Be inventive. When details are unusual, even subtly unusual, that’s exciting. “The kitchen is part of the décor of the overall home now. The details, the choices you make for it tell the story of what you love. Get excited about materials, and blend them in interesting ways. Consider open shelving, not just for pots and plates but for pottery and other statement pieces. Bring in artwork. Embrace clean lines, but make it dramatic. Details can be simple but sophisticated and surprising, too.”

EDITOR’S LETTER
ARTS & DECORATION
W
hile recently browsing an antique shop in Flat Rock, North Carolina, I picked up an issue of Arts & Decoration magazine, circa March 1927. Charmed by its vintage photographs and retro appeal, I took it home to study its content. What insightful words of design wisdom I discovered in its pages. A few to take note of, and for us design devotees to keep in mind...
On Gardens: “Gardens, like everything else in the world, should be made with imagination as well as knowledge. There must seem leisure in the loveliness—and permanency. In short, beauty of a garden lies in looking lived in, by dreams at least.” On Room Composition: “It is one thing to be able to make up a pretty color scheme and quite a different matter to bring all the diverse elements of a room together in such fashion as to make a beautiful composition. People live in these compositions; move about in them. Therefore, they must of necessity be as sound in their structural composition as a group of sculpture and as lovely in their color choice and arrangement as is the work of the painter upon canvas.” On Architecture: “As American dwellings are built better, more permanently and more beautifully, they will be regarded less as real estate and more as homes, and with that change in attitude, the status of the home as the nucleus of society will approach more closely the older American tradition.”

Furnishings don’t make a home. Life does. And life isn’t something that comes from a store. Design is the way you present your lifestyle to the world. And that’s when the right furnishings make all the difference.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
fall. Welcome to the fall edition of Luxe Interiors + Design. As we prepare for the next season, I can’t help but think how active the design community was this past summer. First, Starlight Home Theater partnered with Luxe and Auton Motorized Systems to host a happy hour inside their new space at the Cantoni showroom. It was a successful event as many people gathered to peruse the company’s latest offerings. Up next, Aria Stone Gallery opened their museum-like showroom on Hi Line Drive, with each slab presented as a piece of art to allow the viewer to appreciate the stone for its natural beauty and history. In addition, New Life Hardwoods hosted their grand opening on Slocum Street and raffled off the award-winning Hive chair designed by United Kingdom-based Rawstudio. Finally, Roche Bobois honored five of Dallas’ leading designers at the first annual Fab 5 event. Recipients included Laura Lee Clark Falconer, Sherry Hayslip, Michelle Meredith, Mary Anne Smiley and Emily Summers. Congratulations ladies on your success and dedication. I hope you enjoy the new issue of Luxe, and look forward to seeing you at more events this fall.

Since its launch earlier this year, Aria Stone Gallery has been met with a welcome reception at its Dallas Design District venue. The showroom is orchestrated to highlight the company’s tony repertoire of decorative stone elements—which have been garnered from elite quarries in such exotic locales as Brazil, Turkey and India—that include granite, marble, quartzite and onyx available in over 60 hues. For owner Vinny Tavares, the concept for the showroom came to him after a visit to the National Museum in Stockholm. “I chose to hang the individual slabs of stone on the walls, much like works of art in a museum,” notes Tavares. “My hope is that these settings conjure inspiration for using our offerings in a unique way.” ariastonegallery.com
Created from a series of interconnected geometric shapes with metallic-finished cores, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler’s Welles light fixture is a compelling addition to the brothers’ exclusive line of furnishings. Since launching their namesake collection, Gabriel Scott, last year, the architects-turned-designers’ chic set has rapidly expanded—with plans to introduce a similar piece in the form of a sconce—and there are no signs of slowing down. “Our intention was to offer a flexible lighting system that gives decorators a maximum amount of possibilities,” notes Richler. gabriel-scott.com

GREAT OUTDOORS This season, stepping into Four Hands’ Austin showroom and headquarters is comparable to entering a life-size terrarium, complete with vibrant succulents, antique design elements and natural moss, all of which were expertly placed “to bring the outdoors in,” according to visual merchandising manager Frances Weil. “We endeavor to maximize every livable space, which includes the outdoors,” she says, “making this area another room in the home.” Some of the brand’s newly released pieces include the featured Josie sideboard, left, and Cyrus round table, below, which is crafted from concrete, “a material that is usually found outside,” Weil says, “but also mixes well in interior settings to break up the monotony of more traditional materials.” fourhandshome.com

vintage tale

When interior designer Heather Harkovich opened her Austin firm and retail store, she did so with the intent to cultivate a collection of light, coastal-inspired and approachable décor; a style of furnishings that she felt was in short supply in the Hill Country region. This season, Harkovich says she is most looking forward to adding customization to the upholstery brands she carries, two of which are Vanguard Furniture and Sherrill Furniture. “My current focus is on texture rather than specific color schemes,” she says. “Contrasting textiles— whether in different hues or finishes—infuse a piece with a distinctive element.” Harkovich also offers consummate design services with an emphasis on vacation and second homes. heatherscotthome.com
For Kim Hoegger, a fixation with mixing vintage architectural pieces with contemporary furnishings ignited the Rockwall-based designer’s interest in launching her own home and décor shop. Brimming with a unique array of antiques, vibrant wallcoverings—such as Thibaut’s alluring South Sea print in turquoise, shown here—and custom cabinetry, Modern Vintage embraces the juxtaposition between old and new. “My design aesthetic embodies the imperfection and charm of antiques while respecting the modern lifestyles of my clients,” notes Hoegger, who is also in the midst of fabricating her own line of textiles. “This eclectic mix will definitely bring a fresh approach to the Dallas design realm.” kimhoeggerhome.com
Q+A
Luxe sits down with interior designer Heather Harkovich, the creative vision behind Heather Scott Home & Design, to discuss her current inspirations.
What inspired you to begin a career in design? I have always had an interest in fine arts, but instead pursued a corporate career in print and television advertising before discovering that interiors are my real passion. How are you influenced on a daily basis? Landscape sparks my creativity because I truly appreciate the colors and patterns of nature. I just spent three weeks in Montana, where I was really able to see the beauty and richness of this country and draw inspiration for my projects. What specific colors, patterns or textures resonate most with you? I prefer watercolors—such as soft blues and greens—for accents, and neutrals for the envelope of a space. For texture, I like to use velvet, linen or mohair to create interest. Overall, I try to create a serene environ. Who are some of your design icons? I am always looking out for the work of Suzanne Kasler, Beth Webb and Melanie Turner, who all happen to hail from the Atlanta area. Growing up in the South myself, I believe that is why I am drawn to their aesthetics, which are classy and timeless yet impactful.

