BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

INSPIRATION

Eldorado Stone has been at the forefront of its industry for the past 45 years. From its humble beginnings to the international presence it boasts today, Eldorado’s core philosophy has remained the same—believability. Each of the company’s natural ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ Ăƒ Ă€iÂŤ V>ĂŒi` ĂŒ ĂŒ i w iĂƒĂŒ `iĂŒ> Ăƒ v ĂŒiĂ?ĂŒĂ•Ă€i > ` V Ă€] ĂžiĂŒ offers a lightweight, concrete stone veneer solution. VARIABLE OFFERINGS Inspiration is key to Eldorado Stone’s culture. Every product is designed to evoke a unique sense of space, whether modern, traditional or highly rustic. With 150-plus colors and numerous textures and shapes from which to choose, architects and designers are able to inspire their customers with limitless applications.

MODERN DESIGN The newest of Eldorado’s extensive options, the Modern Collection features 34 new colors and 6 new profiles. Developed to accentuate contemporary `iĂƒ } Ăƒ] ĂŒ iĂƒi ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ ÂŤ> Ă€ Ă€iw i` V Ă€ Ăœ ĂŒ V i> iĂƒ ĂŒ L i ` Ă€ V ĂŒĂ€>ĂƒĂŒ with neighboring elements. Eldorado Stone’s philosophy creates authentic architectural products that transform spaces through color and texture.

ARTISANAL CRAFTSMANSHIP Eldorado Stone products are handcrafted through a detail-oriented, laborintensive process. Each stone is hand-painted by master artisans, infusing multiple layers of color to the stone’s unique textured surface to create a highly authentic appearance.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

CONTRIBUTORS

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

JOANNA MCCLURE

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

Designed by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Aegean collection, available in aluminum and teak, is a study in uncluttered minimalism.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

WHO: Self-proclaimed botany nerd Kimberly Hyde of Beet & Yarrow fills her Instagram with snapshots of her custom arrangements and locally sourced stems. Located at The Source in Denver, Hyde’s floral design studio and mercantile makes for a lively feed that feels at once refined and wild. WHAT: No matter if it’s a lone sprig of lavender or a gaggle of garden roses, Beet & Yarrow’s ’grams are always appealing and informative. Expect picturesque scenes of outdoor excursions, perfectly styled event centerpieces and curated reposts from fellow purveyors of flora.

IN HER WORDS: “We like simple shots with graphic elements, thoughtful compositions and attractive negative space. Flowers and foliage are intrinsically interesting. I think we all still ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at the new buds that come in every week.”

TALKING SHOP WITH CORBIN CLAY

THE AZURE FURNITURE CO.

When did you open? I founded the company in 2009 in an 800-square-foot garage in Boulder. We now operate in 7,000 square feet in Denver and have quadrupled our staff. Tell us about your space. While we do have a small office and showroom, we think of it as the tasting room to our distillery. The real highlight is the craftsmen hard at work producing heirloom-quality furniture. This 1940s warehouse, though, does have all the charm one would expect. Share your mission. It’s simple: to reclaim and transform as many dead pine trees from our beloved Colorado forests as possible. On the horizon? We are expanding our dining and living room collections and are excited to begin offering a full family of bedroom furnishings. azurefurniture.com

THE INSIDER SARAH NEUBERT

Weaver Sarah Neubert’s passion for fiber art is fueled by the captivating beauty of her Rocky Mountain surroundings. “My work is basically an homage to the color palettes and textures found in landscapes and geological forms,” says the artist. Based in Fort Collins, Neubert started creating her handwoven pieces in 2013 and has spent her career honing her unique aesthetic and transforming a seemingly folksy medium into compelling, avant-garde works of art with reach: In addition to wall hangings, she recently completed an already sold-out collection of jewelry. Here, the artist shares what makes Fort Collins a maker’s paradise. sarahneubert.com What’s intriguing you at the moment? The way young, independent designers and craftspeople are making their way to Fort Collins and Colorado as a whole. There is a creative undercurrent in this once-sleepy area that’s very exciting. Must-see gallery: The Downtown Artery is a combined gallery space, artist studio, music venue, recording studio and cafe. It features a really eclectic mix of up-and-coming artists and holds informative events. Ones to watch: My friends Trinity and Laurie at Trove Collective provide home decorating and staging services. I covet their classic-meets-quirky aesthetic. Also, I am in love with the ceramics of Joseph Miranda at Made in Ceramics. Best local shopping? My favorites are Rain Boutique, Sunday Supply Co. and Heyday. Each has a beautiful space offering fresh clothing and unique home goods. Up next: I’m working on a series that’s loosely based on cave formations. I’m interested in the idea of the beauty that exists in hidden places and how that translates to the way we live today, where so much of our lives are on display.

