Home is Where the Art is
Designer Jiun Ho brings together interests in culture, travel, food and art to create soulful spaces that feel like home W O N D E R + WA N D E R Where do designers find their inspiration? The Malaysian-born designer Jiun Ho looks nowhere less than to the whole wide world. “My parents saved every penny so they could travel, and they instilled that same sense of adventure in me,” says Jiun, who has visited more than 100 countries. A global menagerie of influences informs all facets of his design from interiors and furniture to lighting and accessories. “An interior space only becomes warm and inviting when it reflects the passions of the people who live there,” Jiun says. His own San Francisco studio, a space he calls Jiun Ho de Jia (above and inset), meaning the “House of Jiun Ho” in Chinese, is where Jiun brings home his far-flung inspirations and exquisite souvenirs. “The space is part gallery, event space and atelier. It’s really my creative laboratory,” he says.
A d verti s em ent
DESIGN MIND From scaling the peaks of the Andes to exploring the chateaus of the Loire and the antique shops of Bangkok, Jiun’s design brings together vast and disparate influences. The work’s unifying factors are deliberate craftsmanship and meticulous detailing. In Jiun’s hands, the solid brass rivets of the Cordoba chair (left) double as poetic accents. A handsewn top-stitched detail on the Colina sofa (below with the Ulu cocktail table) provides the finishing touch, giving a nod to the world of couture fashion.
“An interior space only becomes warm and inviting when it reflects the passions of the people who live there.”
NO PLACE LIKE HOME Jiun’s passion for travel, food and culture has brought him a wide range of projects from the blissful Revel Spa to the distinctive Two Michelin Star restaurant Saison (left, middle) and a bevy of luxury residences (left, below). To enliven each of these unique spaces, Jiun scours the globe to uncover rare sources and find one-of-a-kind items or fashions custom work. “From factory to finished product, I am totally focused on high-quality and detail. Sometimes even the tiniest element of a design can make or break the experience,” says Jiun, who takes immense pride in the fine quality of his pieces. Hallmarks of Jiun’s approach include textures against clean lines, rich dark woods against simple fabrics, and pure shapes and forms that are both challenging and inviting. Above all, Jiun’s graceful interiors make space for friendship, food, entertaining and celebration. “The key is to create that easy feeling of home wherever you are in the world,” he says.

UPPING THE ANTE
MODERN PERSPECTIVE
THE ODYSSEY
MIX & MATCH
ON THE COVER
A young designer breathes new life into a suburban Virginia home whose owners’ tastes had changed dramatically in the years since they bought it.
After a few decades of living traditionally, a Baltimore family makes a clean break with the past, opting instead for the ultimate in midcentury mod.
A designer helps her client forge a new path from an antiquesfilled interior to a more modern mindset in her newly purchased Kalorama penthouse.
Mix a style-minded Canadian childhood with London design and Japanese space planning— and you get a glorious renovation in Cleveland Park.

EDITOR’S LETTER
GOLD LIST
T
his issue, our Gold List is devoted to the great talents of our industry— architects, interior designers, home builders and landscape architects, who are the DNA of our magazine.
The Gold List recognizes these design professionals who have had their work published in our pages. Their projects continue to influence and inspire, ranging from stunning buildings and flourishing residential gardens to rooms curated with attractive objects. More importantly, these masterminds shape structures that become the most personal part of our lives—our homes—and fill them with beauty, creating memories and the basis from which one can dream. Our collective editions span the country, from Los Angeles and the Pacific Northwest to Chicago and New York, with many more points in between. One of the more gratifying aspects of my job is having the opportunity to showcase so much talent, and also getting to know these creative souls on a personal basis. Our Gold List speaks to a cultivated life...one I hope you’ll relish.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
winter. Winter is the season for celebrating the end of one year, and the anticipation of the next. This season also brings me to an exciting chapter in my career as I join the family at Luxe Interiors + Design as the new publisher for the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region. It has been a busy few months. We first partnered with the Somerville Showroom at a Hollywood Glitz & Glam-themed event to unveil the brand-new Artifacts faucet line from Kohler, where guests voted for their favorite Artifacts faucet. We also joined Country Casual to experience the latest designs in garden furniture and toured the Porcelanosa showroom to preview the company’s new eco-friendly surface material. I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events. We hope that you enjoy the new issue of Luxe and encourage you to peruse its pages to discover a bevy of resources that are sure to help you create a perfect home for 2014. Let’s celebrate the New Year with discovering the area’s rich design and cultural tapestry.

Massimo Castagna, founder of Milan firm AD Architettura and the designer behind the streamlined furnishings for Italian brands the likes of Ceccotti and Minotti, feels that design and architecture are essentially two reciprocal fields. Castagna’s most recent collaboration is with Toronto- and New York-based Avenue Road; the featured Cage B étagère is just one of the many new introductions, all of which focus on Castagna’s enduring regard for the use of mixed materials and textures, and strength of craftsmanship. Available in eight standard sizes and fully customizable, Cage B is offered in several finishes and woods, including handburnished blackened steel and eucalyptus, shown here. avenue-road.com

Challenged to orchestrate the design of a Bethesda home set atop the crest of a generously sized sloping property, Washington, D.C.-based architect David Jones went with a classic French country-style layout. “Similar to the original homes of this style, found in France, many of the first-floor rooms open onto terraces,” notes Jones, who says this approach creates a direct link to enjoying the home’s garden and outdoor living spaces. Classic masonry accented by limestone lintels, a cedar-shingled roof and fieldstone walls make up the polished mix of design elements, materializing as an enduring work of residential architecture. davidjonesarchitects.com

