From Les Arts de la Table to L’Art de Vivre The Refined Art of Living with THG When in the presence of remarkably well-crafted products, a euphoric feeling immediately overtakes the senses. A powerful sensation that’s substantial yet sensual, palpable yet difficult to define. The beauty, the craftsmanship, the sophistication – the qualities of these immaculate objects seem to transcend the everyday world, possessing a unique inner glow. A true je ne sais quoi. Few brands embody these traits like Lalique, DAUM, Baccarat, Christofle and Manufacture de Monaco; world-renowned ateliers with rich histories rooted in masterful and meticulous craftsmanship. These recognized brands leave no detail overlooked, creating products of the highest quality and splendor for the most discerning tastes. In the decorative hardware world, only one other company brings this same quality and sensuality to the bath: THG-Paris®. Handcrafting exquisite faucets and accessories to the highest possible standards, THG’s artisans tool, cast, mold and finish each product using celebrated techniques passed down through generations. Because of this fine legacy, THG is constantly on the search for ways to design products that resonate with their audience while communicating their distinctly understated elegance and sophistication. Oftentimes, THG’s collaborations begin with an idea from one of these distinguished brands. An exceptional detail, embellishment or design that inspires THG to craft it into a unique collection – and experience – for the home and bath. THG turns to these world class brands to help make their inspired creations, and in turn, these brands entrust THG with their reputations because they know only THG is capable of meeting their extraordinary standards. Through luxury collaboration, THG has perfected the refined art of living – bringing opulence and artistry to fine baths everywhere.

Adorned with intricate lotus leaves and delicate palmettes, THG’s Malmaison translates this iconic Christofle pattern into pure artistry for the bath. Christofle, the premier designer of French silver and decorative arts in jewelry, tableware and home accents, entrusts two of their most iconic patterns to THG.

THESE EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH: CARTER HARDWARE, INC. 153 N. ROBERTSON BOULEVARD BEVERLY HILLS, CA 90211 310.657.1940 CARTERHARDWARE.COM

A bold work of artistry, Rose’s delicate DAUM crystal handles offer beautiful variations in color, with no two alike and each piece signed.

A finer example of THG’s meticulous crafting capabilities could not be better translated than with THG’s interpretation of Manufacture de Monaco’s iconic Alhambra pattern. Monte Carlo incorporates 24 karat gold, porcelain and Swarovski® crystals to create this impeccable design for the bath.

With the official title of “Purveyor by the appointment of His Serene Highness the Prince of Monaco,” two new collections by THG were created in collaboration with the esteemed porcelain house Manufacture de Monaco.

DAUM, the legendary French art crystal atelier celebrated for its mastery of the pâte-deverre technique, uses a lost-wax method to make a mold for the sculptural elements incorporated into THG’s Rose.

The magic of Lalique crystal combines with the artistry of THG to create Dahlia, a seductive new design modeled after the famous Dahlia beauty box created by René Lalique in 1931.

Bearing the distinctive Baccarat imprint, Pétale de Cristal offers beautiful, deep colors in opulent crystal. Each translucent, lotus flower-shaped handle becomes a true bathroom jewel that could only be conceived by THG.

For more than a decade, THG has collaborated with Lalique, a brand internationally recognized for creating crystal objects d’art, jewelry and beautiful porcelain.

Baccarat is internationally renowned for their unparalleled quality, clarity and intense colors in crystal, and THG has translated this mastery flawlessly in numerous collaborations. Both THG and Baccarat have been awarded the prestigious EPV Quality Label, illustrating that THG’s brand and standards are in perfect symmetry with the crystal atelier.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Five years into the new millennium, a small group of impassioned trailblazers set out to conquer design across the country. No easy feat for this band of outsiders. We plunged ourselves into design markets, from Texas and Chicago to Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Editors were deployed to scout projects; stylists were tweaking and polishing; architectural photographers snapping. Whew! We were productive, launching markets, publishing projects and networking.

On behalf of the editorial team, we hope that you enjoy this celebratory issue of Luxe Interiors + Design. On to another exciting decade ahead‌

Ten years later, we have grown Luxe Interiors + Design from a single regional magazine, Luxe Colorado, to a national design brand. Through the decade our mission has remained: to inspire our readers and direct them to the best local and national resources that enhance a well-lived life. We are proud to have given voice to thousands of interior designers, architects and builders from across the country, an entire industry dedicated to high-end residential design.

Luxe Interiors + Design was honored to attend many amazing events this past fall. Kicking things off was Snaidero’s intimate dinner party in its newly renovated showroom, which features the latest in kitchen and bath design. Also, Luxe hosted a private dinner for local designers and a preview of Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams’ Masters of Modern fall collection. Lastly, we attended the Museum of California Design for a benefit this past October honoring Frank Gehry for his achievements in product design. I’ve been fortunate to be part of the Luxe family for over six years and it’s been even more rewarding as we celebrate our 10-year anniversary. Luxe has put its mark on the design industry and created a name for itself. We’ve never lost focus on who our reader is and continue to find innovative ways to reach the affluent consumer and top design professionals, and we couldn’t have done it without all of our wonderful supporters and advertising partners.

CONTRIBUTORS

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

TERRI SAPIENZA

Writer / Washington, D.C. If I had a spare $20,000… I would use the money for a down payment on a small beach cottage. Favorite Luxe interview? My conversation with Arizona- and Chicago-based designer Kim Scodro about her own house was a total treat. She was so genuine and funny, plus very knowledgeable about design. I could have talked to her for hours—I think I did! What is your biggest creative influence? Travel. Stepping away from what I see and do everyday opens my eyes and reawakens my senses in ways that are always meaningful and necessary. Most exciting thing happening in design today? I’m always motivated by people who have the courage to take risks in order to do or create something they believe in. Whatever it is they do, it’s usually done with such passion that it ends up making a lot of other people happy, too. Photographer / New York

What’s intriguing you now in the world of photography? The ergonomics of professional and consumer cameras coming out onto the market. I think that there needs to be more thought that goes into them beyond the science and technology, such as how they can be more thoughtfully designed tools that are functional, fluid and efficient. If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Buffalo, New York, in the summertime. It has incredible architecture from such amazing talents as Frank Lloyd Wright and Eliel Saarinen that I would love to shoot. I would also like to wander past all the old industrial buildings and dream up what I could turn them into. What type of architecture inspires you the most? There are so many fresh designers that are creating interesting architecture and interiors in Barcelona while still holding true to the history and authenticity of what makes the city what it is. It’s always a tough balance and they are doing a fine job at it.

COM4_Contributors_094.indd 102

CLAUDIA URIBE

Photographer / Miami

If I could photograph anything… It would be the vanishing tribes of the world. What inspires you? I love midcentury modern, with a little wabi-sabi thrown in for its simplicity and use of natural objects and processes. Top three items on your design wish list: I would love to own a Serge Mouille lamp, a throw by Loro Piana or an Easy chair by Hans J. Wegner. Most memorable Luxe shoot? I really like working on the stories for the Radar section. The jewelry shoot I did last year turned out gorgeous!

TARYN BICKLEY Writer / Chicago

Most memorable Luxe interviews? Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio, and New York artist Jenna SnyderPhillips, whose work I would love to hang in my powder room someday. Writer who has deeply influenced you? Helen Fielding. Her early columns in The Independent as fictional Bridget Jones were incredible; her single thirty-something diatribe is so profound and perfect that I still laugh out loud and agree, even as a smug married woman. What do you enjoy most about design? Nothing makes me happier than sitting in a hotel room by London-based Firmdale Hotels. Co-owner Kit Kemp’s mix of prints and textures, and the play of old and new, is completely inspiring. Someday, I hope to rehab a Chicago brownstone with all these compounding lyrical elements.

DEFINING MOMENTS OVER THE COURSE OF A DECADE, DESIGN TRENDS DEVELOP AND SWAY THE MANNER IN WHICH WE LIVE. AS LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN CELEBRATES ITS 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, WE LOOK BACK AT THE FORCES THAT TOOK HOLD AND HELPED FASHION THE AMERICAN DESIGN LANDSCAPE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS AND ARLYN HERNANDEZ

HONEST ARCHITECTURE MATERIAL PALETTES

Architecture has always been the piece of the design puzzle that serves as the foundation for any next-level home and shapes how it is lived in. Contemporary elements (think glass and steel) have long been go-to mediums in the construction world for sleek façades, but honest, stripped-down materials—concrete, salvaged wood, rammed earth—are the new heroes of high-end residential architecture.