DATE BOOK STEPHEN DYNIA

In the early 1990s, architect Stephen Dynia left a corporate job in New York City and headed west. He established his eponymous architectural practice in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, before expanding his exploration of modern home design in nature right in Denver. His distinguished firm is responsible for The Source, an 1880s brick foundry turned buzzing artisan food market in the RiNo neighborhood. The industrial design of the building was created to reflect the city’s vibrant spirit and cultivate a creative community. This project illustrates Dynia’s commitment to innovative and sustainable architectural solutions across a myriad of building categories. “Over the last 10 years, the perception of the community has radically shifted,” says Dynia of the city. “Denver is full of vibrant neighborhoods, rich with the varied fabric of new and old structures.” Read below for Dynia’s take on Denver’s best. dynia.com 9 a.m. Start your day at Black Black Coffee located on the Taxi campus in RiNo. The Denver coffee scene is exploding in this neighborhood. As a coffee purist, I tend to order a doppio espresso. 10 a.m. Grab an early brunch at Comida at The Source. The Taco Trifecta is always a palate pleaser with its unique flavor combinations. 11 a.m. Head south to wander around the Clyfford Still Museum. From an architectural standpoint, it’s one of my favorite buildings in the city. 12 p.m. Walk over to the Denver Art Museum and dip into The Shop at the Hamilton Building, Daniel Libeskind’s addition to the museum complex. Along with being an art lover, I find that museum shops are great for discovering unique decorative items, gifts and books, and this is Denver’s best. 1 p.m. Continue south to explore the diverse collection of galleries in the Art District on Santa Fe. One of my favorites is the Space Gallery for contemporary art and exceptional 126 / LUXESOURCE.COM

events. Try to come back on a Friday night for the area’s beloved First Friday Art Walk. 2 p.m. Get your shopping fix on South Broadway. I love Steadbrook, a men’s clothing store, for its minimalist design and wonderful in-store coffee bar. I’ve also recently been scouring the neighborhood and am amazed by the variety of offerings from local Denver makers. 3 p.m. Head back north for a late lunch and more tacos at Tacos al Vapor, located at Washington and 51st. The award-winning taco truck serves traditional Mexican street tacos with zero frills. 4 p.m. Revisit The Source for another espresso at Boxcar Coffee Roasters and discover unique home accessories and art at Svper Ordinary. 5 p.m. Now you’re ready for happy hour. Head straight to The Cooper Lounge in Denver’s recently renovated Union Station. Its sleek and elegant design is not limited to the space itself—every cocktail is a work of art, crafted with precision and presented on a silver tray.

to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

FLORA FLAUNT THE PIECE: Twig Branch Table THE DESIGNER: George Massar for Gregorius Pineo FIND IT: gregoriuspineo.com; hollyhunt.com THE INSPIRATION: As if rooted to the ground in which its placed, the Twig Branch table is lively and playfully complex, assembled of composite stone to make it agreeable both inside and out.

GROWTH SPURT THE PIECE: Domicile G Stool THE DESIGNER: Michael Vanderbyl FIND IT: bolierco.com THE INSPIRATION: Eliciting notes of midcentury modern design with an inflection on African folk art, the Domicile G stool is a mellifluous blend of contemporary and traditional cultures.

ANNA BOND

ARTIST AND PRODUCT DESIGNER RIFLEPAPERCO.COM

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

178 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 180 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

No dinner party is complete without pretty table linens. Fine textiles can transform a table from casual to formal and back again, adding an element of the tailored and well-planned to even the most impromptu gathering. Here, Serena & Lily’s Jewel napkin joins the Chatham napkin and runner and the brand’s raffia placemat and Cove rattan lantern in a dreamy coastal-inspired tablescape. serenaandlily.com 184 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

ALL THE TIPS, TOOLS AND TIDBITS THAT WILL HELP TURN YOUR OWN BACKYARD INTO YOUR NEW FAVORITE RETREAT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

GREEN SCENE As summer descends, more than just perennials are coming to life again: With the longer days and warmer weather, homes across the country are beginning to bloom, unfurling out into handsome outdoor spaces and onto beautifully manicured lawns. It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. On the following pages, go green with some of the season’s prettiest outdoor living spaces.

