Five years into the new millennium, a small group of impassioned trailblazers set out to conquer design across the country. No easy feat for this band of outsiders. We plunged ourselves into design markets, from Texas and Chicago to Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Writer / Washington, D.C. If I had a spare $20,000… I would use the money for a down payment on a small beach cottage. Favorite Luxe interview? My conversation with Arizona- and Chicago-based designer Kim Scodro about her own house was a total treat. She was so genuine and funny, plus very knowledgeable about design. I could have talked to her for hours—I think I did! What is your biggest creative influence? Travel. Stepping away from what I see and do everyday opens my eyes and reawakens my senses in ways that are always meaningful and necessary. Most exciting thing happening in design today? I’m always motivated by people who have the courage to take risks in order to do or create something they believe in. Whatever it is they do, it’s usually done with such passion that it ends up making a lot of other people happy, too. Photographer / New York
What’s intriguing you now in the world of photography? The ergonomics of professional and consumer cameras coming out onto the market. I think that there needs to be more thought that goes into them beyond the science and technology, such as how they can be more thoughtfully designed tools that are functional, fluid and efficient. If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Buffalo, New York, in the summertime. It has incredible architecture from such amazing talents as Frank Lloyd Wright and Eliel Saarinen that I would love to shoot. I would also like to wander past all the old industrial buildings and dream up what I could turn them into. What type of architecture inspires you the most? There are so many fresh designers that are creating interesting architecture and interiors in Barcelona while still holding true to the history and authenticity of what makes the city what it is. It’s always a tough balance and they are doing a fine job at it.

If I could photograph anything… It would be the vanishing tribes of the world. What inspires you? I love midcentury modern, with a little wabi-sabi thrown in for its simplicity and use of natural objects and processes. Top three items on your design wish list: I would love to own a Serge Mouille lamp, a throw by Loro Piana or an Easy chair by Hans J. Wegner. Most memorable Luxe shoot? I really like working on the stories for the Radar section. The jewelry shoot I did last year turned out gorgeous!

Most memorable Luxe interviews? Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio, and New York artist Jenna SnyderPhillips, whose work I would love to hang in my powder room someday. Writer who has deeply influenced you? Helen Fielding. Her early columns in The Independent as fictional Bridget Jones were incredible; her single thirty-something diatribe is so profound and perfect that I still laugh out loud and agree, even as a smug married woman. What do you enjoy most about design? Nothing makes me happier than sitting in a hotel room by London-based Firmdale Hotels. Co-owner Kit Kemp’s mix of prints and textures, and the play of old and new, is completely inspiring. Someday, I hope to rehab a Chicago brownstone with all these compounding lyrical elements.

Architecture has always been the piece of the design puzzle that serves as the foundation for any next-level home and shapes how it is lived in. For many interior designers, working with a fashion brand is the ultimate feat—an opportunity to flex creative muscles not often sculpted in the shelter realm. But for interior designer Ryan Korban, fashion is where he first cut his design teeth. “In a sense, fashion was my first client,” he explains of his early days designing in retail. “It was my job to design around it yet not interrupt it.” The self-taught designer quickly turned industry heads with one übercool space after another and his modern-romantic aesthetic soon caught the eye of one famed fashion designer in particular: Alexander Wang. “It’s such an easy working relationship,” says Korban, who has become synonymous with Wang for their wildly successful collaborations over the past 10 years—from his many storefronts to his own home. “I think the best part of our collective work is that we both consistently strive for bigger and better in every project we undertake.” This commitment to greatness has resulted in a deeper understanding for Korban on the effects each industry has on the
other. “It’s always been important that I understand fashion in order to create interiors where fashion can thrive,” says the designer. “I think people are really starting to grasp the notion that a space can be put together in the same way an outfit is selected.” To that point, fashion houses are now looking to interiors, as “architecture and furniture silhouettes are proving to be huge influences for their brand,” expounds Korban. He further asserts, “designers whose aesthetics are based in minimalism—Jil Sander, Céline, Balenciaga—often turn to interior structures as a source of research.” And though runway collections appear to move at light speed in comparison to interior debuts, the fashion industry is largely dependent on the design world to support their lines. “These days you need to have a well-defined environment to act as an extension of the lifestyle you are selling,” states Korban. Suffice it to say, the synergy between fashion and interiors seems to be an ever-growing one that will continue to elevate each to the next level.