“The effect of board-formed concrete is stunning because it is typically thought of as functional with no aesthetic giveback. I love the idea of taking a temporal material like wood and freezing it in time.”

“SIMPLE, NATURAL MATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE ARE AMONG THE MOST LUXURIOUS AND CONNECT US TO SOMETHING LARGER THAN OURSELVES.” -KEVIN LICHTEN ARCHITECT AND PARTNER, LICHTEN CRAIG ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS

“I’D CALL THIS PAST 10 YEARS ‘THE DECADE OF REDISCOVERY.’ MIDCENTURY MODERN IS ALIVE AND WELL, AND I THINK IT IS A PRODUCT OF LOOKING BACK TO A PERIOD WHEN AMERICA APPEARED TO BE STRONG AND HAPPY. BUT I PERSONALLY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE 1960S—DAVID HICKS, ANGELO DONGHIA, PACO RABANNE.”

BACK to the FUTURE METALLICS / RETRO

What once was old is most certainly new again, as designers are paying homage to past decades and ushering in nostalgic silhouettes and retro finishes into modern day. Shag rugs, brass accents and chrome detailing are at home with coveted pieces by Saarinen, van der Rohe and Baughman. Vintage-meets-modern is the name of the game for the new luxury interior.

-JOHN IKE ARCHITECT AND PARTNER, IKE KLIGERMAN BARKLEY

“Metallics are the new neutral. They're the new transitional look; not modern, not traditional.”

“I’M OBSESSED WITH ’70S DESIGN. MY CHILDHOOD HOME WAS FILLED WITH CHROME, GLASS…THAT WHOLE HALSTONESQUE APPROACH. DESIGN IN THAT DECADE WAS GLAMOROUS, IMAGINATIVE AND THOROUGHLY MODERN. IT WASN’T THE LEAST BIT DERIVATIVE LIKE THE DECADE THAT FOLLOWED.” -DARA CAPONIGRO CREATIVE DIRECTOR, SCHUMACHER

What is it that makes an interior worthy of a second glance? Fearlessness. The last decade has come to be defined as one that has seen a resurgence in daring interiors; ones built around explosions of color, pattern on pattern, one-of-a-kind furnishings, rugs and artifacts. These design elements lend personal narratives to the spaces they inhabit, infusing a unique, spirited thumbprint.

RADAR / FASHION STATEMENT

OFF THE RUNWAY

STRADDLING THE WORLDS OF INTERIORS AND FASHION, NEW YORK INTERIOR DESIGNER RYAN KORBAN EXPLAINS THE INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBYN TWOMEY

COM4_RadarRyanKorban_114.indd 114

For many interior designers, working with a fashion brand is the ultimate feat—an opportunity to flex creative muscles not often sculpted in the shelter realm. But for interior designer Ryan Korban, fashion is where he first cut his design teeth. “In a sense, fashion was my first client,” he explains of his early days designing in retail. “It was my job to design around it yet not interrupt it.” The self-taught designer quickly turned industry heads with one übercool space after another and his modern-romantic aesthetic soon caught the eye of one famed fashion designer in particular: Alexander Wang. “It’s such an easy working relationship,” says Korban, who has become synonymous with Wang for their wildly successful collaborations over the past 10 years—from his many storefronts to his own home. “I think the best part of our collective work is that we both consistently strive for bigger and better in every project we undertake.” This commitment to greatness has resulted in a deeper understanding for Korban on the effects each industry has on the

other. “It’s always been important that I understand fashion in order to create interiors where fashion can thrive,” says the designer. “I think people are really starting to grasp the notion that a space can be put together in the same way an outfit is selected.” To that point, fashion houses are now looking to interiors, as “architecture and furniture silhouettes are proving to be huge influences for their brand,” expounds Korban. He further asserts, “designers whose aesthetics are based in minimalism—Jil Sander, Céline, Balenciaga—often turn to interior structures as a source of research.” And though runway collections appear to move at light speed in comparison to interior debuts, the fashion industry is largely dependent on the design world to support their lines. “These days you need to have a well-defined environment to act as an extension of the lifestyle you are selling,” states Korban. Suffice it to say, the synergy between fashion and interiors seems to be an ever-growing one that will continue to elevate each to the next level.

DAVID

JOHN DICK & KRISTA SCHROCK Los Angeles | discinteriors.com

WHY WE LOVE THEM: This design duo conceives spaces that reflect their SoCal surroundings—calm, refined and textured. Each space has a clear point of view, utilizing the natural materials and of-the-earth color palettes they’ve become known for.

LUXE PRESENTS THE TALENTED FRESH DESIGNERS WHO ARE COMMANDING OUR ATTENTION.

In their words: “Always looking to nature as inspiration, we fantasize about designing an inn in Big Sur high on a cliff with views of the treetops and the ocean. We love the idea of creating interiors that age well over time, and that are united with nature.”

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LACY MORRIS

CATHERINE KWONG

San Francisco | catherinekwong.com WHY WE LOVE HER: Recognized for her use

of strong graphic elements and a rich color palette, Catherine Kwong’s interiors are elegant, tailored and, though modern and glamorous, still distinctly livable.

▲ FRANCES

MERRILL

Los Angeles | reathdesign.com

WHY WE LOVE HER: Frances Merrill’s designs are a study in sophistication without being too stuffy. Her interiors are marked with a bit of East Coast prep blended seamlessly with a laid-back California vibe, all characterized with layered textures and lively color. In her words: “My dream project would be to renovate the Topanga Ranch Motel. It is a cottage-style building built in the 1920s to house the road workers expanding the Pacific Coast Highway. It operated as a motel until the state bought it in 2001 and has been empty ever since. I would love to restore it into a 1930s/’40s California-style home, like a location from a Raymond Chandler novel.”

MEGAN WINTERS

Chicago | meganwinters.com

WHY WE LOVE HER: Grounded in an element of high style, Megan Winters layers bold color palettes with elegant yet glamorous and edgy furnishings. Her fearless compositions are often characterized by whimsical nods and a flawless mix of vintage and modern. In her words: “The best advice I have ever received is to live life to the fullest, work hard, follow your passion and always, without exception and regardless of cost, do the right thing. In business and life there are absolutes in integrity. Don’t ever let anyone convince you otherwise.”

▲ BRIAN

PAQUETTE

Seattle | brianpaquetteinteriors.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Embracing all things outdoors, Brian Paquette’s aesthetic encompasses what the Pacific Northwest is all about: a sense of adventure. His designs utilize lots of layering, clean lines and a thoughtful use of organic color. In his words: “I am constantly inspired by the work of others in the industry, whether that be interior designers, furniture and lighting designers, textile makers, artists, ceramicists or photographers. I am only as good as the people I surround myself with and there is some really thoughtful and next-level work being done here in Seattle.”

DICK & SCHROCK PHOTO: D. GILBERT. MERRILL PHOTO: ANDRE VIPPOLIS. PAQUETTE PHOTO: BELATHEE. WINTERS PHOTO: WERNER STRAUBE. KWONG PHOTO: BESS FRIDAY.

In her words: “My biggest design complaint is when there are too many statement pieces crowded into one space; it starts to dilute the effect. It’s all about layering in the elements to speak to each other in a cohesive way so that the interiors maintain a sense of balance.”

HESS

Portland | osmosedesign.com

WHY WE LOVE HER: From sleek, minimal and modern to rustic and relaxed with lots of natural woods, Andee Hess’ designs are hard to pin down. This varied aesthetic is something she equates to design being like storytelling, and that not everyone’s stories are the same. In her words: “I like to take on projects that pose new challenges; there is always so much to investigate and discover. However, residential work is always fascinating to me, as I’m entering someone else’s world and, with that, all of their expectations.”

PATRICK MELE

New York | patrickmele.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Patrick Mele’s bold use of graphic color and prints has earned him an avid following. Both relaxed and refined, his rooms feel as if they could have always been there, loved and lived-in.

PALOMA CONTRERAS

Houston | palomacontreras.com

In his words: “Whether it’s during trips abroad, through books or articles I read or from those that have come before me, there are individuals whose talent, curiosity and contribution astound me. This is what drives me forward.”

WHY WE LOVE HER: Keeping with tradition,

Paloma Contreras seeks out classic silhouettes and timeless pieces, mixing them in a modern arrangement. Though polished and refined, expect pops of color with a bit of glam. In her words: “I would love to design a winery or residence in Napa Valley—one of my favorite places in the world. It embodies effortless, chic American style; laid-back but sophisticated, pared down yet completely luxurious. There’s a great balance of the two worlds unlike anything I have experienced anywhere else.”

