EDITOR’S LETTER
W
ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES
LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”
LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68
Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

New York City | indigochre.com
▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. RADAR / NEW GUARD AMY HERMAN
Palm Beach | amyhermaninteriors.com
Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

MEET the MAKER RYAN WALSH
How did LumberLust come about? As soon as I started visiting local sawmills, my imagination ran wild. We’ve built our shop one tool at a time, slowly investing with each table delivered and expanding our possibilities. What inspires you? Nature and fashion are my two biggest inspirations. While clothing is made to fit a person’s body and lifestyle, projecting a sense of identity, furniture should do the same for a space

and tell you something about the people who live there. What is your process? It depends on if we’re creating a commissioned piece versus building something for sale in a boutique. Wood selection is at the core of either scenario, and we source mostly reclaimed hardwoods from Phoenix, maple and walnut from Washington, and other sustainable exotics upon request.
meet the maker photo: courtesy lumberlust designs.
Growing up in a hands-on family, Ryan Walsh learned early on how to problem-solve and improvise—which served him well when he and his wife bought their first home and taught themselves to restore midcentury modern furniture. From those DIY beginnings, his company, LumberLust, is catching fire—and catching on, appearing on HGTV in the home of designer Landon Mondragon and specializing in contemporary and rustic designs carved from reclaimed lumber. Luxe caught up with him to learn about his methodology and more. lumberlust-designs.com

POWERHOUSE: THE LIFE AND WORK OF JUDITH CHAFEE Written by architects Christopher Domin and Kathryn McGuire, Powerhouse is a visual history of the late American architect Judith Chafee. Her work kept a sense of place and environment at the forefront, particularly in Arizona’s desert landscape, balancing views and natural light with exposed concrete and wood. Working in what was then a primarily male profession, the trailblazing Tucson resident was the sole woman in her graduating class from Yale University Architectural School, where she studied under Paul Rudolph. Chafee worked with luminaries such as Eero Saarinen, Edward Larrabee Barnes and Walter Gropius’ The Architects Collaborative. One of her most celebrated works is Tucson’s Ramada House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. papress.com
TALKING SHOP Jamilyn Fournier’s The Collector’s House (The Shops Gainey Village, Scottsdale) is a lifestyle and interiors destination that is truly a feast for the eyes and the heart. Tall, aged wooden doors from a French castle mix elegantly with African tribal sculptures and a oneof-a-kind prototype 1950s chandelier in the high-ceilinged space. In the showroom, exquisite handcrafted furniture has its own spotlight. The boutique shelves are lined with stories, and curator and founding principal Fournier can recount the origin of each piece, which expresses a connection to the community of artists and designers here and around the world. thecollectorshouse.biz Describe your vision for the expansion to include a showroom. We are pure artistry, and the lines we carry are inspirational to me. Verellen is Belgian-inspired and perfected in America, and Alfonso Marina is the original ebanista, made in Mexico City. Both companies are family businesses with the creators actively involved in every step, every day. This exquisite, handcrafted furniture is holding court in its own spotlight. How do you choose what to feature? I seek out the organic. Everything we carry is handmade or bench-made. I’m drawn to items that make the everyday extraordinary. I still love to set a beautiful table, even if we’re barefoot on the patio. I feel honored to partner with so many artisans and I want to be a resource for the many talented designers in our area.

OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS
Several Valley showrooms are starting off the new year with fresh new digs. After opening stores in Chicago and Denver, Organic Looms (2720 N. 68th St., Suite 1) can now be found in Scottsdale. Their modern and contemporary handcrafted rugs (right) in wool, silk and other natural fibers gracefully handle long-term wear. Infusing classic design elements in unexpected ways, Heather Ryan’s H. Ryan Studio (6615 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 108) moved from its Phoenix location to Scottsdale. “We shop locally for fashionable antiques and blend them with our trade resources, providing a one-of-a-kind look for our clients,” Ryan says. Scandinavian Designs (7540 W. Bell Road, Glendale) is bringing its Nordic style and quality craftsmanship to the West Valley by adding a second Arizona location in Glendale.

FIRST LOOK KRISTEN FORGIONE
After attending fashion school in Los Angeles, Kristen Forgione of The Lifestyled Co (4113 N. 44th St., Phoenix) returned to Arizona to fulfill her creative passion for color and design. After launching her first shop in Gilbert, she opened a flagship store in Arcadia. Both are meticulously designed and curated for a shopping experience where “organic desert living” comes to life. “The name The Lifestyled Co came from wanting to establish a translatable look in all areas of life,” says Forgione (below, with her husband, Vince, CEO and owner), “from fashion in my early days to interiors and back again.” thelifestyledco.com
Take us behind the scenes of The Lifestyled Co. We offer everything for a simplified living space, but with cohesion and depth. Clients want to rid their lives of excess, making sure each piece is calculated and necessary. It’s the best and highest level of trust. They tell me, “Make my space simpler, but ensure there is a story with organic desert living as the main star.”

