FURNITURE A Love Story

My first furniture crush was a Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Chan coffee table, which I spied in the home of my great uncle at the tender age of 9. I stood in awe, taking in its patinated bronze, pewter and enamel village scene and octagonal bronze base with blue-enamel inserts. That table certainly kicked off my deep affection for all things decorative... and quite possibly nudged me toward my future career. Philip and Kelvin were father-and-son creative collaborators who fashioned exceptional art pieces that were incorporated into furniture. Their dedication to craft and original design is something to be admired. This issue of Luxe is our love letter to furniture, and those tenants that we value most— craftsmanship, collaboration, originality and heritage. When you’re next out shopping for furnishings to add to your home, make it something special that’s created with great care and attention—a piece that may even impress a curious 9-year-old.

Where is that Chan table today? It sits handsomely in my father’s living room. I still have my eyes on it… this heritage piece of art that helped shape a life.

Golden TOUCH

Nearly two centuries into business, each Rinck design still begins with a hand drawing, as seen in the walnut and nickel armchair (shown), a star of the new contemporary collection. “At a time of disposable consuming, we need to go back to made-to-last products with meaning,” says Vice President Valentin Goux.

WITH ITS NEW CONTEMPORARY COLLECTION, RINCK CELEBRATES A SINGULAR LEGACY OF HANDICRAFT.

Amidst the bustle of Paris’s 12th arrondissement sits an iconic atelier and within it, a trove of hand drawings dating back 180 years. Spanning styles from Napoleon III to Art Nouveau and Louis XV, Rinck’s design archive is an unwitting history of French furniture. In the age of iCloud storage and CAD renderings, the monumental collection presents an anomaly, but then, so does the company it chronicles. A true ensemblier décorateur, Rinck is the only French furniture and fabrication company still designing and manufacturing in-house today. Its eponymous watercolors and coated paper sketches are the first indication of an emphasis on touch-of-hand that guides each creation from seed idea through finished product—an ethos echoed in its outposts and reverberated by leadership. Notes Valentin Goux, the second-generation vice president of the family-run firm, “We believe our designers need to be able to draw to understand proportion and scale, and that’s not about to change. Artistic drawings are still of utmost importance.” With three ateliers—one in Ardennes dedicated to cabinetmaking and one in Drôme for boiserie and millwork, in addition to the Paris design headquarters—Rinck’s specialties run the gamut from marquetry, veneers and gilding, to latticework, ornamental carving and trompe l’oeil. Employed throughout the workshops is a network of master craftspeople, some disciples of classic cabinetmaking schools and others from Les Compagnons, the Medieval-rooted, UNESCOprotected group of artisans who train in the field in towns across France. With design and build talents under the same roof, each piece becomes a dynamic meeting of the minds. “Once we get to prototyping, the designers work with the craftsmen weekly to refine the designs and make them perfect,” shares Goux. While Rinck’s intimate, tactile approach stands as testament to handcrafted tradition, the company is ever looking forward in both execution and creative vision, evidenced by its sleek new contemporary collection—the first modern ensemble in 50 years. Spurred by an off-the-cuff conversation over a team lunch, a beloved 1930s sycamore table was unearthed from the archives, in turn inspiring a full dining room suite of table, armchairs, side chairs, console and sconces. Edging on modernist in gleaming French walnut and black nickel, a dash of Rinck’s token classicism is still evident in the foliateembossed velvet upholstery. “It’s very 19th century, but in a fresh way,” notes Goux. “These are the kind of pieces you keep for generations.”

It Takes TWO ARTIST SUSAN HABLE REFLECTS ON HER LONGTIME PARTNERSHIP WITH HICKORY CHAIR. AS TOLD TO MICHELLE BRUNNER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATRICK HEAGNEY

Ten years ago, our family pulled up stakes, left New York City, and settled in Athens, Georgia. At the time, the economy was in peril, and we wondered: How are we going to refocus our textile brand, Hable Construction, and deal with the changes? Simultaneously, Hickory Chair was looking for new ways to innovate. The timing was right, so we came onboard to create its first designer fabric collection. We had been making textiles for a few years, but to grow as a company, we knew we had to expand—and I thought we should try creating a furniture collection. My sister and business partner, Katharine, and I love to see the inner workings of things. That curiosity is at the core of everything we’ve done. I knew furniture would be no different.

I always think of the saying, “ask for what you need,” which is such a good reminder in life. Positive things have come out of transition periods for us. Hickory Chair was nearing its 100th anniversary in business, and wanted to keep pushing forward. (I think that’s the key to its success.) In 2015, we launched our first furniture collection, and with it, I tried to create foundation pieces that we could add to later. I approached it like building a house—after all, if the bones aren’t good, what’s the point? We’re now on our third collection, and when I look at it, I see a range of influences: Scandinavian, Italian, Shaker and American Primitive, to name a few. The pieces are layered and unpredictable. As I get older, I think about how my home reflects who I am and the places

I’ve been. There are stories in every piece. It’s not just furniture to me. I wasn’t trained as a textile or furniture designer. My work started because I’m a fine artist. The only way my sister and I knew how to commercialize my artwork was to turn drawings into patterns and patterns into textiles and then make products. That fine art connection shows in the new hand-painted pieces for Hickory Chair. Whatever custom finish you dream of, the company can do. Relationships are everything in this business and the partnership with Hickory Chair has been one of equal give and take—you can feel that with the people and see it in the craftsmanship. If we artists can collaborate with companies that are thoughtful in the same ways we are, it makes it all worthwhile.

Susan Hable photographed in her Athens, Georgia, studio surrounded by new Hickory Chair hand-painted furniture designs, which include the Walmsley Cocktail Table and Chad Side Table.

ARTICLE

LIAIGRE’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR FRAUKE MEYER ON CREATIVITY AND THE VALUE OF ORIGINALITY. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

If there is one piece that encapsulates Liaigre’s polished yet independent spirit, it is the brand’s sculptural Nagato stool inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s “Endless Column.” The iconic work, originally created by Christian Liaigre in 1986 from a solid piece of oak, was recently reinvented in a limited-edition bronze with a smooth black patina and wood print—a look that is at once brutalist and refined. “We rarely draw from our archives, and privilege fresh creative reflection for each project. Yet this piece combines minimalism and poetry, elegantly entering the domestic sphere,” says Liaigre’s Creative Director Frauke Meyer. As with the refreshed Nagato stool, independent thinking has been at the core of every piece since the company’s inception in the 1980s—and that’s what defines Liaigre. “My aim is to emphasize our French and Parisian identity, in which everything is well thought out, structured and finished, while still encouraging disruption, surprises and a break from the expected,” says Meyer, who likens the brand’s creative process to that of iconic fashion houses, such as Dries Van Noten, Azzedine Alaïa and Pierre Hardy. “We believe beauty is found through special attention

LX_COM30_Radar_Originality.indd 84

“It is important to interpret designs to fit into the context of current times,” says Liaigre Creative Director Frauke Meyer, an approach evident in pieces such as the Orient Suspension lamp (top, left), Touareg bench (center) and recently reissued bronze Nagato stool (bottom, right).

to ergonomics, usability and the touch and feel of materials exuding texture, comfort and luxury.” Unmoved by imitation designs, Meyer says it is the company’s strict attention to detail and proportion that set it apart. “The creation of each Liaigre design requires skill from expert hands,” says Meyer. “Whether brushed, sandblasted wood or full-grain leather tanned in France, the mastery of the craft is present throughout the production of each piece or architectural element.” A case in point is Liaigre’s lacquered panels and furnishings, where the finish is applied in as many as seven layers to achieve just the right sheen. This notion is also apparent in the brand’s sourcing, which involves employing “tree hunters” to discover the finest wood material from French forests. From inception to finished piece, Meyer attests: “Luxury is affirmed in every detail.”

