A unique combination of luxury and privacy
The Community 2600 sits on the south shore of Lake Travis, at the heart of one of Austin’s most desirable areas. The property includes nearly 50 acres, with more than 1,000 feet of deep waterline along the lakefront and views of the hill country. Now is the time for you to have access to this limited and exclusive property within a gated community of just four contemporary homes. 2600 offers a fresh perspective on luxury lakeside living, one that is absolutely and emphatically unlike anything else on the market today. The Homes Two homes available for move-in, and one remaining to be built by Foursquare Builders. Each has been designed to fit carefully on the land and within the community, and each 11 plus acre home site has been chosen to maximize both views and privacy. Schematic designs and specifications are complete on each of these two contemporary homes and can be tailored to suite your distinct style and desired features. This will dramatically shorten the time until you move-in, while still allowing customization to match your needs and wishes.

Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting. “The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic. Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”
Designer Matthew Patrick Smyth Winner of the 2011 Stars of Design Award for Interior Design

Set against picturesque views, a home near Houston offers its owners comfort with welcoming furnishings and antiques.
An Austin residence is revitalized to suit an empty-nester couple, and takes advantage of the stunning lakeside vistas.
A modern exterior juxtaposes with a cozy interior palette in this transitional Dallas abode that connects to the outdoors.
Despite a downsize, functionality was key for an Austin house that allows each family member a space to call their own.

BEAUTY MARK

oes beauty matter? I recently listened as a designerfriend reflected on the perception by many that decorative pursuits can feel like a frivolous concern. Certainly practical matters of daily life—the commute
to the office, the contract awaiting signature, the phone call you need to return—can eclipse our quotidian attentiveness to art and beauty. With designer Jamie Drake at the Flexform showroom in New York.
I would encourage, however, that each of us make time to thoughtfully observe and pursue beauty, art and design in earnest, and tend to it often. Beauty, as expressed through architecture and design, has a profound impact on our consciousness. Structures and façades, space planning, landscaping, interiors, furniture, lighting, and art offer up a daily dose of inspiration, inciting emotions and reactions: delight and

awe, uneasiness and disquiet, serenity, wonderment, and reflection. Beauty lurks everywhere: in the minutiae of a peony petal and in the grand force of Frank Gehry’s DZ Bank in Berlin, which I stood in awe of earlier this year. Far from being flippant, beauty is an expression of creativity that grounds us. We should care deeply about the placement of a chair, the color of a wall, the pattern repeat of a textile. COASTAL CHIC Dynamic shapes and strong lines unite to present Foreside Home and Garden’s latest selection of outdoor furniture and accents. Originally established in the early 1990s by husband-and-wife team Claire and Mark Woodsum, the brand continues to evoke a charming coastal aesthetic by virtue of a mixed palette of materials and textures. Featured here, the recently introduced Market display table imbues a classic industrial style that functions as a unique addition to any outdoor setting. foresidehomeandgarden.com

It’s not unusual for Austin-based botanical designer Monique Capanelli to envision an arrangement of vibrant succulents and cacti only to juxtapose them with a sprinkling of seashells and a pair of antlers in a bold shade of fuchsia. What’s more, the arrangement isn’t likely to be set within a ceramic vessel; it’s more expected to be displayed within a coffee table she designed herself. “I revel in creating an element of surprise,” says Capanelli, whose arresting offerings range from such pieces of “living furniture” to green walls and entire landscaped gardens. “My work is about achieving a balance with imbalance, and finding the innate beauty conjured by this asymmetry.” articulturedesigns.com

Upon developing a plan for the revamp of a stately Houston garden—originally designed by illustrious landscape architect C.C. Pat Fleming—architects William Curtis and Russell Windham elected to build upon its traditional layout. “We chose to infuse the space with structural plantings such as spherical boxwood hedges, which soften the presence of several new buildings that we added to the property,” notes Windham. The team also elected to retain the site’s original magnolias, as well as the majority of Fleming’s brick and bluestone hardscape “to harness the area’s storied charm.” curtisandwindham.com

