ATELIER INTERIOR DESIGN

AT THE CROSS SECTION OF COLOR, PATTERN AND CULTURE Katie Schroder & Erika Rundiks

They often say your home reflects your personality. The same can be said for the work of Atelier Interior Design’s Katie Schroder and Erika Rundiks, whose exuberant personalities shine through every project they complete. Highly visual and creative, they’ve made a name for themselves with their signature mix of color, pattern and culture. Finding beauty in the world is what inspires this dynamic design duo, who travels extensively in search of the people, art, landscape, colors and nature that define different cultures. “Authentic, individual design really drives us and we enjoy the challenge of designing in new ways,” Schroder says. “The merging of the physical world with the personal, cultural and spiritual makes for great interiors.” Boutique in approach with a completely custom feel, Atelier Interior Design believes in pushing the limits of their clients on an aesthetic level. “It’s our job to get our customers to really personalize their space and not be afraid to express that,” Rundiks says. “Design is something that typically gets developed with multiple layers. Beauty is developed when the entire scheme is well supported on all levels.” Business partners for the past 13 years, both enjoy collaborating with the best experts in their respective fields. “We value the vision, experience, craftspeople and contractors in our community,” Schroder says. “Design is collaborative… taking time, inquiry and implementation. The benefits are intrinsic and lasting, creating a quality of living that crosses over into all areas of life.”

FLEETWOOD WINDOWS & DOORS

The ‘Cadillac’ of Sliding Glass Doors Fleetwood Windows & Doors started in 1961 with the vision of being the best aluminum sliding door company in the Western United States. In fact, the company name was inspired by one of Cadillac’s most elite luxury sedans, the Fleetwood, establishing its reputation as the “Cadillac” of sliding glass doors. With engineering at the forefront of Fleetwood’s success, the company has continued to bring innovative design concepts to the manufacturing floor for more than 50 years. From windows and hinge doors, to traditional sliding and multi-slide glass doors, Fleetwood prides itself on designing and manufacturing the finest windows and doors for modern luxury homes through its national, high-end window dealers. Whether for energy savings, comfort and security, weather protection, budget or style, the residential and commercial applications are endless. Ever-connected with the design community, this family-owned and -operated company is rooted in more humble beginnings. “I grew up sweeping floors, making price books and working in the factory,” general manager Mark McCoy says. “But I’ve always had Fleetwood blood coursing through my veins.” Today, Fleetwood’s dedication to architectural integrity and the meticulous refinement of the “little things” has distinctively positioned the company as a true example of the American dream.

“WE CONTINUE TO BE DRIVEN BY ARCHITECTS AS THEY PUSH THE ENVELOPE FOR MORE EXPANSIVE WINDOW AND DOOR SYSTEMS, WITH MORE GLASS AND LESS FRAME.” FLEETWOOD ... LEADING THE WAY IN GREEN With an unwavering commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing, Fleetwood leads the fenestration market with the greenest multi-slide and sliding pocket doors in the United States. “Our aluminum products are manufactured using recycled aluminum and glass, and are offered in inert coatings and finishes,” McCoy says. “To lessen our environmental impact even more, 100 percent of our aluminum scrap is recyclable.” In addition, Fleetwood is the leader in providing LEED-certified homes with “green-friendly” windows and doors! THE SHAPE OF THINGS

I’ve always been fascinated by the built environment— the influence that a single structure, a street or an entire neighborhood can elicit and how that manifests over time. Take Miami Beach, for example, which happens to be the city where I’m drafting this letter. Arguably, architecture is what largely helped evolve this mangroveand-mosquito-laden barrier island into one of America’s most vibrant urban destinations. What began in the early 1900s with developer Carl Fisher’s Mediterranean Revival architecture segued into a tropical adaptation of Art Deco in the ’30s and was enhanced by a defining postwar extravagant Modernism movement pioneered by Morris Lapidus. Today, Miami’s bold, expanding skyline is a progression of those ideas realized through the lens of architecture’s most esteemed names: Herzog & de Meuron, Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, to name a few. In this issue, we give props to architecture’s innovators and icons: We ID five famous house museums to put on your bucket list; shine a spotlight on of-the-moment residential architects; and examine the connection between Los Angeles’ imaginative structures and the art world. As Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” From the residences that we inhabit to the buildings we work in and the public spaces that surround us, design matters.

CONTRIBUTORS

GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

LAURA MOSS Photographer / New York If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? Dubai or Shanghai. I think amazing things are being done in these places. On your design wish list: Furniture pieces that can hide all signs of technology and still be beautiful, as well as a great comfortable chair that is cat-proof. Also, I would love to own the perfect ceiling fan. Having grown up in South Florida without air conditioning, ceiling fans were definitely important, but I find that their design is sometimes lacking. Favorite book on your nightstand: I really love Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. Preferred superpower: The ability to freeze time. Best career advice you’ve received: “It’s freelance—you are free to work with whomever you want.” I would not say it’s the best advice ever, but I do love it as it makes me step back and see how lucky I am to be in such a creative field and not stuck in an office forced to follow a specific career track.

JOANNE FURIO

Writer / San Francisco Whose work are you most influenced by design-wise? Charles and Ray Eames. My kids say that I’m stuck in the 1970s, but it’s midcentury elements that I love the most: low-slung houses, groovy furniture, tropical houseplants, mod clothes, heavy eye makeup and sky-high hair—all of it. Ideal work trip: Being sent on a travel assignment to India, Japan or Mongolia. All my Asian friends tell me I need to go to the Far East. Prized possessions: A Donghia deep armchair I got at a sample sale in New York, my grandmother’s marble column table lamps and a sterling-silver bubble ring from the ’60s that had been my aunt’s. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: Joshua Miele, a member of the board at Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco; he’s blind and creates all these new technologies for the visually impaired. If not a writer, I would be… A landscape architect. I love gardens and stone.

LX_COM13_Contributors.indd 98

NATHAN KIRKMAN Photographer / Chicago My biggest creative influences come from… Anyone that shows a passion and continues to work at it. Who are some of the most fascinating people you’ve come across in your life? Author Ray Bradbury, designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and photographer Tim Hursley are all at the top of my list. I would love to one day own... An Hermès Leica camera, La Cornue’s Château 150 in carbon fiber and a photograph by Larry Sultan. What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self? I would most likely tell myself to take a course on business management—and to buy some Apple stock. Dream assignment: Anything that allows me to travel to new places!

CHRISTINE DEORIO Writer / Denver Design obsession: Benjamin Moore’s Homestead Green paint, which I discovered while visiting floral designer Frances Harjeet’s Queen Anne-style home in Denver. It’s elegant and soothing, especially in a room with lots of soft, natural light. If you could interview anyone, who would it be? Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air radio show, who has spoken with many fascinating people during her career. I’m always impressed by how prepared she is for every interview and by her ability to ask probing questions in such a friendly way. I’d like to ask her how she prepares, how she handles difficult or taciturn guests, and how she stays so well-informed about everything. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? The revitalization of Rust Belt cities. I love a good comeback story. The word “Detroit” used to conjure images of once-magnificent buildings in ruins. Now, many of those buildings are hip restaurants, and the city is coming to be known as “the new Brooklyn” for its influx of creatives and burgeoning art and design scenes.

It’s all in the details for leading architects across the country. For Duncan McRoberts, it’s all about paying tribute to classic masters (above); for Cade Hayes, the nuances of the southwestern landscape lead him to design inspired structures with intriguing aesthetic facets (right). Matthew Grzywinski’s and Matt Berman’s works (opposite, from left to right respectively) stand out for their distinct uses of shapes, colors and materials.

RADAR / ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING HUNTER FLEETWOOD

▼ MELISSA BRILLHART

Los Angeles | fleetwoodfernandez.com

Miami | brillhartarchitecture.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Hunter Fleetwood believes in the power of the built environment on affecting human action and thought. His restaurants, homes and commercial projects, created in conjunction with partner Mariapaz Fernandez-Trillo, demonstrate a forward-thinking—and often whimsical—point of view.

WHY WE LOVE HER: Inspired by everything from childhood woodworking projects to the Shaker structures of New Hampshire, Melissa Brillhart works in tandem with her husband, Jacob, designing homes that place a heavy emphasis on their surrounding contexts. ON THE HORIZON: The couple is currently working on a Bahamian cottage for themselves—a 600-square-foot residence that pulls inspiration from historic Bahamian architecture as well as the Creole Cabinet-Loggia typology—and celebrating the publication of Jacob’s new book, titled Voyage Le Corbusier: Drawing on the Road.

ON THE HORIZON: At the moment, Fleetwood is thrilled about undertaking a residential project for a young family in L.A. that is involved in the arts, which is allowing him to push his creativity to the max. IN HIS WORDS: “While we are supporters of the heightened influx of technology both in the design process and construction methods, on every project we advocate for the inclusion of artisanal quality craftsmanship. When we are successful, you will see form that is handmade and machine-fabricated in juxtaposition. We find it a captivating dichotomy.”

DUNCAN MCROBERTS

Kirkland, WA | mcroberts-associates.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Duncan McRoberts pours over archeological records, measured drawings and books before building a precedent file that invokes the design principles and tectonic characters of the master works he studies. He then crafts work that aims to achieve a perfect balance in composition, beauty and proportion. ON THE HORIZON: McRoberts is designing a boarding school—in classic Oxbridge-style architecture—and a new coastal-traditional neighborhood development on 80 acres in Oregon.

