Five years into the new millennium, a small group of impassioned trailblazers set out to conquer design across the country. No easy feat for this band of outsiders. Over the last 10 years, Luxe Interiors + Design has recognized some of the best in design through an array of events—and this season was no exception. First, we attended What’s New, What’s Next at the New York Design Center and partnered with the New York International Carpet Show to showcase the latest in handknotted rugs. In October, the ASID New York Metro chapter inducted its new board at the Grohe Live! Center, followed by its first meeting at Lazzoni’s Chelsea showroom. We also joined Flexform for the opening of its redesigned showroom, as well as Fabricut’s Designer Dine-In at the D&D Building. In Connecticut, the design scene was equally as vibrant, as Wheelock celebrated its newly renovated design studio in Old Greenwich and Clarke Kitchen and Design held its Designer Appreciation event. Writer / Washington, D.C. If I had a spare $20,000… I would use the money for a down payment on a small beach cottage. Favorite Luxe interview? My conversation with Arizona- and Chicago-based designer Kim Scodro about her own house was a total treat. She was so genuine and funny, plus very knowledgeable about design. I could have talked to her for hours—I think I did! What is your biggest creative influence? Travel. Stepping away from what I see and do everyday opens my eyes and reawakens my senses in ways that are always meaningful and necessary. Most exciting thing happening in design today? I’m always motivated by people who have the courage to take risks in order to do or create something they believe in. Whatever it is they do, it’s usually done with such passion that it ends up making a lot of other people happy, too. Photographer / New York
What’s intriguing you now in the world of photography? The ergonomics of professional and consumer cameras coming out onto the market. I think that there needs to be more thought that goes into them beyond the science and technology, such as how they can be more thoughtfully designed tools that are functional, fluid and efficient. If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Buffalo, New York, in the summertime. It has incredible architecture from such amazing talents as Frank Lloyd Wright and Eliel Saarinen that I would love to shoot. I would also like to wander past all the old industrial buildings and dream up what I could turn them into. What type of architecture inspires you the most? There are so many fresh designers that are creating interesting architecture and interiors in Barcelona while still holding true to the history and authenticity of what makes the city what it is. It’s always a tough balance and they are doing a fine job at it.

If I could photograph anything… It would be the vanishing tribes of the world. What inspires you? I love midcentury modern, with a little wabi-sabi thrown in for its simplicity and use of natural objects and processes. Top three items on your design wish list: I would love to own a Serge Mouille lamp, a throw by Loro Piana or an Easy chair by Hans J. Wegner. Most memorable Luxe shoot? I really like working on the stories for the Radar section. The jewelry shoot I did last year turned out gorgeous!

Most memorable Luxe interviews? Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio, and New York artist Jenna SnyderPhillips, whose work I would love to hang in my powder room someday. Writer who has deeply influenced you? Helen Fielding. Her early columns in The Independent as fictional Bridget Jones were incredible; her single thirty-something diatribe is so profound and perfect that I still laugh out loud and agree, even as a smug married woman. What do you enjoy most about design? Nothing makes me happier than sitting in a hotel room by London-based Firmdale Hotels. Co-owner Kit Kemp’s mix of prints and textures, and the play of old and new, is completely inspiring. Someday, I hope to rehab a Chicago brownstone with all these compounding lyrical elements.

HONEST ARCHITECTURE MATERIAL PALETTES
Architecture has always been the piece of the design puzzle that serves as the foundation for any next-level home and shapes how it is lived in. Contemporary elements (think glass and steel) have long been go-to mediums in the construction world for sleek façades, but honest, stripped-down materials—concrete, salvaged wood, rammed earth—are the new heroes of high-end residential architecture.

For many interior designers, working with a fashion brand is the ultimate feat—an opportunity to flex creative muscles not often sculpted in the shelter realm. But for interior designer Ryan Korban, fashion is where he first cut his design teeth. “In a sense, fashion was my first client,” he explains of his early days designing in retail. “It was my job to design around it yet not interrupt it.” The self-taught designer quickly turned industry heads with one übercool space after another and his modern-romantic aesthetic soon caught the eye of one famed fashion designer in particular: Alexander Wang. “It’s such an easy working relationship,” says Korban, who has become synonymous with Wang for their wildly successful collaborations over the past 10 years—from his many storefronts to his own home. “I think the best part of our collective work is that we both consistently strive for bigger and better in every project we undertake.” This commitment to greatness has resulted in a deeper understanding for Korban on the effects each industry has on the
other. “It’s always been important that I understand fashion in order to create interiors where fashion can thrive,” says the designer. “I think people are really starting to grasp the notion that a space can be put together in the same way an outfit is selected.” To that point, fashion houses are now looking to interiors, as “architecture and furniture silhouettes are proving to be huge influences for their brand,” expounds Korban. He further asserts, “designers whose aesthetics are based in minimalism—Jil Sander, Céline, Balenciaga—often turn to interior structures as a source of research.” And though runway collections appear to move at light speed in comparison to interior debuts, the fashion industry is largely dependent on the design world to support their lines. “These days you need to have a well-defined environment to act as an extension of the lifestyle you are selling,” states Korban. Suffice it to say, the synergy between fashion and interiors seems to be an ever-growing one that will continue to elevate each to the next level.

