EDITOR’S LETTER

This issue is largely dedicated to homegrown design and to the independent makers and companies who are dialing into the made-in-America movement. To be sure, we live in a time where there are no clear-cut guidelines in design (perhaps there never were). Thanks to globalization, social media and the flood of visuals that pass our eyes daily, the sartorial choices we make for our homes are broad and vast, as they should be. Yet there is no denying the underlying current of old-school craftsmanship permeating the landscape. Call it “Americana Chic.” Stamp it “Made in America.” Today, homeowners are embracing all things artisanal, authentic and local. They want to know where the objects being brought into their homes are made and by whom. Makers in cities across the country (who we happily uncover in every issue of Luxe) are responding with thoughtfully crafted forms and materials that appeal to the new sensibility. Ultimately, of course, 21st-century design is a mix; a multicultural mash-up of ideas, with, perhaps, a pinch of Florence, a dose of Athens and, for good measure, a smattering of Detroit.

Writer / Washington, D.C. What made you want to become a writer? Curiosity. I love finding out why individuals think the way they do. I also enjoy stringing words together in what I hope is a painterly way that gives people understanding or lets them see something differently. If I could interview anyone, it would be… Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frank Lloyd Wright or Donald Judd. They were all revolutionaries with such unique visions and strong characters. Each of them led an interesting life, making iconic art and architecture in authentic and thoughtful ways. Is there anything intriguing you currently in the world of design? I love the way design continues to connect to nature with lots of glass, sunlight and simple, organic materials. Form and texture have evolved and, as a result, I feel that buildings and furniture today are much more dynamic. Photographer / New York

If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? I would love to have the opportunity to experience, and also photograph, James Turrell’s Roden Crater in Arizona. His work is all about light, space and how we as viewers perceive our surroundings. Most memorable Luxe assignment: A Hamptons house with the talented Jennifer Post. Light is a critical feature for every architectural or interiors shoot and, in this case, the changing weather conditions worked perfectly throughout our day—cloudy or sunny when we needed it! What type of architecture inspires you? Truly bespoke structures that elegantly solve problems and create energetic, livable spaces. I’ve had a longtime collaboration with architect Ali Tayar, and the houses he has designed—from Rhode Island to Beirut—embody this approach with refinement and finesse. Documenting these environments is both challenging and invigorating.

On an early meeting with the architect, Brian Hemingway, the owner of the house watched him take out a pen and just start drawing; he told me that observing him was such a magical part of the process. My biggest design influence comes from… The process of architecture and its ability to transform the simplest idea into an elegant, functional structure. It reminds me that creativity is about both the journey and the destination. Who is the most fascinating person you’ve ever met? Charles Smith, owner of Charles Smith Wines in Walla Walla, Washington. He’s a bigger-thanlife personality, an intuitive thinker and a brilliant marketer. or American furniture production, the yen for substantive, enduring quality— something commonplace only decades ago—has certainly reached a fever pitch in a day where genuineness in products is all but profuse. This nostalgic zeitgeist is ushering in a new wave of makers from various disciplines and perspectives, each bound by the desire to create in unique, original ways. “Design is the key,” says Sara Ossana of Warren, Rhode Island-based O&G Studio. “We’ve tapped into the idea that good design could save the continuity of craftsmanship.” Artist and furniture craftsman Ian Stell of New York City, known

for his highly unorthodox, mesmerizingly sculptural pieces, simply calls this widespread craving for authenticity an “American design renaissance.” “There’s a competition that has been intensifying,” he says, “and it’s pushing both quality and originality.” But what is American furniture design today? According to Brooklyn-based designer Asher Israelow, it is not bound by a style but rather an ethos. “There is no aesthetic correlation,” he says, “but it is aspirational; it’s forward-thinking. It’s reinventing the wheel. American designers are not necessarily bogged down by traditional craft techniques and apprenticeships that perhaps

our European counterparts are.” Israelow was studying architecture in school when on a whim, he took up woodworking while completing his thesis. “I’m entirely self-taught with wood. It became an obsessive hobby,” he says. Instead of becoming an architect, Israelow shifted gears to furniture because he believed it would provide more creative license. It is a circuitous route to furniture production that many young designers echo. Los Angeles-based Sabin Ousey was working in sales at Lawson-Fenning when he began making furniture for his own apartment as a creative outlet, prompting him to open his own company last January. His collection pays

homage to various viewpoints, from Paul McCobb to Spanish Colonial motifs. “America, particularly California, lacks centuries of history, so it gives us an opportunity to forge a new aesthetic,” says Ousey. “Rather than copying tradition, we are playing with historic motifs. That is how new genres and trends emerge.” New York interior designer Eddie Lee finds an egalitarian quality in today’s design scene. “Furniture makers are coming from all different backgrounds these days,” he says. “That’s a very American concept.” Stephen Antonson, the Brooklyn plaster master who references Giacometti and Gio Ponti in his sculptural line of work, thinks there is something

to this “design first” ingenuity that separates the successful American designer. “You can go to the design shows and say, ‘oh, there’s the guy that studied woodworking in school: he’s made the most amazing dovetail you’ve ever seen,’ but it’s rather uninspired design-wise,” he says. Like Israelow and Ousey, Antonson never studied plaster or furniture making in school. “I think there’s a streak of naiveté that allows good designers to do weird things, to be open to doing something backward. That’s where innovation happens. You’re not trying to make this boring, perfect thing that is like all the other boring, perfect things.” Ty Best of Chicago’s Caste Design,

