From Les Arts de la Table to L’Art de Vivre The Refined Art of Living with THG When in the presence of remarkably well-crafted products, a euphoric feeling immediately overtakes the senses. A powerful sensation that’s substantial yet sensual, palpable yet difficult to define. The beauty, the craftsmanship, the sophistication – the qualities of these immaculate objects seem to transcend the everyday world, possessing a unique inner glow. A true je ne sais quoi. Few brands embody these traits like Lalique, DAUM, Baccarat, Christofle and Manufacture de Monaco; world-renowned ateliers with rich histories rooted in masterful and meticulous craftsmanship. These recognized brands leave no detail overlooked, creating products of the highest quality and splendor for the most discerning tastes. In the decorative hardware world, only one other company brings this same quality and sensuality to the bath: THG-Paris®. Handcrafting exquisite faucets and accessories to the highest possible standards, THG’s artisans tool, cast, mold and finish each product using celebrated techniques passed down through generations. Because of this fine legacy, THG is constantly on the search for ways to design products that resonate with their audience while communicating their distinctly understated elegance and sophistication. Oftentimes, THG’s collaborations begin with an idea from one of these distinguished brands. An exceptional detail, embellishment or design that inspires THG to craft it into a unique collection – and experience – for the home and bath. THG turns to these world class brands to help make their inspired creations, and in turn, these brands entrust THG with their reputations because they know only THG is capable of meeting their extraordinary standards. Through luxury collaboration, THG has perfected the refined art of living – bringing opulence and artistry to fine baths everywhere.
Adorned with intricate lotus leaves and delicate palmettes, THG’s Malmaison translates this iconic Christofle pattern into pure artistry for the bath. Christofle, the premier designer of French silver and decorative arts in jewelry, tableware and home accents, entrusts two of their most iconic patterns to THG.
THESE EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH: CHOWN HARDWARE 333 NW 16TH AVENUE PORTLAND, OR 97209 800.452.7634 12001 NE 12TH STREET BELLEVUE, WA 98005 800.574.4312 CHOWN.COM
A bold work of artistry, Rose’s delicate DAUM crystal handles offer beautiful variations in color, with no two alike and each piece signed.
A finer example of THG’s meticulous crafting capabilities could not be better translated than with THG’s interpretation of Manufacture de Monaco’s iconic Alhambra pattern. Monte Carlo incorporates 24 karat gold, porcelain and Swarovski® crystals to create this impeccable design for the bath.
With the official title of “Purveyor by the appointment of His Serene Highness the Prince of Monaco,” two new collections by THG were created in collaboration with the esteemed porcelain house Manufacture de Monaco.
DAUM, the legendary French art crystal atelier celebrated for its mastery of the pâte-deverre technique, uses a lost-wax method to make a mold for the sculptural elements incorporated into THG’s Rose.
The magic of Lalique crystal combines with the artistry of THG to create Dahlia, a seductive new design modeled after the famous Dahlia beauty box created by René Lalique in 1931.
Bearing the distinctive Baccarat imprint, Pétale de Cristal offers beautiful, deep colors in opulent crystal. Each translucent, lotus flower-shaped handle becomes a true bathroom jewel that could only be conceived by THG.
For more than a decade, THG has collaborated with Lalique, a brand internationally recognized for creating crystal objects d’art, jewelry and beautiful porcelain.
Baccarat is internationally renowned for their unparalleled quality, clarity and intense colors in crystal, and THG has translated this mastery flawlessly in numerous collaborations. Both THG and Baccarat have been awarded the prestigious EPV Quality Label, illustrating that THG’s brand and standards are in perfect symmetry with the crystal atelier.

EDITOR’S LETTER
Five years into the new millennium, a small group of impassioned trailblazers set out to conquer design across the country. No easy feat for this band of outsiders. We plunged ourselves into design markets, from Texas and Chicago to Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Editors were deployed to scout projects; stylists were tweaking and polishing; architectural photographers snapping. Whew! We were productive, launching markets, publishing projects and networking.
On behalf of the editorial team, we hope that you enjoy this celebratory issue of Luxe Interiors + Design. On to another exciting decade ahead‌

memo D E B BY S T E I N E R PUBLISHER
We had a great season at Luxe Interiors + Design with an array of events, including Battle of the Chefs in both Seattle and Portland! Ferguson was the sponsor for the Seattle event, which took place at the DeLille Cellars Chateau in Woodinville’s wine country in September, and Portland’s October event was at Ferguson’s newly renovated showroom in the Pearl District. The theme was British Invasion, and—in proper English style—teams of industry leaders, led by local professional chefs, rocked it out to British rock tunes in a one-hour culinary competition, where appetizers, side dishes and desserts were created and presented to a panel of judges, which included Luxe’s Pacific Northwest editor, Lisa Bingham Dewart. We also sponsored a Leathercraft luncheon at the J. Garner Home showroom and Design Harvest at the Trammell-Gagné showroom. In addition, we attended Toth Construction’s Oktoberfest, Krekow Jennings Autumnal Equinox and Ripple Design Studio’s anniversary party. Enjoy the issue!

CONTRIBUTORS
BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ
TERRI SAPIENZA
Writer / Washington, D.C. If I had a spare $20,000… I would use the money for a down payment on a small beach cottage. Favorite Luxe interview? My conversation with Arizona- and Chicago-based designer Kim Scodro about her own house was a total treat. She was so genuine and funny, plus very knowledgeable about design. I could have talked to her for hours—I think I did! What is your biggest creative influence? Travel. Stepping away from what I see and do everyday opens my eyes and reawakens my senses in ways that are always meaningful and necessary. Most exciting thing happening in design today? I’m always motivated by people who have the courage to take risks in order to do or create something they believe in. Whatever it is they do, it’s usually done with such passion that it ends up making a lot of other people happy, too. Photographer / New York
What’s intriguing you now in the world of photography? The ergonomics of professional and consumer cameras coming out onto the market. I think that there needs to be more thought that goes into them beyond the science and technology, such as how they can be more thoughtfully designed tools that are functional, fluid and efficient. If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Buffalo, New York, in the summertime. It has incredible architecture from such amazing talents as Frank Lloyd Wright and Eliel Saarinen that I would love to shoot. I would also like to wander past all the old industrial buildings and dream up what I could turn them into. What type of architecture inspires you the most? There are so many fresh designers that are creating interesting architecture and interiors in Barcelona while still holding true to the history and authenticity of what makes the city what it is. It’s always a tough balance and they are doing a fine job at it.
COM4_Contributors_094.indd 118
CLAUDIA URIBE
Photographer / Miami
If I could photograph anything… It would be the vanishing tribes of the world. What inspires you? I love midcentury modern, with a little wabi-sabi thrown in for its simplicity and use of natural objects and processes. Top three items on your design wish list: I would love to own a Serge Mouille lamp, a throw by Loro Piana or an Easy chair by Hans J. Wegner. Most memorable Luxe shoot? I really like working on the stories for the Radar section. The jewelry shoot I did last year turned out gorgeous!
TARYN BICKLEY Writer / Chicago
Most memorable Luxe interviews? Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio, and New York artist Jenna SnyderPhillips, whose work I would love to hang in my powder room someday. Writer who has deeply influenced you? Helen Fielding. Her early columns in The Independent as fictional Bridget Jones were incredible; her single thirty-something diatribe is so profound and perfect that I still laugh out loud and agree, even as a smug married woman. What do you enjoy most about design? Nothing makes me happier than sitting in a hotel room by London-based Firmdale Hotels. Co-owner Kit Kemp’s mix of prints and textures, and the play of old and new, is completely inspiring. Someday, I hope to rehab a Chicago brownstone with all these compounding lyrical elements.