In her words: “My dream project would be to renovate the Topanga Ranch Motel. It is a cottage-style building built in the 1920s to house the road workers expanding the Pacific Coast Highway. It operated as a motel until the state bought it in 2001 and has been empty ever since. I would love to restore it into a 1930s/’40s California-style home, like a location from a Raymond Chandler novel.”

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Embracing all things outdoors, Brian Paquette’s aesthetic encompasses what the Pacific Northwest is all about: a sense of adventure. In his words: “I am constantly inspired by the work of others in the industry, whether that be interior designers, furniture and lighting designers, textile makers, artists, ceramicists or photographers. I am only as good as the people I surround myself with and there is some really thoughtful and next-level work being done here in Seattle.”

WHY WE LOVE HIM: One to take risks, Caleb Anderson’s creations

I would curate the rooms with antiques and modern elements and create a magnificent garden. I am fascinated not just for these homes’ architectural characteristics, but also for the intrigue of their history.”

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Andrew Brown creates spaces that have history and that feel well-traveled and collected with texture and depth. With a lean toward clean lines in a classic, high-contrast color palette, expect a seamless interweaving of styles and eras in his designs—old and new, masculine and feminine, simple and ornate. In his words: “I’m very curious by nature and am always intrigued by the history behind things. I travel a lot, which keeps my eyes open to new possibilities. In design, I try to look at everything in a different way—my mind is always thinking in terms of how to reinterpret the objects that I see that inspire me.”

RADAR / FUTURE OF DESIGN Stephen Burks, of Stephen Burks Man Made, in his new Brooklyn-based design studio. He’s currently working on collections for Dedon, Parachilna and Roche Bobois, as well as his brand’s participation in this year’s Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in China and The Armory Show in New York for 2016.
WORLD AFFAIRS
For decades, international design has almost exclusively referenced a European sensibility. But I’m interested in a more inclusive approach that considers other world cultures. In the early days of my career, I looked at travel as purely for inspiration. Once I began visiting the so-called more exotic regions of the world and creating with the people there, however, travel grew to be just as important an aspect of my designs as sketching. Going to places like Colombia, the Philippines and Senegal has become an inextricable part of my process and life. My work with various artisan groups started when I was sought out by nonprofits like Aid To Artisans and Artesanías de Colombia to be a design consultant. But as I started to understand

the role that commerce could play in benefitting these craftsmen, my manufacturing partners and I began to seek them out. I found my Senegalese basket-weaving artisans, for example, at a street fair in New York City’s West Village, and my long-term relationship with them has now included several collaborative trips to Africa to produce the Single and Triple Basket lamps and Material Composition 3 totem. This desire to return to handmade objects is becoming more widespread, and I believe that luxury in the 21st century will be defined by more appropriate expressions of authentic craftsmanship. However, as luxury brands move into new markets, they’re increasingly introduced to new interpretations of what that
means, and of technique and luxury itself. Authenticity shouldn’t be thought of as a marketing ingredient that can just be added to a production formula; it’s about being true to the culture of the product’s origin. But there are always clever ways to combine the hand with industry; in fact, it’s the coming together of industrial manufacturing and handmade craftsmanship, two seemingly disparate modes of production, that is inherently contemporary and innovative. And with this new partnership, the role of designer is shifting, as he or she is becoming a collaborator for change. The designer of the future will be at the center of every discussion of new ideas and social progress.

Three towers, Tetris-shaped with a gleaming, glass-front exterior: This is what will soon be the tallest residential building in the state of New Jersey. It’s said that the peaks of the skyscrapers will be visible from New York City across the water. The project, named Journal Squared, after the neighborhood it resides in, was designed by Manhattan-based Hollwich Kushner (HWKN) and Handel Architects and will boast more than 2.3 million square feet of mixed-use space upon completion. The design borrows from the architecture of the existing neighborhood, ensuring that the new structure will fi t in seamlessly with the surrounding buildings while presenting a commanding—and hopefully one day iconic—presence in the skyline. ON DISPLAY WENDELL CASTLE REMASTERED
Now through February 2016, the Museum of Arts and Design is exhibiting one of the industry’s greats—known to his followers as the “Father of the Art Furniture Movement.” For the first time, designer Wendell Castle is showcasing his digitally crafted works—from some of his earliest pieces in the 1960s to his newest collection that was crafted by drawing inspiration from his first decade of work, reshaping old favorites with a contemporary leaning. Here, he speaks about one of his favorite pieces in the exhibit and shares the story behind it. madmuseum.org “In the 1960s, I made a table with a big hole in the middle with the idea that the most interesting things were going on underneath it. It was the first time I had done that; though, I’ve done it quite a few more times since. This table was where my daughter, Alison, had her first birthday party. I ended up selling it to some friends who kept it for quite a few years. They eventually put it up for auction, and I bought it back…at a premium. I sold it for around $2,000 and ended up paying $18,000 later on. That was more than 15 years ago; now, I couldn’t touch it.”
Why a jewelry collection? Rueda: We recently opened our first retail store in Tribeca and jewelry presented an opportunity to expand our vision. Uhuru’s founders have always talked about developing a jewelry line, and we were finally able to bring in someone with the expertise and craftsmanship necessary to produce one. That person is Borah Betts.
Describe your vision. Rueda: Our jewelry pieces speak to Uhuru’s larger philosophy: to practice design that harmonizes with the elementary materials that shape the natural world— wood, metal and stone. This practice extends to the use of sustainable sourcing and craft in an eff ort to promote environmental stewardship in design and fashion.
What made jewelry a natural progression? Betts: There’s a reason why furniture and jewelry are some of the most sought-after vintage products. They take on the character and the identity of the owner, and they are imbued with not only the spirit of the maker but the owner, as well.
How has Brooklyn affected your work? Betts: There is such an unbelievably expansive creative community here that I really, truly believe does not exist elsewhere. Having all these incredible people doing extraordinary things everywhere you turn is so inspiring and humbling.
What materials do you use? Betts: The collection is heavily inspired by the surroundings at our Red Hook studio. Everything is just a little eroded here in the most incredible way, and I wanted to capture that feeling by using materials that are traditionally perceived as being tough.
Local haunts? Rueda: Pioneer Works in Red Hook is one of my absolute personal favorites. Unlike the white cube of a traditional gallery space, it has a very approachable design that allows for not only fantastic exhibitions but for active community engagement.

