Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beautyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

Then, Phoenix Art Museum’s Independent Woman Luncheon featured over 50 impeccably designed tabletops and style insights by speaker Suzanne Kasler, and Tucson’s Heart & Stroke Ball, chaired by Ron and Patsy Sable, continued its reputation as one of Southern Arizona’s longest-running and most prestigious annual charity events. We also celebrated grand openings in Scottsdale at Alexander Sinclair, Inex Creative Floors, Kravet, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Rosewood Homes’ Sierra Highlands gated neighborhood, and we attended events with partners Arizona Residential Architects and IFDA. Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

For Arizona art purveyors, your summer to-do list just got a bit longer. This season, some of the area’s best galleries are introducing world-class exhibits meant to satisfy your cultural appetite. You have until May 29 to take in Max Estenger’s vibrant works at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson. On June 4, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art premieres “Silsila,” a haunting photo journal of Sama Alshaibi’s six-year journey through 17 Muslim countries in a timely study of feminine form and environmental instability. In Phoenix, make sure you catch the Arizona Costume Institute’s 50th anniversary show, presented by Max Mara, as well as photographer Edward Burtynsky’s exhibit, “Water” (pictured below), opening July 1, both at the Phoenix Art Museum. In this show, Burtynsky captures humbling aerial images depicting the human race’s tumultuous relationship with its most vital resource.

THE INSIDER PETER MAX BOWDEN

Though he launched his eponymous design firm just last year, Peter Max Bowden’s penchant for innovative interiors goes way back and can be credited to his upbringing in the world of real estate. His experience, most recently as design director at Dodd Mitchell Design, gained him a diverse portfolio of hospitality clients (think the Aria hotel and MGM Resorts International). “Our mission is to work with clients that seek to create something extraordinary,” says the designer, who recently completed the super-hip Yacht Club restaurant in Arcadia and splits his time between Aspen and his home base in Phoenix. Here, Bowden shares what’s happening in Arizona’s capital city. petermaxco.com What’s intriguing you in design at the moment? Phoenix, as a whole, is not only catching up to faster-paced urban centers, but there also seems to be an awakening of a new, hip Southwest design sensibility and style. Ones to watch: Veterans like Upward Projects and Aaron Chamberlin (of St. Francis and Phoenix Public Market) seem to consistently disrupt the area’s restaurant scene. Must-see design spots: I love visiting Arcosanti, a utopian village between Phoenix and Sedona, imagined by Italian architect Paolo Soleri. Also, an area must-see is artist James Turrell’s legacy project in the Painted Desert, Roden Crater. It’s been ongoing since the 1960s. What are you most excited about now? The continued growth of Union Market in downtown Phoenix. Union is a new type of boutique retail experience mixing local food and shopping. It is guaranteed to change the landscape of our already-shifting downtown. For the art enthusiast: I’m a fan of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, as it seems to frequently have exhibits that provide design and architectural intrigue.

10 a.m. Hit brunch at the beloved Phoenix Public Market. Chef Aaron is always changing up the menu for seasonal creativity and keeps the pastry shelf full of goodies. They have great coffee and farm-to-table food. I usually get poached eggs, crispy smashed potatoes and roasted veggies. 12 p.m. My go-to local coffee spot is Lux Downtown. Fuel up with a cup of joe and then hit my mostcoveted art studio, Fortoul West Studios. Located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, it is owned by Gabriel Fortoul and Isaac Fortoul, the amazing brothers behind cult clothing brand, 40owls. It’s one of the area’s coolest spots. 2 p.m. Treat yourself to vintage shopping in the Melrose District along 7th Street, south of Camelback: lots of rad vintage shopping troves offering the coolest finds from furniture to clothing to vinyl records. One of my favorites in the area is Red Modern Furniture, an amazing showroom with an interesting and beautiful furniture selection. 3 p.m. Pop into Camelback Flowershop for a bundle of freshly wrapped flowers and the perfect hostess gift. Hopefully you’ll come in on a Friday for #freshflowerhappyhour. Starting at 1 p.m., we crank up the music and open our large community doors to give visitors half-off our locally sourced blossoms. Stay awhile! 4:30 p.m. Time to hit happy hour at Crudo’s bar behind the Gaslight Square shopping center. It has an amazing cocktail menu and delicious appetizers. I am a whiskey gal, so I always get the Rebel’s Son; they know as soon as I walk in. Make sure you say hi to Riley, the sweet barkeep. 6 p.m. For dinner, go straight to Welcome Chicken + Donuts for its pho soup. If they’ve made it that day, then you are in luck.