DEFINING MOMENTS OVER THE COURSE OF A DECADE, DESIGN TRENDS DEVELOP AND SWAY THE MANNER IN WHICH WE LIVE. AS LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN CELEBRATES ITS 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, WE LOOK BACK AT THE FORCES THAT TOOK HOLD AND HELPED FASHION THE AMERICAN DESIGN LANDSCAPE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS AND ARLYN HERNANDEZ
HONEST ARCHITECTURE MATERIAL PALETTES
Architecture has always been the piece of the design puzzle that serves as the foundation for any next-level home and shapes how it is lived in. Contemporary elements (think glass and steel) have long been go-to mediums in the construction world for sleek façades, but honest, stripped-down materials—concrete, salvaged wood, rammed earth—are the new heroes of high-end residential architecture.
“The effect of board-formed concrete is stunning because it is typically thought of as functional with no aesthetic giveback. I love the idea of taking a temporal material like wood and freezing it in time.”
“SIMPLE, NATURAL MATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE ARE AMONG THE MOST LUXURIOUS AND CONNECT US TO SOMETHING LARGER THAN OURSELVES.” -KEVIN LICHTEN ARCHITECT AND PARTNER, LICHTEN CRAIG ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS

“I’D CALL THIS PAST 10 YEARS ‘THE DECADE OF REDISCOVERY.’ MIDCENTURY MODERN IS ALIVE AND WELL, AND I THINK IT IS A PRODUCT OF LOOKING BACK TO A PERIOD WHEN AMERICA APPEARED TO BE STRONG AND HAPPY. BUT I PERSONALLY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE 1960S—DAVID HICKS, ANGELO DONGHIA, PACO RABANNE.”
BACK to the FUTURE METALLICS / RETRO
What once was old is most certainly new again, as designers are paying homage to past decades and ushering in nostalgic silhouettes and retro finishes into modern day. Shag rugs, brass accents and chrome detailing are at home with coveted pieces by Saarinen, van der Rohe and Baughman. Vintage-meets-modern is the name of the game for the new luxury interior.
-JOHN IKE ARCHITECT AND PARTNER, IKE KLIGERMAN BARKLEY
“Metallics are the new neutral. They're the new transitional look; not modern, not traditional.”
“I’M OBSESSED WITH ’70S DESIGN. MY CHILDHOOD HOME WAS FILLED WITH CHROME, GLASS…THAT WHOLE HALSTONESQUE APPROACH. DESIGN IN THAT DECADE WAS GLAMOROUS, IMAGINATIVE AND THOROUGHLY MODERN. IT WASN’T THE LEAST BIT DERIVATIVE LIKE THE DECADE THAT FOLLOWED.” -DARA CAPONIGRO CREATIVE DIRECTOR, SCHUMACHER

What is it that makes an interior worthy of a second glance? Fearlessness. The last decade has come to be defined as one that has seen a resurgence in daring interiors; ones built around explosions of color, pattern on pattern, one-of-a-kind furnishings, rugs and artifacts. These design elements lend personal narratives to the spaces they inhabit, infusing a unique, spirited thumbprint.

OFF THE RUNWAY
STRADDLING THE WORLDS OF INTERIORS AND FASHION, NEW YORK INTERIOR DESIGNER RYAN KORBAN EXPLAINS THE INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBYN TWOMEY
COM4_RadarRyanKorban_114.indd 114
For many interior designers, working with a fashion brand is the ultimate feat—an opportunity to flex creative muscles not often sculpted in the shelter realm. But for interior designer Ryan Korban, fashion is where he first cut his design teeth. “In a sense, fashion was my first client,” he explains of his early days designing in retail. “It was my job to design around it yet not interrupt it.” The self-taught designer quickly turned industry heads with one übercool space after another and his modern-romantic aesthetic soon caught the eye of one famed fashion designer in particular: Alexander Wang. “It’s such an easy working relationship,” says Korban, who has become synonymous with Wang for their wildly successful collaborations over the past 10 years—from his many storefronts to his own home. “I think the best part of our collective work is that we both consistently strive for bigger and better in every project we undertake.” This commitment to greatness has resulted in a deeper understanding for Korban on the effects each industry has on the
other. “It’s always been important that I understand fashion in order to create interiors where fashion can thrive,” says the designer. “I think people are really starting to grasp the notion that a space can be put together in the same way an outfit is selected.” To that point, fashion houses are now looking to interiors, as “architecture and furniture silhouettes are proving to be huge influences for their brand,” expounds Korban. He further asserts, “designers whose aesthetics are based in minimalism—Jil Sander, Céline, Balenciaga—often turn to interior structures as a source of research.” And though runway collections appear to move at light speed in comparison to interior debuts, the fashion industry is largely dependent on the design world to support their lines. “These days you need to have a well-defined environment to act as an extension of the lifestyle you are selling,” states Korban. Suffice it to say, the synergy between fashion and interiors seems to be an ever-growing one that will continue to elevate each to the next level.

JOHN DICK & KRISTA SCHROCK Los Angeles | discinteriors.com
WHY WE LOVE THEM: This design duo conceives spaces that reflect their SoCal surroundings—calm, refined and textured. Each space has a clear point of view, utilizing the natural materials and of-the-earth color palettes they’ve become known for.
LUXE PRESENTS THE TALENTED FRESH DESIGNERS WHO ARE COMMANDING OUR ATTENTION.
In their words: “Always looking to nature as inspiration, we fantasize about designing an inn in Big Sur high on a cliff with views of the treetops and the ocean. We love the idea of creating interiors that age well over time, and that are united with nature.”
WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LACY MORRIS
CATHERINE KWONG
San Francisco | catherinekwong.com WHY WE LOVE HER: Recognized for her use
of strong graphic elements and a rich color palette, Catherine Kwong’s interiors are elegant, tailored and, though modern and glamorous, still distinctly livable.
▲ FRANCES
MERRILL
Los Angeles | reathdesign.com
WHY WE LOVE HER: Frances Merrill’s designs are a study in sophistication without being too stuffy. Her interiors are marked with a bit of East Coast prep blended seamlessly with a laid-back California vibe, all characterized with layered textures and lively color. In her words: “My dream project would be to renovate the Topanga Ranch Motel. It is a cottage-style building built in the 1920s to house the road workers expanding the Pacific Coast Highway. It operated as a motel until the state bought it in 2001 and has been empty ever since. I would love to restore it into a 1930s/’40s California-style home, like a location from a Raymond Chandler novel.”
MEGAN WINTERS
Chicago | meganwinters.com
WHY WE LOVE HER: Grounded in an element of high style, Megan Winters layers bold color palettes with elegant yet glamorous and edgy furnishings. Her fearless compositions are often characterized by whimsical nods and a flawless mix of vintage and modern. In her words: “The best advice I have ever received is to live life to the fullest, work hard, follow your passion and always, without exception and regardless of cost, do the right thing. In business and life there are absolutes in integrity. Don’t ever let anyone convince you otherwise.”

▲ BRIAN
PAQUETTE
Seattle | brianpaquetteinteriors.com
WHY WE LOVE HIM: Embracing all things outdoors, Brian Paquette’s aesthetic encompasses what the Pacific Northwest is all about: a sense of adventure. His designs utilize lots of layering, clean lines and a thoughtful use of organic color. In his words: “I am constantly inspired by the work of others in the industry, whether that be interior designers, furniture and lighting designers, textile makers, artists, ceramicists or photographers. I am only as good as the people I surround myself with and there is some really thoughtful and next-level work being done here in Seattle.”
DICK & SCHROCK PHOTO: D. GILBERT. MERRILL PHOTO: ANDRE VIPPOLIS. PAQUETTE PHOTO: BELATHEE. WINTERS PHOTO: WERNER STRAUBE. KWONG PHOTO: BESS FRIDAY.
In her words: “My biggest design complaint is when there are too many statement pieces crowded into one space; it starts to dilute the effect. It’s all about layering in the elements to speak to each other in a cohesive way so that the interiors maintain a sense of balance.”

WHY WE LOVE HER: From sleek, minimal and modern to rustic and relaxed with lots of natural woods, Andee Hess’ designs are hard to pin down. This varied aesthetic is something she equates to design being like storytelling, and that not everyone’s stories are the same. In her words: “I like to take on projects that pose new challenges; there is always so much to investigate and discover. However, residential work is always fascinating to me, as I’m entering someone else’s world and, with that, all of their expectations.”
PATRICK MELE
New York | patrickmele.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Patrick Mele’s bold use of graphic color and prints has earned him an avid following. Both relaxed and refined, his rooms feel as if they could have always been there, loved and lived-in.
PALOMA CONTRERAS
Houston | palomacontreras.com
In his words: “Whether it’s during trips abroad, through books or articles I read or from those that have come before me, there are individuals whose talent, curiosity and contribution astound me. This is what drives me forward.”
WHY WE LOVE HER: Keeping with tradition,
Paloma Contreras seeks out classic silhouettes and timeless pieces, mixing them in a modern arrangement. Though polished and refined, expect pops of color with a bit of glam. In her words: “I would love to design a winery or residence in Napa Valley—one of my favorite places in the world. It embodies effortless, chic American style; laid-back but sophisticated, pared down yet completely luxurious. There’s a great balance of the two worlds unlike anything I have experienced anywhere else.”

