Neolith® is an architectural skin capable of dressing up any interior or exterior commercial or residential space where it’s applied from floors and walls to kitchen countertops, facades and even furniture. The large format minimizes the number of joints in cladding for decorative and hygiene benefits. The minimal thickness allows it to be directly applied to an already existing surface without the need for prior removal.

It’s a low-maintenance material given its special resistance to scratches, stains, chemicals, high temperatures and traffic. Neolith® also provides the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality given its unlimited possibilities and capacity to resemble all-natural materials like stone, wood and metal. NEXT STOP: ATLANTA MARKET

EVERY JANUARY AND JULY, DESIGNERS AND RETAILERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY COME TO ATLANTA MARKET SEARCHING FOR INSPIRATION AND SOURCING FROM MORE THAN 8,000 BRANDS.

Atlanta offers a curated, cross-category shopping experience unlike anywhere else in the country, with dedicated product neighborhoods featuring home decor, lifestyle, tabletop, housewares, accessories and much more. Beyond discovering new products, you’ll find a community of people that shares a passion for quality and originality. Take advantage of educational seminars, trend presentations and networking events, all designed to help you take your business to the next level.

What’s New in Atlanta? The AmericasMart campus is undergoing a physical and strategic facelift under the AtlantaNext initiative. Look for remerchandised home floors, enhancing the buying experience for designers and home furnishings retailers alike. The new showroom layout in Building 1 features 130 home decor showrooms on five consecutive floors open year-round, as well as during markets. The new showroom configurations allow for a more centrally located Designer Workspace on the 15th floor. Positioned right off the elevator lobby, the new workspace was conceived by Barbour Spangle Design as a retreat to recharge and escape from the hustle and bustle of market to meet with clients or catch up on emails. The Scandinavian-meets-neo-traditional space will be packed with resources for designers, from open lounge spaces for networking and socializing, to private meeting quarters for presentations or personal focus.

What You’ll Find Artwork from Leftbank Art, Soicher Marin, Grand Image Home and Wendover Art Group. Soft goods from Eastern Accents, Lili Alessandra, Peacock Alley and Johanna Howard Home. Lighting from Currey & Company, Ro Sham Beaux, Jamie Young Company and Arteriors. Furniture from Palecek, Caracole, Gabby and Made Goods. Floor coverings from Dash & Albert, Loloi, Nourison and Spicher and Company. Decorative accents from Global Views, Dôme Deco, BoBo Intriguing Objects and Port 68. And so much more.

RADAR / IN CONVERSATION

Something BORROWED ARCHITECT NINA EDWARDS ANKER SWIFTLY ADVANCES THE CONVERSATION ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH

Leave it to Nina Edwards Anker to design a residence that personifies sustainability. The New York-based architect received her doctorate from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design leading to her acclaimed Southampton project, Cocoon House. Here, Anker opens the doors to her Gold LEED-certified home and forward-thinking approach to the built environment. What was your biggest takeaway from studying in Norway? The minimalist aesthetic really resonates with me. Norwegian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn made structures nestled into the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the little homes set against the vast water and snowscapes. That shaped my attitude as to how architecture relates to nature. Let’s talk about the Cocoon House and its unusual curved shape! I was inspired by a yurt in Vermont. I’m interested in how we can use scientific technologies to do what our ancestors did. One of my favorite times of year in the house is a sunny winter day, sitting in a T-shirt in the living room with no heat on and it’s still so warm. These ancient typologies worked for a reason. Your perspective focuses on affect before effect. The starting point is you have a family member with a health issue—in this case, my son has asthma—and you address that before anything else, so the house is a purely timber ‘breathable’ structure. It’s better for breathability and for the climate in terms of CO2 release. So health and sustainability go hand-in-hand? How we address our spaces in terms of well-being and the environment should be in sync. The orientation of the site, breezes, sunlight, lack of clutter—that’s all wellness. Share another example of a well-designed LEEDcertified building. I love the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. It’s a gateway between the urban and natural landscape. Just because it’s sustainable, doesn’t mean it needs to be overly technical or intimidating. What's next? My book on the Cocoon House launches in August. I’m also working on the Flora and Fauna Extinction Project, making furnishings inspired by plants going extinct in the natural world.

LX_COM31_Radar_InConversation.indd 96

In the hallway of the Cocoon House, translucent colored skylights are designed to enhance the experience in each space. Colors range from vermilion red, signaling sunset and rest, above the master bedroom, to deep yellow, indicating zenith and activity, near the living room.

RADAR / DESTINATION

Paradise FOUND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED RESTORATION, THE SAN YSIDRO RANCH OPENS THE LAST OF ITS DOORS. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TONDRO

The silver lining to nature’s wrath is that it tends to bring out the strength and ingenuity in people— and such was the case when mudslides struck the San Ysidro Ranch in 2018. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, much of the beloved resort was buried under mud when a deluge following the Thomas Fire sent rivers of topsoil down the mountains. For owner Ty Warner and the architects at Appleton Partners—who had collaborated on its historical restoration years prior—the mission was clear. First, revive the property to even greater splendor. Second, protect it for future generations by working in tandem with the topography. “We kind of rebuilt from an earthworks point of view,” explains Ken Mineau, principal and project architect. This translated to using the enormous sandstone boulders that had tumbled down the mountain to buttress the banks of the San Ysidro Creek and the foundations of its abutting cottages—a few of which were rotated away from the water. In an imperative investment, a debris basin above the ranch was enlarged to catch future fall, and 400 mature olive and oak trees were planted to restabilize the terrain. With the landscape reborn, a crew of roughly 250 subcontractors descended each day for a year and a half, intent on reestablishing the same architectural flavor to the damaged buildings. Materials catalogued during their first renovation, such as antique oak floors and limestone slabs, were installed anew as an assembly line of tradesmen worked their way up the creek. “It was a Herculean effort, but it’s back to what it was and that’s a beautiful thing,” Mineau says. “Every rock, every tree, every roof is back in place.” Save for one exception: The boulder that came six inches shy of wiping out the 1825 Old Adobe. That stone will remain alongside the historic landmark, defiant. This season, bringing the revival full circle, the last four creekside cottages reopen, beckoning guests with bird song and a piece of history embalmed with great care. “It’s a healing moment,” notes Mineau. “This particular story is just one of many past and many chapters to come.”

Verdant gardens, groves of olive and citrus trees, and an array of California vernacular guest bungalows distinguish the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. Appleton Partners worked to restore and preserve its singular sense of place following mudslides exacerbated by the Thomas Fire.

