BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

Eldorado Stone has been at the forefront of its industry for the past 45 years. From its humble beginnings to the international presence it boasts today, Eldorado’s core philosophy has remained the same—believability. Each of the company’s natural ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ Ăƒ Ă€iÂŤ V>ĂŒi` ĂŒ ĂŒ i w iĂƒĂŒ `iĂŒ> Ăƒ v ĂŒiĂ?ĂŒĂ•Ă€i > ` V Ă€] ĂžiĂŒ offers a lightweight, concrete stone veneer solution. MODERN DESIGN The newest of Eldorado’s extensive options, the Modern Collection features 34 new colors and 6 new profiles. EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

Luxe Interiors + Design was about town hosting some of the industry’s best events and social gatherings! First, Chicago House recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with the Another Door Opens event at Architectural Artifacts. The support from the design industry was overwhelming, as over 30 top designers, architects and artists were present to auction off their one-of-a-kind vintage doors. Attendees mingled with industry partners and delighted in specialty cocktails and a delectable spread of appetizers. Plus, on February 4, Riobel collaborated with Studio 41 and Luxe for its Hot & Cold event, which took place at Studio 41’s River North showroom and featured the latest designs from Riobel’s faucets, shower systems and accessories. Guests enjoyed signature hot and cold appetizers and custom cocktails, as well as posed for pictures with the Riobel Bubble Girls, while the DJ spun the tunes. Cheers!

CONTRIBUTORS

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

JOANNA MCCLURE

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

Designed by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Aegean collection, available in aluminum and teak, is a study in uncluttered minimalism.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

NORMAN KELLEY

Carrie Norman and Thomas Kelley first collaborated as students at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture. Now, an innovative architecture-and-design collaborative, Norman Kelley is disrupting the current landscape of the Chicago architecture industry. Most recently, the pair completed much-buzzed-about window dressings on Michigan Avenue’s façade of the Chicago Cultural Center during the Chicago Architecture Biennial for a project called, “Chicago, How Do You See?” Their work spans design disciplines with a singular intention: making architecture through whatever means and in whatever medium necessary. Here, the duo share what’s on their radar this summer in Chicago. normankelley.us What’s intriguing you now? It appears that the Midwest is becoming more comfortable in its own skin. This is always clear when architects such as Stanley Tigerman, Jeanne Gang or John Ronan speak about Chicago but is now becoming more accepted. For the architecture-obsessed: Our favorite stops are the lobby of the Monadnock Building in the South Loop, Graceland Cemetery and the McCormick campus center at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Neighborhood of choice: We are currently frequenting the artistic Pilsen neighborhood 116 / LUXESOURCE.COM

on account of the super-hip dive bar Skylark, Dusek’s and live music venue Thalia Hall. On your radar? We can’t wait for Johnston Marklee to unveil its master plan for the Museum of Contemporary Art. Also, look out for our construction project, Aesop’s first foray into the Midwest, in Bucktown. Ones to watch: We are keeping an eye on our studiomates, Allison Newmeyer and Stewart Hicks of Design With Company, who recently collaborated on a pavilion with Airbnb and Design Miami last fall.

“The Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago is my favorite museum in the city, hands down. It features architecture by Renzo Piano and an outstanding collection, not to mention I was married there two years ago! Another go-to for contemporary art is the sleek husband-and-wifeowned Regards Gallery in the Ukrainian Village.”

“Like most Chicagoans, I love the Art Institute. I grew up with a Monetloving mother and, while Renoir is my favorite, I always stop to see Water Lilies. For even more architectural inspiration, I head to the Chicago Cultural Center. The stunning Tiffany glass dome makes this space one of the most impressive in the city.”

“The Zhou B Art Center is my most-loved gallery in all of Chicago. It’s a community of artists who feature their work in a communal setting, and it boasts some of the best talents in the Midwest. You’ll have to venture outside of your trendy comfort zone to the industrial neighborhood of Bridgeport to fi nd this hidden gem.”

