From Les Arts de la Table to L’Art de Vivre The Refined Art of Living with THG When in the presence of remarkably well-crafted products, a euphoric feeling immediately overtakes the senses. A powerful sensation that’s substantial yet sensual, palpable yet difficult to define. The beauty, the craftsmanship, the sophistication – the qualities of these immaculate objects seem to transcend the everyday world, possessing a unique inner glow. A true je ne sais quoi. Few brands embody these traits like Lalique, DAUM, Baccarat, Christofle and Manufacture de Monaco; world-renowned ateliers with rich histories rooted in masterful and meticulous craftsmanship. These recognized brands leave no detail overlooked, creating products of the highest quality and splendor for the most discerning tastes. In the decorative hardware world, only one other company brings this same quality and sensuality to the bath: THG-Paris®. Handcrafting exquisite faucets and accessories to the highest possible standards, THG’s artisans tool, cast, mold and finish each product using celebrated techniques passed down through generations. Because of this fine legacy, THG is constantly on the search for ways to design products that resonate with their audience while communicating their distinctly understated elegance and sophistication. Oftentimes, THG’s collaborations begin with an idea from one of these distinguished brands. An exceptional detail, embellishment or design that inspires THG to craft it into a unique collection – and experience – for the home and bath. THG turns to these world class brands to help make their inspired creations, and in turn, these brands entrust THG with their reputations because they know only THG is capable of meeting their extraordinary standards. Through luxury collaboration, THG has perfected the refined art of living – bringing opulence and artistry to fine baths everywhere.

Adorned with intricate lotus leaves and delicate palmettes, THG’s Malmaison translates this iconic Christofle pattern into pure artistry for the bath. Christofle, the premier designer of French silver and decorative arts in jewelry, tableware and home accents, entrusts two of their most iconic patterns to THG.

A bold work of artistry, Rose’s delicate DAUM crystal handles offer beautiful variations in color, with no two alike and each piece signed.

A finer example of THG’s meticulous crafting capabilities could not be better translated than with THG’s interpretation of Manufacture de Monaco’s iconic Alhambra pattern. Monte Carlo incorporates 24 karat gold, porcelain and Swarovski® crystals to create this impeccable design for the bath.

With the official title of “Purveyor by the appointment of His Serene Highness the Prince of Monaco,” two new collections by THG were created in collaboration with the esteemed porcelain house Manufacture de Monaco.

DAUM, the legendary French art crystal atelier celebrated for its mastery of the pâte-deverre technique, uses a lost-wax method to make a mold for the sculptural elements incorporated into THG’s Rose.

The magic of Lalique crystal combines with the artistry of THG to create Dahlia, a seductive new design modeled after the famous Dahlia beauty box created by René Lalique in 1931.

Bearing the distinctive Baccarat imprint, Pétale de Cristal offers beautiful, deep colors in opulent crystal. Each translucent, lotus flower-shaped handle becomes a true bathroom jewel that could only be conceived by THG.

For more than a decade, THG has collaborated with Lalique, a brand internationally recognized for creating crystal objects d’art, jewelry and beautiful porcelain.

Baccarat is internationally renowned for their unparalleled quality, clarity and intense colors in crystal, and THG has translated this mastery flawlessly in numerous collaborations. Both THG and Baccarat have been awarded the prestigious EPV Quality Label, illustrating that THG’s brand and standards are in perfect symmetry with the crystal atelier.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Five years into the new millennium, a small group of impassioned trailblazers set out to conquer design across the country. No easy feat for this band of outsiders. We plunged ourselves into design markets, from Texas and Chicago to Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Editors were deployed to scout projects; stylists were tweaking and polishing; architectural photographers snapping. Whew! We were productive, launching markets, publishing projects and networking.

On behalf of the editorial team, we hope that you enjoy this celebratory issue of Luxe Interiors + Design. On to another exciting decade ahead‌

memo LISA LOVELY PUBLISHER

It’s been such an exciting year for Luxe Interiors + Design San Francisco! We have had the pleasure of partnering with so many wonderful people these past few months, including our friends and advertisers. First, we had a successful event at 66 Mint, celebrating with owners Joey Chait and Marcus Chait, followed by the 5th Art Harvest event at The Sonoma House at Patz & Hall with Russell Joy, CEO of Patz & Hall Winery. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with both of these amazing companies, as well as every single advertiser in this issue, and I want to personally thank them all for their support of Luxe. We are now in full swing of the event season, and I am proud to introduce in this issue our very first holiday advertising section, which offers some very unique, valuable and incredible holiday inspiration for our readers. We look forward to a busy season and I wish you all the very best and a happy, healthy holiday! Enjoy the issue!

CONTRIBUTORS

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

TERRI SAPIENZA

Writer / Washington, D.C. If I had a spare $20,000… I would use the money for a down payment on a small beach cottage. Favorite Luxe interview? My conversation with Arizona- and Chicago-based designer Kim Scodro about her own house was a total treat. She was so genuine and funny, plus very knowledgeable about design. I could have talked to her for hours—I think I did! What is your biggest creative influence? Travel. Stepping away from what I see and do everyday opens my eyes and reawakens my senses in ways that are always meaningful and necessary. Most exciting thing happening in design today? I’m always motivated by people who have the courage to take risks in order to do or create something they believe in. Whatever it is they do, it’s usually done with such passion that it ends up making a lot of other people happy, too. Photographer / New York

What’s intriguing you now in the world of photography? The ergonomics of professional and consumer cameras coming out onto the market. I think that there needs to be more thought that goes into them beyond the science and technology, such as how they can be more thoughtfully designed tools that are functional, fluid and efficient. If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Buffalo, New York, in the summertime. It has incredible architecture from such amazing talents as Frank Lloyd Wright and Eliel Saarinen that I would love to shoot. I would also like to wander past all the old industrial buildings and dream up what I could turn them into. What type of architecture inspires you the most? There are so many fresh designers that are creating interesting architecture and interiors in Barcelona while still holding true to the history and authenticity of what makes the city what it is. It’s always a tough balance and they are doing a fine job at it.

COM4_Contributors_094.indd 84

CLAUDIA URIBE

Photographer / Miami

If I could photograph anything… It would be the vanishing tribes of the world. What inspires you? I love midcentury modern, with a little wabi-sabi thrown in for its simplicity and use of natural objects and processes. Top three items on your design wish list: I would love to own a Serge Mouille lamp, a throw by Loro Piana or an Easy chair by Hans J. Wegner. Most memorable Luxe shoot? I really like working on the stories for the Radar section. The jewelry shoot I did last year turned out gorgeous!

TARYN BICKLEY Writer / Chicago

Most memorable Luxe interviews? Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio, and New York artist Jenna SnyderPhillips, whose work I would love to hang in my powder room someday. Writer who has deeply influenced you? Helen Fielding. Her early columns in The Independent as fictional Bridget Jones were incredible; her single thirty-something diatribe is so profound and perfect that I still laugh out loud and agree, even as a smug married woman. What do you enjoy most about design? Nothing makes me happier than sitting in a hotel room by London-based Firmdale Hotels. Co-owner Kit Kemp’s mix of prints and textures, and the play of old and new, is completely inspiring. Someday, I hope to rehab a Chicago brownstone with all these compounding lyrical elements.

DEFINING MOMENTS OVER THE COURSE OF A DECADE, DESIGN TRENDS DEVELOP AND SWAY THE MANNER IN WHICH WE LIVE. AS LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN CELEBRATES ITS 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, WE LOOK BACK AT THE FORCES THAT TOOK HOLD AND HELPED FASHION THE AMERICAN DESIGN LANDSCAPE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS AND ARLYN HERNANDEZ

HONEST ARCHITECTURE MATERIAL PALETTES

Architecture has always been the piece of the design puzzle that serves as the foundation for any next-level home and shapes how it is lived in. Contemporary elements (think glass and steel) have long been go-to mediums in the construction world for sleek façades, but honest, stripped-down materials—concrete, salvaged wood, rammed earth—are the new heroes of high-end residential architecture.

“The effect of board-formed concrete is stunning because it is typically thought of as functional with no aesthetic giveback. I love the idea of taking a temporal material like wood and freezing it in time.”

“SIMPLE, NATURAL MATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE ARE AMONG THE MOST LUXURIOUS AND CONNECT US TO SOMETHING LARGER THAN OURSELVES.” -KEVIN LICHTEN ARCHITECT AND PARTNER, LICHTEN CRAIG ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS

“I’D CALL THIS PAST 10 YEARS ‘THE DECADE OF REDISCOVERY.’ MIDCENTURY MODERN IS ALIVE AND WELL, AND I THINK IT IS A PRODUCT OF LOOKING BACK TO A PERIOD WHEN AMERICA APPEARED TO BE STRONG AND HAPPY. BUT I PERSONALLY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE 1960S—DAVID HICKS, ANGELO DONGHIA, PACO RABANNE.”