DEFINING MOMENT
MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING
6
Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME
Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com
The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

“Cameldale Estates is the best version of luxury Paradise Valley has ever experienced.”
Cameldale Estates
Crown Canyon Estates
First Street Old Town
Cameldale Estates, located in the heart of Paradise Valley, Arizona, features 11 high-end, modern estates that are independently gated. From the second one drives down the street, they are transformed. Palm tree-lined streets tie the estates together, while mature green hedges provide the privacy everyone desires. Inspired by iconic architects from around the world, these estates will be built by Rich Brock of BedBrock Developers, designed by C.P. Drewett of Drewett Works and finished with Claire Ownby of Ownby Design. Every estate begins with a well-laid-out, 6,000-square-foot floor plan that carries its own unique style and design features to honor the property’s independence. The fit and finishes are ultra-high-end and every inch and view will captivate, delivering a true first-class experience. Purchase now; visit cameldaleestates.com
Crown Canyon Estates’ luxury modern home community will be built by BedBrock Developers and designed by Drewett Works and Mara Interior Design, bringing this amazing architectural symphony to life. Between Paradise Valley and the Arizona Biltmore lies a uniquely hidden canyon, with 12 one-of-a-kind homesites—2 to 5 acres nestled along the southeastern boundary of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve—set to begin construction in 2020. The canyon’s surrounding ridges and peaks evoke the silhouette of a crown; thus, the name, Crown Canyon. This will be the most private, gated, exclusive community in Arizona. It is designed for the most discreet, affluent clientele who appreciate the ultimate in luxury. Taking reservations now; visit crowncanyon.com
Never seen before in Old Town Scottsdale! A midcentury modern design with revolutionary features, this beautiful collection of two urban residences designed by architect C.P. Drewett, in collaboration with BedBrock Developers and Mara Interior Design, offers best-inclass features, such as: three floors of bespoke interiors, three master bedrooms, spacious lounges, elevator access to all floors, plenty of open indoor-outdoor spaces fit for entertaining alfresco, and a three-car direct access garage. These unique, turnkey homes are located in the epicenter of Old Town Scottsdale, in one of the best locations available. Mere blocks from the best dining, entertainment and recreation experiences, these new construction homes define true luxury. Purchase now; visit urbanresidencesoldtown.com

Est Est, Inc. established in 1959, is the oldest of the interior design companies in Scottsdale, Arizona. The original owners, William Benner and Pat Maas, pioneered the path for interior design in Arizona. Est Est’s original design studio was located on Main Street in “Old Town” Scottsdale. In tandem with establishing Arizona’s place in design, the original owners worked on many notable projects, including the original design concept for the Phoenix Zoo with the Maytag family. Mr. Benner and Mr. Maas were very active in many local and national events of the times and even designed a Southwest Room for the 1965 New York World’s Fair. Tony Sutton began working for Pat and Bill in 1979, and purchased the company from them in 1984. In 1997 Mr. Sutton moved the Design studio to its current location in the Perimeter Center. As a leader in design innovation, Est Est continues the tradition of community involvement, exceptional design and unparalleled customer service. With 60-years of rich history and a notable past, Est Est has enjoyed distinguished recognition for their work on custom homes, club houses, and boutique hotels across multiple design styles. Our success is your success and we invite you to help us celebrate.

CANDELARIA DESIGN ASSOCIATES It started on a napkin … where all great ideas germinate. “It began with a sketch and grew from there,” says architect Mark Candelaria, referring to the founding of his firm, Candelaria Design Associates. “Shortly after, I designed my first home in Silverleaf, and thus began the growth and branding of Candelaria Design.” In August 1999, he brought Vivian Ayala on board, who has since become a principal and director of architecture. In 2005, principal and CFO Evelyn Jung joined the firm, followed by principal and director of architecture Meredith Thomson—both becoming partners in 2018. Together, this multi-award-winning team has received many accolades, including Masters of the Southwest and the No. 1 ranking in Arizona for four years in a row. “The best milestone, though, has been our effortless client referrals,” Candelaria says. With its 20th anniversary just passed, Candelaria Design has much to celebrate, including its many home designs in Arizona’s most luxurious developments, such as Verrado, Desert Mountain and Fulton Ranch. From sprawling estates and remodels, to homes with a smaller footprint, Candelaria Design continues its project reach with residences across the country, two restaurants near completion and the expansion of its Scottsdale office.

“ Our greatest satisfaction is having a client tell us that they never want to leave their home because it’s just that spectacular.”

Ask the Expert What style(s) is your firm most known for? Our signature design elements are not materials or styles, but more about harmonizing the indoor-outdoor areas. What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? Technology builds our brand by reaching a huge audience, but we also reach out directly. This approach also informs our creative process. We love CAD, Lumion and SketchUp—but draw by hand to keep the ‘art’ in architecture.

Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work. The biggest influencers of our work are client satisfaction and timeless designs. There’s a reason realtors add our name to their listings. Our brand increases a home’s value.

ARCHITECTS
ROBINETTE ARCHITECTS Since 1984, Robinette Architects has been pursuing the craft and art of architecture. The firm was established after its principal and namesake, Ron Robinette, spent time working in other offices and realized his desire to guide all elements of a project. With the client’s vision at the heart of every design, Robinette and his team have found success in a continual desire to learn, adding knowledge and skills to their repertoire with each new endeavor. “Our mission is to work toward being the leader in custom residential design,” Robinette says. “The secret is simple: listen to our clients and work to find out how we can best enhance the way they live. We hope that our clients enjoy living in the spaces we create for them.” In an area known for its desert landscapes, Robinette considers the uniquely beautiful, harsh yet fragile, surroundings of each residence a significant influence. The environment plays another role, too. “Many of our clients have selected land with special qualities,” Robinette says. “Sometimes these properties are in custom neighborhoods with environmental considerations. Other times, they are challenging sites on which to build. It’s our job to quantify these characteristics and determine the best approach.” Imbuing each design with his own definition of luxury—“elegance, order and quality that can be seen and felt”— Robinette and his carefully cultivated team strive to excel in a full range of services and help their clients achieve their residential dreams.

“ Studying classic and cuttingedge designs helps us respond to sites in more innovative, favorable ways.”
Ask the Expert First project that put your company on the map? Two custom homes featured in a 1987 Street of Dreams event. A professional chose one of the homes for first place, and the other was designated the winner by the public. What inspires you? Many things can influence a project, including our client’s enthusiasm and vision, or the beauty of the building site. Usually, it is both and more.

Tips for clients to make the design experience more rewarding? Always feel free to share your ideas, goals and desires. The more your architect knows, the better he or she will be able to design something just for you.

BRAD LEAVITT
“ My mentors have all taught me that nothing is easy; hard work is everything; and nothing is free.”
A Finer Touch Construction 480.550.0445 aft_construction aftconstruction.com Growing up in San Diego in a family of electricians, builder Brad Leavitt gained a passion for high-quality construction early on. Throughout high school, he worked for his uncle’s electrical company, namely in custom homes throughout Rancho Santa Fe and Coronado Island. These experiences inspired Leavitt to pursue a degree in construction management from Brigham Young University in Utah. After graduating, he took a position with a builder in Phoenix, and the rest is history for the president of A Finer Touch Construction, whose building prowess has made a name for himself and his firm. “Our homes are designed to entertain,” he says. “Our great rooms and kitchens are very large to accommodate guests, friends and families, while the bedrooms are smaller to entice children to be out with guests and family. Indoor-outdoor living is a must with large multi-sliders that embrace the Arizona lifestyle.” While Leavitt and his wife love to travel, having vacationed this past year in London, Paris, Venice and Rome, he looks closer to home when describing his dream project. “My dream is to work with a top Arizona designer and architect, with a client that would allow us full control,” he says. “We love the opportunity to build something that hasn’t been done before.”
Share one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you. I’m color blind. I am often asked my opinion in regard to color selections and my team always has a good laugh. I still love to share what I see, even though it may be different. If you weren’t in this profession, you’d be ... In the professional sports field, analyzing data, salary caps and general management; maybe even a production role on TV or a podcast. Tell me about your favorite store to shop. I love Charles Tyrwhitt. They don’t have any stores out west, but I’ve been to their locations in London and New York. The British do a great job with fit, style and size. List three design rules you work by. 1. Have purpose: Understand the needs and lifestyle of the client, that way the design and architecture make sense. 2. Natural light: Always find ways to bring natural light to the space; light provides happiness and motivation. 3. Keep it simple: Sometimes we overthink and add too much complexity; less is more.

What’s on your desk? Résumés from those looking to work for our firm; contracts for upcoming projects; notes of urgent items to address; and brochures of suppliers and subcontractors looking to work with us.

Every home features large gathering spaces to entertain guests and spend time with family. This great room is no exception with 16-foot ceilings and black-painted walls. 4. KOSS DESIGN+BUILD KOSS design+build is an architecture and construction firm dedicated to timeless design and sustainable building. Two tenets president Erik Koss found value in early on. “Simple, clean, timeless design and construction has always been my goal,” he says. “Natural materials, simple systems and well-crafted construction combine to create projects that stand the test of time.” Client inclusion is a huge part of this process, with a heightened focus on what clients want versus what they need. “For those unsure of what they want, that is where our experience and knowledge come into play,” he says. “And for those who do know, it is our responsibility to elevate their ideas to create the best design and craft possible.” Whether working on the design solely or in collaboration, KOSS design+build stays involved from day one, and in all aspects. Providing both design and contracting services allows Koss and his team to control cost and quality, while creating finely detailed homes and buildings. “All projects, regardless of size and budget, are rooted in sustainable ideals and brought to life in the build process,” he says. But sustainability never comes at the cost of style, marrying the clients’ specific needs and desires with expressive, modern materials and construction methods.

