FLEETWOOD WINDOWS & DOORS

The ‘Cadillac’ of Sliding Glass Doors Fleetwood Windows & Doors started in 1961 with the vision of being the best aluminum sliding door company in the Western United States. In fact, the company name was inspired by one of Cadillac’s most elite luxury sedans, the Fleetwood, establishing its reputation as the “Cadillac” of sliding glass doors. With engineering at the forefront of Fleetwood’s success, the company has continued to bring innovative design concepts to the manufacturing floor for more than 50 years. From windows and hinge doors, to traditional sliding and multi-slide glass doors, Fleetwood prides itself on designing and manufacturing the finest windows and doors for modern luxury homes through its national, high-end window dealers. Whether for energy savings, comfort and security, weather protection, budget or style, the residential and commercial applications are endless. Ever-connected with the design community, this family-owned and -operated company is rooted in more humble beginnings. “I grew up sweeping floors, making price books and working in the factory,” general manager Mark McCoy says. “But I’ve always had Fleetwood blood coursing through my veins.” Today, Fleetwood’s dedication to architectural integrity and the meticulous refinement of the “little things” has distinctively positioned the company as a true example of the American dream.

“WE CONTINUE TO BE DRIVEN BY ARCHITECTS AS THEY PUSH THE ENVELOPE FOR MORE EXPANSIVE WINDOW AND DOOR SYSTEMS, WITH MORE GLASS AND LESS FRAME.” FLEETWOOD ... LEADING THE WAY IN GREEN With an unwavering commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing, Fleetwood leads the fenestration market with the greenest multi-slide and sliding pocket doors in the United States. “Our aluminum products are manufactured using recycled aluminum and glass, and are offered in inert coatings and finishes,” McCoy says. “To lessen our environmental impact even more, 100 percent of our aluminum scrap is recyclable.” In addition, Fleetwood is the leader in providing LEED-certified homes with “green-friendly” windows and doors! THE SHAPE OF THINGS

I’ve always been fascinated by the built environment— the influence that a single structure, a street or an entire neighborhood can elicit and how that manifests over time. Take Miami Beach, for example, which happens to be the city where I’m drafting this letter. Arguably, architecture is what largely helped evolve this mangroveand-mosquito-laden barrier island into one of America’s most vibrant urban destinations. What began in the early 1900s with developer Carl Fisher’s Mediterranean Revival architecture segued into a tropical adaptation of Art Deco in the ’30s and was enhanced by a defining postwar extravagant Modernism movement pioneered by Morris Lapidus. Today, Miami’s bold, expanding skyline is a progression of those ideas realized through the lens of architecture’s most esteemed names: Herzog & de Meuron, Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, to name a few. In this issue, we give props to architecture’s innovators and icons: We ID five famous house museums to put on your bucket list; shine a spotlight on of-the-moment residential architects; and examine the connection between Los Angeles’ imaginative structures and the art world. As Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” From the residences that we inhabit to the buildings we work in and the public spaces that surround us, design matters.

ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER

Welcome to the May/June issue of Luxe Interiors + Design! We attended some great events these past few months. First, Luxe partnered with the AIA Austin Emerging Professionals for the first open house event of the year at Luma Hardwoods. Guests enjoyed a lively happy hour while touring Luma’s East Austin showroom. We were also thrilled to welcome AIA Austin’s newest committee, Women in Architecture, and the inaugural three-week event series Shape the Conversation. Recognizing the extraordinary achievements of women architects in Texas and beyond, Women in Architecture encourages and empowers professionals, students and the public to engage in exhibits and a series of panels and conversations to grow a leadership program for women architects in the community. Shape the Conversation featured three exhibits—as well as a number of lunchtime round table panels and happy hours—highlighting the work of women architects throughout the years, across the nation and in Travis County. Enjoy the issue!

CONTRIBUTORS

GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

LAURA MOSS Photographer / New York If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? Dubai or Shanghai. I think amazing things are being done in these places. On your design wish list: Furniture pieces that can hide all signs of technology and still be beautiful, as well as a great comfortable chair that is cat-proof. Also, I would love to own the perfect ceiling fan. Having grown up in South Florida without air conditioning, ceiling fans were definitely important, but I find that their design is sometimes lacking. Favorite book on your nightstand: I really love Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. Preferred superpower: The ability to freeze time. Best career advice you’ve received: “It’s freelance—you are free to work with whomever you want.” I would not say it’s the best advice ever, but I do love it as it makes me step back and see how lucky I am to be in such a creative field and not stuck in an office forced to follow a specific career track.

JOANNE FURIO

Writer / San Francisco Whose work are you most influenced by design-wise? Charles and Ray Eames. My kids say that I’m stuck in the 1970s, but it’s midcentury elements that I love the most: low-slung houses, groovy furniture, tropical houseplants, mod clothes, heavy eye makeup and sky-high hair—all of it. Ideal work trip: Being sent on a travel assignment to India, Japan or Mongolia. All my Asian friends tell me I need to go to the Far East. Prized possessions: A Donghia deep armchair I got at a sample sale in New York, my grandmother’s marble column table lamps and a sterling-silver bubble ring from the ’60s that had been my aunt’s. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: Joshua Miele, a member of the board at Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco; he’s blind and creates all these new technologies for the visually impaired. If not a writer, I would be… A landscape architect. I love gardens and stone.

LX_COM13_Contributors.indd 98

NATHAN KIRKMAN Photographer / Chicago My biggest creative influences come from… Anyone that shows a passion and continues to work at it. Who are some of the most fascinating people you’ve come across in your life? Author Ray Bradbury, designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and photographer Tim Hursley are all at the top of my list. I would love to one day own... An Hermès Leica camera, La Cornue’s Château 150 in carbon fiber and a photograph by Larry Sultan. What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self? I would most likely tell myself to take a course on business management—and to buy some Apple stock. Dream assignment: Anything that allows me to travel to new places!

CHRISTINE DEORIO Writer / Denver Design obsession: Benjamin Moore’s Homestead Green paint, which I discovered while visiting floral designer Frances Harjeet’s Queen Anne-style home in Denver. It’s elegant and soothing, especially in a room with lots of soft, natural light. If you could interview anyone, who would it be? Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air radio show, who has spoken with many fascinating people during her career. I’m always impressed by how prepared she is for every interview and by her ability to ask probing questions in such a friendly way. I’d like to ask her how she prepares, how she handles difficult or taciturn guests, and how she stays so well-informed about everything. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? The revitalization of Rust Belt cities. I love a good comeback story. The word “Detroit” used to conjure images of once-magnificent buildings in ruins. Now, many of those buildings are hip restaurants, and the city is coming to be known as “the new Brooklyn” for its influx of creatives and burgeoning art and design scenes.

It’s all in the details for leading architects across the country. For Duncan McRoberts, it’s all about paying tribute to classic masters (above); for Cade Hayes, the nuances of the southwestern landscape lead him to design inspired structures with intriguing aesthetic facets (right). Matthew Grzywinski’s and Matt Berman’s works (opposite, from left to right respectively) stand out for their distinct uses of shapes, colors and materials.

RADAR / ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING HUNTER FLEETWOOD

▼ MELISSA BRILLHART

Los Angeles | fleetwoodfernandez.com

Miami | brillhartarchitecture.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Hunter Fleetwood believes in the power of the built environment on affecting human action and thought. His restaurants, homes and commercial projects, created in conjunction with partner Mariapaz Fernandez-Trillo, demonstrate a forward-thinking—and often whimsical—point of view.

WHY WE LOVE HER: Inspired by everything from childhood woodworking projects to the Shaker structures of New Hampshire, Melissa Brillhart works in tandem with her husband, Jacob, designing homes that place a heavy emphasis on their surrounding contexts. ON THE HORIZON: The couple is currently working on a Bahamian cottage for themselves—a 600-square-foot residence that pulls inspiration from historic Bahamian architecture as well as the Creole Cabinet-Loggia typology—and celebrating the publication of Jacob’s new book, titled Voyage Le Corbusier: Drawing on the Road.

ON THE HORIZON: At the moment, Fleetwood is thrilled about undertaking a residential project for a young family in L.A. that is involved in the arts, which is allowing him to push his creativity to the max. IN HIS WORDS: “While we are supporters of the heightened influx of technology both in the design process and construction methods, on every project we advocate for the inclusion of artisanal quality craftsmanship. When we are successful, you will see form that is handmade and machine-fabricated in juxtaposition. We find it a captivating dichotomy.”

DUNCAN MCROBERTS

Kirkland, WA | mcroberts-associates.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Duncan McRoberts pours over archeological records, measured drawings and books before building a precedent file that invokes the design principles and tectonic characters of the master works he studies. He then crafts work that aims to achieve a perfect balance in composition, beauty and proportion. ON THE HORIZON: McRoberts is designing a boarding school—in classic Oxbridge-style architecture—and a new coastal-traditional neighborhood development on 80 acres in Oregon.

MATTHEW GRZYWINSKI ▲

New York | gp-arch.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: For his architectural works, Matthew Grzywinski embraces sustainability, function and his aesthetic experience to design spaces that exhibit a sumptuous minimalism. His partnership with fellow architect Amador Pons has birthed a newfound design philosophy based on the principles of beauty, innovation and detail. ON THE HORIZON: Grzywinski’s firm is beginning construction on a residential building in London in addition to a new apartment building in the East Village of Manhattan and a structure on the campus of Cambridge University. IN HIS WORDS: “We try not to chase innovation or novelty for its own sake. Our struggle to marry the rigorous with the exuberant yields interesting results.”

LX_COM13_Radar_ArchitectsToWatch.indd 104

IN HIS WORDS: “The value of artistic import lies in an ability to mediate between ourselves and the schema of our life experiences. Our work is meant to promise harmony of place.”

CADE HAYES

Tucson | dustdb.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Cade Hayes founded the firm Dust in 2007 with co-collaborator Jesús Edmundo Robles Jr. and worked diligently to put together a creative team that is deeply connected to its southwestern desert roots. The firm’s architecture, furniture, hardware and jewelry reflect a boundless respect for natural materials and exhibit a serene display of restraint. ON THE HORIZON: Dust is working on its first public work: a pavilion for the Tucson Audubon Society’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds. IN HIS WORDS: “We are not trying to keep up with current thinking or cool trends; we are simply trying to do really thoughtful, sensitive work. We’d rather be classic than new.”

FLEETWOOD PHOTO: BENNY CHAN. BRILLHART PHOTO: CLAUDIA URIBE. MCROBERTS PHOTO: LAURIE BLACK. HAYES PHOTO: BILL TIMMERMAN. GRZYWINSKI PHOTO: FLOTO + WARNER.

IN HER WORDS: “As the office has grown and matured, we have taken something instinctual and transformed it into something more deliberate and conscious. We are much more cognizant of and responsive to the specific spatial and atmospheric qualities in architecture that move or affect us emotionally.”