For Glen Echo architect Richard Leggin, synthesis—between a property’s design aesthetic and its relationship with its natural surroundings—is a perennial conviction when designing a home. When Leggin began formulating a plan for the featured abode, which sits on a charming Chesapeake Bay peninsula, he chose to envision a façade that “correlates with its coastal environs, as it’s reminiscent of a classic Georgian-style estate, while the interior is more open and modern.” Incorporating an unadorned material palette of handmade brick, traditional siding and a resilient metal roof, Leggin conjured a feeling of permanence. “It’s as if the home has been situated right there for hundreds of years,” he says. richardlegginarchitects.com

By the close of 2015, the Trump Hotel Collection will unveil its most legendary property yet, a luxury resort set within the original premises of the Old Post Office—an opulent Romanesque Revival edifice that dates back to 1899. Leading the preservation and redesign of the Pennsylvania Avenue landmark—which is scheduled to begin this spring—is Washington, D.C.-based architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle, as well as the nationally acclaimed hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates. “We have beautiful bones to work with here,” says Hirsch Bedner Associates’ Betsy Hughes. “The plan is to refresh them and elevate the magnificent space that already exists.” Shown in the rendering below, the nine-story atrium-style Cortile will serve as one of the hotel’s primary gathering spaces, encompassing a palatial main lobby and lounge. beyerblinderbelle.com; hbadesign.com

FRESH INTERPRETATION “Design has the power to break boundaries,” states Hong Kong-based designer and architect Steve Leung, who recently released his first wallpaper collection through the United Kingdom’s Graham & Brown. “I believe cross-field collaborations stimulate innovation.” Inspired by his rich background in Chinese architecture and décor, Leung’s new line is made up of seven distinctive patterns— including Bao, shown, a contemporary take on classic Oriental screens. This elegant assemblage, Leung says, “expresses the beauty of traditional Chinese garden elements with a Western twist.” grahambrown.com

poetic approach When Robert Bristow and Pilar Proffitt designed their first furniture piece in 1999, they didn’t envision a complete line or a full-service interior design and architectural firm to follow. Yet just a year later, the second part of the equation, Poesis Design—from the Greek root word meaning “to make”—came to fruition. Crediting her experience in architecture as the enduring inspiration behind their furniture collection, Proffitt says, “there is a palpable framework underlying each piece.” For the featured brass and glass-topped Ice Cubes table—available through Ralph Pucci—that artfully executed vision is undeniably apparent. poesisdesign.com; ralphpucci.net

This season, London architect, designer and artist Andy Martin’s point of view on furniture design shines with the introduction of Blocks A, B and C. More like treasured objets d’art than seating, Martin says he envisioned these stunning statement pieces to be representative of a stool, side table or coffee table. Cast from translucent and pigmented polyester resin, “the designs were experimental for me,” notes Martin, who says “lightness of form and optical illusion offset the physical heaviness of the pieces and awaken their true beauty.” andymartinstudio.com

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION With a style rooted in reinventing the age-old designs of traditional grandfather clocks and classic case pieces, Joost van Bleiswijk takes a timely retreat from his standard techniques with the introduction of the Construction lamp. Evocative of an exposed electrical pole, the Dutch designer says his fascination with buildings, construction grounds and the industrial nature of his home base of Eindhoven inspired the fixture, which is also offered in white and available through Moooi. projectjoost.com; moooi.com

COASTAL CHARM Presented with an elevated stretch of property in Gibson Island, along the Chesapeake Bay’s western shore, Annapolis-based architect Christopher Frank chose to capitalize on the natural contours of the land and the alluring waterfront views. “While shingle-style in nature, the façade also imbues traditional detailing,” notes Frank, who applied a cedar shake roof, natural fieldstone and an ipe deck for the exterior. A sweeping wraparound balcony adds to the coastal compound’s apparent charm, while an abundance of water-facing windows maximize the amount of natural light. hammondwilson.com

It’s safe to say that connecting a building to its natural environs is a widely acknowledged principle in the realm of architecture. For the design of this Potomac River Valley residence, Bethesda architect Jim Rill took this idea to the next level, choosing to build the home in the midst of a wooded expanse. “Though warm and contemporary in nature, the home doesn’t call attention to itself,” Rill says, rather it blends in with its lush surroundings, extending above the treetops with commanding views of the river. Using a straightforward framework of glass and natural fir wood, as well as rustic oak flooring, Rill’s approach was simplistic, but at the same time, completely captivating. rillarchitects.com

HEIRLOOM QUALITY In the old naval shipyards just a short drive from historic downtown Charleston stands a brick building so unassuming, one might mistake it for a forgotten warehouse. But inside—in an ironic juxtaposition of beauty—custom lighting fixtures are being lovingly pieced together by the highly skilled artisans of The Urban Electric Co. f ever there were a word that described a city so precisely, Charleston’s would most certainly be “charming.” In this town, where weathered cobblestones and pastel row houses all but whisper the stories of a bygone era, it would seem
only appropriate that it be the backdrop for a company making heirloom-quality lighting fixtures the old-fashioned way: at a work bench, by hand. “Take a quick lap around our factory, and you’ll notice there aren’t many machines. It’s a very people-centric process,” says Dave Dawson, founder and owner of The Urban Electric Co. “This is a hand-built business and our artisans are our biggest investment.” Just a decade old, Dawson’s company has not veered from what it initially set out to do. The brass and copper lanterns, sconces and pendants—all built to order—that come out of the South Carolina workshop are still held to an incredibly high standard of excellence. “We define craftsmanship as quality,” says Creative Director Michael Amato. “It’s about the caliber of the materials, the finishes, the execution in manufacturing. Our clients come to us to obsess over the details.” So suffice it to say that in a world of instant gratification, where quick-to-ship, machine-made foreign goods are an ever-growing norm, The Urban Electric Co. is an outlier. “Pride is our heritage. We’re all artists in our own right with a passion for what we’re doing, and we can make anything for anyone,” notes Jeff Peek, a senior master craftsman who’s been with the company over nine years. “Building by hand breathes life into a piece, gives it warmth, character and a genuine human touch. That’s something a machine could never do.” It’s no wonder such product integrity has drawn the discerning eye of some of interior design’s elite; the likes of Darryl Carter, Steven Gambrel and Amanda Nisbet have all fashioned a collection for the company stemming from their desire to collaborate with the brand. “I think we’re all nostalgic for traditional craftsmanship and how things used to be made,” notes Dawson. “People crave that, and I believe that’s what we deliver.”
Thoughtful design along with hours of meticulous craftsmanship goes into every lighting piece created by The Urban Electric Co. The Charleston-based company prides itself on the artisans behind the mostly bench-built process. Though custom fixtures make up a large part of the business, an inventory of over 300 in-house designs, which can be personalized with custom finishes and paint colors, are available for quick shipping.

