minotticucine, a leader and pioneer of the use of stone in kitchen cabinetry and bathroom vanities, has always had the same ambition: to create poetry in accordance with its principles of rationality and functionality. stone, wood, metal, water and fire are the depositories of minotticucine’s will to freeze time. extreme minimalism combined with the use of natural materials represents a challenge to the swirling succession of ephemeral fashions and trends. using the primordial materials and elements that nature provides and carving time in archaic shapes, minotticucine makes its products timeless. awarded international recognitions and having a team of selected designers, such as alberto minotti and claudio silvestrin, minotticucine has set the trends and innovations in the kitchen industry for more than 60 years. minotticucine is where high design, perfection of craftsmanship and functionality meet.

the art of organization MIAMI — There are few better examples of the marriage between organization and art than Closet Factorys’ design for this wall unit. Closet Factory Designer Ignez Simoes had a vision: displaying their vast collection of art and art books around two large paintings. Collaborating with the clients and using the two paintings as centerpieces, we designed a 20 ft. by 20 ft. wall unit largely comprised of equally sized square cubbies. A rather pedantic design, admittedly, however, with the use of our imagination, we were able to transform the unit and breathe life into it with little touches. We varied the thickness of certain shelves. We installed a rolling ladder so books and objects higher up wouldn’t just be eye candy — they could be accessed and felt, adding substance to the otherwise visually stunning result. Of course, we had a little help. Closet Factory was lucky: our clients had spent years carefully curating their collection and had accumulated a number of interesting objects. With a minimal, clean design, we were able to appreciate the aesthetic value of the wall unit’s contents itself. The unobtrusive wall unit keeps the focus on the art and acts as a vessel, rather than a centerpiece. After all, there are two magnificent paintings. What goes into a unit can be just as important as the design of the system. As great as a design is, if you stuff it full of clothes or bring in clashing elements, it loses the identity of what it’s trying to convey. Curation is important. By designing around the art collection, Closet Factory designed a wall unit that was actually custom — it was built for their art collection — and was able to transcend expectations. No easy feat when priceless pieces are at play.

After a 30-year occupant moved out, a young couple purchased this apartment, refreshing it with daring and unique finishes from head to toe. The tiny, 49-square-foot kitchen (small even by New York standards) receives its personality from Poggenpohl’s gray nut tree cabinetry and aluminum backsplash— complete with Gorilla wallpaper. Functionality was key, with custom features to clear the countertops of clutter and create space for clever, smaller-scale appliances.

This kitchen design was part of a complete renovation on the 20th floor of a condominium in St. Louis, Missouri. The entire unit was stripped from floor to ceiling, and reconfigured to fulfill the homeowners’ wishes for an open floor plan. To accommodate their desire for a welcoming kitchen with clean lines, Poggenpohl products were used here and in nearly every room in the home. The result is a modern, seamless aesthetic.

ON THE GO

This July/August issue marks our annual celebration of global design. In it, we take you around the world— everywhere from a curated concept shop in Marrakesh to a 1950s Berlin high-rise-turned-whimsical hotel, with bicycles suspended from the lobby’s ceiling. We also, always, bring you much closer to home with the best in regional design. While jetting off to another time zone can often inspire, so, too, can your own zip code. In addition, we’re encouraging readers to take another trip this summer: over to our new digital content site, luxedaily.luxesource.com, where you’ll discover design-related stories galore. Our 13 regional editions of Luxe provide an endless array of styles, ideas and design resources from across the country.

This page: Luxe takes you on an international journey this issue, highlighting such dynamic global venues as Morocco’s L’Hôtel Marrakech (top, left and right), designed by Jasper Conran, and the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin (above).

214 Modern Vintage

“While it isn’t a trend but rather a predictable constant in design, metals were on display at Spring Market. Seeing the way companies like Milling Road for Baker reimagined classic finishes—as they did with the Wrap console—in a fresh and modern way is incredibly inspiring to us. The marble top paired with the sleek, sexy base makes this piece a total showstopper. Vintage was another strong theme we saw in furnishings, art and accessories. We were impressed with the Barrie Benson collection for Highland House. The way she reimagined vintage pieces of furniture and explored bold color palettes was exciting beyond words!” Milling Road

“Craftsmanship and an appreciation for artisan work were dominant themes at HPMKT, and are a major cultural push impacting interior design today. The usage of materials in their raw form showcases their natural beauty. Our absolute favorite was the Floating Credenza 1702 from Craft Associates Furniture. They used solid walnut to create the most sensual form that celebrates the grain of the wood.” Credit: Addison Jones Photography

“Neutrals were being paired with different styles and accents throughout the showrooms we visited at HPMKT. We fell head over heels for the John-Richard Brass Six-Light Chandelier. The white marble paired so fabulously together with the brass—such a modern take on a classic chandelier shape and style. We also loved the Bark Chair by OLY—the classic style with the textured look of tree bark can be used in interior or exterior applications. We love the OLY line in general because of the clean modern vibe that gives a nod to past classic looks.”

FUTURE TRENDS

What do the Style Spotters see coming to HPMKT this Fall? Look for more vintage-inspired pieces, unexpected artisan touches, and white textures incorporating ethereal finishes. Highland House

KidSanctuary campus

SINCE 2009, KIDSANCTUARY CAMPUS HAS BEEN A LEADER IN STRATEGICALLY DESIGNING A CAMPUS THAT PROVIDES 24-HOUR CARE AND SAFE HOUSING FOR ABUSED, ABANDONED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THEIR HARMFUL ENVIRONMENTS AND PLACED IN FOSTER CARE. After completing Phase I of the campus, which includes three cottages—the J.M. Rubin Cottage (established in 2012), the Dodero Family Cottage (established in 2014) and Sam’s Cottage (established in 2015)—KidSanctuary Campus acquired an additional five acres of land and launched Phase II in 2017, with the groundbreaking of a new cottage for boys named by the Sprayregen Family Foundation. A pavilion, a recreation area and a storage building with restroom facilities will break ground this summer and open simultaneously with the new boys’ cottage in fall 2017, followed by the construction of the enrichment center in 2018. Onshore Construction is the builder of the 10-acre campus, and more than 60 incredible interior designers, led by design team chairman Joe Fava, of Fava Design Group, have collaborated with more than 200 vendors to offer these very special children a brighter future.

We thank both Gerald Sprayregen, of the Sprayregen Family Foundation, and Michael Peterson of Luxe Interiors + Design at SANDOW, for their leadership in philanthropy of this impactful gift that will offer safe homes for children placed in foster care today and in the future,” says Connie Frankino, founder and president of KidSanctuary Campus. Gerald Sprayregen with Connie Frankino

KidSanctuary invites you to name the 1,000-square-foot Pavilion, which will include an outdoor kitchen and picnic tables where the children and guests will gather together to create special memories at the campus. Donation of $200,000.

Sponsor the construction of the Storage & Facilities Building, which will offer ample storage space for recreational equipment and restrooms for the children and guests. Donation of $50,000.

