Something BORROWED ARCHITECT NINA EDWARDS ANKER SWIFTLY ADVANCES THE CONVERSATION ON SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
Leave it to Nina Edwards Anker to design a residence that personifies sustainability. The New York-based architect received her doctorate from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design leading to her acclaimed Southampton project, Cocoon House. Here, Anker opens the doors to her Gold LEED-certified home and forward-thinking approach to the built environment. What was your biggest takeaway from studying in Norway? The minimalist aesthetic really resonates with me. Norwegian Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sverre Fehn made structures nestled into the landscape. I was drawn to the contrast between the little homes set against the vast water and snowscapes. That shaped my attitude as to how architecture relates to nature. Let’s talk about the Cocoon House and its unusual curved shape! I was inspired by a yurt in Vermont. I’m interested in how we can use scientific technologies to do what our ancestors did. One of my favorite times of year in the house is a sunny winter day, sitting in a T-shirt in the living room with no heat on and it’s still so warm. These ancient typologies worked for a reason. Your perspective focuses on affect before effect. The starting point is you have a family member with a health issue—in this case, my son has asthma—and you address that before anything else, so the house is a purely timber ‘breathable’ structure. It’s better for breathability and for the climate in terms of CO2 release. So health and sustainability go hand-in-hand? How we address our spaces in terms of well-being and the environment should be in sync. The orientation of the site, breezes, sunlight, lack of clutter—that’s all wellness. Share another example of a well-designed LEEDcertified building. I love the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center. It’s a gateway between the urban and natural landscape. Just because it’s sustainable, doesn’t mean it needs to be overly technical or intimidating. What's next? My book on the Cocoon House launches in August. I’m also working on the Flora and Fauna Extinction Project, making furnishings inspired by plants going extinct in the natural world.

Paradise FOUND AFTER AN IMPASSIONED RESTORATION, THE SAN YSIDRO RANCH OPENS THE LAST OF ITS DOORS. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TREVOR TONDRO
The silver lining to nature’s wrath is that it tends to bring out the strength and ingenuity in people— and such was the case when mudslides struck the San Ysidro Ranch in 2018. Nestled in the Montecito foothills, much of the beloved resort was buried under mud when a deluge following the Thomas Fire sent rivers of topsoil down the mountains. For owner Ty Warner and the architects at Appleton Partners—who had collaborated on its historical restoration years prior—the mission was clear. First, revive the property to even greater splendor. Second, protect it for future generations by working in tandem with the topography. “We kind of rebuilt from an earthworks point of view,” explains Ken Mineau, principal and project architect. This translated to using the enormous sandstone boulders that had tumbled down the mountain to buttress the banks of the San Ysidro Creek and the foundations of its abutting cottages—a few of which were rotated away from the water. In an imperative investment, a debris basin above the ranch was enlarged to catch future fall, and 400 mature olive and oak trees were planted to restabilize the terrain. With the landscape reborn, a crew of roughly 250 subcontractors descended each day for a year and a half, intent on reestablishing the same architectural flavor to the damaged buildings. Materials catalogued during their first renovation, such as antique oak floors and limestone slabs, were installed anew as an assembly line of tradesmen worked their way up the creek. “It was a Herculean effort, but it’s back to what it was and that’s a beautiful thing,” Mineau says. “Every rock, every tree, every roof is back in place.” Save for one exception: The boulder that came six inches shy of wiping out the 1825 Old Adobe. That stone will remain alongside the historic landmark, defiant. This season, bringing the revival full circle, the last four creekside cottages reopen, beckoning guests with bird song and a piece of history embalmed with great care. “It’s a healing moment,” notes Mineau. “This particular story is just one of many past and many chapters to come.”

