ON THE COVER: The living room of this Chicago penthouse designed by Lauren Svenstrup nods to her client's career as a mountaineer. NATIONAL LOOKBOOK

Made in America

ARTISTIC TILE artistictile.com |

artistic_tile

With its headquarters and 125,000-square-foot distribution center in New Jersey, an extensive slab gallery and stone shop, eight showrooms and over 200 dealers nationwide, Artistic Tile is living the American design dream. Answering the American call for top quality, customization and the ability to choose materials firsthand, Artistic Tile delivers on these and more with a full-service, one-stopshop experience. “Our production capabilities allow customers complete freedom to design their dream space in a myriad of colors, shapes and patterns,” CEO and founder Nancy Epstein says. “And they will have the highest-quality materials that will fit perfectly in their homes. Clients can select materials in person or watch them being made at our Secaucus facility.”

“Stone is a product of permanence; something that is natural, elegant, lasts forever and cannot be imitated.”

SETTING THE BAR Since 1987, Artistic Tile has served the most discerning consumers of luxury tile and stone products under the guidance of Epstein, who continues to lead the company into the future, along with her sons Michael and Zachary Epstein, and cousins Lauren Cherkas and Joshua Levinson. Today, through its headquarters and its showrooms in New York, New Jersey, San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas, Artistic Tile leads the market, producing designs that define the direction of the tile industry. Exquisite attention to detail ensures a final product that sets the bar for the luxury tile segment. “We are known for our innovative, award-winning designs in stone, glass and other mixed materials,” Epstein says. “We also source the highest-quality materials from all over the world and stock many beautiful natural products.” 1

THE LOCAL DIFFERENCE Artistic Tile uses its New Jersey manufacturing facilities to prototype and test out new ideas, patterns and colors. “We can walk into the production area and use what they are currently making to inform our latest ideas,” Epstein says. “It is a great symbiotic relationship having a variety of machines right next to our design department.”

t was the end of New York Fashion Week and the kick-off to the design season when I found myself in the spirited world of designer Johnson Hartig of fashion brand Libertine. We were jammed into BGs, celebrating the launch of his new textile collection for Schumacher, and I got to chatting with Johnson about our shared belief in the importance of beauty; how deeply it can move you and its power as a means of emotional connection. Walking back to my hotel later, I thought about what had first sparked my own appreciation for beauty. Coincidentally, it involved Schumacher and a room in my grandmother’s home. She referred to it as the “black-and-white room,” her guest room where I stayed on my many visits. The ceiling and walls were covered in Shengyou Toile and all of the bed linens were made from the same fabric. A large white basin set upon a chic French antique table held her artistic interior garden, overflowing with lush green plantings. The table was nested into a large bay window that overlooked one of her several outdoor gardens, dotted with color in the spring and summer. That room was magical to me; it was beauty and warmth and love. This season, I encourage you to seek out beauty and hold a memory of it close to you. As Johnson reminded me...it soothes the soul.

rivolity, joie de vivre and kaleidoscopic colors are synonymous with the Christian Lacroix aesthetic. The same could be said of the brand’s creative director, Sacha Walckhoff, who stepped into the role in 2010 after Lacroix left the House. Over the last decade, Walckhoff has transformed the company from a fashion powerhouse to a leader in the lifestyle and home decor space. “We are one of the only fashion brands who truly succeeded in going into home decor since Versace and Ralph Lauren,” says the creative director. In his latest furnishings collection with Roche Bobois, Walckhoff has stayed true to the brand’s

theatrical roots, dreaming up a fantastical fairy tale world featuring prints of enchanted forests and exotic creatures living in harmony. “The House of Christian Lacroix is as much about contrast as it is about adding surprise and wonder to the narration in any collection,” says Walckhoff. Each piece in the Bois Paradis collection delights with contrasting textures, evocative shapes and geometric patterns, while paying homage to Christian Lacroix’s beginnings. “This collection is a return to the origins of the House and its founding principle: combining the raw with the sophisticated to create an unrivaled aesthetic style,” says Walckhoff. This is exemplified in furnishings like the sumptuous sofa, which features the botanical Cueillette print in a rich velvet. Other items, like the large sixpaneled screen in natural oak with glossy lacquer, serve as an ideal backdrop for the Bois Paradis motif: a silhouetted storybook scene of soaring birds, swinging apes, and lush flora and fauna. Similar dreamscapes appear in Christian Lacroix’s other home collaborations too, all helmed by Walckhoff, such as a fabric and wallpaper line with Designers Guild and, recently, a porcelain tableware

Sacha Walckhoff’s latest designs for Christian Lacroix Maison include the Bois Paradis Bleu Nigelle wallcovering for Designers Guild (shown on previous page), a porcelain tableware collection with Vista Alegre (top, right), and a furnishings line with Roche Bobois (left).

collection with Vista Alegre. Herbariae, inspired by five flowers—the poppy, narcissus, lotus, dahlia and thistle—and designed around two color themes—a graphic black-and-white palette, and a watercolor style that combines soft pinks and yellows with celadon green and peacock blue—brings a neoclassical freshness to the table. “Mixing geometric patterns and floral ones makes each of them much more interesting,” says Walckhoff. “It allows the eye to go from one point to the other when looking at the decor of the room. As Diana Vreeland said, ‘The eye has to travel.’ ” Enhancing the natural environment has been a trademark of the Christian Lacroix brand, and one that Walckhoff embraces. Iconic moments include the Butterfly Parade design created in 2012 that so embodied the frivolities and joie de vivre of Christian Lacroix that it was mistaken for an archival print. “The lesson was that if a design is close enough to the idea people have about the brand, then the design is Lacroix!” remarks Walckhoff. As a multifaceted company, Walckhoff welcomes, and uses to his advantage, a broader vision. “We are not stopped by ideas that an interior brand would not do or have. To be un-experimented, unexpected sometimes helps,” he says. Aspirations include designing a hotel or a restaurant, and with Walckhoff ’s provocative spirit, one can only imagine the mythical fairy-tale world he might dream up. “When your imagination is always on fire, you just have to move forward,” he says. “It is exciting but exhausting sometimes! It keeps me alive.”