A NEW WAVE OF CUSTOM HOMES ADDRESSES AN INCREASED APPETITE FOR NATURE-FIRST DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN LEAK

The words “development” and “sustainability” don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a growing number of architects and developers are working to change that perception, and are doing it in a way that connects luxury homebuyers with nature. “The smart use of natural resources in architecture is the key to a better future,” says David Lang, principal at Lang Architecture, who recently designed a lakefront community in Taylor, Mississippi, with this approach in mind. “For buyers, it’s an investment in preserving and protecting the landscape, which furthers a sense of ownership.” At Splinter Creek, the setting takes center stage. Homes on the 650-acre property “minimize human intervention into nature, while maximizing the effects on habitants,” says Lang. Each home—in addition to being crafted with sustainable materials and passive solar techniques—is designed to seem as one with the bucolic landscape. Inspired by nearby barns, Lang composed the handsome, modern structures with materials such as cypress timbers and galvanized metal. “The locally sourced wood will gray as it weathers,” says Lang. “And when it does, it will blend in with the environment.” But that’s not to say “blending” the dwellings means nestling them into the ground. On the contrary, homes sit, at least partly, on stilts and piers. Not only does this give them the appearance of hovering, it minimizes the touch of man on the earth. “It also allows for a great water view,” adds Lang. Experiencing the water and nature is also by design. Large window walls are oriented to the lakes and the volumes are broken up into separate buildings—sometimes connected by a traditional dogtrot, or open-air passage—allowing residents to experience their surroundings as they move through the day. The architect calls the luxurious homes meticulously detailed and refined, but they’re not opulent mansions—most designs clock in at roughly 2,000 square feet. “Although they are generous, especially in the public spaces, they are smaller houses created that way intentionally, so they don’t overwhelm the landscape,” says Lang. “To us, a strong connection with nature and simplicity are the ultimate luxuries.”

LX_COM31_Radar_Buzz.indd 100

Each home at Splinter Creek sits upon 2 to 18 private acres, offering buyers seclusion and an immersion with the raw natural surroundings— the latter of which architecture principal David Lang describes as “a necessity for well-being.”

“I tend to favor color in my interior design work, but my go-to favorite neutral is Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore. It’s crisp and clean.”

“Pratt & Lambert Timidity is my No. 1 choice. My entire New York City apartment is painted in it, including the ceilings. It’s an elusive and beautiful khaki shade.”

“Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball is a true white with just enough warmth. I used it for my design studio and shop. I love that it feels bright, but not too stark.”

–JOE LUCAS

–THOMAS O’BRIEN

–SARAH BARTHOLOMEW

“For as long as I can remember, Benjamin Moore White Dove has been a mainstay for designers. It is a classic, soft hue that goes with everything, and we use it constantly for trim and cabinetry.”

“Even when using a base color, it’s important to define the story and point of view. I gravitate toward gray and creamy tones, like Dover White by Sherwin-Williams, to better support surrounding layers of color.”

“Farrow & Ball Pointing is perfect for living spaces. It’s the loveliest soft white that doesn’t read too austere or brilliant. It works well in modern and traditional applications as well as for trim!”

ARCHITECTURE OF MONEY AND POWER

ON VIEW “FRIDA KAHLO 2020”

Want to be a tourist in your own city? Chicago Detours has launched Architecture of Money and Power, a behind-the-scenes view at opulent design in bank and insurance buildings downtown. “This tour is an interesting look at the space of the 1 percent over history,” says executive director Amanda Scotese. “You’ll learn about catastrophic business failures, geniuses of architecture and wild tales of Chicago’s financial history.” Spanning two hours, the tour stops at buildings like The Rookery (below), designed by the famous Burnham and Root; the New York Life Insurance Building, from William Le Baron Jenney; the Chicago Board of Trade, an Art Deco masterpiece; and more. chicagodetours.com

From June 1 to August 31, the Cleve Carney Museum of Art and the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn will be home to one of the largest private collections of original works by famed Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Featuring 26 pieces— including the 1929 painting The Bus (above)—along with photos and reproductions of Kahlo’s clothing, “Frida Kahlo 2020” will transcend museum walls and carry into the community, as both Glen Ellyn and Wheaton decorate their downtowns in honor of the exhibition and surrounding businesses host celebratory events throughout the summer. “Frida Kahlo was very much a person of the people, and to have the entire community engaged in preparation is absolutely astounding,” says Diana Martinez, executive director of the exhibition. clevecarneygallery.org 114 / luxesource.com

Hubbard Inn isn’t your standard River North bar any longer, thanks to a major renovation led by owner Carmen Rossi and Chicago architecture and design firm D+K. Anchored by a new Art Deco island bar, the first level conveys soft glamour with plush velvet booths and exposed brick walls (below); the second level, Blue Violet, is a garden-inspired, mixology-driven lounge with black-and-white flooring, swing chairs and 15,000 faux flowers hung from the rafters; the third floor, dubbed MASQ, is a private event space with a mysterious, theater-inspired aesthetic—and all are next-level fabulous. hubbardinn.com

As the fourth generation to run their family-owned Chicago furniture store, Walter. E. Smithe—which opened in 1945—sisters Caitie, Colleen, Meghan and Maureen were introduced to the business at a young age. “I was probably in elementary school when I would come in to work in the warehouse, sweeping for a nickel,” Colleen says. “My sisters and I loved being a part of it.” While they took breaks from the biz to make their own way after college, each came back when the right positions opened up. Today, they help oversee 10 showrooms, the warehouse and headquarters, working together (generally) perfectly. “It’s a constant toggle between work and family talk,” notes Colleen, but at the end of the day they’re focused on creating a furniture company that helps clients truly curate a home. Here, get to know this powerhouse quartet. smithe.com

RETROFITTED THE DRAPER

A trip to Palm Springs was a major source of inspiration for Heather Fritz, creative and interiors director for Cedar Street Companies, when she designed the tiki lounge inside The Draper, a new apartment complex located in a transformed 1950s insurance building in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Conceptualizing a tropical space with no windows was a design challenge, yet one she delivered on with a ceiling wallpapered in a palm leaf motif, a vibrant orange Smeg refrigerator and woven light fixtures—plus classic games like shuffleboard and pool. The result? “A space that transports you not only to another era, but another state of mind,” says Fritz. The Draper—whose name is a nod to the fictional Don Draper of Mad Men—joins a family of Flats apartments, including The Otis in the historic Otis elevator company factory. flatslife.com

Maureen Smithe Buyer What she does: “I use both sides of my brain: left for all the analytical spreadsheet stuff and right for the creative vision. It’s a tough balance, but I like figuring out the retail puzzle.” Favorite design style: Cozy and comfortable—aka hygge ethos.