CALEB
ANDERSON
New York | calebandersondesign.com
WHY WE LOVE HIM: One to take risks, Caleb Anderson’s creations
are eclectic and curious yet polished, and often his spaces have an element of surprise or a moment of the avant-garde. In his words: “I would love to restore a large historic house with solid bones and interesting architecture. I would curate the rooms with antiques and modern elements and create a magnificent garden. I am fascinated not just for these homes’ architectural characteristics, but also for the intrigue of their history.”
COM_LX4_Radar_FreshFaces_116-118.indd 118
WHY WE LOVE HIM: Andrew Brown creates spaces that have history and that feel well-traveled and collected with texture and depth. With a lean toward clean lines in a classic, high-contrast color palette, expect a seamless interweaving of styles and eras in his designs—old and new, masculine and feminine, simple and ornate. In his words: “I’m very curious by nature and am always intrigued by the history behind things. I travel a lot, which keeps my eyes open to new possibilities. In design, I try to look at everything in a different way—my mind is always thinking in terms of how to reinterpret the objects that I see that inspire me.”

RADAR / FUTURE OF DESIGN Stephen Burks, of Stephen Burks Man Made, in his new Brooklyn-based design studio. He’s currently working on collections for Dedon, Parachilna and Roche Bobois, as well as his brand’s participation in this year’s Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in China and The Armory Show in New York for 2016.
WORLD AFFAIRS
For decades, international design has almost exclusively referenced a European sensibility. But I’m interested in a more inclusive approach that considers other world cultures. In the early days of my career, I looked at travel as purely for inspiration. Once I began visiting the so-called more exotic regions of the world and creating with the people there, however, travel grew to be just as important an aspect of my designs as sketching. Going to places like Colombia, the Philippines and Senegal has become an inextricable part of my process and life. My work with various artisan groups started when I was sought out by nonprofits like Aid To Artisans and Artesanías de Colombia to be a design consultant. But as I started to understand

the role that commerce could play in benefitting these craftsmen, my manufacturing partners and I began to seek them out. I found my Senegalese basket-weaving artisans, for example, at a street fair in New York City’s West Village, and my long-term relationship with them has now included several collaborative trips to Africa to produce the Single and Triple Basket lamps and Material Composition 3 totem. This desire to return to handmade objects is becoming more widespread, and I believe that luxury in the 21st century will be defined by more appropriate expressions of authentic craftsmanship. However, as luxury brands move into new markets, they’re increasingly introduced to new interpretations of what that
means, and of technique and luxury itself. Authenticity shouldn’t be thought of as a marketing ingredient that can just be added to a production formula; it’s about being true to the culture of the product’s origin. But there are always clever ways to combine the hand with industry; in fact, it’s the coming together of industrial manufacturing and handmade craftsmanship, two seemingly disparate modes of production, that is inherently contemporary and innovative. And with this new partnership, the role of designer is shifting, as he or she is becoming a collaborator for change. The designer of the future will be at the center of every discussion of new ideas and social progress.

ROCHE BOBOIS There’s no denying Sacha Lakic’s design roots: The sexy curves and daredevil lines of the Paris-based talent’s furniture speak to his aesthetic sensibilities as loudly as the idling of the engines of the Yamaha-powered motorcycles he used to design. And his most recent collaboration with Italian furniture giant Roche Bobois is more of the same—as illustrated by the Aircell fauteuils below—with the edgy silhouettes of chairs and sofas that would look equally as comfortable with a cashmere throw or a leather jacket draped over their arms. roche-bobois.com

WHO: Deeply influenced by his hometown of Bellingham, Washington, Dylan Furst specializes in capturing picturesque moments from the great outdoors—both locally and internationally. WHAT: If you have a green thumb, follow this explorer for a glimpse of dreamlike sceneries—from leafy paradises and rustic wooden cabins to verdant forests teeming with interesting wildlife. WHY: Because Furst relishes every moment of his adventures; plus, his impressive landscapes are so majestic that they almost seem unreal. The best part? Furst doesn’t have to go far beyond his own backyard for prime subjects, thanks to its vivid mountain and lake views.
Over his 44-year career, fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent created iconic couture that continues—more than 30 years later—to make his name synonymous with luxury and elegance. It’s the longevity of his signature style that sparked the team at the Seattle Art Museum to work with the Fondation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent to launch an exhibit that would highlight over 100 of his most impressive garments. Working with fashion-and-art historian Florence Müller, the SAM’s Deputy Director of Art and Curator of European Painting and Sculpture Chiyo Ishikawa combed through the Fondation’s expansive archives to present an assortment of accessories, photographs, drawings, film and other multimedia elements that give a glimpse behind the curtain of Saint Laurent’s flawless creativity. Here, the people responsible for the exhibition share why you must mark your calendar right now for this most fashionable of retrospectives. seattleartmuseum.org
-FLORENCE MÜLLER
“Saint Laurent was the dominant couture designer of his time because of his combination of brilliant talent and alertness to the world around him. From the start of his career, he was inspired by trends in other fields including visual arts, film and music; this, along with an awareness of street style, kept his fashion current and ahead of other designers.” -CHIYO ISHIKAWA
“Yves Saint Laurent was the first living couturier to be given a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1983, which was curated by Diana Vreeland. More than 30 years later, this exhibition presented at the Seattle Art Museum is further evidence of the continuing influence of his work on today’s fashion.” -PIERRE BERGÉ

DATE BOOK HEATHER ROSS
Shell-encrusted bottles, fragrant soaps and lotions and perfectly fired ceramics are just a few of the carefully curated goods you’ll find amongst antique furniture and moody paintings at Heather Ross Natural Eclectic, a one-of-a-kind shop tucked away on Fir Street in Vancouver. Filled with treasures hand-picked by Ross herself, the store is full of sweet surprises. A true Jane of all trades—artist, photographer, shop owner and stylist—Ross is adding one more profession to her roster this spring: book author. Featuring her own images, her coffee-table book, The Natural Eclectic, is a labor of love. “Through my ‘natural eclectic’ philosophy, I delve into the themes of nature, beauty and design, encouraging others to look at the humble beauty of the natural world for inspiration,” she says. “Being known for my sense of color, I explore my signature palette in depth; plus, I have a large chapter on vignettes and what I call ‘the art of placing.’ I also share valuable tips that I gleaned from my antiquing days while living in Paris.” But whether she’s traveling to Mexico or Maui, Ross always returns home to Vancouver where nature and culture are woven together in a vibrant community of makers and merchants. Indeed the city’s aesthetic is distinct, as demonstrated through Ross’ Vancouver to-do list with as much personality as her curated shop. Read on for her favorite spots to frequent. heatherross.ca
11 a.m. Our doors open at 10:30, so I have to add my special boutique, Heather Ross Natural Eclectic, to the list, as we truly have items you can’t find anywhere else! Come in just to take in the atmosphere and artwork, or pick up a treasure to take home with you. There is a quaint park right across the street for families to enjoy as well. 12 p.m. Just around the corner from my boutique, tucked on the side street of 6th Avenue, are two fabulous independently owned clothing shops, Oliver & Lilly’s and Violet Boutique. Unique in their own way, they both carry an alluring mix of international and local lines. Also on 6th Avenue, check out Kozai Modern for its contemporary selection of furniture and lighting from such West Coast artisans as Brent Comber, as well as striking designs from Japan. 2 p.m. Next, head to Granville Street for Panache Antiques and Objets d’Art. It has an exquisite selection of finer antiques from around the world. While you’re in the area, have lunch at Heirloom
Restaurant on West 12th Avenue. I love the open, spacious atmosphere here with whitewashed walls, bleached woods and lots of windows. It happens to be a vegetarian restaurant, but it offers up the yummiest healthy food for all tastes. If you don’t get here ’til later in the afternoon, it has a lighter fare menu with happy hour deals from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. 6 p.m. There is so much to explore up South Granville for those who’d love to continue shopping, or you can head to West 4th Avenue for a relaxing stroll amongst yoga lifestyle stores, specialty tea shops and fun clothing boutiques like Fab Clothing. This street parlays the healthy West Coast style the Pacific Northwest is known for, with Canadian labels like Lululemon and Gravitypope setting up shop here. 7 p.m. Let the mountains guide you from 4th Avenue toward the water at Kitsilano Beach. This is a lovely spot to have a walk along one of the cities most scenic beaches, which features weeping willows cascading in the parks and restaurants overlooking the sea. For a lively casual atmosphere with authentic rustic Italian fare, check out the always busy Nook restaurant. I love their arugula salad with shaved Parmesan, as well as the whippedricotta crostinis. 8 p.m. If you’re an early bird, try to catch the sunset after dinner for a great end to your day. If you’re into the night scene though, head downtown to Gastown for local pubs, clubs and taverns. Gastown alone is worth a whole other day to explore!
HEADSHOT: CRAIG ANDERL. SHOP AND BOOK PHOTOS: HEATHER ROSS.
10 a.m. Next door to our boutique is the charming Beaucoup Bakery & Café. Known for its amazing flaky croissants and pain au chocolat, this is a great place to start your day with a coffee, tea or treat. If you’re in need of heartier fare, Slickity Jim’s Chat n’ Chew just opened a new location in my neighborhood at 7th and Hemlock. This place offers funky diner-style food that is anything but greasy spoon. Expect to see beards, tattoos and plaid jacket attire mixed in with whimsical yoga types.

