EDITOR’S LETTER
This issue is largely dedicated to homegrown design and to the independent makers and companies who are dialing into the made-in-America movement. To be sure, we live in a time where there are no clear-cut guidelines in design (perhaps there never were). Thanks to globalization, social media and the flood of visuals that pass our eyes daily, the sartorial choices we make for our homes are broad and vast, as they should be. Yet there is no denying the underlying current of old-school craftsmanship permeating the landscape. Call it “Americana Chic.” Stamp it “Made in America.” Today, homeowners are embracing all things artisanal, authentic and local. They want to know where the objects being brought into their homes are made and by whom. Makers in cities across the country (who we happily uncover in every issue of Luxe) are responding with thoughtfully crafted forms and materials that appeal to the new sensibility. Ultimately, of course, 21st-century design is a mix; a multicultural mash-up of ideas, with, perhaps, a pinch of Florence, a dose of Athens and, for good measure, a smattering of Detroit.

Writer / Washington, D.C. What made you want to become a writer? Curiosity. I love finding out why individuals think the way they do. I also enjoy stringing words together in what I hope is a painterly way that gives people understanding or lets them see something differently. If I could interview anyone, it would be… Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frank Lloyd Wright or Donald Judd. They were all revolutionaries with such unique visions and strong characters. Each of them led an interesting life, making iconic art and architecture in authentic and thoughtful ways. Is there anything intriguing you currently in the world of design? I love the way design continues to connect to nature with lots of glass, sunlight and simple, organic materials. Form and texture have evolved and, as a result, I feel that buildings and furniture today are much more dynamic. Photographer / New York
If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? I would love to have the opportunity to experience, and also photograph, James Turrell’s Roden Crater in Arizona. His work is all about light, space and how we as viewers perceive our surroundings. Most memorable Luxe assignment: A Hamptons house with the talented Jennifer Post. Light is a critical feature for every architectural or interiors shoot and, in this case, the changing weather conditions worked perfectly throughout our day—cloudy or sunny when we needed it! What type of architecture inspires you? Truly bespoke structures that elegantly solve problems and create energetic, livable spaces. I’ve had a longtime collaboration with architect Ali Tayar, and the houses he has designed—from Rhode Island to Beirut—embody this approach with refinement and finesse. Documenting these environments is both challenging and invigorating.

JOE FLETCHER
Photographer / San Francisco Biggest influences: Creatives in the worlds of art, photography and film, especially the work of Edward Burtynsky, Robert Polidori, Thomas Demand and Jeff Wall. Most exciting thing happening in design today: The amount of design that’s shared worldwide via social media. What type of architecture do you find most impactful? Quiet, minimalistic architecture—designs that let nature do the talking. If I could splurge on anything… It would be on a trip to Greece for my family so we can enjoy the turquoise sea and fried cheeses in the shade. Or a piece by Thomas Demand.
LINDA HAYES
Writer / Colorado Favorite Luxe interview: It was for a home on Vancouver Island. On an early meeting with the architect, Brian Hemingway, the owner of the house watched him take out a pen and just start drawing; he told me that observing him was such a magical part of the process. The image that conjured up has always stuck with me. My biggest design influence comes from… The process of architecture and its ability to transform the simplest idea into an elegant, functional structure. It reminds me that creativity is about both the journey and the destination. Who is the most fascinating person you’ve ever met? Charles Smith, owner of Charles Smith Wines in Walla Walla, Washington. He’s a bigger-thanlife personality, an intuitive thinker and a brilliant marketer. He led the recent design of his new Seattle winery, as well as the restoration of his midcentury house, with local architect Tom Kundig. Impressive!

or American furniture production, the yen for substantive, enduring quality— something commonplace only decades ago—has certainly reached a fever pitch in a day where genuineness in products is all but profuse. This nostalgic zeitgeist is ushering in a new wave of makers from various disciplines and perspectives, each bound by the desire to create in unique, original ways. “Design is the key,” says Sara Ossana of Warren, Rhode Island-based O&G Studio. “We’ve tapped into the idea that good design could save the continuity of craftsmanship.” Artist and furniture craftsman Ian Stell of New York City, known
LXCOM_Radar_Made_In_America_107.indd 108
for his highly unorthodox, mesmerizingly sculptural pieces, simply calls this widespread craving for authenticity an “American design renaissance.” “There’s a competition that has been intensifying,” he says, “and it’s pushing both quality and originality.” But what is American furniture design today? According to Brooklyn-based designer Asher Israelow, it is not bound by a style but rather an ethos. “There is no aesthetic correlation,” he says, “but it is aspirational; it’s forward-thinking. It’s reinventing the wheel. American designers are not necessarily bogged down by traditional craft techniques and apprenticeships that perhaps
our European counterparts are.” Israelow was studying architecture in school when on a whim, he took up woodworking while completing his thesis. “I’m entirely self-taught with wood. It became an obsessive hobby,” he says. Instead of becoming an architect, Israelow shifted gears to furniture because he believed it would provide more creative license. It is a circuitous route to furniture production that many young designers echo. Los Angeles-based Sabin Ousey was working in sales at Lawson-Fenning when he began making furniture for his own apartment as a creative outlet, prompting him to open his own company last January. His collection pays

homage to various viewpoints, from Paul McCobb to Spanish Colonial motifs. “America, particularly California, lacks centuries of history, so it gives us an opportunity to forge a new aesthetic,” says Ousey. “Rather than copying tradition, we are playing with historic motifs. That is how new genres and trends emerge.” New York interior designer Eddie Lee finds an egalitarian quality in today’s design scene. “Furniture makers are coming from all different backgrounds these days,” he says. “That’s a very American concept.” Stephen Antonson, the Brooklyn plaster master who references Giacometti and Gio Ponti in his sculptural line of work, thinks there is something
LXCOM_Radar_Made_In_America_107.indd 109
to this “design first” ingenuity that separates the successful American designer. “You can go to the design shows and say, ‘oh, there’s the guy that studied woodworking in school: he’s made the most amazing dovetail you’ve ever seen,’ but it’s rather uninspired design-wise,” he says. Like Israelow and Ousey, Antonson never studied plaster or furniture making in school. “I think there’s a streak of naiveté that allows good designers to do weird things, to be open to doing something backward. That’s where innovation happens. You’re not trying to make this boring, perfect thing that is like all the other boring, perfect things.” Ty Best of Chicago’s Caste Design,

None of this is to say that design traditions do not inform the current American furniture marketplace. Stickley, the pioneer of Mission and American Arts and Crafts furniture, has been around for over a century and has changed hands only once—from the original Stickley family to the Audi family in 1974—all the while employing their original, traditional woodworking techniques. That is not to say that the Manlius, New York-based company hasn’t propelled forward with every generation; Aminy Audi, the CEO of Stickley, credits this to the company’s diversification and a resistance to laurelresting. “We’ve added many different styles, from updated traditional to midcentury modern collections,” she says, adding, however, that it is the education of the consumer that matters most.

