EDITOR’S LETTER
W
ow...I can’t believe it’s 2020! We’re kicking off this next decade of design with a bang! Welcome to our annual GOLD LIST edition, where we toast the incredible design talents from across the country who were featured in our pages the past year. We’re also saluting a new crop of creatives in the Luxe New Guard. All of these designers, architects, builders and landscape architects are storytellers of a sort. They weave their narrative to create thoughtful environments through the inventive use of materials, lighting, home decor and terrain. We applaud them all...and look forward to being inspired by them for many decades yet to come.

Fresh FACES
LUXE INTRODUCES THE LATEST CROP OF BREAKTHROUGH DESIGNERS WITH EXCITING AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES.
ASHTON TAYLOR SPEEGLE
Houston | ashtontaylorinteriors.com Why we love her: Uncommitted to any one style, Ashton Taylor Speegle is known for layering iconic design elements in elegantly unexpected ways. Formerly an interior designer for Gulfstream Aerospace’s private aircrafts, Speegle creates harmonious environments that streamline client essentials while incorporating their personal styles. On the horizon: Despite a busy year ahead with projects spanning from Seattle to Savannah, Speegle’s focus is on expanding the company’s reach in Houston by offering a style unique to the city. In her words: “Rhythm has always been a design principle that intrigues me the most—the way your eye travels across a room and the journey it takes. I believe a room can offer a small exploration for its inhabitants and guests.”
WRITTEN BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE
⊳ MORGAN NEWFIELD
▲ MATTHEW MONROE BEES
Charleston | matthewmonroebees.com Why we love him: Matthew Monroe Bees is adept at mingling periods and genres by incorporating modern pieces with traditional interiors and antiques. Influenced by design greats like Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, Bees intentionally plans his clients’ spaces with entertaining and conversation in mind. On the horizon: The designer is working on his book—a combination of design, entertaining and lessons learned from growing up in the heart of Alabama. In his words: “I remember when people worried that the future of design was somehow going to look cookie-cutter, but it’s refreshing to see that antiques and art are once again becoming important to a younger audience.”
LX_COM29_Radar_NewGuard.indd 68
Why we love her: With experience at Ferguson & Shamamian in New York and Barbara Barry in Los Angeles, Morgan Newfield’s unique background working for East and West Coast industry greats has given her design vision a bicoastal edge. Her projects emanate a certain clarity with calm and inviting spaces. On the horizon: In between projects in Laguna Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades and San Francisco, Newfield is traveling abroad to gather inspiration and shop for clients. In her words: “I’m always changing my personal style—updating it, modernizing it and simplifying it. Whatever I’m trying on for size—relating to clothing, furniture or a home—it must be authentic and have an honest starting point.”

⊳ ROBBIE AUBREY MCMILLAN AND MARCUS MAXWELL KELLER
San Francisco | aubreymaxwell.com Why we love them: As partners in life and business, Robbie Aubrey McMillan and Marcus Maxwell Keller share a passion for design that honors natural materials while highlighting art. The firm, a fusion of the designers’ middle names, is driven by the principle that all elements of an environment must possess an energy or power that is meaningful and functional to the space’s occupants. On the horizon: The duo is working on a project, launching in mid-2020, involving the complete renovation of a turn-of-the-century grand Victorian building in Pacific Heights. In their words: “We are most excited about the opportunity to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and building practices into our projects. It’s more critical than ever that all industries reduce their impact on the environment, and even as a small company, we believe we can make a difference by example.”
SHANTI CRAWFORD ⊲
Why we love her: A believer in buying local and sourcing in a socially responsible manner, Shanti Crawford strives to deliver character, longevity, individuality and creativity that spans all cultures. As a firm that evolved from Crawford’s roots in human rights and development work, sourcing fair trade goods with a respect for materials and craftsmen remains paramount to the company’s ideology. On the horizon: Crawford is restoring a landmark home from the 1700s in Bellport, New York, and also reviving an old farmhouse in a rural village in northwestern Spain. In her words: “I’ve lived in four continents, a dozen countries and have traveled extensively to another five dozen. Each of those places has informed my taste, my appreciation for crafts indigenous to those regions and architecture. I’m constantly absorbing new influences into my design practice, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

▲ KAT LAWTON
Seattle | katlawton.com Why we love her: Kat Lawton is a master at blending opposing elements: simple with ornate, organic with the refined, or rugged alongside the delicate. On the horizon: With a natural inclination toward Spanish detailing and casual living, Lawton hopes to expand her work into the California market. This year, she’ll also be opening a new office location in Tacoma, Washington, with plans to grow her team. In her words: “I have a strong architectural eye and look to the bones of a space first as a jumping-off point. Also, I have a good balance between left and right brain, so I’m an organized problem solver, yet still creative.”
⊳ KATIE TARATSAS
Scottsdale | katiebowedesign.com Why we love her: Growing up with a developer father and an artistic mother, Katie Taratsas childhood was spent examining finishes, knocking on columns and studying with a great curiosity how spaces are created. After exploring other careers, she finally took the plunge a decade ago and attended interior design school. Founding her own company in 2016, Taratsas crafts interiors from the ground up with a holistic and varied perspective that makes for beautiful and meaningful interiors. On the horizon: The designer is working on exciting projects in the Phoenix Valley, an area experiencing a renaissance as a vibrant and youthful place. In her words: “The industry has really transformed over the past five years through our increasing exchange of ideas, sentiments and technology. I am so jazzed by the recognition of the power of design across so many industries.”

Dallas | ejinteriors.net Why we love her: Known for designing spaces that capture the essence of her clients’ lifestyles and personalities, Emily Larkin brings a renewed perspective to her interiors by combining vivid hues, dramatic patterns and a mix of vintage and new pieces. On the horizon: Based in Dallas, Larkin is looking forward to projects and opportunities throughout Texas and beyond. In her words: “I live in a 1920s Tudor-style home and I consider it my design laboratory. It’s very important to me to preserve the original architecture and character of these older homes, and my own personal style reflects that notion. I often combine inherited and collected pieces while blending them with updated and unexpected modern touches.”
LATHEM GORDON AND CATE DUNNING ⊲
Atlanta | gordondunning.com
Why we love them: Both self-proclaimed history nerds, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning are passionate about telling their clients’ stories through their homes. The pair roots their aesthetic in the classics with a nod toward the contemporary. On the horizon: This year includes moving into a new studio, starting a few historical renovations and working on a rewarding commercial project. In their words: “Our signature is to pair family heirlooms with fresh pieces in a way that is simultaneously fine and comfortable. It’s so important to live your daily life, but to understand that you never have to sacrifice style in order to do so.”