Personality

TRAITS SCHUMACHER TAKES A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WITH JOHNSON HARTIG’S FASHION HOUSE, LIBERTINE. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL COSTELLO

Johnson Hartig, founder of the fashion label Libertine, believes clothing should showcase one’s personality and that the same goes for interior design. “The psychology of interiors fascinates me,” he observes. Hartig brings that passion to his new line with Schumacher—a 40-piece collection of wallpaper, fabric and trim showcasing a mix of bold colors and patterns, but with classical influences. “The collection encapsulates him perfectly,” remarks Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “If you were to use it all together, it makes quite the statement. But if you were to pick out separate pieces, they still translate individually.” Caponigro is a longtime fan of Hartig and she saw him as the perfect collaborator with Schumacher. The brand has a history of working with fashion designers, beginning with Paul Poiret in 1930 and later Elsa Schiaparelli and Karl Lagerfeld under the Waverly brand. The Libertine collection is an example of what Caponigro calls the “yin and yang” of the company. “We have beautiful classics,” she says. “But we’re always pushing forward in terms of fashion and fun.” Bringing his own personality to every detail, many of the pieces, like the Punk Rock Mix Tape trim, were inspired by Hartig’s childhood or his everyday life. “Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, I’ve always been inspired by punk culture,” he says. And the hand-drawn artwork of the Magical Ming Dragon fabric and wallcovering was influenced by Hartig’s own prized Tibetan rug. While his newest designs embody a sharp boldness, they maintain an underlying classic style. For example, the Modern Toile fabric and wallcovering features a contemporary twist on the traditional design using large-scale patterns, and the Java Seas fabric finds its inspiration in Indian batiks from the 16th and 17th centuries. “I can’t wait to see how people use them—even if they use a couple pillows or pieces throughout a room,” Hartig says. “It will be reflective of their personalities, as they are of mine.”

Johnson Hartig photographed in his Los Angeles home with his dog, Terrance. “The way Johnson understands home is the way he understands fashion,” says Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “He has an innate style, innate creativity.”

Italian JOB

DESIGNER CRISTINA CELESTINO EMBRACES AN ICONIC FENDI PATTERN IN HER LATEST LAUNCH WITH THE ESTEEMED FASHION HOUSE. WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY OMAR SARTOR

Formally trained as an architect, Cristina Celestino’s design direction combines traditional elements connoting heritage with a contemporary aesthetic. As a fellow Italian interior and product designer with a passion for legacy, it was quite fitting that Fendi Casa tapped Celestino for its latest groundbreaking collection, Back Home. Here, Luxe gets the scoop on the inspiration behind the collaboration with the renowned fashion label. You first worked with Fendi designing one-ofa-kind furniture for the Design Miami booth in 2016. What came next? I worked with Fendi on the Omotesando store in Tokyo, where the Design Miami concept was adapted to a pop-up using everything from the furniture to wallcoverings. Some of those pieces—mostly low tables and sofas—were then chosen and produced exclusively for several Fendi boutiques worldwide. Silvia Venturini Fendi trusted in my

vision and thought that my collection represented the Fendi world, but also had strong potential commercially. After suggesting my work to Raffaella Vignatelli, the president of Fendi Casa, this collection, Back Home, was born.

company and an Italian family heritage brand run by women, both Fendi and Fendi Casa, who offered me complete freedom in the design process. We shared a common vision, so it was a very easy collaboration from start to finish.

And the influence? Silvia Venturini Fendi asked me to create a collection of furniture inspired by the Pequin—Fendi’s signature broad stripe pattern—created back in 1987, the same year Fendi Casa launched. As for the inspiration, the overall mood is from the ’70s—and, in particular, the interiors and furniture of Willy Rizzo, a decorator and photographer who worked in Rome in the mid-60s. He mixed refined luxury with a modern vision in a bold and distinct way using very rich material combinations and finishes.

Any favorites? That would be like asking a parent to name a favorite child—it’s impossible! I love different elements in each of the pieces, and I love that they work alone as either statement and iconic pieces, or equally well together.

This is a large collection—14 products! What was it like to work with the Fendi Casa team? It was an honor to collaborate with such an iconic

What were your aspirations for this collection? My hope, as it is with all of my designs, is to create pieces that express a message and a story beyond the aesthetic value. One that people remember. Fendi Casa’s quality is impeccable, so if people choose to pass this furniture down, they can certainly do so, but I never design with those preconceptions. I simply follow my heart and my imagination.

MITCHELL BLACK X GRAY MALIN Talk about a match made in heaven. Lifestyle brand Mitchell Black, based in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood, has rolled out a licensed wallpaper collection with photographer Gray Malin and home accessories brand The Blush Label. Featuring a total of 10 patterns, including four winter and six summer scenes, they capture the effortless luxury for which Malin is known. Luxe spoke with Malin to learn more. mitchellblack.com You’re known for your beach prints. What was it like to design winter motifs? It was great fun and such a different experience transforming my winter shots into wallpaper. The winter line (including Snow Polo, left) illustrates the luxury of the destinations in the photos, such as St. Moritz and Aspen. I love how different textures shine through in these and how the vivid hues remind you of wintertime bliss. How can wallpaper transform a room? It can make a bare hallway more inviting and turn a blank wall into a focal point. Adding wallpaper to your space can

make it more cozy, comfortable and, in my opinion, way more interesting. The right wallpaper will also complement other elements of your room you’ve already worked hard to design. Tips for wallpaper newbies? Don’t let it intimidate you. First, think about the type that will work best with your space: the sleek look of traditional paper; a smooth, easy-to-clean peeland-stick paper; or vinyl, which can offer a sophisticated linen texture? Then consider using the wallpaper to accomplish the feel that you’d like the room to have.