The Brooklyn-based furniture brand started by Bill Hilgendorf and Jason Horvath and known for using reclaimed materials is staying true to its aesthetic with the launch of its new jewelry collection ( featuring three lines called Shards, Boulder and Runes). Utilizing wood chips from the workroom floor and rocks from the Brooklyn waterfront, the pieces are then crafted by hand in Red Hook and finished with precious metals and stones—dipped in gold and laced with black diamonds. We got the inside scoop from the collection’s design duo, MC Rueda and Borah Betts, above, as they discuss how furniture and jewelry interconnect and how their home city influences their brand. uhurudesign.com

In the luxury wallcovering business, Fairfield, New Jersey-based Phillip Jeffries is keeping it all in the family. The Bershad brothers are carrying on the company their father, Eric Bershad, launched in 1976. WHY: The duo started TRNK to offer new depictions of modern-male living, and the same goes for their Instagram. Drawn to clean lines and natural materials that weather and age well, their goal is to create environments that feel modern yet still lived-in and approachable. IN THEIR WORDS: “We really love Hasami Porcelain. It combines clean, contemporary forms with heirloom techniques and earthy materials. Another favorite is Workstead; we’re drawn to contemporary design that borrows elements from yesteryear, but without being directly referential.”

LUXURY IS… Authentic and experiential. The more I speak to top designers, they tell me they are looking for textiles, crafts and art that are unique and special—not something that can be bought on every corner.
DESIGN MANTRA: At Phillip Jeff ries, we have a slogan called “otaku,” which is a Japanese word we learned from our artisanal mills. There’s no direct translation, but the closest description is a mix of passion, love and near obsession with your craft, and an immense sense of pride in what you’ve created.

OFF THE SHELF: Fire by glass artist Dale Chihuly—he’s an incredible artisan who creates his pieces with spectacular colors, shapes and textures. He signed his book for my kids, and I hope they treasure it as much as I do. DREAM JOB: I’d love to switch jobs with Richard Branson. The fi rst time I upgraded on a Virgin Atlantic fl ight over 10 years ago, it changed my perspective on what luxury could mean in the airline industry—smoothies instead of coff ee at the airline club and Molton Brown products in the bathroom. His success has helped inspire me to bring a new level of luxury to our own industry.

HAVING A MOMENT: Natural materials, like a braided water hyacinth, mixed with more refi ned materials such as silks and beautiful linens. UP NEXT: We’re buying hand-woven materials—silk and abaca—from artisans in impoverished regions. It provides the communities with work while continuing the legacy of their craft. We’re spearheading an eff ort to increase our sourcing and thus use our company to support these developing countries.
ROCHE BOBOIS There’s no denying Sacha Lakic’s design roots: The sexy curves and daredevil lines of the Paris-based talent’s furniture speak to his aesthetic sensibilities as loudly as the idling of the engines of the Yamaha-powered motorcycles he used to design. And his most recent collaboration with Italian furniture giant Roche Bobois is more of the same—as illustrated by the Aircell fauteuils below—with the edgy silhouettes of chairs and sofas that would look equally as comfortable with a cashmere throw or a leather jacket draped over their arms. roche-bobois.com

