With its headquarters and 125,000-square-foot distribution center in New Jersey, an extensive slab gallery and stone shop, eight showrooms and over 200 dealers nationwide, Artistic Tile is living the American design dream. Answering the American call for top quality, customization and the ability to choose materials firsthand, Artistic Tile delivers on these and more with a full-service, one-stopshop experience. “Our production capabilities allow customers complete freedom to design their dream space in a myriad of colors, shapes and patterns,” CEO and founder Nancy Epstein says. “And they will have the highest-quality materials that will fit perfectly in their homes. Clients can select materials in person or watch them being made at our Secaucus facility.”
“Stone is a product of permanence; something that is natural, elegant, lasts forever and cannot be imitated.”
SETTING THE BAR Since 1987, Artistic Tile has served the most discerning consumers of luxury tile and stone products under the guidance of Epstein, who continues to lead the company into the future, along with her sons Michael and Zachary Epstein, and cousins Lauren Cherkas and Joshua Levinson. Today, through its headquarters and its showrooms in New York, New Jersey, San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas, Artistic Tile leads the market, producing designs that define the direction of the tile industry. Exquisite attention to detail ensures a final product that sets the bar for the luxury tile segment. “We are known for our innovative, award-winning designs in stone, glass and other mixed materials,” Epstein says. “We also source the highest-quality materials from all over the world and stock many beautiful natural products.” 1
THE LOCAL DIFFERENCE Artistic Tile uses its New Jersey manufacturing facilities to prototype and test out new ideas, patterns and colors. “We can walk into the production area and use what they are currently making to inform our latest ideas,” Epstein says. “It is a great symbiotic relationship having a variety of machines right next to our design department.”

t was the end of New York Fashion Week and the kick-off to the design season when I found myself in the spirited world of designer Johnson Hartig of fashion brand Libertine. We were jammed into BGs, celebrating the launch of his new textile collection for Schumacher, and I got to chatting with Johnson about our shared belief in the importance of beauty; how deeply it can move you and its power as a means of emotional connection. Walking back to my hotel later, I thought about what had first sparked my own appreciation for beauty. Coincidentally, it involved Schumacher and a room in my grandmother’s home. She referred to it as the “black-and-white room,” her guest room where I stayed on my many visits. The ceiling and walls were covered in Shengyou Toile and all of the bed linens were made from the same fabric. A large white basin set upon a chic French antique table held her artistic interior garden, overflowing with lush green plantings. The table was nested into a large bay window that overlooked one of her several outdoor gardens, dotted with color in the spring and summer. That room was magical to me; it was beauty and warmth and love. This season, I encourage you to seek out beauty and hold a memory of it close to you. As Johnson reminded me...it soothes the soul.

rivolity, joie de vivre and kaleidoscopic colors are synonymous with the Christian Lacroix aesthetic. The same could be said of the brand’s creative director, Sacha Walckhoff, who stepped into the role in 2010 after Lacroix left the House. Over the last decade, Walckhoff has transformed the company from a fashion powerhouse to a leader in the lifestyle and home decor space. “We are one of the only fashion brands who truly succeeded in going into home decor since Versace and Ralph Lauren,” says the creative director. In his latest furnishings collection with Roche Bobois, Walckhoff has stayed true to the brand’s
theatrical roots, dreaming up a fantastical fairy tale world featuring prints of enchanted forests and exotic creatures living in harmony. “The House of Christian Lacroix is as much about contrast as it is about adding surprise and wonder to the narration in any collection,” says Walckhoff. Each piece in the Bois Paradis collection delights with contrasting textures, evocative shapes and geometric patterns, while paying homage to Christian Lacroix’s beginnings. “This collection is a return to the origins of the House and its founding principle: combining the raw with the sophisticated to create an unrivaled aesthetic style,” says Walckhoff. This is exemplified in furnishings like the sumptuous sofa, which features the botanical Cueillette print in a rich velvet. Other items, like the large sixpaneled screen in natural oak with glossy lacquer, serve as an ideal backdrop for the Bois Paradis motif: a silhouetted storybook scene of soaring birds, swinging apes, and lush flora and fauna. Similar dreamscapes appear in Christian Lacroix’s other home collaborations too, all helmed by Walckhoff, such as a fabric and wallpaper line with Designers Guild and, recently, a porcelain tableware
Sacha Walckhoff’s latest designs for Christian Lacroix Maison include the Bois Paradis Bleu Nigelle wallcovering for Designers Guild (shown on previous page), a porcelain tableware collection with Vista Alegre (top, right), and a furnishings line with Roche Bobois (left).
collection with Vista Alegre. Herbariae, inspired by five flowers—the poppy, narcissus, lotus, dahlia and thistle—and designed around two color themes—a graphic black-and-white palette, and a watercolor style that combines soft pinks and yellows with celadon green and peacock blue—brings a neoclassical freshness to the table. “Mixing geometric patterns and floral ones makes each of them much more interesting,” says Walckhoff. “It allows the eye to go from one point to the other when looking at the decor of the room. As Diana Vreeland said, ‘The eye has to travel.’ ” Enhancing the natural environment has been a trademark of the Christian Lacroix brand, and one that Walckhoff embraces. Iconic moments include the Butterfly Parade design created in 2012 that so embodied the frivolities and joie de vivre of Christian Lacroix that it was mistaken for an archival print. “The lesson was that if a design is close enough to the idea people have about the brand, then the design is Lacroix!” remarks Walckhoff. As a multifaceted company, Walckhoff welcomes, and uses to his advantage, a broader vision. “We are not stopped by ideas that an interior brand would not do or have. To be un-experimented, unexpected sometimes helps,” he says. Aspirations include designing a hotel or a restaurant, and with Walckhoff ’s provocative spirit, one can only imagine the mythical fairy-tale world he might dream up. “When your imagination is always on fire, you just have to move forward,” he says. “It is exciting but exhausting sometimes! It keeps me alive.”