None of this is to say that design traditions do not inform the current American furniture marketplace. Stickley, the pioneer of Mission and American Arts and Crafts furniture, has been around for over a century and has changed hands only once—from the original Stickley family to the Audi family in 1974—all the while employing their original, traditional woodworking techniques. That is not to say that the Manlius, New York-based company hasn’t propelled forward with every generation; Aminy Audi, the CEO of Stickley, credits this to the company’s diversification and a resistance to laurelresting. “We’ve added many different styles, from updated traditional to midcentury modern collections,” she says, adding, however, that it is the education of the consumer that matters most.

who formerly had a life and career in the fashion industry, also echoes the sentiment: “It sounds sort of Pollyanna, but I never knew about the possibilities of what could go wrong; I went into it head first without any hesitation.” Best’s refined, hand-hewn pieces, often in weighty materials like bronze and marble, are nationally distributed by Holly Hunt. He finds the isolation of rural Montana instead of community hotbeds like Brooklyn or Los Angeles to be the best source of unfiltered inspiration. “I think if I had more contemporaries opining on my designs, my work wouldn’t be so avant-garde,” he says.

“When people understand the work and quality behind one of these pieces, they realize it is a lifetime investment. It is something they can pass on to a future generation.” O&G Studio is a contemporary example of modernizing a deeply ingrained American motif—the Windsor chair, whose roots stem from our earliest English colonists. Ossana and partner Jonathan Glatt electrify the genre with unexpected colors and proportions. “It’s something intrinsic to the American design community,” Ossana says, “our history allows us to question authority.” New York-based interior designer Brad Ford, who has become a kind of pied piper for independent craftsmanship, says, “The U.S. has become one of the most dynamic places for burgeoning design talent.” Last October, Ford held his second-annual Field + Supply fair in High Falls, New York. “Growing up in a small town in Arkansas and being a creative kid, I always loved going to the arts and crafts fairs,” he says. “It created a sense of community that is now so often lacking.” Ford decided to take this concept and elevate it by cherry-picking some of the best American designers across various disciplines, like Israelow, Apparatus and The Future Perfect. “With Field + Supply, we want the work to be serious but the experience to be anything but,” he says, adding, “It is important that design not be alienating. Consumers are more and more responding to the meaning and soul of something that is made by hand. It automatically separates itself from other mass-produced furnishings.” Ford is so confident in the shifting consumer paradigm that this fall, he opened Fair, a showroom at the New York Design Center highlighting elevated craft and design, representing many of the American designers he curated for Field + Supply. No matter the aesthetic, whether historically referential or avant-garde, the independent American furniture maker offers a quality that an outsourced big-box manufacturer simply can’t. “My clients want to understand and know the object that they have a personal relationship with; our local makers give us that,” says interior designer Celerie Kemble, who is deeply involved in keeping artisan traditions afloat—particularly with The Alpha Workshops, the nation’s only nonprofit organization providing creative HIV-positive individuals with industry-specific training and employment in the decorative arts. “People are increasingly caring about these pieces that they live with. Furniture is a very intimate thing, and so, too, should be the process.”

For Jiun Ho, the San Francisco designer behind the furniture collection that bears his name, it all comes down to narrative. “I want to tell a story,” he says of the line, now celebrating its 15th anniversary. More often than not, the stories stem from his travels (he spends at least three months a year traveling the world, with recent stops in Kyoto and Sicily). “I take a lot of pictures to remind me of my experiences,” he notes. “There are times when I look at things and say ‘that could be a base for a dining table’ and there are times when I have to look at the photo, take a step back and create from there.” He points to the Maras chair in his newly introduced Jiun Ho Collection V as an example. “If you look at the lines of the chair and the stonework found at Machu Picchu and Sacsahuamán in Peru, you can see where the inspiration comes from.” The rest of the 16-piece collection similarly draws on Ho’s wide-ranging travels and experiences, as well as weaves together the narrative threads of previous introductions and makes graceful allusions to modern art. When first launching his business, though, the designer’s primary objective was not building a furniture brand, but rather to create unique spaces and user-friendly experiences. Then a client asked him if he would sketch some furniture. “I said, ‘Sure, I can give it a try,’ ” he recalls. “I came up with 35-40 pieces.” Connecting with a factory based in Southern California, Ho began manufacturing the pieces (most of which have been made in the United States ever since) and a brand was born. As the company has evolved, so has Ho’s approach. “We create the trends; we don’t let them drive us,” he says. “We focus on timeless, elegant shapes and forms and emphasize the tranquility, balance and pureness of the pieces. That, and attention to detail, is what’s important to us.”

Steeped in rich, historical references, the Biltmore Estate has been inspiring design and architecture since its reveal in 1895 by George Washington Vanderbilt II, grandson of famed industrialist and philanthropist Cornelius Vanderbilt. The 250-room French Renaissance château set upon 8,000 acres of pristine Ashville, North Carolina, land was designed as a country retreat for the family and remained so well into the 20th century. With certainly no shortage of inspiration to draw from—the house itself features over 100,000 square feet comprised of 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces— the artisanal team behind Wildwood Lamps & Accents turned to the estate as a muse for their most recent collection, receiving unparalleled access to the pieces that made this sprawling house a home. One such piece uncovered during the brand’s creative pursuit was an ancient cinnabar box belonging to George’s wife, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser Vanderbilt. Quickly recognizing the potential in the raised floral relief etching, the Wildwood team developed big plans for the motif: Aptly named after the lady of the house, the resulting Edith lamps (shown) are conveyed in three colorways that each take on a different persona. The Edith lamp in Red, for instance, reflects a traditional Asian-like feel, while the Powder Blue hue professes a more serene garden-esque vibe; Oyster proves to be the chameleon of the group, able to live in both modern and traditional environments. All flaunting brushed finishes, modern silhouettes and sleek drum shades, this versatile collection effusively transcends aesthetics, genres and eras—taking its place as a graceful classic with a firm foothold in today’s interiors.