COLOR CORRECTED Italian design house Poltrona Frau recently unveiled 11 new sumptuously appointed furniture lines, all of which were inspired by the rich history of luxury automobile and aviation models. Roberto Lazzeroni’s Montera chair is a two-tone design—shown here in camel and turquoise leathers—set atop a rich wengestained ash wood base. Available in a vibrant amalgam of colorways, Montera embodies a sophisticated silhouette, which Lazzeroni achieved via an ardent focus on lightness of form. poltronafrau.com

Sophisticated silhouettes and exquisite design details make up the latest assemblage of interior furnishings and accessories available at Ebanista’s Dallas Design Center locale. Founders Fari and Melinda Pakzad designed the 70-piece collection— which includes such elegant pieces as a rock crystal chandelier and a plush settee—in honor of the Costa Mesa, California-based company’s 10th anniversary. The charming set also features a selection of decorative lighting, ornate hand-carved accents, paintings and elegant case goods, which the Pakzads say “celebrate luxury and sophistication with ease.” ebanista.com

GREAT HEIGHTS The raw quality and natural allure of Machu Picchu inspired designer Jiun Ho to create his latest furniture collection entitled Jiun Ho IV, a collaborative effort with Peruvian-born textile designer Sandra Jordan. Part of the new line is the Chinchero bench, shown, enveloped in Jordan’s olive-hued Prima Alpaca fabric—a luxurious fiber that was historically implemented by Incan royalty and evokes the ancient heritage of the Andean culture. According to Ho, the bench, which is bestowed with a framework of robust steel, “reflects the magical essence of the royal estate built with eternity in mind.” jiunhodejia.com

“I find that many of my clients are attracted to the idea of using color but are fearful in applying it,” Boyd says. “Tabletop is a great way to have fun and experiment with interesting combinations.” The designer chose Anna Weatherley’s goldrimmed charger for its amethyst color and her scalloped white dinner plate for its bright note; the hand-painted Jaune de Chrome dessert dish serves as a complement to both, and the leopard-print Norbar fabric neutralizes the color scheme. Boyd layered Rogaska crystal throughout the smoky purple dining room and added delicate Hermès flatware as jewelry for the table—a play on the literal reference she made with an agate bracelet as a napkin ring. Alongside the fireplace, they make an inviting space even cozier in time for a fabulous fall get together. Placemats, Bagatelle in Violine; manuelcanovas.com. FERNAND LÉGER’S ENDURING ART PIECE DEPICTING ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN LIFE INSPIRES AN EXHIBITION ON THE MODERN METROPOLIS.
S
o many modern artists expressed their world through their experience of the street and the changes they were observing in the urban fabric. The modern metropolis was the central symbolic site of modernity. Léger: Modern Art and The Metropolis—the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition on the metropolis and the exchanges of influence between Fernand Léger and the artists, architects, filmmakers and poets
of the 1920s international avant-garde in Paris—makes its debut this fall. Running from October through January, the exhibition was inspired by The City (shown here), a formative work in 20th-century art, and one of the core masterpieces in the museum’s collection. “We wanted to focus on the metropolis to show how current modern art’s engagement with the world can be for today’s city dwellers,” notes exhibit curator Anna Vallye. “What’s so remarkable is that the city Léger painted almost 100 years ago is still completely familiar to us today. Of course, cities have changed since then, but there is also something profoundly enduring about Léger’s vision.” philamuseum.org

FIVE MINUTES WITH...
BON VIVANT
WITH A NEW BOOK CHRONICLING THE RESTORATION OF HIS FRENCH CHÂTEAU AND AN UPCOMING TABLEWARE LINE FOR ROYAL LIMOGES, L.A. DESIGNER TIM CORRIGAN STILL FINDS TIME FOR A LITTLE JOIE DE VIVRE.
IN YOUR NEW BOOK, AN INVITATION TO CHÂTEAU DU GRAND-LUCÉ... Many people think
that classic design is outdated and uncomfortable and I wanted to show that nothing could be further from the truth. Design is a pendulum and while it swings from trend to trend, it always returns to the classical because there is an innate sense of security in it. It is more forgiving, as it accepts that daily accoutrements are a part of our living spaces.
YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN:
WHEN ENTERTAINING GUESTS…
None of what I do is too studied. I think a flea market treasure can be mixed in with an 18th-century console and you get to appreciate each of them more because of their relationship to one another. Who wants to live in a room that whispers, “Look, but don’t touch?”
It is important to make them feel as if they are in their own home. I always leave flowers, freshly baked goodies, magazines or books I think they will enjoy and a scented candle in their room to welcome them.
ARCHITECTURAL WHY UNDERTAKE SUCH A PAINSTAKING RESTORATION?
I love the secrets that you find in the stones of old buildings and the challenge of taking something that was designed for a different way of life and subtly transforming it for the way we live today. FURNISHING THE CHATEAU…
Was a real labor of love and I used an approach that I would advise anyone to: Buy what you love and it will somehow find its proper place. Clockwise from top: Corrigan’s French estate; Macassar Ebony & Ostrich Egg lamp by TC Home; a seating area of the master bedroom featured in An Invitation to Château du Grand-Lucé; an antique brass fire screen; the designer in his Loire Valley home.
MOST FAVORED
CALIFORNIA VS. FRANCE: For
me, Southern California is all about comfort, casual living and self- expression, but there is just something about the French respect for culture, history and tradition that really resonates with me.
PERIOD: Mid-tolate 18th-century France was such a remarkable time for architecture, because it held the highest level of refinement of the French aesthetic, but it was tempered by the age of enlightenment. PAINT A PICTURE CTURE OF TIME SPENT AT YOUR PICTURESQUE CTURESQUE CHÂTEAU: It’s like going back
in time to when life was all much slower and people really had the time to be with each other. I can think of no other place in the world I would rather be when I am afforded the luxury of time.