who formerly had a life and career in the fashion industry, also echoes the sentiment: “It sounds sort of Pollyanna, but I never knew about the possibilities of what could go wrong; I went into it head first without any hesitation.” Best’s refined, hand-hewn pieces, often in weighty materials like bronze and marble, are nationally distributed by Holly Hunt. He finds the isolation of rural Montana instead of community hotbeds like Brooklyn or Los Angeles to be the best source of unfiltered inspiration. “I think if I had more contemporaries opining on my designs, my work wouldn’t be so avant-garde,” he says.
1/21/16 6:04 PM
“When people understand the work and quality behind one of these pieces, they realize it is a lifetime investment. It is something they can pass on to a future generation.” O&G Studio is a contemporary example of modernizing a deeply ingrained American motif—the Windsor chair, whose roots stem from our earliest English colonists. Ossana and partner Jonathan Glatt electrify the genre with unexpected colors and proportions. “It’s something intrinsic to the American design community,” Ossana says, “our history allows us to question authority.” New York-based interior designer Brad Ford, who has become a kind of pied piper for independent craftsmanship, says, “The U.S. has become one of the most dynamic places for burgeoning design talent.” Last October, Ford held his second-annual Field + Supply fair in High Falls, New York. “Growing up in a small town in Arkansas and being a creative kid, I always loved going to the arts and crafts fairs,” he says. “It created a sense of community that is now so often lacking.” Ford decided to take this concept and elevate it by cherry-picking some of the best American designers across various disciplines, like Israelow, Apparatus and The Future Perfect. “With Field + Supply, we want the work to be serious but the experience to be anything but,” he says, adding, “It is important that design not be alienating. Consumers are more and more responding to the meaning and soul of something that is made by hand. It automatically separates itself from other mass-produced furnishings.” Ford is so confident in the shifting consumer paradigm that this fall, he opened Fair, a showroom at the New York Design Center highlighting elevated craft and design, representing many of the American designers he curated for Field + Supply. No matter the aesthetic, whether historically referential or avant-garde, the independent American furniture maker offers a quality that an outsourced big-box manufacturer simply can’t. “My clients want to understand and know the object that they have a personal relationship with; our local makers give us that,” says interior designer Celerie Kemble, who is deeply involved in keeping artisan traditions afloat—particularly with The Alpha Workshops, the nation’s only nonprofit organization providing creative HIV-positive individuals with industry-specific training and employment in the decorative arts. “People are increasingly caring about these pieces that they live with. Furniture is a very intimate thing, and so, too, should be the process.”

INFORMED BY HIS VORACIOUS APPETITE FOR TRAVEL, JIUN HO’S SCULPTURAL LINE OF FURNITURE CELEBRATES AN ANNIVERSARY.
Above: In his San Francisco studio, designer Jiun Ho stands near one of his No More Play tables, part of the Jiun Ho Collection V line and inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture of the same name.
For Jiun Ho, the San Francisco designer behind the furniture collection that bears his name, it all comes down to narrative. “I want to tell a story,” he says of the line, now celebrating its 15th anniversary. More often than not, the stories stem from his travels (he spends at least three months a year traveling the world, with recent stops in Kyoto and Sicily). “I take a lot of pictures to remind me of my experiences,” he notes. “There are times when I look at things and say ‘that could be a base for a dining table’ and there are times when I have to look at the photo, take a step back and create from there.” He points to the Maras chair in his newly introduced Jiun Ho Collection V as an example. “If you look at the lines of the chair and the stonework found at Machu Picchu and Sacsahuamán in Peru, you can see where the inspiration comes from.” The rest of the 16-piece collection similarly draws on Ho’s wide-ranging travels and experiences, as well as weaves together the narrative threads of previous introductions and makes graceful allusions to modern art. When first launching his business, though, the designer’s primary objective was not building a furniture brand, but rather to create unique spaces and user-friendly experiences. Then a client asked him if he would sketch some furniture. “I said, ‘Sure, I can give it a try,’ ” he recalls. “I came up with 35-40 pieces.” Connecting with a factory based in Southern California, Ho began manufacturing the pieces (most of which have been made in the United States ever since) and a brand was born. As the company has evolved, so has Ho’s approach. “We create the trends; we don’t let them drive us,” he says. “We focus on timeless, elegant shapes and forms and emphasize the tranquility, balance and pureness of the pieces. That, and attention to detail, is what’s important to us.”

HISTORY REPEATING AN ICONIC AMERICAN ESTATE SERVES AS A MUSE FOR WILDWOOD LAMPS & ACCENTS’ LATEST COMPENDIUM OF LIGHTING.
ARCHITECTURAL ANTIQUES: COURTESY AUTHENTIC PROVENCE.
WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAUDIA URIBE
Steeped in rich, historical references, the Biltmore Estate has been inspiring design and architecture since its reveal in 1895 by George Washington Vanderbilt II, grandson of famed industrialist and philanthropist Cornelius Vanderbilt. The 250-room French Renaissance château set upon 8,000 acres of pristine Ashville, North Carolina, land was designed as a country retreat for the family and remained so well into the 20th century. With certainly no shortage of inspiration to draw from—the house itself features over 100,000 square feet comprised of 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces— the artisanal team behind Wildwood Lamps & Accents turned to the estate as a muse for their most recent collection, receiving unparalleled access to the pieces that made this sprawling house a home. One such piece uncovered during the brand’s creative pursuit was an ancient cinnabar box belonging to George’s wife, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser Vanderbilt. Quickly recognizing the potential in the raised floral relief etching, the Wildwood team developed big plans for the motif: Aptly named after the lady of the house, the resulting Edith lamps (shown) are conveyed in three colorways that each take on a different persona. The Edith lamp in Red, for instance, reflects a traditional Asian-like feel, while the Powder Blue hue professes a more serene garden-esque vibe; Oyster proves to be the chameleon of the group, able to live in both modern and traditional environments. All flaunting brushed finishes, modern silhouettes and sleek drum shades, this versatile collection effusively transcends aesthetics, genres and eras—taking its place as a graceful classic with a firm foothold in today’s interiors.

ATHENS, GEORGIA-BASED CREATOR SUSAN HABLE LENDS HER DESIGN TALENT AND ARTISTIC VISION TO A CHIC NEW HOME COLLECTION. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY LACY MORRIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS BRANTLEY/WHITE ORANGE PRODUCTIONS
You are involved in a little bit of everything—painting, textiles, furniture, interiors. What led you to where you are today? I’ve always been an artist, and after working for several small businesses, mostly in jewelry, I realized that it was time to start my own design company. My sister, Katharine Hable Sweeney, and I launched Hable Construction in New York City in 1999, but in 2009, I decided to make the move to Athens. This was an eye-opening experience in that I realized how productive having my own studio was for my art. Describe your design aesthetic. I don’t play by the rules and I don’t discriminate where I turn to for inspiration—one day it’s Egyptian metalwork and the next it’s a Japanese kimono. I look to different cultures for inspiration in my color palettes and patterns. Tell us about your relationship with Hickory Chair. We started working together about six years ago on an exclusive fabric collection, and we’ve grown from there. Our common goals were to create quality products and make as many pieces domestically as possible. Why do you think it’s so important to keep production stateside? It is crucial for me to see the furniture being prototyped with my eyes on the product, and I work with the designers and engineers to make sure that all of the details that make the pieces special are being executed as they should. It’s such a luxury to see the hands that go into making each piece of our collection. We love the blue mirrored console for Hickory Chair’s sister company, La Barge (shown). It’s part of 25 new pieces we are adding to the original collection for the brand, and it is made with gilded wood and blue glass. I had seen that blue shade in a few midcentury pieces, but nothing current; we searched all over until we finally tracked it down abroad. I’m crazy about simple design that is also chic, and I think this geometric piece fits the bill and would be fantastic in a foyer. What’s next? An additional collection for Hickory Chair will come later this year. The pieces are incredible, with a lot of new silhouettes, and our focus continues to be on the sculptural aspect of each design. Visually, the new collection will tell a more transitional, modern story. Incorporating an artistic approach to design, I work hard to let the tiniest of details speak for the entire product.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL LEGEND AND DESIGN AFICIONADO LENNY KRAVITZ TEAMS UP WITH THE SKILLED CRAFTSMEN AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN HARDWARE TO CREATE A HARMONIOUS COLLECTION THAT HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY CARA GIBBS