CALEB

ANDERSON

New York | calebandersondesign.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: One to take risks, Caleb Anderson’s creations

are eclectic and curious yet polished, and often his spaces have an element of surprise or a moment of the avant-garde. In his words: “I would love to restore a large historic house with solid bones and interesting architecture. I would curate the rooms with antiques and modern elements and create a magnificent garden. I am fascinated not just for these homes’ architectural characteristics, but also for the intrigue of their history.”

COM_LX4_Radar_FreshFaces_116-118.indd 118

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Andrew Brown creates spaces that have history and that feel well-traveled and collected with texture and depth. With a lean toward clean lines in a classic, high-contrast color palette, expect a seamless interweaving of styles and eras in his designs—old and new, masculine and feminine, simple and ornate. In his words: “I’m very curious by nature and am always intrigued by the history behind things. I travel a lot, which keeps my eyes open to new possibilities. In design, I try to look at everything in a different way—my mind is always thinking in terms of how to reinterpret the objects that I see that inspire me.”

RADAR / FUTURE OF DESIGN Stephen Burks, of Stephen Burks Man Made, in his new Brooklyn-based design studio. He’s currently working on collections for Dedon, Parachilna and Roche Bobois, as well as his brand’s participation in this year’s Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in China and The Armory Show in New York for 2016.

WORLD AFFAIRS

For decades, international design has almost exclusively referenced a European sensibility. But I’m interested in a more inclusive approach that considers other world cultures. In the early days of my career, I looked at travel as purely for inspiration. Once I began visiting the so-called more exotic regions of the world and creating with the people there, however, travel grew to be just as important an aspect of my designs as sketching. Going to places like Colombia, the Philippines and Senegal has become an inextricable part of my process and life. My work with various artisan groups started when I was sought out by nonprofits like Aid To Artisans and Artesanías de Colombia to be a design consultant. But as I started to understand

COM_LX4_FutureOfDesign_120.indd 120

MASTER OF THE HANDCRAFTED-INDUSTRIAL MIX, STEPHEN BURKS TALKS AUTHENTICITY, GLOBAL CULTURES AND THE FUTURE OF DESIGN. AS TOLD TO JESSE BRATTER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NOAH KALINA

the role that commerce could play in benefitting these craftsmen, my manufacturing partners and I began to seek them out. I found my Senegalese basket-weaving artisans, for example, at a street fair in New York City’s West Village, and my long-term relationship with them has now included several collaborative trips to Africa to produce the Single and Triple Basket lamps and Material Composition 3 totem. This desire to return to handmade objects is becoming more widespread, and I believe that luxury in the 21st century will be defined by more appropriate expressions of authentic craftsmanship. However, as luxury brands move into new markets, they’re increasingly introduced to new interpretations of what that

means, and of technique and luxury itself. Authenticity shouldn’t be thought of as a marketing ingredient that can just be added to a production formula; it’s about being true to the culture of the product’s origin. But there are always clever ways to combine the hand with industry; in fact, it’s the coming together of industrial manufacturing and handmade craftsmanship, two seemingly disparate modes of production, that is inherently contemporary and innovative. And with this new partnership, the role of designer is shifting, as he or she is becoming a collaborator for change. The designer of the future will be at the center of every discussion of new ideas and social progress.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IS HAVING A BANNER SEASON FOR COFFEE TABLE DÉCOR: HERE, FIVE NOTABLE TOMES BY CREATIVES AND ABOUT CREATIVES TO ADD TO YOUR HOME LIBRARY.

Known throughout the design industry for her traditional and timehonored interiors (as well as her smooth Southern charm cultivated from a childhood in New Orleans), Suzanne Rheinstein is exposing that reputation in her second book releasing this fall. Arranged by rooms— entrance halls, personal retreats, outdoor spaces, etc.—the monograph will offer a detailed look at how to achieve her relaxed, elegant style. Though it’s available in bookstores across the country, we suggest getting it at its source: Rheinstein’s Los Angeles furnishings and home accessories store, Hollyhock. rizzoliusa.com

BLUEPRINT PENDRY SAN DIEGO

The trend of luxury lifestyle hotels has made it to the historic Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. Local San Diego architectural firm Awbrey Cook Rogers McGill paired up with Houston-based design firm Rottet Studio to introduce the $100-million project to the neighborhood in grand style. When the hotel is completed in the fall of 2016, the floor plan will include over 300 guest rooms with 36 suites, a beer hall featuring local San Diego microbrews, a rooftop pool and a 6,200-square-foot, state-of-the-art spa and fitness retreat. Pendry Hotels is a spinoff from Montage Hotels & Resorts, and San Diego will be the first location for the newly launched, design-driven brand. We tend to like how the brand’s creative director, Michael Fuerstman, is billing his new venture, “Think: London hip, New York-paced and California healthy.” pendryhotels.com

HOME Ellen DeGeneres Ellen DeGeneres easily dishes out laughs as one of Hollywood’s reigning queens of comedy. What many don’t know is that she can also deliver impeccable style—having moonlighted as the interior designer for the multiple homes she’s bought and renovated over the years. This exquisite book includes photos of the A. Quincy Jones-designed Brody House, which was owned by art collectors Sidney and Frances Brody in the 1950s and became a hub for Hollywood parties, in addition to other historically important properties. The Trousdale Estates property, for example, was once owned by Kelly Wearstler and served as the setting for a Versace campaign by Steven Meisel. grandcentrallifeandstyle.com

THE CURATED HOUSE: CREATING STYLE, BEAUTY, AND BALANCE Michael S. Smith The man who was tapped to makeover the White House for the Obama administration is releasing his first collection of new work in seven years. In between his presidential decorating duties, he’s managed to take on projects from Manhattan to Montana and London. In this in-depth look at his last decade of work, expect glimpses at his own homes in California, in both Los Angeles and the desert-like Rancho Mirage, as well as his Manhattan pied-à-terre. Woven throughout, Smith reflects on his SoCal roots and examines the role they have played in his work. rizzoliusa.com

HOW WE LIVE Marcia Prentice In this coffee table book that is part interiors tour, part travel journal, Los Angeles-based interiors photographer Marcia Prentice offers a compulsively photogenic look at the various ways creative thinkers—from sculptors and architects to fashion stylists and interior designers—live all around the world. Starting her photographic trek through Athens, Greece, before heading to Marrakesh, Morocco, and back to her hometown of Los Angeles, Prentice examines how each space reflects its surroundings and how the homes artists choose for themselves are ultimately their most personal work of art. teneues.com

SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE Pamela Skewes-Cox and Robert Sweeney Serving as a posthumous tribute to the careers of architects James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig, this book details the Spanish Colonial style that the pair is credited for introducing to homes in Santa Barbara. Characterized by whitewashed stucco exteriors, exposed wood-beam ceilings and deep, dramatic fireplaces, the homes portrayed from page to page are brought to life by the words of Craigs’ granddaughter Pamela Skewes-Cox and architectural historian Robert Sweeney. In conjunction with the release, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum will present an exhibit of their works running through January 2016. rizzoliusa.com

WITH JASON MARTIN OF MARTIN & BROCKETT

#INSTACRUSH

@marycostaphoto WHO: Mary Costa, a lifestyle and fashion photographer whose bold use of color and unique way of storytelling is evident in every image she creates.

WHAT: Costa’s feed is the definition of eye candy, featuring clean, minimal spaces that come alive with plenty of quirky and unexpected accents and a multitude of striking hues. Expect a mix of “happy things”—a beautiful wedding, a styled tablescape or a bright and modern interior. When did you open? I welcomed the first guests to 5449 W. Pico Blvd. in March 2015. Why Mid-Wilshire? This area offers a growing collection of stores and restaurants strung together between auto body shops; it’s very L.A. I used to drive Pico Boulevard going between the Pacific Design Center and my wood and upholstery shops. I thought, “If I’m doing this drive, other designers must be, too.” Describe the space. I designed it as a mix of traditional and modern with natural materials (sea-grass rugs, linen-wrapped shelves) and brass accents in a streamlined modern building. On the floor? Of course there’s my own Martin & Brockett line of furniture, as well as a curated mix of antique furniture and accessories and pieces made by local artists and craftspeople. What’s next? I’m working on introducing some sculptural tabletop pieces (serveware, trays, ceramics) and slowly adding to my line of furniture with a couple of upholstery pieces and new wood items. martinandbrockett.com

WHY: Though documenting the beauty in our world certainly plays into Costa’s obsession, it’s the collaboration with other creatives that ultimately feeds her passion and makes her account worth following. IN HER WORDS: “If you’re looking for other inspiring Instagrams, I constantly go back to @justinablakeney for her bohemian interiors, @jumbledonline for its eclectic home products and @splendid_rags for her colorful style.”

