EDITOR’S LETTER
This issue is largely dedicated to homegrown design and to the independent makers and companies who are dialing into the made-in-America movement. To be sure, we live in a time where there are no clear-cut guidelines in design (perhaps there never were). Thanks to globalization, social media and the flood of visuals that pass our eyes daily, the sartorial choices we make for our homes are broad and vast, as they should be. Yet there is no denying the underlying current of old-school craftsmanship permeating the landscape. Call it “Americana Chic.” Stamp it “Made in America.” Today, homeowners are embracing all things artisanal, authentic and local. They want to know where the objects being brought into their homes are made and by whom. Makers in cities across the country (who we happily uncover in every issue of Luxe) are responding with thoughtfully crafted forms and materials that appeal to the new sensibility. Ultimately, of course, 21st-century design is a mix; a multicultural mash-up of ideas, with, perhaps, a pinch of Florence, a dose of Athens and, for good measure, a smattering of Detroit.

LAURA MAUK
Writer / Washington, D.C. What made you want to become a writer? Curiosity. I love finding out why individuals think the way they do. I also enjoy stringing words together in what I hope is a painterly way that gives people understanding or lets them see something differently. If I could interview anyone, it would be… Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frank Lloyd Wright or Donald Judd. They were all revolutionaries with such unique visions and strong characters. Each of them led an interesting life, making iconic art and architecture in authentic and thoughtful ways. Is there anything intriguing you currently in the world of design? I love the way design continues to connect to nature with lots of glass, sunlight and simple, organic materials. Form and texture have evolved and, as a result, I feel that buildings and furniture today are much more dynamic. Photographer / New York
If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? I would love to have the opportunity to experience, and also photograph, James Turrell’s Roden Crater in Arizona. His work is all about light, space and how we as viewers perceive our surroundings. Most memorable Luxe assignment: A Hamptons house with the talented Jennifer Post. Light is a critical feature for every architectural or interiors shoot and, in this case, the changing weather conditions worked perfectly throughout our day—cloudy or sunny when we needed it! What type of architecture inspires you? Truly bespoke structures that elegantly solve problems and create energetic, livable spaces. I’ve had a longtime collaboration with architect Ali Tayar, and the houses he has designed—from Rhode Island to Beirut—embody this approach with refinement and finesse. Documenting these environments is both challenging and invigorating.

JOE FLETCHER
Photographer / San Francisco Biggest influences: Creatives in the worlds of art, photography and film, especially the work of Edward Burtynsky, Robert Polidori, Thomas Demand and Jeff Wall. Most exciting thing happening in design today: The amount of design that’s shared worldwide via social media. What type of architecture do you find most impactful? Quiet, minimalistic architecture—designs that let nature do the talking. If I could splurge on anything… It would be on a trip to Greece for my family so we can enjoy the turquoise sea and fried cheeses in the shade. Or a piece by Thomas Demand.
LINDA HAYES
Writer / Colorado Favorite Luxe interview: It was for a home on Vancouver Island. On an early meeting with the architect, Brian Hemingway, the owner of the house watched him take out a pen and just start drawing; he told me that observing him was such a magical part of the process. The image that conjured up has always stuck with me. My biggest design influence comes from… The process of architecture and its ability to transform the simplest idea into an elegant, functional structure. It reminds me that creativity is about both the journey and the destination. Who is the most fascinating person you’ve ever met? Charles Smith, owner of Charles Smith Wines in Walla Walla, Washington. He’s a bigger-thanlife personality, an intuitive thinker and a brilliant marketer. He led the recent design of his new Seattle winery, as well as the restoration of his midcentury house, with local architect Tom Kundig. Impressive!

RADAR WITH THE DEMAND UP FOR LOCALLY CRAFTED FURNISHINGS, FITTINGS AND DÉCOR, AMERICAN ARTISANS AND CRAFTSMEN ARE ANSWERING THE CALL.

or American furniture production, the yen for substantive, enduring quality— something commonplace only decades ago—has certainly reached a fever pitch in a day where genuineness in products is all but profuse. This nostalgic zeitgeist is ushering in a new wave of makers from various disciplines and perspectives, each bound by the desire to create in unique, original ways. “Design is the key,” says Sara Ossana of Warren, Rhode Island-based O&G Studio. “We’ve tapped into the idea that good design could save the continuity of craftsmanship.” Artist and furniture craftsman Ian Stell of New York City, known
LXCOM_Radar_Made_In_America_107.indd 108
for his highly unorthodox, mesmerizingly sculptural pieces, simply calls this widespread craving for authenticity an “American design renaissance.” “There’s a competition that has been intensifying,” he says, “and it’s pushing both quality and originality.” But what is American furniture design today? According to Brooklyn-based designer Asher Israelow, it is not bound by a style but rather an ethos. “There is no aesthetic correlation,” he says, “but it is aspirational; it’s forward-thinking. It’s reinventing the wheel. American designers are not necessarily bogged down by traditional craft techniques and apprenticeships that perhaps
our European counterparts are.” Israelow was studying architecture in school when on a whim, he took up woodworking while completing his thesis. “I’m entirely self-taught with wood. It became an obsessive hobby,” he says. Instead of becoming an architect, Israelow shifted gears to furniture because he believed it would provide more creative license. It is a circuitous route to furniture production that many young designers echo. Los Angeles-based Sabin Ousey was working in sales at Lawson-Fenning when he began making furniture for his own apartment as a creative outlet, prompting him to open his own company last January. His collection pays

homage to various viewpoints, from Paul McCobb to Spanish Colonial motifs. “America, particularly California, lacks centuries of history, so it gives us an opportunity to forge a new aesthetic,” says Ousey. “Rather than copying tradition, we are playing with historic motifs. That is how new genres and trends emerge.” New York interior designer Eddie Lee finds an egalitarian quality in today’s design scene. “Furniture makers are coming from all different backgrounds these days,” he says. “That’s a very American concept.” Stephen Antonson, the Brooklyn plaster master who references Giacometti and Gio Ponti in his sculptural line of work, thinks there is something
LXCOM_Radar_Made_In_America_107.indd 109
to this “design first” ingenuity that separates the successful American designer. “You can go to the design shows and say, ‘oh, there’s the guy that studied woodworking in school: he’s made the most amazing dovetail you’ve ever seen,’ but it’s rather uninspired design-wise,” he says. Like Israelow and Ousey, Antonson never studied plaster or furniture making in school. “I think there’s a streak of naiveté that allows good designers to do weird things, to be open to doing something backward. That’s where innovation happens. You’re not trying to make this boring, perfect thing that is like all the other boring, perfect things.” Ty Best of Chicago’s Caste Design,

None of this is to say that design traditions do not inform the current American furniture marketplace. Stickley, the pioneer of Mission and American Arts and Crafts furniture, has been around for over a century and has changed hands only once—from the original Stickley family to the Audi family in 1974—all the while employing their original, traditional woodworking techniques. That is not to say that the Manlius, New York-based company hasn’t propelled forward with every generation; Aminy Audi, the CEO of Stickley, credits this to the company’s diversification and a resistance to laurelresting. “We’ve added many different styles, from updated traditional to midcentury modern collections,” she says, adding, however, that it is the education of the consumer that matters most.

From the mind of interior designer Brad Ford, Field + Supply is a yearly modern makers craft fair in High Falls, New York; the U bench by Luur Studio, sold through The Future Perfect, is an example of what’s in store for fair goers. A peek at Israelow’s process.

