BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

ALPHONSO LASCANO BJORN FARRUGIA 424.253.5489

A

lphonso Lascano and Bjorn Farrugia of Hilton & Hyland have been staples of the Los Angeles Westside real estate market for a combined 15 years. Their expertise in the high end luxury real estate market has helped establish the team as a dominant force in the industry, leading the pack in one of the most complex and demanding locales in the world. One of the team’s key talents that most sets them apart from others is their ability to consistently sell homes that have stagnated on the open market for months. “We thrive in all disciplines of interior design. We are constantly re-purposing outdated homes; redesigning them to optimize their ‘sell-ability’, which, in turn, maximizes our clientèle’s profits,” according to Lascano. “Relationships with our clients come first,” says Farrugia. “We strive to build a trusting rapport that allows us to not only efficiently deliver on any request our clients may have, but to also offer insight and expertise on topics they aren’t even aware of yet.”

EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

CONTRIBUTORS

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

JOANNA MCCLURE

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

Designed by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Aegean collection, available in aluminum and teak, is a study in uncluttered minimalism.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

RADAR / DEBUT

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

SHELF LIFE

THE DESIGN INFLUENCERS BEHIND LOS ANGELES’ SIGNATURE AESTHETIC MAKE FOR PERFECT BOOKSHELF FODDER; HERE ARE FOUR EXCELLENT NEW ADDITIONS TO THE LITERARY DESIGN CANON IN SOCAL.

WILLIAM KRISEL’S PALM SPRINGS Chris Menrad and Heidi Creighton

THE WORLD OF CHARLES AND RAY EAMES Catherine Ince There aren’t many designers as distinctly synonymous with California as Charles and Ray Eames. While myriad books exist on the beloved design duo’s work, few encompass the private side that existed behind their superstar public personas as well as this tome. Editor Catherine Ince, a curator at London’s Barbican Art Gallery—which hosted a major exhibition developed in partnership with the Eames estate last October—offers an in-depth exploration of the important ideas and ideals that defined the Eames Office throughout its extraordinary history. In addition to a fresh selection of commissioned texts by leading design experts, the book also shares reviews and reveals magazine articles written by the Eameses themselves. rizzoliusa.com

HOLLYWOOD INTERIORS: STYLE AND DESIGN IN LOS ANGELES Anthony Iannacci There’s no doubt that, in Hollywood, status is king. And one of the best venues for conveying that status is through the home and its careful curation meant to express its owners’ personalities. This glossy book singles out 19 homes by a variety of Los Angeles-based architects and designers that capture the fiercely individualistic spirit that drives the city. Conveyed through more than 200 full-color images, the stately abodes range from a George H. Fruehling classic Spanish Revival home and new construction by icons such as Richard Meier & Partners Architects to midcentury residences by Harwell Hamilton Harris and John Lautner immaculately restored to glory. monacellipress.com

PAST PERFECT: RICHARD SHAPIRO HOUSES AND GARDENS Richard Shapiro with Mayer Rus A home is something that must be lovingly honed over time, a fact well-known by designer and antiques dealer Richard Shapiro. But most of us aren’t patient enough to slowly acquire items over a lifetime, or even generations, in order to achieve that “oldworld” aesthetic that inherited antiques convey. Instead, Shapiro demonstrates how to cultivate a similar style—whether you lean toward classic European charm or artifacts from far-flung lands— using his own two homes as examples. From replicating the aura of antiquity to addressing the task of integrating centuriesold building materials into new construction, Shapiro delves into his own experience as a designer to shed light on what, at first, might seem like a difficult task. rizzoliusa.com 108 / LUXESOURCE.COM

BLUEPRINT DREAM HOLLYWOOD

Los Angeles’ midcentury modern architecture is an essential part of the city’s quirky charm, a unique combination of California cool and Hollywood glamour. Channeling that breezy elegance, the Dream Hollywood hotel will soon add its own silhouette to the Los Angeles skyline with a chic Richard Neutra-inspired building by the Rockwell Group. Set to open this summer, the hotel— comprising 179 rooms and suites—is expected to become a hub for Hollywood’s elite, with five dining and nightlife venues within and near the hotel. Emphasizing a seamless visual connection between indoors and outdoors, the hotel will feature numerous living garden elements throughout, including strips of grass set between stone tile flooring and trellis-like hall dividers. Perhaps the most exciting element, however, is the sprawling 11,000-squarefoot rooftop, which will prove an enviable vantage point from which to take in stunning city views from its location at the corner of Selma Avenue and North Cahuenga Boulevard, between the Hollywood Hills and downtown Los Angeles. dreamhotels.com

Of the 40,000 residential structures built from architect William Krisel’s modernist designs, 1,500 are located in Palm Springs and Palm Desert. This is the first major monograph to comprehensively chronicle Krisel’s work and his overarching architectural and landscape philosophies, featuring enthralling insights curated from his own personal collection of papers combined with archival information from the Getty Research Institute. Complementing the architect’s drawings and renderings, an array of photographs help reveal the story behind his custom and mass-produced housing and his lauded career in general. gibbs-smith.com