▼ EMILY LARKIN
Why we love her: By mixing old and new at a time when every other home either looked like a furniture showroom or an antique store, Amy Herman started her own design firm in 1996 with a unique vision that is not purist in any style. She continues to broaden the design conversation by, for example, pairing a Louis XIV commode with a modern piece of art, or adding an ornate crystal chandelier to a Shaker-style kitchen. On the horizon: Herman is designing a tabletop product line that is eco-friendly and made from recycled materials. In her words: “I love the idea of function before form—a room needs to work and not just be pretty. Also, I am not a fan of embellishment or kitsch. I prefer to let the furnishings and objects speak for themselves.”

ith one look at Mish Tworkowski’s vibrant brooches and bracelets, it’s no surprise that the jewelry designer doesn’t own a single article of black clothing. “I always have a difficult time when people ask me, “What’s my favorite color? Or what’s my favorite stone?’ ” says Tworkowski. “I could fall in love with a new color every day!” While the jewelry designer has become internationally known for his stunning pieces, it’s his own bold and irreverent style that keeps him at the forefront of all aspects of design— fashion, interiors, art and beyond. Tworkowski sat down with Luxe to talk color, nature (he’s a trustee of the New York Botanical Garden), craftsmanship and, of course, good design. In a past life, who was Mish Tworkowski? A million years ago, I’m sure I was a huntergatherer based upon my love for the natural world coupled with traveling. Going someplace new is what I love—walking on the beach, through a botanical garden, in the woods or even walking down a city street. I also have a lifelong passion for gardening. Nothing can compete with nature, because it’s a nonstop bonanza of beauty—full of ideas and inspiration. Speaking of nature, you and your partner have a country house in Millbrook, New York. How do those surroundings factor into your work? If you take time to look at the simple things and study them, you realize there is art all around us. For example, we had this freak snowstorm and it caused a lot of damage. Trees were down; there was debris everywhere. Yet there was a silver lining: As I was looking at the scattered pieces of bark, I noticed their beautiful textures and patterns. There’s something daring yet romantic about the use of color in your pieces. I’m not afraid of color. I could stand in front of a Rothko for hours and look
LX_COM29_Radar_BTB.indd 76
at two colors next to each other and think about how they work with each other, or wander through a garden and study how two flowers look next to each other. I believe color is a great gift to design. How does jewelry elevate a look? Often, jewelry is the first thing people see; the first thing you notice on a woman is earrings. In a way, jewelry transcends fashion. People who buy fine jewelry are often thinking it’s forever. It’s almost like they’re little sculptures or amulets of significance that you carry. When jewelry is done well, it has a universality to it. Who inspires you? I have great admiration for the craftsmen of the 19th and early-20th centuries. Like Fabergé, which was doing excellent work during that time period. Also, the craftsmanship of early Cartier and Van Cleef was beautiful. Give us your design playbook. In order to have good design you need to have great thought. We’re all sponges—the more we absorb, the better we create. A designer needs to walk through a museum because art is so instrumental in creating what you love and wanting to perfect it in yourself. And because we’re not born with perfect skills, we’re tasked with taking our talent and what we love to do and creating the best we can.

The BIKOFF Effect A NEW VERVAIN COLLABORATION EVOKES SPIRITED FUN AND A LOOK AT THE GLAM LIFE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY UNRUH
The textiles created by designer Sasha Bikoff for Vervain tell tales of the glamorous life. For instance, take Uptown Toile, a textile showing a woman who resembles a cross between Bikoff and a youthful Brigitte Bardot waterskiing on the French Riviera, strolling with two poodles down Madison Avenue and reclining under a cabana at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The same feeling can be found in the print dubbed A Few of My Favorite Things, which depicts items the designer collects or covets, including crystal glasses that once graced her grandfather’s bar, an Hermès Birkin bag and Madonna’s iconic Jean Paul Gaultier corset. If the prints seem heavy on imagery, blame Instagram. “My generation is consumed by pictures on social media. They see hundreds each day, and it excites their creativity,” says Bikoff. “You could even look at these fabrics as my Insta-highlights.”
LX_COM29_Radar_Collaboration.indd 78
The roots of the designer’s maximalist aesthetic lie in her New York City childhood. “I was raised during the height of minimalism in the 1990s when people, including my mother, favored the style of Calvin Klein,” explains Bikoff. “I preferred my grandmother’s style— a look that, with puddled drapes and crystal chandeliers, resembled Versace fashions. As a teen, I rebelled by painting love quotes in pink all over my room’s white walls.” Bikoff believes this design mutiny is shared with many of her fellow millennials. “We favor interiors that evoke sentiment through pattern and color,” she explains. Seeking to tap into Bikoff’s joie de vivre, Fabricut executives approached her to create the collection for Vervain. “Her unique point of view relates to classical design and style, but is also hip and funky,” says Nina
Butkin, Fabricut’s vice president of design. “It’s sophisticated, but also fresh and young.” It’s a look Bikoff believes will appeal. “I think a lot of people, women in particular, want to love and embrace these things,” she says. “In a way, my fabrics are an invitation for people to join the party.”