Various showrooms across the West Hollywood Design District are inviting industry insiders and enthusiasts to gather in November for “The Future is Now,” an in-depth design symposium. Throughout the events, guests will be encouraged to engage with good design through discussions and panels led by the area’s most creative minds. In case you missed it, Luxe tapped key players of the event to get their take on what’s new and now in design. westhollywooddesigndistrict.com GINNA CHRISTENSEN CREATIVE DIRECTOR, WOVEN ACCENTS

Having a moment: It is extraordinary what Apparatus has been able to accomplish in just three years. I think their success is directly related to their willingness to take risks and their incredible storytelling ability.

Looking forward to… The evergreen and legendary Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The 450,000-square-foot, $800-million museum will be about 12 times the size of the Guggenheim’s Frank Lloyd Wright landmark in New York when it opens in 2016 and will showcase art from the 1960s to the present.

What is luxury? For me, luxury is having the time and ability to experience extraordinary things that are unique, elicit emotion and, if you’re lucky, change you in some way. In design, luxury is something beautifully made by hand with details that exhibit the work of the craftsman.

Dream job: I’d love to switch roles with my idol, furniture designer Paola Lenti, for just one day to see firsthand how she works. She is the epitome of innovation.

What’s next for SoCal? Los Angeles has really embraced growth and architecture through their acceptance of public projects, such as the Los Angeles River restoration by Frank Gehry, as well as multiple high-rise hotels on Sunset Boulevard and luxury residential units in Santa Monica. This will profoundly change the city.

West Hollywood itinerary: Start the day at Cecconi’s for a lovely breakfast, then walk down Melrose Avenue and pop into all the fabulous design showrooms—from exquisite, contemporary decorative arts at Gray Gallery and Robert Kuo (left) to standbys like Design Within Reach and Arteriors. One of my favorite hidden gems is Leadapron, a design and art gallery on Huntley Drive.

DARIO SNAIDERO, SNAIDERO USA It’s all in the family for Dario Snaidero, the CEO of Italian kitchen brand Snaidero USA. The company—launched in 1946 by Dario’s father, Rino— relocated to Los Angeles in 1985 when Dario moved the headquarters to The Golden State. Since then, the family-fronted business has built an empire on their high-end kitchens inspired by luxurious Italian homes. Now, Dario’s son, Alberto, is carrying on the family legacy acting as the brand’s operational manager. This year marked the 30th year with Dario at the helm. So, when it comes to knowing good design in the City of Angels, Dario has a few things to share. Here, he walks us through a day in his life, exploring all that L.A. has to offer. snaidero-usa.com 10 a.m. There’s no better way to start your day than at Petrossian in West Hollywood. Settle in for a late breakfast/brunch made of true luxury. I’m a caviar lover, and they have some of the best. Try the scrambled eggs with caviar beaten in. Truly delicious. 11:30 a.m. West Hollywood is one of my favorite shopping districts. It’s also where our new L.A. showroom (above) is located. After breakfast, stop in to say hello and browse our kitchens, and then head out to the other great showrooms in the area. I chose this area because it’s very compact and offers anything I could want within just a few blocks. In Los Angeles, this is hard to come by. 1 p.m. Get in your car and drive over to Rodeo Drive. Here, grab a table outside at On Rodeo Bistro & Lounge, the restaurant at Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel. It’s prime seating for people watching. The place offers fi ne dining but still

feels very relaxed. Executive Chef Olivier Rousselle is originally from Paris, and it shows in his French-inspired menu. There are several delicious salads and sandwiches, such as the Beverly Hills Lobster Club, but the On Rodeo Truffl e Fries have garnered a lot of attention. 2:30 p.m. Some of my other favorite shops and showrooms in Los Angeles are on and around Rodeo Drive. I travel so often for work that when I’m home I like to stay centralized, and Rodeo Drive allows for that. Two of my muststops are Ermenegildo Zegna, a high-end Italian label for men, and Hugo Boss. 4 p.m. My wife, Anna Paola Snaidero, is a painter who inspires me every day with her colorful works (right, bottom). In a world like mine, creative inspiration is critical and finding it at home has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. When we both want to head out together, we

like to spend the afternoon browsing The Getty (right, center). They often showcase new talent, and it’s a relaxing way to get inspired and keep up with the local arts scene. We’re looking forward to “Art of the Fold: Drawings of Drapery and Costume,” an exhibit unveiling this fall. It will examine the use of materials in everyday design and theatre costumes. 6:30 p.m. After a few hours of browsing, I’d suggest Pecorino Restaurant on San Vicente in Brentwood for dinner; it offers authentic Italian food on its menu. My wife and I are both Italian so we appreciate good pasta. I love the Cacio e Pepe that Executive Chef Raff aele Sabatini creates. It’s a decadent spaghetti with pecorino cheese, black pepper and extra virgin olive oil. 8 p.m. Finally, I highly suggest stopping by Il Piccolino back in West Hollywood. They make the best chocolate mousse in the city; it’s the perfect nightcap.

L.A. CLOSET DESIGN

HOLIDAY INSPIRATION + IDEAS FROM

L.A. CLOSET DESIGN’S CEO LISA ADAMS

What type of holiday events do you like to throw? I like to throw intimate holiday events: spending quality time with every guest is important. Los Angeles is a great place to throw events outdoors, even with heat lamps and throws; I love the indoor-outdoor element, which makes for a beautiful night. What are some of your favorite must-haves for holiday decorating? My must-haves would be classic Waterford and Christofle vases and trays mixed with the edge of Kelly Wearstler home accessories. Her candles and frames are fabulous!

My holiday decorating style is elegant and classic, festive and bright. I love lights everywhere.

–Lisa Adams

Describe the perfect tablescape for a holiday dinner. The perfect tablescape for my holiday dinner is one that is not too perfect—one that has bud vase fresh flowers, candles and place cards with names written casually. I also love a table with shared plates. Where is the most luxurious place you’ve visited during the holidays? I spent a memorable holiday in San Miguel de Allende. Such breathtaking architecture, fresh food, culture and charm in this beautiful city.

These remarkable, original works of art by Post-Impressionist master Hugues Claude Pissarro are perfect examples of this virtuoso’s command of light and color. Much like his grandfather, the great Impressionist Camille Pissarro, Hugues Claude’s use of swift, short brushstrokes combine to create the most entrancing and desirable landscapes of the 20th century.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, AS PROVEN BY THESE SIX TASTEMAKERS WHOSE FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE ANYTHING BUT EXPECTED. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA HOLMES

MARY WALLIS LIGHTING DESIGNER MARYWALLIS.COM

First Impression: Substantial, modular, biomimicry, symbolic, meticulous. Artistry: Erin’s work preserves fragile, found-in-nature forms in bronze: beetles, feathers and snakes are all frozen forever in time. These organic elements are combined with geometric patterns distilled from biology, ancient symbols and precise modern shapes to create a collection with references that span centuries. Material: The polished-brass base is very satisfying; I respond to the honesty of the material. Luxury: When the bespoke nature of the piece is evident, that is luxury. First Impression: Simplistic, harmonious, teasing, light, elegant. Staying Power: Calvin Klein has managed to create interesting variations on traditional home pieces, elevating their elegance while keeping a level of simplicity that allows for each piece to complement a variety of styles. Form + Function: The juxtaposition between the glass and stone materials, while repeating the same square form within both, produces a gradation of transparency to opaque. Ethos: Playfulness brings a humanistic element to a design. Without it, the simplicity would feel sterile. Found: This table should live somewhere the light would constantly change, showing off the transparent levels of the base.

First Impression: Irregular, solid, man-made, cozy, precious. Finishing Touch: The glossy brass finish and textured exterior create a dialogue between the inside and out. Construction: Nested inside one another, the irregular shapes resemble something that comes from nature but is flecked with a human touch—a human intervention rooted in exceptional craftsmanship. Chances Are: Risk leads to great, unexpected results. It’s a fascinating way to ideate innovative products. Here, the experimentation within the applied arts led to a successful outcome that feels very natural, like part of the same visual language. Lasting Impact: People will look at these objects 100 years from now in museums and learn about our current lifestyle and contemporary human behavior. It’s these types of pieces that will eventually transcend time.