TRAITS SCHUMACHER TAKES A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WITH JOHNSON HARTIG’S FASHION HOUSE, LIBERTINE. WRITTEN BY SHANNON SHARPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL COSTELLO
Johnson Hartig, founder of the fashion label Libertine, believes clothing should showcase one’s personality and that the same goes for interior design. “The psychology of interiors fascinates me,” he observes. Hartig brings that passion to his new line with Schumacher—a 40-piece collection of wallpaper, fabric and trim showcasing a mix of bold colors and patterns, but with classical influences. “The collection encapsulates him perfectly,” remarks Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “If you were to use it all together, it makes quite the statement. But if you were to pick out separate pieces, they still translate individually.” Caponigro is a longtime fan of Hartig and she saw him as the perfect collaborator with Schumacher. The brand has a history of working with fashion designers, beginning with Paul Poiret in 1930 and later Elsa Schiaparelli and Karl Lagerfeld under the Waverly brand. The Libertine collection is an example of what Caponigro calls the “yin and yang” of the company. “We have beautiful classics,” she says. “But we’re always pushing forward in terms of fashion and fun.” Bringing his own personality to every detail, many of the pieces, like the Punk Rock Mix Tape trim, were inspired by Hartig’s childhood or his everyday life. “Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, I’ve always been inspired by punk culture,” he says. And the hand-drawn artwork of the Magical Ming Dragon fabric and wallcovering was influenced by Hartig’s own prized Tibetan rug. While his newest designs embody a sharp boldness, they maintain an underlying classic style. For example, the Modern Toile fabric and wallcovering features a contemporary twist on the traditional design using large-scale patterns, and the Java Seas fabric finds its inspiration in Indian batiks from the 16th and 17th centuries. “I can’t wait to see how people use them—even if they use a couple pillows or pieces throughout a room,” Hartig says. “It will be reflective of their personalities, as they are of mine.”
Johnson Hartig photographed in his Los Angeles home with his dog, Terrance. “The way Johnson understands home is the way he understands fashion,” says Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. “He has an innate style, innate creativity.”

As such, the floor coverings in RH’s latest Ultra Luxe collection set the bar high with rich textiles such as handspun silk, Mongolian cashmere, Peruvian Alpaca and pure New Zealand wool. Italian JOB
DESIGNER CRISTINA CELESTINO EMBRACES AN ICONIC FENDI PATTERN IN HER LATEST LAUNCH WITH THE ESTEEMED FASHION HOUSE. WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY OMAR SARTOR
Formally trained as an architect, Cristina Celestino’s design direction combines traditional elements connoting heritage with a contemporary aesthetic. As a fellow Italian interior and product designer with a passion for legacy, it was quite fitting that Fendi Casa tapped Celestino for its latest groundbreaking collection, Back Home. Here, Luxe gets the scoop on the inspiration behind the collaboration with the renowned fashion label. You first worked with Fendi designing one-ofa-kind furniture for the Design Miami booth in 2016. What came next? I worked with Fendi on the Omotesando store in Tokyo, where the Design Miami concept was adapted to a pop-up using everything from the furniture to wallcoverings. Some of those pieces—mostly low tables and sofas—were then chosen and produced exclusively for several Fendi boutiques worldwide. Silvia Venturini Fendi trusted in my
vision and thought that my collection represented the Fendi world, but also had strong potential commercially. After suggesting my work to Raffaella Vignatelli, the president of Fendi Casa, this collection, Back Home, was born.
company and an Italian family heritage brand run by women, both Fendi and Fendi Casa, who offered me complete freedom in the design process. We shared a common vision, so it was a very easy collaboration from start to finish.
And the influence? Silvia Venturini Fendi asked me to create a collection of furniture inspired by the Pequin—Fendi’s signature broad stripe pattern—created back in 1987, the same year Fendi Casa launched. As for the inspiration, the overall mood is from the ’70s—and, in particular, the interiors and furniture of Willy Rizzo, a decorator and photographer who worked in Rome in the mid-60s. He mixed refined luxury with a modern vision in a bold and distinct way using very rich material combinations and finishes.
Any favorites? That would be like asking a parent to name a favorite child—it’s impossible! I love different elements in each of the pieces, and I love that they work alone as either statement and iconic pieces, or equally well together.
This is a large collection—14 products! What was it like to work with the Fendi Casa team? It was an honor to collaborate with such an iconic
What were your aspirations for this collection? My hope, as it is with all of my designs, is to create pieces that express a message and a story beyond the aesthetic value. One that people remember. Fendi Casa’s quality is impeccable, so if people choose to pass this furniture down, they can certainly do so, but I never design with those preconceptions. I simply follow my heart and my imagination.

