Where Are You heAded? In the world of design, journeying—in some way, shape or form—is a constant. The turn around a showroom corner can lead to an inspiring discovery. An architectural structure rising from the landscape might spur a Moleskine full of ideas. From early September through late June, the pace in our industry is rapid-fire with fresh introductions in textiles, furniture, lighting, home accents and materials. To a large extent, this is what stimulates us, excites us, and nudges the design zeitgeist along. If ever there was a time to decelerate though, it is summer, when the pace slackens and so many escape to far-flung places (Will everyone be shopping in Europe this summer? Seems so). Taking a journey—whether it’s as modest as transitioning from your living room to the backyard for an afternoon, or more elaborate, as in two weeks overseas—further encourages the design dialogue. For those of us with a desire to remain curious, and sweep through life with a fine-tuned eye, the adventure never stops. I hope that you enjoy this special Luxe Hamptons edition, a compendium of the people, places and ideas that are shaping design out East.

It’s early in the morning in East Hampton, and the scene reads like the opening of a poem: birds chirping, sun shining, the scent of freshly mowed grass is in the air. Charlotte Moss, stepping off her back terrace with a cup of coffee in hand, beelines it to her favorite spot in her nearly 3-acre garden—the fountain. “That’s where you can find me most often,” says Moss. “It’s in a large area and I like to sit there and take in the quiet. It can be quite magical.” For her latest tome, Garden Inspirations, focusing on the garden seemed like the natural thing to do, Moss says. Taking many of the featured photographs herself, the pages are lined with images of her beloved rose garden; original, hand-drawn plans that evolved throughout the decades and espalier-style walkways inspired by her travels. “The way the French have coaxed trees into doing whatever they want is incredible,” she says. “To me, that’s the architecture of the garden.”

This page: Clockwise from above: Garden Inspirations by Charlotte Moss / Rizzoli / $50 / charlottemoss.com. Moss with her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Original hand-drawn plans of the designer’s back garden. Amongst espalier-style hedges, a stone fountain creates a calming sanctuary. Opposite: The lush gardens of Moss’ East Hampton home.

Though now a veritable garden maestro, Moss was charting new territory when she and her husband purchased their estate 27 years ago, as the landscaping required the most work. Trees needed to be planted, flower beds installed and an edible garden, which had to be conveniently located for easy access for snipping herbs, took priority. Moss admits that, “Planning the type of outdoor space I wanted was completely out of my realm of knowledge.” So she enlisted the help of Lisa Stamm and Dale Booher from Homestead Garden Design to guide and shape the space. In the end, she says, they taught her everything she knows about garden design and they have been collaborating ever since. Although Moss realizes that not everyone has a garden, she holds true to the idea that the creation of the book was to inspire people on a number of different levels. The way she looks at it is simple: “When I’m in the Hamptons, what I see out of every window is just as important as the room I am sitting in itself.” For Moss, the garden is the great equalizer. CHARM CITY

This season, London Jewelers in Southampton will be the exclusive carrier of the effortlessly chic line Tirisi Moda. Based in Holland, the brand features diamond and gemstone rings, and bracelets crafted in fine Italian leathers with gold, diamond and semiprecious gemstone charms. “We wanted to kick off the season with something fresh and playful,” says Camille Hull, who has been buying for London Jewelers for 12 years. “The dyed leather mixed with the gold will be a staple this summer for the Hamptonite who wants that casual lifestyle yet still craves an elegant piece of jewelry.” Each piece is seriously versatile, making it easy to layer and collect over time. 47 Main Street, Southampton; 631.287.4499; londonjewelers.com

DOUBLE THREAT

The already beloved Bridgehampton Inn & Restaurant has gotten a new neighbor, and even more reasons to visit. Another local darling, Loaves & Fishes Cookshop, has moved next door to the Inn in its yearlong renovation and expansion, which included a two-story addition, a second-floor seating area for guests, six additional rooms and daily lunch offerings from the fine dining restaurant opened last June. As before, you’ll find all of owners Sybille van Kempen and Anna Pump’s favorite items in the shop for entertaining and cooking, kitchen necessities and home accessories, as well as live demonstrations. Though sister location Loaves & Fishes Food Store still remains in Sagaponack, patrons of the restaurant will be treated to top cheese picks from the store to round out the new-every-week menu by Chef de Cuisine Arie Pavlou. 2266 Main Street, Bridgehampton; 631.537.3660; bridgehamptoninn.com