MATTHEW GRZYWINSKI ▲

New York | gp-arch.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: For his architectural works, Matthew Grzywinski embraces sustainability, function and his aesthetic experience to design spaces that exhibit a sumptuous minimalism. His partnership with fellow architect Amador Pons has birthed a newfound design philosophy based on the principles of beauty, innovation and detail. ON THE HORIZON: Grzywinski’s firm is beginning construction on a residential building in London in addition to a new apartment building in the East Village of Manhattan and a structure on the campus of Cambridge University. IN HIS WORDS: “We try not to chase innovation or novelty for its own sake. Our struggle to marry the rigorous with the exuberant yields interesting results.”

LX_COM13_Radar_ArchitectsToWatch.indd 104

IN HIS WORDS: “The value of artistic import lies in an ability to mediate between ourselves and the schema of our life experiences. Our work is meant to promise harmony of place.”

CADE HAYES

Tucson | dustdb.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Cade Hayes founded the firm Dust in 2007 with co-collaborator Jesús Edmundo Robles Jr. and worked diligently to put together a creative team that is deeply connected to its southwestern desert roots. The firm’s architecture, furniture, hardware and jewelry reflect a boundless respect for natural materials and exhibit a serene display of restraint. ON THE HORIZON: Dust is working on its first public work: a pavilion for the Tucson Audubon Society’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds. IN HIS WORDS: “We are not trying to keep up with current thinking or cool trends; we are simply trying to do really thoughtful, sensitive work. We’d rather be classic than new.”

GULLA JONSDOTTIR

Los Angeles | gullajonsdottir.com WHY WE LOVE HER: Icelandic-born Gulla Jonsdottir has a poetic understanding of dynamic forms, leading her to create groundbreaking spatial experiences with her designs. ON THE HORIZON: On the heels of a furniture debut at Salone del Mobile, Jonsdottir is working on projects around the world, including the Macau Roosevelt hotel in China, the Sugar Factory at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, and penthouses in San Francisco. IN HER WORDS: “My first employer was Richard Meier, a great architect with a great sense of geometry, which appealed to my earlier studies of mathematics. Today, I prefer to be more free. There are no straight lines in the human body, so why should there be any in the spaces we occupy?”

JUANCARLOS FERNANDEZ

St. Helena, CA | signumarchitecture.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: With a sincere focus on sustainability, Juancarlos Fernandez and the team behind Signum Architecture create residential and commercial spaces as well as wineries that echo the landscapes in which they reside through the use of natural materials.

SCOTT LINDENAU

Colorado | studiobarchitects.net

ON THE HORIZON: Currently, Fernandez is putting the finishing touches on a home on 40 acres in the hills of St. Helena. The client searched the valley for years to find the perfect property and enlisted Fernandez to create a house unlike any other he’s designed.

WHY WE LOVE HIM: As design principal at Studio B Architecture + Interiors, Scott Lindenau believes in reflective architecture: He creates crafted, modern designs that aim to allow clients to view themselves differently. While Studio B’s ultramodern projects seem grandiose, the firm strives to emulate a covetable, welcoming lifestyle.

IN HIS WORDS: “Our mission is to engage the power of architecture to stir emotion while setting the stage for inspiring living.”

ON THE HORIZON: In conjunction with the team at Studio B, Lindenau is diversifying his work in both location and project type— producing projects in several states, as well as Costa Rica, and working on several residences, a school, a tropical boutique hotel and a recycling waste treatment center.

DAN WHEELER

Chicago | wkarch.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Dan Wheeler leads his firm, Wheeler Kearns Architects, in creating architectural snowflakes, with each design reflecting a remarkably different point of view and energy. Wheeler’s work captures a fresh, modern sensibility, but each project also has a singular focus on the clients’ desires and the overall mission of the site.

MATT BERMAN

New York | workshopapd.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Matt Berman, along with cofounder of Workshop/APD, Andrew Kotchen, crafts public and private spaces that demonstrate a keen understanding of how people interact with design. ON THE HORIZON: On the boards this year for Workshop/APD: a 45,000-square-foot residential tower in the West Village, a new hotel in Washington Heights and summer homes in Bal Harbour, Florida; South Beach; Nantucket, Massachusetts; and the Bahamas, among others. IN HIS WORDS: “Our designs are deeply rooted in the human experience and we look to architects, fashion, history—or even food—for inspiration.”

LX_COM13_Radar_ArchitectsToWatch.indd 106

ON THE HORIZON: Having recently completed work on The Alice, a community engagement space at Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Wheeler is looking forward to a year full of projects dreamed up for a number of diverse clients, including several museum spaces, theaters, schools and homes. IN HIS WORDS: “We just try to do good, thoughtful work and make it emotionally meaningful to a place, to people from all walks of life that encounter it, and to ourselves.”

JONSDOTTIR PHOTO: KHANH RENAUD. FERNANDEZ PHOTO: ADRIÁN GREGORUTTI. WHEELER PHOTO: STEVE HALL, HEDRICH BLESSING. BERMAN PHOTO: DONNA DOTAN. LINDENAU PHOTO: DRAPER WHITE.

IN HIS WORDS: “Our work is clear, direct and devoid of frivolous materials. It’s about conveying a message of clarity and minimalism while reflecting our rigorous process of ‘distillation.’ ”

Los Angeles architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, who redefined beach house living with the Vault House (shown here and at bottom), are also reinventing ways to show art, as with their work on the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” exhibition at LACMA.

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a place for creatives. In your opinion, what makes the city such a popular destination for artists these days? Artists are drawn by the presence of an arts scene: lots of other artists, art schools and the explosion of new galleries. This scene exists

PRODUCED BY MARY ORE

here in part because L.A. is still affordable relative to other art capitals. In some neighborhoods, artists are still able to find houses with garages and large yards for making large works, and in downtown L.A. and some other industrial areas, they can find the kinds of studios that have long

attracted artists: unplanned, sometimes illegal, but spacious and affordable live-work spaces in old warehouses and light industrial buildings. Which neighborhoods are you finding artists migrating to for their living spaces and studios? Currently, they’re migrating to areas in L.A. that are still affordable and have dwelling spaces with room to make art, including parts of downtown L.A. as well as Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Frogtown, Elysian Park and Inglewood. Often, though, these migrations can cause pushback from the existing communities in several of these areas over fears of gentrification. Has this explosion of artistic talent affected the cultural and architectural dynamic of the city? Yes, definitely. We’re seeing a number of architects who are collaborating closely with artists. For example, Jimenez Lai, of Bureau Spectacular, recently collaborated with New York artist Grayson Cox on “Speechbuster / 99 Chairs,” an exhibit commissioned by Storefront for Art and Architecture with a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Peter Zellner’s design for the West Hollywood gallery of Matthew Marks,

Are there any local architects that we should be keeping an eye on? Lorcan O’Herlihy is designing some of the most interesting multifamily dwellings in West Hollywood and Los Angeles, like his most recent, SL11024, in Westwood Village. Tom Wiscombe, too, an architect and teacher at SCI-Arc, is bringing an experimental aesthetic to his projects, including the upcoming, private Main Museum

in downtown L.A. Then, there are Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, from Johnston Marklee, who are designing extremely refined private homes and art spaces, including the Menil Drawing Institute that will open at The Menil Collection in Houston in October. Finally, LA-Más is a firm that aims to improve residential and public spaces in low-income areas but maintains a strong Pop sensibility while doing so. Favorite public buildings in Los Angeles? Studio Jantzen and Behnisch Architekten’s Parking Structure #6 in Santa Monica and Lehrer Architects’ Central Park Recreation Pool in South L.A. top my list. The colorful parking structure reflects city planners’ goal of beautifying an otherwise banal or even ugly building type. Not only is it intended to accommodate large numbers of bikes and electric cars as well as ordinary cars, it has the added feature of a dramatic red staircase on the façade, aimed at encouraging drivers to walk up and down stairs. For his part, Michael Lehrer drew on California artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and their “beautiful coloration,” he says, as well as David Hockney’s “ebullient turquoise water,” when he and his team designed the pool to replace one that had been closed to locals for 12 years. The design was built on a budget but proves that imagination can go a long way in creating an attractive public venue in a community that had long needed one. Why have you chosen radio as your preferred method of communicating with the architecture community? What does this medium add to such a traditionally visual conversation? I was originally drawn to radio because I like asking questions and hearing smart people talk—specifically as it relates to communicating architecture, which is, of course, a visual medium. Paradoxically, radio frees one from images and gives the interviewer time to explore, without visual distraction, the ideas behind and the human impact of buildings.

And by the same token, has the architectural dynamic of the city had any effect on the community of new artists who are now calling it home? I’m seeing some intriguing things happening in museum and gallery design at the moment. For example, the installation that architecture firm Johnston Marklee created for the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” show at LACMA breaks from the tendency to shroud modern and contemporary art in white-painted rooms. The exhibit features a subtly dramatic layout, with a sequence of galleries that move through the artist’s career, denoted by slate gray walls at the start and progressing through time to light gray. Into the walls of these galleries, they’ve cut doorways that line up in a slashing diagonal, making for a moment of surreal visual drama in an otherwise restrained design.

PARKING STRUCTURE

too, is noteworthy and exemplifies California minimalism, while Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, who has worked with many artists, has designed Christie’s brand-new multipurpose flagship space in Beverly Hills. Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of the union between Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena, of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, and artist Sharon Lockhart, who was selected to represent Poland at this year’s Venice Biennale.

WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE IF YOU COULD VISIT YOUR FAVORITE ARCHITECTS AT HOME? THESE FAMOUS DOMICILES-TURNED-MUSEUMS PROVIDE THE ANSWER TO NEARLY EVERY DESIGN LOVER’S MOST BURNING QUESTION. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

FALLINGWATER Mill Run, Pennsylvania Probably the best-known residence on our list, Fallingwater is a testament to everything architecture enthusiasts have come to love about Frank Lloyd Wright: attention-grabbing design that works with and not against its environment. Designed for department-store magnates, the Kaufmann family, Fallingwater is currently the only Wright-designed house that is open to the public with all of its original furniture and artwork on display precisely as they appeared upon the residence’s completion in 1939. REASON TO VISIT: Thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, in collaboration with local arts and architecture organizations, the house provides a variety of immersive, educational experiences through a series of lectures and residencies—so it’s perfect for Wright fans who want a more in-depth look at the architect’s creative process.

EAMES HOUSE Pacific Palisades, California The final home of legendary husbandand-wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames, this midcentury jewel box was a veritable creative playground for the couple thanks to its two-box modular structure: one of which contained their living quarters and the other which functioned as a working studio. Constructed in 1949, the building boasts a limited material palette of glass and steel with warm wooden accents throughout the interiors and pops of green from the verdant environs. REASON TO VISIT: If you’ve ever had the inclination to celebrate the bygone wedding of an envy-inducing couple you’ve never met, each year the Eames Foundation—which is responsible for the supervision of and conservancy efforts for the Pacific Palisades home—hosts a Members Appreciation Day during the week of June 20th, Charles and Ray’s anniversary, complete with guided tours and juried design competitions.

RADAR / ITINERARY FARNSWORTH HOUSE

Plano, Illinois

One of only three residential homes in the United States designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Farnsworth House is considered to be one of the purest examples of the pioneering architect’s bare-bones modern style. Comprised of one sole room, the weekend retreat was originally designed for prominent Chicago nephrologist Dr. Edith Farnsworth with floor-to-ceiling windows that facilitate an easy communion with nature. REASON TO VISIT: You’ll want to make it out to this handsome piece of architectural history before it gets the full Hollywood treatment: Actors Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have recently signed on to appear in a feature film that will fictionalize the highly-speculated-upon relationship between Farnsworth and Mies van der Rohe that developed during the home’s construction.

GROPIUS HOUSE Lincoln, Massachusetts The name of German architect Walter Gropius is nearly synonymous with the movement he is widely regarded to have founded: Bauhaus. And the home he built for himself and his family in Massachusetts may well have been the structure that helped cement the style as part of architecture’s canon. Built in 1938, the house blends traditional New England architectural elements like wood and brick with modernist materials like glass, plaster and chrome and today feels like a perfectly preserved time capsule. REASON TO VISIT: The Gropius House is a sight to behold any time, but when admired at night thanks to monthly events hosted by Historic New England, the organization responsible for the conservation of the property, the home is transformed by the architect’s own innovative lighting scheme.

LX_COM13_Radar_HouseMuseums .indd 130

While The Glass House is only one of 14 structures on late architect Philip Johnson’s massive 49-acre property in Connecticut, it’s easy to see why it’s also the most beloved: its wallless construction makes it feel more like a dream of a house than a house itself. For all its avant-garde flourishes, though, its interior provides a fairly traditional living space inhabited by Johnson himself when he was in residence there from 1949 to 2005. REASON TO VISIT: Although the house is only open to the public May through November, it makes up for lost time with a near-dizzying schedule of events and art exhibits. Last year’s landscape installation by the artist Yayoi Kusama, for example, transformed the property’s newly restored pond into a fluid art gallery thanks to the addition of 1,300 floating steel sculptures.

WHO: Alyssa Westenbroek-Koster, a Boulderbased potter who handmakes platters, serving boards, vases and other clay creations through her ceramics business, AWK Clayworks. WHAT: Instagram followers get a peek at daily life in Westenbroek-Koster’s barn studio. In-progress shots reveal the artist’s materials and process, while images of finished work highlight her minimal, contemporary aesthetic.

IN HER WORDS: “I want my feed to be as authentic as possible: The studio might be dusty, a piece might not have survived the firing process or my dog might be distracting me. I want my followers to have an idea of who I am as an artist. After all, in a sense, I am my work.”

CHECK IN

HOTEL INDIGO DENVER Downtown Denver’s newest boutique hotel is on a mission to help guests have a perfect day in the Mile High City. Completed in February, Hotel Indigo Denver secured an ideal location just steps from Union Station and an easy walk to sites like Coors Field and Larimer Square. The LEED-certified hotel—designed by Atlanta- and Shanghai-based John Portman & Associates—is punctuated by glass walls, perforated-metal screens and a rotunda-like lobby with wood-paneled walls. Inside, 180 guest rooms mix industrial and rustic materials with elements like polished-concrete ceilings and sliding barn-style doors. Visitors may be tempted to stay on grounds thanks to an on-site restaurant, a fitness center and pet-friendly amenities, but Hotel Indigo encourages exploration: A staff of local experts is on hand to tailor itineraries to any interest. indigodenver.com

THE INSIDER ROSS BEARD

When Clay Adams built a wooden dining table for his wife, he didn’t intend to start a business. But requests for commissions began pouring in, and he soon founded Rustic Trades, a handmade furniture company based in Atlanta. In 2015, the small brand expanded west when woodworker Ross Beard, Adams’ brother-in-law, moved to Denver to open a showroom there. Inspired by master craftsman Sam Maloof, Beard uses new and reclaimed materials to produce custom furnishings, from dining tables and desks to sliding barn doors. “It’s remarkable how much enthusiasm there is for design in Colorado,” Beard says. “There is so much appreciation for handmade items, a commitment to local sourcing and a vibrant, growing community of designers and artists who support, encourage and share with one another.” Here, he introduces us to a few of his favorites. rustictradesfurniture.com Go-to tabletop accessories: Sterling & Steel’s high-quality flatware, hand-forged in Salida, has a beautiful modern appeal. I also enjoy the simplicity of Mcbeard Ceramics’ tableware, made in Colorado Springs. And for under the table, I love the highend rugs from Artisan Rug Gallery, which has shops in Crested Butte and Denver; they complement our designs perfectly. For distinctive furnishings: Designwright Studios’ new showroom in the River North Art District is an incredible resource for furnishings. On South Broadway, Reclaimed DesignWorks offers unique reclaimed wood for custom furnishings and flooring and can often trace the lumber back to its source. And I could spend hours at Eron Johnson Antiques on South Lipan Street, which has an extensive collection that includes architectural salvage, paintings and 18th-century furniture. Ones to watch: Jewelry designer Colby June Fulton, the fine art cinematographers behind Basecamp Visual and the Denver Chair Lady, Ashlee Lampshire, who does beautiful custom upholstery. Interior designer Erika Dowe Fitzgerald of Dowe-Studio is doing some really exciting things, and I also love the work of Denver-based Megan Kane Interiors.

KATIE SCHRODER AND ERIKA RUNDIKS Denver’s Atelier Interior Design was founded 12 years ago, but it didn’t take that long for co-owners Katie Schroder and Erika Rundiks to become known for their vibrant, eclectic interiors. “We’re like typecast actresses in that we attract people who want pattern and color,” Rundiks says. Not that they mind: “We believe in pushing our clients’ aesthetic limits,” Schroder adds. “Most people find comfort in designs they’ve seen in magazines, on television or online. It’s our job to get them to personalize their spaces.” Over the years, the pair have seen the Denver design scene evolve from what they describe as an old-world style to a more playful one that complements their aesthetic. Here, the duo lead a tour of old and new Denver landmarks as lively as their designs. atelierid.com 9 a.m. Start the day at Wooden Spoon Café & Bakery, a charming spot in the Highland neighborhood. Order an egg scramble with herbed goat cheese, roasted red peppers and arugula with a cup of coffee. 10 a.m. Head to the American Museum of Western Art to browse the intimate collection of vibrant, evocative art. The museum is housed in the beautiful Navarre Building, which was built in 1880. 11 a.m. Cross the street to The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa to admire the stunning atrium and iconic murals by Colorado painter Allen Tupper True. 12 p.m. Take a 16th Street Free MallRide bus to the beautifully restored Union Station and grab a table at Stoic & Genuine, a Denver

hotspot known for delicious seafood. Sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and bustle of the city. 1 p.m. Browse the shelves at the Tattered Cover Book Store, then go to the Union Station location of lifestyle boutique Bloom by Anuschka to find a great gift or a little something for yourself. 2 p.m. Walk four blocks to Larimer Square for great shopping and people-watching. Pop into Goorin Bros. for a fun hat, John Fluevog for stylish shoes, Timbuk2 for a sleek messenger bag and Victoriana Antique & Fine Jewelry for something pretty. 4 p.m. Stroll down 15th Street to the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and enjoy a relaxing

moment on the rooftop deck before exploring the galleries. The building’s architect, Sir David Adjaye, is someone we have long admired, and his work here is inspiring. 6 p.m. Pull up to the bar at Hop Alley and try the Heaven cocktail, a gin drink. For dinner, order adventurously: salt-and-pepper soft-shell crabs, salad with crispy pig ears, bone-marrow fried rice— every dish is meant to be shared. 8 p.m. Head back to Larimer Street to the Ballpark neighborhood’s historic Airedale building, where the ground floor and basement are occupied by Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, a hip restaurant with live music. The swanky decor and eclectic small-plates menu are reliably fun.