“ Boiling down a design to its most important elements and celebrating those elements is always the goal.”

Ask the Expert Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work and approach to it? My mother was born and raised in Norway as well as my uncle, who is an architect and still resides there. I had a romanticized view of him designing in the Norwegian countryside that influenced my decision to go into design. My father also pushed me to consider how cars, buildings and systems were built and designed. These two men set my career path before I knew where my life would take me.

What is the first project that put your company on the map? Over a decade ago, we were fortunate to work on one of our largest projects. This home had every challenge one could imagine: difficult access, an extreme slope, sophisticated systems, high-end finishes and custom details. That project became a milestone in terms of design, construction and notoriety.

ETTA COWDREY AND CAROLINE SWABACK Studio V Interior Architecture & Design 480.922.3200 studio.v.interiors studiovinteriors.com Studio V approaches every project with the underlying fundamentals of collaboration, both internally and externally. For Etta Cowdrey, CEO, and Caroline Swaback, manager of Studio V Interior Architecture & Design, their design vision is driven by the voice of the firm’s clients and executed through collective efforts and precise project management. “Our inspiration is conceived from many facets of the creative world, but authenticity and establishing a genuine sense of place are at the core of our methodology,” Cowdrey says. Near or far, the boutique firm caters to high-end residential and hospitality clientele on an international stage. “We translate our knowledge of the way people live in their private environments into the approach of our hospitality projects,” Swaback says. Staying true to the principles established by the firm’s founder, Vernon Swaback (an award-winning architect and last living apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright), Etta and Caroline design by three directives: Understand the rules so you can properly break them; interiors should be on trend, but never trendy; and design holistically, so the interior becomes an extension of the architecture. “Our creative perspectives are unique, but we are all inspired by the importance of design and how it affects daily lives,” they say.
“ The idea that we can impact environments and experiences is extremely rewarding.”

DREWETT WORKS Architect C.P. Drewett always finds the good, in the bad. In his hands, what could be an unfortunate or challenging situation, becomes an opportunity, even, a feat of design. In 2003, he renovated a home that was destroyed by fire. During construction, it was selected as the Showcase House for a local magazine and was toured by thousands of people. “Untold opportunities resulted from this exposure,” he says. Likewise, while Drewett embraces the beauty of Arizona’s desert landforms in all of his work, it’s his study of the surrounding high-density, low-income areas that provide some of his greatest insights. “Poverty in design often yields the essence of a solution,” he says. Upon the success of the Showcase House, many one-ofa-kind luxury homes followed. And his firm, Drewett Works, obliged, eventually adding hospitality and luxury branded communities to its portfolio. All of these experiences led to designing the estate homes for The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Paradise Valley. Currently, Drewett and his team are working on real estate opportunities in Arizona, Colorado and Mexico—where his next office is set to open—in addition to a marina on the northern Baja peninsula. Proof that a positive perspective yields a favorable outcome.

What are some ways clients can work with professionals to ensure a painless design process? Honesty and focus are what I need the most. Indifference is the bane of my existence. In what ways do you include the client in your creative process? Everything I do is based upon a ‘marriage’ with my clients as we collaborate through the entire process.

THE GREEN ROOM COLLABORATIVE Traveling off the beaten path, exploring nature’s wonders, and spending time in historic gardens and architectural masterpieces provide lasting inspirations for landscape designer Charlie Ray. His award-winning firm, The Green Room Collaborative, draws from these interactions to create “clean-lined, contemporary hardscapes with wild landscapes that juxtapose styles and influences,” as Ray describes them. The same could be said to describe a recent project with Wiseman and Gale Interiors. “We brought together a high variety of plant materials, textures, hardscape and top dressings to create an ever-evolving living art installation,” he says. “This project completely transformed a busy, design-focused intersection of Old Town Scottsdale, bringing back an elevated, native Sonoran Desert landscape to the heart of the city.” The Sonoran Desert often informs Ray’s approach, saying, “It creates moments of pause, reflection, and an endless sense of awe in our work and in our lives.” Clients also play an integral role, creating a cohesive, functional design that grows with their needs and lifestyle. What’s next? “We are venturing into designing botanical gardens, public parks and plazas,” Ray says. The perfect showcase for their unique take on landscape architecture and design.

SEAVER FRANKS ARCHITECTS Michael W. Franks, principal of Seaver Franks Architects, defines luxury as a feeling of “absolute personal fulfillment.” Designing built environments for close to four decades, Franks remains as passionate as ever about helping his clients achieve absolute personal fulfillment through his work. While Franks and his team have brought forth a noteworthy portfolio since 1975, he considers his greatest success to be the sustainable firm that he has built, which allows him to continue to do the work that he’s so passionate about. Whether master-planning a multi-use development, restoring a historic cathedral or designing someone’s dream home, Franks fuels his boundless creativity by putting himself into the project and “pushing it around from the inside,” much like a potter at the wheel. “We strive to bring enthusiasm to every piece of the built environment that we are able to shape,” he explains. Working with honest materials and optimizing the natural setting, the Seaver Franks team is always aiming for the most thoughtful and visually exciting solutions, while simultaneously balancing logistics, budgets and timelines to meet their clients’ needs.