BEAUPORT, THE SLEEPER-MCCANN HOUSE, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The provenance of the Sleeper-McCann House reads like a rich design novel. Henry Davis Sleeper, one of America’s first professional interior designers, built his summer retreat along the New England shore in 1907. He filled its rooms with a masterful mix, ranging from hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper to salvaged kitchen doors from his mother’s family’s home. After his death, Helena Woolworth McCann, a fellow collector, purchased the residence and kept much of the design vignettes intact.

Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his first Los Angeles project—Hollyhock House. Named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the floral motif can be found throughout the home. Completed in 1921, it is an early example of Mayan Revival style. In 2015, the estate reopened after a $4.3 million restoration, and in 2019, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first modern architectural cultural site in the United States to earn the accolade.

Just south of downtown Miami overlooking Biscayne Bay stands the otherworldly Vizcaya estate. FINE GRAIN WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

Move over white. Brown is back—think upholstered textiles, painted living room walls and, specifically, kitchens and baths with rich wood elements. While some may flash back to the paneled kitchens of the 1970s, today’s modern interpretation offers warmth and honors the material’s rich hues and patterning. Certain woods, such as walnut, have a beautiful depth to them that can easily cross boundaries between contemporary and traditional design. As shown here, it really shines when paired with other textures and tones.

LUXURIOUS WOOD DETAILS DRESS UP THE HOME’S MOST FUNCTIONAL ROOMS.

Court Atkins Group Design Director Deborah Van Plew worked with Element Construction to create this natural wood-inspired Bluffton, South Carolina, kitchen. The walnut cabinetry is by Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry from Palmetto Cabinet Studio. Swaim stools pull up to the island across from a Wolf range, while the side countertops are in Fresh Concrete by Caesarstone.

PERFECT PLANKS

Deborah Van Plew, design director for Court Atkins Group, offers a different perspective on the coastal kitchen for a vacation home in Bluff ton, South Carolina. While still light and bright, the design nixed a traditional white color scheme in favor of beautiful walnut surfaces and dynamic stone accents. courtatkins.com

What elements did you start with? The owner loves green, so the Blue Tides marble appealed to her right off the bat. We started with this material using it on the waterfall island and the full-height backsplashes. From there, the walnut cabinetry offered a warm, organic factor providing just the right complement to the busy stone. The wood really enhances its beautiful green tones. The design is so seamless. There are a lot of intersecting lines here. Instead of hardware, we went for a clean, streamlined aesthetic, but that meant there was no wiggle room for elements to

be off by an inch or two; everything had to align perfectly. We also thought about scale. It was important to carry vertical surfaces like the wood cabinetry to the ceiling for everything to feel integrated and connected. Where are the appliances? The kitchen faces a large great room. I didn’t want anyone to feel as though they were constantly looking into a kitchen but rather just another living area, so we created a galley behind the range. That’s where we tucked all the things you really have to use on a daily basis, including several appliances.

HIGH STYLE

CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK In the nearly 30 years since Christopher Peacock founded his eponymous luxury cabinetry company, he’s seen kitchen trends come and go, but wellmade, straightforward designs will always stand the test of time. For one of his latest projects, the king of quality kitchens walks us through how he

approaches putting together the home’s hardestworking room. peacockhome.com Where do you begin when designing a kitchen? For me, I usually start the process before I’m even inside the space. It’s important to be aware of the detailing, materials and arrangement of the rest of the home so the kitchen design is both cohesive and a natural progression. A big mistake is thinking of this room in a vacuum. Walk us through your approach to the materials. The dramatic stone was the first thing I picked out. I considered it as a piece of art in guiding the rest of the scheme. For example,

the gray and blue cabinetry colors were pulled right from the veining. Walnut has been around for a long time but there’s something about this particular wood that I just love. It brings such depth to a design and can simultaneously feel both modern and traditional. How have kitchens evolved? Today, these rooms are not considered separate spaces. Instead, they often open up to living areas, particularly in cities and urbans developments. Because of this fluidity, I wanted the elements in this kitchen to read almost like furniture: The island, oven and wall cabinetry all become decorative pieces incorporating different materials and colors.

WOODEN WONDER

MARIE FLANIGAN

photos: julie soefer.

In a Houston home, designer Marie Flanigan renovated and reinvented the master bathroom to create a statement space with stunning architectural details. Since the original bath was very dark, the first step was to brighten the room and welcome in natural light. To avoid altering the envelope of the building, she implemented a solarium ceiling allowing sunlight to flood the area during the day through solar tubes on the roof. Additional lighting was also added for a soft glow at night. marieflanigan.com

For bathrooms, especially, Flanigan recommends addressing functionality from the very beginning to ensure space is utilized in the best possible way and appliances or fittings are positioned in areas that flow easily. Although the footprint of this room was not changed, so many more usable areas were added including the vanity, bathtub and kitchenette nook. After the technical, ‘macro’ aspects of the design are decided, Flanigan says she turns to micro details like color, texture and materials. Paneled marble walls create an elegant, subtle focal point and were designed to encase the mirrors and sconces. While green stone slabs were the first-round pick, Flanigan and the client eventually decided on honed Calacatta Bettogli, an elevated and refined option. Walnut elements and unlacquered brass finishes, including wood inserts on the Samuel Heath sink fittings, were also introduced to add warmth and comfort to the bathroom. “Natural tones will never go out of style,” says Flanigan.

This spectacular Houston bathroom, designed by Marie Flanigan alongside Kelsey Grant and Sydney Manning, features Ralph Lauren sconces from Visual Comfort & Co. and an Urban Electric pendant. A Palecek chair completes the vanity area.

An eight-story townhouse offered Westport, Connecticut-based architect Roger Ferris a unique opportunity to design a statement staircase. Twelve feet in diameter and comprised of seamless white Corian cladding with white oak treads, the monumental structure was fabricated as a single piece off-site and in turn, lowered in through the roof. Notes Ferris, “It acts as a reinterpretation of a common feature that is well conceived and artfully executed.” ferrisarch.com

STRENGTH IN SIMPLICITY “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1400s, the mantra has rung true for centuries, echoed in all areas of art and culture, and perhaps none so much as architecture, a field distinguished by thoughtful restraint and fortitude. The next few pages showcase an array of timely architectural inspiration unified by clean lines, powerful function and understated wow-factor. To open the conversation, look no further than this sculptural staircase by architect Roger Ferris—a testament to the enduring dazzle of a less is more approach.

