Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting. “The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic. Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”

EDITOR’S LETTER
ARTS & DECORATION
W
hile recently browsing an antique shop in Flat Rock, North Carolina, I picked up an issue of Arts & Decoration magazine, circa March 1927. Charmed by its vintage photographs and retro appeal, I took it home to study its content. What insightful words of design wisdom I discovered in its pages. A few to take note of, and for us design devotees to keep in mind...
On Gardens: “Gardens, like everything else in the world, should be made with imagination as well as knowledge. There must seem leisure in the loveliness—and permanency. In short, beauty of a garden lies in looking lived in, by dreams at least.” On Room Composition: “It is one thing to be able to make up a pretty color scheme and quite a different matter to bring all the diverse elements of a room together in such fashion as to make a beautiful composition. People live in these compositions; move about in them. Therefore, they must of necessity be as sound in their structural composition as a group of sculpture and as lovely in their color choice and arrangement as is the work of the painter upon canvas.” On Architecture: “As American dwellings are built better, more permanently and more beautifully, they will be regarded less as real estate and more as homes, and with that change in attitude, the status of the home as the nucleus of society will approach more closely the older American tradition.”

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
fall. The fall season is always a special time of year, as not only are we celebrating the holidays—and crisp days providing the perfect weather for entertaining outdoors— but we are also gearing up for a busy stretch of happenings.
Luxe was on hand to enjoy a number of events in the last few months, starting with Woodcrest Fine Cabinetry’s grand opening of its new showroom in Old Town Scottsdale. Next, we celebrated with The Modern Group at a festive party in its recently expanded Scottsdale space, where guests got to preview the company’s newly launched product lines from such brands as Jeld-Wen Windows & Doors. We also welcomed designers Wendy Black Rodgers and Chuck Skaugstad Jr.’s brand-new showroom, PavoReal Interiors, located at Market Street in DC Ranch.
Lastly, we would like to congratulate the hard work of all of the winners from ASID Arizona North Chapter’s 37th Annual Design Excellence Awards Gala held in August at the Montelucia Resort & Spa. We greatly appreciate and admire their many contributions to the world of design.

Originally founded on the premise of offering custom lighting design, Wiseman and Gale has clearly evolved since the interior design firm and showroom was first introduced to downtown Scottsdale almost 50 years ago. Providing enduring inspiration to the Arizona design market, the company now focuses its efforts on offering a brilliant assemblage of rugs, art pieces, accessories and antiques that reflect its storied heritage. “Over the years, we’ve cultivated an incredible set of items,” says managing partner Scott Burdick. While many of these wares are incorporated into the firm’s exclusive design projects, Burdick notes that they continue to grow as a resource for local designers. wisemanandgale.com
Created from a series of interconnected geometric shapes with metallic-finished cores, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler’s Welles light fixture is a welcome addition to the brothers’ exclusive line of furnishings. Since launching their namesake collection, Gabriel Scott, last year, the architects-turned-designers’ chic set has rapidly expanded—with plans to introduce a similar piece in the form of a sconce—and there are no signs of slowing down. “Our intention was to offer a flexible lighting system that gives decorators a maximum amount of possibilities,” notes Richler. gabriel-scott.com

DEFINING MOMENT Westhill Furnishings—Arizona’s exclusive dealer of Tui Lifestyle—is the prime locale for uncovering a posh selection of furniture distinguished by neutral tones and modern silhouettes, evoking the Miami-based brand’s overarching personality. Since Chief Executive Officer Jason Atkins launched Tui Lifestyle in 2008, the company, which has several locations across the U.S., has evolved its metropolitan aesthetic to one that he says is “more simple, clean and timeless.” The featured Verner coffee table from the recently released Haus collection—which Atkins says was inspired by the simplicity of European design and the architectural conventions of Frank Lloyd Wright—is just one of the stunning pieces available this fall. westhillaz.com; tuilifestyle.com

Helmed by co-owners Kim Barnum and Teresa Nelson, Nelson Barnum Interiors is a haven for exclusive designs, arresting artwork and distinctive antiques. Born from the creative vision of the Scottsdale design enthusiasts, the tony studio is replete with a unique array of furnishings that evoke an English éclat. “One of my current favorites is a sumptuous slipper chair,” says Barnum, who noted that it would add an ideal dose of glamour to a powder room. Available in a wide variety of fabrics and scales, each piece can be tailored to one’s specific desire. nelsonbarnum.com
According to Ryan O’Meara, many years spent extensively traveling the globe— primarily during his former career as a professional figure skater—and connecting with other cultures ignited his attraction to the design industry, leading him to open Palavela Home seven years ago. Housed in a charming Spanish Colonial structure in Old Town Scottsdale, the showroom is stocked with a captivating selection of alluring décor, including a premier assemblage of artisan-crafted wallcoverings from brands the likes of Wallteriors and Arena Design. Also providing a wide range of lighting, case goods and seating, the showroom is host to several inspiring vignettes, which showcase the offerings in sophisticated settings. palavelahome.com