When designer Cédric Ragot conceives an interior accent, such as this ombré rug he created for French atelier Roche Bobois, he perpetually aims to conjure a link between the functional and the conceptual. “Ponyo was actually one of my first forays into the art of rug design,” says Ragot, adding that he “endeavored to invite a harmonious blend of tones, which in turn, serve to warm up a room.” Featured here in a raspberry-centric scheme, the artfully devised floorcovering is handwoven from sumptuous New Zealand wool.

This season, Kyle Bunting’s effervescent hide-on-hair pattern work collides with South Florida design studio Britto Charette’s penchant for Art Deco architecture. The result is this hourglass stool, which marks the duo’s first venture into the home accessories arena. “I like this piece as a single side table, but it works best when used in multiples,” says Bunting. “The juxtaposition of the warm and tactile hide against the opaque base’s smooth silhouette is nearly the perfect combination of materials and surfaces.”
“This stool’s concentric circles remind us of an age-old tree trunk. Overall, we adore the clean look, especially after a recent trip to Japan where home décor is pared down and streamlined.”

In the early 1950s, celebrated Italian architect and furniture visionary Gio Ponti experimented with several models of this exquisite case good. Designated with the simple moniker Chest of Drawers, the time-honored design far exceeds its humble name. Bestowed with a robust elmwood body and an ivory-finished front, the midcenturystyle piece is accented with handles in elm, Italian walnut, mahogany and rosewood, all resting on lustrous brass feet.
What may appear to be a straightforward yet luxuriously appointed chair swathed in a graphite-hued velvet is anything but basic. This plush beauty, a piece from the newly launched Luxury in Motion collection by Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman, is also a fully functioning recliner, silently extending at the push of a concealed upholstered button. “The graceful contours of this chair’s frame lend a sartorial element,” says creative director Phillip Jeffries. The jewelry-like Greek key motif at its base is the finishing touch to this well-tailored piece.
“While linear in form, this chair sits in motion. Timeless yet bold, I definitely can envision it in the bedroom of my Milan apartment. The Greek key detailing is an added bonus.”

ATRIUM FINE HOMES
HOW DO YOU DEFINE A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT? It’s when the architect, designer and our building team all feel a sense of pride about our contributions—and when the client truly loves the design and feel of their new residence. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENTS WOULD CHARACTERIZE YOU? Easy to work with—and trustworthy. I stress to my team to be patient and maintain a positive attitude throughout the project. The client comes first in every situation.
What started as one man’s resolve to deliver residential dreams has emerged as a companywide mission to build far more than the timeless luxury properties for which it is known. That’s why, at Atrium Fine Homes, led by CEO Jojy Koshy, the journey is just as important as the ultimate destination. “It’s our belief that each and every client who gives us their trust should expect nothing less than our full commitment to meeting their expectations of quality and service,” Koshy says. To that end, the Atrium team crafts an experience built on honesty, transparency and no-stone-unturned attention to detail. “When a client starts expressing their vision, we listen,” says Koshy, whose Dallas-based company has earned national recognition for its distinctive work. “Then we collaborate with innovations from our global design palette. The final product is very personalized, a testament to their vision and lifestyle.” From the beginning, Koshy’s vision was to make the seemingly unattainable—museum-quality design and construction—possible for homeowners seeking more manageable layouts. In realizing that pillar of the business, Atrium has assembled a team of skilled, innovative and versatile professionals capable of executing projects of all sizes and architectural styles, with daily attention to budgets and schedules. The result is a homebuilding journey that, time and again, doesn’t just meet client expectations—it exceeds them. “We provide a world-class experience for every single client,” says Koshy.
The Mediterranean-inspired architecture at this private residence meshes with classically designed landscaping, a circle drive and charming water features. The stone façade, arched openings and custom iron doors provide a grand entrance.
This formal Tuscan-inspired kitchen features expansive wood-beamed ceilings, hand-carved details and a flood of natural light. The rich, neutral backsplash and countertops fit seamlessly with the detail of the custom cabinetry.