Ivette Arango Interiors

For Ivette Arango, interior design is about understanding the client and their lifestyle—and the emotion behind both. The principal of her namesake firm, Ivette Arango Interiors, Arango strives to create environments that not only fulfill the homeowner’s current dreams, but also anticipate the aesthetic desires and functional needs of the inhabitants as they grow and change. “The interior design of a project must be personal to the client, and the designer needs the flexibility and range of abilities to seamlessly realize the concepts and ideas that create a beautiful, practical and livable space,” Arango says. Bringing together proper scale, textures, colors, furniture and objects, Arango and her team achieve stunning commercial and residential

spaces that live up to the owner’s every expectation.

FORECASTING TRENDS In addition to gaining renown for her varied portfolio, Arango has become known for an ability to identify trends before they become prevalent. “Predicting trends is a kind of instinct for me,” she says. “It isn’t the result of research, but rather an inherent understanding of how trends evolve in waves and a feeling I get about the next big thing.”

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

MIMI FAUCETT Writer / Austin My creative influences come from… Print magazines. Nothing gives me more creative joy than a favorite, familiar magazine still having the ability to surprise me. Long live print! Favorite book: Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington. Not only is the story inspiring, but the hot-orange cover makes this book coffee table-worthy. Top three things on your design wish list: I’m dying for a set of black linen sheets from Hawkins New York—what I consider to be the perfect summer bed set. I’m also currently obsessing over L.A. artist Bari Ziperstein’s quirky ceramic vases, and I’m steadily saving a spot on my wall for a face painting (or two!) from Sally King Benedict. Most fascinating person you’ve ever met: My grandmother, Nana. She’s someone who’s generous with time, laughter and sensitivity, but first and foremost, she’s a listener. It’s rare to get a story about her past, but when you do, it’s always fascinating.

ARIC ATTAS

Photographer / Palm Beach If not a photographer, I would be… A musician. I’ve performed with jazz, rock and blues bands over the years. I also create guitar-based Ambient Soundscapes to accompany many of my fine art exhibitions, as I find sound is a great counterpoint to my visually oriented work. Prized possessions: I have a photograph from the first roll of film I shot. It’s a black-and-white print I took at age 12, and I treasure it because I’m intrigued by how this simple close-up of a printing press foreshadowed my fascination with light, space, form and design. Also, my health. Having won two fights with cancer, I am aware of the value of good health, and I cherish it every day. Finally, I love my best friend and studio mate, Macchiato, a 3-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, who was rescued from an elephant preserve. Upcoming project: I’m excited to be working on new photographs for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Clare Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut, that will run from October 14 through December 31. These cosmos-inspired images explore the intersection of art, science and spirituality.

LX_COM14_Contributors.indd 92

ERIC PIASECKI Photographer / New York What type of design inspires you? Though my personal aesthetic tends to lean toward modern, I enjoy all different types of interiors. Right now, I really like seeing how designers are taking traditional design and adding modern twists to make it more contemporary. If money were no object, I’d buy… A new horse for our barn in New Mexico. Most interesting person you’ve met: Years ago, we were shooting Versace’s mansion in South Beach, Miami, and I got to meet famed photographer Helmut Newton by the gold-tiled pool—it was an over-the-top experience all around! Preferred superpower: It would have to be the ability to fly— no more airplanes! Of course, I would need some kind of side car for all my equipment.

KARA PICKMAN Writer / Miami Favorite design trend: That everything old becomes new again—I could live in any of Terence Conran’s design books, but I’m particularly partial to the 1974 edition of The House Book. And if you’re into obsessing over details (or like to think you are), check out the quirky photo styling in the 1990 edition of Complete Home Storage. Dream assignment: I’m honored to work with innovative clients across the country and around the world who champion art and design, including the Guggenheim, Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Smithsonian, Design Miami/ and many more, and my goal is to always both expand and refine my client list and creative projects. Most-treasured possessions: The dining room table and chairs passed down to us from my mother-in-law and late father-in-law; they were custom-made in Spain for my wife’s grandmother. The table seats at least 10 and is so large we had to take the dimensions into account when we purchased our first home two years ago. There was no way we were buying a house where we couldn’t eat around that table! If I had $20,000 to blow, I’d… Commission the custom Cuban floor tiles my wife wants for our sun room—and start the renovation we’ve been planning. On your nightstand: Most recently, Elif Batuman’s novel The Idiot. If not a writer, I would be… An art conservator. Maybe in another life...

VISUAL HISTORY AT VENERABLE COVERINGS COMPANY DE GOURNAY, THE CECIL GURNEY SISTERS CARRY ON THEIR FATHER’S LEGACY WHILE KEEPING THEIR EYES ON THE FUTURE THROUGH A SERIES OF BUZZ-GENERATING COLLABORATIONS. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

Imagine growing up in a magical world where butterflies flutter along perfectly painted vines and mischievous monkeys frolic up and down the walls. Now imagine that place is your childhood home and those fanciful landscapes are the family business, and you might get a sense of the charmed upbringing had by sisters Hannah and Rachel Cecil Gurney. “We grew up in a stunning house, decorated by our father, just opposite Kensington Gardens in London,” says Hannah. “My sister and I used to sit on the stairs, fascinated by the Chinese figures on the wallpaper.” Depicting peasant life in rural 18th-century China, the pattern, which featured scenes of silk-weaving and porcelain-making, wasn’t just a work of breathtaking decoration, but also a lesson in history and culture. “It was all very exotic to a 6-year-old Londoner, and our father would happily spend hours talking us through it all,” she says. Their father, Claud Cecil Gurney, founded de Gournay, the world-renowned maker of exquisite handmade wallcoverings, christening the brand with the French root of the family name in 1986.

As the story goes, Claud had trouble finding skilled artisans to restore some antique wallpaper in his home; so, through the Chinese Trade Commission in London, he located artists familiar with the painting techniques in mainland China. Working with the craftsmen, he began to create hand-painted papers, reigniting a tradition that had begun in the early 18th century, when chinoiserie was all the rage among the European aristocracy. By staying true to original production techniques— typically six artisans work on a single paper that can take up to 150 hours to produce—Claud created a truly bespoke luxury item. Today, his daughters help run the company—Hannah as director, and Rachel as the global style manager—putting their stamp on a number of forward-thinking initiatives while preparing to take over the family business when their father retires. “Our father has been wonderful about allowing us to make decisions and take on a lot of responsibility,” says Hannah. “He understands that if he is serious about handing over the reins, he needs to trust and support our ideas and allow us to learn from our mistakes. We love what we do so much that we want to ensure we safeguard it for the next generation.” The company’s vision has expanded to include both more contemporary designs and ones that reflect other global perspectives, such as the more abstract Japanese and Korean collection, an

example of which features a weeping willow motif, or the Papiers Peints Panoramiques collection, which is inspired by 19th-century French murals of exotic scenes. “While de Gournay has always been seen as a company that makes very traditional hand-painted papers, my sister and I encourage a more modern aesthetic through employing innovative new techniques and colorways, as well as developing new collections,” says Hannah. One strategic move that has proven successful: a string of high-profile collaborations, the most recent of which is an au courant take on an Art Deco motif inspired by and created in conjunction with Harrods department store. “Art Deco is making a comeback in interior design, and I love the use of geometric shapes, gilt and lacquer in interiors,” says Rachel. “The new design features an ornate scallop pattern gilded onto a metallic background with hand-painted watercolor accents.” Adds Hannah, “The wallpaper has a contemporary edge that we think will appeal to a whole new audience.”

