Eco-friendly resorts offering a luxury experience of rural China.â–ź
Yearning for a profound outdoor quiet, South African entrepreneur Grant Horsfield and his architect wife, Delphine Yip, in 2007 discovered the tranquility of Moganshan, a mountain peak outside of Shanghai once frequented by expats wishing to escape the city’s heat. Below Moganshan, Horsfield came across a small farming community with numerous farmhouses in disrepair. Seeing an opportunity, he convinced the village authorities to let him rent and renovate the structures. Eight farmhouses became the Naked Retreats Home Village, the first properties under the Naked brand. In 2011 Horsfield and Yip expanded with the adjoining Naked Stables Private Reserve. Designed to prioritize sustainability, Naked Stables was named China’s first Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) luxury resort earlier this year. Each room is fitted with a meter to track energy consumption, and guests are rewarded with incentives for less than standard usage.
[µ]
Calm From the views out of the bedrooms (top) to Kikabini Restaurant, located on a lake (left), to the stables at Naked Stables Private Reserve (above), Naked resorts are designed to bring peace of mind to their visitors.

Distinctive The Reserve features freestanding treetop villas and earthen huts (far left), four swimming pools, an equestrian center, a spa and wellness center and three restaurants. It sits on its own 60acre private valley, enclosed by bamboo and tea plantations, a reservoir and farming villages (aerial view on left).

This group leaves the workhorse family cars of old in the dust. ▼
The words “family car” conjure images of wood-paneled wagons, bland minivans and other dutiful transport. But, particularly in the luxury realm, the family car is getting a serious upgrade, with sleek designs, lavish features and potent engines. These models don’t shirk their responsibilities: Safety, allwheel-drive and fuel economy are also part of the portfolio. Ferry the kids in one of these family friends, and you may even look forward to carpooling. 1 Audi A8 and S8 Shy of, say, a Bentley Flying Spur, the A8—whose AWD system, onboard navigation and WiFi, optional W12 engine and other technologies underpin the Bentley— may be the new emperor of plus-size sedans. Audi Connect links up to eight external devices to the internet, perfect for road trips when singalongs have lost their luster. And the S8 amasses 520 V-8, twin-turbo horses, blasting from 0 to 60 mph in a slightly ridiculous 3.8 seconds. Base price: $72,995 to $135,395 Contact: 800.367.2834, audiusa.com

Details The interior is a designer atelier of wood, metal, leather and graphical displays, including Google Earth-based navigation.
The second-generation Cayenne beckons the family into the world of Porsche performance. In a fivepassenger SUV that delivers more pure-handling excitement than any rival, that world spins as quickly as you want it to. Yet practicality is stressed with sculpted backseats and navigation and audio systems that no longer seem like afterthoughts. Seven handsome versions range from the fuel-sipping, affordable V-6 and diesel models—the latter achieving 30 highway mpg during our testing—to six-figure warp-speeders like the 550-horsepower Turbo S. Base price: $50,575 to $146,975 Contact: 800.767.7243, porsche.com/usa
3 Mercedes GL-Class Already the best three-row, sevenpassenger SUV in the game, the sumptuous GL is fully redesigned for 2013. This big Benz can venture offroad, parallel park itself, automatically keep pace with traffic, detect sleepy drivers or potential collisions and stow its third row at the touch of a button. A GL350 diesel model combines a whopping 455 pound-feet of torque with 26-mpg highway economy. For profligate types, the GL63 AMG pumps out 550 horsepower from a 5.5-liter, bi-turbo V-8. Base price: $63,305 to $117,830 Contact: 800.367.6372, mbusa.com
4 Volvo XC60 Few crossovers, at any price, do so many things as well as the XC60. The wedge-shaped Swede is seductive and minimalist in style. With seats offering near-orthopedic support, it’s soothingly comfortable. The XC60 is also surprisingly fleet— especially in its 325-horsepower, T6 AWD guise—but doesn’t subject innocent passengers to a harsh ride. Naturally, Volvo has safety covered: A groundbreaking pedestrian detection system can automatically stop the XC60 to avoid hitting walkers. 5 Infiniti QX60 The new JX35, which will be renamed the QX60 for 2014, is dedicated to hauling seven people and their stuff in serene comfort. That includes clever second-row seats that tuck and slide with no need to remove child seats, facilitating easy access to the third row. And a new QX60 Hybrid version is expected to deliver an impressive 26 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Base price: $42,245; QX60 Hybrid, $45,500 (est.) Contact: 800.662.6200, infinitiusa.com

[µ] Craftsman Ship J Craft spends more than 4,000 man-hours building a Torpedo to exacting specifications. The mahogany foredeck, for example, is treated with 18 coats of varnish for extended protection from sun and water.
J Craft built its first boat, a Cabrio Cruiser, for the King of Sweden in 1999. That illustrious debut client boosted the Swedish company’s credibility along the French Riviera, and the Gotland shipyard has since developed the J Craft Torpedo. This 42-foot cruiser has an elegantly shaped hull with a pinstriped mahogany foredeck and a cabin that can seat six comfortably. The Torpedo is dressed up with a handmade mahogany Nardi steering wheel (the brand first used on the 1960s Ferrari 250 GTO), as well as Loro Piana fabrics and gleaming stainless-steel fittings. The interior has a master cabin, captain’s cabin, head with shower and a hydraulic table in the salon. With abundant exterior seating and easy access to the water from the stern, the Torpedo is an ideal day boat for families. Beyond the sleek hull and Volvo engines, no two Torpedoes are the same. J Craft customizes the Torpedo’s hull, deck colors and exterior fabrics to each client’s preferences.