A NEW WAVE OF CUSTOM HOMES ADDRESSES AN INCREASED APPETITE FOR NATURE-FIRST DESIGNS. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN LEAK
The words “development” and “sustainability” don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a growing number of architects and developers are working to change that perception, and are doing it in a way that connects luxury homebuyers with nature. “The smart use of natural resources in architecture is the key to a better future,” says David Lang, principal at Lang Architecture, who recently designed a lakefront community in Taylor, Mississippi, with this approach in mind. “For buyers, it’s an investment in preserving and protecting the landscape, which furthers a sense of ownership.” At Splinter Creek, the setting takes center stage. Homes on the 650-acre property “minimize human intervention into nature, while maximizing the effects on habitants,” says Lang. Each home—in addition to being crafted with sustainable materials and passive solar techniques—is designed to seem as one with the bucolic landscape. Inspired by nearby barns, Lang composed the handsome, modern structures with materials such as cypress timbers and galvanized metal. “The locally sourced wood will gray as it weathers,” says Lang. “And when it does, it will blend in with the environment.” But that’s not to say “blending” the dwellings means nestling them into the ground. On the contrary, homes sit, at least partly, on stilts and piers. Not only does this give them the appearance of hovering, it minimizes the touch of man on the earth. “It also allows for a great water view,” adds Lang. Experiencing the water and nature is also by design. Large window walls are oriented to the lakes and the volumes are broken up into separate buildings—sometimes connected by a traditional dogtrot, or open-air passage—allowing residents to experience their surroundings as they move through the day. The architect calls the luxurious homes meticulously detailed and refined, but they’re not opulent mansions—most designs clock in at roughly 2,000 square feet. “Although they are generous, especially in the public spaces, they are smaller houses created that way intentionally, so they don’t overwhelm the landscape,” says Lang. “To us, a strong connection with nature and simplicity are the ultimate luxuries.”

THE INSIDER
“How do we take a space with not much going for it and turn it into something special?” That was the question facing Fiona Arnold and Jeffrey Knott—owners of Denver’s Blue Sparrow Coffee and the cocktail lounge Room for Milly—when they set about transforming a dark and uninviting space on the ground floor of the RiNo development The Hub into a buzzworthy new cafe and bar. Their response: “By viewing all of those shortcomings as strengths,” says Knott, who collaborated with Arnold and designer Tamra Holton to develop Queens Eleven’s moodychic decor. Behind the room’s walnut-topped bar, a vibrant mural by Valencian street-art duo PichiAvo blends graffiti with classical art, setting the stage for the rest of the space where traditional touches—vintage leather sofas, a sparkling chandelier—mingle with more daring design elements, most notably Denver photographer Kristen Hatgi Sink’s avantgarde takes on traditional portraiture. A tall banquette upholstered in rich dusk-blue velvet offers the best seats in the house. “If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had a go-to neighborhood bar,” Knott says, “this would be where they would sit.” Like those royal disruptors, Queens Eleven is refreshingly deviant. “So often, I walk into a coffee shop, bar or restaurant and can immediately feel what was value-engineered out of the place,” Knott says. “But thoughtful, intentional spaces are the cornerstone of what we do. For veteran interior designer Mikhail Dantes, opening a new showroom at the Denver Design District was like stepping into a comfy new pair of shoes. Dantes, in partnership with his brother, Ron, launched Denver design firm D+D Interiors more than 30 years ago and also co-owned the cutting-edge furniture showroom Town for 14 years before departing to start a to-the-trade business devoted to bringing fresh design talent to Colorado and the surrounding states. Will you share a few highlights? Chuck Moffit does limited-edition furnishings in bronze and steel that are really special and unique. You throw one of his pieces into your setting and it elevates the whole design. Fromental’s handdone wallcoverings can be bold or subtle, but they’re always amazing. And Joseph Pagano, of the lighting brand Joseph Pagano Studios, hand-blows his own glass, manufactures his own fittings and finishes everything in his shop, and you can see the meticulous way in which everything is put together. These vendors are so proud of what they produce—and happy to have a showroom like mine, where they can sell what they love to make.

MOD’s modern-leaning inventory includes furnishings, fabrics, wallcoverings, lighting, rugs, accessories and even fine art. What drew you to the collections you represent? Designers are always looking for the new best thing, and I wanted to bring in smaller boutique lines helmed by people with some kind of design background or furniture-making history. A lot come from established furniture-making families. Kimberly Denman and her husband previously owned antiques shops and the influence of that is evident in their collection. Many of our other furniture and lighting lines were launched by former interior designers. You can see the passion that goes into their work.

The wintry opulence of a bluebird day in Aspen is an irresistible draw to travelers, including fine-art photographer Gray Malin, who chose the ski town as the setting for his latest series, “Gray Malin in Aspen.” “I am completely drawn to the alpine lifestyle that Aspen offers—its exclusivity and the joyful energy that bubbles up with every experience,” Malin says. With that in mind, he chose a variety of locales around town and on the slopes to transform into modern snow-globe scenes with a vintage twist. “My goal was to explore the concepts of nostalgia and memories, challenging viewers to think of them in a more imaginative way.” graymalin.com

What inspired your decision to marry painting and photography? Mainstream photography always felt like more of a tool or a starting point; a bit too close to reality. This pushed me back to the traditional materials that I hadn’t used since high school: paint, of course, but I find myself continually testing and learning from other materials as well. Walk us through your process of combining those materials. I’m always capturing interesting things and places—I take over 10,000 images every year. I spend a lot of time manipulating an image digitally, then typically use a gel-alcohol method to transfer that image to a substrate. From there, I’ll use standard acrylic paint, oil pigments, encaustic paint, or gold or silver leaf to complete a piece, often finishing with a layer of clear encaustic wax. What provides the jumping-off point for a new work? Frequently, my inspiration stems from nature, but when I reflect on my interest in human creations—like cities or machinery—I’m finding that it’s really complex systems and components that draw my attention. Is there a takeaway you hope to impart to viewers? Recently, I’ve felt the need to de-stress. As I wonder if other people could use the same, I’ve sought to convey a sense of calm and space—to give the conscious mind a break, even if only for a few seconds.