STICKLEY REVITALIZES AMERICAN ARTS AND CRAFTS FURNITURE FOR A NEW GENERATION. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN S. REARDON

For more than a century, Stickley has made high-end hardwood furniture and fine upholstery. Now, with Director of Design Marissa Brown at the creative helm, the company has expanded to include fresh takes on the Mission look, as well as a midcentury-inspired line. Here, Brown describes how the brand’s history and devotion to craft informs her work. How do you honor Stickley’s heritage while moving the needle forward? I try to stay true to the company DNA and the components of a Stickley piece: the square spindles, the use of reverse taper leg details and the exposed joinery. One thing that inspired me was the ability to make furniture out of solid wood construction with techniques that have been used since the Stickley brothers were alive. Moving the brand into the future was about respecting that, while developing forms that felt more current in proportion.

Playing with iconic shapes must have been intimidating at first. It was scary; the pieces are perfect! It’s like trying to alter a Steinway piano. The horizontal and vertical components are so important in Mission-style furniture, but how do you modernize the look? I didn’t want to lose sight of what made them work, but I also wanted to soften them a little. You’ve mentioned that a trip to Hans Wegner’s studio was formative to your career. How does Danish design influence your work? I love the sculptural aspect of the Danish makers. During that era, woodworkers put so much thought into creating designs that not only looked good, but functioned beautifully. I like integrating those ideas into Stickley—that pieces should float in a room and be enjoyed from 360 degrees. We hear something new is coming for spring…Yes! This April at High Point we’re planning to debut a curated group of eclectic pieces. While designs are still evolving, the idea is to open up an offering of single items that use new materials and are interesting objects in their own right. On your wish list? The dining table from the Walnut Grove collection. I have three daughters, so I’d love to have pieces that will become family heirlooms.

Marissa Brown in the new Park Slope Accent Chair in the Stickley factory in Manlius, New York. Alongside Brown’s award-winning update is a 1989 reissue of the Spindle Chair, a Mission favorite patented by Gustav Stickley in 1905.

TALKING SHOP SJOTIME INDUSTRIES

At first glance, the handcrafted pieces that comprise custom furniture company Sjotime Industries’ first line of ready-made residential furnishings are striking in their simplicity. Crafted of white oak, these modern tables, seats and accessories rely on subtle details—notched tops that expose the end grain of subtly angled legs, the linear quality of rift-sawn wood—to catch the eye. But according to Sjotime (pronounced “show time”) founder Dan Sjogren, this style, which takes cues from Scandinavian furniture designs, is anything but simple. “The attention to detail, the primacy of materials in their natural state and the elegance of execution and composition…is a very challenging aesthetic to achieve,” he says. To pull it off, he and his team use modern technology and time-tested techniques to build each piece. The finished products are sold online and, as of last summer, at the Sjo Room, a storefront in Denver’s Golden Triangle neighborhood that Sjogren designed to feel like an apartment. “There’s an uncluttered, Scandinavian vibe to the interiors that’s meant to highlight the personality of each piece while giving customers a feel for how the furniture and artwork might work in their own homes,” he says. sjotime.com

Close your eyes and wrap your hands around a perfectly imperfect tumbler or pot by Boulder-based ceramicist Steffanie Woodward and you’ll find that her porcelain creations feel just as good as they look. Perhaps that’s because the founder of Lera Ceramics often makes her one-of-a-kind pieces with her eyes closed. “There is something about ceramics that is visceral to me,” she says. “It’s almost meditative.” Woodward encourages that feeling by handbuilding each functional object—without a potter’s wheel and using minimal tools—in her Airstream trailer-turned-studio using the techniques of pinch, coil and slab before finishing them with soft white glazes and doodle-like line drawings. “My work isn’t perfectly symmetrical, straight or smooth,” she says, “but the combination of simple and minimal with the added beauty of imperfection is special.” Shop for Woodward’s designs online or locally at Meek Vintage, the Artisan Center and at Guest House shoppable homes, and stay tuned for new items to covet, including ceramic and woven wool wall art. leraceramics.com

POST MASTERS WHO: Studio Thomas, a Denver design firm helmed by industry veteran Kristen Thomas and known for residential interiors that are tailored, timeless and luxurious in their striking simplicity.

WHY: You’ll gain a new appreciation for neutral colors, natural materials and classical architectural details, as well as the “less-but-better” design philosophy the Studio Thomas team espouses.

WHAT: Thomas and her team take cues from fashion (think: Ralph Lauren and other classic labels), architecture, nature and international travel when curating interiors, and you will find the styles and spaces that inspire their work—as well as gorgeous mood boards, vignettes and entire rooms they’ve created for their many Colorado clients—on their feed.

IN HER WORDS: “We don’t want to just show a pretty home; we want to capture the feeling of the kind of life you’re going to live in that home. We hope our followers will find inspiration to live well, to choose quality over quantity, and to curate their home with an intention that’s centered around the lifestyle they want to live, rather than the popular trends of the moment.”

BLUEPRINT

FOUR SEASONS RESORT AND RESIDENCES VAIL It may seem like just yesterday that the Four Seasons first brought its unique brand of luxury to Vail, but in 2020 the property is marking its 10th anniversary with the completion of a two-year, phased redesign project led by hospitality design firm Jeffrey Beers International, which brings a lighter, brighter, more contemporary style to nearly every nook and cranny, starting with the reimagined lobby (below), a relaxed, open space where guests can meet with concierge staff to craft the perfect stay. Guest rooms, suites, residence club units and private residences are appointed with clean-lined furnishings in neutral hues. Even the resort’s 8,500 square feet of meeting and event spaces sport a fresh take on highcountry style, ensuring that every stay—be it for business or pleasure— meets the needs of mountain travelers in style. fourseasons.com

CHECK IN LIFE HOUSE

When Rami Zeidan launched the Life House collection of hotels in 2017, he envisioned residential-style accommodations with design details closely tied to the history of each property’s unique neighborhood. This spring, when the first guests settle into Life House’s fourth location (and the first in Colorado), they’ll get to know the Lower Highland neighborhood’s cool mix of historic and modern architecture. Taking cues from Western frontier dwellings and Victorian-era opulence, the design merges warm wood tones, textured glass, patterned textiles and pops of yellows, reds and blues. Sixteen guest rooms and suites are appointed with Victorian-style wardrobes, leather-upholstered headboards and vintage-inspired Marshall speakers. For the ultimate group getaway, book a suite with a bunk room, where up to six full-size beds dressed in luxury linens are curtained for privacy. lifehousehotels.com

