Neolith® is an architectural skin capable of dressing up any interior or exterior commercial or residential space where it’s applied from floors and walls to kitchen countertops, facades and even furniture. The large format minimizes the number of joints in cladding for decorative and hygiene benefits. The minimal thickness allows it to be directly applied to an already existing surface without the need for prior removal.
It’s a low-maintenance material given its special resistance to scratches, stains, chemicals, high temperatures and traffic. Neolith® also provides the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality given its unlimited possibilities and capacity to resemble all-natural materials like stone, wood and metal. RADAR / IN CONVERSATION
Something BORROWED ARCHITECT NINA EDWARDS ANKER SWIFTLY ADVANCES THE CONVERSATION ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
Leave it to Nina Edwards Anker to design a residence that personifies sustainability. The New York-based architect received her doctorate from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design leading to her acclaimed Southampton project, Cocoon House. Here, Anker opens the doors to her Gold LEED-certified home and forward-thinking approach to the built environment. What was your biggest takeaway from studying in Norway? The minimalist aesthetic really resonates with me. Norwegian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn made structures nestled into the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the little homes set against the vast water and snowscapes. That shaped my attitude as to how architecture relates to nature. Let’s talk about the Cocoon House and its unusual curved shape! I was inspired by a yurt in Vermont. I’m interested in how we can use scientific technologies to do what our ancestors did. One of my favorite times of year in the house is a sunny winter day, sitting in a T-shirt in the living room with no heat on and it’s still so warm. These ancient typologies worked for a reason. Your perspective focuses on affect before effect. The starting point is you have a family member with a health issue—in this case, my son has asthma—and you address that before anything else, so the house is a purely timber ‘breathable’ structure. It’s better for breathability and for the climate in terms of CO2 release. So health and sustainability go hand-in-hand? How we address our spaces in terms of well-being and the environment should be in sync. The orientation of the site, breezes, sunlight, lack of clutter—that’s all wellness. Share another example of a well-designed LEEDcertified building. I love the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. It’s a gateway between the urban and natural landscape. Just because it’s sustainable, doesn’t mean it needs to be overly technical or intimidating. What's next? My book on the Cocoon House launches in August. I’m also working on the Flora and Fauna Extinction Project, making furnishings inspired by plants going extinct in the natural world.
LX_COM31_Radar_InConversation.indd 96
In the hallway of the Cocoon House, translucent colored skylights are designed to enhance the experience in each space. Colors range from vermilion red, signaling sunset and rest, above the master bedroom, to deep yellow, indicating zenith and activity, near the living room.

Paradise FOUND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED RESTORATION, THE SAN YSIDRO RANCH OPENS THE LAST OF ITS DOORS. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TONDRO
The silver lining to nature’s wrath is that it tends to bring out the strength and ingenuity in people— and such was the case when mudslides struck the San Ysidro Ranch in 2018. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, much of the beloved resort was buried under mud when a deluge following the Thomas Fire sent rivers of topsoil down the mountains. For owner Ty Warner and the architects at Appleton Partners—who had collaborated on its historical restoration years prior—the mission was clear. First, revive the property to even greater splendor. Second, protect it for future generations by working in tandem with the topography. “We kind of rebuilt from an earthworks point of view,” explains Ken Mineau, principal and project architect. This translated to using the enormous sandstone boulders that had tumbled down the mountain to buttress the banks of the San Ysidro Creek and the foundations of its abutting cottages—a few of which were rotated away from the water. In an imperative investment, a debris basin above the ranch was enlarged to catch future fall, and 400 mature olive and oak trees were planted to restabilize the terrain. With the landscape reborn, a crew of roughly 250 subcontractors descended each day for a year and a half, intent on reestablishing the same architectural flavor to the damaged buildings. Materials catalogued during their first renovation, such as antique oak floors and limestone slabs, were installed anew as an assembly line of tradesmen worked their way up the creek. “It was a Herculean effort, but it’s back to what it was and that’s a beautiful thing,” Mineau says. “Every rock, every tree, every roof is back in place.” Save for one exception: The boulder that came six inches shy of wiping out the 1825 Old Adobe. That stone will remain alongside the historic landmark, defiant. This season, bringing the revival full circle, the last four creekside cottages reopen, beckoning guests with bird song and a piece of history embalmed with great care. “It’s a healing moment,” notes Mineau. “This particular story is just one of many past and many chapters to come.”

Verdant gardens, groves of olive and citrus trees, and an array of California vernacular guest bungalows distinguish the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Appleton Partners worked to restore and preserve its singular sense of place following mudslides exacerbated by the Thomas Fire.

A NEW WAVE OF CUSTOM HOMES ADDRESSES AN INCREASED APPETITE FOR NATURE-FIRST DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN LEAK
The words “development” and “sustainability” don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a growing number of architects and developers are working to change that perception, and are doing it in a way that connects luxury homebuyers with nature. “The smart use of natural resources in architecture is the key to a better future,” says David Lang, principal at Lang Architecture, who recently designed a lakefront community in Taylor, Mississippi, with this approach in mind. “For buyers, it’s an investment in preserving and protecting the landscape, which furthers a sense of ownership.” At Splinter Creek, the setting takes center stage. Homes on the 650-acre property “minimize human intervention into nature, while maximizing the effects on habitants,” says Lang. Each home—in addition to being crafted with sustainable materials and passive solar techniques—is designed to seem as one with the bucolic landscape. Inspired by nearby barns, Lang composed the handsome, modern structures with materials such as cypress timbers and galvanized metal. “The locally sourced wood will gray as it weathers,” says Lang. “And when it does, it will blend in with the environment.” But that’s not to say “blending” the dwellings means nestling them into the ground. On the contrary, homes sit, at least partly, on stilts and piers. Not only does this give them the appearance of hovering, it minimizes the touch of man on the earth. “It also allows for a great water view,” adds Lang. Experiencing the water and nature is also by design. Large window walls are oriented to the lakes and the volumes are broken up into separate buildings—sometimes connected by a traditional dogtrot, or open-air passage—allowing residents to experience their surroundings as they move through the day. The architect calls the luxurious homes meticulously detailed and refined, but they’re not opulent mansions—most designs clock in at roughly 2,000 square feet. “Although they are generous, especially in the public spaces, they are smaller houses created that way intentionally, so they don’t overwhelm the landscape,” says Lang. “To us, a strong connection with nature and simplicity are the ultimate luxuries.”
LX_COM31_Radar_Buzz.indd 100
Each home at Splinter Creek sits upon 2 to 18 private acres, offering buyers seclusion and an immersion with the raw natural surroundings— the latter of which architecture principal David Lang describes as “a necessity for well-being.”