BESPOKE
Q+A Luxe sits down with Dave Dawson, founder and CEO of innovative lighting brand The Urban Electric Co.
How do you balance speed with craftsmanship? The world is moving faster and people aren’t willing to wait as long for things. But we’re lucky; we have clients that appreciate the care behind our fixtures. Who is the audience of The Urban Electric Co.? We’re looking to work with very selective clients, architects and designers; those who recognize the value that one-of-a-kind lighting, with proportion and scale, can add to a space. Why build local? When we started this business, we felt an American artisan who was engaged in the process and appreciated who the client was, they were going to put more into their craft. At the end of the day, there’s value in that. We couldn’t make the same product in a faceless factory abroad. What defines your brand? All of our lights come with a lifetime guarantee. There is no fine print, no exceptions. We stand firmly behind every piece that comes out of our man-helmed factory.
Will we see furniture or other décor from The Urban Electric Co. in the coming years? It’s just as important to know who you aren’t, so that you can stick to who you are. I don’t want to make a lot of different things only half well; I’d rather do one thing flawlessly. We love lighting, and I think we’ll be doing the same thing in five years, just better. GIVEN THE PROPER DESIGN NARRATIVE, A LIBRARY—NO MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL— CAN BE TRANSFORMED INTO A MASTERPIECE.
ike a book buried amongst a shelf of its literary peers, a library may sometimes be an untapped room in a home. Often thought of as dark, mahogany-clad alcoves, a rich yet modern space can emerge when fashioned with the right details. “Don’t shy away from mixing styles or lightening things up,” says designer Edda Elias, who imagined this library in Lawrence, New York. “Have a sense of whimsy when selecting furniture
and decorative pieces.” Here, traditional wood paneling and an octagonal wood floor echoed in the ceiling opening create the backdrop for sleek pieces arranged for diverse uses. “I wanted to ensure that in each area, there was a feeling of intimacy and comfort.” Two words that surely elicit the very essence of what a library should be.

TEXTILE DESIGNER ZAK PROFERA LOOKS TO CLANDESTINE TURKISH SHOPS, INSTAGRAM CRUSHES AND—WHAT ELSE?—A DANGEROUS COCKTAIL OF INSOMNIA AND EBAY TO FUEL HIS CREATIVE SPIRIT.
TELL US THE STORY BEHIND ZAK+FOX:
I’m always trying to define a narrative and I loved the idea of a boy and his dog traveling together—best friends on adventures, returning with treasures and stories. LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR CURRENT COLLECTION, HAZ:
Haz is Turkish for enchantment—three letters, totally simple yet weighted with meaning. It’s the perfect summary for the sensations you feel in Istanbul. Like the collection, it’s exotic at its core, romantic, but with some grit. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I find myself drawn to things that are a bit unplaceable. I love seeing how design from one culture reflects that of another that may seemingly be worlds apart. PERSONAL VS. DÉCOR STYLE:
Understated, but with fancy sneakers. I like comfort. I like to layer. I think the way I dress myself and my home are not dissimilar. #INSTA-CRUSH:
Melissa Sutton from @PlumCollective is a young collector of 20th-century design and art. She posts a wealth of inspiring images and mixes in her own covetable pieces for sale. DREAM CLIENT:
I’m still waiting for an adventurous spirit to let me tent a room. It’ll happen one day.
TEXTILE DESIGN MUSE:
Jack Lenor Larsen pioneered what we’re all trying to do, but way before any of us were actually doing it. SHOPPING HAVENS:
New York: Espasso in Tribeca; I need a bigger apartment just to fit all the Sergio Rodriguez furniture I dream of buying one day. San Francisco: Coup d’Etat has a wild collection of antiques and reproductions. L.A.: Nicky Kehoe’s NK Shop is the right mix of old and new. London: Jamb, if only to see the superb taxidermy giraffe. Istanbul: A La Turca; you ring a doorbell on a nondescript façade to enter, which makes it feel all the more exclusive. YOUR IDEA OF GASTRONOMIC BLISS:
Ordering the omakase from Sushi Yasuda in New York. I don’t go very often, but that’s only because I don’t want to become numb to the sensation of true happiness UP NEXT FOR YOU:
I’m launching a bespoke line of prints based on my personal collection— hatched from a dangerous cocktail of insomnia and eBay—of antique kimono stencils from the late 1800s. It will be available exclusively through my TriBeCa studio. Zak Profera alongside his trusty business partner Shinji. As senior vice president and creative director at Estée Lauder—the brand her illustrious grandmother founded in 1946—Aerin Lauder has a way with feminine detailing. For her recent lighting collection, she envisioned a 72-piece assemblage of fixtures, many of which are endowed with that sophisticated aesthetic. Here, her Lynn wall light illuminates, its chic floral crystals and lustrous burnished silver base instantly conjuring a bygone era of glamour. Undoubtedly versatile in nature, Lynn could be the crowning accent in the tony boudoir of a 1940s apartment, or function as a classic addition to a contemporary space.
“I’m drawn to adaptable pieces like this wall light, which can function in a very modern or more traditional setting. I can envision it on the ceiling of a small powder room or on either side of a mirror in an entryway.” LILLY BUNN WEEKES | NEW YORK, NY | LILLYBUNN.COM

Upon describing the notion behind this striking new fabric from Parisian textile atelier Pierre Frey, chairman and creative director Patrick Frey explained, “Carriacou was conceived from the idea of a decorative scarf bestowed upon the winning horse at a prestigious race.” Emblazoned on an elegant linen backdrop, the vibrantly hued embroidery summons a dramatic yet playful feel, and would make for a gorgeous accent pillow, upholstery piece or set of drapery panels.