WHICH PROJECTS HAVE BROUGHT YOU THE MOST SATISFACTION? The projects where the clients are more adventurous, provide open communication and trust us to allow more options and solutions. Also, when the clients care as much as we do about the details. HOW DO YOU DEFINE A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT? A great project functions well and serves the clients’ needs, but it also evokes a positive emotion, much like a painting. You think “how inviting,” or “how original”—or simply, “wow.” HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENTS WOULD CHARACTERIZE YOU? I would hope they’d describe me as someone who listens, who cares and who is creative. Someone who welcomes new challenges— and who is conscientious and honest.
DESIGN HOUSE AND FABRIC HOUSE For nearly four decades, clients have turned to award-winning Design House for the design and development of their projects, whether residential or commercial. And, two years ago, Fabric House became their source for fabrics, wallcoverings and window treatments. The difference is in the details, a hallmark of the Houston-based firm, as well as the thoughtful, engaged and creative approach that distinguishes its client relations. “We gain a thorough understanding of the project, the goals of the client and how they will use the space,” says Connie LeFevre, president. “In [creating] that environment, we personalize it for the client, making the solution even more unique.” The Design House team never stops searching for new product and new ways to use it. Look no further than its 10,000-square-foot interior design studio and showroom, a jaw-dropping showcase for one-of-a-kind pieces from all over the world—furniture and antiques, art and accessories, linens and bedding, lighting fixtures, and the boutique lines at Fabric House. This inherent ability to adapt to styles ranging from traditional and transitional to contemporary gives Design House a versatility that further distinguishes its brand. “The variety is what keeps us fresh and excited about what we do,” LeFevre says. “We’re diversified, and we love it that way.”
The custom, leather-upholstered headboard to the ceiling—framed on either side by hand-painted wallcoverings—complements the beamed, vaulted ceiling and the carved fireplace directly across from it.

There is a natural stone for most any color palette. Typhoon Bordeaux granite, with creams, reds, grays and golds, is a stunning choice for kitchens, vanities, showers or exterior use.
Quartzite is the newest addition to IMC’s natural stone offering. With its graceful movement and dramatic patterns, it can become the focal point of any room.

Granite is a beautiful way to add warmth, beauty and value to your home. The durability and easy care make it a smart choice.
“Every unique slab of exotic stone can transform a room in unimaginable ways.”
Think big! Natural stone slabs aren’t only for countertops. Cosmic black granite with veins of gold and silver surround the room with a feeling of pure luxury.
Fusion quartzite with its vibrant colors and flowing movement, like many natural stones, truly is nature’s artwork.

from a family tradition. “My grandfather was a conservator of antiques,” he explains. “Elvis Presley was his biggest client for a number of decades.” With restoration as his background, Small learned the importance of historical accuracy and the significance of preserving cultural heritage. In 1993, a set of modern Saarinen chairs ultimately set him on a new path. “I wanted to find more pieces in the style of those chairs,” Small explains. After eight years of studying and collecting modern design, it became evident to him that modernist works needed refurbishment to be collectible, too. Thus in 2001, Forma Revivo was launched, which has since widened its scope from the high-end restoration and sale of midcentury classics to interior design. “It took me years to understand the importance of modernist works restoration,” he says. “I use the finishes that were originally specified and the goal is to try to return a piece to its original state.” formarevivo.com; 713.965.7131

A former sushi chef by trade, Wilson, who launched his eponymous studio—Michael Wilson Design—in 2000 with a custom floor lamp, describes his aesthetic as artistic and functional, haphazard and decisive. Inspired by wabi-sabi— the Japanese art of finding beauty through imperfection—and midcentury modern design, the self-taught artisan’s tables, chairs, cabinets, stools and light fixtures suggest a profundity for nature coupled with an intimate, integrated flow. “The lines and forms in my furniture are soft, elegant and fluid,” says Wilson. Labeling himself an artist first and a craftsman second, Wilson uses ash, walnut and carbon steel to produce covetable works that are organic, modern and unusual. “At the end of the day, I want to focus my efforts on unique details and a quality product,” he says. “These are the things that speak to me most.” michaelwilsondesign.com; 213.200.5207

etting out to renovate the kitchen of their cottage-style home in New Canaan, Connecticut, a couple didn’t have to search too far for their muse. With Dutch and Belgian heritages, respectively, the husband and wife instinctively harked back to the enchanting
aesthetics for which their native lands are revered. “We wanted to make sure that we retained a very cozy, vintage European vibe, like that of an old bakery, for instance,” homeowner and designer Tessa Neleman-Pimontel explains. Another check off their wish list was to keep the space open (notice the pared down cabinetry; the simple ceramic subway tiling by the Bertazonni hood and stove; uninterrupted counter space), organized and flooded with light while retaining a sense of genuineness. “This kitchen adds an instant feeling of authenticity to our home,” she says. “It works out well as an open space time together. Every afternoon, the low-setting sun pours in, which adds to the whole mood we were aiming to capture.”

DISPLAY TYPE Opting for limited upper cabinetry, the Nelemans had to search for alternative answers to de rigueur storage questions. “The idea of the hutch was always in our minds, but it only came to fruition after we found the right pieces,” Tessa notes. “Nearing the final stages of the renovation, we took a trip to Mexico. We knew what we were looking for, but were very surprised when we found it in an old hardware store. We fell in love with the huge hutch and bought it right there and then.” To balance the rustic nature of the towering case, the homeowners kept it simple. “We like white as a base, but there are many touches of Delft and even Guatemalan earthenware in the mix. The key is to make sure that whatever is visible is positioned well (handles all turned the same direction, everything evenly spaced) and to edit, edit, edit. Keep only what you really need and use often.” For additional visual variety, they encircled the antique Swedish farm table with steel bistro chairs from Vagabond Vintage in Atlanta.

sure that my client used every square inch of her home, and that each space met her needs and represented who she was,” Stanley says. The resulting bathroom is a study in simple elegance, and the impact of letting just a few statement pieces have their moment in the spotlight: a sinuous freestanding Waterworks tub entices a leisurely soak; dreamy draperies in a blush tone coyly flirt with a coquettish portrait of Marilyn Monroe; two-tone marble floors are striking yet feel as if they’ve always been there; and finally, the crown jewel of the room, a polyhedron chandelier Stanley sourced from JF Chen in Los Angeles that would get the most pragmatic person’s pulse racing.