In her words: “My dream project would be to renovate the Topanga Ranch Motel. It is a cottage-style building built in the 1920s to house the road workers expanding the Pacific Coast Highway. It operated as a motel until the state bought it in 2001 and has been empty ever since. I would love to restore it into a 1930s/’40s California-style home, like a location from a Raymond Chandler novel.”

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Embracing all things outdoors, Brian Paquette’s aesthetic encompasses what the Pacific Northwest is all about: a sense of adventure. His designs utilize lots of layering, clean lines and a thoughtful use of organic color. In his words: “I am constantly inspired by the work of others in the industry, whether that be interior designers, furniture and lighting designers, textile makers, artists, ceramicists or photographers. I am only as good as the people I surround myself with and there is some really thoughtful and next-level work being done here in Seattle.”

In her words: “My biggest design complaint is when there are too many statement pieces crowded into one space; it starts to dilute the effect. It’s all about layering in the elements to speak to each other in a cohesive way so that the interiors maintain a sense of balance.”

RADAR / FUTURE OF DESIGN Stephen Burks, of Stephen Burks Man Made, in his new Brooklyn-based design studio. He’s currently working on collections for Dedon, Parachilna and Roche Bobois, as well as his brand’s participation in this year’s Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in China and The Armory Show in New York for 2016.
WORLD AFFAIRS
For decades, international design has almost exclusively referenced a European sensibility. But I’m interested in a more inclusive approach that considers other world cultures. In the early days of my career, I looked at travel as purely for inspiration. Once I began visiting the so-called more exotic regions of the world and creating with the people there, however, travel grew to be just as important an aspect of my designs as sketching. Going to places like Colombia, the Philippines and Senegal has become an inextricable part of my process and life. My work with various artisan groups started when I was sought out by nonprofits like Aid To Artisans and Artesanías de Colombia to be a design consultant. But as I started to understand

the role that commerce could play in benefitting these craftsmen, my manufacturing partners and I began to seek them out. I found my Senegalese basket-weaving artisans, for example, at a street fair in New York City’s West Village, and my long-term relationship with them has now included several collaborative trips to Africa to produce the Single and Triple Basket lamps and Material Composition 3 totem. This desire to return to handmade objects is becoming more widespread, and I believe that luxury in the 21st century will be defined by more appropriate expressions of authentic craftsmanship. However, as luxury brands move into new markets, they’re increasingly introduced to new interpretations of what that
means, and of technique and luxury itself. Authenticity shouldn’t be thought of as a marketing ingredient that can just be added to a production formula; it’s about being true to the culture of the product’s origin. But there are always clever ways to combine the hand with industry; in fact, it’s the coming together of industrial manufacturing and handmade craftsmanship, two seemingly disparate modes of production, that is inherently contemporary and innovative. And with this new partnership, the role of designer is shifting, as he or she is becoming a collaborator for change. The designer of the future will be at the center of every discussion of new ideas and social progress.

It is difficult to look at a final piece and know how someone has arrived there. The object will always possess phantoms of the process, but if a work is successful (like here) there is also something that has not entirely been revealed, something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Mark of Success: Balance achieved via imbalance. Memory: Ten years ago I was traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway and there was an incredibly beautiful woman that left behind an Art Deco hairpin similar to this fixture. I keep it with my drafting pencils. Play vs. Work: Playfulness is the forever mistress of all creative work.

Working with this dynamic interdisciplinary approach, she really hones the definition of what it means to create and to be a creative. There’s a reason why materials like silver and gold are such sought-after options in the worlds of fine jewelry and art: The metals are as practical as they are beautiful—their patented shimmer and shine as powerful a statement as their longevity. So, it makes sense that as the kitchen and bathroom become more and more like proper gems in the center of the homes they inhabit, that designers and architects alike would begin to implement a bit of similar material magic into their designs—a wonderfully sculptural knob in hand-cast bronze in the bath or a ribbon of brass inlaid into a complicated tile pattern on a backsplash. Here, we borrow the best of bling to celebrate kitchens and baths that are both high functioning and high fashion.

