EDITOR’S LETTER
W
ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”

Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

“BAUHAUS CHICAGO: DESIGN IN THE CITY” As part of the worldwide celebration of the Bauhaus centennial in 2019, an exhibition at The Art Institute of Chicago demonstrates how the city put its own mark on the iconic aesthetic. Following the closing of the German Bauhaus in 1933, leaders such as László Moholy-Nagy and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe brought the school’s ideals to the Midwest. “Bauhaus Chicago: Design in the City,” which opened in November and runs through April 26, shows how that movement took form throughout the region. It includes pieces from photography to sculpture to furniture from teachers and students such as Ludwig Hilberseimer, Elsa Kula, Nathan Lerner, Emmett McBain, Art Sinsabaugh and Angelo Testa, whose works helped shape design and architecture history at the New Bauhaus, which would later become the Institute of Design and the Illinois Institute of Technology. artic.edu
A LA CARTE Even in the dead of winter, Chicagoans can feel like they’re basking on the sun-kissed shores of Southern Europe (almost) during a meal at Kostali. With a name that means “coast” in Maltese, this 68-seat restaurant helmed by James Beard Award-winning chef Carrie Nahabedian (of Brindille and the now-closed NAHA) opened inside The Gwen hotel in late 2019. It’s a completely different concept from the chef’s previous restaurants, focusing on dishes from Greece, Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, with touches of the Middle East and North Africa. Tom Nahabedian, principal at Bureau | AD in Chicago and cousin to Carrie, designed Kostali to evoke feelings of relaxation, using vibrant shades of blue and gold paired with organic shapes and textures. Tom differentiated the entrance of the fi fth-floor space with brass-toned metal screens; inside, a nine-seat bar with an ocean-blue enamel lava stone top is a focal point, as are custom light fixtures of pale blue ribbed glass. “These bold strokes are offset by the intimate scale of it all, along with simple and modern detailing and materiality throughout,” he says. “It’s a true transportation to the Italian Riviera.” thegwenchicago.com/kostali 090 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSIDE LOOK KOHLER WATERS SPA
City dwellers no longer have to drive two and a half hours to Destination Kohler in Wisconsin or to Burr Ridge to bliss out at the legendary Kohler Waters Spa. The company opened its second location in Illinois at the new Lincoln Commons development last fall—and the 20,000-square-foot urban spa is as spectacular as you’d expect. The pièce de résistance is the mosaic hydromassage pool surrounded by a hydrotherapy circuit including a steam room, sauna and cool plunge pool. Twentyone treatment rooms, a manicure/pedicure room, hair salon, lounge and outdoor patio round out the offerings. “We understand the power of water’s ability to transform a person, and it is at the core of this spa’s design,” says Tim Andreas, director of architecture and interior design at Kohler Co. kohlerwatersspalincolnpark.com

ON THE HUNT BRIANNE BISHOP
Brianne Bishop first dreamed of being an interior designer when she was in second grade. “I used to take my parents’ shelter magazines, rip out pages of rooms that I liked and glue them to poster board as if they were floor plans,” she recalls. This April, Michigan-born Bishop will celebrate 10 years in business with her eponymous Chicago interior design firm—and while a lot has changed since then, much has stayed the same, too. Case in point: The first project she designed was her own black and white bedroom at age 11, and she admits to still loving that color scheme today. She and her husband are currently restoring a 140-year-old, three-level flat in West Town in an area many local interior designers have dubbed the Grand Design District. When she’s not working on her own projects, she loves playing with texture, contrast and scale to create dimension in clients’ homes. Artwork is one of her favorite ways to bring these into a room—and here, she shares with Luxe three local artists who help her accomplish this. briannebishopdesign.com
OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS
CLEVELAND DEAN “I consider him a dear friend,” says Bishop of Dean. “He had pieces of wood burned and preserved, and you hang them on the wall as sculpture. His art spoke to me more than any art I’ve seen in a long time.” imadeyoureadthis.com
FRANCINE TURK “We joke that we were separated at birth,” says Bishop, who bought one of Turk’s mixed-medium pieces containing an underlying poem about the future for her daughter’s second birthday. “When I purchase art I want to feel something from it, and Francine’s art does that for me.” francineturk.com
SARAH RASKEY Her first role is an art therapist, but Raskey’s incredible talent is her side business; she and her husband recently launched a lighting line as well. “She’s very innovative,” Bishop says. “I love her use of color.” sarahraskey.com