PLEASE DO NOT ENTER When did you open? Our very first guests were welcomed into our curated store at 549 S. Olive St. in April 2014. Why downtown L.A.? We simply fell in love with the area and its truly creative vibe. It also has the urban spirit and density that Los Angeles was missing for more than fi ve decades. Describe the space. Being an interior designer as well as a co-founder, Emmanuel Renoird designed the store. He conceived a bright, neutral yet elegant space that could be used equally for retail displays or art exhibitions. Lit monumental shelves and modular boxes serve as versatile displays. Please Do Not Enter shares its real commitment to art, fashion and design through ambitious exhibitions and genuine productions. It plays with an ambiguous and hybrid format, mixing classic retail and progressive art gallery. On the floor? Expect to fi nd a curated selection of rare pieces in fashion, art, design, accessories and books that are designed to be lived with and to inspire day after day. pleasedonotenter.com

CHRISTY MATSON AND JANE PALMER MATSON + PALMER United by a love for creating functional objects using fine-art techniques, Christy Matson and Jane Palmer of Matson + Palmer craft one-of-a-kind, naturally dyed, handwoven cashmere blankets and pillows. Conveying the story of each item is key to their creative process—and it helps if they can make a positive difference at the same time. Their chic wares blend traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic, using cashmere yarn hand-spun by a woman’s co-op in Afghanistan, helping those who have lost husbands in the war. Then there’s the alpaca wool used in their rugs, which comes from U.S. farms that are working hard to bring the fading industry back to the states. And keeping things local in the city they love, the duo also use surplus linen sourced from the Los Angeles denim industry. Here, they reveal what they would consider a day well spent in Los Angeles. matsonpalmer.com 9 a.m. Congrats! to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

GROW

INTO THE WILD

THE PIECE: Geometric Drum Tables THE DESIGNER: Samuel Amoia FIND IT: itzanahome.com THE INSPIRATION: Contrast is everything when it comes to design, and here, the collision of French Deco influences employed by Belizean artisanal techniques have resulted in a subtle impact of beauty and strength.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.

MONICA KHEMSUROV AND JILL SINGER

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS SIGHTUNSEEN.COM

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

RACHEL BENTLEY AND CARLY NANCE

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS THE-CITIZENRY.COM

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

FLORA FLAUNT THE PIECE: Twig Branch Table THE DESIGNER: George Massar for Gregorius Pineo FIND IT: gregoriuspineo.com; hollyhunt.com THE INSPIRATION: As if rooted to the ground in which its placed, the Twig Branch table is lively and playfully complex, assembled of composite stone to make it agreeable both inside and out.

GROWTH SPURT THE PIECE: Domicile G Stool THE DESIGNER: Michael Vanderbyl FIND IT: bolierco.com THE INSPIRATION: Eliciting notes of midcentury modern design with an inflection on African folk art, the Domicile G stool is a mellifluous blend of contemporary and traditional cultures.

ANNA BOND

ARTIST AND PRODUCT DESIGNER RIFLEPAPERCO.COM

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

PHOTOS: LISA COHEN.

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 152 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

SET THE TONE SERENA & LILY

No dinner party is complete without pretty table linens. Fine textiles can transform a table from casual to formal and back again, adding an element of the tailored and well-planned to even the most impromptu gathering. Here, Serena & Lily’s Jewel napkin joins the Chatham napkin and runner and the brand’s raffia placemat and Cove rattan lantern in a dreamy coastal-inspired tablescape. serenaandlily.com 156 / LUXESOURCE.COM

INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

THE CHALLENGE: Create a full renovation and refresh for a full-of-potential, but dated, 1971 ranch house off Mulholland Drive that was recently acquired by a Hollywood producer. THE WORK: Architect Amelia Stephenson and the interior design team of Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe were hired for strategic editing. “It was incredible how the house didn’t capitalize on the view,” says Stephenson. The panoramic, classic L.A. vista of the San Fernando Valley had to be glimpsed through “undersized and frame-heavy” openings. The team removed interior walls and exposed the

back of the house to the landscape. Designer Nancy Heller transformed the grounds into lush tropical havens, put in “as much greenery as possible,” and added a fireside seating area, all perched dramatically on the edge of the Valley. THE RESULT: Nickey and Kehoe layered on what Kehoe describes as “earthy elegance,” bringing in Pigalle lounge chairs from Janus et Cie to face a sofa from Malibu Market & Design, with colorful woven poufs from Serena & Lily. “Some open-plan living areas can feel cold, but this one exudes warmth,” says Nickey.

THE CHALLENGE: Create a fashionable yet cozy Mediterraneanstyle abode for a small family—in a city like Los Angeles, where drama is a prized commodity. THE WORK: Enter designer Estee Stanley, a celebrity stylist who creates equally fashionable residences through her interior design firm. Stanley implicitly understood her clients’ desire for merging theatricality with approachability. That said, drama is nothing if not tricky. Stanley cleverly composed a palette of finishes that comes from nature and left the drama to a select few touches that really pack a punch. It all starts with the entry courtyard, where sculpted hedges and a water feature set a formal tone, while stone frog statues from Inner Gardens lend a whimsical touch. A teak gate offers a warm counterpoint to the concrete pavers. THE RESULT: From inside to out, the home exudes the clearest manifestation of down-toearth indulgence. Stanley pulled off the task thanks to her keen intuition for designs that strike a balance between gorgeous and practical. “I really try to make every space beautiful, and maybe even sexy, but above all, livable,” says Stanley. 164 / LUXESOURCE.COM

