Angeles and Seattle love using color and pattern in their interiors, but they also understand the value of restraint. “You can use a lot of color and pattern if you do it in a way that feels clean and not too over the top,” Warner Rothblum explains. Wanting their design of the second-floor girl’s bedroom and dressing room to appeal to women of all ages, they injected the space with a lively air. “We wanted to speak to the architecture but still make it feel modern,” Massucco Kleiner adds. “There are elements that are a little rougher, and others that are a little more glamorous.” Anchoring the room is a graceful four-poster from Made Goods fitted with a headboard upholstered in a glazed mint linen from Schumacher. It’s an unexpected touch against the wallpaper from de Gournay, which features

large peacocks on an antiqued rose metallic ground. Since the designers viewed the wallpaper much like art, there’s just one special piece, an evocative photograph by Angelo Monserat made using birthday candle smoke. It is displayed above a dresser discovered at a vintage store in L.A., which was refinished and decked out with a colorful collection of knobs. “Using an older piece adds a little soul to the room,” says Warner Rothblum. When their search for blush-colored drapery fabric came up short, the designers looked for something “off the bolt” and came up with a vintage wool-sateen to which they sewed stripes of braided orchid leather. To connect the bedroom to the dressing room, they had a Stark rug cut to the dimensions of the spaces, choosing a Moroccan-style area rug in mint and plum from Woven Accents for the bedroom and a Tai Ping rug in blush, mint and orchid for the dressing room.

LAUREN LIESS THE STAIR TOWER SITTING ROOM AND TERRACE

Lauren Liess loves the juxtaposition of contrasting elements in an interior: raw and refined, simple and formal, white and black. For her transformation of Greystone’s third-floor stair tower sitting room and adjoining terrace, the Great Falls, Virginia-based designer had a vision for playing up the transition between indoors and outside. Farrow & Ball’s matte Pitch Black on the walls made the contrast a dramatic one, accented by a custom version of the designer’s own Wild Chicory linen, which she used at the windows. An ornate gilt console and a lamp made of driftwood sit side by side, while at the center of the room, a quartet of clean-lined Lee Industries chairs upholstered in white are offset by green pillow fabric and plants. “I wanted to do a play on the theme of light and dark,

the idea of going from inside to outside where it’s light and bright,” Liess explains, adding that she loves a hint of “offness” in a room. “For me, that makes me think more than when something is perfect or impressively beautiful. When you put something against its opposite, it makes you appreciate it a little more.” On the terrace, Liess continued her strategy of pairing sophisticated and more natural and sculptural elements, incorporating pieces such as a whiteupholstered sectional, also from Lee Industries; pillows from Frontgate in black, white and green; concrete cocktail tables; and a teakwood coffee table. “Whether an interior is formal or casual, I like it to feel relaxed, collected and natural,” she says. “Having a bit of simplicity even in a formal space with a lot going on keeps things interesting.”

FRANCES MERRILL BOY’S BEDROOM

A pair of nautical flags purchased on eBay became the driving force for Frances Merrill’s redesign of a boy’s bedroom and bathroom on the third floor. “Once we decided to use them, I went and purchased the rest of them,” she explains. Merrill, of Los Angeles’ Reath Design, envisioned the space as a room for Ned and Lucy Doheny’s eldest son. “When you have a little boy, you go in with your decorator and put up wallpaper and put the furniture in and then you kind of leave it alone,” she says. “As the son got older and his tastes evolved, that other layer came in. To me, that’s interesting. If you can look at a room and learn something about the person who lives in it, that’s good design.” Here, the walls are covered in a wallpaper from Farrow & Ball called Hornbeam. Says Merrill, “The idea was that it was there when the room was first decorated, so it’s more neutral. They wouldn’t have gone through the trouble to change

it. You get this more layered effect, which I like.” Hung against the paper, the flags serve as art. “They’re never going to feel refined,” Merrill says, “but once they’re placed on the wallpaper, they feel elevated.” Merrill designed the beds, which she covered with vintage quilts, fur throws and tailored pillows, for Bausman & Company and paired them with a metal table. “I love beautiful old things,” Merrill says, “but I also appreciate pieces that are more accessible. It doesn’t all have to come from one place. And I really like mixing as many materials as possible.” Vintage rugs from Lawrence of La Brea underscore the layered feeling and what Merrill calls the room’s “collected vibe.” To complement the adjoining bathroom’s vintage tile, she chose a richly textured, colorful Moroccan boucherouite rug, also from Lawrence of La Brea, along with lighting from Lantern Masters and faucets from Rohl.

NATASHA BARADARAN PORTE COCHERE AND SOUTH TERRACE

Natasha Baradaran has spent much of her life between Los Angeles and Italy, so when she was searching for inspiration for Greystone’s porte cochere, she didn’t have to look far. “It reflects the Italian way of living, their zest for life and the overall timeless style,” the designer says. But she made sure the design would also celebrate the ease of life in Southern California. Though the space functions as an entry, Baradaran established plenty of opportunities for guests to linger with furnishings from her second furniture collection, such as a sofa upholstered in an abstracted horizontal pattern of three fabrics, a center table and a pair of X-base consoles. “There’s also a lot of unlacquered brass, which is very Italian 1970s,” Baradaran says. To anchor the space, the designer’s palette mixes terra cotta with grays, greens and white. Baradaran also selected a variety of textures, such as lacquered goatskin—“It’s very ’50s/’60s Italian,” she says— and a wallcovering made from silk and raffia that adorns the faux panels between the limestone columns. For the south terrace, the designer selected furnishings from Frontgate that are light in color. “It allows the architecture, which is such a strong element there, and the view to really shine,” she says. KRISTEN BUCKINGHAM

MRS. DOHENY’S STUDY

Kristen Buckingham conceived the second-floor study for Mrs. Doheny as an extended office, with a vintage desk and comfortable yet elegant upholstered pieces for relaxing. “It serves a dual purpose,” says the designer, whose muse was Jackie Kennedy. “It’s a room not just for a working woman but someone who has a busy life; it’s sort of control central. She works in it; she entertains in it. There’s even a bar for her and her friends for after hours. It’s the perfect place—a room that I would like to have. I’d be in it all the time!” Buckingham, a former portrait photographer, knows all about having a busy life: In addition to her Los Angeles interior design business, she runs KB Bespoke, where she creates custom furniture and lighting for her projects and other clients. At Greystone, she used her own pieces that are clad in fabrics from her KB Textiles

line. She also lightened up the room’s dark wood paneling with a white-based floral wallcovering. “Since I couldn’t touch the existing woodwork, I felt that was the best way to freshen up the room and make it feel more airy,” she says. For the seating, done primarily in a cream linen, she kept the style traditional, but she explains, “It’s a modern, clean take on it.” In the adjoining terrace, Buckingham selected pieces in bleached teak with hand-carved chinoiserie details from her Laurent collection for KB Bespoke. “The bleached teak has a beautiful finish,” she says. “It’s an evolving patina, yet it doesn’t have the dramatic change like natural teak does. It keeps that grayish, powdery look and has a nice earthy tone that’s not too yellow and not too brown; it’s not too anything. It goes well not just in California but with any fabric and any color in any locale.”