who formerly had a life and career in the fashion industry, also echoes the sentiment: “It sounds sort of Pollyanna, but I never knew about the possibilities of what could go wrong; I went into it head first without any hesitation.” Best’s refined, hand-hewn pieces, often in weighty materials like bronze and marble, are nationally distributed by Holly Hunt. He finds the isolation of rural Montana instead of community hotbeds like Brooklyn or Los Angeles to be the best source of unfiltered inspiration. “I think if I had more contemporaries opining on my designs, my work wouldn’t be so avant-garde,” he says.
1/21/16 6:04 PM
“When people understand the work and quality behind one of these pieces, they realize it is a lifetime investment. It is something they can pass on to a future generation.” O&G Studio is a contemporary example of modernizing a deeply ingrained American motif—the Windsor chair, whose roots stem from our earliest English colonists. Ossana and partner Jonathan Glatt electrify the genre with unexpected colors and proportions. “It’s something intrinsic to the American design community,” Ossana says, “our history allows us to question authority.” New York-based interior designer Brad Ford, who has become a kind of pied piper for independent craftsmanship, says, “The U.S. has become one of the most dynamic places for burgeoning design talent.” Last October, Ford held his second-annual Field + Supply fair in High Falls, New York. “Growing up in a small town in Arkansas and being a creative kid, I always loved going to the arts and crafts fairs,” he says. “It created a sense of community that is now so often lacking.” Ford decided to take this concept and elevate it by cherry-picking some of the best American designers across various disciplines, like Israelow, Apparatus and The Future Perfect. “With Field + Supply, we want the work to be serious but the experience to be anything but,” he says, adding, “It is important that design not be alienating. Consumers are more and more responding to the meaning and soul of something that is made by hand. It automatically separates itself from other mass-produced furnishings.” Ford is so confident in the shifting consumer paradigm that this fall, he opened Fair, a showroom at the New York Design Center highlighting elevated craft and design, representing many of the American designers he curated for Field + Supply. No matter the aesthetic, whether historically referential or avant-garde, the independent American furniture maker offers a quality that an outsourced big-box manufacturer simply can’t. “My clients want to understand and know the object that they have a personal relationship with; our local makers give us that,” says interior designer Celerie Kemble, who is deeply involved in keeping artisan traditions afloat—particularly with The Alpha Workshops, the nation’s only nonprofit organization providing creative HIV-positive individuals with industry-specific training and employment in the decorative arts. “People are increasingly caring about these pieces that they live with. Furniture is a very intimate thing, and so, too, should be the process.”
LXCOM_Radar_Made_In_America_107.indd 112
From top: Each of Stephen Antonson’s plaster creations, like the Angele chandelier and Macklin center table, is crafted by hand in his Brooklyn studio. Century Furniture’s Thompson chest by designer Thomas O’Brien is fabricated in Hickory, North Carolina. INFORMED BY HIS VORACIOUS APPETITE FOR TRAVEL, JIUN HO’S SCULPTURAL LINE OF FURNITURE CELEBRATES AN ANNIVERSARY.
Above: In his San Francisco studio, designer Jiun Ho stands near one of his No More Play tables, part of the Jiun Ho Collection V line and inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture of the same name.
For Jiun Ho, the San Francisco designer behind the furniture collection that bears his name, it all comes down to narrative. “I want to tell a story,” he says of the line, now celebrating its 15th anniversary. More often than not, the stories stem from his travels (he spends at least three months a year traveling the world, with recent stops in Kyoto and Sicily). “I take a lot of pictures to remind me of my experiences,” he notes. “There are times when I look at things and say ‘that could be a base for a dining table’ and there are times when I have to look at the photo, take a step back and create from there.” He points to the Maras chair in his newly introduced Jiun Ho Collection V as an example. “If you look at the lines of the chair and the stonework found at Machu Picchu and Sacsahuamán in Peru, you can see where the inspiration comes from.” The rest of the 16-piece collection similarly draws on Ho’s wide-ranging travels and experiences, as well as weaves together the narrative threads of previous introductions and makes graceful allusions to modern art. When first launching his business, though, the designer’s primary objective was not building a furniture brand, but rather to create unique spaces and user-friendly experiences. Then a client asked him if he would sketch some furniture. “I said, ‘Sure, I can give it a try,’ ” he recalls. “I came up with 35-40 pieces.” Connecting with a factory based in Southern California, Ho began manufacturing the pieces (most of which have been made in the United States ever since) and a brand was born. As the company has evolved, so has Ho’s approach. “We create the trends; we don’t let them drive us,” he says. “We focus on timeless, elegant shapes and forms and emphasize the tranquility, balance and pureness of the pieces. That, and attention to detail, is what’s important to us.”

HISTORY REPEATING AN ICONIC AMERICAN ESTATE SERVES AS A MUSE FOR WILDWOOD LAMPS & ACCENTS’ LATEST COMPENDIUM OF LIGHTING.
ARCHITECTURAL ANTIQUES: COURTESY AUTHENTIC PROVENCE.
WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAUDIA URIBE
Steeped in rich, historical references, the Biltmore Estate has been inspiring design and architecture since its reveal in 1895 by George Washington Vanderbilt II, grandson of famed industrialist and philanthropist Cornelius Vanderbilt. The 250-room French Renaissance château set upon 8,000 acres of pristine Ashville, North Carolina, land was designed as a country retreat for the family and remained so well into the 20th century. With certainly no shortage of inspiration to draw from—the house itself features over 100,000 square feet comprised of 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces— the artisanal team behind Wildwood Lamps & Accents turned to the estate as a muse for their most recent collection, receiving unparalleled access to the pieces that made this sprawling house a home. One such piece uncovered during the brand’s creative pursuit was an ancient cinnabar box belonging to George’s wife, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser Vanderbilt. Quickly recognizing the potential in the raised floral relief etching, the Wildwood team developed big plans for the motif: Aptly named after the lady of the house, the resulting Edith lamps (shown) are conveyed in three colorways that each take on a different persona. The Edith lamp in Red, for instance, reflects a traditional Asian-like feel, while the Powder Blue hue professes a more serene garden-esque vibe; Oyster proves to be the chameleon of the group, able to live in both modern and traditional environments. All flaunting brushed finishes, modern silhouettes and sleek drum shades, this versatile collection effusively transcends aesthetics, genres and eras—taking its place as a graceful classic with a firm foothold in today’s interiors.

ATHENS, GEORGIA-BASED CREATOR SUSAN HABLE LENDS HER DESIGN TALENT AND ARTISTIC VISION TO A CHIC NEW HOME COLLECTION. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LACY MORRIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS BRANTLEY/WHITE ORANGE PRODUCTIONS
You are involved in a little bit of everything—painting, textiles, furniture, interiors. What led you to where you are today? I’ve always been an artist, and after working for several small businesses, mostly in jewelry, I realized that it was time to start my own design company. My sister, Katharine Hable Sweeney, and I launched Hable Construction in New York City in 1999, but in 2009, I decided to make the move to Athens. This was an eye-opening experience in that I realized how productive having my own studio was for my art. Describe your design aesthetic. I don’t play by the rules and I don’t discriminate where I turn to for inspiration—one day it’s Egyptian metalwork and the next it’s a Japanese kimono. I look to different cultures for inspiration in my color palettes and patterns. Tell us about your relationship with Hickory Chair. We started working together about six years ago on an exclusive fabric collection, and we’ve grown from there. Our common goals were to create quality products and make as many pieces domestically as possible. Why do you think it’s so important to keep production stateside? It is crucial for me to see the furniture being prototyped with my eyes on the product, and I work with the designers and engineers to make sure that all of the details that make the pieces special are being executed as they should. It’s such a luxury to see the hands that go into making each piece of our collection. We love the blue mirrored console for Hickory Chair’s sister company, La Barge (shown). It’s part of 25 new pieces we are adding to the original collection for the brand, and it is made with gilded wood and blue glass. I had seen that blue shade in a few midcentury pieces, but nothing current; we searched all over until we finally tracked it down abroad. I’m crazy about simple design that is also chic, and I think this geometric piece fits the bill and would be fantastic in a foyer. What’s next? An additional collection for Hickory Chair will come later this year. The pieces are incredible, with a lot of new silhouettes, and our focus continues to be on the sculptural aspect of each design. Visually, the new collection will tell a more transitional, modern story. Incorporating an artistic approach to design, I work hard to let the tiniest of details speak for the entire product.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL LEGEND AND DESIGN AFICIONADO LENNY KRAVITZ TEAMS UP WITH THE SKILLED CRAFTSMEN AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN HARDWARE TO CREATE A HARMONIOUS COLLECTION THAT HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS

Why hardware? I was attracted to the partnership with Rocky Mountain Hardware because of the high-quality products they produce—handcrafted hardware made with time-honored casting methods. It was a pleasure to work with all of the talented artisans that created these pieces. What was it about Beverly Hills’ Trousdale Estates that inspired you? I moved to Los Angeles when I was 11 years old and it was then that I was first exposed to midcentury modern design. The Trousdale area boasts amazing midcentury architecture created by such a diverse group of architects. What I loved about these
homes in contrast to the boxy apartments that I was accustomed to in New York was that they had clean lines, open floor plans and, in a lot of cases, an abundance of glass. They were like the glamorous homes I had seen in Hollywood movies. And this collection represents that. Tell us more about the artistry and techniques. At Rocky Mountain, they still cast and finish each piece by hand, which is so impressive; they really bring to life this high level of artistry. With Trousdale, we wanted to generate products that married that craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. The texture came out of wanting a more tactile experience with each piece, as well as serves as a way to visually emphasize the handcrafted nature. Give us a peek at your creative process. It’s a combination of sketching, looking at historical references and listening to music. “Hollywood Swinging” by Kool & the Gang was definitely inspirational in making this line. Finishes can truly transform a piece—taking something from traditional to totally rock and roll. Take us through the finishes. Trousdale will be offered in all of the Rocky Mountain finishes. Personally, I will be using the bronze light finish on a home I’m building in the Bahamas.

Lenny Kravitz has made no efforts to conceal his passion for interiors—establishing New Yorkbased Kravitz Design and producing several successful product lines. His latest collaboration with Rocky Mountain Hardware is yet another notch on his already-impressive design belt. In tune with both the artist’s modern aesthetic and love for classic design, the Rocky Mountain brand was more than prepared to bring Kravitz’s ideas to life. The resulting Trousdale collection combines a powerful ensemble of textures and shapes that culminates in a truly harmonious and showstopping array of hardware. We sat down with Kravitz as he discussed his latest collection.