RAISE YOUR GLASS

The rosé shortage of 2014 was a slump in the summer season that left some East Enders in a variable state of bottle-shock. This year, local vineyards have prepared for the inevitable rush to stockpile summer’s signature drink— and Sagaponack’s Wölffer Estate Vineyard has taken note. Last month, the Hamptons’ most popular winery not only released 822 cases (32 percent more than last year) of their high-end white label, Grandioso Rosé, but also debuted an updated label design of the winemakers’ highly coveted varietal. Hamptons native and co-owner of the vineyard Joey Wölffer felt that the old label was not a true representation of the brand today. Now—drawing inspiration from the freespirited and rugged Hamptons of her youth—Wölffer’s new label is a chic moniker that represents the true elegance of the upper crust of Long Island wine coupled with Joey’s natural, Bohemian aesthetic. 139 Sagg Road, Sagaponack; 631.537.5106; wolffer.com

Five things that are always in your beach bag? My iPad, a bottle of water, Hampton Sun SPF 15, my cell phone and a Hermès towel. Favorite beach? Ponquogue Beach in Hampton Bays. Go-to host gift? A peach pie from Briermere Farms. If you don’t love these pies, there’s something wrong with you! Where can we find you at 5 p.m. on Friday? On the Long Island Expressway, sitting in traffic.

Favorite town in the Hamptons? Shelter Island. There is less traffic, less people and it’s very low-key. Preferred beach? Silver Beach on Shelter Island; it’s breezy, wild and isolated. Any beach rituals? I always ride my bike there and I leave my phone behind. Where can we find you at 5 p.m. on Friday? In the kitchen at Marie Eiffel Market preparing for the weekend crowd. When I’m done, I’ll be on the back deck with a glass of wine.

What would you bring to a party? I like to bring a bundle of branches, carefully cut for a vase, from any plant in my garden that at that particular moment says, “Take me.” Describe your beach bag. I’m a surf fisherman so I use a five-gallon spackle bucket, preferably white. Favorite beach ritual? I take my shoes off and throw them into the shoe pile in the parking lot; it’s really quite liberating.

Describe your beach bag. A pink leather tote with gold studs that I picked up in Santorini, Greece. Five things always in that bag? La Roche-Posay Anthelios Sunscreen SPF 50, a meat tenderizer, as it’s the best cure if you get stung by a jellyfish, goggles for swimming in the ocean, a bottle of rosé on ice and bottled water for my two Yorkies. Favorite beach? Montauk, so I can watch all of the surfers. It reminds me of my childhood spent in Hawaii.

Favorite town in the Hamptons? The most special village is East Hampton. It’s home to some families who can trace their lineage back 10 to 12 generations. Describe your beach bag. It’s either a Figue Bohemian Gypset Tuk Tuk tote or my Feed bag that I picked up at Urban Zen in Sag Harbor. Where can we find you at 5 p.m. on Friday? On my boat getting ready to watch the sunset with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut Champagne in hand.

What’s in your beach bag? I don’t carry a beach bag. I only have a stripped-down wallet with a credit card, a twenty-dollar bill and my business card— because you never know. Where can we find you at 5 p.m. on Friday? With friends on the front porch of The American Hotel in Sag Harbor, and we’ll be toasting the weekend with Casaamigos Añejo on the rocks with plenty of lime. Favorite town? Sag Harbor, we’re rooted here.

IN hEr laTEST cOllabOraTION wITh SchUmachEr, TExTIlE dESIgNEr ElIzabETh dOw TUrNS TO ThE grEaT OUTdOOrS TO ExUdE ThE caSUal SpIrIT Of hEr fIrST OUTdOOr cOllEcTION. You’ve been living and working in the Hamptons full-time for the past decade. Did your love of the East End inspire this collection? Yes, it had a major influence. Outdoor and performance fabrics serve a real need for active lifestyles, and the one greatest thing about being in the Hamptons is the natural beauty of the landscape. I like to spend as much time as I can outdoors so it was an easy direction to follow. Tell us more about the collection? There are five different patterns ranging from wovens to prints. We decided to add a denim textile, as well, as we felt it was timeless and indigo has always been a favorite of mine. Overall, I am extremely influenced by Japanese textiles, the weaving and the dying processes are like no other. I also took some cues from a wallpaper in my line that includes a batik rendition of turtles and a simple hand-blocked-inspired scheme called Sarong Weave; that’s my personal favorite.

042 / luxe interiors + design

What do you love most about that print in particular? The timeless quality of it, especially in the Sea Salt colorway. It feels perfectly worn in from wear. All the fabrics in the collection seem to have that sense, almost this artisanal quality. Handmade has always been close to my heart and something I look toward as a continuum— there is nothing that replaces the craft of making something out of nothing. We tried to get as much of the handmade feeling as possible in the collection so that it ties in with the artistic hand that we are known for. With all of your collaborations, how do you continue to find inspiration to keep your designs fresh? I travel extensively and my inspiration stems from that. Sometimes, in an old painting or antique rug, there is a beauty so great that it is impossible to duplicate. I love that moment when you realize something is really extraordinary.