BACK to the FUTURE METALLICS / RETRO

What once was old is most certainly new again, as designers are paying homage to past decades and ushering in nostalgic silhouettes and retro finishes into modern day. Shag rugs, brass accents and chrome detailing are at home with coveted pieces by Saarinen, van der Rohe and Baughman. Vintage-meets-modern is the name of the game for the new luxury interior.

-JOHN IKE ARCHITECT AND PARTNER, IKE KLIGERMAN BARKLEY

“Metallics are the new neutral. They're the new transitional look; not modern, not traditional.”

“I’M OBSESSED WITH ’70S DESIGN. MY CHILDHOOD HOME WAS FILLED WITH CHROME, GLASS…THAT WHOLE HALSTONESQUE APPROACH. DESIGN IN THAT DECADE WAS GLAMOROUS, IMAGINATIVE AND THOROUGHLY MODERN. IT WASN’T THE LEAST BIT DERIVATIVE LIKE THE DECADE THAT FOLLOWED.” -DARA CAPONIGRO CREATIVE DIRECTOR, SCHUMACHER

-SUSAN FELDMAN COFOUNDER, ONE KINGS LANE

What is it that makes an interior worthy of a second glance? Fearlessness. The last decade has come to be defined as one that has seen a resurgence in daring interiors; ones built around explosions of color, pattern on pattern, one-of-a-kind furnishings, rugs and artifacts. These design elements lend personal narratives to the spaces they inhabit, infusing a unique, spirited thumbprint.

“I LIKE TO USE WALLPAPER AS A DEPARTURE FROM THE USUAL. IT CAN BE AN ALTERNATIVE TO ART AND CREATE A WHOLE DIFFERENT FEELING.” -TRIP HAENISCH INTERIOR DESIGNER, TRIP HAENISCH & ASSOCIATES

Clockwise from top: Brooklyn artist Rebecca Atwood unites her watercolor patterns with wallpaper in her new collection. OFF THE RUNWAY

STRADDLING THE WORLDS OF INTERIORS AND FASHION, NEW YORK INTERIOR DESIGNER RYAN KORBAN EXPLAINS THE INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBYN TWOMEY

COM4_RadarRyanKorban_114.indd 114

For many interior designers, working with a fashion brand is the ultimate feat—an opportunity to flex creative muscles not often sculpted in the shelter realm. But for interior designer Ryan Korban, fashion is where he first cut his design teeth. “In a sense, fashion was my first client,” he explains of his early days designing in retail. “It was my job to design around it yet not interrupt it.” The self-taught designer quickly turned industry heads with one übercool space after another and his modern-romantic aesthetic soon caught the eye of one famed fashion designer in particular: Alexander Wang. “It’s such an easy working relationship,” says Korban, who has become synonymous with Wang for their wildly successful collaborations over the past 10 years—from his many storefronts to his own home. “I think the best part of our collective work is that we both consistently strive for bigger and better in every project we undertake.” This commitment to greatness has resulted in a deeper understanding for Korban on the effects each industry has on the

other. “It’s always been important that I understand fashion in order to create interiors where fashion can thrive,” says the designer. “I think people are really starting to grasp the notion that a space can be put together in the same way an outfit is selected.” To that point, fashion houses are now looking to interiors, as “architecture and furniture silhouettes are proving to be huge influences for their brand,” expounds Korban. He further asserts, “designers whose aesthetics are based in minimalism—Jil Sander, Céline, Balenciaga—often turn to interior structures as a source of research.” And though runway collections appear to move at light speed in comparison to interior debuts, the fashion industry is largely dependent on the design world to support their lines. “These days you need to have a well-defined environment to act as an extension of the lifestyle you are selling,” states Korban. Suffice it to say, the synergy between fashion and interiors seems to be an ever-growing one that will continue to elevate each to the next level.

DAVID

JOHN DICK & KRISTA SCHROCK Los Angeles | discinteriors.com

WHY WE LOVE THEM: This design duo conceives spaces that reflect their SoCal surroundings—calm, refined and textured. Each space has a clear point of view, utilizing the natural materials and of-the-earth color palettes they’ve become known for.

LUXE PRESENTS THE TALENTED FRESH DESIGNERS WHO ARE COMMANDING OUR ATTENTION.

In their words: “Always looking to nature as inspiration, we fantasize about designing an inn in Big Sur high on a cliff with views of the treetops and the ocean. We love the idea of creating interiors that age well over time, and that are united with nature.”

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LACY MORRIS

CATHERINE KWONG

San Francisco | catherinekwong.com WHY WE LOVE HER: Recognized for her use

of strong graphic elements and a rich color palette, Catherine Kwong’s interiors are elegant, tailored and, though modern and glamorous, still distinctly livable.

▲ FRANCES

MERRILL

Los Angeles | reathdesign.com

WHY WE LOVE HER: Frances Merrill’s designs are a study in sophistication without being too stuffy. Her interiors are marked with a bit of East Coast prep blended seamlessly with a laid-back California vibe, all characterized with layered textures and lively color. In her words: “My dream project would be to renovate the Topanga Ranch Motel. It is a cottage-style building built in the 1920s to house the road workers expanding the Pacific Coast Highway. It operated as a motel until the state bought it in 2001 and has been empty ever since. I would love to restore it into a 1930s/’40s California-style home, like a location from a Raymond Chandler novel.”

MEGAN WINTERS

Chicago | meganwinters.com

WHY WE LOVE HER: Grounded in an element of high style, Megan Winters layers bold color palettes with elegant yet glamorous and edgy furnishings. Her fearless compositions are often characterized by whimsical nods and a flawless mix of vintage and modern. In her words: “The best advice I have ever received is to live life to the fullest, work hard, follow your passion and always, without exception and regardless of cost, do the right thing. In business and life there are absolutes in integrity. Don’t ever let anyone convince you otherwise.”

▲ BRIAN

PAQUETTE

Seattle | brianpaquetteinteriors.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Embracing all things outdoors, Brian Paquette’s aesthetic encompasses what the Pacific Northwest is all about: a sense of adventure. His designs utilize lots of layering, clean lines and a thoughtful use of organic color. In his words: “I am constantly inspired by the work of others in the industry, whether that be interior designers, furniture and lighting designers, textile makers, artists, ceramicists or photographers. I am only as good as the people I surround myself with and there is some really thoughtful and next-level work being done here in Seattle.”

DICK & SCHROCK PHOTO: D. GILBERT. MERRILL PHOTO: ANDRE VIPPOLIS. PAQUETTE PHOTO: BELATHEE. WINTERS PHOTO: WERNER STRAUBE. KWONG PHOTO: BESS FRIDAY.

In her words: “My biggest design complaint is when there are too many statement pieces crowded into one space; it starts to dilute the effect. It’s all about layering in the elements to speak to each other in a cohesive way so that the interiors maintain a sense of balance.”

ANDEE

HESS

Portland | osmosedesign.com

WHY WE LOVE HER: From sleek, minimal and modern to rustic and relaxed with lots of natural woods, Andee Hess’ designs are hard to pin down. This varied aesthetic is something she equates to design being like storytelling, and that not everyone’s stories are the same. In her words: “I like to take on projects that pose new challenges; there is always so much to investigate and discover. However, residential work is always fascinating to me, as I’m entering someone else’s world and, with that, all of their expectations.”

PATRICK MELE

New York | patrickmele.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Patrick Mele’s bold use of graphic color and prints has earned him an avid following. Both relaxed and refined, his rooms feel as if they could have always been there, loved and lived-in.

PALOMA CONTRERAS

Houston | palomacontreras.com

In his words: “Whether it’s during trips abroad, through books or articles I read or from those that have come before me, there are individuals whose talent, curiosity and contribution astound me. This is what drives me forward.”

WHY WE LOVE HER: Keeping with tradition,

Paloma Contreras seeks out classic silhouettes and timeless pieces, mixing them in a modern arrangement. Though polished and refined, expect pops of color with a bit of glam. In her words: “I would love to design a winery or residence in Napa Valley—one of my favorite places in the world. It embodies effortless, chic American style; laid-back but sophisticated, pared down yet completely luxurious. There’s a great balance of the two worlds unlike anything I have experienced anywhere else.”

BROWN

Birmingham | andrewbrowninteriors.com

CALEB

ANDERSON

New York | calebandersondesign.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: One to take risks, Caleb Anderson’s creations

are eclectic and curious yet polished, and often his spaces have an element of surprise or a moment of the avant-garde. In his words: “I would love to restore a large historic house with solid bones and interesting architecture. I would curate the rooms with antiques and modern elements and create a magnificent garden. I am fascinated not just for these homes’ architectural characteristics, but also for the intrigue of their history.”

COM_LX4_Radar_FreshFaces_116-118.indd 118

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Andrew Brown creates spaces that have history and that feel well-traveled and collected with texture and depth. With a lean toward clean lines in a classic, high-contrast color palette, expect a seamless interweaving of styles and eras in his designs—old and new, masculine and feminine, simple and ornate. In his words: “I’m very curious by nature and am always intrigued by the history behind things. I travel a lot, which keeps my eyes open to new possibilities. In design, I try to look at everything in a different way—my mind is always thinking in terms of how to reinterpret the objects that I see that inspire me.”