Jonathan Browning says the smooth, continuous curves of a racetrack inspired the concept for his Chamont chandelier. Connecting seamlessly to the fixture’s elegant antique bronze frame is a series of six lead crystal cylinders perched atop the base ever so delicately. Each piece, etched with an intricate hand-carved motif, lends an acute attention to detail. “I was most interested in exploring minimalism,” notes the San Francisco-based designer, who adds that “orchestrating clean lines, a luxurious feel and elegant design elements” were his chief objectives.

John Derian Company and Astier de Villate’s latest collaboration is a delightful departure from the sophisticated ceramic tableware that the two brands have joined forces to create in the past. “This collection is a novel variation from our decorative work,” says John Derian, who was inspired by the opportunity to create serving ware for everyday use. With imagery reminiscent of 19th-century bookplates and ephemera, each of the Paris-made pieces— including the charming Owl platter shown here—would infuse a winter tablescape with a consummate touch of polished whimsy.

Prior to launching her eponymous Seattle design studio and event space, Tamara Codor spent several years studying classical painting. Her unique approach to designing furniture undoubtedly reflects a command of fine art. “My enduring inspiration is to create beautiful compositions and form function into art,” she says. Drawing from the conviction of balancing mass and weightlessness, Codor stacked four individual blackened oak drawers atop an exposed steel and gold-leaf frame to create this arresting dresser, which has materialized as an iconic part of her growing collection.
“The way Codor reimagined a traditional case piece is brilliant; it’s functional, but so clean and elegant. I would line up three of these for maximum effect, but they would also be superb as side tables in a bedroom.” ANNE COYLE | CHICAGO, IL | ANNECOYLEINTERIORS.COM

PREPSTER CHIC
When it comes to fashion I’m a plaid pants and elbow patches kind of girl. This winter I’m seeing a lot of houndstooth, as well—and loving the preppy notes found in J.Crew’s 2014 RTW collection—not only on the runways and in the stores, but also in my studio. As part of my continuing fascination with textiles interpreted into mosaics, New Ravenna’s newest collection is a wild houndstooth design. jcrew.com 2
My friend Kevin O’Brien sells the most wonderful cashmere throws, and I was finally able to experience one for myself this winter when he sent one to us to use as a prop in a photo shoot. I like to bask in the blaze of a fire with some Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey, my white German shepherd Gabby, my family, and now, Kevin’s blanket. I also love his gorgeous pillow selections found at Oliver Dunn. kevinobrienstudio.com

Those unexpected touches, combined with his knack for eyecatching window displays, keep customers returning to his Georgetown shop, Jean Pierre Antiques. “I change my store windows every week,” says Sarfati, who’ll mix a vintage chrome bar cart with a 19th-century Chinese wedding chest. “People are always complimenting me and taking pictures. It’s what draws them in.” The Moroccan-born and French-raised Sarfati has lived in Washington, D.C., for 50 years—much of that as a hairdresser to the likes of Donna Karan and Bianca Jagger. Shoulder problems led to a career change in 2003, and he’s become as keen a predictor of design trends as he was of the perfect coiffure. “Ten years ago, people wanted butcher-block tables and big armoires. Now, there’s a demand for Lucite tables,” says Sarfati. “I love mixing vintage and modern, and I always try to do something with a bit of an edge.” jeanpierreantiques.com; 202.337.1731
ALLURING ANTIQUES
JEAN PIERRE SARFATI I GOT STARTED…
When I first moved to D.C., I would visit the South of France a few times a year. On one particular trip, I fell in love with a 1960 Fiat 500. Since I had to pay for a whole container to ship it back, I figured, why not fill it? I went to the flea market and picked out a few old leather club chairs. That’s how it all started. DREAM COLLABORATION:
I’d love to work with Hugh Newell Jacobsen and Simon Jacobsen, with whom I spend most Thanksgivings and whose architectural office is across the street from my store. GREATEST INFLUENCE:
My mother. She would take what she already had in the house and spin it around and make it something new. She had such vision. She would set up the most elaborate dinners and table settings every weekend. VAN GOGH OR WARHOL:
Matisse. He was so inspired by the fabrics (and the women) of North Africa. TOOLS OF THE TRADE:

“Art is never static,” says Beverly Reynolds, director of Richmond’s Reynolds Gallery. “It keeps me passionate about new ideas and approaches to observing the contemporary world.” Opposite: Reynolds is a fan of architect Steven Holl; shown is his design of the Swiss ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C.
Richmond may not be best known for its bustling art scene, but you wouldn’t guess it walking through the 4,400-square-foot Reynolds Gallery in the historic Fan District—where its proximity to Virginia Commonwealth University
Reynolds currently has her eye on Brooklyn artist Amy Feldman, who focuses on large-scale, geometric forms. Featured here is Sweat Chevs, Feldman’s acrylic on canvas.
allows director Beverly Reynolds to discover emerging new talent. Her gallery has been the launchpad for students such as Tara Donovan, whose large-scale installations of everyday objects have graced the floors of Washington, D.C.’s Corcoran Gallery of Art and New York’s Whitney and Metropolitan museums. “It’s exciting to watch their careers develop and to be a part of the process,” says Reynolds, who started her own career working with dealers in New York. The key to building great exhibitions, she says, is to “look for artists who are making unique and inspired work that challenges perspectives and how we view the world.” After 35 years, Reynolds continues to inspire. “The passion for exhibiting important works by contemporary artists is very exciting, and we continually try to challenge ourselves and the viewer to experience new outlets, whether it’s painting, sculpture—even sound.” reynoldsgallery.com; 804.355.6553