Muriel Brandolini’s first pop-up store, Life by Muriel Brandolini, is an international marketplace filled with finds from the designer’s travels, collections from close friends and her own global-inspired line. “I think many people turn to design as a form of escape,” says Brandolini. “When someone comes into the store, I want them to feel a sense of discovery.” To encapsulate her signature multicultural and vibrant aesthetic, Brandolini curated everything in the shop herself. “I thought long and hard about what I am always searching for— especially in the summertime,” she says of the process that eventually led to her designing some of her most coveted pieces. “There is handblown glass and gilded lanterns and I am excited to introduce my first line of metallic bathing suits and sandals handmade in Greece.” Brandolini admits that the little shop of nomadic curiosities was indeed a spontaneous idea but it has since turned into the talk of the town. THE HAMPTONS’ TOP REAL ESTATE PROS DISH ON WHAT’S HOT FOR THE SEASON.

The grand, twostory foyer of a Bridgehampton South estate.

Bespoke Real Estate

How has architecture in the Hamptons evolved? We’re seeing more modern architecture off the water. People appreciate how open, contemporary design lends itself to entertaining, as well as the use of larger windows and doors for optimal views. Most over-the-top home you’ve ever sold? 828 Sagg Main Street in Sagaponack, designed by Grade Architecture and Interior Design and built by J. Bialsky, who creates amazing homes over 20 million dollars. The pool was a standout with three-pools-in-one, including a 67-foot lap lane, an octagonal deep end and a shallow area perfect for pool volleyball. What exceptional amenities are you seeing? Everyone wants drama. There was a home on Quimby Lane that had a seven-figure door and window package. One of the doors was an enormous sheet of glass with a push-button that, within seconds, receded into the ceiling to reveal the outdoors. It is bells and whistles like that one that set a property apart.

The home at 950 Ocean Road is surrounded by tall hedges for ultimate privacy.

Where does everyone want to be this season? Sag Harbor is much sought after with many restaurants within a block of each other, and it’s the only village where the marinas meet Main Street. It also has some of the more interesting condo developments. Curb appeal or big-name architect? Definitely curb appeal first. If it’s been done by a well-known architect, all the better. Most over-the-top home you’ve sold? In 2005, I sold a John Kean home that was 18,000 square feet on 12 acres. Not only did it have views of the ocean, but also a full-size indoor basketball court. Major real estate trend? People seem drawn to new construction that’s fully furnished. Real estate in the Hamptons right now is... Hot, hot, hot!

Where does everyone want to be this season? New Yorkers want to be closer to the city so they are flocking to Southampton. Sometimes, they do want more of a rural retreat with horse farms and apple orchards, so they look more in Sagaponack and parts of Bridgehampton. What kind of property is the most hard to come by? Waterfront and close to the ocean are always the number-one sellers but 2-acre-plus homes are getting harder to find lately. People want space, and even though a lot of them have penthouse gardens in the city, it’s not the same as having a big yard. How do the individual villages reflect the homebuyers’ personalities? East Hampton is where you’ll find older money with more formal, gated and hedged estates. Sagaponack is much more country and rural. Bridgehampton is horse farms and apple orchards. Amagansett, on the other hand, is still a little country and more of what the Hamptons used to be like: you can walk to the beach and to town, and it has more of a local flair.

22

SARAH MINARDI Saunders

What was your biggest sale on the East End? 210 Daniel Lane, Sagaponack, which sold for $11 million. It came on the market and sold within 30 days. Most over-the-top home you’ve sold? An upside-down cedar Shingle in East Hampton’s Northwest Woods with views of the Atlantic and Georgica Pond. I first sold it in 2009 and again in 2014. The second time around the seller had outfitted the new home theater with a half-a-million-dollar speaker system. The house sold without the speakers, but one buyer was adamant that they stay—which killed the deal. My seller was not parting with his AV equipment! Real estate in the Hamptons is… Rewriting history. It’s all about size, value and a need-to-knowright-now mentality. Best value for an oceanfront property? The Montauk oceanfront is hot, as it has the secret of being on the water for less than $10 million. It’s not a secret anymore, though, and the price doubles two miles to the west and stays that way until you exit Southampton.