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

THRILL OF THE

CHAISE

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

TAKE SHELTER

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

What truly makes outdoor spaces exceptional isn’t just natural beauty; though, it’s hard to think of a more serene scene than a private pool secreted away behind extra-tall hedges, like in this handsome setting designed by Los Angeles’ Schuyler Samperton. Instead, it’s the combination of beauty and function (think no prying eyes to ogle that cute two-piece while you’re taking a dip) that keeps inhabitants and visitors alike coming back. samperton.com

The owner of the renowned residential landscape design firm has a list of qualifications for his projects, one of which is cohesion. “An outdoor setting should feel as if it was designed with the house, not as an afterthought,” Browne says. Of his preference in outdoor products, Browne speaks to the versatility of classics. “Our favorite products are made of cast concrete and limestone,” he says. “These materials, which have been used for centuries, still make for stunning and elegant features within a landscape. DESIGNSCAPES COLORADO “We view ourselves as partners with our clients, employees, community and environment,” says Designscapes Colorado owner and CEO Phil Steinhauer. The landscape design, construction and maintenance firm’s philosophy is telling of today’s ideal outdoor living space, a combination of sustainable building, indoor quality and function. “The idea of people moving outdoors is inspiring and gives us the opportunity to create spaces on a larger scale,” Steinhauer says. “There is a desire for the entertaining areas to use products that blend with the style and architecture of the home.”

ACHIEVING OPEN-AIR DESIGN Personalize. An outdoor living space should be a reflection of the homeowner’s individual preferences, adding both character and value to the property. Entertain. “Our clients want usable spaces in which they can accommodate friends and family,” Steinhauer says. Innovate. Natural stones, an expanding variety of plant selections, wireless sound systems and the ability to use your phone to control irrigation, lighting, TV and sound are advancements Steinhauer notes with enthusiasm. Sustain. Utilize and follow water-wise irrigation principles, focus on local products and reuse materials. 1. The natural spa is an extension of the home, enabling relaxation and enjoyment of the nearby creek. 2. A boulder grouping and fire pit create an intimate courtyard. The area enhances the living space and highlights outdoor art. 3. This small stone patio right off the kitchen is the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee. 1

Of the 416 acres, more than half of the development is dedicated to open space, including preserved wetlands and hay meadows. “Summit Sky Ranch is designed to fit into the landscape,” Everist says. “We molded our homes and cabins to the landscape rather than altering the land to accommodate the architecture. The mountain modern design stands apart from the traditional log cabin architecture in the area and features a natural look that complements the raw beauty of the land.” OUTDOOR LIVING

INTERIOR DESIGN / BRANDON QUATTRONE AND MAT SANDERS, CONSORT

T

elluride residents think there’s something spellbinding in the air. Their town, a former mining location, is situated in a box canyon with towering mountain walls and a colossal waterfall. Old mining shacks still dot the landscape, which was also once embedded with lead, copper, gold and silver. “People talk about how there’s some sort of magic released by the minerals in the mountains,” says Brandon Quattrone, who cofounded Los Angeles interior design firm Consort with Mat Sanders. “The idea infiltrates. When you’re here, you’re out of breath because it’s close to ten thousand feet above sea level, but it’s more than that. You feel affected because of the environment; it’s just so intense.” Quattrone and Sanders got to experience Telluride’s bewitching effect regularly in developing the interior design for a modernist ski home belonging to their clients,

a couple with two kids. Doing their due diligence, they traveled there from Los Angeles during each of the four seasons. “The house has a lot of windows,” Sanders says. “We wanted to see how things changed during the year. In wintertime, it’s pure hot white all around you. In the fall, there’s bright yellow everywhere, and in the spring and summer, there’s the most beautiful green.” The surrounding environment is especially prominent, given the home’s remote siting. “The house is the last one on a road that dead-ends into a mountain where a mine used to be,” Quattrone says. “You can’t go any farther.” Clad with wood, stone, metal and glass, the contemporary residence—originally designed by local architect Eric Cummings of E Cummings Architect PC and built by Allison Construction—features a steeply pitched roof and was inspired by a historic local farmhouse-like