WHO: Aspiring opera singer and blogger Daina Fischer fills her effortlessly chic feed with shopping jaunts, architectural gems and Chicago’s prettiest cappuccinos. WHAT: Fischer offers viewers a glimpse into a life well-styled and an insider’s perspective on the Windy City. Look for inspirational phrases, fresh foliage and occasional snaps of her handsome cat. WHY: Her must-follow feed acts as an expertly curated journal for a stylish Chicagoan’s day-to-day life. All of the shots are taken on the go and seek to inspire the notion to stop and smell the roses. IN HER WORDS: “My favorite phrase is ‘simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.’ It’s the little things that catch my eye—the imperfection of an old wooden table, the symmetry of architecture, an arrangement of freshly picked flowers. DATE BOOK TIFFANY PAIGE

On a vintage hub of 18th Street in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood sits Modern Cooperative, a go-to spot for all things midcentury. This one-of-a-kind shop carries an assemblage of what co-owner Tiffany Paige describes as “a highly curated collection of midcentury modern, bohemian and reclaimed home furnishings and local handmade wares.” Modern Cooperative, which opened its second location this past fall, was born when two impassioned collectors—Paige and partner Mike Biersma—who love their community of Pilsen, decided to invest in its artists and makers. Expect to find the reclaimed woodwork of Chicago’s Norman Leigh Design, chic fiber art and ceramics from Milwaukee’s Janelle Gramling and handmade statement jewelry from Lindsay Lewis. The shop also features a large selection from Gus Modern and will soon stock the sought-after Loloi rugs. Paige makes it her daily mission to scour the Midwest for the handmade and vintage pieces her customers crave. Read below as Paige divulges her favorite local spots and get the scoop on all things vintage from her stretch of 18th Street. moderncooperative.com

12 p.m. Now that you’re properly stuffed, head over to the National Museum of Mexican Art. There, you can immerse yourself in the richness of Mexican art and culture in the heart of Chicago’s Mexican community. The must-see exhibits are the folk art and the textile displays at the museum’s permanent collection, “Nuestras Historias: Stories of Mexican Identity from the Permanent Collection.” Make sure you also pop into the museum’s killer gift shop! 1 p.m. If you need a pick-me-up, stop into Café Jumping Bean on 18 th Street, a Pilsen staple that has been open for over 20 years! Sip on your Café Carmela as you browse through the diverse selection of albums at 606 Records. The owners are awesome and are always spinning a great tune. 2 p.m. Next, hit some of our go-to vintage spots: Knee Deep Vintage, Pilsen Vintage & Thrift, Very Best Vintage and Comet Vintage. Each location offers vintage clothing and accessories and has a unique style and vision. 4 p.m. Come see us at ModCo Pilsen! We are 4,000 square feet of vintage modern and local handmade products. 11 a.m. Start your day with an early brunch at Pl-zen, a Latin-inspired gastropub and neighborhood favorite. Get a little boozy with a serrano-infused-tequila Bloody Mary, and then order the breakfast doughnuts and chilaquiles. Make sure you also say hi to the owners, Cesar and Adriana.

We also carry well over 100 lines of local handmade goods and Toronto-based furniture brand Gus Modern. 5 p.m. Make one last stop at two of my favorite shops in the area, one of which is Market Supply Co. It offers fine vintage clothing and accessories, carefully curated by the owners’ expert eyes and restored as needed. The other is Verdant Matter, which is the latest addition to our 18th Street family. It’s a charming home goods shop offering affordable wares for both your house and garden. 7 p.m. By now you’re likely ready for drinks and dinner. Make a beeline for Dusek’s for an amazing selection of beer that pairs perfectly with its dinner menu. Afterward, head downstairs to keep the night going at the 1970s-inpired basement bar Punch House. It has an array of handmade punches on tap. Don’t leave without getting the fondue!

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

RACHEL BENTLEY AND CARLY NANCE

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

FLORA FLAUNT THE PIECE: Twig Branch Table THE DESIGNER: George Massar for Gregorius Pineo FIND IT: gregoriuspineo.com; hollyhunt.com THE INSPIRATION: As if rooted to the ground in which its placed, the Twig Branch table is lively and playfully complex, assembled of composite stone to make it agreeable both inside and out.

GROWTH SPURT THE PIECE: Domicile G Stool THE DESIGNER: Michael Vanderbyl FIND IT: bolierco.com THE INSPIRATION: Eliciting notes of midcentury modern design with an inflection on African folk art, the Domicile G stool is a mellifluous blend of contemporary and traditional cultures.

ANNA BOND

ARTIST AND PRODUCT DESIGNER RIFLEPAPERCO.COM

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

170 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

PHOTOS: LISA COHEN.

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 172 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. On the following pages, go green with some of the season’s prettiest outdoor living spaces.