DATE BOOK JODI COOK

Interior designer and Wisconsin native Jodi Cook brought a breath of fresh air to Denver’s design scene when she launched Cook Design House in 2016; since then, she’s lightened the mood in countless Colorado homes with a style that’s as easygoing as Cook herself. “A luxury product is often defined as something that’s rare and expensive,” she says, “and we want to redefine it to mean beautiful yet livable.” With that in mind, Cook infuses her projects with handmade and heirloom furnishings, natural materials, and fabrics and finishes that can stand up to kids, pets and lively gatherings. Her warmth and taste for all things timeless inspired Luxe to ask where she likes to spend time when she’s not on the clock. Here, she shares a Denver day tour of the spots that speak to her style. cookdesignhouse.com 9 a.m. First stop: Vert Kitchen on South Pearl Street is a charming French bistro that’s the perfect place to grab breakfast or brunch. Their Croque Monsieur is amazing! I like to add a fried egg and make it a Croque Madame. 11 a.m. Drive to nearby Cherry Creek North for some shopping— Bloom by Anuschka (top, left), one of my favorite spots, has a playful mix of stylish and cheeky home decor, but don’t forget to check out their jewelry. I own a couple of pieces from Alex Fitz (a jewelry designer Bloom features). They also usually have a piece or two by Dallas-based painter and interior designer Kelly O’Neal, whose work I admire. 12 p.m. Grab lunch at True Food Kitchen, a health-focused restaurant in Cherry Creek North and one of my go-to spots, particularly if I’m doing a

cleanse. I love the earthy, organic vibe of the interiors, especially the wall of birch tree branches. 2 p.m. Head downtown to appreciate a bit of old Denver. On the way, drive through the Country Club Historic Neighborhood and ogle the gorgeous old homes. The architecture in this neighborhood makes it one of my favorites—I particularly love the Colonial and Tudor Revival-style homes. 4 p.m. Larimer Square is a go-to not only for shopping and dining but also because it’s Denver’s oldest block. It was saved from demolition in 1965 by developer and preservationist Dana Crawford and was named the city’s first historic district in 1971. I always pop into Aillea, a “clean beauty” store (top, right), to pick up some of Maya Chia’s The Super Couple Serum.

5 p.m. The last stop needs to be Union Station (center, right), which was originally built in 1881 and reopened in 2014 after redevelopment. The Beaux-Arts architecture is stunning and is best appreciated from the mezzanine level at the Cooper Lounge. Their cocktail list is out of this world and has something for everyone. My favorite is the Black Manhattan. 9 p.m. If it gets too late, you can stay at the Crawford Hotel at Union Station, or visit the nearby Hotel Teatro (right), a luxury boutique hotel and my favorite in town. I love the building, which is in the Renaissance Revival style and was built in 1911 to house the city’s public transportation system. The current vibe inside is tailored and masculine, with a bit of an industrial/vintage vibe.

Asked how they develop the best approaches and ideas, the Alvarezes point to two seemingly disparate, but truly complementary, notions.

Old-School Influences

“We are driven by the legacy of our late family members, on both sides, who ran successful companies,” Sam says. “They were in very different industries, but they were kindred in their old-world customer service values.”

In-Vogue Inspirations

While its philosophy on client relations stems from times gone by, Elevate’s offering is informed by the moment. “We love attending flooring expos and reading all of the latest magazine issues,” Jennifer says. “We also believe that social media is one of the greatest sources for a look into trends and what homeowners are actually installing.”

ELEVATE FLOORING DESIGN For husband-and-wife team Sam and Jennifer Alvarez, success lies in combining shared passions and reciprocal skill sets. The owners of Elevate Flooring Design began working on multimillion-dollar projects almost as soon as they met, and today, they lead a team of pros in helping others accomplish the same. Sam brings a vast and technically proficient knowledge of product to the showroom and each project site, while Jennifer possesses a love for customer service and sales. They have long had a reputation for expert installation, but now, the duo strives to round out the process, focusing, too, on assisting homeowners and the trade with selection. “Our goal is to have a beautiful, clean and inviting space where builders and designers can send their most discriminating clients,” they say. “We want to awaken a homeowner’s inner design eye and carefully hire staff that can identify and build upon a client’s ideas.”

“ We believe good design is simply to bring the client’s dream to life.”

conquers, perfecting unique parts of the process through dedicated work groups. “Many design-build firms lean more toward one discipline or the other,” Simpson says. “Those with an excessive focus on design will often fall short on execution, while firms with a heavy construction orientation will typically lack aesthetic innovation or interest, resulting in very little design appeal. We strive continually to keep these two dynamics in harmony.”

innovative home design that’s tailored to your life.

AT THE CORE when asked to describe the philosophy behind their firm, fiester and simpson point to a few key principles by which they work. Persistence: “We are obsessed with better results and diligently build upon our talents to ‘find a way’ in any situation.” Genuineness: “Our team members have the courage to do or say what is right. They are authentic and proud of it.” Balance: “We are selflessly committed to one another’s own successes, as well as those of the whole company. We also aim to be creative, yet agile and graceful. And of course, the equilibrium between design and construction is a major focus for us.” Humility: “Gratitude, kindness, empathy and respect … these are traits we value and emphasize among our employees.” Fun: “Our clients tell us they love working with us, and one reason for this is the warm and open environment we maintain throughout the journey.”

“ We understand both the art of style and the science of execution.”

THE BRIGHT WAY 90 YEARS OF AMERICAN ARTISTRY

OVER THE PAST NINE DECADES,

Bright Chair has established itself as a home for dedicated artisans who practice their time-honed skills without compromise. Founded in 1927 and acquired by the Gottlieb family in 1963, Bright is one of only a handful of family-owned and -operated companies producing traditionally crafted furniture, all made in America. In 1963, Bright moved into its own facility in Middletown, New York, allowing it to begin the important step of manufacturing frames and controlling all aspects of production. This vertical integration provides complete control of production, affording the versatility to customize to meet client needs and delivery requirements, while still offering attention to detail and assured quality control. “This is my house, but it was built on my father’s foundation,” says Bright Chair President, Stan Gottlieb. “And if my grandfather, the first of four generations in furniture, who came over from Europe as a master craftsman, walked through our plant today, he would not find our process unfamiliar.” Initially producing only commercial furniture, Gottlieb joined forces with furniture designer Douglas Levine in the 1990s, and together, they expanded the product offerings to cater to the executive suites as well as the residential market. As the residential side of the business grew, it gave rise to the birth of The Bright Group at the turn of the century. “For the first time, we opened a showroom specifically aimed at the residential market, which is quite different from where we came from. People want to see and feel the furniture in context alongside other ancillary offerings like lighting and case goods,” Gottlieb says.