FOR ALL THINGS OUTDOOR LIVING The outdoor room has become a yearround fixture in homes throughout the country, even in mountain-rich communities like Denver, where VerandaBlue has made a name for itself as the area’s premier patio furniture and outdoor accessories showroom. Stocked with hand-selected and designed collections, VerandaBlue also offers complimentary design services to outfit clients’ spaces to perfection. “With the beautiful Colorado weather, we felt there was a need for a year-round patio store. And with options, such as heaters and fire pits, one can extend the seasons they spend outside,” owner Janna Jacobs says. “Ultimately, we love bringing the indoors outside and creating the outdoor oasis of clients’ dreams.” Family-owned VerandaBlue staffs a team of in-house designers who, along with Jacobs, listen to customers’ wants, how they use the space and their lifestyles; then help with special planning to make the patio come to life. “You can find all the same items you would put in your living room, such as lamps, rugs, pillows, artwork, etc., but they’re made to withstand the outdoor elements,” Jacobs says. It’s this constantly evolving and exciting part of the industry that drives VerandaBlue to offer the best outdoor furniture on the market.

“Quality, price, experience! Give the customer a quality product for the best price and create a fabulous experience.”

SYNCHRONICITY BY HUBBARDTON FORGE In the world of design, lighting often plays a supporting role. In the hands of luxury lighting manufacturer Hubbardton Forge, it steals the show. The company’s new line, Synchronicity, puts the spotlight on their sculptural, hand-forged metal with the added elegance of Swarovski crystals. “We were looking for something with a bolder voice,” design director David Kitts says. “To design a fixture with real star power, a la Audrey Hepburn.” With carefully crafted precision and purposeful placement, Hubbardton Forge’s in-house designers cradle the crystals within each fixture, like a fine jewel. In some cases, the crystals take center stage, in others, they’re treated as an accent. “We’re striving for a 50-50 role with crystal and forged elements in a very organic way,” Kitts continues. With myriad residential and commercial applications, Synchronicity captures the heritage of Hubbardton Forge with lighting that plays the lead role in any design.

SYNCHRONICITY + SWAROVSKI A SERENDIPITOUS AFFAIR How did the world’s foremost crystal maker join forces with foremost luxury lighting designer Hubbardton Forge? It was serendipity for Synchronicity. Swarovski approached Hubbardton Forge toward the end of 2015 as they were developing a new way to cut crystal. At the same time, Hubbardton Forge was looking to craft the next statement piece for the home. “Swarovski was the ideal partnership,” Kitts tells. TOP. ZEPHYR Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Zephyr looks back at the defining moments in the company’s history and its game-changing kitchen hoods. In 1997, it was the first manufacturer to bring power ventilation to the modern kitchen, with three undercabinet hoods. By 2001, Zephyr became known for chimney-style, stainless-steel hoods, which remain prominent. Aligned with a design-centric approach, the company partnered with the world’s most influential designers, including Fu-Tung Cheng and Robert Brunner, who balance aesthetics and technology with a masterful eye. Today, Zephyr sets industry standards in technology, through its DCBL Suppression System®, which renders the hood virtually silent and supremely energy-efficient, and its Bloom™ HD and BriteStrip™ LED products. “We continue to elevate the kitchen through design, discovery and care,” president Luke Siow says. WEATHEREND ESTATE FURNITURE No other company embodies quality and durability like Weatherend, the Maine outdoor furniture builder steeped in century-old traditions. Think back to 1905, when landscape architect Hans Heistad worked the coastal properties of several summer estates in Maine. One estate, named Weatherend, was his pride and joy. It is here that he crafted landscapes complemented with outdoor pieces that became the inspiration for Weatherend’s furniture designs. The influence of Heistad, along with boatbuilding skills taught by his father, enabled owner Gil Harper to introduce yacht construction integrity to outdoor furniture. These skills, combined with marine materials, have resulted in Weatherend’s signature curves and finishes that add grace and endurance to any residential or commercial space. “Our yacht-building expertise allows us to create innovative designs that can be customized to any outdoor setting,” Harper says.

WEATHEREND’S COLLECTIONS ESTATE: With 80 to 100 pieces, Weatherend’s original Estate collection is inspired by designs Heistad created while working on the Weatherend and Pulitzer estates from 1905 to 1935. YACHTING: Using curves for comfort, the Yachting collection has a distinctive design with each piece inspired by life on the water. ANGELA ADAMS: When Harper saw well-known textile and furniture designer Angela Adams’ work, he recognized an opportunity to introduce it to the outdoor market. EXPRESSIONS: The unique Expressions collection is a completely custom line that gives clients the opportunity to specify design, shape, color and finish for any “expression” they want. WINDSOR: The company’s newest casual and dining chairs pay homage to the first outdoor furniture brought to the colonies, but with a contemporary spin. *All Weatherend furniture is available at JANUS et Cie showrooms across the country.

The Weatherondack Chair and Ottoman is an award-winning design that brings a fresh look to the Adirondack chair. BOTTOM. Part of a larger set, the Campobello Casual Chair suits any outdoor setting.

LACANTINA DOORS Recognized for the most aesthetically striking and environmentally sound door and window systems in the world, LaCantina Doors bold the rest of this sentence Folding, sliding or swinging, their innovative systems open up spaces and engage the outside, transforming how homeowners interact with their living space. “ ‘LaCantina Life’ is all about the benefits of living in large open spaces surrounded by natural light and open air,” vice president and general manager Lee Maughan says. Furthering this philosophy, LaCantina’s minimal, clean designs and consistent-width stile and rail profiles create balance and symmetry. Dedicated to innovation, LaCantina utilizes the same narrow signature door panel across its product line for a complete and perfectly matching door package. This “perfect match” allows for the same daylight opening and consistent sight lines across all of LaCantina’s systems.

BREAKTHROUGH DOOR + WINDOW DESIGN Pivot: Launching summer 2017, LaCantina’s new Pivot system makes a statement for any large entry or patio door opening, featuring large panels with transom and sidelite options in a full range of materials. Folding: The most versatile, Contemporary Clad features a low-maintenance aluminum exterior with multiple profile options and the warmth of a wood interior. Sliding: LaCantina’s new class of multi-slide doors combines the optimal aesthetics and performance of a high-end lift-slide with the functionality and value of a multi-slide. Swing: The new swing doors create more space than typical single or French doors, and are made using architectural-grade stainless-steel hinges and robust door panels. Screen: LaCantina’s screening systems were the first designed specifically for large openings. Whether for insect protection, transparency, privacy or energy efficiency, its pleated and non-pleated options provide the solution. TOP. Photograph Courtesy of BUILD LLC

Debbie Cahill Turner Design Seattle, WA “With so many of my favorite vendors exhibiting at the show, I always walk away with incredible finds for my clients. Most recently, I found vintage vinyl floor cloths in great color combinations, which I love to use in casual dining spaces, at Spicher and Company. Blush and pink tones, often paired with gold metals and ginkgo motifs in lighting, accessories and furniture, were everywhere. Organic forms inspired by nature were quite popular too. My favorite was Currey & Company’s Forest chandelier with gilded branches dripping in quartz crystal. Since I’m based on the West Coast, I find Las Vegas Market to be one of the most comprehensive and inspiring shows to attend. Download the market app to navigate the show with ease, and make it a point to stop by showrooms with which you’re unfamiliar. You never know what cool, new lines you’ll find.”

Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design Los Angeles, CA “We’ve always found incredible, undiscovered furniture and lighting lines, as well as spectacular tabletop accessory companies, at Las Vegas Market. In addition to shopping for furnishings, we love finding unique styling details, such as stunning drapery hardware, exquisite bed linens, beautiful stemware and more. We’ve also witnessed many trends evolve at the show, from the wave of linen fabric upholstery and French napkin trends, to bold ethnic rug collections and hospitality quality furnishings. We’re constantly surprised by our new finds each season. Don’t miss a thing, map out the World Market Center and allow for extra time to explore. You’re guaranteed to always find something. Truly, Las Vegas Market is a smart design resource with so much to offer for a whole design project.”

ADG San Francisco, CA “The sheer volume of resources available to designers at Las Vegas Market is mind-boggling. Each season there are more and more innovations and new products that we have never seen before, which is always exciting. Since it’s hosted in Las Vegas, there’s a level of excitement and energy like no other show. My most recent favorite product finds are the stylish and edgy CASEGOODS collection at SHO MODERN and the breadth of luxury home accessories at Noir. I’m always inspired by elegant materials and meticulous craftsmanship, and love seeing the trend of custom requests and collaborations between designers and vendors continue—no matter what the product is. To maximize your time at the show, make sure you have a list of “not to be missed” vendors and remember to bring a ton of business cards. As much as the show is about sourcing, it’s also about networking.”

Las Vegas Market is open to the trade only, July 30 – August 3, 2017. Don’t miss the Las Vegas Market and Luxe Interiors + Design’s “Ahead of the Curve” trend presentation on August 1st! Register online at lasvegasmarket.com

ANDREA COCHRAN

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT ACOCHRAN.COM

At first sight: The Radiant lamps are elegant and timeless, perfectly reflecting Janice Feldman’s personal vision. I love how the carved surfaces contrast with the simplicity of the orbs, resulting in this beautifully crafted texture juxtaposed with minimal design. On the job: My work has always been grounded in modernism and minimalist art; I am interested in the perception of nature and natural phenomena in relation to more structured forms. In the daylight… These lamps look like elegant stone sculptures, solid and weighty. At night, they are transformed into lanterns, with an airiness that belies the materiality of the stone—I’m reminded of the paper lanterns you see in the Japanese tōrō nagashi ceremony. At home: The subtle genius of these lamps is their versatility. They could stand on a table beautifully but could also effectively illuminate the small corners of a garden.

FIRST MATES THE PIECES: Radiant Double Knitting Ball and Radiant Knitting Ball THE DESIGNER: Janus et Cie FIND IT: janusetcie.com THE INSPIRATION: Taking their cue from the texture of yarn, the Radiant lamps are actually constructed of natural, undyed sandstone and beam from within, capable of casting an enchanting glow without being defined by the space in which they reside. Their versatility encourages a well-lived—and stylish—life among the indoors and outdoors alike, a Janus et Cie trademark.