Where are the new-money mansions? Having something along the ocean is big for new-money Wall Street types. It’s the kind of property that goes for $30-$40 million before they even start to build. Alternatively, sometimes they are spending that amount on a more dated home and then doing millions of dollars in renovations. Where are buyers coming from this season? Besides New York City, I have more buyers than ever coming from California and Connecticut. Biggest sale on the East End? A 1920s traditional brick home in Southampton for $75 million. It is extremely rare to have a brick home on the ocean and only a few were ever built in the Hamptons. It went through many renovations throughout the years but it is still a very special house. How do you think architecture has evolved in the Hamptons? It’s all about the view and finding that perfect balance between indoor and outdoor living. Buyers want open floor plans because, even if they are spending upwards of ten million dollars on a home, they want it to look like they have a much more casual, easy lifestyle.

Sotheby’s

Curb appeal or big-name architect? Right now, people are buying for architecture, and most of them want that modern look. It’s a real escape for them and it’s about having something different than their home in the city. Where do new buyers want to be? It depends, but I do my best to show them two or three homes in each hamlet. People will tell you they are looking for a traditional Shingle-style home and the next thing you know, they’re in contract for a modern. Biggest sale on the East End? It was Wooldon Manor on Gin Lane, and it sold for $85 million. What are the top three demands buyers are looking for in their homes today? I’ll give you two: location and value. For the location, it really is all about the views. For value, it’s financial versus emotional. More times than not, it’s not always about the investment, but about seeing your family in that space.

Since 1991, Stargazer, the bright red 50-foot-tall sculpture depicting a deer looking skyward, has presided over a Manorville field, serving as the unofficial gateway to the Hamptons. Years ago, its creator, Southamptonite Linda Scott, traveled with Mexican archaeologist Victor Segovia to the pyramids of the Yucatán and realized, “All those cities represented the celestial relationship; it’s where the Mayans got their information.” Her life pursuing mystical work, particularly writings of influential spiritual teacher G.I. Gurdjieff, spawned an entire series of Stargazers around the world. Scott has also recently partnered with jeweler Eric Messin to turn her revered works into wearable art pieces (shown at right). “Metaphysically speaking, we—nature, you, me, everything—are the connection to the above from below,” she says. “That’s what the Stargazer symbolizes.” lindascott.org

Jack Lenor Larsen may have designed thousands of textiles—sold through Cowtan & Tout—over several decades, but it took aligning himself with other creatives to really find his voice. “I have worked with the greatest architects,” says the 87-yearold Larsen, an East Hampton fixture since 1952. “I was so keen to please them and understand what they wanted that it forced me to do new things.” Among those: introducing ethnographic textiles to America (our current love affair with ikats would be unthinkable without him). He now devotes his time to LongHouse Reserve, where, he says, “I take what I learned in other design practices and try them out in the garden.” Larsen is also working on three books, curating exhibitions and lecturing around the world. “I’ve never been so busy,” he says. longhouse.org A piece from artist Linda Scott’s line of jewelry, available at Pelletreau Silver Shop in Southampton.

Furniture Maker/Artist Jeff Muhs’ interest in varied art forms is clear from his ultimate party guest list: visual artist Gerhard Richter, modernist furniture designer Edward Wormley, sculptor Robert Morris, architect Zaha Hadid and textile designer Jack Lenor Larsen. He’s practiced several of these forms himself yet doesn’t distinguish between them. “I see my furniture as sculpture,” he explains of his limitededition, handcrafted Emirate collection. “When I began designing this line, I went to Dubai, where the architecture is anything but rectangular mass forms. It’s playful, which you can say about 1950s modern, too.” The birch-plywood-and-laminate pieces are inspired by midcentury antecedents— Jean Arp, George Nelson, Hans Wegner—but reimagined in muscular, high-tech silhouettes. In addition to his furnishings line, he continues to create contemporary, abstract paintings out of his Southampton studio and is currently experimenting with textiles. jeffmuhsstudio.com

PAUL VOGEL Bookbinder

After art studies at Pratt, Paul Vogel wanted to see the world. “From my travels in third world countries,” he recalls, “I was feeling a need to do something with my hands.” He satiated that hunger by apprenticing at bookbinderies in England and found his calling. Though the craft is now a dying breed, Vogel keeps the art form alive out of his East Hampton home. Using buttery leathers, cotton rag paper and any bespoke details commissioned by his clients—which have included such high-profile names as Ralph Lauren and Charlotte Moss—Vogel creates books completely by hand using 300-year-old techniques. “Bookbinding always goes through waves of popularity,” he notes. “When people feel a tradition is going to be lost, there’s suddenly interest again. Books say more about the giver than a Kindle does.” vogelbindery.com

