ooking at the $5 million Malibu estate featured here, one can imagine the collaborative work that brought this stunning home to life. Enter McDonald Development, a full-service real estate development and design firm with a focus on reimagining and transforming aging properties into exceptional signature homes. Led by principal and realtor/developer Andrew McDonald, the company offers the services of expert interior designer, Barrie Livingstone, and veteran designer/builder, Elizabeth Daniels. “There is a true sense of teamwork here, where each individual is given the leeway to lead in their specialty,” McDonald says. “Harnessing our collective potential, which includes our clients, is the key to our successes.”

DESIGN. RENOVATE. BUILD. 310.903.1893

Designing, renovating and building luxury homes in the Los Angeles and Orange County coastal areas, primarily in Malibu and Laguna Beach, this inspired trio takes a holistic approach to every project, seeking to create the ideal environment of harmony and balance, inside and out. As Livingstone says, “Our inspiration is, and always will be, in nature.”

ANDREW MCDONALD REALTOR/DEVELOPER “With more than 20 years of real estate experience, I have been guided by some of the most successful and well-respected experts, specializing in all facets of the business—finance, construction, architecture, design, planning, development and project management.”

BARRIE LIVINGSTONE INTERIOR DESIGNER “Happy, creative and pushing the envelope with out-of-the-box thinking ... that’s my personality. Never satisfied with the status quo, I design by my motto, ‘a room should be beautiful without furniture.’ Good design is livable and tailored to a particular space and location.”

ELIZABETH DANIELS DESIGNER/BUILDER “I’ve spent a lifetime building fine homes, including 25 years in design and project management. My ability to communicate effectively with all tradesmen and my broad understanding of the home building process ensure that projects are masterfully crafted and run smoothly.”

FLEETWOOD WINDOWS & DOORS

The ‘Cadillac’ of Sliding Glass Doors Fleetwood Windows & Doors started in 1961 with the vision of being the best aluminum sliding door company in the Western United States. In fact, the company name was inspired by one of Cadillac’s most elite luxury sedans, the Fleetwood, establishing its reputation as the “Cadillac” of sliding glass doors. With engineering at the forefront of Fleetwood’s success, the company has continued to bring innovative design concepts to the manufacturing floor for more than 50 years. From windows and hinge doors, to traditional sliding and multi-slide glass doors, Fleetwood prides itself on designing and manufacturing the finest windows and doors for modern luxury homes through its national, high-end window dealers. Whether for energy savings, comfort and security, weather protection, budget or style, the residential and commercial applications are endless. Ever-connected with the design community, this family-owned and -operated company is rooted in more humble beginnings. “I grew up sweeping floors, making price books and working in the factory,” general manager Mark McCoy says. “But I’ve always had Fleetwood blood coursing through my veins.” Today, Fleetwood’s dedication to architectural integrity and the meticulous refinement of the “little things” has distinctively positioned the company as a true example of the American dream.

“WE CONTINUE TO BE DRIVEN BY ARCHITECTS AS THEY PUSH THE ENVELOPE FOR MORE EXPANSIVE WINDOW AND DOOR SYSTEMS, WITH MORE GLASS AND LESS FRAME.” FLEETWOOD ... LEADING THE WAY IN GREEN With an unwavering commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing, Fleetwood leads the fenestration market with the greenest multi-slide and sliding pocket doors in the United States. “Our aluminum products are manufactured using recycled aluminum and glass, and are offered in inert coatings and finishes,” McCoy says. “To lessen our environmental impact even more, 100 percent of our aluminum scrap is recyclable.” In addition, Fleetwood is the leader in providing LEED-certified homes with “green-friendly” windows and doors! THE SHAPE OF THINGS

I’ve always been fascinated by the built environment— the influence that a single structure, a street or an entire neighborhood can elicit and how that manifests over time. Take Miami Beach, for example, which happens to be the city where I’m drafting this letter. Arguably, architecture is what largely helped evolve this mangroveand-mosquito-laden barrier island into one of America’s most vibrant urban destinations. What began in the early 1900s with developer Carl Fisher’s Mediterranean Revival architecture segued into a tropical adaptation of Art Deco in the ’30s and was enhanced by a defining postwar extravagant Modernism movement pioneered by Morris Lapidus. Today, Miami’s bold, expanding skyline is a progression of those ideas realized through the lens of architecture’s most esteemed names: Herzog & de Meuron, Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, to name a few. In this issue, we give props to architecture’s innovators and icons: We ID five famous house museums to put on your bucket list; shine a spotlight on of-the-moment residential architects; and examine the connection between Los Angeles’ imaginative structures and the art world. As Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” From the residences that we inhabit to the buildings we work in and the public spaces that surround us, design matters.

memo JANE FERGUSON GIBBONS PUBLISHER

I began my journey at Luxe Interiors + Design as we proudly embarked on our mission as the media sponsor of both the Wattles Mansion Showcase House and the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. I suspect that both showcases chose Luxe for the same reason I did: it is the best platform for introducing designers, architects, builders and tastemakers to each other and to design consumers. The decision to move to Luxe did not come lightly for me. I used my career in audience development for numerous noteworthy California publications as my guide. Luxe Los Angeles’ 60,000 copy distribution is convincing enough—but the brand goes farther than print. The Luxe. Preferred integrated marketing program demystifies both your print and digital efforts via access to educational webinars and seminars about social media, SEO and SEM, plus coaching from our digital marketing team and 100 monthly guaranteed leads to your digital profile. And that’s definitely not all, but it’s an incredible beginning. Enjoy the issue!

CONTRIBUTORS

GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

LAURA MOSS Photographer / New York If you could shoot anywhere in the world, where would it be? Dubai or Shanghai. I think amazing things are being done in these places. On your design wish list: Furniture pieces that can hide all signs of technology and still be beautiful, as well as a great comfortable chair that is cat-proof. Also, I would love to own the perfect ceiling fan. Having grown up in South Florida without air conditioning, ceiling fans were definitely important, but I find that their design is sometimes lacking. Favorite book on your nightstand: I really love Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. Preferred superpower: The ability to freeze time. Best career advice you’ve received: “It’s freelance—you are free to work with whomever you want.” I would not say it’s the best advice ever, but I do love it as it makes me step back and see how lucky I am to be in such a creative field and not stuck in an office forced to follow a specific career track.

JOANNE FURIO

Writer / San Francisco Whose work are you most influenced by design-wise? Charles and Ray Eames. My kids say that I’m stuck in the 1970s, but it’s midcentury elements that I love the most: low-slung houses, groovy furniture, tropical houseplants, mod clothes, heavy eye makeup and sky-high hair—all of it. Ideal work trip: Being sent on a travel assignment to India, Japan or Mongolia. All my Asian friends tell me I need to go to the Far East. Prized possessions: A Donghia deep armchair I got at a sample sale in New York, my grandmother’s marble column table lamps and a sterling-silver bubble ring from the ’60s that had been my aunt’s. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: Joshua Miele, a member of the board at Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco; he’s blind and creates all these new technologies for the visually impaired. If not a writer, I would be… A landscape architect. I love gardens and stone.

LX_COM13_Contributors.indd 98

NATHAN KIRKMAN Photographer / Chicago My biggest creative influences come from… Anyone that shows a passion and continues to work at it. Who are some of the most fascinating people you’ve come across in your life? Author Ray Bradbury, designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and photographer Tim Hursley are all at the top of my list. I would love to one day own... An Hermès Leica camera, La Cornue’s Château 150 in carbon fiber and a photograph by Larry Sultan. What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self? I would most likely tell myself to take a course on business management—and to buy some Apple stock. Dream assignment: Anything that allows me to travel to new places!

CHRISTINE DEORIO Writer / Denver Design obsession: Benjamin Moore’s Homestead Green paint, which I discovered while visiting floral designer Frances Harjeet’s Queen Anne-style home in Denver. It’s elegant and soothing, especially in a room with lots of soft, natural light. If you could interview anyone, who would it be? Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air radio show, who has spoken with many fascinating people during her career. I’m always impressed by how prepared she is for every interview and by her ability to ask probing questions in such a friendly way. I’d like to ask her how she prepares, how she handles difficult or taciturn guests, and how she stays so well-informed about everything. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? The revitalization of Rust Belt cities. I love a good comeback story. The word “Detroit” used to conjure images of once-magnificent buildings in ruins. Now, many of those buildings are hip restaurants, and the city is coming to be known as “the new Brooklyn” for its influx of creatives and burgeoning art and design scenes.

It’s all in the details for leading architects across the country. For Duncan McRoberts, it’s all about paying tribute to classic masters (above); for Cade Hayes, the nuances of the southwestern landscape lead him to design inspired structures with intriguing aesthetic facets (right). Matthew Grzywinski’s and Matt Berman’s works (opposite, from left to right respectively) stand out for their distinct uses of shapes, colors and materials.

RADAR / ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING HUNTER FLEETWOOD

▼ MELISSA BRILLHART

Los Angeles | fleetwoodfernandez.com

Miami | brillhartarchitecture.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: Hunter Fleetwood believes in the power of the built environment on affecting human action and thought. His restaurants, homes and commercial projects, created in conjunction with partner Mariapaz Fernandez-Trillo, demonstrate a forward-thinking—and often whimsical—point of view.

WHY WE LOVE HER: Inspired by everything from childhood woodworking projects to the Shaker structures of New Hampshire, Melissa Brillhart works in tandem with her husband, Jacob, designing homes that place a heavy emphasis on their surrounding contexts. ON THE HORIZON: The couple is currently working on a Bahamian cottage for themselves—a 600-square-foot residence that pulls inspiration from historic Bahamian architecture as well as the Creole Cabinet-Loggia typology—and celebrating the publication of Jacob’s new book, titled Voyage Le Corbusier: Drawing on the Road.

ON THE HORIZON: At the moment, Fleetwood is thrilled about undertaking a residential project for a young family in L.A. that is involved in the arts, which is allowing him to push his creativity to the max. IN HIS WORDS: “While we are supporters of the heightened influx of technology both in the design process and construction methods, on every project we advocate for the inclusion of artisanal quality craftsmanship. When we are successful, you will see form that is handmade and machine-fabricated in juxtaposition. We find it a captivating dichotomy.”