THE ARMSTONG HOTEL Guest rooms at downtown Fort Collins’ Armstrong Hotel are a little bohemian, a little modern and, despite a recent renovation, still clearly part of a 1923 landmark building. Mid-mod furnishings mingle with vintage textiles, macramé weavings pop against deep gray accent walls and jewel-toned Oriental rugs top the original hardwood floors. Downstairs in the lobby, Boulder-based Shalls Design Studio chose accents of patinated leather, metal and wood to complement antique tin ceilings, terrazzo floors and a cast-iron fireplace. thearmstronghotel.com

THE WYMAN HOTEL When Haley Morgan and Shane Fuhrman left the Big Apple to transform Silverton’s 1902 Wyman Building into a boutique hotel, they brought a bit of the city with them. Guests can sip pour-over coffees at the lobby’s locally made black walnut bar and power up their Teslas at on-site charging stations. In über-Instagrammable guest rooms, blush-pink draperies and deep green velvet headboards pop against white walls. “CLAUDE MONET: THE TRUTH OF NATURE”
This fall, the Denver Art Museum elevates the Mile High City’s place on the global arts scene with the debut of the most comprehensive U.S. exhibition of paintings by Claude Monet in more than two decades. Featuring approximately 120 artworks spanning the French impressionist’s career, “Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature” explores his responses to the natural settings he encountered during his extensive travels. Highlights of the monumental exhibition include View from Rouelles, the first painting Monet exhibited in 1858 when he was 18 years old, and The House Seen Through the Roses, which was completed in Giverny shortly before Monet’s death; it also shines a light on the artist’s shift to painting the same subject—haystacks, poplars, water lilies—in a series. Denver is the sole U.S. city for this show; after closing on February 2, it will travel to the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany. denverartmuseum.org

WHO: Denver native Bret Sundberg, a fashion model whose forays into fashion styling, set design for commercials and music videos, and staging led her to a blossoming career in interior design.
OPEN HOUSE WORTHING CO.
When it comes to decorating styles, sisters Abigail Vickers Cowan, Emily Vickers Kowal and Devon Vickers Davenport, cofounders of Denver home goods shop Worthing Co., are as different as can be, but each seems to have acquired the gene for skillfully mixing old and new. “We inherited our love of finding unique furniture from our grandmother, who took the time to teach my mom, who in turn taught us,” Cowan says. “All three of us think outside the box: Just because a door is a door doesn’t mean you can’t use it as a shelf or a headboard.” That ethos is evident in the trio’s new Highlands Square house-turned-shop, where stylish accessories—from Pickwick & Co. candles to vinyl floor cloths in eye-catching vintage patterns—complement one-of-a-kind industrial- and farmhouse-style furnishings and accents. “When we select furniture for the shop, we look for character; something that looks like it has lived a long life,” Cowan says. “We definitely see the beauty in the proof of history.” worthingco.com
WHAT: Her Instagram is filled with rooms furnished with plush seating, lots of trinkets, lush plants, warm tones and an overarching sense of airiness. “I’m adamant about using antiques and vintage goods to bring character to spaces,” Sundberg says. Also, expect to see the gorgeous shoppable spaces Sundberg designs for Guest House, the Denver company that turns for-sale homes into stylish pop-up shops. WHY: You’ll be inspired by “a whole lotta pretty houses,” as Sundberg puts it, discover talented local artists and makers, and styling tips and tidbits. IN HER WORDS: “One thing that’s so important to me is styling based on how it makes me or the client feel rather than always picking the best looking option. I think the idea of creating a home sometimes gets lost in the idea of creating a space for Instagram. The only statement worth trying to make with my designs is that there is no ‘right’ way.”
CHECK IN Aspen has been buzzing about the W Aspen hotel and the Sky Residences at W Aspen since the project was announced in 2016. This August, it made its debut, bringing 88 rustic-glam guest rooms and suites and 11 residences to the base of Aspen Mountain. Marriott International partnered with Aspen architecture firm Rowland+Broughton and New York-based interior design firm Nemaworkshop to create a design inspired by generations of Aspen inhabitants and visitors. At cocktail bar 39°, a Victorian-bordello-inspired palette of crushed velvets and rich red hues nods to the hotel’s location in Aspen’s former redlight district. In the Extreme WOW suite, bohemian decadence is the theme, with a curvilinear banquette that hugs a central fire pit; a hot tub adjacent to the living area; and a round bed on a pivoting platform. And on the outdoor Wet Deck, cozy fire pits draw guests to the hotel’s après-ski rituals—and the only public rooftop pool in town. waspenskyresidences.com 100 / LUXESOURCE.COM

