seating honed Scandinavian talents Anna Karlsson and Katarina Ivarsson founded their Stockholm-based practice, Boris Design Studio, in 2009 with a mission to promote sustainability via product and identity design and research. Their latest such effort is the amiable and versatile Companion series for Honed, a maker based in Hong Kong (where Karlsson and Ivarsson have a second office). The sofa’s Windsor-style wax-finish ash frame, a trim 87 inches long and 35 deep, easily seats three—or sleeps one when in bed mode. Cushions are maneuverable; just shift one of the smaller back pads to the accompanying table/bench for extra seating. honed.com.hk

pode The upstart Dutch brand, helmed by husband-wife entrepreneurs Roderick and Claire Vos—an industrial and textile designer respectively—unveils Ziggy. Masterminded by German designer Pascal Bosetti, the versatile seating program is a case study of modularity: The two-armed sofa, sofa with footstool, and corner units can be used solo or grouped into angular arrangements that nonetheless retain the individual elements’ soft lines and charm. Akimbo metal feet support subtly curved cushions, offered in dozens of fabrics, including Kvadrat viscoses and wools as well as a spectrum of leather. Coordinating rectangular or round oak trays are the perfect spot for a drink, a novel, or the remote control. pode.eu

ferrari While gazing at an ashtray during a meeting, designers Alessio Ferrari and Alberto Agnoletto wondered aloud what it might be like to sit inside it. This unexpected inspiration sparked the Unidentified Furniture Object—U.F.O. for short. The handmade composite-fiber seat spans a generous 69 inches and rests on a single point, liberating it to rotate 360 degrees. Hand-fit layers of foam cushioning create superior ergonomics; the padding is covered in high-quality, respectfully produced primo fiore leather (offered in myriad color combinations). A limited-edition carbonfiber version is also available, each piece marked with a handcrafted gold plate. ferrarigroupsrl.it

TEKTONIK IN WHITBY INNTIL IN WIGAN
“Sleek sofas in dizzyingly patterned prints dazzle the eye”
missoni The legendary Italian fashion/design house has never shied away from strong shapes and bright, bold patterns, and its latest introductions are no exception. To wit: Tektonik, a sculptural modular sectional by Cranbrook-trained Norwegian designer Bendik Torvin. Oh-so-slightly rounded corners soften the crisp edges of this languorous seat, which looks particularly fetching dressed in Whitby, a degradé-stripe linen from the brand’s new Panorama textile collection. Torvin also envisioned Inntil, a sinuous sofa system available in twoand three-seat iterations, both with a single cushion extending across the back. (It’s shown here in the Waterford, embroidered with micro-chevrons, and flame-pattern Wigan, both jacquard-wovens.) And the Nap series— encompassing sofa, armchair, chaise, poufs, and arm units—is equally at home indoors or out, thanks to a polyurethane-foam-padded plywood frame that can be dressed in fabrics like Winchester, a reversible jacquard check from the Dancing Flowers collection, or in any water- and stain-proof textile from the Missoni line. All three designs have removable covers. missonihome.com INNTIL IN WIGAN

jupiter 10 Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke pioneered digitally printed fabrics in the mid-aughts; in fact, a robe they designed for their London fashion label Basso & Brooke is the first such garment to join the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute permanent collection, in 2006. From paisleys to psychedelic mash-ups, the pair know their way around pattern design. Now, with their upstart wall covering brand, Jupiter 10, Basso and Brooke bring their sartorial sensibility to modernist-inflected nonwovens. Their third collection, Stripe, celebrates the age-old linear motif. The 18 offerings, including blocky Keiko, are 20 ½ inches wide by 11 yards long and pair geometrics with retro colorways in an inventive mix worthy of the designers’ fashion legacy. jupiter10.com