@arkiromantix_denver WHO: Ashley Engler is no stranger to Instagram’s collaborative potential. She serves as moderator for Denver’s chapter of Arkiromantix, a community of architecture lovers with a flair for the dramatic. WHAT: Followers can expect to see stark angles, riveting patterns and vibrant colors celebrating all things structural. Engler uses targeted hashtags to expand her photographer network and find new buildings and viewpoints to feature.
“212 Gallery is my go-to in Aspen; I stop in for all of my projects. There’s a great, diverse menagerie of work from cool and up-and-coming artists—everything from graffiti and contemporary art to sculpture. I also make a point to attend the UC Boulder graduation art show each year. You can find the most amazing artwork through the students selling their pieces.”
“Larry Stone at The Scarab is a great source. Larry not only has the best products in town, but also an extensive knowledge of rug history, origin and options. Each year, his team travels abroad to hand-select the rugs in their extensive showroom. They can also source rugs from all over the country to meet specific needs. And the incredible customer service keeps you coming back!
“Peter Eggers owns Woden Woods in Denver, an as-custom-as-it-gets cabinet-and-furnituremaking company. Peter allows me to run with my creative whims and then delivers beyond my expectations. Recently, while designing a kitchen, I couldn’t find a wood species with the perfect color, so the guys at Woden Woods bleached a darker wood and created a wonderful one-of-a-kind hue for me.”
-KARI WHITMAN
-BETH SLIFER
-NANCY SANFORD
WHY: Arkiromantix’s appeal lies in its alluring simplicity and never-ending perspective shifts. Stripped of the typical distracting bustle of an urban environment, the feed offers design enthusiasts a chance to get back to good, old-fashioned architecture appreciation. IN HER OWN WORDS: “I’d describe my aesthetic as clean and minimal. I have a hard time functioning in a cluttered space. Whether the shot features an interior or exterior, minimal rules all for me. Color is also a huge component for me. My palette tends to range from bright turquoise to soft pastels. I recently painted the front door of my house Tiffany blue and I love it!”
The lure of textiles and fashion: Textiles are considered the first form of language, and that fascinates me. Also, you can tell a lot about someone by the way they dress and, by the same token, you can tell people a lot about yourself by how you dress. You create your own identity every day, which is fun! Having a moment in fashion: For spring/summer 2016, everybody is talking about the brand Vetements and Alessandro Michele, the creative director of Gucci. There is also Simon Porte Jacquemus, who is a very intriguing young designer in Paris. Plus, I love following brands on the rise like Rodarte, Hood by Air and Proenza Schouler. My dream acquisition for the museum would be… To acquire pieces by American designer Claire McCardell, who was very important in the 1950s. She was inventive with shapes, and she linked couture and sportswear. You could compare her to Balenciaga.
Can’t get enough of… Modernist, midcentury American architecture, as well as such architects as Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Albert Frey. It’s my dream to live in one of their houses some day. Happening in art: Exhibitions on drawing are a big trend in the art world right now. Drawings were not always deemed as important; now, they’re considered pretty major. They’re intimate and convey things about an artist’s creative process. In fashion, drawings and sketches are obviously very important. Denver to-do list: I am so excited to revisit the Denver Botanic Gardens. The presentation, landscaping and themes are all wonderful. I am also looking forward to seeing more documentaries, as well as independent and avant-garde films at the Esquire Theatre. It seems to be one of Denver’s best-kept secrets!

DATE BOOK SHANE BROWN
Shane Brown of Georgia Brown Home is a curator by nature, so it’s no surprise that we would want his inside look at the best parts of Georgia Brown’s hometown of Aspen. “The beauty of Aspen is that the energy is always upbeat and never stagnant,” he explains. “Fresh snow, new soirees… there are so many social and educational things to do.” And “fresh” certainly describes Brown’s approach to décor. Together with his wife, Kristine— whom he met while antiquing—Brown thrives on making the old new again, transforming everything from drainpipes to bridge trusses into unique statement furniture. When he does take a break from designing, Brown recommends the following Aspen itinerary. bdantiques.com
10 a.m. Relax with a gorgeous view and great brunch options at Bonnie’s on the mountain. It’s also an easy walk from the impeccably decorated Sky Hotel, which is definitely worth a visit. 12 p.m. Enjoy the top-notch shopping spots on Galena Street (including Georgia Brown, of course). The Ralph Lauren store, in particular, is really cool and operated by nice people. I also love the quintessentially Aspen feel of Kemo Sabe, the cowboy store, where you can enjoy a beer and some fun music while trying on a hat or boots. 2 p.m. Don’t miss a late lunch at the White House Tavern. We always order the same thing: the
chef’s absolutely delicious take on the French dip sandwich. 3 p.m. Over to Alderfer’s Antiques to see Joni—a wonderful woman who has owned and operated this fun-and-funky shop for 30 years. My wife also loves to go to Susie’s Limited over on Main Street for quality consignment finds. 6 p.m. Head to Justice Snow’s in the historic Wheeler Opera House building for a great burger and sweet potato fries, or mix it up and try the sea bass at Jimmy’s. 8 p.m. Catch a movie at the Isis Theater, a really charming vintage building. If you’re there a bit before showtime, you can always grab a quick drink down the street at Caribou Club or Cache Cache.
PHOTOS: CINESCOPE CREATIVE.
9 a.m. Stop in at Poppycock’s, a great little breakfast joint, for coffee and maybe one of its always-tempting pancakes.
10 p.m. Head home and get ready to do it all over again the next day. It never gets old!

NICOLE HOLLIS, SAN FRANCISCO Trademark: I’m all about simplicity with an edge: black, texture, cut and form. Morning routine: Up at 5:30 a.m., I check online auctions, design blogs, The New York Times and email. Post bath and meditation, it’s family time with my husband and 4-year-old; no better way to start the day. Dream office: I surround myself with beautiful objects in my studio, but it’s constantly changing—the smallest thing can inspire. We have huge windows overlooking the San Francisco skyline, and the sunsets are spectacular. Desktop items: My tools of the trade (color pencils, scratch paper and drawings), a rusty horseshoe, brass door hardware and a rock from a trip to Hawaii. Personal stationery: Custom letterpress with original artwork by Marta Elise Johansen. Mood board: Torn pages from fashion and art magazines and auction catalogues. On trend: Eighties fashion is back and inspiring interiors. I’m hooked on neon, shredded and studded accents.

Displaying restraint… Kara Mann’s benches are cool and current yet also possess a timelessness to them that isn’t over-designed. The main lines of the piece… Are defined in solid black, providing a frame to emphasize the natural wood grain of the base; from a creative perspective I think it’s brilliant and beautiful. The attention to detail and beautiful finishing… Is an example of Baker’s trademark of uncompromising standards towards well-made furnishings. Luxury is a by-product of superior quality and sophisticated design. I always examine… Circulation, scale and the language spoken between pieces when creating areas conducive to conversation. Kara has done a wonderful job… Designing a versatile, clean, perfectly proportioned line, and I am excited to use her pieces in our clients’ spaces.

I find this collection to be… Confident, playful and feminine. It has a timeless Hepburn-like quality without alienating those who lean toward masculine design. I’m at my creative best when… I am pushing the boundaries, and Kate Spade’s new furniture line does just that, apparent in the bow tie back detailing—a distinct motif of the company reinterpreted for an instant-classic dining chair. I am attracted to the bold… Example of Kate Spade’s ability to marry two of their most signature elements together: bows and polka-dots. The chairs embody… The brand’s embrace on the interiors world, displaying both formality and playfulness alongside masculine and feminine notes. The sweep of the legs is very distinctive… And the black-and-white polka-dot pattern speaks to confidence and individuality.

Fashion, design, art and architecture… Are all variations on a creative theme. Some of the best furnishing collections are born from fashion icons, often causing a tidal wave of symbiotic brand revival. I absolutely love the Hooker-Rowley collaboration for that exact reason—an unexpected brand pairing that stops you in your tracks. The Fleur de Glee bench is… Unmistakably Rowley in pattern yet shows off the refined upholstery elements for which Hooker is known. Add in the modern lines and jewelrylike metalwork detailing and you’re poised for perfection. As a fluent Francophile… I love the name and inherent playfulness associated with the bench. Whimsical upholstery meets modern metal—it’s the juxtaposition that makes us stop and ponder. Interiors should not exist on a single axis… But reflect the many moods and facets of personalities. Without creativity… Design becomes predictable and expected. Here, I’m so attracted to the hard, modern silhouette coupled with the floral, feminine pattern.