166 / LUXESOURCE.COM

THE CHALLENGE: Site and design a gracious Italian-style residence on the Malibu coast that is reminiscent of a Tuscan farmhouse, with views of the Queen’s Necklace. THE WORK: The couple called Appleton & Associates, a firm whose projects are recognized for their sensitive contextual style, and hired architect Paul Williger, who was working at the firm at the time. Wanting to add a few surprising layers, Williger oriented the structure to frame the Pacific, but sited it so that as the owners approach the ocean-side façade, they are redirected through two onestory garage pavilions, a motor court and then a lush entry garden. In addition to the careful siting, working with materials and proportions

that felt authentic was crucial. “A lot of people build Mediterranean houses that don’t look right because they get the proportions and finishes wrong,” explains the husband. Williger scaled the structure so that “it’s convincing, without being overwhelming,” says the architect, who also “built patina into the house” by using recycled terra-cotta roof tiles, antique pavers and about 140 reclaimed barn timbers. THE RESULT: The home’s siting and authentic materials and proportions were key, particularly given the voluminous size of the structure. “The architecture, in its purity, allowed for creative license with the interior design,” says designer Philip Nimmo. “It’s not contrived at all.”

GREEN SCENE As summer descends, more than just perennials are coming to life again: With the longer days and warmer weather, homes across the country are beginning to bloom, unfurling out into handsome outdoor spaces and onto beautifully manicured lawns. It’s all the inspiration their inhabitants need to leave their cozy perches on the sofa behind for sun-drenched spots on covered porches, well-equipped backyard kitchens and bright blue pools with serious appeal. On the following pages, go green with some of the season’s prettiest outdoor living spaces.

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

THRILL OF THE

CHAISE

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

TAKE SHELTER

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

HEDGE YOUR BETS

What truly makes outdoor spaces exceptional isn’t just natural beauty; though, it’s hard to think of a more serene scene than a private pool secreted away behind extra-tall hedges, like in this handsome setting designed by Los Angeles’ Schuyler Samperton. Instead, it’s the combination of beauty and function (think no prying eyes to ogle that cute two-piece while you’re taking a dip) that keeps inhabitants and visitors alike coming back. samperton.com

MODERNITY + ELEGANCE

IN THE OPEN AIR Known for aesthetic refinement and diversity, Los Angeles offers a unique perspective on outdoor living. Sculptors, home builders, surface providers and other residential design professionals are recognizing a demand for elegance both indoors and out. Read on to discover the state of today’s alfresco environment from local design luminaries.

DEMETRIOS SCULPTURE Given their proximity to nature, outdoor living spaces are inherently inspiring. But for residents of the western parts of the United States, owing to the incredible weather and year-round sunshine, an alfresco setting can be taken to new heights by an addition from Demetrios Sculpture. Led by its namesake, artist Aristides Burton Demetrios, the company has become known for one-of-a-kind masterpieces, gracing the gardens of some of the most magnificent homes in Southern and Northern California. Demetrios is most famous for his bronze fountains, although his stainless-steel, bronze volumetric and painted steel abstract or figurative pieces are equally cherished by their owners and admired by visitors. Of the advice he would give to homeowners beginning an outdoor project, Demetrios says, “They should think about their outdoor space as they would their interiors. Be cognizant of the views and boundaries; have a dramatic piece that creates a ‘wow’ factor; and ensure that the art, furnishings, gardens and landscaping complement the views and architecture.”

THE VALUE OF SCULPTURE + Bronze fountains and abstract pieces in the garden can make a dramatic statement. + The addition of a Demetrios sculpture to a residential or commercial project dramatically enhances the project by making a unique and artistic statement about the juxtaposition of art and architecture. 1. The bronze fountain shown above is the centerpiece of a residential rose garden. Its title, The Gathering, signifies its role as a place for the owners and their guests to come together. 2. The figurative bronze piece in the upper right, My Soul is Dancing, is the centerpiece in a garden of annuals, perennials and roses under a massive oak tree. 3. This sculpture, titled My Space, frames the entry to a contemporary Spanish-style home. 1

Outdoor spaces should be inviting and conducive to contemplation while evoking a sense of peaceful well-being.

DESIGN HARDWARE AND FLOORING At Design Hardware and Flooring, every aspect of outdoor living is considered. The hardware and flooring supplier specializes in products for both the interior and exterior of a home, making it a key resource when creating cohesive, indoor-outdoor environments. Director of marketing Michele Solomons notes that the extension of indoor space to the open air has become a priority for homeowners, as has environmental consciousness. “What’s inspiring us right now is sustainability being married to what is unique and elegant in a home, both inside and out,” Solomons says. “It is possible now to find materials that maintain high quality and design while being environmentally beneficial.” Of her advice to those beginning a project, Solomons points to thoughtful understanding of end goals. “Know the following three things without question: your lifestyle needs, your design preferences and your budget,” she says.

A well-designed outdoor space should have balance between design and durability, as well as form and function.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS: RESYSTA + THERMOWOOD “Resysta and Thermowood are our two favorite products right now,” Solomons says. “They are similar in that they are both innovative products advancing the technology of building materials, yet they have some key differences. Thermowood takes solid wood, one of the oldest building materials, and makes it more functional and durable while retaining its inherent elegance and beauty. On the other hand, Resysta has all the best characteristics of wood—the look, feel and ease of use—yet it is made without wood and therefore without as much maintenance.”

In sharing his inspiration to found the firm, Besharat reveals one of his favorite materials. “I have always loved landscape design and surfaces specific to enhancing exterior environments,” Besharat says. “My first real inspiration came from Italian porphyry. When I saw how that stone endured over centuries of civilization, I felt I could bring that wonderful sense of antiquity to commercial and residential projects in the United States.”