In the quest to expand the brand’s reach, de Gournay pairs up in September with style icon Kate Moss, the latest partnership to feature a boldface name more synonymous with the runway than the annals of interior design. Other recent sartorial collaborations include Matthew Williamson, Jenny Packham and Moda Operandi. Most recently, the company teamed up with Italian fashion label Aquazzura for a line of embroidered footwear and a Tropicalia-inspired wallpaper (shown in part on the previous page), which they developed as a nod to brand founder Edgardo Osorio’s Colombian heritage. Of the synergy between the company and the fashion industry, Hannah feels it’s a natural fit—after all, wallpaper is a form of dressing for one’s home. “There are a lot of similarities between couture and de Gournay,” she says. “We make everything by hand to the highest quality while offering limitless bespoke capabilities. Furthermore, people with style tend to have flair when it comes to their interiors, and vice versa. These days being stylish extends to a whole lifestyle, not just your clothing.”

RADAR / BIG IDEA

All handmade rugs tell a tale, spinning a narrative through silk and wool. In the case of Amadi Carpets, there’s another story as well: In 1984, the Ahmadi family fled war-torn Afghanistan to neighboring Pakistan, eventually emigrating to America with little more than the clothes on their backs and a talent for weaving. Here, Zubair Ahmadi, one of the five brothers behind the brand, shares with us the company’s artistic and philanthropic vision. For 20 years, Amadi Carpets has created some of the most dynamic and finely made rugs on the market. How did you learn the skills of the trade? Growing up in a family of nine children in Afghanistan, we learned the art of weaving from our mother, whose family opened the first silk-weaving factory in Kabul during the 1960s. As a kid, I worked on the loom alongside my brothers after school. We also learned to restore different types of antique rugs and textiles from various countries over the years, so we not only have a knowledge of the construction, but we’re familiar with different techniques and styles. Those same skills eventually led me and my brother, Zabi, to open

WRITTEN BY BRITTANY S. CHEVALIER

our own small 400-square-foot workshop in Los Angeles in 1995, where we refurbished rugs found at flea markets and auctions. Today, all five of us—Zabi, Assad, Jawid, Murtaza and me—work collectively on operations and designs at Amadi. How did you grow the company from a local repair shop to a global enterprise? Two years after opening our shop, we couldn’t find the quality of rugs we desired. We learned of numerous Afghan weavers who had fled to nearby Peshawar, Pakistan, during the civil war in the 1990s. We feel a deep connection with the people of Afghanistan and were looking for a way to assist those refugees. Zabi made the journey to Peshawar in 1997, and, coincidentally, ran into a foreman who worked in the factory that belonged to our mother’s family. Hiring him and his family led to employing other refugees. As the years went on, five looms turned into 10, 10 turned into 200, and soon we were employing over 1,000 Afghan weavers living in Pakistan.

At what point did you move the weaving operation back to Afghanistan? After the country’s liberation from the Taliban in 2003, many of the workers returned to Afghanistan. That’s when we opened our first weaving workshop in Kabul and our focus shifted to employing an ignored sector of the population: women. It was our goal to create a safe workplace

where women would be empowered to make a living. It wasn’t easy: Even though we were from Afghanistan ourselves, we had to convince fathers, husbands and brothers that we were setting up a safe, harassment-free environment for their daughters, wives and sisters. Providing transportation to and from work offered them further protection. Additionally, due to four decades of ongoing war, a whole generation has been raised without an education; therefore, we offer one hour of basic reading and writing lessons every day. In terms of the process, what distinguishes you from other rug companies? Since we control our own production, we get to be more creative, productive and effective than a typical rug gallery or company. From sourcing the raw wool to washing it, carding and dying it, we control every step. And the fact that we are improving lives along the way is an added plus. Share what’s next for Amadi, design- and philanthropy-wise. We want to be more than a rug company. We’d like to launch furniture and textile lines one day. In terms of giving back, our goal is to extend the outreach of our programs and build more weaving centers in other parts of Afghanistan. After all, women are the backbone of the family, so if you help one woman, you help many people beyond her.

ROMANCING the STONES THE DESIGNER BEHIND MATTHEW STUDIOS TRAVELS THE WORLD SEARCHING FOR RARE CRYSTALS AND SEMIPRECIOUS GEMS TO CROWN HER LUXURIOUS LIGHTING AND HARDWARE COLLECTIONS. WRITTEN BY MICHELLE BRUNNER PHOTOGRAPHY BY NINA CHOI

LX_COM14_Radar_Bespoke_MathewStudio.indd 102

When you walk into Katherine Wildt O’Brien’s studio, you’d be forgiven for thinking you stumbled into a jeweler’s workshop or a geology buff’s paradise. A panoply of glimmering stones greets visitors of the space—with bright crystal quartz, deep violet amethyst and gleaming pyrite, also known as fool’s gold, all on glorious display. Unearthed from the farthest reaches of the globe, the shining specimens inspire New York City-based

Matthew Studios’ collections, which include hardware, lighting and case goods. Wildt O’Brien’s love of exotic rocks started at a young age. As a teenager, she worked parttime in a gem shop, where an eccentric, elderly West Indian woman taught her about crystals and their properties. Following her passion, she established Matthew Studios, named for her pet rabbit, in 2008. Her big break came when Tory Burch asked her to design crystal luminaries

for her stores. “Just walking into the Tory Burch offices is so inspiring,” she says. “When we got the opportunity to work on custom lamps for her, it was a dream come true, not to mention a creative learning experience.” Today, the company occupies a large loft space in Harlem, close to where the designer lives. In fact, it was the area’s African market, just a few blocks away from her studio, that provided the impetus for Wildt O’Brien’s latest hardware line. “I love the handcrafted, global ‘Gypset’ vibe at the market,” she says. “I have been collecting cowrie shell earrings for years and have wanted to do a collection incorporating them, since the cowrie shell is a traditional symbol of wisdom and abundance. Horn is another favorite used in African craft, and a powerful talisman of strength and inner power.” Acquiring it is another story: “It took two years to find a reputable source for naturally shed horn,” she says. Not surprisingly, Wildt O’Brien’s inspiration board is full of recognizable safari-chic imagery, such as film stills from Out of Africa, photos from vintage Ralph Lauren runway shows, the work of photographer Peter Beard and shots of intricate, hand-beaded Masai necklaces. “The pieces are imbued with a nomadic spirit,” she says. A passion for travel, painting and even flea-market finds also filters into the design process. “I recently found a red-tagged, sale-bin rhinestone purse, and the handle inspired my new metal Harper cabinet pull series,” she says. Refined settings of polished brass, nickel and chrome allow the stones to steal the show, whether it’s the deep whiskey-hued facets of smoky quartz or the vibrant emerald waves of malachite—both of which are sourced from mines in South America and Africa, respectively.