SITE SPECIFIC For Austin landscape designer Dylan Crain Robertson, visualizing the exterior plan for this Westlake abode was a calculated process. While the architecture of a home often plays a roll in the landscape design, this layout took that common tenet to another level, as the foliage was literally planted within the property’s façade. “We took our cues from the rugged, inherent allure of the site,” says Crain Robertson, who nestled the home into its environment by virtue of such stylized components as ferns, aloes and locally quarried stones. “My goal was to extend the interior sensibilities outside while echoing the captivating appeal of the property’s Hill Country aesthetic.” d-crain.com
Since its 2001 launch, Hive—co-founded by Philippinesbased product visionary Kenneth Cobonpue—has been offering a choice selection of outdoor furnishings and décor from an exclusive register of artists. Of particular note is the Kai lantern, shown, a delicately shaped fixture inspired by the simplicity of a bamboo roll-up screen. Composed of a multilayered shade oriented in an abstract pattern, Kai manifests an alluring glow that is heightened when flanked by additional fixtures. designbyhive.com

Inspired by understated simplicity, classic design and strength of material, the chic set—which Barry designated Bowmont for a tree-lined street in Beverly Hills—encompasses 20 lounge and dining pieces in powder-coated aluminum and woven resin and two ceramic accent pieces. Who is your biggest inspiration when it comes to landscapes? On a local level, James deGrey David is particularly inspirational; the diverse nature of his gardens is remarkable. Is there anything in particular that you are working on right now? I’m excited to be working on a project in southern Colorado that encompasses architecture and interiors along with construction management. It’s an entirely new set of rules. What is your favorite plant material to design with? Trees. They tie spaces together so fluidly. From evergreens to maples to acacias, you just can’t go wrong.

The landscape design of this Dallas project— which embraces an elegantly appointed garden and courtyard—was strongly influenced by the architecture’s Tuscan Mediterranean style and the site’s existing topography. “When we first surveyed the property, we were pleased to find several large live oaks, which now frame the residence and provide the garden with shade,” says Carrollton landscape architect Harold Leidner. To devise the tony layout, Leidner engaged a vibrant palette of azaleas, hydrangea and Italian cypress trees combined with a striking travertine hardscape. “What amounted was an exterior layout that champions the aesthetic of the home and its natural surroundings,” he says. haroldleidner.com
Positioned within the realm of a 252-acre stretch of marshland in Orange—Texas’ easternmost city—Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center is a haven for discovery and enrichment. Highlights of the property include seven distinctive botanical gardens, four sculpture rooms and a Victorian-style greenhouse that was initially built in 1917. An additional focal point is the Pond of the Blue Moon, shown, where upwards of 41 varieties of azaleas border an enchanting water feature. shangrilagardens.org

garden luxury This season, Michael Taylor Designs introduces Arcadia, a posh array of outdoor furnishings envisioned by designers Andrew Fisher and Jeffry Weisman. Garnering inspiration from nature, Fisher and Weisman outfitted the featured lounge chair with organically shaped legs accented by hollyhock leaves. “The collection speaks to the garden setting it was designed to enhance,” notes Fisher, who adds that the generous scale and sumptuous cushioning were necessary in order to ensure an elevated level of comfort. michaeltaylordesigns.com

VERTICAL THINKING Debbie Kotalic visits Worth Avenue often. But, she’s not in Palm Beach to admire the fashion-centric vitrines. There’s a much more visually stimulating display that inspires passersby to stop, shoot a pic on their iPhone, and ponder the site of an 840-square-foot vertical garden. “It’s a very tight abstract that both counters and complements the avenue’s sprawling bougainvillea and breezy palm trees,” Kotalic says. “Everyone sees something different. It’s similar to when people look at the same cloud. What they envision isn’t necessarily the same.” A landscape designer for green wall specialists GSky Plant Systems, Kotalic is intimately familiar with every aspect of this wall. After all, she devised it, and even included a hidden optical illusion within its leafy façade. “I’ll give you a hint...it’s very Palm Beach,” teases Kotalic, who collaborated with the Garden Club of Palm Beach and landscape architecture firm Sanchez & Maddux. Behind its allure lies an intricate network of irrigation and maintenance systems that ensures the installation retains its wonder. As for the Rorschach-inspired camouflage, further gaze reveals (at least to us) a wind-bent palm tree, swaying fronds and all.