DECORATIVE ART

STYLE MAKERS
Decorative painter Lenore Winters, owner of her eponymous Bethesda studio, recently received enthusiastic press for gilding the bas-relief sculpture of George Washington’s bookplate in his new library at Mount Vernon. Opposite: Timothy Paul Bedding + Home is one of Winters’ favorite decorating haunts.
Decorative painter Lenore Winters applies the same level of detail to faux wood grain as she does to a classically themed mural. It’s no surprise, then, that she’s a go-to artisan for top designers such as Darryl Carter, Frank Babb Randolph and Thomas Pheasant, not to mention architects and homeowners.
“The hardware looks like the emblem of a 1957 Chevy,” says Winters of this midcentury console, which she gave new life to by applying aluminum leaf and a deep turquoise glaze.
“We work on anything that can receive paint,” Winters says, referring to her namesake Bethesda studio. “We paint walls, floors, ceilings, furniture and accessories.” Winters was a longtime artist when she became drawn to decorative painting 26 years ago, after the Smithsonian hired her to create camouflaged mounts for objects in large exhibits at the National Museum of Natural History. She undertook further training on finishes in New York City, and soon took up the pursuit full-time. Since then, she’s seen the city’s artistic landscape change dramatically. “It used to be much more traditional,” Winters says, “but now I see a lot of mixed styles. It’s fun! I’m just as big a fan of painting midcentury modernist consoles with glossy saturated colors as I am of doing gilded antique Louis XIV chairs.” lenorewinters.com; 301.654.6004
P R E T T Y I N PA I N T
LENORE WINTERS WORK APPROACH:
I’m a little obsessive about perfect technique in our finishes, whether they are aged/distressed stucco or high-gloss Venetian plaster. GREATEST INFLUENCES:
Historic interiors and Greek Minoan paintings and murals. DESCRIBE YOUR HOME.
Our home is a classic midcentury flat roof built in 1966. My favorite room is the bedroom—I love the pale Farrow & Ball Green Ground mixed with bittersweet chocolate fabrics and carpet. My favorite part is a wall showcasing a collection of albumen-print photographs from the 1800s. FAVORITE DECORATING SOURCES:
Côté Jardin Antiques, Timothy Paul Bedding + Home, Tone on Tone, and the shops in Cady’s Alley and on 14th Street. I’m also always inspired by the shows at Hemphill Fine Arts, my husband George Hemphill’s gallery on 14th Street. A WELL-DESIGNED SPACE...

To fill the sprawling open space of this Beverly Hills kitchen, designer Michael Berman opted for oversize double islands. “They are a great solution for dividing a long space into two separate cooking and prepping areas,” he says, “and the solid walnut pillar legs create a furniture-like quality.”

“This bathroom, particularly the mosaic floor, was about finding balance; not just in the scale of the space, but between past and present,” says designer Chad Eisner of this Venice Beach, California, retreat. “It touches on historical references of what an oldworld Tuscan home would be today.”

t might sound surprising, but this bathroom is a study in restraint,” says Los Angeles designer Chad Eisner. “It’s really about ‘less is more.’ ” At first glance, the Tuscan-inspired bathroom reveals a custom mosaic floor by Waterworks—softly
reflected in a sculptural mirror-finished soaking tub by the brand— that packs a dazzling punch. But a further study reveals subdued draperies, rough-hewn reclaimed beams, modest hardware. “There really was no competing with that floor or tub,” Eisner says about the space’s protagonists, pieces selected and sited by the home’s architect, William Hablinski. “So I wanted to keep the rest of the details simple.” Eisner draped the double French doors in unlined sea green linen to diffuse sunlight, and selected an eye-catching yet uncomplicated light fixture. “The chandelier could have been really grandiose because of the large volume of space here, but the frame and finish are very simple, and the soft drapes of crystal beads provide a sensual line that casually moves your eye in and out.” Ultimately, Eisner sought to create a warm, soothing oasis where every detail felt effortless. “This room overlooks the Los Angeles Basin, so it has a magical quality in that you can be soaking in the tub and no one in the world can see you, but you’re looking over millions of people go on about their lives.

even years after moving into their house in a new suburban development, the couple who had it built was ready for a change. More mature now with a better sense of style (not to mention two young daughters), they sought to add color,
luster and sophistication to their more neutral Oakton, Virginia, home. The wife, who had been poring over decorating magazines and searching the Internet for ideas, found nearby designer Lauren Liess through her popular blog, Pure Style Home. “I was looking for something youthful, fresh and clean,” the wife says. “I wanted everything to be family-friendly, informal and livable.” That’s where Liess came in. Working with Image Flooring and carpenter Michael Carr, Liess first oversaw the kitchen remodel, helping the owner replace the stained-maple cabinetry and brown granite counters with white-paneled cabinets and twinkling quartzite surfaces. designer added more panache with a mini-mosaic glass backsplash and polished-nickel light fixtures. On the rest of the main level, Liess replaced wall-to-wall carpeting and oak floors with wide-plank hardwood in a deep espresso stain. She then installed tall baseboards to complement the 9-foot room heights, and added new personality to the foyer with a gridwork of molding on the ceiling. Color and texture were next. “It’s a large house,” says Liess. “My aim was to make it warm and intimate, so I added soft color to the walls, as well as pretty wallpapers and grass-cloth ceilings.” The homeowner had selected a palette of pale blues and serene creams, and kept some existing furniture, including a creamy yellow sofa in the family room. Liess began her transformative work in this two-story space, because it was open to the rest of the house. Here, the designer introduced youthful patterns—both botanical and geometric—via upholstery, curtains and pillows, and she layered multiple textures, such as plush mohair-velvet wingbacks and a coarse sisal rug laid beneath the custom wool carpet. Liess then hung long curtains from hardware mounted along the ceiling’s periphery rather

