BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

INSPIRATION

Eldorado Stone has been at the forefront of its industry for the past 45 years. From its humble beginnings to the international presence it boasts today, Eldorado’s core philosophy has remained the same—believability. Each of the company’s natural ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ Ăƒ Ă€iÂŤ V>ĂŒi` ĂŒ ĂŒ i w iĂƒĂŒ `iĂŒ> Ăƒ v ĂŒiĂ?ĂŒĂ•Ă€i > ` V Ă€] ĂžiĂŒ offers a lightweight, concrete stone veneer solution. VARIABLE OFFERINGS Inspiration is key to Eldorado Stone’s culture. Every product is designed to evoke a unique sense of space, whether modern, traditional or highly rustic. With 150-plus colors and numerous textures and shapes from which to choose, architects and designers are able to inspire their customers with limitless applications.

MODERN DESIGN The newest of Eldorado’s extensive options, the Modern Collection features 34 new colors and 6 new profiles. Developed to accentuate contemporary `iĂƒ } Ăƒ] ĂŒ iĂƒi ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ ÂŤ> Ă€ Ă€iw i` V Ă€ Ăœ ĂŒ V i> iĂƒ ĂŒ L i ` Ă€ V ĂŒĂ€>ĂƒĂŒ with neighboring elements. Eldorado Stone’s philosophy creates authentic architectural products that transform spaces through color and texture.

ARTISANAL CRAFTSMANSHIP Eldorado Stone products are handcrafted through a detail-oriented, laborintensive process. Each stone is hand-painted by master artisans, infusing multiple layers of color to the stone’s unique textured surface to create a highly authentic appearance.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

Luxe Interiors + Design recently sponsored three panels hosted by the Dallas Architecture Forum. At the first, “Making Fair Park Work,” panelists discussed options for redevelopment of the area and ways to make it a year-round destination. The second, “The Social Initiative,” explored why millennials are more interested in social responsibility, urbanism and healthy living. Lastly, “Remaking the City” was a conversation about urban infill of areas such as Oak Cliff, Deep Ellum, Ross Avenue and the Design District. I encourage you to review the Dallas Architecture Forum’s calendar of events. Panels are open to the public and offer great insight into the growth of our city. Finally, Luxe supported ICAA’s lecture and book signing for Americans in Paris: Foundations of America’s Architectural Gilded Age, coauthored by Margot Ellis, which is a story of an influential group of American architecture students who attended the École des Beaux-Arts and went on to design and build many of our nation’s most recognized buildings and monuments. Enjoy the issue!

CONTRIBUTORS

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

JOANNA MCCLURE

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

The images celebrate artistry and success but also document imperfections and mess-ups, giving you a raw look into the world of ceramics. IN HIS WORDS: “The lamp-making process takes time and patience; I try to appeal to both the craftsman and the designer by detailing the process. It’s ultimately the story of what I do and why I do it.”

When did you open? Our design gallery opened this February. We were lucky enough to secure a space adjacent to The Menil Collection in a very special part of Houston. My co-conspirator, Michael Landrum, and I are both design professionals: We became friends after frequent collaborations. We have each curated our own collections of design objects and our like-minded vision seemed to naturally extend to a design gallery space. Tell us about Tienda X. Our design mantra is “skip everything in the middle.” You will find humble raw-pine-plywood architectural components mixed with chiseled marble floors and artist-made figural hardware. The space conveys a sense of exuberant minimalism, which we quite like. On the floor: We are more focused on important or unusual 20th-century modern and contemporary work alongside international antiques, as long as they have a sort of panache. Our edited selection will include pieces by Christopher Kreiling, James Brummett, Warbach, Garza Marfa and our own studio line of commissionable pieces. What makes your space different? We are creating an experience rather than a showroom. We are focused on consistent editing—the idea is based on curation and a general feeling, not about tiny vignettes and showcasing. tiendaequis.com 132 / LUXESOURCE.COM

The Archer Hotel, made famous for its original outpost in New York City, is bringing its deeply personalized hospitality ethos to Austin. The boutique property, containing 171 rooms, will be nestled in the city’s ever-growing, mixed-use development, The Domain. The interiors program, imagined by Kansas-based LK Architecture, will embody “rustic chic,” featuring copious amounts of natural light, outdoor fireplaces, sprawling terraces and a native material palette of limestone and leathers—all unified by a distinctive Texas flair. The guest rooms will feature such amenities as a freestanding soaking tub accompanied by Malin + Goetz products and Frette bathrobes, and whimsical elements like his-and-her slippers and headboards of woven vintage belts. Archer’s playful concept is best displayed via its deck of etiquette cards that serve as an employee handbook, containing social cues and courtesy tips to keep staff, and guests alike, at their most charming. archerhotel.com/austin