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

THRILL OF THE

CHAISE

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

TAKE SHELTER

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

CRAIG BERGMANN LANDSCAPE DESIGN “We consider what we do to be the art of fine gardening,” says landscape architect Craig Bergmann, president of Craig Bergmann Landscape Design. “We create site-specific collections of plants, much like someone may collect beautiful objects, so there is always some nuance occurring in a landscape, whether it be shape, form, shadow, flowering or foliage.” Craig Bergmann is known for his ability to complement the architecture of the home and the personality of the homeowner. In regard to proper upkeep, Bergmann offers insightful advice. “Planning for maintenance, which is where most of the environmental impact happens, occurs long before we start a design,” he says. “Collaborate with your design professional to create a plan before you begin.”

Asked to identify changes in the industry and how they affect his business and clients, owner and president Gene Jurczak points to the increase in homeowner involvement. “Consumer awareness has grown considerably,” he says. “The consumers are more involved, and after learning about high-quality products that don’t require much effort, they know what they want before they set foot in the showroom.” Trends play a role in nearly every residential industry, and outdoor living is no different. Jurczak notes that one of the company’s signature products, Fiandre, has become a favorite for its durability and beauty. “Fiandre has been at the center of our recent excitement,” he says. “It is turning heads and becoming more popular each day.”

Since its launch in 2008, Middlefork Development has distinguished itself by developing family-centric homes that embrace classical elegance and create enduring value. The Chicago-based design-build firm creates each unique residence upon the premise that “heirloom rather than trophy” always prevails. As a result, a Middlefork-designed and built home is as practical as it is aesthetically beautiful. Andrew Bowyer, Middlefork Development’s president, expounds on his award-winning firm’s creative processes and inspiration. “I tend to look to traditional, classical architecture as a reference point. I believe the underlying order, rules and proportions present in classical architecture are still relevant and assist in the creation of very comfortable spaces,” he says. “Fortunately, the principles of classical architecture can be used as a foundation for a more contemporary home that is responsive to the needs of today’s family. We can create open, kid-friendly spaces that are also elegantly designed and proportioned, and which also serve as stunning backdrops for living and entertaining.” To date, the company’s luxurious single-family homes— primarily located in premier residential neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, Lakeview and the North Shore— remain on the market for less than a month. In fact, 22 days is the average for a Middlefork home to be on the market, assuming the home has not pre-sold during the construction phase. The success of the firm’s speculative homes has propelled the company into the upper echelon of Chicago builders. In 2013, the company expanded into the high-end custom home market, working extensively with clients to program, design and construct their dream homes. “As long as Middlefork can create a product that generates value, and is a strong investment for the homeowner, the model will continue to grow and evolve,” Bowyer says. 1 North Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois 312.214.0400 abowyer@middleforkluxury.com middleforkluxury.com

Q+A What led you to your current profession? In 2008, with the bust of the housing market, I saw an opportunity to combine my business and creative backgrounds into a career developing luxury residential architecture. Analyses showed that luxury buyers were still buying, but had limited inventory from which to choose. As a result, I decided to take a risk and jumped into the development market. What do you strive to create when you’re working on a project? Timeless, bespoke architecture that offers well-proportioned, familyoriented spaces enveloped in elegant and luxurious finishes. What are you working on next? We are excited about completing 1922 N. Dayton. This 6-bedroom home—with en suite bathrooms in each bedroom—is brand new and on one of Lincoln Park’s most desirable streets. The neo-Georgian, brick and limestone façade features well-crafted detailing both inside and out. 1734 N. Mohawk is under construction and will be available this summer. It is reminiscent of the classic, turn-of-the-century greystones still found on streets such as Astor and Dearborn. It will have a stately façade with a transitional-style interior.

W

hile many empty nesters jettison their large, traditional suburban homes for coolly sophisticated, modern city apartments, one North Shore couple— after raising four children—ultimately decided to forgo a move and stay put. Although they loved their verdant 2-acre-plus site with its abundance of mature oaks, they still craved a more modern vernacular. “They had lived in a beautiful home but wanted to create a house with a simpler aesthetic and a more contemporary appeal that fit their current needs,” says interior designer Arlene Semel, who worked on the project with principal Brian Snow and senior designer Mary Ennis-Smith. Off the table, however, was the usual glass box with sleek polished surfaces and extravagant materials. “The wife was absolutely steadfast about not wanting the house to be precious,” says Semel. Rather, the clients desired a home that featured a prolific use of wood, connections

to the outdoors and Asian-inflected furnishings—with such Japanese design concepts as kanso (simplicity), shibui (understated beauty) and shizen (naturalness). To begin the project, architect Laurence Booth conceived an open-concept layout. “I really envisioned a home with free-flowing interior spaces,” says Booth, who worked on the residence with project architect Alex Schabel and project manager Christopher Guido. According to Booth, the influence of Japanese architecture, lots of wood, corner windows where glass meets glass, natural materials and nothing too shiny are all evident in the home’s design. Additionally, the house had to function on a variety of levels. “It had to beautifully serve two people but easily accommodate their children and grandchildren plus smalland-large entertaining needs,” Snow says. Booth and his team responded with a design comprising an H-shaped structure whose connecting middle would be a glass box housing a spectacular handcrafted metal staircase.