KNOTS LANDING THE PIECES: Criss Cross Outdoor Pillows in Charcoal (far left) and True Blue, and Mr. Rowe Outdoor Pillow in Green/Blue THE DESIGNER: Alex Mason FIND IT: ferrickmason.com THE INSPIRATION: Perennially cool and distinctly fresh are just a few thoughts that come to mind when dreaming about a Ferrick Mason textile, and the same is certainly true with the hip and artful brand’s inaugural outdoor collection. Thoughtfully picked from their existing indoor line, Criss Cross—a simple doodle reinvented into a perfect coordinate—and Mr. Rowe—a masculine design with a twist that was inspired by a dear friend—are the festive outdoor accents you didn’t know you needed.

LX_COM13_Market_Spotlight.indd 170

NAOMI SANDERS LANDSCAPE DESIGNER NAOMISANDERS.COM

At first sight: Alex Mason’s designs are as thoughtful and elegant as they are fresh and playful. Compared to previous collections, however, these patterns are a little more graphic and handsome, inspired by strong geometry over a more whimsical, natural form. As a landscape designer… These accent pillows appeal to me not only for their ability to complement a wide variety of garden styles—traditional, Zen or modern—but they’d also pair well with other patterns, textures and colors. Though a bit more contemporary and universal in style… Both of these patterns bring the art of Japanese shibori to mind, a style and mood that I’m constantly mindful about integrating into outdoor spaces. I’m wholly attracted to… Gardens that combine structured, architectural form with native, seasonal and wild plantings: I’m moved by landscapes that elevate one’s understanding of the natural process.

3/21/17 11:47 AM

SECOND WIND THE PIECE: Maia Relax Armchair THE DESIGNER: Patricia Urquiola FIND IT: kettal.com THE INSPIRATION: Known for its innovative yet stylish handcrafted designs, Barcelona-based Kettal partners only with the best—Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola included. Urquiola’s Relax armchair, part of her Maia collection for the international brand, is infused with modernity and lightness and breaks new ground on archtypical outdoor furnishings through the use of geometric patterns, high-tech braided fibers and a wide aluminum frame. The result is just as stellar as the collaboration itself: an exploration and reimagining of outdoor furniture to a distinctly chicer level.

MATT WITTMAN & JODY ESTES

ARCHITECT AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNER WITTMAN-ESTES.COM

At first sight… Our initial impression of the Maia Relax armchair is one of weightlessness. The chair’s lightness lends a breezy informality that works to balance its sculptural and prismatic form. With a minimal and functional spirit… The chair nevertheless appears comfortable—and almost playful. Like Kettal… We err toward clean, crisp designs that complement modern architecture, so we appreciate how Patricia Urquiola and the brand are mindful of tradition—in both form and material—but smart in cleverly creating fresh pieces that adhere to today’s needs and experiences. On the job: We also enjoy designing spaces that are functional and not overly complicated; we anticipate the movement of the people in it and, rather than attempting to control it, we work with that natural movement and flow. At home: We see this piece living at a tropical resort or in a modern patio setting—not overly structured but intentional, with an abundance of comfort and coolness.

MARKET / SPOTLIGHT

TIGHT ROPE THE PIECE: Custom Plain Weave Shore Rug THE DESIGNER: Louie Rigano and Gil Muller FIND IT: shorerugs.com THE INSPIRATION: London design duo Louie Rigano and Gil Muller consider it their mission to create inspired designs that are as beautiful as they are functional. Their brainchild, Shore Rugs, breaks free from the traditional rug vernacular by using custom-engineered silicone cords to fashion products with a high domestic appeal, indoors and out. Combine that allure with their penchant for brilliant color palettes, like this custom ombre design, and prepare to experience, visually and tangibly, a rug like no other.

RYAN KETTELKAMP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT KETTELKAMP2.COM

At first sight: I was drawn to the chunky, bold weave of this custom rug. It introduces a profoundly noticeable texture into the piece; you immediately sense substance and durability but the interplay of color introduces an artful playfulness. On the job: I particularly like the idea of contrasts in garden designs—wild and exuberant plantings within a formal layout and areas of shade contrasted with open bright sunny spots in a garden—and routinely stress the importance of good lines, ones that pull you into an outdoor environment and beg you to come and explore. It’s important that a well-conceived garden speak to you in this way. Old and new: Shore Rugs’ use of technologically advanced materials in a way that harks back to the long tradition of handwork is admirable. The actual material also communicates an ease of maintenance, which is key for the outdoors. Landscape architecture… Weaves all my interests—science, art, horticulture, craft, design, technology, history and the outdoors—into a cohesive whole, coincidentally not unlike one of these rugs.

JANICE PARKER

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT JANICEPARKER.COM

At first sight: It’s immediately clear how well-crafted these tables are, and beyond that, they read as extremely chic. Dedon’s lines are always visionary and unique, and the same is true of Lorenza Bozzoli’s work. It’s contemporary and very personal; she doesn’t let functionality sacrifice style. Speaking of functionality… This design is just the right height and you can play with configurations. I also love that the tops are natural trays and have drainage slots—versatile and perfect for all things poolside. Mother Nature and the magic of the outdoors… Drew me to landscape design. The natural world has constant change and life cycles. This made sense to me as a child. Of course, once I was deeply engaged, I wanted to play with all the plants and forms and remake reality. Why not a mountain or a lake where there was none? Visually and viscerally… The tables have a lovely lightness to them, and the fact they have three legs reminds me of Noguchi. The art of craft and the love for craft are what this design is all about.

SEA LEVEL THE PIECE: Brixx Side Table Triangular THE DESIGNER: Lorenza Bozzoli FIND IT: dedon.us THE INSPIRATION: As with all things Dedon and all things Lorenza Bozzoli, the Brixx side table, with its sleek powdercoated aluminum top and natural teak legs, elevates the everyday. The Milanese fashion and furniture expert’s marriage with Dedon, and their fine Italian craftsmanship, is nothing short of a refined and understated match made in heaven—resulting in the Brixx table and its collection’s stunning counterparts.

DROP ANCHOR THE PIECE: Windsor Casual Chair THE DESIGNER: Weatherend Estate Furniture FIND IT: weatherend.com THE INSPIRATION: Over a century ago, landscape architect Hans Heistad began designing outdoor landscapes with complementing furniture for seaside properties along the coast of Maine. Among these dreamy coastal estates was Weatherend, and over a hundred years later, Weatherend Estate Furniture continues to produce stately and sophisticated pieces. Using techniques typically found in yacht building, the heritage brand reimagined the Windsor—a contemporary interpretation of the first outdoor chair introduced to America—which celebrates the seating staple’s rich history and ageless design.

EDMUND HOLLANDER

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT HOLLANDERDESIGN.COM

At first sight: I admire the subtle maritime aesthetic that Weatherend often applies to their works. There is something that feels particularly “right” about this design and its exceptional craftsmanship. As a landscape architect… I am especially drawn to the style and flexibility of a design. If you’re going to bring something into your home, indoors or out, these two qualities are paramount. On the job: I greatly enjoy collaborating with designers and architects to create beautiful and environmentally appropriate spaces, ones that harmoniously marry the site and the client, and I feel like this chair would be an easy fit for so many atmospheres. At home: The joinery and overall mood of this piece make the Windsor Casual chair the perfect solution for any space craving an elegant yet rugged piece of furniture. To me, it would seem most at home on a deck overlooking the ocean or atop a posh sailboat or yacht.

WHEN MOTHER NATURE IS THE GUEST OF HONOR IN YOUR HOME’S HARDEST-WORKING SPACES, BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INDOORS AND OUT MELT AWAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

That sunshine and fresh air are a salve for many of life’s ailments is hardly a secret. After all, spending time outdoors is linked to both increased vitamin D production and feelings of happiness. It’s no wonder, then, that designers are bringing nature into the home’s busiest rooms. The latest retractable glass walls and service-style windows blur the line between interior and exterior, providing an often-needed calming connection to the outside world. Whether you’re blessed with a temperate climate yearround, as in Sydney, where this kitchen is located, or you’re forced to make the most of a limited run of good weather, we hope you’ll find inspiration in the following pages. 204 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Sydney’s Smart Design Studio created this open-air kitchen as part of a modern addition to a Federal-style house. Walls of windows and retractable glass doors bring in an abundance of light, which a mirrored backsplash further reflects. As a result, the narrow space feels much larger than it is.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

SMART DESIGN STUDIO Blame it on the mild weather Down Under, but one thing’s for certain when it comes to Australian design: No one does indoor-outdoor spaces quite like the Aussies. Here, interior designer Victoria Judge of Sydney’s Smart Design Studio walks us through this airy minimalist kitchen. smartdesignstudio.com Share your vision. Our climate is conducive to an outdoor lifestyle, and this house facilitates exactly that. The streamlined design features integrated appliances where possible, and the dining table and island are combined to maximize open space. Black-stained timber joinery extends beyond the kitchen to an outdoor eating area.

How much was light a factor in designing this kitchen? The house is on a very narrow plot and surrounded by tall buildings to the south, which forms a kind of cavern, so large windows were important for bringing light into the room. By providing a double-height space in the rear we were able to flood the room in bright light all day long.

PHOTO: SHARRIN REES.

What are some tricks for a seamless indoor-outdoor space? Folding doors are great, allowing rooms to fully open to the outdoors. Opting for a continuous floor finish, such as the travertine used here, between indoors and out helps. By reducing the amount of finishes, you can eliminate visual clutter and the division of spaces.

