EDITOR’S LETTER

FURNITURE A Love Story
My first furniture crush was a Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Chan coffee table, which I spied in the home of my great uncle at the tender age of 9. I stood in awe, taking in its patinated bronze, pewter and enamel village scene and octagonal bronze base with blue-enamel inserts. That table certainly kicked off my deep affection for all things decorative... and quite possibly nudged me toward my future career. Philip and Kelvin were father-and-son creative collaborators who fashioned exceptional art pieces that were incorporated into furniture. Their dedication to craft and original design is something to be admired. This issue of Luxe is our love letter to furniture, and those tenants that we value most— craftsmanship, collaboration, originality and heritage. When you’re next out shopping for furnishings to add to your home, make it something special that’s created with great care and attention—a piece that may even impress a curious 9-year-old.

Where is that Chan table today? It sits handsomely in my father’s living room. I still have my eyes on it… this heritage piece of art that helped shape a life.

Golden TOUCH
Nearly two centuries into business, each Rinck design still begins with a hand drawing, as seen in the walnut and nickel armchair (shown), a star of the new contemporary collection. “At a time of disposable consuming, we need to go back to made-to-last products with meaning,” says Vice President Valentin Goux.
WITH ITS NEW CONTEMPORARY COLLECTION, RINCK CELEBRATES A SINGULAR LEGACY OF HANDICRAFT.
Amidst the bustle of Paris’s 12th arrondissement sits an iconic atelier and within it, a trove of hand drawings dating back 180 years. Spanning styles from Napoleon III to Art Nouveau and Louis XV, Rinck’s design archive is an unwitting history of French furniture. In the age of iCloud storage and CAD renderings, the monumental collection presents an anomaly, but then, so does the company it chronicles. A true ensemblier décorateur, Rinck is the only French furniture and fabrication company still designing and manufacturing in-house today. Its eponymous watercolors and coated paper sketches are the first indication of an emphasis on touch-of-hand that guides each creation from seed idea through finished product—an ethos echoed in its outposts and reverberated by leadership. Notes Valentin Goux, the second-generation vice president of the family-run firm, “We believe our designers need to be able to draw to understand proportion and scale, and that’s not about to change. Artistic drawings are still of utmost importance.” With three ateliers—one in Ardennes dedicated to cabinetmaking and one in Drôme for boiserie and millwork, in addition to the Paris design headquarters—Rinck’s specialties run the gamut from marquetry, veneers and gilding, to latticework, ornamental carving and trompe l’oeil. Employed throughout the workshops is a network of master craftspeople, some disciples of classic cabinetmaking schools and others from Les Compagnons, the Medieval-rooted, UNESCOprotected group of artisans who train in the field in towns across France. With design and build talents under the same roof, each piece becomes a dynamic meeting of the minds. “Once we get to prototyping, the designers work with the craftsmen weekly to refine the designs and make them perfect,” shares Goux. While Rinck’s intimate, tactile approach stands as testament to handcrafted tradition, the company is ever looking forward in both execution and creative vision, evidenced by its sleek new contemporary collection—the first modern ensemble in 50 years. Spurred by an off-the-cuff conversation over a team lunch, a beloved 1930s sycamore table was unearthed from the archives, in turn inspiring a full dining room suite of table, armchairs, side chairs, console and sconces. Edging on modernist in gleaming French walnut and black nickel, a dash of Rinck’s token classicism is still evident in the foliateembossed velvet upholstery. “It’s very 19th century, but in a fresh way,” notes Goux. “These are the kind of pieces you keep for generations.”

It Takes TWO ARTIST SUSAN HABLE REFLECTS ON HER LONGTIME PARTNERSHIP WITH HICKORY CHAIR. AS TOLD TO MICHELLE BRUNNER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRICK HEAGNEY
Ten years ago, our family pulled up stakes, left New York City, and settled in Athens, Georgia. At the time, the economy was in peril, and we wondered: How are we going to refocus our textile brand, Hable Construction, and deal with the changes? Simultaneously, Hickory Chair was looking for new ways to innovate. The timing was right, so we came onboard to create its first designer fabric collection. We had been making textiles for a few years, but to grow as a company, we knew we had to expand—and I thought we should try creating a furniture collection. My sister and business partner, Katharine, and I love to see the inner workings of things. That curiosity is at the core of everything we’ve done. I knew furniture would be no different.
I always think of the saying, “ask for what you need,” which is such a good reminder in life. Positive things have come out of transition periods for us. Hickory Chair was nearing its 100th anniversary in business, and wanted to keep pushing forward. (I think that’s the key to its success.) In 2015, we launched our first furniture collection, and with it, I tried to create foundation pieces that we could add to later. I approached it like building a house—after all, if the bones aren’t good, what’s the point? We’re now on our third collection, and when I look at it, I see a range of influences: Scandinavian, Italian, Shaker and American Primitive, to name a few. The pieces are layered and unpredictable. As I get older, I think about how my home reflects who I am and the places
I’ve been. There are stories in every piece. It’s not just furniture to me. I wasn’t trained as a textile or furniture designer. My work started because I’m a fine artist. The only way my sister and I knew how to commercialize my artwork was to turn drawings into patterns and patterns into textiles and then make products. That fine art connection shows in the new hand-painted pieces for Hickory Chair. Whatever custom finish you dream of, the company can do. Relationships are everything in this business and the partnership with Hickory Chair has been one of equal give and take—you can feel that with the people and see it in the craftsmanship. If we artists can collaborate with companies that are thoughtful in the same ways we are, it makes it all worthwhile.

LIAIGRE’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR FRAUKE MEYER ON CREATIVITY AND THE VALUE OF ORIGINALITY. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL
If there is one piece that encapsulates Liaigre’s polished yet independent spirit, it is the brand’s sculptural Nagato stool inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s “Endless Column.” The iconic work, originally created by Christian Liaigre in 1986 from a solid piece of oak, was recently reinvented in a limited-edition bronze with a smooth black patina and wood print—a look that is at once brutalist and refined. “We rarely draw from our archives, and privilege fresh creative reflection for each project. Yet this piece combines minimalism and poetry, elegantly entering the domestic sphere,” says Liaigre’s Creative Director Frauke Meyer. As with the refreshed Nagato stool, independent thinking has been at the core of every piece since the company’s inception in the 1980s—and that’s what defines Liaigre. “My aim is to emphasize our French and Parisian identity, in which everything is well thought out, structured and finished, while still encouraging disruption, surprises and a break from the expected,” says Meyer, who likens the brand’s creative process to that of iconic fashion houses, such as Dries Van Noten, Azzedine Alaïa and Pierre Hardy. “We believe beauty is found through special attention
LX_COM30_Radar_Originality.indd 84
“It is important to interpret designs to fit into the context of current times,” says Liaigre Creative Director Frauke Meyer, an approach evident in pieces such as the Orient Suspension lamp (top, left), Touareg bench (center) and recently reissued bronze Nagato stool (bottom, right).
to ergonomics, usability and the touch and feel of materials exuding texture, comfort and luxury.” Unmoved by imitation designs, Meyer says it is the company’s strict attention to detail and proportion that set it apart. “The creation of each Liaigre design requires skill from expert hands,” says Meyer. “Whether brushed, sandblasted wood or full-grain leather tanned in France, the mastery of the craft is present throughout the production of each piece or architectural element.” A case in point is Liaigre’s lacquered panels and furnishings, where the finish is applied in as many as seven layers to achieve just the right sheen. This notion is also apparent in the brand’s sourcing, which involves employing “tree hunters” to discover the finest wood material from French forests. From inception to finished piece, Meyer attests: “Luxury is affirmed in every detail.”

