1 Omega Constellation Limited Edition 1952 Sedna Omega’s Constellation Sedna uses the brand’s new Sedna alloy—a mixture of gold, copper and palladium—which was designed to resist fading. 2 Bell & Ross Vintage WW1 Régulateur With its Vintage WW1 Régulateur, Bell & Ross shows just how iconic pink gold can be. This timepiece showcases a very traditional regulator display—regulator clocks were once used by watchmakers to regulate and set timepieces—on which the minutes take precedence over the hours. Bell & Ross has limited the Régulateur to 99 pieces worldwide.

3 Hautlence Destination 01 Hautlence uses 5N red gold plating in its new Destination 01, a moderately priced line (for Hautlence) that retains the brand’s signature innovative time displays. Coupled with black, the red gold makes a striking statement.

This year’s BaselWorld, the watch world’s largest showcase, had observers throughout the industry seeing red—literally. Red, rose and pink gold were ubiquitous.

Red tints in gold come from the presence of copper in the alloy; the more copper, the redder the gold. And while no one in the business can say precisely why reddish gold seems to have eclipsed yellow gold, many are glad for it. Pairing reddish gold with a brown dial and/or strap gives a timepiece a warm, elegant look. With a black case, reddish gold looks technical and sporty but still sophisticated. As the above watches show, it’s a look that works for both men and women, and one that's on its way to becoming classic in its own right.

The gimlet is enjoying a boomlet. Here are four outstanding gins contributing to the resurgence of a muchmisunderstood spirit. ▼

1 Hendrick’s This spirit has become widely known for its unusual flavor profile, largely derived from infusions of cucumber and rose-petal essences.

Hendrick’s is distilled by the sixth generation of familyowned company William Grant & Sons in the Scottish seaside village of Girvan, Ayrshire. William Grant uses 11 botanicals that range from coriander seeds—yielding notes of ginger, citrus and sage—to sweet, musky angelica root.

Todd Hardie, owner of Caledonia Spirits & Winery in Vermont, stumbled into the spirits trade after more than 40 years as a beekeeper. He incorporates his raw, organic honey into Caledonia’s craft spirits (they also make vodka and elderberry cordial).

Barr Hill Gin is largely characterized by juniper—the only botanical used during the primary distillation—which is then made more complex with the infusion of honey during a second distillation.

3 Hayman’s Old Tom Old Tom’s distinctive flavor profile—a subtle sweetness, a hint of citrus—sets it apart from any other gin. And its growing popularity among in-the-know mixologists and cocktail enthusiasts marks a revival of sorts: Old Tom was the gin of choice in 19th-century England. These days, Old Tom is becoming the go-to option for classic cocktails such as the Tom Collins, Martinez and gin fizz.

4 Nolet’s Reserve The quintessential “sipping gin,” Nolet’s Reserve is the Holy Grail for serious gin drinkers. Each batch is distilled and bottled at the family-owned company’s distillery in Schiedam, the Netherlands, according to a recipe crafted by 10thgeneration owner Carolus Nolet Sr., who is probably best known for producing Ketel One vodka. The gin’s intense flavor is marked by hints of saffron.

What: BOCA DO LOBO EDEN B R A S S TA B L E

Design that starts with nature, then gives it a modern twist. ▼

Boca do Lobo translates from the Portuguese to “wolf’s mouth,” but for the eight-yearold company that took the term as its name, the phrase refers to the use of traditional techniques to create modern furniture. Weighing 260 pounds, this Eden Brass table is handcrafted by artisans in Boca do Lobo’s studios in Rio Tinto, Portugal. The craftsmen pour heated metal into molds that mimic the patterns of the Portuguese oak tree. After the metal has set, the artisans release the table and weld the centerpiece to the outer piece.

When that’s done, they varnish and polish the table by hand. All told, the process takes three to four months.