Elegant fine linens and casual alfresco dining generally don’t mix. Enter oilcloth linen: The durable, waterproof material stands up to spills and splashes and makes a pretty placemat to boot, as in the Parentesi (shown here in Sage) from La Gallina Matta. Its unique shape and delicate embroidery prove that practicality and style can go hand in hand. lagallinamatta.it

To transform a Tuscan-style villa into a modern country home, architect Ken Linsteadt relied on an earthy, natural palette and opened up every room to the surrounding Sonoma, California, landscape. Moving the kitchen to the opposite end of the house so it could face the pool terrace created more of a connection to the outside. “The oversize steel-and-glass windows tilt up, providing an expansive view and easy access to the pool, as well as shade over the bar on a sunny day,” he says. kenlinsteadt.com

COOL & CONNECTED For this modern kitchen, designer Julia Treuel opted for a crisp, monochromatic look that wouldn’t compete with the lush greenery in the backyard. She then installed bifold windows and a servery for a seamless connection to the garden. “Not only is it lovely to have fresh air flowing through this zone, but the house feels larger for it,” says Treuel. abbeycollective.com.au

While the bateau-style soaking tub and lively patterned floor command attention in this striking bath in Cape Town, South Africa, the real draw is the scene just outside the French doors. That’s why designer Kim Stephen kept the palette simple.

One look at this lovely bath designed by interiors talent Kim Stephen, and it’s easy to imagine your daily struggle to get out of bed and start your pre-work routine all but disappearing. Opening onto a private hedged garden with mountain views, it’s the perfect spot for luxuriating in the tub and taking in the gorgeous landscape. “With so much greenery just outside the door, I decided to stick to a palette of black and white to keep it serene,” says Stephen. “Bringing some plant life into the space was also important to underscore the connection to nature, and the lushness of a banana palm seemed the perfect tropical touch,” she says. kimstephen.com

AMERICAN IDYLL Sipping rosÊ on the patio, stealing a nap in a hammock, dining alfresco under the stars—summer provides no shortage of opportunities for simple pleasures. Thanks to the ever-evolving concept of outdoor living, too, warm weather also brings with it more thoughtfully designed spaces to experience those pleasures. Over the last several years, designers have embraced nature in a big way, creating fully loaded outdoor family rooms, elaborate fire pits and wow-worthy pools. Even the once-humble pool house has undergone a dramatic change from utilitarian changing spot to a luxurious destination in itself, as witnessed in this elegant East Hampton, New York, property by Dan Scotti Design. Heavyduty burners deliver up to 25,000 BTUs, making it a powerful addition to any backyard barbecue. Amenities such as a whisper-quiet infrared rotisserie burner and motion-activated under-hood lighting are perfect for post-sundown cookouts, and it comes in 12 signature colors, ranging from classic stainless to the lively orange, Citra, shown here. hestanoutdoor.com

OPEN AIR This Malibu, California, retreat was designed to give its owners a sunny respite from harsh winters on the East Coast, where they are based. To take full advantage of the sweeping coastline views, Studio Bracket oriented the house toward the ocean, and opened it up to create a seamless transition from indoors to outside. “The covered exterior spaces become an extension of the living room and kitchen, increasing the footprint and bringing the casual Malibu lifestyle outdoors,” says designer Wayne Chevalier. studiobracket.com

While it’s probably tempting for landscape architects to cover the countryside in vibrant colors, sometimes a more restricted palette is needed. For this Dutch-inspired house in New Canaan, Connecticut, for example, Doyle Herman Design Associates opted for a more earthy, subdued scheme. “Oversize bluestone leads from the kitchen to the dining terrace, while linear gestures of ornamental grasses and hedges of boxwoods play off the contemporary style of this modern farmhouse,” says principal designer Kathryn Herman. dhda.com

IN THE ROUND It’s hard to top the Mad Men-era fabulousness of the Trousdale Estates section of Beverly Hills: After all, Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin once called the midcentury neighborhood home. To honor that history, Los Angeles-based Elysian Landscapes brought a dose of retro glamour to the backyard of a 1959 glass-and-concrete house by creating this showstopper of a fire pit. “The generous banquette was once a low concrete block wall hidden behind a hedge of bamboo, so we increased the height of the wall and hid speakers in the plantings,” says designer Judy Kameon. “Now, it’s a perfect setting for enjoying cool evenings.” Bring on the s’mores… and martinis! elysianlandscapes.com

Thinking outside of the box takes on a new meaning when you actually punch a hole in that box, which is exactly what Australian designer Carole Whiting did to create this cozy nook. By opening up a wall in the living room to make a niche that’s both window and daybed, Whiting invited more light into the space and gave the eventual inhabitants the option of being simultaneously inside and out. “To contrast with the soft, neutral palette indoors, we made the bed black, which further unifies it with the exterior,” says Whiting. whitingarchitects.com

SWING TIME

9

Perhaps no other perch conveys a playful Bohemian vibe quite like a hanging swing chair. The original bamboo version of this porch staple was designed by Giovanni Travasa in 1958, but the style really caught on in the freewheeling ’60s and ’70s when natural materials were all the rage. Tidelli’s new Painho swing here, designed by Rosenbaum e o Fetiche, is made with nautical rope and high-grade aluminum for indoor or outdoor use and comes in an impressive array of summertime colors—52 to be exact. tidelli.com

LOOKING GLASS

Minimalist architecture demands clean lines, so it’s no wonder the latest technological advancements in glass walls allow for bigger expanses and slimmer frames and stiles. Cero, the newest floor-to-ceiling sliding wall system from NanaWall, boasts the thinnest profile yet, giving way to light-filled spaces that challenge the conventional notions of boundaries between indoors and out. nanawall.com

VIEW TO A THRILL What can compete with a typical Wine Country meal of farm-to-table food and excellent vino? A killer view, of course—like the one at this Healdsburg, California, family ranch designed by Ali Davin of San Francisco-based firm Jute. “To draw the eye outside, we intentionally kept the furnishings sparse so they wouldn’t distract from the scenery,” she says. “The wood ceiling, concrete walls, stone floors, metal chairs and linen curtains keep the look rustic and understated, while Rose Uniacke’s dining table made of pippy oak helps anchor the space and tie it to the natural landscape.” jutehome.com

RESIDENTIAL SYSTEMS

For the last 30-plus years, Residential Systems’ CEO Travis Leo has followed the credo that if a company takes care of its clients and employees first, then the rest will fall into place. And it’s proven successful for the premier provider of home automation and home audiovisual solutions, which has completed projects in more than 5,500 homes and businesses in Colorado and throughout the world. “One of my favorite aspects of the home technology industry is that it’s constantly evolving, shaping the way we live and creating room for innovation,” Leo says. “As the modern lifestyle evolves, so do the devices and technologies that our customers are looking for. While some customers request specific technologies, most are looking for a solution—better sound, a sharper image, increased energy efficiency, a smarter home experience.” Recently, Leo has seen an increased demand for luxury home theaters, lighting control systems and voice-control applications. “Finding the right solution for a given client requires understanding the specifics: their lifestyle, their budget, their home, their needs,” he tells. “It’s about using our experience and expertise to show clients what’s possible, and then tailoring a system to their needs.” To help simplify the home automation maze, Residential Systems created an animated video series and checklist to introduce clients to the basic functions of home technology and help them budget, plan and strategize. How does Leo define a successful project? “A seamless installation, a happy customer and a positive review.” And his greatest success? “Juggling being a business owner, a father, a husband and a community member who gives back.”

What is inspiring you now? Voice control. It’s the fastest-growing trend in smart home technology, so there's a big push for companies to integrate voice-control capabilities into various technologies. It will be interesting to see how that might shift the way we interact with our homes. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? Whether it’s an outdoor sound system that rocks a patio or a custom Lutron lighting control system that simplifies a client’s life, good design can take many different forms. In general, good design is simple to use, easy to understand and incredibly awesome!

YARD WORKS DESIGN

Robert Hahn’s degree in landscape architecture from Penn State University was inspired by his combined passions for the natural world and his innate inclination toward design. Fast-forward 20 years and Hahn has amassed an astounding portfolio as a renowned landscape architect and owner of Yard Works Design. The firm has built a reputation as a leader in Denver’s luxury landscaping market, offering services ranging from landscape design and project management to construction of outdoor kitchens, pools, spas and fireplaces. The company is rooted in a philosophy of sustainable, indigenous designs that consider the natural surroundings in which they are built. “Our projects are influenced and inspired by the natural beauty that can be found throughout Colorado—colors, textures and the grandness found in nature,” Hahn explains. “And our urban projects are influenced by the dynamic and contemporary architectural styles emerging throughout the city.” Communication and flexibility throughout a project are cornerstones of the brand’s success. “We work with clients throughout the design and construction process, and remain their one point of contact,” Hahn says. “Our designers work to create an outdoor space that fits their requirements and budget. Designs are altered throughout to ensure the end product exceeds our clients’ expectations.” Hahn is also quick to dispel any misconceptions about the impact that he intends for his designs. “The designs we create are more than just landscapes,” he says. “They are outdoor spaces where our clients create lasting memories with their loved ones in a space that is designed to enrich their life.”