Why hardware? I was attracted to the partnership with Rocky Mountain Hardware because of the high-quality products they produce—handcrafted hardware made with time-honored casting methods. It was a pleasure to work with all of the talented artisans that created these pieces. What was it about Beverly Hills’ Trousdale Estates that inspired you? I moved to Los Angeles when I was 11 years old and it was then that I was first exposed to midcentury modern design. The Trousdale area boasts amazing midcentury architecture created by such a diverse group of architects. What I loved about these
homes in contrast to the boxy apartments that I was accustomed to in New York was that they had clean lines, open floor plans and, in a lot of cases, an abundance of glass. They were like the glamorous homes I had seen in Hollywood movies. And this collection represents that. Tell us more about the artistry and techniques. At Rocky Mountain, they still cast and finish each piece by hand, which is so impressive; they really bring to life this high level of artistry. With Trousdale, we wanted to generate products that married that craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. The texture came out of wanting a more tactile experience with each piece, as well as serves as a way to visually emphasize the handcrafted nature. Give us a peek at your creative process. It’s a combination of sketching, looking at historical references and listening to music. “Hollywood Swinging” by Kool & the Gang was definitely inspirational in making this line. Finishes can truly transform a piece—taking something from traditional to totally rock and roll. Take us through the finishes. Trousdale will be offered in all of the Rocky Mountain finishes. Personally, I will be using the bronze light finish on a home I’m building in the Bahamas.

Lenny Kravitz has made no efforts to conceal his passion for interiors—establishing New Yorkbased Kravitz Design and producing several successful product lines. His latest collaboration with Rocky Mountain Hardware is yet another notch on his already-impressive design belt. In tune with both the artist’s modern aesthetic and love for classic design, the Rocky Mountain brand was more than prepared to bring Kravitz’s ideas to life. The resulting Trousdale collection combines a powerful ensemble of textures and shapes that culminates in a truly harmonious and showstopping array of hardware. We sat down with Kravitz as he discussed his latest collection.

Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, the artistic duo behind Chicago-based Luftwerk, have created a site-specific series of art installations, entitled solarise: a sea of all colors, at the Garfield Park Conservatory. Created in response to the conservatory itself, and with its collection of plants in mind, the installation, on view through September 22, pays homage to landscape architect Jens Jensen, who originally designed the historic structure. Five distinctive installations—The Beacon, Portal, Florescence, Seed of Light and Prismatic—encourage viewers to interact with color, light and nature all while illuminating the area’s natural settings and highlighting Jensen’s design and the architectural importance of the building and grounds. garfieldconservatory.org; luftwerk.net
BLUEPRINT N°9 WALTON
Sophistication and elegance reign supreme in the latest residential building in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, where Jim Letchinger, president of JDL Development, has devised a timeless structure with everything needed for convenient, present-day living. Within the 35-story tower, each of the 66 condominium homes (featuring two to five bedrooms each) will boast exquisitely designed kitchens, marble bathrooms with heated floors, expansive living spaces and private terraces. Other modern amenities have been thoughtfully considered, too, and include an indoor lap pool, hot tub, steam room, sauna, massage room, fitness facility, around-the-clock valet parking, guest apartment suites, a covered dog run and private wine storage. The luxury accommodations will be completed in late 2017. 9walton.com

Colorful, sculptural and handcrafted in the United States, Aaron Baigelman and Heather Ahrens’ new line of practical glassware is turning heads. “We draw inspiration from different sources,” Ahrens says of the Chicago duo’s striking vessels, cocktail glasses, wine glasses and carafes (which change seasonally as they’re continuously refined). “I’m inspired by smaller, exceptional fashion designers and Aaron has studied with some of the best glassblowers in the world. Function was also key when creating our glassware series.” Sold in 10 stores across the country, the line is also on view by appointment only in the pair’s Humboldt Park studio. baigelmanglass.com

LYNDSEY GLASENER
Tell us a little about the new collection. What was the inspiration behind the line? I used to be a fashion designer and have always had an affinity for materials. As a designer today, I like to create spaces that are more restrained and that just feel good. For this collection, I merged the two, designing a classic tile collection that’s understated with softer shades for palettes that complement each other; it’s a very modest line without a lot of crazy colors or shapes. Most of my interior designs are very reminiscent of older times, and these tiles project that same idea. Why did you want to create a cement tile collection? I love the fact that cement tiles age really gracefully and change with time. It’s as if they get more beautiful as they develop a patina, which is very much in line with my design aesthetic. What’s next on your radar? Our design studio is currently working on several new restaurants that will be unveiled soon.
How does this collection differ from other players in the current Sabine Hill line? It’s a solid cement tile with faux-grout lines that make each tile appear to be part of a larger mosaic. We handmade metal molds for it to work, which was an extremely difficult and complicated process, but this innovative technique gave us a result that showcases the range of what we can do. What made you want to collaborate with Karen on a tile collection? I have always loved Karen’s work and style, which is raw and edgy yet flows so nicely. The idea evolved after the two of us talked about it for some time. Karen and her team are fabulous; they understood the process, and we were able to move things along quickly. So what’s in store for Sabine Hill in the upcoming year? We just finished designing 12 new patterns in collaboration with San Diego-based designer Paul Schatz that are headed to the Coverings trade show in April.

Inspired by a traditional French brasserie, Karen Herold, principal of Chicago’s Studio K, and Lyndsey Glasener, owner of Wisconsin-based cement tile company Sabine Hill, teamed up to create The Brasserie Collection—a new 18-pattern tile line that can be used both indoors and out and is infused with classic mosaic patterns and contemporary color palettes. Here, the duo share their insight into creating this modern and elegant surface collection. studiokcreative.com; sabinehill.com

NICOLE HOLLIS, SAN FRANCISCO Trademark: I’m all about simplicity with an edge: black, texture, cut and form. Morning routine: Up at 5:30 a.m., I check online auctions, design blogs, The New York Times and email. Post bath and meditation, it’s family time with my husband and 4-year-old; no better way to start the day. Dream office: I surround myself with beautiful objects in my studio, but it’s constantly changing—the smallest thing can inspire. We have huge windows overlooking the San Francisco skyline, and the sunsets are spectacular. Desktop items: My tools of the trade (color pencils, scratch paper and drawings), a rusty horseshoe, brass door hardware and a rock from a trip to Hawaii. Personal stationery: Custom letterpress with original artwork by Marta Elise Johansen. Mood board: Torn pages from fashion and art magazines and auction catalogues. On trend: Eighties fashion is back and inspiring interiors. I’m hooked on neon, shredded and studded accents.

HALLIE HENLEY, HOUSTON Trademark: My style is glamorous with a modern twist. Morning routine: Cuddling with my 9-month-old daughter, Scarlett. If she has her bottle and I have my coffee, I’ve already started off the day happy. Desktop items: My MacBook Pro, Kayce Hughes artwork I picked up from Rivers Spencer in New Orleans, a Moleskine sketchbook where I keep my notes and my father’s Montblanc pen. Personal stationery: Number Four Eleven in Savannah and Lavender & Mint in Houston. Mood board: Mine is a result of falling down the Instagram rabbit hole, and it’s where you’ll find work from artist Alexis Walter and architect Bill Ingram, to name a few. Never too many… Monogrammed linens. Can’t live without… My red lipstick. Guilty pleasure: Fabric. Sources of inspiration: Vintage out-of-print design books, estate sales and old classic movies—I can definitely credit Auntie Mame as being a push toward a life in design. On trend: Chintz is the new ikat. And wallpaper (everywhere!).