DATE BOOK EMILY TUCKER BERNSTEIN
Many designers cite fine works of art or far-flung destinations as inspirations. Emily Tucker Bernstein, however, is energized by color—the deft handling of which she learned while working with design icons Ruthie Sommers, Kelly Wearstler and Steven Gambrel. “Color—and the way people see it, and how it makes them feel—is such an intrinsic part of being human,” Bernstein says. “Most people experience the same emotions when seeing certain colors, so I take it seriously. It is such a powerful tool and can drastically change a space.” Case in point: the Colorado homes the Southern California native has designed since settling in Boulder, where she helms her eponymous firm. Eye-catching color—some bold, some subtle—is evident in every space, along with a relaxed elegance that feels perfectly at home at the foot of the Rockies. Here, Bernstein offers more insights into her style by taking Luxe on a tour of the Boulder spots that catch her eye— and imagination. etuckerdesign.com 9 a.m. First stop: Beleza Coffee Bar, which I love because the decor is so good—it’s a bohemian-feeling space that’s lively and inviting. The smoked-salmon toast, with wild Alaskan salmon, cream cheese and homemade pickled onions, is my fave. 10 a.m. While you’re near the north end of town, head farther up Broadway to The Amazing Garage Sale, a consignment shop that has an eclectic mix of vintage furniture, not to mention some pretty fab jewelry. I have found some great home accessories there, from cool vintage art to decorative items. 12 p.m. During the winter months, my favorite lunch spot in Boulder is Chimera, a restaurant just off Pearl Street that specializes in Pacific Rim cuisine. They have great ramen with homemade organic noodles—I get the classic Chimera ramen with an egg. 1 p.m. Just across 10th Street is Cedar & Hyde Mercantile (top, right), a beautiful shop that I love visiting for home goods, clothing, accessories and gifts. They have amazing ceramics (I do ceramics as a hobby, so I am always looking for beautiful pottery) and lovely, elevated 102 / LUXESOURCE.COM
home basics. Case in point: I purchased a fly-swatter there that’s really pretty! 2 p.m. If you feel like treating yourself, grab a facial at Alchemy Face Bar (center). The decor is feminine, bright and cozy, with lots of rose gold and white accents, and they use allnatural products for their facials. If I don’t have a ton of time, I do the basic facial and add microdermabrasion. When I have the time, I opt for the Radiant + Resurfacing facial. It’s a miracle for congested skin. 3 p.m. Part art exhibition, part Instagram photo-op, Wonder Wonder on 29th Street is a fun stop. You’ll make your way through 18 rooms, each one featuring a different art installation or light display that makes for a great photo backdrop. Tickets are required, so plan ahead to ensure you get the time you want. 5 p.m. Afternoon cocktails are a must, and Corrida (bottom) can’t be beat for its rooftop— with amazing views of the Flatirons—or its gin and tonics, which are so delicious. If you’re staying for dinner, go with a few people, as Corrida’s delicious steaks are really large and best shared with a group.

MINOTTI Daniels seating system redesigns living areas with new compositions, in which regular curves and ellipses interrupt the linearity of the layouts. When paired with the Amber low units, it creates a strong visual impact that passes seamlessly from the soft feel of the seats to the harder feel of the containers; and from more geometric shapes to an extraordinary combination of curves. minotti.com

While already established in the fashion world before arriving at the House of Chanel in 1983, it was Karl Lagerfeld’s 30-plus-year tenure at the helm of the French label that solidified his place in fashion history. The “more-is-more” attitude of the ’80s saw women dressing in bold patterns and figure-defining silhouettes, an attitude that’s seeing a resurgence today, where flaunting one’s personal style is celebrated more than ever.

CLEAN LINES CALVIN KLEIN, NEW YORK 1994

Minimalist dressers can thank Calvin Klein for the ultimate referendum in restraint, and for giving us Kate Moss, too. Looking to neutral tones, genderbending shapes and simple silhouettes that defined his early 1990s collections (and influenced the overall sleek approach to female urban dressing of that era), the brand’s ethos of simplicity is just as applicable in one’s wardrobe as it is in the home.

SEASON for ENTERTAINING IN A CHARMING CHICAGO KITCHEN DESIGNED BY REBEKAH ZAVELOFF, A FESTIVE AMBIENCE SETS THE SCENE. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DUSTIN HALLECK
172 / LUXESOURCE.COM
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
Today, the kitchen is the main hub of the house, so set the scene with an oversize vase brimming with greenery. For this space, Devin Kirk, vice president of merchandising for Jayson Home, chose olive tree branches, which can last for weeks. Previous page: A gorgeous floral arrangement is a must when entertaining in your dining room. “It anchors the space, sets the tone and can be a great conversation starter, says Kirk, who styled the display with anemones, sedum, dahlias and magnolia branches in a generous white vase.
174 / LUXESOURCE.COM
For a row house renovation in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park, Rebekah Zaveloff’s clients requested one element straightaway: a woodburning fireplace in the kitchen. The family has a summer home in Vermont with an outdoor pizza oven and wanted to bring a similar vibe to this residence. Thankfully, Zaveloff, the designer and cofounder of KitchenLab Interiors, was completely on board. “It’s all about creating spaces that feel a certain way, evoke emotion or a sense of nostalgia,” Zaveloff explains. In this case, the homeowners desired a kitchen that would recall vacation all year long. kitchenlabinteriors.com The fireplace is such a defining feature. How did you decide on its placement within the kitchen? I know from working in old homes that adding fireplaces can be a very challenging undertaking. There is a lot to consider, including chimney size, structural issues, converting gas lines, ventilation and so on. Originally, we had designed the fireplace to go on the back wall between the windows but when we demolished the space, we found an old chimney in the corner and the location really ended up being a happy accident.
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
Tell us about your approach to pattern. The patterned concrete floor tiles make the space here! In so many kitchens we incorporate wood floors, as people are nervous to commit to pattern, but the wood on wood can start to blend; it can be challenging to create contrast. Here, the tile adds a dose of drama but isn’t overwhelming. I did several versions of the design until we came up with something everyone loved with just the right balance of black and white. 176 / LUXESOURCE.COM
How is the dining room used? This space certainly changed once we opened it up to the kitchen. Before, the two rooms were separated by a large volume that housed a pantry and powder room; it felt choppy. Now, everything flows together nicely. So I decided to do away with dedicated dining, living and hall areas and instead put seating everywhere. I believe if you make spaces welcoming, people will use them!
Extra seating areas are always smart, and this cozy space in front of the fireplace houses Jayson Home’s Melrose Chair in spice velvet with a Siren Song pillow. Custom Villa Lagoon Tile, selected by designer Rebekah Zaveloff, decorates the floor.
THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH
Think outside the box when it comes to the mantel. Fig branches provide an interesting pop of green while a marbleized teapot adds unexpected charm and a pretty silhouette. Few things are more important than good lighting and a scattering of candlesticks ensures the festivities will continue by candlelight, says Kirk.