Los Angeles-based interior designer Caitlin Murray uses big doses of high-gloss brass and emerald to transform an entertainment-friendly kitchen into a moody, modern masterpiece that is huge on style. blacklacquerdesign.com Share your vision for this enviable space. The client is young and hip and works in tech, so my partner at the time, Caitlin McCarthy of Caitlin McCarthy Design, and I felt like there was a wonderful opportunity to do something fun and out there. When we found the color for the cabinets— Benjamin Moore’s Chrome Green—we knew we had exactly what we were looking for. It informed everything we did.
Favorite thing about this showstopping kitchen? I love the edgy black Marquina marble and the way that the material interacts with the other elements in the space, like the lacquered brass and the rich green of the cabinets. The resulting combination just reads as really luxurious and incredibly bold. Everything about this kitchen was designed to stand out, and that’s what it does.
Why did you opt for brass fixtures and hardware? We didn’t want to do anything that was expected, and I think using chrome or polished nickel would have been pretty, for sure, but more subtle than what we wanted to achieve. The lacquered brass, on the other hand, is super dramatic and reads so perfectly with the color story in the space that I’m not sure the kitchen would feel as balanced without it.

The bathtub is from Victoria + Albert; the chandelier is from 1stdibs. All of the hardware used throughout the space is from Waterworks, with the exception of the vintage seahorse hardware sourced from the Rose Bowl Flea Market.
Designers have been busy bringing gold and brass into the bath to pretty up what has, in the past, been purely practical, and these warm-toned materials are quickly giving tried-and-true chrome a run for its money. According to Tamara Kaye-Honey, the designer responsible for this pretty Southern California room, this change is only natural. “There’s a lovely patina that comes from working with materiels like unlacquered brass,” she says. “Plus, when paired with white, the palette is soothing while also feeling fresh and modern.” On the following page, interior talents from across the country share their favorite golden-hued spaces from their own design portfolios.

TURN IT UP Jill Goldberg, founder of Hudson Interior Designs in Boston, goes beyond the pale, literally, as she shares her fail-proof philosophy for designing with color. Do you have a go-to shade? There’s absolutely nothing better, in my opinion, than a vibrant, Hermès-y orange. It’s my favorite color, and I love to mix it in with lots of lovely greens and blues for maximum effect. Typically, my ideal palette is one that incorporates both a warm and a cool color. Best rooms for big color? Give me a small room, and I’ll give you big, bold pattern