MAGNATE O F TA S T E THE VISIONARY PRESIDENT OF RALPH PUCCI INTERNATIONAL DISCUSSES THE INSPIRATIONAL POWER OF ART, THE BEAUTY FOUND IN IMPERFECTIONS AND THE NEXT BIG THING. WHEN I JOINED THE family mannequin business in 1976, all the other companies were doing very ladylike and elegant mannequins. So we sprayed ours out in high-gloss colors. We went where someone else wasn’t, and that became the design philosophy of Pucci from there on out. I LOOK FOR PIECES
that are unique, simple, timeless and, most importantly, that have soul. I don’t look for furniture that’s been mass-produced; I look for special pieces that have been touched by a great artisan and a creative mind. FINISHES ARE REALLY

For our Hervé Van der Straeten show in New York, we chose Billie Holiday and Count Basie. For Ruben Toledo in Los Angeles, we had a little fun and played early Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Music is the exclamation point to the mood we’re trying to create. I’VE BEEN WORKING with Vicente

A WELL-DESIGNED ROOM SHOULD HAVE: One really
good antique or vintage collectible; something large enough to notice like a console or bookcase. FEMALE DECORATOR MUSES: Nancy Lancaster and
Madeleine Castaing. Syrie Maugham had a cool thing going on, too. SUMMER WARDROBE STAPLES: I’m spending most
of my summer in Cape Cod, so am pulling out my Irving & Fine embroidered blouses and linen coats, and a pair of eyelet pants I bought in Capri about 900 years ago. I never tire of them.
FAVORITE FASHION DESIGNERS: Christian
Lacroix for textiles, the simplicity of Bill Blass, the structural femininity of Balenciaga’s draping, and Dior’s New Look. CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT…
French chairs, Yves Saint Laurent’s Rive Gauche, lipstick, a space to truly call my own and lock the door, and a cocktail here and there. GUILTY PLEASURE: The
Santa Palm Car Wash in West Hollywood has the best hot dog in history… and I hesitate to tell anyone. YOUR PERSONAL AND DECORATIVE STYLE:
Personal: Wasp with a bit of Audrey Hepburn meets Auntie Mame. Decorative: Wasp invited Mame, but she in turn invited Peggy Guggenheim unannounced. FASHION HOUSE YOU DREAM OF HAVING A COLLECTION WITH:
Such pressure, but I’ll say Balenciaga. I wonder if they’ll ask me… BEST GIFT YOU’VE RECEIVED? A surprise

Flecked with traditional notes, a healthy dose of eccentricity and classic British colonial cottages, the island’s charm inspires cool tones punctuated with vibrant color. Earthy home furnishings, white-washed finishes, nubby linens and rattan are right at home here. No wonder the design world is stealing its cues from this small Bahamian refuge. Fashion and interiors turn toward Beijing as this capital city dazzles with striking design. Shifting gears from traditional expectations—beloved chinoiserie, blue-andwhite porcelain and graceful lattice detailing—Beijing is setting a new tone where sleek lines reign supreme and regal undertones hark back to the Ming Dynasty. With thought-provoking architecture and Chinese culture as a muse, reimagined forms take shape, never compromising function for beauty, rather combining them seamlessly. Illustrating this notion is the Grace Beijing, a contemporary hotel in the much soughtafter 798 Art District, surrounded by world-class contemporary art galleries.

Hence, Williams lets each stroke of her palette knife unfold a story, driving the mélange of colors and textures to fuse together in her abstract contemporary work. The artist finds great beauty in imperfections—a piece of old wood, rusty metal, peeling paint—the things most people ignore or find unattractive. Yet, this exact philosophy is what gives her paintings, sculptures and metal cuts universal energy. Most of Williams’ works are untitled, as she doesn’t want to influence an observer’s analysis. “Once I am done, the interpretation is up to the viewer,” she says. “Everyone has a unique life experience and when they meet one of my pieces, the visceral connection is paramount.” michelleywilliams.com; 713.485.4291