STICKLEY REVITALIZES AMERICAN ARTS AND CRAFTS FURNITURE FOR A NEW GENERATION. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN S. REARDON
For more than a century, Stickley has made high-end hardwood furniture and fine upholstery. Now, with Director of Design Marissa Brown at the creative helm, the company has expanded to include fresh takes on the Mission look, as well as a midcentury-inspired line. Here, Brown describes how the brand’s history and devotion to craft informs her work. How do you honor Stickley’s heritage while moving the needle forward? I try to stay true to the company DNA and the components of a Stickley piece: the square spindles, the use of reverse taper leg details and the exposed joinery. One thing that inspired me was the ability to make furniture out of solid wood construction with techniques that have been used since the Stickley brothers were alive. Moving the brand into the future was about respecting that, while developing forms that felt more current in proportion.
Playing with iconic shapes must have been intimidating at first. It was scary; the pieces are perfect! It’s like trying to alter a Steinway piano. The horizontal and vertical components are so important in Mission-style furniture, but how do you modernize the look? I didn’t want to lose sight of what made them work, but I also wanted to soften them a little. You’ve mentioned that a trip to Hans Wegner’s studio was formative to your career. How does Danish design influence your work? I love the sculptural aspect of the Danish makers. During that era, woodworkers put so much thought into creating designs that not only looked good, but functioned beautifully. I like integrating those ideas into Stickley—that pieces should float in a room and be enjoyed from 360 degrees. We hear something new is coming for spring…Yes! This April at High Point we’re planning to debut a curated group of eclectic pieces. While designs are still evolving, the idea is to open up an offering of single items that use new materials and are interesting objects in their own right. On your wish list? The dining table from the Walnut Grove collection. I have three daughters, so I’d love to have pieces that will become family heirlooms.

Serving as Chicago’s main mail facility for more than 60 years, The Old Post Office has undergone an $800 million restoration by Gensler Chicago that encompasses the façade, main lobby and its historic corridors. After sitting vacant for almost two decades, the building now boasts a marble and gold mosaic-filled lobby, 4-acre rooftop park and office tenant amenities such as a fitness center, library and food hall. “The sense of history and commitment to preservation are evident,” says Gensler principal Sheryl Schulze. “The original spiral mail chutes, postal scales, security walkways and green mosaic tile floors were all retained to pay homage to its past while looking forward to its future.” post433.com 090 / LUXESOURCE.COM

There is nothing here that is not breathtaking. In every house, I always add a little bit of Asia, whether it’s a piece of porcelain or a tapestry across a console table. In one of the bedrooms, we used blue and white porcelain jars and boxes to accent the art above the bed.”

TOAST of the TOWN
Erin Boone knows a thing or two about bars. As founder and principal designer of Boone Interiors, her company is behind the inventive spaces of local spots like Elske Restaurant, Good Fortune and Spilt Milk. For Boone, the line between work and play blurs when she’s out on the town, winding down with friends while simultaneously seeking design inspiration. She gave Luxe the scoop on her favorite design-minded cocktail bars around town.
⊳ THE VIOLET HOUR “Heavy velvet drapery, high-back seating, traditional Victorian molding and soft candlelight give an upscale, opulent vibe to Chicago’s original cocktail bar. I’m fond of any ginbased selection from the house classics section, and there’s also a large-format punch that’s perfect for sharing.” theviolethour.com

▼ LAZY BIRD “One of my favorite new haunts (in the basement of The Hoxton, Chicago), it sports a cozy Jazz Age aesthetic complete with details like overstuffed club furniture and a baby grand piano. The cocktail menu features updated renditions of pre-Prohibition classics—I like to start with something zippy, like the Clover Club, and end with a classic Negroni.” lazybirdchicago.com
▲ ESTEREO ▲ CHEF’S SPECIAL COCKTAIL BAR “From the team behind Giant, this new spot is a play in contrasts: a place where a ‘more is more’ aesthetic coalesces into an offbeat, quirky whole. The vintage elements are my favorites, including Gilbert Marklund brutalist dining chairs, punchy floral wallpaper and 1970s-style fringed lamp-shade pendant lighting. I never leave without enjoying a punchy lemongrass gimlet…or two.” chefsspecialbar.com
“On warm days when the garage doors are up, the entire space is open, lending it a relaxed, South American-style charm. Luxe design elements include concrete Spanish tile floors, 1970s-inspired brass lighting fixtures and disco-ball mirrored bathrooms. The mezcal list is extensive—I never sway from ordering one.” estereochicago.com

COLLABORATION KELLY LARKIN X ETHAN ALLEN
Ethan Allen tapped local lifestyle expert Kelly Larkin of Kelly in the City to create a living room-esque vignette that will live in the front window of its Lincoln Park store in 2020. To make this happen, Larkin worked with the brand’s in-house designer using its 3D Room Technology to create a lifelike rendering of the nautical-themed display, scouring hundreds of fabric swatches, finishes, artwork and rug samples to bring it to life. “I grew up on the East Coast and
have always had a deep connection with the ocean, so I’m drawn to blue tones and natural textures,” Larkin says. “Since relocating to Chicago, though, my personal style has evolved. While you won’t see too many overtly coastal pieces in my home anymore, you’ll still see a lot of blue and woven pieces.” Other essential pieces in her vignette: a chunky cable-knit throw for coziness, a fiddle-leaf fig tree to add greenery, and gold accents for a touch of formality. This spring, Larkin will also be one of the first designers to create custom pieces for Ethan Allen’s new urban-chic Lucy collection, which will feature upholstered sofas, chairs and ottomans with coordinating rugs, fabrics and accessories. ethanallen.com