“URSULA VON RYDINGSVARD: THE CONTOUR OF FEELING” This spring, the Denver Botanic Gardens celebrates the debut of its new Freyer-Newman Center, designed by Davis Partnership Architects, with an inaugural exhibition featuring the works of influential sculptor Ursula von Rydingsvard. On view through September 20, “Ursula von Rydingsvard: The Contour of Feeling” features a collection of sculptures and works on paper, including the towering, carved-cedar monoliths for which von Rydingsvard is known. Equally intriguing is a collection of small objects—strands of hair, bits of wood—that the artist has collected over the years to build her visual language. Abstract works on handmade linen paper demonstrate how she incorporates such treasures into the paper itself, giving viewers a look at the path from inspiration to artwork. botanicgardens.org

ASHLEY JOON ▲ Amid Denver’s array of colorful, powerful and often politically charged murals, self-taught painter Ashley Joon’s work is almost startlingly soft and sensual. Featuring tangles of showy blooms, her compositions seem charged with a lyrical energy that stems from Joon’s unique process. “I paint with a balance of instinctual movement and subtle observations,” she says. “I dance as I paint, using the rhythm of music to guide my brush while pulling imagery from my imagination, photography and live flowers.” Her feminine, abstract-impressionistic style has resonated with a variety of clients around town, including the Infinite Monkey Theorem, the Ramble Hotel and the Denver Art Museum, which recently commissioned Joon to create a mural celebrating the exhibition “Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature.” And when designers come calling for custom murals in residential spaces, Joon will be ready. “I could see floral murals looking fabulous in just about every room in the house,” she says. ashleyjoon.com
When Sandra Fettingis examines an object, her eye instinctively seeks out the lines that create the form. “I find the line extremely elegant and harmonious,” the artist says. So when she begins the process of designing a new repetitive pattern—a signature element of her graphic, sitespecific murals—it’s only natural that she takes visual cues from her backdrop’s unique lines: the shape of the wall, the surrounding architecture, even the sky. Minimal color palettes—typically comprising just three or four hues that pop against a high-contrast background—emphasize the elegance of Fettingis’ deceptively simple patterns while nodding to the structures they adorn, from an alley wall at Dairy Block to the interior of the Norwegian Bliss cruise ship. “It’s essential to me that a design fits seamlessly into a site,” Fettingis says, “so that the final work and its surroundings become complementary ‘friends,’ so to speak.” sfettingis.com

ANNA CHARNEY ▲ Years ago, when Denver native Anna Charney was in art school, something caught her eye: the tiny halftone dots which, when viewed from a distance, create the illusion of continuous lines and shapes. So Charney, a painter at heart, began incorporating magnified halftone patterns in her compositions. Though the majority of her “super-creative decision-making” for her current work—large-scale canvases, murals and installations featuring swirls of those enlarged dot patterns—is done on a computer, translating an image to a wall gives Charney the opportunity to reveal signs of the human hand. “I think the magic in painting is seeing the artist’s energy that was put into it,” she says. While the owners of this Cemetery Lane home loved their location, they longed for a modern update. Raymond and her team were happy to oblige, giving exterior and interior alike a total overhaul. In the living space, the wood ceiling was covered and the timbers wrapped. A new gas fireplace was installed and the existing angled wall was straightened to 90 degrees, which added almost 2 full feet of space to the room. New insulation and windows made it more energyefficient, too. The kitchen was moved from the center of the home to an exterior wall, where its placement makes indoor-outdoor entertaining a breeze. Large windows frame mountain views and flood the kitchen and its adjoining dining room with light.

Built in 1820 for a merchant, and soon after purchased by Governor William Aiken Jr., whose family owned the home for 142 years, the Aiken-Rhett house offers a glimpse into antebellum and post-war life in Charleston. Now under the stewardship of the Historic Charleston Foundation, the organization is dedicated to sharing the stories of the enslaved men, women and children who maintained the estate, while also showcasing furniture, architecture and finishes from the mid-19th century.