LAUNCH DAKOTA JACKSON
POST MASTERS @aardvarkletterpress
WHO: The family-run business has been the go-to resource for custom letterpress printing since 1968, attracting well-known clients like Oprah Winfrey and costume designer Arianne Phillips. WHAT: They create everything from invitations and note cards to artists’ prints, frequently collaborating with Shepard Fairey and, most recently, Gajin Fujita. WHY: With philanthropist Nicolas Berggruen as the new owner of their 1924 Stiles O. Clements-designed building and Commune— a longtime Aardvark client—on board as the design team, expect exciting new arts programming aimed at regenerating MacArthur Park, the city’s original arts district. IN HIS WORDS: “With the digital revolution, people strayed from time-tested arts like letterpress, but more and more people are looking for ‘old school.’ What we do can’t be done fast or easily. It takes time, care and human involvement, what photographer Catherine Opie calls ‘the hand.’ ” –Cary Ocon, general manager 082 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Luxury furniture designer Dakota Jackson is celebrating his 50th anniversary with a return to the Pacific Design Center (he was previously in the Green Building in the 1990s) and a showroom that will double as a cultural events space. A prolific American designer since the ’70s (Yoko Ono famously commissioned Jackson for a “mystery desk” to give John Lennon as a 34th birthday present), Jackson recently debuted his newest furniture collection, Chess and Checkers, inspired by ancient games pieces. The designer also recently unveiled his latest collaboration with Steinway & Sons, the Black Diamond Piano that was created for classical pianist Lang Lang. “Opening in Los Angeles is an opportunity to consider the best of our classic collections along with our newest work,” says Jackson. “We are quite excited about the space that will house it, as well as the opportunity to reconnect with many friends on the West Coast.” dakotajackson.com

Breegan Jane is adding “television star” to her résumé (she’s also a blogger, real estate developer, mom and author) with her new role on this season’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on HGTV. The Santa Monica-based designer is known for her love of vintage pieces—“One time I scored a gorgeous Pakistani runner for less than $100 at Pepe’s Thrifty Shop!” she says—so Luxe asked her to share a few of her favorite resources for that perfect one-off piece. breeganjane.com
PDC DESIGN GALLERY The new PDC Design Gallery, a two-story exhibition space previously occupied by MOCA, debuted its inaugural exhibition, “Supershow,” this winter. On view through February 23, the show celebrates the work of L.A.-based artists Fallen Fruit, a collaboration between David Allen Burns and Austin Young. “With the founding of the PDC Design Gallery, we will be able to highlight our homegrown talent as well as shine a spotlight on inventive artists from around the world,” says Charles S. Cohen, owner of the Pacific Design Center. Future exhibitions will be devoted to art and design, with a focus on exploring the depth and breadth of California’s progressive design culture while also welcoming international artists and curators. Expect special commissions, immersive exhibits, architectural projects, artistdesigned furniture and textiles, and student shows that will help propel emerging L.A. talent. pacificdesigncenter.com

A TRIO OF TOMES SHOWCASES THE TALENTS OF SOME OF CALIFORNIA’S MOST RESPECTED DESIGN FIGURES.
▲ EZEQUIEL FARCA + CRISTINA GRAPPIN Philip Jodidio Mexican firm Ezequiel Farca + Cristina Grappin takes a holistic approach, designing architecture, interiors, yachts and furnishings for projects across the globe. With offices in both Mexico City and Milan, they recently opened in Santa Monica, a move that signals their growing presence on the West Coast. Now, they have their first monograph—with a foreword by Italian designer Paola Lenti—that explores the firm’s exceptional craftsmanship and understated sophistication through 16 residential and commercial projects, including an art collector’s home in Venice Beach and a mezcal bar in Oaxaca. “Society and culture shape you as a designer,” Grappin tells writer Michael Webb in an interview in the book. “I think we’re at a point where we want to return to our roots, but in a modern way. When we start an architectural project, we draw organically on our Mexican heritage and identity.” rizzoliusa.com
⊲ MGM STYLE: CEDRIC GIBBONS AND THE ART OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD Howard Gutner No film buff’s bookshelf is complete without this appropriately lavish book on one of cinema’s greatest influencers, Cedric Gibbons. As head of the art department at Metro-GoldwynMayer Studios from 1924 until his retirement in ’56, Gibbons realized some of the most magical sets ever captured on celluloid: Marie Antoinette, The Wizard of Oz, Brigadoon and An American in Paris. Credited on more than 1,500 films and having been nominated 39 times for the Academy Award for Best Production Design, he brought home the Oscar statuette, which he designed in ’28, 11 times. This book celebrates Gibbons with 175 photographs of his sets, several which have never before been published. lyonspress.com
▲ MASTER ARCHITECTS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 1920–1940: WALLACE NEFF Marc Appleton, Bret Parsons and Eleanor Schrader This third volume in a 12-volume series, Master Architects of Southern California 1920–1940 showcases the work of Wallace Neff, one of the West’s most revered residential architects. Neff’s career spanned some 60 years and his houses—often glamorous Spanish-style mansions—can be found throughout Los Angeles, Pasadena and Santa Barbara. He was the go-to architect for Hollywood’s elite (he designed the infamously razed Pickfair Estate for Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks in the 1920s) and his homes are still sought by design-savvy stars—Madonna and Diane Keaton have both called Neff houses home. The book explores the architect’s talent for working in myriad styles as well as his ’30s Airform (or “bubble”) houses, conceived as a means of solving the era’s housing crisis. angelcitypress.com

GREEK AND ROMAN ART
Just off the Met’s Great Hall is an airy, expansive display of Greek and Roman art, sculpture, pottery and jewelry totaling more than 30,000 pieces. Since the height of these ancient Mediterranean civilizations, design and architecture styles have come and gone yet the flawless proportions, stately structures and sleek perfectionism of the time continue to influence artisans today.

DEFINING MOMENT
MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART WING
6
Home to pieces by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Georgia O’Keefe, this department is a who’s who of the modern art movement. It was the modernists’ unusual subject matters (like Mark Rothko’s colorful shapes) and techniques (cue Jackson Pollock’s paint splatter application) that left them vulnerable to criticism for straying from tradition. Today, these walls exhibit some of the most sought-after names in the art world.

FOUNDING FATHERS THE AMERICAN WING
When settlers first arrived in the colonies, they brought with them the craftsmanship and art forms that would define a nation. Now, there’s a resurgence in traditional style, along with a yearning for more American-made products. Twenty years into the new millennium, with Colonial, early modern American, Latin American and Native American art on display, the American Wing feels refreshingly current.

Basking in floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park stands The Temple of Dendur, one of the most recognizable installations in the entire museum and the pinnacle of the Egyptian Art collection. DRAMA QUEEN PATTERN, COLOR AND TEXTURE UNITE TO CREATE RICH JEWEL-BOX SPACES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
photo: jennifer hughes. styling: charlotte safavi.
For her own master bathroom, Annapolis, Maryland-based designer Katalin Farnady brought the drama. “I took this as an opportunity to showcase how combining patterns, materials and different shades of a similar color scheme can really work together wonderfully, the designer explains. With a love for dark, moody hues, geometric motifs and sophisticated marbles, Farnady decided to go all in when it came to designing the striking space. This sentiment echoes the growing movement toward dynamic, vibrant and altogether eyecatching bathrooms where more is more. Designers are taking advantage of smaller areas and the fact that what you use, whether it be a floral wallcovering or Moroccan tile, can go further in a tiny room and certainly make a big impact.