3/20/17 2:38 PM

RADAR / ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING

GULLA JONSDOTTIR

Los Angeles | gullajonsdottir.com WHY WE LOVE HER: Icelandic-born Gulla Jonsdottir has a poetic understanding of dynamic forms, leading her to create groundbreaking spatial experiences with her designs. ON THE HORIZON: On the heels of a furniture debut at Salone del Mobile, Jonsdottir is working on projects around the world, including the Macau Roosevelt hotel in China, the Sugar Factory at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, and penthouses in San Francisco. IN HER WORDS: “My first employer was Richard Meier, a great architect with a great sense of geometry, which appealed to my earlier studies of mathematics. Today, I prefer to be more free. There are no straight lines in the human body, so why should there be any in the spaces we occupy?”

JUANCARLOS FERNANDEZ

St. Helena, CA | signumarchitecture.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: With a sincere focus on sustainability, Juancarlos Fernandez and the team behind Signum Architecture create residential and commercial spaces as well as wineries that echo the landscapes in which they reside through the use of natural materials.

SCOTT LINDENAU

Colorado | studiobarchitects.net

ON THE HORIZON: Currently, Fernandez is putting the finishing touches on a home on 40 acres in the hills of St. Helena. The client searched the valley for years to find the perfect property and enlisted Fernandez to create a house unlike any other he’s designed.

WHY WE LOVE HIM: As design principal at Studio B Architecture + Interiors, Scott Lindenau believes in reflective architecture: He creates crafted, modern designs that aim to allow clients to view themselves differently. While Studio B’s ultramodern projects seem grandiose, the firm strives to emulate a covetable, welcoming lifestyle.

IN HIS WORDS: “Our mission is to engage the power of architecture to stir emotion while setting the stage for inspiring living.”

ON THE HORIZON: In conjunction with the team at Studio B, Lindenau is diversifying his work in both location and project type— producing projects in several states, as well as Costa Rica, and working on several residences, a school, a tropical boutique hotel and a recycling waste treatment center.

DAN WHEELER

Chicago | wkarch.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Dan Wheeler leads his firm, Wheeler Kearns Architects, in creating architectural snowflakes, with each design reflecting a remarkably different point of view and energy. Wheeler’s work captures a fresh, modern sensibility, but each project also has a singular focus on the clients’ desires and the overall mission of the site.

MATT BERMAN

New York | workshopapd.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Matt Berman, along with cofounder of Workshop/APD, Andrew Kotchen, crafts public and private spaces that demonstrate a keen understanding of how people interact with design. ON THE HORIZON: On the boards this year for Workshop/APD: a 45,000-square-foot residential tower in the West Village, a new hotel in Washington Heights and summer homes in Bal Harbour, Florida; South Beach; Nantucket, Massachusetts; and the Bahamas, among others. IN HIS WORDS: “Our designs are deeply rooted in the human experience and we look to architects, fashion, history—or even food—for inspiration.”

LX_COM13_Radar_ArchitectsToWatch.indd 106

ON THE HORIZON: Having recently completed work on The Alice, a community engagement space at Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Wheeler is looking forward to a year full of projects dreamed up for a number of diverse clients, including several museum spaces, theaters, schools and homes. IN HIS WORDS: “We just try to do good, thoughtful work and make it emotionally meaningful to a place, to people from all walks of life that encounter it, and to ourselves.”

JONSDOTTIR PHOTO: KHANH RENAUD. FERNANDEZ PHOTO: ADRIÁN GREGORUTTI. WHEELER PHOTO: STEVE HALL, HEDRICH BLESSING. BERMAN PHOTO: DONNA DOTAN. LINDENAU PHOTO: DRAPER WHITE.

IN HIS WORDS: “Our work is clear, direct and devoid of frivolous materials. It’s about conveying a message of clarity and minimalism while reflecting our rigorous process of ‘distillation.’ ”

Los Angeles architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, who redefined beach house living with the Vault House (shown here and at bottom), are also reinventing ways to show art, as with their work on the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” exhibition at LACMA.

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a place for creatives. In your opinion, what makes the city such a popular destination for artists these days? Artists are drawn by the presence of an arts scene: lots of other artists, art schools and the explosion of new galleries. This scene exists

PRODUCED BY MARY ORE

here in part because L.A. is still affordable relative to other art capitals. In some neighborhoods, artists are still able to find houses with garages and large yards for making large works, and in downtown L.A. and some other industrial areas, they can find the kinds of studios that have long

attracted artists: unplanned, sometimes illegal, but spacious and affordable live-work spaces in old warehouses and light industrial buildings. Which neighborhoods are you finding artists migrating to for their living spaces and studios? Currently, they’re migrating to areas in L.A. that are still affordable and have dwelling spaces with room to make art, including parts of downtown L.A. as well as Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Frogtown, Elysian Park and Inglewood. Often, though, these migrations can cause pushback from the existing communities in several of these areas over fears of gentrification. Has this explosion of artistic talent affected the cultural and architectural dynamic of the city? Yes, definitely. We’re seeing a number of architects who are collaborating closely with artists. For example, Jimenez Lai, of Bureau Spectacular, recently collaborated with New York artist Grayson Cox on “Speechbuster / 99 Chairs,” an exhibit commissioned by Storefront for Art and Architecture with a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Are there any local architects that we should be keeping an eye on? Lorcan O’Herlihy is designing some of the most interesting multifamily dwellings in West Hollywood and Los Angeles, like his most recent, SL11024, in Westwood Village. Tom Wiscombe, too, an architect and teacher at SCI-Arc, is bringing an experimental aesthetic to his projects, including the upcoming, private Main Museum

in downtown L.A. Then, there are Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, from Johnston Marklee, who are designing extremely refined private homes and art spaces, including the Menil Drawing Institute that will open at The Menil Collection in Houston in October. Finally, LA-Más is a firm that aims to improve residential and public spaces in low-income areas but maintains a strong Pop sensibility while doing so. Favorite public buildings in Los Angeles? Studio Jantzen and Behnisch Architekten’s Parking Structure #6 in Santa Monica and Lehrer Architects’ Central Park Recreation Pool in South L.A. top my list. The colorful parking structure reflects city planners’ goal of beautifying an otherwise banal or even ugly building type. Not only is it intended to accommodate large numbers of bikes and electric cars as well as ordinary cars, it has the added feature of a dramatic red staircase on the façade, aimed at encouraging drivers to walk up and down stairs. For his part, Michael Lehrer drew on California artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and their “beautiful coloration,” he says, as well as David Hockney’s “ebullient turquoise water,” when he and his team designed the pool to replace one that had been closed to locals for 12 years. The design was built on a budget but proves that imagination can go a long way in creating an attractive public venue in a community that had long needed one. Why have you chosen radio as your preferred method of communicating with the architecture community? What does this medium add to such a traditionally visual conversation? I was originally drawn to radio because I like asking questions and hearing smart people talk—specifically as it relates to communicating architecture, which is, of course, a visual medium. Paradoxically, radio frees one from images and gives the interviewer time to explore, without visual distraction, the ideas behind and the human impact of buildings.

And by the same token, has the architectural dynamic of the city had any effect on the community of new artists who are now calling it home? I’m seeing some intriguing things happening in museum and gallery design at the moment. For example, the installation that architecture firm Johnston Marklee created for the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” show at LACMA breaks from the tendency to shroud modern and contemporary art in white-painted rooms. The exhibit features a subtly dramatic layout, with a sequence of galleries that move through the artist’s career, denoted by slate gray walls at the start and progressing through time to light gray. Into the walls of these galleries, they’ve cut doorways that line up in a slashing diagonal, making for a moment of surreal visual drama in an otherwise restrained design.

PARKING STRUCTURE

too, is noteworthy and exemplifies California minimalism, while Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, who has worked with many artists, has designed Christie’s brand-new multipurpose flagship space in Beverly Hills. Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of the union between Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena, of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, and artist Sharon Lockhart, who was selected to represent Poland at this year’s Venice Biennale.

WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE IF YOU COULD VISIT YOUR FAVORITE ARCHITECTS AT HOME? THESE FAMOUS DOMICILES-TURNED-MUSEUMS PROVIDE THE ANSWER TO NEARLY EVERY DESIGN LOVER’S MOST BURNING QUESTION. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

FALLINGWATER Mill Run, Pennsylvania Probably the best-known residence on our list, Fallingwater is a testament to everything architecture enthusiasts have come to love about Frank Lloyd Wright: attention-grabbing design that works with and not against its environment. Designed for department-store magnates, the Kaufmann family, Fallingwater is currently the only Wright-designed house that is open to the public with all of its original furniture and artwork on display precisely as they appeared upon the residence’s completion in 1939. REASON TO VISIT: Thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, in collaboration with local arts and architecture organizations, the house provides a variety of immersive, educational experiences through a series of lectures and residencies—so it’s perfect for Wright fans who want a more in-depth look at the architect’s creative process.

EAMES HOUSE Pacific Palisades, California The final home of legendary husbandand-wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames, this midcentury jewel box was a veritable creative playground for the couple thanks to its two-box modular structure: one of which contained their living quarters and the other which functioned as a working studio. Constructed in 1949, the building boasts a limited material palette of glass and steel with warm wooden accents throughout the interiors and pops of green from the verdant environs. REASON TO VISIT: If you’ve ever had the inclination to celebrate the bygone wedding of an envy-inducing couple you’ve never met, each year the Eames Foundation—which is responsible for the supervision of and conservancy efforts for the Pacific Palisades home—hosts a Members Appreciation Day during the week of June 20th, Charles and Ray’s anniversary, complete with guided tours and juried design competitions.

RADAR / ITINERARY FARNSWORTH HOUSE

Plano, Illinois

One of only three residential homes in the United States designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Farnsworth House is considered to be one of the purest examples of the pioneering architect’s bare-bones modern style. Comprised of one sole room, the weekend retreat was originally designed for prominent Chicago nephrologist Dr. Edith Farnsworth with floor-to-ceiling windows that facilitate an easy communion with nature. REASON TO VISIT: You’ll want to make it out to this handsome piece of architectural history before it gets the full Hollywood treatment: Actors Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have recently signed on to appear in a feature film that will fictionalize the highly-speculated-upon relationship between Farnsworth and Mies van der Rohe that developed during the home’s construction.

GROPIUS HOUSE Lincoln, Massachusetts The name of German architect Walter Gropius is nearly synonymous with the movement he is widely regarded to have founded: Bauhaus. And the home he built for himself and his family in Massachusetts may well have been the structure that helped cement the style as part of architecture’s canon. Built in 1938, the house blends traditional New England architectural elements like wood and brick with modernist materials like glass, plaster and chrome and today feels like a perfectly preserved time capsule. REASON TO VISIT: The Gropius House is a sight to behold any time, but when admired at night thanks to monthly events hosted by Historic New England, the organization responsible for the conservation of the property, the home is transformed by the architect’s own innovative lighting scheme.