SHELF life

Chicago-based Brininstool + Lynch— renowned for elegant spatial compositions and nuanced details in both residential and commercial projects—launched a beautiful new coffee table book, Making Architecture, in October to coincide with its own 30 th anniversary. Celebrated for its modern works rooted in Midwestern culture and drawing inspiration from Chicago legacies such as Mies van der Rohe, the architectural firm focuses on buildings that are as enduring and timeless as they are graceful and powerful. Those concepts are perfectly illustrated in the book, in which partners David Brininstool and Brad Lynch highlight 12 projects that represent the ultimate character of the practice: from country cottages around Illinois and Indiana to contemporary multi-unit residential buildings to single-family urban residences that exude sophistication. brininstool-lynch.com 098 / LUXESOURCE.COM

OPEN HOUSE MOLTENI&C

As the saying goes, nothing endures but change. Luca Lanzetta Group took this to heart when it upgraded its 3,000-square-foot Molteni&C showroom in Chicago’s Design District. The new look reflects the company’s identity under the art direction of Belgian designer Vincent Van Duysen and carries visitors through one vignette at a time, rather than an open floor plan, to highlight the fine Italian design details. “Design is like fashion—we do not have seasonal collections, but every year each brand introduces new products,” says Luca Lanzetta, founder and principal of Luca Lanzetta Group. “The showroom needed a refresh, so with the most recent collection by Molteni&C, we thought it was the perfect time to reimagine the space.” chicago.moltenigroup.com WRITTEN BY KELSEY OGLETREE

FRANCISCO GONZALEZ-PULIDO AND WALKER THISTER The team at West Town’s FGP Atelier may spend their days working on massive international projects, such as the Diablos baseball stadium and the airport in Mexico City, but by night they’re getting their culture fix. Mexican architect Francisco Gonzalez-Pulido, who leads the firm, and Walker Thister, who joined as director of business development last year, bonded over a mutual love of film. As such, they know a thing or two about historic theaters—and luckily, in Chicago, they have many to explore. Here, the dynamic duo shares a few of their favorites, which lean a little nostalgic. fgp-atelier.com

ON VIEW Chicago boutique publishing company Trope, producers of several large photography books, has launched an online gallery where collectors can purchase large-scale prints of their favorite city images—think shadowy streets, moody skylines and gritty aerials. The gallery focuses on the work of emerging street photographers, many who have large social media platforms but whose work was never available in print until now. Limited edition prints, which are offered for purchase on three types of museum-quality paper, will be exhibited to the public at Trope’s East Garfield Park studio on November 9 and by appointment through the end of the month. trope.com

THISTER’S PICKS Studebaker Theater: “This was one of the first real theaters I ever went to. At the time, it was an art house cinema—the premier place to see European films. I also love the building as a piece of architecture; originally a factory, it’s a great example of adaptive reuse.” studebakertheater.com

GONZALEZ-PULIDO’S PICKS Music Box Theatre: “I’m deeply connected to this space—not only have I seen amazing things there on-screen, but I’m part of the board of Facets, and we’ve hosted events there. It’s remarkable to be in the space; it’s charged with so many different layers of the city.” musicboxtheatre.com

Auditorium Theatre: “The building (above) stands out globally as one of the most significant pieces of architecture of the modern movement. To my knowledge, it was the first mixed-use building ever created. Also, the acoustics are phenomenal.” auditoriumtheatre.org

Chicago Symphony Orchestra: “What I really like about the place is how aggressive the seating arrangement is in relation to the performance area. It’s so immersive and dynamic, you really engage with the performance.” cso.org

Jay Pritzker Pavilion: “Beyond the architecture, I love the function that it plays urbanistically in the city. The lawn is a great public space for people to gather, and the Pavilion creates a central focal point of Millennium Park.” millenniumparkfoundation.org 100 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Harris Theater: “This is a remarkable building because it doesn’t look like a theater at all. As you approach, it has such a strong presence on the street; it’s kind of calling you. I like the character of the space because it’s about what is needed—not about making it pretty, but about making it work. That’s so Chicago.” harristheaterchicago.org

DATE BOOK Gemma Parker Design, founded by Gemma Parker-McKeon, is known for creating interiors that are classic and timeless. Born in Switzerland and having lived around the world, from Hong Kong to London, Parker-McKeon—who decided at age 11 she wanted to become an interior designer—says her travels are a major source of inspiration. Africa, Italy and Asia are among her favorite destinations, though her home city of Chicago, with its proximity to Lake Michigan and its outstanding architecture, is also a boon to her creativity. In addition to her keen eye and exquisite taste, Parker-McKeon has degrees in psychology and communication, which have been highly beneficial to her career. “Residential design is so personal,” she says. “There is so much psychology behind it.” Here, she gets personal with Luxe to share her perfect design-focused day in the city. gemmaparkerdesign.com 10 a.m. Head to The Golden Triangle to peruse Asian and European antiques, furniture and contemporary art (bottom, right). We like to style clients’ homes with authentic items that feel layered, collected and well-traveled. I lived in Asia as a child, and that, along with my extensive travel, often inspires our designs. 11 a.m. Zen out by the water. In the summer, you will often find me walking the lakefront and drawing inspiration from the views of the city and Lake Michigan. During the winter, I find myself yearning for walks by the lake, so a visit to Lincoln Schatz’s contemporary art studio to view his landscape photography fills my need (without the cold!). It is amazing to see his documentation of the shifts of the lake throughout the seasons. 12 p.m. Refuel at The Lunchroom in Space 519 (top, right). This lovely lunch spot in the Gold Coast is also a great place to pick up home goods (and perhaps a quick outfit or piece of jewelry on the way out!). Fashion inspires our designs, and we often look to the detailing and tailoring found in clothing. I always feast 102 / LUXESOURCE.COM