TV personality and fashion designer Kristin Cavallari has opened a brickand-mortar location in the West Loop for her retail brand, Uncommon James, which joins the Nashville-based flagship and a pop-up shop in L.A. to make a trio of stores offering dainty jewelry and home goods like tea towels, cheese knives and bar accessories in stylish environs. (The collection is also available online.) The newest shop features custom design elements such as a clever swing and a neon sign, both created by California-based design company Clover Visuals. “We tried to create a comfortable, modern feel inspired by Chicago’s rich history of design,” Cavallari says. “We focused on details, textures and sight lines, and also wanted to create a seamless feeling from the sidewalk to the interior of the store.” uncommonjames.com

STARBUCKS RESERVE ROASTERY CHICAGO Chicago is now home to the largest Starbucks in the world. Located inside the 35,000-square-foot former Crate & Barrel space on Michigan Avenue, Starbucks Reserve Roastery Chicago has garnered lines around the block since opening in November—and for good reason. Customers are keen to explore five stories of not-your-average Starbucks food and drink, including small-batch specialty coffees (among them, one aged in whiskey barrels), on-demand nitrogen gelato, cornetto pastries and pizzas from the Milanese bakery Princi and city-specific cocktails at the fourth-story bar, Arriviamo (“we arrive” in Italian). It’s virtually unrecognizable from its iteration as a home store, with a giant roaster front and center on the first floor. The one thing that hasn’t changed? Abundant natural light, all the better for sipping coffee with friends and admiring this design feat. starbucks.com

THE BRIGHT WAY 90 YEARS OF AMERICAN ARTISTRY
OVER THE PAST NINE DECADES,
Bright Chair has established itself as a home for dedicated artisans who practice their time-honed skills without compromise. Founded in 1927 and acquired by the Gottlieb family in 1963, Bright is one of only a handful of family-owned and -operated companies producing traditionally crafted furniture, all made in America. In 1963, Bright moved into its own facility in Middletown, New York, allowing it to begin the important step of manufacturing frames and controlling all aspects of production. This vertical integration provides complete control of production, affording the versatility to customize to meet client needs and delivery requirements, while still offering attention to detail and assured quality control. “This is my house, but it was built on my father’s foundation,” says Bright Chair President, Stan Gottlieb. “And if my grandfather, the first of four generations in furniture, who came over from Europe as a master craftsman, walked through our plant today, he would not find our process unfamiliar.” Initially producing only commercial furniture, Gottlieb joined forces with furniture designer Douglas Levine in the 1990s, and together, they expanded the product offerings to cater to the executive suites as well as the residential market. As the residential side of the business grew, it gave rise to the birth of The Bright Group at the turn of the century. “For the first time, we opened a showroom specifically aimed at the residential market, which is quite different from where we came from. People want to see and feel the furniture in context alongside other ancillary offerings like lighting and case goods,” Gottlieb says.
With this evolution, Bright began creating strategic alliances with manufacturers that shared its mantra—independently-owned and -operated American companies producing only highly crafted, quality products. Today, The Bright Group represents 21 lines and has four showrooms across the United States—Boston, Chicago, Dallas and New York, as well as alliances with other premier showrooms in territories throughout the United States and abroad. Attention to detail and exact tailoring have become hallmarks of a piece of Bright furniture. Run your hand over one and you’ll know—it’s the feel of great tradition with a most modern sensibility.

Functional and deliberate, outdoor spaces are where most people spend their highly valued, quality free time. Thus, comfort is a vital component of any outdoor design … and a feeling captured perfectly with Lloyd Flanders furniture. “All of our designs are adapted to the increasingly casual lifestyle and the desire for comfort with generous seats, plush cushioning, the incorporation of motion, and the latest performance fabrics and hardware,” president Dudley Flanders says. Using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and equipment, combined with more than 100 years of tradition and furniture knowledge, Lloyd Flanders produces the finest American outdoor furniture. Key to preserving their revered, heirloom quality is proper material selection and upkeep. Of the latter, Warren Juliano, senior vice president of sales and marketing, offers this tip: “Vacuum or use a soft brush on woven material and cushions to remove organic material and loosen surface soil, then rinse with a mild detergent and clean water.”
“Combining the best of the old with the improvements of the new yields heirloom-quality furniture.” 2

PROFESSIONAL TOUCH “Hiring a professional is important to make sure that the best materials are chosen for the right environment,” says vice president of sales Bryan Echols. Outdoor furniture is made from a wide range of materials that vary significantly in quality and durability. It’s vital to choose the right material for the particular climate. Professionals are also adept at maximizing the usage of a space. Many outdoor areas serve a variety of functions, so the furniture and accessories need to be flexible, whether the main purpose of the area is entertaining, relaxing or dining.

NORTHERN LIGHTS, MAGNETIC NORTH POLE
5
For a dramatic display of the Northern Lights, head to the Nordics and parts of Alaska and Canada to see bright colors illuminate the night sky. The Aurora Borealis starts when the sun releases charged particles that react with gaseous atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere. The gas, shifted by solar wind, dictates the vibrant hues that dance across the sky— neon greens emerge from low-altitude oxygen molecules and blues and purples result from nitrogen. Consider multiple trips: No two spectacles are the same.

INNER CIRCLE NAMIB DESERT, AFRICA
How do miles of mysterious rings of vegetation come to cover the dry ground of southern Africa’s Namib Desert? Folklore believes these ‘fairy circles’ to be footprints from the gods, while scientists cite the desert’s complex ecosystem for the peculiar markings. Regardless of how they got there, the repetition of spherical shapes creates a hypnotizing, polka-dot like motif, giving those with a bird’s-eye view an expansive, visual reminder that curved lines are always ‘in.’

ICE, ICE BABY BANFF NATIONAL PARK, CANADA
7
A contradicting play of fire and ice takes place in Alberta’s Banff National Park as winter sets in. When the lakes freeze over, bubbles rising toward the surface are stopped in their tracks. These particular bubbles are full of methane—the gas is emitted by bacteria living below the surface after consuming organic matter—and highly flammable if released near an open fire. Undisturbed, these frozen forms provide a study in motion and, more importantly, show how stunning science can be.

Soaring mountaintops are a feast for the eyes, but the Zhangye Danxia range in northern, central China boasts a particular beauty with brilliant stripes of reds, pinks and oranges—appearing as if the façade was painted with a brush. The effect is the result of some 24 million years ago, when deposits of sandstone and other minerals formed these intentional-looking layers. Combined with desert conditions, wind and erosion, the rock formations are regarded as one of the most beautiful landscapes in China.