“I tend to favor color in my interior design work, but my go-to favorite neutral is Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore. It’s crisp and clean.”
“Pratt & Lambert Timidity is my No. 1 choice. My entire New York City apartment is painted in it, including the ceilings. It’s an elusive and beautiful khaki shade.”
“Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball is a true white with just enough warmth. I used it for my design studio and shop. I love that it feels bright, but not too stark.”

–THOMAS O’BRIEN
–SARAH BARTHOLOMEW
“For as long as I can remember, Benjamin Moore White Dove has been a mainstay for designers. It is a classic, soft hue that goes with everything, and we use it constantly for trim and cabinetry.”
“Even when using a base color, it’s important to define the story and point of view. I gravitate toward gray and creamy tones, like Dover White by Sherwin-Williams, to better support surrounding layers of color.”
“Farrow & Ball Pointing is perfect for living spaces. It’s the loveliest soft white that doesn’t read too austere or brilliant. It works well in modern and traditional applications as well as for trim!”

POSADA BY THE JOSHUA TREE HOUSE Set on 38 acres near Saguaro National Park West, the five-suite inn Posada by The Joshua Tree House is a dream come true for owners Sara and Rich Combs. The Tucson property underwent a year of transformation to achieve an aesthetic not unlike that of the original Joshua Tree House in California. New tile was selected to blend in with the original architecture, a pool was made to look like a natural swimming hole and suites where guests can experience the majesty of the landscape without roughing it. Soon, Posada will launch additional features, such as canvas tents for glamping. thejoshuatreehouse.com/tucson
DESIGN DUO For Brendan and Jillian Bader, success is something that is best shared, both with each other and the community. The couple has turned recession-driven remodeling work into a thriving home-building and design company in Scottsdale known as Modern Nest. Each project is an ode to the passions of the Baders—Brendan holds a degree in construction management while Jillian has parlayed her modeling background into interior design—and the results are captivating. Homes are carefully crafted with custom millwork, uplifting color palettes and plenty of storage space. And Modern Nest routinely works with craftsmen and local businesses for projects, then promotes them, proving there is strength in working together. modernnesthomes.com

THE JAMES MCINTYRE COLLECTION The James McIntyre Collection owes its inspiration to several sources: the Art Deco period, which has enchanted Canadian-born interior designer McIntyre since he was a design student; contemporary design, with its streamlined aesthetic; and finally, the Sonoran Desert. “I love the minimalism of it,” he explains. The result is a collection of chairs, sofas, tables, beds and consoles in materials like solid walnut, bronze, leather, velvet, antique brass and quartzite. McIntyre and his design partner, Ronald Bills, are already dreaming up the next editions with an eye toward classic Hollywood and modernism. “If we’re going to do a collection, we have to stay true to our inspiration,” McIntyre contends. jamesmcintyreinteriordesign.com

LOCAL Color THE CHURCHILL
Part artistic marvel, part practical design, The Churchill reflects all the ways in which downtown Phoenix is a source of inspiration. It houses 10 local businesses that bring together food, art, retail and the community, ranging from wine shop Sauvage to the lifestyle brand Gather (pictured). At its covered, 9,000-square-foot courtyard, visitors can tuck into a good meal or attend a printing workshop, salsa dancing or “vinyl night.” Most noticeably, The Churchill was built from 19 disused shipping containers. The place, says co-owner Hartley Rodie, owes its wow factor to design firm Local Studio, which utilized the containers with original doors and wood floors still intact. Meanwhile, artist Pete Deise turned one 30-foot vertical component of the building into a striking work of art. Those looking for further inspiration after dining and shopping should not miss the alley behind The Churchill, which features 16 works by 14 local artists. “There are a lot of really special businesses that have paved the way and built the culture down here,” Rodie says. “We just want to do our part.” thechurchillphx.com
OPEN HOUSE In a nod to Arizona’s continued growth, Staging and Design Network (3055 E. Rose Garden Lane, #140) has expanded out of the Seattle area to debut its first Phoenix warehouse. The 25,000-square-foot space (below) opened in November and features, in the tradition of its Washington predecessors, an expansive selection of furniture and decor for rent or purchase. The inventory is managed by network members like Realtors and designers and stretches across aesthetics to offer something for everyone. Growth has also driven the recent move by The Floor Collection Flagship Showroom, which departed Scottsdale for Mesa (2628 W. Birchwood Circle). The new location of this to-the-trade company features 2,000 square feet of showroom space and a 6,000-square-foot warehouse, which translates to bigger inventory and speedier delivery for designers.
FIRST LOOK ARCADIA PUBLIC MARKET
With the sort of curb appeal that makes you want to pull off the road and move in, Arcadia Public Market in Phoenix delivers on the promise of its charming architecture. Step inside the sunlit boutique and you’re greeted with one-of-a-kind artwork, furnishings, and decorative pillows and rugs curated by designer and owner Kim Anderson. “The inventory constantly changes,” she notes. “New pieces arrive daily, and once they’re sold, they’re gone.” Anderson, who also owns Arcadia Design Group, stores still more goods in warehouses around town and enjoys a global network of vendors in order to furnish clients and shoppers with exactly what they’re looking for. “We have many interior designers who shop in our market for fun pairs of chairs or that special side table to finish off a seating area,” she says. “We’re always looking for decorative items that you won’t see anywhere else.” arcadiapublicmarket.com

THE GUIDE JULIA BUCKINGHAM
“People walk in and they gasp,” says interior designer Julia Buckingham of her home furnishings boutique, Modernique. The reason for such visceral responses lies in the mélange of color, textures and eras represented within. Here, you are as apt to find a midcentury sofa in tangerine as you are a gold pagoda serving tray—and it’s Buckingham’s practiced eye that makes it all work. The Chicago-born and -bred designer got her start in interior design after staging a handful of houses in Chicago’s North Shore. Her approach—mixing vintage pieces with a modern aesthetic—soon had her collaborating on product lines, authoring a book and expanding her Chicago firm. After purchasing a second home in the Valley eight years ago, it was time to scale back and return to what she loves most: design. Buckingham opened Modernique (top, left) in 2018 in the revitalized Uptown Plaza, where she also operates her design firm. She shared a few of her favorite Phoenix finds with Luxe. shopmodernique.com Camelback Antiques Why she loves it: “Camelback Antiques (top, right) is the most welcoming shop, where I find the best pieces for my home and my place— I almost hate to give away my secret spot. BEAUPORT, THE SLEEPER-MCCANN HOUSE, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The provenance of the Sleeper-McCann House reads like a rich design novel. Henry Davis Sleeper, one of America’s first professional interior designers, built his summer retreat along the New England shore in 1907. He filled its rooms with a masterful mix, ranging from hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper to salvaged kitchen doors from his mother’s family’s home. After his death, Helena Woolworth McCann, a fellow collector, purchased the residence and kept much of the design vignettes intact.