The area’s dramatic change of seasons helped inspire the interior design. Outside, the designers took advantage of the house’s remote and picturesque location by outfitting a terrace with seating by Loll Designs.

structure once used as a boardinghouse for miners. “That heritage, the architecture and the surround influenced the colors and textures we chose,” Quattrone says. “Whenever you have such a strong natural palette, you don’t want to introduce too much; we love the high-contrast colors you see in the landscape.” Inspired by the lushness of spring and summer, the designers covered the walls of the den with a deep shade of green Farrow & Ball paint. They then outfitted both the living room and den with cream-and-black wool rugs and sofas covered with vintage steel-colored military canvas. A chocolate-and-cream wool rug fills the dining room with earthy color and texture, as does a vintage rust-hued Indian rug in the entry. “The environment you see through the windows acts like a wallcovering,” Sanders says. “We wanted the interior to be able to transition with the seasons.” In addition to layering texture and adding punches of color to bring the landscape indoors, Quattrone and Sanders also created an interior that feels as though it has been collected over time. “Our clients are very casual, and so is our look,” Sanders says. “Our design was about contrasting the strength of the architecture with livable yet interesting furnishings.” For example, two white-oak coffee tables designed by Gesa Hansen function separately or fit together like puzzle pieces in the living room, which also features a pair of Hans J. Wegner iconic Circle chairs. A John Dickinson-style plaster table with animal leg-like supports lends great whimsy to the entry, and Tom Dixon glass sconces imported from England give the stairway a striking ethereal quality.

Inspired by the spring and summer seasons, the designers chose Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green for the walls of the den. The sectional is by Environment, and the throw pillows are from Hollywood at Home, Lawson-Fenning and Consort, all in Los Angeles.

Below: A custom mirror from Egg Collective in New York hangs in the master bedroom near a chaise lounge by Gina Berschneider. A vintage leather armchair from Lucca Antiques in Los Angeles stands beside a collection of artworks. The vintage kilim rug is from Woven Accents in West Hollywood.

The designers also infused the spaces with one-off handpicked finds. “We love to go to flea markets,” Sanders says. “We have a vendor who sells French linens she hand-washes over and over again. We buy from her and use the fabric to make the softest throw pillow covers.” A variety of African textiles from NK Shop in Los Angeles were also repurposed for sofa pillows in the living room and the sitting area adjacent to the kitchen. “Our design approach is to get the client to trust in the things they love,” Sanders notes. “People shouldn’t think too much about putting things together in the right way. If you follow your instincts, your own taste will tie everything together in a beautiful way.” When it came to selecting artwork for the home, the wife did follow her instincts. “She is adamant about only sourcing artwork from her friends or people she knows,”

Quattrone says. During the design process, the wife took a trip to Marfa, Texas, where she purchased a minimalist sculpture by an artist she met there named Susan York. The piece is displayed in the living room, and an accompanying wall-size print of the sculpture leans in the entry. Also in the entry is a set of graphic black-and-white prints by Christopher Wool. “Most things in the house have sort of a bold punch but are still simple and uncomplicated,” Quattrone explains. “We love that. Our clients do, too.” And for as much as they appreciate cool and comfortable design, Quattrone and Sanders might love the wonder of Telluride’s landscape a little bit more. “It became one of our favorite places,” Quattrone says. “We’ve worked on a lot of homes in different cities and towns and have never fallen in love with a location more.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 241

ADVENTURE SEEKER TAPPING INTO A CHILDHOOD SPENT EXPLORING THE OUTDOORS, ENGLEWOOD ARTIST DOLAN GEIMAN TRANSFORMS FOUND OBJECTS INTO MIXED-MEDIA PIECES THAT INSPIRE A SENSE OF WONDER.