LX_COM13_Radar_HouseMuseums .indd 106

While The Glass House is only one of 14 structures on late architect Philip Johnson’s massive 49-acre property in Connecticut, it’s easy to see why it’s also the most beloved: its wallless construction makes it feel more like a dream of a house than a house itself. For all its avant-garde flourishes, though, its interior provides a fairly traditional living space inhabited by Johnson himself when he was in residence there from 1949 to 2005. REASON TO VISIT: Although the house is only open to the public May through November, it makes up for lost time with a near-dizzying schedule of events and art exhibits. Last year’s landscape installation by the artist Yayoi Kusama, for example, transformed the property’s newly restored pond into a fluid art gallery thanks to the addition of 1,300 floating steel sculptures.

TEXAS’ TOPOGRAPHY AND THE VARIOUS RESIDENCES THAT OCCUPY THE LAND MAKE FOR CAPTIVATING PAGE-TURNERS. THESE FOUR NEW TOMES ON THE SUBJECT ARE MEANT TO INSPIRE. A VISION OF PLACE: THE WORK OF CURTIS & WINDHAM ARCHITECTS William Curtis and Russell Windham For 25 years, Houston architects William Curtis and Russell Windham have remained committed to preserving classical architecture that seamlessly blends into the surrounding landscape. Their monograph chronicles 18 of the duo’s boundlessly elegant projects, from mansions in the city’s tony River Oaks neighborhood to country retreats and a backyard studio. tamupress.com

with Joseph Adams, Kevin Alter and Craig McMahon

The beauty of the state’s landscapes and natural materials are reflected in the award-winning works of the 34 Texas architects spotlighted in this 224-page book. While the style and locations of the featured residences vary—from the harsh southern Coastal Plains to east Texas’ piney woods—all pay homage to the local environment and unpredictable weather. schifferbooks.com

MARFA MODERN: ARTISTIC INTERIORS OF THE WEST TEXAS HIGH DESERT Helen Thompson

THE INSIDER WENDY DUNNAM TITA

Escape to the artistically minimalistic interiors in writer and editor Helen Thompson’s documentation of home design in Marfa. By peering into 21 clever homes—including one in a former gas station and another that was previously a jail—that embrace the desert terrain, readers get a sense of the design sensibility artist Donald Judd introduced to the area in the 1970s. monacellipress.com

GEORGIA O’KEEFFE: WATERCOLORS Amy Von Lintel As principal and interior architecture director at Austinbased Page Southerland Page, Wendy Dunnam Tita is the type to master her profession—and then go a step further. Case in point: She’s slated to be the 2018 president of her local AIA chapter and currently chairs the group’s newest committee, Women in Architecture, an endeavor she pursued based on the alarming difference in the number of women who earn architecture degrees and those who join the industry. We caught up with her to learn more about her work. pagethink.com You often collaborate with Austin artisans. Can you name a few? For woodworking and steel, I go to Maček Furniture Company and Hatch Workshop. For lighting, I turn to Cook Shop and Warbach. And for hardware, I am grateful we have Alexander Marchant in town. Any current projects you can share? My firm is working on a lovely boutique hotel in Round Rock called The Ruby Hotel. An existing midcentury house on the property will be used for a cocktail lounge and meeting rooms, and we are adding two wings of rooms under a canopy of gorgeous heritage trees. It will be a true gem.

Prior to launching her New York City career, Georgia O’Keeffe painted nearly 50 watercolors while living in Canyon from 1916 to 1918. During this intensely creative period, she cemented her allegiance to abstraction in works reflective of both the Texas desert and of herself. Large-scale reproductions of the artist’s watercolors during this time are vividly displayed in Amy Von Lintel’s hardcover. radiusbooks.org

OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS

High-end interiors names are budding across Texas this spring. Now that Brian Bolke moved his Forty Five Ten boutique to Dallas, in its original location he opened For Home (4510 McKinney Ave.), filled with furnishings from locals including Forty Five Ten Creative Director Rob Dailey, who is heading the store, and Emily Summers, whose Gondola sofa is shown below. A few blocks away is an expanded Coco & Dash (2815 N. Henderson Ave.), which now has an elegant work space for designers and even more product. Holland & Sherry (5120 Woodway Dr., Suite 120) has taken up room in the Decorative Center Houston, and the city is also home to the second Texas showroom of German-made kitchen brand Leicht (3951 San Felipe St.). And in Austin, newcomer Reclaimed Wood ATX (2505 E. 6th St.) lets clients purchase materials, furnishings crafted of repurposed woods and custom pieces.

What’s in store for Women in Architecture? We recently hosted our inaugural Shape the Conversation initiative, a three-week event with exhibits, events and roundtables that recognize women’s achievements and promote diversity and inclusion. Our fund-raising is going toward an Early Career Leadership Program, which will help participants develop communication, business, negotiation and other skills. 110 / LUXESOURCE.COM

DATE BOOK

ALLAN KNIGHT AND CEARAN HENLEY For nearly two decades, Allan M. Knight has reigned as an expert in contemporary glamour. He developed his brand, Allan Knight and Associates, in 1999 with co-founder Ben Goldfarb, and today his 40,000-square-foot Dallas showroom is full of high-end pieces from leading designers, European and Asian antiques and his own lines of furnishings, textiles, lighting and upholstery. In addition to juggling interior design ventures—he has no fewer than six major residential projects underway—Knight continues to grow the brand with his husband and design partner, Cearan Henley. In a tribute to the city that has fostered their burgeoning business, the dynamic duo share their must-visits for a perfect day in Dallas. allan-knight.com

10 a.m. Visit the Nasher Sculpture Center, which holds one of the world’s best collections of contemporary sculpture. A stroll through the outdoor gardens in springtime is a must.

2 p.m. Drive through the tony Preston Hollow and Bluffview neighborhoods, where many of our design projects are, to take in the varied architecture and beautiful landscapes. 3 p.m. Stop by Bird Bakery in Highland Park Village for coffee and a cupcake (Allan’s favorite) or a chicken salad sandwich (Cearan’s pick—he always needs protein).

12 p.m. For lunch, try some grilled fish at the new Flying Fish on Irving Boulevard. Our favorites are the spicy grilled catfish (Cearan’s order) and the Mexican shrimp cocktail (Allan’s)—it’s a meal unto itself.

4 p.m. Head to the Inwood Theatre for a matinee foreign or independent film. The iconic 1947-built theater has been restored to its original splendor, including painted murals and neon-lit panels. While you wait for your movie to start, grab a martini at the beautifully outfitted Art Deco Inwood Lounge.

1 p.m. Get outside for some fresh air with a walk on the Trinity Strand Trail, which winds through the Design District. If it’s raining, get a good workout with a yoga session instead at Equinox in Highland Park.

6 p.m. Have a pre-dinner martini at Hillstone in University Park (we are regulars here and even have our own server) before ending the night with a meal at Gemma on Henderson Avenue, known for a creative menu.

PHOTOS: CINESCOPE CREATIVE.

9 a.m. Enjoy an organic egg-white-andveggie burrito at Start on Lemmon Avenue, and then head to Ascension in the Dallas Design District, near our showroom, for a cup to go of the strongest, best coffee in town.

SYNCHRONICITY BY HUBBARDTON FORGE In the world of design, lighting often plays a supporting role. In the hands of luxury lighting manufacturer Hubbardton Forge, it steals the show. The company’s new line, Synchronicity, puts the spotlight on their sculptural, hand-forged metal with the added elegance of Swarovski crystals. “We were looking for something with a bolder voice,” design director David Kitts says. “To design a fixture with real star power, a la Audrey Hepburn.” With carefully crafted precision and purposeful placement, Hubbardton Forge’s in-house designers cradle the crystals within each fixture, like a fine jewel. In some cases, the crystals take center stage, in others, they’re treated as an accent. “We’re striving for a 50-50 role with crystal and forged elements in a very organic way,” Kitts continues. With myriad residential and commercial applications, Synchronicity captures the heritage of Hubbardton Forge with lighting that plays the lead role in any design.

SYNCHRONICITY + SWAROVSKI A SERENDIPITOUS AFFAIR How did the world’s foremost crystal maker join forces with foremost luxury lighting designer Hubbardton Forge? It was serendipity for Synchronicity. Swarovski approached Hubbardton Forge toward the end of 2015 as they were developing a new way to cut crystal. At the same time, Hubbardton Forge was looking to craft the next statement piece for the home. “Swarovski was the ideal partnership,” Kitts tells. TOP. A unity of craft and glamour, the Courbé Duet features the world premiere of the new Wave Cut crystal from Swarovski embraced by flowing steel tendrils. BOTTOM. ZEPHYR Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Zephyr looks back at the defining moments in the company’s history and its game-changing kitchen hoods. In 1997, it was the first manufacturer to bring power ventilation to the modern kitchen, with three undercabinet hoods. By 2001, Zephyr became known for chimney-style, stainless-steel hoods, which remain prominent. Aligned with a design-centric approach, the company partnered with the world’s most influential designers, including Fu-Tung Cheng and Robert Brunner, who balance aesthetics and technology with a masterful eye. Today, Zephyr sets industry standards in technology, through its DCBL Suppression System®, which renders the hood virtually silent and supremely energy-efficient, and its Bloom™ HD and BriteStrip™ LED products. “We continue to elevate the kitchen through design, discovery and care,” president Luke Siow says. In the hands of Zephyr, the onceoverlooked hood has become a major player in the appliance category, inspiring a new generation of kitchen design.

TURNING HEADS AGAIN ... BLACK STAINLESS STEEL Zephyr adds to its list of firsts with the launch of Black Stainless Steel Hoods, made with titanium coating, to the luxury appliance market. Aside from its striking aesthetic value, the new black stainless steel promises uniformity, durability and strength with military-grade protection, and anti-smudge and fingerprint-resistant properties. In addition, each hood can be outfitted with the company’s technological innovations, including BriteStrip™ LED lighting and ICON Touch® controls. TOP. WEATHEREND ESTATE FURNITURE No other company embodies quality and durability like Weatherend, the Maine outdoor furniture builder steeped in century-old traditions. Think back to 1905, when landscape architect Hans Heistad worked the coastal properties of several summer estates in Maine. One estate, named Weatherend, was his pride and joy. It is here that he crafted landscapes complemented with outdoor pieces that became the inspiration for Weatherend’s furniture designs. The influence of Heistad, along with boatbuilding skills taught by his father, enabled owner Gil Harper to introduce yacht construction integrity to outdoor furniture. These skills, combined with marine materials, have resulted in Weatherend’s signature curves and finishes that add grace and endurance to any residential or commercial space. “Our yacht-building expertise allows us to create innovative designs that can be customized to any outdoor setting,” Harper says.