With this evolution, Bright began creating strategic alliances with manufacturers that shared its mantra—independently-owned and -operated American companies producing only highly crafted, quality products. Today, The Bright Group represents 21 lines and has four showrooms across the United States—Boston, Chicago, Dallas and New York, as well as alliances with other premier showrooms in territories throughout the United States and abroad. Attention to detail and exact tailoring have become hallmarks of a piece of Bright furniture. Run your hand over one and you’ll know—it’s the feel of great tradition with a most modern sensibility.

OUTDOOR LIVING

LLOYD FLANDERS lloydflanders.com |

Functional and deliberate, outdoor spaces are where most people spend their highly valued, quality free time. Thus, comfort is a vital component of any outdoor design … and a feeling captured perfectly with Lloyd Flanders furniture. “All of our designs are adapted to the increasingly casual lifestyle and the desire for comfort with generous seats, plush cushioning, the incorporation of motion, and the latest performance fabrics and hardware,” president Dudley Flanders says. Using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and equipment, combined with more than 100 years of tradition and furniture knowledge, Lloyd Flanders produces the finest American outdoor furniture. Key to preserving their revered, heirloom quality is proper material selection and upkeep. Of the latter, Warren Juliano, senior vice president of sales and marketing, offers this tip: “Vacuum or use a soft brush on woven material and cushions to remove organic material and loosen surface soil, then rinse with a mild detergent and clean water.”

“Combining the best of the old with the improvements of the new yields heirloom-quality furniture.” 2

PROFESSIONAL TOUCH “Hiring a professional is important to make sure that the best materials are chosen for the right environment,” says vice president of sales Bryan Echols. Outdoor furniture is made from a wide range of materials that vary significantly in quality and durability. It’s vital to choose the right material for the particular climate. Professionals are also adept at maximizing the usage of a space. Many outdoor areas serve a variety of functions, so the furniture and accessories need to be flexible, whether the main purpose of the area is entertaining, relaxing or dining.

For a dramatic display of the Northern Lights, head to the Nordics and parts of Alaska and Canada to see bright colors illuminate the night sky. The Aurora Borealis starts when the sun releases charged particles that react with gaseous atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere. The gas, shifted by solar wind, dictates the vibrant hues that dance across the sky— neon greens emerge from low-altitude oxygen molecules and blues and purples result from nitrogen. Consider multiple trips: No two spectacles are the same.

INNER CIRCLE NAMIB DESERT, AFRICA

How do miles of mysterious rings of vegetation come to cover the dry ground of southern Africa’s Namib Desert? Folklore believes these ‘fairy circles’ to be footprints from the gods, while scientists cite the desert’s complex ecosystem for the peculiar markings. Regardless of how they got there, the repetition of spherical shapes creates a hypnotizing, polka-dot like motif, giving those with a bird’s-eye view an expansive, visual reminder that curved lines are always ‘in.’

ICE, ICE BABY BANFF NATIONAL PARK, CANADA

7

A contradicting play of fire and ice takes place in Alberta’s Banff National Park as winter sets in. When the lakes freeze over, bubbles rising toward the surface are stopped in their tracks. These particular bubbles are full of methane—the gas is emitted by bacteria living below the surface after consuming organic matter—and highly flammable if released near an open fire. Undisturbed, these frozen forms provide a study in motion and, more importantly, show how stunning science can be.

Soaring mountaintops are a feast for the eyes, but the Zhangye Danxia range in northern, central China boasts a particular beauty with brilliant stripes of reds, pinks and oranges—appearing as if the façade was painted with a brush. The effect is the result of some 24 million years ago, when deposits of sandstone and other minerals formed these intentional-looking layers. Combined with desert conditions, wind and erosion, the rock formations are regarded as one of the most beautiful landscapes in China.

ARCHITECTS

BERGLUND ARCHITECTS At Berglund Architects, every project begins with an intensive design charette consisting of a series of collaborative work sessions with the client, shares company president Hans Berglund. “Our process is inspired by the physical site, the sense of place and, most importantly, our client’s dreams. We find that homeowners who are really involved and engaged with the design, and give us honest feedback, get the most out of this whole endeavor.” It’s essential, Berglund feels, that they do. “No matter how much we like a design, if the client isn’t satisfied in the end we won’t be either.” Through a progression of sketches and conversations, Berglund and his team aim to understand how the client wants to feel in their home and how they see themselves living day to day, practically and ideally. Stephanie Lord-Johnson and Adam Gilmer, the principals who work alongside Berglund, elaborate: “We strive to create long-lasting relationships with all of our clients. These enduring connections are more valuable than any sort of recognition or financial reward. Without them, we would not be able to create such incredible homes.” And indeed, the firm’s list of repeat clients and diversely personalized projects proves the inherent worth of such an approach.

Adam Gilmer, Principal Hans Berglund, President Stephanie Lord-Johnson, Principal 970.926.4301 berglundarchitects berglundarchitects.com

“ Responding to the landscape is a defining factor in how our designs evolve.”

Ask the Expert Share your influences and inspirations. The Italian architect Carlo Scarpa used natural materials and craftsmanship in his modern, highly contextual projects, and we bring these same ideas to our work. What style is your firm most known for? Our work could be described as mountain modern or mountain vernacular. We try to use natural and locally sourced materials wherever possible, and clean, well-thought-out detailing is one of the defining characteristics of our work.

1

LX_CO68_PR_Berglund_mp.indd 1

What’s next for the firm? The majority of our projects are custom, single-family homes in Colorado, but we are increasingly doing more diverse work around the U.S. and internationally, and we hope to continue this trajectory.

Rich, textural finishes and a bold steel structure define a living room with no walls. The expanses of glass open the home up to the pool deck and river views beyond. 4. THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

SWIM SEASON A picturesque pool house becomes a family’s destination for year-round entertaining. Architect Louise Brooks of Brooks & Falotico walks us through the project. brooksandfalotico.com How did you decide on the location of the pool house? The pool already existed, and the area looks out to beautiful rolling hills, so we were set from the beginning on where we were going to construct the pool house. Even though it’s only a two-minute walk from the main house, it very much feels like a destination for the clients, a family with four children. They feel like they’re on vacation when they go over there. What was on the clients’ wish list? The homeowners really wanted a full working kitchen here, meaning a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave and sink since they use it often throughout the year for everything from Super Bowl celebrations to sleepover parties. Since it’s meant for entertaining, I wanted to keep the kitchen design straightforward with as little maintenance and upkeep as possible. We actually started with the creamy man-made countertops that can weather any storm or family gathering, and the rest of the scheme stayed in a similar neutral palette. We love the bright and airy ambience. The demand for indoor/outdoor spaces continues to grow and, in this case, I went with retractable doors and big windows that stay open during the warmer months for a light and fresh effect. I also chose materials that are very durable and aren’t precious. We kept finishes to a minimum and the entire kitchen is soft, open and very welcoming; it’s all about bringing the outside in here.