ANALISSE TAFT-GERSTEN, ALT FOR LIVING In the back of a charming coffee bar—A Little Taste—in the heart of New York’s Flower District, Analisse Taft-Gersten’s design showroom, ALT for Living, is uniquely Parisian. It’s fitting, since the inspiration for her part-shopping, part-dining business came when she was sitting in a dual café-boutique in Paris. The space, which she designed with the help of architect John Ike, is true to its original structure with a pressed-tin ceiling, beautifully worn throughout the years, and open-face shelving that was recycled from the original shop. On display is an expertly curated collection of fabric and carpet samples, home furnishings and accessories. Taft-Gersten has perfected the Parisian mystique in her successful showroom, but she finds that there are plenty of places to peek at the influence of the French right here in the city. Explore her ideal day spent seeking out The City of Light in The Big Apple. altforliving.com 9 a.m. Meet me in SoHo at the bar in Balthazar and order a latte bowl. This place is an institution and a great way to start the day, caffeinated. Afterward, let’s stroll the streets of SoHo and window shop. Within walking distance is Wyeth, a showroom that, for me, is what heaven must look like—the highest of high-end, the untouchable, the remarkable. Clic Bookstore and Gallery is also so fun—it has the best selection of coffee table books and accessories. 10 a.m. It’s time to eat! I’ll let you pick between two of my favorites. Buvette on Grove Street is identical to sitting in a sweet, little café in Paris. The croque madame or the poached eggs over scafata and pecorino are my go-to orders. Or we can head to a little NoLIta gem, Café Gitane. I’ll get the avocado toast and a fresh orange juice, you should go for the baked eggs with salmon, capers, potatoes and cream. Also get a double macchiato to go—the first store on our hit list opens soon. 11 a.m. Just down the street from Café Gitane is Atelier Courbet. This little shop is like taking a step back in time, with lots of nods back to its former life as the 16th-century Brewer Carriage House. You can get lost in its many collectibles from craftsmen and artists all around the world. I am personally saving my pennies for the Jean Puiforcat sphere coffee set.
12:30 p.m. The train will take us to Union Square on 14th Street, and from there we’ll walk over to ABC Carpet & Home. We’ll eat lunch at ABC Kitchen, but fi rst let’s head down to the lower level to see my new obsession, abcmkt. This is the best place to fi nd loads of chic kitchen accessories and tabletop items. 1:30 p.m. Now to ABC Kitchen. Table for two reserved for Taft-Gersten, right this way! I’m loving the little tea cups and saucers; I think I’ll buy them after! I love that you can purchase the tableware. I highly recommend anything here, but the pizzas are exceptional. Let’s not order coffee, though; I have a plan for that. Check please! 3 p.m. Before we get too far, I want to swing by my favorite antiques shop just a few blocks away. Mantiques Modern on 22nd Street carries phenomenal vintage accessories and mirrors, and is an excellent source for art and gifts. There is a vintage Hermès ashtray I have my eye on, and I know that they frequently get in new inventory. 3:30 p.m. Next up is Apparatus Studio on 26th Street. I’ve made an appointment to stop in and say hello to the owners, Gabriel Hendifar and Jeremy Anderson. These two are the tastemakers for custom lighting. A visit is a must because you get to see where they make the pieces in their studio.

4:30 p.m. Since we’re in the area, we’re stopping by my favorite coffee shop, A Little Taste. As you can imagine, having a coffee bar steps away from my desk has turned me into a bit of a snob. Our roaster, and partner, Greg Heinz can give us a quick class on how to steam the perfect hot milk or make cold brew ice cubes if we ask. Maybe indulge with a macaroon, too? 5 p.m. Next up is the Sam Still Gallery. The four-story walkup where he shows his art is gorgeous, and he treats you like family. He is one of my favorite local artists; he burnishes black ink on bark paper in big abstract shapes and sizes. It’s the perfect conversation piece for a dining room or over a fi replace. It’s almost time for a cocktail, but fi rst, let’s peek in at Remains Lighting and see if owner David Calligeros is there to show us around his showroom. I love the lamps he carries by Alan Wanzenberg. 6 p.m. One of my favorite dinner spots is within walking distance from my showroom: The Clocktower at the New York Edition hotel. This newly designed restaurant and hotel, by Ian Schrager, is a must-see in the city as it’s one of the many famous architectural institutions that pepper our streets. Then let’s go to La Pecora Bianca. The pistachio-painted chairs and oversize white pendants here are so cute. It’s just a little slice of Europe to end the day.

Memory: Ten years ago I was traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway and there was an incredibly beautiful woman that left behind an Art Deco hairpin similar to this fixture. There’s a reason why materials like silver and gold are such sought-after options in the worlds of fine jewelry and art: The metals are as practical as they are beautiful—their patented shimmer and shine as powerful a statement as their longevity. So, it makes sense that as the kitchen and bathroom become more and more like proper gems in the center of the homes they inhabit, that designers and architects alike would begin to implement a bit of similar material magic into their designs—a wonderfully sculptural knob in hand-cast bronze in the bath or a ribbon of brass inlaid into a complicated tile pattern on a backsplash. Here, we borrow the best of bling to celebrate kitchens and baths that are both high functioning and high fashion.

Los Angeles-based interior designer Caitlin Murray uses big doses of high-gloss brass and emerald to transform an entertainment-friendly kitchen into a moody, modern masterpiece that is huge on style. blacklacquerdesign.com Share your vision for this enviable space. The client is young and hip and works in tech, so my partner at the time, Caitlin McCarthy of Caitlin McCarthy Design, and I felt like there was a wonderful opportunity to do something fun and out there. When we found the color for the cabinets— Benjamin Moore’s Chrome Green—we knew we had exactly what we were looking for. It informed everything we did.
Favorite thing about this showstopping kitchen? I love the edgy black Marquina marble and the way that the material interacts with the other elements in the space, like the lacquered brass and the rich green of the cabinets. The resulting combination just reads as really luxurious and incredibly bold. Everything about this kitchen was designed to stand out, and that’s what it does.
Why did you opt for brass fixtures and hardware? We didn’t want to do anything that was expected, and I think using chrome or polished nickel would have been pretty, for sure, but more subtle than what we wanted to achieve. The lacquered brass, on the other hand, is super dramatic and reads so perfectly with the color story in the space that I’m not sure the kitchen would feel as balanced without it.