Margaret Naeve opened her dream-come-true antiques shop, M. Naeve, nearly 10 years ago. “I have always been excited about investing in Houston’s cultural landscape,” explains Naeve. Her showroom is a trusted source by area design professionals for authentic antique objects and furnishings, curating her offerings from places like France, Belgium, Sweden and New York. What began as a small boutique grew into Naeve’s realization of her passion for interior design. “For me, interior design is not a career but a lifestyle,” she explains. “A home is not simply where we live but a feeling.” After relocating to a bigger space, the shop is able to accommodate her ever-growing edit of antiques, matched by contemporary artisan finds, and her new custom upholstery line. “We are working with some incredible American-made lines with exclusive offerings in the Texas market,” says Naeve regarding her assemblage, which now includes cult-favorite Egg Collective in a first extension outside of its New York studio. We sat down with the Houston native to get the scoop on the city’s best. mnaeve.com 2:30 p.m. Just around the corner is a gem of a shop called Saint Cloud. Ask for Cecilia and Julie—they are always getting new home décor and accessories, and you never know when they’ll have something in the back that you can’t live without. If you have time, visit the bookstore or the awe-inspiring Rothko Chapel next door. 6 p.m. If you need a little pampering, drop by the chic Studio A Salon and get a

blowout from David. He will keep you looking fresh for the rest of the evening. 6:30 p.m. It’s about time for wine! 13 Celsius is my favorite spot to enjoy a glass of vino. The lighting and the space are near perfection, and the staff really knows their stuff. 8 p.m. For dinner, make a reservation at Armandos—you can’t leave Houston without some decent Mexican food. If you go on a Thursday, the restaurant turns into one of Houston’s best dance floors. Expect to disco into morning.

to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS SIGHTUNSEEN.COM

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

PHOTOS: LISA COHEN.

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 180 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

SET THE TONE SERENA & LILY

No dinner party is complete without pretty table linens. Fine textiles can transform a table from casual to formal and back again, adding an element of the tailored and well-planned to even the most impromptu gathering. Here, Serena & Lily’s Jewel napkin joins the Chatham napkin and runner and the brand’s raffia placemat and Cove rattan lantern in a dreamy coastal-inspired tablescape. serenaandlily.com 184 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

GREEN SCENE As summer descends, more than just perennials are coming to life again: With the longer days and warmer weather, homes across the country are beginning to bloom, unfurling out into handsome outdoor spaces and onto beautifully manicured lawns. It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. On the following pages, go green with some of the season’s prettiest outdoor living spaces.

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

Nothing says all are welcome like a disappearing wall that invites the outdoors in. THRILL OF THE

CHAISE

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

TAKE SHELTER

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

Acclaimed textile and rug designer Angela Adams’ collaboration with outdoor furnishings manufacturer Weatherend Estate Furniture exemplifies all the fun and lively spirit of her other endeavors. Designed in conjunction with her husband, Sherwood Hamill, the pieces, such as the dining chair shown here, bring a youthful perspective to Weatherend’s many classic, traditional offerings. angelaadams.com; weatherend.com

HEDGE YOUR BETS

What truly makes outdoor spaces exceptional isn’t just natural beauty; though, it’s hard to think of a more serene scene than a private pool secreted away behind extra-tall hedges, like in this handsome setting designed by Los Angeles’ Schuyler Samperton. Instead, it’s the combination of beauty and function (think no prying eyes to ogle that cute two-piece while you’re taking a dip) that keeps inhabitants and visitors alike coming back. samperton.com

An expert in the outdoor living industry, Thevenot points to cohesion as a key to successful alfresco design. “Every project should be a reflection of the existing architecture and the homeowner’s lifestyle,” Thevenot explains. “All of our exterior designs start after we have had a chance to study the existing architecture, the environment and how the client lives, relaxes and plays outdoors.”

TIPS + TECHNIQUES Work with professionals who have a proven record of high-quality projects and attention to detail. For low-maintenance gardens, use native plant materials and discuss sustainable design techniques with your landscape architect or designer. Water runoff and permeable materials continue to be a focus for many municipalities. Paver options are growing and there are some very cool materials that are beautiful and permeable. Protect your investment! Clean, protect and seal your outdoor hardscapes seasonally. Treat your outdoors like they are your indoors and keep them looking amazing for generations to come. DDLA DESIGN At DDLA Design, the goal is to create modern and inventive landscape designs that enhance the lifestyles of their inhabitants. Led by principals Lance Dickinson and Todd Duguid, the firm has completed many exceptional projects in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as select projects across Texas, the United States and Canada. Of their creative process, Dickinson says, “We try to keep the idea faucet open to our clients from the start, establishing a collaborative dialogue with them to help create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, responsive to the site, practical and individual to the homeowner.” Asked to further describe the qualities that make an ideal open-air space, Duguid points to two key factors. “A well-designed outdoor space should have an explicit purpose while reflecting the client’s individual style,” Duguid says. “We want it to be not only integrated into the overall flow of the design, but also inviting to both the residents and guests. The space should draw you into the outdoors and provide the environment and personal comforts to keep you there.”

Identify your personal style, outline your goals, be realistic about your budget and enjoy collaborating with your landscape architect.

OUTDOOR LIVING

TODAY’S OUTDOOR SPACE: A CONVERSATION WITH LANCE DICKINSON AND TODD DUGUID What is inspiring you now? We love the residential trend toward transitional and modern homes. It’s like fresh air flowing into the room. As designers, it enables us to stretch our concepts and ideas, integrating new technologies and different materials into the garden. How have things changed in your industry in the past 10 years? Styles have moved toward the modern; environmental responsibility and efficiency have become integral factors; water use and sustainability are essential topics; new technologies and materials have been introduced; and fiscal accountability and maintenance costs are much more prominent—all of which have strengthened our industry. How important is it to have a cohesive style throughout an outdoor space? Important, but not essential. The garden is a fun place to break the rules occasionally and try something unique, like a splash of color, a bold texture or an eclectic piece of furniture.

MATTHEW MURREY DESIGN When it comes to designing landscapes and outdoor living spaces, Matthew Murrey Design’s primary goal is to create an experience that “beautifully realizes the client’s vision.” The Dallas-based landscape design firm advises clients against chasing trends, instead guiding them toward a classic approach that evokes contemporary elegance. When defining a homeowner’s style, principal Matthew Murrey aims for “simple, yet bold; understated, yet impactful.” His firm aims to create cohesiveness in all things. According to Murrey, “A well-designed outdoor space should have a strong balance of color, light, form and texture and include finishes and furnishings that complement and extend from the architecture and interior of the home.”