than from rods bisecting the triple-arched windows, as before. She completed the room with a mix of new furnishings and vintage finds. “I like to layer elements to make a space welcoming,” the designer says. “I especially love pulling in natural textures. In a big house, layering makes the rooms cozier. A layered home also feels lived-in.” Liess used iridescent details, such as the living room’s Capiz-shell chandelier and shimmery wallpaper, to balance the decor’s organic feel and to ramp up the glamour. Mirrored furnishings and metallic finishes abound everywhere, reflecting and amplifying light from the new fixtures she also installed. “Lighting is so important,” Liess explains, “especially in a house where the ceilings are so tall. lighting to create focal points in each room … like pieces of jewelry.” Oly’s Pipa chandelier in the foyer, made of folded resin that resembles ribbon candy, is a standout among the home’s many eye-catching fixtures. The overall result is striking. “When I first saw the house, it was much more traditional,” Liess says. “Now, it’s fresher, lighter, happier and more personal—a far better match for my clients.” The wife agrees: “The house is definitely more custom now, and I love it. My kids are all over the place, doing homework in the dining room, playing piano in the living room; my husband and I spend a lot of time together in the kitchen and family room. It really feels like us.” L

hat could induce a suburban couple ensconced for decades in a red-brick, center-hall Colonial to acquire a minimal midcentury modern residence on 7 acres in Baltimore’s rural Greenspring Valley?
The usual answers applied: for the challenge; because we’re fascinated; to make a change. But basic to their decision was the urge to experience a modern perspective—a move that required a leap of faith. The wife, a mother to three teens, knew on their first visit to the house that her husband, a surgeon, loved its sleek textbook modernity. “He was into it from the start,” she remembers. “Jay Jenkins, the designer we’ve used forever for our homes, was on board, too. He said to me, ‘Trust me, this house is a 10.’ That’s when I realized, ‘Maybe I’m just not seeing it?’ ” To her credit, the wife returned for another walk-through, where Jenkins explained how the right furnishings could warm the spare interiors. “A historically correct installation of midcentury furnishings isn’t necessarily the way to go,” he told her. “This house is perfect for a fresh overlay that pays homage to its origin.” LUXE INTERIORS

In the dining room, Mies van der Rohe’s 1930s Brno chairs from Gordon International pay homage to the architectural origin of the house. Designer Jay Jenkins conceived the idea of the lacquered table, which was fabricated by Mitchell Yanosky.
Kitchen designer Trish Houck specified the cerused-oak island, walnut-stained cabinetry and Calacatta Gold marble countertops and backsplash. Jenkins then added Gordon International’s Kreature swivel stools. The appliances are from Sub-Zero and Wolf.

Landscape architect Carol Macht, who worked alongside associate Om Khurjekar, described how landscape changes could also enhance the architecture. “The grounds could better show the quality and intent of the structure,” she explained. “The approach road could reveal the house in a more flattering sequence. This house is a modernist masterwork. We should bring the landscape up to its quality.” Their observations were convincing. Qualms aside, the couple committed to a refurbishment of the interiors, grounds and pool area. They learned that architect Charles H. Richter, of Charles H. Richter & Associates, designed the house in 1965, inspired by the “less is more” school of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. “Simplicity was my goal, and a connection to the outdoors,” Richter explains. “In a house like this, you live in spaces, not tight rooms, in order to expand your view of the world.” LUXE INTERIORS

Jenkins honored Richter’s work by introducing furnishings that respect the interiors’ openness, scale and lack of ornament. “The midcentury modern influence led us to edit for a concise look,” he says. “The furniture is spare and rectilinear. Fabrics and carpets are secondary to the architecture and placement of art.” The color palette mirrors the architecture’s black, white and brown. Accents of orange, a midcentury trend color, appealed to the wife, particularly after she acquired a Stephen Sprouse textile to hang in the entry hall. Jenkins suggested orange leather ottomans to surround the oversized entry table. “What woman doesn’t respond to a brown and orange box?” the wife jokes. “It’s like getting a present from Hermès.” The iconoclastic configuration of rooms in the house was an exhilarating challenge for Jenkins. “An entry hall this big—soaring to skylights 20 feet above—demanded a statement presentation,” he says. “I made it a gathering area that can morph into a grand place to dine and celebrate.” 194 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

Landscape architect Carol Macht replaced the concrete pool surround with bluestone pavers. The Sapphire Galaxy pool color with a Pebble Fina finish enhances reflections and reiterates the black-and-white geometry of the house.
Jenkins added a wall in the master bedroom for the bed to face the view, and reinstalled furnishings he chose for the owners’ previous bedroom. The chaise is from Lee Industries, the desk was custom-made by Mitchell Yanosky, and the art is available through Jenkins Baer Associates.
The designer dressed the master bath with minimal details to place the focus on the architecture’s geometric shapes and brick walls. Sheer linen Duralee casements, interwoven with Lurex yarn, frame a BainUltra tub and open like theater curtains to a verdant view.

The living room, with its three conversation areas and several doors leading outside, exemplifies the midcentury International style’s embrace of spatial flow. “I did separate treatments, all linked together but functioning well for different-sized groups,” Jenkins says. Throughout, he tailored his approach to the rigorous historical style with a consideration for how his clients would enjoy it. The family lived in the house for six months before it was fully furnished, adjusting to the switch from their traditional past. They returned from vacation just as Jenkins completed the installation, revealing a fresh, modern perspective on a classic midcentury design. “There was a fine line between being faithful to the past and referencing it respectfully,” the wife says. “Jay did justice to both, and made us very happy.” L LUXE INTERIORS

hen a homeowner was looking for a change of address, she brought only a few things from her old life: an armoire that belonged to her grandparents and two small rugs purchased in
the mountains of Turkey. She had left behind an antiques-filled apartment with curved walls in a 100-year-old building—”very old-world,” she says. But after 22 years, she had grown tired of using her dining room as a home office—and never having anyone to dinner. In 2010, the woman’s realtor showed her a 21st-century penthouse in a four-unit building in the Kalorama area of Washington, D.C. Its 1,000-square-foot rooftop terrace, along with a large home office and working fireplace, sealed the deal, but adjusting to the new space took time. “Everything [in the former space] was round, and this place is a rectangle,” she recalls. “It was jarring to me.” More jarring still: She had auctioned all her antiques, and for 18 months, sat on patio furniture in the penthouse as she contemplated a new design. “I was just living in this empty space,” she recalls. “It was a painful shift.”