BEAUPORT, THE SLEEPER-MCCANN HOUSE, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The provenance of the Sleeper-McCann House reads like a rich design novel. Henry Davis Sleeper, one of America’s first professional interior designers, built his summer retreat along the New England shore in 1907. He filled its rooms with a masterful mix, ranging from hand-painted 18th-century Chinese wallpaper to salvaged kitchen doors from his mother’s family’s home. After his death, Helena Woolworth McCann, a fellow collector, purchased the residence and kept much of the design vignettes intact.

Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design his first Los Angeles project—Hollyhock House. Named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower, the floral motif can be found throughout the home. Completed in 1921, it is an early example of Mayan Revival style. In 2015, the estate reopened after a $4.3 million restoration, and in 2019, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the first modern architectural cultural site in the United States to earn the accolade.

Just south of downtown Miami overlooking Biscayne Bay stands the otherworldly Vizcaya estate. Owner and businessman James Deering envisioned the 1920s property as a modern and subtropical interpretation of 18th-century Italian villas. Despite its historical inspiration, the waterfront estate was constructed with modern techniques and technology for the time. Inside, old and new influences merge, such as Baroque and Renaissance antiques paired with works by contemporary artists.

Move over white. Brown is back—think upholstered textiles, painted living room walls and, specifically, kitchens and baths with rich wood elements. While some may flash back to the paneled kitchens of the 1970s, today’s modern interpretation offers warmth and honors the material’s rich hues and patterning. Certain woods, such as walnut, have a beautiful depth to them that can easily cross boundaries between contemporary and traditional design. As shown here, it really shines when paired with other textures and tones.

Deborah Van Plew, design director for Court Atkins Group, offers a different perspective on the coastal kitchen for a vacation home in Bluff ton, South Carolina. While still light and bright, the design nixed a traditional white color scheme in favor of beautiful walnut surfaces and dynamic stone accents. courtatkins.com
What elements did you start with? The owner loves green, so the Blue Tides marble appealed to her right off the bat. We started with this material using it on the waterfall island and the full-height backsplashes. From there, the walnut cabinetry offered a warm, organic factor providing just the right complement to the busy stone. The wood really enhances its beautiful green tones. The design is so seamless. There are a lot of intersecting lines here. Instead of hardware, we went for a clean, streamlined aesthetic, but that meant there was no wiggle room for elements to
be off by an inch or two; everything had to align perfectly. We also thought about scale. It was important to carry vertical surfaces like the wood cabinetry to the ceiling for everything to feel integrated and connected. Where are the appliances? The kitchen faces a large great room. I didn’t want anyone to feel as though they were constantly looking into a kitchen but rather just another living area, so we created a galley behind the range. That’s where we tucked all the things you really have to use on a daily basis, including several appliances.

CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK In the nearly 30 years since Christopher Peacock founded his eponymous luxury cabinetry company, he’s seen kitchen trends come and go, but wellmade, straightforward designs will always stand the test of time. For one of his latest projects, the king of quality kitchens walks us through how he
approaches putting together the home’s hardestworking room. peacockhome.com Where do you begin when designing a kitchen? For me, I usually start the process before I’m even inside the space. It’s important to be aware of the detailing, materials and arrangement of the rest of the home so the kitchen design is both cohesive and a natural progression. A big mistake is thinking of this room in a vacuum. Walk us through your approach to the materials. The dramatic stone was the first thing I picked out. I considered it as a piece of art in guiding the rest of the scheme. For example,
the gray and blue cabinetry colors were pulled right from the veining. Walnut has been around for a long time but there’s something about this particular wood that I just love. It brings such depth to a design and can simultaneously feel both modern and traditional. How have kitchens evolved? Today, these rooms are not considered separate spaces. Instead, they often open up to living areas, particularly in cities and urbans developments. Because of this fluidity, I wanted the elements in this kitchen to read almost like furniture: The island, oven and wall cabinetry all become decorative pieces incorporating different materials and colors.

In a Houston home, designer Marie Flanigan renovated and reinvented the master bathroom to create a statement space with stunning architectural details. Since the original bath was very dark, the first step was to brighten the room and welcome in natural light. To avoid altering the envelope of the building, she implemented a solarium ceiling allowing sunlight to flood the area during the day through solar tubes on the roof. Additional lighting was also added for a soft glow at night. marieflanigan.com
For bathrooms, especially, Flanigan recommends addressing functionality from the very beginning to ensure space is utilized in the best possible way and appliances or fittings are positioned in areas that flow easily. Although the footprint of this room was not changed, so many more usable areas were added including the vanity, bathtub and kitchenette nook. After the technical, ‘macro’ aspects of the design are decided, Flanigan says she turns to micro details like color, texture and materials. Paneled marble walls create an elegant, subtle focal point and were designed to encase the mirrors and sconces. While green stone slabs were the first-round pick, Flanigan and the client eventually decided on honed Calacatta Bettogli, an elevated and refined option. Walnut elements and unlacquered brass finishes, including wood inserts on the Samuel Heath sink fittings, were also introduced to add warmth and comfort to the bathroom. “Natural tones will never go out of style,” says Flanigan.