Danish home goods and furniture company Hay (755 W. North Ave., shown above and below) opened its third U.S. location in Lincoln Park this fall. As the first Hay to land in the Midwest, the 3,500-square-foot retail space proffers a wide selection of furniture, kitchenware, tabletop accessories and more, laid out in distinct vignettes to guide shoppers through the store. Among the most wanted modern pieces right now: sculptural Kaleido trays, striped cotton duvet covers and the curved triangle-leg table. The family-owned Home Carpet One (3071 N. Lincoln Ave.) celebrated its 50th anniversary with a $1.5 million remodel last fall. Owners Debbie and Joel Schreier enlisted Jonathan Splitt Architects to give the 15,000-squarefoot, bi-level showroom a modern look and feel. The overhaul united the store’s three existing historic buildings and made room for a new cabinet department (coming soon), adding to its wide selection of flooring (including carpet, hardwood, tile, stone, vinyl and rugs) for designers, builders, remodelers, realtors and homeowners.

⊳ RPM ON THE WATER No matter the season, Chicagoans love a good riverfront restaurant—and thanks to Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, they now have several new options. Architect David Rockwell of Rockwell Group is behind Pizza Portofino, which opened last summer, as well as RPM on the Water (a stunning venue for special events, including private dining) and RPM Seafood, opening this winter. All three natural light-filled establishments maximize their location on the Chicago River and take design inspiration from Italian and French seaside towns. In summer, glass folding walls will open the dining room at Pizza Portofino to the outdoor patio, allowing guests to enjoy cocktails alfresco. rpmrestaurants.com

BLVD CHICAGO ⊲ Step into BLVD and you’re transported to Sunset Boulevard in the 1950s. Karen Herold of Studio K Creative designed a timeless interior with the style and sophistication of the Art Deco and Hollywood Regency eras, drawing together sleek, angular curves with gold mirrors, rich metallic finishes and new age furniture. In line with the old Hollywood theme, the menu riffs on classic American dishes like shrimp cocktail, steak tartare and caviar service, along with a nostalgic cocktail list. blvdchicago.com
▲ FRANCOIS FRANKIE Chicago is now home to the nation’s second carousel bar (the first is at Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans), which makes a full rotation every hour. Interior design firm 555 International designed this spot in the Loop, where guests seated at the bar—enjoying an American brasserie menu—slowly revolve to take in the whimsical space. Lighting reminiscent of hot air balloons adds to the playfulness of the concept, while sophisticated, deep burgundy booths, wall murals and overhead mirrors round out the decor. francoisfrankie.com
⊳ ABOUT LAST KNIFE Nestled into the street level of Hotel Julian on Michigan Avenue, this steakhouse’s name is a play on the title of the classic movie About Last Night (set in Chicago). New York-based Workshop APD’s design evokes the industrial history of downtown while providing a sense of spaciousness to the building, which is less than 50 feet wide, by creating three distinct areas: a casual lounge, a sophisticated bar with glass and brass accents, and a dining room serving specialties like Beef Wellington by the slice and a delectable steak sandwich. alkchicago.com
⊳ BELLEMORE Everything about this West Loop New American restaurant is grand, from its soaring ceilings to the glass-backed bookcase to custom chandeliers, yet it’s meant to feel as cozy as your own home. Design firm Studio K Creative and Boka Restaurant Group designed Bellemore to reflect and complement the bold, beautiful cooking of chef Jimmy Papadopoulos, bringing the food to life in an environment that’s not just about a meal, but an experience. Bold, largescale floral designs bring the outdoors in, as do fanciful birds appearing in key art pieces throughout. Snag a plush velvet stool at the 24-foot, quartzite-topped bar to watch the expert mixologist in action. bellemorechicago.com 094 / luxesource.com

MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING
6
Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.
GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME
Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com
The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

Where the term “foosball table” tends to evoke grungy dive bars and fraternity basements, the 90° Minuto Foosball Table by innovative Italian brand Teckell provides a welcome—read: terribly chic—turning of the tides in gaming accessories. With a 12 millimeter-thick crystal playing field, polished stainless-steel goals and a solid Canaletto walnut frame, the playful rec room addition reads as much objet d’art as competitive distraction. Game on. artemest.com