A good tray is the unsung hero of the bar: It instantly corrals bottles and glassware making the space look more put together. Over the next few pages, designers and creatives weigh in on the conversation, encouraging us to pair heirloom dishware with bold linens and wild vines, to outfit guest rooms with raucous minibars, and by all means, to mingle beyond the bounds of the living and dining areas, as evidenced by this sumptuous yet laid-back music room by interior designer Heather Hilliard. Mind you, this “new” approach to fine entertaining isn’t so much new as a swinging of the pendulum: “Mrs. Astor was known for her infamous Midnight Suppers,” recalls event designer Rebecca Gardner. “These were intimate after-parties where she served ridiculously casual food like spaghetti and meatballs on her finest china. The beginning of high-low!” Take a page from the infamous socialite’s book, and toast to the season.

HISTORY REPEATS In Victorian-era England, drawing rooms were a prerequisite for any fine home, providing an elegant hub to “withdraw” for post-dinner merriment. Fast-forward a century and change, and the room’s intentionality is enjoying a renaissance, thanks to reinvigorated demand for defined entertaining spaces. Here, Steven Harris Architects and Rees Roberts + Partners adapted the concept on the parlor floor of a historic 1856 Chelsea townhouse, deftly eschewing any stuffy connotations in the process. “We reinterpreted the home’s original Italianate revival moldings into a more streamlined and proportionate version that still held the intended gravitas of the room,” explains Kevin Blusewicz, senior associate at Steven Harris Architects. Joined by convivial seating arrangements, a “discrete yet assertive” color scheme and impressively scaled new windows that bathe the room in sunlight, the grand bones appear to soften and relax. reesroberts.com

REBECCA GARDNER
Founder and Creative Director, Houses & Parties Reimagine the classics. I like to set the table with my best pieces, most of which belonged to my grandmother, but I avoid being stuffy. The key is to be a little irreverent with anything fancy. One way to do this is to layer patterns on top of each other, like a floral Meissen dinner plate on top of a chintz fabric. I prefer big, luscious flowers that are just about to fall apart and unruly vines that twist around place settings. You can also repurpose: consider fingers bowls for ice cream sundaes and nut dishes for colorful candies. If you make the table a little wild and naughty, guests will behave accordingly. rebecca-gardner.com

SOLO SHOW
From industry galas to society weddings, a distinct pattern in floral design has emerged: single-bloom arrangements. Lush and unfussy, this shift is actualized by Poshan, a new Manhattan-based floral atelier. With Art Deco-inspired linen packaging and a mission of celebrating the singular beauty of rare varieties, Poshan has become a fast favorite of the fashion crowd. Here, founder Wu York shares his approach. poshanflowers.com Inspiration behind Poshan: I couldn’t find floral arrangements that I loved, so I created them. I use single flowers in powerfully simple arrangements, without any “filler” or greens. I base the overall sculptural shape on what’s available at the market each morning. Clients are asking for: English roses! And seasonal flowers, like tree peonies and fresh French lavender. Floral wisdom to live by: Less is more. Focus on quality flowers displayed in special, handmade vessels. People appreciate these two elements now more than ever.

Of course, this means keeping things tasteful and proportionate, but larger design elements will act as conversation starters and add energy to your event. When a room fills with people, many traditional touches, like linens, florals and candlelight, are ultimately obscured by bodies. Size makes a statement and we talk often about “shoulders and above” at my company. You always want a larger visual element that will live above the crowd! rafanellievents.com

Boutique establishments brimming with personal touches and memorable amenities have fast become the new wave of luxury hotels. So, where could be a more prescient well to draw inspiration from for our own guest quarters this season? We turned to the riotously beautiful NOLA hot spot Maison de la Luz, designed by Atelier Ace and Studio Shamshiri, for a lesson in idiosyncratic design and Southern hospitality. maisondelaluz.com
⊳ DOWN TIME Thrice daily meals together can test even the dearest of friends and family, which makes the integration of a private guest nook for morning coffees or solo meals a bonus for all. Let Maison de la Luz’s intimate window adjacent seating areas, each equipped with loungefriendly seating and copper-topped “séance tables” etched in astrological motifs, remind that this setup can nest happily in guest accommodations of all shapes and sizes.
IN GOOD SPIRITS ⊲ Throughout the hotel’s 36 king rooms, a festive tone is set by the trading of nightstands for decadent bedside minibars. A selection of top-shelf libations— amongst them, Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whiskey and Ruinart Brut Rosé—sit atop a bespoke bar cabinet, which in turn encloses an artful collection of highball and champagne glasses. Brass ice buckets in the shape of a pineapple cheekily harken back to the hotel’s overarching design goal: moments of rebellion within the envelope of traditional hospitality.
▲ DETAIL ORIENTED When it came to conceptualizing the en suites, Studio Shamshiri principal designer Pamela Shamshiri “leaned into classic hotel iconography: waffle robes, incredible towels and all-stone bathrooms.” But luxuriant amenities extend beyond these focal details to smaller nuances of the bathroom design. Note, for example, the patinaed silver vanity set by Pigeon and Poodle and the merchandized curation of Grown Alchemist toiletries; chic and considered final flourishes for any guest setup.