These remarkable, original works of art by Post-Impressionist master Hugues Claude Pissarro are perfect examples of this virtuoso’s command of light and color. Much like his grandfather, the great Impressionist Camille Pissarro, Hugues Claude’s use of swift, short brushstrokes combine to create the most entrancing and desirable landscapes of the 20th century.

SHAPE SHIFTER THE PIECE: Hex Bookends THE DESIGNER: Erin Sullivan FIND IT: esobjects.com THE INSPIRATION: Featuring powerful geometric patterns, these bookends were created to reflect the careful study of nature’s balance and the intricate life-forms that exist within.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, AS PROVEN BY THESE SIX TASTEMAKERS WHOSE FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE ANYTHING BUT EXPECTED. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA HOLMES
MARY WALLIS LIGHTING DESIGNER MARYWALLIS.COM
First Impression: Substantial, modular, biomimicry, symbolic, meticulous. Artistry: Erin’s work preserves fragile, found-in-nature forms in bronze: beetles, feathers and snakes are all frozen forever in time. These organic elements are combined with geometric patterns distilled from biology, ancient symbols and precise modern shapes to create a collection with references that span centuries. Material: The polished-brass base is very satisfying; I respond to the honesty of the material. Luxury: When the bespoke nature of the piece is evident, that is luxury. Time-Honored: These bookends seem like they could be from the ancient world. I can see this collection in a glamorous foyer or library.

SEAN KNIBB
INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER KNIBBDESIGN.COM
First Impression: Simplistic, harmonious, teasing, light, elegant. Staying Power: Calvin Klein has managed to create interesting variations on traditional home pieces, elevating their elegance while keeping a level of simplicity that allows for each piece to complement a variety of styles. Form + Function: The juxtaposition between the glass and stone materials, while repeating the same square form within both, produces a gradation of transparency to opaque. Ethos: Playfulness brings a humanistic element to a design. Without it, the simplicity would feel sterile. Found: This table should live somewhere the light would constantly change, showing off the transparent levels of the base.

LUCID THOUGHTS THE PIECE: Crosscut Glass + Strata Stone Side Table THE DESIGNER: Calvin Klein Home FIND IT: calvinklein.com THE INSPIRATION: With an aim to challenge simplistic form and daily function—a trademark of the formidable brand—this side table pairs intersecting smokedtranslucent glass with a natural stone top to create material contrast and visual texture.

ROUGHLY REFINED THE PIECE: Rupi Bronze Nesting Bowls THE DESIGNER: Jaimal Odedra FIND IT: maisongerard.com THE INSPIRATION: Employing old-world sand-casting techniques, each exquisitely crafted piece is handmade by Moroccan artisans, revealing a byproduct of organic shapes conveyed in dual textures.
JUAN GARCIA MOSQUEDA SHOP OWNER CHAMBERNYC.COM
First Impression: Irregular, solid, man-made, cozy, precious. Finishing Touch: The glossy brass finish and textured exterior create a dialogue between the inside and out. Construction: Nested inside one another, the irregular shapes resemble something that comes from nature but is flecked with a human touch—a human intervention rooted in exceptional craftsmanship. Chances Are: Risk leads to great, unexpected results. It’s a fascinating way to ideate innovative products. Here, the experimentation within the applied arts led to a successful outcome that feels very natural, like part of the same visual language. Lasting Impact: People will look at these objects 100 years from now in museums and learn about our current lifestyle and contemporary human behavior. It’s these types of pieces that will eventually transcend time.

FIGHT CLUB THE PIECE: Arrow, Warrior Collection THE DESIGNER: Raymond Barberousse FIND IT: studiopgrb.com THE INSPIRATION: Warrior meets high design as this Miami-based studio challenges conventional symbolism— with the arrow no longer a weapon for conflict but rather an illuminating fixture that radiates beauty.
BRIAN THOREEN
INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER BRIANTHOREEN.COM
First Impression: Complementary, elegant, quiet, expressive, balanced. Show + Tell: Every designer’s creative process is wildly different. It is difficult to look at a final piece and know how someone has arrived there. The object will always possess phantoms of the process, but if a work is successful (like here) there is also something that has not entirely been revealed, something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Mark of Success: Balance achieved via imbalance. Memory: Ten years ago I was traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway and there was an incredibly beautiful woman that left behind an Art Deco hairpin similar to this fixture. I keep it with my drafting pencils. Play vs. Work: Playfulness is the forever mistress of all creative work.

CHRISTY MATSON AND JANE PALMER
PRODUCT DESIGNERS AT MATSON + PALMER NOONBYJANEPALMER.COM
First Impression: Textural, romantic, rugged, rich, Impressionistic. Forward-Thinking: It’s not easy to take something old and make it new, but for Designers Guild, that art seems effortless. In this collection, traditional motifs and contemporary palettes draw from the past—enlivening designs in a way that feels fresh and transformative. Work of Art: These prints don’t feel like fabric but rather painted compositions—as if Monet stopped by the studio to whip up some designs. Instant Classic: Each hand-painted fabric is quick to become an heirloom of tomorrow. That’s often the benefit of a one-of-a-kind piece, especially one that puts whimsy front and center.

WOW FACTOR THE PIECE: W Chairs THE DESIGNER: Anna Karlin FIND IT: annakarlin.com THE INSPIRATION: With the classic Windsor in mind, Anna Karlin carefully crafted the W chairs (set of four) to reflect a timeworn sensibility seen through a modern lens, meticulously whittling each spoke by hand to the desired finish, which is then met by a perfectly formed CNC seat.
LAURA AVIVA
SHOP OWNER AND PRODUCT DESIGNER LAVIVAHOME.COM
First Impression: Hand-touched, spirited, bold, evocative, regal. Composition: I love how these chairs play with form and proportion, most especially in their exaggerated torsos that reveal a soft, matte finish on the maple. Muse: Anna Karlin artfully navigates the design process in such an incredibly fluid way without relegating what she does to a specific discipline. Working with this dynamic interdisciplinary approach, she really hones the definition of what it means to create and to be a creative. Storytelling: While it’s certainly true that these chairs exude a modern silhouette, there’s also something nostalgic about them. They generate an emotional response and prevail a connection to objects in a compelling way.

MATERIAL MAGIC
SILVER AND GOLD ARE MORE THAN HOLIDAY MAINSTAYS: THESE RICH METALS ARE BRINGING SPARKLE TO THE HOME’S POWERHOUSE ROOMS ALL YEAR-ROUND. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA
There’s a reason why materials like silver and gold are such sought-after options in the worlds of fine jewelry and art: The metals are as practical as they are beautiful—their patented shimmer and shine as powerful a statement as their longevity. So, it makes sense that as the kitchen and bathroom become more and more like proper gems in the center of the homes they inhabit, that designers and architects alike would begin to implement a bit of similar material magic into their designs—a wonderfully sculptural knob in hand-cast bronze in the bath or a ribbon of brass inlaid into a complicated tile pattern on a backsplash. Here, we borrow the best of bling to celebrate kitchens and baths that are both high functioning and high fashion.
HAUTE DISH CAITLIN MURRAY
Los Angeles-based interior designer Caitlin Murray uses big doses of high-gloss brass and emerald to transform an entertainment-friendly kitchen into a moody, modern masterpiece that is huge on style. blacklacquerdesign.com Share your vision for this enviable space. The client is young and hip and works in tech, so my partner at the time, Caitlin McCarthy of Caitlin McCarthy Design, and I felt like there was a wonderful opportunity to do something fun and out there. When we found the color for the cabinets— Benjamin Moore’s Chrome Green—we knew we had exactly what we were looking for. It informed everything we did.
Favorite thing about this showstopping kitchen? I love the edgy black Marquina marble and the way that the material interacts with the other elements in the space, like the lacquered brass and the rich green of the cabinets. The resulting combination just reads as really luxurious and incredibly bold. Everything about this kitchen was designed to stand out, and that’s what it does.
Why did you opt for brass fixtures and hardware? We didn’t want to do anything that was expected, and I think using chrome or polished nickel would have been pretty, for sure, but more subtle than what we wanted to achieve. The lacquered brass, on the other hand, is super dramatic and reads so perfectly with the color story in the space that I’m not sure the kitchen would feel as balanced without it.