CRAIG & COMPANY Bringing curiosity, rigor, expertise and an open mind to every project, Craig & Company crafts stunning architecture and interiors for residential and hospitality projects nationwide. With more than 25 years in the industry as the former partner of architecture and design firm, Lichten Craig, Joan Craig founded her new firm in January 2018. Craig is enjoying this next chapter in her career, with a new practice and offices in New York and Chicago. Fittingly, one of Craig’s most noteworthy projects had every ingredient for a dream collaboration. Her Upper East Side clients requested a modern home that paid tribute to their culture; one that captured memories of their childhood homes in India. “It was a complete renovation of a midcentury courtyard house that involved excavation below for a new pool, research on materials native to their homeland, and interiors that combined modern pieces with their Indian treasure trove,” she says. “We even designed rugs inspired by her mother’s saree collection.” While Craig revels in the beginning stages of the project ... “when everything is possible,” she says, “the absolute best times are the dinner parties with clients after move-in.”
Joan Craig Founder and Principal 312.321.7400 | 212.951.0350 craigandcompany craigandco.com
“A successful project is when there’s a strong sense of place and character, where the client is delighted, and the photo winds up on the cover of Luxe.”
Ask the Expert What is the next move for your firm? We all enjoy travel and would love to do more international work. What do you feel has been your greatest success? Building a culture and a team of dreamers and thinkers with insane expectations.

MORGANTE WILSON ARCHITECTS No two exemplify the phrase, “teamwork makes the dream work,” quite like Elissa Morgante and Fred Wilson. Architects with a shared love for all things design, Morgante and Wilson recently celebrated their firm, Morgante Wilson Architects’ 32nd anniversary. It’s a milestone the duo attributes not only to their partnership, but to those they develop with clients, consultants and their team. “It’s the reason so many of our clients work with us time and again,” Morgante says. Regarded for their whole-home approach, Morgante and Wilson draw from clients’ goals, but always with respect for the wider world in which we live. Hence, ecologically friendly building options and high-quality, energy-efficient options are often on the table. “We take a multifaceted approach to design, capturing our clients’ aesthetic and enhancing the way they live,” Wilson says. Not surprisingly, they accomplish this through a collaborative effort: Morgante thinks of a home from the inside out, while Wilson looks at it from the outside in. “It’s an approach that allows simultaneous contribution to each layer of the project and delivers a unified look,” he continues. Both work comfortably in a multitude of styles, but if they had to name just one, “It would be transitional,” they say. A perfect blend; just like this husband-and-wife team.

“ We love engaging with people who think about design in a holistic sense, resulting in the most beautiful and functional home possible.”

Ask the Expert What elements characterize your work? Light, balance and texture. Milestones in your firm’s success? The addition of our interior design division is a natural extension of the firm’s expertise in residential architecture. It has grown to become a huge part of our business, expanding the richness and scope of the firm’s portfolio, while providing a valuable add-on service to clients. In addition to residences, it now encompasses hospitality and commercial interiors, as well as the interior design of high-end model apartments, consulting on unit finish packages, and overseeing the interior architecture and design of common areas and amenity spaces.