and plenty of color. Tiny spaces mean you don’t have to go overboard and fill them with a lot of furniture that’s eventually going to compete with your palette, so they feel more balanced and exciting to me. Share your formula for a room with look-at-me color that doesn’t overwhelm. There’s no perfect equation, of course, but I always try to start with a singular pattern or fabric that brings all the colors I’m dreaming of together. Yellow can be a bit of a gamble in the design world; the notoriously difficult shade is tricky to work with thanks to its multitude of undesirable undertones. INSPIRATION For interior designer Angie Hranowsky, color is second nature. Here, the Charleston, South Carolina-based talent dishes on how to get it made in the shade (each and every one of them). Go big: The easiest way to transform a room and a space is to paint all of your walls a bold, bright shade. It gives you the biggest bang for your buck; plus, you can always paint over it if you change your mind later. Hang it up: One of my favorite methods to bring colorful interest into a home is to introduce beautiful artwork, like the bottle cap portrait by local artist Molly B. What’s on the color horizon for the coming year? Bold color and colored neutrals will definitely play a big role in 2016. We’re seeing people becoming more experimental as we move out of the recession, and they’re looking to make their homes feel brighter and more confident by using color. Favorite shade of the moment? It’s Farrow & Ball’s 70th anniversary next year, so there will be a lot of exciting launches to look forward to
that will mark the occasion. In terms of my favorite right now, though, it’s Stiffkey Blue (shown here). It’s regal and romantic, a real classic. Tricks for selecting the perfect paint color? I always think the most important thing is to choose a color you love! There’s no limit to how often and how much to use your ideal color once you’ve finally found it. So, when San Francisco designer Lauren Ranes and her client stumbled upon the dreamiest shade of citrus they’d ever seen, they didn’t hesitate to introduce it again and again into the family homestead. “The color, Benjamin Moore’s Ravishing Red, is tomato, persimmon and watermelon all rolled into one,” explains Ranes. “It’s a dignified and cheerful shade.” The result is a cohesive color scheme that relies on pattern and print throughout to make it appropriate for each space. One of color’s most prized properties is being able to bring a fresh, modern perspective to traditional spaces, like it does in this sweet foyer in North Carolina with inspiring architectural detail. Using a palette of soft green and subdued coral, designer Barrie Benson transformed the home’s 1950s bones into a graceful, feminine dream. “I wanted to give a nod to the old without making it feel like one’s grandmother lives here,” says Benson with a laugh. “The palette definitely sets the tone for that. ith spectacular views of Central Park, the location alone elevated a Manhattan apartment set in a 37-story building from the 1930s—with its Dorothy Draper-designed lobby intact— to exceptional status. The 2,000-square-foot home away from home for an executive and his family called for an urban, contemporary look with a bit of a masculine edge. “Our design sensibilities were very compatible,” says Alabama-based interior designer Tammy Connor, who first met her clients when she worked on their cottage in South Carolina followed by a more formal turn-of-the-century East Coast residence. “The goal was for it to be approachable and livable, casual enough to feel really comfortable, yet with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.” Described by Connor as “architecturally simplistic” upon purchase, the couple’s new city digs were devoid of such features as crown molding and millwork. So, the designer collaborated with architect James Carter to rectify

the situation. According to Carter, the existing sheetrock bookcases in the living room lacked personality, proper proportions and detail. “We worked together to create bookcases with more interest that contributed to the refined feel of the new décor,” says the architect, who also created the room’s paneling. “I suggested something along the lines of French Moderne for the paneling to give the background depth and elegance without interfering with the cleaner lines of the furniture.” After reconfiguring spaces and updating the kitchen and baths, the real game changer was opening a wall and a pair of narrow portals that previously closed off the living room from the spacious foyer. “The key was to enhance the views of the park as you enter the apartment,” says builder Vincent DiSalvo, who also raised the foyer ceiling by taking down and relocating existing ductwork, making it wider and flatter, and dropping a soffit around the perimeter. “The project took about six months, largely because of the logistics of working in a high-rise.”
The foyer’s walnut table by New Classics from Ainsworth-Noah in Atlanta is centered on the opening to the living area. Here it is possible to glimpse a chair topped with brilliant blue Prima Alpaca by Sandra Jordan in Healdsburg, California, and an early 19th-century Khotan rug. The antique lantern is from Lumiere. Paneling added to the jambs and new crown molding on the soffit create depth in the room-size space.

For the kitchen, the team made the most of its small footprint, removing a gas range on the diagonal and squaring up the wall. A dark navy lacquer on the cabinets—a sophisticated upgrade from the previous maple—informed the different shades of blue used throughout on the dining room ceiling, living room draperies, accent pillows, glass accessories and even book bindings. “This created a flow from one space to another,” says Connor. Because the owners are both very tailored, they wanted furnishings and finishes that were timeless, mindful of that masculine edge and a little chic, without being over the top. “There are no florals on the upholstery,” Connor says about the fabrics that include wool-sateen, mohair and linenvelvet. “There’s a strength to the color palette, and eclectic materials such as onyx, bronze, glass and leather provide perfect accents.” Although the homeowners love antiques, Connor says the pieces selected are less about style and more about clean lines and their ability to meld with the modern artwork. “An antique can be contemporary if it’s quiet and has refined lines and proportions,” she adds.