MAJOR PANE

If the view to the courtyard is any indication, a stay in the premier guest room of architect Bobby McAlpine promises to be a singular experience. Located on the lower level of his Atlanta home, the dramatic chamber is flanked on either side by sunken gardens enjoyed via ocular pivoting sash windows fabricated by DQ Ironworks. Aiding in the luminous feel despite its subterranean siting, white plaster walls, ceilings and floors host furnishings of exaggerated scale, such as the 12-foot-long Niermann Weeks table topped with antique French urns. “It was most important to make this room one you’d never forget,” says McAlpine. mcalpinehouse.com

LIGHTNESS of BEING

In the hilltop San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Malcolm Davis Architecture set about pouring daylight into a historic townhome without sacrificing privacy. Rather than punching windows through its side walls, which would have yielded undesirable views, Davis imagined a long, slim skylight punctuated by the building’s freshly exposed wood framing. Notes the architect, “This is such a captivating element because it’s a moment where a modern insertion expresses the original ‘old bones’ of the house. The skylight creates a feeling of warmth and a connection to the outdoors where you wouldn’t expect it.” mdarch.net

Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell were working as architects in Los Angeles when a notion struck: Indoor/outdoor furniture options to their tastes were dispiritingly limited. The duo spent the next year learning to weld and soon after, LAUN, their kicky outdoor furniture line, was born. Shown here, the travertine and copper Chord Daybed—inspired by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels—highlights their dynamic point of view. “We approach furniture similarly to architecture,” says Purnell. “We analyze each piece in terms of materiality, color and texture, and then we synthesize those ideas with more logical form and function requirements.” launlosangeles.com

“Originally, this space was going to be an office for the husband. However, the children fell in love and commandeered it within days of wallpapering,” shares architect Rafe Churchill of this cozy bonus room. Situated in the front portico of the Stanford White Award-winning Greek Revival he built in Sharon, Connecticut,

the space's softly sloping eaves, herringbone linen-clad walls and ceiling, and a fanlight window with views spanning 40 miles create an inspiring retreat for all ages. Notes Churchill, “We wanted to embrace the pastoral setting and historical location while creating a family home conducive to contemporary living.” hendrickschurchill.com

Pivotal MOMENT

For a home on Miami’s Venetian Islands, Strang principal Alexandra Mangimelli drew inspiration from the strong horizontal lines and deep overhangs of modernist architect Alfred Browning Parker, devising a structure she describes as both “rhythmic and purposeful.” To usher the home’s exterior strength into the sleek interiors, the architect opted for a custom black pivot door of imposing scale. Whether closed or open to 180 degrees, the immersive portal erases the divide between indoor and out, connecting the homeowners and their guests with the interior courtyard, sculptural cistern, and beyond, the waters of Biscayne Bay. strang.design

6 FANCY FRIEZE Plaster has transcended its traditional roots of late, lending gravitas to contemporary, even modern interiors. “We’ve seen a notable upswing of interest in sculptural relief, both figurative and abstract,” says Adrian Taylor, principal of Hyde Park Mouldings, the Long Island studio specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of artisanal plasterwork. “It seems people are realizing anew that the marriage of architecture and sculpture can yield sublime results,” he adds. This custom prototype—a simplified floral frieze for G.P. Schafer Architect—speaks to the medium’s fresh face for the new decade. hyde-park.com

With a trend toward digital detoxing at home, it comes as no surprise that the latest arrivals in home automation strive for subtlety and timelessness on appearance. Take Meljac’s Classique Collection, which is newly available stateside in slim 38 mm dimensions— ideal for controls that must fit in tight wall spaces—and shown here in perennially chic light bronze. After researching vintage and international public libraries, a bibliophilic couple presented Stuart Silk Architects with an unusual ask for their Issaquah, Washington, lake house: a doublestory library. Enamored with the brief, plans were drawn for a dramatic slate-toned sanctuary with dark herringbone floors. To the right of the entryway, a powder-coated steel spiral staircase fabricated by Northwest Stair & Rail, Inc. weaves to the upper level of the library, which hosts more shelves of books, a comfy, tucked-away reading nook, and a secret passageway to the master bedroom. stuartsilk.com

Prior to designer Mary Frances Young’s arrival, a Manhattan apartment’s crowning feature—namely, a plastered brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling—was shrouded by dark building materials and furnishings. Allowing the architectural envelope to take center stage, Young painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Paperwhite and paneled the floors in crisp white oak topped with a custom Amadi carpet, setting the stage for her airy take on the 19th-century parlor. “The building is a historical ice storage facility with wide hallways and big spaces. My hope was to happily mix the old building bones with new finishes and furniture,” Young notes. youngandfrances.com

Few wall treatments rival the grandeur of marble fluting, an architectural tradition passed down and reimagined for millenia. For a modern spin, consider Pinnacle, new from Artistic Tile, which trades classical fluting associations for CNC-cut triangular grooves— an intriguing contrast against the marbles’ natural veining. Available in three stones—Bianco Dolomiti, Nero (above, left) and Calacatta Gold (above, right) marble—the tiles can read bold and graphic or soft and textural, making them a dimensional addition to interiors of any flavor. artistictile.com

TRENDS IN RENOVATION CHICAGO

While trends may come and go, others stand the test of time, becoming must-haves for the luxury home. Opening walls, enclosing spaces, warming up or cooling down, adding high-tech touches—one statement speaks to “what’s trending” today: There are no trends, per se, but rather bespoke solutions tailored to how homeowners live, work and play. For the foremost experts on the following pages, today’s trends in renovation go beyond the surface and place the focus on communication, convenience and customization— all with the end goal of carving out happier, healthier lives for clients now, and in the future.

ARMAZEM.DESIGN 312.640.8872 | armazem.design |

armazemdesign.us

When starting any project, the team at Armazem.design takes a granular approach, peeling back the layers of homeowners’ goals to fine-tune what’s most important to them. “Once we know what elements are paramount, those become the starting point of our design,” says CEO Jon Fante. But when it comes time for selection, Armazem takes broader strokes, drawing from its global line of products from Italy, Brazil and the United States. “Diversity is the trend and it will be for the foreseeable future,” Fante says. Aside from kitchens, its signature product, Armazem completes the whole picture, including wall units, closets and doors, glazing systems and millwork on the architectural side, and dressing the home with unique furniture and lighting on the interior side. “Homeowners are investing in additions and creating new amenities, like gyms with wall paneling that integrates audio-video equipment and closets with open layouts, using glass sliding doors and aluminum systems.

Armazem is a relatively old word in the Portuguese language and it mainly referred to family-owned general stores. Nowadays, Armazem is used to describe boutiques, specifically in Brazil. These are not your typical shops, instead, they are dynamic and innovative, understanding that luxury is more about the experience than the product. We chose Armazem as the name for our enterprise—a modern, relevant, independent, exciting and ever-evolving showroom, curated by a diverse group of associates who share a genuine passion for design. In fact, our team is what makes us truly unique as we strive to provide the specialized and multidisciplinary knowledge needed to positively collaborate with clients and trades. Like the word itself, Armazem is ever-evolving … and will always be.