lifelong passion with crystals, fossils and semiprecious gems into a thriving business—Empressive GeoDesigns—by fashioning finds from around the globe into lamps, sculptures and accents. “I have always been in love with the color and natural architecture of crystals,” says Gilbert, who considers Brazil a mineral mecca and has clients from as far away as Russia. According to Gilbert, the real work begins after she determines whether a particular mineral is better suited to being a lamp or a sculptural accent. “If the crystal formations are displayed in an ascending direction it’s better as an accent piece,” she says, first splitting the mineral in half before beginning the arduous polishing process. “Minerals can be very flaky and it takes a wide range of polishing tools to do the job right. It’s never just as simple as sticking something on a base.” empressivegeodesigns.com; 214.343.0000
RARE GEM
EMPRESS GILBERT HOW DO YOU DISCOVER THE MATERIALS THAT YOU USE?
Over the last 30 years I have acquired a team of people, including importers and geologists, who send me pictures from places around the world I could never get to on a regular basis. FAVORITE FINDS:
I have fossils from the Devonian era that are 350 to 400 million years old, and I also have a T. rex egg. GREATEST INFLUENCES:
There are a few artists who have paved the way for how mineral art is seen today. They include Willy Daro, Adolphe (Ado) Chale and Fernand Dresse. All have brought innovative creations to the home with minerals. I love their perspectives and passion. ART PERIOD YOU FIND MOST ENGAGING:
Surrealism; best exemplified by Salvador Dalí in his obscure, bold and intriguing works of art. COVETED ITEM:
My personal orange selenite heart lamp has been with me for several decades. When I look at it, I’m in awe of how Mother Nature created this organic heart-shaped mineral. LUXE INTERIORS

oteworthy hotels and resorts typically bust through design convention, yielding interior and architectural declarations that push the boundaries beyond residential projects. Both
creatively looser and more experimental in nature, these hotel designs’ bold assertions are definitely something to write home about, especially when an A-list decorator is at the helm. At the Viceroy Anguilla, Los Angeles designer Kelly Wearstler employed unexpected contrasts of natural, neutral-hued elegance where rugged driftwood intermingles with finely honed stone; and white, black and gold interplay with the blue Caribbean waters. The resort’s Sunset Lounge, overlooking the bay, is brimming with a myriad of design nuggets. A mesmerizing Italian marble backsplash primed for sleek open shelving stands tall and bold behind a Carrara-topped island with warm wood chevron detailing. “Be fearless,” advises Wearstler. “Incorporate a bold use of texture in your home, in your kitchen, and mix different metals and materials.” As a stylish departure to the natural backdrop, sumptuous gold (a staple of the designer’s) and shagreen-upholstered barstools offer a fashionable perch to survey the culinary action. “The raw material has so much spirit and natural beauty,” notes Wearstler. “It’s Mother Nature in her finest form. It’s architectural art.”

LOCAL FLAVOR For the retro-inspired coffee bar at The James Royal Palm (shown at left) in Miami Beach—an area known for its Art Deco buildings—designer Lauren Rottet wanted to keep in line with the design spirit of the revamped historic hotel, and luckily, already had the ideal foundation: an existing vintage green glass wall and counter surround. painted glass. “When I design a hotel, I look to create a mood specific to that property,” says Rottet. “I felt in this particular location that keeping with the 1940s and ’50s inspiration was appropriate.” Naples, Florida-based designer Jett Thompson also approached the Scarp Ridge Lodge’s décor, particularly that the kitchen, with an aesthetic in line with the boutique hotel’s Crested Butte, Colorado, locale. A take on the all-white kitchen, Thompson warmed up the potentially stark palette by working with blonde woods and almond-hued cabinetry and accents.

from a holiday to exotic Bali. With enticing beaches, sprawling cliffs, emerald rice fields, and active volcanic peaks, this ecological wonder may possess alluring topography, but it’s the
spirited approach to design that’s captured our attention. Encouraged by the lush equatorial gardens on the grounds of luxury resort Karma Jimbaran, Grounds Kent Architects embraced the untamed environment when creating this serene soaking retreat. Cast out of a unique blend of terrazzo, marble and
sandstone, the organically shaped bath echoes the design sensibility consistent throughout the property. “The villas are built to follow the design of a traditional courtyard found in a Bali village,” explains Martin Grounds, lead architect on the project. A wide stone path dotted with river rocks connects to the freestanding, open-air tub, overhung with palms and frangipanis, while the imposing stonewall anchors the retreat giving way to the natural plant inhabitants. The awardwinning Australian firm found inspiration amidst the lush tropical landscape and peacefully nestled this stunning display of classic Balinese architecture. “There is something truly luxurious about an outdoor bath in the sweet Bali air.”