Life Enhanced Through Art At the intersection of fine craft, contemporary art and design comes Tansey Contemporary—the well-established Santa Fe, New Mexico, gallery making a name and place for itself with its newest location in Denver. Unlike any other gallery in the area, Tansey brings together more than 30 artists from around the world, who work in a variety of mediums, including ceramics, glass, fiber, mixed media, painting and sculpture, with a heavy focus on design. Through the years, gallery owners and program directors Jen and Mike Tansey have developed a strong national following due in part to their participation in art fairs here, and abroad. “We travel extensively and visit all of the major art fairs because of Mike’s involvement in the industry as a majority owner and CEO/Chairman of Art Miami,” Jen says. A shared belief in the importance of art in our daily lives influences the Tansey’s approach to the gallery and artists they represent. “Our program places equal emphasis on how a piece of art is made (quality in execution), and why the artist made it (context and meaning behind the work),” Mike says.

T

om and Sunny Corrigan are intimately familiar with the terrain surrounding Vail Mountain, where they work as ski patrollers. So when they began to search for a house in the area to raise their young children, they knew just what they were looking for. The family had been living in nearby Minturn but wanted a larger home with a modern look that would reflect their alpine surroundings and stand up to their active lifestyle, which includes days filled with skiing, hiking and cycling. “Our lives revolve around the outdoors,” Sunny says. Enter architect Hans Berglund, who had already been in the beginning stages of working with builder Ted Leach—an old friend of Sunny’s—to develop plans for a steep mountainside property fewer than 10 minutes from the slopes. “Houses should reflect the local vernacular in a clean, modern way and use indigenous materials,” Berglund says of his “mountain modern” philosophy. That approach

LX_CO51_HOM_Corrigan_14.indd 251

matched the Corrigans’ own aesthetic, and when Leach introduced them, “the house went from a spec home to a custom home for Tom and Sunny,” Berglund says. As it happens, the lot is up the street from where Sunny’s parents live, and it overlooks a trail the wife has hiked since childhood. “The stars lined up, and the timing was right,” says Leach, who worked with superintendent Greg Johnson and project manager Benno Scheidegger. With the property in place, the rest of the team soon followed as designers Courtney St. John and Amy Casey came on board. The designers selected interior finishes to complement the vertical reclaimed wood cladding the home’s exterior, the exposed I-beams inside and the Colorado sandstone veneer Berglund used to define the foundation, frame the entry and form the back-to-back fireplace and chimneys that face both the great room and the deck outside. “We took our lead from the architecture and tried to make the inside indicative of the elements used on the outside,” St. John says,

A West Elm rug brightens the entry and helps set the tone for the home’s lively palette. A bridge accessed via a sculptural stairway stretches above the front door, by Castlewood Doors and Millwork, and leads to a guest area above the garage.

In the living area, designers Courtney St. John and Amy Casey paired a sofa by Cisco Home with a custom armchair upholstered with an Osborne & Little stripe and a coffee table by Anthropologie. pointing to surfaces such as the oak flooring and reclaimed spruce ceilings. In addition to the home’s architecture, the system of huts used by backcountry skiers in the area also provided an influence on the decor. “Tom and I have always loved the simplistic design of the huts in the 10th Mountain Division,” Sunny says, “and the natural and reclaimed materials we used in our house were inspired by those.” In that same vein, the designers kept the furnishings minimal and functional. “They are modern yet livable, as this is a mountain home,” St. John says. Pieces like a custom-made table and walnut-slab sideboard appear in the dining area, and a streamlined leather-upholstered sofa occupies the living area. Berglund expressed similar motivations. “We wanted to design a home that felt really hunkered down into the site—like it grew up and out of the ground,” he explains. But with pitched ceilings that reach 17 feet at their highest point, along with floor-to-ceiling windows that invite broad views of the Rockies, the architecture soars just as much as it remains grounded. “Simultaneously, we’re trying to connect people to the land and engage them with the sky and the mountains,” the architect says. He also integrated wide eaves to provide shade from the summer sun and environmentally friendly items, including solar panels, to make the house energy-efficient. About midway through the construction process, the couple found out they were expecting their third child. To accommodate the growing family, a guest room on the lower level was transformed into a nursery for the baby. That meant a second-story space, which was intended to be left unfinished and accessible only through the garage, would now become a multipurpose guest area. Berglund revived an earlier design iteration of a stairway and a bridge that stretches above the entry door in the foyer to create

an interior entrance to the newly finished area. “That stair system really makes the house,” Leach says. “Without it, it would have been less interesting.” Tom now counts the stair and bridge among his favorite elements of the residence. “I really love those stairs,” he says, explaining that he can use the connected space to repair skis and bicycles, work out and display the drum set he has had since he was a boy. For Sunny, it’s the expansive deck that stands out as her favorite space. “The furniture Courtney and Amy chose makes it even more spectacular,” she says. Outside and inside, the designers worked with pops of turquoise, yellow and pink to energize the neutral palette. “With all of the rustic materials, Sunny wanted to incorporate those bright colors, and we think it was necessary to add interest,” Casey says, noting items such as a bright stripe covering an armchair in the living area and cheery yellow seat cushions on the outdoor dining chairs. “Having color in the interiors is

LX_CO51_HOM_Corrigan_14.indd 258

representative of the fact that they’re a young, adventurous family,” St. John adds. Gardeners Hayley Gough and Lynsey Majewski, owners of Dragonfly Gardening, followed that lead with potted flowers on the deck. “They’re sun plants with lots of vibrant colors—petunias, verbena, cosmos and calendula,” Gough says. Berglund, meanwhile, worked with colleague Keegan Winkeller to design the initial landscape plan, which Doug Weinheimer of Upper Crust Landscaping installed with a few modifications, including adding a lawn to the backyard. Boulders, native grasses, local aspens and blue spruces reinforce the home’s ties to its surrounds. The Corrigans can now access hiking and mountainbiking trails from their front door. And on top of its dream location, Tom says, the house the team designed is a perfect fit for their family. “We can’t say enough about them,” he says. Sunny agrees, adding, “They nailed our taste and style. They were our A-Team.”

In her Boulder studio, artist Kim Dickey (left) builds and assembles works of abstract potted shrubbery, one with animal faces peeking through (at right). Inspired by the rococo aesthetic tradition of bocage, the artist covers her sculptures, both small and large-scale, with ceramic leaves and other flora.

A

ll gardens, of any kind, represent a theatrical engagement in the world—an illusion that transports us outside of the real and into the ideal,” says Kim Dickey, an artist and professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. Aiming to explore the dichotomy between nature and culture, physical and psychological, Dickey creates fantastical ceramic sculptures, both handheld and monumental in size, that invite contemplation. “Gardens can be about two kinds of landscape: the landscape of interiority and of exteriority simultaneously,” she explains of the concept behind her artwork. “They also represent, for many people, a cultivated place of freedom within the confines of domesticity.” Dickey, who is based in Boulder and represented through Denver’s Robischon Gallery, came to her muse and her material of choice at an early age. “I was incredibly lucky,” she says of discovering clay at the age of 12. “I developed an immediate crush and realized there was something so exciting and unique about it.” Growing up in a household where the arts were encouraged and appreciated was also influential, as was having a mother who is a serious gardener.

“I WANT TO ALLOW THE VIEWER TO SEE THE ENVIRONMENT AS THE SUBJECT, NOT THE OBJECT, OF THE PORTRAIT.”

“I spent a lot of years on my knees weeding next to her,” Dickey recalls. “I began to not only understand how she thought about the garden psychologically and aesthetically, but I also developed a language of form.” Today, Dickey looks at gardens “as a model of how the world is or could be constructed,” she says. Her own eye-catching outdoor-inspired works are marked by thousands of pieces— which she hand-builds or casts from glazed terra cotta, porcelain or white stoneware—that cover a single form. Her style is akin to the rococo aesthetic tradition of bocage, which the artist discovered during a teaching stint in Italy. “It’s the encrusting of functional objects, like candlesticks, with thousands of believable flowers all made from porcelain,” she explains. The effect lends a theatrical flair to mundane objects. Through her intricate technique, Dickey flips the relationship between decorative and critical by transforming background into foreground. Her Mille-fleur, for instance, is a 20-by-7-foot mosaic of glazed terra-cotta lilies, thistle, wild orchids and other flowers, inspired by the meadow backdrops of the Unicorn Tapestries at The Met Cloisters. On display at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

in Arkansas, her dreamlike depiction is set against natural shrubbery, inviting viewers to question the differences between the ideal and the real. Now, Dickey is working on a sculptural mural, A Sixth Sense, to be displayed beginning in June at the Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud’s “C’est le bouquet!” exhibition in Limoges, France. Her contemporary amalgam of the backgrounds depicted in the 16th-century tapestries The Lady and the Unicorn will be a 6-by-9-foot crimson meadow of more than 3,000 sculpted terracotta quatrefoil leaves. As one nears the sculpture, the painted piece will seem to pixelate in a mirage-like effect. “I want to allow the viewer to see the environment as the subject, not the object, of the portrait,” Dickey explains. “I aim to do so by removing the human actors central to these tapestries, leaving behind the teeming flora and fauna as the featured performers.” Given the intricacy behind each work, Dickey’s pieces can take between one to six months to complete. But the artist finds the process to be its own reward. “I work at night, when everyone else goes to sleep,” she says. “It means I get very little sleep, but it’s a trade-off I’m willing to make. As the world quiets down, my own dream world opens up. Nights are magical times.”

Dickey, who uses a sketchbook (above, left) for drawing and thinking through ideas for new pieces, works on a large majolica tile painting (opposite) and an in-progress sculpture (above, right) in her studio. To keep the sculpture from drying out, she covers it partly with plastic while attaching leaves to the top portion.