First Impression: Complementary, elegant, quiet, expressive, balanced. Show + Tell: Every designer’s creative process is wildly different. It is difficult to look at a final piece and know how someone has arrived there. The object will always possess phantoms of the process, but if a work is successful (like here) there is also something that has not entirely been revealed, something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Mark of Success: Balance achieved via imbalance. Memory: Ten years ago I was traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway and there was an incredibly beautiful woman that left behind an Art Deco hairpin similar to this fixture. Muse: Anna Karlin artfully navigates the design process in such an incredibly fluid way without relegating what she does to a specific discipline. Working with this dynamic interdisciplinary approach, she really hones the definition of what it means to create and to be a creative. Storytelling: While it’s certainly true that these chairs exude a modern silhouette, there’s also something nostalgic about them. MATERIAL MAGIC

SILVER AND GOLD ARE MORE THAN HOLIDAY MAINSTAYS: THESE RICH METALS ARE BRINGING SPARKLE TO THE HOME’S POWERHOUSE ROOMS ALL YEAR-ROUND. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

There’s a reason why materials like silver and gold are such sought-after options in the worlds of fine jewelry and art: The metals are as practical as they are beautiful—their patented shimmer and shine as powerful a statement as their longevity. So, it makes sense that as the kitchen and bathroom become more and more like proper gems in the center of the homes they inhabit, that designers and architects alike would begin to implement a bit of similar material magic into their designs—a wonderfully sculptural knob in hand-cast bronze in the bath or a ribbon of brass inlaid into a complicated tile pattern on a backsplash. Here, we borrow the best of bling to celebrate kitchens and baths that are both high functioning and high fashion.

HAUTE DISH CAITLIN MURRAY

Los Angeles-based interior designer Caitlin Murray uses big doses of high-gloss brass and emerald to transform an entertainment-friendly kitchen into a moody, modern masterpiece that is huge on style. blacklacquerdesign.com Share your vision for this enviable space. The client is young and hip and works in tech, so my partner at the time, Caitlin McCarthy of Caitlin McCarthy Design, and I felt like there was a wonderful opportunity to do something fun and out there. When we found the color for the cabinets— Benjamin Moore’s Chrome Green—we knew we had exactly what we were looking for. It informed everything we did.

Favorite thing about this showstopping kitchen? I love the edgy black Marquina marble and the way that the material interacts with the other elements in the space, like the lacquered brass and the rich green of the cabinets. The resulting combination just reads as really luxurious and incredibly bold. Everything about this kitchen was designed to stand out, and that’s what it does.

Why did you opt for brass fixtures and hardware? We didn’t want to do anything that was expected, and I think using chrome or polished nickel would have been pretty, for sure, but more subtle than what we wanted to achieve. The lacquered brass, on the other hand, is super dramatic and reads so perfectly with the color story in the space that I’m not sure the kitchen would feel as balanced without it.

For tile manufacturer New Ravenna Mosaic’s latest offering—the Parterre collection—the company got personal, tasking its consumers with fl exing their creative muscles thanks to the line’s endless possibilities for customization. Designers have been busy bringing gold and brass into the bath to pretty up what has, in the past, been purely practical, and these warm-toned materials are quickly giving tried-and-true chrome a run for its money. According to Tamara Kaye-Honey, the designer responsible for this pretty Southern California room, this change is only natural. “There’s a lovely patina that comes from working with materiels like unlacquered brass,” she says. “Plus, when paired with white, the palette is soothing while also feeling fresh and modern.” On the following page, interior talents from across the country share their favorite golden-hued spaces from their own design portfolios.

PATTERN PLAY DINING ROOM

INTERIOR DESIGNER SCHUYLER SAMPERTON TAKES A PLAYFUL APPROACH TO A HISTORIC HOME, LAYERING CLASSIC ELEMENTS WITH CHEERY HUES.

PHOTO: LISA ROMEREIN.

Since the house was built in 1936, how did you create a space that is both classic and modern? The goal was to respect the home’s history while making it youthful and inviting. The moldings and wainscoting are original, so the space already offered such beautiful framework for my design; I’ve always been a fan of those classic rooms that have a bit of patina and character. The pieces are all extremely traditional, but I chose classic shapes that would remain relevant over time, mixing antiques with newer reproduction pieces that had a compatible feel. Yellow and blue is such a happy pairing. What inspired the palette? Blue is one of my client’s favorite colors, so we used various shades of it in almost every room of the home. In this room, the wallpaper was really the jumping-off point because I knew I wanted to create a space that was classic but not stuffy. The wallpaper provides a striking dose of color and femininity, and the antique wash of the paper lends an instant gravitas that I love. The deep turquoise of the paper combined with the rich marigold yellow chairs felt like such a youthful approach to the classic materials and shapes. What resonates most with you here? Although I’m stylistically known for being more of a relaxed bohemian, there’s something about this room that I really connect with on a visceral level. It reminds me of a room in one of those charming English country houses that is filled with fascinating eccentricities. Chair Design / Schuyler Samperton Interior Design / samperton.com. HIGH CONTRAST LIVING ROOM

KNOWN FOR HER DISTINCT GRAPHIC AESTHETIC, INTERIOR DESIGNER MEGAN TAGLIAFERRI ACTIVATES A BLACK-AND-WHITE PALETTE PUNCTUATED BY STRONG COLOR AND TEXTURE.

I never knew a room could have such confidence. This room has such a beautiful open floor plan that we wanted it to set the tone for the entire residence, so we decided to focus on the clients’ amazing collection of rock-and-roll photographs by Jim Marshall, neatly displayed on the right wall. The idea behind the entire design was to place an emphasis on these black-and-white photographs, which we did so through the color scheme. The monochromatic tones create this amazing contrast paired with the blue and rich mustard hues.

How you were able to make the architectural features such standout elements? This space originally had so many varying wood tones that needed to be unified and freshened up. We were able to make the beams, fireplace, built-ins and wainscoting stand out with black and white paint, which in turn created a California chic scheme with a slight glam appeal. The high contrast created by the wainscoting lends to this amazing Hollywood Regency vibe, while the horizontal lines of the architectural beams are incredibly soothing.

What is it about midcentury furnishings that incline you to frequent them in your designs? Midcentury design is timeless. The style offers clean lines and adds strength to any interior. For my West Coast projects, in particular, this style bestows a fresh California feel and creates brightness to any space. I am also a huge Palm Springs design buff and always incorporate it in our projects. For example, here we chose fun Palm Springs-inspired chairs, customizing them in white vinyl for easy wearability. I just love a laidback boho look that combines midcentury with a slight rustic feel.

PURE AND SIMPLE MASTER BEDROOM

EQUAL PARTS BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING, THIS MINIMALIST RETREAT BY INTERIOR DESIGNER CHRISTINE MARKATOS LOWE PROVES LESS IS MORE.

There is such a serene, soft aura about this space. Paint us a picture of your color story. The whole house is all about color yet has a very ethereal, beachy vibe to it. While I still wanted to incorporate color in the bedroom, I approached this space with softer, restful hues, choosing feminine, dewy colors reflective of a morning at the beach. I used my favorite paint, Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, on the walls for its amazing reflective quality and Pratt & Lambert’s gray-blue Hesperia on the tongue-and-groove ceiling for just a touch of a coastal feel.

Was your approach for the décor as effortless as the space itself? My design is really about finding the right pieces and putting the story together. There wasn’t a particular piece that was my jumping-off point, but rather a variety of furnishings that came together harmoniously. From the mercury glass lamps and grass cloth chests to the pale blue print on the shades and smoky gray linen on the headboard and bed skirt, it is imperative for a space that has more subtle tones to employ textures as it really helps to pull everything together.

What are your musts for creating a sophisticated bedroom such as this one? My must is ensuring that no matter the style of the space, that it is at least comfortable for the needs of the clients, whether that includes reading, watching television or simply unwinding after a long day. I am not a fan of furniture that is just stuck next to one another and am a firm believer that every bedroom needs negative space. Clutter can become so distracting, and disarray is counterintuitive to what a bedroom is all about.

AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE TRENDS, TIPS AND TRICKS THAT HELP INFUSE A HOME WITH COLOR. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

SHADE SPECIFIC Although neutral living has dominated the home space for quite some time, tried-and-true hues like cream, white and gray have found themselves with some major competition. As homeowners are veering away from playing it safe and toward having more fun in interiors, they’re turning to color to create one-of-a-kind retreats. Whether it’s a bright injection of hue on a well-curated selection of pattern-happy pillows or bold walls painted in a can’t-look-away shade, color is taking center stage. Here, we check in with some of the nation’s top talents on the best ways to bring happy hues home.

With all the many paint manufacturers and cleverly named swatches to choose from, the hunt for the perfect hue can prove to be difficult. From light and airy to rich and saturated, our most coveted colors are ones that are both easy to live with and that beg guests to take notice. Here, we share the covetable shades that have been making the most appearances on our design dream boards recently. From top: Pistachio, Benjamin Moore; CC0127, Fine Paints of Europe; Armoire Yellow, Ralph Lauren.

TURN IT UP Jill Goldberg, founder of Hudson Interior Designs in Boston, goes beyond the pale, literally, as she shares her fail-proof philosophy for designing with color. Do you have a go-to shade? There’s absolutely nothing better, in my opinion, than a vibrant, Hermès-y orange. It’s my favorite color, and I love to mix it in with lots of lovely greens and blues for maximum effect. Typically, my ideal palette is one that incorporates both a warm and a cool color. Best rooms for big color? Give me a small room, and I’ll give you big, bold pattern

COM_LX4_TheReport_194-201.indd 196

and plenty of color. Tiny spaces mean you don’t have to go overboard and fill them with a lot of furniture that’s eventually going to compete with your palette, so they feel more balanced and exciting to me. Share your formula for a room with look-at-me color that doesn’t overwhelm. There’s no perfect equation, of course, but I always try to start with a singular pattern or fabric that brings all the colors I’m dreaming of together. Then, I pull the shades I like out of it— introducing them onto the draperies, trim, carpet and contrast welts throughout the room. hudsoninteriordesigns.com

Yellow can be a bit of a gamble in the design world; the notoriously difficult shade is tricky to work with thanks to its multitude of undesirable undertones. Designer Chenault James of Columbus, Georgia, however, has it all figured out, as evidenced in this soft and sophisticated entry foyer. “As long as I gravitate toward a strong school bus yellow, the color always works for me,” she says. “It’s my favorite shade because it’s crisp and clear and doesn’t feel muddy or weighed down.” chenaultjames.com

STYLED TO IMPRESS Bringing in color through accessories is one of Atlanta-based designer Jessica Walmsley’s favorite ways to fill a room with warmth and personality. And this pretty dining space makes it easy to see why introducing them is so effective, especially when they’re paired with funky patterns and elegant prints. “Accessories, like blue-andwhite porcelain, for example, are the icing on the cake and, other than fabric, are my favorite part of the process,” she explains. “They make a room feel layered and lived-in.” jessicawalmsleyinteriors.com

BLACK MAGIC This moody-meets-majestic breakfast room by Birmingham, Alabama-based designer Rebecca Hawkins proves wrong the common misconception that dark colors don’t bode well in small spaces with style in spades. Instead, the chiaroscuro-inspired aesthetic of this sun-dappled spot gives the awkward corner it inhabits new life; a charming pop of yellow, too, on the upholstered bench helps elevate the room into a cozy hideaway that has quickly become a family favorite. 205.919.8842

WHEEL One look at his color explosion of an interiors portfolio is all the evidence you need that New York designer Miles Redd is used to breaking the rules. For this pretty seating area, however, Redd followed the leader right on down the color wheel—where a perfectly selected analogous palette of yellow, blue and green fills the formal space with drama and intrigue. milesredd.com

THE LOOK / THE REPORT

DECODED

As head of creative for the revered British paint and wallpaper company Farrow & Ball, Charlotte Cosby is an invaluable resource when it comes to identifying color trends. She’s sharing her predictions and picks for what designers and homeowners alike will be gravitating toward in 2016:

9ART

INSPIRATION For interior designer Angie Hranowsky, color is second nature. Here, the Charleston, South Carolina-based talent dishes on how to get it made in the shade (each and every one of them). Go big: The easiest way to transform a room and a space is to paint all of your walls a bold, bright shade. It gives you the biggest bang for your buck; plus, you can always paint over it if you change your mind later. Hang it up: One of my favorite methods to bring colorful interest into a home is to introduce beautiful artwork, like the bottle cap portrait by local artist Molly B. Right in this living space I created. It informed everything else in the room—such a statement maker. Stay small: If you’re feeling a little intimidated, there’s no shame in easing into color. Start by working in more exciting shades on your fabrics or pillows—or place an eye-catching throw at the foot of your bed. angiehranowsky.com

What’s on the color horizon for the coming year? Bold color and colored neutrals will definitely play a big role in 2016. We’re seeing people becoming more experimental as we move out of the recession, and they’re looking to make their homes feel brighter and more confident by using color. Favorite shade of the moment? It’s Farrow & Ball’s 70th anniversary next year, so there will be a lot of exciting launches to look forward to

that will mark the occasion. In terms of my favorite right now, though, it’s Stiffkey Blue (shown here). It’s regal and romantic, a real classic. Tricks for selecting the perfect paint color? I always think the most important thing is to choose a color you love! It sounds simple, but if you want to create your perfect home, making sure it’s decorated with the patterns, paints, artworks and accessories you love is the best place to start. farrow-ball.com

11ORANGE FEEL

There’s no limit to how often and how much to use your ideal color once you’ve finally found it. So, when San Francisco designer Lauren Ranes and her client stumbled upon the dreamiest shade of citrus they’d ever seen, they didn’t hesitate to introduce it again and again into the family homestead. “The color, Benjamin Moore’s Ravishing Red, is tomato, persimmon and watermelon all rolled into one,” explains Ranes. “It’s a dignified and cheerful shade.” The result is a cohesive color scheme that relies on pattern and print throughout to make it appropriate for each space. Here, in the breakfast room, for example, a charming Schumacher wallpaper behind the shelves and blue-and-white ginger jars lend the dining space off the kitchen the touch of formality it required. laurenranes.com

BRIGHT LIGHT Formal doesn’t have to be fussy when it comes to stunning candelabras that are just as handsome during daytime hours as they are when they are all lit up—at least that’s the story Dunes and Duchess is telling with the brand’s coveted four-arm version, available in a variety of colorful finishes. dunesandduchess.com

MODERN CLASSIC

One of color’s most prized properties is being able to bring a fresh, modern perspective to traditional spaces, like it does in this sweet foyer in North Carolina with inspiring architectural detail. Using a palette of soft green and subdued coral, designer Barrie Benson transformed the home’s 1950s bones into a graceful, feminine dream. “I wanted to give a nod to the old without making it feel like one’s grandmother lives here,” says Benson with a laugh. “The palette definitely sets the tone for that. It gives visitors the hint that not everything inside is as conservative as you’d expect from a more formal Southern home.” barriebenson.com

Having experienced a childhood rich with travel, art and architecture, Mark Drexler’s professional pursuits may have been unintentionally developed a near lifetime ago. Led by his parents on transcontinental journeys from a young age, he explored historic buildings and visited art museums. At 13, Drexler began drafting architectural plans for his father, and only two years later, was working alongside a master carpenter building spec homes. The rest, as we say when all the stars beautifully align, is history. Today, the founder of eponymous firm Mark Drexler + Associates is a high-end residential contractor in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The full-service company is recognized for its meticulous workmanship during all phases of construction. “There are always challenges to overcome, and a tremendous amount of information to synthesize and disseminate,” Drexler shares. “I enjoy orchestrating that process.”