ON THE LINE Poggenpohl continues to challenge modern-is-cold misconceptions with +Artesio, a modular kitchen line that blends materials for maximum effect—pairing glass-front cabinets with warm wooden backsplashes and sleek aluminum panels for a hint of sparkle. In this handsome San Francisco space, for example, designer I-Ching Ueng takes the mix one step further, integrating the chromed-out accents on the kitchen’s focal wall with an attention-grabbing bronze chandelier overhead, the result of which is an effortlessly chic retreat that’s perfect for entertaining. poggenpohl.com

While German-based kitchen manufacturer Eggersmann has become well-known in the States for its sleek, contemporary kitchens with razor-sharp lines, the company hasn’t been resting on its laurels. In fact, the brand’s newest iterations prove it believes it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Leather accents and crisp stainless steel have become foundations for the company’s carefully rendered drawer organization units, including specially crafted inserts that are really spicing things up. eggersmann.com

TAILOR MADE
For tile manufacturer New Ravenna Mosaic’s latest offering—the Parterre collection—the company got personal, tasking its consumers with fl exing their creative muscles thanks to the line’s endless possibilities for customization. When designers Sara Baldwin and Paul Schatz began developing the designs, they wanted to create surfaces with the flexibility to encourage tile lovers to leave their mark, so the 18 laser-cut variations they crafted allow them to substitute natural stone with Serenity glass, shell, ceramic and even aluminum to build unique combinations for bathrooms that are as individual as the people who inhabit them. newravenna.com

Crafted from a single piece of stone, Lapicida’s Italian Arabescato marble bathtub is designed to make a statement. While its $45,000 price tag ensures the piece is as exclusive a showpiece as you can imagine for the bath, truly it is the bathtub’s creamy color and dreamy gray veining that makes it a real standout. The best part? Since it’s individually laser cut from one-of-a-kind antique stone in England, no two pieces will ever be alike. lapicida.com

Designers have been busy bringing gold and brass into the bath to pretty up what has, in the past, been purely practical, and these warm-toned materials are quickly giving tried-and-true chrome a run for its money. According to Tamara Kaye-Honey, the designer responsible for this pretty Southern California room, this change is only natural. “There’s a lovely patina that comes from working with materiels like unlacquered brass,” she says. “Plus, when paired with white, the palette is soothing while also feeling fresh and modern.” On the following page, interior talents from across the country share their favorite golden-hued spaces from their own design portfolios.

AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE TRENDS, TIPS AND TRICKS THAT HELP INFUSE A HOME WITH COLOR. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA
SHADE SPECIFIC Although neutral living has dominated the home space for quite some time, tried-and-true hues like cream, white and gray have found themselves with some major competition. As homeowners are veering away from playing it safe and toward having more fun in interiors, they’re turning to color to create one-of-a-kind retreats. Whether it’s a bright injection of hue on a well-curated selection of pattern-happy pillows or bold walls painted in a can’t-look-away shade, color is taking center stage. Here, we check in with some of the nation’s top talents on the best ways to bring happy hues home.

With all the many paint manufacturers and cleverly named swatches to choose from, the hunt for the perfect hue can prove to be difficult. From light and airy to rich and saturated, our most coveted colors are ones that are both easy to live with and that beg guests to take notice. Here, we share the covetable shades that have been making the most appearances on our design dream boards recently. From top: Pistachio, Benjamin Moore; CC0127, Fine Paints of Europe; Armoire Yellow, Ralph Lauren.

TURN IT UP Jill Goldberg, founder of Hudson Interior Designs in Boston, goes beyond the pale, literally, as she shares her fail-proof philosophy for designing with color. Do you have a go-to shade? There’s absolutely nothing better, in my opinion, than a vibrant, Hermès-y orange. It’s my favorite color, and I love to mix it in with lots of lovely greens and blues for maximum effect. Typically, my ideal palette is one that incorporates both a warm and a cool color. Best rooms for big color? Give me a small room, and I’ll give you big, bold pattern
COM_LX4_TheReport_194-201.indd 196
and plenty of color. Tiny spaces mean you don’t have to go overboard and fill them with a lot of furniture that’s eventually going to compete with your palette, so they feel more balanced and exciting to me. Share your formula for a room with look-at-me color that doesn’t overwhelm. There’s no perfect equation, of course, but I always try to start with a singular pattern or fabric that brings all the colors I’m dreaming of together. Then, I pull the shades I like out of it— introducing them onto the draperies, trim, carpet and contrast welts throughout the room. hudsoninteriordesigns.com

Yellow can be a bit of a gamble in the design world; the notoriously difficult shade is tricky to work with thanks to its multitude of undesirable undertones. Designer Chenault James of Columbus, Georgia, however, has it all figured out, as evidenced in this soft and sophisticated entry foyer. “As long as I gravitate toward a strong school bus yellow, the color always works for me,” she says. “It’s my favorite shade because it’s crisp and clear and doesn’t feel muddy or weighed down.” chenaultjames.com

STYLED TO IMPRESS Bringing in color through accessories is one of Atlanta-based designer Jessica Walmsley’s favorite ways to fill a room with warmth and personality. And this pretty dining space makes it easy to see why introducing them is so effective, especially when they’re paired with funky patterns and elegant prints. “Accessories, like blue-andwhite porcelain, for example, are the icing on the cake and, other than fabric, are my favorite part of the process,” she explains. “They make a room feel layered and lived-in.” jessicawalmsleyinteriors.com

BLACK MAGIC This moody-meets-majestic breakfast room by Birmingham, Alabama-based designer Rebecca Hawkins proves wrong the common misconception that dark colors don’t bode well in small spaces with style in spades. Instead, the chiaroscuro-inspired aesthetic of this sun-dappled spot gives the awkward corner it inhabits new life; a charming pop of yellow, too, on the upholstered bench helps elevate the room into a cozy hideaway that has quickly become a family favorite. 205.919.8842

DECODED
As head of creative for the revered British paint and wallpaper company Farrow & Ball, Charlotte Cosby is an invaluable resource when it comes to identifying color trends. She’s sharing her predictions and picks for what designers and homeowners alike will be gravitating toward in 2016:
9ART
INSPIRATION For interior designer Angie Hranowsky, color is second nature. Here, the Charleston, South Carolina-based talent dishes on how to get it made in the shade (each and every one of them). Go big: The easiest way to transform a room and a space is to paint all of your walls a bold, bright shade. It gives you the biggest bang for your buck; plus, you can always paint over it if you change your mind later. Hang it up: One of my favorite methods to bring colorful interest into a home is to introduce beautiful artwork, like the bottle cap portrait by local artist Molly B. Right in this living space I created. It informed everything else in the room—such a statement maker. Stay small: If you’re feeling a little intimidated, there’s no shame in easing into color. Start by working in more exciting shades on your fabrics or pillows—or place an eye-catching throw at the foot of your bed. angiehranowsky.com
COM_LX4_TheReport_194-201.indd 200
What’s on the color horizon for the coming year? Bold color and colored neutrals will definitely play a big role in 2016. We’re seeing people becoming more experimental as we move out of the recession, and they’re looking to make their homes feel brighter and more confident by using color. Favorite shade of the moment? It’s Farrow & Ball’s 70th anniversary next year, so there will be a lot of exciting launches to look forward to
that will mark the occasion. In terms of my favorite right now, though, it’s Stiffkey Blue (shown here). It’s regal and romantic, a real classic. Tricks for selecting the perfect paint color? I always think the most important thing is to choose a color you love! It sounds simple, but if you want to create your perfect home, making sure it’s decorated with the patterns, paints, artworks and accessories you love is the best place to start. farrow-ball.com

11ORANGE FEEL
There’s no limit to how often and how much to use your ideal color once you’ve finally found it. So, when San Francisco designer Lauren Ranes and her client stumbled upon the dreamiest shade of citrus they’d ever seen, they didn’t hesitate to introduce it again and again into the family homestead. “The color, Benjamin Moore’s Ravishing Red, is tomato, persimmon and watermelon all rolled into one,” explains Ranes. “It’s a dignified and cheerful shade.” The result is a cohesive color scheme that relies on pattern and print throughout to make it appropriate for each space. Here, in the breakfast room, for example, a charming Schumacher wallpaper behind the shelves and blue-and-white ginger jars lend the dining space off the kitchen the touch of formality it required. laurenranes.com

BRIGHT LIGHT Formal doesn’t have to be fussy when it comes to stunning candelabras that are just as handsome during daytime hours as they are when they are all lit up—at least that’s the story Dunes and Duchess is telling with the brand’s coveted four-arm version, available in a variety of colorful finishes. dunesandduchess.com

MODERN CLASSIC
One of color’s most prized properties is being able to bring a fresh, modern perspective to traditional spaces, like it does in this sweet foyer in North Carolina with inspiring architectural detail. Using a palette of soft green and subdued coral, designer Barrie Benson transformed the home’s 1950s bones into a graceful, feminine dream. “I wanted to give a nod to the old without making it feel like one’s grandmother lives here,” says Benson with a laugh. “The palette definitely sets the tone for that. It gives visitors the hint that not everything inside is as conservative as you’d expect from a more formal Southern home.” barriebenson.com