I’ve always been an artist, and after working for several small businesses, mostly in jewelry, I realized that it was time to start my own design company. My sister, Katharine Hable Sweeney, and I launched Hable Construction in New York City in 1999, but in 2009, I decided to make the move to Athens. This was an eye-opening experience in that I realized how productive having my own studio was for my art. Describe your design aesthetic. I don’t play by the rules and I don’t discriminate where I turn to for inspiration—one day it’s Egyptian metalwork and the next it’s a Japanese kimono. I look to different cultures for inspiration in my color palettes and patterns. Tell us about your relationship with Hickory Chair. We started working together about six years ago on an exclusive fabric collection, and we’ve grown from there. Our common goals were to create quality products and make as many pieces domestically as possible. Why do you think it’s so important to keep production stateside? It is crucial for me to see the furniture being prototyped with my eyes on the product, and I work with the designers and engineers to make sure that all of the details that make the pieces special are being executed as they should. It’s such a luxury to see the hands that go into making each piece of our collection. We love the blue mirrored console for Hickory Chair’s sister company, La Barge (shown). It’s part of 25 new pieces we are adding to the original collection for the brand, and it is made with gilded wood and blue glass. I had seen that blue shade in a few midcentury pieces, but nothing current; we searched all over until we finally tracked it down abroad. I’m crazy about simple design that is also chic, and I think this geometric piece fits the bill and would be fantastic in a foyer. What’s next? An additional collection for Hickory Chair will come later this year. The pieces are incredible, with a lot of new silhouettes, and our focus continues to be on the sculptural aspect of each design. Visually, the new collection will tell a more transitional, modern story. Incorporating an artistic approach to design, I work hard to let the tiniest of details speak for the entire product.

Why hardware? I was attracted to the partnership with Rocky Mountain Hardware because of the high-quality products they produce—handcrafted hardware made with time-honored casting methods. It was a pleasure to work with all of the talented artisans that created these pieces. What was it about Beverly Hills’ Trousdale Estates that inspired you? I moved to Los Angeles when I was 11 years old and it was then that I was first exposed to midcentury modern design. The Trousdale area boasts amazing midcentury architecture created by such a diverse group of architects. What I loved about these

homes in contrast to the boxy apartments that I was accustomed to in New York was that they had clean lines, open floor plans and, in a lot of cases, an abundance of glass. They were like the glamorous homes I had seen in Hollywood movies. And this collection represents that. Tell us more about the artistry and techniques. At Rocky Mountain, they still cast and finish each piece by hand, which is so impressive; they really bring to life this high level of artistry. With Trousdale, we wanted to generate products that married that craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. The texture came out of wanting a more tactile experience with each piece, as well as serves as a way to visually emphasize the handcrafted nature. Give us a peek at your creative process. It’s a combination of sketching, looking at historical references and listening to music. “Hollywood Swinging” by Kool & the Gang was definitely inspirational in making this line. Finishes can truly transform a piece—taking something from traditional to totally rock and roll. Take us through the finishes. Trousdale will be offered in all of the Rocky Mountain finishes. Personally, I will be using the bronze light finish on a home I’m building in the Bahamas.

URBAN LEGEND MOCKINGBIRD TRAIL

Within the enclave of Fort Lauderdale’s FATVillage, Rebecca Bradley and Gage Couch, of landscape architecture firm Cadence, have been busy devising a way to transform their community by bringing art to the masses. With the help of sculptor Valeria Yamamoto, Girls’ Club and Flagler Garden, they came up with just the thing: a two-mile urban art trail that will link underutilized spaces and encourage locals to get out and explore. The concept follows the mythological tale of a giant, illusive mockingbird who leaves evidence of his existence along the trail (think metal feathers, stone footprints, an oversized hatched egg). The project was launched thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward, and as the team continues to seek support, residents can start tracking the bird and dreaming up their own narratives. mockingbirdtrail.com

Why foster creative communities? We’re such big fans of this generation’s movement to work for themselves, and because of that, we enjoy supporting and promoting local artists and makers. Florida is our home and we love it here, so fostering a creative community around us brings a sense of comfort. With the right team of genuine and talented people, anything is possible.

Who is your greatest influence? Jessica Hische. She’s a letterer and illustrator but so much more than that. She’s also a trailblazer and pokes fun at herself as an over-sharer, which stems from how much she cares to inform the art and design community for the better. Which local artisans have caught your eye? Christina Cernik is our go-to photographer. With her attention to detail, love for our tropical environment and her humble personality, we think she is the best-hidden gem we could have stumbled across. And Flower & Fringe is our newest favorite for all things floral. We have an obsession with blooms and using them as elements in our work, so we’re beyond glad to have found such a talented florist right in our backyard.