Owner Izak Senbahar, who worked closely with Grange, wanted the hotel to exhibit “French luxury with Swiss precision.” Saturated with artistic expression, the übersophisticated vanity fitted with sleek Lefroy Brooks nickel finishes is a modern complement to the classically striped Belgian black and Thassos white marble floors. And that pastel mint complexion? It was added to “bring a translucent element into the mix,” says Senbahar. “It was necessary to include this eye-catching color detail to draw you in even further.”

eeking a country getaway near Houston, a couple found not a house, but rather an idyllic spot on which to build one—more than 100 acres with mature trees and rolling green hills, just an hour-and-a-half drive from home. “It almost looks like the
nearby areas of Brenham and Chappell Hill, which are charming little towns,” the wife says. “We fell in love with the property.” So build they would. “They wanted a country house that was like an English hunt cottage,” says Ginger Barber, the couple’s longtime interior designer. While living in London, they’d become enchanted with the countryside. They envisioned relaxing with friends and family, including their two grown daughters, and spending time with their teenage son hiking the property. Their longtime architects, Russell Windham and William Curtis, and landscape designer Sarah Newbery took their cues from the land. “It’s a remarkable property because there’s a spring-fed creek that runs through the middle of it, and there’s a pretty dramatic slope to the land,” says Windham, who accomplished the project with Hill Swift, Brian Davis and Joel Lowery. “We put the house up on the high side, so you look down on a lake that was made by incorporating the creek, and the owners have a big view of the valley beyond.” Adds Newbery, “What’s beautiful is that you 174 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

have the near ground of the sloping lawn, a middle ground with a lake that we made, and a long view with layers to it—you see hills and hills.” The couple enjoys an almost cinematic experience as they drive up to the home, which flirts through the trees and then disappears. “At first,

you’re meandering through what had been a horse farm,” Newbery says. “The house reveals itself through portions of the landscape.” In designing the home, the architects created a mixture of intimate rooms—for working or settling in with a good book—to grand, lightfilled spaces for big gatherings. “My husband comes from a large family, and this Thanksgiving, we were overflowing in the main house and the guest house,” the wife says. To make the grand rooms appear even larger, they’re preceded by smaller spaces. “When you enter the house, you come through a small entryway and then come into the main room that has a 15-foot-high ceiling. It’s almost a neoclassical English sitting room,” Windham says. “You don’t expect it to have this moment of grandeur, and then to the right, there’s an office sitting room for the master suite that’s very intimate.” LUXE INTERIORS

When furnishing the rooms, Barber kept scale at the forefront of her mind. “That main room is huge, and we just went for it,” she says. “We over-scaled everything.” She used an eclectic mix of antiques—from Swedish to Italian—throughout the home. The wife joined Barber on shopping trips, explaining that she feels more attached to her home if she can remember where every piece came from. Several family heirloom pieces were also incorporated. “There’s a desk in one of the upstairs bedrooms that belonged to my great-grandfather,” says the wife. “And we have a tiny rocking chair that was my husband’s when he was a child. It looks like it was made out of the side of a barrel, and we had it refinished.”

At the same time, comfort was key. “Every sofa in the house is 96 inches long, because everything had to be nap-able,” Barber says. She kept the furnishings as spare as possible, so as not to compete with the home’s well-crafted wainscoting and other millwork. Brad Ratcliff, whose team built the home to sky-high standards that will ensure it’s still standing in 100 years, also crafted the cabinetry and decorative woodwork. “We have our own 16,000-square-foot mill shop,” says Ratcliff, who worked on the build with his father Randal B. Ratcliff. “Curtis & Windham Architects designed every bit of it, and then we built what they drew.” Throughout the design and build, the homeowners were involved every step of the way. “We all hashed out the details together,” the wife says. “And we’re all friends, so it was a really enjoyable project.” L