If the view to the courtyard is any indication, a stay in the premier guest room of architect Bobby McAlpine promises to be a singular experience. Located on the lower level of his Atlanta home, the dramatic chamber is flanked on either side by sunken gardens enjoyed via ocular pivoting sash windows fabricated by DQ Ironworks. Aiding in the luminous feel despite its subterranean siting, white plaster walls, ceilings and floors host furnishings of exaggerated scale, such as the 12-foot-long Niermann Weeks table topped with antique French urns. “It was most important to make this room one you’d never forget,” says McAlpine. mcalpinehouse.com

In the hilltop San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Malcolm Davis Architecture set about pouring daylight into a historic townhome without sacrificing privacy. Rather than punching windows through its side walls, which would have yielded undesirable views, Davis imagined a long, slim skylight punctuated by the building’s freshly exposed wood framing. Notes the architect, “This is such a captivating element because it’s a moment where a modern insertion expresses the original ‘old bones’ of the house. The skylight creates a feeling of warmth and a connection to the outdoors where you wouldn’t expect it.” mdarch.net
Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell were working as architects in Los Angeles when a notion struck: Indoor/outdoor furniture options to their tastes were dispiritingly limited. The duo spent the next year learning to weld and soon after, LAUN, their kicky outdoor furniture line, was born. For a home on Miami’s Venetian Islands, Strang principal Alexandra Mangimelli drew inspiration from the strong horizontal lines and deep overhangs of modernist architect Alfred Browning Parker, devising a structure she describes as both “rhythmic and purposeful.” To usher the home’s exterior strength into the sleek interiors, the architect opted for a custom black pivot door of imposing scale. Whether closed or open to 180 degrees, the immersive portal erases the divide between indoor and out, connecting the homeowners and their guests with the interior courtyard, sculptural cistern, and beyond, the waters of Biscayne Bay. strang.design
6 FANCY FRIEZE Plaster has transcended its traditional roots of late, lending gravitas to contemporary, even modern interiors. “We’ve seen a notable upswing of interest in sculptural relief, both figurative and abstract,” says Adrian Taylor, principal of Hyde Park Mouldings, the Long Island studio specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of artisanal plasterwork. “It seems people are realizing anew that the marriage of architecture and sculpture can yield sublime results,” he adds. After researching vintage and international public libraries, a bibliophilic couple presented Stuart Silk Architects with an unusual ask for their Issaquah, Washington, lake house: a doublestory library. Enamored with the brief, plans were drawn for a dramatic slate-toned sanctuary with dark herringbone floors. Prior to designer Mary Frances Young’s arrival, a Manhattan apartment’s crowning feature—namely, a plastered brick, barrel-vaulted ceiling—was shrouded by dark building materials and furnishings. Allowing the architectural envelope to take center stage, Young painted the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Paperwhite and paneled the floors in crisp white oak topped with a custom Amadi carpet, setting the stage for her airy take on the 19th-century parlor. “The building is a historical ice storage facility with wide hallways and big spaces. Before she was an award-winning interior designer, Akasha Feeley was highly successful in the creation of clothes, rather than spaces. After attending Parsons School of Design and spending years in fashion, she decided it was time to make a shift. And so, Akasha Design Studio was born. The master style maker, as one could certainly call her, now outfits high-end residences, often in the form of renovations. Fittingly, given her background, one of her more unique requests was for a luxurious closet. “It was almost more like a girl cave,” she enthuses. “We had areas for plush seating, a vanity/makeup table and places to display favorite photos, art and collectibles.” Feeley also designed a U-shaped rod that hung from the ceiling, giving the space a much more open, and totally chic, feel. It’s just one example of the inventive, “fashion-forward” thinking she and her team bring to every project. As she says, “I am good at visualizing, and I love to walk in and start creating.”