What’s next for Chelley Co.? When looking into new collaborations, we seek those who are like-minded, who understand and appreciate thoughtful design. We just wrapped up our Zodiac Flora line, a project we worked on with Brooklyn-based artistdesigner Melissa Deckert. Next up, we’ll introduce Locate Paradise, which illustrates our philosophy that we should all chase our passion, combine our talent and create our paradise. THE STAR SOFA When it came time for Rubelli’s CEO Andrea Rubelli to find a designer to transform his never-before-done fiber-optic woven fabric into a piece of furniture, Rubelli found it to be an easy choice. He called upon Italian-born and New York City-based architect and designer Antonio Pio Saracino, the celebrated creator praised for his use of technology and shape. With Rubelli’s weaving prowess and Saracino’s design finesse, what resulted was a sleek and sexy sofa with spaceship-like curves and cutting-edge technology: the Star sofa. When it was just an idea… It took a few years just to find the right fiber and develop the kind of weave that I wanted. Luckily, a group of technicians at my mill got passionate about the project.

Design inspiration: Lighting is such an important aspect in everything I do so working with it in furniture was intriguing and unusual. The folding is the most important aspect because that’s where it releases more light; that’s where the oval shape and curves come from. There’s no shadow when you’re sitting so the perception is that your body is floating. It’s surreal; you lose the sense of dimension. It’s functional art.

About the design: I was making progress in terms of technology and started sharing the secret project with Antonio. When I was ready to upholster, I asked Antonio because it wouldn’t work on a Donghia sofa. The shape had to be designed with all the right curves to enhance the effect of light. The technology: It’s a great time to play with lighting right now because technology is revolutionizing the industry. The source of light is an LED, which can be dimmed by remote. The LED throws the light into the fiber optics that is woven into the fabric as wefts. A seam or staple would cut the fiber optics—limitation drove the design details.

Limited release: We did 12 sofas, each with a constellation relating to the Zodiac. For these, there are two layers of fiber-optic, one with stretched fabric that allows the stars to shine. We launched the product in Los Angeles, the city of stars, which was a fun coincidence, and the others will be released one by one, starting with one in Milan in April, throughout the following years in art and design fairs and galleries.

WHO: Daniel Kahan, a partner at Smith and Moore Architects in West Palm Beach and a stickler for mastering the details in design. WHY: Because it’s time we break and appreciate all the untapped and often underappreciated beauty that surrounds us. Plus, Kahan’s travel shots make for perfect daydream fodder. GASTON ISOLDI, MAISON&OBJET AMERICAS Last year’s first stateside iteration of the famous French furnishings and accessories fair Maison&Objet made major waves when it landed in Miami. But this year’s version is poised to make an even bigger splash thanks to the fair’s newest addition, Gaston Isoldi. Isoldi’s premiere show as director will take place May 10-13 and will feature over 300 of the world’s most upscale brands and exhibitors, in addition to a special presentation by M&O’s designer of the year, Rafael de Cárdenas. Though the much-talked-about event is quickly helping to expand Miami’s reach on the design map, Isoldi, a proud transplant, insists the city is the perfect place for design-seekers all year-round, and we sat down with him to give us a guide for all the places currently making Miami great. maison-objet.com 9 a.m. Let’s start with breakfast and an espresso at Ella (at right, bottom), Michael Schwartz’s pop-up cafe inside the Palm Court in Miami’s Design District. It’s a great place to gather some morning inspiration, and you’re likely to run into a lot of our partners and exhibitors from Maison&Objet. 10 a.m. Take a walk around the area to tour the shops and showrooms, and to hear news from our exhibitors on what they might be bringing to the fair this year. Some of my favorites are Armani/Casa, Fendi Casa, Natuzzi, Ornare and Waterworks. 11:30 a.m. Head over to get the lay of the land at the Miami Beach Convention Center, where we will be hosting the second installment of Maison&Objet Americas. We expanded the fair into two main halls due to the positive responses of last year. 12 p.m. If you want to stay on the island, Cecconi’s (above) at the Soho Beach

House, with its Cuban-style tile and string lights, is a favorite. They have a fantastic black-truffle-and-goat-cheese pizza. But, to cover more ground, I suggest you jump into the car and head back to the mainland for lunch in Miami’s burgeoning new design center, Ironside, which is located in the Upper Eastside neighborhood. It’s possibly the most exciting place to visit in Miami right now. Tour the open-concept campus and its showrooms, from Enea Garden Design to apure, a lighting system store with product designed by Porsche Design Studio. And don’t forget espresso number two. 2 p.m. Let’s tour Miami’s most iconic sites, including Frank Gehry’s New World Center, Herzog & de Meuron’s Pérez Art Museum Miami and the historic former Bacardi headquarters and Jewel Box, now the YoungArts campus (at right, center). While we’re touring, maybe swing past a couple of high-design projects on-the-rise in Miami to see how they’re coming along, like One Thousand

Museum by Zaha Hadid Architects and Arquitectonica’s Hyde Midtown, SLS Brickell, SLS LUX Brickell, the Paraiso enclave and Brickell City Centre. 4 p.m. Brazilian designers are really doing gorgeous showrooms in Miami right now. Head further south to see this firsthand at Artefacto in Coral Gables; its showroom at the Village of Merrick Park is so spacious and inviting, and its new Jader Almeida (whose chair is shown at right, top) shop-in-shop in Aventura is a big deal for the Miami market. I love the warmth of Artefacto and all of its furnishings. I’ve been following the brand from its start in Miami. 6 p.m. If you’re feeling Parisian, stay in Coral Gables and have dinner at Palme d’Or at The Biltmore Hotel. It’s such a fine dining experience with a dynamic menu and French-inspired ambience. I definitely intend to take the Maison&Objet Paris team here to see how the French theme compares to their restaurants back home.