LX_COM14_Radar_Bespoke_MathewStudio.indd 104

“Simple forms are paired with natural, tonal textures that resonate against hand-cast metal,” Wildt O’Brien says. That juxtaposition of organic forms with polished finishes lends the collection a sophisticated well-traveled vibe that hints at many of the pieces’ exotic origins. Says the designer, “I’m still charmed by the idea that these stones have journeyed around the world to end up in a stylish new setting.”

BEST IN SHOWS SET A COURSE FOR FOUR DAZZLING DESIGN FAIRS, ALL BELLWETHERS OF TRENDS TO COME, IN FOUR STUNNING EUROPEAN SETTINGS. READ ON TO FIND OUT WHAT MAKES EACH ONE UNIQUE.

WRITTEN BY MARY ORE

FEBRUARY 6-10, 2018

▲ BIENNALE INTERIEUR, KORTRIJK, BELGIUM

Reason to go: The best of Nordic style is on full display here, with more than 700 eyecatching new introductions in furnishings, accessories and lighting, in an event that coincides with the festivities of Stockholm Design Week. What you’ll find: Eighty percent of the products are Scandinavian in origin, so it’s no surprise that regional brands, such as up-and-coming lighting design line Pholc, as well as established brands like Svenskt Tenn, whose vibrant style is shown in the vignette at right, are well represented. Smaller makers are celebrated, too, for their reinterpretations of traditional Scandi style. While the fair itself unfolds at Stockholmsmässan convention center, the entire city plays host to over 100 events, installations and parties as part of Design Week. stockholmfurniturelightfair.se

OCTOBER 2018

Reason to go: Small in size, but big in design talent, Belgium is a growing destination for creatives and aesthetes alike, and this highly selective, rigorously curated show happens every two years. A nonprofit fair, the Biennale Interieur’s unique installations often blur the line between commercial design and fine art. What you’ll find: With nearly half of the new products hailing from Belgium, you’ll see innovative twists on regional vernacular staples such as neutral linens, raw and rough-hewn woods, and burnished metals. The focus is on mostly local, European-produced design with a decidedly international point of view, and collaborations across industries or cultures are encouraged. Past galleries represented include Maniera from Brussels, Carwan Gallery from Beirut, and Paris’ Studio Dessuant Bone, whose “Perpetual Motion” installation is shown here. interieur.be

APRIL 17-22, 2018

Reason to go: Top Italian luxury brands save their launches for this acclaimed show, which is one of the world’s largest and most-buzzed-about furniture fairs, with more than 2,000 exhibitors on display. The fair runs in conjunction with two other shows that alternate each year: Euroluce (with international lighting releases) and EuroCucina (showcasing new innovations in kitchens). What you’ll find: Aesthetic beauty, perfected over the centuries by the Italians, is the hallmark of the show, which takes place during Milan Design Week. In addition to dramatic displays in the Mario Bellini-designed convention center (like the Cappellini booth at right from last year’s show), the city at large gets into the spirit, offering up its 17th-century palazzos, empty concrete train vaults and even 12th-century churchyards as magnificent settings for designer suites or lines of lighting, making a stroll through the already alluring Italian city full of even more magic and wonder. salonemilano.it/en/

MAISON&OBJET, PARIS JANUARY 19-23, 2018

Reason to go: While one rarely needs an excuse to visit Paris, Maison&Objet gives design aficionados added incentive, as well as a sneak peek into the lifestyle and home decor looks that will soon catch on everywhere. What you’ll find: Having originated as an exhibition of tabletop decor, the vision for the show has expanded exponentially—it now occupies eight halls, each one’s offerings ascending in grandeur, culminating in full-scale room displays by leading international brands. While the convention center is a 30-minute shuttle ride from the city, ce n’est pas grave—new grave talents to discover, like Zuza Mengham and Glassworks, the artists responsible for the objets at left, respectively, make the trip worth it. Occurring simultaneously in the city is Paris Deco Off, a showcase for the newest textiles and wallcoverings from top global companies. maison-objet.com 124 / LUXESOURCE.COM

BLUEPRINT EIGHTY SEVEN PARK

Each floor seems to hover effortlessly above the one below it in this architectural feat dreamt up by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano of Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Skirting Miami Beach, Eighty Seven Park is a luxury residential beachfront oasis with an anticipated completion date of 2018. Developed in conjunction with interior design firm RDAI and landscape architecture firm West 8, the interiors and exteriors converge to form soothing palettes, flourishing gardens and endless ocean views. An indoor botanical garden sets the scene in the lobby, where

residents have the option to peruse notable features such as a wine cellar, salon, library, Soul Center Spa and two pools all before entering their own homes. Within each of the 70 residences, an organic palette features American oak, Italian stone and glass walls with panoramic views of both sea and sky. Yet most notable within is the ability to customize the European kitchen, bathrooms and interior finishes, allowing each suite to become a trademark of the buyer. There is no doubt that elegance and unprecedented luxury is making its way to 8701 Collins Ave. eightysevenpark.com

TALKING SHOP WITH PAULO BACCHI

When did you open? In January of this year, we unveiled a shop-in-shop of organic accessories located on the second floor of the Artefacto showroom at 17651 Biscayne Blvd. in Aventura. Let’s talk details of the space. Many of our clients seek global statement pieces to refresh their homes in the coming seasons for entertaining, so this addition to Artefacto was an answer to that call. Spanning 1,000 square feet, the light and blissful space is punctuated by artisanal accessories inspired by world travels— think organic woods, hand-knitted blankets and geological sculptures. A green wall complements the outdoor-oriented furniture, such as the exclusive Estrela collection by the Campana Brothers. The inventory? Some of our favorites amongst our clients are the handblown glass vases, the Merino wool blankets that have an architectural hand-knitted look to them and the carved vests that show how fashion and design come together to create one-of-a-kind pieces, all exclusive to Artefacto Home. What’s next for the brand? We’re opening a new showroom in Coral Gables designed by Brazilian architects Domo Architecture + Design. Like Artefacto, Domo favors the importance of sustainability, proximity to nature and timeless lines. artefacto.com 126 / luxesource.com

OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS A stellar group of new outposts are calling South Florida home this year. This spring, the globally acclaimed Roche Bobois (3450 Biscayne Blvd.) will be a new addition to the Design District. Showcasing exclusive pieces from the Les Contemporains collection, visitors will also find a lush tree garden, polished concrete, custom wallpapers and Flos lighting in the 4,500-square-foot space. Fine Italian fabric line, C&C Milano (7610 NE 4th Ct., Ste. 105), has expanded its presence to Miami Ironside where inside the clean showroom textural memos cover the walls, showcasing the latest in bespoke fabrics. NIBA Designs (3609 N. 29th Ave.) has relocated to the South Florida Design Park with its custom rugs and a new collection of beautiful bed linens that take center stage.