HOLLYHOCK HOUSE, LOS ANGELES
Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his first Los Angeles project—Hollyhock House. Named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the floral motif can be found throughout the home. Completed in 1921, it is an early example of Mayan Revival style. In 2015, the estate reopened after a $4.3 million restoration, and in 2019, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first modern architectural cultural site in the United States to earn the accolade.

MIAMI MOMENT VIZCAYA MUSEUM AND GARDENS, MIAMI
Just south of downtown Miami overlooking Biscayne Bay stands the otherworldly Vizcaya estate. Owner and businessman James Deering envisioned the 1920s property as a modern and subtropical interpretation of 18th-century Italian villas. Despite its historical inspiration, the waterfront estate was constructed with modern techniques and technology for the time. Inside, old and new influences merge, such as Baroque and Renaissance antiques paired with works by contemporary artists.

FINE GRAIN WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
Move over white. Brown is back—think upholstered textiles, painted living room walls and, specifically, kitchens and baths with rich wood elements. While some may flash back to the paneled kitchens of the 1970s, today’s modern interpretation offers warmth and honors the material’s rich hues and patterning. Certain woods, such as walnut, have a beautiful depth to them that can easily cross boundaries between contemporary and traditional design. As shown here, it really shines when paired with other textures and tones.

LUXURIOUS WOOD DETAILS DRESS UP THE HOME’S MOST FUNCTIONAL ROOMS.

Court Atkins Group Design Director Deborah Van Plew worked with Element Construction to create this natural wood-inspired Bluffton, South Carolina, kitchen. The walnut cabinetry is by Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry from Palmetto Cabinet Studio. Swaim stools pull up to the island across from a Wolf range, while the side countertops are in Fresh Concrete by Caesarstone.

PERFECT PLANKS
Deborah Van Plew, design director for Court Atkins Group, offers a different perspective on the coastal kitchen for a vacation home in Bluff ton, South Carolina. While still light and bright, the design nixed a traditional white color scheme in favor of beautiful walnut surfaces and dynamic stone accents. courtatkins.com
What elements did you start with? The owner loves green, so the Blue Tides marble appealed to her right off the bat. We started with this material using it on the waterfall island and the full-height backsplashes. From there, the walnut cabinetry offered a warm, organic factor providing just the right complement to the busy stone. The wood really enhances its beautiful green tones. The design is so seamless. There are a lot of intersecting lines here. Instead of hardware, we went for a clean, streamlined aesthetic, but that meant there was no wiggle room for elements to
be off by an inch or two; everything had to align perfectly. We also thought about scale. It was important to carry vertical surfaces like the wood cabinetry to the ceiling for everything to feel integrated and connected. Where are the appliances? The kitchen faces a large great room. I didn’t want anyone to feel as though they were constantly looking into a kitchen but rather just another living area, so we created a galley behind the range. That’s where we tucked all the things you really have to use on a daily basis, including several appliances.

HIGH STYLE
CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK In the nearly 30 years since Christopher Peacock founded his eponymous luxury cabinetry company, he’s seen kitchen trends come and go, but wellmade, straightforward designs will always stand the test of time. For one of his latest projects, the king of quality kitchens walks us through how he
approaches putting together the home’s hardestworking room. peacockhome.com Where do you begin when designing a kitchen? For me, I usually start the process before I’m even inside the space. It’s important to be aware of the detailing, materials and arrangement of the rest of the home so the kitchen design is both cohesive and a natural progression. A big mistake is thinking of this room in a vacuum. Walk us through your approach to the materials. The dramatic stone was the first thing I picked out. I considered it as a piece of art in guiding the rest of the scheme. For example,
the gray and blue cabinetry colors were pulled right from the veining. Walnut has been around for a long time but there’s something about this particular wood that I just love. It brings such depth to a design and can simultaneously feel both modern and traditional. How have kitchens evolved? Today, these rooms are not considered separate spaces. Instead, they often open up to living areas, particularly in cities and urbans developments. Because of this fluidity, I wanted the elements in this kitchen to read almost like furniture: The island, oven and wall cabinetry all become decorative pieces incorporating different materials and colors.

WOODEN WONDER
MARIE FLANIGAN
photos: julie soefer.
In a Houston home, designer Marie Flanigan renovated and reinvented the master bathroom to create a statement space with stunning architectural details. Since the original bath was very dark, the first step was to brighten the room and welcome in natural light. To avoid altering the envelope of the building, she implemented a solarium ceiling allowing sunlight to flood the area during the day through solar tubes on the roof. Additional lighting was also added for a soft glow at night. marieflanigan.com
For bathrooms, especially, Flanigan recommends addressing functionality from the very beginning to ensure space is utilized in the best possible way and appliances or fittings are positioned in areas that flow easily. Although the footprint of this room was not changed, so many more usable areas were added including the vanity, bathtub and kitchenette nook. After the technical, ‘macro’ aspects of the design are decided, Flanigan says she turns to micro details like color, texture and materials. Paneled marble walls create an elegant, subtle focal point and were designed to encase the mirrors and sconces. While green stone slabs were the first-round pick, Flanigan and the client eventually decided on honed Calacatta Bettogli, an elevated and refined option. Walnut elements and unlacquered brass finishes, including wood inserts on the Samuel Heath sink fittings, were also introduced to add warmth and comfort to the bathroom. “Natural tones will never go out of style,” says Flanigan.
This spectacular Houston bathroom, designed by Marie Flanigan alongside Kelsey Grant and Sydney Manning, features Ralph Lauren sconces from Visual Comfort & Co. and an Urban Electric pendant. A Palecek chair completes the vanity area.