OPEN-DOOR POLICY DESIGNER MARIECHRISTINE MCNALLy PLAyS uP A RENOwNED HAMPTONS ARCHITECT’S AESTHETIC IN THIS quINTESSENTIAL AMAGANSETT BEACH COTTAGE THAT IS BOTH CASuAL AND CHIC. 66 / luxe interiors + design

This home has quite the history. Architect Alfred A. Scheffer’s main patron, Ella Barbour, commissioned this cottage in the 1940s. It truly exemplifies Scheffer’s architectural style from that time period and area of the Hamptons. The architecture is clean and simple with small, wellproportioned rooms and beautiful materials such as knotty pine plank floors and exposed brick. The entire first floor features exposed beams revealing the floorboards of the second floor. The idea for my design was to highlight these simple details and not to overpower them.

How exactly did you call out these subtle details in your design? The home is located in such a special area—think swimsuit-clad parents toting their sandy kids around in red Radio Flyer wagons—and I sought to imbue the house with that same spirit. I wanted the home to be beach-chic while still casual and low-maintenance. Everything in the home represents all of my personal inclinations: lots of white and natural textures, such as rattan and abaca, layered with interesting pieces. The overall effect is calm and relaxing, which is exactly what you want when at the beach.

What are your tips for creating such an easy-going and laidback space? Sun rooms are naturally inviting because of the light streaming in and this one is especially sunny thanks to windows on three sides of the room. I used a thick, cushy flokati rug to warm up the brick flooring and chose a versatile hair-on-hide ottoman that can also be used as a coffee table, footrest or as additional seating. All of these elements create the perfect place for a small gathering.

utilizing clean lines, exposed beams and rustic metals, designers sharla seton and diana byrne spark a coastal spirit in this family-friendly kitchen. You stripped this dated space of its existing beadboard cabinetry and dark-paneled ceiling. What was the jumping-off point? the existing space had more of a ski-chalet feel and we wanted it to better reflect the surrounding beach dunes of its true Westhampton setting. We freshened it up with a lighter paint color and countertops and chose a soft sandy-gray stain for the ceiling reminiscent of driftwood. keeping with the natural, beach feel of the home, the goal was to imagine as if the owner was walking down the beach, discovering different elements to pick up: a rusty nail, symbolized in the hardware; sandy toes, illustrated on the linen-covered stools; and a collection of seashells, reimagined through the marble slabs.

How did the cabinetry and hardware choices fit into the design? the shaker-style cabinetry is so beautiful in its simplicity. it was the perfect balance to the room’s marble and rustic, oversize pendants. We exposed the butt hinge in an oil-rubbed bronze, but then added a modern angled cutter profile to keep the cabinets current. We then chose to panel the appliances so as to not break up the beautiful woodwork and to make the kitchen feel more like a furniture piece. tying into the deep veining of the marble, the hardware also gives a nice weight to the clean, cotton white cabinetry, and we knew it would age beautifully as the years go by. this is a style of kitchen that will last for decades. 68 / luxe interiors + design

photo: jane beiles.

What drew you to this particular marble? We were walking the marble yard trying to find the perfect piece and hidden high up on a shelf was this small, dusty chunk of marble that spawned the entire kitchen. We had originally planned on a glass-tile backsplash, but once we caught sight of the big slabs weeks later, we knew we had to continue it up the back wall, as well. the deep veining is so funky and wild, perfectly capturing the beach colors and the way that the ocean leaves markings in the sand at low tide.

What inspired such a bright color in this living room? After a few meetings, we discovered that our client loved the bold use of color and wanted a dramatic statement in the main entertaining space of the home. Once we realized that, we committed to a vivid color scheme that set the tone for the entire project. We chose a vibrant marine blue, offsetting it with crisp white and silver elements. Most people would have designed a more serious room in this formal space, but because our client was open to taking a more unexpected approach, she ended up with a room that became a real conversation piece.

This space radiates with a look that is quintessentially Hamptons. Blue-and-white is a classic color combination you’ll find throughout the Hamptons. In this case, however, we wanted to put our own spin on it, giving the room a signature look and feel. Touches of playful items, such as the mirror inspired by leaf coral, create a space that is the epitome of beach chic.

photo: eric striffler.

Why did you decide to keep the furnishings simplistic? Less is definitely more here and overcrowding was never the approach. The client preferred to let the blue be the star and to keep the accents to a minimum. The large scale of the room called for something to help envelope the furnishings and create a sharp and tailored contrast, and the crisp paneling was designed in a clean and transitional way to complement the space. Individual pieces are still able to hold your attention, showcasing a true appreciation for the artistry behind each decorative item.

