Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting. “The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic. Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”

oes beauty matter? I recently listened as a designerfriend reflected on the perception by many that decorative pursuits can feel like a frivolous concern. Certainly practical matters of daily life—the commute
to the office, the contract awaiting signature, the phone call you need to return—can eclipse our quotidian attentiveness to art and beauty. With designer Jamie Drake at the Flexform showroom in New York.
I would encourage, however, that each of us make time to thoughtfully observe and pursue beauty, art and design in earnest, and tend to it often. Beauty, as expressed through architecture and design, has a profound impact on our consciousness. Structures and façades, space planning, landscaping, interiors, furniture, lighting, and art offer up a daily dose of inspiration, inciting emotions and reactions: delight and

awe, uneasiness and disquiet, serenity, wonderment, and reflection. Beauty lurks everywhere: in the minutiae of a peony petal and in the grand force of Frank Gehry’s DZ Bank in Berlin, which I stood in awe of earlier this year. Far from being flippant, beauty is an expression of creativity that grounds us. We should care deeply about the placement of a chair, the color of a wall, the pattern repeat of a textile. Pay attention, readers. Beauty matters.

DISTINCTIVE DÉCOR
Reflective of an ardent focus on Spanish Colonial design with a Mediterranean influence, the layout of this Paradise Valley home’s outdoor living spaces are anything but ordinary. A collaborative project between Scottsdale-based interior designer Wendy Black Rodgers and Phoenix landscape architect Chad Robert, this specific vignette boasts a unique assemblage of hardscape materials, plantings and outdoor furnishings and accents. Such components include a custom-designed cantera stone fountain, saltillo tile with Mexican pebble insets, an antiquarian light fixture from Morocco and a decorative shade structure wrapped with vine. “We endeavored to showcase an eclectic style, achieved through a distinctive selection of ornamental accents and landscape elements,” Black Rodgers says. www.wbrint.com

Landscape designer Elizabeth Montgomery chose to meld a Southwest aesthetic with exotic Turkish flair when staging the design of this Tucson area abode’s exterior spaces. To tie the areas together, Montgomery employed a unique mix of décor: sunburst light fixtures from Mexico, locally handcrafted pillows and a custom stucco and mosaic sofa from her own shop, Boxhill Design. For the foliage, Montgomery selected a resilient palette of greenery, incorporating golden barrel cactus, firecracker lantana and desert marigold. “Through a vibrant mix of materials and a diverse blend of plantings,” Montgomery says, “I was able to evoke a style I like to call ‘barefoot luxury.’ ” boxhilldesign.com; shopboxhill.com

COASTAL CHIC Dynamic shapes and strong lines unite to present Foreside Home and Garden’s latest selection of outdoor furniture and accents. Originally established in the early 1990s by husband-and-wife team Claire and Mark Woodsum, the brand continues to evoke a charming coastal aesthetic by virtue of a mixed palette of materials and textures. Featured here, the recently introduced Market display table imbues a classic industrial style that functions as a unique addition to any outdoor setting. foresidehomeandgarden.com

MAIN EVENT For the layout of this Paradise Valley backyard, Scottsdale landscape designer Jeff Berghoff chose to conceive a vibrant water feature—which is enveloped by hand-painted talavera tiles that Berghoff aligned in an intricate pattern—as a focal point, while maintaining captivating vistas of Camelback Mountain. “I would describe this aesthetic as Santa Barbara-inspired with a hacienda influence,” says Berghoff. “The lush grounds and striking fountain evoke a casual elegance.” Strengthening the charming essence of the fountain are layers of flowering alyssum and geranium, which infuse this tony garden with color. berghoffdesign.com
Since its 2001 launch, Hive—co-founded by Philippinesbased product visionary Kenneth Cobonpue—has been offering a choice selection of outdoor furnishings and décor from an exclusive register of artists. Of particular note is the Kai lantern, shown, a delicately shaped fixture inspired by the simplicity of a bamboo roll-up screen. Composed of a multilayered shade oriented in an abstract pattern, Kai manifests an alluring glow that is heightened when flanked by additional fixtures. designbyhive.com
Q+A ^ ARCHITECTURAL
INFLUENCE
According to Tempe landscape architect Jim Lucas, a property’s exterior design should be reflective of its architecture. Through the use of complementary materials and a natural application process, Lucas was able to “embrace materials indicative of classic European style while creating inviting spaces for entertaining” for the featured Scottsdale home. Plantings such as sago palms, lady banks rose vine and bicolor iris blend with an intricately orchestrated sandstone tiled patio to conjure the setting’s sophisticated appeal. “While my primary focus was on the formality of the design, I also endeavored to weave in plant material native to Arizona, which was achieved by virtue of a cactus garden,” Lucas adds. creativeenvironments.com