DATE BOOK MICHAEL GOLDSTEIN

With the opening of Brickell City Centre and construction underway for the Miami Worldcenter, it’s no surprise that development is booming in downtown Miami. But that growth is quickly expanding northward to Sunny Isles Beach where another project, The Estates at Acqualina, is on the verge of making major waves. Developers with The Trump Group are building on their already successful Acqualina Resort & Spa with this new high-rise luxury condominium project, which will be the first of its kind in the U.S. to feature lobbies designed by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld—think details such as Roman-inspired etchings and a shimmering fountain surrounded by hammered-metal flooring. With the first phase anticipated to open in 2020, the project includes a South and North Tower, each holding 152 and 92 residences respectively, as well as Villa Acqualina, a residents-only amenity complex. To help us navigate this region, we turned to Michael Goldstein, president of sales at The Trump Group, for his insider tips on where to play, shop and eat. estatesatacqualina.com 9 a.m. Have breakfast alfresco at Aq by Acqualina where you can enjoy a cappuccino on the restaurant’s outdoor terrace overlooking the resort’s three oceanfront pools and beach. I love the fresh whole-wheat croissants and exotic fruit selection. The eggs Benedict is also delicious or you can splurge on the lavish breakfast buffet. 10 a.m. Afterward, take Acqualina’s house car to the Miami Design District where you can easily spend the entire day touring the shops and boutiques. Begin on Northeast 40th Street at Fendi Casa and meet Ricardo Britto, the director of interior design and projects. He is well-versed in the new contemporary collections from the line that you won’t want to miss.

12 p.m. Next, a visit to Ornare is due. Enjoy a glass of champagne while perusing various finishes and configurations for closets and kitchens, as well as custom furniture. 1 p.m. Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink is the perfect lunch spot. It’s one of my all-time favorite restaurants. I’m quite partial to the grilled skirt steak frites entrée and the chocolate fudge cake with Irish cream gelato and malt caramel for dessert. 2 p.m. Take a trip to the Jonathan Adler boutique on Northeast Second Avenue for accessories, custom rugs and a great tabletop collection (a personal favorite of mine). 3 p.m. Next, let’s tour the Janus et Cie showroom for exquisite outdoor

furniture. At the Estates, every unit will have large outdoor balconies featuring a sauna, summer kitchen and Jacuzzi, and the penthouses and single-family homes will have swimming pools; so, we’ll need to dress those areas with beautiful outdoor furnishings. 4 p.m. For our final stop, visit Simona’s for one-of-a-kind china and silverware by top designers. We are lucky to have this store so close to us in the Design District. I always make a trip to see the new styles. 6 p.m. Before making our way back to Acqualina, we’ll end the day with a light bite at Harry’s Pizzeria. Enjoy a cold beer and try my two favorite pizzas: the slow-roasted pork and the savory meatball.

HUBBARDTON FORGE

As a lighting designer, I should not be too focused on only the light fixture, but how that fixture interacts with the entire space, even if I don’t know what that space looks like.

” LED: LIGHTING THE FUTURE

An evolution in lighting design has taken place, incorporating new materials and technologies. Instead of retrofitting existing designs with LEDs, Hubbardton Forge has been developing designs specifically around the technology. To this end, the company has developed new initiatives, like using a local glassblower for many of its pieces and working with a local firm to develop LED components, thereby decreasing its environmental footprint. “We’re using LEDs in new and interesting ways,” Kitts says. “With our Möbius mini pendant, we were able to shape and form the light-guide element so that it becomes a sculptural aspect of the piece.”

When lighting the kitchen or bath, Hubbardton Forge’s director of design, David Kitts, has this one directive. “Select light fixtures that you love; not just like. The bathroom should be your own personal oasis, and your kitchen should be a place where friends and family gather.” Insightful advice from the design lead of America’s foremost luxury lighting manufacturer. Lighting sets the mood, so he suggests mini pendants in multiples over a kitchen island and a chandelier or pendant with dimmable light above the tub. “The pendants won’t interfere with the line of sight for guests or family in the kitchen, and the chandelier creates a spa-like atmosphere in the bath,” he continues. A true American success story, Hubbardton Forge is known for pushing the limits of form and materials to create handcrafted designs that meld the artistry and functionality of lighting. With 230 designers and makers, engineers and production team and staff, the HF team views the world through unique prisms as they create beautiful pieces. Take Kitts’ recent trip to Reykjavik, Iceland, where its street art opened his eyes to a new way of looking at lighting. “I was inspired not by the content or quality of the work, but how the art interacted and contributed to the space, the building and the neighborhood,” he says. “Walking past the same mural on a sunny day and then again on a stormy day could be two very different experiences.”

COSENTINO

Kitchen and bath remodels are no small feat, so make sure to invest the time and resources up front. Bring design inspirations in hand, and work with a professional to achieve the look you want within your budget.

1

According to the team at Cosentino, when it comes to surface solutions, granite has always been popular, but more consumers are moving toward quartz for its array of colors, lower maintenance and higher durability. And when it comes to style, they’re seeing contemporary themes, including industrial (midcentury modern and coastal), that combine clean lines, built-ins and simple cabinetry. As innovators in the world of kitchens and baths, Cosentino should know. The global company offers the latest in surfacing solutions by staying at the forefront of trends and manufacturing technologies. With the widest array of color and material choices, the company stresses the importance of cohesiveness so everything works together in the completed space. “Think long term,” the team says. “ ‘Will you love that bold color in a few years?’ ‘If you sell your home, would your choices be appealing to other buyers?’ “ They also cite the importance of weighing your lifestyle as much as your style. “While it’s easy to make decisions based on looks alone, it’s important to think about how you use your space.” These answers inform everything from material choice to amenities one should include in their kitchen or bath.

2

STYLISH + SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS When you choose Cosentino products, you are getting the best on the market. Their advanced technical qualities, wide color options and 25-year warranty stand apart from the rest. For countertops, the new N-Boost advancement improves the color and luster of Silestone quartz, and makes it easier to clean than ever before. And while Dekton, the ultracompact surface with superior durability, isn’t new, Cosentino continues to create innovative color options that replicate the look of other materials. For energy efficiency and environmentally friendly products, Silestone’s ECO Line delivers with a series of colors made from up to 75-percent-recycled content, while Dekton Trillium is made from 60-percentrecycled content. Additionally, the company pays special attention to maintaining low emissions and a 98-percent reuse of water.

MIELE

We believe in clean lines and timeless elegance with user-friendly features and the highest quality materials for every type of cook. Harmonious design is also key, making sure everything aligns perfectly together in the kitchen.