Q+A
Luxe sits down with Kim Barnum, interior designer and co-owner of Nelson Barnum Interiors, to discuss life’s inspiration.
What inspired you to begin a career in design? I have always found creative inspiration in peaceful atmospheres and beautiful spaces. Traveling—whether I go on a quick day trip or an overseas journey—also helps to provide clarity. What influences you on a daily basis? The relationships I’ve forged with my clients definitely shape the fashion in which I approach my work; many have become great friends! Are there specific colors, patterns or textures that resonate most with you? For me, it’s about the history behind a piece, whether it’s a collectible item, a family heirloom or a treasured antique; a touch of leopard never hurt anyone, though. Who are some of your design icons? I adore Rose Tarlow for her love of all things classic and elegant, and Bunny Williams for her artful penchant for creating beautiful spaces.

The raw quality and natural allure of Machu Picchu inspired designer Jiun Ho to create his latest furniture collection entitled Jiun Ho IV, a collaborative effort with Peruvian-born textile designer Sandra Jordan. Part of the new line is the Chinchero bench, shown, enveloped in Jordan’s olive-hued Prima Alpaca fabric—a luxurious fiber that was historically implemented by Incan royalty and evokes the ancient heritage of the Andean culture. According to Ho, the bench, which is bestowed with a framework of robust steel, “reflects the magical essence of the royal estate built with eternity in mind.” jiunhodejia.com 098 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

Curating a captivating collection of furnishings, accents and artwork in styles ranging from vintage to modern comes second nature to Susan Cunningham and Kimber Hicken of Chandler’s Simply Klassic Interiors. An established design duo since 2007, the pair honed their aesthete by orchestrating a bevy of commercial and residential projects before launching the store just two years ago. This season, Cunningham and Hicken say they are most excited about showcasing a selection of refinished case goods and a vibrant new line of upholstery. simplyklassicinteriors.blogspot.com

TABLE TALK Entertaining is the perfect occasion to tell a visual story, and with the table as protagonist, every piece that graces it also plays a supporting role. ENTERTAINING
“I find that many of my clients are attracted to the idea of using color but are fearful in applying it,” Boyd says. “Tabletop is a great way to have fun and experiment with interesting combinations.” The designer chose Anna Weatherley’s goldrimmed charger for its amethyst color and her scalloped white dinner plate for its bright note; the hand-painted Jaune de Chrome dessert dish serves as a complement to both, and the leopard-print Norbar fabric neutralizes the color scheme. Boyd layered Rogaska crystal throughout the smoky purple dining room and added delicate Hermès flatware as jewelry for the table—a play on the literal reference she made with an agate bracelet as a napkin ring. Alongside the fireplace, they make an inviting space even cozier in time for a fabulous fall get together. Placemats, Bagatelle in Violine; manuelcanovas.com. FERNAND LÉGER’S ENDURING ART PIECE DEPICTING ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN LIFE INSPIRES AN EXHIBITION ON THE MODERN METROPOLIS.
S
o many modern artists expressed their world through their experience of the street and the changes they were observing in the urban fabric. The modern metropolis was the central symbolic site of modernity. Léger: Modern Art and The Metropolis—the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition on the metropolis and the exchanges of influence between Fernand Léger and the artists, architects, filmmakers and poets
of the 1920s international avant-garde in Paris—makes its debut this fall. Running from October through January, the exhibition was inspired by The City (shown here), a formative work in 20th-century art, and one of the core masterpieces in the museum’s collection. “We wanted to focus on the metropolis to show how current modern art’s engagement with the world can be for today’s city dwellers,” notes exhibit curator Anna Vallye. “What’s so remarkable is that the city Léger painted almost 100 years ago is still completely familiar to us today. Of course, cities have changed since then, but there is also something profoundly enduring about Léger’s vision.” philamuseum.org