For the kitchen, Brooks went with a Rohl farmhouse sink and faucet along with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and Miele dishwasher. Liliane Hart Interiors designed the decor and furnishings for the pool house.

HIGH LIFE

For a spectacular patio kitchen in the Hamptons, Edmund Hollander, president of Hollander Design Landscape Architects, started with functionality. “Think about where you want your dining table to be in relation to other living areas and then look at aesthetics and what you want to see when you’re in the space,” he explains. Tucking the dining setting on the side of the house protects it from seaside winds and also takes advantage of beautiful views across a salt pond. hollanderdesign.com

CHILL OUT

St. Charles New York, the maker of luxury kitchens, has launched its first-ever kitchen collection consisting of three curated series that incorporate a distinct variety of finishes, woods, hardware and paint colors. Creative Director Karen Williams notes that “as kitchens have evolved from back of house to the most significant rooms of the home, the choices have become endless and overwhelming,” but the ultimate goal of this new program is to demystify the kitchen design process for the client. Shown is STC No. 1, which draws on the brand’s rich 85-year-old design history while simultaneously ushering in a more minimal, sleek style. stcharlesnewyork.com

The kitchen and bar on this Del Mar property serves as ground zero for the casual indoor/outdoor lifestyle that epitomizes Southern California. Duan Tran, partner at KAA Design, understood that entertaining here was a priority for his clients so he decided to embrace the grill rather than hide it. “We designed the area to support the social aspects of grilling and hanging with friends, so it became a focal feature within the space,” Tran reveals. Interior designer Mark Williams, who collaborated on the project, customized the hanging lanterns and barstools. kaadesigngroup.com

In this Beverly Hills, California, home, by McClean Design and Craig R. Bridging the divide between the interior and exterior are three walls of bronze-plated, stackable sliding glass doors from All Metal Window Corp. DIVE INTO NATURE FROM THE COMFORT OF HOME. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

THE GREAT INDOORS With each spring comes the desire to reconnect with the natural world. But rather than restrict the approach to the shifting seasons, we’re taking a year-round perspective to living with the outdoors. After all, ecotherapy is known to have restorative benefits, so why silo its riches? Here, we uncover a panoply of evergreen inspiration, from immersive architectural details and honest materials to magical spaces that blur the lines between indoor and out—like this bedroom by designer Lindsay Chambers, which seemingly floats like a lily pad above a saline pool.

INTO THE WOODS

For a Seattle couple who requested that their home feel like a virtual walk in the woods, DeForest Architects imagined a glass-and-blackened-steel structure cantilevering over the forest floor, canopied from all sides by evergreen trees and boasting postcard views of the Puget Sound. Recalls designer Andy Beers of Ore Studios, who later guided the “treehouse” through interior finishes and furnishings, “What was astonishing about construction was that when drywall went up, it changed the character of the house very little: It continued to feel like you were outside. And even though you’re floating and surrounded on all sides by glass, there’s a real sense of coziness and privacy.” deforestarchitects.com; orestudios.com

When tasked with outfitting a mintcondition screened-in porch in New England, the husband-and-wife design team of Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller adopted a less is more approach to celebrate the simplicity of its comforts—namely, shade, breeze and verdant views. Where the custom Groundwork table from Mecox Gardens offers a literal interpretation of bringing the outdoors in with its whitewashed tree trunk base, a zinc top and complementary DWR resin dining chairs keep the scheme both contemporary and stalwart. Of the considered mix, Carrier shares, “We wanted to pay homage to the home’s original Victorian architecture, while also addressing the owner’s desire for a more modern look and family-friendly materials.” carrierandcompany.com

CLEAR VISION “You can’t escape the weather when you live in the Scottish Highlands,” says Petra Palumbo. “It’s in your face, all-consuming, ever-changing, extreme and unbelievably beautiful.” This reverence for Mother Nature is evident in the U.K.-based homeware designer’s collections both in motifs and mission. Take, for example, signature pieces like the crystal orange jug and tumbler (shown), which are made to order, hand-painted in natural inks and shipped in recycled packaging. “We take a holistic approach to sustainability,” says Palumbo. “We are certainly not perfect and have many areas we need to refine, but it’s a start.” petrapalumbo.com

Consider the weatherworthy drinks trolley from the new Arc by Winch Design for Summit Furniture collection. Combining Winch’s roots in yacht design and Summit’s dedication to the finest sustainable teak, the debut collaboration offers an elegant take on seaside style, evidenced in its sleek finishes and rounded edges, and echoed in its name—Arc—a nod to maritime shapes like the lines of latitude and longitude, the curve of the horizon and the silhouette of a full sail. summitfurniture.com; winchdesign.com

While a rarity stateside, solariums are a cultural mainstay in Europe. Inspired by spaces enjoyed during frequent travels throughout Switzerland and Germany, a couple asked their longtime designer, Christina Roughan, to devise a glass addition off the back of their home in Greenwich, Connecticut. A collaboration between Roughan Interiors, Argus Development and Jones Byrne Margeotes Partners, the immersive enclosure features three walls of bi-fold doors with remotecontrol screens, and an open-concept furniture scheme fit for lounging, dining and entertaining in every season. “Last Fourth of July, it hosted guests for fireworks and during the winter solstice, the family will watch old movies and stargaze,” says the designer, adding, “It’s quite impressive to watch TV while lounging upon a heated floor and enjoying snow falling all around you.” roughaninteriors.com; argusdevelopmentllc.com; jbmparch.com

PAST PERFECT

On a hillside cradling Tennessee’s Pickwick Lake, Asheville, North Carolina-based firm Carlton Edwards fashioned a winter garden room for enjoying the dramatic vista. Drawing inspiration from great American lake lodges built in the 1930s and ’40s, textured fieldstone masonry and turned timber columns were employed to lend a nostalgic feel. But where the architectural envelope channels woodsy encampments of yesteryear, modern comforts abound in details like ceiling heaters, a steel-clad fireplace, and lowslung, slipcovered furnishings, which mingle with insouciance amongst indoor plantings. Notes firm Design Director Jeff Edwards, “It’s a nod to the past, but a rustic, modern interpretation. We wanted the room to feel warm and inviting—like an old friend.” carlton-edwards.com

The long VIEW Scandinavia has long been recognized as a leader in sustainability—a concept embraced as a lifestyle rather than a catchphrase. So, who better to turn to for a lesson in green living than the fourth-generation owner of Dinesen, Denmark’s 120-year-old premier wood flooring company? “The core of our business is the excellent raw wood, and that commits us to constantly making an effort to use the material in the best possible way,” says owner Thomas Dinesen. “We are fully aware of the effort that precedes the tree before it reaches our hands.” dinesen.com

WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY

⊳ FOREST THROUGH THE TREES In an era of speed and convenience, Dinesen takes a refreshingly measured approach. “The logs we get are typically between 80 and 200 years old,” says owner Thomas Dinesen, adding that it requires generations of foresters in France and in Germany’s Black Forest (shown) to nourish trees for the resulting floor boards and wall paneling. Plus, he adds, “You only cut trees when it is beneficial for the land.” Case in point: a German supplier whose forest has been in the family since the year 1600. “This is only possible if you think ahead of your time,” says Dinesen. “Gather what you need from nature but leave something for future generations.”