To welcome the addition of company, a traditional desk chair was replaced with a custom settee, and the Zuber wallpaper-clad bar area holds a rainbow of vintage glassware (sourced at the Brimfield Antique Show) set atop highgloss, piano-finish built-ins concealing a petite wine refrigerator. xtraordinary settings sometimes require extraordinary restraint. Case in point: A contemporary home sited in the abundant natural beauty and sweeping views of Breckenridge. This dwelling lives up to the landscape not with extravagance, but with streamlined simplicity. Its occupants, a family drawn to the area by their love of nature and passion for outdoor activities, craved not just a vacation home for themselves, but a generous, open plan retreat that feels equally welcoming for close friends and extended family. And, although they wanted something appropriate to the location, they imagined a house that was slightly unexpected. After settling on a lakeside setting, the family reached out to designers Rachel Hoback and Michaela Rodgers and architect Tim Hagman. Their design directive: Create a mountain getaway challenging the traditional aesthetic of a
lake house, while remaining respectful to the site studded with towering pines. “We wanted to ensure that the house had a connection to its environment,” says Hagman. “This isn’t just a contemporary white box. It feels at home here.” Materials like rough-hewn timber, logs and stones were jettisoned in favor of concrete, smooth walnut wood and industrial steel beams, yet the team always deferred to what drew the family here to begin with— the allure of the raw terrain. Balancing the powerful framework, the home eschews extraneous details and color, opting instead for hushed palettes and simple silhouettes that minimize distractions from the highimpact surroundings. “This house is right on a lake and has amazing views of the mountains,” Rodgers says. “It was specifically designed around that scenery. We incorporated straightforward natural materials inside. Nothing too flashy or colorful was used.”
In the living room, an abstract family portrait is the focal point over the fireplace. The custom sectional upholstered in a neutral Perennials fabric creates a cozy seating area around the fire. An armchair covered in a charcoalhued Kneedler-Fauchère fabric and pillows in a range of blues offer hints of cool color to the quiet palette.
LUXESOURCE.COM / 207
The mood for the living room is comfortable and inviting, and its central location means the entire family often gathers in this space. The sectional, which sits on a rug from Floor Coverings by CPA, is positioned to enjoy the fireplace or the view.
In fact, it was discouraged. To put guests at ease, furnishings and fabrics are informal and inviting and are almost demure in nature. Graciously scaled sectionals upholstered in earthy, heavy-weave fabrics are quietly luxurious. Subtle accents of color—teal blues, reds and oranges—mirror the deepest hues of the nearby lake and the sunsets reflected on its still surface. However, eschewing any hint of flamboyance is not to say that the opportunity for the occasional visual punch was ignored. Bold elements serve as design exclamation points throughout the house, such as the large-scale, concrete-clad fireplace surrounds in the living room and downstairs family room that are bookended by walnut shelves, with the warm tones of the wood softening the concrete’s hard edges. It’s just one of the areas where opposites are used to heighten the design. “Contrast was very important here,” Hoback notes. “We incorporated a mix of materials—some warm, some cold, some heavy, some light. Contrast not only provides balance, but it creates focal points—and the mix of materials feels very natural here.”

In the kitchen, the juxtaposition of materials continues, with the local, natural beauty front and center in the form of warm woods and white-painted cabinets; concrete floors and Basaltina countertops. An undulating vein cut in the tile backsplash provides a hint of polished pattern. And, of course, an overscale island means both meal prep and meals become a family affair. Formal and informal also find equilibrium here. Just off the kitchen, a cozy family room provides a casual counterpoint to the living room’s more sedate lines. Streamlined silhouettes in the form of a well-used window seat and low-slung table and club chairs create a zone built to encourage game nights and storytelling. The view—possibly the best in the house—finds no distractions but is, instead, embraced by the autumnal palette and wealth of glowing wood that seems to almost to be lit from within. “The driving force behind the design was really this family’s desire for comfortable spaces
that still feel current,” Hoback says. “It’s welcoming and family friendly and is built to bring people together.” Private spaces, including two master suites, four bedrooms and a bunk room that sleeps 10, reinforce the inviting nature that sets the tone throughout the house. Design details— wood-panel walls, leather benches and cantilevered bedside tables—provide an uncluttered sophistication personalized with touches alluding to the gracious family that spends time here. Colorful blankets from their home in Mexico’s Oaxaca region inspire earthy palettes. Vintage skis, skates, snowshoes and ski maps reference a passion for this place and the outdoor activities that drew this family here in the first place. All signal a love affair with Colorado and a desire to share the traditions that make this a true home away from home. “The lifestyle in the mountains is relaxed and informal—never flashy,” Hagman says. “This house embraces that; it encourages downtime simply spent with family.”
Above: The family’s fitness studio is connected to the main house via a light-filled hall lined with windows. Opposite: The house is parallel to the shoreline to ensure that all spaces have a front-row seat to the lake. A dining table and chairs from Design Within Reach offer lakeside alfresco dining.