FIVE MINUTES WITH...
BON VIVANT
WITH A NEW BOOK CHRONICLING THE RESTORATION OF HIS FRENCH CHÂTEAU AND AN UPCOMING TABLEWARE LINE FOR ROYAL LIMOGES, L.A. DESIGNER TIM CORRIGAN STILL FINDS TIME FOR A LITTLE JOIE DE VIVRE.
IN YOUR NEW BOOK, AN INVITATION TO CHÂTEAU DU GRAND-LUCÉ... Many people think
that classic design is outdated and uncomfortable and I wanted to show that nothing could be further from the truth. Design is a pendulum and while it swings from trend to trend, it always returns to the classical because there is an innate sense of security in it. It is more forgiving, as it accepts that daily accoutrements are a part of our living spaces.
YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN:
WHEN ENTERTAINING GUESTS…
None of what I do is too studied. I think a flea market treasure can be mixed in with an 18th-century console and you get to appreciate each of them more because of their relationship to one another. Who wants to live in a room that whispers, “Look, but don’t touch?”
It is important to make them feel as if they are in their own home. I always leave flowers, freshly baked goodies, magazines or books I think they will enjoy and a scented candle in their room to welcome them.
ARCHITECTURAL WHY UNDERTAKE SUCH A PAINSTAKING RESTORATION?
I love the secrets that you find in the stones of old buildings and the challenge of taking something that was designed for a different way of life and subtly transforming it for the way we live today. FURNISHING THE CHATEAU…
Was a real labor of love and I used an approach that I would advise anyone to: Buy what you love and it will somehow find its proper place. Clockwise from top: Corrigan’s French estate; Macassar Ebony & Ostrich Egg lamp by TC Home; a seating area of the master bedroom featured in An Invitation to Château du Grand-Lucé; an antique brass fire screen; the designer in his Loire Valley home.
MOST FAVORED
CALIFORNIA VS. FRANCE: For
me, Southern California is all about comfort, casual living and self- expression, but there is just something about the French respect for culture, history and tradition that really resonates with me.
PERIOD: Mid-tolate 18th-century France was such a remarkable time for architecture, because it held the highest level of refinement of the French aesthetic, but it was tempered by the age of enlightenment. PAINT A PICTURE CTURE OF TIME SPENT AT YOUR PICTURESQUE CTURESQUE CHÂTEAU: It’s like going back
in time to when life was all much slower and people really had the time to be with each other. I can think of no other place in the world I would rather be when I am afforded the luxury of time.

When designer Cédric Ragot conceives an interior accent, such as this ombré rug he created for French atelier Roche Bobois, he perpetually aims to conjure a link between the functional and the conceptual. “Ponyo was actually one of my first forays into the art of rug design,” says Ragot, adding that he “endeavored to invite a harmonious blend of tones, which in turn, serve to warm up a room.” Featured here in a raspberry-centric scheme, the artfully devised floorcovering is handwoven from sumptuous New Zealand wool.

This season, Kyle Bunting’s effervescent hide-on-hair pattern work collides with South Florida design studio Britto Charette’s penchant for Art Deco architecture. The result is this hourglass stool, which marks the duo’s first venture into the home accessories arena. “I like this piece as a single side table, but it works best when used in multiples,” says Bunting. “The juxtaposition of the warm and tactile hide against the opaque base’s smooth silhouette is nearly the perfect combination of materials and surfaces.”
“This stool’s concentric circles remind us of an age-old tree trunk. Overall, we adore the clean look, especially after a recent trip to Japan where home décor is pared down and streamlined.”

+ To create the Sorenthia light fixture, Rhode Island-based designer Asher Dunn turned to the marvels of the ocean to find his muse. “I was intrigued by the crystalline nature of sea kelp when seen below the surface of water,” says Dunn, who took a cue from the arresting quality of light shining through the plant. Merging this organic component—by virtue of adjustable arms—with an industrial blend of steel and brass, Dunn introduces a luminous product destined to shine.

In the early 1950s, celebrated Italian architect and furniture visionary Gio Ponti experimented with several models of this exquisite case good. Designated with the simple moniker Chest of Drawers, the time-honored design far exceeds its humble name. Bestowed with a robust elmwood body and an ivory-finished front, the midcenturystyle piece is accented with handles in elm, Italian walnut, mahogany and rosewood, all resting on lustrous brass feet.
What may appear to be a straightforward yet luxuriously appointed chair swathed in a graphite-hued velvet is anything but basic. This plush beauty, a piece from the newly launched Luxury in Motion collection by Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman, is also a fully functioning recliner, silently extending at the push of a concealed upholstered button. “The graceful contours of this chair’s frame lend a sartorial element,” says creative director Phillip Jeffries. The jewelry-like Greek key motif at its base is the finishing touch to this well-tailored piece.
“While linear in form, this chair sits in motion. Timeless yet bold, I definitely can envision it in the bedroom of my Milan apartment. The Greek key detailing is an added bonus.”