Surfaces that repurpose raw materials are highly sought after, particularly for exterior projects, where the materials interact with the natural world.

Architect Marc Appleton collaborated with landscape designer Lisa Zeder to reimagine the gardens surrounding a Beverly Hills home Appleton renovated for East Coast-based clients. At the entry, an olive tree and planted borders lend color, structure and movement to the approach.

T

he temptation of Spanish Colonial Revival homes is often to lay on the period furnishings to make them feel “authentic.” But going the whole Iberian nine yards—with the style’s love of all things dark, formal and heavily carved— can sometimes feel ill-suited to the casual-contemporary living that attracts people to California in the first place. That was especially true for designer Mona Hajj’s clients, an empty-nester couple from the East Coast. “Having worked with them several times in the past, I found that we all share the fact that we don’t like to take anything literally,” says the bicoastal Hajj. “We try to mix it up while 198 / LUXESOURCE.COM

always respecting the architecture of the house.” In this case, the home in question was a 1920s abode in Beverly Hills the clients had tasked architect Marc Appleton with refreshing and restoring. “The house was done with a certain amount of detail and charm,” says Appleton, who worked with senior associate Andrew Scott on the project. “Everyone wanted to keep the original architectural flavor intact.” But what Appleton initially walked into was hardly original: a pinkwalled stairwell with black risers, fussy wallpapers, a concrete patio out back, decidedly un-Spanish sliders leading to the pool, and even several doorways whose

In the entry hall, designer Mona Hajj placed a runner with a Greek-key pattern on the stair. Purchased from Crescent Carpet Importers in New York, it introduces the modern element of an overscaled graphic to a selection of antique rugs, an English 19th-century walnut chair and an early 20th-century Venetian mirror, all Hajj’s discoveries from her travels.

Exotic touches come in the form of Asian-inspired vintage mirrors—flanking the antique mantel from Exquisite Surfaces—and a collection of ceramics from around the globe. Hajj designed the Art Deco-style gilt chair that sits atop a 19th-century Sultanabad rug in the living room; the console behind is a 19th-century Irish George III-style piece. Overlooking the grouping is a collection of custom-framed French hand-pressed flowers and leaves on a wall painted in Seashell from Benjamin Moore.

Spanish arches had been made level. “They had tried to make it modern,” says the wife of the home’s previous owners. “But we’re not retro ’70s people. We always want it to look classic but feel timeless and fresh, elegant yet simple.” Appleton’s task involved bringing a cosmetic hand to renovations, repainting everything white, lightening floors and the original ceiling beams, and stripping down the stair railing (“We took the folly out of it,” explains builder Doc Williamson of the rail, which had been overcomplicated with floral ornamentation). And because, Appleton says, “We all wanted to bring more light into the house,” the project took a much more ambitious turn. Beyond liberating the imprisoned kitchen by opening it to the family room, the plans called for cutting a large window into one wall and 202 / LUXESOURCE.COM

adding a fenestrated breakfast bay. He also replaced the family room sliders with generous, more graceful arched French doors that now open onto a new loggia. Outside, Appleton collaborated with landscape designer Lisa Zeder. For his part, he swapped in concrete for new pool coping, laid fossil creek stone in an ashlar pattern under the loggia and around the pool, and—between the house and a garage-guest cottage (which also got a complete makeover)—placed a fountain surrounded with limestone pavers neatly defined by grass borders. Zeder says, “I designed the horticultural components of the garden, choosing plant materials that were true to and complementary to the architecture while bringing in the softness the client was seeking.” She also incorporated varied shades of green with subtle infusions of color for a rich and interesting palette.

Gregorius Pineo chairs from KneedlerFauchère in a Le Gracieux damask and windows dressed with a linen floral by Kathryn M. Ireland bring color and pattern into the dining room. The high polish of Rose Tarlow Melrose House’s Pickwick dining table, a 1940s Jansen chandelier and a 19th-century Venetian mirror reflect the natural light.

Just off the kitchen in the family room, the A. Rudin sofa’s floral upholstery complements a pair of swiveling Dessin Fournir club chairs and a blue Gregorius Pineo sofa, both from KneedlerFauchère. Chinese ceramic jar lamps from Rose Tarlow Melrose House and an early 20th-century French chandelier from Hajj’s inventory provide lighting.

Hajj took on the interiors, working, as always, instinctually. “When I put color schemes together, it’s not about matching,” she explains. “In the family room, for example, one sofa has a William Morris fabric and the other a textured dark blue material. The Tabriz carpet has nothing to do with either, but it feels good.” In the same room are a French gilt-metal chandelier, a Buddha atop a dairy table and blue-and-white pottery in niches around a built-in television cabinet. Interspersed are antique textiles, some Turkish, others English and American. “When I travel I always collect antique textiles,” she notes, adding, “I love mixing cultures. It’s calming for me.” Likewise, the living room pulls together unlikely characters that nevertheless get along famously: A 19th-century William and Mary-style sofa’s serpentine back and turned spindle legs and stretchers read vaguely Spanish, while the collection of vintage ceramics hints at the historic cultural exchanges that have happened in Spain. Yet we also find, surprisingly, custom Hajj-designed Art Deco-inspired chairs, a table rich with chinoiserie details, Khotan and Sultanabad rugs, and an English side LUXESOURCE.COM / 207