DUNCAN MCROBERTS

Kirkland, WA | mcroberts-associates.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Duncan McRoberts pours over archeological records, measured drawings and books before building a precedent file that invokes the design principles and tectonic characters of the master works he studies. He then crafts work that aims to achieve a perfect balance in composition, beauty and proportion. ON THE HORIZON: McRoberts is designing a boarding school—in classic Oxbridge-style architecture—and a new coastal-traditional neighborhood development on 80 acres in Oregon.

MATTHEW GRZYWINSKI ▲

New York | gp-arch.com

WHY WE LOVE HIM: For his architectural works, Matthew Grzywinski embraces sustainability, function and his aesthetic experience to design spaces that exhibit a sumptuous minimalism. His partnership with fellow architect Amador Pons has birthed a newfound design philosophy based on the principles of beauty, innovation and detail. ON THE HORIZON: Grzywinski’s firm is beginning construction on a residential building in London in addition to a new apartment building in the East Village of Manhattan and a structure on the campus of Cambridge University. IN HIS WORDS: “We try not to chase innovation or novelty for its own sake. Our struggle to marry the rigorous with the exuberant yields interesting results.”

LX_COM13_Radar_ArchitectsToWatch.indd 104

IN HIS WORDS: “The value of artistic import lies in an ability to mediate between ourselves and the schema of our life experiences. Our work is meant to promise harmony of place.”

CADE HAYES

Tucson | dustdb.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Cade Hayes founded the firm Dust in 2007 with co-collaborator Jesús Edmundo Robles Jr. and worked diligently to put together a creative team that is deeply connected to its southwestern desert roots. The firm’s architecture, furniture, hardware and jewelry reflect a boundless respect for natural materials and exhibit a serene display of restraint. ON THE HORIZON: Dust is working on its first public work: a pavilion for the Tucson Audubon Society’s Paton Center for Hummingbirds. IN HIS WORDS: “We are not trying to keep up with current thinking or cool trends; we are simply trying to do really thoughtful, sensitive work. We’d rather be classic than new.”

FLEETWOOD PHOTO: BENNY CHAN. BRILLHART PHOTO: CLAUDIA URIBE. MCROBERTS PHOTO: LAURIE BLACK. HAYES PHOTO: BILL TIMMERMAN. GRZYWINSKI PHOTO: FLOTO + WARNER.

IN HER WORDS: “As the office has grown and matured, we have taken something instinctual and transformed it into something more deliberate and conscious. We are much more cognizant of and responsive to the specific spatial and atmospheric qualities in architecture that move or affect us emotionally.”

3/20/17 2:38 PM

RADAR / ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING

GULLA JONSDOTTIR

Los Angeles | gullajonsdottir.com WHY WE LOVE HER: Icelandic-born Gulla Jonsdottir has a poetic understanding of dynamic forms, leading her to create groundbreaking spatial experiences with her designs. ON THE HORIZON: On the heels of a furniture debut at Salone del Mobile, Jonsdottir is working on projects around the world, including the Macau Roosevelt hotel in China, the Sugar Factory at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, and penthouses in San Francisco. IN HER WORDS: “My first employer was Richard Meier, a great architect with a great sense of geometry, which appealed to my earlier studies of mathematics. Today, I prefer to be more free. There are no straight lines in the human body, so why should there be any in the spaces we occupy?”

JUANCARLOS FERNANDEZ

St. Helena, CA | signumarchitecture.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: With a sincere focus on sustainability, Juancarlos Fernandez and the team behind Signum Architecture create residential and commercial spaces as well as wineries that echo the landscapes in which they reside through the use of natural materials.

SCOTT LINDENAU

Colorado | studiobarchitects.net

ON THE HORIZON: Currently, Fernandez is putting the finishing touches on a home on 40 acres in the hills of St. Helena. The client searched the valley for years to find the perfect property and enlisted Fernandez to create a house unlike any other he’s designed.

WHY WE LOVE HIM: As design principal at Studio B Architecture + Interiors, Scott Lindenau believes in reflective architecture: He creates crafted, modern designs that aim to allow clients to view themselves differently. While Studio B’s ultramodern projects seem grandiose, the firm strives to emulate a covetable, welcoming lifestyle.

IN HIS WORDS: “Our mission is to engage the power of architecture to stir emotion while setting the stage for inspiring living.”

ON THE HORIZON: In conjunction with the team at Studio B, Lindenau is diversifying his work in both location and project type— producing projects in several states, as well as Costa Rica, and working on several residences, a school, a tropical boutique hotel and a recycling waste treatment center.

DAN WHEELER

Chicago | wkarch.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Dan Wheeler leads his firm, Wheeler Kearns Architects, in creating architectural snowflakes, with each design reflecting a remarkably different point of view and energy. Wheeler’s work captures a fresh, modern sensibility, but each project also has a singular focus on the clients’ desires and the overall mission of the site.

MATT BERMAN

New York | workshopapd.com WHY WE LOVE HIM: Matt Berman, along with cofounder of Workshop/APD, Andrew Kotchen, crafts public and private spaces that demonstrate a keen understanding of how people interact with design. ON THE HORIZON: On the boards this year for Workshop/APD: a 45,000-square-foot residential tower in the West Village, a new hotel in Washington Heights and summer homes in Bal Harbour, Florida; South Beach; Nantucket, Massachusetts; and the Bahamas, among others. IN HIS WORDS: “Our designs are deeply rooted in the human experience and we look to architects, fashion, history—or even food—for inspiration.”

ON THE HORIZON: Having recently completed work on The Alice, a community engagement space at Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Wheeler is looking forward to a year full of projects dreamed up for a number of diverse clients, including several museum spaces, theaters, schools and homes. IN HIS WORDS: “We just try to do good, thoughtful work and make it emotionally meaningful to a place, to people from all walks of life that encounter it, and to ourselves.”

Los Angeles architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, who redefined beach house living with the Vault House (shown here and at bottom), are also reinventing ways to show art, as with their work on the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” exhibition at LACMA.

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a place for creatives. In your opinion, what makes the city such a popular destination for artists these days? Artists are drawn by the presence of an arts scene: lots of other artists, art schools and the explosion of new galleries. This scene exists

PRODUCED BY MARY ORE

here in part because L.A. is still affordable relative to other art capitals. In some neighborhoods, artists are still able to find houses with garages and large yards for making large works, and in downtown L.A. and some other industrial areas, they can find the kinds of studios that have long

attracted artists: unplanned, sometimes illegal, but spacious and affordable live-work spaces in old warehouses and light industrial buildings. Which neighborhoods are you finding artists migrating to for their living spaces and studios? Currently, they’re migrating to areas in L.A. that are still affordable and have dwelling spaces with room to make art, including parts of downtown L.A. as well as Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Frogtown, Elysian Park and Inglewood. Often, though, these migrations can cause pushback from the existing communities in several of these areas over fears of gentrification. Has this explosion of artistic talent affected the cultural and architectural dynamic of the city? Yes, definitely. We’re seeing a number of architects who are collaborating closely with artists. For example, Jimenez Lai, of Bureau Spectacular, recently collaborated with New York artist Grayson Cox on “Speechbuster / 99 Chairs,” an exhibit commissioned by Storefront for Art and Architecture with a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Are there any local architects that we should be keeping an eye on? Lorcan O’Herlihy is designing some of the most interesting multifamily dwellings in West Hollywood and Los Angeles, like his most recent, SL11024, in Westwood Village. Tom Wiscombe, too, an architect and teacher at SCI-Arc, is bringing an experimental aesthetic to his projects, including the upcoming, private Main Museum

in downtown L.A. Then, there are Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, from Johnston Marklee, who are designing extremely refined private homes and art spaces, including the Menil Drawing Institute that will open at The Menil Collection in Houston in October. Finally, LA-Más is a firm that aims to improve residential and public spaces in low-income areas but maintains a strong Pop sensibility while doing so. Favorite public buildings in Los Angeles? Studio Jantzen and Behnisch Architekten’s Parking Structure #6 in Santa Monica and Lehrer Architects’ Central Park Recreation Pool in South L.A. top my list. The colorful parking structure reflects city planners’ goal of beautifying an otherwise banal or even ugly building type. Not only is it intended to accommodate large numbers of bikes and electric cars as well as ordinary cars, it has the added feature of a dramatic red staircase on the façade, aimed at encouraging drivers to walk up and down stairs. For his part, Michael Lehrer drew on California artists Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and their “beautiful coloration,” he says, as well as David Hockney’s “ebullient turquoise water,” when he and his team designed the pool to replace one that had been closed to locals for 12 years. The design was built on a budget but proves that imagination can go a long way in creating an attractive public venue in a community that had long needed one. Why have you chosen radio as your preferred method of communicating with the architecture community? What does this medium add to such a traditionally visual conversation? I was originally drawn to radio because I like asking questions and hearing smart people talk—specifically as it relates to communicating architecture, which is, of course, a visual medium. Paradoxically, radio frees one from images and gives the interviewer time to explore, without visual distraction, the ideas behind and the human impact of buildings.

And by the same token, has the architectural dynamic of the city had any effect on the community of new artists who are now calling it home? I’m seeing some intriguing things happening in museum and gallery design at the moment. For example, the installation that architecture firm Johnston Marklee created for the “Moholy-Nagy: Future Present” show at LACMA breaks from the tendency to shroud modern and contemporary art in white-painted rooms. The exhibit features a subtly dramatic layout, with a sequence of galleries that move through the artist’s career, denoted by slate gray walls at the start and progressing through time to light gray. Into the walls of these galleries, they’ve cut doorways that line up in a slashing diagonal, making for a moment of surreal visual drama in an otherwise restrained design.

PARKING STRUCTURE

too, is noteworthy and exemplifies California minimalism, while Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, who has worked with many artists, has designed Christie’s brand-new multipurpose flagship space in Beverly Hills. Finally, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of the union between Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena, of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, and artist Sharon Lockhart, who was selected to represent Poland at this year’s Venice Biennale.

WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE IF YOU COULD VISIT YOUR FAVORITE ARCHITECTS AT HOME? THESE FAMOUS DOMICILES-TURNED-MUSEUMS PROVIDE THE ANSWER TO NEARLY EVERY DESIGN LOVER’S MOST BURNING QUESTION. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

FALLINGWATER Mill Run, Pennsylvania Probably the best-known residence on our list, Fallingwater is a testament to everything architecture enthusiasts have come to love about Frank Lloyd Wright: attention-grabbing design that works with and not against its environment. Designed for department-store magnates, the Kaufmann family, Fallingwater is currently the only Wright-designed house that is open to the public with all of its original furniture and artwork on display precisely as they appeared upon the residence’s completion in 1939. REASON TO VISIT: Thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, in collaboration with local arts and architecture organizations, the house provides a variety of immersive, educational experiences through a series of lectures and residencies—so it’s perfect for Wright fans who want a more in-depth look at the architect’s creative process.