HOME BUILDERS + REMODELERS
HEARTSTONE CUSTOM BUILDERS One of the nice things about working with Heartstone Custom Builders, says president Steve Melnick, is that clients are in good hands. “We have built custom homes for over 20 years, and our team can design and build any style of home you want,” he says. Melnick began his career in the 1990s remodeling homes, which organically grew his high-end luxury custom home business to what it is today. “We build homes on the North Shore of Chicago, multiple suburbs in Illinois, Wisconsin, as well as Naples, Florida,” he says. “We also renovate existing homes and are experts in updating and giving beautiful homes a much-needed facelift.” Taking a collaborative approach to each project, Melnick points to the importance of bringing in the right team members, from civil engineers and architects, to interior designers and landscape architects, to help clients realize the full potential of their home. “We use 3D renderings to visualize the style and look of the homes,” he says. “Also, during the project, special software lets you stay connected from your phone, tablet or computer to see daily construction photos, change orders, scheduling and your selections … from anywhere in the world, which our clients love.”
Steve Melnick President 847.951.1100 steve.melnick.50 heartstonebuilders.com
“ I named my company Heartstone Custom Builders because I really do put my ‘heart’ in every project. I’m blessed to make dreams come true for my clients.”

SWIM SEASON A picturesque pool house becomes a family’s destination for year-round entertaining. Architect Louise Brooks of Brooks & Falotico walks us through the project. brooksandfalotico.com How did you decide on the location of the pool house? The pool already existed, and the area looks out to beautiful rolling hills, so we were set from the beginning on where we were going to construct the pool house. Even though it’s only a two-minute walk from the main house, it very much feels like a destination for the clients, a family with four children. They feel like they’re on vacation when they go over there. What was on the clients’ wish list? The homeowners really wanted a full working kitchen here, meaning a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave and sink since they use it often throughout the year for everything from Super Bowl celebrations to sleepover parties. Since it’s meant for entertaining, I wanted to keep the kitchen design straightforward with as little maintenance and upkeep as possible. We actually started with the creamy man-made countertops that can weather any storm or family gathering, and the rest of the scheme stayed in a similar neutral palette. We love the bright and airy ambience. The demand for indoor/outdoor spaces continues to grow and, in this case, I went with retractable doors and big windows that stay open during the warmer months for a light and fresh effect. I also chose materials that are very durable and aren’t precious. We kept finishes to a minimum and the entire kitchen is soft, open and very welcoming; it’s all about bringing the outside in here.

HIGH LIFE
For a spectacular patio kitchen in the Hamptons, Edmund Hollander, president of Hollander Design Landscape Architects, started with functionality. “Think about where you want your dining table to be in relation to other living areas and then look at aesthetics and what you want to see when you’re in the space,” he explains. Tucking the dining setting on the side of the house protects it from seaside winds and also takes advantage of beautiful views across a salt pond. hollanderdesign.com

CHILL OUT
St. Charles New York, the maker of luxury kitchens, has launched its first-ever kitchen collection consisting of three curated series that incorporate a distinct variety of finishes, woods, hardware and paint colors. Creative Director Karen Williams notes that “as kitchens have evolved from back of house to the most significant rooms of the home, the choices have become endless and overwhelming,” but the ultimate goal of this new program is to demystify the kitchen design process for the client. Shown is STC No. 1, which draws on the brand’s rich 85-year-old design history while simultaneously ushering in a more minimal, sleek style. stcharlesnewyork.com

The kitchen and bar on this Del Mar property serves as ground zero for the casual indoor/outdoor lifestyle that epitomizes Southern California. Duan Tran, partner at KAA Design, understood that entertaining here was a priority for his clients so he decided to embrace the grill rather than hide it. “We designed the area to support the social aspects of grilling and hanging with friends, so it became a focal feature within the space,” Tran reveals. Interior designer Mark Williams, who collaborated on the project, customized the hanging lanterns and barstools. kaadesigngroup.com

THE LOOK / THE REPORT
In this Beverly Hills, California, home, by McClean Design and Craig R. Williams Construction, designer Lindsay Chambers crafted a serene, earth-toned master bedroom to play off the European oak floors and ceiling wainscot. Bridging the divide between the interior and exterior are three walls of bronze-plated, stackable sliding glass doors from All Metal Window Corp. Notes Chambers of the full effect, “The bedroom is meant to feel like its own spa retreat.

DIVE INTO NATURE FROM THE COMFORT OF HOME. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT
THE GREAT INDOORS With each spring comes the desire to reconnect with the natural world. But rather than restrict the approach to the shifting seasons, we’re taking a year-round perspective to living with the outdoors. After all, ecotherapy is known to have restorative benefits, so why silo its riches? Here, we uncover a panoply of evergreen inspiration, from immersive architectural details and honest materials to magical spaces that blur the lines between indoor and out—like this bedroom by designer Lindsay Chambers, which seemingly floats like a lily pad above a saline pool.

INTO THE WOODS
For a Seattle couple who requested that their home feel like a virtual walk in the woods, DeForest Architects imagined a glass-and-blackened-steel structure cantilevering over the forest floor, canopied from all sides by evergreen trees and boasting postcard views of the Puget Sound. Recalls designer Andy Beers of Ore Studios, who later guided the “treehouse” through interior finishes and furnishings, “What was astonishing about construction was that when drywall went up, it changed the character of the house very little: It continued to feel like you were outside. And even though you’re floating and surrounded on all sides by glass, there’s a real sense of coziness and privacy.” deforestarchitects.com; orestudios.com

When tasked with outfitting a mintcondition screened-in porch in New England, the husband-and-wife design team of Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller adopted a less is more approach to celebrate the simplicity of its comforts—namely, shade, breeze and verdant views. Where the custom Groundwork table from Mecox Gardens offers a literal interpretation of bringing the outdoors in with its whitewashed tree trunk base, a zinc top and complementary DWR resin dining chairs keep the scheme both contemporary and stalwart. Of the considered mix, Carrier shares, “We wanted to pay homage to the home’s original Victorian architecture, while also addressing the owner’s desire for a more modern look and family-friendly materials.” carrierandcompany.com

CLEAR VISION “You can’t escape the weather when you live in the Scottish Highlands,” says Petra Palumbo. “It’s in your face, all-consuming, ever-changing, extreme and unbelievably beautiful.” This reverence for Mother Nature is evident in the U.K.-based homeware designer’s collections both in motifs and mission. Take, for example, signature pieces like the crystal orange jug and tumbler (shown), which are made to order, hand-painted in natural inks and shipped in recycled packaging. “We take a holistic approach to sustainability,” says Palumbo. “We are certainly not perfect and have many areas we need to refine, but it’s a start.” petrapalumbo.com