Sun Valley is a microcosm of what the ideal mountain community should be: a rich mix of nature, camaraderie, cuisine and culture. Nearly 80 years ago, W. Averell Harriman, a financier and former governor of New York, founded Sun Valley. In doing so, he created the nation’s first destination ski resort. Today, the destination is becoming the new standard-bearer for an energetic and vibrant Idaho that is claiming its place among the most coveted—not to mention, naturally beautiful—places to visit in the U.S.
BLISSFUL BEGINNINGS Sun Valley has become, in its own right, a region. More than just a tremendously historic and charming ski lodge, Sun Valley is the colloquial umbrella term used by most non-residents for the encompassing territory, including neighboring cities and Hailey. But for all intents and purposes, none of the aforementioned would be possible without Sun Valley Resort. Quite literally, “America’s first ski resort,” Sun Valley was the brainchild of W. Averell Harriman of New York, who envisioned bringing the best of Scandinavian slope-side elegance (and recreation) to the mountains of the U.S. Sun Valley quickly emerged

Above: The holidays at Sun Valley are a magical experience for families, with the traditional Holiday Ice Show followed by the Torchlight parade and fireworks on Dollar Mountain.
“It started as a crazy idea: to create a playground, on a mountain. Invent the first chairlift. Invite the famous. Make sure an unforgettable time was had by all,” explains Tim Silva, the resort’s vice president and general manager. “Today, 80 years later, legions of devoted skiers and boarders still embrace 'the Tradition'—a visit to Sun Valley." What attracts celebrities, jet setters, families and avid ski and outdoors enthusiasts to Sun Valley is its laid-back, authentic mountain atmosphere, and of course, its incomparable beauty. The Sun Valley Lodge has been reimagined for its contemporary guests with updated interior suites, amenities and a new destination spa, while maintaining the character and essence of the original, iconic building. “Sun Valley has enticed guests from all

COMMUNITY MINDED As a third-generation contractor, Paul Conrad always knew he would end up in the field. The only question—where would he start his firm—was answered the moment he set foot in Sun Valley. “It’s the people and the place,” says the president of Conrad Brothers Construction when elaborating on his almost immediate love for the valley. “From the checkout people at the grocery store to the CEO you meet in the coffee shop (though you don’t know he or she is a CEO), everyone greets you with a smile and a hello.” Based on a philosophy that centers on “integrity, quality and great people,” Conrad Brothers Construction offers extensive services through a custom-tailored team, often consisting of a project manager, project engineer, expert carpenter and supervisor. At the forefront of Sun Valley’s custom home building industry, Conrad’s understanding of the region and its prevailing architectural aesthetics has been a key to his success. In describing the community that he and his team are instrumental in contributing to, Conrad notes that Sun Valley is historic and classic, and the local architectural and interior design styles are high-caliber and worldly—and he remains

SUN VALLEY THROUGH
THE EYES OF RESIDENT DESIGNER JENNIFER HOEY How would you describe the design styles found in Sun Valley? Sun Valley’s rich history influenced a European lodge aesthetic that was prevalent when I moved here 12 years ago, but has since evolved into a more contemporary approach to design. The styles still range from rustic to modern and everywhere in between. How do you view Sun Valley changing over the next decade? With the remodeling of the Sun Valley Lodge and additional hotels being constructed in town, Sun Valley is seeing more growth and momentum. The airlines have been providing more direct flights into the Hailey airport, which allow for more connections to hubs like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. What is your advice for the firsttime visitor? Make sure to hike up Baldy for the best views in the town. In the winter, pay for an “early up” with the ski instructors to get amazing, fresh powder. Follow that with a Bowl of Soul from Java on Fourth. Go up to Galena Lodge for snowshoeing and spending a night in the yurts.
intent on keeping things that way. “The intimate nature of the valley will always maintain because of the nature of the people who live here,” he says. Famous from its beginnings for being frequented by literary greats, film royalty and business moguls, Sun Valley’s rich cultural scene invites visitors to experience an array of extraordinary activities. “Our art and cultural scene is well-subscribed to and growing,” Conrad says, “from gallery walks, lecture series sponsored by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, theater group productions and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony to the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference and now the designation as an Olympic training facility for Alpine, Nordic, snowboard, freestyle and Paralympic winter sports.” Constantly building and expanding its resort atmosphere, while preserving the sense of intimate community for which it is cherished, Sun Valley continues to be the ultimate destination for residents and visitors alike.
CONTRASTING BEAUTY Jennifer Hoey Smith, principal designer of eponymous firm Jennifer Hoey Interior Design, found Sun Valley to be the perfect place to establish her unique business model. Best known for achieving a contemporary aesthetic that is clean but complementary of the beautiful Idaho landscape, the firm aims to find harmony between contrasts, whether blending creativity with a business sense or juxtaposing a rustic look with refined materials. Q+A WITH A BEAUTIFUL HOME’S LORI ZOELLNER Do you foresee Sun Valley becoming a global destination? I think the magic of Sun Valley is the fact that while it is globally recognized as an incredible destination resort in both summer and winter, it will be able to maintain an intimate, small-town vibe.
PNW_LX26_SunValley_10_5_eg.indd 7
How might you spend an ideal Saturday in Sun Valley? I would be up early enjoying coffee and breakfast on the patio, smelling the fresh mountain air. After stopping at A Beautiful Home, I would head up north for a hike and picnic with my dogs. I would then end the perfect day playing a round of golf, followed by entertaining friends for dinner.
With the onset of winter, what changes do you see in the community? It becomes a more traditionally romantic, magical place in the winter. Horse-drawn sleigh rides, après-ski activities and dinners by a big fire.

ARTFUL CONNECTION Painting a picture of the region world-renowned for its charm and natural splendor, Patricia Wheeler, antiquarian and owner of Halloran & Sons Antiques, identifies her love of Sun Valley’s comfortable and unique atmosphere as being key to her antique selections. “The comfort that picturesque scenes depict during all seasons here in Sun Valley is authentic,” she says. “Every backdrop and office window view is dominated by the mountains and framed by snow cover or latenight moonlight after a fading sunset. This ‘patina’ sets the atmosphere for life here that demands acknowledgement that nature rules and dictates one’s recognition that their personal comfort here is up to them.” With antiques, art and furnishings thoughtfully procured from sources throughout England and France, Halloran & Sons brings rare and beautiful pieces to Sun Valley—a task in which Wheeler’s understanding of the local aesthetic and ethos provides an advantage. “Sun Valley is a classic winter and summer outdoor sports area that has also embraced a concentrated cultural events scenario. Everything in these two general categories is easily available and presented in the finest venues imaginable,” she explains. “The residents, both seasonal and permanent, reflect their interest in this lifestyle. Their preferences for homes, as well as dress and personalities, mirror those world

THE DETAILS OF HOME When asked to identify the philosophy behind her firm Bellissimo, owner Terry Murphy spoke of her desire to make visitors feel at home. “I want everyone who walks through the door to feel as though they have been invited into my home for dinner,” she says. In achieving this goal, Murphy centers Bellissimo around the details that make a house a home. “For so many years I have emphasized tabletop,” Murphy says. “I love to entertain and gather family and friends. I think my store shows that quality in all that it offers: napkins, mats, napkin rings, dishes, platters, glassware and more. I always try to have that perfect little gift for anyone, whether a man or woman, baby or host. We also offer the most beautiful gift wrapping in the valley. It is so important to cherish your friends and loved ones.” Murphy and her family first moved to Sun Valley because of the community they found there, one based on friendship, family and mutual support. Today, they continue to enjoy the region’s people and the culture they create. “We are home to a broad cross section of business and art,” Murphy says. “With new airports, restaurants, galleries and hotels, we are becoming a year-round destination resort.” WRITTEN BY DEVON ROUSH AND GRETA WOLF

TEAM FOSTER AT WINDERMERE 11100 Main Street, Suite 200 Bellevue, Washington 425.637.8373 teamfoster@fosterrealty.com fosterrealty.com You could say that real estate is in the DNA of mother-and-daughter team Tere Foster and Moya Skillman. After growing up with a father involved in the market, Foster passed a love of real estate on to her daughter Moya. Today, the pair works together to help their clients achieve the essence of the American dream, providing the utmost in personalized service through an understanding of the market and the individual client. “Real estate is a fast-paced industry. There is always a new technology or trend around the corner,” Foster says. “But the one constant is that the client is always first.” Given its reputation for operating with integrity and applying a client-centric approach, it is no wonder that Team Foster at Windermere has become the premier real estate resource throughout the Pacific Northwest.
What is a unique characteristic about your market? Foster: The international influence. Seattle is a gateway city to Asia. We are proud of our relationships with key advisors and our ability to present our clients’ properties on a global stage. Have you noticed recent trends in your marketplace? What are they? Skillman: Urbanization. Everyone wants to live near friends and family and within walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, gyms and parks. These are important factors for the Northwest buyer. What is most critical when buying a house? Skillman: Location. Grandpa always said, “You pay for dirt.” Picking the right location is the single most important thing. Houses can always be changed, painted and remodeled. You can’t change your location.
1
What are your favorite hobbies? Foster: I love to work out and quilt. Moya also enjoys working out and spends the rest of her time chasing after her two boys and their labradors.