CITRON PAINT
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? It’s more of a driving creative itch. I’ll start seeing a smoky French blue, for example, and get a tingle, then notice it everywhere and start collecting muses. I’ll steep myself in that color, then dive in and start mixing! HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENTS WOULD CHARACTERIZE YOU? I listen carefully to honor my clients’ needs; but I also push them to go beyond what they’ve imagined. It can be empowering for them to be heard and shown how beautiful their home can be when they really express themselves. WHICH PROJECTS HAVE BROUGHT YOU THE MOST SATISFACTION? When clients are so completely thrilled with their home that they are smitten and fall in love with their homes all over again—or even for the first time.
Color has the power to inspire, to elevate the spirit, to define a space, to define who you are and how you feel. No one knows this better than C J Vohs, founder of Citron Paint. “How my clients want their home to feel—sexy, comfy, rich, quiet, serene, fun, saucy, edgy, modern, luxurious—is the only thing that matters,” she says. “I use my experience from doing hundreds of successful color consultations to help make their vision a stylish reality that reflects who they are and will be beautiful for years to come.” Blending multiple pigments (at least eight) and never using black, Vohs creates vividly original colors that are luminous, authentic and inspired by nature. “Clients often call and say, ‘Can you tell me again why the paint is different?’ They share with me how the paint has transformed their home, like when the afternoon light makes the wall’s colors dance—or how the deep, natural green for the window wall makes the room ‘melt into the desert.’” Handmade with the eye of a colorist and the passion of an artist, Vohs’ rich palette ranges from delicate (cashmere sweater, honey hair) to sensual (late bloomer, vintage velvet) to bold (mr. darcy, chinoiserie) to soothing (beach house, inca dove) and beyond. At Citron Paint, fond memories, life experiences and a love for Mother Nature stand behind every color, and the effect is one of beauty.
“When people are in a home I’ve designed, they want to linger. They start noticing the details, they see new things, they just want to soak it all in.” – C J VOHS, FOUNDER AND COLOR CREATOR, CITRON PAINT
C J Vohs believes in rooms with character. Sometimes, the room’s contents may have had birthdays in different decades. With 8 to 15 pigments in each color, Citron Paint goes well with décor of any age. Here, downpour complements a modern lamp and an 1800s chair.
The husband wanted the space to be masculine, and the wife wanted it to be pretty. C J’s solution was handsome: a mix of warm gray (tarnished silver) and soft, worn pink (jan’s rose). At Citron, all colors like each other; even these two paints have 10 pigments in common.

“I didn’t always think I’d be an artist,” says sculptor Kevin Caron. In fact, his eponymous Phoenix studio stemmed from his own backyard by chance, when, driving an 18-wheeler for a living, he came up with the plan to create an outdoor privacy screen crafted of discarded metal. That screen led to a

KEVIN CARON PICASSO OR VAN GOGH?
Picasso. I lean toward flowing lines and radical creativity. DREAM COLLABORATION:
I’m continually inspired by Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher and his peers. My dream would be for Escher to come back to life and say, “Let’s create something together. I’ll draw it; you build it.” CURRENT PROJECT:
I’m about to finish a monumental sculpture called The Runner. I designed this piece about four years ago and haven’t been able to get it out of my mind. I’m finally creating it for a solo show, “Micro/Macro,” at the Chandler Center for the Arts running through October. FAVORITE PASTIME:
Reading. My preferred genre is science fiction. It stimulates my imagination and strongly influences my work. WORDS OF WISDOM:
See things for what they can be, not for what they are. This paraphrases one of my early mentors, sculptor Gary Johnson. LUXE INTERIORS

We are always looking for new pieces and enjoy changing the shop regularly.” Using a style she refers to as “organic design,” Alber skillfully guides her clients to find a look that’s truly theirs—making her a home décor psychologist, of sorts. “People doubt their own instincts, but I can help them edit and provide a new perspective on the furniture they already own,” she explains. “You can change things up without having to do a complete overhaul.” founddesign.co; 480.733.6863

Modern transitional pieces with vintage flair and more color. People want a cleaner design that’s impactful but not over the top. CURRENT PROJECTS:
Our most recent project was the design of a beach cottage in Coronado, California. Since then, we have been busy working on some celebrity projects for restylesource.com, a national resource we started that directs consumers to local shops and showrooms, and provides design inspiration. INSIDE TIP:
Always aim to maintain a balance. Even in the midst of a crazy schedule, we try to make time to have fun with the kids. GO-TO HOST GIFT:
Find something personal that fits the host, like a batch of French salts for someone who loves to cook. LOCAL HIDEAWAYS:

etting out to renovate the kitchen of their cottage-style home in New Canaan, Connecticut, a couple didn’t have to search too far for their muse. With Dutch and Belgian heritages, respectively, the husband and wife instinctively harked back to the enchanting
aesthetics for which their native lands are revered. “We wanted to make sure that we retained a very cozy, vintage European vibe, like that of an old bakery, for instance,” homeowner and designer Tessa Neleman-Pimontel explains. Another check off their wish list was to keep the space open (notice the pared down cabinetry; the simple ceramic subway tiling by the Bertazonni hood and stove; uninterrupted counter space), organized and flooded with light while retaining a sense of genuineness. “This kitchen adds an instant feeling of authenticity to our home,” she says. “It works out well as an open space time together. Every afternoon, the low-setting sun pours in, which adds to the whole mood we were aiming to capture.”