EAMES HOUSE Pacific Palisades, California The final home of legendary husbandand-wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames, this midcentury jewel box was a veritable creative playground for the couple thanks to its two-box modular structure: one of which contained their living quarters and the other which functioned as a working studio. Constructed in 1949, the building boasts a limited material palette of glass and steel with warm wooden accents throughout the interiors and pops of green from the verdant environs. REASON TO VISIT: If you’ve ever had the inclination to celebrate the bygone wedding of an envy-inducing couple you’ve never met, each year the Eames Foundation—which is responsible for the supervision of and conservancy efforts for the Pacific Palisades home—hosts a Members Appreciation Day during the week of June 20th, Charles and Ray’s anniversary, complete with guided tours and juried design competitions.

RADAR / ITINERARY FARNSWORTH HOUSE

Plano, Illinois

One of only three residential homes in the United States designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Farnsworth House is considered to be one of the purest examples of the pioneering architect’s bare-bones modern style. Comprised of one sole room, the weekend retreat was originally designed for prominent Chicago nephrologist Dr. Edith Farnsworth with floor-to-ceiling windows that facilitate an easy communion with nature. REASON TO VISIT: You’ll want to make it out to this handsome piece of architectural history before it gets the full Hollywood treatment: Actors Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal have recently signed on to appear in a feature film that will fictionalize the highly-speculated-upon relationship between Farnsworth and Mies van der Rohe that developed during the home’s construction.

GROPIUS HOUSE Lincoln, Massachusetts The name of German architect Walter Gropius is nearly synonymous with the movement he is widely regarded to have founded: Bauhaus. And the home he built for himself and his family in Massachusetts may well have been the structure that helped cement the style as part of architecture’s canon. Built in 1938, the house blends traditional New England architectural elements like wood and brick with modernist materials like glass, plaster and chrome and today feels like a perfectly preserved time capsule. REASON TO VISIT: The Gropius House is a sight to behold any time, but when admired at night thanks to monthly events hosted by Historic New England, the organization responsible for the conservation of the property, the home is transformed by the architect’s own innovative lighting scheme.

LX_COM13_Radar_HouseMuseums .indd 114

While The Glass House is only one of 14 structures on late architect Philip Johnson’s massive 49-acre property in Connecticut, it’s easy to see why it’s also the most beloved: its wallless construction makes it feel more like a dream of a house than a house itself. For all its avant-garde flourishes, though, its interior provides a fairly traditional living space inhabited by Johnson himself when he was in residence there from 1949 to 2005. REASON TO VISIT: Although the house is only open to the public May through November, it makes up for lost time with a near-dizzying schedule of events and art exhibits. Last year’s landscape installation by the artist Yayoi Kusama, for example, transformed the property’s newly restored pond into a fluid art gallery thanks to the addition of 1,300 floating steel sculptures.

CHECK IN HOTEL INDIGO

The Hotel Indigo in L.A.’s South Park neighborhood is officially open for business, bringing 350 guest rooms to one of the most booming parts of the city. The 18-story tower is part of Metropolis, the $1 billion mixed-use project by Greenland USA. Hirsch Bedner Associates designed the interiors based on four themes inspired by L.A.’s history: the Fiesta de las Flores parade—a precursor to the Rose Parade; the film industry; famous starlets and directors; and the secret underground tunnels and speakeasies of the 1920s. These ideas are woven through the spaces in subtle ways, such as in the floral mural in the lobby, or with dramatic gestures, like the Prohibitionera-style Metropole Bar + Kitchen, while guest rooms tell the tales of early stars. ihg.com

THE INSIDER DAVID ALHADEFF

When David Alhadeff decided to expand his New York City design shop, The Future Perfect, to L.A., he took an unconventional approach. Rather than looking at retail spaces, Alhadeff set his sights on something more familial. Almost instantly he found a 1957 house by Korean-American architect David Hyun in the Hollywood Hills that he could transform into the ultimate lifestyle gallery. Visitors to the by-appointment venue can even take a dip in the pool. “Casa Perfect has opened its doors for collaboration in art, fashion and food—programming the space is a lot of fun,” Alhadeff says. Here, the design visionary dishes on what’s exciting him in L.A. thefutureperfect.com Design must-sees: Visit the Schindler House, which is a stone’s throw from Casa Perfect, the Eames House, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Millard House and Watts Towers. For galleries, visit David Kordansky Gallery and Hauser Wirth & Schimmel. When in town... Take a hike in Mandeville Canyon, and have lunch at Manuela, and browse the wares at The Good Liver. Plus, I like Rose Avenue in Venice, and Gjusta is my go-to sunny spot. Ones to watch: Eric Roinestad, Jonathan Cross, Adam Silverman, David Wiseman and Lisa Eisner are all incredibly talented. Some have relatively developed identities but all are fairly young in their practice and extremely devoted. What’s next for the design scene? Things feel a bit chaotic at the moment but there will always be a place for work that’s made well. During my 15 years in this field, I’ve seen an increased appreciation for contemporary work at a mass and high-end level that will continue to persist. People are interested in what’s new and fresh. Design that’s in dialogue with classic works—that’s where the excitement is.

RIVERSIDE ART MUSEUM “As a community museum, our institution was formed to address the need for a cultural center in the Inland Empire. Along with exhibitions, we have a program with the Riverside Unified School District to bring art lessons to elementary schools, and we’ve been working with Riverside’s Eastside community and the Latino Network. Our engagement work is extremely rewarding. Plus, it’s an absolute pleasure to work in a Julia Morgan building. It’s a testament to the community that this 1929 structure, a former YWCA, is in such good shape. To celebrate our 50th anniversary here this year, we’ll debut a tribute wall for our pioneering architect who so famously built Hearst Castle.” –DREW OBERJUERGE, RIVERSIDEARTMUSEUM.ORG

DEKOR

When did you open? We welcomed our first customers to our store in Echo Park in 2011, but we recently moved into our new shop in Atwater Village. What’s the concept behind Dekor? I’ve always felt that if you’re happy in your home, you take that feeling with you when you go out in the world, so I want to have something for everyone while keeping a wide price point. How does the store reflect your own style? I grew up in Sweden and am very influenced by Scandinavian design. Growing up where it’s very dark half the year makes you realize that how you light a room is key! I’m also very eclectic, and I like to mix midcentury pieces with antiques. Plus, I go on more shopping trips now, so we have more items from Europe and Morocco. Share what’s new for spring. We just got a container from Eastern Europe filled with amazing farm tables and benches for alfresco dining. And I’m designing a metal daybed that’s lovely for inside or outside. Tell us about your Ojai outpost. I opened Dekor & Co. in Ojai about three years ago. It’s a huge space—a former car repair shop. It has the same feeling as my L.A. space but we have more lifestyle items, like skin care, clothing and even a tea bar. dekorla.com

DATE BOOK KARA SMITH

With offices in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, interior designer Kara Smith of SFA Design has an eye for crafting both city-style dwellings and easy-going vacation homes. But she often finds herself anticipating the latter just so she can enjoy her own seaside escape. “The days in Santa Barbara are packed because I’m only there one day a week but the atmosphere is much more relaxed. I spend less time in my car and more time living in the moment,” the designer says. Beyond her residential work, Smith is renovating Oliver’s restaurant in Santa Barbara whilst working on the Fairmont villas in Del Mar and the Miraval villas in Tucson. Soon, the designer will also reveal a two-year-long penthouse condo project at the W Hollywood. Here, she gives us an inspired coastal day in Santa Barbara. sfadesign.com

9 a.m. Mornings are spent reviewing projects, but if I have time, I love to visit local artisans and shops, especially House of Honey for unique furniture and textiles, Mate Gallery for vintage finds and Miri Mara Ceramics for handmade vases, bowls and cups. 12 p.m. For lunch, I’ll grab chicken tacos at Taqueria Cuernavaca just around the corner from our studio. If it’s a lunch meeting, I love to take clients to Scarlett Begonia. It’s a casual California eatery with a cute patio and a menu that changes weekly.

2 p.m. Santa Barbara is beautiful because of its proximity to the ocean, so I try to take in the surroundings as much as I can. Sometimes I’ll take a hike to Inspiration Point or bring my daughter to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center on Stearns Wharf. 5 p.m. If I finish my work in time, I love to watch the sunset at the Belmond El Encanto resort with a glass of pinot noir. 7 p.m. I’ll close out the day with dinner at Plow & Angel at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito. The restaurant is located in an old stone building— it’s intimate and has a fireplace to chase away the chill of an evening on the coast.

DATE BOOK PHOTOS: COURTESY KARA SMITH.

7 a.m. If you like to start the day early like I do, try a boot camp class with Jenny Schatzle followed by a coffee or breakfast at The French Press coffee shop on State Street. I especially love the almond-milk latte.

SYNCHRONICITY BY HUBBARDTON FORGE In the world of design, lighting often plays a supporting role. In the hands of luxury lighting manufacturer Hubbardton Forge, it steals the show. The company’s new line, Synchronicity, puts the spotlight on their sculptural, hand-forged metal with the added elegance of Swarovski crystals. “We were looking for something with a bolder voice,” design director David Kitts says. “To design a fixture with real star power, a la Audrey Hepburn.” With carefully crafted precision and purposeful placement, Hubbardton Forge’s in-house designers cradle the crystals within each fixture, like a fine jewel. In some cases, the crystals take center stage, in others, they’re treated as an accent. “We’re striving for a 50-50 role with crystal and forged elements in a very organic way,” Kitts continues. With myriad residential and commercial applications, Synchronicity captures the heritage of Hubbardton Forge with lighting that plays the lead role in any design.

