1 La Follette 2011 Pinot Noir

2 2011 Continuum

3 Jordan 2012 Chardonnay

4 Fisher Vineyards 2010

Made at a winery established by husband and wife Rick and Diane DuNah in the Russian River Valley in 1998, the La Follette 2011 pinot noir is notable for its deep color and marked flavors of raspberry, wild strawberry and red rose. On the nose: dried lavender and bark.

The current release from this St. Helena estate, owned by Tim Mondavi of the legendary wine family, consists of 75 percent cabernet sauvignon, 12 percent petit verdot, 11 percent cabernet franc and 2 percent merlot. The 2011 growing season was a challenging one for Napa vintners, marked by unusually cold and wet weather, but this wine is one of the survivors.

Jordan Vineyard & Winery, founded in 1976 by Tom Jordan and run today by his son John, is best known for its exceptional reds, but its chardonnay, often mistaken for a white Burgundy, is too often overlooked, given its elegant palate full of vibrant flavors such as stone fruit.

Coach Insignia Cabernet Sauvignon and 2013 Unity Rosé In the 20th century the Fisher family made fine car bodies— known by the ad campaign “body by Fisher”—and it has brought the same passion for craftsmanship to its wines. The Coach Insignia blends cabernet sauvignon and merlot. The rosé: pinot noir, malbec and syrah.

Some 7,000 feet above sea level, in the southern half of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, sits Amangani, an Aman Resort whose guests can take full advantage of the area’s mountains, meadows, sage flats, streams and rivers. The warmer months bring horseback riding, mountain biking, fly fishing, rafting, mountain climbing on Grand Teton, wolf stalking, hot-air ballooning, golfing and tennis. And in the winter—well, it’s no secret that Jackson Hole, with its 2,471 acres of steep but accessible terrain, has some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world. Guests of the resort also have access to the finest equipment available, private mountain guides, guided snowcat powder-skiing trips and heli-skiing outings to untouched slopes. “If the son is old enough, they can go to the Cowboy Bar and sit on the saddles,” says Kay Merrill, a travel agent who recommends the resort.

THE NEW BLACK YOUR JET, YOUR BUSINESS, IN THE BLACK More businesses have invested in Citation jets for their travel needs than any other brand of jet. There’s a reason for that. It’s not just the excellence in craftsmanship, reliability in performance, and time-tested quality in engineering that back every Citation jet. It’s the return on their investment that businesses get when executives arrive at their destinations on time, get back faster, and have the versatility to keep moving. Citation jets help keep businesses in the black. This is aviation authority.

Paris is hardly a unique travel choice, but because the city is so beautiful, it remains an excellent one. The key to an exceptional visit is proper planning. “It’s really about the one-of-a-kind experiences there that create lifetime memories for a parent and child to share,” says Dee Branciforte, VP at Fischer Travel in New York. Branciforte recently planned a trip for a mother and daughter that included a private cooking class with a Michelin-starred chef, a modeling shoot with a world-renowned fashion photographer and a couture dress-fitting with a major clothing designer. The city has many wonderful hotels—the Bristol, Meurice, Crillon, the soon-to-reopen Plaza Athénée and Ritz, among them—but the five-star George V, located just off the ChampsÉlysées, is particularly well suited in style and amenities for mother and daughter bonding. Its vast spa, with its decadent décor fitting a modern-day Marie Antoinette, has an exhaustive menu of luxurious treatments. “New Zealand is perfect for active people—it’s all about hiking, wine-tasting if the daughter is old enough, biking trips, any outdoor activity you can think of,” says Brenda Cadman, international travel advisor with Hurley Travel Experts. A sample itinerary brings father and daughter from Auckland north by helicopter to the Lodge at Kauri Cliffs, which is set on 4,800 acres near Matauri Bay and offers striking views toward Cape Brett and the Cavalli Islands. From there, travelers might helicopter to Waiheke Island for a tour of the area’s wineries, art galleries and a gourmet lunch. Next: the Farm at Cape Kidnappers, a 6,000-acre working sheep and cattle farm perched atop dramatic 800-foot-tall seaside cliffs. A final flight south, to Queenstown, brings visitors to one of the most private and serene locales on the planet, Matakauri Lodge, situated on the edge of Lake Wakatipu.