A Waterworks bathtub sits next to the vanity painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hot Spring Stones. Arteriors sconces complement the Black Horse marble slabs on the walls.
GLAM GLOW
While designers are certainly having fun in elaborate bathrooms, Katalin Farnady of Farnady Interiors believes that you should go for what you want no matter the size of the stage. “People rarely notice if a space is small but rather what they comment on are the pieces in a room. Meaning, if you fall in love with a large-scale wallcovering or bright bathtub, go for it and don’t be shy!” she notes. Her own master bathroom is a study in contrast with graphic stone slabs on the wall, geometric tile on the floor and a more neutral beige vanity that juxtaposes beautifully with features that could be heavy or overwhelming. For Farnady, it’s all about finding balance which in turn allows you to achieve whatever you wish. farnadyinteriors.com Where did you start in this bathroom? I have a love affair with marble. So, when I saw the six slabs of Black Horse at the stone yard and realized I could create a butterfly effect on the walls, I was sold. From there, it all came together very quickly as I kept a similar color scheme— black, gray, beige—throughout. Talk to us about balance. The entire design of this space was very thought out. I knew beforehand that the shapes, colors and materials all had to be balanced. Because the walls and shower have a rather intense pattern, I knew the scale of the custom floor tile had to be smaller. The beige cabinetry tempers everything yet still ties into the overall graphic look of the space. The room feels quite light. How did you achieve this? Light was a very important element here and I wanted to make sure this bathroom was not cave-like or overwhelmed by pattern. We are lucky to have beautiful skylights in the ceiling and be on a body of water that is constantly reflecting natural light into the space.

“THERE IS A TENDENCY TO STAY AWAY FROM DARK HUES FOR A TINY ROOM. WE DECIDED TO EMBRACE THE SIZE AND GO THE OPPOSITE—DARK, DRAMATIC AND MEMORABLE.” –BARBARA REYES, fredericktang.com

In an Upper East Side townhome nicknamed “Happy House,” designer Jean-Louis Deniot collaborated with wallpaper and fabric studio Porter Teleo, customdeveloping a pattern to wrap around the closet and be seen between existing moldings. “Working in this loose, gestural way with such beautiful blues and sunny yellows was a dream,” says Kelly Porter, artist and cofounder of Porter Teleo. “We wanted it to feel like you are completely immersed in a large-scale painting.”

HOME BODIES In our increasingly connected world, home has become the ultimate refuge. After all, it is at home, during quiet evenings and lazy weekends, that we unwind, connect with kin and enjoy that most elusive of luxuries: time. As a result, exquisite amenity spaces spanning utility, wellness, entertainment and beyond are being prioritized like never before. Illustrating this mood, a Manhattan dressing room by designer Jean-Louis Deniot delights the eye as much as it stores clothes and accessories—a fitting harbinger for the design-meets-function inspiration in the pages to follow.

INNER ZEN
On the lower level of a grand Bernardsville, New Jersey, estate, Cullman & Kravis design partner Alyssa Urban and architect James Paragano imagined a room for stress relief in the form of an elegant indoor pool. While the space caters to birthday parties for the couple’s children, it serves a quieter daily purpose as well: a serene respite where the adults can exercise and relax through the seasons. The limestone cladding, round-top windows and antique English wall reliefs lend a neoclassical feel, while the ceiling, painted in a custom iridescent blue high-gloss lacquer, mirrors the azure tiles lining the pool and hot tub to transcendent effect. On the approach to the room, Urban describes “a path to tranquility,” adding that “it’s a total escape; a private place to float and find calm.” cullmankravis.com; jamesparagano.com

“A few years ago, I was asked if I could translate a silk design into vinyl for the suites at the Four Seasons,” explains Karen Robert, owner of wallpaper company Aux Abris, of her foray into the category. “So, I found a substrate with a lovely satin emboss to print on, and then I added lots of texture to help it look more aged and luxurious.” Bright new colorways join her inaugural vinyl collection, which includes Inlay (top), a techy, graphic print designed with Robert’s son, a programmer, and Garden of Eden (bottom), a moody, Art Deco-inspired mural that took Robert three years to perfect. Statement wallpaper, formerly vulnerable to water, crayon scribbles and other household offenses, is now utility room ready. auxabris.com

TOAST of the TOWN
When Mona Ross Berman conceived of this wine room and butler’s pantry in Philadelphia, the designer sited noticing “too many wine rooms done using popular tropes seen in restaurants— basic racking systems, cork flourishes, barrels, etc.,” as her inspiration to turn the tired look on its head. Working with custom fabrication company Amuneal, Berman designed a gleaming, freestanding wine gallery that dually acts as visual divide and custom storage, replete with insulated glass panes to regulate bottle temperature. “The leather slings instead of racks, detailed brass work and deep sapphire blue-glass backsplash all helped make this one-of-a-kind,” says Berman. “I wanted to make something not just attractive, but also unique.” Mission accomplished. monarossberman.com; amuneal.com

WARM WELCOME
Minnesota native Bria Hammel is known for her fresh takes on utility spaces. Here, the designer shares the notes that make this happy Kansas City, Kansas, mud room sing. briahammelinteriors.com Canine considerations. The cabinetry provides storage for dog food, leashes and toys, and we created a special kennel that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the space, installing a decorative wire mesh front and adding removable cushions that can be easily washed or swapped out. Functional flair. Our clients wanted a place to take off shoes and drop bags when they came inside, so we had these curved benches custom made to mimic the feel of antiques. Cozy details. We gave a nod to the home's traditional design with the taupe cabinetry and warm touches like the vintage baskets and Visual Comfort lanterns. To counteract that a bit, we added a cool, blue wallpaper for a European cottage vibe.