RADAR / FUTURE OF DESIGN Stephen Burks, of Stephen Burks Man Made, in his new Brooklyn-based design studio. He’s currently working on collections for Dedon, Parachilna and Roche Bobois, as well as his brand’s participation in this year’s Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in China and The Armory Show in New York for 2016.

WORLD AFFAIRS

For decades, international design has almost exclusively referenced a European sensibility. But I’m interested in a more inclusive approach that considers other world cultures. In the early days of my career, I looked at travel as purely for inspiration. Once I began visiting the so-called more exotic regions of the world and creating with the people there, however, travel grew to be just as important an aspect of my designs as sketching. Going to places like Colombia, the Philippines and Senegal has become an inextricable part of my process and life. My work with various artisan groups started when I was sought out by nonprofits like Aid To Artisans and Artesanías de Colombia to be a design consultant. But as I started to understand

COM_LX4_FutureOfDesign_120.indd 120

MASTER OF THE HANDCRAFTED-INDUSTRIAL MIX, STEPHEN BURKS TALKS AUTHENTICITY, GLOBAL CULTURES AND THE FUTURE OF DESIGN. AS TOLD TO JESSE BRATTER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY NOAH KALINA

the role that commerce could play in benefitting these craftsmen, my manufacturing partners and I began to seek them out. I found my Senegalese basket-weaving artisans, for example, at a street fair in New York City’s West Village, and my long-term relationship with them has now included several collaborative trips to Africa to produce the Single and Triple Basket lamps and Material Composition 3 totem. This desire to return to handmade objects is becoming more widespread, and I believe that luxury in the 21st century will be defined by more appropriate expressions of authentic craftsmanship. However, as luxury brands move into new markets, they’re increasingly introduced to new interpretations of what that

means, and of technique and luxury itself. Authenticity shouldn’t be thought of as a marketing ingredient that can just be added to a production formula; it’s about being true to the culture of the product’s origin. But there are always clever ways to combine the hand with industry; in fact, it’s the coming together of industrial manufacturing and handmade craftsmanship, two seemingly disparate modes of production, that is inherently contemporary and innovative. And with this new partnership, the role of designer is shifting, as he or she is becoming a collaborator for change. The designer of the future will be at the center of every discussion of new ideas and social progress.

ON DISPLAY BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH: ROBERT MOTHERWELL’S ELEGIES IN BAY AREA COLLECTIONS

EXPANSION: SERENA & LILY

The San Francisco-based brand with a fresh, California aesthetic is adding sunny Los Angeles to its shop lineup—joining a local storefront and a beach market in Montauk, New York. Here, cofounders Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter talk business. serenaandlily.com THE LOCATION.

Dugan: Like in San Francisco, the Serena & Lily Design Shop is more of a design laboratory than a store, where the customer can come experience our brand by interacting with our products, working with our design associates and taking away swatches and tear sheets.

THE FUTURE.

Kanter: We’re continuing to expand our retail stores with another opening in Connecticut, and then several more in the works throughout 2016. We will also continue to add products to our home and fashion lines, so look for fresh, new additions to both by next spring.

THE SPACE.

Kanter: We looked at the space with a more contemporary lens. We feel it’s an amalgamation of Japanese minimalism, Danish modernism, signature Serena & Lily and a little luxe all mixed into one design language.

IN PURSUIT OF THE PERFECT PROPERTY, LUXE OPENS THE DOORS TO THREE LUXURIOUS HOMES ON THE SAN FRANCISCO REAL ESTATE MARKET.

LUXURY PENTHOUSE IN THE SKY

GEOMETRIC FLIP IN COW HOLLOW

VICTORIAN WITH PERIOD DETAILS

The building, Lumina, is one of the most discussed new constructions in the city, and the penthouse commands the two top floors of the tallest of its two towers. Designed by architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia, potential buyers should expect the ultimate in indulgent living. Why we love it: No matter where you stand, you’re guaranteed 360-degree views of San Francisco’s sunrise and sunset. $49 million, 201 Folsom Street; sothebysrealty.com

Local firm M-Projects created this five-bedroom, five-bath home with an earthy display of natural materials—bamboo, cedar and stone— a plethora of indoor-outdoor living spaces and a panoramic rooftop deck perfect for entertaining. Why we love it: The small accents, like lighting by Charles de Lisle and a floor-toceiling Calacatta marble fireplace, are what make the space feel special. $7 million, 1864 Greenwich Street; luxuryportfolio.com

Originally built in 1887, the façade of this historic Glen Park home beautifully retains many of its original touches, such as scalloped shingles, elaborate dentils and large bay windows. Inside, all of the modern upgrades that one would expect from a 20th-century home. Why we love it: Guests are right at home in a full onebedroom, one-bath, detached au pair suite with a fireplace and private patio. $1.8 million, 1793 Sanchez Street; luxuryportfolio.com

WHAT’S DIFFERENT?

ON DISPLAY PHOTO: COURTESY FINE ARTS MUSEUMS OF SAN FRANCISCO, ACHENBACH FOUNDATION, THE REVA AND DAVID LOGAN COLLECTION OF ILLUSTRATED BOOKS. EXPANSION PHOTO: COURTESY SERENA & LILY.

This winter, the de Young Museum celebrates famed Abstract Expressionist Robert Motherwell, who had deep roots in the San Francisco art scene. He started his academic career studying painting at the California School of the Fine Arts (which is now the San Francisco Art Institute) and went on to study at Stanford University. He later became one of the key components of the “New York School,” a phrase he coined to describe the group of Abstract Expressionists creating during the 1940s through the ’60s. In conjunction with his birthday, the de Young Museum is showcasing 13 works, now through March 2016, from his celebrated series, Elegy to the Spanish Republic. The series was set in motion when Motherwell was just 22 years old and witnessed the 1937 San Francisco rally for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War. It made a lasting impression on him, and he would go on to devote more than 200 paintings to the theme and series. deyoung.famsf.org

Dugan: Every store that we open is chosen because the neighborhood, the street, the locale has a distinct vibe; this allows us to riff off of, and ultimately tailor, our presentation and the brand experience to that local character. In the case of West Hollywood, it’s a crisp edginess.

WHAT: Expect a muted, graphic Instagram feed with black-and-white freehand sketches, intriguing real-time architectural angles and photographs from Hogman’s travels.

WITH CEO JESÚS LINARES ANDREU WORLD

When did you open? We welcomed our first guests into our new showroom at 85 2nd Street in May 2015. Why the Financial District? The space joins the permanent showrooms in Chicago and New York, and aims to bridge the gap between Andreu World’s presence on the East Coast and Midwest with the West Coast’s design community. We were attracted to the Financial District because it houses some of the city’s oldest and newest landmarks. Describe the space. It’s organized into distinct exhibition areas that showcase the versatility of Andreu World’s products. The seating gallery displays the company’s range of chairs, bar and counter stools, armchairs and lounge chairs, including new versions of fixed- or swivel-stool bases, and chairs and armchairs with rocker bases. Our sofa collections and their complementary table companions round out the space. Do you offer any special services? Our showroom is an open space for both designers and end users. We have the best professional interior designers to work together with our customers to develop the different product configurations required for each project. All work tools are online, and we also have an online configurator that allows us to show the customer what his or her furniture project looks like in real time. andreuworld.com

IN HIS WORDS: “Design is intriguing by nature, as long as it’s good. But how do you define that? It could be the shape, function or the context in which it was created—I like to keep the definition open. It’s an ever-changing area that evolves from day to day, whether it applies to little pocket-size devices or largescale architecture.”

COLLABORATION:

ROCHE BOBOIS There’s no denying Sacha Lakic’s design roots: The sexy curves and daredevil lines of the Paris-based talent’s furniture speak to his aesthetic sensibilities as loudly as the idling of the engines of the Yamaha-powered motorcycles he used to design. And his most recent collaboration with Italian furniture giant Roche Bobois is more of the same—as illustrated by the Aircell fauteuils below—with the edgy silhouettes of chairs and sofas that would look equally as comfortable with a cashmere throw or a leather jacket draped over their arms. roche-bobois.com

WHY: Because the linear graphics and muted color motifs are absolutely mesmerizing. Follow Hogman as he shows just how fascinating angles and perspective can be: colorful shelving in an art store, the slant of a San Francisco street or even a white chair in the corner of a white room.