What was the best advice you ever received and from whom? Skillman: My grandma (Tere’s mom) had a favorite saying, “Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff.” Meaning that in the grand scheme of life, any issue is a small thing and always solvable. I keep this on a framed handwritten note from my grandma at my desk. What is your favorite weekend hideaway? Foster: We love to escape to our family retreat at Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. Moya loves the small town parade and fireworks on the fourth of July. I enjoy sitting by the outdoor fireplace and watching the sunset.

lmost immediately after designer Jennifer Leonard wrapped up work on Leslie and Devon Nevius’ Portland home, the couple began searching for a new one to accommodate their growing family. This time around, it was a spacious 1923 Dutch Colonial with a large yard that they had always envisioned. And, says Leslie, “All of the bedrooms are upstairs, and the main living area has a circular flow to it for easy entertaining.” Although the layout was ideal, the house had been remodeled over the years—with an addition built on—so they turned once again to Leonard to put a fresh spin on their new digs. Getting started, Leonard engaged in a little subtractive decorating. The bedrooms, which had been previously carpeted, received new hardwood floors to match the living spaces, visually unifying the entire home. Then she began envisioning the living spaces, using rugs as a jumping-off point. “Whether a rug is quiet or loud or even somewhere in between, they are an important foundation,” she explains.
“A good quality hand-knotted carpet is worth the investment.” For example, when she found a one-of-a-kind oversize wool-and-silk rug while shopping at High Point Market in North Carolina, she immediately thought of the living room. “It was lovely in the space—a quiet backdrop of taupe, muddy-gray blues and greens, and creamy golds for the furnishings and art to play off of,” she says. These tones are reflected in the rest of the home’s soft palette of taupes, blues and grays punctuated with some sassy surprises of lime green, gold, turquoise, aqua and chartreuse. The designer also incorporated patterns and prints, to Leslie’s delight. “Decorating the house isn’t something I’m going to be doing every couple of years, so I wanted patterns that I love,” she says. “There are fabrics on chairs that make me happy every time I look at them. In the living room, for instance, we have two swivel chairs with a trellis pattern, and we have chairs in our master bedroom that are really fun, with birds and lily pads on them.” Leonard also brought in pattern via wallpaper, including a Phillip Jeffries
Many of the home’s existing and original features were retained, including the landscape’s tailored mix of plantings, which the designer augmented with topiaries and pots. Doors, windows and millwork were also preserved.

textured weave over metallic gold in the dining room, as well as one that features grand magnolia blooms in the entry hall. “Wallpaper can transform a space in ways paint can’t,” the designer notes. Nearly all of the furnishings from the owners’ previous home were used in their new one. “When designing their first house, we knew it would not be their forever home,” Leonard says. “This meant being mindful in the purchases to ensure most of the furniture could transfer to a future space.” Some pieces were refreshed for the new digs, such as the couple’s antique dining chairs, which were recovered in lush silk, velvet and mohair. Throughout, Leonard bridged her clients’ aesthetic preferences. “I love mixing old and new, and so does Leslie,” says the designer. “I think it gives a house more character, a history, a soul. Antiques feel authentic and genuine to me—classic pieces that can provide a storied backdrop to the new furnishings.” Adds Devon, “Our previous home was about 30 years older, but the owners had done a modern addition to that house, so there was going to be an infusion of modern. Through that process, I started to trust Jennifer’s aesthetic and how she would naturally blend the two worlds.” Devon got to fully live out his midcentury modern aesthetic in his Mad Men room, a stylish retreat complete with its original wood paneling, a built-in bar, a pool table and animal hide on the floor, making it the ideal spot to watch a game. Meanwhile, Leslie let her personal style fly unfettered in her dressing room, a space worthy of a Hollywood starlet with an elegant dressing table and inviting window seat. Wallpaper with brightly colored birds darting among foliage and glamorous beaded sconces round out the space. “It was a fun room to decorate,” she says. “I ran with this one and went a little girly.” In the end, the couple trusted Leonard to help procure every detail for their home—from the art to linens and even down to the flowers. “I was planting flowers in their new flowerpots when they brought their first son home from the hospital,” she recalls. That close relationship has translated into a space that reflects their style and works perfectly for the family. “There are so many houses that have a sequestered living room with the white carpet that nobody goes into,” Devon says. “But our home is fully functional and fully used.”

f fate had taken a slightly different turn, Michael Lindsey, owner of Laguna Pottery, might still be making pastries instead of selling vintage American pottery—having landed a job at a Seattle bakery shortly after graduating from college in Minnesota. “I was there a few days when the owner asked me to roll out croissant dough, and it became apparent that I had no idea whatsoever how to do that,” he says. Even though he could stand the heat (he proved to be a quick study and managed to keep the gig), he took plenty of opportunities to get out of the kitchen, hitting thrift stores and estate sales for household items and developing a passion for pottery in the process. A year or so in, Lindsey’s part-time hobby turned into a full-time job with the opening of Laguna Pottery. Located in a historic building in Pioneer Square, the shop stocks a dizzying assortment of vintage 20th-century American pottery. Customers can find everything from modest Franciscan cups to rare trays and sake bottle teapots by ceramics artist Robert Sperry. And buyers need not know the difference between mission-style and modernist pottery to feel welcome; Lindsey is as happy to educate newcomers as he is to talk about glaze with hardcore collectors. “The appeal of pottery may not make much sense to some people at first, but I was just attracted to it,” he says. “I see the same thing with first-time clients in the shop; it’s like they have found their mecca. There’s something in the colors, designs and shapes of the pieces, along with their functionality, that draw people in.” As you might expect from someone whose profession is also his passion, Lindsey is an avid collector himself. He keeps over 50 pieces of barware, vases and art pieces on display in glass cases in his home, for instance, and devotes a corner of his shop’s basement to another 50 or so prized finds. His latest splurge: a piece by Patti Warashina, who is known for her sculptural, satirical style. Though Lindsey is enthusiastic about both contemporary ceramics and pottery, he doesn’t expect to see another Golden Age, of sorts— which produced such legendary designers as Russel Wright—come again soon. (Sadly, he says mass production in the United States is just too cost prohibitive to allow that type of heyday to happen again.) Luckily, Laguna Pottery fills that void. “If you’re purchasing something from Laguna, it’s not only visually beautiful, but it also has history and is an original design,” says Lindsey. “It makes it all that more special to have in your home.”