Modern art and a mix of materials and styles create a yin-yang tension in the foyer, where the designer teamed a Louis Philippe-style chest and vintage Murano glass lamps alongside Picasso drawings and an antique French settee, all grounded with an overscale-grid hide rug. Centered between the living room’s new painted bookcases and a bold Abstract Expressionist painting, a custom-built charcoal shagreen cabinet includes a pop-up mechanism for a flat-screen TV. Skirted Madeline Stuart sofas and a John Saladino club chair, ottoman and bench provide seating with a modern vibe around an onyx coffee table. Just opposite, dining room cabinetry balances the focal wall of the living room with similar detailing. A raised ceiling in the apartment beneath resulted in a step-up to the dining

space, where curved railings were added to mitigate the platform effect and make the room more intimate. A skirted banquette in taupe velvet adds flexibility to the seating. “You can seat seven comfortably and you can push the table back to create more space,” says the designer. The master bedroom taps into the park’s winter palette with a charcoal silk-and-grass-cloth wallcovering as a textural envelope complemented with gold-thread linen-hemp draperies. Like the rest of the interiors, the master suite is not overly decorated. “It’s not all about pomp and circumstance or show,” says Connor. “Everything is rooted in traditional but simplified and layered with clean lines.” And though the view is what beckons, it is that rich balance of mixing materials and styles that really creates a place to call home.

ith its sinuous architecture and bright white stucco exterior popping against an endless backdrop of sea and sky, a family’s vacation home feels more like a resort in Santorini than the Florida getaway spot that it is. “I saw the architecture and said, ‘Wow!’ ” remembers the homeowner, who retreats here from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with her husband and their two children. “It feels like you’re in Greece or some other exotic locale.” For longtime friend and architect Jeffrey Dungan, the 1,640-square-foot lot and beautiful seaside-town setting of Alys Beach presented an exciting building opportunity. “It’s a very specific piece of property,” says Dungan, who worked with general superintendent John Spears to bring his vision to fruition. “Because of its footprint, we had to build up. So I decided to have a tower as a focal point. I call it a crown.” Designing in white stucco to meld with the community’s aesthetic, plus having to meet hurricane standards and town codes, challenged Dungan to create something unique. “I wanted to do a really elegant, simple structure,” he says, “stacking windows on top of one another.” And, of course, include balconies at every opportunity to take advantage of views and ocean breezes. “The architecture is clean and modern,” says Dungan, who drew from Moorish motifs for the parapet walls and arched doorframes, “but I also wanted it to be visually warm. So there are touches like reclaimed oak beams and flooring from cotton gins that date back to the 1800s,” all in weathered finishes that complement silky Venetian plaster walls. Exquisite diamond-patterned ceiling detailing and mullions on windows also lend a traditional reference that grounds the style. To connect the house to its private plunge pool, the architect used a zaguan design common in Central America. “It’s where you open a door into a covered porch-like courtyard,” Dungan says. “The reason is to protect you from the heat. The house wraps around terraces and a courtyard to keep the sun at bay, so you can be outdoors and still be in the shade temperature about 10 degrees cooler.” The 4-foot-deep pool nestles into a grotto, whose back wall is lined with colorful Moroccan tiles in a range of beach-inspired hues. Pavers, which also find their way into the foyer, are made of concrete in an earthy blend of white and sand tones. Inside, the open-plan living area is about 15 feet up, on the second level. The living room is compact, to allow space for a lounge and outdoor grill area for the husband. To keep with