The house was a historic remodel, and the kitchen was a blank space aside from the blue La Cornue oven. My first goal was to integrate the color of the range so it felt like part of an overall story rather than a random dash of color. I think many are nervous to jump into a bold range choice, but this is proof that it can be done without being too overwhelming.

Best ways to introduce pattern into the kitchen? I love patterned backsplashes! This is an area where you can really set the tone for a kitchen, and it’s an obvious area you can have a lot of fun with. Even tonal or monochromatic patterns can add interest. In this kitchen, we also added the carved island, which gave us a nice, ethnic twist to help balance the backsplash, as well as the very colorful range.

How can color revive and freshen up a kitchen? Color is a great addition to everyday life. White is classic and timeless, of course, but it is also a very safe option. This kitchen is a bit of a hybrid of pattern and color, and I think it is so much more interesting as a result. Plus, as more spaces are openplan these days, embracing a little more color in kitchens allows you to connect rooms more cohesively.

CANNATELLI BUILDERS For Edward Cannatelli, home building is as much a profession as it is a cherished familial legacy. His father, also a home builder, instilled in him a love for the trade and an understanding of the quiet diligence with which it must be approached. “I was my father’s shadow,” Cannatelli shares. “He taught me every aspect of the business, from sweeping floors and finish carpentry to reading and creating blueprints.” The wisdom of his father’s time-and-time-again advice, “Know how to do everything yourself, because you can always count on you,” has led to Cannatelli’s lifelong commitment to master the many facets of the industry, in addition to continually evolving with new techniques and technology. We design in many styles; however, our work is strongly influenced by Asian tropical styles for the outdoors and a sort of looser version of modernism with organic touches for interiors. What are you working on next? We have recently completed projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, and we are currently working on expanding our horizons with projects in Asia and the Middle East.

DAVID FONT DESIGN Guided by a passion for design and the outdoors, landscape architect David Font first pursued studies in landscape architecture at the University of Florida before launching his eponymous design firm, David Font Design, in 2001. Font’s unique design aesthetic, as well as his own philosophy of “creating bliss” regardless of whether the setting is residential, commercial or recreational, quickly elevated David Font Design to one of the most highly recognized landscape architecture firms in South Florida. While the company initially specialized in creating unique outdoor environments, Font’s talents were not limited to only outdoor designs. His interior design skills have received many accolades, including recognition in 2012 as the winner of the premiere episode of HGTV’s “The White Room Challenge.” It was only a year later when he was named America’s Top Renovation expert in the series “Brother Vs. Brother.” This exposure led to the award-winning firm’s evolution as a full-service design firm offering both landscape architecture and interior design. Font places great value in client relationships, crediting them as an invaluable part of the design process. “I strive to create friendships with my clients. Achieving a personal appreciation for each other benefits the design process tremendously,” he says. Even with 15 years of success as the owner of David Font Design and international recognition of his design talents to his credit, Font still defines success in his ability to continually raise the bar. “A successful project is one in which we exceed expectations—by far. dventure often goes hand in hand with homes that have a past, especially those spanning decades and requiring more than a little nip and tuck. Sometimes, romance fades with revelations not pretty, such as what goes on behind walls and under floors. But then there also are pleasant surprises, almost like finding buried treasure— peeled-back layers revealing original visions. For interior designer Allison Paladino and the rest of the design team of this Palm Beach abode, that was part of the joy: restoring some architectural elements of a 1920 Addison Mizner home while updating the footprint and interiors for part-time residents. “It’s a beautiful traditional home,” says Paladino, who collaborated on the project with junior partner Zita Rudd. “We wanted to honor the time period but make it livable.” With nods to Venetian Gothic style, the complex sits like a jewel on the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach. Mizner had blended Moorish, Spanish and typical Mediterranean elements reminiscent of architecture that might grace the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. The stucco, tile-roofed buildings on this compound consist of a main house and guesthouse, with courtyards framed by palms, fanciful fountains and lush tropical landscaping.

Purchased years ago as a vacation home, the property underwent renovations in the early 1990s; first the main house, and then the guesthouse once it was also acquired. The guest home was gutted, and a dining room added, bringing the two-story floor plan up to a comfortable 3,750 square feet. “It involved a lot of site work,” says builder Tim Givens, “including the seawall, pilings, additions, the landscape, drainage, the driveway, and the remodeling of the old garage.” The couple loved the results so much that they ended up living in that house as their primary residence. But as their family grew, so did their need for more space. The logical move—back to the larger main house. The most current do-overs focused on enlarging the kitchen and opening it to freshly created casual dining and family areas, enhancing light and taking advantage of views—plus, updating the master bathroom and walk-in closet. Game changers. The designers, builder, and architects Ken Brower, who worked on the previous renovations, and Mark Marsh, the most current architect for the main home, all were on the same page with the homeowners about their remodeling and décor goals. And Paladino, who