AGE OF REASON ⊲ Rather than reject imperfections, Dinesen embraces the natural blemishes resulting from a tree’s 150-year-old life span, as seen here in the expressive Heart Oak panel. “The outcome is unfathomably beautiful planks that both aesthetically, and in strength, last for many generations,” says Dinesen. That same philosophy applies once installed. “Our planks become more beautiful when used. Sliding your hand over a worn plank or railing and noticing the grains of the wood and the growth rings creates a special feeling of well-being—a bit like a face full of wrinkles and creases reflecting a life well lived.”

LX_COM30_TheLook_TheReport.indd 167

▲ HYGGE LIFE Call it what you want, but creating a calm, cozy and stress-free home environment tops many a design wish list, and Dinesen wholeheartedly subscribes to this notion. “For us, creating well-being is very important. The more uneasy your daily life becomes, the more you will need a place that creates peace and balance,” says the owner. “That is what our wood can do.” An oak plank arranged in a herringbone pattern, such as the one shown above, can evoke that elusive sense of serenity.

THE GREAT DIVIDE

Light and shadow. Concrete and glass. Often, the most impactful indoor-outdoor designs come down to simple dualities—a hallmark of architect Scott Mitchell’s projects. In celebration of his work’s first volume (Scott Mitchell Houses, Rizzoli), we asked the California architect to speak to his distinct approach to connecting the natural and built environments. scottmitchellstudio.com Best way to incorporate nature: With deep overhangs and a continuity of material planes that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces. Design should be experienced... As a narrative. As with film or music, the journey begins with the arrival sequence. From there, there is less a concern for a formality gradient as for a flowing connectivity of spaces. Dream project: A public aquarium. Up next: A boutique hotel on Phillip Island, Australia, and a modern farm outside Toronto. Every home needs: The psychology of shelter. A house should be a safe and comfortable harbor from the world.

OUTDOOR LIVING / COLORADO

“Outdoor living is an opportunity to show off personal style and taste without the limits of interior walls.”

CREATE A CULINARY MASTERPIECE Make the most of an outdoor kitchen design, with these tips from the Creative Living team. + Think bigger than the usual masonry grills, powder-coated stainless-steel cabinets and barbecue tables. Explore the addition of smokers, teppanyaki-style grills, patio ovens, wok rings and sear stations. + Coordinate finishes with those from the interior culinary spaces. + Incorporate heaters to ensure that the area can be used comfortably year-round.

Some of the most unusual requests Creative Living has catered to are those from clients who long for custom artwork. “Since we work with many local artists, we do get inquiries about original pieces and changes to sizes and colors on our existing offerings,” Stone explains. “Recently, we were asked to design a triptych metal privacy screen with a geometric pattern, and one time, a client wanted a ‘floating’ outdoor kitchen inspired by their ‘floating’ master bath, which was their favorite part of the home.” 2

In many ways, the greatest challenge of outdoor living is furnishing it. Yes, the landscaping is key, but the selection of pieces that are stylish and suited for open-air use ... that’s a tall order. Denver’s Creative Living is ready for it. A purveyor of modern exterior decor, the showroom and design firm boasts a vast selection of furnishings, planters, fire and water features, powder-coated outdoor kitchens and artwork for the alfresco environment—and the advice to bring it all together. “We start by listening to our client’s vision,” says Micheline Stone, who owns Creative Living. “Once we are on the same page, we design a layout with options that fit their budget and style.” The latter is important to Creative Living’s team members, who believe customization is the highlight of design. “Be it through a funky seating area or a uniquely structured fire pit, a homeowner’s personality can shine through,” Stone says. Indeed, outdoor spaces no longer need be standardized; they are as individual as the rooms within one’s home.

THE HOT PICK? Fire features are a game changer for outdoor living spaces. “Many people seeking an outdoor entertaining space want something cozy and warm that can function throughout the year,” says LeAnn Ostheimer, Lifescape’s executive vice president. “Fire features are also very interactive, and many of the designs end up looking like artwork when properly placed.”

A GUIDE TO THE PERFECT PROPERTY + P ursue customized maintenance. “Your lawn, trees and plantings can get diseases and catch ailments,” Ostheimer says. “A team of experts, working off of a plan unique to your garden, is key.” + E xplore innovative ideas. As technology changes, design should match it with groundbreaking, stylish solutions. Lifescape has won more than 50 awards, and many speak to their ability to balance the state-of-the-art and biological. + K eep the future in mind. Sustainability is the way. “We are mindful of soil preparation, offer an organic package and incorporate xeriscaping principles in every project,” Hupf says.

LIFESCAPE COLORADO 303.831.8310 | lifescapecolorado.com |

Just as an ideal indoor space is comfortable, livable and functional, outdoor living areas must combine all aspects of aesthetic and practicality for their users. For the team at Lifescape Colorado, achieving this depends entirely on understanding the client. “The beauty lies in how a space feels to its owner,” says company owner Michael Hupf. “So, we start by asking questions. Which is more important: view expansion or privacy? Do they want something playful or are they looking to promote serenity? From the answers, we gain a holistic perspective on how the design should blend function and form.” Lifescape then executes that vision through the collaboration of its varied experts—some of the industry’s best in horticulture, design, construction, property care and irrigation. All the while, the design-build/property care firm maintains a focus on the long-term health of the landscape.

“ A garden shouldn’t look its best the day it’s planted. It should look its best years down the road, when it has grown, changed and matured.”

Those were just two of the many charms that enticed the owners of a Prohibition-era, Tudor-style home in the Denver Country Club. On the exterior, bricks laid in a diamond pattern, dormer windows with leaded windowpanes, and a steep gable evoke a storybook ambience, while a stone crest engraved with the letter “T” recalls the original owners—a family named Temple. But the home’s historic relevance meant the design needed to be sensitive. To strike a balance between respecting its past and accommodating a modern family of five, the new owners turned to designer Andrea Schumacher, who had worked on their previous residences. The focus, Schumacher says, was taking the bones of a traditional Tudor and infusing it with a lighter, modern aesthetic that’s both beautiful and practical. “We wanted the home to have a sense of history, but with a fresh take reflecting a young family,” she says. Intricate moldings and woodwork throughout set a warm, elegant tone, but the brown wood was a little too dark for the family’s liking. To offset it, Schumacher painted some of the panels white and brightened the space further through lighter upholstery and carpeting. “I think the most nerveracking part was picking the paneling that we were going to paint versus what we weren’t,” she laughs. “You can’t easily remove the paint, so we were all clenching our teeth and hoping it would work. It came out perfectly!”