Working with designs by landscape architect Douglas Hoerr, Mariani Landscape installed a courtyard that embraces the front entrance, which incorporates granite slabs that function as sculptural seating; the lanterns were existing. Inside, the staircase was conceived by Booth Hansen and fabricated by Fine Art Metalwork in Ironwood, Michigan.

In the kitchen, countertops supplied by Norstone and fabricated by Rocktops pair with cabinetry designed by architect Laurence Booth and handcrafted of white oak by Eiesland Woodwork Co. The counter stools are from The Bright Group. Clerestory windows over cabinets allow natural light to pour into the kitchen.

The stairway was intended to be a piece of sculpture, which the design—executed by the team at Booth Hansen—beautifully fulfills. Says general contractor Arvid Eiesland, “the massive staircase’s three parts had to be soldered together on site before the walls and windows were installed in the stair hall.” Throughout the dwelling, Booth also provided spaces with high ceilings and opened up the house to the outdoors, another Japanese concept. “Creating openings from interior spaces that frame views of trees, sky, sunlight and flora was the goal of this design,” Booth says. “Wonderful homes connect people to landscapes.” The architect opted for stucco walls—regularly interspersed with windows and doors with frames—that feature aluminum on the outside and wood on the inside. Moreover, the profusion of riftsawn, European-cut and plane-sliced oak can be found throughout the interiors. Wood, of course, emanates the shizen concept and is the chief material of Japanese

architecture; it imparts mellow warmth that humanizes even soaring spaces such as the double-height living room. Aside from many of the Asian antiques that can be found around the home, Semel relied on a broader and more eclectic assortment of international furniture archetypes, many of which—though of diverse cultural provenance— are unified by their straightforward, unadorned integrity, or shibui. “Beautiful pieces live well together,” Semel says. “These furnishings are more earthy than dressy, without a lot of frill. They’re also not polished yet not rustic either, and some pieces are very sophisticated.” A long table in the master bedroom, for example, is fashioned from a 12-foot-long wood plank supported by carved legs and connected by hand-forged iron stretchers, while the console in the living room is Spanish Baroque. Furthermore, a Swedish Mora clock resides in a hall near the stairway, comb-back Windsor armchairs mingle with a chunky French Renaissance oak trestle table in the combined family and

dining room, and a French apothecary cabinet in one of the guest rooms shares space with an English bobbin chair and a wooden sea chest. The materials around the home are also incredibly inviting. “The fabrics are very soft and beautifully woven,” Semel says. “You feel the handmade quality of everything.” And, in keeping with the kanso spirit, many of the windows are not dressed. “The outside is so beautiful and so much of what this house is about,” Semel explains. “There was really no point in adding draperies.” Instead, hidden motorized shades do the trick when the couple want privacy. Because the site was the principal reason for the couple to stay put, landscape architect Douglas Hoerr took great care to preserve the mature trees, protecting generous areas and their root zones from construction. He also worked closely with the design team to conceptualize a house that’s final design was informed by and respectful

of the site. Then, Hoerr designed gardens of naturalistic native perennials, bulbs and grasses “that would be seasonally dynamic with fluidity and privacy,” says Hoerr, who worked on the home with project manager Patrick Peterson. A woodland garden of rhododendron, boxwood and evergreen situated in a courtyard that embraces the front entrance “became the couple’s art wall,” he adds, referring to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall around the staircase that, when viewed from indoors, is transformed into a threedimensional landscape. “The house seeks to blend with the outdoors, giving nature the starring role,” says Booth. This combination of Midwestern landscape, international furnishings and architecture that is Japanese in spirit, while still being thoroughly American, makes this an exceedingly dynamic and distinctive home. “The couple had a real interest in planning the house,” says Semel. “It was a wonderful project because of their clear vision.”