MATTHEW MURREY’S MUST-DOS Discuss your expectations. The most important information one can provide is their expectations, which go beyond wants to encompass budgets, timelines and the level of execution. Talk candidly with your designer. You can never provide too much information to your landscape designer. Whether you think the information is good, bad, critical, opinionated or irrelevant, throw it out there. Make time. Allocate plenty of time to review the plan with your landscape designer and gain a clear understanding of what is being presented. Don’t expect to take in all the information for a multiacre site plan in a one-hour meeting. Ask questions. There are no foolish questions, so do not be afraid to ask. Give feedback. Provide open, honest, clear and concise feedback. Let the designer know exactly how you feel.

A well-designed outdoor space should have a strong balance of color, light, form and texture.

MESA In explaining the philosophy of MESA, their award-winning landscape architecture firm, principals Stan Cowan, Fred Walters, Aaron Duncan and Mary Ellen Cowan all point to a quote from John Ruskin’s The Seven Lamps of Architecture: “Therefore, when we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight, nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for.” This idea, that the creation of the home environment should always include a consideration of its sustainability, is one by which the MESA team lives and works. “Our residential projects tend to be more naturalistic with an underpinning of geometric framework,” Mary Ellen Cowan says. “We stress integrity of materials and take cues from the architecture, natural surroundings and quality of light.” Asked to identify the characteristics of a well-designed outdoor space, Mary Ellen Cowan describes two requirements: it responds thoughtfully to the land, client and architecture, and it fully integrates visual, spatial and ecological experiences. “We engage the home and landscape,” she says.

Color, fragrance, sound and touch delight the senses and evoke an emotional response.

ECO-FRIENDLY + AESTHETICALLY PLEASING

“We need to be water-wise, but using minimal water doesn’t necessarily mean gardens need to look like a desert landscape,” Mary Ellen Cowan says. “I’m excited about designing gardens that look lush but actually require less water. There are many plants that give a soft, lush, green effect without requiring much water.” She goes on to note that MESA has always embraced environmentally friendly living and utilizes locally sourced materials, giving each garden a sense of place and celebrating the native landscape. 1. REHME STEEL WINDOWS & DOORS According to Peter Rehme, residential design is all about the views. The owner of Rehme Steel Windows & Doors advises that homeowners should be able to see their outdoor spaces from the inside. “Don’t think about the outdoor space without considering how the interior view can be enhanced through your project,” he says. “With slim lines and expanses of window, you can actually be a part of the outdoor space from inside and vice versa.” He notes thoughtful selections as key to successfully creating seamless environments, saying, “A pair of bifold doors versus a pair of French doors; a large fixed window with an expanse of glass versus casement windows—you want the selection to be both beautiful and fit the functional needs of your family.”

Big expanses of glass allow the homeowner to enjoy the view, entertain easily and experience open-concept living.

A LEADER IN INNOVATION

“We are excited about the launch of our sliding door line,” Rehme says. “Our sliders allow you to move an entire wall of glass and blend the interior and exterior spaces, while also providing the highly sought-after aesthetic of steel windows.” Rehme is known for its maintenance-free hinge, engineered and produced in its factory in Texas. Because the hinge selflubricates, it will never squeak, grind or wear out.

HOMEGROWN + HIGH QUALITY

When it comes to Rehme Steel Windows & Doors, quality is of the essence. The company achieves its high standards by creating each product here in the United States. “Every single thing is made in America with American steel,” Rehme says. “We’ve tried all the alternatives and, to put it bluntly, we are done wasting our time. American steel and labor guarantees the best every step of the way.” Rehme uses cold-rolled steel, because it is stiffer, straighter and has crisper corners, as well as being more dimensionally accurate.

FRENCH REFRESH WHAT BEGAN AS A SIMPLE DESIGN REQUEST FOR A STATELY EUROPEAN-STYLE MANSE IN HOUSTON BLOSSOMS INTO A COLOR-INFUSED RENOVATION. WRITTEN BY HELEN THOMPSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES SCHRODER PHOTOGRAPHY

This sophisticated home in Houston greets guests with its gracious lot, majestic trees and semicircular drive. Designer Julie Dodson honored the home’s elegant exterior with fun and fresh French-style interiors.

A

fter the birth of their first child, a young Houston couple knew the time had come for them to move. Living in a smaller garden home, they felt the need to look for something a bit more substantial to accommodate their growing family. “We needed a more adult home and began to think about practical things like school systems, a yard and more space for entertaining,” says the wife. An element of sentimentality also factored into the push for a change, with the husband wanting to return to the lush part of Houston that reminded him of his happy childhood. The couple’s search ended with a French-style residence fronted by a semicircular drive and majestic magnolia trees. Built in the late 1990s and originally designed by Sullivan, Henry, Oggero & Associates, the two-story house with flanking one-story wings perfectly suited the couple’s needs. To help create an interior that lived up to the home’s elegant architecture, the couple enlisted designer Julie Dodson, whose imaginative interpretations of European flair have generated a fan base of admirers. “I love to design in the French style, but in fun and fresh ways,” says Dodson of her signature style and chic portfolio of work that attracted the couple’s attention. Adds the wife: “It’s very dramatic but in a quiet way.” In the beginning, the couple expressed their goal of simply just wanting to replace the floors, although a new paint job would also be in order. Dodson went to work swapping out the scoredconcrete flooring downstairs with smoked-French-oak planks that “lend a sense of history and old-world French