DATE BOOK Designer Nicole Hollis is known for her modern, earthy interiors with moody color palettes, plenty of drama and an abundance of natural materials. She launched her eponymous San Francisco-based firm in 2002 and has since built a lofty reputation for luxurious and eclectic designs. She’s worked on residences from New York to Hawaii, hotels in Seattle and wineries in Napa, but it’s her hometown of San Francisco that continues to inspire her. Here, she takes us through the perfect day, exploring all of her favorite design-rich locales and eateries in the City by the Bay. nicolehollis.com 9 a.m. Start the day in The Mission. There are so many great food options and hidden shopping gems there. Grab breakfast at Universal Café. It’s a perennial favorite from the first dot-com boom—dependable and delicious. 10 a.m. It’s time to shop! Some of my favorite stores are nearby. Basil Racuk, for example, has beautiful handmade leather bags; they’re very Cali and very cool. Gravel & Gold is also NorCal hippie-girl-chic with a laid-back attitude. There, you can find Pendleton blankets, handmade moccasins and beautiful old journals. Press: Works on Paper is a stationery boutique that carries a highly curated collection of both new and used art and design books. 11 a.m. The Heath Ceramics factory nearby is also worth a visit, but definitely don’t miss Small Trade Company upstairs. Founded by designer Matt Dick, Small Trade Company features artisan textiles and uniforms—part open studio, part showroom and part creative gallery.

12 p.m. For more shopping that’s just a little farther afield, you can visit the newly opened Noe Valley boutique The Podolls. San Franciscans will admit their city is not known for fashion, but The Podolls is one of those surprising moments of chicness. 1 p.m. For lunch, head to The Yellow Building in Dogpatch. It’s an old stable building that dates back to 1859, and was renovated by Sagan Piechota Architecture. Inside, Piccino makes a great lunch spot—cozy and low-key. It features a locally sourced, Italianinspired seasonal menu that’s absolutely delicious. 2:30 p.m. While you’re still at The Yellow Building, stop into Modern Appealing Clothing—another stylish San Francisco clothing shop that also features housewares— and Dig, an old-school wine merchant that is fun to explore. 3:30 p.m. Go for a studio visit at nearby Pablo Lighting. Pablo Pardo has been an innovator in the San Francisco modern design

community for more than 20 years. His lighting is pitch-perfect.

DATE BOOK PHOTOS: LAURE JOLIET.

NICOLE HOLLIS

4 p.m. For an afternoon of art, there are several destinations around town that I frequent. Gallery Japonesque in Jackson Square is a favorite and features a Japanese aesthetic, from ancient to modern. 5:30 p.m. Don’t forget to give some love to the contemporary art galleries, too. I like the Jessica Silverman Gallery, Catherine Clark Gallery, Gallery 16 and the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts. The latter is a San Francisco institution, an exhibition space and research center. 7 p.m. For dinner, I highly recommend State Bird Provisions. It always gets a lot of attention, and deservedly so. You never know what’s on the menu; it’s different every night and always exciting. After dinner, I try to have a nightcap at my artist friends Mark and Charley’s house. They work together as the fine arts studio Evans & Brown—and they make the best martinis in town.

These remarkable, original works of art by Post-Impressionist master Hugues Claude Pissarro are perfect examples of this virtuoso’s command of light and color. Much like his grandfather, the great Impressionist Camille Pissarro, Hugues Claude’s use of swift, short brushstrokes combine to create the most entrancing and desirable landscapes of the 20th century.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, AS PROVEN BY THESE SIX TASTEMAKERS WHOSE FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE ANYTHING BUT EXPECTED. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA HOLMES

MARY WALLIS LIGHTING DESIGNER MARYWALLIS.COM

First Impression: Substantial, modular, biomimicry, symbolic, meticulous. Artistry: Erin’s work preserves fragile, found-in-nature forms in bronze: beetles, feathers and snakes are all frozen forever in time. These organic elements are combined with geometric patterns distilled from biology, ancient symbols and precise modern shapes to create a collection with references that span centuries. Material: The polished-brass base is very satisfying; I respond to the honesty of the material. Luxury: When the bespoke nature of the piece is evident, that is luxury. Time-Honored: These bookends seem like they could be from the ancient world. I can see this collection in a glamorous foyer or library.

First Impression: Simplistic, harmonious, teasing, light, elegant. Staying Power: Calvin Klein has managed to create interesting variations on traditional home pieces, elevating their elegance while keeping a level of simplicity that allows for each piece to complement a variety of styles. Form + Function: The juxtaposition between the glass and stone materials, while repeating the same square form within both, produces a gradation of transparency to opaque. Ethos: Playfulness brings a humanistic element to a design. Without it, the simplicity would feel sterile. Found: This table should live somewhere the light would constantly change, showing off the transparent levels of the base.

ROUGHLY REFINED THE PIECE: Rupi Bronze Nesting Bowls THE DESIGNER: Jaimal Odedra FIND IT: maisongerard.com THE INSPIRATION: Employing old-world sand-casting techniques, each exquisitely crafted piece is handmade by Moroccan artisans, revealing a byproduct of organic shapes conveyed in dual textures.

JUAN GARCIA MOSQUEDA SHOP OWNER CHAMBERNYC.COM

First Impression: Irregular, solid, man-made, cozy, precious. Finishing Touch: The glossy brass finish and textured exterior create a dialogue between the inside and out. Construction: Nested inside one another, the irregular shapes resemble something that comes from nature but is flecked with a human touch—a human intervention rooted in exceptional craftsmanship. Chances Are: Risk leads to great, unexpected results. It’s a fascinating way to ideate innovative products. Here, the experimentation within the applied arts led to a successful outcome that feels very natural, like part of the same visual language. Lasting Impact: People will look at these objects 100 years from now in museums and learn about our current lifestyle and contemporary human behavior. It’s these types of pieces that will eventually transcend time.

First Impression: Complementary, elegant, quiet, expressive, balanced. Show + Tell: Every designer’s creative process is wildly different. It is difficult to look at a final piece and know how someone has arrived there. The object will always possess phantoms of the process, but if a work is successful (like here) there is also something that has not entirely been revealed, something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Mark of Success: Balance achieved via imbalance. Memory: Ten years ago I was traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway and there was an incredibly beautiful woman that left behind an Art Deco hairpin similar to this fixture. I keep it with my drafting pencils. Play vs. Work: Playfulness is the forever mistress of all creative work.

First Impression: Textural, romantic, rugged, rich, Impressionistic. Forward-Thinking: It’s not easy to take something old and make it new, but for Designers Guild, that art seems effortless. In this collection, traditional motifs and contemporary palettes draw from the past—enlivening designs in a way that feels fresh and transformative. Work of Art: These prints don’t feel like fabric but rather painted compositions—as if Monet stopped by the studio to whip up some designs. Instant Classic: Each hand-painted fabric is quick to become an heirloom of tomorrow. That’s often the benefit of a one-of-a-kind piece, especially one that puts whimsy front and center.

WOW FACTOR THE PIECE: W Chairs THE DESIGNER: Anna Karlin FIND IT: annakarlin.com THE INSPIRATION: With the classic Windsor in mind, Anna Karlin carefully crafted the W chairs (set of four) to reflect a timeworn sensibility seen through a modern lens, meticulously whittling each spoke by hand to the desired finish, which is then met by a perfectly formed CNC seat.

LAURA AVIVA

SHOP OWNER AND PRODUCT DESIGNER LAVIVAHOME.COM

First Impression: Hand-touched, spirited, bold, evocative, regal. Composition: I love how these chairs play with form and proportion, most especially in their exaggerated torsos that reveal a soft, matte finish on the maple. Muse: Anna Karlin artfully navigates the design process in such an incredibly fluid way without relegating what she does to a specific discipline. Working with this dynamic interdisciplinary approach, she really hones the definition of what it means to create and to be a creative. Storytelling: While it’s certainly true that these chairs exude a modern silhouette, there’s also something nostalgic about them. They generate an emotional response and prevail a connection to objects in a compelling way.

MATERIAL MAGIC

SILVER AND GOLD ARE MORE THAN HOLIDAY MAINSTAYS: THESE RICH METALS ARE BRINGING SPARKLE TO THE HOME’S POWERHOUSE ROOMS ALL YEAR-ROUND. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

There’s a reason why materials like silver and gold are such sought-after options in the worlds of fine jewelry and art: The metals are as practical as they are beautiful—their patented shimmer and shine as powerful a statement as their longevity. So, it makes sense that as the kitchen and bathroom become more and more like proper gems in the center of the homes they inhabit, that designers and architects alike would begin to implement a bit of similar material magic into their designs—a wonderfully sculptural knob in hand-cast bronze in the bath or a ribbon of brass inlaid into a complicated tile pattern on a backsplash. Here, we borrow the best of bling to celebrate kitchens and baths that are both high functioning and high fashion.

HAUTE DISH CAITLIN MURRAY

Los Angeles-based interior designer Caitlin Murray uses big doses of high-gloss brass and emerald to transform an entertainment-friendly kitchen into a moody, modern masterpiece that is huge on style. blacklacquerdesign.com Share your vision for this enviable space. The client is young and hip and works in tech, so my partner at the time, Caitlin McCarthy of Caitlin McCarthy Design, and I felt like there was a wonderful opportunity to do something fun and out there. When we found the color for the cabinets— Benjamin Moore’s Chrome Green—we knew we had exactly what we were looking for. It informed everything we did.