eek into the Denver-based studio of Annalee Schorr, and you’ll find more than standard paints and brushes. The artist enjoys extracting unexpected poetry from basic hardware store staples—think silvery aluminum sheets, mirrored Mylar, crystal-clear plexiglass and duct tape (which she collects in every color and pattern available). “I’m always looking for something that people don’t consider beautiful enough to make art,” confesses the artist. From these humble supplies, Schorr builds complex geometry with hard-edge lines and dramatic splashes of color. “I’m very interested in structure, and how things are put together,” she explains. “It’s a way of making order out of chaos.” The artist went beyond the canvas early on, starting with her kaleidoscopic-like plexiglass paintings. Though Schorr still makes works on more conventional surfaces like paper, plexiglass allows her to create many shapes to paint on, from razor-sharp parallelograms to staggered shards that wrap around corners. “I just happened to buy some plexiglass to use for framing,” recalls the artist about her first serendipitous experiments with the material. “It comes with a brown paper protective backing that you can peel off. So I started drawing on the paper and cutting out lines with an X-Acto knife.” She then builds her patterns color by color, peeling away segments of paper and filling each exposed section with acrylic paint. “The back of the painting ends up looking pretty sloppy,” says Schorr. “But the front is all precision.” Some portions of plexiglass remain untouched. These transparent moments contrast with her vivid palette, from graphic black and white to Technicolor hues. “I think about weaving the colors
together as I’m creating a piece,” says Schorr about this process. “Certain colors vibrate against each other, adding to the pattern’s optical illusion.” For her larger installations, Schorr discovered duct tape is the perfect medium to translate this optical energy into a 3D space. She has filled entire rooms with glossy stripes of tape in her popular shows at Spark Gallery (an artists’ cooperative she’s been a part of since 1985). The gallery will host the artist’s latest solo exhibition in January, where she continues her experiments transforming unusual objects into mind-bending visual feats. Over the decades, this search for beauty lurking among the mundane still drives her art practice, says Schorr. “I always want to get the viewer’s attention and make them see things in a different light.”
Schorr poses in her studio (this page), surrounded by her works on paper and acrylic and duct tape installations. A sliced image of John McCain (opposite, left) offers a new perspective on portraiture. The artist carefully cuts away sections of the protective coating on the back of a sheet of material (opposite, right). After exposing sections of the plexiglass, she fills them in with paint.

t’s not always the case that designers’ personal aesthetics and passions align precisely with those of their clients, but when Joe McGuire and Matthew Tenzin began interviewing a couple who were building a new home in Boulder, both parties quickly realized they were of one mind. “We wanted the rooms to be quite modern, and in describing what we liked, it became obvious that what we were talking about was a look that could be called ‘Milan Modern,’ ” says homeowner Terry Rodrigue, who, with his fiance Pamela Yugar, hired the designers to oversee the home’s interior design. “They’re big fans of Italy,” Tenzin says, noting the couple’s affinity for the country’s cycling terrain and regional varieties of wine and coffee. “Their love of Italy was a real fit with us because we go there a lot, and we collaborate with Italian furniture and lighting designers. We wanted to bring that international taste and cosmopolitan style to a Colorado home.” Architects Dale Hubbard and Chad Willis were designing the house in a new development at the base of Mount Sanitas. Known for their organic, modern approach, the architects created plans that gave McGuire and Tenzin the parameters they needed to wrap around their chic, minimalist design. They turned to Studio Como in Denver for clean-lined European furnishings, and worked directly with Milan artisans such as Alberto Biagetti, who created custom lighting for the dining room and stairwell. “We’d been going to Milan a lot—and it’s such an inspiration for us,” McGuire says. “Terry and Pamela weren’t previously immersed in the world of Italian design, but they were receptive.” The designers sent them to Studio Como initially to learn about different furniture lines and, while the couple was on vacation in Italy, they visited stylish Milan shops to continue their education. In the process, Terry and Pamela
“WHAT BRINGS ENERGY AND LIFE FORCE TO A SPACE ARE THINGS THAT ARE SACRED.” –MATTHEW TENZIN
were discovering new design sources and texting pictures back to McGuire and Tenzin. “We don’t always have this relationship where it’s a learning curve for both of us,” McGuire says. “But while they were on vacation, they made wonderful discoveries.” The architects also found ways to incorporate the Colorado landscape into the home’s palette and finishes— most significantly on the exterior, which is clad in stone and wood. “We worked with the client to create a home that blends with both the neighborhood and mountains,” Hubbard says. The house is shaped like an H, with parallel wings embracing outdoor seating areas in front and back. “It creates this alpine courtyard in the rear,” the architect adds, with the main level nestled at the base of terraced landscaping designed by landscape architect Matthew Underly. “The sunken area was created to establish a hardscape level that allows for an easier transition to the outdoor living space,” Underly says. Inside, McGuire and Tenzin looked toward the mountains for color cues. “We always like to get a sense of the natural context,” McGuire says, while Tenzin ticked off hues inspired by nearby grasses, sage and wildflowers. The designers also used Pamela’s favorite shades of red and raspberry— a theme she and Terry invoke every time they travel. “Whenever we go to Italy, we find something red to bring back,” Terry says. The designers used colors judiciously, however, against a largely quiet, neutral background. Tenzin, a former Buddhist monk, and McGuire, who once studied massage in Santa Fe, believe that interiors need to foremost offer sanctuary. “We see design as a healing art,” Tenzin says. Sleek, built-in cabinetry and storage systems by The Artisan Shop in Boulder ensure that all the couple’s nonessential belongings are put away, so their focus can remain on the objects they love. “What brings energy and life force to a space are things that are scared, personal and filled with positive intention,” Tenzin explains. That’s why the lower-level wine room pays homage to each individual bottle via suspension cables against glass walls; the kitchen has a niche carved out for a statement-making Breville espresso maker; and the garage includes a bump-out for Terry’s large collection of bikes and cycling equipment. The home’s second level includes a meditation room with an indoor water fountain for Pamela, who shares the designers’ desire for a space for quiet reflection. The couple’s two dogs get a special place as well with a window seat in the dining room sized so they can easily hop up and gaze outside. It’s those kinds of details, Tenzin says, that define real luxury: “All these little moments of daily life where you just feel tended to and cared for.”
The guest bedroom doubles as a meditation space, so creating a peaceful backdrop was paramount. Designers Joe McGuire and Matthew Tenzin outfitted the space with a Tibetan prayer bell and a plush Santa Monica lounge chair and ottoman by Poliform, purchased through Studio Como. A silver gelatin photograph by David Brookover hangs above. The side table is by West Elm and the rug is from Artisan Rug Gallery.