What’s your dream creative project? I thrive in a team environment and believe that magic is made through the chemistry of collaboration. Any project that draws upon our collective design talent and gives us the opportunity to collaborate with other experts in their fields is a dream creative project for us. Type of work and style your firm is most known for? Rather than being known for a particular style, we endeavor to find the best design solutions for our clients. There is an inclination to do what we know is right. Here, a style emerges from an expectation about quality; a solidity, but with an ease of composition; an emphasis on flow and functionality, though always with a regard for materials, how they relate to one another and their context.

LAURA KEHOE DESIGN Creating spaces where family and friends can kick their feet up and relax is a common theme in Laura Kehoe’s designs. “We have been told by clients that they find our work to be beautiful, but also very livable,” says Kehoe, principal of her namesake firm, Laura Kehoe Design. Celebrating 10 years in business this year, the firm’s growth has come about very organically. The first project that put the company on the map was a fantastic oceanfront home in Del Mar, California. “We have worked on three homes with this family since then. They are extremely special people and I am forever grateful for the opportunity,” Kehoe says. “Every project we complete seems to lead to another wonderful one.” Her long list of clients and what each brings to the table provide a constant source of inspiration. “I love to travel and always return with fresh ideas to bring to our projects,” she says, referring to a project her team is currently working on that includes a fantastic bird room with skylights for the homeowners’ exotic family members. “We love what we do every day and feel grateful that we get to work on some of the most custom and luxurious homes.”

MARA INTERIOR DESIGN “My greatest accomplishment to date is finding the balance with my children and those close to me, while building a boutique design studio,” says Mara Green, owner and principal designer of Mara Interior Design. Several milestone experiences along the way informed her career success, including growing up dancing, and studying and living abroad in London for six years. Both allowed for design growth through travel and experiencing different cultures, giving her a more worldly perspective and relatability to clients. “After returning to the States and to school for interior design as a mother of two boys, I eventually branched out from working as an interior designer to founding Mara Interior Design,” she says. Beginning with primarily remodels from the comfort of her home, Green was eventually awarded her first new build, leading to multiple luxury residential homes and commercial projects. Timeless allure and design awareness are key to her stylistic approach. “Our aim is to create timeless spaces with a foundation of minimalistic beauty, allowing for the individual style and lifestyle of the client to come through,” she says. Taking inspiration from travel, art and photography, Green infuses every design with modern European influence, paying tribute to where her love of design was born.

What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in? A modern renovation in the wine country of Chianti, Italy. In what ways do you include the client in your creative process? The client can often feel overwhelmed, but once we bring their expressions together in a cohesive and structured way, they feel confident in our creative ability to communicate their design. What is the next move for your firm? Soon, we will be completing several modern homes, opening the new Mountainside Fitness Center, and beginning homes in the prestigious Crown Canyon community, located in Paradise Valley and Scottsdale.
“Our foundation derives from trend-resistant design, so we work primarily in modern styles with an organic feel to the finish.”

hen you acquire a valuable art piece, would you use anybody to
transport it? You suddenly consider how essential handling and transport become to ensure its security. The quality of service should become an important factor in whom you hire.” It is with this statement that general manager Victoria Battles describes Rest Assured, the leading white-glove logistics firm for interior designers, private households and luxury companies in the Phoenix area. “Rest Assured receives, stores, ships and installs all high-end luxury goods, including designer furniture, fine art and unique items,” she says. “Our clients see us as their single point of contact to inspect, catalog and condition each item, ensuring we meet their high expectations. Designer Rebecca Salcito knew she wanted to tie together the two separate seating arrangements in the living room, so she opted for a custom Kyle Bunting hide rug that spans the entire space. In the formal area, a Fendi Casa sofa and a pair of A. Rudin armchairs are all swathed in Great Plains by Holly Hunt fabric.
B
uilder Anthony Salcito and designer Rebecca Salcito had the itch. After five years in their Scottsdale home, the couple was ready to build again. “We’ve lived in eight houses since we’ve been married, four of which we built from the ground up,” says Rebecca. “Anthony and I are exposed to the newest trends in design and construction on a daily basis, so it’s hard to see all these amazing new elements and not want to have them in our own home.” The couple, who worked with architect and longtime friend Erik Peterson and landscape designer Jeff Berghoff on the plan for their new modern Mediterranean domicile, wanted to remain in their Silverleaf community. They found a large lot that was perfect, except for one aspect—five neighboring houses stood very close to the property line, which presented a challenge when it came to creating the private oasis the Salcitos desired. “That was easily the biggest trick,” says Berghoff. “How do we make it feel like they’re the only ones in the backyard with neighbors so close?” Peterson understood exactly what the Salcitos wanted, due in no small part to their 16-year friendship. “We’ve worked on so many projects over the years,” says Anthony,

Rebecca and Anthony Salcito wanted their home’s architectural details and dramatic lighting, such as the Eva Menz chandelier, to take center stage in the home’s design. So, in lieu of a traditional railing, they worked with architect Erik Peterson to install glass paneling up the stairwell and European white-oak flooring to complement the modern look.