ichael Leede and his sister, designer Katie Leede, spent many summers in a special family house on the coast of Maine called Skylands. Years later, when Michael asked his sister to help design a Denver house for his family, the siblings had that particular home in mind. Today, the world knows Skylands as one of Martha Stewart’s oft-published residences, but it was originally designed in the 1920s by architect Duncan Candler for Edsel and Eleanor Ford. And, for many years, it was a haven for the Leede family. “It was our magical place,” Katie says. “We had it for close to 20 summers, and we loved the flow and feeling of that house, and the quality of its materials.” Michael adds, “It had wellproportioned rooms, but nothing overly grand—it’s a very livable, classic design.” To recreate the feeling of Skylands while also drawing inspiration from Katie’s former Santa Monica home, Michael asked architect Mark Wellen (who worked on the Maine house when the Leede family owned it), the late general contractor Mike Floyd of Kane Creek Construction and his sister to create the new residence. The design team was charged with capturing the spirit of the homes, as opposed to replicating them. Wellen chose to keep the plan clear and simple by using a strong axial arrangement. “There’s a certain amount of drama when you walk through the front door and into the high-ceiling space,” he says. “Then, as you go into the living room, the axis creates views in all directions.” The architect also gave the brand-new house a sense of gravitas with elements found in classic homes, such as thick walls that allow inset windows and doors. “We tried to make the detailing basic and timeless,” he says. “I’m a strong believer that a house should be the framework for the way people live their lives. The details of this house are a great backdrop for the family’s furniture and art.”

It is a considerable collection, as the home contains not only family memories, but many physical keepsakes as well. Michael and Katie’s mother—a woman with a discerning eye for design—happened to be creating a more contemporary interior at her house while her son’s new home was being designed, so she gave many of her vintage pieces to him and her daughter-in-law, Teresa. “My mom had gotten several wonderful old pieces from Hyde Park Antiques when I was 15—including the entry console and mirror,” the designer says. “After that, she went on a big collecting tear. When all of these beautiful things became available, it was just a matter of figuring out what could go where.”

Katie had more than antiques to consider—their mother provided a healthy dose of modern furniture as well as the classic items. And it’s the mix that provides the home with soulfulness. The dining room, for example, features Brno dining chairs by Mies van der Rohe. “Those are the type of chairs that we grew up with around our dining room table,” says Katie. That’s not to say they are exactly the same. The designer notes: “I put an olive brown linen velvet on these, which my mother would never do, she always had them with the classic black leather.” The room also contains statement-making contemporary notes. “The Jasper Johns Numbers were collected by my parents, and they look great in the dining room against the

A gold-leaf ceiling floats above it all. “We had a painter on a ladder for four days, applying these little gilt squares to the ceiling,” Teresa says. “It adds a special pop and a bit of chic.” Throughout, textiles add color and texture. Fabrics by designers such as Brigitte Singh and Robert Kime mix with the designer’s own line, as well as family heirlooms. “There’s an antique tapestry in the entry that was the first major piece my mom bought,” Katie says. “It was a centerpiece of Michael and Teresa’s wedding.” And, in 2019, it served the same function when the couple’s son married. Meanwhile, a family quilt hangs on the bedroom wall. “My mother is an avid collector, and while at Skylands she became obsessed with quilts,” Katie says. “She accumulated around 200, and this one is a particular favorite of my mother’s.” The myriad of family treasures looks right at home in the airy yet intimate spaces. “This house feels solid yet cozy—and that’s the way Skylands was,” says the designer. And now the house is ready for the next generation of Leedes. “We wanted a house that was comfortable for our family,” says Teresa. “Our son and his wife are expecting a baby this summer, so as our family grows this house will be able to accommodate all of us. It’s a great place for making memories.”

f you happened to be waiting in line by yourself for the ski lift on the Vail slopes in the early 1980s, you were obligated to yell out, “Single!” A little embarrassing, yes, but for the owners of this house the practice resulted in becoming a couple. “I yelled out ‘Single!’ and these two guys turned around and said, ‘Come on up!’ ” the now wife recalls. “So, I went up and we skied together for the rest of the day, and that’s how I met my husband—a cheesy lift line pickup!” Needless to say, the Vail region has held a place in the couple’s hearts ever since. In 2001, they purchased the secondary side of a duplex overlooking Gore Creek, a tributary that runs toward Vail Valley. But as their family grew, space began to feel tight, so when the owners of the duplex’s primary townhouse decided to sell, the couple snapped it up for themselves. It took the owners a good six months to decide whether to combine the two townhomes into one house or tear it down and build a single-family dwelling from the ground up. Eventually, they chose to start from scratch and build a new five-bedroom house with a rustic-modern ambience that capitalizes on the spectacular views.