Seasoned landscape architect Margaret Joplin of Tucson’s Design Collaborations applies a creative vision and an open mind when designing exterior spaces.
What is your design mantra? Keep an open mind, listen and trust the process, and the answers will come. Describe your preferred landscape style. I’m most drawn to landscape architecture that fits the user, the environment and the context while allowing me to think creatively. Where does your inspiration stem from when it comes to landscape architecture? A major muse for me is the work of Ganna Walska, who designed the Lotusland botanic garden in Santa Barbara. Her adoration for plants and vision for creating beautifully detailed, thematic gardens is hugely influential. Are you working with any new materials lately? Recently, I’ve been incorporating kiln-casting glass into my designs for outdoor LED lighting pieces.

MINIMALIST ^ APPROACH
^
Upon revamping this pueblo-style compound’s exterior layout, architect Eric Spry was charged with several tasks: to create a raised pool, a guest house and a series of outdoor living spaces. “While my overarching goal was to marry the architecture and landscape, I wanted to do so with a minimalist approach,” notes Spry, who “tried to touch the canvas as little as possible, just enough to enclose the space.” Integrating drought-tolerant elements—such as a variety of cacti and mesquite canopy trees—that thrive in this Paradise Valley environment, Spry achieved a layout that is understated yet rich in natural allure. spryarch.com
When Arizona summers give rise to heightened, almost intolerable, temperatures, the plant enthusiasts at Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden find a way to combat the heat. Through the end of August, the 145-acre property is host to evening flashlight tours, where visitors can indulge the senses and experience everything this spectacular destination has to offer—including night-blooming flowers and natural wildlife—when the sun goes down. dbg.org

garden luxury This season, Michael Taylor Designs introduces Arcadia, a posh array of outdoor furnishings envisioned by designers Andrew Fisher and Jeffry Weisman. Garnering inspiration from nature, Fisher and Weisman outfitted the featured lounge chair with organically shaped legs accented by hollyhock leaves. “The collection speaks to the garden setting it was designed to enhance,” notes Fisher, who adds that the generous scale and sumptuous cushioning were necessary in order to ensure an elevated level of comfort. michaeltaylordesigns.com

ART
VERTICAL THINKING Debbie Kotalic visits Worth Avenue often. But, she’s not in Palm Beach to admire the fashion-centric vitrines. There’s a much more visually stimulating display that inspires passersby to stop, shoot a pic on their iPhone, and ponder the site of an 840-square-foot vertical garden. “It’s a very tight abstract that both counters and complements the avenue’s sprawling bougainvillea and breezy palm trees,” Kotalic says. “Everyone sees something different. It’s similar to when people look at the same cloud. What they envision isn’t necessarily the same.” A landscape designer for green wall specialists GSky Plant Systems, Kotalic is intimately familiar with every aspect of this wall. After all, she devised it, and even included a hidden optical illusion within its leafy façade. “I’ll give you a hint...it’s very Palm Beach,” teases Kotalic, who collaborated with the Garden Club of Palm Beach and landscape architecture firm Sanchez & Maddux. Behind its allure lies an intricate network of irrigation and maintenance systems that ensures the installation retains its wonder. As for the Rorschach-inspired camouflage, further gaze reveals (at least to us) a wind-bent palm tree, swaying fronds and all.