Mood board: Clippings of new artists and collaborations, as well as personal photos from my travels (picturesque landscapes, striking outfits I see on the street). Never too many… Pairs of shoes. Can’t live without… Chicago pizza. Guilty pleasure: Chicago pizza. On trend: I’m loving rooms painted entirely in one color—walls, trims, window frames, all of it.

Displaying restraint… Kara Mann’s benches are cool and current yet also possess a timelessness to them that isn’t over-designed. The main lines of the piece… Are defined in solid black, providing a frame to emphasize the natural wood grain of the base; from a creative perspective I think it’s brilliant and beautiful. The attention to detail and beautiful finishing… Is an example of Baker’s trademark of uncompromising standards towards well-made furnishings. Luxury is a by-product of superior quality and sophisticated design. I always examine… Circulation, scale and the language spoken between pieces when creating areas conducive to conversation. Kara has done a wonderful job… Designing a versatile, clean, perfectly proportioned line, and I am excited to use her pieces in our clients’ spaces.

I find this collection to be… Confident, playful and feminine. It has a timeless Hepburn-like quality without alienating those who lean toward masculine design. I’m at my creative best when… I am pushing the boundaries, and Kate Spade’s new furniture line does just that, apparent in the bow tie back detailing—a distinct motif of the company reinterpreted for an instant-classic dining chair. I am attracted to the bold… Example of Kate Spade’s ability to marry two of their most signature elements together: bows and polka-dots. The chairs embody… The brand’s embrace on the interiors world, displaying both formality and playfulness alongside masculine and feminine notes. The sweep of the legs is very distinctive… And the black-and-white polka-dot pattern speaks to confidence and individuality.

Fashion, design, art and architecture… Are all variations on a creative theme. Some of the best furnishing collections are born from fashion icons, often causing a tidal wave of symbiotic brand revival. I absolutely love the Hooker-Rowley collaboration for that exact reason—an unexpected brand pairing that stops you in your tracks. The Fleur de Glee bench is… Unmistakably Rowley in pattern yet shows off the refined upholstery elements for which Hooker is known. Add in the modern lines and jewelrylike metalwork detailing and you’re poised for perfection. As a fluent Francophile… I love the name and inherent playfulness associated with the bench. Whimsical upholstery meets modern metal—it’s the juxtaposition that makes us stop and ponder. Interiors should not exist on a single axis… But reflect the many moods and facets of personalities. Without creativity… Design becomes predictable and expected. Here, I’m so attracted to the hard, modern silhouette coupled with the floral, feminine pattern.

Every single thing… About the Morehead chair is for me. From its hefty, almost updated Parsons-style lines to its somewhat Postmodern personality and early 1980s appeal, it is as much a comfy spot to sit in as it is sculptural art. Silhouette is important… For the overall balance of a room and area of perspective. What’s interesting about these chairs is how strong and grounded their profiles are. Since they are so straight, they work beautifully with curved pieces, like say a Tulip table. Locally made forever pieces… Are what everyone is after these days. Hands down, these pieces are new and now, all while combining a classically architectural frame with a perhaps retro-style fabric choice that speaks to today’s lifestyle. The best way to describe my aesthetic… Is transitional with an edge, which fits to perfection with many of the pieces offered by Highland House. The lines are clean and draped in classicism, but the textiles are fit for modern-day tastes—the perfect mash-up of timeless and fresh.

Softness and warmth to a stark modern space or bring a maximalist room a sense of calm modernity. Where design really gets fun and memorable... OUTSIDE THE LINES COLOR REENERGIZES THE HOME’S MOST-FREQUENTED ROOMS FOR STUNNING SPACES THAT SHUN TRADITION AND DARE TO SHAKE THINGS UP. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA
Typically, when whipping up a confectionary masterpiece, you don’t want to break the mold; it’s a vital part of keeping those baked goods looking their best. But that’s where following form in the kitchen should end: The best kitchen design is equal parts functional and unexpected, which is why incorporating color is becoming such an important element for a truly remarkable space. So, while crisp white cabinetry in both the kitchen and bathroom isn’t going anywhere soon, mixing in bold hues—whether it’s on the island and appliances in the kitchen or in the form of a statement-making wallpaper in the powder bath—is fast becoming the not-so-secret ingredient to cooking up spaces that will stand the test of time. Here, we celebrate the color-happy palettes and products that are taking the workhorse rooms of the home from bland to beautiful.
HAUTE DISH TAYLOR BORSARI
Designer Taylor Borsari channels Morocco in a Coronado, California, kitchen that dazzles with heavy doses of color, pattern and glammed-out gold. taylorborsari.com Share your design vision. The house was a historic remodel, and the kitchen was a blank space aside from the blue La Cornue oven. My first goal was to integrate the color of the range so it felt like part of an overall story rather than a random dash of color. I think many are nervous to jump into a bold range choice, but this is proof that it can be done without being too overwhelming.
Best ways to introduce pattern into the kitchen? I love patterned backsplashes! This is an area where you can really set the tone for a kitchen, and it’s an obvious area you can have a lot of fun with. Even tonal or monochromatic patterns can add interest. In this kitchen, we also added the carved island, which gave us a nice, ethnic twist to help balance the backsplash, as well as the very colorful range.
COM_LX6_TheLook_KitchenBath_186-194.indd 186
How can color revive and freshen up a kitchen? Color is a great addition to everyday life. White is classic and timeless, of course, but it is also a very safe option. This kitchen is a bit of a hybrid of pattern and color, and I think it is so much more interesting as a result. Plus, as more spaces are openplan these days, embracing a little more color in kitchens allows you to connect rooms more cohesively.

Featuring a hidden pull-down wand, the Solna faucet makes a big impression with its articulating arm and fashion-forward finish. brizo.com
It’s no surprise that open shelving continues to be wildly popular in today’s kitchen, but for lovers of color, this modern design device is even more effective. Stacking brightly colored bowls, glasses, mugs and ceramics can infuse happy hues into the most neutral of kitchens, making it the perfect solution for homeowners who are looking to play it a little safer but still want to incorporate an element of fun and whimsy into their rooms. This vignette from designer Emily Henderson shows that there are no rules when it comes to styling your shelves; just don’t be shy to share your favorite pieces, regardless of color scheme or theme. stylebyemilyhenderson.com

It’s about as personal as you can get in the kitchen. snaidero-usa.com

While Duravit’s L-Cube vanity, designed by Christian Werner, takes its cues from one of geometry’s simplest shapes, it is far from ordinary. This serene vanity space by Toronto designer Anne Hepfer is transformed with color. Benjamin Moore’s Coventry Gray on the cabinetry acts as both statement-maker and pretty neutral against the softer walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Stonington Gray. “The cabinetry is tailored but feminine, with some round detailing to maintain traditional character but in a cleaner more current design,” explains Hepfer. Far from traditional, though, is what she sees as the next big thing in powerful palettes: “I have a feeling that gray is here to stay for a while, so we’re popping spaces with bold hits of color—fuchsia, canary yellow, teal—and, of course, black and white accents. I’m loving the play of contrast and unexpected combinations!” annehepfer.com

A CLOSER LOOK AT WHAT MAKES THE KITCHEN AND BATH SOME OF OUR FAVORITE ROOMS IN THE HOME. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA
MADE TO ORDER Kitchens and bathrooms spent the first part of their lives inside the home hidden away, separated from the pretty living and family rooms where all the action was happening. Today, though, the kitchen and bath are front and center, with gorgeous new options that transform the rooms into gallery-like spaces—with faucets that double as works of art, tiles that look like they belong in a museum, and lots of great new technology that ensures these spaces are as hardworking as they are good-looking. On the following pages, Luxe examines all the ways the kitchen and bath have been transformed for modern living.