fter a long stretch in Bellevue, an emptynester couple decided to return to their urban roots, zeroing in on the established neighborhood where they had lived when they first moved to Seattle. Situated in a prime location, the spot meant easy access to outdoor pursuits, cultural offerings and the social connection they craved. To design a house that would not only frame the views, but also capture natural light, the couple turned to architect John DeForest. Anxious to be involved in the project, they appreciated DeForest’s collaborative design process and eagerly participated in extensive questioning, homework assignments and hands-on sessions with modular blocks scaled to represent the size of the rooms. “They stacked them in different ways to show how the house could come about,” the wife says. “It was a very good visual tool.” Together, DeForest and his clients’ rigorous efforts yielded a structure of two rectangular volumes arranged around a central gallery. Clad with stained-cedar siding and cement fiberboard, the house has varying rooflines with a healthy overhang. Despite not having a gabled roof, the scale, material and proportions are intended to help it fit in among the neighborhood’s older homes. Inside, a rectilinear skylight above the central gallery pierces the cedar-lined ceiling and floods the interior with natural light, while a steel-and-glass staircase beckons upstairs to the second floor’s main living level. “The stairway and landing are translucent so the light filters down through the top,” DeForest says. According to contractor Joe McKinstry, the inclusion of the staircase introduced several interesting challenges. “We had to be careful not to damage the glass-and-steel structure, so we didn’t put it in until the very tail end of the project,” he points out. Because the structure effectively splits the spaces on the floor, the team had to rely on a temporary staircase and catwalk in between to access them.
PNW_LX26_Deforest.indd 280
Besides serving as a central organizing element for the house, the gallery’s large blank walls and natural daylight provide an ideal place to display the owners’ collection of paintings, which prominently feature Pacific Northwest artists. “It’s not just providing wall space; it’s also drawing indirect light down from the skylights at the top,” says DeForest. “You have a fairly harsh exposure to the west and a lot of light coming from the east; creating this kind of canyon in the middle of the house is a good way to light the art.” The art collection was so critical to the overall plan that DeForest and project architect Ted Cameron actually placed scaled digitized images from the owner’s collection into renderings. “We cut them out and put them into the model, so we could really visualize how they would look,” Cameron recalls. For the interiors, the owners turned to their longtime friend, designer Jan Holbrook, to come up with an elegantly minimal backdrop for the collection and to emphasize the home’s outstanding views. “I live in a modern home, and I like to think that them seeing my house has influenced them ever so subtly,” she says. For the palette, Holbrook says, “We wanted to keep things somewhat simple yet not monotone,” so she employed soft neutrals. Her furnishing choices share a similarly restrained feel. In the dining room, for example, a chandelier—pared down and rectilinear in form—illuminates a steel-andwalnut dining table without interfering with sightlines. In the kitchen, a back-painted glass backsplash seems to echo the glass stairway treads and provides a cool counterbalance to the warm cabinetry and granite countertops, as well as artfully reflecting the view for anyone working at the stove. Even the landscape has been designed with the artwork in mind. A trio of concrete walls of varying lengths and heights, for instance, not only creates a sense of privacy for the bedrooms and gym on the lower level, but also serves as another blank canvas for future outdoor artwork. “The staggering of walls helps to open and close views as you move by the house,” landscape designer Scot Eckley explains. Large boulders, sculptural Japanese maple trees and other plantings soften the walls and add seasonal color. “The Japanese maples have a branching pattern that will look beautiful all year long,” Eckley says. “The trees and walls work in tandem to give the garden a sense of scale and drama.” Now that their abode is complete, the owners are thrilled with it and love that they can enjoy the views from the top floor when they’re both inside and outdoors. “We sit out and watch the boat traffic,” the husband explains. “It’s very calming and relaxing. People say it feels like being at a resort.” Adds DeForest, “It feels almost like a penthouse up there, because there’s so much light and deck area. To be able to provide outdoor space with different types of light in the city is a really nice thing.”

Images of birds and insects (far right and bottom) fill artist April Coppini’s Portland studio and serve as inspiration for her graceful black-and-white drawings of nature. She also paints and plans to devote more time to the medium.
P
ortland artist April Coppini was designing and installing supermarket produce displays before her first child arrived. “It dawned on me that I needed to show her how to fulfill her dreams and passions,” she remembers. “So that’s when I made the switch to drawing as a career.” Her art—mostly animals and insects with a few botanicals thrown in—is transformative and moody; her record of nature, in its rawest form, is an attempt at reminding people of the world we live in. In effect, it’s something small and inherent made much larger. During her daughter’s first year, Coppini started drawing and painting; she then began selling her pieces in 2005. Her initial work—of chickens modeled from photo references and her own backyard brood—were displayed in a local coffee shop to wide acclaim. From there, the Rochester, New York-native drew more: rabbits, horses, birds, lambs and bees—the last was a result of her sadness when she heard the news of Colony Collapse Disorder, a syndrome that has afflicted the pollinators and caused their numbers to decline rapidly. “I felt hopeless and horrified, and thought the only thing I can do to cope is to draw them.” Inspired by everything from the vastness of the West to her kids, books and gardens, Coppini’s captivated by the life in things and by the air and energy associated with living creatures and their plight. “I think the fun part for me is trying to find a way to express this,” says Coppini. By mixing charcoal layers with purposeful eraser strokes, she combines both dark and messy elements with lucid delicateness. Of the results, she says, “Black-and-white has always spoken to me; the combination is basic and appeals to everyone. It’s also about the bare bones of things.” Even as demand continues to rise for her work—she typically finishes 15-30 works per month—her portfolio keeps evolving. Up next, drawings in color and even some work in paint. “Drawing is about structure,” Coppini explains. “And lately I feel like it’s time for me to push into something more about joy. For me, that happens to be color.”

D
esigners Mark Ashby and Anne Grandinetti had barely finished decorating their clients’ modernrustic ranch house in Austin when a new job called them to the Pacific Northwest. “As life happens, there was an opportunity for our clients to move to Seattle, so we came along for the ride,” says Grandinetti, who, along with Ashby, is based in Austin. The move presented just as much opportunity for the designers, who emerged from their sun-soaked Texas milieu to craft an interior that befits Seattle’s cloudier urban environment. “They gave us a lot of creative freedom to run with this and be a lot more brave,” Ashby says. The designers didn’t have to go very far to start the design process. As luck would have it, the owners purchased a loft—in the gymnasium of a former elementary school that was adapted into condos—from an art consultant who had previously worked with Ashby. Additionally, he advised them to acquire two pieces that were already hanging in the space: an etched, back-lit mirror in the entry that glows like a constellation of stars and a large-scale acrylic painting between the entry and dining area. The dining area, too, already came with a table—a massive 18-foot sculpture made from a 400-year-old redwood tree, which architect Eric Cobb, of E. Cobb Architects Inc, installed during a renovation for the space’s previous owners. The table was assembled inside the space during construction “and will be forever passed down to future residents of the gym,” Grandinetti notes. From there, it was a matter of choosing furniture, art and accessories to fill the soaring space, previously renovated by construction firm Flip Builders Inc, now known as ESMB. Everything else, including the outdoor landscaping, the hardwood and terrazzo flooring, the custom Viking appliances and the pendant lights over the dining table—even the nubby carpet on the guest room’s raised platform—was in pristine condition. Ashby and Grandinetti immediately saw the dining area as an opportunity to purchase overscale drawings from

artist Robert Longo’s famous Men in the Cities series. Not only do the bold works contrast with the roughhewn table, Ashby says, “but the movement of those two figures were in keeping with the space having been an active gym.” In addition, because there’s no family room, the adjacent living area had to double as a display space that’s visible on all sides and functions as the owners’ main hangout. “We wanted it to be comfortable, so we could really relax in the room without it feeling too slouchy or messy,” Grandinetti says. For that reason, the designers decided against “a typical loungy sectional” and instead opted for more sculptural furnishings that are upholstered in soft, cozy fabrics. The cream, gray and black tones of the furniture throughout the loft reflect Seattle’s climate, and the vibrant artwork and accessories inject a bit of color into the spaces. In the sleek black-and-white kitchen, for instance, crushed, lacquered oil drums by artist Gregg Hill bring in a visual jolt. These pieces were custom-colored for the space, including a yellow shade that matches the appliances. Red is another recurring theme in the home, starting with the stool, with an apple-like shape, on the entry floor that channels the former elementary school. “We snuck that piece in to pay tribute to the building’s history,” Grandinetti notes. While the couple are now Seattle-based, their former home state is never far away. For example, many furnishings and works of art were sourced from the couple’s former stomping grounds, including an arresting mixed-media piece by Sandra C. Fernández and Lee Chesney over the master bed. The roiling, blossom-like work is a stylish foil against the trees, shrubs and potted plants outside the master bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows. In the fairy-tale-like garden beyond, Ashby and Grandinetti chose stark white furnishings to stand out from the green hues, which landscape designer Scott Hale, of Taxus Gardeners, orchestrated for the previous owner and still maintains for the current owners. “It’s very lush, so we wanted something to really pop out of the greenery,” Grandinetti says, adding that it all had to be low-maintenance “because of the weather—nothing with a lot of cushions, nothing that the elements could be hard on.” Happily for everyone involved, the sleek lines of tables and chairs by such design icons as Verner Panton, Philippe Starck and John Dickinson fit the bill. For Ashby and Grandinetti, the project was a welcome challenge. “It was inspiring to interpret a more modern space than we had designed for them before,” Ashby says. And with their clients now happily settled in, the designers report that the loft looks the same as the day they finished decorating, thanks in large part to their elegantly restrained vision. As Grandinetti points out, “It’s important to edit, so that it always feels good at the end of a long, busy day.”

“THERE’S ONLY ONE THING IN LIFE, AND THAT’S THE CONTINUAL RENEWAL OF INSPIRATION,” SAID EMPRESS OF FASHION DIANA VREELAND. INDEED, INSPIRATION IS THE SECRET SAUCE TO ALL GREAT DESIGN MOMENTS AND THE VERY FOUNDATION FOR WHAT WE HAVE CREATED ISSUE TO ISSUE OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS. IN CELEBRATION OF LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN’S DECADE OF DESIGN, WE LOOK TO THE CUSTOMARY MEMENTO FOR THIS LANDMARK ANNIVERSARY— TIN—AND BRING IT TO LIFE WITH A TOUCH OF PANACHE.