Est Est, Inc. established in 1959, is the oldest of the interior design companies in Scottsdale, Arizona. The original owners, William Benner and Pat Maas, pioneered the path for interior design in Arizona. Est Est’s original design studio was located on Main Street in “Old Town” Scottsdale. In tandem with establishing Arizona’s place in design, the original owners worked on many notable projects, including the original design concept for the Phoenix Zoo with the Maytag family. Mr. Benner and Mr. Maas were very active in many local and national events of the times and even designed a Southwest Room for the 1965 New York World’s Fair. Tony Sutton began working for Pat and Bill in 1979, and purchased the company from them in 1984. In 1997 Mr. Sutton moved the Design studio to its current location in the Perimeter Center. As a leader in design innovation, Est Est continues the tradition of community involvement, exceptional design and unparalleled customer service. With 60-years of rich history and a notable past, Est Est has enjoyed distinguished recognition for their work on custom homes, club houses, and boutique hotels across multiple design styles. An eight-story townhouse offered Westport, Connecticut-based architect Roger Ferris a unique opportunity to design a statement staircase. Twelve feet in diameter and comprised of seamless white Corian cladding with white oak treads, the monumental structure was fabricated as a single piece off-site and in turn, lowered in through the roof. Notes Ferris, “It acts as a reinterpretation of a common feature that is well conceived and artfully executed.” ferrisarch.com

STRENGTH IN SIMPLICITY “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1400s, the mantra has rung true for centuries, echoed in all areas of art and culture, and perhaps none so much as architecture, a field distinguished by thoughtful restraint and fortitude. The next few pages showcase an array of timely architectural inspiration unified by clean lines, powerful function and understated wow-factor. To open the conversation, look no further than this sculptural staircase by architect Roger Ferris—a testament to the enduring dazzle of a less is more approach.

If the view to the courtyard is any indication, a stay in the premier guest room of architect Bobby McAlpine promises to be a singular experience. Located on the lower level of his Atlanta home, the dramatic chamber is flanked on either side by sunken gardens enjoyed via ocular pivoting sash windows fabricated by DQ Ironworks. Aiding in the luminous feel despite its subterranean siting, white plaster walls, ceilings and floors host furnishings of exaggerated scale, such as the 12-foot-long Niermann Weeks table topped with antique French urns. “It was most important to make this room one you’d never forget,” says McAlpine. mcalpinehouse.com

LIGHTNESS of BEING
In the hilltop San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Malcolm Davis Architecture set about pouring daylight into a historic townhome without sacrificing privacy. Rather than punching windows through its side walls, which would have yielded undesirable views, Davis imagined a long, slim skylight punctuated by the building’s freshly exposed wood framing. Notes the architect, “This is such a captivating element because it’s a moment where a modern insertion expresses the original ‘old bones’ of the house. The skylight creates a feeling of warmth and a connection to the outdoors where you wouldn’t expect it.” mdarch.net
Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell were working as architects in Los Angeles when a notion struck: Indoor/outdoor furniture options to their tastes were dispiritingly limited. The duo spent the next year learning to weld and soon after, LAUN, their kicky outdoor furniture line, was born. Shown here, the travertine and copper Chord Daybed—inspired by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels—highlights their dynamic point of view. “We approach furniture similarly to architecture,” says Purnell. “We analyze each piece in terms of materiality, color and texture, and then we synthesize those ideas with more logical form and function requirements.” launlosangeles.com

the space's softly sloping eaves, herringbone linen-clad walls and ceiling, and a fanlight window with views spanning 40 miles create an inspiring retreat for all ages. Pivotal MOMENT
For a home on Miami’s Venetian Islands, Strang principal Alexandra Mangimelli drew inspiration from the strong horizontal lines and deep overhangs of modernist architect Alfred Browning Parker, devising a structure she describes as both “rhythmic and purposeful.” To usher the home’s exterior strength into the sleek interiors, the architect opted for a custom black pivot door of imposing scale. Whether closed or open to 180 degrees, the immersive portal erases the divide between indoor and out, connecting the homeowners and their guests with the interior courtyard, sculptural cistern, and beyond, the waters of Biscayne Bay. strang.design
6 FANCY FRIEZE Plaster has transcended its traditional roots of late, lending gravitas to contemporary, even modern interiors. “We’ve seen a notable upswing of interest in sculptural relief, both figurative and abstract,” says Adrian Taylor, principal of Hyde Park Mouldings, the Long Island studio specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of artisanal plasterwork. “It seems people are realizing anew that the marriage of architecture and sculpture can yield sublime results,” he adds. This custom prototype—a simplified floral frieze for G.P. Schafer Architect—speaks to the medium’s fresh face for the new decade. hyde-park.com

Enamored with the brief, plans were drawn for a dramatic slate-toned sanctuary with dark herringbone floors. To the right of the entryway, a powder-coated steel spiral staircase fabricated by Northwest Stair & Rail, Inc. weaves to the upper level of the library, which hosts more shelves of books, a comfy, tucked-away reading nook, and a secret passageway to the master bedroom. stuartsilk.com

Prior to designer Mary Frances Young’s arrival, a Manhattan apartment’s crowning feature—namely, a plastered brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling—was shrouded by dark building materials and furnishings. Allowing the architectural envelope to take center stage, Young painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Paperwhite and paneled the floors in crisp white oak topped with a custom Amadi carpet, setting the stage for her airy take on the 19th-century parlor. “The building is a historical ice storage facility with wide hallways and big spaces. My hope was to happily mix the old building bones with new finishes and furniture,” Young notes. youngandfrances.com

Few wall treatments rival the grandeur of marble fluting, an architectural tradition passed down and reimagined for millenia. For a modern spin, consider Pinnacle, new from Artistic Tile, which trades classical fluting associations for CNC-cut triangular grooves— an intriguing contrast against the marbles’ natural veining. Available in three stones—Bianco Dolomiti, Nero (above, left) and Calacatta Gold (above, right) marble—the tiles can read bold and graphic or soft and textural, making them a dimensional addition to interiors of any flavor. artistictile.com

For the team at A Finer Touch Construction (AFT), delivering the best work within budget is at the forefront of every project. “We want to maximize our client’s investment,” president Brad Leavitt says. “Whether it’s technology, the use of unique materials or architectural design, AFT is a leader in using modern techniques and building science to deliver high-quality results.” When it comes to renovations, open floor plans have greatly influenced AFT’s approach, with yesteryear architecture giving way to large great rooms, kitchens and gathering spaces. “The most successful renovations are when we understand how the clients use their home,” Leavitt says. “Whether the location of appliances, sitting areas or indoor-outdoor living, function plays a central role.” With over 110 years of experience, A Finer Touch delivers with one goal: To build high-quality projects that exceed clients’ expectations.
AFT’S ONE REQUIREMENT Our biggest requirement is having our clients move out of the home during a renovation. This not only expedites the schedule, but also makes the experience much less stressful. It’s also exciting for them to visit and see all of the changes taking place. Our clients like us a lot more when they are not living in a construction zone.