COASTAL CHARM Libations look best in a bar cart, and indoor-outdoor spaces are no exception to the rule. Consider the weatherworthy drinks trolley from the new Arc by Winch Design for Summit Furniture collection. Combining Winch’s roots in yacht design and Summit’s dedication to the finest sustainable teak, the debut collaboration offers an elegant take on seaside style, evidenced in its sleek finishes and rounded edges, and echoed in its name—Arc—a nod to maritime shapes like the lines of latitude and longitude, the curve of the horizon and the silhouette of a full sail. summitfurniture.com; winchdesign.com

While a rarity stateside, solariums are a cultural mainstay in Europe. Inspired by spaces enjoyed during frequent travels throughout Switzerland and Germany, a couple asked their longtime designer, Christina Roughan, to devise a glass addition off the back of their home in Greenwich, Connecticut. A collaboration between Roughan Interiors, Argus Development and Jones Byrne Margeotes Partners, the immersive enclosure features three walls of bi-fold doors with remotecontrol screens, and an open-concept furniture scheme fit for lounging, dining and entertaining in every season. “Last Fourth of July, it hosted guests for fireworks and during the winter solstice, the family will watch old movies and stargaze,” says the designer, adding, “It’s quite impressive to watch TV while lounging upon a heated floor and enjoying snow falling all around you.” roughaninteriors.com; argusdevelopmentllc.com; jbmparch.com

PAST PERFECT
On a hillside cradling Tennessee’s Pickwick Lake, Asheville, North Carolina-based firm Carlton Edwards fashioned a winter garden room for enjoying the dramatic vista. Drawing inspiration from great American lake lodges built in the 1930s and ’40s, textured fieldstone masonry and turned timber columns were employed to lend a nostalgic feel. But where the architectural envelope channels woodsy encampments of yesteryear, modern comforts abound in details like ceiling heaters, a steel-clad fireplace, and lowslung, slipcovered furnishings, which mingle with insouciance amongst indoor plantings. Notes firm Design Director Jeff Edwards, “It’s a nod to the past, but a rustic, modern interpretation. We wanted the room to feel warm and inviting—like an old friend.” carlton-edwards.com

The long VIEW Scandinavia has long been recognized as a leader in sustainability—a concept embraced as a lifestyle rather than a catchphrase. So, who better to turn to for a lesson in green living than the fourth-generation owner of Dinesen, Denmark’s 120-year-old premier wood flooring company? “The core of our business is the excellent raw wood, and that commits us to constantly making an effort to use the material in the best possible way,” says owner Thomas Dinesen. “We are fully aware of the effort that precedes the tree before it reaches our hands.” dinesen.com

WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY
⊳ FOREST THROUGH THE TREES In an era of speed and convenience, Dinesen takes a refreshingly measured approach. “The logs we get are typically between 80 and 200 years old,” says owner Thomas Dinesen, adding that it requires generations of foresters in France and in Germany’s Black Forest (shown) to nourish trees for the resulting floor boards and wall paneling. Plus, he adds, “You only cut trees when it is beneficial for the land.” Case in point: a German supplier whose forest has been in the family since the year 1600. “This is only possible if you think ahead of your time,” says Dinesen. “Gather what you need from nature but leave something for future generations.”
AGE OF REASON ⊲ Rather than reject imperfections, Dinesen embraces the natural blemishes resulting from a tree’s 150-year-old life span, as seen here in the expressive Heart Oak panel. “The outcome is unfathomably beautiful planks that both aesthetically, and in strength, last for many generations,” says Dinesen. That same philosophy applies once installed. “Our planks become more beautiful when used. Sliding your hand over a worn plank or railing and noticing the grains of the wood and the growth rings creates a special feeling of well-being—a bit like a face full of wrinkles and creases reflecting a life well lived.”
LX_COM30_TheLook_TheReport.indd 167
▲ HYGGE LIFE Call it what you want, but creating a calm, cozy and stress-free home environment tops many a design wish list, and Dinesen wholeheartedly subscribes to this notion. “For us, creating well-being is very important. The more uneasy your daily life becomes, the more you will need a place that creates peace and balance,” says the owner. “That is what our wood can do.” An oak plank arranged in a herringbone pattern, such as the one shown above, can evoke that elusive sense of serenity.

THE GREAT DIVIDE
Light and shadow. Concrete and glass. Often, the most impactful indoor-outdoor designs come down to simple dualities—a hallmark of architect Scott Mitchell’s projects. In celebration of his work’s first volume (Scott Mitchell Houses, Rizzoli), we asked the California architect to speak to his distinct approach to connecting the natural and built environments. scottmitchellstudio.com Best way to incorporate nature: With deep overhangs and a continuity of material planes that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. Design should be experienced... As a narrative. As with film or music, the journey begins with the arrival sequence. From there, there is less a concern for a formality gradient as for a flowing connectivity of spaces. Dream project: A public aquarium. Up next: A boutique hotel on Phillip Island, Australia, and a modern farm outside Toronto. Every home needs: The psychology of shelter. A house should be a safe and comfortable harbor from the world.

“Having a sound understanding of the style and common uses of a home’s interior is vital for planning exterior spaces,” says Larry Thalmann, president of Chalet, a local business that offers award-winning landscape design services and a nature-inspired retail store. It’s this holistic approach that gives Chalet the distinction of being the only lifestyle brand in the Chicagoland area to provide a full suite of products and services designed to bring beauty to outdoor living, including landscape design, maintenance services, and a wide range of home decor and outdoor furniture collections. Spending as much time as possible outside, day or night, seems to be the mantra of today’s homeowners, who are looking to channel the southern climate lifestyle wherever they live—through outdoor kitchens, entertainment areas, fabrics and more. Enter, Craig Bergmann Landscape Design, the award-winning landscape architectural firm lauded for creating outdoor living areas that are as comfortable as inside one’s home. The first step in shaping that environment is designing a quality landscape, including top-of-the-line materials and the impeccable implementation of all elements of the new landscape project. “We believe in the use of current technologies, while still using traditional materials to seamlessly support the landscape needs of light, water and horticulture, without visual interruption wherever possible,” principal Craig Bergmann says. “We truly believe it is our job to help our clients’ dreams become reality. We help provide options and editing, so all details are aligned for success.”

“ Our landscapes bring the whole site to life; a great design always has high impact.”
THE HIGHLY INTENDED GARDEN Circulation is often how we start the makeup of a garden. We love landscapes with clean, simple lines whether the project is traditional, modern or even naturalistic. We would argue that one of our traditional landscapes could be easily changed to a modern design by just changing out the materials. We believe a landscape should have a personality. We see too many landscapes that are composed of a vast array of plants, but there is no design language or rationale to plant selections or layout. In our planting design, we try to create a thoughtful vision with every plant given a location that is highly intended. In the end, the composition appears so natural and fluid, which doesn’t happen by chance.