CLOTHES QUARTERS What’s a designer to do when a client’s existing closet space simply isn’t sufficient for their wardrobe? Well, you relocate the master bedroom and transform the remaining space into a dressing room fit for a Rodeo Drive boutique, of course. “I like to think of closets as a fun playroom for women, so I try to make them big enough where you can have friends come over, hang out and play dress up,” Stanley says. “This typically calls for a seating area.” The designer brought in a custom chaise that offers her client (and her client’s fortunate guests) a place to sit and ponder the day’s sartorial decisions, while an antique rug from Lawrence of La Brea complements sleek custom cabinetry. “This is one of my favorite designs I’ve done,” Stanley says. “It’s every woman’s dream.”

JOE LUCAS
ENTRÉZ-VOUS INTERIOR DESIGNER JOE LUCAS WORKED HIS DESIGN MAGIC, CREATING A GRAPHIC GALLERY WALL WITH PAPERS ENVISIONED AS WORKS OF ART.
Los Angeles designer and one half of Harbinger LA, Joe Lucas created an entryway to remember using the sleekest fall wallcoverings. A “sucker for a salon-style wall,” Lucas began his dynamic scene with artist Sharon Lee’s debut line as his anchor. “The chic gray-and-saffron combo of Lee’s Chrysanthemum design caught my eye instantly,” he says. Building from there, Lucas approached many of the papers as he would art. “Kelly Wearstler’s provocative new Crescent design is a recent obsession, so it needed to be framed. And the sculptural Weitzner paper lent itself to being floated in an acrylic box, earning the focal point position in the space.” From a Holland & Sherry-clad flowerpot and a Wearstler-wrapped lampshade to an Innovationsupholstered stool, Lucas reveals that wallpaper knows no boundaries.

Naturally lured by wallcoverings that possess an assured straight-lined disposition, interiors devotee Sara Ruffin Costello unexpectedly found herself swept away by the season’s more abstract offerings. “I was drawn to patterns that appear out of focus; especially those peachy, warm tones,” she explains. “They feel less expectant than chevron or stripes (which I love) that continue to pop up each year.” After reveling in a veritable trove of papers, Costello sought to create a sunburst, turning to London-based moldings manufacturer Solomon & Wu for a bit of architectural encouragement. “The plaster moldings were a structured counterbalance to the loose, dreamy quality of the papers, and the dynamic sunburst shape has an artistic character to it, like a patterned color wheel.”

PHILIP GORRIVAN
CASE STUDY GEOMETRICS AND BOLD PRINTS WERE THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THIS SOPHISTICATEDLY CLAD BOOKCASE ORNAMENTED BY INTERIOR DESIGNER PHILIP GORRIVAN.
“There is so much to be excited about when it comes to wallpaper,” exclaims New York-based interior designer Philip Gorrivan, who’s heralded his longstanding love affair with the material throughout his design career. His studious composition began with an unadorned bookcase that, according to the designer, left much to be desired. Presented with the latest lines, Gorrivan cloaked the back of the shelves with a subtle yet striking Farrow & Ball stripe and developed groupings of covered books in stylized vignettes, each layer telling its own story. “Dedar’s new boldly hued geometrics alongside Clarke & Clarke’s punchy floral patterns
“I tend to gravitate toward geometrics or patterns that aren’t so directional. I love products that are fearlessly gutsy. It’s fun to create a little tension in a space by introducing a wallpaper that appears to completely break all the rules.”

ust as they put the finishing touches on their dream home in Louisiana, a vibrant couple with three daughters found themselves moving to Houston because of a job transfer. After settling into their new city for a decade, a home in
the Tanglewood community caught their eye. Perched atop a large sloping lot, it looked out onto breathtaking views of the Houston Country Club golf course. Although the house itself was nice, its Georgian-style architecture and embellishments weren’t to the couple’s taste. “The older I get, the more minimal I get,” says the wife. But they loved the site enough to buy the house and redesign it. “The couple wanted the home to reflect their Louisiana heritage, and also their love of beautiful things,” says interior designer Sandra Lucas. “They love to entertain and wanted to enjoy the home with their family.”

In the living room, interior designer Sandra Lucas created an elegant conversation area with 19th-century Italian canapés from Area upholstered in Holly Hunt Great Plains fabric. Above the mantel, purchased at Chateau Domingue, a painting by Clay Wagstaff pays homage to a cottonwood seen from the terrace.
Architect Dillon Kyle used steel-framed glass doors from Hope’s Windows to welcome guests into the home’s soaring entry. The flooring, Pennsylvania green flagstone with a natural cleft finish, adds texture to the space, as does the ceiling detail. The antique chandelier, circa 1900, is from Skelton - St. John.

As the heart of the home, the kitchen opens to the breakfast area and family room. Custom cabinetry by JP Inside Trim & Cabinets balances the granite countertops from Walker Zanger. Architect Dillon Kyle drew up plans that would transform the house, inside and out. “The plans really altered everything from the exterior wall material and roofing to the location of the staircase, all interior rooms and garage,” says Kyle. Adds home builder Jed Goodall, “We ended up tearing down the whole second floor and keeping part of the first intact.” Catering to the owners’ appreciation of such architects as A. Hays Town and Al Jones, who mix clean lines and repurposed materials, the new design was kept traditional yet simplified, and includes rustic elements such as antique beams. The new layout offers a better flow for entertaining, with the kitchen now open to a family room. Every bedroom got a bathroom, and Kyle created a large study with a seating area. “In our previous home, we tended to congregate in the study,” says the husband. “I would be in there working at night, and everybody else would come in.” When designing the interiors, Lucas chose a subtle palette and relatively simple lines. “The color scheme helps bring the outdoors in, and the simplicity of the design was done with the purpose of not competing with the views,” she explains. With the revised floor plan, those vistas are now maximized; in the original home, visitors entering the front door would be looking down a hallway. “The couple wanted to see through to the scenery, so someone would be drawn through the house,” Kyle says. “Therefore, the entry access was moved from the front of the house to the side.”