The original terra-cotta floor in the main home entry was refurbished and waxed. The slender chest of drawers is a French antique from the ownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; collection. grew up in a Mizner home, says: “We all are big fans of historic preservation. We wanted to do it the right way.” Marsh concurs. “The homeowners were trying to preserve the charm,” he says. “Basically, we were excavating a landmark structure while changing the rhythm and feel of the interiors to make them more refreshing and accommodating for current lifestyles.” For instance, Givens recalls the wife wanting more family-friendly spaces. “That led to the kitchen renovation,” he says. “It was a series of small rooms back in the day. All of these types of houses were designed with staff kitchens kind of hidden away. But today, everybody likes to spend time in the kitchen.” The galley transformed into a generous 16-by-32-foot layout, and the family room now occupies the far south end (with a water view), where there once was a formal fabric-tented dining room. A spacious 4-by-9-foot island provides storage as well as casual seating. And between the two spaces, an oversize crotch mahogany

table teamed with chairs covered in a watery blue coral patterned fabric is where the family now gathers for meals. A light, creamy palette punctuated with blue (one of the wife’s favorite colors) amid sea glass greens is consistent throughout. Surfaces mix smooth and refined with rustic touches: silky Venetian plaster finishes join light-stained wide-plank floors and limed ceilings, indigenous woods such as pecky cypress, and elegant mahogany window and door frames. They all provide a rich backdrop for dramatic antiques mixed in with practical, comfortable upholstery. “She has very simple tastes,” Paladino says of the wife. “She didn’t want anything overdone.” So the existing living room, last decorated in the 1990s— with upholstered walls, heavy drapes and pattern-on-pattern fabrics—needed to be dialed down. But the enormously detailed hand-painted and paneled ceiling was a keeper. “It’s spectacular,” says Paladino. “But the problem was, you didn’t know where to look. We wanted to soften it a bit.”

But all were surprised when an electrician set out to install floor outlets so the furniture could be floated. He hit water— and rotting floor joists. “It had been untouched for basically 90 years,” says Marsh. The electrician’s drill went right through the floor that spanned over the original gondola port. So the floor structure was removed, scaffolding erected and the foundation rebuilt. “We reconstructed the framework with pressure-treated, marine-grade lumber,” says Givens, “and waterproofed and stuccoed the underside.” Then the subfloor and a wide-plank reclaimed wood floor were installed. Though the living room is more formal than the nearby family room and kitchen area, the homeowners wanted to be able to use it just as much. “We put in more tailored furniture, and chenille upholstery made it comfy,” says Paladino. “It became very livable.” Custom touches like the owners’ antique bookscases that Paladino had repurposed into a new entertainment center furthers the aged yet refreshed theme. Upstairs, the master suite was reapportioned to now include a generous walk-in shower and bathtub, plus a

walk-in closet. When structural work was being done in the master bathroom (and shoring up to meet hurricane codes), Paladino loved the airy feel of the open ceiling. So a cathedral shape was created and clad in limed pecky cypress. The visual lightness was furthered with translucent shellstone floors and creamy subway tile wainscoting, all complemented with pale blue and green accents. Courtyards and pathways connect the main and guest houses. With an established backdrop of banyan, ficus and coconut palm trees, bougainvillea and dombeyas—thanks to a previous design by Morgan Wheelock Incorporated and installation by Armstrong Landscape Design Group—Michele Bobrowski, of Greenscape Design, layered in plantings such as anthuriums, heliconias, mona lavender and ground orchids for bursts of color. “The garden has a soothing feel and you really must take some time to meditate on all the different hues and textures,” she says. Justin Dwyer, owner of Greenscape, agrees. “It’s clean, simple, tropical and elegant,” he says. An apt description for the houses themselves.

implicity in design is the ultimate sophistication.” That has been John Sculley’s mantra throughout his well-known career, from his days as CEO for Pepsi and Apple, to his current investment ventures along with his wife Diane. The mission statement was no different when the couple embarked on building a new house on the island of Palm Beach. “We wanted the result to be an exceptional, comfortable living experience expressed in a contemporary minimalism of space and materials,” John says. They found a soul mate in New York designer Jennifer Post, who is reputed for her crisp, white modern palette. In this case, Post’s aesthetic would be dressed in the architecture of Bermuda, where John grew up and whose whitewashed stucco walls and stepped rooflines he has always loved. “I wanted to make it magical,” says Post, who outlined a vision for a modern, chic, sophisticated beach home that would reference and incorporate organic materials. “I wanted there to be light, air, freedom of space, simplicity—and architectural heroes.”

The first “hero” was established right away: a square entry with its own stepped roof that replicates a classic Bermuda buttery, designed before refrigeration to keep butter and other perishables cool; it was a collaborative effort among John, Post and architect Peter Papadopoulos. The design-savvy owners worked closely with the architect on a blueprint of large rooms and high ceilings that would flow from that focal point. “We really studied that architecture and balanced the whole house around the Bermuda buttery structure,” Papadopoulos says. Inside, Post created an indoor-outdoor dialogue punctuated with statement-making architectural elements. The massive central living room is anchored on one side with a plantation shutter-style wall—a sculptural metal screen that reveals an equally distinctive stairwell on the other side. “That is the hero of the interiors,” Post says. “It’s reminiscent of iconic plantation shutters, taken to a completely different level.” The designer also took cues from the stucco exterior, which she had slurried and painted to achieve an airy feeling, like a marshmallow, she says. Its interior iteration

is Venetian plaster on every wall—a luscious foundation for the Sculleys’ formidable art collection that includes Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Marc Chagall, among many others. Next, Post lacquered the floors and ceilings throughout the house, creating a high-gloss juxtaposition to the plaster. The living area got special treatment with soaring beamed ceilings—yet another study in white. “The way the light reflects through the house—it’s jewel-like,” Post says. The Sculleys note that the spare palette makes everything else pop. “It gives you an incredible sense of openness,” Diane says, “and it makes the objects in the house appear even more special.” Working closely with Post throughout the entire process, Diane was able to draw from her background in the design industry. “Jennifer and I share an obsessiveness to detail,” says Diane, who built more than 100 houses on Palm Beach as vice president of design for Wittmann Building Corporation before leaving to work with John; her former partner, Paul Wittmann, handled the home’s construction. During the project, a productive dialogue was generated between homeowner and designer. “I knew up front I wanted wallpaper and blue accents throughout,” Diane says. For Post, blue was an intuitive choice for an island abode—but not wallpaper, something she had always dismissed as overly decorative. They finally landed on soft botanical motifs for the LUXESOURCE.COM / 259