MAGNATE O F TA S T E THE VISIONARY PRESIDENT OF RALPH PUCCI INTERNATIONAL DISCUSSES THE INSPIRATIONAL POWER OF ART, THE BEAUTY FOUND IN IMPERFECTIONS AND THE NEXT BIG THING. WHEN I JOINED THE family mannequin business in 1976, all the other companies were doing very ladylike and elegant mannequins. So we sprayed ours out in high-gloss colors. We went where someone else wasn’t, and that became the design philosophy of Pucci from there on out. I LOOK FOR PIECES
that are unique, simple, timeless and, most importantly, that have soul. I don’t look for furniture that’s been mass-produced; I look for special pieces that have been touched by a great artisan and a creative mind. FINISHES ARE REALLY

For our Hervé Van der Straeten show in New York, we chose Billie Holiday and Count Basie. For Ruben Toledo in Los Angeles, we had a little fun and played early Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Music is the exclamation point to the mood we’re trying to create. I’VE BEEN WORKING with Vicente

Fashion and interiors turn toward Beijing as this capital city dazzles with striking design. Shifting gears from traditional expectations—beloved chinoiserie, blue-andwhite porcelain and graceful lattice detailing—Beijing is setting a new tone where sleek lines reign supreme and regal undertones hark back to the Ming Dynasty. With thought-provoking architecture and Chinese culture as a muse, reimagined forms take shape, never compromising function for beauty, rather combining them seamlessly. Illustrating this notion is the Grace Beijing, a contemporary hotel in the much soughtafter 798 Art District, surrounded by world-class contemporary art galleries.

UNFORESEEN ELEMENT COMPANY Therien & Co. | RETAIL $4,035 | INFO therien.com
“I adore this chair. The curvaceous shape and simple upholstery is a winning combination. The twig-like, gilt-iron legs infuse it with an extra dose of panache. This is the kind of piece that would work just about anywhere, especially as an accent.” BRADLEY AGATHER | DALLAS, TX | THERIEN.COM
+ Upon designing the latest set of additions to Therien & Co.’s Studio Workshops collection—which includes this elegant yet slightly unexpected chair—Robert Garcia intended to evoke a relaxed contemporary vibe that challenges the wonted appearance of upholstery. When paired with the rich textural element of gilt-iron legs, the undulating lines of the seat, back and arms conjure a distinct visual lightness. PORTRAIT: MOLLY MILLER.

+ The bold brushstrokes of modern art paired with an imaginative interpretation of exotic fruit and vivid blooms influenced Italian fabric atelier Dedar to introduce this striking new motif, which is appropriately named About Flowers. Its dramatic detailing and rich composition of hues presents a standout pattern that offers an abundant range of use, from upholstery and accent pillows to drapery.
“Dedar completely understands the synthesis of old and new, the relationship between fashion and interiors, and the rendering of classic tradition into modern luxury. I love how they shattered the anti-floral taboo by creating this exuberant fabric.” STACEY BEWKES | DARIEN, CT | QUINTESSENCEBLOG.COM

“One of my favorite design quotes is from lighting designer Gabriel Hendifar: ‘Good lighting is a room’s jewelry.’ This chandelier embodies that fully. The intricacy of the gold lace-like pattern intermixed with high-gloss polygons adds an exotic yet modern sparkle.”

Inspired by the ancient Portuguese design technique of filigree—an intricate method for creating jewelry and accessories dating back to 3,000 BC—Koket’s mesmerizing fixture coils and bends in a sparkling cluster of spirals. Conceived from laser-cut brass and inky slices of glass, the metallic pattern and angular shapes merge to dazzle as a guaranteed focal point in any area of the home.

AUNDREA PAGNI WHAT’S INSPIRING YOU NOW?
Blue! It’s such a timeless color when it comes to dishes and I’m excited to see it resurge in more modern, graphic patterns. The Bleus d’Ailleurs collection from Hermès is a great example of that. TREASURED ITEM:
A platter passed on to me from my great-great-grandmother. I love using it for family gatherings; it’s such a special piece, and brings back different memories for everyone at the table. GREATEST INDULGENCE:
The Joya Spa at Scottsdale’s Montelucia Resort for a massage and a pedicure. GO-TO HOST GIFT:
Flowers, but always arranged in a vase so the host doesn’t have to bother. I adore tulips—they are simple, contemporary and traditional all at the same time. FAVORITE CITIES:
Of course, New York, Paris and Chicago, but my absolute favorite place is Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I have a lot of family there and I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the quaint lake town. LUXE INTERIORS