LX_CO68_HOM_Schumacher_14.indd 216

Having worked on the interiors of the family’s previous home, the designer knew which of their pieces would work in the new space and which needed to be updated or reupholstered. Schumacher added texture with vibrant, patterned fabrics as well as playful wallpaper and drapery. She also replaced the dark, gothic light fixtures with simple antique brass candle-style chandeliers. Since the new home was larger than the family’s previous abode, it allowed them to keep the living room as a more formal entertaining space, complete with a fireplace, dramatic ceiling beams, diamond-paned windows and a grand piano. The extra square footage also means that the kids have a designated playroom on the second floor, allowing for an injection of fun—such as an animal print rug and yellow ottomans—to juxtapose with the rest of the house’s more traditional decor. While the owners are partial to spending time in the living room, Schumacher says she is particularly fond of the dining room, which features elaborate ceiling moldings and paneling. “Sometimes dining rooms can be formal—and this one does have a formality to it,” she says. “But then the softness of the chairs and the fact that the table is round makes it a bit more casual. It is very comfortable, and you can see yourself hanging out here for a long time.” And then there’s the speakeasy. Part of the original 1928 home—but not included on the house plans that the owners sourced from the Denver Public Library—the clandestine room behind a hidden door features more than just a bar and lounge. Overlooking the space is a mural depicting what the owners suspect is a scene of downtown Denver in the late 1800s. “We’ve worked with the History Colorado Center to try to figure out who the artist is, and they told us that if the painting is on canvas, it’s likely a more noteworthy artist,” says the owner. “But if it was painted on concrete then it was probably just a family friend.” Turns out, it’s on canvas, but the artist’s identity is still a mystery, only serving to add more intrigue to the space. To evoke the dark, moody vibe of a speakeasy—and to complement the exposed brick—Schumacher opted for rich, red textiles for the sofa and rug, creating a cozier, more intimate gathering alternative to the dining or living room. Of course, the story behind the speakeasy (and the home in general) is all part of what makes it so charming. “I hope people feel all of the stories that came before us in this house, but also sense that a modern family lives in it now,” the owner says. “We love going out to dinner with friends and then walking home to have a drink in our speakeasy. Being able to have that history of the space, but also the proximity of the city, is one of the things that we love about the house.”

oulder may be more than 1,200 miles to the closest ocean, but that didn’t stop architects Annette and Dennis Martin from building their dream beachfront-inspired home there. But in this house, the vistas are of undulating hills and noble mountains—a panorama rivaling any seaside view. The Martins, partners in both business and life, are travel enthusiasts who love vacationing in waterfront locations designed to embrace the beach landscape. One house in particular, however, became the broad-brush impetus for their mountain abode. “We were inspired by a waterfront home in the Hamptons that allowed a glimpse of the ocean through the main room,” Annette says. “It was so inviting, we wanted that feeling here.” The memory of that drove the architects to recreate the look and feel of it on a site perched among the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Using the New York dwelling as their benchmark, they designed a house that wholeheartedly celebrates alpine views from the first room. Built around a central courtyard to allow privacy from the street, the home welcomes guests both formally and informally. Exterior materials—gray Kansas limestone, rich brown vertical siding and light-painted wood—come together to create a warm, textural first impression. Refined architectural elements and contrasting rustic details feel more carefree than staid. A limestone path guides guests through the courtyard to a beguilingly ornamented entry porch and large, wooden door. But when stepping into the entry and around a mirrored wall, the view is revealed, and that’s when the magic happens. “The entry sequence offers an anticipation of the view beyond,” Annette notes. “From there, guests are led to the great room, which is designed to be as transparent as possible, with oversize doors framing the amazing scenery.” The great room acts as an elegant epicenter as well as a floor plan intermediary, graciously linking the kitchen,

living and dining rooms while simultaneously insulating the master suite from the more public spaces. Design devices— statement lighting, built-in bookshelves and varying ceiling planes—delineate the large, open room into utilitarian subspaces, while white oak floors with a whitewashed gray finish throughout the home connect the dots. In the living room, two seating areas provide further spatial cues. Center stage, a smattering of smoky-hued furnishings plays off the dark tones of the kitchen cabinetry and form an entertaining-friendly space for gatherings. Nestled up to generously scaled sliding doors that open to the terrace, the interior space blends seamlessly with the outdoors. Across the room, a trio of seats dressed in blue velvet and nailhead trim form an intimate seating vignette created for fireside tête-à-têtes. Four kaleidoscopic Andy Warhol lithographs bring to mind summer flower gardens, colorfully crowning a streamlined concrete fireplace with a herringbone detail. This small but mighty gathering spot packs a vibrant punch, energizing the otherwise neutral palette and offsetting verdant views. “We wanted this room to become part of the outdoors,” Annette says. “The artwork and accent pieces really pop with their touches of bold color.” Elegant and composed, the adjoining kitchen is a unifying element. Reminiscent of the home’s exterior, with the same contrasting tones and mix of materials, it feels equally light and dark, formal and relaxed. The 14-foot-long island is a study in yin and yang, its ebony cabinets topped with glowing Calacatta Borghini marble that’s seemingly lit from within. Jewel-like, champagne-hued ceramic tile balances the more casual painted paneling above. Translucent pendant lights over the island provide a hint of sparkle— subdued yet expressive. “We brought the exterior palette, which is light and neutral with dark accents, inside,” Annette says. “The kitchen is very calming, which we love.” Equally comforting is the master suite, clad in an earthy hue that Annette refers to as an all-encompassing “brown, gray and green.” Separated from the great room via an ante room, the bedroom feels secluded and hushed—a private oasis punctuated with confident pattern that’s quieted by a cream-colored upholstered bed and shapely lacquered bedside tables. The scene stealer here, however, may just be the floorto-ceiling windows and doors that open to a generous rear terrace that runs the length of the house—though “terrace” may be a bit of an understatement. The space was envisioned to be a well-used outdoor room, complete with intricately designed beams, curvaceous brackets and lofty proportions equally appropriate for espying mountains or sandy beaches. “Coloradoans are outdoor people,” Annette says. “We wanted to create a grand area that exemplifies everything about outdoor living.” It’s that love of the landscape and classic style that relates this mountain home to the Hamptons dwelling that inspired it. Yet it possesses a personality all its own. “All of the details and finishes are modern renditions of traditional designs,” says Annette. “I’d call this house a contemporary classic.”

SILVER LINING TO FIND INSPIRATION FOR HER SPIRITLIFTING ABSTRACT PAINTINGS, A DENVER ARTIST LOOKS SKYWARD. WRITTEN BY KATE ABNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIMENA PECK

Artist Laura Guese mixes paints for her cloud works in a tray (below). The artist usually paints with four or five brushes in hand. Her palette of blues (bottom) was inspired by her time in France. Guese stands in her RiNo Art District studio (opposite), where the sky views influence her work.