The family room features a rustic fireplace made of antique cedar bayou brick. Directly above is a set of French shutters with their original teal paint, discovered at W. Gardner, which conceal a television. Sofas from George Cameron Nash, the custom chair by Neal & Company and an antique rug from Matt Camron pull the area together.
The homeowners were enchanted with a Florence hotel’s millwork, which danced up onto the ceiling. That millwork inspired the entry hall’s ceiling—and its gray hue—which was designed by Kyle. Walnut flooring from Schenck & Company runs underfoot.

Steed also incorporated some of the homeowners’ favorite plants into the design, including camellias, gingers, redbuds and crape myrtles. Lucas and the woman of the house furnished the interiors with a mix of family antiques and new furniture pieces that were reupholstered and restyled to work in the new home alongside a selection of modern art. In the spirit of homes designed by architect A. Hays Town, who often reused materials, old brick was added to the existing structure and painted white to suit the homeowners’ taste. The bench at pool level is vintage Brown Jordan. Plantings by McDugald-Steele include a bed of roses by the stair and the fig vine climbing a pavilion.
Antique beams accent the vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom. The existing hand-carved four-poster bed resides with a custom bench fully upholstered in Carleton V fabric. Table lamps, purchased at Boxwood Interiors, were made from antique iron fragments and rest upon French walnut tables.

a unique vibe. “The coffee table in the family room was made by local artisan James Dawson, and it has a wonderful hand-hewed wooden top that gives a lot of warmth,” Lucas says. For the dining room, the designer, along with the owners, commissioned a wall-size piece of art by Robert Rector, who happens to live near Baton Rouge. The home, which incorporates just enough Louisiana flavor to give the couple a sense of their shared heritage, has become a popular gathering place for the whole family. “Our children are now grown, but we come back together for family meals,” says the wife. “It’s a warm, comfortable home. he homeowners have been summering here for years with their family,” says architect Brian Korte of the relaxed, informal second home he designed for a couple near Austin. “But once they became empty
nesters, they decided it was time for an update.” Problem was the former lake house was not only very outdated, but it also didn’t connect well to its picturesque setting on Horseshoe Bay. And so, the homeowners opted to build a new dwelling on the same property, but one that maximized its unique location. “David Lake is a family friend,” says the husband, referring to one of the architecture firm’s principals who collaborated with Korte and Cameron Smith on the project. Adds the wife: “Along with my husband, the design team talked me into something clean and contemporary, with lots of glass to take advantage of the lake views.”

The architect was also sensitive about size. “You’d never know from the street that the house has such a vertical presence on the lake,” he says. The split-level home presents itself as a single-story ranch from the road. “The land sloped significantly in the back,” adds builder David Mauzé, who worked with his firm’s project superintendent, Noal Pierce. “To have two stories with a high-glass fronted living room on the lake, we had to excavate 13 feet down.” LUXE INTERIORS

On the main level are the primary living spaces, the master suite and another guest room. “From the get-go, our intent was to create a casual getaway vibe,” says Korte. “The couple is here to enjoy the lake and its activities. Our goal was to give them a stress-free retreat.” This was partly achieved by low-maintenance exterior materials: board-formed concrete, cedar wood siding, local limestone, thermally modified wood for the porch deck, aluminum-clad wood windows and a galvanized-metal roof. “The same—or similar—materials simply become more refined inside,” adds the architect.

Folded plate steel stairs, with wood treads and vertical stainless-steel cable railings, connect the balcony off the screened-in porch to the hammock terrace below. The rails have sailboat pulley hardware to string the cables and give a nod to the lake and its activities.
A slatted partial wall and matching sliding barn door provide separation between the master bedroom and bathroom while complementing the home’s architecture. Walnut side tables sandwich a custom tufted headboard by Neal & Company. The wool carpet from River Oaks Rugs relates to the outdoors.
Zembrino honed marble countertops from Delta Granite rest atop a custom steel-and-walnut vanity by Cactus Max Fine Metal Artwork. The exposed blackened-steel towel bars designed by Korte and white slatted-wood details add to the master bathroom’s airy feel while Kohler’s brushed-nickel Purist fixtures complete the setting.

Part of the relaxed informality also came from the interior layout, especially in the open living space, which encompasses a small kitchen and is connected to the enclosed screened-in porch. “We separated the living room and screened-in porch with a thick structural wall, which has fireplaces on either side,” says Korte. “Inside, we lowered the wall to allow for clerestory glazing above, creating a balance of daylight and tree canopy.” The exposed-beam ceiling also dramatically rises toward the picture window, making the living space appear larger while further integrating the lake into the architecture. “We really live on the porch,” says the wife about the enclosed space featuring an abstract interpretation of Japanese shoji-style slatted privacy screens. “Since we don’t have a dining room, this space is where we entertain friends or our kids and their families when they visit.”