hough the phrase “location, location, location” is generally attributed to British real estate tycoon Lord Harold Samuel, its earliest usage appeared in a 1926 Chicago Tribune classified ad. Yet what was true in
1926, as well as in Lord Samuel’s time, remains an incontrovertible fact today. Proof positive of the adage is this idyllic tree-shaded property in Austin, which is bordered on three sides by a postcard-perfect lake. Unfortunately for the couple who transferred from California to Texas for work, the existing 1983 house that sat on the land had a few quirks. “The house needed a lot of work,” says designer Fern Santini. “It was red and black, with a lot of gold sponge painting.” And so, Santini—along with architects Gary Furman and Philip Keil, home builder David Dalgleish and landscape designer Mark Word—was hired to turn the house into one more conducive to the homeowners’ lifestyle. “Having lived in such close proximity to the ocean, I liked the look of Malibu-style homes,” says the wife. For Santini, that translated to lots of big windows, natural light and materials like limestone and rift-sawn white oak flooring. “The owner didn’t want the home to be formal,” the designer says, “and if something was formal, it had to be juxtaposed with something informal.”

But before the women could translate these ideas into welcoming interiors, Furman had to deal with the structure. “We wanted to capitalize on the most beautiful vistas,” explains the wife, “but close in some areas where neighbors were in view to make it feel more cozy and give us privacy.” Outside, Furman says, “We inherited a lot of building forms from the old house. We clad them simply in stucco so their mass wouldn’t stand out too much. Then we added copper details—roof, downspouts and windows—and steel elements—the carport, boat dock and brise soleils.” Inside, “steel beams carry the weight of the roof, which allowed us to take down load-bearing walls that were cutting up the space,” he adds. moldings, he adds, emphasized the height of rooms, and “minimal finishes were an important part of making the interiors work.” These strategies gave the house a light-filled airiness not present in its former incarnation. In order to capitalize further on the views, Santini and her clients settled on a muted palette—creamy whites and soft natural gray-greens—that framed the scenery without distraction. Then Santini set about creating “yin and yang everywhere.” The dining room’s Swarovski crystal branch chandelier, for example, is balanced with a natural-edge credenza and a sturdy trestle table. “The wife is a sculptor and a potter, so she loved the handcrafted quality of pieces like the buffet,” explains Santini. Finally, adding to the relaxed elegance, Word created shaggy plantings that flop comfortably onto pathways (clover ferns), tall ones that sway in the breeze (sedges), flowering varieties that provide pops of color (shrimp plants and Chinese ground orchids) and dramatic accents that inject an occasional sculptural element (giant leopard plants). Word also added a few live oaks to those existing on the lot and, in a nod to the owners’ California days, a few olive trees. “The site is really all about these big trees and the water,” Word says. The teamwork resulted in a home in which it’s virtually impossible not to relax and unwind—the favorite spot being a daybed suspended on ropes in the screened porch that Furman carved out of the massive living room. It’s a far cry from the overly dark former dwelling that used to reside on the property. “They turned a house that didn’t appeal to me at all into a house that I now love,” concludes the homeowner happily. he homeowners wanted a more contemporary house but not necessarily an extremely modern one,” says architect David Stocker of the transitional-style abode he designed for a young family in the Bluffview
neighborhood of Dallas. “We used traditional forms and materials, but reinterpreted them in a fresh way.” But before breaking ground, Stocker had to determine the optimal orientation for the angular C-shaped house conceived around an inner courtyard. Its overall design incorporated a lot of glass, so avoiding direct sunlight was a priority. The resulting north-oriented inner spine of the C-shaped configuration is a 53-foot-long glass gallery running parallel to the courtyard. From the gallery, case openings flow into the public rooms—foyer, dining and living—which all front the home’s south-facing street side. The floor-to-ceiling windowed gallery also connects the private wing, with its master suite, to the family wing, with its kitchen and family room. “Circulation is often buried in a traditional hallway,” says Stocker. “Here, it’s part of the experience. The gallery isn’t just to get from A to B, but to walk along the edge of this pretty courtyard.”