We were lucky to find the elements needed to achieve the style we had in mind all along of European elegance with an artistic bohemian flair. TESSA NELEMAN-PIMONTEL, ECHO AND MERCER

DISPLAY TYPE Opting for limited upper cabinetry, the Nelemans had to search for alternative answers to de rigueur storage questions. “The idea of the hutch was always in our minds, but it only came to fruition after we found the right pieces,” Tessa notes. “Nearing the final stages of the renovation, we took a trip to Mexico. We knew what we were looking for, but were very surprised when we found it in an old hardware store. We fell in love with the huge hutch and bought it right there and then.” To balance the rustic nature of the towering case, the homeowners kept it simple. “We like white as a base, but there are many touches of Delft and even Guatemalan earthenware in the mix. The key is to make sure that whatever is visible is positioned well (handles all turned the same direction, everything evenly spaced) and to edit, edit, edit. Keep only what you really need and use often.” For additional visual variety, they encircled the antique Swedish farm table with steel bistro chairs from Vagabond Vintage in Atlanta.

sure that my client used every square inch of her home, and that each space met her needs and represented who she was,” Stanley says. The resulting bathroom is a study in simple elegance, and the impact of letting just a few statement pieces have their moment in the spotlight: a sinuous freestanding Waterworks tub entices a leisurely soak; dreamy draperies in a blush tone coyly flirt with a coquettish portrait of Marilyn Monroe; two-tone marble floors are striking yet feel as if they’ve always been there; and finally, the crown jewel of the room, a polyhedron chandelier Stanley sourced from JF Chen in Los Angeles that would get the most pragmatic person’s pulse racing.

CLOTHES QUARTERS What’s a designer to do when a client’s existing closet space simply isn’t sufficient for their wardrobe? Well, you relocate the master bedroom and transform the remaining space into a dressing room fit for a Rodeo Drive boutique, of course. “I like to think of closets as a fun playroom for women, so I try to make them big enough where you can have friends come over, hang out and play dress up,” Stanley says. “This typically calls for a seating area.” The designer brought in a custom chaise that offers her client (and her client’s fortunate guests) a place to sit and ponder the day’s sartorial decisions, while an antique rug from Lawrence of La Brea complements sleek custom cabinetry. “This is one of my favorite designs I’ve done,” Stanley says. “It’s every woman’s dream.”

JOE LUCAS
ENTRÉZ-VOUS INTERIOR DESIGNER JOE LUCAS WORKED HIS DESIGN MAGIC, CREATING A GRAPHIC GALLERY WALL WITH PAPERS ENVISIONED AS WORKS OF ART.
Los Angeles designer and one half of Harbinger LA, Joe Lucas created an entryway to remember using the sleekest fall wallcoverings. A “sucker for a salon-style wall,” Lucas began his dynamic scene with artist Sharon Lee’s debut line as his anchor. “The chic gray-and-saffron combo of Lee’s Chrysanthemum design caught my eye instantly,” he says. Building from there, Lucas approached many of the papers as he would art. “Kelly Wearstler’s provocative new Crescent design is a recent obsession, so it needed to be framed. And the sculptural Weitzner paper lent itself to being floated in an acrylic box, earning the focal point position in the space.” From a Holland & Sherry-clad flowerpot and a Wearstler-wrapped lampshade to an Innovationsupholstered stool, Lucas reveals that wallpaper knows no boundaries.

Naturally lured by wallcoverings that possess an assured straight-lined disposition, interiors devotee Sara Ruffin Costello unexpectedly found herself swept away by the season’s more abstract offerings. “I was drawn to patterns that appear out of focus; especially those peachy, warm tones,” she explains. “They feel less expectant than chevron or stripes (which I love) that continue to pop up each year.” After reveling in a veritable trove of papers, Costello sought to create a sunburst, turning to London-based moldings manufacturer Solomon & Wu for a bit of architectural encouragement. “The plaster moldings were a structured counterbalance to the loose, dreamy quality of the papers, and the dynamic sunburst shape has an artistic character to it, like a patterned color wheel.”

PHILIP GORRIVAN
CASE STUDY GEOMETRICS AND BOLD PRINTS WERE THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THIS SOPHISTICATEDLY CLAD BOOKCASE ORNAMENTED BY INTERIOR DESIGNER PHILIP GORRIVAN.
“There is so much to be excited about when it comes to wallpaper,” exclaims New York-based interior designer Philip Gorrivan, who’s heralded his longstanding love affair with the material throughout his design career. His studious composition began with an unadorned bookcase that, according to the designer, left much to be desired. Presented with the latest lines, Gorrivan cloaked the back of the shelves with a subtle yet striking Farrow & Ball stripe and developed groupings of covered books in stylized vignettes, each layer telling its own story. “Dedar’s new boldly hued geometrics alongside Clarke & Clarke’s punchy floral patterns
“I tend to gravitate toward geometrics or patterns that aren’t so directional. I love products that are fearlessly gutsy. It’s fun to create a little tension in a space by introducing a wallpaper that appears to completely break all the rules.”

hen a couple from Canada were looking to raise the bar for their Paradise Valley retreat, they turned to the trusted team that designed their previous Arizona vacation home just a short
distance away. The result is a massive indoor-outdoor complex that rivals any luxury resort. “This home is designed to a very high level,” says builder James J. Morgan. “Resort-style living had become an important part of the owners’ lifestyle and so the project became an extension of the places they have enjoyed around the world.” Situated within prime viewing range of both Camelback and Mummy mountains, the 1-acre lot truly maximizes the outdoors and surrounding terrain, for which landscape architect Greg Trutza interspersed specimen plantings of cacti, agaves and Bismark palms to enhance the home’s blue limestone terraces, and added a textural palette of hopseed, sugar bush, foothill paloverde, germander and blackfoot daisies for compatibility with the mountainside vegetation that allows for a “sense of place.” Artificial turf was installed between plantings and pavers to reduce water use and add contrast.