Custom panels from Duross Design and Development in Johnstown, New York, surround the study’s steel fireplace. A. I “BRINGING FRESH INSIGHT TO A WELLWORN GENRE IS CHALLENGING YET INCREDIBLY SATISFYING.” -MIKE DREEBEN

t was furniture designer Mike Dreeben’s fascination with theme and variation in object design that brought him to Jaipur, India, in 1998. Having finished a Masters of Fine Arts degree in sculpture at The University of Chicago, he came to India on a Fulbright scholarship—focusing specifically on traditional Indian-cart making. “On paper, all bullock carts are essentially the same thing: two wheels, a frame and a hitch. But the realization of the object can be completely different based on a constellation of factors such as regional terrain and locally available materials,” says Dreeben. “I love working with a narrow set of parameters like this and trying to make decisions within them.” While getting acquainted with the city’s community, Dreeben met Jaipur native Ayush Kasliwal, and the pair developed a friendship rooted in their mutual love of traditional craft practices and modern design. Kasliwal, who had recently received a degree in furniture design from the National Institute of Design in India, also related to Dreeben’s pragmatic approach to process and material. “I’ve always appreciated Mike’s perseverance on getting something right and his unreserved admiration for functional form as sculpture,” Kasliwal says. When his grant was up, Dreeben returned to Chicago and the friends stayed in touch, sharing design advice and inspiration across the miles.

It wasn’t until 13 years later that the duo officially merged their respective lines together. The result is AKMD—a modern and cleanlined collection with a focus on chairs and tables, including the USA-OK chair and the Dart table, with accessories like the Origami bowls rounding out the assemblage. And, the pair constantly strive to come up with original interpretations within the narrow framework of these everyday pieces. “Bringing fresh insight to a well-worn genre is challenging yet incredibly satisfying,” says Dreeben, noting the made-to-order collection can be found locally at Gild Assembly and finished for outdoor use, if requested. Collaborating across continents, of course, has its challenges, but the duo tackle them by playing to their personal strengths as well as their geographical ones. Kasliwal, for example, works closely with a family of traditional Indian saddle makers to develop the rich leather used on many of their chairs, while Dreeben sources sustainably harvested wood from Minnesota and helps plant hundreds of seedlings a year to replenish the lumber they use. “AKMD has been a collaboration in the true sense of the word,” says Kasliwal. “We’ve learned a lot together, made mistakes and shared successes.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 229

T

rading in suburban life for city dwelling isn’t always easy, as few people like the idea of giving up both space and access to nature. But architect Catherine Osika and designer Bruce Fox know that sometimes you can have it all. The duo’s clients, a professional couple and their teenage son, were living in Chicago’s suburbs and liked their proximity to nature but also wanted to take advantage of the city’s offerings. “I enjoy walking places,” says the wife. “We wanted to see more theater and hear more live music.” So, when the husband discovered the ideal apartment for what they were looking for—with more than 2,000 square feet of outdoor space and sweeping views of Lake Michigan—the couple purchased it and called Osika. “I knew Cathy’s work and had always liked it,” says the husband. “And she highly recommended Bruce.”

The architect and designer joined forces to imagine a plan that brought a little bit of country to the city. “The husband likes to hunt and camp,” says Osika, who at the time of the design was with Burns + Beyerl Architects and worked with project architect Jeffrey Whiteman on the home. Adds Fox: “They’re drawn to texture, warmth and inviting elements, so we came up with the idea of an urban cabin. We wanted to create something that felt comfortable and casual yet still sophisticated.” Osika, who is now with Related Midwest, was able to start the project with a blank canvas. “The clients bought the apartment as a raw space,” she says. Because the space was unfinished, the couple could turn it into what they wanted: a home that embraced views and supported their love of entertaining. “We entertain for work and also have a very large family,” says the wife. circulation and socializing, Osika designed an open layout with delineated spaces that are accessed via wide openings. “The rooms are contained but flow in and out of one another,” she says. “I made the thresholds deep and called them out with custom stained white-oak paneling that has a groove detail.” Both Osika and Fox outfitted the threshold that connects the living and dining rooms with a built-in bar, making it more than just a transition space. “Everybody gathers there,” says Osika. Here, she used white oak for the kitchen cabinetry and the library bookshelves, which double as a secret door to the son’s room. “The wood recalls the idea of a cabin but in a polished way,” she adds. Cooking is as important to the family as entertaining. “They wanted people to be able to hang out in the kitchen while they prepare food,” says Fox, who collaborated with project designer Lisa Demet. To visually designate the kitchen, Fox and Osika added informality to the space by covering the floor with reclaimed terra-cotta tiles. “It’s French and has such a rich texture, character and color,” he says. “Cooking spice shades like paprika and curry inspired the warm colors of the entire design.” For example, counter stools with seats and backs made of woven leather in burnt sienna pull up to the kitchen island, and a rust-colored kilim rug covers the floor in the adjacent breakfast area. Fox tempered the warm tones with a statement-making blue lacquered cabinet. “There are magnificent views of the lake and the sky from many of the rooms, so I did a thread of blue throughout,” says Fox, who also adorned the walls of the dining room with blue-colored plaster.