on The Lunchroom’s delicious green and white salad that’s made with Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, hearts of palm and pumpkin seeds. 2 p.m. Steps off Michigan Avenue, the MCA is rich in contemporary art. I’m inspired by the experimentation of the artists and their ability to create thought-provoking works that help me view things from a different perspective. Pop into Marisol on the ground floor (right) if you need a caffeine boost! 3 p.m. Stop by A New Leaf to pick up loose flowers. You’ll never find our studio without them. I find so much inspiration in nature—the textures, the colors, the fragrances. They all influence our designs in one way or another. I never buy flowers that are pre-arranged, as I love to create the arrangements myself. It fuels my creative side, but also provides a sense of relaxation and calm. 5 p.m. End the day with a drink at Z Bar and dinner at Shanghai Terrace at The Peninsula, which is close to my home. The views from Z Bar provide inspiring views of the city’s architecture and Michigan Avenue.

MINOTTI Daniels seating system redesigns living areas with new compositions, in which regular curves and ellipses interrupt the linearity of the layouts. When paired with the Amber low units, it creates a strong visual impact that passes seamlessly from the soft feel of the seats to the harder feel of the containers; and from more geometric shapes to an extraordinary combination of curves. minotti.com

While already established in the fashion world before arriving at the House of Chanel in 1983, it was Karl Lagerfeld’s 30-plus-year tenure at the helm of the French label that solidified his place in fashion history. The “more-is-more” attitude of the ’80s saw women dressing in bold patterns and figure-defining silhouettes, an attitude that’s seeing a resurgence today, where flaunting one’s personal style is celebrated more than ever.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS

ASH STREET INTERIORS Rosemary Wormley, owner and principal designer of Ash Street Interiors, offers this advice to ensure a painless design process: “Make sure you’re a good personality fit with your designer. Trust, communication and a shared sense of humor are keys to a strong designer-client relationship.” It’s advice she and lead designer Meredith Present deliver on when working with new or repeat clients. “We have a very collaborative approach and work hard to understand our clients’ design goals,” Wormley says. “Before we sign a contract, we encourage clients to share their personal style, how they want their space to function and how they want to feel when they walk into their home.” With a focus on high-end residential projects and out-of-state vacation homes for clients who live on the North Shore, Ash Street specializes in livable luxury, familyfriendly design. “Our interiors are a mix of clean lines, layered textures and calming palettes,” Wormley says. “We finish spaces with personal, playful and unexpected touches that infuse the home with the unique style and personality of the people who live there.” Since opening in 2015, the firm has experienced rapid growth, adding new construction homes and historic renovations to its portfolio mix, and building out a beautiful, new office space.

“ Our clients seek out our collaborative, relaxed approach and unique ability to make even the largest projects accessible and fun.”

SEASON for ENTERTAINING IN A CHARMING CHICAGO KITCHEN DESIGNED BY REBEKAH ZAVELOFF, A FESTIVE AMBIENCE SETS THE SCENE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DUSTIN HALLECK

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

Today, the kitchen is the main hub of the house, so set the scene with an oversize vase brimming with greenery. For this space, Devin Kirk, vice president of merchandising for Jayson Home, chose olive tree branches, which can last for weeks. Previous page: A gorgeous floral arrangement is a must when entertaining in your dining room. “It anchors the space, sets the tone and can be a great conversation starter, says Kirk, who styled the display with anemones, sedum, dahlias and magnolia branches in a generous white vase.

160 / LUXESOURCE.COM

For a row house renovation in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park, Rebekah Zaveloff’s clients requested one element straightaway: a woodburning fireplace in the kitchen. The family has a summer home in Vermont with an outdoor pizza oven and wanted to bring a similar vibe to this residence. Thankfully, Zaveloff, the designer and cofounder of KitchenLab Interiors, was completely on board. “It’s all about creating spaces that feel a certain way, evoke emotion or a sense of nostalgia,” Zaveloff explains. In this case, the homeowners desired a kitchen that would recall vacation all year long. kitchenlabinteriors.com The fireplace is such a defining feature. How did you decide on its placement within the kitchen? I know from working in old homes that adding fireplaces can be a very challenging undertaking. There is a lot to consider, including chimney size, structural issues, converting gas lines, ventilation and so on. Originally, we had designed the fireplace to go on the back wall between the windows but when we demolished the space, we found an old chimney in the corner and the location really ended up being a happy accident.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

Tell us about your approach to pattern. The patterned concrete floor tiles make the space here! In so many kitchens we incorporate wood floors, as people are nervous to commit to pattern, but the wood on wood can start to blend; it can be challenging to create contrast. Here, the tile adds a dose of drama but isn’t overwhelming. I did several versions of the design until we came up with something everyone loved with just the right balance of black and white. 162 / LUXESOURCE.COM

How is the dining room used? This space certainly changed once we opened it up to the kitchen. Before, the two rooms were separated by a large volume that housed a pantry and powder room; it felt choppy. Now, everything flows together nicely. So I decided to do away with dedicated dining, living and hall areas and instead put seating everywhere. I believe if you make spaces welcoming, people will use them!