WEATHEREND’S COLLECTIONS ESTATE: With 80 to 100 pieces, Weatherend’s original Estate collection is inspired by designs Heistad created while working on the Weatherend and Pulitzer estates from 1905 to 1935. YACHTING: Using curves for comfort, the Yachting collection has a distinctive design with each piece inspired by life on the water. ANGELA ADAMS: When Harper saw well-known textile and furniture designer Angela Adams’ work, he recognized an opportunity to introduce it to the outdoor market. EXPRESSIONS: The unique Expressions collection is a completely custom line that gives clients the opportunity to specify design, shape, color and finish for any “expression” they want. WINDSOR: The company’s newest casual and dining chairs pay homage to the first outdoor furniture brought to the colonies, but with a contemporary spin. *All Weatherend furniture is available at JANUS et Cie showrooms across the country.

Debbie Cahill Turner Design Seattle, WA “With so many of my favorite vendors exhibiting at the show, I always walk away with incredible finds for my clients. Most recently, I found vintage vinyl floor cloths in great color combinations, which I love to use in casual dining spaces, at Spicher and Company. Blush and pink tones, often paired with gold metals and ginkgo motifs in lighting, accessories and furniture, were everywhere. Organic forms inspired by nature were quite popular too. My favorite was Currey & Company’s Forest chandelier with gilded branches dripping in quartz crystal. Since I’m based on the West Coast, I find Las Vegas Market to be one of the most comprehensive and inspiring shows to attend. Download the market app to navigate the show with ease, and make it a point to stop by showrooms with which you’re unfamiliar. You never know what cool, new lines you’ll find.”

Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design Los Angeles, CA “We’ve always found incredible, undiscovered furniture and lighting lines, as well as spectacular tabletop accessory companies, at Las Vegas Market. In addition to shopping for furnishings, we love finding unique styling details, such as stunning drapery hardware, exquisite bed linens, beautiful stemware and more. We’ve also witnessed many trends evolve at the show, from the wave of linen fabric upholstery and French napkin trends, to bold ethnic rug collections and hospitality quality furnishings. We’re constantly surprised by our new finds each season. Don’t miss a thing, map out the World Market Center and allow for extra time to explore. You’re guaranteed to always find something. Truly, Las Vegas Market is a smart design resource with so much to offer for a whole design project.”

ADG San Francisco, CA “The sheer volume of resources available to designers at Las Vegas Market is mind-boggling. Each season there are more and more innovations and new products that we have never seen before, which is always exciting. Since it’s hosted in Las Vegas, there’s a level of excitement and energy like no other show. My most recent favorite product finds are the stylish and edgy CASEGOODS collection at SHO MODERN and the breadth of luxury home accessories at Noir. I’m always inspired by elegant materials and meticulous craftsmanship, and love seeing the trend of custom requests and collaborations between designers and vendors continue—no matter what the product is. To maximize your time at the show, make sure you have a list of “not to be missed” vendors and remember to bring a ton of business cards. As much as the show is about sourcing, it’s also about networking.”

Las Vegas Market is open to the trade only, July 30 – August 3, 2017. Don’t miss the Las Vegas Market and Luxe Interiors + Design’s “Ahead of the Curve” trend presentation on August 1st! Register online at lasvegasmarket.com

ANDREA COCHRAN

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT ACOCHRAN.COM

At first sight: The Radiant lamps are elegant and timeless, perfectly reflecting Janice Feldman’s personal vision. I love how the carved surfaces contrast with the simplicity of the orbs, resulting in this beautifully crafted texture juxtaposed with minimal design. On the job: My work has always been grounded in modernism and minimalist art; I am interested in the perception of nature and natural phenomena in relation to more structured forms. In the daylight… These lamps look like elegant stone sculptures, solid and weighty. At night, they are transformed into lanterns, with an airiness that belies the materiality of the stone—I’m reminded of the paper lanterns you see in the Japanese tōrō nagashi ceremony. At home: The subtle genius of these lamps is their versatility. They could stand on a table beautifully but could also effectively illuminate the small corners of a garden.

FIRST MATES THE PIECES: Radiant Double Knitting Ball and Radiant Knitting Ball THE DESIGNER: Janus et Cie FIND IT: janusetcie.com THE INSPIRATION: Taking their cue from the texture of yarn, the Radiant lamps are actually constructed of natural, undyed sandstone and beam from within, capable of casting an enchanting glow without being defined by the space in which they reside. Their versatility encourages a well-lived—and stylish—life among the indoors and outdoors alike, a Janus et Cie trademark.

KNOTS LANDING THE PIECES: Criss Cross Outdoor Pillows in Charcoal (far left) and True Blue, and Mr. Rowe Outdoor Pillow in Green/Blue THE DESIGNER: Alex Mason FIND IT: ferrickmason.com THE INSPIRATION: Perennially cool and distinctly fresh are just a few thoughts that come to mind when dreaming about a Ferrick Mason textile, and the same is certainly true with the hip and artful brand’s inaugural outdoor collection. Thoughtfully picked from their existing indoor line, Criss Cross—a simple doodle reinvented into a perfect coordinate—and Mr. Rowe—a masculine design with a twist that was inspired by a dear friend—are the festive outdoor accents you didn’t know you needed.

LX_COM13_Market_Spotlight.indd 170

NAOMI SANDERS LANDSCAPE DESIGNER NAOMISANDERS.COM

At first sight: Alex Mason’s designs are as thoughtful and elegant as they are fresh and playful. Compared to previous collections, however, these patterns are a little more graphic and handsome, inspired by strong geometry over a more whimsical, natural form. As a landscape designer… These accent pillows appeal to me not only for their ability to complement a wide variety of garden styles—traditional, Zen or modern—but they’d also pair well with other patterns, textures and colors. Though a bit more contemporary and universal in style… Both of these patterns bring the art of Japanese shibori to mind, a style and mood that I’m constantly mindful about integrating into outdoor spaces. I’m wholly attracted to… Gardens that combine structured, architectural form with native, seasonal and wild plantings: I’m moved by landscapes that elevate one’s understanding of the natural process.

3/21/17 11:47 AM

SECOND WIND THE PIECE: Maia Relax Armchair THE DESIGNER: Patricia Urquiola FIND IT: kettal.com THE INSPIRATION: Known for its innovative yet stylish handcrafted designs, Barcelona-based Kettal partners only with the best—Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola included. Urquiola’s Relax armchair, part of her Maia collection for the international brand, is infused with modernity and lightness and breaks new ground on archtypical outdoor furnishings through the use of geometric patterns, high-tech braided fibers and a wide aluminum frame. The result is just as stellar as the collaboration itself: an exploration and reimagining of outdoor furniture to a distinctly chicer level.

MATT WITTMAN & JODY ESTES

ARCHITECT AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNER WITTMAN-ESTES.COM

At first sight… Our initial impression of the Maia Relax armchair is one of weightlessness. The chair’s lightness lends a breezy informality that works to balance its sculptural and prismatic form. With a minimal and functional spirit… The chair nevertheless appears comfortable—and almost playful. Like Kettal… We err toward clean, crisp designs that complement modern architecture, so we appreciate how Patricia Urquiola and the brand are mindful of tradition—in both form and material—but smart in cleverly creating fresh pieces that adhere to today’s needs and experiences. On the job: We also enjoy designing spaces that are functional and not overly complicated; we anticipate the movement of the people in it and, rather than attempting to control it, we work with that natural movement and flow. At home: We see this piece living at a tropical resort or in a modern patio setting—not overly structured but intentional, with an abundance of comfort and coolness.

TIGHT ROPE THE PIECE: Custom Plain Weave Shore Rug THE DESIGNER: Louie Rigano and Gil Muller FIND IT: shorerugs.com THE INSPIRATION: London design duo Louie Rigano and Gil Muller consider it their mission to create inspired designs that are as beautiful as they are functional. Their brainchild, Shore Rugs, breaks free from the traditional rug vernacular by using custom-engineered silicone cords to fashion products with a high domestic appeal, indoors and out. Combine that allure with their penchant for brilliant color palettes, like this custom ombre design, and prepare to experience, visually and tangibly, a rug like no other.

RYAN KETTELKAMP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT KETTELKAMP2.COM

At first sight: I was drawn to the chunky, bold weave of this custom rug. It introduces a profoundly noticeable texture into the piece; you immediately sense substance and durability but the interplay of color introduces an artful playfulness. On the job: I particularly like the idea of contrasts in garden designs—wild and exuberant plantings within a formal layout and areas of shade contrasted with open bright sunny spots in a garden—and routinely stress the importance of good lines, ones that pull you into an outdoor environment and beg you to come and explore. It’s important that a well-conceived garden speak to you in this way. Old and new: Shore Rugs’ use of technologically advanced materials in a way that harks back to the long tradition of handwork is admirable. The actual material also communicates an ease of maintenance, which is key for the outdoors. Landscape architecture… Weaves all my interests—science, art, horticulture, craft, design, technology, history and the outdoors—into a cohesive whole, coincidentally not unlike one of these rugs.

JANICE PARKER

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT JANICEPARKER.COM

At first sight: It’s immediately clear how well-crafted these tables are, and beyond that, they read as extremely chic. Dedon’s lines are always visionary and unique, and the same is true of Lorenza Bozzoli’s work. It’s contemporary and very personal; she doesn’t let functionality sacrifice style. Speaking of functionality… This design is just the right height and you can play with configurations. I also love that the tops are natural trays and have drainage slots—versatile and perfect for all things poolside. Mother Nature and the magic of the outdoors… Drew me to landscape design. The natural world has constant change and life cycles. This made sense to me as a child. Of course, once I was deeply engaged, I wanted to play with all the plants and forms and remake reality. Why not a mountain or a lake where there was none? Visually and viscerally… The tables have a lovely lightness to them, and the fact they have three legs reminds me of Noguchi. The art of craft and the love for craft are what this design is all about.

LX_COM13_Market_Spotlight.indd 173

SEA LEVEL THE PIECE: Brixx Side Table Triangular THE DESIGNER: Lorenza Bozzoli FIND IT: dedon.us THE INSPIRATION: As with all things Dedon and all things Lorenza Bozzoli, the Brixx side table, with its sleek powdercoated aluminum top and natural teak legs, elevates the everyday. The Milanese fashion and furniture expert’s marriage with Dedon, and their fine Italian craftsmanship, is nothing short of a refined and understated match made in heaven—resulting in the Brixx table and its collection’s stunning counterparts.

DROP ANCHOR THE PIECE: Windsor Casual Chair THE DESIGNER: Weatherend Estate Furniture FIND IT: weatherend.com THE INSPIRATION: Over a century ago, landscape architect Hans Heistad began designing outdoor landscapes with complementing furniture for seaside properties along the coast of Maine. Among these dreamy coastal estates was Weatherend, and over a hundred years later, Weatherend Estate Furniture continues to produce stately and sophisticated pieces. Using techniques typically found in yacht building, the heritage brand reimagined the Windsor—a contemporary interpretation of the first outdoor chair introduced to America—which celebrates the seating staple’s rich history and ageless design.