master and guest bedrooms. “It works very well,” Post admits. In return, she got her client to warm up to Corian, which she used liberally on shelving and surfaces throughout the house. Never before a fan of the man-made material, Diane says, “Now, I love it!” Post stayed true to her wheelhouse with an all-white kitchen of statuary Carrara marble and custom lacquered cabinetry, anchored by a carefully curated dining area. She designed a Giacometti-inspired frame for the table through Paul Ferrante in New York, and paired it with Roche Bobois chairs that resemble praying mantises. “The table is the hero here,” she says, with the chairs placed as organic sculptures around it. Nature itself plays a large role in the home’s design. The front door opens on an axis that pulls the eye through the living area and out to the loggia and pool. Floor-to-ceiling doors fold back across the rear, revealing a catwalk, as

Post calls it, where the lacquered floors blend seamlessly into the stone terrace. A plate-glass window by the dining table frames a waterfall in Diane’s outdoor yoga area. The Sculleys wanted the landscaping to be designed so none of the surrounding homes are visible. And landscape designer Keith L. Williams delivered. “The house from the beginning was Bermuda-influenced architecture, so we wanted the gardens to mimic this style, as well,” he says. “We worked closely with John and Diane to achieve a lush tropical look, keeping in mind the house and its architectural features.” In the end, John appreciates how the classic Bermudan exterior morphs into a thoroughly modern interior that’s as sophisticated as his and Diane’s New York apartment. “Both of us are very, very sensitive to design,” he says. “What we love about Jennifer is she’s into pure simplicity— and she has impeccable taste.”

Post designed a round partners’ desk that hides a power station for her clients’ computers and other electronics; it was built by Patterson’s Custom Cabinetry in Ontario, Canada. Custom shelving houses two Samsung screens so the pair can watch news programs and conduct video conferences. The Herman Miller desk chairs are from WB Wood in New York.

est Palm Beach artist Alexander Krivosheiw has a background more colorful than a Lilly Pulitzer kaftan. He’s hopped from an apprenticeship in Greece with a marble sculptor, to interviewing with the creature department at George Lucas’ film studio, to working with kinetic engineers in California, to perfecting his craft in New York, and finally settling down in South Florida. “Moving to Florida and the beach has heavily influenced my work,” he says. “Brooklyn is incredibly progressive, but sand feels a lot better on your feet than concrete sometimes. Immediately, I felt my life shift gears and open up to new ideas and global opportunities.” While spending 17 years in Brooklyn’s art-centric Dumbo neighborhood, though, Krivosheiw studied under abstract metal sculptor Kevin Barrett, whose work heavily impacted his current aesthetic and taught him about the business side of having a career in art. Today, Krivosheiw’s sculptures also follow abstract figurative silhouettes. But despite using heavy, imposing materials of bronze and aluminum, the artist gives a breathy,

weightless movement to his forms, creating dancer-like shapes in fluid, liquid finishes. “It’s like old-school blacksmithing,” he says, “but instead of heating the metal, I work with it cold and hammer it out.” Fabricating 18-foot-tall sculptures and casting works that weigh up to 3 tons requires more than just cranes and forklifts—there’s a delicate creative process that precedes the heavy lifting. “Creating oversize organic forms usually starts with a smaller model or maquette,” he says. “I draw a design on paper, cut out the shapes and start forming them. If I like the way they twist and curve, I trace them out on sheets of metal and handbend and contort those shapes, and then weld all of the metal sheets together. What follows is hours upon hours of grinding with numerous tools until I think it’s complete.” Moore’s Canova, Krivosheiw’s current collection, pays homage to his icons Henry Moore and Antonio Canova, and is influenced by the Greek mythological love story of Cupid and Psyche, as well as his own relationships. “Passion, love, comedy and tragedy—to have the experience of love is a muse in and of itself,” he says. But perhaps the most romantic aspect of all is the permanence of the artist’s creations. “Metal allows me to create a language that will exist far beyond my lifetime,” Krivosheiw says. “I’m creating beauty for people and the world to enjoy, and that’s something we all need in our lives today.”

o say that designer Erin Paige Pitts had a vision for the ugly duckling Delray Beach house she zeroed in on as a long-sought-after second home for her family is a major understatement. “It was a derelict structure that nobody had lived in for years, a cinder-block house from the 1940s with ripped awnings, jalousie windows, overgrown vegetation and a guesthouse that looked like an army bunker,” she recalls. “But from the moment I walked in, I saw I could really do something with it.” The location, 1 mile from the ocean and within minutes of all that the community of Lake Ida had to offer, clinched the deal. What Pitts had in mind was the culmination of years of experience designing oceanfront homes for clients up and down the East Coast (she also has an office in Gibson Island, Maryland), as well as inspiration gleaned from the Puntacana Resort & Club designed by Oscar de la Renta in the Dominican Republic. “I like symmetry and balance and classicism within modern design,” she shares. “The plan for the house was to create a place that reflected those elements and also connected with the ocean and how our family wanted to live here.”