Extra seating areas are always smart, and this cozy space in front of the fireplace houses Jayson Home’s Melrose Chair in spice velvet with a Siren Song pillow. Custom Villa Lagoon Tile, selected by designer Rebekah Zaveloff, decorates the floor.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

Think outside the box when it comes to the mantel. Fig branches provide an interesting pop of green while a marbleized teapot adds unexpected charm and a pretty silhouette. Few things are more important than good lighting and a scattering of candlesticks ensures the festivities will continue by candlelight, says Kirk.

LEAVE FORMALITIES AT THE DOOR: TODAY’S TAKE ON HAUTE HOSTING CALLS FOR INTIMACY, INDIVIDUALITY AND JOIE DE VIVRE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

LIGHTEN UP Silver polish, starched linens, seafood forks: Mercifully, such ceremony is no longer a must. As Luxe uncovers, it’s the entirely personal and surprising experiences that leave a lasting impression. Over the next few pages, designers and creatives weigh in on the conversation, encouraging us to pair heirloom dishware with bold linens and wild vines, to outfit guest rooms with raucous minibars, and by all means, to mingle beyond the bounds of the living and dining areas, as evidenced by this sumptuous yet laid-back music room by interior designer Heather Hilliard. Mind you, this “new” approach to fine entertaining isn’t so much new as a swinging of the pendulum: “Mrs. Astor was known for her infamous Midnight Suppers,” recalls event designer Rebecca Gardner. “These were intimate after-parties where she served ridiculously casual food like spaghetti and meatballs on her finest china. The beginning of high-low!” Take a page from the infamous socialite’s book, and toast to the season.

HISTORY REPEATS In Victorian-era England, drawing rooms were a prerequisite for any fine home, providing an elegant hub to “withdraw” for post-dinner merriment. Fast-forward a century and change, and the room’s intentionality is enjoying a renaissance, thanks to reinvigorated demand for defined entertaining spaces. Here, Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners adapted the concept on the parlor floor of a historic 1856 Chelsea townhouse, deftly eschewing any stuffy connotations in the process. “We reinterpreted the home’s original Italianate revival moldings into a more streamlined and proportionate version that still held the intended gravitas of the room,” explains Kevin Blusewicz, senior associate at Steven Harris Architects. Joined by convivial seating arrangements, a “discrete yet assertive” color scheme and impressively scaled new windows that bathe the room in sunlight, the grand bones appear to soften and relax. reesroberts.com

THREE A-LIST EVENT DESIGNERS SOUND OFF ON THE SIGNATURE PARTY TRICK THAT WILL KEEP GUESTS BUZZING.

REBECCA GARDNER

Founder and Creative Director, Houses & Parties Reimagine the classics. I like to set the table with my best pieces, most of which belonged to my grandmother, but I avoid being stuffy. The key is to be a little irreverent with anything fancy. One way to do this is to layer patterns on top of each other, like a floral Meissen dinner plate on top of a chintz fabric. I prefer big, luscious flowers that are just about to fall apart and unruly vines that twist around place settings. You can also repurpose: consider fingers bowls for ice cream sundaes and nut dishes for colorful candies. If you make the table a little wild and naughty, guests will behave accordingly. rebecca-gardner.com

SOLO SHOW

From industry galas to society weddings, a distinct pattern in floral design has emerged: single-bloom arrangements. Lush and unfussy, this shift is actualized by Poshan, a new Manhattan-based floral atelier. With Art Deco-inspired linen packaging and a mission of celebrating the singular beauty of rare varieties, Poshan has become a fast favorite of the fashion crowd. Here, founder Wu York shares his approach. poshanflowers.com Inspiration behind Poshan: I couldn’t find floral arrangements that I loved, so I created them. I use single flowers in powerfully simple arrangements, without any “filler” or greens. I base the overall sculptural shape on what’s available at the market each morning. Clients are asking for: English roses! And seasonal flowers, like tree peonies and fresh French lavender. Floral wisdom to live by: Less is more. Focus on quality flowers displayed in special, handmade vessels. People appreciate these two elements now more than ever.

Of course, this means keeping things tasteful and proportionate, but larger design elements will act as conversation starters and add energy to your event. When a room fills with people, many traditional touches, like linens, florals and candlelight, are ultimately obscured by bodies. Size makes a statement and we talk often about “shoulders and above” at my company. You always want a larger visual element that will live above the crowd! rafanellievents.com

I love a tableside surprise, especially around the holidays. colleenkennedycohen.com

SHAPE SHIFTER Lato x Lato, the design lab from architect couple Francesco Breganze de Capnist and Virginia Valentini, touts its debut collection as “inspired by Italian architectural heritage, reframed for a contemporary global aesthetic.” One look at the Vestalia candleholder and this ethos is rendered in clarity: What appears as a single slab of imperial green marble is actually a series of movable, hinged parts, a reference to 1930s Rationalist architecture. Boutique establishments brimming with personal touches and memorable amenities have fast become the new wave of luxury hotels. So, where could be a more prescient well to draw inspiration from for our own guest quarters this season? We turned to the riotously beautiful NOLA hot spot Maison de la Luz, designed by Atelier Ace and Studio Shamshiri, for a lesson in idiosyncratic design and Southern hospitality. maisondelaluz.com

⊳ DOWN TIME Thrice daily meals together can test even the dearest of friends and family, which makes the integration of a private guest nook for morning coffees or solo meals a bonus for all. Let Maison de la Luz’s intimate window adjacent seating areas, each equipped with loungefriendly seating and copper-topped “séance tables” etched in astrological motifs, remind that this setup can nest happily in guest accommodations of all shapes and sizes.