Regular entertainers, the owners wanted an open-plan, one-level living space and as much outdoor usable space as possible for summertime gatherings. Large glass walls open up onto a deck that wraps from the home’s north side to the west side dining and lounge area with a fire pit. Inside, the living, dining and kitchen areas flow together in one organic space that opens up to the decks. “We had the opportunity to really take advantage of the views of the creek and the mountains around the house,” architect Kyle Webb explains. “They gravitated to a kind of traditional great room idea, but they also wanted a home that brings the outdoors in. We settled on something that you could call a modern glass house with a rustic flair.” The secret to that aesthetic lies in the materials. Webb worked with general contractor Ted Leach on a combination of stone veneer, stucco, reclaimed barn wood and steel accents to tie it all together. The furnishings are a similar

material mix. “The couple was looking for modern but not over-the-top,” designer Dana Hugo says. “They wanted a rustic mountain feel with a little bit of industrial flair, so I knew it would be about textures. At one point we realized we had enough metal and wood, so we softened it with the fabrics, pillows and throws.” To bring warmth to the neutral, modern spaces, Hugo brought in specific accent colors for each room. Alongside the purple chairs, pillows and throws for the great room space, she also used a creative interpretation of the hue for the pantry door—a black and white print of beets by a local artist in Denver. Downstairs in the media room, blue and orange accents complement wallpaper with an industrial tanker print. The wallcovering appears so real, Hugo says, that guests find it temptingly tactile. “People automatically go in there and touch the walls thinking that it’s really metal flaking off the wall.”
Thanks to floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, to sit in the openplan living and dining room is to be surrounded by views of the forested landscape. The scenery inside includes a rift-sawn white oak and steel coffee table by Summit Woodworks and a New Moon rug with a bespoke ombré pattern.

The home’s modern-industrial feel is embodied in the kitchen. Wood panels covering the refrigerator and composing the cabinets are treated with a finish that mimics steel and complements the range hood, all of which are by Genesis Hospitality Corporation. Rustic finishes are found in the island, which is crafted with a leathered Calacatta Fendi countertop and reclaimed barn wood. Giada, the family’s golden retriever, seems to appreciate the look.
Hugo continued the modern-industrial theme with lighting in the dining room and kitchen, as well as an operable steel dining table cranked up just above the 36-inch countertop level. “I think it weighed about 1,200 pounds and it took about eight guys to get in there,” Hugo laughs. Outside, the cultivated garden and expansive yard by landscape designer James Fitz provides a gentle natural contrast to the more rugged expanse of aspen, spruce and pine trees of the surrounding terrain. “I’ve never gotten tired of the view here. To wake up in the morning and look down the creek—I love it,” the wife says. “During winter, it’s beautiful and snow covered, and as everything melts in the summer, it becomes like a raging river by June and sounds like we’re living beside the ocean.” That’s just one of the scenes the largely glass house allows the couple to view. “We’ve seen quite a few bears and foxes over the years, and last year we had an eagle that was roosting down the creek from us,” the wife says. “But I have never seen a mountain lion—and I’m not unhappy about that!” But the scene from the windows that is the most sentimental is not fauna, it’s the mountain face where they met nearly 40 years ago. As the wife says, “We still giggle about it when we use that lift.”

rom Buffalo Bill’s roadshow spectacular to John Ford’s Technicolor Wild West films, the cowboy looms large in this country’s imagination. The original American idol finds new swagger in the works of Denver-based painter Duke Beardsley. Tearing the familiar icon down to the studs, the artist lets his modern-day cowboys and cowgirls run amok among Pop art neon colors. As a sixth-generation Coloradoan, the artist has embodied the cowboy’s life since he was old enough to sit on a horse, spending his childhood working on his family’s cattle ranch in the southeast corner of Douglas County. “From a very young age, I remember some cold mornings on horseback being told to keep up,” jokes Beardsley. These dawn patrol memories endured when he left for California to study at the ArtCenter College of Design, as wranglers and stallions claimed their territory on his canvas. “In art school, you’re exposed to many styles,” he recalls. “But someone told me, ‘you already know what you want to do. I bet every time you close your eyes, that’s what you see.’ That was a wake-up call.” Growing up, Beardsley loved the classics. “I looked up to Western art greats like Charles Marion Russell and Frederic Remington with this overwhelmed boy’s imagination.” His own work teases that nostalgia, disrupting sentimentalism with a Pop art vocabulary of color and pattern. His signature vivid hues lend a hyperreal atmosphere to his graphic, hard-edge silhouette portraits. The figures become more surreal in his line-up series, where he repeats that seminal outline of horse and rider into a checkerboard motif, until each figure blurs into expressionism. “I like when a Western art devotee comes to me and says, ‘Man, I love the way you paint real cowboys, but why did you paint them turquoise?’ I like challenging the icon.” Though playful, Beardsley’s process begins with old-fashioned grit, as “I’m drawn to modern-day working cowboys and cowgirls.” For inspiration, he rides with ranching family and friends across the West, sketching ideas or shooting photos or video “because you can’t ask these people to stop and hold a pose.” In between sketches, they don’t hesitate to put him to work. “I ride and rope, so I help out where I can.” In the studio, Beardsley reviews the images, sketching out the most compelling gestures and features of both horse and rider. He then draws the composition in charcoal on massive canvases and adds dimension with layers of watery grayscale acrylics. Color comes more spontaneously with vibrant oil paints, “though I endeavor as best as I can to get these bright hues to behave themselves.” Behaving colors or not, it’s clear cowboy culture remains ripe for dialogue. Says Beardsley, “The icon can take a lot, and I am throwing a lot at it.”