L

imitations can often breed opportunities, and that was certainly the case with the two-story dwelling designers Eric Mandil and Sean Hughes, architect Brian Ojala and builder Aaron Ojala realized on a tight urban lot in Denver’s Cherry Creek North neighborhood. Smitten with the land’s central location, an empty-nester couple looked to Brian Ojala to create a light and modern structure—an ambitious vision, as the lot was adjacent to a two-story duplex. “It was very difficult to get light on the land, because the building casts a large shadow on the property,” the architect explains. “The couple really wanted an oasis, which was quite a challenge.” But it was a request Brian Ojala was able to meet handily. After several iterations, he perfected a striking modern design anchored by a two-story atrium. The architect

capped the space with a prominent skylight, which allows natural light to spill into the front entry. “We also created a 2-foot-wide by 30-foot-long open slice on the floor of the second story, so the light comes through the ceiling, past the second floor and into the first,” he says. Thanks to these elements, the lower-level open kitchen and dining area are recipients of bright sunlight. As the structure draws in natural light, it also reaches outside to engage its surroundings. Marked by exposed steel structural beams, the interior boasts thick marble walls that extend past the exterior envelope to define outdoor living areas. “Every room has a relief to the outside,” says Brian Ojala. “You’re not walled up anywhere in the house.” For instance, one of the living room’s marble walls reaches outside and serves as a barrier from the busy street.

Designers Eric Mandil and Sean Hughes gave the living room fireplace, built by McKee Woodcraft, a distinctive look with a brown cashmere-lacquer finish and satin-etched back-painted glass by Denver Glass Interiors. “It extends the footprint of the house,” the wife says. “In the summer, we open the doors and let the spaces flow.” In the wall, an integrated fountain spills water into a swimming pool, muffling the sound of city traffic and offering a beautiful focal point for an alfresco seating area. Given the indoor-outdoor nature of the house, the material palette follows suit. “There needed to be a continuity between the inside and outside,” says Mandil, who worked with Hughes on the fixed surfaces, materials and colors. “The architecture is pretty hard-edged, and we wanted to keep the decor warm and comfortable.” Starting outside, the designers surrounded the property with a custom louvered steel fence illuminated by uplights in the ground. “At night, it’s a whole different stage set,” Mandil says. “There is a lot of indirect and ambient light, so the project has a theatrical aspect.” The dramatic feeling continues in the entry, where the designers suspended

Bocci glass orb pendants that appear to drip into the space. Another sculptural fixture they selected, with tiny bulbs resembling fireflies, takes center stage in the dining room and plays off the tile flooring that complements the stone walls. “The marble walls make it feel ancient and contemporary at the same time, and we wanted to keep that quiet monumentality,” says Mandil, who is also an architect. “It’s serene but not cold.” The duo kept up that equilibrium in the living room, where they gave the fireplace surround a brown cashmere-lacquer finish to balance a white glass-and-Caesarstone bar on the opposite side of the room. White leather-upholstered sofas selected by the wife—who chose the home’s furniture, mostly from Studio 2b—round out the space. “I picked them for their modern look as well as their versatility for entertaining,” she says. bluestone Mandil likens to corduroy. “Even though the design is sleek,” Hughes says, “there are many warm elements that balance out the contemporary language.” The architecture’s linear forms are also tempered outside with native grasses, upright junipers and colorful wildflowers. “It’s a modern home, but the landscape is a blend of a modern look and a natural Colorado style,” says landscape designer Troy Shimp, who also poured the concrete patio surrounding the pool. “We wanted to design something with a lot of ‘wow’ in a relatively limited space.” Offering drama and privacy, modern steel planters and ornamental trees punctuate the area. The final design belies the meticulous building steps taken by Aaron Ojala, who is Brian Ojala’s brother and partner in the firm. Constructing the house on the tight lot

LX_CO51_HOM_Mandil_14.indd 277

required extra precautions, such as drilling concrete piers every 2 feet around the perimeter so the foundation would not cave in. During the framing process, the architect and builder continued to fine-tune elements, such as exact window placements, to ensure the best possible outcome. “When you do a custom home, there are details that need to be worked out in the field,” the builder says. “We kept adjusting things until it was perfect.” That attention to detail and the creative spirit exhibited by the whole team resulted in a residence that not only makes the most of its challenging site but also fulfills the homeowners’ expectations. “We took a small lot and built a house that feels larger visually,” the wife says. “We met our goal of entertaining, relaxing and enjoying the convenience of urban living.”

Right: Architect John Woodward Mink devised a Denver home with a New England-style farmhouse feel, which designer Sue Burgess appointed with contemporary furnishings and the owner’s antiques. A rug and a circular table, both antiques, gather in the entry, where sconces by Formations flank the entrance to the living room. Opposite, top: A painting by Franz Kline hangs above the limestone fireplace in the living room, where Burgess placed a sofa by Caperton Collection from Holly Hunt in Washington, D.C. The coffee table is by Dessin Fournir, and the pendant is by Formations. Opposite, bottom: The homeowner’s art collection is displayed throughout the home. In the entry hall, a painting by Joan Miró hangs above an antique William and Mary burl-wood chest. The sculpture is by Pablo Picasso.

hen architect John Woodward Mink’s client decided to move from the Washington, D.C., area to Denver, she wanted to bring a little bit of an East Coast feel with her. “She loved her house there and wanted something similar,” he says. “She also wanted something that had a great connection to the outdoors.” The client, a single woman with grown children, had lived in the District of Columbia vicinity for many years and was eager for a change. “I’d regularly spend time at our vacation home in the Colorado mountains, and I just decided this is where I want to be now,” she says. “I was ready for a simpler lifestyle and for a house that was easier to maintain.” Once her mind was set on Colorado, she sold her mountain property and began the process of building anew in the Mile High City. Though the homeowner knew her designer would be Sue Burgess—who is based in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and had worked with her previously—the right architect required a search. “I interviewed different people and chose John because he really listened and understood what I wanted,” she says. “He knows Colorado well and has done some great work here.”

An iron-and-glass pendant by Formations is suspended near a massive antique wood hutch that holds pottery pieces from the resident’s collection. The stone tile of the floor lends an organic quality to the space.

The client’s new Denver lot offered “towering ponderosa pines and beautiful rose gardens,” Mink says—along with a 1950s ranch-style home he had to raze. “I generally don’t like to tear down existing architecture, but there wasn’t a way to make that house work for my client,” he explains. For the clean slate, the architect, who aims to achieve a “casual elegance” in his designs, created a contemporary version of a New England-style farmhouse. The three-level home, which includes a basement, is clad with stucco and sandstone— a nod to the Colorado locale. Mink also sheathed a series of rooflines that pitch at 45-degree angles with premium-grade cedar shingles. “I created an articulated floor plan that brings down the scale so the house doesn’t look like one

LX_CO51_HOM_Mink_14.indd 289

big box,” he says. “There are deep overhangs as well as large Douglas-fir columns and beams that give a sense of solidity and permanence.” Inside, white-oak floors and walls made with the same sandstone used on the exterior bring some of those outside materials in. “The sandstone is from Telluride Stone Company, and it was installed with a full bed mortar application,” says the project’s builder, Chris Withers. In configuring the layout, Mink placed the master suite on the lower level, with the main living spaces. “The homeowner wanted to be able to live primarily on the first floor and have guest suites on the upper level for her children when they come to visit,” he says. Burgess then appointed the spaces with a curated mix of contemporary items and the

In the upstairs family room, Burgess created a feeling of calm by covering a sofa, armchairs and ottomans by R. Jones & Associates with a pale blue woven cotton by Calvin Fabrics. The sea-grass carpet is by Stark, and the custom coffee table is by David Iatesta.

client’s antiques while employing textured fabrics within a subtle palette to play off the structure’s tactile backdrop. “The client was very interested in simple but sophisticated elements,” she says. “There are linen blends in many of the rooms and plenty of wool rugs, too.” Linen dresses the chairs in the formal dining room, for example, and a blend of the material was used for the room’s draperies. Just off the dining room, a large Joan Mitchell painting hangs in the entry. “The client’s art collection is magnificent, and we wanted the interiors to complement it,” Burgess says. In this area, she paired an antique table from the owner’s collection with Dennis & Leen upholstered benches and sconces by Formations. “She has collected many wonderful antiques,” Burgess says. “We brought them here and reworked them for this house.” The designer opted for a similar mix in the adjacent living room, where a work by Franz Kline hangs prominently above the fireplace. Here, she suspended a Formations pendant over a Dessin Fournir coffee table encircled by a Caperton Collection sofa and two of the client’s antique armchairs. At the end of the entry hall, the great room—which holds the kitchen, breakfast and sitting areas—features

expansive windows and French doors that open to a large covered terrace with a fireplace. “If the sun is shining, she can open the doors and move between the inside and the outside during all 12 months of the year,” Mink says. That indoor-outdoor connection, as well as the house’s materiality, inspired the design for the grounds. “The client pointed me in the direction of something relaxed and almost cottage-like in feeling,” says landscape designer Troy Shimp, who picked up the same sandstone used for the house to create pathways on the property. “I planted a boxwood hedge that frames hydrangeas near the entrance to provide some structure and then added mixtures of flowering trees and shrubs such as dwarf crabapples, serviceberry, pear and Daphne.” Inside and outside, the house was designed to recall the resident’s former and beloved home on the East Coast while also embracing the beauty of its Denver locale. “Some houses are giant and just there to impress,” Mink says. “This client wanted the opposite of that. She wanted something understated, approachable and typical of Colorado.”

On the rear façade, Mink designed an expansive outdoor covered terrace. The building, constructed by Chris Withers with a home automation system by Residential Systems, features steeply pitched cedar-shingle roofs installed by Wilson Brothers; the windows are by Loewen. Landscape designer Troy Shimp gave the area a verdant lawn and an informal stone pathway.