I

’ve always had this overwhelming urge to make things,” says artist Dolan Geiman. Growing up in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Geiman spent hours roaming the grounds of his family’s farm and the woods near their summer cabin looking for potential materials. Like a “miniature scientist,” as he says, he would pluck up intriguing items that caught his eye—a broken butterfly wing, an old leather strap from a horse’s bridle, colored rocks, pieces of pinecones—and bring them home, where he’d turn them into little sculptures or glue them into a journal and contemplate their past lives. “That is kind of the evolution of how I create now,” says Geiman. Indeed, fast forward years later and Geiman’s artistic process hasn’t changed all that much. Today, his Englewood studio overflows like a life-size cabinet of curiosities, with discarded ephemera and found objects that are at once the inspiration and the components for his colorful 2-D and 3-D mixed-media creations. Whether he’s transforming thousands of bits of paper from vintage magazines into portraits of Native Americans or repurposing old knives and blades into the feathers of a swan sculpture, Geiman hopes his narrative work will spark a deeper 244 / LUXESOURCE.COM

discussion about the icons and traditions of America’s past, as well as reignite a sense of adventure and wonder for the great outdoors. Geiman’s own passion for the natural world sprung not just from his outdoorsy upbringing, but also from his time spent as an interpretative naturalist for the USDA Forest Service—a job that left a lasting impression on him. “My work talks a lot about how anthropocentric we are as humans and how we feel like we’re the center of the ecosystem—but we’re not,” he explains. “We’re just a part of it, and in my own way I’m looking to give credit back to nature and the animals.” Though Geiman spent 13 years in Chicago building up his oeuvre alongside his wife, Ali Marie, who handles the administrative end of things, the couple recently relocated to the Denver area, where Geiman has reconnected with the rural lifestyle of his past. “How can one live in Colorado and not be filled to overflowing with its riches?” he notes. “I can literally walk out of my door anytime I want, go over to the mountains for a bit and come back completely rejuvenated. Being able to immediately tap into my inspiration like that has had a profound impact on my work.”

RUSTIC GRANITE, SOPHISTICATED WOODWORK AND FRESH FABRICS DEFINE A HOUSE NEAR DENVER THAT MAXIMIZES ITS SCENIC PROPERTY. WRITTEN BY TATE GUNNERSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY PETER AND KELLEY GIBEON

For a house outside of Denver, architect Douglas M. DeChant incorporated steel accents in the Douglas-fir ceiling of the living room. Designer Janice Fisher selected a commanding Gregorius Pineo chandelier from Kneedler-Fauchère and JJ Custom sofas from John Brooks Incorporated for the space. The rug is from Shaver-Ramsey.

W

hen a professional couple found a sizable acreage in a suburb of Denver, they decided it was the perfect place to build their dream home. To get things started, they called on their designer, Janice Fisher, to help them flesh out some ideas and consult on the choice of architect. After interviewing and bringing on Douglas M. DeChant, and rounding things out with builder Bryan Brubaker and landscape architect Terry Rudolph, the team began to zero in on the aesthetic. “The clients wanted a Colorado-style house, but they didn’t know exactly what that meant and didn’t want a theme house,” Fisher explains about her clients, who had relocated almost two years before from California. “They challenged the design team to present them with that vision.” Collectively, the group decided that a Colorado-style home “was not to be a ski house, a mountain lodge, a ranch house, a cabin or an urban Denver solution,” says DeChant, “but an appropriate hybrid that could speak to those genres and embody Colorado.” The team proceeded to meet frequently throughout the collaborative process to realize just that vision. The property’s mature trees and expansive vistas also played a role in guiding the design. “We knit the home together with the setting,” says DeChant, who worked with senior associate Adam Harrison on the articulated structure designed with deep overhangs on the western exposure and a sheltered courtyard to the east. To further tie it to the locale, the structure was built with granite walls and slate, copper and beetle-kill-pine accents. “We were looking for ways to use materials from the region,” DeChant says. “In addition to the heavy stone, which speaks to the mountain vernacular, we brought in wood and steel structural elements that are a little more urban.” Just outside the front door, for instance, a massive Douglas-fir structural beam includes a vertical steel insert—a detail that can be found on timber columns both inside and outdoors. For the living room ceiling, DeChant incorporated horizontal steel truss chords with sloping timber truss chords to walk the line between rustic and industrial. LUXESOURCE.COM / 251