How did you achieve the perfect balance of glamour and comfort? I approach each project with style, functionality and color in mind. The dramatic vaulted ceiling and existing fireplace and wall paneling helped give direction for this space to be a structured living room, to create a symmetrical layout to complement the more traditional architecture. We wanted the living room to function as a formal living space, but for casual weekend living. Since this room is located next to the playroom, we didn’t want anything too precious in this space, so we chose glamorous materials in sturdy finishes.

Green seems to be your color muse here. Why that particular hue? My muse was the picturesque gardens of Stourhead in England. The vegetation and architectural elements there conspire to make this magical place, and I sought to bring that same magical feel indoors. I designed this space for the young family to be airy, bright and approachable, furnishing the room in colorful purples to play off of the green. The client was so inspired that she selected the artwork to complement the hues of the room. I chose the vintage Silvano Pantani grape table lamps as a reference to the vineyard fields of Long Island.

Did any happy accidents happen during the design of this room? I wanted the space to have a commonality of materials, which you’ll notice through the prevelance of brass. One of the most striking brass pieces has quite the story. The clients had originally hired me to design their apartment in the city, and I had found these fabulous tessellated cream tables accented with brass inlay. They had to be purchased as a pair, even though at the time, the clients only needed one. Two years later, the other table finally found its home here.

There is something to be said about a no-fuss affair: The fine china can stay in the cupboard, silverware doesn’t have to be polished and the linens need not be pressed. With that level of ease, it’s easy to see why in recent years, there has been an emphasis on a more casual way of dining—think family-style dishes and bench seating. This summer, give your go-to formal tableau the night off and set the table with an edgy mix of vintage staples

and raw wood accessories, like a carved salvaged-wood salt cellar from Homenature coupled with hand-dyed linens from Silk & Willow in upstate New York. New classics such as imported porcelain espresso cups made by artisans in Italy and effortless Astier de Villatte plates—picked up at Bloom in Sag Harbor— create just the right amount of je ne sais quoi when peppered with antique stunners (like a fish-eye bottle opener). Sit back, relax and revel in the fact that fretting over your next tablescape is a thing of the past.

GO-TO SHOP: Laurin Copen Antiques WHere: 1703 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton WHaT’S IN STOre: Antique furnishings and décor ranging from pre-19th century to mid-20th century reaSON TO STOP IN: A lot of antiques stores specialize in a distinct style. Here, though, the collection is very eclectic—swedish, Adirondack, industrial, midcentury—and highly edited. It harks back to what the Hamptons was before all the development. the store is in a historic 18th-century farmhouse on the outskirts of town. talk about old school. WHO TO Talk TO: Laurin Copen and Alicia wiltshire are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. NOTaBle FIND: Jesse was able to get a swedish drop-front desk in a red painted finish, which is very hard to find.

Also, the store has saved me numerous times when I was searching for that last-minute hostess gift. WHO TO Talk TO: Karen Comerford, the owner, has redefined the term modern, imbuing it with a comfortable, uncomplicated simplicity, very similar to my own design aesthetic.

WHO TO Talk TO: Lana Kozar. she always asks how my mother is doing and how my children are. NOTaBle FIND: A midcentury silvio Cavatorta rosewood commode! I love its multiple layers. It’s functional, with plenty of storage, but it still feels light and airy. I don’t know why no one’s bought it—probably because it’s $20,000!

GO-TO SHOP: Ann Madonia Antiques WHERE: 36 Jobs Lane, Southampton WHAT’S IN STORE: One-ofa-kind lighting, case pieces and other antique treasures REASON TO STOP IN: I’ve been purchasing from Ann for over 30 years. There are plenty of temptations throughout the Hamptons and a growing surge of interest in midcentury modernism, but Ann Madonia delivers furniture and objects that are settled, charming, refined and nuanced. The shop always has a splendid selection of Louis XV furniture, which is beautiful and extremely comfortable. The Hamptons is always at the forefront of 20th-century modernism, so it is reassuring to recall the pleasures of another age and time. ith spectacular natural vistas, cool breezes and the entrancing sound of crashing waves, the Atlantic coast is an alluring location for a weekend getaway. So when a Manhattan couple with a young son found a unique property located on Mecox Bay in the Hamptons, they decided to build just such a retreat. The result is a three-level steel-and-concrete structure clad with western red cedar siding that will weather over time like a piece of driftwood. “The cedar will ultimately end up matching the boardwalk and the deck on the side of the pool,” explains architect Viola Rouhani. “The goal is for the building to really recede and allow nature to be the star of the show.” To prepare the sandy lot for construction, contractor Joe Lynch demolished the original home that once stood on the site and created a stable foundation for the new one by driving 75 wood pilings 40 feet into the ground.