BETHAN LAURA WOOD
moroso A joint project between the Italian furniture company, British designer Bethan Laura Wood, and Lombardy textile mill Limonta, Mono Mania Mexico is a vibrant collection of upholstery jacquards inspired by Wood’s first travels in Central America. Savoring the colors, patterns, and textures that make up the region’s exuberant palette, Wood distilled her sensory experience down to an obsession with the modernist stainedglass windows of the New Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City—a 1970s explosion of jewel tones and abstract motifs. The 18-piece cotton collection, which also references the craft of traditional Otomi embroidery, comprises patterns such as Disco and Calipso in a rainbow of multihue and monochrome colorways. Currently offered exclusively as upholstery options for Moroso seating, the fabrics will be available by the yard soon. morosousa.com 56

“We were inspired by a Dior coat” —Dorothy Cosonas BOUNCE
knoll textiles
The starting point for Contour, the latest collection by creative director Dorothy Cosonas, was a Dior couture coat with a dotty black-and-white print contained within a precise grid. Bounce, a sheer drapery fabric, explodes that same pattern’s scale and renders the spheres painterly. Digital printing allows for mottled, almost tie-dyed watercolor pigment shifts. And a crushed effect gives the Trevira CS polyester fiber texture and surface interest. Bounce comes in six colorways—from purple to blue-andorange—and is double-width, running 122 inches across and high. knolltextiles.com

Among the evocatively named patterns are Eye See You, a cheerfully voyeuristic constellation of wideopen peepers; Dazzle, a prismatic jigsaw of variegated stripes; Shift, offset rows of delicately drawn lines; and Wiggle Room, column after column of broad-brush squiggles. California’s Laguna Beach was once a favorite getaway for stars like Bette Davis and Bing Crosby; more recently, the town has become a weekend destination for techies who crash in its burgeoning luxury hospitality enclaves. Among them: 1930s motor lodge turned mod-styled hideaway Hotel Joaquin, designed by Studio Robert McKinley and featuring chic tapestries inspired by coastal landscapes. Those same compositions are now being produced in a limited edition as the Robert McKinley for Aelfie collection. Six designs offer vistas of suns rising or sinking into the ocean or hovering off a distant coast; other options include a placid beach and a sharp-angled balcony with a view. The 44-by-56-inch designs—combining two types of flatweave and hand knotting—are crafted in India of 100 percent wool. aelfie.com

KIKU
“Hand-painted details adorn two highly decorative silk wall coverings” FIREBIRD
fromental The British Aesthetic movement of the late 19th-century owed much inspiration to Japanese art. That cross-cultural synthesis sparked Fromental’s modern-day Kiku (which translates to chrysanthemum), a paper-backed silk wall covering abloom with handpainted and screen-printed petals. Firebird derives from a different flower: a striking rose pattern the designers spotted on a midcentury-era silk scarf. Its foreground blossoms lie atop an undergrowth of tangled thorns and leaves creating a design effusive with energy. Each wall covering is handmade to order in any colorway, the pattern carefully tailored to the dimensions of its destined space. Supply elevations and floor plans, and the Londonbased company will also situate the design and panel seams for best fit. fromental.co.uk

élitis Pop is a collection of bold, exuberant geometric prints (and an overblown floral) originating from two imaginative sources: vintage ceramics and back-inthe-day swimwear. When applied to fire-resistant vinyl the patterns make ideal wall coverings for retro-inflected hospitality projects—or anywhere that needs a little pizazz. The sinuous op-art half-circles of Mykonos come in five vibrant colorways, all in combinations
of three hues. But superlative graphics are only part of the pattern’s charm. Inspired by a snapshot of a weaving loom, the vinyl also has the textured look of end-on-end cloth, a woven fabric with a lightly heathered effect created by alternating light and dark warp and weft threads. elitis.fr