HOME BUILDERS + REMODELERS
TIP TOP BUILDERS When dependability, responsibility, quality control and a positive attitude characterize a firm’s work, it’s hard to go wrong. Enter, Tip Top Builders, the third-generation general construction company with over 55 years in business. What began in 1963 as a small remodeling firm has grown over the past five-plus decades to specialize in the new construction, remodeling and renovation of high-end custom residential projects, including high-rise condominiums. In fact, it was the firm’s conversion of the McCormick mansion on Astor and Burton into nine condominiums that put the firm on the proverbial design map. Working for owners of stores and businesses in the beginning years, Tip Top found its residential footing when the same owners began looking for someone to do the same quality work on their personal homes. Through word of mouth, its residential portfolio grew quickly. In addition to its general contracting services, Tip Top provides construction management, carpentry, a service division, and a well-versed, diverse management team that draws from its wide variety of experiences. “Whether a small addition, selective remodeling or the complete construction of a custom home from the ground up, we live and work by our philosophy: To always bring the highest quality for the best value,” says vice president Adam Masters.
Adam Masters Vice President 847.679.5010 tiptopbuilders.com
“ Our creative process comes from the extraordinary architects and designers we work with. Their talent and visions make our projects true works of art.” 1
Ask the Expert Define luxury? Making a wish list reality. What style is your firm most known for? Whatever our team members dream, we enjoy building. To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success and why? Clients’ satisfaction.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS
DONNA MONDI INTERIOR DESIGN Transitioning to a new market can be a big challenge. But not for designer Donna Mondi, who went from being relatively unknown to placing on top interior design lists in Chicago. “Our first project in the No.9 Walton building was instrumental in establishing a strong presence here,” she says. “This one project led to seven more in the same building, not to mention the relationships we developed in the process.” Donna Mondi Interior Design’s signature style marries European sophistication with modernity. “We produce avant-garde, bespoke interiors that reflect our clients’ lifestyle and taste. The end result is a livable space punctuated with texture, color, material and art sourced from around the world,” says Mondi, speaking to her curated travels. Paris, Rome and London often top her list, but a recent trip to Tokyo, she says, enhanced her awareness of functional spaces with design that predicts a person’s next move. While Mondi and her team stay true to the owner’s vision, they are known for pushing the envelope, to a point. “Once the concepts are approved, our team takes over and manages the project through installation. In situations where clients want to be involved, we take them on gallery visits or even buying trips,” she says, always welcoming the next adventure.
Donna Mondi President 312.291.8431 donnamondiinteriordesign donnamondi.com
“ We don’t just source nice furniture … we create interiors with soul.”
Ask the Expert What is the next move for your firm? Expanding and developing markets outside Chicago. I developed a furniture collection called EnVie in 2018, and have begun working on a second one inspired by architecture. Can you provide key milestones in your company’s success? DMID opened a second location in an 1890s manufacturing plant that has since been named one of Chicago’s Coolest Offices 2017. We also launched a day-long ‘Design Camp’ to mentor up-and-coming industry talent, and received our seventh ASID Design Excellence Award.

“ Our towns aren’t cookiecutter, so you need an experienced agent who knows the backstory, location and more.”
Ask the Expert What must-have features are local buyers looking for in a home? Most people are coming from new condos or town houses in the city, so they want a new kitchen when moving into a house. Redoing a kitchen is a process, so if sellers can update or renovate one, it’s a must today. What are your favorite places to eat, drink and shop locally? I love Nabuki for sushi, Fuller House for brussels sprout salad, and I always find gorgeous outfits and specialty pieces at Sweet William women’s boutique. What is your favorite weekend getaway? I love to visit our kids at school for a quick weekend. It has been so fun getting to know their friends and hanging with these young minds.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
HOLLANDER DESIGN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS “Every landscape has a story to tell. We define that story by paying attention to three ecologies: your site’s natural ecology, its architectural program and its human ecology—the ways in which you will use your property.” This from Edmund Hollander, the president behind Hollander Design Landscape Architects. That focus on client, architecture and site is how he and his firm design properties that, as so many clients have professed, “instantly feel like home.” It’s feedback they’ve received regarding contemporary, modern and traditional projects alike. “It all comes down to conceiving of house and grounds as a whole,” Hollander says. “We want you to feel a sense of ‘home’ from the moment you step onto your land.” Based in New York City with offices in Chicago and Sag Harbor, Hollander Design works primarily on residential and cultural projects, across the country and beyond. Most recently, Hollander and his team have completed work on The Kennedy Center’s REACH campus in Washington, D.C., for which they collaborated with architect Steven Holl. That sort of creative partnership is something Hollander values highly. “We’re always eager to work with architects, interior designers and homeowners who want to establish a real relationship between the indoors and out.”

What are some of the ways clients can work with trade professionals for a painless design process? Team collaboration, communication and listening are key to a successful design process.
SCOTT BYRON & COMPANY “Technology is helping us do our jobs better, but there’s no substitute for the personal relationships we cultivate with clients and collaborators,” says Gary Topalian. As the senior landscape architect for Scott Byron & Company, “cultivate” is the operative word. Rooted in Chicagoland since 1983, Scott Byron & Company collaborates with architects, designers and builders in Illinois and nationally on projects, ranging from very complex $3 million estate landscapes to $20,000 garden renovations. “Our work beyond the Chicago region is rapidly expanding, as clients request us for their second homes,” Topalian says. What first began with founder Scott Byron’s work at the Chicago Botanic Garden decades ago, including a collaboration with top London landscape architect John Brookes, has blossomed into a staff of 250 whose focus is that the landscape design, the site, the architecture, the home and the outdoor garden rooms come together harmoniously. “Although not known for a specific style—some are formal, others more organic and informal—we are known for inventively solving site challenges,” Topalian says. In fall of 2017, Scott Byron & Company was selected to create an entirely new garden for the Chicago History Museum. “We hope to break ground in spring of 2021 and envision more of these kinds of projects,” he says.