MIX; DON’T MATCH Decorative metals are very relevant in projects today, including the use of aged zinc for hoods, mirrored, polished stainless steel on drawer fronts, polished-nickel hardware, brass open shelving, and matte gunmetal and black finishes on stainless-steel fixtures, to name a few. Including decorative metals in the overall composition adds to the level of luxury and “jewelry” for the home.

MATTE MAKES ITS MOVE When it comes to modern, European cabinetry, glossy finishes are fading, while solid matte is forging the future. Many quality panels from Spain and Italy are beautiful to the eye and to the touch, offering rich color ranges with curable finishes that allow small scratches to be buffed out. These solid matte finishes contrast well with natural woods and textured, woodlike panels.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT Every project is a special undertaking, but this one had a special hue. The clients wanted a modern, black-and-white kitchen inside their characterfilled early 1900s home. This home was in the client’s family for close to a century. “There was a lot of love, care, history and respect of the past, and we felt honored to bring this new chapter to life,” they say. “Our clients later shared that several contractors and designers told them what they ‘should’ do, and we were the only ones who took the time to understand their vision and work through every detail before making recommendations, reassuring them that CraftedWild was the final destination for their dream kitchen.”

CITY WATCH: TOP RENO REQUESTS

FLEMMING INTERIORS CHICAGO 312.505.3510 | flemminginteriorschicago.com |

flemming_interiors

In the hands of the Flemming Interiors Chicago design team, led by principal Steph Flemming, interiors are reimagined without limits. “Our goal is to create clean, welcoming and livable spaces that personally inspire our clients—no matter the challenge or dream,” she says. To accomplish this, Flemming partners with clients to craft a home that is uniquely theirs. This tailored approach includes generating a list of questions moldable to each client to fully understand what they are looking for, curating a mood board to capture how the space will feel, and managing expectations and communicating every step of the way. Flemming Interiors’ comprehensive creative process carries over to its full-service offerings. “Homeowners are typically attracted to our full-service design, because it is simply that, full service, down to final touches, such as accessorizing and home organization,” she says. “Remember, design is a process to be enjoyed.”

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE Quartz has been a game changer in the stone world. Aside from it being highly functional, it offers many options that replicate the look of natural stone with the durability of man-made stone. Highly resistant to heat, stains and etching, quartz is a perfect fit in any kitchen or bath.

LX_CH60_SS_TIR_FlemmingInteriors_eg.indd 1

The top-ranking requests within my full-service projects would be in kitchens and bathrooms, then rooftops and balcony spaces. Living in Chicago, space can be very valuable. For our kitchen and bathroom requests, clients are looking for pieces that serve multiple purposes or those with smart storage solutions. Also, since Chicago is known for being cold most of the year, clients want to use their outdoor spaces for as long as possible when it is warm, so they want it to be an extension of their indoor living space.

1. The addition to this kitchen allowed for more storage and a bar area. 2. Once broken up by a peninsula in the middle of the space, this kitchen has been elevated with loads of storage, a desk area and an eat-in kitchen. 3. This guest bathroom once included a small vanity on a large wall, but was recently upgraded with a floating quartz vanity and built-ins for storage. 2

OLD MADE NEW AGAIN

We are seeing an uptick in renovation projects for homes that were built in the late 1990s to early 2000s. This includes updates to interior finishes, as well as additions and renovations that rethink the open-concept floor plan. “There seems to be a resurgence of intimacy and desire for rooms that respond to a more human scale,” Harting says. “We are reconfiguring and redefining the ever-popular great room and vaulted ceilings with more thoughtful details and textures.”

GTH ARCHITECTS 847.715.9395 | gtharchitects.com |

gtharchitects

GTH Architects puts the phrase, “teamwork makes the dream work,” into practice in more ways than one. The first initial of the last names of its principals, president Jeffry L. Harting, vice president Betsy Gensburg and architect John Toniolo, forms the “GTH” in the firm’s name. While individually, each brings a distinct expertise to the table, collectively, they offer wide-ranging solutions. “We bring interior design, architecture and landscape architecture together under one entity, creating homes that are thoughtfully planned and respectful of these intertwined elements,” Harting says. Founded on the principle of providing unlimited design services, the team views itself as a custom tailor, creating one-of-a-kind designs regardless of scope, style or budget. Central to their success, they say, is listening. “Building that fabric from initial sketch through material selection ensures clients understand that each decision has purpose, and nothing is taken for granted.”

LX_CH60_SS_TIR_GTHArchitects_eg.indd 1

We are seeing a return to the classics for flooring materials and wall tiles. However, these materials are being reinvented with more finishes, patterns and insets in brushed brass, chrome and other materials. As clients open up to being more edgy and less ‘gray,’ we are seeing interiors, fixtures and fittings become more eclectic, sexy and daring.

1. Creating sight lines with segmented hallways and galleries allows for sequential experiences and details. 2. Here, soft curves become ceiling treatments, introducing much-needed unadorned details and light into this room. 3. Sight lines and defined spaces that let rooms flow seamlessly are more crucial than the overly redundant “open concept” application. Bold and daring trim colors offer drama and crisp, refined detail.

Steps to success. 1. We first do a site visit with the client and my architect 2. Next, we develop floor plans 3. Once approved, we create the elevation view as well as three-dimensional and virtual reality images to finalize our vision for the project

When asked what Heartstone Custom Builders’ signature product or service is, owner Steve Melnick is quick to respond. “Stately homes with transitional spaces such as three-season rooms, garden rooms and outdoor covered spaces for grilling and lounging.” Sounds like an apt description of a dream home conceived by the luxury builder. “We built our first custom home almost 20 years ago and have continued to strive to build the highest-quality homes in our area, always putting the customer first,” Melnick says. Bringing the customers into the fold from day one, Melnick and his team use three-dimensional renderings to help clients visualize their space, using virtual reality in some cases to bring the designs to life. In Chicago specifically, large kitchen and master bath renovations are among Heartstone’s most popular projects, as well as three-season rooms with radiant-heated floors and removable glass panes, and adding square footage for larger family rooms and bedrooms.

Some of my favorite spaces to renovate are the smallest. Foyers and powder rooms are extremely impactful. It’s a great way to make a bold design statement and add a little drama without having to commit to it in a larger common area. A fabulous foyer sets the mood for guests entering the home. “Who doesn’t want to feel like they are inside a little jewel box,” Kole says.