The bathtub is from Victoria + Albert; the chandelier is from 1stdibs. All of the hardware used throughout the space is from Waterworks, with the exception of the vintage seahorse hardware sourced from the Rose Bowl Flea Market.
Designers have been busy bringing gold and brass into the bath to pretty up what has, in the past, been purely practical, and these warm-toned materials are quickly giving tried-and-true chrome a run for its money. According to Tamara Kaye-Honey, the designer responsible for this pretty Southern California room, this change is only natural. “There’s a lovely patina that comes from working with materiels like unlacquered brass,” she says. “Plus, when paired with white, the palette is soothing while also feeling fresh and modern.” On the following page, interior talents from across the country share their favorite golden-hued spaces from their own design portfolios.

From top to bottom, the architectural features here make such an impact. This home was built from the ground up with everything being chosen and completed first-hand. I tend to incorporate millwork in many of my projects as well as herringbone as I feel it brings a bit of Paris into any home. It actually took three months to achieve the perfect stain on the floors, but the final result turned out so beautifully that I forwent a rug so as to not hide them. How did the design unfold from there? I found the chairs at Antiqueria Tribeca and instantly fell in love with them. In my projects, I prefer a touch of a masculine feel—clean lines with nothing rounded— and these chairs offered that element I was seeking. They were already upholstered in a dark purple Italian leather, so once I decided to incorporate them here, it really set the color story. The clients have three small children and are avid entertainers, so the leather is perfect for easy cleaning. It’s a shame that you don’t see wallpaper on the ceiling more often. I typically don’t work with a lot of pattern, but I wanted something a bit unexpected. The pop of plum from the wallpaper also brings a nice touch of femininity. I was so fond of the design of the paper that I custom-designed the table to mimic the graphic pattern. WITH NATURE AS HIS MUSE, DESIGNER BENNETT LEIFER COULDN’T HELP BUT TO MIMIC THE LIKENESS OF THIS APARTMENT’S COVETED PARK VIEWS THROUGH HIS SOPHISTICATED DESIGN.
There are so many standout elements. Where did you begin? The well-proportioned space lends itself to three specific areas: an entry, kitchen and this generous central space formed by the two, so I maximized the use of this space by adding a small formal dining area, helping to break up the room. I have an affinity for balanced proportions, and the gridded ceiling really contributed to the room’s symmetry, while the wall soffits truly divide the space. I then added sconces to both accent the division and to add more light without overhead lighting.
This space has layer upon layer of texture. How did you keep the mix so cohesive? Drawing inspiration from the Gramercy Park views, I incorporated flora and fauna motifs into the fabric and accent selections. The location and nature of the apartment really inspired me to use more subdued earthy, neutral tones. I love varied materials and layering textures to give a room depth and interest. I think that incorporating different textures into a space gives it an interesting and more subtle visual and tactile experience than by mixing patterns.
What’s your favorite aspect of this space? There are a few formulated contradictions of sorts in this room. I really appreciate the overall light and airy feeling of the space, but if you look closely at the materials, they are all quite heavy yet appear light and delicate: a hammered metal-legged bench and coffee table, fully upholstered and wood-framed furniture, and velvet and bullion fringe-trimmed upholstery mixed with sheer window treatments. Ultimately by unifying the color palette, all these elements work well together.

There’s a lot here that evokes a sense of wanderlust. The clients are avid photography collectors and we knew that this exploding porcelain figurine photo would hang in this space, so we selected a fabric that punched up the red in the piece and that also had Art Deco flavors to keep consistency with the period of the building. The 1920s Khotan rug is another texture that has a mix of Deco with something slightly more exotic. The nearby kitchen features stainless steel and Carrara marble, so the warm colors and textures here in this space are a nice landing for the eye. Do you typically lean toward playful palettes like this? I tend to gravitate to offbeat colors and love mixing different shades together, especially in kitchens. For this residence, we looked at a range of designs from the 1920s and ’30s and pink-and-red seemed like an oldfashioned combination to me, yet I liked the perfect unexpectedness of it for a kitchen set in a Deco-era building. This is an older home, but you’d never guess it. How do you create spaces that are both timeless and relevant to a home’s history? I think people tend to confuse qualities like safe and neutral with timeless. A timeless space is one that never loses impact, which leads me to believe that gutsy, personal, quirky spaces are the ones we never tire of, and those things you don’t arrive at by playing it safe, though they tend to come from a more thoughtful instinct than a design trend. TURN IT UP Jill Goldberg, founder of Hudson Interior Designs in Boston, goes beyond the pale, literally, as she shares her fail-proof philosophy for designing with color. Do you have a go-to shade? There’s absolutely nothing better, in my opinion, than a vibrant, Hermès-y orange. It’s my favorite color, and I love to mix it in with lots of lovely greens and blues for maximum effect. Typically, my ideal palette is one that incorporates both a warm and a cool color. Best rooms for big color? Give me a small room, and I’ll give you big, bold pattern

and plenty of color. Tiny spaces mean you don’t have to go overboard and fill them with a lot of furniture that’s eventually going to compete with your palette, so they feel more balanced and exciting to me. Share your formula for a room with look-at-me color that doesn’t overwhelm. There’s no perfect equation, of course, but I always try to start with a singular pattern or fabric that brings all the colors I’m dreaming of together. Yellow can be a bit of a gamble in the design world; the notoriously difficult shade is tricky to work with thanks to its multitude of undesirable undertones. Designer Chenault James of Columbus, Georgia, however, has it all figured out, as evidenced in this soft and sophisticated entry foyer. “As long as I gravitate toward a strong school bus yellow, the color always works for me,” she says. “It’s my favorite shade because it’s crisp and clear and doesn’t feel muddy or weighed down.” chenaultjames.com