IN GOOD SPIRITS ⊲ Throughout the hotel’s 36 king rooms, a festive tone is set by the trading of nightstands for decadent bedside minibars. A selection of top-shelf libations— amongst them, Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whiskey and Ruinart Brut Rosé—sit atop a bespoke bar cabinet, which in turn encloses an artful collection of highball and champagne glasses. Brass ice buckets in the shape of a pineapple cheekily harken back to the hotel’s overarching design goal: moments of rebellion within the envelope of traditional hospitality.

▲ DETAIL ORIENTED When it came to conceptualizing the en suites, Studio Shamshiri principal designer Pamela Shamshiri “leaned into classic hotel iconography: waffle robes, incredible towels and all-stone bathrooms.” But luxuriant amenities extend beyond these focal details to smaller nuances of the bathroom design. Note, for example, the patinaed silver vanity set by Pigeon and Poodle and the merchandized curation of Grown Alchemist toiletries; chic and considered final flourishes for any guest setup.

DOUBLE ACT Litchfield, Connecticut-based architect and designer Julia Metcalf is not a fan of the phrase “she shed,” but admits it applies to this jewel box study, which moonlights as a chic cocktail lounge. “The client wanted a place to hide away, to work and to entertain in privacy,” says Metcalf. To welcome the addition of company, a traditional desk chair was replaced with a custom settee, and the Zuber wallpaper-clad bar area holds a rainbow of vintage glassware (sourced at the Brimfield Antique Show) set atop highgloss, piano-finish built-ins concealing a petite wine refrigerator. With the stashing of a laptop, the glamorous work space takes on the persona of an intimate speakeasy where only a chosen few gain admittance. juliametcalfdesigns.com

Rendered in jewel tones and adorned with birds and butterflies, the newest installment of wrapping paper from heritage brand Mrs. John L. Save the remnants and give in style all year long. mrsstrong.com

PERSONAL NARRATIVE FOR A MOUNTAINEER’S CHICAGO PENTHOUSE, A DESIGNER CRAFTS SPACES ATTUNED TO HER CLIENT’S PASSIONS. WRITTEN BY LISA BINGHAM DEWART / PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN MCDONALD

T

he first time designer Lauren Svenstrup met her client, mountaineer Alex Pancoe, he was standing on his coffee table. It was a defining moment, as it revealed her client’s adventurous, energetic spirit. This approach to life means things often need to happen quickly, as was the case when the pair met. Alex was leaving for a climb in a week and wanted to see a concept before he left. No small request, to be sure, but Svenstrup found the mountain climber’s energy contagious. “He drew me in,” she says, “and I accepted the challenge.” The following Monday, after a Saturday visit to his pad, she presented him with a full design scheme, which he approved while en route to a Chicago Cubs playoff game. A few things immediately stood out to the designer. Observing him, she noticed he was always in motion, so it was important that furnishings were able to “not only withstand his energy but encourage it,” she says. Adds Alex, “I’m a big pacer and rough on things.” Svenstrup also knew she had to acknowledge and celebrate her client’s passions, particularly mountaineering. Addressing his need for what they both cheekily call “an adult jungle gym,” the designer chose sturdy furnishings. “There is nothing fragile here,” she says. “I didn’t want him to be afraid of his home.” Her selections include a gnarled teak root coffee table (that’s strong enough to stand on) in the living room, a solid Chesterfield sofa, a generous Milo Baughman satellite chaise, and a curvy Pierre Paulin lounge chair. All upholstered in contract-grade fabrics,

“I USE ALEX AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW I WORK AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU’RE ON THE SAME PAGE.” –LAUREN SVENSTRUP

the blue on the Paulin and the purple on the chaise pay homage to two of Alex’s other great loves: the Cubs and Northwestern University. For a client who admits he “likes to chill in weird ways,” Svenstrup took advantage of the window seats around the perimeter of the unit, making them into stylish perches. “There’s no point in sitting by the window when you can actually be in the window,” she points out. One of these spots even forms the seating area of an intimate dining space. “Alex was never into the idea of a dining table,” says the designer, “so I approached the room as one large great room. I wanted to provide the option of a dining area, but I didn’t want it to feel like one.” Svenstrup cleverly wove in references to Alex’s life as a mountaineer in subtle and surprising ways. One of the first suggestions is a collection of nine 3D-printed sculptures just inside the main living area. On closer inspection, they represent the seven summits and North and South Poles that comprise the Explorers Grand Slam, which Alex just completed in June. Dark millwork meant to evoke the striations of a mountain in vertical form clads the wall housing the TV, and the hand-painted wallpaper on the ceiling suggests jagged peaks. A self-portrait of climber Cory Richards, shot just after he survived an avalanche, is a more explicit nod. “Alex wanted a monumental portrait that would encourage people to ask questions,” Svenstrup explains. Alex’s demanding, risky pursuit informed Svenstrup’s approach to the bedroom. That’s where she hung certificates marking his accomplishments, so it’s a place for reflection— and a spot for him to recharge upon his return to sea level. “When I’m not on mountains, it’s hard to be home,” says Alex. “When I come back, it’s nice to go to a sanctuary where I can relax, but not be separate from the places I’ve been and the things I’ve done.” There, the designer hewed to a palette of grays infused with lush texture but eschewed the bold notes of color she used elsewhere. Instead, from the pewter-hued Venetian plaster on the walls to the perforated metallic draperies that allow in light but maintain privacy and the ruched charcoal fabric on the bed, the effect is soothing and cocoon-like. Creating a home for an adventurer was an adventure in itself for Svenstrup. “I would dare to say it was the biggest one of my career,” she says. “He has been on a journey, and so have I.” And the final result isn’t just a home perfectly suited to Alex. The project allowed her to grow as a designer and businessperson. “I had his complete trust, and he embraced the design process, allowing me to curate his home,” she says. “I use him with other clients as an example of how I work and what happens when you’re on the same page.”