JENAMI DESIGNS 312.480.0404 | jenamidesigns.com |

jenamidesigns

When first meeting with clients, designer Jennifer Kole asks them to tell their story through writing exercises and a simple question-and-answer session. Where in the house do they like to relax? Do they have formal or casual dinners? Do they like to watch TV at night? Which family members hang out in which rooms? “After taking these into consideration, I immediately start with a vision board and it unfolds organically from there,” she says. This customized approach reflects Kole and her firm Jenami Designs’ boutique work, often described as original, timeless and unique. “I operate more like a high-end boutique than a mass-marketed department store,” she says. “Great interior design goes far beyond selecting beautiful furnishings and making sure placement is correct. It’s about creating a home. I take my clients’ personality, taste and comfort level very seriously … and help gently guide them out of their comfort zone to create a one-of-a-kind space.” Bespoke in every way.

LX_CH60_SS_TIR_JenamiDesigns_eg.indd 1

Living through a renovation can definitely be trying. I try to remind my clients to keep their eye on the bigger picture during stressful times. A construction project may last a couple of months, but your dream space lasts forever. A good bottle of wine and keeping a copy of your vision board on hand helps too!

1. To get the ink blue-black hue sought for these stately kitchen cabinets, Kole opted for a custom paint color, which provided the perfect balance of color for this Lincoln Park remodel. 2. Black and white doesn’t have to be basic. Here, it adds monochromatic drama to a small-scale foyer by layering the space with patterns and texture. 3. To accommodate the client’s request for space for family gatherings, homework and art projects, Kole customized a multifunctional area with plenty of seating and storage. Commercial Repurposing Chicago’s fast-paced environment creates a revolving door, with old companies closing and new faces taking their place. Thus, we can reconfigure an auto garage into a restaurant, and still stay on budget.

Founders of KitchenLab Interiors, Rebekah Zaveloff and John “Nick” Nichols met in the restaurant business 20 years ago, and for them, hospitality is still at the core of every renovation and design project. “We continue to work in the hospitality business, helping our clients create spaces where they will welcome friends and family,” says Zaveloff, director of design of KitchenLab Interiors. “For us, the kitchen is our lab, our true living room, where we break bread, pour wine, laugh, plan and dream.” The design team at KitchenLab Interiors strives to create spaces that make people feel welcome. “We listen to our clients and to the home itself, looking for details, proportions and other cues that help direct the renovation,” she says.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING Many of the projects we are engaged in are existing, period homes with their own history. Taking cues from the style and period of the home provides a reference point from which to work. A great example is matching existing millwork when adding space or reconfiguring an existing room.

Homeowners who are embarking on a renovation should take the time to interview multiple firms before hiring. There are many great companies working in our space, however, having a personality and style fit are extremely important, and trust is imperative. We bring the collective experience of well over 100 renovation projects to each client and our relationships with our clients and vendors continue with our clients long after the project ends, many times to other homes or renovations. For us, experience and relationships are the backbone of our firm.

LUXURY EXTRAS Big doesn’t necessarily mean better. Many homeowners who have small- to average-sized master baths will remove the tub entirely and replace it with a custom shower with beautiful tile and the newest in plumbing fixtures. Adding a heated floor element to the master bath floor tile is another luxurious detail that makes a big design impact.

ON PRODUCT PERFORMANCE Always talk to a professional about product performance. Performance and longevity are just as important as the design. Often functionality gets compromised when choosing something more aesthetically pleasing. Climate, high-traffic zones, indoor versus outdoor use are just a few of the many factors that can impact product performance and lifespan. It is essential to consider the technical characteristics of a product, along with its physical beauty, when selecting what will make for a good long-term investment for your property.

Marking its 55th year in business, Materials Marketing has much to celebrate, not to mention its recognition as America’s oldest, largest and only fully integrated fabricator of hand-carved architectural and dimensional stone. “The ability to produce tiles and architectural items from the same stone ensures our differentiated position in the marketplace,” says Paul Makovski, the Chicago showroom manager. Materials Marketing also stands out for its unparalleled design selections and capabilities, from fabricating and quarrying its own stone, to offering a unique range of custom stone and tilework, and quick turnaround times. “The ability to custom craft from over 40 stone options transforms any property into a timeless work of art,” Makovski says. Be it a custom hood, columns, stairs, cladding or furniture, Materials Marketing invites clients to its showrooms as a creative springboard for any project. “Our goal is to bring maximum value to our clients as a true 21st-century manufacturer,” he says.

Our custom stone fireplaces are a popular renovation option. Adding an exterior fireplace is a great way to extend your living space and create a unique gathering room. Our fireplaces are also an excellent way to provide added personality and a beautiful focal point to an interior living room.

Designers Stephen and Janessa Gertz make a perfect blend. The couple married and became business partners in 2016, joining their lives and their business under a new company named MILIEU. Likewise, their design work merges seamlessly too. Their timeless creations combine modern and classic elements for an aesthetic that speaks to today’s homeowners. As a full-service design-build, renovation, demo and construction design firm, MILIEU brings it all to the table, but the Gertzes’ sweet spot is working with other couples and families. “Most couples don’t see eye-to-eye aesthetically or agree on the function for each space,” they say. “The fact that we’re a married couple working together allows us to consider multiple perspectives. We listen to both of their needs and take away our individual interpretations. We then propose designs that speak to both spouses, confirming they were both heard. It’s how we keep the peace in our own marriage and in our clients’ projects.”

eatly nestled among 6 acres of rolling hills and surrounding woodland in Barrington Hills is a graceful contemporary take on a classic Belgian farmhouse. Designed for a family of five and defined by natural light and casual airiness, it’s as befitting of the European countryside as it is of suburban Chicago—which was exactly the goal of the homeowner when the house was in the planning phase. The lady of the house initially looked to her roots when contemplating the type of home she wanted. “My heritage is Scandinavian, but I didn’t want to go that way because it’s too minimal,” she says. “Then, in my research, I kind of fell upon this Belgian farmhouse look.” With that decided, she enlisted designers Kate Marker and Maggie Getz—with whom she works at Marker’s eponymous design firm—as well as architectural designer Patrick Fortelka, builder Patrick Lytle and landscape designer Rudolph Magnani to realize her vision. She explained to them that she wanted the aura of an old structure that had newer additions to it,

LX_CH60_HOM_Gent_12.indd 262

with clean lines and traditional elements. “I didn’t want something that had a precise time stamp,” she explains. For the exterior, Fortelka used a lime-washed brick that would fade with age. Says Lytle, “We wanted to be cognizant of what the brick would look like when it was revealed. We went with a taupe color so that, when it did reveal itself, something nice would come through.” They added to the equation a cedar shake roof and cedar siding, the material being an inherently rot-resistant wood that weathers and darkens over time. “It’s really true to the types of homes in northern Europe,” says Fortelka. “It’s absolutely beautiful.” The natural wood theme continues in the antique pine ceiling beams and white walls partnered with natural whiteoak cabinets, walls and flooring. The result is a unifying feel throughout the home, but Marker was deliberate when it came to defining the spaces. “Sometimes houses feel too open and you don’t know where to gravitate,” says Marker. “This one is open, but it’s grounded. Every room makes sense.”