“There was an enormous amount of engineering required to make the foundation work,” Lynch says. The modern structure has two volumes: one for the public spaces, and the other for more intimate spaces. A central core housing the main staircase links them and frames an ocean view that is visible from the large expanse of glass at the front entrance. “It was very important to us that there be an indication as you approach the house that there is this beautiful landscape on the other side,” Rouhani explains. Indeed, Rouhani’s design features floor-to-ceiling windows facing the bay to the west and curated views of the ocean to the east. To maintain the minimalistic look her clients’ envisioned, the architect eschewed draperies in favor of shades that are concealed in the ceiling and wood screens on the exterior. “The architectural screening creates beautiful shadow patterns in the space,” says interior designer Eleanor Donnelly, who selected finishes and designed many of the home’s furnishings. In the open

Opposite: The home’s cedar siding has been laid out in horizontal and vertical orientations for both aesthetics and functionality. The horizontal boards help create an exterior balcony on the second floor, and the vertical boards form a screen that conceals an outdoor shower, storage and other utilitarian functions on the lower level. The anodizedaluminum door and window system is by Arcadia. Below: A sectional from Viesso, covered in a fabric blend from Maharam, and a pair of brushed stainless-steel-andwicker chairs by Fritz Hansen from Hive in Portland, Oregon, form a relaxed seating area in the great room. kitchen, for example, Donnelly incorporated custom built-in white Formica cabinetry that conceals a bar, additional refrigeration and storage. “It’s an industrial finish that holds up to family life and entertaining,” Donnelly explains. “Everything kind of happens in one large space, so we needed to house a lot of the clutter and mess of everyday life behind doors.” The gleaming white built-in complements the custom kitchen cabinetry, which is made of a wood veneer that resembles driftwood. The open space also includes areas for dining and conversation in front of a bluestone-clad fireplace, which echoes the soothing palette of bluegreen hues that can be found throughout the house. “Viola and I believe in a minimal palette, functional spaces and

honesty in materials,” Donnelly says. “We tried to repeat the materials and color throughout, so that the design is cohesive and you have one experience versus many different moments that are collected together.” Custom shelving continues in the third-floor hallway, this time made of walnut. The material reappears in the liveedge dining table in the great room and custom cabinetry in a casual den on the top floor, which has a screened-in porch overlooking the bay. The view from that space is Rouhani’s favorite thing about the modern abode. “It gives the sense of being on your own perch elevated above the water with views in all directions,” she explains. “We hoped to recreate the quintessential beach house that brings the outdoors in and the indoors out, and I think we accomplished that.”

Above: Landscape designer Chris LaGuardia created a plan to replace the original deck with a more compact version made of mahogany and remove invasive plant species, as well as installed native grasses and vegetation. The adjustable beach chairs are from Dedon. Opposite, clockwise from top left: The staircase’s floating treads are made of rift-cut white oak. A bed from Modernica is positioned to take advantage of the Mecox Bay views. Custom walnut cabinetry offers storage in the upstairs hallway. Crystal Beaches of Jökulsárlón by Matthew Carbone resides in the family room.

hen you’re Iris Dankner, you don’t just entertain; you entertain in multitudes. In fact, the New York socialite, designer, breast cancer survivor and highly visible fundraising dynamo (she almost doubled revenues for the Susan G. So when Dankner went looking for a Southampton getaway 10 years ago, she knew she wanted a gracious yet sizeable home that could accommodate large gatherings. “I always loved Farrell homes,” she says of the construction company helmed by Joe Farrell, whose highly detailed custom residences are fixtures of the region. Unfortunatly, the one she fell in love with—a white-trimmed Shingle-style home with generous public spaces and an open flow—got away. But, as she recalls, “He had another property nearby where he was planning to build a similar home.” With the location being just minutes away from Little Peconic Bay, Dankner instead purchased that property and, with the help of architects James McDonough and Michael Conroy, “was able to make a few changes to the existing plan,” she says. The most substantial modification, remembers builder Steve Pryzby, Farrell’s vice president who took over the build once Dankner purchased the home, was “a master bedroom deck that extended much further out than was planned. We had to structuralize the columns by adding steel and footings.” A happy accident created a generous loggia by the pool for lounging. The interior boasts signature Farrell details, such as coffered ceilings and a two-story foyer that has a view straight out to the backyard and pool, which provides, says Pryzby, “that wow effect.” For Dankner, it is the moodsetter she wanted. “You step in and you feel like you’re away,” she observes. An inveterate traveler, Dankner is often away herself, and almost every year she alters the décor, sometimes radically, after each trip. For the master bath, she hauled a 19th-century French mirror from Paris’ Marché aux Puces across the ocean, while Guatemalan fabrics and a folk art giraffe infuse her daughter Niki’s red bedroom with ethnic flair. The family refers to the loggia under the master deck as “Belize,” because artifacts from a trip there decorate the table and landscape designer Tom Janczur’s potted plantings of elephant ears give it an exotic aspect. 106 / luxe interiors + design