SYNCHRONICITY + SWAROVSKI A SERENDIPITOUS AFFAIR How did the world’s foremost crystal maker join forces with foremost luxury lighting designer Hubbardton Forge? It was serendipity for Synchronicity. Swarovski approached Hubbardton Forge toward the end of 2015 as they were developing a new way to cut crystal. At the same time, Hubbardton Forge was looking to craft the next statement piece for the home. “Swarovski was the ideal partnership,” Kitts tells. TOP. ZEPHYR Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Zephyr looks back at the defining moments in the company’s history and its game-changing kitchen hoods. In 1997, it was the first manufacturer to bring power ventilation to the modern kitchen, with three undercabinet hoods. By 2001, Zephyr became known for chimney-style, stainless-steel hoods, which remain prominent. Aligned with a design-centric approach, the company partnered with the world’s most influential designers, including Fu-Tung Cheng and Robert Brunner, who balance aesthetics and technology with a masterful eye. Today, Zephyr sets industry standards in technology, through its DCBL Suppression System®, which renders the hood virtually silent and supremely energy-efficient, and its Bloom™ HD and BriteStrip™ LED products. “We continue to elevate the kitchen through design, discovery and care,” president Luke Siow says. In the hands of Zephyr, the onceoverlooked hood has become a major player in the appliance category, inspiring a new generation of kitchen design.

TURNING HEADS AGAIN ... BLACK STAINLESS STEEL Zephyr adds to its list of firsts with the launch of Black Stainless Steel Hoods, made with titanium coating, to the luxury appliance market. Aside from its striking aesthetic value, the new black stainless steel promises uniformity, durability and strength with military-grade protection, and anti-smudge and fingerprint-resistant properties. In addition, each hood can be outfitted with the company’s technological innovations, including BriteStrip™ LED lighting and ICON Touch® controls. TOP. WEATHEREND ESTATE FURNITURE No other company embodies quality and durability like Weatherend, the Maine outdoor furniture builder steeped in century-old traditions. Think back to 1905, when landscape architect Hans Heistad worked the coastal properties of several summer estates in Maine. One estate, named Weatherend, was his pride and joy. It is here that he crafted landscapes complemented with outdoor pieces that became the inspiration for Weatherend’s furniture designs. The influence of Heistad, along with boatbuilding skills taught by his father, enabled owner Gil Harper to introduce yacht construction integrity to outdoor furniture. These skills, combined with marine materials, have resulted in Weatherend’s signature curves and finishes that add grace and endurance to any residential or commercial space. “Our yacht-building expertise allows us to create innovative designs that can be customized to any outdoor setting,” Harper says.

WEATHEREND’S COLLECTIONS ESTATE: With 80 to 100 pieces, Weatherend’s original Estate collection is inspired by designs Heistad created while working on the Weatherend and Pulitzer estates from 1905 to 1935. YACHTING: Using curves for comfort, the Yachting collection has a distinctive design with each piece inspired by life on the water. ANGELA ADAMS: When Harper saw well-known textile and furniture designer Angela Adams’ work, he recognized an opportunity to introduce it to the outdoor market. EXPRESSIONS: The unique Expressions collection is a completely custom line that gives clients the opportunity to specify design, shape, color and finish for any “expression” they want. WINDSOR: The company’s newest casual and dining chairs pay homage to the first outdoor furniture brought to the colonies, but with a contemporary spin. *All Weatherend furniture is available at JANUS et Cie showrooms across the country.

LACANTINA DOORS Recognized for the most aesthetically striking and environmentally sound door and window systems in the world, LaCantina Doors bold the rest of this sentence Folding, sliding or swinging, their innovative systems open up spaces and engage the outside, transforming how homeowners interact with their living space. “ ‘LaCantina Life’ is all about the benefits of living in large open spaces surrounded by natural light and open air,” vice president and general manager Lee Maughan says. Furthering this philosophy, LaCantina’s minimal, clean designs and consistent-width stile and rail profiles create balance and symmetry. Dedicated to innovation, LaCantina utilizes the same narrow signature door panel across its product line for a complete and perfectly matching door package. This “perfect match” allows for the same daylight opening and consistent sight lines across all of LaCantina’s systems.

BREAKTHROUGH DOOR + WINDOW DESIGN Pivot: Launching summer 2017, LaCantina’s new Pivot system makes a statement for any large entry or patio door opening, featuring large panels with transom and sidelite options in a full range of materials. Folding: The most versatile, Contemporary Clad features a low-maintenance aluminum exterior with multiple profile options and the warmth of a wood interior. Sliding: LaCantina’s new class of multi-slide doors combines the optimal aesthetics and performance of a high-end lift-slide with the functionality and value of a multi-slide. Swing: The new swing doors create more space than typical single or French doors, and are made using architectural-grade stainless-steel hinges and robust door panels. Screen: LaCantina’s screening systems were the first designed specifically for large openings. Whether for insect protection, transparency, privacy or energy efficiency, its pleated and non-pleated options provide the solution. TOP. Photograph Courtesy of BUILD LLC

Debbie Cahill Turner Design Seattle, WA “With so many of my favorite vendors exhibiting at the show, I always walk away with incredible finds for my clients. Most recently, I found vintage vinyl floor cloths in great color combinations, which I love to use in casual dining spaces, at Spicher and Company. Blush and pink tones, often paired with gold metals and ginkgo motifs in lighting, accessories and furniture, were everywhere. Organic forms inspired by nature were quite popular too. My favorite was Currey & Company’s Forest chandelier with gilded branches dripping in quartz crystal. Since I’m based on the West Coast, I find Las Vegas Market to be one of the most comprehensive and inspiring shows to attend. Download the market app to navigate the show with ease, and make it a point to stop by showrooms with which you’re unfamiliar. You never know what cool, new lines you’ll find.”

Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design Los Angeles, CA “We’ve always found incredible, undiscovered furniture and lighting lines, as well as spectacular tabletop accessory companies, at Las Vegas Market. In addition to shopping for furnishings, we love finding unique styling details, such as stunning drapery hardware, exquisite bed linens, beautiful stemware and more. We’ve also witnessed many trends evolve at the show, from the wave of linen fabric upholstery and French napkin trends, to bold ethnic rug collections and hospitality quality furnishings. We’re constantly surprised by our new finds each season. Don’t miss a thing, map out the World Market Center and allow for extra time to explore. You’re guaranteed to always find something. Truly, Las Vegas Market is a smart design resource with so much to offer for a whole design project.”

ADG San Francisco, CA “The sheer volume of resources available to designers at Las Vegas Market is mind-boggling. Each season there are more and more innovations and new products that we have never seen before, which is always exciting. Since it’s hosted in Las Vegas, there’s a level of excitement and energy like no other show. My most recent favorite product finds are the stylish and edgy CASEGOODS collection at SHO MODERN and the breadth of luxury home accessories at Noir. I’m always inspired by elegant materials and meticulous craftsmanship, and love seeing the trend of custom requests and collaborations between designers and vendors continue—no matter what the product is. To maximize your time at the show, make sure you have a list of “not to be missed” vendors and remember to bring a ton of business cards. As much as the show is about sourcing, it’s also about networking.”

Las Vegas Market is open to the trade only, July 30 – August 3, 2017. Don’t miss the Las Vegas Market and Luxe Interiors + Design’s “Ahead of the Curve” trend presentation on August 1st! Register online at lasvegasmarket.com

ANDREA COCHRAN

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT ACOCHRAN.COM

At first sight: The Radiant lamps are elegant and timeless, perfectly reflecting Janice Feldman’s personal vision. I love how the carved surfaces contrast with the simplicity of the orbs, resulting in this beautifully crafted texture juxtaposed with minimal design. On the job: My work has always been grounded in modernism and minimalist art; I am interested in the perception of nature and natural phenomena in relation to more structured forms. In the daylight… These lamps look like elegant stone sculptures, solid and weighty. At night, they are transformed into lanterns, with an airiness that belies the materiality of the stone—I’m reminded of the paper lanterns you see in the Japanese tōrō nagashi ceremony. At home: The subtle genius of these lamps is their versatility. They could stand on a table beautifully but could also effectively illuminate the small corners of a garden.

FIRST MATES THE PIECES: Radiant Double Knitting Ball and Radiant Knitting Ball THE DESIGNER: Janus et Cie FIND IT: janusetcie.com THE INSPIRATION: Taking their cue from the texture of yarn, the Radiant lamps are actually constructed of natural, undyed sandstone and beam from within, capable of casting an enchanting glow without being defined by the space in which they reside. Their versatility encourages a well-lived—and stylish—life among the indoors and outdoors alike, a Janus et Cie trademark.

KNOTS LANDING THE PIECES: Criss Cross Outdoor Pillows in Charcoal (far left) and True Blue, and Mr. Rowe Outdoor Pillow in Green/Blue THE DESIGNER: Alex Mason FIND IT: ferrickmason.com THE INSPIRATION: Perennially cool and distinctly fresh are just a few thoughts that come to mind when dreaming about a Ferrick Mason textile, and the same is certainly true with the hip and artful brand’s inaugural outdoor collection. Thoughtfully picked from their existing indoor line, Criss Cross—a simple doodle reinvented into a perfect coordinate—and Mr. Rowe—a masculine design with a twist that was inspired by a dear friend—are the festive outdoor accents you didn’t know you needed.

LX_COM13_Market_Spotlight.indd 170

NAOMI SANDERS LANDSCAPE DESIGNER NAOMISANDERS.COM

At first sight: Alex Mason’s designs are as thoughtful and elegant as they are fresh and playful. Compared to previous collections, however, these patterns are a little more graphic and handsome, inspired by strong geometry over a more whimsical, natural form. As a landscape designer… These accent pillows appeal to me not only for their ability to complement a wide variety of garden styles—traditional, Zen or modern—but they’d also pair well with other patterns, textures and colors. Though a bit more contemporary and universal in style… Both of these patterns bring the art of Japanese shibori to mind, a style and mood that I’m constantly mindful about integrating into outdoor spaces. I’m wholly attracted to… Gardens that combine structured, architectural form with native, seasonal and wild plantings: I’m moved by landscapes that elevate one’s understanding of the natural process.

3/21/17 11:47 AM

SECOND WIND THE PIECE: Maia Relax Armchair THE DESIGNER: Patricia Urquiola FIND IT: kettal.com THE INSPIRATION: Known for its innovative yet stylish handcrafted designs, Barcelona-based Kettal partners only with the best—Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola included. Urquiola’s Relax armchair, part of her Maia collection for the international brand, is infused with modernity and lightness and breaks new ground on archtypical outdoor furnishings through the use of geometric patterns, high-tech braided fibers and a wide aluminum frame. The result is just as stellar as the collaboration itself: an exploration and reimagining of outdoor furniture to a distinctly chicer level.