Interior designer Peggy McGaughy further ensured the home’s furnishings worked well at the lake. For example, the porch furniture is wicker and teak, along with mesh dining chairs, all of which withstand heat, humidity and moisture. “We also used elements from the former house and updated them to have a contemporary flair,” McGaughy says. Case in point: Chairs from the old home were slipcovered in graphic Schumacher fabric, and the living room sofa was reupholstered in a Perennials outdoor textile. “The main goal was to have clean-lined, neutral and livable furniture,” the designer says. “Nothing could be too distracting.” It turns out the homeowners spend frequent weekends at their new lake house, as well as endless summers. Says the wife, “One night, we watched the moon rise up from the lake and over the home’s successive panels of glass. Where else do you get that?” L

Taking cues from the horizontal lines of the home’s woodwork, the well-used boat dock is similarly attired on the lake and features painted steel and cedar slats with a LifeTime finish and a galvanized standing seam roof. This area also includes hydraulic lifts for the ski boat and WaveRunner.
Green lawns, native trees and drought-resistant plants— designed by Korte and fellow architect Cameron Smith, and installed by Backbone Valley Nursery—make the transition from home to lake seamless. The LEED-certified house uses lake-sourced HVAC and other sustainable features, including low-emissive finishes and locally acquired materials.

his Dallas home is rich in its history,” says interior designer Linda Fritschy of the white classic Revivalstyle house she was tasked with revamping. Built in 1914 by Bishop Edwin Mouzon—a Southern Methodist
University founder—the dwelling was used as both a fraternity and a sorority house before being converted back into a single-family home. The current owner was very familiar with the space, which had been his childhood abode, and now lives here with his wife. “Growing up in the house was a lot of fun,” says the husband. “It was always filled with friends and family from all walks of life. But even though the home is 100 years old, we wanted a more contemporary look.” To accomplish the owners’ goal of a contemporary aesthetic, Dan McKeithen, who helmed the build, performed an extensive renovation. “The house was gutted to the studs,” says McKeithen, who demolished and rebuilt the rear portion of the home, which had been added to through the years. He also relocated the garage from the backyard to a space underneath the rear of the home. The newly expanded kitchen

Interior designer Linda Fritschy used a sisal rug from Truett Fine Carpets & Rugs to add a casual element to the clients’ existing mahogany table and chairs in the formal dining room. The glass chandelier with linen shades, by Minka Group from AA Porter Lighting, illuminates the setting.

and family room now feature ample storage and space thanks to the garage’s repositioning. “The topography was very accommodating to this design,” says McKeithen, pointing to the home’s location atop the highest elevation on the lot. Moving the garage created enough space in the backyard for architects Mark Domiteaux and Laura Baggett to design a brand-new cabana with an outdoor fireplace, which overlooks an inground swimming pool. “It’s very symmetrical and embraces the backyard on a smaller scale,” says Domiteaux. Inside, the architects maintained the home’s classic center hallway, which is flanked by the parlor on the right and the formal dining room on the left. Wide moldings and thick walls provide a sense of scale and solidity in the spacious new family room, while built-in cabinetry supplies extra storage throughout.

“It’s always a joy to collaborate with these architects,” says Fritschy, who worked closely with Domiteaux and Baggett to select the interior finishes. To create the new traditional look the clients requested, the designer chose transitional furnishings with clean lines. “There’s some restraint to the interior palette,” Fritschy explains, noting the spare use of color and pattern throughout the home. Instead, Fritschy created interest by balancing contrasting elements. The interior doors, which have been lacquered black, stand out against the neutral walls and glossy white trim. “That reflective quality gives the home a fresh, modern look,” she says. In addition, it was important for the overall aesthetic to be comfortable and inviting while incorporating a variety of antiques. “I made sure to balance the selection of antiques with modern pieces so the interiors didn’t feel too formal,” the designer adds.

The kitchen was designed with functionality in mind and includes pendants that were original to the home and respect past generations. New white cabinetry by Steve’s Cabinet Shop and countertops fabricated by Il Granito balance Theodore Alexander’s wood barstools from Brendan Bass Showroom.
Landscape architect John Armstrong redesigned the backyard using plants, installed by Southern Botanical, typical of the home’s historic period. Large hollies and magnolias create privacy, while boxwoods, azaleas and ferns provide a more intimate garden space. An inground swimming pool by Waterscapes takes center stage.

According to the owners, it’s common for passersby to stop and compliment them on the home and overall grounds, which were redesigned by landscape architect John Armstrong. He used plantings typical of the home’s historic period, including boxwood, hollies and magnolias, to create elegant vignettes that seamlessly flow from the indoors out. “The garden was planned to allow many of the interior spaces to flow outside, creating the feeling of larger areas,” he says. “The living room flows onto a rear, partially covered terrace that in turn steps down into a beautifully classic rectangular pool with a cabana.” The owners are gratified by the attention and enjoy entertaining guests in their newly renovated home. “Great architecture and interior design have always been important to our family,” says the husband. “We wanted to keep the integrity of the home intact while creating a very usable environment for a modern family.” Although his wife felt some trepidation about taking on such a large project, she too is very happy with the final outcome. “This is our forever house,” she says. hen Charlton Holmes makes the 180-mile drive from his primary home in Shreveport, Louisiana, to his getaway condo in Dallas, he does it in a CLS63 Mercedes, touted for its
powerful engine and great performance. The strength-meets-comfort concept that the owner of Holmes European Motors likes in his vehicles pretty much matched what he asked designer Abbe Fenimore to provide in his Texas residence. “He wanted it to feel like a masculine boutique hotel and was very specific about having details in the space reflect his love of luxury cars,” says Fenimore, noting the custom double baseball topstitch on the leather sectional in the living room that replicates the seats of a high-end sports car. “He appreciates both the fine detail and the quality of the leather, which keeps its structure.” According to the homeowner, he settled on a unit at The Ritz-Carlton because of the quality and location, but the existing space was too formal for his taste. “When I entertain, I prefer everything to be open from the moment you walk in the door, but the original floor plan