Mud rooms are upmarket now—not just utility spaces. Clients realize very often this is the first impression a visitor gets of their home, so they want the area to look cool and be spacious. We're taking it to another level with steellined boot drawers, pet food compartments, and mail storage for deliveries. peacockhome.com
The room we are most-often adding is a bar/lounge. These intimate spaces offer the ability to entertain on a small scale or just watch a game and have dinner for two at the bar. For clients who are big entertainers, we include catering elements, like undercounter warming drawers, wine units, dishwasher drawers and ice makers. blumearchitecture.com
We are seeing spaces that bring next-level entertainment value to the home. There has been an influx of golf simulators, gyms, saunas, storm shelters, and recently, we completed a bowling alley. People want new ways to experience their home and to create spaces that drive entertainment and family time. coatshomes.com
People are spending as much detail and money on their closets as they are on their kitchens. A big part of this is the global travel lifestyle today, which has affected how people organize their closets. Clients want to have access to their entire wardrobe anytime of the year, regardless of the season. suzannekasler.com
Secondary chef kitchens are bordering on a standard requirement in larger homes today. With the open floor plan becoming more and more prevalent, clients want to keep their kitchens looking clean and as a part of the living area, thus necessitating the additional kitchen to hide the real work space. docorp.net

APPROVED Proving that dead space can seamlessly morph into a functional respite is this sophisticated playroom by Charlotte, North Carolina-based designer Charlotte Lucas. Formerly a transitory second-floor landing, Lucas imagined the pass-through as a dynamic bonus room for the family’s two daughters to spread out in. “We wanted it to be outside-of-the box and playful, but not have it feel so juvenile that it wouldn’t be relevant down the road,” says the designer, noting the House of Harris “Park” trellis print grass-cloth wallpaper, vintage vinyl swivel chairs and Schumacher Citrus Garden-upholstered sofa— which was customized to fit beneath the angled ceilings and leave ample walking space—as favorite details. “That’s really the goal in all of our designs,” Lucas continues, “To not make a room feel too specific. It just needs to be exciting and fun to be in!” charlottelucasdesign.com

Once relegated to childrens’ quarters, bunk rooms have emerged as a universal favorite, lending whimsy and nostalgic appeal. In a Montana mountain home, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer elevated the concept, building rustic bunks into a guest bedroom alcove. The configuration makes for a cozy family suite or a posh “glamping” setup for close friends. Like the ceiling, the bunks are constructed of reclaimed timbers, a texture story the designer enhanced with details like plaster walls and a hand-forged iron ladder. Notes the designer, “For our clients, the idea of a bunk room embodies a home that is a welcoming place to invite friends and extended family to.” kyleeshintaffer.com

ARTS REVIVAL At a seaside estate in the fairy-tale hamlet of Siasconset, Massachusetts, architect Thomas Kligerman saw a small, forgotten outbuilding and thought: children’s art studio. “We left as much detail as possible, because we wanted a raw, work space vibe,” explains Kligerman of the original trusses that informed the renovation of the space. Collaborating with Mia Jung, Ike Kligerman Barkley’s director of interiors, he clad the walls in light-diffusing wide plank beadboard, installed a spattered concrete floor to embrace future spills, and painted the wooden doors in cheerful stripes of Benjamin Moore’s Calla Lily, Grenada Green and Lakeside Cabin—an aptly youthful nod to the tiny tenants holding court. ikekligermanbarkley.com

Where the term “foosball table” tends to evoke grungy dive bars and fraternity basements, the 90° Minuto Foosball Table by innovative Italian brand Teckell provides a welcome—read: terribly chic—turning of the tides in gaming accessories. With a 12 millimeter-thick crystal playing field, polished stainless-steel goals and a solid Canaletto walnut frame, the playful rec room addition reads as much objet d’art as competitive distraction. ARCHITECTS
May Sung Founder and Principal 310.310.2102 subu_designarchitecture subuda.com
Ask the Expert What are some of the ways clients can work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Be open-minded and always, always, always trust your trade professionals. I find I do my best work when my clients give me freedom and a clear vision.
SUBU DESIGN ARCHITECTURE Listening is the most important factor in architect May Sung’s creative approach. As the founder and principal of SUBU Design Architecture, she seeks to bring out clients’ personalities by telling their story through her award-winning designs. Such conscious reflection speaks to the warmth and character reflected in her and her team’s work. “Every piece within our creations is uniquely individualized to the client, whether it’s the bespoke detail or the playful character,” she says. Not surprisingly, SUBU’s list of repeat clients is long. What started in 2010 with a remodel of a 16-unit, mixed-use historic Brutalist building, led to custom residential projects throughout Southern California, an extensive renovation of a historic boutique hotel in downtown Palm Springs, and a recently completed luxury mountaintop retreat in Aspen. “I’ve been fortunate to have had clients that I have developed relationships with,” she says. “I’ve just recently completed the third home for a client who I’ve collaborated with for 15 years.” While Sung’s Taiwanese heritage and West Coast upbringing inspired her reverence for the Asian aesthetics of craftsmanship, her education on the East Coast exposed her to early European modernists, such as Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto. As a result, Sung captures the true essence of the yin and yang of great design.

We’re excited about the dynamic designs and decors we are creating for our current projects and look forward to expanding into our own line of SUBU furnishings and fixtures.

Tatum Kendrick Founder and Creative Director 323.522.3299 studiohus studiohus.com
Ask the Expert
STUDIO HUS “We do ‘collected eclecticism’ pretty well,” says Tatum Kendrick, founder and creative director of Studio Hus. “We are known for soulful designs rooted in historical references, but with an unexpected punch.” Such could be said of any one of the design firm’s projects, from its first—a Brentwood remodel transformed into a modern-day parlor for a family of six—to a recently completed home that Kendrick deems her “biggest success.” “We took an 8,000-square-foot classic, shingled Hamptons home and created a layered and intimate interior that’s part Victorian English manor house mixed with European pieces from the 1800s to the 1970s. The result is just enough whimsy to keep it interesting, without feeling overdone.” Key to the client experience is communication, something Kendrick feels passionately about. “I love clients who come with a thousand questions; it shows they are vested in having a successful project,” she says. Aside from the firm’s signature look, its ability to integrate architecture and interior design gives it a leg up, as well as its newest addition—a development company named ARCH—through which Kendrick and her team are building homes using their vetted approach: “We build homes that are soulful, thoughtful and have a reverence for nature and wellness,” she says.
1
In what ways do you include the client in your creative process? It could be a morning coffee closet in the kitchen or a perfectly organized closet that makes getting dressed joyful. My biggest satisfaction is positively impacting a clients’ emotions in their day-to-day life. What type of project or location would you love to take on? I would love to do a proper mountain house in Montana, Idaho or the Swiss Alps. Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work. Ilse Crawford for her belief in the emotional aspects of design; Carlo Mollino and Gio Ponti for their midcentury modern take; and Donald Judd and James Turrell.