MATT WITTMAN & JODY ESTES

ARCHITECT AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNER WITTMAN-ESTES.COM

At first sight… Our initial impression of the Maia Relax armchair is one of weightlessness. The chair’s lightness lends a breezy informality that works to balance its sculptural and prismatic form. With a minimal and functional spirit… The chair nevertheless appears comfortable—and almost playful. Like Kettal… We err toward clean, crisp designs that complement modern architecture, so we appreciate how Patricia Urquiola and the brand are mindful of tradition—in both form and material—but smart in cleverly creating fresh pieces that adhere to today’s needs and experiences. On the job: We also enjoy designing spaces that are functional and not overly complicated; we anticipate the movement of the people in it and, rather than attempting to control it, we work with that natural movement and flow. At home: We see this piece living at a tropical resort or in a modern patio setting—not overly structured but intentional, with an abundance of comfort and coolness.

MARKET / SPOTLIGHT

TIGHT ROPE THE PIECE: Custom Plain Weave Shore Rug THE DESIGNER: Louie Rigano and Gil Muller FIND IT: shorerugs.com THE INSPIRATION: London design duo Louie Rigano and Gil Muller consider it their mission to create inspired designs that are as beautiful as they are functional. Their brainchild, Shore Rugs, breaks free from the traditional rug vernacular by using custom-engineered silicone cords to fashion products with a high domestic appeal, indoors and out. Combine that allure with their penchant for brilliant color palettes, like this custom ombre design, and prepare to experience, visually and tangibly, a rug like no other.

RYAN KETTELKAMP LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT KETTELKAMP2.COM

At first sight: I was drawn to the chunky, bold weave of this custom rug. It introduces a profoundly noticeable texture into the piece; you immediately sense substance and durability but the interplay of color introduces an artful playfulness. On the job: I particularly like the idea of contrasts in garden designs—wild and exuberant plantings within a formal layout and areas of shade contrasted with open bright sunny spots in a garden—and routinely stress the importance of good lines, ones that pull you into an outdoor environment and beg you to come and explore. It’s important that a well-conceived garden speak to you in this way. Old and new: Shore Rugs’ use of technologically advanced materials in a way that harks back to the long tradition of handwork is admirable. The actual material also communicates an ease of maintenance, which is key for the outdoors. Landscape architecture… Weaves all my interests—science, art, horticulture, craft, design, technology, history and the outdoors—into a cohesive whole, coincidentally not unlike one of these rugs.

JANICE PARKER

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT JANICEPARKER.COM

At first sight: It’s immediately clear how well-crafted these tables are, and beyond that, they read as extremely chic. Dedon’s lines are always visionary and unique, and the same is true of Lorenza Bozzoli’s work. It’s contemporary and very personal; she doesn’t let functionality sacrifice style. Speaking of functionality… This design is just the right height and you can play with configurations. I also love that the tops are natural trays and have drainage slots—versatile and perfect for all things poolside. Mother Nature and the magic of the outdoors… Drew me to landscape design. The natural world has constant change and life cycles. This made sense to me as a child. Of course, once I was deeply engaged, I wanted to play with all the plants and forms and remake reality. Why not a mountain or a lake where there was none? Visually and viscerally… The tables have a lovely lightness to them, and the fact they have three legs reminds me of Noguchi. The art of craft and the love for craft are what this design is all about.

LX_COM13_Market_Spotlight.indd 173

SEA LEVEL THE PIECE: Brixx Side Table Triangular THE DESIGNER: Lorenza Bozzoli FIND IT: dedon.us THE INSPIRATION: As with all things Dedon and all things Lorenza Bozzoli, the Brixx side table, with its sleek powdercoated aluminum top and natural teak legs, elevates the everyday. The Milanese fashion and furniture expert’s marriage with Dedon, and their fine Italian craftsmanship, is nothing short of a refined and understated match made in heaven—resulting in the Brixx table and its collection’s stunning counterparts.

DROP ANCHOR THE PIECE: Windsor Casual Chair THE DESIGNER: Weatherend Estate Furniture FIND IT: weatherend.com THE INSPIRATION: Over a century ago, landscape architect Hans Heistad began designing outdoor landscapes with complementing furniture for seaside properties along the coast of Maine. Among these dreamy coastal estates was Weatherend, and over a hundred years later, Weatherend Estate Furniture continues to produce stately and sophisticated pieces. Using techniques typically found in yacht building, the heritage brand reimagined the Windsor—a contemporary interpretation of the first outdoor chair introduced to America—which celebrates the seating staple’s rich history and ageless design.

At first sight: I admire the subtle maritime aesthetic that Weatherend often applies to their works. There is something that feels particularly “right” about this design and its exceptional craftsmanship. As a landscape architect… I am especially drawn to the style and flexibility of a design. If you’re going to bring something into your home, indoors or out, these two qualities are paramount. On the job: I greatly enjoy collaborating with designers and architects to create beautiful and environmentally appropriate spaces, ones that harmoniously marry the site and the client, and I feel like this chair would be an easy fit for so many atmospheres. At home: The joinery and overall mood of this piece make the Windsor Casual chair the perfect solution for any space craving an elegant yet rugged piece of furniture. To me, it would seem most at home on a deck overlooking the ocean or atop a posh sailboat or yacht.

OPEN HOUSE

WHEN MOTHER NATURE IS THE GUEST OF HONOR IN YOUR HOME’S HARDEST-WORKING SPACES, BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INDOORS AND OUT MELT AWAY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

That sunshine and fresh air are a salve for many of life’s ailments is hardly a secret. After all, spending time outdoors is linked to both increased vitamin D production and feelings of happiness. It’s no wonder, then, that designers are bringing nature into the home’s busiest rooms. The latest retractable glass walls and service-style windows blur the line between interior and exterior, providing an often-needed calming connection to the outside world. Whether you’re blessed with a temperate climate yearround, as in Sydney, where this kitchen is located, or you’re forced to make the most of a limited run of good weather, we hope you’ll find inspiration in the following pages. 182 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Sydney’s Smart Design Studio created this open-air kitchen as part of a modern addition to a Federal-style house. Walls of windows and retractable glass doors bring in an abundance of light, which a mirrored backsplash further reflects. As a result, the narrow space feels much larger than it is.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

SMART DESIGN STUDIO Blame it on the mild weather Down Under, but one thing’s for certain when it comes to Australian design: No one does indoor-outdoor spaces quite like the Aussies. Here, interior designer Victoria Judge of Sydney’s Smart Design Studio walks us through this airy minimalist kitchen. smartdesignstudio.com Share your vision. Our climate is conducive to an outdoor lifestyle, and this house facilitates exactly that. The streamlined design features integrated appliances where possible, and the dining table and island are combined to maximize open space. Black-stained timber joinery extends beyond the kitchen to an outdoor eating area.

How much was light a factor in designing this kitchen? The house is on a very narrow plot and surrounded by tall buildings to the south, which forms a kind of cavern, so large windows were important for bringing light into the room. By providing a double-height space in the rear we were able to flood the room in bright light all day long.

PHOTO: SHARRIN REES.

What are some tricks for a seamless indoor-outdoor space? Folding doors are great, allowing rooms to fully open to the outdoors. Opting for a continuous floor finish, such as the travertine used here, between indoors and out helps. By reducing the amount of finishes, you can eliminate visual clutter and the division of spaces.

Elegant fine linens and casual alfresco dining generally don’t mix. Enter oilcloth linen: The durable, waterproof material stands up to spills and splashes and makes a pretty placemat to boot, as in the Parentesi (shown here in Sage) from La Gallina Matta. Its unique shape and delicate embroidery prove that practicality and style can go hand in hand. lagallinamatta.it

To transform a Tuscan-style villa into a modern country home, architect Ken Linsteadt relied on an earthy, natural palette and opened up every room to the surrounding Sonoma, California, landscape. Moving the kitchen to the opposite end of the house so it could face the pool terrace created more of a connection to the outside. “The oversize steel-and-glass windows tilt up, providing an expansive view and easy access to the pool, as well as shade over the bar on a sunny day,” he says. kenlinsteadt.com

COOL & CONNECTED For this modern kitchen, designer Julia Treuel opted for a crisp, monochromatic look that wouldn’t compete with the lush greenery in the backyard. She then installed bifold windows and a servery for a seamless connection to the garden. “Not only is it lovely to have fresh air flowing through this zone, but the house feels larger for it,” says Treuel. abbeycollective.com.au

While the bateau-style soaking tub and lively patterned floor command attention in this striking bath in Cape Town, South Africa, the real draw is the scene just outside the French doors. That’s why designer Kim Stephen kept the palette simple.

One look at this lovely bath designed by interiors talent Kim Stephen, and it’s easy to imagine your daily struggle to get out of bed and start your pre-work routine all but disappearing. Opening onto a private hedged garden with mountain views, it’s the perfect spot for luxuriating in the tub and taking in the gorgeous landscape. “With so much greenery just outside the door, I decided to stick to a palette of black and white to keep it serene,” says Stephen. “Bringing some plant life into the space was also important to underscore the connection to nature, and the lushness of a banana palm seemed the perfect tropical touch,” she says. kimstephen.com

SECOND NATURE

Taking full advantage of the dry Coronado landscape, designer Casey Browar created an open-air great room as an ode to the hacienda courtyard lifestyle—with all the accompanying leisurely trappings. 1 / Party Line: Craft an engaging atmosphere for fun and frolic with distinctive conversation spots made for mingling. Here, diverse seating options help define different spaces, from the sleek barstools in the bar area to the inviting wicker lounge chairs and sofas around the fireplace. 2 / Weather Worn: Showcase the alchemy of materials exposed to the elements with raw, unpolished surfaces, like the reclaimed barnwood lining the walls of the cocktail station or the rustic patina of the chandelier from RH. 3 / Garden State: Plantings feel just as sculptural when made a part of the home’s architecture. Feathery vines climbing up the columns add refreshing greenery as well as interesting texture. 4 / Fire Born: A streamlined fireplace can make nights by the fire feel refined and cozy. This mantel made of Jerusalem limestone brings a clean contrast to the room’s highly textured finishes.