“That plaster went up and transformed the entire space,” says general contractor James Kastenholz. “Other walls throughout the space catch the light and look like suede.” In the entry, Fox placed a cabinet wrapped in aqua leather to cool the gold-toned wall paint, an olive-colored glass pendant and floor tile laid in a plaid pattern. In addition to color, Fox juxtaposed styles and textures. “I like the idea that two very different things can exist in the same space,” he says. “A mix of elements creates interest and personality.” In the living room, for instance, traditionalstyle armchairs are upholstered with gold linen-velvet and flank a contemporary faux bois accent table, while rustic plaid textiles on sofa pillows and a lounge chair contrast with luxurious gold details in other pillows. Moreover, a wall covered in grass cloth in the master bedroom counters the fanciful ceiling fixture. In the dining room, floral cotton draperies mingle with horsehair-upholstered chairs. “The draperies feel like they might’ve hung in a cabin, but the horsehair is just so elegant,” Fox says. Much like the apartment’s interior, the terrace provides a connection to both the city and nature. “You can see the John Hancock Center as well as ducks swimming on the North Pond,” says Osika. The team arranged outdoor sitting areas for the space—each having special elements such as a fire pit, a water feature and a living wall, which includes seasonal herbs, annuals and succulents. A diverse mixture of perennials add color with ornamental grasses rustling in the lakefront breeze. Additionally, Osika collaborated with landscape architect Brian Culliton of Culliton Quinn Landscape Architecture on the terrace’s design and many of its components. “Since the project incorporates a number of site features, it was essential to develop a plan with a cohesive aesthetic,” Culliton says. “Everything had to be designed in sections or fabricated on site since there were size limitations based on the freight elevator.” Since the remodeling, the owners couldn’t be more pleased with the result. “We spend more time outside here than we did at our house in the suburbs,” says the husband. Adds the wife: “This place is just so comfortable. It really feels like home.”

CHICAGO DECORATIVE ARTIST PATRICK ROULLIER CREATES STUNNING WORKS THAT FEATURE HISTORICAL REFERENCES WITH PRESENT-DAY APPEAL. WRITTEN BY APRIL HARDWICK / PHOTOGRAPHY BY CYNTHIA LYNN

Decorative artist Patrick Roullier (opposite) fashions a variety of distinct works in his Chicago studio. For example, flowers painted over Italian law documents from 1870 (previous pages) are ultimately folded to look like bundles of floral and are then framed in shadow boxes. Additionally, sample boards featuring birds were conceptualized to show a client different options of murals (right).

F

or me, decorative arts are the intersection of history, materials, culture and creativity,” says Chicago-based artist Patrick Roullier. “I’m constantly experimenting with different techniques as well as new materials and tools to create something fresh and timeless.” Historical context with a contemporary eye is a constant theme in Roullier’s work, which runs the gamut from murals and artwork to painted furniture and décor. Working mostly in the residential sphere, Roullier admits that the thrill comes from trying new artistic methods and collaborating with designers and clients. “It’s really exciting to discuss concepts, create samples and bring ideas to life,” he says. Case in point: A mural in the style of 18th-century panoramic wallpaper features traditional scenes of India that came about with guidance from his clients. Furthermore, the faux-marble paper ceiling of a library was inspired by another client’s antique books; walnut walls act as the cover and the ceiling is the book’s interior. “It really gave the ceiling an embellished yet tailored feel,” Roullier says. Growing up in rural Michigan with a creative family, it’s no wonder that Roullier’s artistic endeavors run deep. “My grandmother knitted, painted and created ceramics,” he says. Attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago furthered Roullier’s imagination, where he focused on classical painting techniques, graphic design and scientific illustration with the ambition of earning a graduate degree

in medical illustration. However, a fortuitous meeting with mentor Anna Chiara Branca (whose daughter Alessandra Branca owns Chicago- and New York-based Branca) changed his life’s course. “She exposed me to the traditional decorative arts and inspired me to learn about its history and many applications, which really colored my world,” he says. But it was in the course of several years at Frederick Cooper, where Roullier honed his skills—gilding, faux bois, rosemaling—and became fully immersed in production, working with artisans on collections with established designers like Mario Buatta. Today, new endeavors are constantly in rotation for Roullier. Most recently, the artist completed decorative painting elements for a new museum in the suburbs of Chicago, and he has several projects in the works for Los Angeles designer Ruthie Sommers. “I have such a passion for the creative process,” says Roullier. “It’s so humbling to have designers and clients recognize the effort in my work.”