A Finer Touch Construction is working with building science engineers to build homes that perform—meaning more energy-efficient, sustainable and less impactful on local resources. Through critical pre-construction design, advanced framing, mechanical engineering and building envelope specifications, AFT is creating homes that stand the test of time. Additionally, AFT utilizes technology to communicate with out-oftown clients through an owner portal. This allows the customer to receive constant updates about their project from anywhere around the world.

Large living spaces mean everything to A Finer Touch’s clients. “They love large gathering spaces and high ceilings,” Leavitt says. “It makes the home feel more open and inviting.” 3. This remodel included a complete rebuild of the entryway, opening up walls, deleting columns and adding trim. The staircase railing was the only original component to remain. MAREK ON… uxury. L Everyone has a different vision and expectations for what luxury looks and feels like. For some, the bigger the better. For others, luxury isn’t even about style; it’s about function and how they use the space. Staying stress-free. Having open and honest communication with all parties helps relieve stress during a renovation. Flexibility is important in the timeline and in the budget. Lastly, trusting the process and the design team leads to a beautiful outcome. Walls that wow. I’ve created different designs that include some type of wall or ceiling application, such as adding wainscot and millwork wall moldings, installing shiplap and wallpaper, and outsourcing hand-painted murals.

In Arizona, many of the region’s top-ranking renovation requests include the kitchen (the heart of the home), the master bathroom and storage, including mudrooms. “The big-picture goal is to design a house that fits families’ lives and everyday functions,” says Emily Marek, owner and principal designer of Emmy Couture Designs. In design and in business, going “all in” seems to be Marek’s way. Working at a home decor store in her early years, she went on to receive her degree in interior design and worked professionally as an interior and furniture designer for many years thereafter. “As I continued to perfect my craft, my passion for creating artful and comfortable environments blossomed,” she says. “This led me to take a leap of faith and go all in on Emmy Couture Designs.” Operating by her “design is in the details” philosophy, Marek points to project management as her firm’s strong point. “From start to finish, this means executing the renovation with perfection.”

When undergoing any renovation, Mark Benz, president of Mark Benz Custom Building & Remodeling encourages homeowners to move out. “Visiting your remodeling project is much less stressful than living in it,” he says. Given Arizona’s incredible weather, Benz says many renovation requests follow suit, bringing the outside in with pocketing exterior door systems and more. Expanding on this theme, Benz and his team open up interior spaces as well, moving or removing walls, vaulting ceilings and installing beams for dramatic effect. “Open concepts are still very popular, especially in the kitchen,” he says. “As the heart of the home, the kitchen easily extends to other areas of a home.” No matter the space, area or scope, the firm maintains a focus on creating edgy designs, while paying homage to the past.

In the world of landscaping, “renovations” can take on many different forms, but the same outcome applies. “It’s always about making our clients’ outdoor spaces look beautiful beyond their wildest dreams,” says Peggy De La Garza, co-founder of Trademark Landscape, along with husband Larry. “We want them to come home to a relaxing setting that makes them feel joyful and grateful for living in the desert Southwest.” Locally speaking, that typically means redoing outdated landscapes made up of materials and plants that are simply past their prime. Paving, such as flagstone, may no longer suit a contemporary look, or an outdoor fireplace, kitchen or ramada may need updating. To start, the De La Garzas delve into client preferences in regard to colors, styles, plants and elements. “I ask if they have seen any of our landscapes and what they liked best about them,” Peggy says. “This, along with pictures, gives me a sense of what they’re looking for and I can tailor their dream design from there.”

THE BIGGER, THE BETTER Believe it or not, smaller spaces are more challenging when it comes to landscaping. The less space you have to work with, the more creativity required to make it work. For a recent front courtyard renovation, we used fewer plants, installed a spacesaving wall fountain rather than a freestanding one, and added a single bench and a piece of art. Keeping things simple in a small space makes a big impact.
“ People recognize our work just walking by it. The day we finish a landscape, it looks like it has always been there.”

hen designers Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson began planning the interiors for a longtime client’s second home in Paradise Valley, they were confident they had a strong sense of the residents’ taste, which had always leaned toward elegant neutrals. “After 20 years,” says Drake, “we have a dialogue.” Occasionally, however, people surprise you—as their clients did when the designers brought them to stone yards in Phoenix during the planning stages. “They were attracted to very vibrant stones, much to my surprise,” Drake says. One grand slab of marble in particular, in shades of tangerine and green, was “extraordinarily dramatic” and ended up as the exquisitely high surround for the fireplace. It also became the departure point for the airy,

five-bedroom home that maximizes views of Camelback Mountain and desert environs. But the setting doesn’t just offer stunning vistas. The home, which was built on two adjacent lots situated on a corner, provided a “backyard that was lush enough to enjoy with their family,” says architect Vivian Ayala, who, with partner Mark Candelaria, did the architectural designs. Working with builder Rod Cullum, they created an open plan on the ground floor, taking advantage of the surroundings by installing sliding glass doors in the double-height great room that center on indoor-outdoor living. With the dramatic fireplace and wide-open design setting the stage, Drake and Anderson knew the rest of the finishes needed to rise to the occasion. “Part of this project, as in all of ours,” explains Drake, “is complexity of