“Mountain homes typically leave the structure expressed inside,” he says. “It shows strength.” In orienting the house, the architect gave it a primary north-south axis, so “you’re always seeing or at least flirting with the amazing westerly view,” notes DeChant. In addition to defining the structure’s exterior, the granite used for the home’s massive walls also reappears inside to shape the living room fireplace surround and reaches out into the landscape, where it is used for low walls that hold back newly created gardens of lavender, shrub roses and other flowering perennials blooming alongside the swimming pool. “The design was about embracing the opportunities that the architecture provided, as well as the sight lines,” says Rudolph. Just as the sight lines were important to establishing the landscape design, they were also integral to siting the home. Before construction even began, Brubaker

worked with the design team and owners to identify the optimal placement for key rooms based on the mountain vistas. “We set scaffolding up in the general area of the husband’s office, so that he could check out the views,” explains Brubaker. “The architects worked on the design for close to ten months before we actually broke ground.” During that time, the architects designed every door, window trim and molding in the home, which they call a “museum of wood,” for the many species that can be found throughout. “The clients had a wish list,” says Fisher, who worked with DeChant and Harrison to select the various types of woods. “It included cherry, mahogany, walnut and exotic veneers.” The dining room and husband’s office are clad with book-matched, highly polished mahogany, while the walls of the family room are lined with cherry. “And as we were picking out furnishings,” says Fisher, “the clients wanted pieces

with creative inlays, marquetries and other details to complement the interiors.” Fisher notes the walnut dining table with a cherry inlay, for example, that appoints the dining room, which has a floor-to-ceiling limestone-andplaster fireplace with a bespoke bronze relief depicting a mountain scene. A Tibetan rug and draperies made with a Rodolph textile introduce color into the elegant space. “The wife is very traditional, so we tried to use a more current palette in a traditional way,” Fisher explains, noting a botanical tapestry chenille covering the backs of Ebanista dining chairs. In the adjacent living room, Fisher outfitted the expansive space with a hand-forged iron chandelier by Gregorius Pineo that reaches nearly 6 feet across at its widest point. “It anchors the room and pulls your eye up to the steel and wood in the ceiling, which are beautiful details,” she says. Playing off those wood and metal

elements, the designer incorporated a vintage rug and selected fresh fabrics in a palette that brings the outside in. She centered the space with an iron-and-limestone coffee table she had custom-made and flanked it with a pair of sofas upholstered with a celadon chenille. The verdant hue picks up in the kitchen, where Costa Esmeralda granite countertops play off both the custom bleached-walnut cabinetry designed by Hazel Zeller and a handmade ceramic backsplash. In the master bedroom, Fisher shifts to blues by choosing a floral to cover a pair of matching armchairs and having draperies made in a coordinating shade. “We used texture and color to achieve a soothing, comfortable master suite,” she says. Through its blend of rustic and urban, traditional and current, the house resonates with an all-encompassing Colorado style. “We all listened to each other’s viewpoints,” says Fisher, “and it resulted in a beautiful house.”

A walnut ceiling brings the structure’s fine wood detailing into the master bedroom, as does a walnut bed by Ebanista. A pair of chairs covered with Coraggio fabric offers comfortable seating in front of the fireplace. The drapery fabric is by Cowtan & Tout from Egg & Dart, Ltd.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ITS UNIQUE RIVERSIDE SETTING, AN ASPEN HOME IS OPENED UP TO CREATE AN INDOOR-OUTDOOR ATMOSPHERE WITH COMMANDING MOUNTAIN VIEWS. WRITTEN BY LINDA HAYES / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID O. MARLOW

An Aspen home received a complete transformation by architects Bill Poss and Julie Maple. New exterior materials include Western red cedar siding installed by Colorado Carpentry, garage doors anchored in quartzite supplied and installed by Gallegos and clear glass rails that reveal a spacious upper-level deck.