A Los Angeles-based designer marries the old and the new. ▼

Alison Berger, a Los Angeles-based artist and designer, uses traditional glassblowing techniques to create pieces that capture light in a distinctive manner. Drawing inspiration from utilitarian forms such as a fourth century Roman wedding goblet and a secret society chalice from 15th century Spain, Berger strips objects down to their essence, resulting in items that feel both antique and modern.

Her new collection of furniture and lighting, including the light above, is crafted mostly from glass. “This fixture is poured vertically to create the appearance of chilled marks, or feathering, on the surface,” says Berger. “The trough has a slightly depressed surface to receive the hardware as if the glass is melting around the metal.” Berger recently became the first American artist ever commissioned by Hermès to create a line of objects, which included everything from salt and pepper cellars to a horse bridle.

Luxury and economy have rarely gone hand in fuel-pumping hand. But a fresh crop of diesel-powered cars is proving that hybrids aren’t the only path to high mileage. Powerful, quiet and clean enough to meet California’s stringent pollution rules, these models prove what European buyers have long known: Diesels may be the smartest way to blend performance with environmental friendliness.

1 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel Modern families are seeking ways to haul their stuff without guzzling fuel. At an EPA-rated 21/28 mpg for 4x4 models, the diesel Grand Cherokee fits the bill. Its mileage compares to just 14/20 mpg for the Hemi V-8 version, and the 17/24 mpg that comes with a gasoline V-6. In tandem with an excellent eight-speed automatic transmission, the 3.0liter turbodiesel V-6 pumps out 240 horsepower, which pushes it to 60 mph in fewer than eight seconds—impressive for a car this size. The top-shelf Summit edition offers a “gliding air” suspension, generous leather, touch-screen infotainment and even a WiFi connection.

2 Audi A7 TDI The standard A7—a hatchback disguised as a shapely sedan— already resembles a mobile sculpture. But the TDI version adds another angle: an EPAestimated 24/38 mpg from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder clean diesel engine with 240 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. 3 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTec 4Matic Not so long ago, the idea of a four-cylinder engine in a Mercedes would have seemed like a joke. No one’s laughing now: A new 2.1-liter turbodiesel—the first four-cylinder Mercedes diesel in nearly three decades—spurs the slick-driving GLK250 crossover to 33 mpg on the highway. That compares with a mere 24 mpg for the V-6, gaspowered GLK350 version. The gas-slurping GLK-Class is faster, but with 200 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, the diesel model still scoots from 0 to 60 mph in a quite acceptable 7.9 seconds.

What: HASSELBLAD’S LUNAR COLLECTION

A camera company known for technical excellence launches a user-friendly digital line. ▼

Elegance Hasselblad assembles its cameras by hand at its design center in Treviso, Italy, an area known for supplying raw materials to luxury-goods companies. Distinguished by materials such as mahogany, olive wood, carbon fiber and leather, these cameras look as beautiful as the pictures they take.

Strength The well-calibrated body elegantly supports its interchangeable DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) lenses.

In 1940, the Swedish government commissioned photographer and businessman Victor Hasselblad to reengineer a spy camera from a downed German surveillance plane. The result was the first Hasselblad camera, called the HK7. In the following years, Hasselblad founded his own company, producing cameras for the Swedish military and then, after the war, expanding into cameras for professional and amateur photographers. Hasselblad, who died in 1978, also created the cameras NASA used on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission to the moon. A nod to that historic collaboration, the company’s new Lunar Collection, created in partnership with Sony, is Hasselblad’s first digital camera targeted at both professional photographers and serious amateurs.

At 145 feet long , Pendennis’ Hemisphere is the largest sailing catamaran ever built. Its mast ascends to 190 feet, but the lines run internally and without spreaders, keeping the decks and rig uncluttered.

Passengers enter the yacht through motion-activated sliding doors that open to a 1,076-square-foot, split-level lounge. Inside, the English boatbuilder used oak, onyx and wenge, a dark-colored wood from Africa, throughout; 18 different leathers and 15 types of stone create distinct looks for each cabin.

Available for charter in French Polynesia, the Hemisphere is outfitted with water-sports equipment including water skis, windsurfers and a 27-foot tender.