the intimate feel, designer Ashley Garrison, also a family friend, recommended four comfy chairs upholstered in a tan-and-cream fabric woven “like a giant needlepoint,” she says. “You sit in these chairs and never want to sit in another again.” Though windows make up most of the wall space, a painting by Jamali claimed its spot on one wall and inspired the teal and orange accents throughout. “It takes your breath away that everything around here is all white, white, white,” says Garrison. “But this was a good way to add color and make the house personal to the owners.” Personality and fun were key words throughout. “We wanted everything in the house to be inviting,” says the wife, “and for all of our guests to feel at home.” A major focal point is the living room’s slightly curved staircase, which unfolds artistically and is stepped out from the wall. Dungan ensured that the architectural treads create a marvelous shadow effect, accentuated with ultra-thin LEDs framed in stainless steel. In the kitchen, Dungan kept the cabinetry light, with horizontal driftwood planks against white Carrara marble. In addition, he ran the same boards on the ceiling, and the 7-inch-wide plank flooring was also stained to blend right in. “The wife took pictures of things she liked, and then she would bring them to us and say, ‘I want that to look like this,’ and we had to figure out how to create whatever she had seen,” remembers Spears, who helmed the build with Scott Barnes (the firm’s vice president of residential construction at the time). “For example, we used a treatment that was new to us for the millwork, sandblasting the wood before it was installed and adding a specialty finish to create an aged appearance.” Garrison, too, incorporated textures, such as the shimmery, almost iridescent turquoise fabric on the barstools at the island. The layout is galley-style but it lives much larger because it’s so open. More intimate is the adjacent breakfast area, a cozy nook with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a porthole-like window. A built-in banquette and chairs seat six for intimate gatherings. Texture also plays out in a bathroom with a diamondpatterned window and walls that are clad in a pebbly aggregate, an earthy contrast to more slick surfaces. But the spacious master sitting area is softer and more casual; comfortably furnished with an upholstered sofa and chairs, it’s the homeowners’ favorite spot to unwind. Not surprisingly, the most dramatic space is the fourth-level lighthouse-like tower, a combination of a grand outdoor terrace and enclosed glass lounge area, about the size of a small bedroom. On each side, the parapet wall features an oval opening with customdesigned shutters. “It’s amazing,” says Dungan. He designed an exterior stairway that leads to the tower, “and when you walk up, step onto the landing and turn, you’re suddenly staring at the ocean. It’s really impactful.” Inside are a pair of chaises and a fireplace to warm on chilly nights. “I hadn’t really thought about what my ideal beach house would be, but I absolutely love the home and the water views,” says the wife. “The ocean is powerful and peaceful at the same time.” But while she appreciates the awe of it all, being here is about family. “We love being here with our children and their friends,” she says. “We are making a lifetime of memories at this home.”

The kitchen ceiling was lowered and clad with the same white oak as the cabinetry, which was fabricated by Wooden Originals. A cooktop and ovens from GM Appliance are built into the island countertop fabricated by Granite Plus. The white fluted-porcelain farmhouse sink is from The Fixture Exchange; casement windows by Loewen take advantage of ocean breezes and lots of natural light.

At its peak, the building rises to 49 feet. The south face draws plenty of sunlight, which streams into a two-story stack of windows. Beyond the kitchen windows at left is an outdoor kitchen, and a Juliet balcony was designed to enjoy the community green. The horizontal bank of windows on the third level was inspired by architecture seen during a trip to Barcelona.

os Angeles can be visually challenging at times,” says Nathan Hunt, “but I feel you just have to scratch beneath the surface.” And if there’s one thing at which Hunt excels, it’s going beneath the surface. The creative force behind Hunt Studios, Hunt recently moved his primary base to L.A. from San Francisco, and, along with his team of artists, specializes in architectural sculpture, be it stone or cast materials, of a caliber now rarely seen. Case in point: When a TV production company needed a full-scale replica of a Nabataean tomb from the lost city of Petra recreated for a Nova documentary, they called Hunt. But a modern man can’t build an empire on ancient ruins alone. As such, Hunt’s practice also encompasses restoration, conservation and design services, as well as installation work and handmade tile fabrication. “I started carving tiles several years ago because I wanted to work with designers and architects to bring sculpture into residential interiors,” he explains. At the same time, he can often be found in his studio executing his own sculptures and furniture. The common link among Hunt’s projects is his deep regard for history. Even when creating the elegantly minimal Touchstone tiles, made in collaboration with Deborah Osburn of Clé, Hunt looks to the masters, citing Noguchi and Henry Moore as inspirations. And when making something unabashedly traditional—say an Art Nouveau-style fireplace featuring meticulously rendered sunflowers—his classical training shines through: Hunt learned his craft as an apprentice on such sites as London’s Westminster Abbey. Whether he’s working on a public project or a personal piece, Hunt’s calling is not one that lends itself to quick results. “Sometimes with a sculpture, you get to a place where you can’t see a good finish. You just have to forge ahead until you see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he says. “But the ability to make something from relatively nothing keeps me going.”