INSPIRATION For interior designer Angie Hranowsky, color is second nature. Here, the Charleston, South Carolina-based talent dishes on how to get it made in the shade (each and every one of them). Go big: The easiest way to transform a room and a space is to paint all of your walls a bold, bright shade. It gives you the biggest bang for your buck; plus, you can always paint over it if you change your mind later. Hang it up: One of my favorite methods to bring colorful interest into a home is to introduce beautiful artwork, like the bottle cap portrait by local artist Molly B. Right in this living space I created. It informed everything else in the room—such a statement maker. Stay small: If you’re feeling a little intimidated, there’s no shame in easing into color. What’s on the color horizon for the coming year? Bold color and colored neutrals will definitely play a big role in 2016. We’re seeing people becoming more experimental as we move out of the recession, and they’re looking to make their homes feel brighter and more confident by using color. Favorite shade of the moment? It’s Farrow & Ball’s 70th anniversary next year, so there will be a lot of exciting launches to look forward to
that will mark the occasion. In terms of my favorite right now, though, it’s Stiffkey Blue (shown here). It’s regal and romantic, a real classic. Tricks for selecting the perfect paint color? I always think the most important thing is to choose a color you love! It sounds simple, but if you want to create your perfect home, making sure it’s decorated with the patterns, paints, artworks and accessories you love is the best place to start. farrow-ball.com

ith spectacular views of Central Park, the location alone elevated a Manhattan apartment set in a 37-story building from the 1930s—with its Dorothy Draper-designed lobby intact— to exceptional status. The 2,000-square-foot home away from home for an executive and his family called for an urban, contemporary look with a bit of a masculine edge. “Our design sensibilities were very compatible,” says Alabama-based interior designer Tammy Connor, who first met her clients when she worked on their cottage in South Carolina followed by a more formal turn-of-the-century East Coast residence. “The goal was for it to be approachable and livable, casual enough to feel really comfortable, yet with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.” Described by Connor as “architecturally simplistic” upon purchase, the couple’s new city digs were devoid of such features as crown molding and millwork. So, the designer collaborated with architect James Carter to rectify

the situation. According to Carter, the existing sheetrock bookcases in the living room lacked personality, proper proportions and detail. “We worked together to create bookcases with more interest that contributed to the refined feel of the new décor,” says the architect, who also created the room’s paneling. “I suggested something along the lines of French Moderne for the paneling to give the background depth and elegance without interfering with the cleaner lines of the furniture.” After reconfiguring spaces and updating the kitchen and baths, the real game changer was opening a wall and a pair of narrow portals that previously closed off the living room from the spacious foyer. “The key was to enhance the views of the park as you enter the apartment,” says builder Vincent DiSalvo, who also raised the foyer ceiling by taking down and relocating existing ductwork, making it wider and flatter, and dropping a soffit around the perimeter. “The project took about six months, largely because of the logistics of working in a high-rise.”
The foyer’s walnut table by New Classics from Ainsworth-Noah in Atlanta is centered on the opening to the living area. Here it is possible to glimpse a chair topped with brilliant blue Prima Alpaca by Sandra Jordan in Healdsburg, California, and an early 19th-century Khotan rug. The antique lantern is from Lumiere. Paneling added to the jambs and new crown molding on the soffit create depth in the room-size space.

For the kitchen, the team made the most of its small footprint, removing a gas range on the diagonal and squaring up the wall. A dark navy lacquer on the cabinets—a sophisticated upgrade from the previous maple—informed the different shades of blue used throughout on the dining room ceiling, living room draperies, accent pillows, glass accessories and even book bindings. “This created a flow from one space to another,” says Connor. Because the owners are both very tailored, they wanted furnishings and finishes that were timeless, mindful of that masculine edge and a little chic, without being over the top. “There are no florals on the upholstery,” Connor says about the fabrics that include wool-sateen, mohair and linenvelvet. “There’s a strength to the color palette, and eclectic materials such as onyx, bronze, glass and leather provide perfect accents.” Although the homeowners love antiques, Connor says the pieces selected are less about style and more about clean lines and their ability to meld with the modern artwork. “An antique can be contemporary if it’s quiet and has refined lines and proportions,” she adds.

Modern art and a mix of materials and styles create a yin-yang tension in the foyer, where the designer teamed a Louis Philippe-style chest and vintage Murano glass lamps alongside Picasso drawings and an antique French settee, all grounded with an overscale-grid hide rug. Centered between the living room’s new painted bookcases and a bold Abstract Expressionist painting, a custom-built charcoal shagreen cabinet includes a pop-up mechanism for a flat-screen TV. Skirted Madeline Stuart sofas and a John Saladino club chair, ottoman and bench provide seating with a modern vibe around an onyx coffee table. Just opposite, dining room cabinetry balances the focal wall of the living room with similar detailing. A raised ceiling in the apartment beneath resulted in a step-up to the dining

space, where curved railings were added to mitigate the platform effect and make the room more intimate. A skirted banquette in taupe velvet adds flexibility to the seating. “You can seat seven comfortably and you can push the table back to create more space,” says the designer. The master bedroom taps into the park’s winter palette with a charcoal silk-and-grass-cloth wallcovering as a textural envelope complemented with gold-thread linen-hemp draperies. Like the rest of the interiors, the master suite is not overly decorated. “It’s not all about pomp and circumstance or show,” says Connor. “Everything is rooted in traditional but simplified and layered with clean lines.” And though the view is what beckons, it is that rich balance of mixing materials and styles that really creates a place to call home.