EDMUND HOLLANDER

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT HOLLANDERDESIGN.COM

At first sight: I admire the subtle maritime aesthetic that Weatherend often applies to their works. There is something that feels particularly “right” about this design and its exceptional craftsmanship. As a landscape architect… I am especially drawn to the style and flexibility of a design. If you’re going to bring something into your home, indoors or out, these two qualities are paramount. On the job: I greatly enjoy collaborating with designers and architects to create beautiful and environmentally appropriate spaces, ones that harmoniously marry the site and the client, and I feel like this chair would be an easy fit for so many atmospheres. At home: The joinery and overall mood of this piece make the Windsor Casual chair the perfect solution for any space craving an elegant yet rugged piece of furniture. To me, it would seem most at home on a deck overlooking the ocean or atop a posh sailboat or yacht.

WHEN MOTHER NATURE IS THE GUEST OF HONOR IN YOUR HOME’S HARDEST-WORKING SPACES, BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INDOORS AND OUT MELT AWAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

That sunshine and fresh air are a salve for many of life’s ailments is hardly a secret. After all, spending time outdoors is linked to both increased vitamin D production and feelings of happiness. It’s no wonder, then, that designers are bringing nature into the home’s busiest rooms. The latest retractable glass walls and service-style windows blur the line between interior and exterior, providing an often-needed calming connection to the outside world. Whether you’re blessed with a temperate climate yearround, as in Sydney, where this kitchen is located, or you’re forced to make the most of a limited run of good weather, we hope you’ll find inspiration in the following pages. 174 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Sydney’s Smart Design Studio created this open-air kitchen as part of a modern addition to a Federal-style house. Walls of windows and retractable glass doors bring in an abundance of light, which a mirrored backsplash further reflects. As a result, the narrow space feels much larger than it is.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

SMART DESIGN STUDIO Blame it on the mild weather Down Under, but one thing’s for certain when it comes to Australian design: No one does indoor-outdoor spaces quite like the Aussies. Here, interior designer Victoria Judge of Sydney’s Smart Design Studio walks us through this airy minimalist kitchen. smartdesignstudio.com Share your vision. Our climate is conducive to an outdoor lifestyle, and this house facilitates exactly that. The streamlined design features integrated appliances where possible, and the dining table and island are combined to maximize open space. Black-stained timber joinery extends beyond the kitchen to an outdoor eating area.

How much was light a factor in designing this kitchen? The house is on a very narrow plot and surrounded by tall buildings to the south, which forms a kind of cavern, so large windows were important for bringing light into the room. By providing a double-height space in the rear we were able to flood the room in bright light all day long.

PHOTO: SHARRIN REES.

What are some tricks for a seamless indoor-outdoor space? Folding doors are great, allowing rooms to fully open to the outdoors. Opting for a continuous floor finish, such as the travertine used here, between indoors and out helps. By reducing the amount of finishes, you can eliminate visual clutter and the division of spaces.

Elegant fine linens and casual alfresco dining generally don’t mix. Enter oilcloth linen: The durable, waterproof material stands up to spills and splashes and makes a pretty placemat to boot, as in the Parentesi (shown here in Sage) from La Gallina Matta. Its unique shape and delicate embroidery prove that practicality and style can go hand in hand. lagallinamatta.it

To transform a Tuscan-style villa into a modern country home, architect Ken Linsteadt relied on an earthy, natural palette and opened up every room to the surrounding Sonoma, California, landscape. Moving the kitchen to the opposite end of the house so it could face the pool terrace created more of a connection to the outside. “The oversize steel-and-glass windows tilt up, providing an expansive view and easy access to the pool, as well as shade over the bar on a sunny day,” he says. kenlinsteadt.com

COOL & CONNECTED For this modern kitchen, designer Julia Treuel opted for a crisp, monochromatic look that wouldn’t compete with the lush greenery in the backyard. She then installed bifold windows and a servery for a seamless connection to the garden. “Not only is it lovely to have fresh air flowing through this zone, but the house feels larger for it,” says Treuel. abbeycollective.com.au

While the bateau-style soaking tub and lively patterned floor command attention in this striking bath in Cape Town, South Africa, the real draw is the scene just outside the French doors. That’s why designer Kim Stephen kept the palette simple.

One look at this lovely bath designed by interiors talent Kim Stephen, and it’s easy to imagine your daily struggle to get out of bed and start your pre-work routine all but disappearing. Opening onto a private hedged garden with mountain views, it’s the perfect spot for luxuriating in the tub and taking in the gorgeous landscape. “With so much greenery just outside the door, I decided to stick to a palette of black and white to keep it serene,” says Stephen. “Bringing some plant life into the space was also important to underscore the connection to nature, and the lushness of a banana palm seemed the perfect tropical touch,” she says. kimstephen.com

AMERICAN IDYLL Sipping rosÊ on the patio, stealing a nap in a hammock, dining alfresco under the stars—summer provides no shortage of opportunities for simple pleasures. Thanks to the ever-evolving concept of outdoor living, too, warm weather also brings with it more thoughtfully designed spaces to experience those pleasures. Over the last several years, designers have embraced nature in a big way, creating fully loaded outdoor family rooms, elaborate fire pits and wow-worthy pools. Even the once-humble pool house has undergone a dramatic change from utilitarian changing spot to a luxurious destination in itself, as witnessed in this elegant East Hampton, New York, property by Dan Scotti Design. With its sleek silhouette and eye-catching color, the Hestan deluxe freestanding grill is, dare we say, sexy. But its fetching looks aren’t the only draw. Heavyduty burners deliver up to 25,000 BTUs, making it a powerful addition to any backyard barbecue. Amenities such as a whisper-quiet infrared rotisserie burner and motion-activated under-hood lighting are perfect for post-sundown cookouts, and it comes in 12 signature colors, ranging from classic stainless to the lively orange, Citra, shown here. hestanoutdoor.com

OPEN AIR This Malibu, California, retreat was designed to give its owners a sunny respite from harsh winters on the East Coast, where they are based. To take full advantage of the sweeping coastline views, Studio Bracket oriented the house toward the ocean, and opened it up to create a seamless transition from indoors to outside. “The covered exterior spaces become an extension of the living room and kitchen, increasing the footprint and bringing the casual Malibu lifestyle outdoors,” says designer Wayne Chevalier. studiobracket.com

While it’s probably tempting for landscape architects to cover the countryside in vibrant colors, sometimes a more restricted palette is needed. For this Dutch-inspired house in New Canaan, Connecticut, for example, Doyle Herman Design Associates opted for a more earthy, subdued scheme. “Oversize bluestone leads from the kitchen to the dining terrace, while linear gestures of ornamental grasses and hedges of boxwoods play off the contemporary style of this modern farmhouse,” says principal designer Kathryn Herman. dhda.com

IN THE ROUND It’s hard to top the Mad Men-era fabulousness of the Trousdale Estates section of Beverly Hills: After all, Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin once called the midcentury neighborhood home. To honor that history, Los Angeles-based Elysian Landscapes brought a dose of retro glamour to the backyard of a 1959 glass-and-concrete house by creating this showstopper of a fire pit. “The generous banquette was once a low concrete block wall hidden behind a hedge of bamboo, so we increased the height of the wall and hid speakers in the plantings,” says designer Judy Kameon. “Now, it’s a perfect setting for enjoying cool evenings.” Bring on the s’mores… and martinis! elysianlandscapes.com

Thinking outside of the box takes on a new meaning when you actually punch a hole in that box, which is exactly what Australian designer Carole Whiting did to create this cozy nook. By opening up a wall in the living room to make a niche that’s both window and daybed, Whiting invited more light into the space and gave the eventual inhabitants the option of being simultaneously inside and out. “To contrast with the soft, neutral palette indoors, we made the bed black, which further unifies it with the exterior,” says Whiting. whitingarchitects.com

SWING TIME

Perhaps no other perch conveys a playful Bohemian vibe quite like a hanging swing chair. The original bamboo version of this porch staple was designed by Giovanni Travasa in 1958, but the style really caught on in the freewheeling ’60s and ’70s when natural materials were all the rage. Tidelli’s new Painho swing here, designed by Rosenbaum e o Fetiche, is made with nautical rope and high-grade aluminum for indoor or outdoor use and comes in an impressive array of summertime colors—52 to be exact. tidelli.com

LOOKING GLASS

Minimalist architecture demands clean lines, so it’s no wonder the latest technological advancements in glass walls allow for bigger expanses and slimmer frames and stiles. Cero, the newest floor-to-ceiling sliding wall system from NanaWall, boasts the thinnest profile yet, giving way to light-filled spaces that challenge the conventional notions of boundaries between indoors and out. nanawall.com

VIEW TO A THRILL What can compete with a typical Wine Country meal of farm-to-table food and excellent vino? A killer view, of course—like the one at this Healdsburg, California, family ranch designed by Ali Davin of San Francisco-based firm Jute. “To draw the eye outside, we intentionally kept the furnishings sparse so they wouldn’t distract from the scenery,” she says. “The wood ceiling, concrete walls, stone floors, metal chairs and linen curtains keep the look rustic and understated, while Rose Uniacke’s dining table made of pippy oak helps anchor the space and tie it to the natural landscape.” jutehome.com

ANTHONY’S PATIO Austin | Texas | 512.263.5115 | anthonyspatio.com

The outdoor furniture industry has changed dramatically over the last decade due to the increasing product options and aesthetic ranges available on the market today. That’s where Anthony and Jayne Muscariello step in. As owners of Anthony’s Patio, they offer best-inclass options across all outdoor furniture categories. “Because we represent some of the best furniture lines in the industry and have the experience to put unique solutions together, we offer something you just can’t get at any other outdoor furniture store,” Anthony says. “There are a lot of materials to choose from, so knowing which are appropriate for a given setting is where our product knowledge comes in.” Working with the end goal of form, function and practicality, Anthony’s Patio pulls together visually appealing spaces with a focus on usability. “I want every product we sell to last as long as possible with minimal maintenance and to never end up in a landfill,” Jayne says.

EUROPE’S INFLUENCE ON OUTDOOR LIVING

Outdoor furniture will make or break even the most well-designed outdoor space.

Europeans have always focused on outdoor living, and since covered patios are very uncommon there, they tend to make very durable and easy-to-use furniture. The emergence of more European suppliers stateside has brought new options to market. DEDON has always been a leader, but there are a lot of other manufacturers coming on the scene, like Varaschin, Cane-line, Point and others. Dekton is a new slab-based synthetic stone from Spain that mimics natural materials and establishes new aesthetic boundaries for tabletops.