“probably close to 100. So we really do know each other inside and out.” Collaborating with the builder, Peterson devised an architectural plan geared toward ultimate privacy. He designed the home on an axis so that the pool house on the back of the lot lined up perfectly with the foyer, making it a stunning focal point upon entry; the cabana also became a significant barrier between the adjacent homes. “We put the cabana on the back of the axis and designed it in a substantial enough size that the entire backyard is private,” Peterson says. He blocked out the remainder of the neighboring houses with the two-story portion of the home. From there, Berghoff layered mature vegetation, using full greenery to screen even more. All of this culminated in what Anthony calls “a hybrid courtyard.”
LX_AZ55_HOM_Salcito_12.indd 243
For the interiors, the couple brought in some beloved antiques from their former residence, and Rebecca blended them with the newest materials and finishes she’d discovered. “It’s amazing how, when you’re a designer, your tastes evolve because you’re constantly seeing new everything,” she says. “I feel like this house really reflects that.” The formal living room is a true example: A set of antique chairs and a 19th-century French mirror anchor half of the expansive room, which is separated into two seating arrangements grounded by one continuous rug to keep the space from being overwhelming. Modern lines on the other furnishings within both sections and modern art lend it a contemporary feel.
During construction, the team moved Rebecca’s office to the back of the house so that it overlooks the courtyard and pool. The walls were painted a dramatic black lacquer, after which a Ryan Jackson Home desk was layered in along with contemporary artwork by artist Carolyn Reynolds, which hangs above a silk velvet Ferrell Mittman sofa.

Breathtaking light fixtures by U.K. designer Eva Menz are scattered throughout, including the stunning pendant lighting in the kitchen and chandelier over the dining table. In lieu of traditional white marble, Rebecca chose Arabescato Carrara marble with bold veins in grays, charcoal and even purple to complement the white lacquered cabinetry and white oak flooring. “The kitchen was inspired by these beautiful European apartments I’d seen,” she says. The space opens to the dining area, which, like the rest of the home, has touches of formality, but with a contemporary approach. “We’re casual with the way we live,” says Rebecca. “Because we have an outside dining area, we eliminated the dining room. This may look like a formal
LX_AZ55_HOM_Salcito_12.indd 245
dining room, but it’s our multipurpose table where we have breakfast and dinner.” The dark and dramatic master bedroom, inspired by a rich navy blue silk wallcovering, is a complete departure from the light and bright master in their previous residence. “My last bedroom was pure white and with tons of light filtering through it, so I wanted something totally different,” says Rebecca. The bold black marble fireplace is, she notes, “so classic and timeless. It looked so perfect with the denim blue palette.” While the Salcitos believe they’ll eventually have the urge to build again, it won’t be in the near future. “We built this house to stay in for a very long time,” says Rebecca. “I don’t see us moving anytime soon.”
Initially, Rebecca didn’t want anything too bold for the kitchen, but once she saw the Arabescato Carrara marble from The Stone Collection, she was smitten. Its dramatic veining complements the sleek white lacquered custom cabinetry by Downsview Kitchens and Amy Howard counter stools.

To create a cozy atmosphere in the large living room, interior designer Holly Wright devised several sitting areas. This one features a Gamma sectional punctuated by custom walnut end tables, both from Feathers Fine Custom Furnishings. The silk and wool David Adler rug brings extra softness, while Alexander Sinclair stools add a punch of color.
A
monster blizzard on Halloween in 1991 was enough to convince a Minnesota couple to relocate to Arizona. When the lure of warm weather and desert scenery hadn’t worn off 25 years later, the husband and wife decided to build their “forever home” in Scottsdale. They envisioned a house that was true to the surroundings they had grown to love: dramatic desert contemporary with echoes of Frank Lloyd Wright. But the husband had one particular request regarding the location. “I retired about three years ago and I was driving up to hike Pinnacle Peak almost five times a week, which used to be about 17 miles from our house,” he explains. “So I asked my wife if we could move closer to it.” He got his wish: Not only is his hiking commute now an easy five minutes, but they also enjoy spectacular views of Pinnacle Peak, Troon and Camelback Mountains, along with the city skyline. The couple entrusted architect Erik Peterson and interior designer Holly Wright, along with builder Stephanie Fox, to bring their dream to life. Taking both the desired Frank Lloyd Wright influence and the lot itself into consideration, Peterson opted for an angular geometry that made a dramatic impact and allowed for expansive views. “The sloping of the lot was perfect, because it slants toward the southwest,” says Peterson. “That’s the best view orientation for sun and the city lights.”