The scheme for the interiors took its cues from the environment as well, integrating natural materials with modern fabrications. Despite its large size, the home manages to appear warm and welcoming with the use of stacked stone and ceilings clad in cedar wood, and is balanced by contemporary features such as stainless steel and a striking spiral staircase accessorized with a handblown light fixture. “What I enjoyed most about this client is that they wanted everything new and unique—the latest lighting, appliances and fixtures—so we got to work with a lot of materials that we hadn’t used before,” says architect Mark Fredstrom. Though it has few interior walls, the open floor plan is made intimate in scale thanks to several defined gathering spaces, such as the living room’s quartet of swivel chairs. “It’s quite a big house, so our challenge was to give it the coziness of a smaller dwelling,” says designer Paul Lavoie, who helped carve out niche-like vignettes within more cavernous ones. Based in Calgary, Lavoie has decorated several homes for the couple and says the soft and soothing Arizona palette provided a great foil with accents of magenta and purple creating a contrast against calming tones of wasabi green and cream.

Local interior designer Kerri Foreman was brought on to devise a plan for all of the home’s finishes as well as interior architectural details and decorative lighting. “The client wanted a clean, contemporary look, yet it had to be user-friendly,” says Foreman, explaining how she and the

Working with Foreman was kitchen designer Mary Fisher Knott, who created a professional-grade space featuring ergonomic appliances and workstations worthy of even the most skilled chef. “You alleviate a lot of stress on the body with the right elements like an elevated dishwasher

and raised countertops, says Fisher Knott. Among the other culinary conveniences she installed are a built-in steamer adjacent to the cooktop, a telescoping hood over the range and cabinets with sliding doors and interior and task lighting. Luxurious amenities continue back outside with a 49-foot-long pool with a wading edge and lap lane, a rooftop viewing deck with room for 30, numerous fire pits and an outdoor kitchen replete with a smoker. Creating such an impressive space was definitely a team effort, yet Morgan describes the entire process as very fluid, with all team members playing their roles and making modifications to the plan well into the final stages. early every window in this airy Scottsdale penthouse affords mountain vistas designed to renew the spirit and calm the senses. The homeowners, a semi-retired couple whose primary residence is in Alberta, Canada,
were already living in the building when the spacious top-floor unit became available, and they purchased it right away. “We were drawn to its openness,” the wife says. “It has much more living space than we had in our other place. Plus, we already knew we loved the location.” The homeowners may be on the verge of retirement, but they’ve found that they are busier now than ever before, and for this reason, wanted their new condo’s interiors to be as restorative as its views. Although they appreciated the home’s original design, it wasn’t quite what they had in mind for their ideal getaway and they desired a livelier space that would accurately reflect their lifestyle. “In Canada, we see a lot of gray in the winter,” says the wife, “and sometimes you just crave some color.”

To that end, they turned to interior designer Robert Burg, who set out to create a whimsical interior imbued with splashes of vibrant hues. A bright striped fabric from Clarence House, which Burg used to cover throw pillows in the living room, inspired a palette spiked with pinks, reds and violets. “I used as much color as I could without making it too overpowering,” the designer says. Because their home in Edmonton—which Burg also designed—is very formal, the owners also desired a more relaxed feel for their Scottsdale escape. “I wanted it to be sophisticated, but I also wanted to be able to feel free to just relax,” says the wife. Burg adds, “They entertain constantly, so we used beautiful things, but not so much that you’d want stanchions so people wouldn’t go into the rooms.” With the help of a talented team that included residential designer Linda Eales and builder Don Buol—who both had worked with the designer on previous projects—Burg reconfigured spaces to better suit the homeowners’ needs and sense of style. A prime example of this is in the living room, where a small existing fireplace was removed and a new larger one was installed in a different, more central location.