fter living in a traditional Tudor-style residence, a retired Seattle businessman was ready for another approach. “I wanted a home that was different and reflected a new phase of my life,” he says. So, he turned to designer Jules Thomas to fashion this next phase. “I saw this spark in him—a Southerner’s ease mixed with corporate toughness—and decided to push the envelope,” she explains. “He trusted me to move forward with a design that was new to him.” Looking beyond the dated oak cabinetry, pink marble and Sheetrock railings, Thomas “envisioned a masculine home with a soft edge,” she says. “I wanted to bring a freshness to the combination but with a sense of history as well.” The new spaces would conjure a 1930s Parisian gentlemen’s smoking club—mixing the relaxed sophistication of the Ritz Paris’ Bar Hemingway with a vibe that evokes the effortless ease of actor Jack Nicholson. Getting that Paris-in-Seattle feel required an extensive undertaking on the part of both Thomas, who worked with Alev Seymen, a former project manager at Castanes Architects, for the drawings, and builder Klaus Toth. For Toth’s part, he ensured that every detail—from the living room’s dramatic custom fireplace to a tailored staircase railing near the entry—was installed with the utmost care. “The quality of the finishes was essential to this project,” says Toth, who worked on the home with superintendent Chris Nason. In the combined living-dining room, for instance, the sterling-silver-leaf ceiling, which now perfectly aligns with black plaster walls, was a challenge that required careful engineering. “There are points of connection where different materials come together,” Toth says. For example, high-gloss wood-panel walls, black hardwood floors, mirrored walls with glass moldings, Italian plaster surfaces, white veined marble, and full-height tile and stone wall finishes all make an appearance in the home. “A lot of thought was spent on those unions:

what the material choices would be and how they’d play together,” he says. “Jules also wanted to celebrate the light and how it reflects off these different finishes.” For the color palette, Thomas chose a black backdrop punctuated by metallics and white. “I thought it would be elegant yet understated, like Seattle, to play the gray light off a black palette in a variety of finishes from muted steel and mohair to lacquered walls,” she says. “I let the light in the spaces dominate over the idea of a color scheme. It’s really the absence of color in favor of enhancing the natural light.” To capture the natural brightness and to better match the scale of the house, the designer raised the doors and ceilings—those doors and windows will frame the gardens that are currently being designed
by landscape architect Kenneth Philp. Thomas then considered the custom staircase, which features a bronze railing and blackened-steel posts. The black hue of the plaster walls became a beautiful canvas for an extensive art collection that includes Peter Waite’s large acrylic on panels that hangs in the dining room. “My client picked pieces he really loved,” says Thomas, who helped the homeowner curate the various works. The graphic yet luminous palette well serves the luxurious surfaces. “Each finish or surface in this home was part of a layer cake,” Toth says. “There were so many materials to consider and finishes laid on top of each other that create a unified look.” Those layered elements that Thomas chose include the dining room’s black plaster

walls, which bestow a traditional but fresh patina; the entry hall’s custom paneling that plays off the livingdining room ceiling; metalwork including doorknobs, floor grates and the master bathroom’s console legs; and the living room’s hand-cast glass mirror wall. “It all comes together and is beautifully strong but soft at the same time,” Thomas says. In the living room, a brass coffee table and sinewy leather armchairs rest on a custom silk-and-cashmere rug, and the dining room’s cozy tufted banquette effortlessly pairs with bespoke cabinets and two tables for dining flexibility. “Every detail plays off each other seamlessly,” she says. Meticulous details can also be found in the kitchen, where custom lacquered cabinets with inlaid bronze-and-nickel trim balance the creamy marble countertops etched with a linear motif. “There’s so much depth to this project and blending of finishes that’s very cool,” Toth says. The renovated abode now reflects Thomas’ client perfectly. “A house has to really belong to its homeowner in every way, like a custom-tailored suit,” she says. And the personality of the owner is truly displayed in each area of his house. “If you want a home that’s a personal reflection, a designer with a critical eye is key,” he says. “I love how the dark walls and floors add warmth to the house and reflect light. The finished product is absolutely magnificent.”