BWERKS Austin | Texas | 512.649.4040 | bwerksluxurypools.com

Scott Bauerle, principal of BWERKS, prides himself on thinking outside the box to build the best pools and outdoor spaces within his clients’ budgets. “Everyone has a different way of relaxing and enjoying the outdoors,” he says. “So every space should be specifically tailored to the individual client.” Going above and beyond is the norm for Bauerle and his team, who never settle on working with what the market offers, but rather, innovate by creating specialty products and finishes most have never seen or realized could be made. The same approach applies with clients. “Our philosophy is based on listening to the needs of the customer, then rewarding them with a design that not only answers their needs, but creates an environment they never could have imagined,” he says. Not surprisingly, inspiration comes easy to Bauerle, who looks forward to the new advancements and innovations in the industry.

POOL TALK WITH SCOTT BAUERLE How important is it to have a cohesive style throughout an outdoor space? Our No. 1 priority is listening to our customers’ needs. While some like cohesiveness, others allow us to think outside the box and mix different styles. How has the movement toward more environmentally friendly living influenced your work? Whether it be energy-efficient equipment, permeable surfaces, eco-friendly materials or water conservation, we stay up to date on the latest trends and technology. How have things changed in your industry in the past 10 years? Automation has made the pool industry more fun and enjoyable, with unique effects, from LED lighting to fire and water features that can set any mood at the touch of a button.

We do not design with products; we design to achieve goals, then figure out which products serve the purpose.

1. & 3. Function meets style in this pool area with an infinity-edge, stone beach entry and an oversize spa. The lighting, fire and color combination sets the tone for pure relaxation. 2. To keep the lake view uninterrupted, Bauerle and his team created a sunken sitting area with a fire pit for guests to enjoy. Textured concrete coping surrounds the pool and runs between the adjacent spa.

DURANGO DOORS Austin | Texas | 512.563.1670 | durangodoors.com

When designing outdoor spaces, the transition from the indoors to out is often one of the most important design decisions. “A welldesigned outdoor space should feel like an extension of the internal living space, so creating easy access to indoor conveniences is key,” say John and Natalie Gibbs, owners of Durango Doors. In business for nearly 20 years, Durango Doors continues to be an innovative company, developing custom pivot, folding and sliding doors, as well as window systems from its signature steel. “Technology, design and energy efficiency have played a big role in the evolution of our industry,” John says. “We’ve adapted our steel to meet and exceed energy requirements, while continuing to deliver a beautifully handcrafted product, keeping out unwanted elements while blending indoor and outdoor living.”

2

Durango’s handcrafted steel is a piece of artwork, but remains inviting, functional and easy to use.

HOW TO ‘STEEL’ THE VIEW The trend of clean lines, minimalism and functional spaces inspires Durango Doors to further develop its steel and create more possibilities for clients. Designs incorporating floor-to-ceiling window walls, large folding units and sliding doors are exciting for Durango Doors. Steel is not typically manufactured in this way, so creating ways to achieve these designs with steel is rewarding. Another favorite of Durango Doors is its corner unit; working with architects to design a continuous wall of steel with fluid transitions around corners is a lot of fun and produces a beautiful product.

1. Large-scale corner units line the back patio, creating beautiful architectural pieces and never-ending sight lines. 2. EDEN GARDEN DESIGN Westlake Hills | Texas | 512.983.1110 | edenaustin.com

When approaching any outdoor project, landscape architectural firm Eden Garden Design not only focuses on the beauty of the landscape but also its function. “Function can mean, for example, plants that help with stormwater management, are used in cooking, or attract pollinators,” co-owner Sarah Yant says. “Monarch butterfly way stations are even trending.” But “what’s trending now” is a mainstay for the firm, which has been recognized for its locally sourced and sustainable approach since opening in 2009. “We craft modern-inspired gardens rooted in the central Texas landscape, using native and adapted vegetation and an honest hardscape palette,” says in-house landscape architect Aaron Odland, who finds inspiration in low-impact development. When it comes to process, the firm is keen on collaboration, and cohesiveness when it comes to style. “The best outdoor living projects use smart design and innovative materials to unite a building with its terrain,” co-owner Amy Hovis says.

TO-DO LIST FOR OUTDOOR SUCCESS 1. Assemble your team as early as you can and allow time for the design process. 2. Find a designer you can trust to make the right decisions. 3. Create separate lists that outline what you want to achieve, including the following: + How you plan to use your outdoor space + What colors and types of plants you’re drawn to + Outdoor spaces that have inspired you This type of intel helps produce a layered, meaningful outdoor space.

Proper maintenance is one of the pillars of a beautiful garden, along with thoughtful design, and quality installation and construction.

KEITH ZARS POOLS San Antonio | Texas | 512.900.1837 | keithzarspools.com

When it comes to outdoor living, patio and pool areas immediately come to mind … relaxing and swimming in an oasis of backyard tranquility. In the world of water, much has changed with the times: new energy-efficient lighting options; new finishes, like glass bead and ceramic tile that mimics wood; and fire bowls with water features for dramatic effect. While a more rugged aesthetic used to define Texas Hill Country outdoor design, Keith Zars, owner of Keith Zars Pools, notices a growing appreciation for more minimalist features—an approach that works for the firm’s “less is more” philosophy. “Repeating materials, colors and elements creates continuity,” he says. With an eye for meticulous and stunning designs, the company’s landscape architects create a personalized experience that embodies the customer’s vision, inside and out.

We are here for our clients long after the water fills the pool.

1

WHY KEITH ZARS POOLS?

1. Soft landscaping edges this pool, giving it the look and feel of a serene mountain pond. 2. Straight lines, corners and edges create a complementary contrast in this natural setting, where raised pillars, and water and fire features accentuate the style. 3. Cascading waters is the theme of this pool, featuring a spa that spills over the infinity edge. 4. To the left of this clean-lined, geometric pool is a canyon outlook for adult entertaining.

“First, our people are our main distinction,” Zars says. “We have 350 dedicated employees who take pride in their work. Second, our advanced circulation system. The system mechanically cleans the water by using a pre-filter system, then the water passes through a 3-micron filter before it is ozonated. All of these steps allow the pool owner to use less chemicals to treat the water. Third, and most importantly, our attention to detail is legendary. We will not accept a client’s final payment until they are completely satisfied.”

TEXAS SUN & SHADE Austin | Texas | 512.402.0990 | txsunandshade.com

With the growing trend toward indoor-outdoor living, the definition of the “living area” has expanded. Speaking to this, Texas Sun & Shade principals Ben and Gudrun Skoldeberg share that extending the living area with large retractable walls to connect indoor-outdoor spaces is a top trend. “Motorized, retractable insect screens complement these areas by protecting the space from insects and providing temperature control,” Ben says. With comfort and flexibility paramount, Texas Sun & Shade accommodates with numerous sun control options, including motorized solar shades, privacy shades and retractable shading systems. As the move toward motorization and energy savings continues, retractable shading systems have found their place, protecting from the heat or retracting during cooler months for natural heating. Sustainable materials and environmentally conscious manufacturing have also made their way into most modern systems. “For 30 years, we have provided the latest shading technology trends backed by leading global brands,” Gudrun says.

TRENDING … MOTORIZED PRODUCTS Motorized products have become the norm in custom home design and build-outs. These retractable systems are now easily integrated into automated technologies, giving homeowners the modern convenience they seek. Motorized retractable shades can be equipped with sun, wind, motion and rain sensors, or even automated timers. THE GARDEN DESIGN STUDIO Austin | Texas | 512.385.0011 | gardendesignstudio.us

Landscape architecture firm The Garden Design Studio typically begins every project with the clients’ wish list. “That gives us insight into how they want to live in the space,” principal landscape architect Bill Bauer says. As for influences that drive the ultimate aesthetic, he and his team defer to the architecture. Placing comfort, convenience and the right scale at the center of every well-designed space, Bauer takes a less is more approach, editing to consider durability, budget and how each material benefits the overall design. Not surprisingly, the firm continues to see clients striving for more opportunities to live outdoors, be it through a summer kitchen, fire pit or other gathering area. “In our climate, engagement with nature is a wonderful bonus,” he says. “A simple gravel terrace with a great view, a good meal and a nice breeze always inspires.”

The landscape blends and grounds a home’s architecture to the land. It should be an outreach and a companion of each, and should serve both equally.

2

1

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE OF LANDSCAPING “Design and modeling software like SketchUp has really changed how we design and present information, and has also greatly impacted the nature and speed of design in a big way,” Bauer says. “In terms of sourcing plants, everything is online now, so you can show pictures to clients of every plant that is going into a garden without ever having to leave the office. Also, more and more, we are seeing certain systems, such as pools and lighting, moving toward automation with application tools that give clients the ultimate flexibility in terms of use and control.”

T

he Dallas residence father-son builders Mickey Munir and Michael Munir constructed for residential designer Robert Trown showcases more than just one easily recognizable style. The Mediterranean-inspired structure mixes influences from France, Portugal and Spain with a crisp white rubble-set limestone exterior, a triple-stacked red-tile roof, a U-shaped courtyard and large expanses of minimalist black steel-framed windows. “It’s also a California-style blend in the sense that it reflects an indoor-outdoor attitude,” Trown says. But the beautiful mélange is actually part of a trend Trown has noticed emerging from his own clients. “In the past, many Dallas homeowners would say, ‘I want an English Tudor’ or, ‘I want a Marie Antoinette château,’ ” he says. Now, rather than a specific look, many request “a blended and collected feel,” he explains. In Trown’s case, the goal for his home’s architectural style was to allow the house to grow and adapt over time. The home’s West Coast reference is particularly personal, as he and his wife, Yvonne, grew up in Southern California before spending 17 years in Aspen, Colorado. The ski resort town was a lovely place to raise two children, but the convenience of a larger city appealed to the couple when they became empty nesters. “Everything is so accessible here, and the people were a huge draw,” Trown says. So they sold their Aspen house and purchased a vacant 1.25acre lot in Dallas’ Preston Hollow neighborhood, known for its grand homes and curbless streets. Working with his colleague and project manager, Whitney Blackwelder, Trown designed, landscaped and furnished his new residence the Munir duo constructed. “It is rare for one architecture firm to handle all design facets of a project, including interiors and landscaping—which helped here, because there was one vision,” Michael Munir says. For his new abode, Trown prioritized creating a sense of seclusion. He sited the house on a north-south axis, which increases energy efficiency while also controlling