BALANCED EQUATION LUXURIOUS SURFACES, WARM UPHOLSTERY AND A THIRD-FLOOR ADDITION ALL HELP TO CREATE A COMFORTABLE CHICAGO HOME FOR A YOUNG URBAN FAMILY. WRITTEN BY TATE GUNNERSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY SOLURI

INTERIOR DESIGN / TRACY HICKMAN AND ANNETTE ZELNICK, HICKMAN DESIGN ASSOCIATES ARCHITECTURE / KEVIN TOUKOUMIDIS AND TOM HAGERTY, DSPACE STUDIO LTD. HOME BUILDER / JEFFREY BERRY, GOLDBERG GENERAL CONTRACTING, INC. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE / MIMI MCKAY, MCKAY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS

Right: The third-floor addition of this Chicago home, clad with custom charcoal-metal panels from Heritage Sheet Metal, was set back several feet by architect Kevin Toukoumidis. Portella Steel Doors & Windows fabricated the custom front door. Front landscaping designed by landscape architect Mimi McKay was installed by The Garden Consultants. Opposite: Interior designer Tracy Hickman conceived the custom sheer drape, featuring Classic Cloth material from Dessin Fournir and fabricated by Baird’s Drapery Services, to bring privacy and softness to the three-story window in the home’s center atrium. The new triangular-shaped skylight is from Imperial Glass Structures.

T

he house was a 1970s throwback,” says interior designer Tracy Hickman of her clients’ modernist Chicago abode. When the young couple decided to completely renovate their home—originally built in ’79—they instructed their design team, which also included architect Kevin Toukoumidis and home builder Jeffrey Berry, to embrace its contemporary lines while creating a cozy vibe that would suit their growing family. “The husband really liked the home’s modern appeal, but the wife didn’t want something quite so cold,” says Hickman, who worked on the house with project manager Annette Zelnick. “So, she pulled me in to keep the integrity of the spaces, but in a warm and transitional way.” 250 / LUXESOURCE.COM

The result of the extensive revamp and third-floor addition is a home distinguished by a light-filled center atrium with an open steel staircase that runs alongside a soaring diagonal wall. “The footprint of this house steps back, and, in lieu of square footage, we created bigger windows that allow for more natural light,” explains Toukoumidis. To create a sense of privacy, Hickman designed a custom sheer drape with a motorized control for the three-story window. “All of the surfaces were a bit hard and slick,” Hickman says. “I felt that we needed a sheer drapery wall to make the house feel less stark. It’s like fabric architecture.” A custom bronze-and-glass chandelier that’s suspended from the skylight adds yet

Opposite: Benjamin Moore’s Dove Wing paint frames the living room’s built-in bar, which features custom walnut cabinetry designed by Toukoumidis and project architect Tom Hagerty and built by Stay-Straight Manufacturing. The countertop is from Stone Source, and the mirror was fabricated by Illinois Glassworks. Wood flooring is by Hank’s Floor Service. Below: In the living room, a sofa designed by Hickman and fabricated by Anees Upholstery is swathed in Glant fabric. Coffee tables from Bradley, a Holly Hunt armchair covered in Pollack fabric from Donghia and a wingback chair from Coup D’Etat in San Francisco grace a carpet from Holland & Sherry. The large artwark by Retna is from Guy Hepner in New York.

Above: To play up the architecture in the dining room, Hickman placed Caste side chairs from Holly Hunt next to a live-edge wood table from Casa Spazio with a metal base and a custom bench dressed in Castel fabric. The fixture is by Kevin Reilly. A leather-padded wall and walnut-ceiling panels create an interplay of cool and warm influences. Left: A Lindsey Adelman Studio chandelier adds a beautiful focal point in the spacious kitchen, which includes custom walnut cabinetry conceived by the architects, white-quartz countertops from Stone Source and appliances from Abt. Wood-and-leather stools from BDDW in New York coordinate with Dornbracht faucets from Studio41.