Elger Esser’s large-scale C-print, Macon II, France, from Sonnabend Gallery in New York brings a contemporary edge to two late19th-century neoclassical-style French gilt-wood fauteuils and a 20th-century George III-style piecrust table in the living room— all grounded by antique carpets. The wood flooring throughout is from Exquisite Surfaces.

table and antique Irish consoles. “There’s a common thread, with the architecture referring to Spanish Colonial and some of the leg styles and dark woods acting as references,” says Hajj. “But they’re not literal.” A similar mix appears in the rest of the house, with a combination of Italian, English, American and Spanish furnishings accented by textiles and accessories from several stops on the Silk Road—Persia, Turkey and the like. Because this was the couple’s second home, Hajj also paid particular attention to her clients’ desire to capture an easy California lifestyle, with seating placing a premium

on comfort. “It doesn’t matter if it’s beautiful,” says Hajj of the furnishings. “If you can’t sit on a chair and enjoy it, it won’t be in their house.” In the end, against Appleton’s reinvigorated canvas, which took a tired 20th-century home and turned it into an elegant and classic residence suited to the 21st century, the results are layered and thoughtful, with Hajj achieving a careful balance in the furnishings that skews neither literal nor hyper-modern. For the designer, the process and the result are equally compelling. “I love creating,” she says, “and I love seeing it come together in the end.”

EYE CANDY OPTING FOR UNEXPECTED MATERIALS AND SURREAL SILHOUETTES, A LOS ANGELES ARTIST RESHAPES THE BOUNDARIES OF A DIVERSE CREATIVE PRACTICE. WRITTEN BY MIMI FAUCETT / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIM NEWBERRY

Los Angeles artist and designer Elyse Graham (opposite, top) demonstrates the process of crafting her playful vases by pouring liquid plaster into a balloon, which serves as a mold; a work in progress (below) rests on a table in the studio. Graham adds the finishing touches to a piece (left). Notes, sketches and fragments (opposite, bottom) fill a surface in the studio.

M

y background is in sculpture and my art-and-design practice has always been based on experimentation and play,” says Los Angeles-based artist and designer Elyse Graham. Spurred by a desire to create more accessible work, Graham’s portfolio has now expanded to include functional objects for the home. “I knew I didn’t want to make pieces that would be sequestered to storage or shelved in my studio,” she says. Graham’s wares are characterized by an evolving variation of off-kilter shapes in a spectrum of vibrating neon hues and saturated pastels, and her process is as playful as the many candy-colored shades. In her Drip series, for instance, Graham uses a balloon as a mold to manipulate plaster into an eggshell-thin, hollow form, and then fills that shape with resin allowing it to drip from the vase’s opening. “I love working with materials in new ways,” she explains. “I’d already been experimenting with balloons in my art practice, and the idea for the vases came as I challenged myself to

make a functional object using the techniques and materials I employ in my art making.” Until recently, Graham had produced her work in-house—her downtown Los Angeles studio includes a ventilated resin room—but lately, the artist has begun pushing her practice further, taking her existing forms to a foundry to create special edition cast-bronze pieces. “This process of experimentation, although often rife with failures, leads to my most interesting work,” she notes. Her range of collections, now boasting a newly introduced group of pendants and sconces, intentionally remains in conversation with one another, by way of seductive materiality and imaginative silhouettes. While conceptualizing her latest offering, affectionately nicknamed “the weirdos,” Graham looked to principles of cellular biology, resulting in a whimsical assemblage of vibrantly colored pieces suited to the world of Dr. Seuss. “I hope to create objects that provoke thought and wonder,” the artist muses. “I define my success by the curious look or amused smirk that comes across a person’s face when they see a finished product.”

“I CHALLENGED MYSELF TO MAKE A FUNCTIONAL OBJECT USING THE TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS I EMPLOY IN MY ART MAKING.”

BEACH MODERN CRISP LINES MAKE FOR A STYLISH OCEANSIDE SPOT FOR WEEKEND GETAWAYS ON A RARE MALIBU LOCATION OVERLOOKING THE PACIFIC. WRITTEN BY JENNIFER SERGENT / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERHARD PFEIFFER

ARCHITECTURE / RICHARD MANION, RICHARD MANION ARCHITECTURE HOME BUILDER / RICK HOLZ, RICHARD HOLZ INC. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE / MARK BEALL, MARK BEALL & ASSOCIATES

A

stylistic hodgepodge of a house on a desirable stretch of Malibu beach had little in the way of aesthetics to offer architect Richard Manion’s clients, who were on the hunt for a weekend retreat. The expansive footprint and existing pool, however, proved irresistible, so the couple turned to Manion to help them create a minimalist getaway. In contrast to their more traditional New England-style residence in Los Angeles, also designed by Manion, “We all wanted to explore a contemporary vocabulary from the start that would be clean, warm and inviting,” he says. The challenges along the way were numerous, including a steeply sloping and skinny lot, height limitations to protect

neighbors’ beach views, a footprint dictated by the existing house, and a public beach-access path that ran down the side of the property—not to mention aging plumbing systems near the water that had to be replaced and moved closer to the street. To begin the project, Manion and his team gutted everything. The guiding principle thereafter was “the idea of a very pure, modern shape with the interest being in the geometry,” he notes. The L-shaped plan wraps around the pool and spa, with the views from the living room and master bedroom above focusing on a peninsula in the distance. The approach plays well to what he aimed to achieve: an elegant yet opaque mass at the street level LUXESOURCE.COM / 219