materials. It’s innate in both Caleb and me to create things that are unique and unusual, and we do that through the use of surprising combinations.” Picking up on the palette of the 20-foot fireplace surround, the marble of the kitchen island features the same shades but in darker tones and a more concentrated pattern. The designers then added a striking mix of quartz, quartzite, Corian, enameled steel, lacquer and a leather-wrapped refrigerator door. Emerald green marble in the adjacent powder room ups the drama factor. Celadon porcelain pavers cover the main floor throughout, grounding the space with a fresh neutral. When it came to furnishings, Drake and Anderson listened to the residents’ request for the home to feel like an Arizona residence, one that reflected hot days and cool

nights. Says Drake, “They wanted sort of a Southwest color story, but I think one can be poetic with those directions. It can be derived from the palette, but in its own unique way.” They pulled in the colors of the regions: the vibrant red blossoms of the Indian paintbrush plant, the blue-greens of faded turquoise, and the fiery oranges of sunrises and sunsets. A large celadon silk-and-wool rug with orange accents anchors the soaring great room with “a beautiful tonality enhanced by the way the light picks up on the silk,” notes Drake, while a softly structured sectional in the same pastel hue delineates the living area from the kitchen and nearby dining area. A sculptural low table—a series of stacked shapes made by Stefan Bishop of Monterey pine, —recalls the organic sensibility of the rugged mountain as well as the stepping stones alongside the pool, part of the

landscape design by Jim Lucas. Orange accents—from throw pillows to the lively landscape triptych visible on the overlooking loft—inject energy through these main living areas, while the master suite is dressed in the quieter tones of sage, celery, mint and rust, and where textures range from silk to leather to onyx. When it came to art, the 20-year relationship yielded another advantage—Drake and Anderson have an innate understanding of the clients’ taste and curated a collection that they knew would work well with both their preferences and the design. On a wall in the dining area, illuminated by plentiful outdoor light from the sliding glass

doors, a commanding abstract painting by Dan Christensen features a circular shape echoed by the placement of a lit orb porcelain sculpture by Barnaby Barford at the center of the great room. That sense of surprise and visual interplay was an objective for Drake and Anderson at the outset, a kind of joy that the residents entrust in interior designers to bring to their space. To this day, the pair still sees fresh connections. “Caleb and I enjoy spaces that continue to delight the eye beyond the initial impression,” says Drake, “so while you’re in the space you continue to discover interesting juxtaposition between things.”

hen a home is designed primarily with architectural significance in mind, the interiors aren’t always conducive to everyday living. Such was the case with a Paradise Valley home originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright alumnus Paul Christian Yeager. The layout was a striking example of midcentury modern design, but it wasn’t exactly practical. “It was an oddly shaped space,” designer Melissa Morgan says. “The house is very angular, and it’s very much an architect’s house in that so many of the views are meant to be seen from the outside. It was very challenging to make livable spaces inside them for furniture.” To wrangle those angles for contemporary livability, Morgan teamed up with architect Susan Biegner, general contractor Brock Brunkhorst and project manager Nancy Brunkhorst. The solution, Biegner says, was lifting the drop ceilings and lowering the windows. “There were even some surprise angles underneath the drop,” Biegner says. “So it was more about removing some of the extra to let it be about those clean feelings and unusually shaped spaces.” It was a brilliant move architecturally, but that doesn’t mean it was easy. “The most challenging aspect of this remodel was the window replacement,” says Nancy. “They were embedded, so to speak, within the stone walls, and at unusual angles.” Notes Morgan, “It was really a matter of bringing the outside in.” So the design team worked to liberate the views, such as the one from a hallway to the bedroom wing. “If you peeked out the small windows, it had the most interesting view of a wash that ran off the mountain and under the home,” Brunkhorst says. “In order to enjoy the experience, we built a window seat into the hallway.” They also dropped the dining room windows to the floor so that it feels like the home extends to the pool and garden. “Sometimes just those simple moves make a real difference in how the house feels from the inside to the outside,” Biegner says.
“THERE’S NOT ONE ROOM THAT DOESN’T HAVE A JAW-DROPPING VIEW.” –MELISSA MORGAN
LX_AZ57_HOM_Morgan_10.indd 238
Having worked with the owner—who is based in San Antonio—several times before, Morgan knew his preferred aesthetic for the interiors: clean and modern. While the home was in desperate need of an update, Morgan and Biegner made sure to retain the essence of the midcentury modern home, keeping the original limestone and stucco. Replacing the floors with natural oak, Morgan incorporated as much negative space as possible to complement the maximized window space. The client relished the opportunity to build a design aesthetic from scratch and create a home that doubled as a stylish showpiece and complemented its stunning natural surroundings. Aside from a few items brought in from the owner’s other properties—a mixture of vintage midcentury and significant designer pieces—Morgan sourced all of the home’s furnishings to fit in with the contemporary, minimalist aesthetic. As with the interior architecture, the home’s angles presented a challenge when it came to certain aspects of the decor. Since the rooms weren’t rectangular, configuring the rugs and designing the lighting proved to be a matter of geometry. “The lines in this house are really beautiful,” Morgan says, “but they made us think about which fixture works and hangs correctly and is the right shape for that room while also being functional. The space needs to be lit.” Morgan used blocks of deep color throughout—from the emerald green tile in the guest bathroom to the bold blue and yellow furnishings in the living area—to create a “wow” factor in every space. But she was sure to incorporate soothing neutrals for a fresh, contemporary look. “I think something looks a lot more modern without a pattern, so a lot of the furnishings can be neutral, but then saturated bright colors give it more impact,” Morgan explains. “A little goes a long way. The client wanted it really simple, and that feels simple.” There is one exception to this concept of simplicity in the powder room, where a wallpaper reminiscent of Japanese artist Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa brings the room to life alongside an eye-catching marble vanity. “Even though waves don’t have much to do with Phoenix, it was the color that was very powerful with the beautiful marble,” Morgan says. “It really let that wallpaper shine, and it’s so unexpected in that space.” Each carefully considered room has one thing in common—the dazzling sight lines. “When you’re sitting in the house, there’s not one room that doesn’t have a jawdropping view,” Morgan says. “So you can enjoy the outside even when it’s super hot and you’re inside. You just feel really connected with the beautiful architecture.”
3/23/20 2:05 PM
The most significant change architect Susan Biegner made to this Paradise Valley home was adding more windows to capitalize on the views. For the window seat in the hallway leading to the bedroom wing, designer Melissa Morgan installed a custom window bench with cushion and pillows in Holland & Sherry fabric. The pair of Anatolian Turkish rugs is from David E. Adler Fine Rugs.