Collaboration and cohesion play into every aspect of the design process for landscape architects Brian Culliton and Tony Quinn, owners of Culliton Quinn Landscape Architecture. Collaborating with a design team of architects and interior designers, they work together to ensure that the landscape design and material makeup respond to the design work, and most importantly, the client’s vision. “As landscape architects, our role is bringing together the design for everything outdoors,” Culliton says. “Our focus is not on one element, but rather a cohesive design that involves all our client’s wishes.” To achieve a seamless integration between inside and out as well, Culliton Quinn keeps its landscapes pretty neutral in color with natural stone tones in blues, grays and buffs. “Plants bring various shades of green with pops of color through perennials and seasonal planters, depending on the client’s tastes,” Quinn says. “The goal is to create a timeless palette that can be embellished with planting.”

OUR TOP REQUEST. Creating private spaces for the family is something we’re asked for on both suburban and city projects. Everyone wants screening whether with plants, an overhead structure with surrounding privacy screens, or fencing. Other popular items include outdoor kitchens and fire pits. And for those with kids, any size lawn area is a must. SOME UNIQUE PROJECTS. One client requested a whimsical Wizard of Oz woodland garden with full-scale animal topiaries for a city garden. We also had a client on the North Shore who loved water, so we designed and installed a series of fountains, spills and a 100-foot-long water rill, as seen in the top image.

“ Outdoor living spaces are more than just a setting for the physical residence; they’re an entire unfolding experience.”
HORTICULTURE, ENVIRONMENT + NATURE Landscape architects have always been champions of the environment. We’re advocates for the environment in every project, and we view every project with stewardship in mind. Gardens are becoming part of people’s everyday lives, for example, people are cultivating vegetables, herbs and honey bees. They’re attracting wildlife and contributing to a healthier environment. All of this can be designed in a very beautiful and responsive way. Gardens aren’t just about style; they have substance.
1
A GARDEN IS FOREVER A well-built garden has the bones to withstand trends. Some things come and go, but the structure remains the same. For example, outdoor trends like fire pits and kitchens can change, but the garden endures. While a garden isn’t immune from using furniture and accessories of the moment, like a good indoor room, it’s designed around timeless fundamentals.

For the team at Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, successful outdoor living is characterized by an articulated architectural space that is surrounded by dynamic horticulture. “Just as an architect or designer considers the indoor space, we evaluate similar factors outside: good circulation, materials and functionality,” says senior partner Doug Hoerr, FASLA, who runs his award-winning company with partners Carroll Conway, John Evans, Nick Fobes, Rob Gray and Simon Prunty. Among the many qualities that make Hoerr Schaudt unique, creating designs that respond well to seasonality is a standout. “We incorporate plants that are appropriate to the microclimate and region,” Hoerr says. Working with nature, versus against it, the team advises planning the architectural spaces before thinking about plants. “When you think about the architecture, hardscape and greenscape together, you can create one composition, where all the parts fit together,” Hoerr says. A masterpiece of art come to life.

ON SUSTAINABILITY + FUNCTIONALITY What makes your outdoor product or brand distinctive in terms of material, quality and functionality? We are unique in the fact that everything is customized to the homeowners’ needs, and each design is different. We also incorporate high-quality materials that fit these customized details for the environment. How are you responding to the increasing demand for sustainability as well as lowmaintenance options when it comes to outdoor living? Sustainability is at the forefront of our approach. We want to build landscapes that can withstand the test of time and add value to your property, all while giving you peace of mind.

When it comes to outdoor living, fire features, outdoor kitchens and vegetable gardens continue to play major roles in the way these spaces look and function. With this in mind, Colleen Barkley, design manager of Mariani Landscape, complements her clients’ lifestyles and how they engage in their space when taking on any new landscape or garden project. Hence, creating flow and a fit for homeowners’ needs are a paramount part of the process. Collaboration with clients is also key, as Barkley and her team begin with a dialogue about what the client’s “program” is for the space. “Next, we brainstorm different ideas and how the space can be exercised, allowing us to engage with the client and them to become part of the process,” she says. With the project complete, proper maintenance steps in, but first, says vice president of maintenance sales Nate Birch, “Make sure you choose a company you can trust to do the job right and that won’t cut corners.” Saving clients time, money and maintenance in the end.

TOPALIAN + WASEMANN DIG IN ON SUSTAINABILITY. We try to use local plant material, an indigenous palette, and limit the use of plants that require excessive watering or maintenance. Bioswales, roof and rain gardens that maintain stormwater on-site help too. ON CONTINUITY. We often challenge our plant material by putting big material in tight spaces, so it’s very important that best maintenance practices are used. We use materials that are proven to withstand the Midwest climate and conditions, and ensure proper drainage for better plant health and longevity. ON PROFICIENCY. A landscape professional will address issues homeowners often overlook, such as erosion or drainage, as well as any site challenges. They also bring creativity through design and know how to cost-effectively phase a project over time.

While every Scott Byron & Company garden design is unique, each share three key characteristics: an intense attention to detail, an unrelenting adherence to design principles and exceptional craftsmanship. “As landscape architects and designers, we have a vital role in bringing the homeowner’s intent and vision to fruition by listening carefully to their wishes, translating their ideas to the natural and built environment, and creating spaces that feel special to them,” says senior landscape architect Gary Topalian. Designing and constructing landscape elements, such as pools, pergolas, gazebos, outdoor kitchens, terraces, planters and more, Topalian, senior landscape designer Tony Wasemann, and their team apply the creative use of structural plants and a highly detailed examination of materials to devise site-specific and appropriate designs. “We develop a unified space by extending the architectural style, materials and details into the landscape and beyond,” Wasemann says.
“ The homeowner’s outdoor experience is enhanced by how the elements are placed in creatively developed gardens.”

lexandra Kaehler’s husband had only two requests when she was designing their new home in Winnetka: a classic white kitchen and no floral prints. His wish for the kitchen was granted, but his aversion to florals met a different fate. Botanical wallpaper surrounds the master bedroom and the living room has a gracious flower-printed sofa. But like many spouses of designers, Kaehler’s husband always knows to expect his wife’s “just wait” moments. Her eponymous firm has been turning out high-end residential interiors for nearly a decade. Designing one’s own home, however, is a different story. “I had to
really treat myself like a client and create presentations and boards so that I knew everything I chose would be something I’d be happy with in the end,” she says. “I wanted it to feel sort of traditional, but with choices that are unexpected.” Like many Chicagoans, Kaehler had initially resisted a move to the suburbs. But she and her husband saw the need for space and the desire for a few domestic enticements—a pantry, mudroom and ample master closet among them. They landed on a traditional two-story with an excellent footprint and plenty of green space, but the house was lacking personality. To crack the code on its lackluster elements—paneling, subpar materials, closed-off rooms
Kaehler’s choice of wallcovering in the formal dining room—a custom Arbre de Matisse design from Quadrille—makes the room feel fresh and approachable. Riffing on her classic-with-a-twist style, she chose a Visual Comfort & Co. chandelier with a traditional silhouette but in Lucite and brass for a modern feel.