charm to the house,” she says. Turning her attention to the paint, Dodson concocted a plan to “use white throughout but to inject it with pops of blue, coral and lilac, using black as an accent,” she says. The result is a breezy, up-to-date vibe that reflects the couple’s aesthetic. “They’re really cool people,” Dodson says, referring to the music-loving pair who are big Led Zeppelin buffs. These updates, however, had the unexpected effect of the couple reassessing their original goal. “That’s when things started to snowball,” says the wife. Dodson adds: “They saw how fresh the house was starting to look, but were also seeing how things like the older oiledbrass doorknobs weren’t matching the crisp white walls and new floors.” The homeowners realized that if they wanted to make significant changes, now was the time. Dodson was ready for the challenge, assuming the role of project manager in addition to designer. “Ultimately,

nothing in this house was untouched,” she says. Even the clients’ furniture had to go. “We decided to get rid of everything and start over,” says the wife. Dodson set the stage in the foyer with a console from Cuff Home in Los Angeles, a B Kelley Antiques mirror from the Marburger Farm Antique Show and stools from Edit. In the kitchen, the design overhaul included installing custom antiqued cabinetry and granite countertops and punching out a niche in a wall, where Dodson nudged in a blue-painted cabinet from Joyce Horn Antiques. She also took the necessary steps to make the eating and living spaces at the back of the house family-friendly for everyone, dogs included. The designer selected an off-white indooroutdoor fabric for the skirted benches at the breakfast table, for example, and covered a white sofa in the family room in indoor-outdoor fabric, as well—in the event one of the family’s two Labrador retrievers chooses to use it as a napping spot.

Accommodating the homeowners’ request for a more adult home, Dodson rose to the occasion in the formal living and dining rooms. “I envisioned the living room as a place where my clients can entertain and sit with friends for an after-dinner cocktail,” Dodson says. She anchored the area with a hand-knotted antique rug and accessorized the space with pink and lilac pillows to reflect the dreamy hues in a painting just opposite; light emanates from silver lamps on white-lacquered side tables. “I think of lighting as jewelry for a home,” says Dodson, who also added gold lamps to the dining room, which she visualized as a Parisian circus. “I upholstered the walls in linen to create a tent-like feeling,” she explains. Overhead, the designer swathed the ceiling in a shimmery striped-silk fabric.

Color also invigorates the master bedroom, which Dodson made plush with lavender cotton-velvet upholstery on the chairs and a white tufted-twill headboard. She then hung antique pink-and-lavender screens on the wall and cushioned the floor with wall-to-wall white carpet to create a serene space that serves as a quintessential retreat, but with a little extra oomph. Throughout their home, this Houston couple has indeed come a long way from their original goal, and they are enjoying a colorful transformation that enhances their lives and matches their playful personality. “We were willing to try new things,” the wife says. “Now, our home feels very light and clean and has a more sophisticated look, which is exactly what we needed now that we have a family.”

For the family room, The Joseph Company fabricated an ottoman in Kerry Joyce fabric from George Cameron Nash and a sofa in Holly Hunt fabric; a David Iatesta cocktail table from Culp Associates complements the Stark rug, and the floor lamp is from Area. ART & SOUL INFORMED BY BOTH A POET’S WORDS AND HER OWN NOMADIC SPIRIT, AUSTIN ARTIST MEREDITH PARDUE CREATES A BODY OF WORK REFLECTIVE OF HER INTERNAL VISION.

WRITTEN BY MIMI FAUCETT / PHOTOGRAPHY BY WYNN MYERS

Artist Meredith Pardue (right) adds graphite to an abstract painting in her Austin studio, which also showcases a recent encaustic painting (opposite) and a mixed-media piece featuring paint lids (bottom right). Works entitled The Body Electric I and II (previous pages) are part of a diptych highlighting Pardue’s exhibit at Houston’s Laura Rathe Fine Art.

I

strive to create and share beauty,” says Austin-based studio artist Meredith Pardue, known for her colorful exploration of botanical shapes and a compelling, almost melodic, sense of form and composition. “For me, painting is as innate a function as dancing would be for a dancer.” After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Pardue followed this innate compulsion around the country—from New York, to Portland, to her home state of Louisiana, and to and from Texas, where this mother-of-two now happily resides. Those self-proclaimed “gypsy years” opened her mind and polished her singular sense of purpose as an artist. Pardue believes her own art is about the physical process of painting, as opposed to a cerebral idea, and her canvases strike a delicate balance between chaotic and controlled mark making. What a viewer might describe as negative space—the catalyst to harmonious tension in Pardue’s work—is actually the last thing that goes into a painting. The artist says, “If there is a narrative to my pieces, it’s found in that relationship between the so-called positive and negative space.” Using mediums such as marble dust, charcoal and oil bars—pastel-like tubes of the sludge recovered during paint making—Pardue

experiments with mixed media and encaustic paints. While she began her career as a figure painter, “soon the figure became irrelevant to the marks I was making,” explains the artist, who defines her work as lyrical abstraction. And, although her large-scale, multidimensional pieces may recall images of biological discovery, nature remains merely a point of departure in her work. Pardue recently completed an exhibit for Houston’s Laura Rathe Fine Art, entitled “The Body Electric” and inspired by Walt Whitman’s “I Sing the Body Electric.” Like a poet, but with paint rather than words, the artist strives to scratch below the surface of her work’s outward beauty to explore something much deeper and more meaningful. “If the body is a means to the soul, then the object of art is a means to the spirit of that work,” she says. “This body of work is a celebration of that beautiful, tactile idea.”