Though Morgan tried to incorporate as much negative space as possible, she also added in energetic splashes of color. In the living room, sculptural furnishings— including vintage swivel club chairs upholstered in Pierre Frey fabric and an Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair— accentuate the modern architecture.

“YOU GET LOST IN THE MOMENT. LIFE GETS HECTIC AND THINGS HAPPEN, BUT WHEN YOU’RE IN THAT SPACE, THINGS KIND OF GO AWAY.”
P
ainter Damian Gomes collects impressions, be they from natural surroundings, the patina on the side of a building, or even the worn-out paint on an old jalopy. Over the years the Phoenixbased artist has filled multitudes of notebooks with thoughts, sample color palettes and sketches. It’s these ideas that Gomes references when confronted with a blank canvas. “You just have to look around,” he says. “Once you do, you start seeing paintings everywhere.” But Gomes’ work is hardly a direct translation from his notebooks. While he occasionally has a vision in mind from the outset, it often morphs into something else as he works. In a very real sense, Gomes explains, he’s allowing the canvas to tell him what it needs. “You get lost in the moment,” he says. “Life gets hectic and things happen, but when you’re in that space, things kind of go away.” His figures in oil and acrylic include animals and people, often with a supernatural bent; for example, a haunting series of angels and demons. But while his works have been described by some as dark or even macabre, he rejects that characterization, pointing to the playful spirit they embody and the vivid color palettes he uses. Although he finds peace working on a canvas, Gomes thrives on a measure of chaos in his studio, where pictures and notes are strewn about the floor and numerous pieces remain in various stages of completion. Accompanied by music—usually classical music or 1920s ragtime jazz—Gomes works frantically, using brushes or even his fingers to convey the emotions he’s feeling. “I try
LX_AZ57_SM_Gomes_4.indd 249
to put the energy I’m feeling into the painting, so hopefully people will feel that way when they see it,” he says. For someone who emotes such deep passion for his art, it’s almost shocking that the self-trained painter hasn’t pursued it all his life. In fact, Gomes didn’t consider a career in fine art until he was in his 30s. After stints as a carpenter, a welder at a foundry and, most recently, a hairdresser, the notion of painting struck him virtually out of the blue. It seems like an odd career turn, but Gomes found near-immediate success. After building his own wood-framed canvases, he started painting and soon secured a spot in a group show in the lobby of a luxury downtown apartment building. The turnout exceeded expectations, and Gomes sold nearly every piece. Only a few years later, he turned in his comb and scissors for good. “I decided to go all in and I’ve never looked back,” he says. It seems he made the right choice. “There’s no better place for me than in front of the canvas,” Gomes says. “This is my calling in life.”
Artist Damian Gomes (above) made a series of career changes before becoming a painter. His supernatural-esque paintings, such as Some Kind of Angel (opposite, left) and Fight for Your Life (opposite, right), are at once moody and playful.

fter two decades of creating dream homes for her clients, Chicago-based interior designer Stephanie Wohlner decided to finally devote some time to making her own dream home—a second house in Arizona where her husband, children and especially her beloved new granddaughter (“I can’t be away from her for more than a few weeks,” says the proud grandmother) could congregate for extended periods of time. Wohlner and her husband, Rick, set their sights on Scottsdale some years ago (Wohlner graduated from the University of Tucson and has always made frequent trips to Arizona for family visits), but it took quite a while to find just the right spot. “We looked for almost two years in Paradise Valley, but we couldn’t find anything to renovate or a lot
LX_AZ57_HOM_Wohlner_14.indd 252
I loved enough to do a tear-down,” she says. “We didn’t envision ourselves on a golf course, but this lot, this view, peace, quiet, beauty—it’s an escape.” Wohlner wanted “every inch of the house to be looked at” and immersed herself in thoughts of all the possibilities—but she also knew she had to edit herself. That editing began, first and foremost, with the architecture. So Wohlner turned to Yevgeniy Veller, a longtime designer friend and collaborator, to help her refine her vision. She wanted a large home with room to spread out, as well as a casita where her adult children could have their own space. In order to keep the walk between rooms from being too long, she devised a courtyard-focused house that feels intimate and “wraps its arms around you.”

The runner was a local find at Azadi Fine Rugs and the art is by Dutch fine-art photographer Irene Wijnmaalen. A custom ottoman in Pierre Frey anchors the other end of the great room, where the designer placed A. Rudin sofas and Formations side tables. A trip to Paris brought about the discovery of the mirror and pineapple lamps.
To realize her ideas, Wohlner gathered architect Erik Peterson, general contractor Anthony Salcito Jr. and landscape architect Jeff Berghoff. “Stephanie wanted a really classic style of architecture—a little bit Mediterranean or oldworld—but cleaner, especially since her interiors were going more modern in pattern and texture,” explains Peterson, who understood Wohlner’s vision and worked with project architects Jeannine Engh and Davina Griffis to meet it. “Stephanie brought a whole new vision and a very different energy,” observes Peterson. “The house feels fresh and exciting—it’s a vernacular we haven’t seen,” he explains. Adds Salcito, who, like Peterson, is excited about the shift from overly embellished to more restrained desert styles, “Her taste is refined and elegant. They wanted a solid, authentic house and for it to be masonry, which makes it unique here.” Wohlner laughingly confesses that she was the toughest client she’s ever had. But she also says she loosened up once the building was done and she could turn her attention to the interiors. “Even though I wanted the architecture to be clean, I couldn’t not go crazy with fabrics and wallpapers,” she admits, pointing to the great room, where she hung wallpaper between the ceiling beams to cancel any echo while upping the cozy factor.