hen architect Christopher Brandon walked the land where his clients dreamed of building a ski home—situated in the Gore Range of the Rockies, with Vail Valley views—the spectacular topography inspired him as he began sketching. Brandon had known his clients, Paige and Michael Hill, for many years so he knew that they appreciated modern architecture and indoor-outdoor mountain living. Paige, who is the home’s designer as well as the owner, remembers, “Christopher told us ‘I have a sketch, and I’m calling it Levitating Cubes.’ ” The moniker could be offputting to some, but not to the designer. “He knows I’ll try anything different,” she laughs. The distinctive design is so named because it gently nestles cube-shaped forms into the hillside to capitalize on the views down into the Valley and up the mountains. The desire to host friends was at the heart of the project for Paige and Michael. “We have many people in our lives who want to ski Vail Mountain,” Michael says. Thus, programmatically, Brandon organized the home in a way to meet the needs of both owners and guests. For the couple, he created a top-floor private retreat that includes a master suite, which cantilevers out from the building, with glass walls on three sides that create a sense of expansiveness. A kitchenette, roof deck, hot tub and fire pit on the same level gives the owners privacy even when the house is full of guests.

The couple accommodated 14 friends for New Year’s Eve in their spacious kitchen. For dining, a custom sycamore-wood dining table by Tony Clark of Clark Functional Art was paired with chairs by Kenneth Cobonpue. The custom full-height lacquer cabinets in sapphire blue and the island with Krion matte-white counters are both by Porcelanosa. The barstools are by Calligaris.
The main floor—comprising a great room, a large fireplace, the main kitchen and a dining room—is ideal for entertaining. “It spills outside to a spa and the outdoor entertaining areas,” Brandon says. Paige adds, “Even when we have many houseguests, everybody can escape, and people aren’t on top of each other.” More guest suites are on the lower floor, along with areas for visitors to relax and play, including a game room. “We have a pool table, darts and Caribbean ring toss,” Michael says. For a touch of whimsy, the room looks out onto a vibrant graffiti mural. “We commissioned street artists Yok & Sheryo to spray-paint the retaining wall,” Paige explains. “I wanted a lot of color.” The vistas outside the windows display a different kind of artistry. “The ceilings are 11 and 12 feet high, so no matter where you are, you have nice sight lines to the topography,” says Michael. The architect used 3D architecture modeling software to virtually walk the house before it was built, making sure the vistas could be enjoyed from nearly every room. Landscape architect Ric Fields used plantings to extend the interior spaces to the outdoors. “The plant massing was intended to soften the corners of the building and also frame the view,” he says. “The plantings are mostly native to our area, like snowberry, aspen and spruce.” The owners love the home’s mix of materials which, in addition to glass, includes structural steel and concrete. But to Paige, achieving balance is key. “You need to offset the hard materials with wood—here, we used wood on the ceilings and some walls,” she says. Paige believes lighting

creates a similar effect. “Lighting is like jewelry for the house, and it warms it up,” she says. “If it’s discreet lighting, people don’t know why the space feels warm, just that it feels good.” Paige also spiced up the home’s natural palette with dashes of color. “Everyone thought I was nuts putting in bright blue kitchen cabinets, but it turned out great,” she says. “Some of the bedroom furniture is done in a fuchsia color, and one of the guest bedrooms has a green upholstered platform bed.” The home also showcases the Hills’ eclectic art collection. “Every year for our anniversary, we celebrate with a gift of paper, wood or whatever the year traditionally calls for,” Paige says. “It’s almost always sculpture from the designated material.” The couple also collects art by Adam Neate and Claudia Rodriguez, who created the determined rock climbers scaling a concrete wall adjacent to the home’s striking staircase.
But the homeowners appreciate the natural environment as much as the manmade. “Every day we are here we say, ‘This view is so amazing!’ ” Paige says. “In addition to the mountains, you see fox and deer.” Michael adds, “We are near Vail Village, one of the top ski destinations in the world, yet we have this private winter wonderland with no visible neighbors.” On one of their first nights in the home, they awoke in their glass-enclosed master suite surrounded by a fresh blanket of snow. “Paige sent me panorama shots from bed, and that was pretty cool,” Brandon says. “It was the vision we had talked about from day one. I imagine it’s their favorite part of the house, which makes it my favorite, too.” Paige agrees. “I could live in the master suite. During winter the snow glitters as the sun rises over the mountain, and during the summer animals come down from the forest to drink from the streams.”