Her sought-after floral studio and design shop in Phoenix’s Arcadia district came from a literal stop-and-smell-the-roses mentality and a deep-seeded passion for cultivating community. For Wilson, fresh flowers are as important to a person’s well-being as diet and exercise. She started Camelback Flowershop to transform the way her community thought of flowers in its desert landscape, and her offerings are sourced from mom-and-pop farms in northern Arizona up to the Pacific Northwest. Along with perfectly arranged blossoms and locally sourced shrubbery, inside Wilson’s shop, you’ll find regional art, handpicked furniture, artisanal homewares and an edited array of luxury apothecary items. She carries a variety of utilitarian garden tools, too, like German watering cans and polished-brass misters, and boasts a delicious assortment of smallbatch pantry products. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

Of all your products, which is your favorite and why? Glass tile. It has a reflective quality and gives off a wonderful energy. It feels spalike and nothing compares to the way it changes color depending on the time of day and movement of light in the water. What is inspiring you now? The simplicity of design and function in Japanese gardens always inspires us. If you learn the principles of Japanese design, you can apply them to anything. How important is it to have a cohesive style throughout an outdoor space? When cohesion is not evident, it stands out like the elephant in a room. You might not know exactly what it is about the space, but something is off.

he home is glitzy and elegant, with a very luxurious feel,” says interior designer Dana Lyon about the Scottsdale abode she recently completed for a newly married empty-nester couple. “Polished-silver accents as well as pops of color throughout create a sophisticated atmosphere that is perfect for the modern couple.” The couple, who ironically had lived in the same neighborhood although their paths had never crossed, met on a blind date. The blind date went so well that the husband proposed a year later—and that’s when the quest for a new house began. The mission was to find a brand-new residence that, according to the wife, featured an open-concept design, great views and ample privacy. However, “most of the homes we looked at were either too big, or the lot wasn’t

to our liking,” says the wife. Her husband then came up with a creative answer: “He told me that if I moved into his house, he would build me the most amazing closet I’d ever seen,” says the wife. Eventually, the couple turned to Lyon, formerly of Palm Design Group, whose stylish aesthetic was the perfect match for their transformational agenda, which included getting rid of virtually everything the couple previously owned. “We really wanted to make a fresh start,” says the wife. According to Lyon, the house had good bones with an open-concept layout and indoor-outdoor connectivity. “The home’s floor plan was great,” says the designer. “It’s a flowing layout with ample gathering space that made it the ideal house for entertaining.” Indeed, with its multiple public areas, the home can easily accommodate various LUXESOURCE.COM / 217

get-togethers, such as a recent charity event. “Guests noted how chic, inviting and comfortable the space was,” says the wife. “We wanted all of those things, and Dana helped us to achieve just that.” As a master of maximizing potential in a house, Lyon set to work touching just about every room and handling aspects of the project including new furnishings, draperies and accessories. “The house needed to be lighter and brighter,” says the wife. Upon entering the house, guests are greeted with a soaring living room that beautifully connects to an enclosed sun porch that extends into the kitchen and a dining room. “Here, I really wanted to create a warm, glamorous and inviting space,” Lyon says. “I envisioned what I call a desert-glam aesthetic.”

To achieve this look, the designer used materials featuring metallic hints and an abundance of warm neutrals with pops of blue. For example, shimmering silk draperies sparkling with metallic threads frame French doors leading from the living room to the covered loggia, a soft accompaniment to the custom Venetian plaster walls. “My style is to let neutral colors dominate a room,” Lyon says, noting that this feature allows one’s eye to rest. But the designer also added moments of vibrancy throughout the spaces. “The wife really loves the color blue, and we wanted to incorporate it as much as possible throughout,” Lyon says. A patterned rug and two silk-upholstered chairs, for instance, display this pigment in the living room, while the dining room’s

glossy table base (painted to match the color of the wife’s Prada shoes) and artwork splash the hue into an otherwise muted space. A side table found outside by the pool, as well as pillows, table lamps and a rug in a guest room, also features the vibrant tone. Lyon’s pièce de résistance, though, is the master bedroom, where her preferred neutral palette imbues the room with serenity. “We wanted this space to have a glamorous feel, so we used mostly silver as the color inspiration,” Lyon says of the décor, which includes a mirrored four-poster bed positioned against a window wall swathed in mink-toned silk draperies. For all-out opulence, however, the master closet rises to the occasion—just as the husband promised. Working with designer Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Interiors on certain aspects of the master closet and master

bathroom, the owners had a wall knocked down and merged with a small bedroom to expand the original space. That additional square footage allowed the installation of floor-to-ceiling cabinets along one wall, featuring fabric inserts printed with excerpts from Lyon’s parents’ French wedding certificate. Another wall of closets is fronted in mirrors that reflect the room’s fluted-wood island with a marble top. With all the changes now in place, the husband didn’t just make good on his word—he surpassed it and more. “That closet went far beyond anything I could’ve ever imagined,” says the wife, who is equally happy with the rest of the house. “We really use every room, and each space provides a different feel.” Adds Lyon: “The clients love their home and are delighted that every room is tailored to their needs.” Sounds like the perfect fresh start.