D

esigner Lynni Hutton is emphatic about timing. “When we start a project, we always tell people not to rush into it, to take their time if things come up along the way,” she says. “That way, you can do everything properly and get it right.” Such was the case with Susan and Jon Diamond, a Florida-based couple who had been using their Aspen vacation home in its original state for years before they got the itch to make some changes. “It was chalet-style with big, beefy furniture,” says Jon, “and after 12 years, we felt that it was time to refresh.” Although they were ready for a change in style, after considering their options and looking at penthouse apartments in downtown Aspen, they couldn’t bring themselves to part with their home’s location. “It was the only single-family home on its part of the block,” says Jon. “It was also on the river and had mountain views.” With that in mind, they set out to keep and reimagine their own home. “We adore Aspen and thought the house was worthy of the investment,” adds Jon. To get things started, the Diamonds called on Hutton, who had worked on the homes of many of their friends in Ohio, where the couple originally hail from, as well as the Colorado houses of some of their family members. Hutton, in turn, called on noted local architect Bill Poss to help with the structure’s much-needed formidable overhaul. The Diamonds had a concept in mind of an open loft-like living space, but as it was, a large winding staircase separated the upper-level living room from a deck facing the mountains, effectively dividing the living space and limiting indoor-outdoor opportunities. “The entire project was predicated on moving the staircase,” says Jon. “If that wasn’t a possibility, we would have moved. We needed an architect who we knew could carry out what we envisioned.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 265

Julie Maple, a principal at Poss’ firm, stepped in to reformulate the home both inside and out. “It’s a unique property, perched over the river in an urban setting,” she explains. “It was important to open the front of the building to the mountain and the back to the sound of the river.” Outside, the home was completely contemporized. Outdated lapped-wood siding was replaced with tongueand-groove Western red cedar, a closed-in upper deck was exposed via sleek glass rails, and the garage was made over with frosted-glass-and-steel doors set in a quartzite base. Landscape architect Ben Morgan reconfigured the entry, and Mariana Tedin Salazar, who had worked with the Diamonds for years, put in flowering gardens of annuals and perennials with white, blue, purple and pink blooms “to give a splash of color,” says Salazar. Carlos Salazar handled the property’s irrigation. Inside, the changes were equally dramatic. Moving the problem stairway off to one side and replacing it with a sleek

new design marked by oak treads and decorative blue-glass panels enabled the reconfiguring of the main upper level. “The clients wanted an open loft-like feel,” says Maple. “And we created a totally open living space.” Adding to the spacious feel, the level opens on one side through 16 feet of glass doors to a deck with views of Aspen Mountain and on the other, a pair of sliding glass doors reveals the river. Topping off the resulting loft-like effect required a feat that builder William H. Baker considered more challenging than dealing with the stairway—replacing the old glulam trusses with new steel versions. “We had to build temporary walls to support the roof, then take out one truss at a time and replace it,” explains Baker, who worked with project manager Andy Braudis. “It was extraordinary.” Adds Hutton: “Poss did a heroic job with the architecture; it’s exactly what the Diamonds had imagined.” Building on that strong architectural start, the designer’s concept for both the interior finishes and furnishings underscored the sleek, airy effect of the newly opened space.

In the master bedroom, Hutton paired a Tatlin bed with an Archipenko nightstand, both by Minotti from Studio Como. Wallto-wall Elizabeth Eakins carpet in a custom color lends texture to the cocoon-like space.

Working with a neutral color palette, Hutton selected custom-finished European white-oak flooring and treated the upper fireplace walls with upholstered-leather panels. Furnishings were lightened up, as well. “My main focus was to get away from the heaviness that existed before and to create seating areas that could be used when the owners entertained, or when it was just the two of them,” she says. A Minotti sectional with cashmere Loro Piana throw pillows provides ample seating before the fireplace, while a custom walnut dining table by Berman Rosetti can be configured to seat as many as 14. For contrast, Hutton installed a striking Pacifica Blue lacquered cabinet system by Florense in the open kitchen. “It isn’t a color you usually see in the mountains,” says Hutton. “I asked the clients, ‘Are you bold enough to go with the blue?’ ” They were. Hutton picks up the shade again with Tech Lighting pendants hanging above the island and in the stripes of the Elizabeth Eakins rug in the nearby sitting area. On the opposite side of the open room, a Saarinen table anchors

Minotti chairs, creating an additional seating area near a bar and the large opening to the deck. “I tried to provide as much warmth and flexibility as possible, without over-furnishing the space,” says Hutton. Additional benefits of relocating the staircase was that the street-level master suite was reconfigured to include a spacious deck, and the formerly window-less master bath was also relocated and opened up. Now, natural light floods the space, and a soaking tub sits beneath a window facing the river. Hutton appointed the bedroom with a custom striped carpet and sleek Minotti bed, and she freshened up the lower-level guest master, guest bedroom and media room with new furnishings, as well. In the end, the success of the project is attributed to the efforts of all involved, by everyone involved. “The owners get credit for having a concept of what they wanted. Lynni and Julie brought wonderful ideas to the table, and Bill Baker provided quality construction,” says Poss. “It was an amazing transformation.”