L
iving through a major home renovation is never easy, even for the most laid-back homeowner. But interior designer Amy Kartheiser’s clients Rahul and Natalie Danak are an exception to the rule. They maintained a Zen-like calm as Kartheiser reimagined their brick-clad, three-level Lakeview abode, which had a dated, early-aughts look. “Natalie never got flustered,” Kartheiser recalls. “Even though the house was a chaotic mess, it felt serene.” This was a good omen, because serenity was exactly what Natalie, a mixed-media artist and feng shui adherent, wanted for the space. While she describes herself as freespirited—even bohemian—Rahul pictured a simpler, more modern vibe. The couple asked Kartheiser to marry their styles in a harmonious way. “When you see balance, you feel balanced,” Natalie says. The palette was inspired in large part by Natalie’s artwork, which she had modestly kept out of sight, piled in a spare bedroom. But Kartheiser convinced her to bring it out of hiding. “I’m a crafty artist hoarder,” laughs Natalie. “I don’t like to put a lot of my stuff out, but Amy encouraged me to do this.” Invigorated by Kartheiser’s support, Natalie even took it a step further and created a custom piece for above the new limestone fireplace mantel. In fact, the entire design of the living room was planned around making her art pop. “I like a negative background, so that the art and furnishings speak for themselves,” says Kartheiser. A round-back gray sofa and curvaceous blue swivel chairs—all covered in velvet—surround a lacquered cocktail table with a pearlescent sheen that also eschews straight lines. “Even though the colors are cool, we made it feel warm and cozy by layering all these different textures,” Kartheiser says, noting that the curves likewise juxtapose the room’s sharp edges. The use of texture continues in the adjacent open dining area, where a three-tiered, coco-beaded chandelier softly illuminates the space. Below one of Natalie’s triptychs, a white buffet with doors carved in a sinuous pattern adds an artistic touch that spoke to Natalie straightaway. “The embossed and carved doors have interest,” says Kartheiser. “She loved that artistic detail.” In between the living and dining room, a Moroccan-style light fixture hovers over the piano. Drawn to the room’s new vibe, the couple’s three children are using the area more than they have in years. “It’s calling everybody to go there, relax and create,” Natalie says. “It’s added this whole new energy to the house.” That’s also true of the great room, where a neutral rug frames a sectional sofa in

front of a media cabinet with brass grated doors that was inspired by a brass overhead light. A round cocktail table balances the room’s linear dimensions. The space faces the open kitchen, which Kartheiser completely reimagined with new cabinetry and quartzite countertops. A steel hood with brass accents complements the nickel hardware. “Natalie doesn’t mind mixing metals,” Kartheiser notes. That vibe extends to the bathrooms. In the powder room, a gold floral wallcovering enlivens a clean-lined brass vanity with a marble sink, perfectly blending Rahul and Natalie’s styles. And in the master bathroom, a floral-like pendant softens the room’s grid-like marble wall tile. Over the floating walnut vanities, a pair of black steel mirrors with leather straps adds another layer. “Natalie loves the combination of different elements, so that her home is not the same as everyone else’s,” Kartheiser says. There’s little chance of that being the case. Even the front door is stained a golden hue for good luck, another tenet of feng shui. The couple is thrilled with the way Kartheiser seamlessly balanced their respective styles, and the result has been a big hit with their three children as well. “The kids bring a lot of friends over now, and we’ve been having a lot more dinner parties,” Natalie says. The design refresh is also paying off when it comes to Natalie’s artistic endeavors, she reports: She will soon be hosting receptions to showcase her colored-ink-on-rice-paper series and a new line of vases. “I’ve always wanted to host those kinds of events here, but I didn’t think the space reflected my style,” Natalie says. “Amy did a great job making this our dream house.”