Every single thing… About the Morehead chair is for me. From its hefty, almost updated Parsons-style lines to its somewhat Postmodern personality and early 1980s appeal, it is as much a comfy spot to sit in as it is sculptural art. Silhouette is important… For the overall balance of a room and area of perspective. What’s interesting about these chairs is how strong and grounded their profiles are. Since they are so straight, they work beautifully with curved pieces, like say a Tulip table. Locally made forever pieces… Are what everyone is after these days. Hands down, these pieces are new and now, all while combining a classically architectural frame with a perhaps retro-style fabric choice that speaks to today’s lifestyle. The best way to describe my aesthetic… Is transitional with an edge, which fits to perfection with many of the pieces offered by Highland House. The lines are clean and draped in classicism, but the textiles are fit for modern-day tastes—the perfect mash-up of timeless and fresh.

OUTSIDE THE LINES COLOR REENERGIZES THE HOME’S MOST-FREQUENTED ROOMS FOR STUNNING SPACES THAT SHUN TRADITION AND DARE TO SHAKE THINGS UP. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA
Typically, when whipping up a confectionary masterpiece, you don’t want to break the mold; it’s a vital part of keeping those baked goods looking their best. But that’s where following form in the kitchen should end: The best kitchen design is equal parts functional and unexpected, which is why incorporating color is becoming such an important element for a truly remarkable space. So, while crisp white cabinetry in both the kitchen and bathroom isn’t going anywhere soon, mixing in bold hues—whether it’s on the island and appliances in the kitchen or in the form of a statement-making wallpaper in the powder bath—is fast becoming the not-so-secret ingredient to cooking up spaces that will stand the test of time. Here, we celebrate the color-happy palettes and products that are taking the workhorse rooms of the home from bland to beautiful.
HAUTE DISH TAYLOR BORSARI
Designer Taylor Borsari channels Morocco in a Coronado, California, kitchen that dazzles with heavy doses of color, pattern and glammed-out gold. taylorborsari.com Share your design vision. The house was a historic remodel, and the kitchen was a blank space aside from the blue La Cornue oven. My first goal was to integrate the color of the range so it felt like part of an overall story rather than a random dash of color. I think many are nervous to jump into a bold range choice, but this is proof that it can be done without being too overwhelming.
Best ways to introduce pattern into the kitchen? I love patterned backsplashes! This is an area where you can really set the tone for a kitchen, and it’s an obvious area you can have a lot of fun with. Even tonal or monochromatic patterns can add interest. In this kitchen, we also added the carved island, which gave us a nice, ethnic twist to help balance the backsplash, as well as the very colorful range.
COM_LX6_TheLook_KitchenBath_186-194.indd 192
How can color revive and freshen up a kitchen? Color is a great addition to everyday life. White is classic and timeless, of course, but it is also a very safe option. This kitchen is a bit of a hybrid of pattern and color, and I think it is so much more interesting as a result. Plus, as more spaces are openplan these days, embracing a little more color in kitchens allows you to connect rooms more cohesively.

BEAUTY Bringing color into the kitchen doesn’t have to mean looking to the rainbow for inspiration: quiet black matte can be just as impactful and statement-making, as demonstrated by the latest addition to Brizo’s high-fashion faucet line. Featuring a hidden pull-down wand, the Solna faucet makes a big impression with its articulating arm and fashion-forward finish. brizo.com
It’s no surprise that open shelving continues to be wildly popular in today’s kitchen, but for lovers of color, this modern design device is even more effective. Stacking brightly colored bowls, glasses, mugs and ceramics can infuse happy hues into the most neutral of kitchens, making it the perfect solution for homeowners who are looking to play it a little safer but still want to incorporate an element of fun and whimsy into their rooms. This vignette from designer Emily Henderson shows that there are no rules when it comes to styling your shelves; just don’t be shy to share your favorite pieces, regardless of color scheme or theme. stylebyemilyhenderson.com
FREE & CLEAR Snaidero’s newest introduction, Code, in collaboration with designer Michele Marcon, is challenging the kitchen’s status quo with its innovative paint-by-number system. It’s about as personal as you can get in the kitchen. snaidero-usa.com

Sconces from Galerie des Lampes and an art piece, Jay Hodgins’ Straumi 8, add an air of modern elegance to the room. The chair is custom by Anne Hepfer, upholstered in fabric from Kravet and trim from Samuel & Sons.
This serene vanity space by Toronto designer Anne Hepfer is transformed with color. Benjamin Moore’s Coventry Gray on the cabinetry acts as both statement-maker and pretty neutral against the softer walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Stonington Gray. “The cabinetry is tailored but feminine, with some round detailing to maintain traditional character but in a cleaner more current design,” explains Hepfer. Far from traditional, though, is what she sees as the next big thing in powerful palettes: “I have a feeling that gray is here to stay for a while, so we’re popping spaces with bold hits of color—fuchsia, canary yellow, teal—and, of course, black and white accents. I’m loving the play of contrast and unexpected combinations!” annehepfer.com

A CLOSER LOOK AT WHAT MAKES THE KITCHEN AND BATH SOME OF OUR FAVORITE ROOMS IN THE HOME. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA
MADE TO ORDER Kitchens and bathrooms spent the first part of their lives inside the home hidden away, separated from the pretty living and family rooms where all the action was happening. Today, though, the kitchen and bath are front and center, with gorgeous new options that transform the rooms into gallery-like spaces—with faucets that double as works of art, tiles that look like they belong in a museum, and lots of great new technology that ensures these spaces are as hardworking as they are good-looking. On the following pages, Luxe examines all the ways the kitchen and bath have been transformed for modern living.

MATERIAL MAGIC For this handsome Santa Monica, California, kitchen by architect May Sung, materials take center stage to great effect thanks to the wonderful grain and texture of the reclaimed wood on the island and perimeter cabinetry, which contrast powerfully with the limestone backsplash tiles from Walker Zanger. “We wanted to create an oasis that is masculine and bring in natural material, without looking like a lumberjack’s cabin,” says Sung. “All of the material had to be genuine and true to that vision.” gsubuda.com

SPLASH ZONE
A backsplash represents the founding principles of a kitchen: It should be both beautiful and functional. But, in the case of the New Ravenna tile backsplash in this kitchen by Los Angeles-based designer Kishani Perera, it goes one further: being totally statement-making. Luckily, the vast expanses of white on the cabinetry make it, and the warm, chevron-patterned wood flooring that accompanies it, visually stimulating but not overwhelming. kishaniperera.com

Touches of gold and brass are slowly taking the place of chrome and polished nickel in contemporary bathrooms, thanks to their easy warmth and timeless aesthetic. In this space by designer Casey Keasler, from the creative Portland studio of Casework, brass faucets from Kohler join mirrors—replicas of 1930s French wall consoles from RH—in creating a can’t-look-away sink area. The golden hues are the perfect complement to the cabinetry’s bold teal color. “The brass helped create a certain richness,” says Keasler. “I like a clean, quiet space where everything is done for a reason and not because of a trend.” casework.it

Today, the environmentally savvy and noteworthy luxury residential architect is based in Aspen, with projects throughout Colorado and the Western U.S. Her recent endeavors seek to find equilibrium between her design philosophy and energy conservation. “My philosophy is always that great design comes first, and great design is about blending the practical, energy-conscious solutions with the artistic in a creative solution that meets my clients’ needs and desires.”

INSIGHT FROM Blending the personal with practical, architect Cherie Goff brings a simplistically derived, solutiondriven approach to each endeavor. “I pride myself in taking complex criteria and distilling it into a spacious, livable design. Finding the simplest solution that addresses all of the criteria is the goal of every project,” shares the partner of acclaimed Boulder-based architecture and design firm HMH Architecture + Interiors. Goff, a Colorado native and LEED Green Associate, combines a love for the environment with a penchant for modern design to create sustainable, site-sensitive buildings with abundant natural light and connections to the outdoors. Other bedrocks of her work include clean lines, clear volumes and open plans that are often shaped by changes in the ceiling. “I have a passion for capturing a feeling of warmth and comfort,” she says. “A home is an extension of a family: both a retreat and sanctuary, a place to reconnect to each other as well as the natural environment.”

INSIGHT FROM “Make something that’s going to be a beautiful ruin,” enthuses Andi Korber, a Colorado architect whose thoughtful approach to creating and designing buildings begins and ends with enduring materials that “take care of themselves.” “I want to leave a shallow, careful mark,” she says. “The word ‘shelter’ is in our firm name for a reason (Land+Shelter). We’re giving wood, glass and stone a role in our lives—and that’s shelter.” As a principal of the noteworthy Aspen- and Carbondale-based architecture and planning firm, Korber reflects on the qualities she possesses that ultimately led her to her profession. “I was drawn to art, math and science since grade school. Architecture appealed to me as a blend of those passions,” she explains. “When I took my first design course in college, taught by the inspiring Varujan Boghosian, I fell in love with design.” Land+Shelter boasts an extensive portfolio of modern and traditionally inspired residences, remodels and equestrian properties.