Favorite thing about this showstopping kitchen? I love the edgy black Marquina marble and the way that the material interacts with the other elements in the space, like the lacquered brass and the rich green of the cabinets. The resulting combination just reads as really luxurious and incredibly bold. Everything about this kitchen was designed to stand out, and that’s what it does.

Why did you opt for brass fixtures and hardware? We didn’t want to do anything that was expected, and I think using chrome or polished nickel would have been pretty, for sure, but more subtle than what we wanted to achieve. The lacquered brass, on the other hand, is super dramatic and reads so perfectly with the color story in the space that I’m not sure the kitchen would feel as balanced without it.

ON THE LINE Poggenpohl continues to challenge modern-is-cold misconceptions with +Artesio, a modular kitchen line that blends materials for maximum effect—pairing glass-front cabinets with warm wooden backsplashes and sleek aluminum panels for a hint of sparkle. In this handsome San Francisco space, for example, designer I-Ching Ueng takes the mix one step further, integrating the chromed-out accents on the kitchen’s focal wall with an attention-grabbing bronze chandelier overhead, the result of which is an effortlessly chic retreat that’s perfect for entertaining. poggenpohl.com

WHIRLPOOL SUNSET BRONZE

If you’re craving an alternative to the decades-old stainless-steel appliance trend, Whirlpool’s latest offering is a welcomed palate cleanser in the kitchen sphere. This spring, the company will introduce a full suite of kitchen appliances available in a warm-toned painted metallic named Sunset Bronze, which is sure to turn some heads. whirlpool.com

TOP DRAWER

While German-based kitchen manufacturer Eggersmann has become well-known in the States for its sleek, contemporary kitchens with razor-sharp lines, the company hasn’t been resting on its laurels. In fact, the brand’s newest iterations prove it believes it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Leather accents and crisp stainless steel have become foundations for the company’s carefully rendered drawer organization units, including specially crafted inserts that are really spicing things up. eggersmann.com

TAILOR MADE

For tile manufacturer New Ravenna Mosaic’s latest offering—the Parterre collection—the company got personal, tasking its consumers with fl exing their creative muscles thanks to the line’s endless possibilities for customization. When designers Sara Baldwin and Paul Schatz began developing the designs, they wanted to create surfaces with the flexibility to encourage tile lovers to leave their mark, so the 18 laser-cut variations they crafted allow them to substitute natural stone with Serenity glass, shell, ceramic and even aluminum to build unique combinations for bathrooms that are as individual as the people who inhabit them. newravenna.com

SOAK

Crafted from a single piece of stone, Lapicida’s Italian Arabescato marble bathtub is designed to make a statement. While its $45,000 price tag ensures the piece is as exclusive a showpiece as you can imagine for the bath, truly it is the bathtub’s creamy color and dreamy gray veining that makes it a real standout. The best part? Since it’s individually laser cut from one-of-a-kind antique stone in England, no two pieces will ever be alike. lapicida.com

The bathtub is from Victoria + Albert; the chandelier is from 1stdibs. All of the hardware used throughout the space is from Waterworks, with the exception of the vintage seahorse hardware sourced from the Rose Bowl Flea Market.

Designers have been busy bringing gold and brass into the bath to pretty up what has, in the past, been purely practical, and these warm-toned materials are quickly giving tried-and-true chrome a run for its money. According to Tamara Kaye-Honey, the designer responsible for this pretty Southern California room, this change is only natural. “There’s a lovely patina that comes from working with materiels like unlacquered brass,” she says. “Plus, when paired with white, the palette is soothing while also feeling fresh and modern.” On the following page, interior talents from across the country share their favorite golden-hued spaces from their own design portfolios.

The Waterworks vanity, faucet, mirror and floor tile in this midcentury-inspired bathroom by Ryan White all contribute to the space’s timeless look; the sconces are from Circa Lighting. GILDED AGE GENTLEMAN’S STUDY

ARTISTIC TOUCHES ABOUND IN THIS STUDY, WHERE DESIGNER GEOFFREY DE SOUSA’S THOUGHTFUL DETAILS PLAY THE LEADING ROLE.

There are so many standout elements in this space. Where did you even begin? When I was concepting the design, there was a show at the de Young museum that focused on the Aesthetic Movement. I was so inspired by its emphasis on both nature and pattern that it really sparked a design that was heavy in those elements. With that as my muse, I had a wallpaper installer intricately cut out the pattern at the top to create this crawling effect, which took a solid 1 1/2 weeks to complete. The result is so interesting and perfectly highlights the amazing barrel-shaped ceiling.

How did you ensure that this space remained functional yet beautiful? There needed to be a place to work and relax, so I created a room that serves as both a library and reception area. A bar cart adds a bit of fun mixology to the design, while the showstopping desk offers a plethora of storage and space for work and displaying décor. Chair / Jean de Merry / jeandemerry.com. You’re known for frequenting juxtapositions in your designs. Does this room speak to that? This space is a hallmark of my approach. The Aesthetic Movement was all about creating layers in spaces, but here I played off that by layering decades. I love for rooms to have a sense of history, so I paired a desk that is very 1970s in flavor with a chair that has a more ’20s vibe to it. The rug is ultra modern, yet the wallpaper harks back to the late 19th century.

HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR LIVING ROOM

ELEGANCE AND DRAMA UNITE TO CREATE A HARMONIOUS MARRIAGE OF ELEMENTS IN THIS HISTORICAL PIED-ÀTERRE BY INTERIOR DESIGNER KENDALL WILKINSON.

All at once glamorous and timeless, this room really rivals its setting—the famed Brocklebank Apartments. The building has a unique history, as it was made famous by the 1958 Hitchcock film Vertigo. For the design, the homeowners wanted it to reflect their love affair with old New York, yet they still desired a contemporary, modern-day design. When I came to the space, it was tired and dated, and I completely revamped it into a stylish pied-à-terre with clean-lined architecture and a crisp interior.

So how exactly did you fashion a space that was current with historical flair? This was originally such a flat area, so we went through classic molding designs to create both the depth and dimension of the final space. Although it was challenging, the conceptualization and design added architectural elements to the interiors. To go with these elements, I chose a demure yet sparkling palette of fabrics and finishes to highlight the 1930s and ’40s lighting, and then I added Art Deco furniture and accessories throughout.

Let’s talk about your lighting choices, especially since San Francisco is known for its fog. Did you add the additional lighting for that specific reason? The lighting selection was intended to honor the period and, given that San Francisco can often be foggy and gray, to also achieve brightness and a certain sparkle throughout the interior. Lighting always plays a very large role in my work, and in this case it was multifaceted: the recessed ceiling light, sconces and decorative fixtures all worked together harmoniously.

HAUTE HOSTING DINING ROOM

INTERIOR DESIGNER SOLEDAD ALZAGA COMPLEMENTS MODERN ARCHITECTURE WITH CRISP, CLEAN FURNISHINGS IN RICH SHADES OF CHOCOLATE.

For such an open floor plan, how were you able to create spatial distinction between the different areas? I had to consider the architect’s aesthetic, the clients’ needs and my own style, so we chose a custom console to separate the adjoining dining and living spaces that worked well with everyone’s preferences. It has a nice low profile so as to not break the fluidity, and lights up from within, highlighting the grains and lines in the materials. It’s perfect for showcasing accessories and also doubles as a buffet.

Neutrals are anything but basic here. What led you to create a palette so heavy in neutrals? The house has wall-to-wall windows that open up completely to embrace the view of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, which naturally becomes the focus when you walk in. By having the interiors clean, modern and neutral, they don’t compete with the tones outside. I typically like to use beiges and varying hues of browns with added pops of color and texture, but here the blues and greens found in the view became these pops of color.

That color scheme mixed with the furnishings really creates a masculine feel in this room. This is a big space, so I wanted to use substantial furniture in both size and look. While searching for options, I almost had a dining table made, but then my client and I saw this table. We knew it would be perfect if we just tweaked the dimensions to accommodate a big party. I chose the chairs for their perfect, rich caramel hue. The room does have a masculine feel, but the backs of the chairs make me think of a woman’s corset, lending just a touch of femininity.

AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE TRENDS, TIPS AND TRICKS THAT HELP INFUSE A HOME WITH COLOR. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

SHADE SPECIFIC Although neutral living has dominated the home space for quite some time, tried-and-true hues like cream, white and gray have found themselves with some major competition. As homeowners are veering away from playing it safe and toward having more fun in interiors, they’re turning to color to create one-of-a-kind retreats. Whether it’s a bright injection of hue on a well-curated selection of pattern-happy pillows or bold walls painted in a can’t-look-away shade, color is taking center stage. Here, we check in with some of the nation’s top talents on the best ways to bring happy hues home.

With all the many paint manufacturers and cleverly named swatches to choose from, the hunt for the perfect hue can prove to be difficult. From light and airy to rich and saturated, our most coveted colors are ones that are both easy to live with and that beg guests to take notice. Here, we share the covetable shades that have been making the most appearances on our design dream boards recently. From top: Pistachio, Benjamin Moore; CC0127, Fine Paints of Europe; Armoire Yellow, Ralph Lauren.