1. “I would call this design ‘warm modernism,’” Kendrick says, referring to this East Hampton home. “I wanted to create something minimal and modern, but with traditional roots.” 2. WINDSOR SMITH CREATES THE QUINTESSENTIAL GOLDEN STATE ESCAPE “Having never lived in a ‘view house’ myself, I had seriously underestimated what a true luxury it is when your fourth wall is the vast California landscape,” Windsor Smith muses as she reflects on her latest masterpiece, a Brentwood home that epitomizes the Los Angeles lifestyle. “It makes an ordinary afternoon extraordinary. It is more than a view – it is a daily offering from the gods.”
THE NEW HOMEFRONT Appropriately dubbed “The New Homefront,” Windsor Smith’s 13,000 square foot home in the hills is in a league of its own. Gone are the days of the “McMansions,” as Smith calls them; real estate collectors are embracing a new way of luxury living. “There has been a shift to simplicity, not in a ‘lack of’ way, but in a carefully designed, thoughtfully collected, gently restrained sort of way,” Smith shares. Her clientele is no longer looking for grandiose estates, and privilege isn’t proven by palatial properties. Instead, they’re seeking well-proportioned homes where each room serves a specific purpose and is enhanced by its local surroundings.

“California has one of those natural climates that inspires people to engage with it,” Smith explains, “so in designing this house, I collaborated with landscape architect Christine London to maximize that engagement by expanding the living footprint with several transitional indoor-outdoor spaces.” The New Homefront challenges traditional architecture – it is comprised of a multi-level main house that leads out to a lush backyard and swoon-worthy zero-edge pool by Los Angeles Pool Builders. Tucked beneath the lawn is a separate guest pavilion with a bedroom, sauna and entertainment space, all leading to a private meditation garden imagined and created by Art Luna. “Part of creating a bespoke home is allowing its surrounding elements to inform the architecture. This house was designed specifically for its geography and then I pushed and pulled it until I felt confident that I maximized all opportunities,” Smith says. She did indeed. Every detail of every room is purposeful – from the arched floor to ceiling windows that invite light into the garden room, to the Modul Marble countertops stretching the kitchen into the living room, and even the integration of AirBest, whose expertise in air and heat control regulation enhances California’s indoor-outdoor architecture and lifestyle. “I believe all rooms have the ability to bring us to a meaningful place. Every room is an opportunity to live better,” Smith says. “A gym can be an opportunity for family togetherness. A garden can promote teaching and learning about life. My job is to hold that space through intention and build in elements that engage us in a deeper way.” Smith designed The New Homefront with central spaces to encourage community, engagement and wellness: “courtyards, hidden picnic spots, lawn areas for running, meditation gardens for contemplation and a rooftop deck for lofty dreaming.” Limitless space for self-expression and connecting has moved to the top of the list when it comes to creating a luxury home, especially on the West Coast. “California is the perfect habitat for joy,” Smith declares. “Though I love the change of seasons and a snow-covered mountain range as much as anyone, there is something about California’s quality of light that keeps my spirits and energy high. I believe most global families hold a residence here for that very reason. Life is just better more days of the year!”

os Angeles has no shortage of stunning historic homes, though they’re often out-glossed by modern hillside perches that get big ratings on real estate reality shows. This 1930s Englishcottage-style residence by architect H. Roy Kelley is too sophisticated for cat fights and tired plotlines, though it is a story about dramatic transformations. “We loved the architecture, that’s what drew us to the house,” the wife says about the property in leafy Little Holmby. While the character and period details were alluring, the couple—native Angelenos with two young boys—discovered the house also had the holy grail of family living (and peacekeeping): green space. “We wanted a big backyard, and to find flat land in Los Angeles,” she says, leaving us to calculate the probability. A design lover with a self-professed weakness for cool lighting, the client was flipping through a magazine when she landed on the Pacific Palisades residence of designer Alison Palevsky. It was the aesthetic she craved: contemporary and stylish, but also livable. Coincidentally, the couple and Palevsky share a common connection: The wife’s dear friend Randie Kleinman, a landscape designer who consulted on the gardens. Soon, Palevsky went from consulting on color to ushering in a chic revise that merged manor house with modern life. “The first thing I always look at when we start a project is the bones, the architecture,” says the designer, “because you can’t take something that’s in a certain architectural style and completely change it. You have to keep a little bit of what’s there and pay homage to it. So, the floor plan and style were dictated first by the architecture and then by the way they wanted to live.”

Imposing an open concept scheme on a vintage gem would be heavy handed. Instead, Palevsky let the spaces breathe. Her masterful edit blended vintage furnishings, custom pieces and modern variations that didn’t betray precedent. To establish a clean slate, the walls and knotty pine beams received coats of soft white paint with contrasting glossy black trim, a tailored nod to the 1920s and ’30s. Palevsky selected urbane furnishings that didn’t assert formality but didn’t retreat from it either. Slinky custom pieces and a variety of seating areas dress the living room. The couple enjoys the space constantly, hosting friends or retreating after dinner to sit by the fireplace— a formerly massive presence the designer tamed with a crisp modern iteration in marble. The husband wanted a built-in bar for in the living room, but the wife initially resisted, citing bachelor pad vibes. Palevsky responded with a custom walnut and brass creation. “It’s more of an elegant piece of furniture,” she explains. The clients’ growing art collection, a particular passion of the husband’s, deserved elevated surroundings. An art collector herself, Palevsky embraced the chromatic works by Julio Le Parc, John Baldessari and Adam Henry. One large, colorful piece by Max Steven Grossman in the dining room depicts the ultimate curated shelfie. “The goal was to achieve this balance between old and new,” she says, noting the 1960s Murano chandelier and edited furnishings in the space. “The vintage chairs are from a similar period and the overdyed Persian rug feels young and hip because it’s a modern take, but it adds a textual component.” The wife’s dream kitchen, featuring a generous waterfall island and breakfast nook, required a complete overhaul. She worked with Jesse Harrison, principal of Harrison Design, on the plans, and then Palevsky infused it with her own touches. “This is where my story blended with Alison’s,” says the wife of the space. “I wanted it to feel youthful, I didn’t want the traditional white kitchen.” A blend of bluegray cabinetry and brass accents assure it isn’t. A separate family entry just off the kitchen was created by general contractor Mike Khudir of Century West Construction. From the hall, the eye is drawn to the green oasis outside. The kids are either outdoors or on the plush sectional in the sunny family room, a favorite gathering area. Palevsky assembled it with just a few key pieces in a clean palette like the rest of the home, calibrating it to suit a hip couple and a modern family that happens to live in a stately residence. “I’m comfortable with the role of being the editor and curator of the house, helping create their vision. Everyone has great ideas, pulling them out is the hardest part—it’s about not incorporating every good idea you’ve ever had into one space,” the designer says, turning to the wife. “She tells me a story, I help illustrate it and then we do our thing and we transform it and then she and her family live it.”