The angles made the layout of the house somewhat unusual. In the great room, rather than have the living, family and dining rooms and kitchen flow together in one linear rectangle, the spaces intersect with one another. “It’s a bit more dynamic,” Peterson observes. “Together with the wonderful furniture layout that Holly came up with, there’s an intimacy within those volumes. She brought everything together.” The geometry isn’t the only architectural aspect Wright carefully considered. “There was a lot of use of stone, darker materials and warm color palettes,” she says of Peterson’s design. “I wanted to make sure that we were just enlightening on those pieces and adding to it.” Wright chose a similar, warm color palette for the interiors, using earthy materials such as clay, stone and porcelain, and variations of natural taupe, gray and

beige. For balance, she kept the floors and ceilings in lighter tones, which accentuate the sunlight pouring in from the generous windows. Wright worked with the clients to find creative ways to showcase objects they had collected over the years from their prolific travels. “I wanted to highlight those things and celebrate them,” she says. For the great room, for example, she commissioned an aqua-and-gold-toned pleated silk work from India to cover the television via mechanical arm when it’s not in use. “It really reads as a piece of artwork,” she says. For the smaller objects and fine collectibles from abroad, she devised a series of shelving and storage to allow for regular rotation of the different pieces on display. In the gallery hallway, Wright collaborated with lighting designer Stephanie Croft on a system to

complement the couple’s art collection. They used LED strips on the wall and ceiling so that the works themselves appear to light up the hall. While the couple’s level of sophistication and passion for culture is on fine display, the designer didn’t forget that they also enjoy simple, casual home entertainment. “I thought it would be fun to have a ping-pong table because everyone can play it at some level,” the husband says. And the fun doesn’t stop there. The family room also features a golf simulator and bridge table, which, along with the ping-pong table, can be moved to create space for guests. The kitchen also celebrates the couple’s passion for entertaining. After years of hosting dinner parties, they
LX_AZ55_HOM_Wright_10.indd 259
knew one thing to be true: People always congregate in the kitchen. So this one allows for up to 10 people to be seated around the island while still leaving plenty of room for meal prep and cooking. Overhead, a striking custom chandelier adds a touch of drama—and nostalgia. “It reminds us of stars, or snowflakes from Minnesota,” the husband says. Having lived for years in a home with very little natural light, the wife says she still can’t help but be captivated by the views from their new home. “I walk by windows on all sides of the house and just go, ‘Wow.’ ” she says. “We never put the shades down in the bedroom because we see the lights of the city twinkling—and we go to bed smiling.”
Because the back patio is symmetrical, Wright tried to support that concept in the furniture. The curvilinear Seasonal Living sectionals soften the space and provide different vantage points from which to enjoy the spectacular views. The clients sourced the stone for the slab coffee table from the Taj Mahal in India.

Inside awaits an ode to the faces and bodies that have defined art across millennia, from a circa 1550 B.C. Egyptian bronze deity to 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints. The space is the vision of founder and artist Agnese Udinotti, who has dedicated her creative life to exploring the enduring resonance of the human figure, from her curatorial work to her expansive career in painting and sculpture. “We are the human form. That’s who we are—with a heart, with pain and with sensitivities,” Udinotti explains. “To explore all the information that you have as a human being, the human form is the most complete subject to depict.” Growing up in Greece, Udinotti was exposed early on to classical figurative works. This fascination sharpened when she moved to Berlin in the 1950s and encountered the city’s art community. Then a science student, she served as a sketch model for studio classes. “Up until

then I appreciated art mainly through museum exhibitions,” Udinotti recalls. “Here, I saw the process.” Her path quickly diverged once she moved to the other side of the easel. “That feeling of putting paint on canvas was incredible.” This led her to Arizona in 1958, where she studied fine arts and art history at Arizona State University. The state became her playground, where she explored facets of the human body across mediums such as painting, ceramics, sculpture and even jewelry. In 1964, she opened the Udinotti Gallery in Scottsdale as a showcase for contemporary figurative artists. “The public looked at abstraction as if that were the most modern aesthetic experience,” she says. “So I wanted to create a gallery that would accommodate figurative works as a way of expression.” Her own approach to the art form has evolved over the decades. Currently focused on painting, Udinotti is less interested in carefully drafting the mechanics of the body. “I don’t apply paint on the
canvas to form a figure,” she explains. “I can look at a white canvas and the images are already there. My responsibility is to bring it to the surface.” This slow revelation develops through layers of oils, “which give that translucency and richness I want.” She adds and wipes away color until something emerges. “Sometimes I just cover everything, and then start digging to find where the image is,” she says. In recent years, Udinotti has favored strong reds and yellows, with streaks of gold, “but they have been dirtied,” says the artist. “They are almost like memories of color.” For her latest series, “Reality and Myth,” the artists delves deep into monochromatics, with raw amber as the foundation. No matter what the colors or interpretation, for Udinotti, the pursuit remains the same. Like the historic works that have survived generations, contemporary figurative art aims at universality. “It’s immaterial when it was painted or sculpted,” she says. “It should feel valid and valuable, for any period of time.