In the dining area of a Malibu beach house—reimagined by architect Richard Manion—Pierre Jeanneret’s circa-1950s Committee chairs surround a custom Corian table from Wise Living. Builder Rick Holz had his team slice limestone into flagstone-shaped tiles for a seamless transition between the indoors and the terrace beyond.

that hides its surprises. “We wanted the front of the house to be very monumental, very solid and very dense,” says the architect. The solid walls screen a neighbor to one side, and landscape architect Mark Beall installed a ficus hedge on the other side that conceals the property from the public beach path. “In the back, we wanted it to be the opposite— as much glass as possible to take in the views,” adds Manion. The nearly all-steel framing allowed the architect to create entire walls of glass that nonetheless meet strict earthquake codes. The resulting glass doors lift and stack along each end of every façade, offering access to the outdoors, erasing boundaries between inside and out. Manion’s introduction to the interior starts off as more enclosed and secretive, not revealing the knockout view yet to come. It begins with a breathtaking atrium in the foyer, where a skylight sends light spilling down a curving staircase. “The staircase kind of floats in that three-story cavity and just attaches where necessary,” says builder Rick Holz. From there, Manion conceived the house as a progression from one moment to the next, where nothing is revealed all at once. “A lot of what we discussed was how things unfold as you walk through the house,” says the wife. “It’s all about how you experience the home in different ways.” A hallway from the foyer, for example, leads to the prize: a split-level living, dining and family room with limestone floors that continue out to a beachside terrace through glass walls, some topping nearly 10 feet and almost disappearing when pulled back. “We spend almost all of our time there with all the doors open,” the wife says. The ovens are by Miele, and the cooktop is Gaggenau.

The warm, creamy stucco on the home’s exterior seamlessly flows inside with plaster colored to match, so none of the walls were painted. “It has this great modernistic simplicity, but it’s not cold like a museum— it’s warm and soft,” Manion says. Against this backdrop, furnishings by such 20th-century masters as Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret fill the home. They look utterly of the moment within Manion’s starkly modern context. And although the walls and floors evoke the color of sand, the rest of the palette takes its cues from the landscape. As the wife puts it, “I like the juxtaposition of the beach setting against our contemporary home and furnishings.” Beall made sure the exterior landscape spoke the same modern, elegantly spare language as the rest of the home. There was little he could plant in the ground because of the pool and terrace in back and the plumbing infrastructure underneath the driveway in front, so instead he devised a series of highly sculptural living vignettes in pots by Belgium-based Atelier Vierkant. Beall explored a variety of options before he came up with the right plants that were both shapely and sturdy amid the salty ocean breeze. “Keeping the modern theme going with these beautiful pots and textural plants was the direction we wanted to go,” says Beall. Manion credits all the site’s challenges—in addition to the lengthy permitting process and coastal storms that interrupted construction more than once—for bringing out the best in all the members of the design team. “It was a very unusual opportunity for us,” he says. “But we were all so excited by what we were able to make of it.”

WITH THEIR CHIC LINE OF FURNISHINGS AND A SHOP BRIMMING WITH NEW AND VINTAGE FINDS, A COSTA MESA COUPLE BRING A VIBRANT DIMENSION TO THE ORANGE COUNTY DESIGN SCENE. WRITTEN BY LAURA MORGAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC STONER

I

t’s not hard to imagine one of Charlie’s Angels reclining on a Haskell Series 9 chaise. But Costa Mesa-based Andrew Stoneman and Laura Haskell’s supremely stylish collection of furniture—think sleek lines and retro vibes—doesn’t just conjure that 1970s-era grooviness, it’s pulled distinctly into the now with its use of quality recycled, sustainable and locally fabricated materials. “We wanted to create an heirloom product,” says Stoneman, “something that is fun and flexible, but that you can be proud to hand down.” The couple founded Haskell in 2008, capitalizing on their experience in a range of fields. Stoneman’s background is in architectural and engineering sales, and he is also wellversed in steel (indeed, many of Haskell’s outdoor pieces use the metal) and exhibit design. Haskell is a fabric whisperer with a fashion degree, and has sourced materials for clients ranging from Paul Smith to Donna Karan. Dissatisfied by the furniture offerings available for their own yard, they decided to take matters into their own hands. “I didn’t want to spend a million dollars on a vintage chaise,” Stoneman says, “so I thought, ‘I’ll make something I like more and do it with domestic materials.’ ” Today, Stoneman spends much of his time in the couple’s fabrication shop designing, building and perfecting their pieces—coming soon is an adult-friendly beanbag that Haskell is particularly excited about. Meanwhile, Haskell sources goods, refurbishes furniture and minds their slightly off-the-beaten-path retail outpost, a wood-clad former farmhouse tucked behind a commercial building on 17th Street. The boutique’s eclectic-chic merchandise “draws on our multicultural and multiregional life experiences,” says Haskell—bringing a vibrant spirit to the Orange County design scene and the many fans that come along with it. And the reasons are in plain view, as the store serves as a conduit for their services and caters to residential and commercial customers looking for special pieces or custom builds. Clients are also falling for the shop’s modern-hippy wares including locally made ceramics, vintage fashion and global textiles. Says Haskell, “You can walk in with $20 and walk out with something beautiful.” Sold. 234 / LUXESOURCE.COM