the views and maximizing privacy. This was a must for one of the home’s most romantic features, an outdoor Belgian blue limestone shower area off the second-floor master suite. The setup “allows bathroom views of the outdoors with no need for window coverings,” Trown says. Because of the home’s axis, most of the major windows also face southeast and peek out to the lush landscaping. Nestling his home amongst numerous massive oaks, magnolias and cedars, Trown explains he “landscaped away the neighbors” by filling empty spaces with a rich plant palette of native drought-resistant foliage such as palms and succulents. “Miraculously, we didn’t need to take out anything,” he says, adding that the mature trees, when used in conjunction with new plant material, give the landscape a look of having existed for many years. Along with layers of plantings, Trown incorporated various outdoor living spaces, including a motor court inside the front gates, an outdoor kitchen pavilion, a terraced courtyard and a privet-rimmed pool. Because of the home’s U shape, prominent windows from the main living spaces face the courtyard, which gives the homeowners more privacy, Trown explains. “We can have tons of glass with no window coverings and all that heavy drapery that used to be very popular,” he says. “All those swags and tiebacks—gone.” Should the couple need more privacy, however, integral solar shades—hidden above black steel-frame windows recessed within the walls—deploy at the touch of a button. In addition to privacy, Trown also wanted to emphasize telling a story through the home’s construction, “rather than relying on trims and finishes to make the design interesting,” he says. Free of window frames, jambs and baseboards, the house showcases reclaimed oak floors and rafter beams—cleaned but not painted or stained—harvested from decommissioned barns in upstate New York. Trown also credits the Munirs for approaching products in new ways. For example, the duo produced the home’s doublethick walls by mixing paint into plaster to create a soft rolling surface with just a bit of mottling. “The color was mixed in as it was applied,” Michael Munir says. The walls serve as a backdrop to the mix of furnishings that reflects the homeowners’ eclectic tastes and Trown’s years of experience in designing houses for clients around the world. “Dealers know the kinds of pieces we like and send us pictures all the time,” he says. But when Trown can’t locate what he wants, he customizes a piece from a showroom line or designs it himself—like a table in the living room made from a walnut tree that had blown down during a storm on a nearby farm. The overall result shows off a collaboration of not only styles but also talents between Trown and the Munir team. “This was one of the best and most inspiring homes we have had the pleasure of working on,” Mickey Munir says. That sentiment is also true for the homeowner, who drew upon his skill and experience to achieve the ideal mix of architecture, landscaping and interior design for his residence. “Yvonne and I love living in the home,” he says. “Once we enter the property, we are in our own world.”

handeliers should be works of personal expression,” says Jim Palmer, the lighting director at Pettigrew Luxury Furnishings in Dallas. He’s speaking from experience: He once designed a chandelier using a client’s heirloom jewelry and keepsakes. “She brought me boxes of diamonds, pearl necklaces, vintage costume jewelry, watches and even dog tags to incorporate into a fixture,” he recalls. Through Palmer’s expert eye for layering, the piece became a beautiful homage to the client’s family and wound up as a focal point in the dining room as a regular reminder of her loved ones, as if they were joining her for dinner. Palmer compares his style of layering in lighting design to arranging flowers in a bouquet. And for good reason—before his transition into lighting 30 years ago, he spent a decade as a floral designer. “As with arranging flowers, I choose which crystals are most prominent and start building backwards,” he says, noting he often builds around the client’s favorite prisms. For Palmer, who refers to his creations as “nonperishable flower arrangements,” this process is both intuitive and meditative. “If I went blind, I think I could put a chandelier together by touch alone,” he laughs. “My hands never get tired. When I work, I slip into a warm and fuzzy place.” Of course, in many cases, clients don’t provide Palmer with materials to use, so he has perfected the art of sourcing crystal and glass both locally— including from the studios of Dallas glass artists

Aaron Thane Tate and Carlyn Ray—and from around the world. When one client requested nearly 140 customized chandeliers and lanterns, the lighting designer looked to the Czech Republic, Austria, China and Brazil for the jade, garnet, rose quartz, amethyst and rock crystal needed to fashion many of the fairy tale-like aviary and exotic bird-inspired ornamentations. “I even spent time in Egypt overseeing the construction of a chandelier frame,” Palmer says. His efforts culminated with pieces befitting in both scale and glamour to the Dallas-born customer’s residence in Hollywood, California. Not surprisingly, Palmer’s studio over the years has become a cave of wonders replete with thousands of lighting materials, all organized into boxes and cabinets. For his collections of crystal and glass, the lighting

LX_TX46_SM_Palmer.indd 237

designer tends to prefer hand-cut and handpolished pieces over perfect, machine-cut varieties. “They create a look that is luminous but fades more into the background,” he says, lauding the subtlety and nuances of handmade prisms. “That way, it doesn’t immediately draw your attention to the chandelier on the ceiling.” It is this ongoing impetus to locate and layer together the ideal amalgam of crystal, glass or any number of other embellishments that has earned Palmer his reputation as a lighting virtuoso. “While glass and crystals don’t change,” he says, “how you use them can change quite dramatically.” With some expert help, even an outdated chandelier can receive new life and light the way to personal expression. “It’s always there for you to work with—over and over again,” Palmer says.

avid and Melissa Rubin knew a few trade-offs would be inevitable when they decided to move their family from a large house in the suburbs to a high-rise apartment near parks, restaurants and music venues in burgeoning downtown Austin. Although content with having a little less square footage to experience the excitement of urban living, there were two things they were not willing to sacrifice: a sense of comfort and a fullsize billiards table. “During college, people would often call the pool hall looking for me,” David says. “I spent a lot of time in school playing pool, poker and chess, and I still do on a regular basis.” To preserve the Rubins’ familiar luxuries of home in their new abode, the couple enlisted the help of designer Mark Cravotta, architect Christopher Sanders—who had contributed to the design of the building itself—and builder David Wilkes. At first glance, the high-rise didn’t appear to have the space to accommodate David’s love of billiards. But Cravotta found a clever workaround, customizing a blackened mahogany billiards table—in collaboration with United Kingdom-based Hamilton Billiards—that easily

LX_TX46_HOM_Cravotta_12.indd 241

converts into a dining table, paired with Jim Zivic Design folding chairs. To ensure minimum clearances for the cue, Cravotta and Sanders replaced a standard stud-framed wall with a thinner steel-framed alternative installed by Wilkes that showcases colored glass panes arranged in a Mondrianinspired design. “We fired sketches back and forth until we finalized the pattern,” Sanders says, adding that this process was a favorite memory from his collaborations with Cravotta during the project. An additional detail in the dining-meets-billiards room is the subtly domed ceiling with polished Venetian plaster, which supports a custom chandelier by Codor Design that lowers for game-play spot lighting at the touch of a button. The plaster adds texture and helps define the area within the residence’s open layout, contributing to the homelike feel the Rubins desired. “The plaster is an organic application with a softness perceived differently from wherever you view it in the room,” explains Sanders, who brought on project manager Jena Hammond and project designer Amy Ulmer. “We worked hard to define spaces and often used the ceilings to do that when there were no partitions.”

Ceiling fixtures by The Urban Electric Co. and a backsplash of glasscovered Missoni Home fabric from Urbanspace Interiors complement sleek kitchen cabinetry. Atop DuChâteau flooring, barstools by Powell & Bonnell from Dennis Miller Associates—in Theo leather from Allan Knight and Associates—line Silestone countertops. A Glen Hansen piece from Miami Beach-based Fischbach Gallery hangs to the left. Builder David Wilkes constructed the highly lacquered ceiling panels.

The ceiling treatment in the open kitchen is another example. Dropped 18 inches and clad with highly lacquered dark blue panels, it defines the space and draws in light from the northern exposure. “We spent a lot of time both on-site and in the fabrication shop to pull off that ceiling,” Wilkes says, emphasizing the difficulty of the design. “We had to be very careful not to scratch the panels while on-site, because that meant we’d have to send them back to the shop to be resprayed.” Elsewhere in the kitchen, faceted flush-mount ceiling fixtures lend a traditional touch. “They are like jewels hanging from the highly reflective automotive-finish ceiling,” Cravotta says. “There’s a feeling of home and a sense of intimacy.” A punch of color is found over the cooktop in the dynamic backsplash, which consists of woven and embroidered Missoni Home fabric under glass. In the nearby living area, a wood ceiling framed with a thin line of blackened steel and a section of exposed concrete wall interject an urban sensibility, while a thick sisal rug and plush furnishings maintain a high level of comfort. “The clients have always lived in traditional houses, and although they were finished with that, they didn’t want to give up soft fabrics or furniture evoking relaxation,” Cravotta says. With that in mind, he also decorated the master suite with a silk rug and a wool fabric wall, which balances the adjoining glossy white walls. Cast-bronze pendants flanking the bed add a unique lighting effect. “It has a luminescent quality,” the designer says. “The space glows with daylight, and at night it has a moody feeling that reflects the warmer artificial lights.”

The quality of light was also critical to create warmth and functionality in David’s office, a converted storage closet. Illuminated steel-and-wood shelving extends to an exposed concrete wall and incorporates a pair of plumbing pipes discovered during the renovation that the team wrapped with leather. “They look very intentional and integrated,” David says. “When Mark and Chris face a challenge, they turn it into something spectacular. It was fun to see it all come together.” European oak floor planks travel up the wall behind the desk, onto the ceiling and down the wall on the other side, continuing the effort to create welldefined spaces throughout the home. From working with the design team, the Rubins also developed a new interest: art collecting. “We are ‘accidental’ art collectors,” Melissa says. “Through the process and with Mark’s guidance, we now have a great collection.” Their new home includes pieces by artists such as Morris Broderson, on display in the living room, and Glen Hansen, decorating the kitchen. Happily ensconced in their fresh and modern high-rise apartment, the Rubins now fully take advantage of city life, walking the five short blocks to work, dining at new restaurants and taking in shows at the music venue just downstairs. “This will be our twelfth home in 25 years,” David says, “and it’s our favorite yet.”

nce upon a time, in a rural bastide in the South of France, there was a farmhouse kitchen with a mélange of terra-cotta and rose-colored ceiling tiles that infused the space with a warm, cozy glow. One hundred years later, those same tiles traveled 6,000 miles to be reincarnated in the ceiling of yet another kitchen, this time in a new Provençal-style Houston residence. According to designer Meg Lonergan, it was details such as these tiles—coupled with integrated color stucco walls, a door surround carved from 18th-century French limestone and the symmetry of perfectly shaped boxwoods lining a gravel walkway—that had everyone talking about the spec house on the corner. “It was all the buzz around town,” she recalls. “It was not your usual spec home, and everyone was wondering whom it was for.” Curiosity continued to mount as builder Marvin Morris and partner Steve Hullinger–who handled the home’s architectural design and construction–forged ahead without posting a For Sale sign. “We wanted to create the classic, romantic, collected feel of Provence and see it through without anyone questioning what we were doing,” Morris says. “We also wanted there to be a sense of timelessness and a mixture of old and new that implied the house evolved over centuries.” Making that happen mandated several trips to the French countryside, where Morris handpicked every stone and filled three 40-foot containers with items sourced specifically for this project. “The star of the house is the roof,” he says, referring to the blend of reclaimed 18th-century tiles purchased from a vendor near Avignon. “The mix of pinks, yellows and oranges sets the tone.”