Softer and more inviting than mesh and offering the benefit of omni-directional (versus two-way) stretch, knits allow customization of everything from pattern and stitching density to degree of breathability. “Knits remove design constraints, opening the door to create bespoke pieces for clients through choice of yarn fiber, color, stitching, and knit structure,” affirms Haworth principal designer Liz Johnson. Fortune favors the bold—or so goes the Latin proverb. It’s a familiar concept for the self-described glass artisan, whose atelier and workshop in Vicenza, Italy, fuels a steady stream of audacious pieces. In fact, he even borrowed the maxim as the name of his new console, Audentes Fortuna Iuvat. Crestani plies his signature trade between two slabs of Carrara marble, assembling a cluster of crisscrossed borosilicate glass rods. Blowtorching softens the supports at the final stage, allowing Crestani to shape them in a delicate give-and-take between heating and cooling—a technique he first employed for his lighting designs. The piece stands 35 ¾ inches high, 59 wide, and 11 ¾ deep. Through Bernd Goeckler. bgoecklerantiques.com

alpi Last fall at the manufacturer’s Milan showroom, longtime collaborator, the late Alessandro Mendini, unveiled “Tre Primitivi,” a conceptual exhibition showcasing two re-released veneer patterns—Pointillisme COL and Pointillisme B/N—designed by Atelier Mendini and artist Alex Mocika in 1991. The multicolored wood-composite sheets pay homage to what Mendini called the “infinite agglomerate of miniscule brushstrokes” made famous by artists like Georges Seurat. To properly re-introduce the veneers, Mendini conceived three abstract cabinets (he referred to them as “archaic forms”) inspired by Italo Calvino’s Cosmicomics short stories about a primordial earth rocked with geological instability. Qfwfq and Ayl are named for specific characters, while a third, Luna & Sole, represents the contrast between two types of radiant energy. alpi.it

CONTRAST IN MEDITERRANEAN
tortuga
INSET: FLOOR KNAAPEN
Contrast comes naturally to BCXSY, the interdisciplinary Amsterdam design cooperative fronted by Israel-born Boaz Cohen and Japanese native Sayaka Yamamoto. But the juxtaposition in their Contrast tables isn’t of cultures, it’s of shapes. Three timeless geometric elements— circle, triangle, rectangle—are joined without tools, the components simply sliding into place. Birch-plywood cores make the assembly light enough to carry but stable enough to double as a stool. The three versions each utilize a different combination of high-pressure laminate finishes. For example, the Mediterranean edition blends lightly textured stone, emerald, and brushed brass facsimiles, unified by matte-black edging. Choose from two sizes: 14 inches across and 20 high, and 20 ½ by 22 inches. tortugaliving.com

TOM FAULKNER
designer Tom Faulkner product Lily recap Known predominantly for metalwork, the Londonbased designer/fabricator has steadily broadened his material palette. Now cast glass joins the mix with a family of tables modeled after the waterborne flower’s pads. Hand-cast in a family-run workshop in Venice using timehonored Murano techniques, the tops come in six colors— green, pink, blue, yellow, orange, and brown—that Faulkner says resemble “jewels or boiled sweets.” The organic contours are a foil for the perfectly round, anthracite-finish steel base below. Equally suitable for use as a side table or bunched together in cocktail formation, the design is available in three sizes: 9 inches across and 23 ½ high, 11 by 20 inches, and 13 by 17. tomfaulkner.co.uk

office buzzi space Alain Gilles embraces the ever-blurring boundary between architecture and interior design with BuzziBracks. The modular partitions establish micro-environments that counteract the dynamism—read: distractions—of open-plan workplaces. A freestanding powder-coated steel frame (in seven colors) accepts a variety of polyester fabrics, transparent or opaque depending on the privacy level desired, including noisereducing Kvadrat curtains. “BuzziBracks acts as a visual and acoustic shield while remaining lightweight,” Gilles explains. What’s underfoot is obviously front and center at the flooring maker’s new Cartersville, Georgia, workspace, including durable, eco-minded options from the Shaw Contract and Patcraft brands. Inside Shapes carpet tiles layer over Resurgence engineered hardwood in the lobby, while Rethink vinyl tiles pave the Social Hub. But forward-thinking flooring is hardly the only standout of the three-story, 67,000-square-foot Create Centre, designed in collaboration with Gensler’s Atlanta office. Note the zinc-paneled facade’s painted-steel brise-soleil, in an orange hue reminiscent of Georgia red clay on nearby Ladds Mountain. Other natural wonders include a rain garden with retention pond and a community garden in which employees grow and harvest lunch fixings to eat on the outdoor patio. A sculptural staircase leads from the airy ground-level lobby to the second- and third-floor workspaces, outfitted with individual desks, huddle and heads-down areas, libraries, showrooms, and team and project rooms. “The design allows for collaboration, innovation, and focus,” says VP of commercial marketing and product development Brenda Knowles. “Our people are doing their very best work in this space.” shawcontract.com