o truly appreciate a Daniel Germani creation, one needs to consider all the angles. Take the Phoenix furniture designer’s Nogal chair: At first glance, the chair features a pure walnut frame and straight lines. But stroll around to the back, or examine it from the side, and you’ll notice its soft curves and inlaid wenge work. “I want people to slowly discover the details,” says Germani. “I love when a client finds something unexpected.” Germani’s path to furniture making—and to Phoenix—was similarly unforeseen. The Argentineborn designer originally studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires before switching his focus. “Furniture allows me to create products in a more fast and furious way,” Germani says. “Executing a building can take years, but with furniture, if you’re dedicated, you can go from draft to final fabrication in a few months.” Germani soon moved to Arizona to earn his master’s degree in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management to better manage his creative pursuits—and the rest is history. Today, Germani runs both a thriving furniture business and a burgeoning commercial and residential design practice. In the last few years, he’s created interiors for a number of projects, and has an on-going collaboration with global surfaces manufacturer Cosentino, conceiving such products as the Chaos console. Pushing the envelope in terms of materials and techniques is a passion of Germani’s and working with Dekton, an ultra-compact surface material from Cosentino, allows him to create products durable enough for indoor-outdoor use. “I love using different textures and finishes in my pieces,” says the designer, who works with Mark Easson Studio to fabricate his metal components. Additionally, Germani is in the midst of another important project: a remodel for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix. With so many projects underway, it’s an amazing feat that Germani still has time to design his creations by hand. “I need that relationship with the pen and paper,” he explains. “It’s like clothing. I often need to do some tailoring to make a piece perfect. It’s all a matter of customization.”

or designer and homeowner James McIntyre, the historic Arizona Biltmore hotel is much more than an iconic Phoenix landmark; it’s a divine inspiration. “I love the moodiness of the hotel and the use of things like gold and silver leaf in the ballroom,” says McIntyre, who splits his time between Canada and Arizona and went so far as to gold-leaf the living room walls of his Calgary residence. Since its inception in 1929, the Biltmore, dubbed the “Jewel of the Desert,” has been a go-to resort for Hollywood royalty the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, and the designer planned to instill some of the hotel’s sophisticated luxury and Gatsby-like glamour into his own stateside retreat in Phoenix. The dated Spanish Colonial bungalow McIntyre purchased—so untouched that it still had the vacuum marks on the cream wall-to-wall carpets—proved to be the perfect canvas for the glitzy-West-Hollywood-meets-exotic-Morocco vibe he envisioned. “I had a fantasy in my mind of what a home in the desert should be,” he says, “and that meant doing something that contrasted with the area’s bright light and that also utilized elements from my travels to Turkey and India.” McIntyre began his renovation by first tossing that original carpet, eschewing beige and white tones as a whole. Instead, his response to the area’s glaring sun and extreme heat was a less predictable layering of muted grays and blacks. “It makes you feel instantly cool,” says the designer, who opted to salvage the home’s original ceiling beams, stain them charcoal gray and then introduce wideplank-oak floors in a similar tone in the main living areas. The existing columns and Palladian windows that establish the structure’s symmetry and define the entry also made the saved list. Here, the addition of two precisely placed burled-walnut chairs and new laser-cutwood room dividers of McIntyre’s own design further cement a sense of order. “The dividers were inspired by a window I photographed in India,” he says. Just beyond the entry, a pair of black-velvet sofas trimmed with bronze upholstery tacks—an homage to