The meticulous attention to detail continues inside with hand-troweled mottled plaster walls. “They are a truly living, breathing entity,” says Morris, who also designed a traditional checkerboard entry-floor-with-a-twist by mixing 18th-century tile from Lyon with pristine white Austin limestone to reinforce the idea of layering over time. Similarly, the home’s wine room is clad with ancient limestone on the walls and enclosed with 21st-century glass doors. As all this work was being done, phone calls inquiring about viewing the project were pouring in—including a few from a young couple with one child, who have since welcomed a second. “We finally convinced Marvin and Steve to let us sneak in and see it,” the wife says. Once they were inside, the sight of reshaped 18th-century oak ceiling beams and antique fireplace surrounds only enhanced the couple’s longing, and their initial meeting with the builders proved providential. “For some reason they liked us, and we bought the house right away,” the wife laughs. Serendipitously for Lonergan, the new owners were previous clients who immediately tapped her to outfit the interiors. “Meg was the natural choice,” the wife says. “She already knew our taste, and she and my husband even went to high school together in Singapore.” All agreed they should follow the established contemporary-meetsold-world theme. Calling on her signature ability to mingle different genres, Lonergan juxtaposed the living room’s vintage sofa upholstered in velvet from the couple’s previous home with the modern lines of iron-framed armchairs. In lieu of color, she layered textures through shagreenwrapped side tables, waxed-linen draperies and a soft

wool-and-silk Tibetan rug. “The homeowners wanted to marry their different aesthetics, and the variety of materials was one way to balance the masculine and feminine,” the designer says. In response to the wife’s desire to keep the interiors neutral-colored and kid-friendly, the predominantly white family room features washable-linen-slipcovered sofas and a massive concrete coffee table, both meant to prevent things from seeming too precious. “This is a relaxed space where you can put up your feet,” Lonergan says. Elsewhere in the home, the designer answered the husband’s request for Oriental accents, inspired by his years living in Singapore, through deep blue leather on the kitchen-counter stools and antique Chinese nightstands in the master bedroom. The yin and yang continue in the dining room, where Lonergan stepped beyond Houston’s borders to procure the expansive oval travertine table with a cast-bronze base by New York’s Egg Collective and surrounded it with chairs unearthed from a 1950s London hotel. “I’m driven to find things that aren’t typical to the area and that haven’t been used before,” she explains. When it came to artwork, Lonergan delivered with modern pieces offering an invigorating contrast to the oldworld backdrop. In the family room, for example, a painting by artist Gregory Hayes is a colorful counterpoint for the stone fireplace, and in the dining room a sculptural painting by Donald Martiny—whose work also hangs at One World Trade Center in New York—is a breathtaking foil for the wall of antiqued mirror glass. “Meg was able to find things to suit my personality that I never would have discovered on my own,” the wife says, continuing with high praise for the entire team. “If I were building a home myself, this is exactly what I would have done. It’s absolutely perfect.”

A NIGHT FOR PRESERVATION

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TARA BLASKA PHOTOGRAPHY

During Modernism Week in Palm Springs, California, Luxe Interiors + Design celebrated A Night for Preservation with Save Iconic Architecture (SIA Projects). Founded by Los Angeles-based design duo Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield of Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design, SIA Projects champions the fight to preserve significant architecture as art and aims to protect, preserve, educate and celebrate architectural integrity and cultural heritage. On February 19th, over 150 design and style influencers descended upon the architecturally significant Hotel Lautner, designed by midcentury pioneer John Lautner, to celebrate SIA’s mission to preserve iconic architecture and design. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres by Liquid Catering and creative cocktails by buzzbox. Coyote and iBBQ prepared and served specialty meats and grilled vegetables from their exquisite grills, and Jenn-Air kept the party buzzing with espresso samples from its state-of-the-art kitchen. Nourison, York Wallcoverings and Jenn-Air provided silent auction items benefiting SIA Projects, and support for the organization was also extended by Snyder Diamond, Robert Allen, S. Harris, Theodore Alexander, Diane James and the gracious hosts at Hotel Lautner.

HOME AUTOMATION

DONNY CARLYON + PIERRE CLOUTIER HAAS Home Technologies 500 West 5th Street, Suite 1010 Austin, Texas 512.831.3667 info@haasht.com haasht.com At first glance, an Austin-based tech enthusiast with a passion for design and engineering partnering with a French Canadian who has a background in international business and finance may seem out of the ordinary. For Donny Carlyon and Pierre Cloutier, founders of HAAS Home Technologies, it makes perfect sense. Entrepreneurs to the core, Carlyon explains that while they were brought together by what they have in common, it is their differences that set them apart when it comes to running a successful business. “Recognizing how to cross-utilize our experience has been a game changer for HAAS, and together we have an incredible advantage. It is the perfect partnership,” he says. While HAAS may be a new firm, they are in an envious position. Boasting an impressive roster of clientele and equally impressive plans for growth, Carlyon and Cloutier are clearly skilled in making a lasting impression.

An unlikely partnership with uncommon results.

What led you to your current profession? Cloutier: The intersection of knowing what we are good at and what we love. Donny has spent 15 years learning every aspect of this industry. I’m a Montreal native; my background is in finance and international business. When we looked at our skills and saw how much we shared an enthusiasm for this industry, the decision to start our own company was obvious. How would you describe the personality of your business? Carlyon: Sophisticated, meticulous and disruptive are the first three words that come to mind. We have high standards for ourselves, our team and the experience our clients have. While we take every aspect of what we do seriously, we also have a lot of fun challenging convention. What is the soul of your brand? What drives your beliefs? Cloutier: The soul of our brand is rooted in marrying a true design firm with that of an industry-leading home technologies firm. Our philosophy: remain committed to our culture, curate stellar professionals, and deliver the highest standards in client experience. How do you stay abreast of new trends and styles? Carlyon: We look to technology, design and the arts, as you never know what will spark an idea for innovation.

The technology selected for this Westlake Hills, Texas, residence—a truly integrated home—showcases the perfect balance of symmetry and sophistication.

AUS46_Profiles_Haas_0309.indd 1

What do you strive to create when you’re working on a project? Cloutier: Our goal is to deliver experiences beyond expectation. HAAS approaches projects in a dramatically different way; we admit to obsessing about every detail, from beginning to end, and that’s what sets us apart.

HOME BUILDERS + REMODELERS

Ask the Expert What are your favorite styles to work on and why? Midcentury modern architecture is fascinating to me, but at times is challenging to build. We are developing a new style that we are calling New Century Modern, which is inspired by this aesthetic but brings in the latest in building science and forwardthinking design.

Brett Ames Principal Austin, Texas 512.879.6333 info@amesdesignbuild.com amesdesignbuild.com

AMES DESIGN BUILD

With a portfolio of projects spanning the most prestigious neighborhoods Austin has to offer, including Lake Austin, Westlake, Barton Creek and Spanish Oaks, Ames Design Build has garnered a welldeserved reputation as one of the most sought-after design-build firms in the area. Innovation, quality, integrity and restraint: Those are the cornerstones upon which Brett Ames built his eponymous firm, renowned for integrating the natural surroundings of each project, which is one aspect of the creative process for which Ames is quite passionate. “I love the Austin tapestry,” he says. “I love the hills, trees and water. I am inspired every day to build amazing projects in this environment. I love the freedom of Texas architecture.” It is this rich landscape that inspires each project. “We aim to create a cohesive design, with no detail left behind, but it all starts with the land,” Ames says. “The land is our canvas and from there we begin to sketch the dreams of the client. It is always an act of balancing the dreams of the clients with the constraints of the lot and building process.” While land plays a signature role in the design phase, communication is integral to the success of each project. “We prefer to be involved with a project from the first substantive conversation between a client and an architect. This allows us to fully integrate the constructability and budgeting into every phase of the design process,” Ames explains. “We ultimately want to create a process and flow of information that allows for an enjoyable project for everyone involved.”

How do you define a successful project? The owner still loves you 10 years later. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? A design that takes advantage of its environment—every aspect of the home is planned around how to maximize the value given by the land.

What do you regard as the greatest success in your career to date? With the company vertically integrated, from the quarry to distribution, Levantina not only produces and sells natural stone, but also provides solutions to market demands and trends. We do it all.

LEVANTINA

The name Levantina has been synonymous with innovation and quality for more than 50 years in the natural stone industry. The multinational company, of Spanish origin, owns and operates 40 quarries globally, through which it distributes its leading product, Crema Marfil. Bringing many of the world’s finest and most unique stones to Austin, including quartzite, marble, granite, soapstone, onyx, limestone and travertine, Levantina offers the design community and homeowners alike a one-of-a-kind stone selection experience in its contemporary showroom and state-of-the-art warehouse. Operating upon the premise that “picking your own slab is like picking a piece of artwork,” Levantina’s public showroom is designed so visitors can learn the origins of the products, how they were made and what they will look like in an interior space. “We have a beautiful showroom, and when clients walk in, they are amazed by the different colors and styles of our stones,” sales promoter Andria Preas says. “Here, we encourage clients to individually pick their own stone. It’s an exciting process that they will always remember as they see their handpicked stone in their home.” A strong collaborator with the Austin design community, Levantina recently established the Designer Rewards Program, a monetary rewards-based platform for designers who choose Levantina as their preferred stone supplier. Marketing manager Ashlea Orton explains, “The Designer Rewards Program recognizes our loyal designers and hopefully brings new designers in to see our exquisite natural stone.”

We supply natural stone from the quarry and transform it into natural beauty for your home. Describe the philosophy behind your firm. AUS46_Profiles_CaptiveAudio.indd 1

Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? A good design is a creative and customized solution that serves its purpose, matches the space and meets the client’s expectations. It must be functional, reliable and aesthetically pleasing. What are you working on next? We are always looking for the next movement for our business. We test new products regularly and think critically about system design concepts. It requires research and hands-on training to figure out how best to move forward in an ever-changing industry.

GOLD LIST 2017

Luxe Interiors + Design celebrated its 5th annual signature Gold List celebration at the stunning Holly Hunt showroom in Miami’s Design District. This year’s Gold List celebrated nearly 600 trade professionals from across the country, including interior designers, architects, home builders and landscape architects whose projects were featured in the pages of the magazine. Honorees representing all 13 markets traveled to Miami to celebrate with Luxe’s Editor in Chief, Pamela Jaccarino, with guests enjoying an evening of live entertainment, Cuban-inspired cuisine and libations. A special thank you to our sponsors Art + Alchemy, Baldwin Hardware, Caesarstone, California Closets, Downright, Eggersmann USA, Fleetwood Windows & Doors, High Point Market, Hubbardton Forge, L’ Atelier Miami Beach and Marc Phillips Decorative Rugs.