P

erched on an Irvine hilltop, a rare park-like property had designer Carolyne Ferguson’s clients falling hard. At just over an acre, the expansive spot offered the couple a chance to build a house that was at once supremely private yet open to the surrounding views. “I could see this house in my mind,” says the wife, who envisioned a simple and elegant but unpretentious family retreat where grandchildren and dogs could roam comfortably. To realize her dream home, she turned to Ferguson, a friend of nearly 30 years. “I know what she likes and I think that comes from being very good friends,” says the designer. “We’re on the same page, and I know her sense of style; she would be most comfortable in a house with a cottage-like feel.” Working with friends can be dicey, but in this case the decades-long friendship turned out to be a recipe for success. The couple and the team—Ferguson, architect Carlos Elenes, builder Robert Ferguson (Carolyne Ferguson’s husband) and landscape designer Greg Grisamore—met frequently to collaborate on the project and create a unified vision for the home. “We knew exactly where everything

was going to go right from the beginning,” says Carolyne Ferguson. So the team faced the challenge of designing a 15,000-square-foot home that also managed to feel intimate and comfortable. Elenes took advantage of the lot’s depth, which allowed him to give the architecture a layered feel. For example, the home’s entry sequence includes a wrought-iron gate that leads to an understated door with an old-world feel and into a courtyard that brings visitors to the home’s antique front door and H-shaped floor plan. With the footprint, Elenes was able to create multiple courtyards to maximize the amount of light coming into the rooms, which he carefully proportioned to create the cozy vibe the wife desired. “The majority of the rooms have fenestration on two, if not three, sides, providing the home with natural light and ventilation while giving the couple spectacular unobstructed views of the canyon,” says Elenes. To maintain the authentic rustic-French style the clients desired, Elenes turned to books and personal photographs of Provençal travels. And, says Robert Ferguson, “We imported many materials, including the antique roof tiles, reclaimed stone and tile flooring,

European-wood flooring, antique doors and light fixtures.” Working in tandem with superintendent Michael Karkut, Robert Ferguson orchestrated a veritable symphony of pieces, given the magnitude and detail of the project. “Coordination of materials and subcontractors were key to achieving the desired results,” notes the builder. While the architecture leans more toward country French, the interiors take many of their cues from farther north. “After listening to the wife, I suggested Gustavian style for the cabinets,” says Carolyne Ferguson, referring to the 18th-century Swedish interpretation of neoclassical French taste. The designer tapped Marilynn B. Gilbert, a friend and mentor, to collaborate on the cabinetry—with its mix of Gustavian and traditional French features— and chose light neutrals for the walls, flooring, stone, countertops and furnishings. “Soft contemporary furnishings and rustic elements such as silk-burlap fabrics and raw natural woods were included in the mix for eye-catching interest,” Carolyne Ferguson explains. “I designed custom furniture to accommodate room size and proportion. These pieces enhanced the Gustavian style, specifically the painted dining room buffet and the custom

“SOFT CONTEMPORARY FURNISHINGS AND A MIX OF RUSTIC ELEMENTS WERE INCLUDED FOR EYE-CATCHING INTEREST.” -CAROLYNE FERGUSON

Carolyne Ferguson enlisted designer and friend Marilynn B. Gilbert for the kitchen cabinetry’s design, which was fabricated by Woodsman’s Cabinetry. Two separate islands topped with honed Carrara marble from Marbleworks provide easy access to the La Cornue CornuFé stainless-steel range from Renwes Sales. The antique fireback is from Jan de Luz in Carmel Valley, California.

dining room table with the zinc-inlay tabletop.” Lighting— some sourced abroad and other elements produced locally—add to the authentic feel of the home. Also joining the mélange were many of the clients’ own furnishings, artwork and accessories. “It was a true team effort,” says the designer, with the results creating a layered feel. In his vision for the landscape, Grisamore captured some Provençal spirit, too, lining the driveway with sycamores and incorporating olive trees and lavender into his plant palette. He strove “to give each outdoor room its own identity, a balance between function and aesthetics,” he says. The entertainment courtyard, for instance, boasts an outdoor fireplace and seating area with plenty of room for large parties, allowing guests to meander across a geometric arrangement of stones set in the lawn. When not in use, the space reads as more garden-like, with the grass tempering the hardscape. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the entire team and their attention to detail, the couple’s vision came to fruition. “The home is breathtaking, and it is remarkable that we could coordinate so well together to achieve such a spectacular home,” says Carolyne Ferguson. “On a personal level, I love the relationship I have with the wife. We can get together for lunch and be the best of friends; then we can meet and discuss strictly the business at hand. Not many friends could endure nearly 30 years of combining both.”

Through custom doors from Millworks Etc. a covered terrace off the family room makes for a sheltered outdoor dining area furnished with the clients’ own table and RH chairs. Lanterns from J. Nicolas Architectural Imported Hardware hang from beams from Vintage Timberworks.

Above: Landscape designer Greg Grisamore conceived a series of distinctive outdoor rooms around the property, including a courtyard off the great room. Bemus Landscape was responsible for the landscape installation. The antique roof tiles are from Exquisite Surfaces. Left: A cozy seating arrangement overlooks the courtyard, with pavers from Orange County Stone lining its perimeter. Rattan chairs and an unusual wire-grid coffee table—both from RJ Imports— join a settee from the owners’ collection to complete the scene.