Copious amounts of vintage glam and desert sunshine permeate this Palm Springs home updated by architect James Schmidt, who seamlessly melded the interiors with the breathtaking expanse of the surrounding mountains. 1 / No Boundaries: Sweeping, floor-to-ceiling glass doors are a must in creating that fluid connection with the desert. Here, an entire wall slides open for effortless flow between indoors and out. 2 / Desert Days: Consider taking note from nature when composing your interior’s color palette. In this seating area, for instance, the earthy taupe of the Bacharach swivel chairs by Jonathan Adler, paired with the vivid orange of the vintage Moroccan rug, mirror the iconic desert hues of Palm Springs. 3 / Home Turf: Capture the unique outdoor milieu of your environs with some iconic pieces. Nothing exudes retro Palm Springs patio culture more than this 1960s Rohé Noordwolde hanging chair with its midcentury silhouette and effortless spirit. 4 / High Climbs: A minimalist banister proves essential when featuring such picturesque views. The slender railings leave a clear sight line to the surrounding’s signature palm trees while remaining harmonious with the home’s style.

The hectic city hum of Los Angeles seems to melt away in this Kara Smith-designed sun room, blissfully tucked away in the Hollywood Hills to take full advantage of Southern California mornings. 1 / Pearly Whites: Nothing reflects sunshine better than a crisp, alabaster color scheme, nicely defined here with the pristine walls and slipcovers over the seating, and punctuated simply with pops of blue to complement the original vintage tiles on the floor. 2 / Shadow Play: Cast a striking silhouette against the sky with dramatic fenestration. The slender and symmetrical framing surrounding the tall doors injects some architectural girth to the towering glass while still conveying a sense of lightness. 3 / Painted Veil: Soften part of your wall-to-wall windows with some barely there draperies, like these ethereal curtains made with fabric by Chella, which reveals a different facet of the daylight. 4 / Light Fantastic: Skip traditional alfresco lighting for something more distinctive. A glittery crystal chandelier conveys gentility while drawing the eyes upward to the high ceiling.

A NIGHT FOR PRESERVATION

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TARA BLASKA PHOTOGRAPHY

During Modernism Week in Palm Springs, California, Luxe Interiors + Design celebrated A Night for Preservation with Save Iconic Architecture (SIA Projects). Founded by Los Angeles-based design duo Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield of Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design, SIA Projects champions the fight to preserve significant architecture as art and aims to protect, preserve, educate and celebrate architectural integrity and cultural heritage. On February 19th, over 150 design and style influencers descended upon the architecturally significant Hotel Lautner, designed by midcentury pioneer John Lautner, to celebrate SIA’s mission to preserve iconic architecture and design. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres by Liquid Catering and creative cocktails by buzzbox. Coyote and iBBQ prepared and served specialty meats and grilled vegetables from their exquisite grills, and Jenn-Air kept the party buzzing with espresso samples from its state-of-the-art kitchen. Nourison, York Wallcoverings and Jenn-Air provided silent auction items benefiting SIA Projects, and support for the organization was also extended by Snyder Diamond, Robert Allen, S. Harris, Theodore Alexander, Diane James and the gracious hosts at Hotel Lautner.

Thanks to the ever-evolving concept of outdoor living, too, warm weather also brings with it more thoughtfully designed spaces to experience those pleasures. Over the last several years, designers have embraced nature in a big way, creating fully loaded outdoor family rooms, elaborate fire pits and wow-worthy pools. Even the once-humble pool house has undergone a dramatic change from utilitarian changing spot to a luxurious destination in itself, as witnessed in this elegant East Hampton, New York, property by Dan Scotti Design. OPEN AIR This Malibu, California, retreat was designed to give its owners a sunny respite from harsh winters on the East Coast, where they are based. To take full advantage of the sweeping coastline views, Studio Bracket oriented the house toward the ocean, and opened it up to create a seamless transition from indoors to outside. “The covered exterior spaces become an extension of the living room and kitchen, increasing the footprint and bringing the casual Malibu lifestyle outdoors,” says designer Wayne Chevalier. studiobracket.com

While it’s probably tempting for landscape architects to cover the countryside in vibrant colors, sometimes a more restricted palette is needed. For this Dutch-inspired house in New Canaan, Connecticut, for example, Doyle Herman Design Associates opted for a more earthy, subdued scheme. “Oversize bluestone leads from the kitchen to the dining terrace, while linear gestures of ornamental grasses and hedges of boxwoods play off the contemporary style of this modern farmhouse,” says principal designer Kathryn Herman. dhda.com

IN THE ROUND It’s hard to top the Mad Men-era fabulousness of the Trousdale Estates section of Beverly Hills: After all, Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin once called the midcentury neighborhood home. To honor that history, Los Angeles-based Elysian Landscapes brought a dose of retro glamour to the backyard of a 1959 glass-and-concrete house by creating this showstopper of a fire pit. “The generous banquette was once a low concrete block wall hidden behind a hedge of bamboo, so we increased the height of the wall and hid speakers in the plantings,” says designer Judy Kameon. “Now, it’s a perfect setting for enjoying cool evenings.” Bring on the s’mores… and martinis! elysianlandscapes.com

Thinking outside of the box takes on a new meaning when you actually punch a hole in that box, which is exactly what Australian designer Carole Whiting did to create this cozy nook. By opening up a wall in the living room to make a niche that’s both window and daybed, Whiting invited more light into the space and gave the eventual inhabitants the option of being simultaneously inside and out. “To contrast with the soft, neutral palette indoors, we made the bed black, which further unifies it with the exterior,” says Whiting. whitingarchitects.com

Perhaps no other perch conveys a playful Bohemian vibe quite like a hanging swing chair. The original bamboo version of this porch staple was designed by Giovanni Travasa in 1958, but the style really caught on in the freewheeling ’60s and ’70s when natural materials were all the rage. Tidelli’s new Painho swing here, designed by Rosenbaum e o Fetiche, is made with nautical rope and high-grade aluminum for indoor or outdoor use and comes in an impressive array of summertime colors—52 to be exact. tidelli.com

Minimalist architecture demands clean lines, so it’s no wonder the latest technological advancements in glass walls allow for bigger expanses and slimmer frames and stiles. A killer view, of course—like the one at this Healdsburg, California, family ranch designed by Ali Davin of San Francisco-based firm Jute. “To draw the eye outside, we intentionally kept the furnishings sparse so they wouldn’t distract from the scenery,” she says. “The wood ceiling, concrete walls, stone floors, metal chairs and linen curtains keep the look rustic and understated, while Rose Uniacke’s dining table made of pippy oak helps anchor the space and tie it to the natural landscape.” jutehome.com

In the high-end residential market, landscape architects are always on the lookout for new and exciting elements to incorporate into timeless outdoor spaces. And Josh Rezac, president of design studio ma, is no exception. “I’m inspired by what can be achieved with a combination of creativity, understanding, ingenuity, and the wide range of garden accessories and furniture available today,” he says. Taking gardens from concept to finish is what drives the landscape architect, whose philosophy is deeply rooted in creating thoughtful gardens that reflect and complement the people, architecture and environment in and around them. “We concentrate heavily on design that best suits the space and the people who enjoy the garden,” he explains. “Our understanding of materials and details makes our brand distinct.” With water conservation a top trend, Rezac affirms that finding the balance between good design and environmental responsibility is more crucial than ever.

Beautiful, functional outdoor spaces are a must for today’s homeowner, so it’s only natural that builders are embracing the indooroutdoor experience as well. According to JMG Builders’ president Joe Glaeser, a well-designed outdoor space needs lush vegetation, but also a smart mix of water and fire features. “So often, we cater to one sense, the visual sense, so I love it when we build something that caters to all five senses—feeling the heat from a fire pit, smelling the flowers, the sound from a water feature,” he says. No matter the scope or style of project, Glaeser strives to bring honesty and transparency to the building process. “I want to give clients the confidence of knowing they are working with an expert who knows how to work within their budget. What someone is purchasing from me is peace of mind.”

I think there’s a lot that builders and homeowners can do to make an impact. It’s not so much about finding a better type of PVC pipe to use, but more about a movement of thought. We’ve had thousands of years to think about what works and what is beautiful. People are moving toward zero-scape landscaping, but there’s a balance between creating a traditional outdoor space and ensuring the ecological footprint is lessened.

If you look in a real way, at an outdoor space, you can see the personality come out of the design.

From modern cabanas to weatherproof kitchens, the definition of “outdoor living” continues to expand, so adaptable products, like Reveal’s Slide & Seal™ and Lift & Slide doors, not only highlight a home’s unique aspects—like a courtyard or stunning view—but they make experiencing the outdoors a breeze. With a focus on sustainability, Reveal is also a proud partner of Lamboo®, which specializes in low-impact bamboo products, and its timber curtain walls are a popular choice for green building.

REVEAL’S PRODUCT PICKS The Slide & Seal door is one of the company’s favorites as it slides and seals automatically without the heavy lifting. This patented system improves on lift-and-slide doors in almost every way: panels glide smoothly on the recessed, stainless-steel tracks and automatically seal in the closed position; and all are operated by a single handle that disappears when not in use. Also, the Timber Curtain Wall is an innovative alternative to standard aluminum curtain wall systems. Developed in Europe for net-zero homes and extreme weather, the Timber Curtain Wall naturally achieves thermal efficiency.

IN LOS ANGELES, A DESIGNER BLENDS CLASSIC ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS WITH ECLECTIC FURNISHINGS TO FASHION AN ELEGANT FAMILY HOME. WRITTEN BY JOANNE FURIO / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURE JOLIET

Designer Janice Barta undertook both the interiors and the interior architectural design for a Los Angeles residence. In the entry, she kept the furnishings simple, incorporating two of the homeowners’ own finds—a chest and a mirror discovered at an estate sale—into a niche. The choice allows the paneling and moldings, installed under the direction of builder Garnik Badalyans, to take center stage.