MATERIAL MAGIC For this handsome Santa Monica, California, kitchen by architect May Sung, materials take center stage to great effect thanks to the wonderful grain and texture of the reclaimed wood on the island and perimeter cabinetry, which contrast powerfully with the limestone backsplash tiles from Walker Zanger. “We wanted to create an oasis that is masculine and bring in natural material, without looking like a lumberjack’s cabin,” says Sung. “All of the material had to be genuine and true to that vision.” gsubuda.com

Sure, the classic French press has its own rustic charm, but nothing says, “I’m serious about my coffee,” like a brew station that can deliver rich espresso, sweet lattes and foamtopped cappuccinos at the touch of a button. A backsplash represents the founding principles of a kitchen: It should be both beautiful and functional. But, in the case of the New Ravenna tile backsplash in this kitchen by Los Angeles-based designer Kishani Perera, it goes one further: being totally statement-making. Luckily, the vast expanses of white on the cabinetry make it, and the warm, chevron-patterned wood flooring that accompanies it, visually stimulating but not overwhelming. kishaniperera.com

Touches of gold and brass are slowly taking the place of chrome and polished nickel in contemporary bathrooms, thanks to their easy warmth and timeless aesthetic. In this space by designer Casey Keasler, from the creative Portland studio of Casework, brass faucets from Kohler join mirrors—replicas of 1930s French wall consoles from Restoration Hardware—in creating a can’t-look-away sink area. The golden hues are the perfect complement to the cabinetry’s bold teal color. “The brass helped create a certain richness,” says Keasler. “I like a clean, quiet space where everything is done for a reason and not because of a trend.” casework.it

More than a decade ago Susan Brunstrum launched Sweet Peas Design as a way to combine her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit—and she’s never been more excited and inspired. “From a one-woman firm in my home, I have nurtured Sweet Peas Design into an award-winning, full-service studio with a team of six and a discerning clientele,” she says. “Our LivableLuxe style has become known as ‘the little black dress of design.’ It is relaxed, elegant, comfortable and refined, the perfect fit for any occasion.” Professionalism, creativity and attention to detail are at the heart of the Sweet Peas Design studio. “We believe that design is a process, not a product. It is our journey with our clients that leads to the best results,” she says.
“
A home should tell the story of those who live there.

How would you describe the personality of your business? Like me, Sweet Peas Design is confident, überorganized, instinctive, solution driven, tuned in to our clients and naturally creative. Who or what inspires you most? Art, architecture and nature inspire me, but anything that touches my senses has the power to move me. And of course, Coco Chanel for her style and business sensibility. What is one thing your clients would be shocked to know about you? I have always wanted to go on a cattle drive out West. When my two children were younger, we visited a dude ranch several times. We loved horseback riding and cattle penning. Plus, who can resist a good-looking cowboy?

What projects have brought you the most satisfaction and why? Our philanthropic work. My team and I designed the living room and family room for a Waukegan-based family for NBC/LX.TV’s George to the Rescue program. The look on the father’s face at the “reveal” brought tears to my eyes. What are your favorite hobbies? Fashion, touring art galleries and boxing with my trainer. I love the rhythm of it, and I’ve developed a mean uppercut. You want me in a dark alley with you if things get rough!

TRENDS IN RENOVATION ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, BUILD + OUTDOOR LIVING The design-minded and novices alike are reaching similar conclusions when it comes to updating their homes: quality, utility and comfort prevail. Formal living may have lost some of its allure in lieu of more open, welcoming spaces that exude hearth, togetherness and camaraderie; and less, in regard to square footage, is sometimes more—when done right. Read on and discover what the experts are saying about the latest trends in residential renovations.

GENSBURG TONIOLO HARTING ARCHITECTS This newly built custom home in Michigan’s Harbor Country exemplifies the thoughtful blend of classical architecture with modern interpretations, vernacular and materials.
Some of the industry’s most esteemed professionals were asked about the state of residential remodeling in regard to design and lifestyle. What we learned is that the two are analogous: how people live, day to day, directly reflects their interiors and exteriors. Homeowners who love to entertain are among the biggest influencers, creating a new niche in the design industry—from fully equipped outdoor kitchens and comfortable outdoor entertaining areas to sprawling interior kitchen islands to open, family room-style spaces.

outdoor kitchens, garden elements (pergolas, arbors), patios/terraces and vegetable/potager gardens. As for the environmental improvements to landscape design, Milani explains the merits of permeable paving, among other philosophical and methodical changes within the industry. “Hardscape materials, such as brick pavers, traditionally were impermeable; water would run off and overtax our storm sewers and increase erosion and flooding. Using permeable paving allows water to pass directly through joints within the paving,” he says. “In general, our clients request beautiful landscapes that perform well without the use of additional fertilizers, pesticides and maintenance. Sustainability not only reduces overall cost but also reduces the carbon footprint to the environment.”

and classic design elements to the client who desires a unique and custom-finished home. “At Ilene Chase Design (ICD), we challenge ourselves with each project to provide a custom, high-end look while always being conscious of the function of the space.” As a seasoned interior designer who has worked on numerous remodels, Chase reflects on her personal experiences with clients who are about to begin the endeavor. “I sit down with my client for as much time as they need to review their reasons for the remodel. I want to make sure that every possible wish-list item is covered,” she says. “I am upfront with my clients about how to update their home to the current trends of building before they finalize their plans.” For the many homeowners who seek a small refresher before committing to a large-scale renovation, Chase recommends a new color palette on the walls or updated light fixtures. “Paint can be a drastic game changer. It can add drama or lighten up a space; it can make an old house feel new. My other great quick fix is lighting. This can completely change the style of your home.”
SMART CHANGES For Orren Pickell, president and CEO of the prominent Northfield-based home building firm Orren Pickell Building Group, most renovations are gradual, beginning with the kitchen

or master bathroom and evolving to other spaces or elements within the home. The North Shore’s residentially rich communities continue to undergo gradual improvements, mostly in the realm of modernizing interiors of its homes to accommodate changes in lifestyles and design preferences. “There are a lot of renovations happening on the North Shore,” Pickell says. “I have found that once the kitchen and master bathroom are finished, we focus on some of the new trends in floor plans, which often leads to tearing down walls and making rooms bigger and more functional for the family.” The builder of more than four decades notes his clients are making greater commitments to their homes, opting for renovations that adhere to “aging in place” principles. “Many of our homeowners are now planning to stay in their homes as long as possible. This means that we’re designing and building homes for homeowners who plan to grow old in that home, and because of this, we have been building the master bedrooms on the first floor, making doorways and hallways wheelchair accessible and creating multipurpose spaces designed for varying uses as the family ages,” he explains. As for the “less-is-more” movement—eliminating nonessential rooms—Pickell has seen an increase among his clientele for such floor plans. “The whole concept is that homeowners want to have a smaller home, with every room being used, at minimum, on a weekly basis, resulting in less maintenance for the long term,” he says.
DESIGN WISDOM Nearly two decades of industry experience, in addition to a thriving design firm in Lake Geneva, has afforded Philip Sassano a unique perspective into the art and science of remodeling a home. “The best piece of advice I can give is to assemble a dedicated team early in the process. Unfortunately, sometimes the team isn’t assembled early enough, which leads to bad financial decisions, wasted time and creative opportunities missed,” he says. “When it comes to remodeling or new construction, I advise clients to have a significant number of lifestyle discussions with their designbuild team before they break ground or begin demolition.” Sassano’s company, The Design Coach, applies its design talent to a wealth of projects—from large additions to small upgrades room by room and everything in between. A strong emphasis from clients is to make the best use of living space—inside and out—with a focus on versatility and longevity. “We’ve seen an increased priority on no wasted