Designers Mercedes Desio and Alberto Villalobos created elegant environs for an art-filled condo by mixing interesting textures, patterns and periods among shades of gray. W
hen an international family admired the sophisticated and detail-oriented interiors of a friend’s home decorated by Mercedes Desio and Alberto Villalobos, they knew they had found the perfect designers for their Manhattan pied-àterre. As art collectors they wanted neutral tones that didn’t compete with their contemporary collection. But because they have a large family that includes four children, comfort and ease of living were the primary considerations, which is precisely why they bought into the renovated Plaza hotel, where full in-service amenities are available to hotel guests as well as condo residents. The prestigious location, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, is also conveniently situated for the family’s frequent visits. A private wraparound terrace offers the option of an outdoor living space with views of lush interior courtyards and Central Park. “It’s close to everything—museums and Midtown,” says Desio. “It’s a perfect fit for what they want to do here in the city.” The designers, who are international themselves (he’s Colombian; she’s Italian), understood immediately what drew the couple to the iconic Plaza. “The historical exterior is more traditional,” Villalobos says of the 1907 French Renaissance château-style building, “but the interiors are a little more contemporary.” For the designers, this juxtaposition of old and new provided the best of both worlds. “The residence was new when we started so in a way it gave us more freedom, because we weren’t preserving something,” says Villalobos. The history was already there in its architectural bones, and small changes to interior finishes, such as updating door hardware to more contemporary styles, simply helped make the space more clean-lined. Working behind the scenes, builder Giovanni Cupelli oversaw subtle changes involved with such things as painting, plastering, resurfacing countertops, hanging the chandeliers, and fabricating millwork for the den. “The designers are an amazing team, and we worked hand in hand with them to execute the project,” says Cupelli. Dealing with what Villalobos described as the “beautiful proportions” of the rooms, the designers devised a palette of gray throughout. On one end of the apartment, they created an open living-and-dining area with pale dove walls that could function as both an elegant entertaining space and a family room for hanging out and having breakfast. In the living area near the fireplace, two sofas are upholstered in an alpaca-blend fabric because it is soft, durable and easy to maintain. “The client loved the bohemian look of velvet but didn’t want it to get crushed,” says Desio. Behind the sofas, encircling a rectangular contemporary Holly Hunt table long enough to support a family’s sprawl of computer notebooks, are Louis XVI-style dining chairs upholstered with outdoor fabric on the front for durability and horsehair from Loro Piana on the back. “The client loves antiques, but the chairs had to be functional,” explains Villalobos, who included a vintage screen by Fornasetti, a red chinoiserie secrétaire from the William and Mary period and a Baccarat chandelier in the mix. “The wife grew up with them,” adds Desio about the last. “It’s part of her tradition.” Throughout the apartment, offsets continue. In a multipurpose study that easily converts to a guest room, dark gray wool wallpaper provides a cozy cocoon-like feel.

Contemporary artwork by Ivory Coast artist Jean-Marc Louis, who paints on vintage canvas, is held in antique frames, and a pair of bronze sconces are sculptural highlights when paired with crisp rectilinear sofas and low tables whose trays can be removed to double as luggage racks for visiting guests. The master bedroom on the opposite end of the home is dressed in shades of cream, and the similarly toned wallpaper brings warmth to the walls. Long, sheer drapery fabric feels like what Desio describes as “an Emily Brontë moment, where the terrace doors open and the curtains are flowing. It’s light and romantic.” Meanwhile, says Villalobos, the four-poster bed offers a little more structure

and takes advantage of the vertical space. It also lends a sense of gravitas, complementing the Colonial artwork in gilded frames and bringing a sense of history to the room, where the client didn’t want antiques. The terrace, which wraps one side of the condo, leads from the master up to the dining area, and a planting of evergreens gives it an interesting and colorful vegetative wall. “We really tried to make sure that old and new continued throughout the apartment,” says Desio. Noting the storied backdrop of The Plaza and the homeowners’ leanings toward more contemporary design, the designer says of the project, “That juxtaposition is what we are all about.”

here is a lot of ‘accident’ in the creative process,” says Martyn Thompson, standing barefoot on the rough, unpolished floorboards of his SoHo loft. “But isn’t that how you arrive at the best things?” Punctuated with the unmistakably woodsy yet curiously hard to place scent of palo santo—or “holy wood”—a native South American tree thought to have healing energies, the said loft houses Thompson’s creative think tank. Enveloped in murals painted by Thompson’s partner, artist Dove Drury Hornbuckle, the space is utilized for both living and working, and sometimes even as a showroom for the multidisciplinary artist who works across the media of photography, and textile and wallpaper design. It’s here where he found the inspiration for his latest textile collection, The Accidental Expressionist. “When I first came to New York, I met a lot of very ambitious people. Everyone I came across was going to be something,” says Thompson. “Someone asked what I was going to do, and without thinking I said, ‘I’m going to be a textile designer.’ ” The declaration was somewhat of a surprise even to Thompson himself, though by this time, he was already sewing his own clothing. Thompson’s career started in his hometown of Sydney, Australia, where he painted fabrics and created clothing that he later sold in his own boutique. From this, along with the inspiration of his friends also in the apparel industry, he started photographing for highfashion brands like Hermès, though soon felt the need to try new ventures. Experimenting deeper, Thompson broadened his lens into the fields of food, travel and interiors, and had his first image reproduced into