another layer to the ensemble. “The fixture really draws your eye upward,” says project architect Tom Hagerty. It was Hagerty’s idea to conserve valuable floor space by using a thin sheet of frosted glass rather than drywall for the partition between the hallway and the master bathroom on the third-floor addition. The master bathroom receives natural light from a skylight above the sculptural tub during the day, and at night, the wall itself appears to glow thanks to concealed LED lights. “The clients love the added space and light,” Hagerty says. Adding the third story, however, required extensive retrofitting of the original structure. “We drilled into the concrete block with an epoxy injection bolt that melds the interior block with the outer brick,” says Berry. According to the builder, the foundation footings weren’t strong enough to handle the load of the third-story addition, so the team dug down and added mass to them. To create a sense of continuity, the team employed a limited palette of materials that includes blackened steel, white quartz and walnut—which was used to build the

custom cabinetry in the living room and to create the ceiling panels that define the kitchen and dining room. “The edited material palette allows for a cohesiveness throughout the home and provides a calming environment that highlights the architecture,” says Toukoumidis. Additionally, a textural palette of fabrics in predominantly gray and tan hues introduces another layer to the interiors. “The goal was to contrast the modern architecture and soften it to some degree,” Hickman says. “Whether it was a contrast in colors or in textures, I wanted this warm and cool juxtaposition to happen.” In the living room, for example, a wool-and-cashmere sofa mingles with a pair of iron coffee tables featuring concrete tops. Despite the room’s relatively narrow dimensions, Hickman was able to form a second distinct seating area by placing a pair of club chairs next to the fireplace. “The raised hearth creates a natural spot where you can set down a drink and curl up with a book,” Hickman says. “The chairs are curvy but still very handsome; a 50-50 split between masculine and feminine.”

Down the hall from the master bedroom, the sitting room includes a Berman/Rosetti sofa from Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman covered in Theo leather from Dessin Fournir and Rosemary Hallgarten alpaca boucle from Holland & Sherry. A Roll & Hill chandelier hangs above a trunk cloaked in Kyle Bunting hair-on-hide from David Sutherland.

Toukoumidis and Hagerty collaborated with Studio Dunn in Rumford, Rhode Island, to design the contemporary light fixture that illuminates the center atrium. A new three-story aluminum-window system by C.R. Laurence Co. creates a modern aesthetic. The staircase, conceived by the architects, was fabricated by Dynamic Iron.

LUXESOURCE.COM / 257

Right: To make the most of a compressed floor plan on the new third-floor addition, Toukoumidis and Hagerty eschewed drywall in favor of a thin piece of frosted glass by Illinois Glassworks, which is illuminated with concealed LED lights from Luminii. Artwork by Banksy resides down the hall. Opposite: A light fixture from The Urban Electric Co. brightens the master bathroom, where Lea Ceramiche shower tiles join flooring from Stone Source. Custom walnut cabinetry by the architects pairs with Kohler sinks and faucets, all from Studio41. The tub is by Victoria + Albert, and the custom mirror includes Robern medicine cabinets.

LUXESOURCE.COM / 259

260 / LUXESOURCE.COM

In the master bedroom, a Holly Hunt bed featuring an upholstered headboard is covered in bedding made with fabrics by Castel, de Le Cuona and Sandra Jordan. The alpaca-hide rug from Watson Smith and a bench re-covered in shearling from Keleen Leathers continue the mix of textures. Lindsey Adelman Studio pendants brighten side tables from BDDW.

That playful dance of influences continues in the dining room, where sculptural chairs contrast with the light fixture’s rectilinear lines and a leather-padded wall behind the custom bench. “The organic shape of the chairs ties in with the kitchen’s chandelier, too,” says Hickman, pointing to the shapely fixture hanging over the whitequartz island. “I really pushed for this fixture because it broke up the rectilinear cabinetry.” Furthermore, a pair of glass pendants adds an elegant touch to the master bedroom—a lively, welcoming retreat with an upholstered headboard, alpaca-hide rug and bench re-covered in a sumptuous shearling. “The bench’s legs are a fun shape against the more angular lines in the bedroom,” Hickman says. According to the designer, being in the bedroom looking out over the garden and through the leaves feels like being in a tree house. Although the home is sandwiched between two three-story structures, a trio of tall European beech trees planted just outside the kitchen window helps to break up the brick views. “Screening views in the city is always a challenge,” says landscape architect Mimi McKay. “So, to create privacy, we added in trees to conceal the sight of their neighbor’s property.” Moreover, the approach from the front walk is equally as appealing, especially during the evenings. When the entry foyer and garden are illuminated, the home appears to glow from within. “From the front sidewalk you can see all the way through the house, which is very inviting,” Toukoumidis says. Overall, the home came together with perfect precision, thanks to input from the homeowners. “Working with clients who are so appreciative of good design was very rewarding,” adds Toukoumidis. Mission accomplished.

INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