In the hallway of the entry, she paired a macramé bench by Brooklyn-based Peg Woodworking with an abstract William McClure painting. and a confusing second-floor layout—Kaehler called in her good friend, general contractor Scott Rosett, and noted architect Paul Konstant. “Paul has such a good eye,” she says. “He got it in one second.” A serious transformation was in order, the objective of which, Konstant says, was to make it current and livable, fresh and light, and improve on the character of the structure without tearing it down. The interior renovation yielded a 21st-century redux for a young family who wanted to put every inch to use. “We reoriented the plan, added new partitions and removed walls to open up spaces,” says Konstant. The formal living room was altered to become the dining room and butler’s pantry (which Kaehler painted a dark green that she’d originally envisioned for the kitchen).
LX_CH59_HOM_Kaeler_14_.indd 227
The bold space features a mosaic backsplash and brass detailing, and Kaehler selected high-gloss paint over lacquer. “I wanted to see the texture, and having it painted felt a little more old-school.” She hadn’t planned to dress the ceiling but went for it after spying the vibrant wallpaper on Instagram. Architectural elements added another layer of that desired personality. In the foyer, moldings were added to give the interiors more interest. “Paul made some great tweaks to make it feel really purposeful and special,” says Kaehler. The coffered ceilings in the living room were, as she says, “a happy accident” after contending with an annoying structural beam. Another game-changing move was Konstant’s revision of the

Kaehler’s pursuit of livable style and comfort found an eager cast of custom seating: Slipper chairs upholstered in Schumacher fabric, a striped Pindler fabric on the chaise and a sofa dressed, once again, in Lee Jofa’s Althea print. Pen-and-ink drawings by Kaehler’s sister, artist Carly Berlin, hang on either side of the sofa.

all-seasons porch just off the living area. Installing a wall of windows created a beautiful sight line straight to the exterior. Landscape architect Phil Rosborough optimized that view with a graceful design that is in step with architecture and accommodated the outdoor kitchen, pool and lounge areas. “Additional evergreen trees, ornamental flowering trees, summer blooming shrubs and perennials were added to further build up the borders and create a lush, layered and secluded

feel with something happening all year long,” says Rosborough. “There was particular emphasis on summer living around the pool and screen porch.” “One thing that’s really special about this home is that it lives like a garden house in many ways,” says Kaehler. “Every room opens up to the backyard. It’s real indooroutdoor living. I like that being reflected in the interiors. They bring the outside in and they offer such a beautiful color palette.”

was last to the party,” muses interior designer Frank Ponterio, in reference to his work on a Lake Michigan vacation home located on a secluded piece of wooded land. Architect Nicholas White and landscape architect Douglas Hoerr were already deep into the programming by the time Ponterio was brought on. But like every decision made by the team, this one was purposeful: The outdoors had to be considered first. “At the end of the day, this home is meant to be a beach house,” Ponterio explains. “There are always kids of all ages running around in wetsuits, tracking sand everywhere.” The clients chose White and Hoerr for the project, as well as general contractor Jeffrey Ford, in part because of their passion for the beauty of the locale. The land had never been touched and they made every effort to place the architecture on the site so that it looked as if nothing had been done. Working together, they dropped the main house down on the property and nestled it into the woods. “We had enough land that we could push the home down to a lower tier so they can walk right out onto the beach,” White says. “Instead of overlooking the water, the views are across the lake.” “We wanted to champion the context of northern Michigan and make sure it was all at one with the site,” adds Hoerr. That included everything from the terraces to the infinity pool to the property’s pond. In turn, the landscape informed much of the design of the traditional Shingle-style house. The chosen location came with the challenge of the darkness that comes with being surrounded by woods. White and Ford combatted this with ample clerestory and large banks

LX_CH59_HOM_Ponterio_10.indd 238
of windows that let in as much natural light as possible. The local vernacular also played an important role. Shingle-style is as prevalent in this area of Michigan as it is in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, so even though the home is new construction it blends seamlessly with houses that have been in the region for generations. “It fits the vibe of the area,” says White, who notes that his clients didn’t want anything too modern or Victorian. Ponterio came on once the site had been cleared, the foundation poured and a loose floor plan in place, and although he was “late to the party,” he immediately took a leading role in the interior architecture. “The clients wanted somebody who could interpret what they wanted in a family home,” says the interior designer. “From a creativity standpoint, they were looking for new ideas and to stretch the boundaries beyond what was thought to be possible.” Inspired by the family’s love of boating and the beach, Ponterio used beadboard and shiplap throughout, working with master craftsmen—“Jeff’s team was chock-full of them,” he remarks—to achieve his vision. The library, where the husband spends a great deal of his time, is a showcase of Ponterio’s concept, with teak and holly floors and a concave ceiling reminiscent of the underside of a ship’s hull. Another nod to the lakeside location occurs in the circular formal dining area, where a handpainted DeGournay mural of one of the homeowners’ favorite lookout points pairs with mohair dining chairs that pick up on the watery hues. Even the children’s areas tell a story of sailing, such as in the boys’ blue and white bunk room complete with a ship’s wheel designed to look like a boat’s helm. It’s a space that celebrates the joy sparked by a child’s imagination. And joy might just be the overarching theme of the entire home. It was designed for guests—“lots of guests,” says Ponterio. “Sometimes there's two, sometimes four, sometimes 40.” From the screened porch, which is the setting for casual, everyday gatherings, to the great room, where even a rainy day is enjoyable thanks to its enormous stone fireplace, the house is filled with comfort. The open concept that merges the great room with the kitchen makes hosting easy, as do the dual islands that serve well the clients’ passion for cooking. And one must not forget the sleeping porch, which spurs fond memories of summer camp. As Ponterio points out, even though it’s a big house, it lives like a cottage. “There are large spaces, but intimate areas within them allow you to interact a bit more,” he notes. In other words, it’s the perfect place for a party.
1/23/20 11:06 AM
Integrating the landscape was important both indoors and out, so landscape architect Douglas Hoerr chose a custom blend of Vermont and Connecticut fieldstone for the great room fireplace, against which the iron and wood chandelier from John Rosselli & Associates holds its own. The Holly Hunt sofa is upholstered in a Holland & Sherry linen with contrasting cord from Samuel & Sons.