Watches are often thought of as heirlooms to be passed from generation to generation. But why wait? Buying a pair of watches, one for you and one for your son or daughter, can create a bond by fueling a shared passion for fine timepieces. Last year, luxury watchmaker IWC introduced the father/son pilot watch set; its larger timepiece is earmarked for the dad and the smaller, simpler watch is for his son. Frédérique Constant recently created a Junior collection designed to introduce better watches to the next generation. Of course, you can configure your own pair of watches—they could share design elements, case shapes, complications and more. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Signature Style Puiforcat is famous for its subtle decorative elements: Note the trapezoid shape at the base of the forged knife blades, the three-pronged forks with the two outer prongs curved slightly inward and the angled openings between prongs.
D. Porthault began life at the turn of the 20th century as a small lingerie boutique in Paris. It didn’t take long for the company’s founder, Daniel, to expand into colorfully designed bed sheets and table linens—a rarity in France at the time, when basic whites were de rigueur. The Coraux line of place mats and napkins, a nod to the company’s whimsical aesthetic tradition, are handembroidered 100 percent linen.
3 Puiforcat Annecy Cutlery Jean E. Puiforcat, the famed European silver craftsman and creative force behind Puiforcat the company, designed the Annecy line of sterling-silver flatware, characterized by its perfect disc at the end of each piece, in 1930. More than 80 years later, the collection still feels remarkably fresh thanks to its smooth, flat handles and a geometric balance between straight and curved lines. Parallel designs for father and son. ▼
For Max Girombelli, head of Duca Sartoria in New York, and his younger brother, Roberto, who runs the Milan atelier, fashion is the family business: Their father and older brother helped to launch some of the most renowned Italian and French designers. In 1993, Max and Roberto branched out on their own to launch Duca Sartoria in Milan. Three years later, Max opened the New York store. Family remains a focus. Max Girombelli recently launched a father and son Same Look program offering two suits or jackets with exactly the same details, fabric, lining and buttons. “My clients can afford anything for their children,” he says, “but this is one thing that they will always remember—their first suit.” Taking a cue from an old Italian tailoring practice, Duca Sartoria leaves the top buttonhole sewn closed in all its jackets to make them easier to hand down—all that’s needed is to lengthen or shorten the sleeves.

What: CIGAR PAIRINGS
Step out of your comfort zone with these unexpected complements to a good smoke. ▼
1 Dry Red Wine Lodi, Calif., is a great place to go for a cigar-friendly wine; the region is known for producing wines that are fruity and bold. Two recommended selections: the Earthquake 2011 Zinfandel and Mettler Family Vineyards 2010 Lodi Petite Sirah, both of which go nicely with an Ashton VSG Illusion. Espresso, white chocolate and raisins line the nose of this robust cigar. The finish is complex and extended with an aftertaste of cardamom, fig and date. The smoke’s dried fruit character matches the spicy Zinfandel well, but be prepared to taste a wine that seems lighter than before. The Petite Sirah, on the other hand, is basically darkfruit ink, and can hold its own beside the rich cigar. Price: cigars: $200 per box of 24; Earthquake 2011 Zinfandel: $25 per 750-milliliter bottle; Mettler Family Vineyards 2010 Lodi Petite Sirah: $25 per 750-milliliter bottle Contact: Ashton Distributors, 800.327.4866, ashtoncigar.com; Michael David Winery (for Earthquake Zinfandel), 209.368.7384, michaeldavidwinery.com; Mettler Family Vineyards, info@mettlerwine.com, 888.509.5969, mettlerwine.com

Bold The Ashton VSG Illusion has an extra-aged Ecuadorian wrapper and a long-aged blend of six Cuban-seed Dominican long fillers, plus an extra-rich Ligero leaf.
2 Dessert Wine (Other Than Port) The Perdomo Grand Cru cigar is marked by its oily, nutty flavor, which brims with dark chocolate and sea salt. It has an all-Cuban-seed (Semilla Habano) wrapper, binder and filler. The cigar plays well against the acidity of dessert wines like the NV R. L. Buller & Son Calliope Rare Muscat from Victoria, Australia, and the 2003 Masi Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Serègo Alighieri Casal dei Ronchi from Verona, Italy. The Perdomo complements the muscat’s caramel and the recioto’s blueberry. Try dipping the mouth end of the cigar in the wine(s) for an entirely different experience. Price: cigars: $180 per box of 24 Grand Robustos; NV R. L. Buller & Son Calliope Rare Muscat: $100 per 375-milliliter bottle; Masi Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Serègo Alighieri Casal dei Ronchi: $71 per 500-milliliter bottle Contact: Tabacalera Perdomo, 888.642.5797, perdomocigars.net; R. 3 Dark Beer Because of beer’s less-robust nature, it is best paired with a milder cigar. In this case, an Illusione Robusta Gorda—with a Nicaraguan wrapper, binder and filler—is an excellent match with either Left Hand Black Jack Porter or Avery Out of Bounds Stout, both from Colorado. The carbonation in the beer helps in tasting the Illusione’s subtler qualities by scrubbing the mouth after each sip (sparkling wine does the same thing). The cigar brings hints of almond, pomegranate and cinnamon alongside black olive and mushroom. It balances the mocha-tinged porter but lasts much longer against the stronger stout’s intense flavors of dark chocolate and orange peel. Price: cigars: $195 per box of 25; Left Hand Black Jack Porter: $9 per six-pack of 12-ounce bottles; Avery Out of Bounds Stout: $8 per six-pack of 12-ounce bottles Contact: Illusione Cigars, illusionecigars.com (password is “illusione”); Left Hand Brewing Co., 303.772.0258, lefthandbrewing.com; Avery Brewing Co., 303.440.4324, averybrewing.com