space or unused rooms. Designing interiors with a kind of functional flexibility is important,” he says. “Clients know they may only get one chance to remodel certain spaces: They want to know that the rooms can evolve with their lifestyle.” As for less construction-centered interior changes, Sassano delivers sage advice to readers: “We like to

think fabric finishes a room. However, for a big impact, look at your ceilings and floors. Sometimes a little applied design on those areas can completely change the identity of a space.”
ENDURING ELEMENTS Drew Daniels of Sexton Development, a luxury custom home builder and general contractor in Lake Bluff, admits to being a little “old school” when it comes to trends and styles. His preference for traditionalism has resulted in a greater sense of timelessness in the homes he builds and remodels. He makes a strong case against “of-the-moment” design. “At some point, pretty much anything that is new and trendy is going to look outdated. Everything in the ’80s looks like it was built in the ’80s, and everything in the ’90s looks like it was built in the ’90s,” he says. “You can almost never go wrong with a classic design.” With a large repertoire of work throughout Chicago’s North Shore communities, Sexton Development has observed and responded to significant

changes in standards of living, starting with sustainable building. “Without a doubt, the most substantial change in the industry is the integration of home automation and home control solutions. Younger homeowners expect it, and older homeowners should really consider it for the future resale of their homes,” Daniels says. However, he is quick to point out that the backbone of home automation systems is a strong network and a reliable Wi-Fi signal, which he feels is an afterthought on too many projects. Daniels goes on to say, “With the sheer number of handheld devices and new Wi-Fi-accessible home control products being offered to

“There are some wonderful new products that have been created to make homes beautiful without costing a fortune,” enthuses Michelle Rohrer-Lauer, owner of the esteemed Chicago interior design firm Michelle’s Interiors. In her robust career as a designer, Rohrer-Lauer has discovered myriad ways to enhance a home’s interior and has remained at the forefront of innovations within the industry. “Tile companies have created flooring that looks and feels better than ever before. Materials are more diverse, and so many companies have become more conscious of using recycled product. Technology has become part of our clients’ necessity, and because of that, we incorporate it into the design of every space we do.” For Rohrer-Lauer, whose work reveals a clean sophistication, simultaneous comfort and luxury is always an objective. “Our clients want their home to be cozy with clean lines that reflect their lifestyle. They want fabulous fabrics and artsy influences while still being in a very livable space where they can curl up with their legs on the sofa, play a game with their children or enjoy a glass of wine,” she explains. This very aesthetic, or more so, lifestyle, is one in which Rohrer-Lauer thrives. Her interiors speak to a contemporary audience—regardless of age—that appreciates streamlined, elegant design infused with high practicality. Her experiences in remodels prompt her to advise homeowners to consider the luxuries too, which often are unknown to them at the time of the renovation. “Clients may not be aware of the products that can improve their home, such as adding heated floors, heated shower seats, motorized window treatments, accent lighting and attention to the mud rooms.”

FAMILY-FOCUSED RENOVATIONS Lynch Construction Corp. in Lake Bluff, under the auspices of Jeff and Joan Lynch, has meticulously transformed many residences to accommodate today’s shifts in lifestyle and people’s overall engagement with their homes. The firm was actually founded to fill a void in the North Shore for this purpose: to bring quality craftsmanship and design to the classic, turn-of-the-century homes that need updates, additions and beyond. “These houses cannot be served by Home Depot or your average contractor,” Joan says. “Instead, a new type of company was needed:
limited to just the interior of the house,” she notes. The Lynches also remark on the subtle but still impactful infusion of modern materials and accents into many of the area’s long-existing residences. “Old is new again; the appreciation and reimagining of midcentury modern houses is really exciting,” Jeff shares. “We are seeing an interest to revitalize and update these forgotten houses through the addition of adding warm materials (natural woods and stone) to the modern palette of glass and steel. The homes are livable and cutting-edge while being steeped in history and culture.” WRITTEN BY DEVON ROUSH
a construction company that embraced architects, project managers, carpenters and cabinetmakers. This has provided us unprecedented control of quality and budget.” While the Lynch Construction team notes the uniqueness of each home and client, there is a collective movement toward expansive gathering spaces. “The embrace of ‘living’ spaces tends to be most enduring. This could be a large kitchen with an ample seated island or a true family room,” she explains. “People more than ever want a space that they can enjoy with their friends and family. Entertaining is important.” One trend the Lynches have noticed is the extension of these gathering spaces into the backyard, as people now more than ever have a strong desire to embrace their whole site. “We have designed and built many screened-in porches and outside patios with built-in fireplaces and seating walls. Renovations are no longer

esigner and self-professed Francophile Wendy Labrum doesn’t have to go very far to get her Paris fix. In fact, she doesn’t even have to leave the house. That’s because Labrum’s home, a classical-style residence in Bucktown she and her husband, Brandon, recently purchased and renovated, displays dramatic arrangements of both vintage and contemporary French furnishings that—like the effortlessly chic and iconic way French women dress—are as casual as they are sophisticated and as edgy as they are timeless. “I believe that good design will always be influenced by French design,” Wendy says. “Probably because they’ve been doing it longer.” Wendy, Brandon and their young daughter had previously been living in a condominium near Wrigley Field when they decided a change of scenery was needed. “We knew our family was going to keep growing and that we’d eventually need more space,” says Brandon. And
CH_LX35_Pedine_234-247.indd 237
the five-bedroom house they ended up moving into met all of their current and future requirements. For example, the couple, who now have three young children, can easily access the area’s vibrant offerings. “It’s a great walking neighborhood and has a bit of a New York SoHo feel,” Brandon says. “Plus, it’s family-friendly yet still provides great nightlife, restaurant and shopping options.” The house offered another convenience, too: simple architecture. “It was a blank canvas,” Wendy says. “I was able to add architectural elements and create spaces with personality.” In many of the rooms, Wendy designed cased entries, as well as built-in bookshelves for the family room. “I heightened all of the doorways to add drama and incorporated panel molding throughout,” she says. “I love pre-war millwork and wanted to give the house character.” In the kitchen, Wendy started from scratch. “I completely gutted it,” says the designer, who replaced a window that previously looked to the neighbor’s house with solid wall
The living room features a Reagan Hayes-designed sofa with a Bergamo Fabrics textile from Donghia, French stools upholstered in leopard print by Kravet and a vintage armchair dressed in a Rose Cumming striped silk from Dessin Fournir. space, which now displays upper cabinetry and a hood. “There was plenty of natural light without that window,” she says. “Closing it up allowed me to have a larger island and a bigger range.” Wendy also designed a built-in banquette for the breakfast area and covered an adjacent wall with Calacatta marble tile. “Everything we installed was top-notch,” says general contractor Abel Marin. “Wendy’s design made the house so inviting. You walk in and it feels like home.” For however fine the furnishings are, they’re also relaxed. It’s a dichotomy that’s not easily achieved and a concept that makes both the French style and Wendy’s design so successful. “I love glamour,” she says. “But the home also had to be livable.” Therefore, the designer covered a chesterfield in the media room with treated ivory leather that can be easily wiped clean and upholstered two vintage Louis-style chairs in the living room with charcoal cottonvelvet. “Velvet is durable,” she says. “I chose fabrics that look gorgeous but can also handle wear and tear.” In the entry, a vintage French stool features a black leathercovered seat cushion. “My kids sit on that stool to put their shoes on,” Wendy says. “The leather is original, but it’s weathered so I don’t have to worry about it.” In addition, much of the furniture that isn’t vintage was custom-made for comfort and to accommodate the entire family. For example, because Brandon is 6 feet 5 inches tall, deep sofas were needed. “I wanted pieces with the right shapes and scales,” says Wendy of the custom furnishings. Throughout the design, lighter colors are tempered with splashes of black, smooth and soft textures mingle near more rustic ones, and the historical French furniture—some of which she had shipped directly from Paris—keeps good company with notable contemporary pieces. “I love mixing periods and blending old with new,” Wendy says. “It makes a home feel well-collected and the contrasting of the colors and textures gives a room individuality.” In the living room, Wendy offset a contemporary sofa covered in lavender cotton-sateen with a vintage chair 238 / LUXESOURCE.COM