Unique features, the latest innovations and harmonious design characterize the centuriesold kitchen appliance manufacturer Miele. Since its founding in 1899, the German-based innovator has remained true to its philosophy of “Immer Besser”, or forever better, forward-thinking, environmentally friendly kitchen designs with the added promise of superior quality, convenience and the most discerning attention to detail. “We want to ensure that our customers have peace of mind when choosing Miele for their appliance needs,” vice president of marketing Christian Schwarz says. As the kitchen continues to be the hub of the home and a central location for entertaining and living, Miele rises to the occasion with colored appliances, steam and induction options, and smart technology as the “connected” kitchen grows in prominence. One example of this technology is Miele’s innovative M Touch display, which can be found on its ranges and ovens. Fast, easy-to-use and self-explanatory, these appliances operate intuitively by simply pressing or swiping with your fingertip. Be sure to visit a Miele Experience Center to explore further or participate in a cooking class to learn more from the experts at Miele.

So if a defect occurs, Miele’s customer service center can contact the customer, gain access to the appliance, and fix the problem. WOOD-MODE FINE CUSTOM CABINETRY

For 75 years, Wood-Mode has been producing high-quality cabinetry with time-honored techniques that blend timeless craftsmanship and functionality with a fashionforward approach to design.

For affluent homeowners and designers, Wood-Mode products are easily recognizable, from their wide variety of stains and finishes, to well-proportioned door styles and detailed moldings. But the high-end cabinetry manufacturer goes beyond the surface with smart features, such as motion technology for doors, unique storage solutions and integrated lighting, that increase the functional use of any space. “The integration of LED lighting into Wood-Mode cabinet interiors continues to evolve and will become more prevalent,” director of design John Troxell says. “Technology and design innovations have made former challenges, such as interior, recessed vertical lighting and drawer bank lighting, a standard option now.” When discussing trending styles, Troxell says transitional and contemporary looks continue, drawing on recycled materials or midcentury modern details to define the effect. No matter the style, the team at Wood-Mode agrees—cohesion is key. And when starting any renovation, they offer these tried-and-true tips: Do your homework; develop a wish list; establish a budget and a time frame; and collect images of rooms, features and products you like. Troxell adds, “A growing array of materials and finish applications will provide consumers and designers with greater possibilities to create kitchens and other rooms that are uniquely personal.”

WOOD-MODE ON … ILLUMINATION + INNOVATION Wealthy urban and suburban homeowners are increasing the square footage of their kitchens, combining multiple spaces into one large, open-concept area. This provides us with a lot of opportunities, including custom-made furniture like bookcases and desks, along with breakfast nooks and multipurpose islands. Designers and homeowners also have the option to select species and finishes that complement or contrast within their design. Other trends include interior lighting with integrated LED, under-cabinet and in-cabinet options. We continue to be inspired by advances in storage and functionality as well. And metal is making its mark, with stainless-steel countertops and metallic fronts for cabinets increasing in demand.

ZEPHYR

When asked to describe the philosophy behind Zephyr, company president Luke Siow says, “We strive to transform the kitchen through design, discovery and care. Through our products, design partnerships and innovative technology, we hope to elevate the kitchen as a center for self-expression, family and well-being.” Fait accompli for the foremost kitchen hood manufacturer, marking its 20th anniversary this year with a look back at the defining moments in the company’s history and its game-changing hoods. The first manufacturer to bring performance and power-driven ventilation to the kitchen, Zephyr made a name for itself with the introduction of its European-style chimney hoods. Since that time, the company has launched industry firsts such as its DCBL Suppression System®, and Bloom™ HD and BriteStrip™ LED products. Zephyr continues to break design barriers and give designers and consumers more options with its new Black Stainless Steel hoods with titanium coating; a sleek alternative to stainless steel. “Consumers believe that heightened design should be central in the kitchen, and are uncompromising when it comes to performance and quality,” Siow says. With thoughtful designs and an ongoing commitment to technological advancement, Zephyr elevated the kitchen hood from a purely utilitarian appliance to an eye-catching, artful centerpiece.

2

Zephyr continues to change the marketplace by blending form and function to create beautiful, high-quality hoods that are an asset to any home.

ZEPHYR ON … DESIGNER HOODS Since 1997, Zephyr has been at the forefront of kitchen innovation, design and technology. Aligned with this design-centric approach, the company has partnered with leading designers who balance aesthetics and technology with a masterful eye. In 2004, Zephyr released the Cheng Collection—a signature line of hoods through an exclusive partnership with design guru Fu-Tung Cheng, bringing his artistic and timeless style to the masses. Not long after, Robert Brunner, founder of Ammunition Design Group and the creative powerhouse behind products like Beats by Dre, joined Zephyr to create the innovative Arc Collection. A geometrically stunning marriage of glass and metal, this collection offers designers and homeowners modern sophistication at its finest.

At first sight: I’m completely impressed with Oeuffice’s penchant for reimagining the classics: They manage to create sculptural works of art that are equally functional and versatile. On composition: It’s against this backdrop that the stools prove their inherent duality. They feel natural against the exposed brick but would also easily hold their own in both a formal or contemporary setting. As far as design goes… Italy really has no limits. These stools resonate with the country’s influential style in part because of the simple application of elegant, timeless materials; the Cipollino Apuano marble is super-sleek, the travertine is very porous, and the Rosa Perlino marble is full of movement. Each element is independently unassuming, but in union, striking works of art are born. Lasting impression: Refined, sculptural, bold, fresh and playful.

POST MATES THE PIECES: Ionik Stool and Tuskan Stool THE DESIGNER: Oeuffice FIND IT: mattermatters.com THE INSPIRATION: When Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte and Jakub Zak’s creativity united in 2011 to form their U.K.-based design laboratory, Oueffice, they challenged themselves to imagine limited-edition objects, that were reminiscent of utopian ideals and innovation. Enter the Ionik and Tuskan stools, both part of a second coming of the studio’s Kapital collection and based on primitive stone columns resonant with classical architecture. Handcrafted in Italy using solid-stone blocks, they are modern in aesthetic and scale but maintain the integrity of their inspirational era—an edgy balance very much in line with the contemporary duo’s manifesto.

PALETTE PLEASER THE PIECE: Spring Lamp in Irish Green THE DESIGNER: Mathieu Lehanneur FIND IT: carpentersworkshopgallery.com THE INSPIRATION: Paris-based designer/artist/science enthusiast Mathieu Lehanneur dreamed up the Spring lamp, alongside its counterparts from the Spring series, with the intention of transporting design lovers to a land of natural and ecological metamorphosis. Lehanneur’s aim to create eye-catching objects that examine nature’s poetic side is realized in this delicate lighting fixture, comprised of a bundle of hand-blown, ribbed-glass tubes in a rich green marble base. Along with other materials from the series, both the marble and glass were incorporated into the piece in their natural color and condition— inciting a primitive moment in an otherwise distinctly modern piece.