design of beautifully sculpted homes to the intricate metalwork, saddlery and weaving techniques that go into the creation of Hayes’ furniture pieces, the firm finds its ethos rooted in the bygone traditions of artisans, master builders and craftsmen of long ago. “I build furniture in pursuit of a return to the handcrafted days of the past,” Hayes says, “where pieces can be stripped down to their most simplified forms.” Indeed his work is a juxtaposition of these basic elements—raw, cold-rolled steel paired with soft tactile leather and natural materials—that determine the essential character of each piece, which only get better looking with age. “The weathering and patinas add a distinctive charm and leave a trace of those who have used it before,” Hayes says, “and, hopefully, through use, the marking of time will have taken place.” dustdb.com; 520.270.4205

I was in architecture school. One of my professors gave us an end-of-the-year exploration project: to design a lamp for $25 or less. The first piece I made was out of cholla cactus, an old tractor brake drum and a lightbulb. After that, I was hooked. I LOVE WHAT I DO BECAUSE…
There is an intangible and poetic part of architecture and design that I am turned on by. DESCRIBE YOUR HOME.
It’s a 1916 brick bungalow in the historic Iron Horse neighborhood, built for the railroad. I have been remodeling it bit by bit, cleaning it up a little but not altering it too much. DESIGN ICONS:
Artists Eduardo Chillida, Robert Irwin and Donald Judd, designer Poul Kjærholm and architect Rudolph Schindler. They are all masters who have had such a great influence on art and architecture. CURRENT PROJECTS:

inspired by the thrill of the hunt, the mother-daughter proprietors, who have voyaged from England to Italy, and everywhere in between, look to skillfully mingle such items as 19th-century temple jars and Aubusson tapestries into today’s modern settings. “The right antique can be like a piece of art,” Brubaker says. “The beauty of it is being able to incorporate them into the way we live today.” Fashioning a relaxed environment where customers can linger to find the pieces they truly love, the pair juxtapose romanticism with realism, coupling ornate centuries-old pieces alongside straight lines, clean palettes and a livable mentality. “A home has to be a reflection of the people who live there,” explains Colangelo, “so we try and guide them to achieve that goal. If you are looking for pieces that you love, not need, you will always find the perfect place for them.” trouvehome.com; 602.778.9777

oteworthy hotels and resorts typically bust through design convention, yielding interior and architectural declarations that push the boundaries beyond residential projects. Both
creatively looser and more experimental in nature, these hotel designs’ bold assertions are definitely something to write home about, especially when an A-list decorator is at the helm. At the Viceroy Anguilla, Los Angeles designer Kelly Wearstler employed unexpected contrasts of natural, neutral-hued elegance where rugged driftwood intermingles with finely honed stone; and white, black and gold interplay with the blue Caribbean waters. The resort’s Sunset Lounge, overlooking the bay, is brimming with a myriad of design nuggets. A mesmerizing Italian marble backsplash primed for sleek open shelving stands tall and bold behind a Carrara-topped island with warm wood chevron detailing. “Be fearless,” advises Wearstler. “Incorporate a bold use of texture in your home, in your kitchen, and mix different metals and materials.” As a stylish departure to the natural backdrop, sumptuous gold (a staple of the designer’s) and shagreen-upholstered barstools offer a fashionable perch to survey the culinary action. “The raw material has so much spirit and natural beauty,” notes Wearstler. “It’s Mother Nature in her finest form. It’s architectural art.”

painted glass. “When I design a hotel, I look to create a mood specific to that property,” says Rottet. “I felt in this particular location that keeping with the 1940s and ’50s inspiration was appropriate.” Naples, Florida-based designer Jett Thompson also approached the Scarp Ridge Lodge’s décor, particularly that the kitchen, with an aesthetic in line with the boutique hotel’s Crested Butte, Colorado, locale. A take on the all-white kitchen, Thompson warmed up the potentially stark palette by working with blonde woods and almond-hued cabinetry and accents.