Eschewing traditional arms, the loveseat in the living room features slight “wings,” making it suitable for sitting or reclining near the fire. Over the mantel is a print by artist David Wurtzel from his “Odissea” series. The custom wool-and-silk rug from Galleria Carpets & Rugs was woven in India.
The dining room’s oval chandelier was customized by CX Design in New York. Interior designer Shanon Munn devised the table base to support the slab top, which was designed and made by a friend of the homeowner. Chairs are by Christian Liaigre.

The homeowner interviewed several designers during that time—“a lot of well-known people who were interested in telling me what they liked, rather than discovering what I wanted to create.” Then, a friend nudged her to consider interior designer Shanon Munn. The owner

was immediately struck by her mission statement, which reads, “The cornerstone of a successful project is good communication … by first understanding a client’s dream, and then making it a reality.” After meeting with Munn, she knew she had found a companion for her exploration of a new, modern aesthetic. “She shed everything, and it changed her,” Munn says. Her art in particular reflects the spiritual shift that came with the new environment. in the master bedroom, fabricated by Shelter Studios in Silver Spring, Maryland, was inspired by Native American art and the circles of ancient calendars; it was created with 17 layers of Venetian plaster. The owner had also received a housewarming gift for her new penthouse: a print illustrating a scene from Homer’s The Odyssey. That print hangs over the fireplace—a symbol of sorts for her own journey to a destination infused with elements both modern and primitive, serene and filled with light. Munn further translated her client’s ideas into the floor plan. In the living room, for example, she persuaded her client to forgo furniture clustered only around the fireplace in favor of two distinct seating arrangements. The result is more usable space, both for intimate conversations and entertaining on a larger scale.

“Scale and proportion are very important,” Munn says. “I make sure that the pieces that are selected are appropriate to the space.” That’s why she and her client ended up customizing most of the furnishings. After her client reviewed—and rejected—most retail options, Munn would often draw something on a piece of paper that ended up working better. She then had those drawings locally fabricated; the loveseats and chairs in the living room, along with the entertainment center, sectional and coffee table in the media room, and the client’s office desk and cabinetry are among the results. “It was 100 percent a collaborative effort,” the owner says of the completed design, which truly reflects her new journey in life. “If I had the skill as a designer to create what I was envisioning, this is exactly what I would have created.” L 208 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

or a family with roots in Japan, Canada and England, finding a house in Washington, D.C., proved frustrating at best. Having lived between London and Tokyo for the previous decade, the Canadian-raised financier and his Japanese
wife, an academic, had grown used to the 13-foot-high ceilings of their 19th-century Kensington row house and the wide-open expanse of their
Tokyo abode. Yet the homes they were looking at in the D.C. area either featured ceilings that were too low, or didn’t have the right space for the price, or weren’t close enough to their children’s schools. If patience truly is a virtue, then the homeowners were richly rewarded. After renting for several years and looking to buy for another year, they finally found a down-at-the-heels Queen Anne Victorian, circa 1901, in the Cleveland Park Historic District. “I told them to buy it on the spot,” says architect George Stavropoulos, who was helping the owners with the search and was familiar with the property. Despite its having been gutted by an out-of-state owner who had stopped renovating,

“we could see the potential,” the wife says. The tall ceilings were there, along with an elegant original staircase, five fireplaces, graceful millwork and oversize diamond-mullioned sash windows.
Architect George Stavropoulos designed all the cabinetry for the kitchen in a simple Shaker style. Mirrored backsplashes amplify the light, as does the semi-gloss lacquer finish on the cabinets. The island includes a six-burner Thermador cooktop; the counters are topped with white Statuario marble.
For 16 months, the new owners worked with Stavropoulos to restore the original exterior structure, as required by the historic district, and add a three-story addition in the back—all built through the Canal Group, the building arm to Stavropoulos’ architectural firm. The interior architecture harks back to its Victorian beginnings with accurate moldings and millwork, but also gives them the space the owners craved, Stavropoulos says. “They wanted to respect the classical part of the house, but at the same time, have a more functional, updated look.” Because the house had already been gutted, Stavropoulos didn’t have to do much to create new spaces for his clients, as in the large drawing room, which used to be two separate rooms, where the couple entertains frequently. a view toward the National Cathedral, while above, a new master suite includes studies for both husband and wife and a large dressing area swathed in rich custom cabinetry. For the interiors, the couple looked to place their modern art collection against an assortment of antique, vintage and contemporary furnishings that they already had. “We developed a taste for mixing old and new,” the husband says. To expertly tie the pieces together, the wife reached out to New York designer Robert Gaul for guidance on furniture placement, along with paint, hardware, fabric and wallcovering selections. The couple combined furnishings from their previous homes, so there were few new purchases. “The existing furniture had really good lines,” Gaul says, explaining that only a handful of pieces had to be reupholstered to coordinate with the new spaces. Then it was a matter of creating the right moods. In the drawing room, for example, Gaul selected sheer-on-sheer window treatments so light could infuse the large space while offering privacy at the same time.
Stavropoulos designed the fireplace mantel that resides on the more casual side of the drawing room, with British artist Simon Morley’s Book paintings above. The wood armoire was built by London furniture maker Simon Smith to store silver; the leather sectional is by Poltrona Frau.