OLIVER M. FURTH INTERIOR DESIGNER OLIVERMFURTH.COM

At first sight: There’s a wonderful sense of fluidity to this light fixture, almost like water that’s lit from within. Artist to artist: In my own work, I’m constantly trying to push the design dialogue forward, and this piece falls in that special spot between design and sculpture. Lehanneur is playing with our preconceived notions of what a lamp is and propelling those ideas a little further. It’s important… To know the rules before you break them. Here, the artist is clearly informed about design, which is why any risks taken clearly paid off. Global musings: As our world becomes larger, it’s increasingly important to look inward and become more focused. For example, I try to figure out what an area offers that’s specific to that place, whether woven silk textiles in Laos or innovative lighting in Paris. I am always on the hunt for the offbeat and the unusual. The French… Have been innovators in decorative arts since AndréCharles Boulle’s then-groundbreaking furniture in the 17th century, and I think Lehanneur is definitely following in the footsteps of his countrymen. Lasting impression: This design is sculptural, graceful, fluid, lyrical and dynamic.

CRATE MATTERS THE PIECE: P2 Lavinia Exagonal Armchair THE DESIGNER: Lazzarini & Pickering for Marta Sala Éditions FIND IT: thefutureperfect.com THE INSPIRATION: A second collaboration between noted Italian architect Marta Sala and Roman architectural studio Lazzarini & Pickering brings us the P2 Lavinia Exagonal armchair, a showstopper from Marta Sala Éditions’ Collection No – 2. Shown in a sumptuous Pierre Frey fabric, the seat’s striking shape and seductive proportions incite immediate interest. One would expect no less from this power collab, but there is still something to be said about a design that equally prizes comfort and allure. And in the case of the P2 Lavinia: Mission accomplished.

LEO PARRELLA

INTERIOR DESIGNER LEOPARRELLA.COM

At first sight: The Lavania Exagonal armchair is incredibly modern and reminiscent of Italian furniture from the 1960s and ’70s—a fitting result from this pairing of industry leaders. The piece is as smart from behind as it is straight on, and the exacting lines are both gorgeous and unapologetic. As a first-generation Italian… I may be biased, but I feel that Italy is the undisputed leader in design. Be it automobiles or architecture, furniture or fashion, the legacy of our people is bold, thoughtful design, and this piece is clearly Italian-born. Global gatherers: The hunt and find is one of the more thrilling parts of what I get to do with interiors. Pieces collected from around the world add that transportive element of a life welllived. And an international piece with heritage or a good story gives a sense of being collected rather than assembled. Lasting impression: This striking seat reads as stylish, architectural, luxurious and dramatic.

SEND AND DELIVER THE PIECES: Mali Vases and Jethi Vases THE DESIGNER: Jaimal Odedra FIND IT: maisongerard.com THE INSPIRATION: Moved by the melodious rhythm of bamboo forests, decorated fashion vet Jaimal Odedra set out to explore a new medium with his Mali and Jethi vases. Using bronze in the traditional sand-casting technique, the vases are handmade by artisans in Morocco, and though Odedra visualizes each form and silhouette, the life of each piece is organically determined by the skilled hands that shape it—resulting in one-of-a-kind mini masterpieces.

CONSUELO PIERREPONT AND KATIE SPALDING INTERIOR DESIGNERS SWAY-STUDIO.COM

At first sight: Jaimal’s pieces exude a dramatic subtlety and a relaxed-luxe nature. They’re extremely elevated and yet artisanal all at once. We are really drawn… To the versatility of these beautiful objects. They are such unique designs but don’t have an obvious provenance, in the best way possible. In design, culture and spirit… Morocco is perpetually inspiring with its use of colors, shapes and the effortless ability to seamlessly blend everything together. While these vases are a more modern interpretation of these traits, they embody the country’s unmistakable mélange of the organic and the well-crafted. Global musings: Nothing adds layers like sourcing from around the world. Our clients want to know the stories that are attached to a piece; they want us to use pieces that tell a part of their story. Jaimal’s works seem to do just that. Lasting impression: Fluid, effortless and memorable.

At first sight: The Celestial bowls are the perfect fusion of traditional forms with modernized midcentury ideals. While the shapes are evocative of ancient pottery, the studded embellishments are extremely current and pack an edgy punch. Ceramics (and Tulum for that matter) are… Having a huge moment, which makes Elad’s latest collection even more special and relevant. It’s really lovely to see regions with a long-standing relationship to these materials and techniques making a mark on contemporary design. The resulting pieces always seem to have the most integrity. At home: I imagine these objects functioning beautifully as both decor and utilitarian objects. I’m already picturing filling them with fruit or creating an unexpected floral arrangement. Lasting impressing: The Celestial bowls are modern, punk, classical and statement-making.

CASED GOODS THE PIECES: Celestial Bowl on Stand in Gold + Green and Celestial Bowl on Stand in Gold + Black THE DESIGNER: Elad Yifrach FIND IT: l-objet.com THE INSPIRATION: Elad Yifrach, the mastermind behind lifestyle brand L’Objet, fell in love with Tulum, Mexico, the moment his senses connected with the town’s lustrous and unparalleled warmth and energy. This beachy nook along the Yucatan Peninsula and its storied history inspired a collection of earthy, charmingly desaturated and understated yet elegant pieces. The Celestial bowls, especially, speak to Yifrach’s devotion to Tulum’s vibrancy and aesthetic: a little bit wild but nevertheless the pinnacle of authenticity.

WHITE GLOVE THE PIECE: The Man Ray Glass Leaf Mirror THE DESIGNER: Cox London FIND IT: rosetarlow.com THE INSPIRATION: After years of creative collaboration and a mutual affinity for the decorative arts, design duo Christopher and Nicola Cox officially joined forces in 2005 with the launch of their London studio. Ever since then, they have been producing exquisite and original pieces—the Man Ray mirror being no exception. A love letter to 19th-century French Dieppe bone mirrors, the Man Ray is a striking blend of handpulled ivory glass leaves, carved silver gilt wood and hand-silvered mirror plate, and embodies the very vision of its creators: designs that are rich in technique and timelessness.

MAX HUMPHREY INTERIOR DESIGNER MAXHUMPHREY.COM

At first sight: This showstopper of a mirror appeals to me in that it is extremely delicate but commanding of your attention—a true statement piece indeed. It also speaks to the fabulousness of Cox London as a company. Add Rose Tarlow’s stamp of approval and I’m sold. As an Anglophile… With a lifelong obsession for all things British—pop music, movies, art and design—this mirror epitomizes the U.K. tradition of things not always being what they seem. At first, I thought it was comprised of a million little shark teeth à la Damien Hirst’s renowned tiger shark in formaldehyde sculpture, which like this mirror, doesn’t fully register until staring it right in the face. On composition: I love the contrast of this fragile piece dwelling in an industrial space, when one would normally anticipate it living in a traditional environment. Lasting impression: This mirror is delicate, intricate, beautiful and unexpected.