from a holiday to exotic Bali. With enticing beaches, sprawling cliffs, emerald rice fields, and active volcanic peaks, this ecological wonder may possess alluring topography, but it’s the
spirited approach to design that’s captured our attention. Encouraged by the lush equatorial gardens on the grounds of luxury resort Karma Jimbaran, Grounds Kent Architects embraced the untamed environment when creating this serene soaking retreat. Cast out of a unique blend of terrazzo, marble and
sandstone, the organically shaped bath echoes the design sensibility consistent throughout the property. “The villas are built to follow the design of a traditional courtyard found in a Bali village,” explains Martin Grounds, lead architect on the project. A wide stone path dotted with river rocks connects to the freestanding, open-air tub, overhung with palms and frangipanis, while the imposing stonewall anchors the retreat giving way to the natural plant inhabitants. The awardwinning Australian firm found inspiration amidst the lush tropical landscape and peacefully nestled this stunning display of classic Balinese architecture. “There is something truly luxurious about an outdoor bath in the sweet Bali air.”

Owner Izak Senbahar, who worked closely with Grange, wanted the hotel to exhibit “French luxury with Swiss precision.” Saturated with artistic expression, the übersophisticated vanity fitted with sleek Lefroy Brooks nickel finishes is a modern complement to the classically striped Belgian black and Thassos white marble floors. And that pastel mint complexion? It was added to “bring a translucent element into the mix,” says Senbahar. “It was necessary to include this eye-catching color detail to draw you in even further.”

s a custom home builder, Brett Brimley has constructed dozens of houses in just about every architectural style imaginable. So when his friends and clients—a couple looking to upgrade from their smaller ranch-style
residence—would discuss the dream home they hoped to build for their growing family, he listened with bemusement. “They always said it wouldn’t be like anything I’ve ever seen here,” he recalls. “But I could only imagine what they had in mind.” Brimley finally got an answer when the couple showed him plans done by Chicago architect Paul Konstant. “They saw a classic Shingle-style home I did in a magazine, and tracked me down to do something similar for them,” Konstant says. Yet the late 19th-century New England vernacular, usually clad in wood and slate, “really didn’t lend itself to Arizona’s tough dry climate,” notes the architect. The style’s open, freeflowing proportions, however, were a likely choice given the family’s desire for expansive recreational spaces like a ballet studio, ice cream parlor, game room and more. Complicating matters further, the almost 1-acre Arcadia site they chose was flooded with direct sunlight, so the pool and play areas needed heavy-duty shading,” explains the architect.

Carefully chosen materials, shrewd design innovations and sustainable building features made the project achievable, starting with cement and clay shakes that replace their cedar cousins on the home’s exterior—an option that offered a similar aesthetic without the downfalls of expanding

and contracting in the harsh Arizona sun. Wings off the main house, used for bedrooms, guest quarters and two garages, mask the size of the structure, which has two extra-deep basement levels. One reaches 26 feet below grade to accommodate a basketball court, while the other is at 12 feet below grade to anchor a series of recreational areas that open onto a free-form outdoor pool designed to mimic a desert oasis. It was these architectural elements that “were the most challenging part of the job,” Brimley says, pointing to the depth they had to dig—a rarity in Arizona. “But there isn’t a single inch of the structure that doesn’t have fastidious millwork with exacting transitions.” LUXE INTERIORS

The home’s inventive design tactics didn’t stop there. Inside, Konstant forged right-sized spaces that play to the family’s lifestyle yet “give it the character and ambience you would find in a historic home,” notes designer Caroline Tyler DeCesare, who the wife also hired for her fine East Coast aesthetic. In lieu of a formal living room, Konstant crafted a series of open spaces that includes several family rooms demarcated by elegant architectural details ranging from coffered ceilings to strategically sited columns and coves. Wood plank paneling found throughout is a refined take on rustic shiplap and creates a polished elegance. Furnishing such as a large space was equally challenging, especially given the fact that “we had to find things that played to the style yet were comfortable and durable enough to survive five kids, one a baby they had while they were building the home,” notes DeCesare, who adroitly mixed pieces from a wide range of sources to achieve these goals.