“The function of the foyer spills over to the console,” designer Lauren Svenstrup says of the custom table from Lagomorph Design. A collection of 3D-printed mountain peaks by TinyMtn on the wall signals the passion of her client, mountaineer Alex Pancoe. Covered in a Romo material, the Milo Baughman chaise “is a great place to sit and take off your shoes,” she adds.

Below: “It’s a Cubs bathroom without having to be blue,” Svenstrup notes of the powder room. Reflected in the mirror is a base from the team’s 2016 post-season run. E

very project is a co-creation,” observes architect Charles Stinson. There may be no better example of this than the lakefront home he and his team designed for a couple that had admired Stinson’s work for 25 years. The husband and wife brought on Stinson, builder Steven Streeter and an assembly of artists and craftspeople to make their dream home a reality. The result? A modernist abode clad with locally quarried limestone balanced by expansive steel-framed windows. A nod to Frank Lloyd Wright—“He was the first guy to compose rather than design,” notes Stinson—the rooflines cantilever over one another, shading the clerestory windows. “I imagined the home floating on the property,” says the architect. “This house was conceived by studying the property, where the sun was rising and setting, and the views.” Located at one of the highest points along the waterfront, Stinson says he wanted to create “a tower on the lake. Like a lighthouse.” To that end, as the owners walk from their single-story master bedroom—a cozy, neutral-toned escape overlooking the lake—to the main living areas on the opposite end of the house, the ceilings escalate in height, culminating in a rising tower that encompasses a family game area. The doorways are lower, however, and the kitchen is tucked into a light-filled niche. “It gives you a sense of shelter and comfort, but it also opens up and allows your spirit to soar,” Stinson says. “It’s a beautiful puzzle.” Indeed, the high-gloss olive wood kitchen cabinetry’s reveal lines up with the grout line in the stone walls, the placement of the figured eucalyptus moldings and the various ceiling planes. Even the height of the furnishings, which include several custom pieces in exotic woods by artist Thomas Schrunk—whom the husband has known

“LIGHTING IS A REALLY BIG DEAL. YOU’RE SETTING THE HOUSE UP FOR ROMANCE.” -CHARLES R. STINSON

since their college years—aligns with the reveals. “It all has a horizontal feel to it,” Stinson says. That also goes for the matching double-sided stone and hand-troweled plaster fireplaces that flank the expansive great room, and the sustainably made wool-and-silk Tibetan rugs by Stephanie Odegard, which define several distinct seating areas throughout the sprawling main level, adding instant warmth to the Crema limestone flooring. The owners met Odegard years ago, and she has made the rugs for three of their homes and become a close friend. Schrunck and Odegard are just two of many creatives with whom the couple has close relationships, and they commissioned several custom works specifically for their new home. In the foyer, a painting by Hessam Abrishami depicts part of the Odegard rug on the floor beside it, and a painting of birch trees by Giovanni DeCunto references the trees surrounding the house. When the sun sets, well-lit coves, illuminated reveals and discreet LED spots highlight the ceiling levels and architectural details, creating a warm glow throughout. The chandeliers, on the other hand, are statement-making pieces; for example, a long fixture with numerous shades that seems to float in the tower. “Lighting is a really big deal,” Stinson says. “You’re setting the house up for romance.” The cascading piece can be appreciated from both the exterior and the open upper-level lounge, which flows into a beautiful guest suite appointed with a bed, a pair of matching sofas in front of a stone fireplace, and an Eames lounge chair facing the water. When the large doors slide open, the space becomes an open-air sun porch with a commanding view of the lake and the landscape. Like the details of the interior, the landscape design by Shane Coen precisely aligns with the architecture: Two grassy lawns are framed by well-defined beds planted with rows of native grasses and limestone hardscaping, which includes a long walkway through an allée of birch trees to a waterfront patio atop the boat house. “Our philosophy is that the form of the landscape should be the same as the architecture and it should be in sharp contrast to the natural lines found in nature,” Coen says. “You can’t compete with Mother Earth, so our landscapes never pretend they’re like her.” Working with old friends and people they’d long admired made for a joyful experience for the owners, who are enjoying life in their new home to the fullest. During the summer, they watch sailboat regattas from the patio, and year-round the sunsets never fail to impress. Stinson, who also owns a house on the lake, shares their enthusiasm for the area. “It’s a wonderful summer lifestyle place,” he says. “It feels so good to be there.”

A blown-glass chandelier by Robert Kaindl illuminates the front foyer, where highgloss tropical olive wood paneling and Australian walnut moldings complement Vetter Stone limestone walls from Grant Barrette Co. and Crema Mason limestone floor tile from Thul Tile Company.