sk Timothy Corrigan about his redesign of a Paul Revere Williams residence in Little Holmby and his voice brims with enthusiasm. He’ll tell you about his passion for renovating and how he loved building houses as a kid. “I’d design contemporaries and Colonials and make them out of balsa wood,” he recalls. Fast forward a few decades, and Corrigan has moved beyond hobby supplies to the real thing, designing houses of all sizes, including an 18th-century chateau in France’s Loire Valley. “But I’d never worked on a Paul Williams home before,” he says of this home. “I loved that I got the opportunity to work with one of his famous staircases.” Dating from the late 1930s, the two-story Colonial Revival offered the globetrotting designer the chance to create a relaxed California getaway for his clients, a couple of avid travelers who are based on the East Coast. Over the years the house had undergone several renovations and updates, and Corrigan was delighted to

contribute to its legacy. “Doing a renovation is so much more interesting than doing new construction because you have to work with what’s there and figure out how to revise it while still maintaining its integrity,” he says. In this go-round, that meant working closely with the clients’ longtime builder, Stephen Bloom, to ensure that the new family room, media room and adjoining office wing would blend seamlessly with the original structure. “The new areas are all a bit larger in scale, so the challenge was to make them feel as if they’d always been a part of the house,” Corrigan notes. Attracted to the house’s ample windows and generous terraces, the owners asked Corrigan for a casual family retreat that could also accommodate large, more formal gatherings. “The design of the house definitely drew us to it,” says the husband, “especially the way it promotes indoor-outdoor living.” Corrigan responded with a plan that emphasized livability and comfort and provided an elegant

backdrop for entertaining. “They wanted it to be clean, bright and cheerful, but not fight for attention,” says the designer. In addition to artwork and photographs collected by the homeowners on their travels, the interiors display Corrigan’s penchant for making disparate pieces look equally at home, such as the late-18th-century Swedish secretary and abaca rug that coexist happily in the living room, or the photo-on-metal of the Hollywood sign that hangs above an elegantly tufted headboard in the master bedroom. “We consciously mixed different styles of furniture throughout the house,” says Corrigan. “While the house’s architectural style is very traditional, there’s a younger voice to the way it’s decorated.” The palette ranges from the living room’s crisp neutrals to a burst of red tones in the dining room to the master bedroom’s mix of blues, whites and creams. “People don’t realize how much color impacts the way that you interact in a space,” Corrigan says. “While most of the rooms here are more soothing and tranquil, the bold use of red and gold in the dining room creates an energy that translates to active, alive dinner parties. Who wants to go to a dinner party and fall asleep?” The addition of the expansive family room created more livable space on the ground floor and improved the flow from the kitchen and breakfast room, which had been combined in a previous renovation. “This wing of the house, which opens to the swimming pool and a courtyard with an outdoor fireplace, has become the true heart of the home,” says Corrigan, who used fabrics that are durable and stain-resistant so that the family and their guests can come in from the pool in wet bathing suits and sit anywhere. 230 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Atop the new garage, Douglas Lindfors and Courtenay Choate Moritz, of Choate Associates Architects, designed a 645-square-foot media room accented by French doors and a Juliet balcony. “They were very sensitive to the pedigree of the house and keeping it within the character of what was there before,” says Bloom. Adds Lindfors, “It’s the first thing you see when you get to the property. A traditional windowless media room wouldn’t work.” Below the skylit coffered ceiling, Corrigan made the space suitable for watching movies or just “hanging out,” setting the recliners on casters and centering the seating area on an enormous leather-tufted ottoman, while photos from the couple’s visits to Africa grace the walls. Adjacent to the space is a brand-new office, the work of Mason Kirby, of San Francisco- and Truckee-based Architect Mason Kirby.

CA_LX34_Corrigan_224-239.indd 238

For Corrigan, comfort is the key to the success of any interior. “But it’s more than physical comfort,” he says. “I’ll use outdoor fabrics or put a marine varnish on an antique to protect from spills. You don’t want to worry about how you live in the house, because that leads to feeling uncomfortable or like you have to be on your best behavior—and no one wants to live in a house where they have to be on their best behavior.” The couple now have the perfect Southern California retreat, a relaxed environment for both quiet family weekends and large formal events. The renovation went so well, in fact, that they’ve asked Corrigan to take on another design project. “Tim has so much positive energy,” says the husband. “How can you not want to work with someone who loves what they do that much?”

INSPIRED BY MASTERS BOTH MODERN AND ANCIENT, A STONE CARVER BRINGS HIS WIDE-RANGING WORK TO LOS ANGELES. WRITTEN BY LAURA MORGAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIM NEWBERRY

In his Los Angeles studio, artist Nathan Hunt (below) uses traditional methods to create architectural elements (left and opposite), as well as his own sculpture pieces and furniture (bottom).

L

os Angeles can be visually challenging at times,” says Nathan Hunt, “but I feel you just have to scratch beneath the surface.” And if there’s one thing at which Hunt excels, it’s going beneath the surface. The creative force behind Hunt Studios, Hunt recently moved his primary base to L.A. from San Francisco, and, along with his team of artists, specializes in architectural sculpture, be it stone or cast materials, of a caliber now rarely seen. Case in point: When a TV production company needed a full-scale replica of a Nabataean tomb from the lost city of Petra recreated for a Nova documentary, they called Hunt. But a modern man can’t build an empire on ancient ruins alone. As such, Hunt’s practice also encompasses restoration, conservation and design services, as well as installation work and handmade tile fabrication. “I started carving tiles several years ago because I wanted to work with designers and architects to bring sculpture into residential interiors,” he explains. At the same time, he can often be found in his studio executing his own sculptures and furniture. The common link among Hunt’s projects is his deep regard for history. Even when creating the elegantly minimal Touchstone tiles, made in collaboration with Deborah Osburn of Clé, Hunt looks to the masters, citing Noguchi and Henry Moore as inspirations. And when making something unabashedly traditional—say an Art Nouveau-style fireplace featuring meticulously rendered sunflowers—his classical training shines through: Hunt learned his craft as an apprentice on such sites as London’s Westminster Abbey. Whether he’s working on a public project or a personal piece, Hunt’s calling is not one that lends itself to quick results. “Sometimes with a sculpture, you get to a place where you can’t see a good finish. You just have to forge ahead until you see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he says. “But the ability to make something from relatively nothing keeps me going.”

I

t’s a classic story. A woman falls for the charming beachside hamlet of Corona del Mar after living for several years in Newport Beach. She finds the perfect home and then sets out to feather her nest, turning to designer Brooke Wagner for the job. Here, the story takes a quintessentially 21st-century turn. To guide the designer, the owner turned to Instagram. “I remember her showing us pictures of homes with a bohemian vibe,” Wagner says, “lots of white, and textures accented by saturated textiles, vintage mixed with new.” Wagner settled on a subtle base palette with an emphasis on whites and grays, giving her client the serene backdrop she craved and harmonizing with the home’s clean modern lines, high ceilings and wide-open layout, the work of architect Christopher Brandon. “It was all about removing as many walls as we could in the primary living spaces, with a lot windows to bring light into the house,” he explains. “We tried to create something simple, with two strong gables and symmetry off the master bedroom, to make a powerful statement. You can’t have too many fussy details.” To add a more complex dimension to the spaces, Wagner brought in rich yet understated textures and patterns, and she used wood reclaimed from barns for shelving, window casings, ceilings and beams. Of course, getting those beams flush with the clean, high-gloss wainscoting took some finagling, says builder Andrew Patterson, adding, “To put those rustic wood beams next to that tongue-and-groove ceiling and get it super-crisp, we had to fill every single groove in with painter’s tape.” More rustic wood pops up in the master bedroom, where the material creates a stunning accent wall. “I always imagined having something herringbone in my house,” says the owner, whose trip to Famosa to look at surfaces proved inspiring. “The salesperson there told me, ‘You have to see this.’ ” The ‘this’ in question was weathered barnwood in tile-size shapes. “We were dying to use it somewhere,” Wagner says, “and realized it would be perfect in the bedroom wall.” Elsewhere, shiny dark gray tiles line the walls in the master bathroom, and much of the kitchen’s backsplash is composed of white-painted brick. The textures aren’t just a visual treat, though. In every space, the client wanted to make sure that everything felt as great as it looked.