Designer Alison Palevsky placed a Lindsey Adelman fixture in the entry of this Los Angeles house. The move declares this will not be a traditional manor home. A view to the living room reveals two Milo Baughman swivel chairs reupholstered in a Glant fabric from Kneedler-Fauchère poised beneath an Adam Henry work.

While the interiors were revamped to fit contemporary needs, the exterior still “needed to feel somewhat traditional,” shares Palevsky. “We used a palette of mostly white and green for plantings, leaving out any bold colors purposefully. The backyard was cleared and the hardscape was squared off to create an expansive lawn.” The central seating area is furnished with pieces by Janus et Cie.

L
os Angeles-based artist Ali Silverstein is often described as a painter, but such precise categorization ignores the broad sweep of her creativity. It’s far better to explain her multifaceted creations by describing her continuous process of painting, cutting and layering canvas—a means of grappling with big ideas humans have pondered for ages, impermanence and separateness chief among them. “There is a gap between our desire to know or understand everything and the limited perspective that we have,” she explains. “When confronted with the frustration or mystery of that gap, my response is to propose creative possibilities. Not to search for the answer, but to experiment with and appreciate all of the beautiful forms that possible answers can take.” Each of Silverstein’s works begins with what she calls a “motivating curiosity” that she documents and explores using media ranging from paint and pencil to photography, film and the written word. Then, in her sunlit studio, Silverstein begins the improvisational process of transforming that visual data. “I edit, cut up, pile, collect, erase, categorize and interact. I put things side by side; I create relationships,” she says. Layering has always been at the heart of Silverstein’s approach, from the hanging fringes that partially obscure her collaged canvases to the translucent washes of color that comprise her commissioned portraits. But in her latest work, things are starting to expand out from the walls. “More and more I feel like it’s the whole room I’m dealing with,” she says. For her most recent series, Silverstein made rubbings on canvas of the remains of a British trawler that had washed up on an Icelandic beach, then spent a year transforming those fragments into a variety of forms: massive paintings, charred wood sculptures and even a video piece for an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson. To create her paintings and installations—which also appear in gallery exhibitions and private collections—Silverstein employs unconventional gestures and tools: Using brooms and longhandled brushes, she sweeps color across canvases laid flat on the floor or mounted on a wall, dragging the in-process works up and down ladders, from floor to wall and back again. Some remain whole, while others she cuts into smaller shapes that are later stacked, shuffled, glued onto other canvases, painted over and pulled off again. Silverstein views her process as a continuum of action and response, arrangement and rearrangement, with a “finished” work being a snapshot of a point in time during this process. In other words, “if things stay around my studio, they will usually be acted upon—cut, glued, layered, rearranged,” she says. “I allow that constant shifting, and I think that’s almost the point.”

Sunlight pours into the great room of a Newport Beach residence by architect Eric Olsen. Atop flooring from Warren Christopher, a Cisco Brothers sectional rests on a vintage rug. A
Newport Beach couple with two growing children were at a crossroads: build a larger home or stay put in their current residence. In the end, the choice was easy. “We really liked the new lot—location, view, street—so we knew we eventually wanted to move there,” says the husband, adding, “We really like projects, and it was the perfect location for one.” The decision delighted Eric Olsen, the architect they engaged. “A corner lot is definitely what an architect desires, because it allows a little more space and freedom in the design,” he says. Olsen began by drafting the interior floor plan cued by the owners’ requests. “We wanted it to be open yet connected,” the husband says. “We wanted living to be downstairs and sleeping to be upstairs.” To ensure their house wouldn’t lose the intimacy of a smaller residence, the architect suggested a U-shaped structure. A two-story massing on the right positions the bedrooms above and utilitarian spaces below. A great room in the middle connects to the kitchen, and a guest suite wraps around the left side. When it came to the exterior elevation, “Eric nailed it right away,” the wife recalls. “We both really loved it from the get-go.” Texas limestone, black vertical wood siding and stucco intersect for a farmhouse look that leans more current than rustic. A flat, dark paint ties everything together. “The understated finish takes on a dramatic look in contrast to the stone,” says general contractor Matt McClure. Echoing the blocks of materials, landscape designer Chris Fenmore focused on texture, such as a grove of lavender and Westringia set against the dark siding, and grasses that create a meadow feel. At the front, six steps climb to a gate of reclaimed wood that opens to an inner courtyard. “I wanted to have a little relief off the street,” Olsen explains. “That gives you a bit of a transition and a journey to the front door.” Light filters through an allée of four large olive trees, where Fenmore introduced boxwood globes, a salvaged fountain and cascading rosemary. “When you walk through the courtyard, it’s a very transformative experience,” she says.

Designer Julie Hovnanian covered the ottomans with a vintage rug and grounded the space with a cowhide one. “I like to do the big pieces in a more neutral palette and layer with textures and textiles to give it a uniqueness,” says Hovnanian.