D

esigner Janice Barta is a double threat. Not only is she a skilled designer effective at crafting chic, comfortable spaces for her clients, she is also a dab hand at interior architecture and detailing. For her clients, Todd and Kairavi Daum, Barta’s combination of skills proved to be the perfect match. Before settling in Los Angeles, the Daums had traveled and lived around the world, including a sojourn in Hong Kong. Knowing they were going to put down roots in Southern California, the couple began a lengthy search for the perfect neighborhood in which to make a home large enough to accommodate their three children, a Labradoodle and extended families for the holidays. Their hunt led them to a Westside locale with tree-lined streets and gracious older homes, and so they began building. Through friends, the Daums connected

with Barta, whom they tasked with facilitating the interior architectural details and furnishings. “It was only natural to work on the decorative elements and furniture as well,” Barta says. Arriving at the house-in-progress, the designer found a Regency-style dwelling of painted brick that fit seamlessly amid the older homes in the area. “It reminds us of the East Coast homes we both grew up loving,” says Todd of the residence designed by architect Philip Vertoch. Inside, though, “it’s a traditional center-hall plan with more of a contemporary feel,” Vertoch says. To create the modern vibe, the architect tweaked the traditional layout to allow for open spaces instead of closed-off rooms while maintaining certain vintage elements such as the grand entry hall with a gently curving staircase. In this elegant classic-meetscontemporary mash-up, Barta worked her magic.

Architect Philip Vertoch riffed on traditional center-hall-plan homes. Though the formal entry boasts a classic curving stairway, the space opens to the surrounding rooms in a nod to a more contemporary way of living. Making up the living room’s main seating area is a custom sofa dressed in a Lee Jofa fabric, a coffee table, a bench in a Schumacher fabric and a pair of chairs, all by Bernhardt. Both the sconces, framing a painting by artist Nguyen Thanh Binh, and the lamp on the console are by Visual Comfort & Co. Grounding the room is a custom rug from Carpet Studio & Design.

In the family room, new pieces, including a Bernhardt coffee table, a lounge chair in a Pindler fabric and a sectional, mix with a console table from Hong Kong topped with vintage lamps; the jute rug is from Carpet Studio & Design. Barta designed the beamed tongue-and-groove ceiling, while the moldings are from Saroyan Lumber.

To create dynamic spaces within the home, the designer began by specifying and drawing all the interior metalwork and woodwork, including the paneling, the cabinetry and the fireplace. She turned to rich materials—dark oak flooring, marble and Caesarstone—to add layers of detail and interest. This well-balanced aesthetic is exemplified in the kitchen, where she painted the cabinetry white and gray and used Calacatta marble with bold veining for the backsplash and on the island, yielding a more modern direction. Barta made other subtle variations to the architecture, such as laying the entryway wood in a herringbone pattern for a dramatic effect; elsewhere it’s placed end-to-end. Another intervention included coffered ceilings. “Within 10 minutes she had drawn two of her favorite styles—one of which worked perfectly for us,” Todd says. The designer integrated moldings too, taking pains to match the details with the furnishings that would grace the spaces. For example, in the entry, instead of using what she terms a “super bubbly” raised molding, Barta chose a thinner style that nearly disappears. “It made the architecture look clean,” she says, and acted as the ideal foil for more contemporary furniture choices. To execute the intricate architectural elements, the designer turned to builder Garnik Badalyans, who extended the utmost care and attention required for the project. A case in point: the skylight in the entry. “Because it had to be structurally stable to support the chandelier, electrical engineering was involved,” Badalyans says. “Luckily, we had good shop drawings from the interior design team to turn image into reality.”

3/30/17 2:27 PM

Just like the architectural detailing, Barta knew the interiors needed to deftly blend old with new. “Kairavi has a modern, fresh style,” says the designer, adding that the wife had a few pieces from Asia she wanted to mix into the home. Existing pieces from the Daums that made it into the design range from the ornately carved mirror and bow-front chest in the entry to the breakfast room’s mod Lucite chairs to a painted Chinese screen in the living room and a console table in the family room. Barta also incorporated new pieces with both traditional and modern profiles, such as the living room’s comfy, classic sofa that plays off a pair of armless lounge chairs perched on bases with a brass finish. Landscape designer Randon Garver achieved a similarly compelling mix of classic and contemporary elements in

his concept for the grounds. Terracing, a time-honored technique, broke up the slope in the front of the house. In the back, “the homeowners wanted a certain amount of hard surface space for entertaining,” says Garver, so he chose modern concrete pavers to fulfill that wish. A spacious lawn runs outward from the patio, providing a rich green carpet, and flowers bloom throughout the year. The end result is a sophisticated and charming residence that seamlessly harmonizes within the existing community. “I really appreciate how some neighbors feel this home could have been a part of their neighborhood for years,” Barta says, “but I’m most pleased that my clients feel I was able to work collaboratively, understanding their voice and design sensibilities, and translate that through my work and my own design direction.”

The home’s layout emphasizes indoor/outdoor living. To that end, a LaCantina bifold, wood-clad door opens the family room directly onto a covered area perfect for alfresco living and dining. The dining portion features an RH table and chairs. Adjacent is a seating area with Sunbrella fabric on the clients’ existing sofa.

“I’M DRAWN TO THE JUXTAPOSITION OF THE DISSIMILAR AND LIFE’S CORE PARADOXES.”

I

’ve always been visually and intellectually curious, and done work that fostered creativity and empowerment,” says Bonnie Saland, the founder of Philomela, a textile and wallpaper company. Until recently, though, Saland, a practicing psychoanalyst, did not devote much formal time to her artistic side. But that changed when, with her children grown, she and her husband, attorney Mark Beck, moved to a cottage in Pasadena. “It’s small and cozy,” she says. Yet it gave her just enough space to set up a studio where she could explore her passion for drawing, painting and printmaking. Saland then began conceiving designs, often starting with journal sketches, rooted in themes of birth, survival, death and regeneration. With digital manipulation, she transformed the images into patterns that lent themselves to home furnishings. In 2015, she launched Philomela (named for the Greek mythological figure who lost her tongue and communicated through her weavings) and now offers a catalogue of more than 200 designs available at Quintus in L.A., and other showrooms around the country. Guided by the belief that color and pattern yield a more joyful environment, Saland notes that she likes to use her energy and strength “to contribute to what uplifts.” But a closer examination of her designs reveals a much deeper meaning. “The subject matter for my work is taken from the personal and collective unconscious, as well as figurative, geographic, literary or visual prompts,” the designer says. “I’m drawn to the juxtaposition of the dissimilar and life’s core paradoxes: chaos and control, masculine and feminine, absence and ornamentation, mystery and the body. Conceptually, psychoanalytic thought and Buddhism are my deepest influences.”

Travel, too, informs Saland’s work. She’s currently planning a trip to Africa and recently returned from Marfa, Texas, where she was captivated by artist Donald Judd’s work and legacy. A more frequent journey is the trip she takes north to her second home in Sea Ranch where she and her husband spend part of their time. “For me, the Sonoma Coast is one of those spots where you truly sense the ‘thinly veiled’ barrier between this world and the next,” she says, noting that its ocean views offer a perfect counter to the more frenetic pace of life in the L.A. area. “They’re very different experiences that trigger many distinct ideas,” she says. Regardless of where she goes, the artist is never without her journals and art materials. Lately, Saland has turned her attention to exploring historic textiles and their techniques such as shibori (a Japanese form of tie-dyeing), bojagi (a traditional Korean wrapping cloth), embroidery and tapestry weaving. This spring, she is designing for her daughter Jeorgea Beck’s handbag and lifestyle company, La Fortuna. But whatever brings her into the studio simply makes her happy. As she puts it, “I love learning new skills and making things. Being able to do what interests me, driven by my deepest values, feels like rightful work and intentional living—both seem central to a life well-lived.”

O

n her blog Velvet & Linen, designer Brooke Giannetti chronicled the highlights of the journey she and her architect husband, Steve Giannetti, embarked on to create their own home in Ojai—and the home’s pleasing Mediterranean-meets-modern sensibility caught the eye of a couple preparing to build a vacation residence in the San Diego area. “They fell in love with what we do and wanted something similar but in the French Normandy style,” Brooke recalls. “Our cleaned-up European home with its limited palette really spoke to them.” The Giannettis and their project manager, Laura Putnam, soon discovered their clients had already purchased a property with an existing 1920s French Normandy-style house and had plans to scrap and replace it. Based on its poor condition and small, dark rooms common to the era, the Giannettis heartily agreed with the couple’s decision. “Not only was the layout not conducive to modern living, the building was so badly positioned you couldn’t even see the water,” says Steve, who by his own admission had

never worked on this style of architecture. In response, he conducted a thorough study of similar houses, taking copious pictures and making sketches of the iconic brick details, conical stone turrets and steep roof pitches. “I then took all the best elements of all the best houses and incorporated them into my design,” he adds. The architect’s improvements started with positioning the new structure higher up the site to guarantee ocean views for the living and dining rooms and master suite. “The beach side is nearly all glass,” Steve says. To accommodate visits from the couple’s grown children, guest rooms are accessible via an exterior staircase. According to the architect, the clever layout allows the house to shrink and expand as needed. “When the homeowners are there by themselves, the main living areas operate like a small cottage,” he says. On the exterior where the overarching goal was authenticity, elements such as plaster walls, a basketweave brick patio and a wood-shingle roof accomplish that objective. To get those details just right, the design

For the street face of a French Normandy-style home in the San Diego area, architect Steve Giannetti included authentic details such as half timbering and steep roof pitches in his design; Schott Roofing installed the wood shingles. Builder Pat Dougherty oversaw all aspects of the construction, including the installation of the Marvin windows and doors from Builder’s Window Supply.

duo turned to builder Pat Dougherty, who had experience working with homes of this style. “It was important that things have a sense of age, so we staggered the shingles, and we kicked and mudded the tile on the hips and ridges so they didn’t look too uniform,” Dougherty says. “Similarly, when it came to the timbers, we distressed and sandblasted them to make them look old.” Inside, the architect’s open floor plan was an intentional break with the French Normandy style of yesteryear. In the 1920s, for example, the kitchen would have been tucked out of sight, but the current iteration features an expansive culinary center with double islands. “When 20 people show up on a weekend, they all want to be in the kitchen, so we thought we might as well make it the centerpiece,”

says Steve. He and his wife then designed the cabinetry to resemble furnishings. “We mixed and matched the pieces to look like they were brought in over time,” adds Brooke. The kitchen was part of a larger husband-and-wife collaboration that began early with Steve drafting a preliminary plan that incorporated drawings of Brooke’s furniture choices and the beige, blue and gray color scheme. “This allowed the owners to see a full-blown version of how the finished product would look, which really minimizes the number of changes,” she says. The synergistic approach also kept the couple in sync so that architectural elements such as the ceiling beams stained to match the local driftwood coordinated with the streamlined palette.