Architecturally, Pitts had the interiors covered, reconfiguring and opening up the spaces inside. “I’ve always been the type of designer who does base building through the finished project. I’m heavily rooted in the construction aspects of design,” she says—so much so that she served as the contractor for the majority of the project. But revamping the home’s exteriors and boosting its curb appeal required some additional expertise, and for that Pitts brought in Maryland-based residential designer Christopher L. Pattey. “The bones of the house were there enough to spin off of and do a renovation,” Pattey recalls. “We did working drawings by hand that aesthetically and dimensionally conveyed the design intent of a clean, crisp exterior with Dutch and Spanish influences that kept with the local vernacular and design guidelines. We coined the aesthetic as ‘Modern Caribbean.’ ” New freestanding foil walls were added to the main house and guesthouse to delineate the two and vertically accentuate the entries, “creating an iconic identity for the home,” Pattey adds. Undulating bay window bump-outs create visual interest, giving dimension to the facade, while pergolas and shutters provide shade and lend further reference to the island style.

In keeping with the owners’ indoor-outdoor lifestyle, the living room opens to the back lanai, which doubles as a dining and entertaining area. The flooring from Coral Stone USA flows outside, as well.

Seamlessly, Pitts also brought new life and functionality to the interiors, using furnishings and artwork to create both a more distinct sense of arrival and a more emphasized entry into the main living space beyond. Eschewing vivid colors for a more natural, neutral palette, she focused on layers and textures for everything from coral stone flooring inspired by the Puntacana Resort & Club to stain-resistant furniture and fabrics that are both elegant and durable. “Personally, I find the absence of color more soothing, and layers and texture interesting and calming,” she says. “And new products available now, like those by Sunbrella, make lightly colored interiors possible for a young family.” In the kitchen, which she refers to as “the center of everything,” the designer chose forgiving white quartz tops for the counters and monolithic waterfall island, which also features cerused-oak paneling; against the island resides

barstools by David Edward—a furniture manufacturing company owned by her husband’s family, through which Pitts custom-designed much of the home’s furnishings. The use of cerused oak was repeated in the custom table in the adjacent dining room, which is accented with custom wicker side chairs, again by David Edward. For the ample living room, which features ceilings heightened to 13 feet, Pitts paired custom upholstered pieces, including a plump oatmeal-colored chaise with striated pillows, with a glass-topped cerused-oak coffee table and a modern jute rug. Collapsible sliding doors reveal an outdoor living area, where a dining table on rollers may be positioned according to need when family and friends arrive. Private areas for Pitts and her husband, Gregory, as well as their three children, Scarlet, Jackson and Hutton, take on an especially restful feel. The master bedroom, which overlooks

the swimming pool, features a custom cerused-oak bed with a tufted headboard flanked with floating bedside tables that Pitts says free up the surrounding space and allow for placement of something textural below. The children’s rooms border on the playful, with colorful hot pink or blue accessories and details such as surfboards or fringed pillows. As with the exterior detailing, guesthouse interiors reflect the concepts Pitts used within the main house, albeit with subtle differences. The kitchen countertops are Corian versus quartz, for instance, and the flooring is porcelain plank (which looks like wood) versus stone. “It’s peaceful, functional and inviting,” Pitts says. And it served as the perfect place to set up a satellite office for her design business. Now fully settled into the home, Pitts and her family can see that it clearly represents her initial vision and goals. “It was very hard to see for a long time, but I had the ability to look at it for what it could be,” she says. “It checked all the boxes of what I wanted to achieve—a fantastically beautiful house where we want to spend time and that allows us to live in a family-friendly way. DESIGNER SHOW HOUSE This past November, Luxe Interiors + Design, the City of Beverly Hills and Friends of Greystone gathered to celebrate the VIP Preview of the Maison de Luxe designer show house at the historic Doheny Greystone estate in Beverly Hills, California. Over 500 VIP guests perused the reimagined rooms of this iconic estate while in sheer awe of its creativity, beauty and historic architecture. The Entertainologist, Lulu Powers, transformed the courtyard area into a decadent party atmosphere with dramatic lighting and luxurious furniture, exclusively provided by Frontgate. Guests enjoyed cocktails and assorted wines by Fantesca Estate & Winery indulged in delicious hors d’oeuvres. The evening was enhanced by a special award dedication to Luxe Editor in Chief Pamela Jaccarino by the mayor of Beverly Hills, Julian A. Gold, M.D., for her commitment to the restoration of the Doheny Greystone estate. World-class pianist Alexander Borghese provided entertainment throughout the evening by tickling the ivories of Steinway & Sons’ Special Collection Red Pops piano, which was front row center in the estate’s grand hall. Luxe extends its gratitude to the participating designers, sponsors, vendors and showrooms for their generous support of this project.

On November 12, Luxe Interiors + Design and Osborne and Little co-sponsored the grand opening of the new Ammon Hickson showroom during Fall Market at the Design Center of the Americas. Designer Nina Campbell gave the keynote opening presentation to kick off the event, which was attended by over 100 designers, as well as by Sir Peter Osborne, owner of Osborne and Little, who had traveled from London. Lunch was served followed by a book signing from Campbell.

The Gardens Mall was the runway of luxury this past January as 250 fashion-forward men and women gathered for the KidSanctuary Campus 7th Annual Luncheon & Fashion Show. A highlight of the event was the presentation of the distinguished 2015 Angel Volunteer of the Year award to Joe Fava, of Fava Design Group, who received a special gift from sponsor David Yurman. Proceeds went to the second phase of construction at KidSanctuary Campus, which includes an enrichment center, scheduled to break ground this spring.