W

hen Laura Guese paints her large-scale works depicting abstract cloud formations, she never starts with a photograph. Instead, she begins with a feeling. “I think the work is more authentic that way,” she explains. For the artist, that work is a meditative process, a mode of expressing whatever emotion is currently gripping her. Clouds have been a part of Guese’s life since she was growing up under the sweeping skies of the High Plains. Because her grandfather was a meteorologist, names for cloud formations—such as mammatus and cumulonimbus—were a part of her everyday vocabulary. But it was only while she was attending college in Northern California (where she was inspired by the rolling fog) that cloud imagery began to show up in her work. Since returning to the Mile High City about 10 years ago, Guese has made a sanctuary in her River North Art District studio—an industrial space on the second floor of a building that was once a soda factory in the 1920s. The room’s north-facing windows and views of dynamic skies help her subject matter fully materialize. From here, the artist has a front-row seat at an ever-changing nature show. “I can watch large thunderheads grow and change and shift throughout the day; I am intrigued by how strong and solid they look, but they’re just vapor. They’re otherworldly to me,” she says. For Guese, painting these atmospheric formations is a way to process anxiety or anger, excitement or elation. She adds: “I love to engulf the viewer in the clouds and give them that feeling of being lost for a minute.” The artist’s complicated technique begins at the bottom right-hand corner of the canvas, with

LX_CO68_SM_Guese_4.indd 240

strategic strokes pushing outward and upward to lend the paintings their telltale loftiness. “I usually have four or five brushes in my hands at a time,” she says. Just as her brushwork lifts the downy silhouettes, Guese hopes her works elevate the spirits of their viewers, too—as avid collectors at George Billis Gallery in Los Angeles and Walker Fine Art in her native Denver can attest. Oil paints give the artist’s larger paintings luminosity, but she occasionally creates smaller works on paper with gouache and pastels. “It’s fun to play around with the layers, and gouache is great for creating hazy atmospheric conditions,” says Guese. Guese’s mid-career works, a series dubbed “Castles in the Sky,” have somewhat of a surrealist quality. A 2012 artist residency in France was what ultimately cemented her move to abstraction—and also triggered a new preferred palette. Gone are the bold reds and golds of the American West in favor of the soft blues and indigos she’d seen in northeastern France. Still, a shift to cooler tones hasn’t made the works any less electric. Vividness, Guese says, comes from her use of contrast. “I love the edges, that kind of suggestion of illumination implied by shadow lines,” the artist notes. “It’s a hopeful kind of thing, a reminder of the positive side of life.” A silver lining, if you will.

n 1928, architect Burnham Hoyt—a Denver native— designed a storybook brick Tudor in what is now a historic neighborhood in his hometown. One of five notable architects contributing to Denver’s City Beautiful movement of that era, Hoyt incorporated Jacobean, English Norman and French Provincial elements into the home’s design. Nearly a century later, a modern-day couple with three kids fell in love with the home’s history, style and location—but not its 1970s addition. That expansion had left the home with some troublesome quirks the new occupants wanted to address. “The family room didn’t relate to the house and backyard, and there were many unnecessary little rooms,” says architect Steve Ekman, who worked with designer Peggy Robbins Bender and general contractor Doug Canady to restore and renovate the residence. “The new owners wanted to make this home their urban oasis.” They also wanted to preserve its historic details, which thrilled Ekman, a former trustee for Historic Denver. His team dug up the original architectural plans

and photos at the Denver Public Library. “I have a historian on staff and he loves to do research,” Ekman says. “It’s sort of like archaeology for a house.” General contractor Doug Canady restored the home’s exterior—and many interior elements—to its former glory. “There was so much work to be done—we cleaned the stone and the brick to bring out the old details,” says Ekman. “Doug did a great job of making the exterior sing.” Inside, the original living room, dining room and hallways were preserved but the additions at the rear of the house were removed to start fresh with more spacious, functional rooms. Ekman’s team worked with Bender—one of their many collaborations—to create livable spaces that would accommodate contemporary furnishings. When styling the interiors, Bender let the home’s finishes lead the way. “The beautiful thing about a Tudor is the texture,” she says. “The palette is about rough-hewn timbers, stone and wood. There is a lot of warmth in the wood, and blue is a nice foil—so we pulled a lot of blues in with fabrics.”

In the airy great room, a Visual Comfort & Co. chandelier mimics the architecture of the ceiling. Below it, a custom Taraval sectional from Crate & Barrel provides comfortable seating around a coffee table from Whitney Evans Ltd. Previously lined with dark wood paneling, the dining room was painted soft gray to give it a fresh outlook. The original cabinetry features linen-fold doors, a classic Tudor detail that was replicated in the new door to the right. To refresh the homeowners’ dining set, the chairs were reupholstered in a Galbraith & Paul fabric from John Brooks Inc. The hand-carved Courcelles chandelier is by Vaughan.

Bender also incorporated playful patterns and splashes of color. In the entryway—where classic timbers, plaster and brickwork abound—she placed an elegant armchair upholstered with a head-turning fuchsia print. A few coats of soft gray paint freshened up the dark and dated woodpaneled dining room while at the same time helping to create a visual transition between the original part of the house and the new addition. “We found this great antique Jacobean-style sideboard that really adds detail to the room,” Bender says. In the living room, the timbers remain as they were, giving the room a cozy feel. With three kids and the family’s St. Bernard, Rufus, running around, the room offers an “away” space for the couple, with a drawing room feel. “It has the only original wood-burning fireplace,” Bender says. The new great room is the family gathering spot. At one end, a Marvin accordion door folds back to link the space to the yard. Bender says the challenge with historic renovations is thoughtfully updating a home to make it functional. “A folding door—such a modern notion—seems like an unlikely fit for a Tudor great room, but it works,” she says. That door plus a host of new windows lend the formerly inward-facing home a strong connection to the outdoors. “The landscape is a huge part of this project,” Bender says. “You can’t have everything opening out without having something fabulous to open up to.” Landscape designer Paul Wrona delivered by creating a lush, soothing garden. “We planted roses as the foreground for ornamental grasses,” he says. “We wanted wisteria to grow up the pergola and used a lot of grasses and a mix of perennial colors so there’s something blooming at all times.” Wrona also custom designed a swimming pool, as well as an outdoor dining area and a lounging spot. A 12-foot privacy wall was added to screen a new office building behind the property, and gently bubbling water features mask any traffic noise while also being lovely to look at. The once labyrinthian home now suits the needs of the family while maintaining its old-world Tudor elegance. Ekman says: “The homeowner tells us that it functions so well, they are entertaining a lot more—they even had the husband’s company Christmas party here. It’s opened up their world.”

ANNOUNCING: THE RESIDENCES AT RENDEZVOUS CENTER

Koelbel and Company in Winter Park

Upon entering this exquisite French provincial home, one takes in the stunning stairway bathed in natural sunlight from the skylight above. The residence boasts 7 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a large master suite with a walk-in closet, a built-in hot tub and spacious heated patios. Mature trees offer ample privacy, but this property is just steps from Gondola One.

Noteworthy developer Koelbel and Company presents townhome villas and flats in stunning mountain modern designs, at “Main and Main,” in the heart of Winter Park. This community offers in-town walkability and easy access to recreation areas, and it is only 69 miles from Denver. All of that, and yet, these homes are priced well under those in other mountain communities.