an Gunn has a thing for the circus. And that affinity could not be more apparent than in his art, a showcase of large-scale works that appear to be immense swaths of hung fabric (think a huge circus tent, as well as aprons, tablecloths and quilts). But there’s a touch of trickery behind them: They are, in fact, lacquered plywood. That trompe l’oeil effect stems from Gunn’s days working as a set builder. “With a theater set, you’re building a threedimensional picture made up of different parts that are incredibly unconvincing up close,” he explains. “But then you combine them all, like a puzzle, and they become convincing once the stage lights are on and the actors are whizzing about. There was something about that kind of picture that was incredibly appealing; how it could be a prop for the imagination.” Gunn pondered how he could create something that was both an image and an object. Over the years, he had amassed a collection of fabrics, arranging them in various formations on the wall and initially recreating those formations using Plexiglas; he subsequently graduated to using plywood while simultaneously refining the process. Gunn arranges the drapery in the studio, photographs it and then manipulates it using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. “If I’m hand-cutting the form, I’ll project the image directly onto the wood, trace it and cut it out,” he explains. “If I’m using a CNC router, I convert it into vector shapes in Illustrator, which the router uses as a template when it cuts out the pieces.” Gunn then stains the pieces and laces them together with small-gauge rope.
LX_CH59_SM_Gunn_4.indd 249
Many of Gunn’s material choices are influenced by his Midwestern upbringing. “I’m from Kansas City originally, so the materials I’ve chosen play on some craft tropes,” he explains. “Obviously, plywood is an industrial 1960s-andafter kind of material, but it still has this character of being almost a picture of wood grain. It’s a nod to Midwestern craft tradition.” That maker influence is also evident in his eye for bright colors, which stems in part from watching his quilter grandmother work wonders with fabric scraps. What’s inherent is the impishness of it all, he says. “I think there’s something a bit silly about remaking a fabric out of wood. It’s a bit absurd.” That playfulness keeps Gunn from being chained to one style or medium. Case in point: his stoneware frogs, into which he drills holes and inserts marbles, creating a fairy tale-esque idea of the amphibian with multiple eyes. “There’s something about the imagery that seemed surreal,” he muses. Gunn’s hope is that his works will stay with people long after they’ve viewed them. “I like to present objects that have a kind of complexity that unfolds over time,” he says. “And I don’t want that encounter to be totally reducible to a single emotion, but one in which the viewer feels a realm of emotions and hopefully that realm is a complex one.”
In his studio, artist Dan Gunn (opposite) works on his piece Ringer Scenery. Gunn’s process for the “Scenery” series begins with color studies and material tests (above). While much of his work involves plywood (top, left), he also created a whimsical series of stoneware frogs, which includes The Ungrateful Son, No.11 (top, right).

or years, realtor and serial renovator Mimi Collins admired a historic early 20th-century Tudor Revival home in Hinsdale by renowned architect R. Harold Zook. So when its owner decided to sell the house after more than five decades, Collins and her husband, Dan, swooped in and bought it. “Dan knew that I would fix it,” Mimi says. Mimi has renovated more than a dozen other houses, so she used her expertise to assemble a skilled team to carry out her vision, recruiting designers Jennifer Kranitz and Aimee Wertepny, along with architect Michael Abraham. Abraham could arguably be considered an expert in Zook homes, as he’s revitalized several others in the area. “Zook’s work has been a source of inspiration over the years,” Abraham says. “His houses are all kind of funky and cool for the time.” Like Mimi, Abraham had long loved the house, even touring it on several occasions, and he already had ideas about how to bring it into the modern era. For example, he eliminated a wall in the front foyer, opening up the curved stairway and creating a sight line between the front and back doors. He also eliminated a narrow back stairway altogether. “It was kind of a maze of little rooms and hallways that were difficult to use,” he explains. Barely touched by the previous owner, the charming abode still boasted its original flooring and millwork, handforged brass hardware in the shape of animal heads and signature Zook touches like a small window with a spiderweb motif, which is hidden away in the foyer closet. “This home really has its own language,” Kranitz says. “We just had to show up and let it shine.” To achieve that, Kranitz says the designers asked themselves, “How do we bring this house up to date without undermining the original intent, character and charm?” In one of the most dramatic changes, they converted the small original kitchen into a breakfast space outfitted with a wall-to-wall tufted banquette and a pair of intentionally mismatched round tables. At one end, Mimi’s office houses handsome built-in cabinetry. On the ceiling, a quatrefoil pattern in a motif taken from the home’s front façade elevates the look. “I call it SoHo House of Hinsdale,” Mimi says of the room, noting that she and Dan often sit in there all day long. The original formal dining room is now a much larger kitchen with gray-stained walnut cabinetry by O’Brien Harris, honed white Lincoln Calacatta marble countertops and open

metal wall shelving. When illuminated, the vintage Paris streetlights above the center island reflect off the original beamed wooden ceiling and the Venetian plaster-covered walls. “It’s alive with texture,” Wertepny says. “Buh-bye, subway tile.” Although the designers lobbied Mimi to open the spacious new kitchen to the adjacent living area, she resisted. Instead, a pair of doors integrated into bar cabinetry can either be closed off or left open, creating options. Nearby, a pair of contemporary sofas and more traditional wing chairs surround the original stone fireplace atop an elegant wooland-silk rug that’s based on a painting by Francine Turk. “We push Mimi away from her comfort zone and make her spaces a little funkier than she would do on her own,” Kranitz says. Mimi especially credits the designers for sourcing the many new light fixtures throughout the interior. A modern linear leather-wrapped bronze fixture contrasts the original moldings and beams in the living room. And a sculptural tiered glass medallion chandelier takes advantage of the
newly lofted ceilings in the master suite, where a low-slung tufted headboard and a decidedly modern chaise lounge coexist with classic antiques from Mimi’s existing collection. “The room is humanly scaled, yet the volume allows the light to pour in,” Wertepny says. “It’s heaven.” While Mimi sacrificed a bedroom to create a more spacious master bathroom with dual vanities and a spacious Carrara marble-clad shower, there’s plenty of room for guests in the new detached garage and second-floor coach house. Built with the same materials as the original and featuring the same unique roofline, the structure looks as if it’s always been there. Dan and Mimi feel right at home in the newly revitalized house. “I have to give Mimi a lot of credit,” says Kranitz. “If any other client had said that she was going to do the renovation herself, I’d say, ‘We’re out,’ but I’d seen her do it before. Most people don’t have the vision. She does.”
An organic metal wall sculpture by Eric Gushee takes center stage in the sunken family room, which is furnished with an RH sofa and a Carrara marble slab coffee table styled with vintage horns, a wood-carved Buddha and other collectibles from the clients’ personal collection.