BALANCING ACT CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY ELEMENTS STRIKE A GRACEFUL NOTE IN A LIGHT AND AIRY DALLAS HOUSE FOR A COUPLE LOOKING TO DOWNSIZE.

T

o say designer Cynthia Collins and her client began on the same page would be an understatement. In early discussions about a new home in Dallas for the client and her husband, “We had a lot of the same ideas,” says Collins, “and were reading each other from the beginning.” They came to one of their first meetings toting similar color and fabric choices and had “both clipped several of the same photos from magazines,” recalls the wife. Kismet also seemed to be at play when, during a meeting with architect David Stocker, Collins showed him photos of houses she liked. “He pointed to one and said, ‘That’s one of my projects,’ ” she remembers. Add to the mix builder Clay Snelling, landscape architect Bill Bauer of The Garden Design Studio and landscape installer Britt Johnson of Britton & Associates, and the stage was set.

Architecturally, the clients envisioned a smaller yet brighter and airier house blending contemporary and traditional elements. “We wanted a lot of light,” says the wife. “We also wanted to downsize and have everything we need to live on the first floor.” Stocker, working with associate Philip Pitzer, opted for a contemporary riff on classic Georgian architecture. “Often with Georgian architecture, you get a kind of a box with layers creating a dark middle,” he explains. “This home is kind of a stretched Georgian, so you can see through fairly easily.” Stocker relied on a restrained palette, choosing slate for the roof and painted brick for the exterior, another nod in the Georgian direction. The brick provides subtle texture, allowing shadow to play across the façade. In keeping with the home’s pared-down classicism, simple columns

Opposite: Chinoiserie-inflected Clarence House fabric from Culp Associates on a pair of armchairs echoes the owners’ collection of famille rose china. flank the entrance. “Stripping them down brought us to more contemporary detailing,” he says. “Sometimes mixing elements can make it seem like they are duking it out. You have to find a commonality to them.” The graceful balance struck by the architecture yielded ideal conditions for similar interiors. “The house reads more contemporary, helping give the couple’s art more of an edge and making the timeless pieces look fresher,” says Collins, “but the traditional moldings and mantels suit the antiques.” Coming from a more traditional house, the homeowners were ready for a little bit more fun. To achieve this, Collins repurposed much of the family’s existing furniture—in addition to incorporating new finds and custom pieces—including reupholstering a pair of custom chairs in the living room in a bold chinoiserie pattern that

echoes the wife’s Rose Medallion china collection. Collins and her senior design associate, Rachel Richardson, also mixed in vintage pieces from the 1940s through the ’70s. “Sometimes it takes a combination of periods to achieve the right mix,” notes Collins. In the entrance hall, for example, the designer paired a ’40s Italian glass-and-brass piece she discovered in Paris with an antique Oushak carpet that lends visual heft to the space with its strong colors. An appealing tension between old and new also exists in the kitchen, where a beamed ceiling plays off cabinetry inlaid with stainless steel. “We started with a very flat-front design, but using the inlay meant we could have more interest and detailing,” Collins says. This posed a new challenge for Snelling. “It’s always fun to do something you’ve never done,” he says. The undertaking included

two separate subcontractors as well as a meticulous paint job. Also tricky were the corner windows in the kitchen, study and master bathroom, which required extra structural support. “The outside corner of a house has a large structural load, and to have a window in this area requires structural steel beams and columns,” Snelling explains. The home sits on more than an acre of land, so perfecting the landscape was paramount. “Sometimes just a few moves can make the difference, but those can be lost on a big lot,” says Bauer, who worked to ensure the scale of the gardens was appropriate for the size of the lot and devised an entry sequence leading from the front of the property to the front door. “It’s an open green space that’s inviting and easy to walk through,” he says. The back is equally simplistic, although the dual-level pool with a waterfall

element provides a dramatic focal point. For the plantings, white knockout roses and azaleas punctuate the intense greens of the boxwood, hawthorn, magnolias and hollies. Johnson adds, “The homeowners wanted a landscape that is low-maintenance, clean and contemporary.” With a landscape ideal for the family’s dogs and a home scaled to perfection for the couple, the wife marvels at the ease with which everything came together. “The whole team was incredible,” she says. “David listened, and Cynthia knew exactly what I wanted. We have sunshine in the front. We’ve got the loggia in the back. And the light is incredible. It really is a feel-good home.” And it’s not surprising that a project that began with a series of coincidences and a meeting of design minds resulted in a home impeccably suited to its owners. As they say, some things are just meant to be.

Landscape architect Bill Bauer of The Garden Design Studio devised a plan for the property that involved strong yet simple gestures. A crisp path of pavers makes for a graceful sequence leading from a patio outside the living room. Outdoor furnishings include an RH sofa, lounge chairs and dining chairs; a custom dining table; garden stools from Laura Lee Clark and custom Perennials pillows.

Stocker’s contemporary take on classic Georgian architecture includes a colonnade composed of columns with pared-down capitals and a façade in white-painted brick. Most of the rooms receive light from multiple exposures. Britt Johnson of Britton & Associates handled the landscape installation and was a collaborator throughout the landscape design and plant selection process.

Designer Zac Zamora (pictured opposite with dog Ace and a press brake metal-bending machine) works out of his Austin studio; his designs include a cast-stone nesting vessel and a mild-steel hex stand (previous pages, left). A resident African spurred tortoise (bottom) mingles with more of Zamora’s creations.