3/23/20 1:48 PM
And though she went full-bore on tile, choosing a bold pattern for the eat-in kitchen (“I ordered what I wanted on this job, and I don’t regret any of it!” she pronounces), she also kept herself in check by incorporating a soothing palette that continues from the main living spaces to the couple’s master suite (which is a resort unto itself, boasting its own petit kitchen and gym). “I didn’t want your eye to feel like it’s jumping around,” Wohlner says, “so every single room is the same neutral color to ground the space.” It was important for every area of the home to be an “interesting space,” and that includes the glazed walkways that display the couple’s art collection. “The beautiful, big hallways are like galleries,” says Peterson. “Most people wouldn’t give them that much square footage, but it creates a flow through the house.”
It also creates an immediate connection with the landscape, part of what brought Wohlner and Rick here in the first place. Around the home, Berghoff subtly transitioned natural desert plantings to more formal ones near the entrance; the grassy interior courtyard features a pool and a lush variety of annuals, lavender and roses (a nod to the designer’s award-winning Chicago garden). “This home is stripped down and tailored, and the garden reflects that,” notes Berghoff, “but there’s movement and a sense of discovery.” “It was an epiphany,” Wohlner reflects, realizing her design included elements of every project she’s ever done. “All the jobs connected—historic, modern, cottage— and the pieces just worked together.” After decades of helping others find their style, she’s now done it for herself. “I’ve identified who I am,” she says contentedly.
Along the kitchen island, Wohlner placed Baker stools; Paul Ferrante pendant lights are suspended above. Chicago-area firms nuHaus did the millwork and Exclusive Woodworking made the restaurant-style doors.

INTEGRATED DESIGN Most architects find inspiration all around … and in many forms. Milos Minic is no exception. “As architects, we learn to see, analyze and translate for our specific needs,” he says. “Traveling has been a great resource. I maintained a sketchbook while living and studying abroad in Florence, Italy. As part of the program, we traveled throughout Italy studying Renaissance architecture, which shaped an understanding of architecture and placemaking that has stayed with me to this day.” Once a project architect for a local architectural firm that specialized in custom luxury residential architecture, Minic sought autonomy and a freedom of expression that only comes with branching out on one’s own. Founding Integrated Design in 2011, he quickly made a name for himself in the City of Phoenix, providing design interventions that made an immediate impact on homes’ values. “It was design at its essence,” Minic says. “Our homes were selling within days of being listed. The exterior curb appeal and floor plans set our designs apart. This not only put our firm on the map but helped streamline our design process.” Central to this process are his clients, who “stay involved from onset to completion through a collaborative effort of dialogue, immersive design experiences and technology that bring the architecture to life,” he says.

We work in all different types of communities in the Central Phoenix Corridor, Arcadia to the complex hillside lots of Paradise Valley and Scottsdale, to Silverleaf Upper Canyon. Arcadia, with its bucolic history and strong sense of community with ranch-style homes on lush, manicured lots, differs completely from the design guidelines in Silverleaf and strict hillside constraints imposed by the Town of Paradise.

How does your local design culture influence your work? Arizona is an incredibly unique and gorgeous environment to design for, so I like to use local materials, such as copper, stone and darker color palettes that honor the very site the project sits on. The Arizona high desert is unique for its harsh sunlight, requiring deep overhangs to protect the windows. Each residence needs to react to its characteristics like site, culture, location and environmental challenges, so I consider all of those aspects when creating someone’s dream home.

Closer to home, the president of JK Companies finds inspiration in the local culture of Scottsdale, pushing the limits of design and his own creative boundaries to deliver innovative, cutting-edge projects. Growing up, Kilbane worked as an intern for his architect father with no intention of going into the business himself. “When I started college, I took an ‘Intro to Architecture’ class for an easy A, since I had grown up in the industry. I did really well and ended up staying with it through school.” A decision that paid off, as Kilbane moved on to launch three architectural, building and development companies under the JK Companies umbrella—JK Homes & Land, JK Construction & Development and JK Architect. Together, JK Companies specializes in luxury custom homes with Kilbane’s passion and dedication at the helm of the company’s success. When asked for three design rules he lives by, Kilbane offers these: First, start with a site plan and floor plan; second, always try for odd numbers for elevation items; and third, bedroom and bathroom functions must be perfect.

AK STUDIO As with any thriving design company, there’s a story behind AK Studio’s success. “Our company started out in 1980 under the name Hiline Design, and as the business grew, we forged a relationship with SieMatic Kitchens of Germany, becoming their local dealer and building a showroom,” says designer Rob Rubin. “In 2001, we partnered with The Construction Zone and rebranded as AK Studio.” Since then, AK Studio has focused on high-end, custom residential and niche commercial projects, gaining recognition for using the newest technologies in its millwork, cabinetry and furniture. To stay at this level takes a commitment to the creative process and client inclusion—both of which begin upon stepping into AK Studio’s showroom. As Rubin says, “you don’t know what you like until you know what you don’t like.” While AK Studio looks to the future, the past lies at its core—the lineage of highly skilled craftsmen. “Their pride and commitment are central to our company’s values,” Rubin says.

What style is your firm most known for? Our design approach can be best described as modern and minimalistic with a focus on detailing. We tend to use honest but dissimilar materials such as steel, wood, glass, concrete and stone, and place a special emphasis on the articulation and integration of those materials. What type of project or location would you love to take on or work in? We think it’d be really exciting to take what we’ve learned from our residential and commercial work and tackle the interior of a yacht or jet. What is the next move for your firm? We are excited to announce our latest milestone, which is the opening of our new showroom at 1729 East Osborn in Phoenix. We welcome all readers and industry professionals to come by and have a look at our new space.

STONE + TILE
FACINGS OF AMERICA Facings of America combines the local touch of a family-owned business with a global offering of finely curated tile and stone from its two, award-winning showrooms. It’s a juxtaposition the company welcomes with open arms. “Facings was humbly established in 1967 with the vision of bringing quality products and exceptional service to market,” president Richard van Gilse says. “Since then, our family business has grown to include two showrooms staffed with the most knowledgeable and respected design consultants in the industry.” Over the past five decades, Facings of America has been involved with many prestigious projects, including estates, dream homes and commercial properties, both here and abroad. For van Gilse and his team, one of the main takeaways from these opportunities has become the driving force behind helping the company sustain and grow: “It isn’t about the number or size of the projects we are a part of, but rather the relationships we have developed and the consistency of the service we offer,” he says, speaking to the many relationships formed with clients, interior designers, architects, home builders, craftsmen and more. “Working as trusted advisors to top talent in the industry drives us to perform better on every project.”

“ Our clients are the creative driving force behind each project.”
Ask the Expert What are some ways clients can work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Collaboration and communication are the keys to a successfully executed project. We believe that offering the best materials and education to our clients makes us an invaluable trade partner. To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success and why? Our success comes from our relationships with our clients. Through decades of executing our clients’ visions, building trust and seeing projects to the end, Facings has become a “go to” in the A&D community.