TURN IT UP Jill Goldberg, founder of Hudson Interior Designs in Boston, goes beyond the pale, literally, as she shares her fail-proof philosophy for designing with color. Do you have a go-to shade? There’s absolutely nothing better, in my opinion, than a vibrant, Hermès-y orange. It’s my favorite color, and I love to mix it in with lots of lovely greens and blues for maximum effect. Typically, my ideal palette is one that incorporates both a warm and a cool color. Best rooms for big color? Give me a small room, and I’ll give you big, bold pattern

COM_LX4_TheReport_194-201.indd 196

and plenty of color. Tiny spaces mean you don’t have to go overboard and fill them with a lot of furniture that’s eventually going to compete with your palette, so they feel more balanced and exciting to me. Share your formula for a room with look-at-me color that doesn’t overwhelm. There’s no perfect equation, of course, but I always try to start with a singular pattern or fabric that brings all the colors I’m dreaming of together. Then, I pull the shades I like out of it— introducing them onto the draperies, trim, carpet and contrast welts throughout the room. hudsoninteriordesigns.com

Yellow can be a bit of a gamble in the design world; the notoriously difficult shade is tricky to work with thanks to its multitude of undesirable undertones. Designer Chenault James of Columbus, Georgia, however, has it all figured out, as evidenced in this soft and sophisticated entry foyer. “As long as I gravitate toward a strong school bus yellow, the color always works for me,” she says. “It’s my favorite shade because it’s crisp and clear and doesn’t feel muddy or weighed down.” chenaultjames.com

STYLED TO IMPRESS Bringing in color through accessories is one of Atlanta-based designer Jessica Walmsley’s favorite ways to fill a room with warmth and personality. And this pretty dining space makes it easy to see why introducing them is so effective, especially when they’re paired with funky patterns and elegant prints. “Accessories, like blue-andwhite porcelain, for example, are the icing on the cake and, other than fabric, are my favorite part of the process,” she explains. “They make a room feel layered and lived-in.” jessicawalmsleyinteriors.com

ALL IN

Although this Miami living room by designer Robert Passal is not for the faint of heart, who wants to be faint of heart anyway? With just about every color of the rainbow present and accounted for, this space does more than pay lip service to the city’s Art Deco origins, and all of the vibrant, framed artwork ties the look together with all the mastery of Picasso. robertpassal.com

A cool take on preppy painted furniture pieces, Bungalow 5’s Marco collection features a line of case goods categorized by its crisp silhouettes upholstered in rich, textural grass cloth. The nautical navy hue of the large cabinet showcased here looks especially chic when paired with the piece’s handsome gold nailheads and contemporary square pulls. bungalow5.com

BLACK MAGIC This moody-meets-majestic breakfast room by Birmingham, Alabama-based designer Rebecca Hawkins proves wrong the common misconception that dark colors don’t bode well in small spaces with style in spades. Instead, the chiaroscuro-inspired aesthetic of this sun-dappled spot gives the awkward corner it inhabits new life; a charming pop of yellow, too, on the upholstered bench helps elevate the room into a cozy hideaway that has quickly become a family favorite. 205.919.8842

FOLLOW THE

WHEEL One look at his color explosion of an interiors portfolio is all the evidence you need that New York designer Miles Redd is used to breaking the rules. For this pretty seating area, however, Redd followed the leader right on down the color wheel—where a perfectly selected analogous palette of yellow, blue and green fills the formal space with drama and intrigue. milesredd.com

DECODED

As head of creative for the revered British paint and wallpaper company Farrow & Ball, Charlotte Cosby is an invaluable resource when it comes to identifying color trends. She’s sharing her predictions and picks for what designers and homeowners alike will be gravitating toward in 2016:

9ART

INSPIRATION For interior designer Angie Hranowsky, color is second nature. Here, the Charleston, South Carolina-based talent dishes on how to get it made in the shade (each and every one of them). Go big: The easiest way to transform a room and a space is to paint all of your walls a bold, bright shade. It gives you the biggest bang for your buck; plus, you can always paint over it if you change your mind later. Hang it up: One of my favorite methods to bring colorful interest into a home is to introduce beautiful artwork, like the bottle cap portrait by local artist Molly B. Right in this living space I created. It informed everything else in the room—such a statement maker. Stay small: If you’re feeling a little intimidated, there’s no shame in easing into color. Start by working in more exciting shades on your fabrics or pillows—or place an eye-catching throw at the foot of your bed. angiehranowsky.com

COM_LX4_TheReport_194-201.indd 200

What’s on the color horizon for the coming year? Bold color and colored neutrals will definitely play a big role in 2016. We’re seeing people becoming more experimental as we move out of the recession, and they’re looking to make their homes feel brighter and more confident by using color. Favorite shade of the moment? It’s Farrow & Ball’s 70th anniversary next year, so there will be a lot of exciting launches to look forward to

that will mark the occasion. In terms of my favorite right now, though, it’s Stiffkey Blue (shown here). It’s regal and romantic, a real classic. Tricks for selecting the perfect paint color? I always think the most important thing is to choose a color you love! It sounds simple, but if you want to create your perfect home, making sure it’s decorated with the patterns, paints, artworks and accessories you love is the best place to start. farrow-ball.com

11ORANGE FEEL

There’s no limit to how often and how much to use your ideal color once you’ve finally found it. So, when San Francisco designer Lauren Ranes and her client stumbled upon the dreamiest shade of citrus they’d ever seen, they didn’t hesitate to introduce it again and again into the family homestead. “The color, Benjamin Moore’s Ravishing Red, is tomato, persimmon and watermelon all rolled into one,” explains Ranes. “It’s a dignified and cheerful shade.” The result is a cohesive color scheme that relies on pattern and print throughout to make it appropriate for each space. Here, in the breakfast room, for example, a charming Schumacher wallpaper behind the shelves and blue-and-white ginger jars lend the dining space off the kitchen the touch of formality it required. laurenranes.com

12

BRIGHT LIGHT Formal doesn’t have to be fussy when it comes to stunning candelabras that are just as handsome during daytime hours as they are when they are all lit up—at least that’s the story Dunes and Duchess is telling with the brand’s coveted four-arm version, available in a variety of colorful finishes. dunesandduchess.com

MODERN CLASSIC

One of color’s most prized properties is being able to bring a fresh, modern perspective to traditional spaces, like it does in this sweet foyer in North Carolina with inspiring architectural detail. Using a palette of soft green and subdued coral, designer Barrie Benson transformed the home’s 1950s bones into a graceful, feminine dream. “I wanted to give a nod to the old without making it feel like one’s grandmother lives here,” says Benson with a laugh. “The palette definitely sets the tone for that. It gives visitors the hint that not everything inside is as conservative as you’d expect from a more formal Southern home.” barriebenson.com

What is your holiday decorating style? I like to combine the natural beauty of pine branches with an elegant aesthetic. You want it to look effortless, comfortable and most of all, inviting. What is your fondest holiday memory? My fondest holiday memory by far is the birth of my youngest daughter, Olivia Noel, on Christmas Eve, 1989. We brought her home on Christmas Day snuggled in a big red felt Christmas stocking made by volunteers at the hospital.

My holiday decorating is constantly evolving, but I always begin with a big, fresh tree for the wonderful pine scent, lots of candles and strings of white lights in the trees outside. Luxe Entertaining

What will you have on your holiday dinner menu this year? We begin with fresh crab cocktails, and I always make a prime rib roast with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, gravy, green beans and peas. What are some of your favorite home accessory holiday gift ideas? The classic Ralph Lauren holiday candles are my favorite hostess gifts to give during the holidays. utfitting a home with layers of vibrant color, lively pattern and rich texture in a way that’s harmonious and not chaotic can be an artful feat. And designer Jay Jeffers is a master at it. The dynamic interiors he created for a couple’s condominium in the Cow Hollow neighborhood are wondrous proof of this. Jeffers’ design is remarkably whimsical, a careful orchestration of elements where the eye is never bored or overwhelmed. “We ended up with a really beautiful mix of things,” Jeffers says. “There’s a lot of drama in the design.” Before Jeffers, who also owns a namesake home furnishings shop in the Tenderloin area, worked his magic on the interiors, the early-20th-century building presented its own magnificence. “It’s spacious and has great architectural bones,” notes the wife. “We moved from Russian Hill to this condo for the views. It overlooks the bay, and you can see panoramic views from the Golden Gate Bridge to Alcatraz.” Though the condo had much to offer, renovations through the years had left it with a disjointed design. So, the couple hired architect Ian Birchall to clarify the layout. “I reconfigured the floor plan to take advantage of the views and get better flow,” he explains. “The top floor was not integrated with the apartment; you had to use an exit stair to access it.” To link the previously disconnected levels, the architect designed a new staircase that leads from a hallway off of the family room to the top floor, which now functions as a multipurpose space with an office, a media room and a guest room. Birchall also transformed a former den and a portion of the foyer into a larger master suite. The new family room, previously the master bedroom, offers expansive water views. “I wanted them to feel more connection to the outdoors, so I designed a Juliet balcony off the family room,” adds the architect. 212 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Once the architectural bones were in place, Jeffers worked on the finish selections, cabinetry and installing new larger moldings throughout. The designer also selected a wide-plank walnut for the floors and to accent the new staircase. “The stairs wrap around an existing brick chimney,” builder John W. Conomos says. “The walnut that we bleached, stained and used for the flooring was used not only on the treads, but also on the walls of the staircase to create a waterfall effect.” Against the revived backdrop, Jeffers was able to appoint the spaces with an expertly concocted mix of furnishings. “My clients weren’t afraid of color,” says the designer, who gave the living room walls a Venetian plaster treatment in robin’s egg blue and selected bright coral window coverings for the entrance stairway. He also filled the wife’s office with pink and cherry tones, creating a kind of livable jewel box. “We sort of went wild in there and did the wallcovering, the chaise lounge, the window treatments and the chair in shades of pink,” Jeffers says. Though the interiors read as colorful, their vibrancy is grounded by a fair amount of neutrals. A taupe sofa that was custom-designed to fit into a corner anchors the family room, while the new top-floor space features mostly creamy beige hues. The kitchen displays new pale gray cabinetry, and a sand-colored stone fire surround creates a sophisticated focal point in the living room. LUXESOURCE.COM / 215