Z

ac Zamora, founder of Austin-based Variance Design, has had a lifelong fascination with living systems and the natural world. Combine this with his love of drawing and shaping materials with his hands, and it’s no surprise he became a biologist, gardener and designer of living installations found in prominent institutions like the San Diego Zoo as well as in private collections. “Nature is the blueprint,” he explains. “It inspires me to create things that are exciting to my spirit.” In addition to verdant living systems, including vertical gardens and reptile habitats with realistic hand-sculpted stone walls and tree buttress roots, Zamora also designs modern vessels, ranging in scale from a cast-stone planter the size of a tennis ball to an 8-foot-tall white aluminum planter—one of six bolted together in a zigzag pattern at a private residence. “Building habitats for plants and animals is my passion,” Zamora explains, “but minimalistic design, architecture and art also inspire me.” The multifaceted designer began producing such pieces after a fruitless search for modern planters to contrast the cacti, oak trees and other organic forms on his naturalistic 3-acre property in Austin. “I began creating molds out of leftover fiberglass and rubber, and then started casting those molds in concrete,” Zamora says. He continues to follow a similarly creative process, starting with a prototype that he then prefers to edit in a more organic and experimental than structured way. Zamora has since incorporated metal into his repertoire: The first floor of his two-story studio is equipped with a CNC plasma cutting machine, welding equipment and other tools that allow him to experiment with imaginative new constructs. One example is a giant wave pendulum, which Zamora calls a “kinetic sculpture,” featuring a series of steel spheres and showcasing the designer’s custom metal handiwork. While Zamora isn’t sure what he’ll be inspired to create next, he’s more than happy to go with the flow and see where it takes him. “If I knew the exact path, I probably wouldn’t want to take it,” says Zamora, who charts new directions every day. “As long as I’m creating something new and exciting, I feel like I’m on track.”

C

urb appeal reigns supreme in Houston’s Heights neighborhood, where grand Victorians and Craftsman-style bungalows edge idyllic tree-lined streets. Most are zoned as historic, save for a pocket of homes where designer Marie Flanigan and her husband, Joe, bought a then-quirky Craftsman. “It was basically a small bungalow surrounded by much grander residences,” says Marie. “Yet it was on this big, beautiful, light-filled corner lot.” With sensitive architectural updates and a little more square footage in the right places, the Flanigans knew it could be a stunner. “The neighborhood was booming, and the project was perfect for our skills,” says Marie, who earned a

degree in architecture from Texas A&M University and immediately saw the bungalow’s potential. Best of all, it wasn’t encumbered by strict historic preservation guidelines, allowing more freedom to make decisions such as changing the façade and installing energy-efficient windows. Marie pictured the cottage with a full-width front porch, double-gable roof, and Craftsman-style architectural features both outside and indoors, as well as an airy floor plan accommodating a much larger kitchen and master suite. The plans she drafted reflected that vision, right down to astutely placed interior columns and coffered ceilings, which define activity areas in the newly opened and streamlined layout while unifying them with analogous details. “The kitchen and dining areas live within one

large space, but the kitchen’s coffered ceiling clearly outlines the fact that it serves as a unique and individual space within that larger context,” Marie notes. The couple joined forces with builder Hernan Vargas to help transform the bungalow. A series of hurdles, however, created more work than anticipated. First, they needed to move the home back from the street in order to gain room to expand. “To bump the footprint out a bit in every direction, we had to pick the house up and move it about 3 feet to the east and away from the street to respect the city’s setback code,” Vargas explains. “They lifted the house onto railroad ties and used hydraulic jacks to slide it over.” Then, another hurdle appeared. “To accommodate the home’s longer and broader footprint, we had to raise the roof,” Vargas adds. “It was the most difficult structural accommodation we made, but also the most significant. It changed the façade and the nature of every room inside—all for the better.”

The exterior is now statelier, while interior rooms seem larger thanks to taller ceilings. Although they originally planned to sell the house, it began to feel like home when Joe and his father laid the brick foundation for the porch columns. “That’s when I knew the house had to be ours,” Marie says. “The project was such a family affair, and I’d just found out I was pregnant, so I figured it was meant to be.” In hindsight, deciding to keep the home later in the process made the earlier decisions easier. “We were about halfway through the project, and it was too late to change anything,” the designer says. “I was so glad I didn’t know sooner, because I made smart, fast decisions. When a home is yours, you agonize over every detail.” Furnishing the home was less clear-cut, considering Marie and Joe have differing tastes. “I appreciate contemporary elements, and Joe prefers traditional elements, but we both prefer a combination of multiple styles,” says Marie,

who channeled her inner mix-master with a layered blend of pieces old, new and somewhere in-between. “A simple set of rules prevailed: We only used things we both love, that are super-comfortable, and that are family-friendly and cleanable.” An oak-framed armchair in the living room “could be from the 1940s or now,” the designer explains. She paired the time-defying piece with a sleek oak bench with a woven seat, a coffee table-turned-toy-storage chest upholstered in waxed leather, and a newly re-covered sofa the couple bought as newlyweds. Mixed styles grace every room. In the kitchen, now four times larger, classic recessed-paneled cabinets enjoy a dose of Craftsman styling from the coffered ceiling that also defines the space, while wainscoting topped with dentil molding gives the contiguous dining area definition and a period demeanor. In the study, a campaign desk, which Marie designed after seeing a sleek new version, is made from rustic oak with an antiqued-brass frame for a more organic attitude, while a sleek white-lacquered console, also Marie’s design, has an earthy wood frame. “They were designed to be sleek and streamlined in structure and then finished in a rich combination of both luxurious and rustic materials,” Marie explains. Ultimately, Marie believes it’s the details that make a project, and in this case, it was the detail of raising the roof that had the most impact. “Now, we have a huge unfinished attic we didn’t expect. But we don’t need any more space,” she says, laughing, “yet.” The family may not yet need the additional space, but they are certainly enjoying the home’s stunning new façade and, perhaps most of all, its intact historic charm. Says Marie: “Rather than demolish the home, we opted to restore it, unveiling the natural beauty that lives within.”