A
traditional home filled with crystal chandeliers and lush furnishings may feel like an unexpected choice for a young family with a baby on the way. Yet that was Camie and Joon Park’s vision when they moved with their 10-year-old son into a sweeping single-family home tucked away in the trendy Bucktown neighborhood. With clearly defined rooms and dramatic 12-foot ceilings, “The home is formal in terms of architecture,” notes designer Dan Rak, to whom the couple turned to balance their desire for elegance and a family-oriented home. “It’s a very square, right-angle kind of house.” The couple fell in love with the property’s classical proportions and unique materials, such as the reclaimed brick veneer floors in the kitchen. “It’s a very Chicagospecific material, so we knew we wanted to let that detail shine,” says the designer. When it came to the decor, however, the family was mostly starting from scratch. “We added a ton of wallcoverings and decorative lighting that took a very basic envelope and personalized it,” says Rak. Camie and Joon gravitated toward pieces that felt equally as classic as the home, so the design, Rak says, “needed to embrace the architecture without sacrificing the livability of the house.” Preserving the traditional layout, Rak balanced form and function by dedicating more formal spaces to the front of the home, while the rear is geared toward more casual, familyoriented living. Delineating these zones for play became essential once the couple’s newborn daughter arrived in the middle of the design process. “We wanted to allow each space to serve whatever its intended audience needed,” he explains. “They were okay with not having every room be kid-friendly as long as the house served their family overall.”
“WE WANTED EACH SPACE TO SERVE WHATEVER ITS INTENDED AUDIENCE NEEDED.” –DAN RAK
LX_CH58_HOM_Rak_10.indd 246
Rak invited some grandeur into the front living room with modern twists on decorative motifs, from the silvery patterned area rug to the subtly striped wallpaper framing the marble fireplace. The softly curved silhouettes of the couch and accent chairs also add a note of gentility. A gilded chandelier with crystal accents provides a crowning touch that helps play up the formality of the room and occupy the volume of the space. In contrast, plush performance fabrics carved out cozy intimacy in the rear family room, featuring an L-shaped sectional perfect for curling up by the fire and a velvety area rug where the baby can claim her own playful domain. A generous upholstered ottoman centers the space, providing that perfect “throw-up-your-feet moment,” says Rak. “This room is where they are going to spend most of their time, so we made sure that we did all soft edges, in textiles that would stand up to heavy use from the kids.” A timeless palette of creamy neutral hues provides seamless continuity from the formal to the familial. “All the rooms open up to one another, so we wanted to keep these spaces feeling consistent,” notes the designer. At the heart of the home, however, Rak departs from this airiness for a little more drama in the deep gray dining room. The space “gets the least amount of natural light in the home,” he explains. “So we decided, as opposed to fighting to make it this light and bright room it was never going to be, we would let it become a more moody space.” Topped by an expansive tray ceiling, the large dining area also required pieces with decorative heft, achieved with the couple’s massive mixed-media piece by Colleen Sanders— a friend of Joon’s since high school— and another glittering crystal chandelier. Grounding the space is a grand dining table, a special request from the couple. “They’re big on entertaining, so they wanted to maximize how many people they could get around the table for the holidays.” Additional unconventional color cues and patterns continue in more private realms of the home, where “we could take a little more liberty with bolder strokes,” says Rak. These notes come courtesy of romantic botanical wallpaper prints: jewel-hued hummingbirds in the powder room, climbing blossoms in the master bedroom, and pastel butterflies in the nursery. “These are in an overall traditional style but with a contemporary take,” the designer points out. Filled with these genteel details, room by room the project marked a refreshing refocus on what a home can look like for a young family. “I feel like everything today is becoming really casual, which I love,” says Rak. “But this house called for a very classic style of decoration. It was exciting to get to do that and to be a part of seeing their family grow.”
11/18/19 11:51 AM
The formal living room was inspired by the couple’s grayscale artwork by Susan Hill. “We pulled the subtle, steely tones of that piece into the space,” says designer Dan Rak of the pearly handwoven rug from Oscar Isberian and the monochrome Dômiers wallpaper by Nina Campbell that frames the fireplace. The chandelier from Cai Designs adds a touch of gold.

Right: “There are really distinct rooms in the house,” explains Rak of the home’s layout. Areas such as the bar, which is cerused white oak topped with Calacatta marble, “became an adult zone, where we could embrace the formal architecture a little bit more without sacrificing the overall livability.” Opposite: Embracing the kitchen’s original materials, like the reclaimed brick flooring, “We wanted to find that balance between the rustic and the polished,” notes Rak. “We like the tension it creates.” Barstools by Palecek add a contemporary note, while the Renwick large sphere chandelier by Aerin infuses a moment of glamour.