LUXESOURCE.COM / 219

D

ianna Frid has a thing for words. For the textile artist, it’s a curiosity built upon how letters and words can be interpreted—not just for their meaning, but also as material objects and drawings. This fascination manifests into an intersection of words and fiber. Be it through her “Text Textile” works, her “Words from Obituaries” series or her artist books, Frid communicates on multiple levels. While the examination of words is a common thread throughout Frid’s work, each project differs, as does her approach. “For the ‘Text Textile’ series, I start with a phrase that I want to transcribe through sewing,” she explains. “I create a structure around the words, drawing out certain geometric patterns. The larger ones require more improvisation, and they fulfill a desire to get into the messy space of not always having a plan.” The smaller pieces are not quite as improvisational but are still an emotional response to the letters. For “Words from Obituaries,” Frid borrows a phrase from a New York Times obituary. “For a long time now I’ve been reading the Times obituaries, which are pretty formulaic,” she explains. “I try to find something I can extract that makes sense but isn’t too familiar, or something that’s puzzling. It’s almost like excavating a text and seeing what I can find in it.” The phrases vary from humorous, like Enjoy My Philanthropy, to quirky, as in The Shape of A Spoon, and she eschews all spaces and punctuation. “For me these are drawings, in a sense, because I’m drawing each letter by hand,” she explains. “I’m making them fit within the parameters of a system.” Frid came up with the idea for the series while reflecting on a death in her family and concluding that it’s impossible to sum up a life. “They rarely tell you how a person died,” she explains. “I think they are about life, and not all lives are lived equally.” And it’s important, she adds, that the works aren’t morbid. In her artist books, Frid communicates with her audience on a deeply personal level. A bibliophile, her taste spans the novels of Mexican author Cristina Rivera Garza to the works of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. The work of Anni Albers influences the process of her books, which often feature letters sewn onto canvas and diagrams sewn onto photos. “There’s something about the tactility of them,” she says. “I touched every surface of them that people touch, so there’s already an established intimacy. Each book does a different thing for the viewer.” What Frid loves most is that her various works stretch her creative brain differently. “I like having an intention but not being owned by that intention, allowing for things to develop organically. The pieces that are less structured are much scarier to make,” she says, “and I need that.”

And her laundry room—a graphic kick of tile, equestrian art and oversize lanterns—looks like a Ralph Lauren window. “I knew I wanted for my own home what I encourage all my clients to have their homes speak to: things they love,” says Winters. “My passions are fashion, architecture and horses. I love hot pink. I also love black and white, camel and chocolate. So, I wanted it to be a sophisticated, grown-up house, but I also wanted it to have this fun energy and be a representation of me as a person.” That opportunity came unexpectedly. A buyer made an offer on her previous house, including nearly all the art and furnishings. (Like any sane designer, she drew the line at the Maison Jansen furniture and Fornasetti plates.) Not in any particular rush to find a new dwelling, she and her husband visited this residence—and Winters was instantly charmed. Situated a half block from Lake Michigan, it had a cupola and the distinguished style of a David Adler home. She fell for the architecture, particularly a structure that was once a stable. “That intrigued me,” she says. “I had not done any historic renovations for myself and it was a challenge, but it held such great potential for me as a designer to go to the next level.” Winters enlisted Susan Rolander as the architect of record and general contractor Voytek Sobolewski, with whom she has worked for eight years and calls “the construction key to all my projects.” The team took the place down to the studs, keeping only the door, one window, the original openings and the staircase. The rest was reconfigured and reimagined. Part of that reimagining came with a middleof-the-night bolt of inspiration to do a riff on Frank Gehry’s ribbon staircase. “I’m not a spindle staircase girl—I’m just not—and this is a nod to history while making it very me,” she says, noting the brass embellishments. The foyer walls were treated to black lacquered grass cloth, resulting in a dramatic first impression. For all her bold gestures, Winters has a deep love of classic principles—French antiques, timeless lines,

couturier details—and knows how to deploy them. The dining room expresses her timeless but effervescent approach; it’s a glamorous space where her Jansen pieces mingle with vintage water-gilt settees from Paris. Her beloved Fornasetti plates, a collection gathered over the course of 15 years, infuse dimensionality. Her brother and sister-in-law, who make custom frames, devised the chic acrylic displays that in themselves are architectural elements. Instead of tossing the original Fornasetti boxes, Winter stacked them and used water-gilt ball legs and acrylic risers to create cocktail tables. It’s an off-kilter move, like artist David Egan’s painted apple crates that she topped with acrylic and used as tables in the master. “I like clean lines and I love classicism, but I think it’s important to have personality,” the designer says. Like the fuchsia horizontal stripes that gussy up the eating area of the stylish, well-mannered kitchen: She had her wallpaper installer cut each one from grass cloth—an admitted challenge—then displayed a favorite David Drebin photograph. Winters infuses every room with much more beyond the “I bought this on holiday” narrative. Her husband’s office is a menswear suite dressed in a modern plaid—a reference to Scotland, where the couple honeymooned and go every year to golf. She also designed the quilted Hermès leather chairs in the living room. Fashioned with stirrups, they reference her time as a competitive equestrian. It all comes together in a deeply personal way that reiterates Winters’ design philosophy: “There is no sense in doing rooms without making them speak to who you are, what you love, and how you want to feel and live in your home.”

A Parisian salon in Lake Forest, the living room hosts Winters’ custom seating designs upholstered by Eli Wynn Upholstery. Two Lynn Basa encaustic paintings on wood panels above the sofas add a layer of texture, while Pelle overhead light fixtures amp up the glam.

“Presentation was key to making these plates feel like strong design elements on the wall,” explains Winters of her dazzling Fornasetti collection in the dining room. “Without the weight and details of those frames, the room would set a completely different mood.” Vintage French furniture anchors the space, which is surrounded by Stark natural grass cloth.

Holland & Sherry’s cashmere houndstooth plaid feels appropriate for the armchairs in her husband’s first-floor study. The Ico Parisi polyhedron bar was her gift to him. Circa Lighting pendants add to the classic clubroom air. The desk is a beloved vintage Maison Jansen piece.

Right: Schumacher’s flocked Mona wallpaper makes a statement in the powder room. Winters designed the Cloud vanity, mirror and hand-gilded gold Bubble Cloud fixtures. She also affixed Fornasetti plates to the wall to enhance the whimsical mood. Opposite: As opposed to the pale and neutral shades often used in master bedrooms, the designer chose Schumacher’s Iconic Leopard, for a look she calls “happy serene,” in her own sanctuary, complete with a silverleaf bed, bench and polished fixture, all by Ralph Lauren. David Egan’s painted apple crate in hot pink adds a touch of sass.