The designer was just as strategic when it came to pattern. “I didn’t use it sparingly, but it’s still very well edited,” he says. “In the living room, for instance, there’s a big ikat print on the rug and a smaller plaid on some of the pillows, but most of the fabrics are solids. I like to do one large dramatic print and then tone it down from there.” Jeffers then added layers of textures. Alpacacovered ottomans lend softness to the living room, and a highly polished table and a lacquered Jiun Ho Collection buffet are both luxuriously shiny and smooth in the dining room. The designer played off the sheen of the furnishings in that space by wrapping the walls with a wood-grain wallcovering by Maya Romanoff. Jeffers juxtaposed opposites when it came to form, too, offsetting fanciful silhouettes with more simple ones. He

hung a massive and ethereal cloud-like chandelier in the dining room above an understated diamond-patterned rug. In the kitchen, he placed Art Deco-style wood bar chairs with curved backs as a foil to the rectilinear forms of the cabinetry. The entire residence displays a rhythmic application of print, color, texture and shape. Where the interiors explode with vitality, they also embrace moments of visual or tactile calm. “Every designer works to find the perfect balance,” Jeffers says. “That happens when elements that have different impacts play off of each other. Things shouldn’t be all the same. There’s no interest or individuality in that.” His clients couldn’t agree more. “Jay blended things seamlessly,” the wife says. “We wanted function and style, and we got it.”

iz Robb has known what she wanted to do with her life since kindergarten. “When I was a kid and got those questionnaires that asked ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ I would always write ‘artist,’ ” says Robb, who would often spend time drawing, making her own dolls and sewing clothes for them. So, perhaps it’s no surprise that she went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fashion design. After working in New York for American Eagle Outfitters, she scored a job with Wisconsin retailer Lands’ End. It was while she was working in women’s sweaters and knits that—through a friend at the company—she was introduced to and began volunteering for the owner of a farm in a rural area outside of Madison. “I learned to care for sheep, harvest their fleece and create beautiful roving and yarn,” she says. “My life transformed during that time.” This experience led her to go back to school to earn a Master of Fine Arts in fibers. Today, working from her Dogpatch studio overlooking the East Bay, Robb can be found expertly coaxing natural materials including cotton, wool and beeswax into her textured wall hangings, weavings and three-dimensional forms. Inspired by the brilliant hues used by such artists as James Turrell and Helen Frankenthaler, Robb integrates pops of bold colors in her tactile works and, whether she’s dyeing wool with indigo, working out a weaving on the loom, or utilizing techniques like wrapping and compressing, she keeps her methods organic. “My creative process often starts with doodling in my sketchbook, and then I explore patterns and relationships threedimensionally utilizing different materials,” she explains. “On the other hand, depending on my mood, I may start throwing around rope or roving to see what unfolds.” Robb, who offers her dynamic pieces through Yonder in Pacifica, recently embarked on a twomonth residency at the Icelandic Textile Center. “I proposed creating three larger-than-life movable sculptures, both on and off the loom, using materials I sourced from the land,” she says. In her closer-to-home experiments, Robb is always trying out new techniques. She has worked with “different materials—paint, plastic, rubber—things that are pretty hard to undo,” says the artist, who has also tested out pouring plaster on her painstakingly woven creations. “Usually, you can kind of unweave and reweave, but with these secondary materials, it’s make it or break it.”

Architect Daniel Piechota designed a cedarand-steel structure, built by David Stocker, to integrate seamlessly with its site within Carmel’s Santa Lucia Preserve. Landscape designer Bernard Trainor created decking that leads to a stairway up to the entrance.

W

ere it not for shadows, there would be no beauty,” wrote Japanese author Junichiro Tanizaki in his sublime essay, In Praise of Shadows. That thought seems perfectly expressed through the interplay of architecture, landscape and natural light in the modern abode architect Daniel Piechota designed for Steve and Dee Dee Kim on an 8-acre parcel in Carmel’s Santa Lucia Preserve. “One of our design priorities,” explains Piechota, “was to maximize views and to define architectural opportunities for showcasing the site’s very best moments of seasonal light and shadow.” After living in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than two decades, the Kims began seeking a more relaxed way of life, and amid the Preserve’s gently rolling hills and oak forests, the empty nesters found what they were looking for. “The main attraction for us was the unique character of the Preserve, its sense of community and its emphasis on nature preservation,” says Steve. To that end, the couple assembled a team including Piechota, designer Susan Schippmann, builder David Stocker and landscape designer Bernard Trainor, who all set out to create a home that would seamlessly integrate with and capture views of the surrounding landscape. In developing a concept for the house, Piechota walked the property with Trainor several times early on in the process. The idea that surfaced was to design the house around two perpendicular axes. One would run between the house and a separate guest wing, and the other would follow a wide outdoor stairway separating the house from the master bedroom. “The axes are the negative space that the house was built around,” Piechota explains. “They were critical to maintain, as they provided the greatest opportunities for the most essential views throughout the home.” Following that idea, Piechota, who worked closely with project designer Cameron Helland, created two separate structures, one holding the public spaces—including the kitchen and the open living and dining areas—and a second for the master suite. A bridge connects the two sections and appears to float above the outdoor stairway, which leads from the lower-level arrival and parking area, up between the two volumes to a central courtyard and the main entrance. Another structure, which contains the guest wing, stands apart from the master suite but still shares a common roof. Pulling the volumes apart “created greater opportunities for framed views, flow, light and shadow, as well as privacy for the master suite,” the architect says. LUXESOURCE.COM / 231

10/7/15 1:26 PM

The careful positioning and the site itself also allowed for different view experiences. The courtyard enjoys a sunny clearing, while an oak grove off the living area “makes it feel like you’re in a tree house,” explains Piechota, adding, “We were aiming to create interesting vignettes looking throughout the house.” Those vignettes range from expansive—such as the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area that capture deep views into the valley—to narrow, as with an opening in the wall of an outdoor sitting area that carefully frames an old-growth oak. “It provides a singular observation within an otherwise open landscape,” notes Piechota. Stocker and his crew clad the structure’s exterior with its distinctive tight-knot cedar siding and cold-rolled reclaimed-steel panels. “The exterior materials were put together with really fine detailing,” says Stocker, “and that’s one of the things that makes this house fabulous.” The organic materials also lend warmth to the modern form and enhance its connection with the landscape. The outdoor connection played an important role in the interiors, as well. “It was very important that the exterior was integrated with the interior,” says Schippmann, who worked with the Kims to incorporate their family pieces and artwork with new designs. instance, anchors the master suite, while the designer had the couple’s tansu chests fitted with new steel bases for the living area. In choosing pieces for that main space, the designer selected a comfortable sofa and chairs by A. Rudin and then covered them with textured linen. “The fabrics and the furniture needed to be able to support the architecture,” she explains. “They couldn’t be so lightweight that they got lost, and they couldn’t be so strong that they became a focal point; there needed to be a balance.” The balance continues outside, where Trainor worked with project designer Ben Langford to ensure a seamless flow between the architecture and the landscape. Designed with openings to leave the mature oaks undisturbed, decking leads to the central stairway, which ascends to the courtyard. “I don’t think you sense how beautiful it’s going to be when you come up the stairs and enter this inner sanctuary with birds, trees, wildflowers and grasses blowing in the wind,” Trainor explains. “There’s a Japanese philosophy of allowing things to unfold slowly rather than