For instance, chic armchairs from Lee Industries in the game room were covered in sturdy Sunbrella fabric, “especially because we knew the kids would drag them out by the pool,” says the designer. But the most daunting part of the process was “the sheer scope of the undertaking,”

Strategy and thoughtful planning were key because, for a house this size, you can go through a couple hundred fixtures.” Today, Brimley calls the project his “labor of love.” But the biggest measure of its success is the fact that “the kids never have to leave,” he says, “and all of their friends come over to play—including mine.” L

ittle more than a half-hour’s drive from Phoenix, a former ranch property has become a modern oasis for homeowners looking to escape the creeping suburban sprawl. The residence is not only a pristine study in glass, concrete and
wood, but its occupants also enjoy an uncommonly vivid window seat to the vibrant natural world outside. Indeed, with a colorful ocotilloand cholla-filled hillside above the house (the land drops more than 70 feet in elevation), and majestic cottonwoods and Cave Creek zigzagging below, the house takes full advantage of its idyllic desert views. The 5-acre site, however, came with an added design challenge: During occasional heavy rains, the hillside would be overwhelmed with a veritable river of runoff headed down to the creek. But in exchange, the homeowners could revel in a bona fide theater of nature. “When the creek isn’t flowing heavily, it’s a little microenvironment,” explains architect Sarah Swartz Wessel, who worked on the project along with her architect-builder husband and business partner, Ethan Wessel. “There’s a nice breeze going through, and it’s a freeway for wildlife like coyotes, bobcats and even javelina.”

Sarah and Ethan approached the project holistically, acting as architects, general contractors and landscape designers, as well as assisting the homeowners with the interiors. Seeking to frame the natural light and landscape with a light touch, their design nestles the house’s west side against the hillside with a series of skylight-like slots puncturing the façade. The middle of the house acts as a bridge, raised above the land to allow rainwater to pass underneath the living room. “We wanted the living spaces to engage the creek as intimately as possible,” Sarah says. “The clients mentioned that they’ve heard what sounded like a train once during a monsoon, but it was actually a wall of water coming down through the creek.”

Inside, the interiors echo the surrounding landscape. In the living room, earthy limestone floors, as well as concrete walls and a fireplace, pick up the tones of the rocks just outside, contrasted by classic midcentury modern furnishings: sumptuous leather Barcelona chairs and daybed, and an Eero Saarinen table. The adjacent kitchen’s walnut cabinetry adds a touch of warmth. Walnut was used again for flooring in the family room and master bedroom. “We tried to restrict the number of different materials used,” Sarah explains. “There’s something harmonious about the same species being used repeatedly.” Yet while the architecture boasts simple but immaculate detailing, it’s also comfortable and unpretentious, utilizing humble materials like the wood and concrete block.

houses, but one would never know it thanks to undulating planes of glass and concrete. “It’s a simple form in some respects, but it’s the incisions and detailing that I think end up creating those special moments experienced by the client,” Ethan says. And the Wessels still get a sense of those experiences. “The homeowners will send us photographs when the creek is running or the trees are blowing,” Ethan says. “The fact that they can frame these experiences with the house, it seems like it magnifies the reasons they bought the property. It’s about the experience of the home, the light and that special site.” L

hen architect Kevin B. Howard first saw the plot of land that his clients, Dan and Susan Parker, wanted to build their new home on, he understood the appeal right away.
Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the site afforded spectacular views of nearby Tucson and the valley below. Still, the location did pose some challenges. “The property had a big rocky outcropping smack-dab in the middle of it, and it looked impossible to build on,” Howard says. “But the more difficult the site, the more I love it. We weren’t going to fight the obstacles; we were going to work with them.” Inspired by the site-specific design approach of Frank Lloyd Wright, who felt that a house should be of the natural environment, and the modernist styles of European architects Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, Howard, along with project architect Joseph E. Brown, created for the Parkers a bold residence

that follows the landscape’s rocky topography. “The house straddles the ridge and then cantilevers out on each side,” he says. “It also steps down the mountain, so there’s a fun relationship between the house and its location.” Howard brought in builder Gregg Seaholm, who now does consulting work, to bring his plans to life. “Logistically, it was tough,” Seaholm says. “There were very tight confines, and the height on everything was super-critical, especially going up three stories and back over the earth. I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and that was the most complicated house I’ve ever built. But I loved driving up to it every day knowing that it was going to turn out amazing.”