INSIGHT FROM Juana Gómez of Lawrence and Gómez Architects considers her profession to be exciting because every client and design is unique, making her work feel fresh every day. “It is a privilege to be let into people’s lives in order to create spaces for them,” she shares. “Clients request new buildings or remodels to accommodate their changing situations. They need new, larger, smaller or different places that reflect a growing family, a change in physical ability, an older relative moving in or a new venture. It is exciting, as the architect, to be part of those journeys.” The Peruvian-born, Yale- and University of Coloradoeducated architect brings a simple, fresh and cleanlined aesthetic to Boulder, where her residential and commercial design firm is based. “My designs are characterized by clean, classic lines. Though my work encompasses many styles, I do a lot of low-pitched roofs that were popular in the midcentury,” she notes.

What would be your dream creative project? Working with a client who gives us the opportunity to create something they could not physically imagine but that exemplifies an emotional quality or sense of being that they desire. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? A beautiful, inspirational environment that is both uplifting and calming while being sustainable and timeless. It can be simple or highly detailed but captures an essence of Zen luxury. How do you define luxury? A luxurious space is one that makes you feel better, more inspired, more connected both physically and psychologically to the place and more emotionally connected to the people around you.
BERGLUND ARCHITECTS, LLC Fostering a love of architecture has been a lifelong passion for Hans Berglund, who spent his youth building tree forts and go-carts, sketching houses and crafting furniture. Eventually he even worked as a framer for a neighbor who built houses. This childhood passion of creating and building his original concepts became a dream come true when, after working for an Aspen-based firm for 10 years, Berglund founded Berglund Architects in 2004 in Edwards, Colorado, with a focus on designing high-end, modern mountain homes. True to a lifetime spent pursuing a passion, Berglund has built his firm on a philosophy of turning dreams into reality. “We create architecture based on the client’s aspirations and budget,” he says. “We ensure the design is rooted to its place, responds to the natural environment and merges with the landscape. Using a palette of regional, natural materials, we create buildings that are rich with color and texture, durable, intelligent, artful and highly crafted.” The architect defines success by the client’s response to their new home. “We strive to create architecture that has the power to positively affect life experiences, bring people together and put them more in touch with their surroundings,” he explains. “When a client says they feel more inspired and connected to their family when in their home, we know it has been a success.” The firm is also renowned for its ability to perfectly balance modernity and sustainability. “In all of our projects, we use natural materials and a very high level of craftsmanship inspired by the project’s regional building traditions,” Berglund says. “We act as stewards of the natural environment as we create sustainable designs that artfully respond to each site’s unique context.”
RIGHT: Refined, exposed structural steel elements juxtaposed against the natural materials and traditional stone create a sophisticated design that is at once contemporary, rustic and, ultimately, timeless.

IBRAHEEMS RUGS & FURNISHINGS BOUTIQUE Born from an inspired familial tradition that began more than four decades ago in Pakistan under the auspices of founder Kamal Ibrahim, Ibraheems Rugs & Furnishings Boutique brings a rich combination of craftsmanship, passion, artistry and history to Denver and beyond. Once a modest furnishings and fine rugs purveyor, Ibraheems has grown into one of Colorado’s most prestigious rug boutiques. Today, it is led by Ibrahim’s three sons, Hamza, Umair, and Uzair, who have brought a fresh and intriguing perspective to the industry through best-in-class materials, meticulous craftsmanship and a unique and personalized design methodology. “We design ground up,” Umair asserts. “We believe choosing the right rug will set a standard, color palette and design theme for the space. Laying out the design foundation with a rug, watching it grow and seeing the end result is the best part.” The Ibrahims infuse their sophisticated rugs with contemporary flair while remaining loyal to the classic principles of rug making and design. “Transitional is our favorite style. You can find the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary,” Uzair says. “Furthermore, it has the adaptability aspect, which can move toward either side of the traditional or contemporary design spectrum.” Catering to a discerning clientele ranging from private homeowners to interior designers, Ibraheems Rugs & Furnishings Boutique is recognized for its budget-conscious approach to customer service. “We understand everyone has a budget, and we respect that. In every project, we strive to make it look as though there was no budget!” Hamza enthuses.

Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? Good design must deliver form and function at an accessible price without negatively impacting the environment. Respecting the full life cycle of these beautiful hardwoods from forest to floor is paramount. How do you define luxury? I think of luxury as any object or experience that provides a wonderful rush of enjoyment and satisfaction. Price isn’t always a defining factor, because to the customer, luxury is subjective. What are you working on next? I am focused on expanding partnerships with notable designers, architects and builders who are interested in products that tell a story. Finding those who are seeking differentiation is crucial.
SCANDINAVIAN HARDWOODS Natural beauty and distinction are the principles upon which Scandinavian Hardwoods has built its reputation for providing premier, high-performing floor coverings. “Our floors are tasteful and clean,” explains Marc Bacher, the company’s founder and CEO. “We strive to make the best-performing product that looks absolutely stunning. This is one of the many reasons why we do not have any solvents in our finish. It makes for a very clear, beautiful look. We want the natural beauty of the wood to always be front and center.” And Bacher is well versed in what it takes to create exceptional floor coverings. He practically grew up in the flooring industry while simultaneously growing the business as a young sales rep for Kährs, one of the oldest manufacturers of hardwood flooring in the world. There he discovered the importance of innovation, quality, commitment to local sourcing and sustainability, which ultimately led him into product development for the company. It was this experience that fostered his desire to build on everything he had learned and redefine accessible luxury. “When I left the company, I saw an opportunity to stay connected by bringing high design and luxury hardwood flooring to market at a reasonable price. This is what drives Scandinavian Hardwoods,” he explains. The ultimate goal for the brand is to take each project to the next level with products that provide an exceptional experience. “Beyond just looks is the history in each plank. You feel a wonderful connection to nature, along with the hard work that the people of Nybro, Sweden, have put into these products for more than 70 years,” Bacher reveals. “We work exclusively with designers, architects and builders. My goal is to help them gain greater recognition with the exceptional interiors they are creating by expanding their choices of color palettes and finishes as well as unmatched quality.”

What steps can clients take to make their experiences more personally rewarding? A client who has a team of professionals, from the architect to the interior designer and contractor, will end up with a home that is exactly as they envisioned. The more creative eyes on a project, the better! How do you define luxury? Luxury describes a place or thing that makes one feel special.
THE CALLICRATE COMPANY The interiors of The Callicrate Company are individually and beautifully designed to reflect the styles and influences of both their owners and surroundings. Each singular setting complements the lifestyle of the end user while having its own distinctive life and energy. “The philosophy of The Callicrate Company is to interpret our clients’ ideas in order to create a home that reflects their personality and lifestyle,” shares longtime design luminary and The Callicrate Company president Cindy Callicrate. In order to accomplish highly personalized interiors, underscored by one-on-one, attentive service, Callicrate and her team of design professionals limit their work to one or two projects at a time. As Callicrate notes, this business philosophy ensures “the highest possible service and dedicated attention to each client.” The designer points to nature and the environment as inspirations but emphasizes her clients as her primary influences. “The key influences in my work will always be the needs and desires of my clients while creating an environment that is livable and reflective of the surroundings,” she says. Based in Eagle, Colorado, the full-service firm has been an integral part of the design community for almost 28 years, with experience in new construction, remodeling, space planning, specification of interior fixed finishes and furnishings procurement, to name a few. “We understand all aspects of how to create an atmosphere that is the result of our clients’ dreams and expectations,” Callicrate says. “I love to be able to turn a client’s vision into a place where they are happy and comfortable.”

What are your favorite styles to work on and why? The combination of neoclassical and contemporary styles would have to be my personal favorite. I enjoy creating relaxed elegance with character and originality. What do you like most about your job? Working with my clients to create homes that are comfortable, livable and sensitive to their lives and personalities is very rewarding to me.
PRATT DESIGNS Leveraging her intuitive sense of design, keen eye for aesthetics and broad range of design experience, owner and principal designer Tammy Pratt has established her namesake firm, Pratt Designs, as one of the most soughtafter interior design firms in Denver. Since opening its door in 2008, Pratt Designs has amassed a stunning portfolio of some of the most prestigious homes in Denver’s most elite neighborhoods. Design is something that comes rather naturally to Pratt. “I knew I wanted to be an interior designer since I was big enough to push my parents’ furniture around,” she admits. Pratt parlayed her childhood interest into a successful career after receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design from the Watkins College of Art, Design & Film in Nashville. Since then, she has spent the past 15 years ensuring her clients are provided with the ultimate design experience, no matter the project, from creation to completion. “Pratt Designs’ expertise in project management and value engineering extends to architects, builders, developers, contractors and homeowners,” Pratt says. “We are experienced in new construction, renovations, kitchen and bath design and furnishings.” Along with exceptional attention to detail, Pratt Designs has garnered a reputation for building relationships and providing thorough, open communication with clients throughout any design phase. “We begin by exploring the goals and needs of our clients,” she explains. “We work closely with them from the beginning stages of space planning, material selection and construction to the final stages of design and installation of custom furnishings.” Pratt acknowledges that each project is unique to the client’s desires, each with its own distinct touches. Creating custom, luxurious, functional and transformative interiors is the brand’s ultimate goal for each project.