Right: Marie preserved the central foyer as the home’s axis point; the wood console is from RH. The Joseph Company fabricated the custom bench, topped with a slipcover of indoor-outdoor Perennials linen from David Sutherland. Above the console, the oil painting by Mary H. Case is from Area; the Visual Comfort & Co. lamp is from Circa Lighting. Opposite, clockwise from top left: A tray from Area displays perfume in the master bathroom; a crewel embroidery pillow graces the guest room; an antique French jug lamp from Brown appears in the master suite; and a console from Dovetail Furniture, paired with a Lee Industries chaise from John Brooks, holds a Circa Lighting lamp used for reading in the master bedroom.

Above: The home’s bathrooms were enlarged and outfitted with highefficiency custom cabinetry designed by Marie and executed by SE Construction. Carrara marble from Daltile clads the countertops and floors in the master bathroom, while Pottery Barn sconces provide task lighting. Built-in mirrors feature Craftsman-style woodworking details. Left: Marie made the master bedroom a double-duty space with a semi-partitioned reading alcove. An antique Oushak rug from Creative Flooring adds a dose of pattern against the RH nightstands, an Aidan Gray headboard from Spaces for Home, a Christopher Guy stool, and Home Treasures bedding from Plush Home. Rosemary Drapery fabricated window treatments with linen from Arabel Fabrics in Miami.

PITTET ARCHITECTURALS “The combination of our deep appreciation for true architectural antiques and our client’s vision intertwined together is the driving force behind Pittet Architecturals,” says architectural showroom manager Tim Alexander. Pittet Architecturals is one of the largest and most highly sought-after shops providing exquisite architectural elements in the country. With an inventory that has evolved to include a variety of raw materials and rare antiques, professionals and homeowners alike have come to count on the company for its wide array of authentic reclaimed European floors, doors, garden accessories and lighting, as well as stone fountains and mantels. “Our next endeavor is to expand our selection of reclaimed flooring. We presently offer antique reclaimed French oak, stone and terra cotta from all over Europe,” Alexander explains. “We are now able to include reclaimed marble, Belgian black stone, antique brick and the ability to fabricate stair treads from antique materials to suit your design.” While each project is ignited by the client’s imagination, it is the collaborative effort of everyone involved that truly defines a successful project. “Our business model involves harvesting antique materials from all around the Mediterranean coast; some of these are repurposed in ways not originally intended,” Alexander says. “We look forward to collaborating with the architect, designer and client in an effort to create a project with a sense of history. It is a blend of our woodworking, stone carving and relentless pursuit of authentic antique materials that creates the perfect details for any size project. We welcome the opportunity to be a part of the history of your home.”

TOP: With more than 100 sizes and styles on display, Pittet Architecturals showroom can accommodate any fountain installation, from quaint courtyards to park-sized estates. BOTTOM: Pittet Architecturals sources a variety of limestone, marble and terra-cotta elements from around the world.

AS K T HE EXPE RT What do you regard as the greatest success in your career to date? Specific projects do not stand out as much as the fact that so many professionals entrust us with both their clients and projects. We take pride in providing the architectural antiques that add character to a home. What are your favorite styles to work on and why? While I do appreciate the emphasis on architectural symmetry and proportion of the Renaissance era, Gothic European architecture provides a strong sense of history and character in a project. Is your work easily recognizable? Why or why not? We take great pride in the craftsmanship of woodworking and the masonry skills we have acquired. We have spent thousands of hours refining our techniques, which can be experienced upon entering our showroom.

AS K T HE EXPE RT What are the key influences in your work today? There are three: history, which is my passion; nature, which fills my soul; and the eternal pursuit of beauty in any way.

Verona Martinez Founder and CEO 2050 North Stemmons Freeway, Showroom 11010 Dallas, Texas 469.353.9476 info@veronaprive.com veronaprive.com

VERONA PRIVE MAISON Leveraging more than a decade’s worth of experience in the fashion industry, Verona Martinez set out to expand her acclaimed Verona Prive label into the home furnishings industry. Thus, Verona Prive Maison was born. “With a fashion designing career, I have always been involved with fabrics, materials and natural rocks,” Martinez explains. “The desire to create timeless pieces with natural components led me to seek out a different way of expressing myself.” Initially specializing in high-end pillows and accessories, the brand has grown to encompass a 7,000-squarefoot showroom located in the Dallas Market Center offering everything from antiques and decorative accessories to furniture and window treatments. The vast array of offerings has made Verona Prive Maison a go-to destination for designers who are seeking both inspiration and distinction in their designs. “Our clientele come to explore a vast amount of possibilities,” Martinez says. “Renowned and experienced designers come to our company to materialize their ideas. Stores find exclusive merchandise to sell to the most exigent customers.” With Martinez’s creative instincts at the helm, the brand continues to grow and expand its offerings. “My favorite part is traveling the world in search of inspiration, learning about history while I am creating a new collection,” she says. “In the creative process, inspirations flourish while I am selecting eclectic materials, teaching me a lesson that can change my ideas into totally different, functional art.” In addition to a partnership with a mine to source a unique onyx for sculptures, natural art, lighting and dinnerware, there is much more on the horizon for Verona Prive Maison. “I am currently in collaboration with a lighting manufacturer to create a private-label carved lighting collection,” Martinez reveals.