In a nod to the local farmhouse style of Arcadia, architect Milos Minic and general contractor Austin King used wood shake on the roof but kept it modern with a metal seam. The windows from Sierra Pacific along the roofline allow the sun to stream into the great room.

n the design world, there’s nothing better than clients knowing what they want—provided, of course, that those clients have a keen eye for design. Luckily, that was the case with architect Milos Minic and general contractor Austin King’s clients, Katie and Brian Stoll. “I remember Katie brought in a rough sketch of her thoughts on how the floor plan might lay out for the spaces they wanted,” recalls Minic of his first meeting with the couple. “The sketch became the driver of the design concept.” The Stolls wanted what King, who also built their previous residence, sums up as a “modern farmhouse.” The neighborhood of Arcadia, where they built, is flush

with farmhouse-style homes, so taking that direction meant there were no worries that it would stick out like a sore thumb. They wanted it to be eye-catching, but in a good way. “We were trying to achieve clean, crisp, modern lines, but still really fit the context of Arcadia,” says King. To that end, Minic’s design nods simultaneously to the past (a shake roof, the use of dormers and white exterior brick) and the present (vertical siding, metal accents), infusing the house with character. “The wood shake roof grounds the home in tradition while the standing-seam metal roof accents suggest a streamlined, modern look,” notes the architect. “And the white surfaces provide a

pure, clean backdrop for the natural wood accents.” Adds King, “It feels fresh for the neighborhood. It’s slightly progressive, but it doesn’t stand out because it’s gone too far. It stands out for the right reasons.” For the interiors, Katie, who oversaw the furnishings, knew she wanted an open concept and something with a coastal sensibility, including lots of natural wood and rattan. “We definitely wanted it to feel like a home for entertaining,” she says. A great room where everyone could converge and easy indoor-outdoor flow were also key. Consisting of the kitchen, dining and family areas, that great room is encompassed by a soaring cupola lined with windows at the top. “It floods the space with natural light,” says King. “Certain times of the year, when the sun hits those windows just right, it almost illuminates from the interior and the cupola

glows. It’s absolutely beautiful.” Katie decided to run two parallel rows of rattan pendant lights along the entire length of the great room, rather than just over the kitchen island, bringing the entire space together. “That sets the tone,” says Katie. “They gave it that beachy vibe that I wanted. Then I added in a lot of whites, grays, muted blues and greens to keep it kind of warm, but not too traditional.” To continue the contemporary-classic vibe, the team designed a funky metal hood for the kitchen and hung open wooden shelves on either side. And in the adjoining breakfast nook, rattan and natural light once again play a starring role. “We’ve never had a true breakfast nook,” says Katie. “I just wanted that to feel comfortable and pretty. I kept it very white and very bright, and added in some rattan chairs and pillows.”

Comfort, in fact, is the overriding theme throughout. Even in rooms that would traditionally be used in a more formal way, such as the front living room, relaxation rules. With its muted gray and blue furnishings, crisp white walls and white-oak floors, the room maintains the casual vibe that permeates the home. “It’s a family space,” says Katie. “It’s modern but yet it’s still a place for everyone to sit in and watch movies together.” And true to Katie’s original goal of easy indoor-outdoor flow, the outside is another family draw. Landscape designers Jeremy McVicars and Ryan Sawdey created multiple outdoor areas catering to whatever mood people may be in. “Acting as the backyard centerpiece, the pool

and its surrounding patio allow for the ultimate alfresco living experience,” notes Sawdey, who lined the perimeters of the area with Dwarf Ollie and Iceberg roses. A side courtyard was conceived to be what Katie calls “a secret garden,” complete with a fireplace and a carved-stone water feature. Reclaimed Chicago brick maintains the traditional element underfoot. “Reclaimed materials mixed with antique garden elements provide the detailing needed to give this home its timeless character,” observes Sawdey. And timeless it is, with a design that allows the entire family to relax, swim and just enjoy each other for many years to come. “This is why we built the house,” Katie says, “to have those moments.”
In the kitchen, the custom hood, fabricated by Tin Works, Inc., above the Wolf range feels funky and modern, as do brass elements such as the Waterworks faucet above the Kohler farmhouse sink.

The breakfast nook is one of Katie’s favorite rooms. A built-in banquette and McGee & Co. chairs around a Lulu and Georgia table, along with a stunning mountain view, make it the perfect place to enjoy a casual meal.