kiing, snowshoeing, cycling, hiking and mountain biking—these are not necessarily the kind of outdoor activities you expect of every cosmopolitan Manhattan dweller. And yet it is all of those pastimes that repeatedly lured one New York-based couple and their three grown children to Aspen, making the mountain town, in the words of the wife, “our favorite place to go, both in winter and in summer.” After vacationing there for years, the couple decided to purchase a house in the area that would serve as a gathering place for family and friends. Their search for a home base ended in nearby Snowmass, where they found a 1990s-era house that boasted breathtaking views. “The house is located on a mountain with 360-degree views, which wowed us,” says the wife, adding that “there is a magical, treehouse quality to it.” Another enticement was the fact that the house is situated near hiking and skiing trails, which can be accessed by simply walking or (in the winter) skiing out the front door. What was not so appealing, however, was the home’s dark, heavy interiors. A cumbersome log staircase, antler chandeliers and a lava-rock fireplace surround were just some of the mountain-house design tropes that the homeowners were anxious to be rid of, prompting what ultimately became a gut interior renovation. Design-savvy and appreciative of both traditional and contemporary styles, the couple envisioned a house that was comfortable yet modern and filled with art—in other words, a mountain house that defies expectations, much like the outdoorsy urbanites themselves. Seeking a local design team that could address architecture and interiors cohesively, the homeowners chose Aspen-based interior designer Barbara Glass Mullen and residential designer Richard Mullen. After having seen their work online, “I understood implicitly that Richard loves modern while Barbara veers more traditional,”

says the wife, who considered their unique points of view an advantage. “We got the benefit of two people who understood each other professionally and respected each other aesthetically,” she explains. The first order of business was to reshape the interior. The first floor was so chopped up with awkwardly positioned rooms that detours were often required to get from one space to the next. Plus, the kitchen felt cramped and closed-off, which was frustrating for a family who loves to cook and entertain. Working within the home’s existing footprint, Mullen improved the interior flow by opening up the first floor and positioning the kitchen in a central location, between a dining room on one side and the living room on the other. “I floated the kitchen in the middle, so that you can see the entire space in one glance,” explains the Mullen, who was aided in his efforts by general contractor Craig Barnes. “It makes the space feel contiguous.” According to the wife, it also makes for an amazing kitchen, and she notes that she now has room to cook alongside family and friends. When it came to detailing the interiors, Glass Mullen avoided the expected mountain house clichés, such as dark woods, and instead strove for a clean, sophisticated setting that would provide an appropriate backdrop for another interest of the homeowners: their burgeoning collection of contemporary paintings and sculpture. To allow the art to really shine, the design duo conceived an interior envelope of white oak floors and paneling married with white plaster walls—a sleek combination of materials which perhaps looks its most striking in the reimagined staircase. Spanning three floors and casting filtered light from the top to the bottom of the house thanks to a wood-screened window and open stair treads, Mullen’s remarkably streamlined design has been likened to a work of art by the homeowners. “The entire house was designed around this staircase,” he says. As pared down and edited as the background became, the sense of hominess that is the mark of all good mountain houses was never compromised. Like its surroundings, the home’s furniture is sleek and, at times, sculptural, but also inviting and comfortable. The same can be said of the fabrics that soften the clean-lined interiors. “For a mountain house, texture means cozy,” explains Glass Mullen, who upholstered furniture in tactile fabrics, such as wool, mohair and alpaca, which had the added benefit of warming up the home’s cool color palette. Stylishly edited yet warm and relaxing, this Colorado mountain house now suits the homeowners to a T. “A house should reflect a person’s aesthetic vision and be beautiful and comfortable at the same time,” says the wife, who finally has the family gathering spot that she and her husband had hoped for.