“It took great precision to get the frameless corner windows just right in the gallery,” adds Brad Ellerman, who helmed the build. “We also had to put in concealed steel structures to support its roof.” In addition to glass and steel, other conventional building materials for the house included cement plaster on masonry, as well as slate shingle and standing seam metal. Stocker, however, transformed them into something different. “I used them in their simplest forms, yet with architectural theater,” he says. “So you get a hint, or tease, of the inner courtyard from the front of the house, but you don’t see it all. I used this layered technique throughout.” Stocker’s interesting architectural approach creates the illusion of a small village, which he achieved by combining varied rooflines and roof heights on the individual block forms that become the whole house. Despite this assorted technique, the residence feels seamless. “You can’t tell where the 202 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

architect’s work ends and mine begins,” says landscape architect Bill Bauer. “I wanted the landscaping and hardscaping to be boiled down using a minimalistic approach.” This was achieved, not just by rectilinear plantings and elements, but also by using bold materials, such as Cor-Ten steel. “There’s also a firm symbiotic relationship between the architecture and interior design,” says designer Ashley Tripplehorn Hunt, who worked on the home alongside Dee Dee Hoak. “The paint for the public areas was important because the space flows through open rooms into the bright gallery. They’re all seen at the same time. We picked a warm white because we didn’t want to compete with the exterior architecture and courtyard.” The color further served as a backdrop for the homeowners’ collection of artwork as well as their existing furnishings, which the designers blended into a relaxed interpretation of Hollywood Regency style.

“Though we used elements from the architecture to dictate what was going on with the interiors, balance is equally important in our design process,” says Tripplehorn Hunt. “It’s a family home and needed warmth.” The kitchen reflects this philosophy well. Though the cabinets and countertops are sleek laminate and cool stainless steel, the clean-lined butcher-block island is made of warm wood. Furthermore, the rounded shapes of the breakfast area chairs counteract the right-angled barstools. In the end, the modernist structure imbued with a warm and welcoming palette gracefully blends into its setting. “Dallas is usually very traditional,” says Stocker, “but this transitional style of home works well here, too. The homeowners really enjoy it.” L LUXE INTERIORS

their plans. “We were downsizing from our previous 4,200-square-foot home, which was nearby but not nearly as family-friendly,” explains Matt, who also helmed the build on the project. “Our number-one goal was to not sacrifice functionality or the quality of where we’d been.” Integral to the plan was architect Mark Carlson, with whom Matt had partnered many times, and who helped reorient the footprint of the house on the small 50-by-137-foot corner lot. “The original address of the house had it positioned toward the narrow end on the main street,” Carlson says. “We flipped it to face the side street so that the front would be significantly wider and the living areas could be in a more LUXE INTERIORS

open format.” Adds Matt, “We freed up a ton of space. The 35-foot setback that would have been the front yard became space for the pool and backyard activity.” A detached two-car garage became situated at the opposite end. Carlson was also able to align the Butterfields’ contemporary tastes with those of their more conservative neighbors. “When people think contemporary, they think of stark museums or colder spaces,” says the architect. “This is all clean lines and warm colors and materials: Hardiplank masonry siding, charcoal-colored standing seam roofing and symmetrically placed windows and dormers. It looks new and has a contemporary flair, but it blends in well with the neighborhood.” Designer Amy Mooney Lutz had done many projects with both Matt and Carlson as well, and it was her expertise with color palettes and finishes that contributed to the clean, open feel of the interiors. “The main floor is one living space that gets lots of light,” she says. “We ran white oak floors throughout for consistency and added splashes of color to keep it fresh and fun.”

After more than a year in the house, Matt attributes its success to the efforts of all involved. “When you have a team like we do that’s really comfortable working together, from builder to designer to architect, and everyone has mutual respect for what each person can bring to the table, you tend to get a better balance of overall quality and style,” he says. Or as Carlson puts it, “We figured out a way to downsize without giving up anything. The house lives bigger than it is.” L

PROVING THAT A GORGEOUS GREEN WORKS WITH ANY AESTHETIC, THIS DESIGN DUO SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SHADES FROM AVOCADO TO OLIVE.
COLOR TRAITS When Katie Schroder and Erika Rundiks of Atelier Interior Design were challenged with infusing color and glamour into a traditional home, they accepted with gusto. The homeowner attributed her love of color to a childhood spent in India and was looking for a way to liven up her study. To do so, Schroder and Rundiks used a fabric shade and lacquered kelly green shelving unit to pop against neutral furnishings and graphic wallpaper. “That particular green works