The master deck itself morphed after a trip to Costa Rica—its patterned carpet and wire furnishings exuding a tropical charm. “I just love the outdoor spaces found in the Caribbean,” she says. Throughout the public spaces, Dankner deployed a palette of white, brown and blue, allowing one color to dominate in a certain room and recede in another. Brown, for example, takes center stage in the moody dining room, so that, “the white paneled walls could pop more,” she explains. But, this is the Hamptons, so white rules the roost in the living room and sun room, which are separated by a double-sided fireplace.

Outside, Janczur concentrated on placing ferns and low-flowering plants, “that seem like a woodland carpet,” he says. “Since the home sits on the main street, I tried to avoid making it seem like we stuck in a garden where it doesn’t belong.” The lush setting fulfills Dankner’s need for multiple entertaining areas while telegraphing a relaxed, no-nonsense elegance that befits its breezy, beachy locale. So whether Dankner decides to host a large poolside gala or a close friend stops by at a moment’s notice, the dignified hostess is always ready.

In the light-filled front entry, the traditional Dutch door is a welcoming addition, while the natural limestone flooring and both paned and open windows signal the eclectic mix of modern and traditional elements ahead. ic and Dena Hammel weren’t in the market for a new home. That is until they discovered the perfect house just three doors away on desirable Mecox Road. The Pennsylvania couple, who have made Bridgehampton their second home for nearly two decades, had recently met with designers on maximizing space in their current residence to accommodate visiting adult children and six grandchildren when they noticed a new construction nearby. “We were already in our dream house, and I never felt like we needed anything more,” recalls Dena of her traditional Shingle-style home she had decorated with country antiques. “But I just wanted to take a look inside—I guess that’s what all women say, I suppose!” Outfitted with fine oak finishes, an open floor plan free of hallways and a traditional-meets-modern aesthetic, Dena recognized that the house was the embodiment of her own minimalist sensibilities: “It took my breath away,” she says. “It was so unusual and understated, down to

the magnificent 100-year-old chestnut tree out front.” In a particularly felicitous turn, a For Sale sign soon went up, and the owners quickly purchased the house, which was conceived in a collaborative effort by architect James Merrell and builder Peter Cardel. “I envisioned it as a modern house bursting from a Colonial,” recalls Merrell, the visionary who joined the team on the basis that they create something different from the archetypal Hamptons home. Originally, a circa-1800 farmhouse stood on the property. “It was not a substantial house; it was more like a farmhand’s home,” says Cardel of the structure the team removed to build anew. But the team envisioned a home that would keep that history alive, and so, Cardel partnered with Merrell to bring about the idea of a modern farmhouse that, in the same way, would stand the test of time. Within the wide, U-shaped floor plan, the design team took advantage of the light that floods every room. Because of the unobstructed north- and south-facing views, the walls were washed in a neutral color palette

Architect James Merrell conceived of the minimal barn-style house with nods to both historical Hamptons and a Belgian sensibility, seen through the shingled exterior and the main entry unexpectedly located on the south-facing end of the house.

and furniture-grade oak paneling, creating a blank canvas for the Hammels’ longtime designer, Franco Biscardi, and his partner, architect Brian Brady, to create the serene interiors. “In the family room, they wanted one nice seating group, so we scaled up the upholstered pieces to accommodate the deep space,” says Brady, who fashioned a richly layered design scheme. Bespoke upholstery and a natural-toned rug underfoot blend comfortably with standout accents, from vintage iron and travertine-topped tables to a white plaster chandelier based on a Giacometti design. The duo also used window treatments sparingly to further enhance the clean lines of each space. 114 / luxe interiors + design

Of course, picking up on the long-standing beach house tradition, the heart of the home is the al fresco dining terrace paved with limestone and framed by picture windows. “The patio is my husband’s favorite spot and we have a massive picnic table that he insisted on. That was his only wish, to have a table that could seat the entire family,” says Hammel with a smile. And in the end, what started as a functional farmhouse turned out to be a chic, simplistic retreat—one that encompasses the ease of Hamptons living combined with the comfort and harmony of familial ties.

Cedar shingles and traditional barn doors define the family’s quaint single-car garage and pool house that is situated off the main entry.