Left: To soften the right-angle formality of the living room, Rak favored pieces that have a gentle curve, like the genteel Bolier sofa and the Bernhardt swivel armchair. The geometry of the Theodore Alexander coffee tables adds a subtle contrast to the curves. Opposite: The couple envisioned the dining room as “a big, central feature where they could host for the holidays, recalls Rak. So the designer focused on large-scale pieces made for entertaining, like the dining table from Robert James and Theodore Alexander chairs. Above it, a chandelier by Niermann Weeks adds to the celebratory grandeur.

Below: The home’s refined materials continue in the master bathroom, featuring neutral stonework and natural wood finishes that are accented by a shimmering cut-glass Hudson Valley light fixture with an aged brass finish.

VEHICLES of COLOR WHEN IT COMES TO DIANA GUERRERO-MACIÁ’S PHILOSOPHICAL ARTWORKS, PAINTING IS A RELATIVE TERM. WRITTEN BY MIKKI BRAMMER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN

T
he easiest way to begin a piece of art, mixed-media artist Diana Guerrero-Maciá says, is to ask a question. “Can slowness blossom? Is a rainbow a picture? Can a symbol devour us? I start with either a poetic thought or a rumination on a color and then expand it into something,” she says. Those resulting “somethings” are what GuerreroMaciá calls hybrid paintings, created using textile collage. Her childhood love of the beauty of Robert Rauschenberg’s collage works sparked her first foray into the medium, but, as an adult, it’s the psychology behind it that fascinates her. “Collage holds a strong direct relationship to the world a person lives in,” she explains. “Gathering materials can reveal our consumption—it talks about the market, the experiences and access. Putting things together from these different sources is a complex system of aligning my understandings of histories and lived practice.” Her hybrid paintings often comprise used materials—a U.S. Army blanket, a woman’s coat— as well as leather, silk, vinyl, wool, corduroy and wood, brought together via myriad techniques including quilting, sewing and chine-collé. Certain works also feature functional objects, such as a set of seating inspired by a child’s color wheel. Though she studied painting at Cranbrook Academy of Art and Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Guerrero-Maciá admits that she never thought of herself as a painter. In fact, she found herself using everything but paint to make paintings. “I was working with deconstructed clothing, cutting clothes apart, flattening them, and piecing them back together by hand, as a way to sort of expand the materiality of painting,” she says. “That practice led me to thinking about painting being a verb and looking for materials that I could construct a picture with.” The point, she
LX_CH58_SM_GuerreroMacia_4.indd 256
adds, is that painting isn’t necessarily about paint itself, but about being a vehicle for color. Whether it be through color, symbols, graphics or words, Guerrero-Maciá purveys narratives that often reference historical or cultural periods. From medieval millefleur tapestries to modernist sculptures and cowboy culture, she seeks to find a through line between old and new. “I’m interested in millefleur tapestries because they have a vast interlocking interpretation of history,” she explains. “They use these networks of symbols and are often simplified. So I’m kind of curious about how I can reinterpret that in a 21st-century idea.” Currently, Guerrero-Maciá, who is an associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is working on a new series of hybrid textile paintings for a solo show at Carrie Secrist Gallery. “People come up to me and confide in me, saying, ‘Oh, your work is beautiful, but it’s really smart.’ They say the word ‘beautiful’ like it’s bad,” she laughs. “But I think my work shares the joy of color, form and material. I certainly hope it translates to people in that way.”

e knew this would be our forever house, where the grandkids could run and play,” says the wife, of her family’s suburban Chicago home. Spoken like a true empty nester—except she’s not one quite yet. But there’s something to be said for what she describes as “projecting forward.” Though several years away from having grandchildren—their four kids range from preteens to teenagers—these clients already know what they’re going to want in their later years. It wasn’t just the future that factored into the couple’s decision to build a new home. Their former residence, which was located only one block away, consisted of a series of small, formal rooms—an awkward layout for an active family. So the clients turned to residential designer Paul Konstant, whose coastal aesthetic they had long admired. “Everything he does feels like it should be next to a body of water,” the wife says of Konstant’s signature style. “We really wanted this open-air plan where the six of us could be in different areas of the house but still see one another.” Konstant, along with general contractor Scott Rosett, took the owners’ wish list and gave them an interior that, although somewhat defined, feels very open. Vaulted ceilings, hand-scraped plank floors and shiplap on the walls all nod to the vibe the couple desired. “She was very disciplined and organized,” Konstant says of the wife’s guiding directives. “I like that.” She also knew what she wanted when it came to the interiors, which is why she brought on designer Andrea Goldman. “I had seen a lot of her work,” the wife says. “I had done my research, and when I met her I had an instant feeling of confidence that she was the person we were going to work with.” Goldman is known for her calm, neutral interiors, but she also enjoys using a deeper color scheme in at least one or two areas in the house “where the space feels a bit more like a cocoon,” as she puts it. The husband’s office, distinguished by gray flannel wallpaper and bold, graphic art over the fireplace, is a clear example. Where not shiplap, walls throughout are covered with wallpaper, imparting subtle texture. “We tried to make certain that, even though the wall surfaces are quiet, you kind of want to walk up and touch them,” says the designer. “You can tell there’s something going on—it’s not just paint.”