In the kitchen, the team replaced the home’s original cabinetry, downsizing to make space for a breakfast area, and reutilized a large Viking range since the owners love to cook and entertain. “We redid the island with a big 6-inch butcher-block top,” Buol says. “We also added a custom handmade glass tile backsplash, and made a little bar area off to one side.” The facelift was a big hit with the homeowners. “I love the kitchen,” the wife says. “We just sort of gravitate to that space.” When the couple sold their previous condo, they sold their furnishings along with it, so Burg had to start fresh. By pairing found treasures— such as a mirrored makeup table he bought at an antiques market, which once resided in a Paris apartment—with new custom-designed furnishings, Burg expertly blended old and new and artfully mixed

In response, Burg brought in artwork from Canada; furniture, fabrics, silver and china from France; and furnishings and fixtures from around the United States. Although the couple had a general concept in mind for the condo’s redesign, the wife says they essentially handed the reins over to Burg—and they have no regrets. “My husband loves his office, our bedroom is soothing and relaxing, and I love to be out on the patio, even in the hot desert heat,” she says. “We’re just very happy with how everything turned out.” L LUXE INTERIORS

ith views of the city lights twinkling from one direction and golf courses, mountains and the natural desert lying in wait from others, an East Coast couple found their
personal oasis in the picturesque Sonoran Desert. The Scottsdale location offered the perfect backdrop for a second home that was to reflect a love of both the desert and the old-world stylings of Tuscany—a home that will eventually serve as a permanent residence for the former attorneys, as well as a welcoming getaway for their now-teenage triplets, family and friends. The project, however, was not without its challenges. “The site was basically just a knoll,” says architect Lee Hutchison, who worked on the project along with associate architect Jessica Hutchison-Rough. “So we had to be creative in how we developed it.” By grading the property and reorienting the lot, Hutchison was able to produce the views the homeowners so deeply desired.

The owners were drawn to Hutchison in part because of the architect’s mastery of ceilings with notable impact. “Floor plans are how the house functions,” Hutchison says, “but the ceiling can dictate how the house feels. The height, the textures: They can make the space warm, cozy and intimate or wide open to the outside.” The ceiling in the great room, for example, features a radial beam pattern that draws one’s eyes to the stunning views, whereas in a hallway that connects to the detached master suite, tiled barrel vaults run perpendicular for visual separation. Douglas fir is the predominant choice of wood throughout, with differing details and finishes to define each room. An artisanal appearance is also prevalent in the home’s stonework, a mix of limestone, travertine and granite, which flows from the front courtyard, through the entryway and back outside. builder Randy Arnett-Romero employed the techniques of ancient stonemasons, mixing mortar with grittier sand for an older impression and washing the final product for a look that appears to have stood the test of time. “The idea was to get a newly built home to appear as though

it had aged over time,” says Arnett-Romero. “The owners had witnessed this warmth in their travels and really wanted to recreate it.” A natural wash running through the property brought about one of the home’s more interesting features: the isolated master suite accessed via an interior “bridge” that crosses the arroyo and provides a retreat for the homeowners. The exterior of the bridge was amplified by landscape designer Jeff Franklin, who helped cut in a natural water feature to enhance the arroyo. Franklin also worked to add privacy to the property itself without interfering with the views. He kept existing plant life, such as saguaro cacti, already in place and added 13 mature trees that would screen the home from the street and surrounding houses. “We wanted to keep what was there and match the existing plant materials and densities while also creating a sense of seclusion,” says Franklin. Personal touches at every turn work to enhance the welcoming feel of the overall space. The homeowners’ own photography and art purchased on travels play off the personalized ceiling plans and custom-made furnishings, including an armoire in the great room and a chandelier crafted of mesquite wood in the kitchen—both of which were conceived by designer Paula Den Boer. “The request was to have the home look and feel as if it was transported from Italy to Arizona,” Den Boer says, noting earth tones were selected for the home’s interiors because they are “a true Tuscan palette.” That palette paired with the exquisite craftsmanship throughout resulted in precisely the environment the homeowners set out to achieve, a place where family and friends could comfortably gather and enjoy a little bit of old-world style amid the breathtaking backdrop of the desert. But two years later, the house—with its monochromatic hues, hefty furnishings and tile floors—just didn’t feel like home and the owners turned to interior designer Jamie Herzlinger for help. The designer took one look at the house and knew it needed a change. “It was dark and gloomy, even though so many of the rooms opened onto these remarkable outdoor spaces,” she recalls. “Also, it lacked any kind of architectural detailing.” So Herzlinger, who is also a licensed contractor, went straight to work. An extensive inquiry led the designer to conclude that the owners were indeed classicists. Moreover, they desperately missed living with color, pattern, polish and warmth. “They wanted graceful moldings, burnished wood floors and some out-and-out glamour to make the place timeless and elegant,” Herzlinger says, answering their requests with a full renovation that accurately delivers on their vision.

Deciding on a design aesthetic that would feature a refined take on time-honored classics, Herzlinger started from scratch. Out went the not-so-old furniture, sold at auction, and out came the home’s original sterile tile floors, overpowering beams and heavy-handed cabinets. A few walls were also removed to bring in more light from the courtyard. These elements were replaced with elegant architectural millwork; columns steeped in neoclassical detailing; handsome cabinetry assuaged with fanciful trims; and wider apertures in every room to let light flow from space to space. Informal rooms and transitional spaces, such as the kitchen, family dining room and foyer, received gleaming black walnut plank floors to set them apart from parquet ones in the grander formal areas.