“It’s really a foliage-based garden,” Fenmore says of her plan. In the courtyard, accessed through a reclaimed-wood gate, she created blocks of texture, using plantings such as boxwood, miscanthus, feather grass and rosemary. The fountain is a salvaged piece. “We custom made the spout,” she notes.
A wood walkway leads through the courtyard to a trio of French doors that open on to the great room. Opposite, sunlight—and stunning bay views—pours in through windows and glass doors that connect the interior to the exterior. Trusses span the ceiling, and the kitchen is framed by timber posts. Here and throughout, Olsen incorporated light woods and floors with white walls grounded by darker elements, such as stained tower cabinets and ironwork details. The exterior’s limestone reappears on the great room’s fireplace, and the dark paint of the exterior siding shows up in the nearby office. Olsen weighed in on interior details as well, helping the couple select elements such as door handles, light fixtures and tiles—making designer Julie Hovnanian’s job rather easy, she admits. “Eric has a vision he takes all the way through,” she says. “His vibe is very natural and organic, and the palette we picked complements that.” Furnishings in offwhites, tones of linen, and grays that run from mist to charcoal allow architectural features like millwork to shine. Within the neutral color scheme, Hovnanian introduced varied textures for interest. Wood-framed leather chairs in the great room pair with a linen sectional and a rattan armchair, while the rustic dining table is surrounded by both a bench and woven leather chairs. The couple was mindful of investing in long-lasting pieces, which the designer enhanced with durable materials. The kitchen’s gray built-in seat has a nubby fabric, the playroom sofa is upholstered in an indooroutdoor textile, and the daughter’s blush-colored bedroom features a sophisticated velvet bed. Juxtaposing new and old features, the designer brought in the clients’ family history through items such as the couple’s bedroom nightstands and dressers, once owned by the wife’s maternal grandfather. Chairs from her childhood are in the playroom, where family photographs taken by the husband decorate the walls. And vintage pillows and textiles throughout add subtle color. Hovnanian covered the master bedroom’s headboard in a suzani fabric and sourced only antique rugs, a unique feature in every room. “It’s a very warm, inviting family home,” she says. Inside and out, the home is meant to support the family’s growth over the years. And just as its varied materials harmonize for a beautiful outcome, the clients and professionals alike left the project with a sense of cohesiveness. “It’s fun designing for people who really enjoy the details and the process,” Olsen says. “And it’s so easy when you have a team that is all about creating a great product.”

Below: A vintage rug adds a dose of color to the master bathroom. As a unique feature, general contractor Matt McClure installed the sink valves on the side of the vanity. “That was the first time I had done that, and now I’ve got several on projects,” he says. “It has become a popular feature.”

native Angeleno with a knack for real estate had plenty of choices when he went looking for a new family home in the city. He could have gone for something modern or even quite palatial, instead, he fell for a 1950s house on a kid-friendly street and decided to renovate. “He said, ‘I have this house in the Palisades and I’m not tearing it down,’ ” recalls designer Parrish Cameron Robe Chilcoat of her first client meeting. “He wanted to save its charm.” He also wanted to create a comfortable landing pad for his children, something the designer well understood. “I’m a single mom with two kids. I like being in a house where I can hear and feel my family around me,” she says. “He didn’t want a big, rambling house. He wanted to feel enveloped.” To rework the interior layout to better suit his family’s needs, the homeowner brought on residential designer and family friend Courtenay Choate Moritz—who also handled the landscape design—and general contractor Greg Shain. “It’s a jewel box,” says Choate Moritz of the home. “We wanted an open flow but a traditional vernacular, all without changing the footprint of the original house,” she continues, explaining that they added a small bonus room, bringing the house up to just over 3,000 square feet. “The client gave us free reign, but we met all the time,” adds the residential designer, who worked on the project with her partner, architect Doug Lindfors. She proposed lifting the great room master bedroom’s ceiling for an airy feel and in concert with the team, conceived alcove beds for the children that, with the curtains drawn, will create a perfect “teenage lair,” she says. “He wanted something different for his kids, something he knew they could grow with.” Those considerations—the needs of his children—were paramount to the redesign but it was also a chance

for the homeowner to explore his creative side and to develop his art collection, which now includes works by Edgar O. Kiechle and Kort Havens. “He wanted a warm, manageable home for when the kids are with him but also sophisticated interiors for when he’s solo,” says Chilcoat, who was happy to incorporate many of her client’s family heirlooms. “I grew up with antiques, too, and I understand how important sentimentality is.” (Chilcoat, it’s worth noting, is the step-great-granddaughter of Eleanor Brown, founder of the legendary New York design firm McMillen.) And while recent design trends have veered away from “brown furniture,” as it’s disdainfully called, Chilcoat is eager for its return. “There’s always a home for antiques as far as I’m concerned. There’s nothing more exciting than a modern backdrop with antique pieces,” she says. “Families who have antiques are lucky! It’s important to honor your history.” Of the pieces she chose from her client’s family collection, “all were restrained and had a beautiful patina.” The result is “quiet, restful and classy,” she says of pairing the pieces with a masculine palette of blues and grays. To create a sense of unity throughout the house, Chilcoat “treated it as one space,” she explains. “The colors needed to flow into each other, from one room to the next.” Blues and grays start in the entry and run through all the main living areas. “Originally, we chose a light color for the kitchen but it was the owner’s idea to try a darker gray. It totally made a difference.” For the master bedroom, Chilcoat shifted to softer neutral tones. A touch of green—a lichen-hued velvet armchair—was inspired by the garden views. Outdoor spaces received attention too. Before Choate Moritz’s interventions, the backyard was “like a jungle,” recalls the residential designer, who tidied up the space with a stone patio, a lawn and a pool. She kept the focus on plantings that require little effort and sourced 50-year-old olive trees from a decommissioned orchard in Visalia. “In Los Angeles, gardens are an extension of your living areas, so we were always mindful of cohesion, that the garden and house relate to each other stylistically,” she says. They also carved out additional play space by enclosing the front courtyard and choosing a Dutch door to make kid supervision a snap. “A new stage of life is what this home is all about,” Chilcoat observes. “We didn’t want to take it too seriously, and we wanted everyone to be happy.” The result is a house that surely would make the original owners proud, and it keeps the integrity of the neighborhood. “We brought the old house up to contemporary use and respected the architecture. You don’t have to make something enormous,” says Choate Moritz. Adds Chilcoat: “Our client respected the land, the home and the town. He’s just made it a better place.”

In the dining room, family antiques like the sideboard and chair played a key role in designer Parrish Cameron Robe Chilcoat’s take on her client’s home in Pacific Palisades. “I thought the lines were beautiful on the pieces he had,” she says.