upholstered in black-and-white-striped silk and a pair of antique Maison Baguès floor lamps topped with black shades. A vintage Louis Philippe mirror above the custom fireplace surround plays off a modernist Lucite-and-brass coffee table. Opposites attract in the family room, too, where a contemporary sofa joins a vintage French armchair upholstered in black leather and a braided jute rug. Outside in the rear yard, Wendy designed a massive pergola framed by bright white drapery fabric. Boxwoods in planters dot the gray-stained decking and there’s an acute feeling of being in a storied garden somewhere deep in France. “I love our outdoor space,” Brandon says. “It’s become the backdrop for weekend breakfasts with the kids, grilling with friends, lazy Sunday afternoons and impromptu dance parties.” As the home was completed, Wendy soon realized she might be even more of a Francophile than she thought. While the French are indeed masters of style, they also invented the phrase joie de vivre, which means joy of living, and it seems the designer achieved two goals for her family when she reimagined the interiors of their new home—good design and great joy. “In my ideal world, I’ll one day have a beautiful pre-war apartment in Paris that I can fill with antiques and contemporary pieces,” she says. But for now, to Wendy and her family, this house is pretty perfect. 240 / LUXESOURCE.COM

eing the new kid on the block isn’t always easy, but for wallpaper designer Erin Chlaghmo, it’s a role that she is ready to play. This is largely due to her time assisting other designers with their textile production, as well as her own experience as a screen printer. “Having that knowledge really helped to inform my designs,” says Chlaghmo, who owns Chicago-based Relativity Textiles—a company name that was inspired by Albert Einstein’s research and his theory of relativity, being that Chlaghmo’s initials just happen to be EMC. Launched this past fall, Chlaghmo’s wallpaper— sold locally through Solid + Pattern, as well as Supply in Austin, Alt for Living in New York and Style Revolutionary in Australia—features four patterns and 21 colorways that illustrate both the designer’s knack for scale and space and her love of global textiles; she spends every summer in Morocco and counts Japan, Iran and India as places of influence. “There’s a history behind what inspires me,” says Chlaghmo, who categorizes her wallcoverings as a product of her path in the visual arts. While working toward her master’s degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006, Chlaghmo was “painting and making collages,” she says, “and really trying to make sense of my life experiences.” Using any available medium, she eventually found her voice through textiles. That voice was aided by mentor Christine Tarkowski, whom Chlaghmo helped with screen printing fabrics for a show at the Chicago Cultural Center. Additionally, while assisting artist Carlos Rolón to recreate his childhood living room at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, she was able to form a relationship with Artisan Handprints, who now produce her intricate wallcoverings. “Designing wallpaper is an extension of my practice as a painter and screen printer,” she says. “Pattern carries such a strong cultural significance, and whether putting it in a museum or a home, it creates conversations.” According to Chlaghmo, being hired to produce Rolón’s wallpapers was a pivotal launching point for her career. Other factors have influenced Chlaghmo’s work, too. For example, her father—a math teacher—taught her about tessellations, a mathematical practice of making puzzle pieces that repeat infinitely. This collision between math and art runs throughout her designs, often congruent with her love of global history. “It’s this understanding of how things are made that informs how a pattern is built,” she says. “My love of this process stimulates each design and also my devotion to elevating other cultures.”

A gabled roof from Big C Lumber and a classic wood-siding façade temper this cottage’s steel architectural detailing to help it blend in with the neighboring homes. Built of steel shipping containers, this structure was conceived by interior designer and homeowner Susan Fredman, along with architect Terri Crittenden and general contractor John Crittenden.
F
amed for its pristine beaches and picturesque cottages, Michigan’s Harbor Country is a quick 90-mile ride from Chicago and consists of a cluster of charming towns that hug Lake Michigan. Interior designer Susan Fredman has built and furnished a few dozen homes in Harbor Country, including her own weekend retreat in the area’s Union Pier community. A fine artist by training, Fredman considers all the places she designs like one of her paintings, yet the home she completed for herself and her partner, Terri Hawley, took Fredman’s artistic skills in an inventive new direction given the home’s noteworthy construction material: steel shipping containers. “It’s new to my palette,” the designer says of the material, which she mixed with the more traditional wood, concrete and glass, “but I felt that I could take a more creative license in my own home.” Fredman decided on building a shipping container home when she saw one years ago and was smitten with its industrial vibe, sustainable attributes and strength. “It’s a way to recycle the containers; plus, they’re fireproof, impervious to water and stronger than traditional building materials,” she says. “I was sold. And who better to try it out on than myself?” A new home would also mean that Fredman and Hawley could embrace a more streamlined aesthetic. “We had a fairly traditional cottage and were ready for a move to something more sustainable and far less conventional,” says the designer. Despite Fredman’s passion for the project, it took several years to design and execute the home. And there was a lot of new ground to cover for the designer and her team, which included architect Terri Crittenden and general contractor John Crittenden, who is with Fredman’s construction firm, Stone’s Throw Builders. The hardest part of the process was figuring out the potential of the containers—what they could or couldn’t do with them—to make sure the house would be structurally sound. “All of the research we did on building with shipping containers 254 / LUXESOURCE.COM

turned up in one book,” says Terri Crittenden. “We had to be analytical about every aspect of the design because we were forging new ground. We felt like pioneers.” Because the surrounding homes were classic cottages, the team needed to decide just how industrial to go in terms of style. “We decided to give the house a hybrid wood-and-steel façade that blends traditional and industrial design elements so it wouldn’t feel so out of place,” Fredman says. And given the size constraints of the containers, the team had to think outside of the box—literally—to get the kind of expansive, architecturally intriguing spaces Fredman cherishes in her residences. Steel shipping containers are built to standard sizes, but they come in two lengths and two heights, “which gave us some leeway,” John Crittenden says. To forge the lightfilled home rife with long sight lines and soaring ceilings, the team massed six containers (three side by side on
CH_LX35_Fredman_252-267.indd 256
two different parts of the house), cut out the walls, tore off the tops and added 20-foot-high ceilings punctuated with clerestory windows. Next, they stripped the sides off two other containers, joined the bases, added wooden support columns and wrapped them with screens to form a screened-in porch. Three more containers were then combined to build a guesthouse. Inside, muscular concrete walls, burnished cedar beams and custom oak cabinetry give the living spaces definition, decorative might, and storage and seating options. “This is a smaller house, so there are built-ins everywhere to give us places to store everything and different areas to sit,” Fredman says. Case in point: A cantilevered ledge underscoring the great room fireplace also doubles as a place to perch. Concrete clads some of the floors, along with wide rift-cut oak planks. And, in the master suite, broad wood floorboards climb up the bedroom ceiling, providing

an added sense of warmth to the space that belies the home’s heavy metal DNA. “We spend a lot of time in this space and wanted it to feel like a haven,” Hawley says. Artwork and cherished furnishings found spots in the home, as well, such as a metal cabinet that houses a dishware collection in the kitchen and a coffee table made from meticulously cut tree branches that holds court in the screened-in porch. Plenty of extraordinary new pieces increase the glamour quotient of the space, too—most notably a pair of jaunty wingback chairs made of resin in the great room and an epic wire chandelier in the kitchen. Other items were modified, like the great room’s coffee table, while many furnishings came from Fredman’s store,

including some of the sofas in the home, as well as the Kravet easy chairs and matching ottomans in the media room and a settee upholstered in a menswear patchwork fabric in the guesthouse. Today, Fredman and Hawley are thrilled by the community’s response to their new home. “People literally stop their cars in front of the house and start snapping pictures,” Fredman says. And it was even more clear that all their hard work to get the project done was worth it when two more container homes were built in Union Pier after theirs went up. “I feel like we started a trend in the Midwest,” says Fredman, “and I can see us living here for years to come.”