TOP: Hand-carved from one rock, these solid onyx plates make a statement in any room. BOTTOM: Add an ultramodern touch with this genuine Mongolian lamb chair and ottoman, which are naturally dyed.

What are your favorite styles to work on and why? I enjoy eclectic styles that encompass the combination of several influences in the same piece of furniture to convert it into a transitional piece of art. What would be your dream creative project? I would love to create an iconic furniture museum releasing a story of generations through the art of comfort.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS

AS K T HE EXPE RT What is inspiring you now? I believe the next era of design will be based on the further understanding of how to implement green design and technology into high-end spaces.

Alana Villanueva President and Principal Designer 135 Pittsburg Street, Suite A3 Dallas, Texas 214.934.7374 alana@avidassoc.com avidassoc.com

AVID ASSOCIATES Once a small firm with founder Alana Villanueva as its singular designer, AVID Associates is today home to an award-winning group of designers and support staff who combine professionalism, an old-fashioned work ethic and modern-day techniques and technologies to achieve each client’s vision. With projects ranging from a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired lakefront home to renovations utilizing materials not typically seen in a residential setting, the firm has become adept at designing in every style, from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. For Villanueva, it’s all about the client. “I have always felt a pull to further my understanding of the relationships between people and spaces,” she says. “Getting to know the client is by far the most important. Without this, the project can’t possibly be a reflection of the client, only the designer. This is why our portfolio of projects is so varied.” Working with clients from the ground up, AVID Associates provides detailed hand sketches, CAD renderings and elevations to articulate conceptual ideas in a meaningful way. The firm designs everything from millwork and cabinetry to stone, tile and ceiling treatments, making it possible to perfectly integrate every detail in a space. Asked to define a successful project, Villanueva points to timelessness and client satisfaction. “A successful project is one in which the design aesthetic does not dissolve with the test of time,” she says. “I believe in creating classic interiors for a modern world. Each project brings satisfaction and a sense of success when our clients enter a new environment we have helped them create, and you can see the joy and energy they are channeling in that new space.”

RIGHT: Geometric forms take center stage in this formal powder room, designed for a spec home. A marble sink on a chrome pedestal creates openness while the pendants and mirror add a touch of whimsy.

What do you strive to create when you’re working on a project? What’s most important to you? A sense of balance and proportion is always paramount. You can have the best furnishings and art in the world, but if the scale or proportion is even slightly off, it’s a deal breaker. How do you define luxury? The greatest luxury is time. By implementing our clients’ goals in a manner that is conscientious of their lifestyle and budget, we can save them time and money while helping them move the project along in a timely manner.

AS K T HE EXPE RT What do you like most about your job? It requires full-throttle creativity. My mind is always working and problem solving.

Suzan Davidson Principal Designer 1202 North Riverfront Boulevard Dallas, Texas 214.202.5457 suzan@suzandavidsondesigns.com suzandavidsondesigns.com

SUZAN DAVIDSON DESIGN DESIGNS “My firm has been built on old-fashioned word-of-mouth,” Suzan Davidson says. The principal designer of her namesake firm, Suzan Davidson Designs, has known that creating beautiful interiors was her mission and desire since she started following her father on his architectural projects as a child. Asked to define a successful project, Davidson points to three achievements. “The first is that the client feels the space is tailored to their needs and personality,” she says. “The second is that the creative process was collaborative and clear. The third is that the client was pushed a little outside their comfort zone in order to deliver something extra that surprises them. I often hear, ‘I didn’t even know I wanted this, but now it’s my favorite thing about the design.’ ” Employing a creative process that organically grows through an understanding of and relationship with her clients, Davidson’s favorite part is interpreting the homeowner’s ideas into curated, tangible environments. It should come as no surprise then that she points to people as her primary inspiration. “Every family is so unique and I like to know how they interact with their surroundings,” she says. “If my clients are clear with me about the inner workings of their family patterns, then I am able to better deliver a design that enhances their experience of the space and each other.” Davidson goes on to note that nature also plays a role, saying, “My clients frequently want to transform a favorite outer landscape into an inner one.” With a penchant for mixing clean lines and a client’s personal trinkets and treasures, Davidson’s primary aim is to give each home a sense of having been developed over time. “My process is such a collaborative one that my final product is a cohesive reflection of my client’s sense of self,” she says. “Each of my clients is different, so the spaces follow suit.”

TOP: A pair of French country barstools, owned by the client, ties the old in with the new. BOTTOM: This sage and French mint striped wallcovering from Farrow & Ball unites rooms. A reclaimed chandelier from Again & Again brings glamour to classic furniture.

How would you describe your clientele? They usually know what they want, but are unsure how to make it happen. They choose me because they feel I “get” them. They know I am intuitive, but also a meticulous planner and can deliver their dream space. How do you define luxury? Luxury is when you are in complete harmony with your space. Every object, every vignette and the overall atmosphere speak to you.

MEET THE EDITOR

On February 18, Sarah Walsh Wange, Texas publisher of Luxe Interiors + Design, hosted a party honoring Paulette Pearson, Luxe’s new Texas features editor covering the Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin/Hill Country and Houston editions. The celebration was hosted at Harwood International’s new residential tower, Bleu Ciel, where Luxe clients were excited to meet Pearson and discuss trends and projects currently happening in the local design scene.

INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