White-glass-and-walnut vanities by Wetstyle bestow clean lines to the master bathroom, which features glass-tile floors by Interstyle from Decorative Materials. The freestanding tub by MTI features a polished-chrome Axor tub filler; both are from Dahl Plumbing. The window is by Fleetwood Windows & Doors.

FLOOR COVERINGS BY CPA In 1991, Stan and Tandy Stratton realized flooring needs were going unmet, and so began their quest to bring high-quality, fashion-forward carpets and area rugs to their Rocky Mountain region showroom. Today, they source products from around the world and offer a selection that enables designers and homeowners alike to achieve creativity, quality and craftsmanship in floor coverings. Previously the owners of a boat interior manufacturing company, the Strattons understand the role each element plays in creating the overall aesthetic of an environment. “We strive to consider the needs of each individual space, identify the desired style and specify the correct products,” Stan says. “We have a highly skilled in-house art department capable of meeting the needs of the most discriminating customer.” A founding member of the International Design Guild, Floor Coverings by CPA has worked with clients from the Rocky Mountain region to Dubai. With a variety of styles and price ranges in carpeting and area rugs, the company has become known for the luxury brands it represents within its showroom, including Tufenkian, STARK, Samad and Karastan. “We’ve recently expanded our showroom and nearly doubled in size,” Tandy says. “We are in the process of introducing the concept of showrooms within a showroom, in which some of our biggest brands will have individualized spaces showcasing their products. It’s very exciting.” Of the company’s philosophy, Stan says, “It’s very simple. Our intention is to provide every customer with the most beautiful products for their projects, while maintaining high standards of quality and amazing customer service. Our installations have the distinction of the appropriate product being installed by trustworthy professionals that have paid attention to every detail.”

AS K T HE EXPE RT Describe the philosophy behind your firm. My dad said it best: “Under all lies the land ... we must protect it and use it wisely.” We honor this principle while embracing change in inspired ways.

Buz Koelbel President and CEO 5291 East Yale Avenue Denver, Colorado 303.758.3500 info@koelbelco.com koelbelco.com

KOELBEL AND COMPANY For more than 60 years, Koelbel and Company has helped shape the evolution of Colorado real estate by focusing on how Coloradans live, work and play, then creating communities to complement their lifestyles. “This was a revolutionary concept when the company opened its doors in 1952,” says Buz Koelbel, president and CEO of the firm founded by his father, the late Walter A. Koelbel. While Koelbel’s portfolio includes commercial, retail and leading-edge workplace innovations, the company has long been known—and honored in the home building industry—for outstanding custom home communities, such as The Preserve at Greenwood Village. Launched in 1990, The Preserve bucked the contemporary trend for walled-in golf communities, opting instead for aesthetically pleasing landscaped berms surrounding stunning homes and a lovingly protected 55-acre nature preserve that links to miles of walking/cycling trails on Denver’s High Line Canal. Community amenities include a six-acre private pool and tennis center area that is a focal point for swim meets, barbecues and other social activities. Plus, downtown Denver, six public/private golf courses, major shopping venues and charming neighborhood restaurants are all just minutes away. Today, more than a quarter-century later and with only a handful of parcels remaining, The Preserve is still a preferred address for high-end home buyers, thanks in part to a Preferred-Builder/ Design Program that requires collaboration with selected architects and builders who meet stringent criteria. This spring, in Sedalia, south of Denver, Koelbel will launch The Keep, a community of 64 multi-acre country estates with a protected 745-acre open space.

TOP: Only 14 home sites remain at The Preserve, Denver’s premier custom-home community, which comprises 540 acres of one- to two-acre home sites, plus the 45-acre Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve. BOTTOM: Opening for sales in May 2016, The Keep is a community of multi-acre country estates south of Denver, featuring a 745-acre open space.

What are the key influences in your work today? There is just one: delivering what people want—popular urban locations with great access to live, work and play; mountainhome getaways offering Colorado’s best recreation; and unique workplace concepts that promote collaboration. How would you describe your clientele? Very diverse, like our projects; what they do share, however, is the desire for a community and a home that fits their lifestyle and that will serve them well over time.

INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