What are your favorite styles to work on and why? Clean and horizontal designs that speak to both a unity and a refreshing vitality. What would be your dream creative project? A wonderful room or grotto with stone walls where we might provide a fantastic wine cellar and tasting room. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? That which is classic in the sense that it has an appearance of obvious quality and is not faddish or ephemeral.
WILLIAM OHS William Ohs was founded with a goal in mind: to put an end to the modular kitchen. A pioneer in the industry since 1972, founder Bill Ohs has succeeded in doing this and more, becoming known for handcrafted custom residential furniture, shelving and entertainment centers. Once a small shop under the auspices of Ohs alone, the company has today grown into a multifaceted business with a 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and president Robert Cilli to aid in preserving its original mission: to provide customers with the most elegant, classic kitchens made in America. “We search for what is timeless and enduring in furniture and cabinet design,” Cilli says. “Classic is characterized by simple, tailored lines that fit a variety of times and places.” In keeping to this philosophy, the William Ohs team aims to create spaces that simultaneously innovate, maintain a sense of classic elegance and meet the every want and need of the client. For Ohs and his team, the goal is to manufacture kitchen furniture units that seamlessly combine with each other, creating a transitional look that includes traditional and contemporary elements. Of his creative process, Ohs says, “It starts with observation and study: peruse design literature, including books and magazines. Then, travel and discover: visit your projects and study your competitors. Finally, distill and simplify: redraw and eliminate the extraneous. As Leonardo da Vinci is said to have remarked, ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.’ ” This sentiment is clearly conveyed in the company’s portfolio, which boasts kitchens, baths and furnishings of sophistication, functionality and luxury born of conciseness. Always striving to achieve the vision of the client, the artisans at William Ohs know that the definition of success is a happy homeowner.

What steps can clients take to make their experiences more personally rewarding? The more information that is provided, the better we are able to serve our clients. We want the design to feel like it is just as much theirs as ours. What do you strive to create when you’re working on a project? What’s most important to you? We want to create an outdoor environment where our clients feel at home—a space where they and their family feel safe and a place that is unique to them. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes “good design”? A good design is one that flows with the home as well as its natural surroundings. The design should respond to the context it is in.
YARD WORKS DESIGN For Robert Hahn, a degree in landscape architecture from Penn State University was inspired by his combined passions for the natural world and his innate inclination toward design. Fast-forward 20 years and Hahn has amassed an astounding portfolio as a renowned landscape architect and owner of Yard Works Design. The firm has built a reputation as a leader in Denver’s luxury landscaping market, offering services ranging from landscape design and project management to construction of outdoor kitchens, pools, spas and fireplaces. The company is rooted in a philosophy of sustainable, indigenous designs that take into account the natural surroundings in which they are built. “Our projects in mountain communities are influenced and inspired by the natural beauty that can be found throughout Colorado—colors, textures and the grandness found in nature. We use native plant material and source local building materials on these projects,” Hahn explains. “Our city projects are influenced by the dynamic and contemporary architectural styles that are emerging throughout the city.” Communication and flexibility throughout a project are cornerstones of the brand’s success. “We work with clients throughout both the design and construction process and remain their one point of contact with constant interaction,” Hahn says. “Our designers work to create an outdoor space that fits their requirements and budget. Designs are altered throughout the process to ensure the end product exceeds our clients’ expectations.” Hahn is also quick to dispel any misconceptions about the impact that he intends for his designs. “The designs we create are more than just landscapes,” he says. “They are outdoor spaces where our clients create lasting memories with their loved ones in a space that is designed to enrich their life.”

What do you like most about your job? I love that I do not think of it as a job. I enjoy seeing my visions come to life. This is my life and my passion. I love creating something special.
Nadine Lange Owner/Developer 900 Pennsylvania Street Denver, Colorado nadine@ninehundredpenn.com ninehundredpenn.com
What are your favorite hobbies? I enjoy traveling and playing golf. My bucket list includes combining the two and playing golf around the world. What is most critical when buying a house? The living experience—the quality of life experience, which includes quality of construction, views and an indoor-outdoor experience. It’s all about the details.
900 PENN Less than two years ago, Nadine Lange sold her highly successful software development company and entered the realm of real estate development in pursuit of creating a residence where she herself would want to live—in other words, it had to be exceptional. “I had always wanted to live in a mid-rise to high-rise with views of downtown,” Lange says. “I aspired to live more than comfortably in a high-end property; it started with that vision.” Under Lange’s stewardship, that vision was brought to reality in the form of 900 Penn, an address that has quickly become one of the most sought-after residences in Denver’s historic Governors’ Park neighborhood. Lange drew inspiration from her own travels and used them in her approach to developing the exclusive property. “I wanted to bring the style of Europe and New York to Denver. My amazing team helped enhance my concept,” she says. Aside from the open, spacious design and private, single-floor residences, each with its own unique view, 900 Penn offers astounding details that elevate it to a level of unrivaled prestige. “My philosophy focuses on the details of quality, elegance and functionality. What you see is what you get,” she says. And what you get goes well beyond the expectations offered by many luxury residences, particularly in terms of ensuring an authentic outdoor living experience. Each fully automated residence features retractable glass wall systems with automatic roller shades that open to anywhere from 500 to 1,500 square feet of outdoor living space. Glass balcony rails further optimize the breathtaking views of the city and surrounding mountains. “There has not been a boutique property that has been created to this level of craftsmanship and elegance in Denver,” Lange says. A
vivid shade of purple paint covers the front door and the shutters of the house Petra Richards designed for a couple and their two children in Cherry Hills Village. Inside, there are explosions of yellow, orange and green. A shifting textural palette creates a dynamic sensory experience, and the play between curved and angled furniture forms is similarly captivating. It’s a home that feels like an otherworldly escape from its surroundings—a design Neverland that brims with enchantment. “A mixture of different elements always creates interest and balance,” Richards says. “Playfulness and eclecticism flow through this house.” The couple wasn’t looking for Neverland when they found it. “I’m an entrepreneur and my husband is a real estate developer, so I’m always looking at properties,” the wife says. “I stumbled upon this beautiful house in a bucolic neighborhood and showed it to my husband. We realized that with a few major tweaks, we could have the house we’ve always wanted.” To make that happen, they called on the talents of Richards (a close friend), architect Mark Rudnicki and builder Tom Gruber to reimagine their new home. Those modifications included reworking the existing layout. “We gutted about 80 percent of the interior and then started over again,” says Rudnicki. “In the original floor plan, the master suite was on the first level, and the clients wanted all the bedrooms, including a new guest suite, to be upstairs.” To achieve that goal, more space was added LUXESOURCE.COM / 251

Designer Petra Richards gave a home in Cherry Hills Village a sense of whimsy with colorful interiors. A pouf by Cisco Brothers stands at the base of a new curved staircase in the foyer, which leads to a voluminous living room appointed with two chairs by Bright Chair Company and an Anees Upholstery daybed.

to the diagonal west wing of the house via a pop top-style second level, which now accommodates a master suite and another bedroom. In addition, two bedrooms in the original two-story section were joined to form a large guest suite. “On the ground floor, the old master bedroom became the wife’s office,” notes Rudnicki. The kitchen moved to the former family room, which was relocated into a new addition, and a wide opening connects the two spaces. Richards collaborated with Rudnicki and the owners during the process and suggested adding such elements as curved walls, one to anchor the breakfast area’s banquette and another, this time in glass, in the yoga room. Both reinforce a large curved staircase added to the foyer, which was pushed out 5 feet from the front façade. “Mark’s sharp angles and Petra’s soft rounds complemented each other,” says the wife. Additionally, glass doors connect a newly designed covered terrace to the living room. “They can have indoor-outdoor social events,” says Gruber, who managed the construction. “The remodel makes the house more modern and comfortable for a family.”
As the updated architecture helped modernize the house, so did the new finishes and the rich palette of colors Richards applied to both the exterior and the interior. She painted the traditional brick in a cool gray and punctuated it with the dark purple of the shutters and the front door. “When the family took a trip to the south of France, they fell in love with the lavender fields, as well as the grays and the creams of typical French houses,” Richards explains. The kitchen’s sleek neutral cabinetry is offset with bright orange light fixtures and yellow leather on the banquette. “This is where the family mainly hangs out, so I wanted it to feel happy and inviting,” she says. In the formal dining room— where design inspiration came from a vintage wedding kimono that hangs on the wall—Richards favored bright tones grounded with a muted silk rug. “I covered the seat cushions of Chippendale chairs with a green silk-cotton and chose lacquered orange walls,” the designer says. “There’s a feeling of lusciousness,” the wife adds. “The lacquer makes the walls look like candy.”
Architect Mark Rudnicki worked with Cobo Architectural to create new cast stone panels as cladding for the expanded entrance. Inspired by houses in the south of France, Richards reimagined the home’s façade by painting the brick a light gray tone and the shutters and front door a bright shade of purple.