SF_LX7_Sagan_228-243.indd 238

all at once, and that sense of layering is one of the most powerful parts of this project.” When it came to that central courtyard, Trainor let nature be his guide. Crushed gravel and large concrete pavers connect an outdoor sitting area just off of the living area with a hot tub near the guest wing, while simple ornamental grasses and native plants add color and texture. “I start with the idea of regionalism, basically identifying the beauty of the place, and amplifying it,” Trainor explains. “Sometimes a simpler approach allows the existing attributes of the site to sing.” Likewise, Steve and Dee Dee appreciated the integrated approach and collaborative nature that brought forth their new home. “This team really understands and respects each other, and we were great beneficiaries of that experience,” says Steve, noting how pleased he and Dee Dee are with their decision to move to the Preserve, as well as the new house it produced. “This is an empty nest with a vengeance.”

here is something magical that happens when I’m in the studio,” explains sculptor and metalworker Adam P. Gale, who is known for his bespoke furnishings, abstract sculptures and other custom creations. “I allow the dimensional forms to take over, and they just come together. It’s pure creativity.” Making art, after all, is a part of Gale’s DNA. While growing up in London, he learned to sketch from his mother, who is also an artist. “She told me not to overthink when creating abstract forms,” Gale explains. “Just let it happen.” After studying 3D design and ceramics in art school, Gale migrated to San Francisco to work with his grandfather, accomplished sculptor Louis O. Pearson. “I learned about welding techniques, how to handle power tools and sculpt with them, and also how to form and balance a sculpture,” Gale explains. “I spent the last nine years of his life with him.” The experience of making his grandfather’s sculptures honed Gale’s fabrication skills, but it wasn’t until he attended a class at the California College of the Arts that he took up the art form himself. “A teacher asked me to make a 3D model in cardboard of one of my sketches,” explains Gale, “and that’s when the floodgates opened up.” Now, working from his studio in the Mission District, Gale uses many of his grandfather’s tools to cut, roll, weld, twist and hammer metal forms until the right shape coalesces, a process that can take months. “You can’t really make mistakes,

SF_LX7_Gale_244-247.indd 247

because you just adapt them,” Gale explains. “The beauty of dimensional forming is that it evolves from the previous shape.” In addition to his own sculptures—which he creates in steel and casts in bronze in editions of 12—Gale also handforges one-off bespoke commissions for interior designers. “As a fabricator, I never know what custom metalwork job will come my way,” he says of such projects as a Giacometti-inspired coffee table. “I love the anticipation of what’s next.” Many of Gale’s designs are marked by a refined, mirrored finish that he creates using compound chalk and his grandfather’s heavy angle grinder, which is outfitted with thick cotton wheels. “You’re using every part of your body to push into the material to bring out a polish,” Gale explains, comparing the look to liquid metal. “It’s physically very demanding to produce this type of work. It takes a long time, but it’s my way and it’s unique.” It’s also part of a lifelong pursuit, one that has no shortage of motivation. “All of my sketches,” Gale explains, “are screaming out at me to be created.”

“THE BEAUTY OF DIMENSIONAL FORMING IS THAT IT EVOLVES FROM THE PREVIOUS SHAPE.”

hen they were college students, Rick White and his wife, Amy, would take long drives up the northern coast of California together and dream of owning a home there. They felt so connected to the dramatic coastal landscape, with its towering redwoods, and the area’s relaxed community that they made it a goal to live there one day or at least have a second home in the vicinity. Fast-forward about 20 years, and the couple—now part of a family of four— came across a distinctive 1970s waterfront residence in a secluded Mendocino County location. “It was frozen in a time capsule,” says Rick, “but it had such amazing bones.” Captivated by its possibilities, the Whites bought the house and flew in their designer, Salt Lake Citybased Anne-Marie Barton, who also worked on their primary residence in Utah, to check out the 15-acre property and its house, guesthouse and studio. She, too, was immediately smitten, and the team got to work on bringing the home up to date while still honoring its roots. “Upon first glance, my goal was to quietly use the outdoors as the focal point and allow the interiors to breathe and contribute to the warmth and naturalness of the surroundings,” says Barton. “The way we created meaning out of the property was to relate back to the heritage of the home and the integrity of that era.” And so, a design approach was born: a mingling of earthy, natural materials inspired by the surroundings integrated within a sensitive renovation that pays homage to some of the hallmarks of 1970s design. “The ’70s represented a time we all remembered and in some ways wished to return to,” says Barton. “Bringing that flavor further forward was my job.” Aided by architect Robert Schlosser—who executed the drawings for Barton’s plans and handled the engineering work and permits—Barton initiated an extensive renovation carried out by builder Ishvi Aum. The structure’s prominent concrete fireplaces were retained because they conveyed an “earthy, natural Bohemian vibe,” says the designer, but she had the cold tile floors replaced with the warmth of white oak and then stained them a soft gray. Barton also selected similar hushed tones for the kitchen cabinetry that she custom-designed and for the original beamed ceiling, which was stripped of its existing orange hue. The muted shades “create a sense of calm, like the ocean view,” explains Barton, who punctuated the sophisticated palette of soft grays and neutrals with bursts of turquoise and ocean blue. The resulting combination helped to create the quiet atmosphere the couple were after. “My wife and I both work in industries that can be very loud,” says Rick, who works in tech; while Amy owns a chain of fitness clubs. “We wanted a place that could be an escape.” Building off the organic backdrop, Barton hung an eyecatching driftwood light fixture in the great room, and, in a nod to the ocean locale, used a giant clamshell as a sink

basin in one of the powder rooms. “The home needed to have a light and playful feel to it,” she says. “It’s a vacation house, so there’s a sense of nontraditional living in the way the home’s been appointed.” When it came to the great room’s prominent pieces, however, Barton selected an upholstered sofa, chaise and chair, all by Verellen, that are “very quiet and comfortable and scaled very large,” she notes. These classic designs serve as a counterpoint to other more whimsical pieces, such as the rattan swing chair in the master bedroom. Barton hung the chair—which lends an unmistakably ’70s vibe—from a specific point in the corner so it faces the floor-to-ceiling windows and appears to be suspended from a tree branch outside. In addition, to bring the bed closer to that view, Barton designed a freestanding wall that acts as a headboard and then hung a triptych by Jill Barton created especially for that spot. “The idea of having things craftsman-made was also a major theme in the house,” Barton says. To that end, she collaborated closely with Aum to design a driftwood railing along a stairway to the second floor. Aum scoured the local beaches with his family to find pieces made from old-growth redwood roots “that would be really solid and polish up nicely,” he explains. Making the railing involved “some tricky craftsmanship,” he adds, “but we do a lot of log and timber work, and this was similar to that process.” Other elements, including the wire-brushed oak used throughout and the artful organic-looking light fixtures contribute to the house’s hand-wrought feel. “The essence of handmade fills the home,” says Barton. “There’s no macramé, but it wouldn’t have surprised anyone if there was.” Those thoughtful touches set against the soothing palette and captivating views all work to create a retreat that is both sophisticated and calm. “We knew AnneMarie could design something that was comfortable and very relaxing,” Rick says of the house and the feeling it encourages. “We turn off the work phones, close the computers and just escape.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 251

Barton kept the great room’s existing concrete fireplace and put in new oak flooring by Exquisite Surfaces. She hung a Four Hands light fixture above a wood-and-chrome Zentique coffee table and selected comfortable upholstered Verellen seating. The rug is by Vaheed Taheri.

Right: To avoid obscuring the view in the breakfast area, the designer chose furnishings with a visual lightness. Woven chairs by McGuire encircle a custom table fabricated by Bradshaw Design. The pendant is by Selamat Designs. Opposite: Barton created an outdoor spot to take in and enjoy the site’s dramatic coastline views by positioning a pair of Zeya chairs by Janus et Cie on a small terrace off the breakfast area.

Above: A Lee Industries sleeper sofa provides additional sleeping space in the one-bedroom guesthouse. Overhead, the wood ceiling—once stained orange—was refinished to work within the new muted palette. The painting is by Jill Barton. Left: In the guesthouse, textured bar chairs pull up to a bleached pine table, all by Four Hands, while a light fixture from South of Market in Atlanta hangs above. The Wynn armchair is by Bernhardt, and the draperies are made with a Galbraith & Paul textile.

To take advantage of the views from the master bedroom, the designer had a freestanding headboard wall created to move the custom Verellen bed closer to the windows, near which she hung a Serena & Lily rattan chair. The chandelier is by Arteriors.

“THERE’S ONLY ONE THING IN LIFE, AND THAT’S THE CONTINUAL RENEWAL OF INSPIRATION,” SAID EMPRESS OF FASHION DIANA VREELAND. INDEED, INSPIRATION IS THE SECRET SAUCE TO ALL GREAT DESIGN MOMENTS AND THE VERY FOUNDATION FOR WHAT WE HAVE CREATED ISSUE TO ISSUE OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS. IN CELEBRATION OF LUXE INTERIORS + DESIGN’S DECADE OF DESIGN, WE LOOK TO THE CUSTOMARY MEMENTO FOR THIS LANDMARK ANNIVERSARY— TIN—AND BRING IT TO LIFE WITH A TOUCH OF PANACHE.