In the adjacent dining room, Gaul chose deep, lacquer-like wallpaper by Maya Romanoff to echo the dark Brazilian cherry floors. German photographer Martin Klimas’ enormous Viburnum Opulus print adds more drama, along with a Boyd Lighting chandelier over a custom William Yeoward table. Downstairs, where the basement was dug out to create 9-foot-high ceilings with large windows and French doors, the library gets added brightness from gold Japanese silk wallcovering and crisp cotton shades. Now that the home is completed, the owners love how well it’s absorbed their collections of everything from European to Asian, antique to cutting-edge modern—and they have no immediate plans to move. For his part, Gaul is not surprised the design works so well. “That’s what’s great about people who collect things who have good taste,” he says. “Everything just goes together at the end of the day.” L 218 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

HANSEN ARCHITECTS
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STYLES TO WORK ON AND WHY? As illustrated by images on my website, I enjoy using multiple design languages. All projects, however, stress clarity of form, day lighting and synthesizing indoor and outdoor spaces across styles. WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION? While finishing a degree in Fine Arts, I developed my love of mathematics, engineering and architectural history. This led me to get a Masters in Architecture and start my career. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NEXT? I typically work on seven to ten residences at any one time. I’m currently excited about having two fairly dramatic modern designs underway located next door to one another.
Marta Hansen approaches projects by developing hand-drawn perspective sketches during the creative phase of design because the often homogenizing process of computer mediation is not the best way to visualize a home’s potential. She composes fluently in three dimensions, manipulating architectural languages, axial relations, interior sight lines, traffic flow, materials, massing, day lighting, transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces and other elements to express a client’s vision in real-time—not days later in computer drawings entered one line at a time. By designing in a more fluid, artistic and human visual medium, Hansen is better able to achieve more attractive, non-formulaic designs tailored to each client’s desires. During her 30 years in architecture, Hansen has won numerous awards, and her projects have been featured in regional and national publications and on HGTV. She has also become an expert at managing the bidding process among contractors competing to build her projects, typically saving clients more than her total architectural fee.
“I personally execute all aspects of my clients’ projects, thereby assuring continuity and integrity of design in every detail.” –MARTA HANSEN, AIA, LEED AP
This contemporary Craftsman-style home admits light through a central atrium, solving the problem of having no rear windows because the back of the house is cut directly into the hillside.
This abstracted farmhouse is a series of pavilions linked by glass hyphens oriented around a central courtyard. The client’s classic car collection is displayed behind glass garage doors on the left.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENTS WOULD CHARACTERIZE YOU? My clients have described me as insightful, understanding how to listen. They say I am adept at using color to execute a design flow in a home.
The clean-lined, warmth-infused spaces of Susan Gulick convey her desire to create homes that are, above else, comfortable. For more than 25 years, she has been articulating her characteristically elegant yet livable aesthetic, which today is confidently expressed through what she calls “soft contemporary” design. “For me, it’s about problem solving. The challenge is to create an environment that people are going to be comfortable in and are able to go about their daily lives in,” says Gulick. “You have to understand how they are going to live, move and feel in each room, and once you get it to function, then you make it beautiful.” Founded in 1988, Susan Gulick Interiors is a full-service firm composed of highly experienced designers who share a passion for memorable color palettes, intriguing custom-made furnishings and bold, striking works of art. “I execute a design flow from room to room with color,” says Gulick. “I then employ a mix of favorite elements, such as rich fabrics, hand-loomed carpets and cutting-edge lighting. The results are my signature refined rooms that merge contemporary aesthetics with the requirements of modern living.”
“Cultures, colors and architectural details discovered and explored while traveling inspire me to create distinctive, meaningful interiors.”

ITALO CERAMICA
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STYLES TO WORK ON AND WHY? I like contemporary design because the aesthetics are constantly evolving based on current trends and styles. I appreciate sleek lines, neutral hues interspersed with pops of color and intricate details. WHAT ARE THE KEY INFLUENCES IN YOUR WORK TODAY? Nature’s vast color palettes inspire a variety of design styles and can drastically affect the composition of a space as well as impact its mood. WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? I begin by sketching. This also allows me to visualize my ideas on paper. Next, I refine my ideas in the schematic design phase, which is based on needs, form, function and space planning.
Behind every piece of tile at Italo Ceramica, there is a story—a story of what inspired the design; why they look the way they do; how they were made; and where they were made. The story begins in artisanal factories in Italy, in the hands of seasoned craftspeople, and gradually develops to 37 Italo Ceramica showrooms worldwide. “We have some truly beautiful tiles, which we import directly from Italy,” says Dina Reifel, senior designer of Italo Ceramica, Rockville, Maryland. “The tiles are displayed in large format, 8’ x 5’ sliding panels, with specially made LED lights washing over the surface of the tiles. This allows all the detailed and carefully designed characteristics of each tile collection to be displayed in all their beauty.” With an eye toward creating work that is “beautiful in the eyes of the person purchasing it,” Reifel collaborates closely with the client to understand what they want and what beauty means to them. “To think these people live in the space I designed really satisfies me. I feel like I brighten their day and their life by designing a living space that they love to be in every day,” she says.
“It is rare to have the opportunity to see every detail and have the whole history of the tile explained to you. That is what you get at Italo Ceramica.”
–DINA REIFEL, SENIOR DESIGNER
The shower is the focal point in the space, where the tiles are switched to a vertical layout. A thin, sophisticated band of olive green is used to highlight the showerhead and mirror the stripe on the opposing wall.
In order to balance the rich, dark colors associated with the wood tiles, small, reflective tiles were added in the area surrounding the tub. This creates a subtle focal area where light can be reflected and concentrated.

Guests clad in vintage Hollywood props voted for their favorite Artifacts faucet and after enjoying Mediterranean favorites like spanakopita and cannolis, it was announced that the most popular product was the Bell spout design with classic lever handles.