“She would come into our office, and we’d put a bunch of rugs on the floor, and she would take her shoes off and walk on them,” Wagner says. In the end, coverings from patchwork cowhide to wool sisals to plush Moroccaninspired designs grace the floors. To achieve an easy, bohemian vibe, the owner and designer played with patterns. While browsing at Raoul Textiles showroom in Santa Barbara, for example, Wagner spotted a linen fabric in a distinctive West African print and snapped some photos. “I sent them to her, and we were sold,” she says. The fabric made it onto a pair of chairs in the living room, next to a leather-swathed sofa. For the bathroom floors, Wagner also opted for pattern, choosing a simple dark gray arabesque tile for a powder room, an aqua-and-white hexagonal look in the guest bath and hand-painted terra-cotta tiles in a bold charcoal-and-white diamond pattern for the master bathroom. To keep the bold mix of patterns from being too overpowering, Wagner primarily chose them in shades of blues and grays with the occasional infusion of rose hues and brass tones. Given her prime location, Wagner’s client plays host to plenty of friends and family, so it was essential that

the great room and kitchen spaces function together as a flexible entertaining space. In the kitchen, there’s a breakfast spot with a built-in coffee station, for example, and a mini-bar area with a wine fridge. For the dining space, Wagner and company designed an expansive banquette. “It maximizes the space, and it’s a little more casual,” the homeowner says. “I knew that I would have that style of dinner party, rather than a formal dinner party.” And if she and her guests want to sip cocktails while enjoying the ocean view, they can head up to the spacious rooftop deck, which is outfitted with comfortable seating and a hot tub. “Part of it’s open, and then you have this cozy protected side,” Brandon says. “So you can be out there and entertain or be a little more private.” Now settled by the beach, Wagner’s client couldn’t be happier. “It’s a tight-knit community,” she says. “There are great little mom-and-pop shops, everyone is so friendly, and you can walk everywhere.” But the pull of her new digs is equally as strong: “I’m a working professional, and I travel a lot, so I’m not home often,” she says. “But when I am, I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

range County has its share of magical wonderlands. Add Ryan Mennealy’s Lake Forest pottery studio to the mix. Surrounded by an arching eucalyptus grove that’s frequented by hummingbirds and other wildlife, it’s dotted with bits and pieces of rejected ceramics— the Land of Misfit Pots. “I need everything to make sense aesthetically and technically,” says the ceramicist. “That means at least a quarter of my work is discarded. I can’t tell you how many times ‘one more hole’ was one hole too many.” Mennealy’s signature perforated lighting and vessels, now found at Harbinger and through Bespoke Global, may look as if the openings are drilled randomly, yet each hole is part of a meticulously planned thread. In fact, select pieces are encrypted with poetic phrases—soul-mate or quiet-flame—in Morse code. “I’ve always been a fan of text in art,” he says. While artists like Ed Ruscha and Allen Ruppersberg have long inspired him, it was an encounter with a street poet in New York that prompted Mennealy to use pairs of words in his work. “It occurred to me that two words on one piece might be pleasing both visually and literally,” he explains. “They’re not a poem, but two words that work well together, either because of their hole patterns or the relationship between the words.” To say Mennealy’s path into ceramics was destined may be a stretch, but consider this: He was raised by “hippie artists,” and his father, a ceramics teacher, had a pottery wheel on the patio of the family home—now his own—in Orange County. Before committing full-time to the craft, though, Mennealy worked in film and television art departments, where he could be found rigging, repairing and sometimes fabricating lights. “Those years provided me with a crash course in interior design,” he says. “That’s how I garnered a deeper sense of balance and how the whole is created by a lot of little parts.” He returned to ceramics after leaving the entertainment business, eventually designing a small personal collection. It was then that designer and good friend Michele Trout, of Bonesteel Trout Hall, commissioned bowls and vases for a project and encouraged Mennealy’s first foray into ceramic lighting. When Mennealy started, he “drilled holes with no rhyme or reason” to test out the limits of clay. These days, each successful piece unfolds with the subtleties of patterns that come from deep within. “I love that I can refine an idea and then someone sees it and responds, ‘I get it…I’ve gotta have it,’ ” he says. “That connection with someone that I don’t even know is really amazing.”

ven after almost 100 years of development, Santa Barbara’s Hope Ranch retains much of the unspoiled beauty of its 19th-century sheep ranch origins. Occupying nearly 2,000 rolling acres perched picturesquely between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez mountain range, and crisscrossed with bridle paths, it still attracts residents who appreciate being close to nature. Which is why the renovation that designer James Magni spearheaded here quickly took on what he calls a “Wrightian attitude.” Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s buildings lived low on the land, Magni explains, because they “had a lot of horizontality to them. And we know he took inspiration from Asian architecture, which was about blurring the separation between inside and outside.” Blurring that separation for this house, however, wasn’t easy. The bicoastal empty-nester couple who purchased the property recognized the value of its 7 level acres with views of the ocean and mountains. But accessing those vistas from the 1960s house that already stood on-site was difficult because, remembers the wife, “It looked to me too much like Lincoln Center.” Much like the famed Manhattan arts complex, the residence was encased in a skeleton of decidedly unresidential precast concrete columns that bisected the panorama. Yet the new owners, lifelong Asian art and architecture aficionados, loved the home’s attractive Polynesian-style roof and, says the wife, “Because we are LUXESOURCE.COM / 261

New Yorkers who live in apartments, we like houses that ramble.” This house, fundamentally a series of connected pavilions, was blessed with rambling potential, particularly after the construction of a new master suite and an expanded great room containing areas for cooking, eating, reading and watching television. During a site visit, the couple’s architect, New Jerseybased Timothy P. Klesse, assured them the outer skeleton could be eliminated and the house opened up. Then Klesse returned to the East Coast to draw up plans. Simultaneously, the couple retained Magni and his partner, Jason Kalman, for the interior design and on-site management and design oversight of the renovation and additions. The program was challenging. “We had to temporarily support the house and run steel columns and girders to create the window walls,” remembers Klesse. The project’s builder, Brett Bronstad, elaborates: “There was a lot of shoring and buttressing to remove the columns. And we used 50 tons of steel to support the broad spans of glass.”

LA_LX34_Magnii_258-273.indd 267

Another detail that awakened the home’s nascent Eastern spirit was mahogany, a material commonly used in houses throughout Asia. Instead of cladding vertical elements with this luxurious wood, explains Kalman, the team applied it to interior and exterior ceilings and soffits, enhancing the roof’s Polynesian disposition and making it feel “as if it was floating above the glass.” This effect, particularly at night in the master bedroom addition, make the pavilions appear as large Japanese lanterns. “It’s a beautiful material that adds warmth,” observes Kalman. “But it’s also durable in this climate and has the wonderful smell of houses found in Japan.” Though Magni is often more associated with clean white modernism, here, he incorporated an earthier palette that was “more conceptually appropriate.” It also serves another purpose, adds Kalman: “We wanted to keep colorations warm and neutral to maintain the focus on the outdoors.” Magni also says that “low-tech” fabrics—wovens, silks, chenilles—“are more sensitive to an Asian attitude.” Magni and Kalman even incorporated wide strips of fabric from a

kimono the couple owned into the upholstered cushions that top a low wall separating the living room from the entry hall (thus converting the wall into extra seating). The Eastern influences, however, successfully sidestep clichés. The master bedroom, inspired by Kyoto teahouses, subtly evokes tatami with an upholstered headboard and a wool-silk blend carpet, both in rush tones of the traditional mats they reference. In other rooms, contemporary artworks (acquired with the help of Dallas-based art consultant Michael Thomas) and modern Magni Home Collection furnishings complement authentic Asian pieces that include Indian sculptures, contemporary Chinese calligraphy and a Chinese altar table doubling as a living room mantel. And at least one space—the downstairs media room and lounge— adopts a groovy, distinctly non-Asian, aesthetic that led the owners to humorously dub it the Pussycat Lounge after the former 1970s Manhattan go-go club.

LA_LX34_Magnii_258-273.indd 268

Outside, landscape designer Art Luna created a variety of easy-maintenance plantings for the expansive property. In the back, guiding the eye toward ocean views, “a flowering meadow softens the lines of the house, which is surrounded by blocky steps and planters,” he says. “It’s natural and organic as opposed to something that is very structured.” Around the pool, jasmine spills over the limestone walls and grasses that sway in the breeze above them, also relaxing the solid edges of the hardscaping. Freed from its concrete shell, the house today enjoys multiple vistas from most every room. Although Wright’s debt to Asian (specifically Japanese) architecture has been widely debated, the designers—and the house itself—gladly acknowledge theirs, even if, as with Wright’s work, the influences have been transformed into something wholly original.

RICHARD LANDRY AND THE ICAA ON CLASSICAL INTERPRETATIONS

Celebrated architect Richard Landry recently joined the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Southern California for the first lecture of its 2015 Lecture Series. The event took place at Landry’s stunning Los Angeles office, where the architect led an entertaining presentation on the interpretative process of blending classical architecture with the programmatic requirements of today’s lifestyle, as well as shared new projects from the Landry Design Group portfolio. Event sponsors included JD Group/Reside, Dugally Oberfeld and Shawn Nelson Builders, with Matt Construction and Millworks by Design serving as education sponsors.