orking with wood is very satisfying,” says designer Casey Lurie, who creates handcrafted bespoke furniture, lighting and objects for design professionals and private clients worldwide. Enchanted by all things artistic as a child, Lurie chose to attend the California Institute of the Arts and soon began making furniture to support his creative ambitions. “A lot of my early work focused on the intersection of human and architectural scales, such as everyday wares and buildings, respectively,” says Lurie. “Furniture seemed to be the perfect intermediary between the two.” Having apprenticed as a cabinetmaker, Lurie appreciates the history of woodworking and approaches the creation of each piece—using both traditional craftsmanship and high-tech systems— from an artistic lens, tinkering with designs by hand before building a prototype. “To make quality pieces you have to devote a lot of time to them and prototyping helps me to understand the materials,” says Lurie, who recently conceived a lamp for Design Within Reach. The designer’s career took an exciting trajectory when Teruo Kurosaki, founder of Japanese furniture company Idée, discovered his work at a show and offered him a job in Tokyo. “The job and experience of living in that culture were incredible,” Lurie says. Echoes of that experience can be found in his current designs, which have a linear simplicity and rely on intricate, hand-cut joinery. “To make furniture without screws or nails is so appealing to me,” he says. Lurie’s Primo shelving system, for example, is assembled like a puzzle and held together by tension. And, the drawers in his Secretariat desk fit perfectly into the metal sawhorse frame, gradually increasing in size from top to bottom. Lurie’s refined, angular designs are also influenced by the tools he uses, as he prefers traditional hand tools whenever possible. “This way, there’s nothing between your hands and the chisel,” Lurie says. “Being connected to something that has such a rich tradition is fascinating.” Sounds like the perfect angle.

s interior designer Anthony Michael describes it, the views from this Lincoln Park high-rise were like none other he’d seen in the city, as it captures vistas of Diversey Harbor to the East and the skyscrapers to the South. “There aren’t many places in Chicago that you can get a lake, park and city all in one view,” he says. But turning your gaze back inside, there wasn’t much beyond a sea of white walls and an awkward layout. Michael had previously been commissioned to decorate one of the building’s model units, where he redesigned the floor plan and infused it with a cream, fuchsia and black palette. Homeowners Judi and John Simms remembered that model when they purchased one of the building’s prime corner units—and asked Michael to work the same magic for them and their teenage daughter. The Simmses gave Michael little direction beyond several inspiration photos that Judi describes as luxury mixed with glamour. The only things the couple brought with them from their previous residence were their two cats, an eclectic art collection that included a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with her eyes closed and John’s framed vintage sports photographs and memorabilia. There was only one real requirement: The master suite had to be divided into two bedrooms for the husband and wife. “I’m a horrible sleeper,” John says. “I told Anthony, ‘You have to make this like a cave.’ If I have even a sliver of light, it’ll wake me up.” Michael took that information and decided on a design plan, making sure that every fabric selection was tightly woven and highly durable, so the furnishings would be ideal for parties, teenagers and their cats, Dudley and Jake. And the painting of Queen Elizabeth II—now the centerpiece in Judi’s serene, creamy white bedroom—played a large part in Michael’s aesthetic approach everywhere else. “Judi likes things that are unique, unusual and bring about an emotional response,” he says. “They wanted a wow factor, but the style is really traditional with a twist.” Underlying much of the design are special backdrops such as the wallpaper-like mural by decorative painter Steven Hettrich, who covered the daughter’s bedroom in

a field of blue flowers, as well as a textural Maya Romanoff wallcovering that cloaks Judi’s bedroom. The pièce de résistance, however, is the bold Ellie Cashman Design paper in the powder room, a large-scale floral motif inspired by paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. “It looks as if an Impressionist painting exploded,” Michael says. The wow factor extends throughout the unit, including in the entry. Here, Michael switched out the white closet doors with a set of antique Tibetan doors that he asked general contractor Adam Piser to install in a shadow-box frame, making the closet look more like a large piece of art. “Anthony’s constantly coming up with new ideas that have never been done before, and it’s my job to turn them into reality,” Piser says. The doors and their frame, which conceals the tracking that allows them to slide apart, were “typical Anthony,” Piser adds. Michael then went one step further just down the hall with a design for the studded glass sliding door leading into the media room—a modern adaptation of the entry’s Tibetan ones but installed as a single oversize sliding barn door. Additionally, the designer conceived the door to have a large industrial slider. “That slider helped to fuse the ancient touches with the modern ones found throughout the home,” Piser says. Just past the media room lies the main focal point: a living room and parlor surrounded by the vast lake and city views and centered with a monumental smoked-glass fireplace—a design that Michael had never tried—which reflects throughout the large space. “The owners always like to push the limits,” Michael explains, which is why they went for his striking fireplace idea. In a more practical sense, he says, “I needed a visual room divider to some degree, and I also wanted to play up the views without distracting from them.” Hence, the designer used lake tones of gray, white and blue in the rugs, draperies and furnishings to punctuate the colors of the vista. He then incorporated an ottoman that adds a punch of chartreuse in the area to keep things interesting. Michael also designed the rooms to have multiple purposes through clever uses of built-in storage. This is most notably seen in the dining area, which also doubles as a study, where he designed an architectural divide to separate the dining area and living room and incorporated space on each side for closets. Furthermore, he conceived a banquette—inspired by the old supper clubs of the 1950s that featured tufted, tight and high banquettes—which provides an arresting backdrop for both mealtime and working at home. “I love the largeness of the piece, yet it’s still cozy enough to envelop you in its arms,” Michael says. The Simmses couldn’t be more pleased with the renovation, which took about 18 months to complete. “We probably spend more time at home than we ever did in our lives,” John says, adding that he is sleeping better than ever in his midnight gray, Ralph Lauren-inspired gentleman’s retreat. “This home is so luxurious,” Judi adds, “and whatever room you’re sitting in, there’s a magnificent panoramic view.”

Interior designer Anthony Michael had a sofa custom-made to fit into the living room bay window of this Chicago residence, giving homeowner Judi Simms a cozy place to curl up with a book. The sofa joins chairs by Schnadig International Corporation and a Bernhardt coffee table.

Christopher Guy chairs encircle a custom coffee table, also conceived by Michael and fabricated by Keith Clayton Furniture. A Stark rug runs underfoot. Opposite: Michael used layers of draperies throughout the living room to both break up the windows and absorb sound. A Mattaliano chair holds court with another custom sofa by Michael and a Haute Hides zebra rug. The custom ottoman features a pop of color with a chartreuse Keleen Leathers material.