The breakfast area is graced by an abundance of natural light and manages to seat all six family members comfortably. It’s also a favorite spot for the family’s dog, Zoe.

If there is any flight of fancy amidst this sea of tranquility, it’s the lighting. “More than any other element in this house, the light fixtures are where we kind of pushed things to be more fresh and even contemporary,” Goldman says. She went with a mixture of dark and white fixtures to add a little oomph without disturbing the overall peace. “We really wanted the lights to not in any way compete or conflict with what was happening, of course,” says the designer, “but they are fun. We didn’t want boring.” For the wife, the kitchen area easily ranks as one of her favorite parts of the house, with its spacious seating area and, most importantly during those long, cold Chicago winters, a fireplace that is going six months out of the year. The design team gave the kitchen comfort and style; the family gives it life. “My kids come home and they plop down in those chairs and I feel like I get so much more time with them,” says the happy mom. “They don’t feel the need to go up to their rooms.” Nearby family members, including both sets of in-laws, frequently help populate the space. “I love that I can have everybody over and we never have to leave the kitchen,” the wife says. If they do leave the room, they’re likely headed to the enclosed back porch. “It’s like a second family room for them,” says Goldman. The space looks out on the pool and pool house, which sing in harmony with the greens, whites and pinks of landscape architect Sara Furlan’s designs. Furlan brought in hydrangeas—a favorite of the clients—justicias, a few roses and a selection of yew evergreens, while autumn moor grass and vinca cover the ground. “They wanted to really feel like their everyday house is a retreat,” says Goldman of the clients. “With their busy schedules, they can’t get away often. So they wanted a home where they could live well year-round.” Which is exactly what the team gave them.

“We like to introduce color through art, on pillows or with small upholstered pieces, Goldman says, such as with the blue chairs covered in a Zak+Fox fabric. A sisal rug helps delineate the space, with a custom table and chairs by Andrea Goldman Design. The overhead lighting fixture is by Gregorius Pineo.

Opposite: Goldman used a gray flannel wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries to set the tone in the secluded study, which features a Stark rug and a ceiling fixture by The Urban Electric Co. Goldman designed the desk and the armchair, which is upholstered in Theo Fabric. Below: “We wanted that contrast of dark and light, Goldman notes of her design concept. The entry, which includes a custom bench by Formations as well as an Andrea Goldman Design custom table and framed artwork, provides a glimpse of this approach. The overhead lighting by Lindsey Adelman is the first in a series of eye-catching light fixtures appearing throughout the house.

Chairs from Lee Industries with striped pillows from C&C Milano flank the fireplace in the master bedroom. The bed is from Bernhardt Furniture; bed linens are from Boll & Branch. Above it all hangs a Bamboo Cloud chandelier by Roost.

A custom bench—by Andrea Goldman Design with George Spencer Designs—adds a soft burst of color to the predominantly white master bath. Countertops are Calacatta gold, with sinks and faucets by Toto. The Oscar Isberian rug lends softness to the space.

Opposite: The pool area offers a relaxing counterbalance to the family’s active lifestyle. “Our life is so chaotic all the time,” the wife says, “that we really wanted our home to feel peaceful and quiet.” The RH dining table is surrounded by Blu Dot chairs. The lounges are from Ledge Lounger. Below: “It’s really calming,” Goldman says of the back porch, with its view of the pool and the much-appreciated privacy backdrop of mature trees. “Except for the winter months, the family is out there all the time.” The space features a fireplace, lounge seating and an eating area where meals are enjoyed around the RH table.