Richards selected gold-toned marble for the floors and tub surround of the master bathroom. The bronze bench, by Paul Ferrante from John Brooks Incorporated, is upholstered with a Bergamo Fabrics silk-velvet. Beside the tub is a Corbin Bronze sculpture from Egg & Dart.
Richards kept things practically achromatic in the living room, instead creating drama by juxtaposing textures. “If you don’t have color, then you need to add warmth and depth another way,” explains the designer, who customized a massive sculptural fire surround made of dark marble for the space. She then countered the severity of the material with Jiun Ho Collection wood coffee tables. Pieces upholstered with cotton and linen and a wool rug also temper the marble, as well as the room’s sprinkling of bronze accents, which include a floor lamp and a side table by Christian Liaigre. Furnishings with opposing forms add yet another layer of dynamism to the house. For example, Richards foiled the sharp geometry of the living room fire surround with round side tables, chairs with curved backs and an enormous rug with a sinuous camouflage-like pattern. In the master bedroom, a vintage glass chandelier hangs from a
circular recess in the ceiling and complements an oversize rectangular headboard and the room’s square limestone fire surround. “The glass bubbles add softness and sparkle to the space and lend a bit of a delicate feel,” Richards says. With the way so many whimsical elements play off one another, the design lends undeniable buoyancy to the house. “Petra is able to pull in all sorts of aesthetics,” the wife says. “She’s from Germany, studied in London and has traveled to so many places. We’re big travelers, too, and she has a real understanding of who we are as a family.” Richards translated that understanding into a design that’s as adventurous as the couple. “When you’ve been to different places, you have an appreciation for other kinds of beauty and design,” Richards says. “I like bringing in influences from all over the world. This is probably the only house in Denver that has purple shutters.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 259

I
t’s the thrill of the hunt that has kept Eron Johnson, one of Denver’s most venerable antiques dealers, captivated throughout his career. “My whole life I’ve searched out architectural relics,” says Johnson, who began his quests while in high school. “Growing up, I turned my parent’s backyard into a salvage yard.” Today, he uncovers his finds everywhere from auctions and estate sales to thrift stores. One of his most memorable hunts was visiting an old house chockablock with hidden treasures. Upon entering, he found a giant car engine that was leaking oil onto a handmade Persian rug in the living room, while a live monkey in a 7-foottall iron cage stood at the center of the library. “I found some amazing things in that house,” recalls Johnson. “There was Imari and Sèvres porcelain that were just buried among random junk.” To Johnson, the most intriguing thing about uncovering these, or any, treasures is that their existence is essentially a flip of a coin. “It’s amazing when you find something ancient today, regardless of its condition,” he says, “because it’s so against the odds that these things actually survived.” This appreciation for history comes through in Johnson’s private residence, located next door to his shop—both of which are housed in early-20th-century, industrial-style brick buildings. “My place is very eclectic,” says Johnson, who has a knack for curating furnishings and other pieces that span centuries and continents. Case in point: Johnson’s kitchen combines Indian molding, Greek and Chinese vases and ornate Mongolian cabinets, which are all tied together by a 1905 stained-and-leaded glass hanging lamp. His living room, or “castle great room” as he sometimes calls it, catches

light through expansive windows and holds a collection of medieval and Art Nouveau pieces. A bed-turned-coffee table from Southern India mingles with an 18th-century French fireplace mantel and imposing carved-pine columns salvaged from a demolished Spanish church. “I found them on my first trip to Spain and have dragged them to every house I’ve ever lived in,” says Johnson. Johnson’s ardent desire to have the things he cherishes in full view translates into his shop’s inventory, which he calls “a repository of forgotten history.” He displays furnishings, art and architectural salvage ranging from 17th to mid-20th centuries, and the hunt for his treasures is ongoing. For example, he recently found a 17th-century candlestick for four dollars at a thrift store. “I like to collect work made by hands, not factories,” Johnson explains. “That’s what inspires me.” That, along with the inherent stories behind the objects he seeks out. “It’s so exciting to touch history,” he says. “Almost like going through a time machine.”

fter working with his longtime clients (and even their extended family) on projects throughout the country, New York-based designer Marshall Watson teamed up with them again, this time near the scenic mountain town of Telluride. The homeowners—a couple with three daughters—had recently acquired the fourbedroom furnished condo in an alpine-style village, and they called on the designer to bring their new vacation home into alignment with both their aesthetic and lifestyle. “They wanted to replace the existing ski-lodge look for something lighter, brighter and more contemporary,” says Watson about the highly active family. “They live in California but didn’t want to bring a California aesthetic with them. This is their escape, so they wanted to feel like they were in the mountains.” With his clients’ desire for a clear sense of place—as well as keeping a vision of interiors that were clean, elegant and deeply comfortable in mind—Watson began by removing dark textiles, weighty window treatments and ornately carved furnishings. The unveiling revealed a happy surprise. “Once we took out the heavy décor, it exposed a condo that had contemporary lines and lots of natural light,” he says. “The mountain views were spectacular.” Watson moved forward with a goal of “emphasizing the positive and eliminating the negative,” says the designer. A rotunda marked by Crema Marfil marble flooring creates a dramatic entry point to the home. Watson positioned the owners’ lodgepole pine table at its center and accented the commanding piece with a bowl from Telluride Gallery of Fine Art. The shade linen is by Kravet, and the bench is by Donghia.
Working with Dan Witkowski of Full Circle HOA Management, who acted as the owners’ representative and oversaw the subcontractors, Watson first focused on the structure’s shell. Woodwork, moldings, walls, floors and finishes were all modernized, and Watson remodeled the powder room and teamed with Thurston Kitchen & Bath to update the kitchen. In the main living areas, Watson treated the walls with a plaster finish in a creamy greige so the family would feel enveloped in warmth and richness after a day spent outside. “The light in the late afternoon is extraordinarily blue because of the snow, so if we used cool colors, the interiors would have become very cold,” explains the designer. The neutral backdrop, combined with furnishings and fabrics in soft hues of chalk, caramel, terra cotta, sage, blue and lilac, keep the attention focused on the outdoor views as well as the textures and extensive woodwork inside. Watson then stained the oak floors a light honey color to echo the shade of the 16-foot-high knotty-fir ceilings and complement the built-ins made from alder. Rather than tear out the multicolored stone fireplace, he had a local fine art and decorative painter, Nancy B. Frank, apply a gel stain to give the stone a gray-whitewashed look to blend better with the new décor. For the designer, collaborating with local artisans was an integral part of the project. “They have a strong grasp of the mountain aesthetic and local resources,” he says, “and the materials used are indigenous, so the home feels like part of the community.” Furniture was selected to salute the contemporary architecture, as well as give a nod to the mining town’s history. Light linens and leathers were combined with the clean lines and practical nature of such pieces as a Parsons-style table in lacquered linen, chairs made with natural rush backs and an aged-zinc mirror. “The furniture harmonizes with the geometric quality of the condominium while also exuding a casual, handmade feel,” says Watson. “Everything has local appeal and is still modern.” A clear sense of entry into the home is established by a rotunda with honed Crema Marfil flooring and a view of the village. The creamy walls and waxed caramelcolor moldings surround the clients’ table featuring a lodgepole pine stump base; a large slice of the tree serves as the tabletop. From there, the living area, library,

media area and formal dining area sit in one open room divided by the fireplace. Furniture groupings and area rugs delineate the spaces to allow the family to enjoy separate activities while still remaining together; swivel chairs make interaction with adjacent spaces natural and easy. Watson chose window treatments fabricated with diaphanous fabrics to let in natural light and to create a private cocoon-like setting when drawn at night. Clerestory windows were left uncovered so sight lines to the mountain peaks remain unobstructed. To play off an existing iron light fixture in the dining area, which appears as if it could have been hand-forged, Watson brought in Donghia glass lamps to add modernity, shimmer and coziness to the living area. Bookshelves were styled with vintage German pottery chosen just as much for its pale color as its quirky shapes, and books were covered

with white parchment paper to keep the palette calm. “The couple wanted bookshelves,” says Watson, “not a cacophony of color.” In the master bedroom, Watson kept to an equally muted palette. A four-poster bed covered with heavy quilts was replaced with a custom modern bed dressed with fine Italian sheets. A round mirror and linen draperies with a circle motif introduce gentle curves into the space, underscoring the softness and offering a counterpoint to the wood ceiling beams above. Watson’s embrace and thoughtful balance of the architecture, natural materials and neutral tones enabled him to create interiors for the home that are as lavish and loft-like as they are cozy and comfortable. “It’s inviting, and it doesn’t feel untouchable,” he says. “You can come in, relax, have a good time and feel special all at the same moment. It’s luxury at its most subtle.”