3/19/20 5:49 PM

Opposite: “We tried to capture as much natural light in the body of the house as we could,” says architectural designer Patrick Fortelka, of the Barrington Hills home he conceived with designers Kate Marker and Maggie Getz. White-oak floors with a European oil finish helped accomplish this. Below: Floor-to-ceiling windows from Windsor Windows & Doors flank a limestone fireplace in the family room. The vintage cowhide sling chair adds a bit of quirkiness while the pair of Lee Industries swivel chairs are a favorite of guests. Says the wife, “They’re deep and comfy with a cool flange detail. People rave about them.”

In the kitchen, Palecek counter stools line the Carrara marbletopped island, above which hang Visual Comfort pendants. Knapp Kitchens fabricated the open metal shelving, which lends an industrial edge.

That means every space is utilized, including the dining room, which, in so many homes, is often largely ignored other than during the holidays. Marker installed a handcrafted oversize table by local artisan Chad Musgraves that expands up to 12 feet and surrounded it with casual chairs covered in stain-resistant fabric that encourages regular family use. “I really wanted a big dining room table where people can linger instead of just wanting to get up and go away,” the wife says. “Also, I can sit there and do my work, enjoy the views and wait for the kids to come walking up the driveway after school.” Marker balanced the lightness of the house with touches of dark colors, among them blue-green pillows and blue-gray lamps in the master bedroom, cognac leather chairs in the family room and charcoal-hued windowpanes throughout. She took it to another level in the cozy den, where deep midnight walls are paired with a tufted velvet sofa of the same color and camel-colored leather armchairs. The final result, the designer says, is “a decidedly moody vibe.” The handsome screened porch, with its cathedral ceiling and prairie views, is a perfect spot for morning coffee and embodies one of Fortelka’s design directives: to create a space where the clients can be integrated into the landscape from the inside of the house, a concept he calls “living in the world.” To achieve this, Magnani selected a number of deerresistant plants with a restrained palette to reflect the style of the home. “The house is an extremely handsome take on a Belgian farmhouse with modern riffs,” he says. “I wanted the landscaping to reflect that with simple modern forms. Repetition of plants with references to classic European formalism set the entire vocabulary of the design.” It’s all part of a three-year landscape plan, which will soon include the planting of indigenous grasses and forbs. “I like how we designed a new home that feels like it has that old history to it,” says Marker. “It looks and feels like it’s been there forever.” It’s a quality that the architect finds equally appealing. Says Fortelka, “There’s almost a question as to, ‘Is this an old house that’s been renovated or is it new?’ I think that concept is kind of magical.”

hana Martin and her husband needed to make a move. As the parents of a 3-year-old and with a baby on the way, they knew their modern Logan Square residence wouldn’t work for their family much longer. But Shana was just fine with leaving the city, since it provided the opportunity to find the perfect house. “I’ve always loved homes from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s, and I knew that if I could find one, that would be my dream scenario,” she says. They discovered a Dutch Colonial farmhouse from the 1930s on the North Shore and, says Shana, “I fell in love with it.” The house had been tastefully renovated with beautiful millwork in the early 2000s and, other than the kitchen, there wasn’t a thing they felt they needed to change. “I knew we would renovate the kitchen at some point down the line,” says Shana, “but we really hit the jackpot.” Fast-forward to two months after moving in, and she couldn’t take it anymore. “The kitchen was ugly, and once we lived in it we realized the functionality didn’t work either,” Shana says. So, she called designer Claire Staszak, who’s been her best friend since high school. “The big thing that spurred Shana was reconfiguring the kitchen layout,” Staszak says. “There was just no way to work with what was already there.” Essentially a long, narrow rectangle, the room had tight passageways and dated honey wood cabinetry. Working with builder Jeffrey Levin, Staszak added a bank of customized floorto-ceiling cabinetry, pull-out cabinets that hide appliances and a concealed pantry. A custom metal range hood with brass straps and rivets creates a focal point and old-world sensibility, as does an island constructed of reclaimed

wood from an 1850s barn. “Shana has really great taste and an incredible design sense, but she is also extremely practical,” Staszak says. “It was always a conversation of: ‘Is it functional?’ And then: ‘Is it beautiful?’ ” As tends to happen on many a design project, once the kitchen was underway, the job evolved into an all-over interiors refresh. Staszak put together a thoughtful color story that embraced the traditional layout and mixed new decor and lighting with the homeowners’ own collection. Shana comes from a family of antique collectors and has the rugs, art and trinkets to show for it. The challenge for her was figuring out how to integrate them into her home. “I grew up going to art and antique shows with my mother, but if I were to put them together myself it would look like a garage sale,” she laughs. So she leaned heavily on her friend to achieve a cohesive look. In the dining room, a table that belonged to Shana’s grandmother is paired with simple linen chairs and an elegant vintage buffet, all of which allow a William Morris green and peach floral wallcovering to take center stage. “I always knew the dining room needed wallpaper,” says Staszak. “As soon as I saw this historical print and updated color palette, I realized it was perfect.” Once the bold print in the dining room was established, the butler’s pantry was given new, moss-green custom cabinetry to create visual flow from the kitchen. In fact, Staszak’s careful consideration of color is evident throughout the home: A pale blue shade graces the entry, while the family room is done in a deep navy and a niche in the front hallway glows a soft lilac. “Part of the reason I had so much fun on this project is because I love light and bright, but I don’t like all-white,” Staszak notes. “There isn’t a crazy amount of color or pattern here—just enough to add personality.” Of course, as the home of a young family, other aspects of the interiors had to be considered as well, such as how the furnishings could hold up to young children and two dogs. Anchored by one of Shana’s vintage rugs, the family room features new furniture upholstered in durable fabric that can withstand daily use. And the living room—while elegant with its antique rug and metal-tile fireplace— welcomes anyone, young or old, to curl up in the reading nook. It is, in the end, a home that perfectly suits the family—a place that was obviously designed by the person who knows her client best. But this comes as no surprise. As Shana says, “I never entertained the thought of doing a renovation without her.”

3/19/20 5:43 PM

Designer Claire Staszak established this home’s eclectic vibe immediately upon entry with walls coated in Farrow & Ball’s Light Blue, an antique bench from South Loop Loft and a Niermann Weeks chandelier.