The Ranch at Live Oak is a 16-cottage refuge three miles above the Pacific in the Santa Monica Mountains. The property has more than 200 miles of hiking trails, an organic farm, open-air living spaces, yoga pavilion and outdoor pool and spa. “Our program is particularly good for mothers and sons,” says owner and founder Alex Glasscock. “The intense daily regimen offers a physical and mental challenge, while the picturesque surroundings and off-the-grid nature of the program”—the Ranch has no WiFi or cell service—“allow for bonding without constant interruption.” The routine includes four to five hours of mountain biking, core and ab work, weights, yoga and a private afternoon massage, all fueled by a 1,400-calorie-a-day organic vegetarian diet. Guests are strongly encouraged to prepare before arrival. “Some people might need to gear up two, three months in advance, which a mother and son can do together,” says Julie Danziger of Ovation Vacations in New York.

What: COMPACT LUXURY CROSSOVERS

[µ]

New leaner, greener familyfriendly cars.

Cabin Comforts The slope-roofed Q3 has standard leather trim, heated 12-way power front seats, keyless pushbutton start, Xenon headlamps, a panoramic sunroof and LED cabin lighting.

No segment is hotter than crossovers, with high-end brands rolling out models in unexpected sizes and styles. Buyers who don’t need room for sofas or a softball team will love these five petite crossovers that snub waste without skimping on style, features and safety.

1 Lexus NX

2 Audi Q3

The forthcoming Lexus NX trumpets a bolder direction for Toyota’s luxury division: a shapely and intriguingly detailed crossover, whatever you think of Lexus’ predator-mouthed “spindle” grille. On sale this fall, the NX 200t adopts Lexus’ first turbo gasoline engine, a 2.0-liter fourcylinder. With its 2.5-liter hybrid system, the NX 300h should deliver a class-best 40 mpg or more. Both models offer frontor all-wheel-drive.

Nine inches shorter than the popular Q5, and nearly 27 inches shorter than the threerow Q7, the Q3 highlights the small-medium-large crossover strategy being adopted by several luxury carmakers. On sale in September, the Q3 gets Audi’s 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo engine (here with 200 horsepower), and a choice of front-wheel or Quattro allwheel-drive.

[µ]

In Control The GLA adds a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard 4Matic AWD (with a frontdrive version coming in spring 2015).

3 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 The GLA offers a grand tour of Mercedes’ bold new design themes, including the “power dome” hood of the SL sports car and the swooping, scalloped lines of the CLS sedan. A 2.0-liter turbo four spins out 208 horses and a robust 258 pound-feet of torque, good for zero-to-60-mph sprints in about 6.4 seconds. Base Prices: $33,000 (est.) Contact: 800.367.6372, mbusa.com

4 2015 Porsche Macan

[µ] On the Horizon

A fuel-sipping diesel Macan arrives next year, followed by a plug-in hybrid model.

The Macan is lower, 6.5 inches shorter and up to 500 pounds lighter than the larger Cayenne. The Turbo’s 3.6-liter biturbo V6, 400-horsepower engine urges the Porsche to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and to a 165-mph top speed. And the full arsenal of Porsche technology comes aboard. Base Prices: $49,900 for the S and $72,300 for the Turbo Contact: 800.767.7243, porsche.com/usa

5 2015 Lincoln MKC The new MKC one-ups its stablemate, Ford’s high-end Escape, with an optional 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder with 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. It manages its own speed in traffic with adaptive cruise control, and monitors blind spots, lane departures and crossing traffic. Base Price: $33,100 Contact: 800.521.4140, lincoln.com