lyson Khan launched her art career with an unexpected, sold-out show. “It changed everything for me,” she says of the experience and the new medium she’d begun to experiment with. One day, while working as a barista, Khan had found a shattered pastry case in the back alley. Drawn to the strength and integrity of the glass, she began painting on it. Using acrylics, watercolors and spray paint, a collection was born and the outcome was both inconceivable and enlightening. “I had no expectations,” she explains of the show, “but I sold every single painting.” Khan, who now has a studio in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood, has since graduated to painting on stretched canvas, but “the common theme over all these years,” she says, “is working with the relationships between hard-edge shapes and color.” That sensibility is rooted in a childhood spent painting pop bottles with nail polish and watching her grandmother quilt. “I can really see the connections from way back,” explains the artist, reflecting on the influence of her early exploration. “My abstract paintings are born from an urge to make sense of the present, then they unfold through an intuitive process.” This interplay is prominent today; her paintings— influenced by such artists as Sonia Delaunay, Agnes Martin and Anne Truitt for the “innocence, clarity, power and sincerity” in their works— represent a continuous evolution. “The end result is complex but ultimately simple,” says Khan. To start her pieces, Khan will often pull a line from her journal, scrawled on the canvas in “a tangled, cryptic scribble to make the first mark,” she explains. Other times a graphic textile or a detail from an existing painting will provide her with a creative catalyst. From there, she’ll begin building and fine-tuning relationships between the shapes, lines and colors. “It’s quite a process to finish a painting,” she says. “I usually hit a point with every single one where I feel utterly hopeless at the state of things. This is when I often kill the part that I was stubbornly preserving. Soon after that, the sky breaks open and it resolves itself.” In Khan’s latest series, for which she’s already completed several canvases, the aesthetic is less planned and includes large dark areas within an otherwise colorful palette. “I love making paintings,” she says of the method behind her pieces, a selection of which are on view at Artwork Network through March 28. “I’m motivated by both the little and big breakthroughs that happen in the process.” 278 / LUXESOURCE.COM

n the Rocky Mountain state of Colorado, every turn in the road holds the promise of a spectacular new vista—and the magnificent sights are not necessarily limited to snow-capped peaks and expansive valley views. The area around Aspen, for instance, has become home to many impressive examples of architecture, including a contemporary structure by architects Rich Pavcek and Charles Cunniffe designed to both embrace its site along the Roaring Fork River and stand out from a wild landscape of evergreen, aspen and cottonwood trees. “This is a pretty extraordinary environment,” says Cunniffe—and one that required an equally impressive response. The owners, a couple with a large art and sculpture collection, aimed to build a house that would honor that extraordinary environment. To begin, the couple submitted an image of an oceanfront house in Montenegro to six architects and asked each of them to translate that idea into a design appropriate for an Aspen home along the river. “We liked the concept of the openness and the modern architecture,” the husband says of the picture. Ultimately, the angular and contemporary
design by Cunniffe and senior project architect Pavcek, who led the project, grabbed the couple’s attention for its “clean lines and great elevations,” says the husband. With the help of builder Briston Peterson, the architects’ design was realized as a linear structure highlighted by stone walls and accented with wood composite insulation boards. A cantilevered stucco frame wraps the entire building, creating a visual outline. “There are only three main materials and they interact pretty evenly together, so it’s a nice, balanced composition,” Cunniffe explains. “The stone gives the house substance and texture without being too overwhelming. It’s the anchoring element for both the inside and outside of the house.” That stone also creates a striking first impression. For example, floor-to-ceiling glass panels mark the front façade and look into the entry, where a massive Colorado buff sandstone wall anchors a stairway and provides privacy from the street. Adjacent to the panels, a glass pivot door offers a view straight through to the river, and guest rooms on either side of the main level overlook the water, as well. Upstairs, all of the main spaces—living and dining areas,
Stone walls from Mountain West Masonry and Stone and porcelain flooring from Aspen Valley Tile & Stone lend texture to the living area. kitchen and master bedroom—were designed to face the water. “The house was located as close to the river as was allowed,” says Pavcek. The sandstone reappears in the open second-level living area, and additional texture is offered through the fireplace’s stone tile surround and large-format porcelain tile flooring, which flows out to a spacious, partially covered outdoor living room. Glass doors pocket back into the wall to connect the spaces with a 24-foot-wide opening. “The home blurs the line between indoors and out,” explains Pavcek. Building the house so close to the water, however, required careful planning. “All of the water from the surrounding mountains drains into the river,” explains Peterson, who installed an underground drainage system and waterproofed the crawl space under the house to protect against flooding. “When the river rises, the elevation of the water table rises, so we had to dewater the site so the foundation system could be constructed.” Peterson then suggested bringing in landscape architect Nick Soho, who created low-maintenance grounds designed to ease the transition between the house and the surrounding wilderness. “We used plant material in a very structured and massed way to bring the architecture into the landscape and vice versa,” explains Soho, whose design was installed by landscape designer Chad Thomson. During the installation, Thomson worked with the owners to incorporate modifications including a garden with lavender and ornamental spruce trees to conceal the utilities. The landscape, like the rest of the project, thoughtfully showcases pieces from the owners’ art collection. “They showed us photographs of their artwork in the beginning, and we designed specific

spaces for it,” Pavcek says. “It was important for the clients to be able to feature their art and have it visible from different locations.” Emphasizing the art and natural setting was also a priority for Baton Rouge-based designer Carol LaCour. Taking her cues from the architecture, the designer created a neutral color palette that complements the living area’s taupe and gray tones in both the porcelain tile floor and the stone tile of the fireplace. “They travel quite a bit, and they wanted a calm place to come home to,” LaCour says. “We didn’t want the interior to compete in any way with the architecture, their artwork or the gorgeous natural setting.” LaCour, who had previously worked with the owners, used a set of Mies van der Rohe dining chairs from their existing collection as her starting point and paired them with a long Saarinen dining table that could accommodate the couple’s many dinner parties. “It’s organic and curvilinear,”
she says. “It lends a softness to the room.” Likewise, in the living area, a sheepskin rug and a pair of custom sofas covered with Belgian linen add comfort and texture. “The design has a warm contemporary feeling,” LaCour says. The owners couldn’t agree more. “The house has exceeded all of our expectations,” says one of the owners, “and it’s especially comfortable to live in.” It also provides a tangible reminder of its connection to the land. “The river flows year-round, so you always have the sound of the water behind you,” adds the other owner. Through its thoughtful design, the house serves its occupants while still honoring its setting. “The linear nature of the house pays homage to the vertical nature of the trees and mountains and the horizontal plane of the Roaring Fork River,” says Cunniffe. “The glass wall opens to allow nature to filter into the home, both in sight and sound. It’s quite breathtaking to see it all work in a harmonious fashion.”

LISTENING + CREATIVITY
KITCHENS CRAFTED FOR THE MODERN AGE
This venerable architecture practice is joyfully celebrating more than 25 years of collaboration, creativity and detail. Their studio is an inspiring, highly creative setting, staffed by visionary, experienced leaders and the very best, technologically savvy interns. They are small, to be responsive to their clients and projects, yet their creativity, experience and capabilities are considerable.
Warm and inviting sophisticated kitchens, ranging in style from old-world traditional through smart, Italian contemporary designs. For more than 40 years, the William Ohs showroom’s cast of talented designers and professional support staff—together with a Denver manufacturing workforce of able craftsmen who employ modern European methods of cabinet construction—have been creating unique, furniture-quality kitchens expressly designed for individual customers.

DESIGNER SHOW HOUSE This past November, Luxe Interiors + Design, the City of Beverly Hills and Friends of Greystone gathered to celebrate the VIP Preview of the Maison de Luxe designer show house at the historic Doheny Greystone estate in Beverly Hills, California. Over 500 VIP guests perused the reimagined rooms of this iconic estate while in sheer awe of its creativity, beauty and historic architecture. The Entertainologist, Lulu Powers, transformed the courtyard area into a decadent party atmosphere with dramatic lighting and luxurious furniture, exclusively provided by Frontgate. Guests enjoyed cocktails and assorted wines by Fantesca Estate & Winery indulged in delicious hors d’oeuvres. The evening was enhanced by a special award dedication to Luxe Editor in Chief Pamela Jaccarino by the mayor of Beverly Hills, Julian A. Gold, M.D., for her commitment to the restoration of the Doheny Greystone estate. World-class pianist Alexander Borghese provided entertainment throughout the evening by tickling the ivories of Steinway & Sons’ Special Collection Red Pops piano, which was front row center in the estate’s grand hall. Luxe extends its gratitude to the participating designers, sponsors, vendors and showrooms for their generous support of this project.