Creating a comfortable space for the living room, designer Abbe Fenimore chose an Old Hickory Tannery ottoman, available at Antèks Home Furnishings, for the coffee table. didn’t work that way,” says Holmes, who turned to builder Austin Arnold to reconfigure the existing layout to make better use of the square footage. “I started by straightening out the narrow entry, which

veered to the right so it opened into the kitchen and main living area,” says Arnold. The builder also responded to the owner’s request to carve out a small study. “By borrowing space from a long, narrow half bath and a very large walk-in closet in the master bedroom, I was able to create the extra room,” he says. Meanwhile Fenimore worked in concert with Arnold to refinish the oak floors with a lighter stain, reface the kitchen cabinets, and upgrade the Sheetrock fireplace with a quartzite surround backed by a linear stone-and-glass tile wall; the same materials are used on the kitchen countertops and backsplash. “Because everything is so close together, I was cautious about getting elements to relate to each

other,” says Fenimore. “I selected a stone-and-glass mix so the wall wouldn’t get too shiny, and to introduce pattern and texture.” The textures keep flowing in the living and dining rooms, where the walls are covered with vinyl, the Eames chairs are topped with Bordeaux-colored mohair, and a custom black walnut slab dining table rests on curved stainless-steel legs. “The stainless-steel element keeps it from going too rustic,” says Fenimore. The designer used the same black walnut for the headboard in the master bedroom, where the massive wood statement is backed by a striped cowhide wall. “The cowhide turns the headboard into a sculptural art piece, and it’s also a perfect complement to the suede walls and drapes,” she says. According to the designer, the homeowner decided early to go bold with accents and commissioned pieces from artists that highlight his favorite color—red. For her part, Fenimore used the vibrant hue with

a measured hand, peppering the space with crimson leather cubes in the entry, deep burgundy throw pillows in the living room and master bedroom, and an eye-catching lacquered vanity in the guest room. “Getting the right red was a challenge,” Fenimore says. “It’s a very emotional color, so you have to go easy. In the guest room there’s just a hint, but it makes a statement.” The strong hue also melds perfectly with the warm woods, soft leathers and unusual details such as the dining room fixtures that are fashioned from recycled bicycle parts, all selected to create the atmosphere the homeowner desired. “He likes texture, durability and luxury,” says Fenimore. “And by customizing so many pieces, I was able to provide them all.” L

KARA MANN
ROCK AND ROLL
AN AVANT-GARDE DESIGN SENSIBILITY PAIRED WITH SUBTLE SOPHISTICATION PROMISES AN OVER-THE-TOP DINING ROOM IN CHICAGO.
DISTINCTIVE DÉCOR Designer Kara Mann creates impeccable interiors for clients from her hometown of Chicago to the glittering city of Dubai. When asked about her favored fashion designer, she exclaims “Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. He makes rocker chic elegant,” she continues, almost inadvertently describing her own signature style. In the dining room pictured here, the draperies are made from Missoni fabric, while the chandelier mimics the punk theme of this year’s Met Ball. Recently, Mann launched a collection of supple leather fabrics with Moore & Giles, citing things such as a vintage Gucci motorcycle jacket as inspiration. Not surprising then that she crowns leather her favorite “non-neutral” neutral. Q+A How has your personal style evolved over the years? It’s become more edited, more sophisticated and more simplified. What is one trend that you’d love to see go? As far as interior design, I’d be happy not to see any more overdyed rugs, and for fashion I’m fairly tired of asymmetrical hems.
“I would describe my personal aesthetic and my interior design style as one in the same really...elegant, effortless edge.”

ROBERT PASSAL
DEFINITIVE EDGE
ADVENTUROUS PATTERNS, TAILORED LINES AND JUST THE RIGHT DOSE OF COLOR EQUAL A MODISH MASTERPIECE IN NEW YORK’S GRAMERCY PARK.
GENTLEMEN’S QUARTERS The living room of designer Robert Passal’s New York apartment, with its custom moldings and eclectic accessories, perfectly exhibits his aesthetic, self-described as “classic and tailored with a definitive edge.” Passal’s décor point of view effuses his personal style, although he believes “there is a vast difference between dressing yourself and dressing a room.” With interiors, “space, scale and functionality are all major factors,” he explains. Not one to shy away from color, Passal considers a wide range of shades to be the easiest way to incorporate fashion into the home, his favorite hue being aqua. “I’m often called a peacock,” Passal laughs, “which I’ll take as a chic term of endearment.” Q+A Do you ever use fashion fabrics in your design projects? I’m crazy for men’s suiting, especially gray flannel and cashmere chalk stripes used in upholstery. Do you side more with Chanel’s “remove one item before leaving the house” or Tony Duquette’s “more is more?” I fall somewhere in the middle, but the trick is knowing when to stop. Living with items you love, be it art, accessories or daily heirlooms, makes a house a home.

TOBI TOBIN
NEUTRAL GROUND
SUBTLE PATTERNS, NOTEWORTHY SHAPES AND RICH TEXTURES TAKE CENTER STAGE IN A LAID-BACK CALIFORNIA LIVING SPACE.
INNATE STYLE Best known for a Hollywood-glam aesthetic in a mostly neutral palette, designer and shop owner Tobi Tobin believes that style comes from within, and as is the case with any tastemaker, she claims her tastes have evolved over the years. “I’ve come a long way from wearing preppy embroidered pants in Palm Beach,” she jokes. In her own Los Angeles living room, Tobin expertly layers creams, grays and wood tones, taking cues from Donna Karan—a favorite fashion designer. Her home also works as a place to try out new ideas for her eponymous shop on Sunset Boulevard, where she sells her own furniture collection among vintage pieces and signature candles. Q+A Best style advice? Style truly comes from within, but having the courage to live with it and express it to the world takes confidence. What’s your favorite unexpected neutral? Flax linen is a beautiful neutral, but only when paired with a range of other textures. How do you see fashion trends translated for interiors? Most often through color selection. As designers, we can’t help ourselves. Fashion and interiors have always gone hand in hand.