Above: Carolyne Ferguson placed a settee and desk from her clients’ own collection in a hallway. A pair of doors imported from France separates the barrel-ceilinged space. The lanterns are from J. Nicolas Architectural Imported Hardware. Right: In the master bedroom, an antique iron gate became a fanciful headboard, while a chaise from RH is positioned near interior bifold wood shutters, a collaborative effort between Carolyne Ferguson Design and Gilbert. The chandeliers and bedside lamps are by Aidan Gray Home.

MARK DREXLER

We are our clients’ advocates and surrogates, and we have to live up to the trust they have placed in us.

MARK DREXLER + ASSOCIATES Los Angeles, California Santa Barbara, California 310.528.9556 mgd@markdrexlerassociates.com markdrexlerassociates.com

Having experienced a childhood rich with travel, art and architecture, Mark Drexler’s professional pursuits may have been unintentionally developed a near lifetime ago. Led by his parents on transcontinental journeys from a young age, he explored historic buildings and visited art museums. At 13, Drexler began drafting architectural plans for his father, and only two years later, was working alongside a master carpenter building spec homes. The rest, as we say when all the stars beautifully align, is history. Today, the founder of eponymous firm Mark Drexler + Associates is a high-end residential contractor in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The full-service company is recognized for its meticulous workmanship during all phases of construction. “There are always challenges to overcome, and a tremendous amount of information to synthesize and disseminate,” Drexler shares. “I enjoy orchestrating that process.”

How would you describe the personality of your business? If there is one common thread to our approach, it is to emulate the best concierges in the best hotels in the world, with the end result of taking incredible care of our clients. Who or what inspires you most? Our clients, who are highly successful and accomplished people. Interacting with them is tantamount to attending a master class in any number of subjects, and I always appreciate what we gain from these relationships. What do you strive to create when you’re working on a project? What’s most important to you? A collaborative atmosphere, excellent communication and an enjoyable working environment.

How do you stay abreast of new trends and styles? By staying engaged in what is going on in our field, as well as allied disciplines, not just locally, but around the globe—by reading, listening, looking, attending events and continuing to learn. 2

I love my library that I have been building for more than 40 years. This first edition of The Natural House by Frank Lloyd Wright was given to me by my father. 3. I love to ride and have ridden from SF to LA, as well as all of the iconic rides in California and on the West Coast. For me, it is a kinetic meditation for the body and soul.

What are your favorite hobbies? I enjoy being a supporter and founding member of The Civita Institute, an organization that sustains and preserves the legacy of the small town in Italy where I lived and studied as a University of Washington architecture student—Civita di Bagnoregio. I particularly enjoy sharing it with others, and seeing the look on their faces as they approach Civita for the first time. Describe the philosophy behind your firm. Do brilliant work and have fun doing it!

TOMMY CHAMBERS TOMMY CHAMBERS INTERIORS 1146 North Gardner Street Los Angeles, California 323.436.7565 info@tommychambersinteriors.com tommychambersinteriors.com

I believe if human expression is given the chance, it can change the world.

A childhood spent building with Legos, Erector sets and Tinkertoys paved Tommy Chambers’ path to design. Later spending a semester abroad while pursuing his degree in architecture, Chambers credits the exposure to European design as having inspired him to found his firm, Tommy Chambers Interiors. Though he is known for his historic restorations of Mediterranean, Spanish Revival and Spanish Colonial homes, Chambers' classical training affords him the ability to bring his interior design services to any and all architectural styles. Based entirely on referrals, his firm has become known throughout Los Angeles and beyond for its attention to detail from beginning to end. Asked to share his favorite part of the job, Chambers points to his clients. “I enjoy the process of creating interior spaces that reflect my clients’ personalities and interests,” he says. “It’s so gratifying in the end when you have created a home that is endlessly interesting and timeless and executes the client’s personal definition of comfort.”

How do you stay abreast of new trends and styles? Lots of reading, travel and a constant feeding of my never-ending curiosity. I find if you are open to and aware of everything around you, from the most mundane to the most extraordinary, you can tap into the infinite creativity that lies in us all. Describe the philosophy behind your firm. We pride ourselves on providing custom interior designs, for a myriad of styles, executed with the utmost integrity and efficiency. The architects and contractors love working with us because, at the end of the day, we deliver. How do you think your clients would characterize you? I have a wall in my office devoted to the letters and notes from clients over the years. One of my favorites: “He does what he does because he loves it and takes joy in transcending the obvious choices.”

1. Provincetown, Massachusetts, my favorite place on earth. It boasts the oldest continuous art colony in our nation and is home to the Cape Cod National Seashore park. Inspiration abounds. Photo by John Arsenault. 2. I love integrating fun, quirky pieces into my interiors, like this custom-designed Richard Petty chair for a car-collecting client. 3. My books are my refuge. I ran out of shelf space long ago. I now resort to stacking and piling them to form side tables and such. My number one go-to decorating book: Mark Hampton on Decorating.

Who or what inspires you most? I had the great privilege of apprenticing with Joan Axelrod for five years early in my career. To this day, after all this time, she is still who inspires me most. What do you strive to create when you’re working on a project? A sense of calm and confidence with the client. I’ve learned this is achieved by being a good listener and playing my part of a design-build team that shares the core belief that we are there to provide the very best possible for our client. What is your most prized possession? A sketch of a beautiful young woman that my grandmother, Ann Parker, made while attending the Sacker School of Design and Interior Decoration in Boston in the 1930s.

INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