French designer Jacques Garcia—face off in the living room over a decidedly Art Deco cube coffee table, and one can almost imagine Lady Gaga, whose portrait dominates one wall over another seating area, swooning over the setting. The seating is accented with black-andwhite ikat pillow fabrics from Istanbul. “Not everything from that part of the world is about color,” McIntyre says. Three oversize Moroccan pendants are striking elements overhead, while underfoot, the unexpected pairing of a dark cowhide rug and a carpet with a modern graphic motif adds texture; dual mirrors above the sofas create the illusion of more space. “I don’t label my aesthetic as one type of design or another,” says McIntyre about his personal brand of chic. “It’s a hip mix of styles that’s more about the drama of places like India than a literal translation.” By McIntyre’s own admission, nothing was worth keeping in the existing cramped kitchen with its swinging saloon doors. So, a total gut renovation in collaboration with Stephanie Brown of Affinity Kitchens opened it to the neighboring dining room, making way for one big entertaining space. The kitchen is now handsomely outfitted with black-lacquered cabinets and accented with brass pulls, the latter a reference to the metal elements at the owner’s favorite hotel. In lieu of a standard sit-down dining room set, a raised table surrounded by barstools better suits the kitchen’s recreational purpose. “I don’t do a lot of cooking when I’m in town,” says McIntyre, who lined the ceiling with twinkly star-shaped lights to spark the sheen on the cabinets. “Every hour is happy hour at my house, and I wanted it to feel more like a club or a bar.” A shift in mood occurs in the master suite, where the melding of styles continues but in a less dramatic vein. Here, two cognac leather chairs with carved bases—a nod to the home’s Spanish Colonial architecture—are juxtaposed with a painting by Michael Schreiner and a Moorish-style rug that grounds the space. For continuity here and throughout the house, McIntyre color-matched the dwelling’s stucco walls to the pre-cast concrete blocks pioneered by the Biltmore hotel’s consulting architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. All the main living spaces and the master suite open to the backyard, where the pool was the only rescued element. “The outside was really tired,” says McIntyre, who refurbished the pool with blue tiles from Turkey and installed two covered cabanas with black-and-white striped pullback curtains. Visitors in a guest room enjoy the more tranquil view of the front courtyard, which features newly planted vines on the wall and an awning over the front door that transformed the entry. When he was finished, McIntyre had succeeded in infusing all aspects of the house, both inside and outdoors, with just enough edge to make it unique and memorable. “I tried to create character throughout the home,” he says. “I used exceptional design elements to turn a typical Arizona bungalow into something really special.” Mission accomplished.

live a creative life,” says Phoenix artist Carrie Marill. “From the patterns on my clothing and how I plate my dinner, to the color choices in each of my paintings, my approach to living life and making art is seamless.” Portraying her visual language through flourishes of color and graphic representations, Marill translates her keen point of view by observing, emulating and transcending patterns—specifically in works found in the Native American, Mexican and North African cultures. “When I see another culture’s visual language expressed, I want to learn that language,” says Marill. “And it is through this exploration that I create my own voice.” Marill’s work space, Combine Studios—which she co-owns with her husband, Matthew Moore—is both a nod to Moore’s background as a fourthgeneration farmer and a play on the live/work environment of the studio; it is housed in the Roosevelt Row Arts District, where it doubles as Arizona State University’s International Artist Residency Program. Here, Marill typically creates one piece per month (using materials like linen and paper as well as egg tempera, acrylic and gouache paints), prepares two to three shows a year, and updates her blog—home to her inspirations and research. “It’s my own digital sketchbook where people can find the backstory of my pieces,” she says. Painting professionally since 2006, Marill holds dear her environment, the landscape and the cultural history that surrounds her, all of which have a profound effect on her steadfast aesthetic. Case in point: A recent trip to Santa Fe provided ample inspirational eye candy in the form of weavings, beaded jewelry, quilts and the surrounding views, while exposure to the desert and visits to the Heard Museum offer daily influences. Whether exhibiting at the Lisa Sette Gallery or at Conduit Gallery in Dallas, where this June, she’ll focus on sculptural works including custom lasercut panels, Marill’s art carries a duality between traditional and modern ideas. “It’s an important dialogue that’s light-hearted but profound. I like to infuse my work with a sense of humor to offset the often-deep nature of modern art,” Marill says, noting that creating art is playful yet physically demanding. “It’s mental gymnastics. The goal is to reflect the environments I’m exposed to and have a respectful distance from the original forms.”

Positioned underneath a floating glass bridge, the lower-level art gallery in this Paradise Valley home features flooring and a wall, both from Concrete Works, that serve as an ideal backdrop for the owners’ contemporary art and sculpture collection. Architect and general contractor Andy Byrnes fabricated the custom steel staircase.