“The starting point for this collection was the idea of shadows never being black or gray, but full of color and geometry” —Mathias Hahn
nanimarquina When the company tapped German-born Mathias Hahn, a product design graduate of London’s Royal College of Art, to create a carpet collection, he ended up devising a whole new way to weave. The novel technique is the foundation of Capas’s pentagonal design, its tonal shifts distributed within the kilim structure. Colors of the warp and weft mix to form gradated expanses, resulting in a surprisingly rich depth of field achieved without adding weight to the rug. Capas is 100 percent Afghan wool, hand-spun and -loomed in two sizes—79 by 118 and 67 by 94 inches— and five colorways. nanimarquina.com

Twill Weave and Fractured Plaid, both 24”x 24” modular tiles, are abstract translations of patterns with a soft tip-shear, giving them a rich high end feel to any space. The Diversity collection of woven vinyl is a fine testament to both the brand’s heritage and its future focus. London Design Week was a particularly happening event for owner Esti Barnes, who spun back the clock to the city’s Carnaby Street days with a pair of modish debuts. Aiming to evoke “the polka dots and frills of the Swinging Sixties,” Barnes embraced the former with Boogie Boogie, which is hand-tufted of New Zealand wool. Springy Fusili features the same fiber and construction, save for an added trace of silk. Originally conceived as runners for halls or stairs, where the elongated grounds annunciate the threedimensional effect simulated by subtle color gradations, the made-to-order patterns can also be rendered as area rugs in custom sizes. topfloorrugs.com

Since then, he’s relocated the headquarters from New Jersey to New York and transcended traditionalism with new-production offerings nodding to Scandinavia and now, with the Mid-Century Modern collection, the boundless font of inspiration to be found in the postwar era. Encompassing 35 patterns (with more to come), the series honors 1950s textile designs by MCM icons like Lucienne Day, Cuno Fischer, and Robert Stewart. The polychromatic geometrics, puzzling expanses of fit-together figurations, and simpler repetitions of classic shapes like teardrops are rendered of wool and silk in standard sizes including 8 by 10 and 12 by 15 feet— though dimensions and coloration are fully customizable. rugandkilim.com

michele varian A decidedly modern take on the mobile-style light fixture, Fleurish was influenced by a bevy of flora, including honeysuckles, thorns, and the twisted trunks of ancient olive trees. Constructed in Varian’s New York studio of unfinished solid brass, the chandelier has a kinetic form meant to move like a plant blowing in the wind. (Rod placement is fixed to ensure balance, and each arm rotates individually.) Tiered sculptures in brass and hand-blown glass hang from the arms like ripe fruit; sprays of crystal burst forth like seeds released from pods. The standard size encompasses six E12 LED bulbs and extends 68 inches across, although arm length can be customized. michelevarian.com

While participating in a panel discussion, interior designer Alison Rose showed a photo of one of her residential projects featuring a custom configuration of the manufacturer’s tiles. In the crowd was founder and CEO Nancy Epstein, who approached Rose after the presentation and floated the idea of a collaboration. That proposal culminated in Euclid, named for the father of geometry. Rose developed the design by studying historic tapestries under a microscope, then reinterpreting the sequence of fibers as a geometric mosaic. Four water-jet-cut shapes in a variety of classical marbles, from Lilac to Cipollino, can be arranged in virtually endless configurations. “It’s basically my alphabet: set units designed to work together in an infinite number of ways,” says Rose. Individual tiles are approximately 5½ or 10 inches square, while pre-mixed sheets measure about 11 or 20 inches square. artistictile.com