For the walls, Herzlinger traded the home’s original light brown hue for classic wall treatments drenched in color, texture and pattern, and a mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings was chosen for comfort and scale as well as design pedigree and glamour quotient. “She’d show us things to gauge what we liked, then push us a bit,” explains Wood. Herzlinger adds: “I didn’t have that much convincing to do. These are time-honored designs for a reason; they’re dazzling.” Indeed, bold choices such as vivid wallpapers, elegant fixtures that range from early 20th-century Bagues sconces to a beautiful rock crystal chandelier, and a mix of character-laden tables, chairs and accents—arrayed with a confident yet measured hand—gave every

KARA MANN
ROCK AND ROLL
AN AVANT-GARDE DESIGN SENSIBILITY PAIRED WITH SUBTLE SOPHISTICATION PROMISES AN OVER-THE-TOP DINING ROOM IN CHICAGO.
DISTINCTIVE DÉCOR Designer Kara Mann creates impeccable interiors for clients from her hometown of Chicago to the glittering city of Dubai. When asked about her favored fashion designer, she exclaims “Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. He makes rocker chic elegant,” she continues, almost inadvertently describing her own signature style. In the dining room pictured here, the draperies are made from Missoni fabric, while the chandelier mimics the punk theme of this year’s Met Ball. Recently, Mann launched a collection of supple leather fabrics with Moore & Giles, citing things such as a vintage Gucci motorcycle jacket as inspiration. Not surprising then that she crowns leather her favorite “non-neutral” neutral. Q+A How has your personal style evolved over the years? It’s become more edited, more sophisticated and more simplified. What is one trend that you’d love to see go? As far as interior design, I’d be happy not to see any more overdyed rugs, and for fashion I’m fairly tired of asymmetrical hems.
“I would describe my personal aesthetic and my interior design style as one in the same really...elegant, effortless edge.”

ROBERT PASSAL
DEFINITIVE EDGE
ADVENTUROUS PATTERNS, TAILORED LINES AND JUST THE RIGHT DOSE OF COLOR EQUAL A MODISH MASTERPIECE IN NEW YORK’S GRAMERCY PARK.
GENTLEMEN’S QUARTERS The living room of designer Robert Passal’s New York apartment, with its custom moldings and eclectic accessories, perfectly exhibits his aesthetic, self-described as “classic and tailored with a definitive edge.” Passal’s décor point of view effuses his personal style, although he believes “there is a vast difference between dressing yourself and dressing a room.” With interiors, “space, scale and functionality are all major factors,” he explains. Not one to shy away from color, Passal considers a wide range of shades to be the easiest way to incorporate fashion into the home, his favorite hue being aqua. “I’m often called a peacock,” Passal laughs, “which I’ll take as a chic term of endearment.” Q+A Do you ever use fashion fabrics in your design projects? I’m crazy for men’s suiting, especially gray flannel and cashmere chalk stripes used in upholstery. Do you side more with Chanel’s “remove one item before leaving the house” or Tony Duquette’s “more is more?” I fall somewhere in the middle, but the trick is knowing when to stop. Living with items you love, be it art, accessories or daily heirlooms, makes a house a home.

Favorite fashion designer? If I could cross-pollinate Tom Ford and Paul Stuart, I would turn one of my bedrooms into a walk-in closet.
“I’ve never been a fan of the ‘staged’ approach to decorating. Personal accessories can turn a mediocre space into a stunning home.”

TOBI TOBIN
NEUTRAL GROUND
SUBTLE PATTERNS, NOTEWORTHY SHAPES AND RICH TEXTURES TAKE CENTER STAGE IN A LAID-BACK CALIFORNIA LIVING SPACE.
INNATE STYLE Best known for a Hollywood-glam aesthetic in a mostly neutral palette, designer and shop owner Tobi Tobin believes that style comes from within, and as is the case with any tastemaker, she claims her tastes have evolved over the years. “I’ve come a long way from wearing preppy embroidered pants in Palm Beach,” she jokes. In her own Los Angeles living room, Tobin expertly layers creams, grays and wood tones, taking cues from Donna Karan—a favorite fashion designer. Her home also works as a place to try out new ideas for her eponymous shop on Sunset Boulevard, where she sells her own furniture collection among vintage pieces and signature candles. Q+A Best style advice? Style truly comes from within, but having the courage to live with it and express it to the world takes confidence. What’s your favorite unexpected neutral? Flax linen is a beautiful neutral, but only when paired with a range of other textures. How do you see fashion trends translated for interiors? Most often through color selection. As designers, we can’t help ourselves. Fashion and interiors have always gone hand in hand.

On the evening of May 4, the historic Arizona Inn hosted the 63rd annual Silver & Turquoise Ball, an elegant black-tie soiree featuring a beautiful setting, gourmet dinner and dancing under the stars. The Silver & Turquoise Board of Hostesses promotes, supports and encourages the preservation of Tucson’s historical traditions and diverse cultural heritage. The board is also proud to support the restoration of the Mission San Xavier del Bac and be one of its major benefactors.