Inspired by the sand and sea, the soft hues harmonize perfectly with the home’s casual beachy intent that begins in the living room with the seating in durable indoor/outdoor coverings. A limestone fireplace and a chandelier created from old candelabra parts read as French accents but with a noticeably low oh là là factor. “There isn’t anything here you would call fancy French,” says Brooke. “The fireplace surround doesn’t have a lot of carving, and the chandelier has no crystals and is not fussy at all.” Further tempering the Gallic feel are two small columns that function as side tables for a rustic interjection. In the dining room, the woven chairs and rug are classic beach house elements that offer a textural layer.

“Because the palette is so neutral, you need texture,” Brooke says. Peppering the spaces with antique books and accessories—such as a pair of old crates topped with cushions for seating—helps maintain a sense of history, while a series of model boats and other maritime references lend a nautical component to the home’s overall theme. “We like to say our designs are ageless, classic and calm,” Brooke says, emphasizing the latter. In accordance, every room throughout the house benefits from an easy merger of sandy beige and aqua blue. That consistency both serves as connective tissue and imbues the house with the tranquil aura that beach vacation living is all about. LUXESOURCE.COM / 261

nce a couple in the entertainment industry bought their starter house in a Los Angeles canyon, they knew they wouldn’t sell it until they were ready to build their dream home. Fourteen years later, it was time. They purchased a property on a hill with sweeping views from downtown to the Getty Center with the goal of creating a light-filled and sustainable dwelling. “It’s symbolic of them,” says Duan Tran, who, with Grant Kirkpatrick, made up the architectural team on the three-year project. “They’re both at a point in their careers where they are taking the next step up. Building a house of this caliber at the top of the hill—it has a lot of meaning.” Designer Tim Clarke, who had worked with the couple on their first home, brought the architects on board. “We got along very well,” Clarke says of the homeowners. “And they said, ‘We promise someday we’re going to build our dream home, and when we do, you’re our guy.’ I’ve heard that a million times, but it actually worked out.” Clarke

understood this project came with the responsibility to create a place that his clients would love for many years. “I knew these people weren’t just going to live there for 10 years and move on,” the designer says. “This is it.” Clarke, along with Tran and Kirkpatrick, developed a village-like concept with a guesthouse and motor court focused around the main house, which is dominated on the first floor by a double-volume great room where the kitchen, dining and living areas flow together. “I really love that room,” Clarke says of the central area. “I love this concept of big public spaces that everyone hangs out in together.” From there, a wall of glass doors opens to the backyard filled with panoramic views. The couple wanted the residence to embrace its surroundings. “We also wanted it to be flexible—intimate for a couple or to expand for a fund-raiser of 200 people,” the wife says. And unlike other clients, having many bedrooms wasn’t a priority for the homeowners. Rather, since they both work from home, it was important their home offices reflect

Architects Grant Kirkpatrick and Duan Tran selected mahogany and stone for the façade of their clients’ village-like Los Angeles residence, carefully integrating the home into its hilltop setting. The entrance leads into the central living space, while the homeowners’ offices branch off to either side.

Right: Indoor-outdoor living was one of the key design goals for the residence. The glass doors of the great room lead to an entertaining area that is spacious enough for hosting large parties but is arranged so there are separate areas to have intimate conversations. For one, a pair of Sutherland chairs with cushions outfitted in Perennials fabric join a table from Mix Furniture. Opposite: The great room brings together the living room, dining room and kitchen. A rocker from Amsterdam Modern and a Minotti chair, ottoman and sectional, grouped around a Baker coffee table, provide comfortable spots for lounging in the living area. Accenting the space are the deep tones of a silk-andwool rug from J.H. Minassian & Co. and a Fuse Lighting chandelier from Thomas Lavin.

their personalities. So, the team pulled their work spaces off the central axis in different directions—hers, a Zen-infused space on the first floor, and his, a cantilevered volume on the second level. “I wanted to see earth and water when I looked out my office window,” the wife says. “My husband loved the feeling of a floating aerie.” Steering down a different path than the typical glass box at the top of the hill, the team used board-formed concrete and mahogany to create a warm environment. “The concrete really allows the wood and stone to stand out,” Kirkpatrick explains. To ensure the home was built with the skills of an artisan, the architects enlisted general contractor Jim Davis, who brings his experience as a furniture maker and woodworker to his endeavors. “He’s one of the few true craftsmen left,” Kirkpatrick says. “He puts together a house by hand.” Case in point: the showstopping spiral staircase that Davis created. “There’s an interpretive

process of taking the architect’s plans, disassembling them and then figuring out how to put them back together,” Davis says. “As much as I love the beauty of it, there’s a massive amount of effort that went into that staircase.” For his part, Clarke was challenged to push the envelope in terms of color. “We wanted it to be warm,” says the wife, “no Guggenheim-type cold modern.” She nixed any neutrals, Clarke says. “It’s very easy to create these houses with a great view and warm wood and keep it monochromatic and contemporary,” the designer says. Instead, he veered in a different direction, using strong, vibrant colors. “The backdrop of that beautiful wood really lends itself to teal, purple and pink tones,” he says. Landscape architect Jerry Williams was charged with finding a balance of openness and seclusion. “There is no question that the view is the primary feature of the site,” he says, “but the way the house is tucked into

This small perch sits atop a spiral staircase that rises above the gardens designed by landscape architect Jerry Williams. Louvers shade some of the windows, offering privacy while still allowing light to flow inside. Opposite: Below the husband’s office, which hovers above the hillside, is another sitting area for the couple to relax with their guests. The master bedroom is a prime example of designer Tim Clarke’s decision to use jewel tones throughout the home. The silk-and-wool rug is from Woven. the hillside provides many opportunities to craft more intimate spaces.” An exploration of the property reveals discrete outdoor areas that allow the owners to escape with a good book, sip a cup of tea or take a moment for reflection. Williams created a blend of native plantings and flora from similar climates, creating a rich tapestry of color and texture. For all the effort to design a beautiful home both inside and outside, the driving force was always to create a sustainable residence. “The whole roof is essentially one big solar panel,” Tran says. “It is at a 15-degree angle that maximizes the solar production of the house and almost puts it at net zero.” Designing for natural ventilation, incorporating drain-water systems, and using FSC-certified woods and insulated glass all played a role in achieving this goal. The final realization is a home of elegance and sustainability that pays homage to nature. “The house doesn’t feel like it came from somewhere else,” Clarke says. “It has a sense of place, like it could’ve come from the earth.”

Draperies of Clarence House sheer linen in the master bathroom are the gauzy backdrop for a sculptural Waterworks tub and faucet. A silk-and-wool rug from Woven adds a cozy touch. The large-format floor tile is from Cavendish Grey.

How would you describe your clientele? The line between designer and client has been blurred a bit, because there is so much access to design and style information. Our clients are at the forefront of this by being well-educated and sophisticated enough to collaborate in a meaningful way with an architect or designer.

MARK DREXLER + ASSOCIATES

From a luxurious enclave nestled in the Hollywood Hills to a sprawling Bel Air mansion, Mark Drexler + Associates has built a portfolio showcasing some of the most stunning home building and remodeling projects in the Los Angeles area. While the scope of projects the firm has completed is indicative of a large-scale firm, president Mark Drexler has ensured that his namesake company maintains the intimacy of a boutique firm. “We sought to be more of a boutique, as opposed to a mega organization,” Drexler explains. “I felt we could fill a niche in the ultrahigh-end residential market, and though we have built from the ground up and completed makeover remodels, our projects tend to be very fine remodels and additions.” For Drexler, the firm is a culmination of his lifelong passions. “Art, architecture, design and building have been a part of my life ever since I can remember, because they were also an important part of my parents’ life and, later, my architectural studies,” he says. The firm is committed to providing the highest quality products and completing projects on time and on budget, but exemplary customer service is always a top priority. “Our key influences are always the clients and designers with whom we work. It is imperative that we are engaged in their vision,” Drexler says. “We want our work to be recognizable by the quality of craftsmanship, but there is no better measure of success than when our clients refer us and call us back for subsequent projects.”

What is your creative process? What is your favorite part of it? Sometimes a solution emanates from experience, and sometimes the process is more like a shotgun approach. I like being unafraid to try different choices until there is an organic solution that feels true. What are your favorite styles to work on and why? I appreciate any style that has been well-executed, but I grew up in a succession of midcentury modern homes, so I probably lean a little in that direction.

Ask the Expert Armen and Vod Alajian Principals

What is inspiring you now? Nature inspires me every day. Where I live, the sun comes up over the Pacific Ocean, which is not the norm for Californians. I try to capture the beauty and uniqueness of what I see in our products.

ARTO

Looking at ARTO’s line of ceramic and concrete products, one can see and feel the history, craftsmanship and care behind every design. “Capturing the depth of life in a product takes years of experience, creativity, hard work and sweat. All of this was embodied in ARTO’s founder, my father, Arto Alajian,” principal Armen Alajian says. “My brother, Vod, and I continue to keep our father’s legacy alive by offering customers handcrafted ceramic and rustically elegant concrete products.” Arto’s creativity and work ethic came from his unique life experiences. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, he was classically trained in the arts and exposed to the ancient architecture of Egypt. In 1962, he traveled through America and Canada, finally settling in Venice, California. For additional income, Arto made lightweight, old-world-looking clay brick veneers, and sold them to the customers on his milk route. The thin brick became so popular, he quit his job and started ARTO in 1966. Today, its products are still made the traditional way, with skilled human hands and local materials, and can be seen in residential and commercial projects, and high-end resorts and restaurants around the world, from Malibu to Mexico; Chile to Cape Cod; Shanghai to Tokyo; and beyond. To expand their product line, the brothers look to clients for inspiration. “At their request, we craft new designs and shapes, recreate historical tiles, and modernize traditional designs,” Armen says. “These requests often open up new design directions for us to explore and innovate.” When asked about their favorite product, Armen points to the rustically elegant Artillo tiles. “Not only are they my father’s original designs, but they fill a more masculine niche in the tile market.”

What do you regard as the greatest success in your career to date? Providing for 75 families as well as surviving and thriving during the downturn of 2008. The most important thing is remembering the most important assets of our company— vendors, employees and customers. What led you to your current profession? My brother and I were born into the business, and our father involved us in all facets of it. We learned the hard way by starting at the bottom and working our way up. We were even fired a few times. When he felt we were finally ready, he passed ARTO onto us to continue his legacy.