AMBIENT ART TONY LEWIS’ ABSTRACT GRAPHITE WORKS RECONSIDER THE CONTEXT OF DRAWING. WRITTEN BY MIKKI BRAMMER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN

T

hink of the act of drawing and you’ll likely envisage a pencil. Artist Tony Lewis indeed favors a Caran d’Ache Grafwood 9B graphite pencil for many of his abstract works, but his physical studio is equally as important to his process. “The whole room has been taken over by piles of graphite powder I bring in,” he says. “It has basically gotten to the point where the walls, the floor and every object in that room is completely covered in it.” While his graphite drawings begin with a conceptual idea, their evolution comes when they’ve been set aside and “filtered” through the space and its piles of powder, which range from glittery to soot-like. It’s a lengthy process— one that begins with a drawing and can extend for months or even years. By the nature of the graphite-covered studio, and the fact that Lewis’ limbs are usually covered in it as well, the final works “materialize” as they accumulate marks from their environment. “There’s a lot of movement that happens in the studio and a lot of shifting between drawings,” Lewis explains. “If I want to see a drawing I made six months ago, I’ve got to sift through and flip it out. I put it on the wall and take a look at it, then put it back down. Things are constantly moving.” As such, a drawing isn’t complete until it’s left the studio. There are times when the research he conducts before delving into his work takes longer than the actual course of creating. For a recent exhibition, for example, Lewis did a series of floor drawings inspired by narratives he extracted from the arguments of conservative author William F. Buckley, Jr. during a 1965 debate with James Baldwin. “I spent nine years listening and relistening, writing about it, and analyzing visual footage and audio,” he says. “That was a place for me to start building drawings.” Eventually, Lewis printed out black-and-white screengrabs of Buckley on large pieces of paper, took them to the studio, stored them with other large drawings in progress and allowed the graphite of his studio to collect on them. Though many of his works feature vibrant hues, Lewis says he’s still figuring out his relationship with color. “I started working more heavily with color to see if it could be subordinate to graphite as a material. I don’t really care too much about the certain colors that I end up using.” What’s most important to him is that his works make people think beyond what they are looking at in the moment. As he puts it, “I hope that people can gain a better sense of what drawing is and what drawing can be.”

rchitect Steve Kadlec and designer Jason Hall were sure they knew what they wanted when they began hunting for a weekend retreat in northern Indiana: a modern glass house in the woods. But sometimes you don’t realize what you’re looking for until it is, quite literally, right in front of you. Which is exactly what happened when Kadlec and Hall discovered a traditional Shinglestyle residence on a forested lot, complete with an overgrown English cottage-style garden. “There’s a real romance to the escapism of the house,” Hall says. “When you walk through the front gate and see it, you feel like you’re a million miles away.” “It has a bit of a past,” muses Kadlec. Which is true, to be sure. Originally one of four nearly identical log cabins built on the property in the 1940s, the structure was nearly consumed by fire in 1979 before being reimagined in the late ’80s in the Shingle style, with high ceilings, local Indiana flagstone flooring, and pine wall paneling and ceiling beams. Clerestory windows flood the space with natural daylight, highlighting textural plaster walls with rounded corners. Although they are modernists at heart, the pair riffed off of the rustic elements. “The cabin had this specific character that we weren’t going to change,” Kadlec says. “We allowed ourselves to be a little bit looser and channel a different aesthetic than we might normally.” The couple searched far and wide for furnishings, scouring vintage and antique shops. Their finds, which include a collection of midcentury studio pottery, are commingled with refined pieces from high-end showrooms. And although during the course of nearly two decades together their styles have aligned, that doesn’t mean the two always see eye-to-eye. “If I put three things out, Steve

will come behind me and put two away,” Hall laughs. “The end result is a little more restful.” That restrained approach characterizes the spacious open living and dining area, where a tailored sofa and a sculptural midcentury Egg chair by Arne Jacobsen surround a coffee table made from a large teak root. A Moroccan-inspired longhair wool area rug feels “like a big sweater,” Kadlec notes. “Instead of using a lot of color, we played up the texture.” Such interplay reverberates throughout. A graphic black-andwhite abstract artwork by Chicago artist Lincoln Schatz over the fireplace, for example, faces a set of whimsical antlers over the French doors on the other side of the room. There, bathed in natural daylight from a pair of skylights, a set of wood-framed dining chairs with leather seats complements a concrete table held together by gravity. Employing a light touch, the designers made minimal changes to the kitchen, painting the formerly powder-blue cabinetry an earthy taupe shade, which is accented by new quartz countertops and updated appliances. Likewise, the adjacent screened porch is furnished simply with a pair of teak sofas and a stone-topped dining table underneath an oversize Japanese paper lantern. “When you’re outside at night, the house glows,” Hall observes. “People feel comfort when they walk in.” Paneled in pine with a white-painted beamed ceiling, the master suite is equally cozy. A custom wall-to-wall headboard upholstered in a gray woven wool lends the space a contemporary edge. The sophisticated palette is echoed in the open second-floor loft, where two built-in twin beds flank a glass-topped desk. During the summer, the couple and their guests often sit in the garden, which, like the house, was last renovated more than 30 years ago. Landscape designer Julie deLeon enhanced groves of flowering rhododendrons near the entrance and alongside the enclosed patio out back. After clearing out dead and overgrown trees behind the house, she added a fire pit alongside newly planted and existing white birch trees. A mix of Whitespire birches, Canadian hemlocks and spruce trees enhance the sense of privacy. “It was very important to pay homage to what we inherited,” deLeon says. “This property had soul, and we wanted to pay attention to that.” City dwellers for most of their lives, the couple and their dog, Dolly, spend nearly every weekend at their rural retreat, enjoying winters there just as much as, if not more than, summers. With nothing but time on their hands, they enjoy relaxing, reading and cooking. They even took up breadmaking, a process that takes all day. “When you come out here, you’re leaving distraction behind,” Kadlec says. “It’s made us realize what the weekend is for.”

After being destroyed by a fire in the 1970s, this former log cabin in northern Indiana was rebuilt as a Shingle-style dwelling that is now the vacation home of architect Steve Kadlec and designer Jason Hall. Local Indiana flagstone flows from the front walkway into the entry of the house.

Opposite: Kadlec and Hall quickly discovered that the concrete dining table from Huniford Collection, which is held together by gravity, required a perfectly level floor to avoid mishaps. The wood-framed dining chairs with belted leather seats from Troscan and antlers mounted above the door nod to the rustic setting. Below: Beautifully restored during the previous renovation, the kitchen was simply updated with paint, Caesarstone countertops, a Corian backsplash from DuPont and appliances from ABT Electronics.