a tapestry. The Accidental Expressionist started nearly seven years ago when Thompson was splattering a photograph with paint, realizing later that he liked the mess around the image much more, and set up to photograph it. “I was really looking for alternate ways to use my photos,” he says. “When I first started, photography had a lot more mystery around it. Now, I’m looking for the new mystery.” The collection—haphazard, watercolor-esque and tactile—is colorful but muted, made of thick fabrics woven on a jacquard loom. Painterly and highly reflective of its origins—an artist’s drop cloth—Thompson’s designs showcase the melancholy hues and raw beauty for which he has become known. “The idea of experimenting has always been a part of my practice, no matter what I was doing,” he says. “I’m always looking for new ways to explore the medium of photography. Where I am now, it is an opportunity to open up a completely different side of taking pictures.”

otential. There was no question a Southport, Connecticut, house, with its enviable views of Long Island Sound, had it, but how to unearth the possibilities from under the shell of hunter green shingles, beadboard walls and redstained pine floors was another matter. Even for a savvy homeowner with a background in interior architecture and art history, the path to the light- and art-filled beach home that Lee Baldwin envisioned eluded her. “I was delighted to find a place with privacy, property and even a pool,” says Lee about the house that was less than two decades old. “But I wasn’t in love with the finishes, floor or flow.” Then, Lee went on a local home tour, met interior designer Mar Silver, and knew what she imagined for her blended family that includes her partner, Dr. E.J. Zebro, and their four girls could be realized. “I really liked the house on the tour, especially how Mar married the older

elements with the new,” says Lee, who felt that same concept was critical to her remodel. “But more importantly, we immediately clicked on a personal level.” Silver felt their instant simpatico, as well, and, like her client, was instantly attuned to the structure’s underlying assets. “It had amazing bones that were clouded by too many disjointed materials,” says the designer, who immediately starting eyeing what could be salvaged. “We agreed to keep the inherited elements that would work with the modernization of the building.” For the exterior, that modernization translated into painting the green shingles, which were more reminiscent of the Adirondacks than Fairfield County, a lighter marine gray to better meld with the waterfront environs. In the living room, the reclaimed-wood beams made the cut, and rather than demolish the existing brick fireplace, Silver wrapped it with Cristallo stone that stops short of the ceiling to allow a

hint of the home’s original brick, now painted white, to peek out. “The theme of the house is organic minimalism and blending the old and new is part of that concept,” she says. In the family room, the original fireplace crafted from local stone that nicely complements the predominantly white-and-gray palette remained intact, while the shape of the domed ceiling was altered to accommodate a skylight. Here, and throughout most of the house, unstained character-grain oak floors replaced the more garish stained ones and cold-rolled steel was used to top built-ins, wrap shelving and provide fireplace accents. “There are no crown moldings so the steel acts as trimwork,” says Silver about the modern interpretation. After reorienting and reconfiguring the staircase and eliminating the first-floor hallway—clever maneuvers that both improved traffic flow and created space for a separate dining room—Silver designed a switchback stairway that synthesizes the black steel, character oak and glass elements. “The stair is a piece of sculpture that anchors and penetrates the entire house,” she says. But though hard-edged surfaces establish a commanding backdrop, never once did the designer lose sight of her client’s overarching desire for “a sophisticated beach house with a soft, soulful, sophisticated essence.” With pieces such as the living room’s Mies van der Rohe daybed and an Orchid table conceived by the designer purposely selected to work with the home’s sculptural lines, according to Silver, almost everything else is part of a larger story with layering as the central narrative. “The difference between cold contemporary and warm modern is the layering of materials,” explains the designer, who rounded out the space with a soft leather sofa, hide sling chairs and a hand-tufted silk rug. “It’s the nuance of the textiles and different shades of wood that add warmth and character.” A swatch of gray-stained wood fronting the concretetopped island is an unexpected textural and rustic touch in the kitchen, while in the master suite, it’s the custom bed swathed in luxurious silk-linen and gentle folds of gray-blue drapery that prevent the room from feeling static. About the latter Silver says, “The fabric takes on different personalities throughout the day and becomes moody and opaque at night.” Elevating the house to yet another level of complexity is the artwork. In the foyer, a contemporary painting and a trio of sculptures depicting ancient Bactrian idols set the stage

for what lies within. Even in what Silver aptly refers to as “the most sophisticated mudroom in the world,” a boldly colored painting juxtaposed with a tranquil image of birch trees is transformative, while a wall of built-in drawers and closets provides functionality. But it’s the combination of the art collection, deliberate layering and carefully repurposed architecture that turned the house into an evolving statement of its own. “With the reflections of the art and architecture in the glass, the wall color altering with the movement of the sun, and the shadow play that occurs throughout the day, there’s this ethereal sensibility,” says Lee. “Everything is constantly changing, and I can’t ever imagine anyone getting tired of this house.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 313