COVE
The Miami Design District heats up with the arrival of a new showroom by the kitchen giant, with interiors by Zingg Design. Displaying more than 134 products across the three brands, the 7,500-square-foot location, in a building by Touzet Studio, was selected because of the neighborhood’s reputation for supporting “great design and culinary experiences,” explains president and CEO Jim Bakke. The center of it all is a 780-squarefoot demonstration kitchen that allows guests to experience 20 appliances firsthand. The lounge, wine room, and rooftop terrace confer a hospitality-esque vibe, while a sitespecific mural by Miami artist Douglas Hoekzema injects color. Among the new models showcased: the Cove dishwasher with adjustable racks and Wolf’s 24-inch Speed oven, which combines microwave, convection, and broil technologies within a compact footprint. subzero-wolf.com

ANTONIO RODRIGUEZ
MATTEO THUN
“It’s an homage to the essence and beauty of water: transparent, fresh, and colorful.” That’s how Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez describe Nice, a collection for which “colorful” is indeed the operative word. The Matteo Thun & Partners cohort paired brass faucets with handles of what appears to be integrally pigmented acrylic, but the effect is actually simulated by a 4-millimeter strip of colored film at the bottom that telegraphs through the clear body. The degree of saturation shifts depending on the viewing angles and distance, creating enigmatic optical displays. Available in red, black, blue, turquoise, green, and white, the collection includes three-hole deck- and wall-mounted versions, a single-hole deck-mounted edition in two heights, and a shower set with hand spray. fantiniusa.com

MICHAEL AND CHRISTIAN SIEGER
A collaboration with Sieger Design, Meta broke new ground when it was released in 1995. Now, the iconic single-lever brass mixer gets reduced to its barest essence—and refined. Updates to the classic include an integrated aerator and finer spout. Meta Slim sports a significantly thinner lever. And Meta Pure adds a progressive cartridge with a rotary control allowing the user to gently click between cold, warm, and hot. The new mechanism is environmentally friendly and economical: Since cold water is distributed first, no energy is wasted heating up unnecessary hot water. But the story doesn’t stop there. BOTTOM: JONAS BIE
Aiming to deliver an enduring design concept to the Danish bath brand, architect Bjarke Ingels huddled with BIG Ideas, his firm’s technology-driven special projects division. Those tête-à-têtes spawned Pebble, a range of accessories defined as the fusion of “bulbous tactility and pure practicality.” Elliptical forms unify the collection, encompassing a soap dispenser, shower shelf, towel rail, toilet brush, toilet tissue holder, coat hook, lever handle, key escutcheon, and thumb turn. The lever is equipped with an exclusive ball-bearing system to boost durability (hence the 20-year warranty). Equally suitable for commercial, residential, and hospitality projects, the components are handcrafted of steel with at least 50 percent recycled content in the manufacturer’s Lithuania factory. The brand’s art directors—and Garcia Cumini founders—Cinzia Cumini and Vicente García Jiménez put the focus on finishes with Unit, a collection of slenderlegged kitchen elements reminiscent of industrial furniture. To wit: The cabinetry is offered in rich-red Rosso Jaipur Fenix laminate, metallic lacquers, and (for those seeking a moody, speakeasy effect) smoked glass backed with translucent linen fabric. For countertops, choose from luxe, au courant specs such as Grigio Amani and Nero Marquina marbles or ultra-thin matte steel. The decorative wood panel specialist has, after six decades, finally met its match. Marotte x Farouche, a collaboration between the French manufacturer and artist/ cabinetmaker Anna Le Corno of Farouche, comprises four patterns: botanical Limòn; Vertigo, in which dizzying lines interrupt rows of hexagons; Typha, a tribute to the blades of the titular cattail; and building block–like Atoma. The pattern is laser-cut into the veneer—hand-stitched by Le Corno herself—which is bolstered by an MDF substrate in gray, natural, or black. Available in a dozen wood varietes, including deep-black European ash, pastel oak Aurea, and macassar ebony, panels come standard at 4 feet wide and 8 or 10 long, and can also be fabricated in custom dimensions. marotte.fr