Landscape designer Tray Gers installed desert plants and decorative rocks near the entrance, along the driveway and in other spots around the home. “The whole premise was to make it look like the house sprouted out of the desert,” he says. Minneapolis-based designer John Lassila, who had fashioned the owners’ homes in Minnesota and New Orleans, also chose to play off the desert palette when outfitting the rooms, incorporating orange, red and green tones evocative of the outside landscape. Using the architecture as inspiration, Lassila set out to create a modern interior that would depart from the expected Southwest motif. Because the home’s lines are so linear, the designer brought in clean-lined furnishings that would honor it, mixed with organic forms here and there, to add a bit of softness. “There are a number of spaces where a spiral or starburst motif appears— the foyer pendant fixture, the cocktail table, an art sculpture,” he says.

rom the moment they moved from Iceland to Arizona to study architecture and interior design at Arizona State University, Kristjan Sigurdsson and Inga Vals have succeeded at marrying both their personal and professional lives.
Along the way, the husband-and-wife design duo discovered that in addition to creating functional, high-end living spaces for their clients, they enjoyed fashioning homes for themselves as well. “Over the years, we’ve built or remodeled five houses for ourselves alone,” says Sigurdsson. “We just really love the process; it’s our work and our hobby.” The couple’s most recent efforts have resulted in the revitalization of a period home in Lincoln Hills, a hillside subdivision of about 50 houses overlooking downtown Phoenix that had been developed in the late 1960s and early ’70s. “It was a rare find, with great bones, sunrise to sunset views and an open layout that we could work

with without having to totally tear it down,” Sigurdsson relates. The caveat? The home hadn’t been remodeled or upgraded since it was originally built—in 1971. Undaunted, the couple dug in. With the help of general contractor Brad Bryant, someone whom Sigurdsson describes as “a great craftsman” and now a personal friend, deconstruction began of pretty much all but the home’s exterior lines and roofline. Flooring, fixtures, cabinetry and some interior walls were removed; window and door openings were expanded and replaced; siding was re-stuccoed and the roof re-clad with custom panels; and the pool and patio areas were redone and finished with porcelain tile. “The goal was to remodel

the house, staying true to its original midcentury-modern style, but make it current, warm and inviting, and very livable, with all of the amenities of today,” Sigurdsson says. With the main living spaces oriented toward the side of the house with the striking views, Vals created a white-on-white color scheme to accentuate the home’s clean lines. The neutral palette also serves as a backdrop for the couple’s vast collection of modern art and the designer’s knack for adding interest with accents of color and texture. Surfaces change in the kitchen, where porcelain tile floors set the base for a white Poliform cabinet system. Cabinetry is topped with Caesarstone quartz and includes custom panels that disguise the Sub-Zero refrigerator. “It has a really clean flow,” notes Vals. Doors opening to the adjacent patio and pool area extend that sense of rhythm. “It feels like we’re cooking and dining outside,” she adds. “And the outdoor space makes for a great place to entertain.” 254 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

The adjoining bathroom is sleek yet soothing, with a separate vanity space for Vals and a walk-in closet for Sigurdsson. “Sometimes when you remodel a house you have to compromise a little,” says Vals. “My husband’s closet is in the bath so it had to be a little smaller.” Remarkably, the entire project came together in just four months, versus two years for their last house. “It was a full-time job and quite a process,” says Sigurdsson. “But we were organized and had the bonus of being able to run everything by one another. If we disagreed about something, we’d just talk it out and move forward. Sometimes, for this reason, when you’re your own client, you’re your best client.” L

the Imperial yellow from the Ancient Chinese court, which is frequently paired with other spicy colors and is used in generous quantities with black.”

GREEN ROOM
PROVING THAT A GORGEOUS GREEN WORKS WITH ANY AESTHETIC, THIS DESIGN DUO SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SHADES FROM AVOCADO TO OLIVE.
COLOR TRAITS When Katie Schroder and Erika Rundiks of Atelier Interior Design were challenged with infusing color and glamour into a traditional home, they accepted with gusto. The homeowner attributed her love of color to a childhood spent in India and was looking for a way to liven up her study. To do so, Schroder and Rundiks used a fabric shade and lacquered kelly green shelving unit to pop against neutral furnishings and graphic wallpaper. “That particular green works

well with any style,” explain the designers. “The regalness of the color accentuates traditional design elements, but it can also serve as the added zip in a modern space.”