hey wanted a rock star house,” says architect and general contractor Andy Byrnes of the Paradise Valley dwelling he designed for homeowners Deborah and Kevin Pshebniski, a couple with one teenage son. “It needed to have a wow factor in terms of execution, finishes, furniture, art and the views.” Indeed, when the Pshebniskis decided to build their brandnew abode, they imagined a hillside setting with dramatic vistas. “We wanted a glass box that would hang off the land,” Deborah says. Situated high up on a hill overlooking the mountains in the distance and the city lights below, the concrete-glass-and-steel structure was designed specifically for the rocky site. “The home is truly dug into the property,” Byrnes says. “We had to install almost 30 rock pins to hold back the excavation. It’s a modern example of desert hillside architecture.” Although the owners originally hired Byrnes to remodel their previous home, it wasn’t long before the trio were touring empty lots together. “Andy persuaded us that renovating our prior home wouldn’t get us exactly what we wanted,” Kevin says, noting that Byrnes’ expertise in manufacturing his own door and window systems was also a selling point. “His use of industrial-grade materials such as cast concrete, steel and commercial-grade glass really resonated with me.” The exposed concrete walls and steel beams create an industrial backdrop for sleeker surfaces like the terrazzo floors as well as white cabinetry in the kitchen. “In terms of materials, there’s a really good push between rawness and refinement,” Byrnes says. To emphasize the home’s rectilinear lines, custom powdercoated panels—that line up with doors and windows—were used to clad the exterior as well as the interior ceiling.

B&B Italia’s Charles sectional and Diesis coffee table, both purchased from Diva Group in Los Angeles, create a comfortable seating area in the living room and rest on terrazzo flooring from Arizona Concrete Repair. The fireplace is clad with Linac marble from Picasso Tile & Stonework that emphasizes the home’s rectilinear architecture.

“Each decision reinforced the previous one,” Byrnes says. “There’s this rhythm to the structure, and each element talks to the others.” For example, zinc strips in the terrazzo floors and horizontal veining in the living room’s marble fireplace coincide while further enhancing the home’s architectural lines. From below, the structure appears to float above its concrete foundation. “I wanted the house to feel like it was magically transported to the mountain with as little disturbance as possible,” Byrnes says. During construction, Byrnes tinkered with the placement of windows to emphasize certain views while disguising others. Floor-to-ceiling expanses of glass, for instance, provide unparalleled vistas in the main living areas. The guesthouse above the garage, on the other hand, has high and narrow windows that frame the mountain range while cropping out neighboring houses. “Because of the way it’s sited, you never experience the neighbors from inside the house,” he says. “Being both the architect and the general contractor allowed me to execute subtle ideas, such as window placements, during the construction that we might not have been able to do otherwise.” Actually constructing the house, however, was not without its challenges, as site constraints forced Byrnes to build the foundation a little at a time while the team worked its way down from the far end of the lot. “Since we couldn’t build the house from the bottom up, we had to start at the top of the site and work our way down,” he says. A glass bridge connects the main living areas with the master suite, providing a bird’s-eye view of the lower-level art gallery. Here, the owners’ paintings and sculptures are displayed against a concrete wall. “The concrete walls are holding back the mountain,” Byrnes says. “I wanted the house to tell its own story about what’s structural versus what’s not.”

The couple’s striking art collection flows from here to the rest of the house, such as in the living room, where a ceramic figure looks as if it could have been carved from the rock that was excavated to build the home. The contemporary pieces harmonize with the sleek Italian furnishings selected by the Pshebniskis. “We wanted to make the interiors our own,” Deborah says, noting that they often turned to Byrnes for advice on the interior finishes. “Our styles really mesh well together.” Also in the living room, the owners paired leather swivel chairs with a long purple sectional that takes advantage of the expansive view. They maintained that minimal, modern approach in the master suite, as well, with a platform bed and a streamlined armchair and ottoman placed in front of a steel fireplace. “We sought a sleek, cleanlined interior, which complements the contemporary

use of the steel, glass and concrete construction materials,” Kevin says. Behind the house, a swimming pool resides near a lower-level living area featuring a fireplace. Here, landscape designer Stephen Bardorf incorporated a variety of materials to construct planting spaces, some more utilitarian than others. “The design inspiration for these planting areas come from the house and the rock upon which it sits,” Bardorf says. “There’s a distinct transition between the house, as fabricated by human hands, and the geologic site conditions, which were not. They meet in the middle, partially outside, at the garden.” In the end, the homeowners achieved their ideal haven. “It’s an amazing home, and we love everything about it,” Deborah says. “Andy was really fun to work with. We’ve become great friends, and I think we always will be.”

ROSEWOOD HOMES GRAND OPENING

Over 100 realtors and industry leaders attended the preview opening of Rosewood Homes’ new Sierra Highlands neighborhood in North Scottsdale. The fabulous model home boasts an interior courtyard, Gaggenau appliances and Ortal fireplaces. Over 500 people toured the property, culminating with the sale of several of its 25 homes.