turf Open-plan educational, institutional, and office spaces certainly have their advantages, but one problem threatens to drown them out: the echo of voices and other noises bouncing off the walls. Luckily, Turf’s product engineering manager Dustin Headley and his team have devised a series of baffles to soak up the roar. Parametric Switchblade, in three styles and 11 profiles, attaches via magnets to a tee grid, allowing for custom configurations. Torrent is more organic, with swoops resembling fishes or ribs, in sizes ranging from 23 ¾ to 119 inches long. Like foothills of a distant mountain range, angular Ridge looks especially impressive when installed in an ombré gradient. furniture for Nilufar and Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery, rugs for Moooi, and tabletop items for Vista Alegre. But the Beirutbased duo’s most recent creation is decidedly more utilitarian: elevator interiors. David/Nicolas first worked with Lebanese brand Mitsulift two years ago to create a custom design for a private client; the manufacturer later invited the pair to devise minimalist, modern designs for inclusion in its product line. A round mirror backdropped by ribbed French oak or walnut is the focal point of DN1, with laminate wainscoting (available in four colors) and a travertine floor. Raffoul describes it as a “retro-futuristic time machine.” DN2 is, the designers admit, more “corporate” but also more complexly geometric, with a rectangular mirror set into brushed stainless-steel panels. French oak millwork plus four spotlights uphold the sophisticated vibe. mitsulift.com

caliber appliances “What if a grill brought people together like a family table?” —David Rockwell
No shrinking wallflower, this: The Rockwell by Caliber social grill allows for the convivial 360-degree flow of partygoers around all sides, courtesy of a proprietary hood that disappears under the cooktop (without hitting the gas tank below). The clever design is a collaboration with Rockwell Group founder and hospitality guru David Rockwell, who was inspired by friends gathering around a campfire or dinner table. The freestanding model features a cascading, tablecloth-like top crafted of aircraft-grade aluminum and powder-coated red, black, or turquoise. Standing on a hand-rubbed Brazilian cherry or stainless-steel base, the unit measures 60 inches wide by 30 deep. The built-in version, meanwhile, comes standard in 304-grade stainless steel. As for firepower, both models are equipped with 20,000-BTU Crossflame burners. For added pizazz, upgrade to wood handles or specify a custom RAL color. caliberappliances.com

To say these tabletops look like artists’ canvases isn’t far off the mark: The layered geometric graphics are a digitized take on Jonathan Lawes’s one-off screen prints. Applied to the Gandia Blasco brand’s Mona pedestal table, the design vivifies any location—just choose a circular or square top, 27 ½ or 31 ½ inches across, in red or pink colorway. The 28-inch-high base is thermo-lacquered galvanized steel and the top is waterproof phenolic plate, meaning Mona is built to withstand practically any weather conditions.

carl hansen & søn When Danish architect Bodil Kjær designed her now-classic Indoor-Outdoor series in 1959, she did so with her environment in mind. “I’ve always maintained that the largest space you have is outdoors,” the octogenarian icon says. “That’s why outdoor furniture has to be quite big: It has to fill a big space.” Her resulting collection of Cubistinspired forms would become a popular fixture indoors as well as out. Now, Carl Hansen & Søn relaunches Kjær’s versatile line in solid teak, with optional cushions in weather-resistant Sunbrella fabric. The complete set of mortised, slatted shapes comprises a lounge chair, loveseat, swing sofa, sun bed, side table, and dining table plus chairs, each piece manifesting the understated elegance that has long defined Scandinavian design. carlhansen.com INDOOR-OUTDOOR