AS THESE STUNNING HOMES ATTEST, WHITE WALLS ARE FAR FROM BASIC, ADAPTING TO EVERY STYLISH MOOD. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH

Straight-laced modernism heads to the subtropics, letting its proverbial hair down in this casual Palm Beach dining area designed by John Bjørnen, who softened the look of this space with a deft layering of soothing hues. 1 / Cool Down: Not all white paint choices are equal. Temper the mood of your white walls with a subtle color shift. Cool blue undertones in this room offer subtle contrast, especially behind this ecru-tinged artwork by Phil Barnhart. 2 / Top Coat: Sleek midcentury pieces boast a more lighthearted spirit in whitewashed finishes. For example, these classic Wishbone chairs feel invigorated in glossy white, and the modular bench is nothing but inviting in a pale Kravet shagreen. 3 / Bubble Pop: A subdued space can still enjoy some sculptural eccentricity, where interesting silhouettes take center stage. Reminiscent of effervescent bubbles, the hand-blown glass of this John Pomp chandelier delivers on delight. 4 / Good Nature: Just a touch of greenery can breathe life into a tonal space. Honoring the Palm Beach environs, a simple centerpiece of palm fronds beautifully punctuates the room’s soft colors.

A white-on-white palette may come off as lacking imagination—a blank canvas waiting to be filled. But designer Brian Gluckstein injects plenty of personality into this Palm Beach living room with rich fabrics and a bit of gloss. 1 / When in Rome: Introduce a little local character to your white walls with a distinctive surface treatment. Here, plaster is mixed with sand from the nearby beach, enveloping the room in understated warmth. 2 / Picture Perfect: Setting the tonal quality of a space becomes uniquely personal with the thoughtful use of collected artwork. This hyper-realistic painting by William Fisk, for example, provides a jumping-off point for an architectural play on light and dark. 3 / Equal Measure: Double down on your monochromatic color scheme with equally creamy textiles. A wool-and-sisal rug from Elte, paired with a custom linen sofa and matching chairs, lends tactile lushness. 4 / Soft Glow: Thanks to their reflective quality, metallic accents gleam best against crisp white. The gilded-iron coffee table and decorative bowls seem illuminated against the room’s various pale shades.

Bright white proves essential for preserving this naturally luminous bedroom, which designer Marcelo Fernandez captured to perfection for this sun-kissed haven on Sunset Island in Miami Beach. 1 / Shine Bright: Nothing reflects the dazzling Miami sunshine better than gleaming white lacquer, taken to full advantage here on the walls. 2 / Do Not Disturb: Embrace the empty expanse of your walls for a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Here, only the essentials are used for adornment—a pair of discreet silvery Flos wall lamps for late-night reading. 3 / Sand and Sun: Stark white takes on a seaside mood when contrasted with raw and earthy textures. This is successfully accomplished in the room with a grass-cloth accent wall, as well as textural rattan in the area rug and a sleek bench from Monica James & Co. 4 / In Harmony: Create delicious tone-on-tone interest with light bedding. Far from being one note, the fresh white sheets on this low-slung B&B Italia bed help retain the bedroom’s airiness.

PREPARE FOR TAKE-OFF AS LUXE SETS AN INTERNATIONAL AGENDA THAT INCLUDES AMAZING ARCHITECTURE, INSPIRING INTERIORS AND MUST-SEE SIGHTS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY MICHELLE BRUNNER

FLIGHT OF FANCY Modern technology has put inspiration at our fingertips, dissolving traditional boundaries and making even the most remote pockets of the planet feel within reach. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the world of design, where at any given moment, creatives have access to a virtual library of beautiful images and products from around the globe without ever having to leave home. While armchair travel is a lovely way to kill a few hours, sometimes it’s necessary to put down that smartphone, hop on a plane and go see the sights firsthand. After all, there’s no comparison to experiencing the architecture of Marrakesh or Shanghai in person. To that end, we recruited a few of our favorite industry experts to share some of their top international spots for design lovers.

English artist Claire Brewster creates intricate paper sculptures from cut-out maps of the world. Birds in flight are a favorite subject, as in Done and Dusted shown here.

MARRAKESH EXPRESS

One look at her iconic line of carpets and textiles, and you can see the Moroccan inspiration behind Madeline Weinrib’s work. The New York-based designer has been making annual pilgrimages to Marrakesh for nearly 20 years. Below, she presents her top recommendations for shopping and sustenance. madelineweinrib.com

PLACES TO SHOP:

PLACES TO EAT:

33 RUE MAJORELLE Like a smaller version of the legendary Parisian boutique Colette, this open-concept shop just opposite the Majorelle Garden is stocked with an expertly curated collection of clothes, jewelry and art by local designers.

DAR YACOUT Designed by Bill Willis, the late American architect and decorator who helped put Marrakesh on the style map, this dining spot serves a set menu amid dramatic decor. Plan ahead; reservations are a must.

ALNOUR Located in the medina, or old city, this workshop and store is a social enterprise for handicapped women who are skilled in the art of embroidery. They sell exquisite, handmade linens for the home, as well as clothing. EL FENN BOUTIQUE With its impressive art collection and drop-dead gorgeous interiors, El Fenn, from Vanessa Branson, Virgin mogul Richard Branson’s sister, is one of the most stylish stays in the medina. Now, it features an adjoining boutique with an array of wonderful home goods, which can be shipped globally. I’ve collaborated with them on a collection of pillows, and all proceeds from sales benefit a foundation that teaches women to weave in the Atlas Mountains.

LX_COM14_TheReport.indd 180

NOMAD RESTAURANT With a modern menu that features fresh salads, Nomad is my favorite place for lunch in the medina. The café has a lovely terrace that overlooks “spice square,” where you can view all the exotic spice vendors. Bonus: They take craft cocktails seriously here. LALLA French owner Laetitia Trouillet crafts chic handbags—think studded leather clutches—and accessories at this boutique in the hip Guéliz district. Her bags, scarves and headbands make wonderful gifts for friends back home.

DAR MOHA This restaurant was once the home of French designer Pierre Balmain. I like to sit by the pool, but all the rooms are charming. There is a set menu with many courses of Moroccan food, so be prepared for a feast.

MAISON DU KAFTAN Perhaps no article of clothing conjures images of Morocco quite like the free-flowing kaftan. Also located in the medina, this store is stocked with versions of the garment in all colors, styles and price ranges.

BELDI COUNTRY CLUB If you need a peaceful respite from the commotion of the souk, you can’t beat this place for a leisurely swim or a spa treatment. Grab a French-style lunch by the pool—the salade nicoise is divine!

ARTFUL LODGER Jasper Conran has designed women’s fashion, menswear, accessories and home goods, but he’s never attached his name and aesthetic to a hotel—until now. L’Hôtel Marrakech is the British designer’s first foray into luxury lodging. “Opening a hotel has brought together all that I enjoy working on the most: food, textiles, interiors and gardens,” he says. Located in a 19th-century riad (a traditional Moroccan dwelling with an interior courtyard) in the heart of the medina, the otherworldly retreat combines modern-day amenities with oldfashioned glamour. “Marrakesh is a city of amazing contrasts where one can wander along dark alleys and emerge into exquisite gardens and beautiful courtyards,” he says. “I wanted to make L’Hôtel Marrakech a comfortable home, where people feel immediately welcome and happy.” l-hotelmarrakech.com

3 a la mode A half century ago, the desert city of Marrakesh cast a spell over fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, forever influencing his work. To honor that legacy, the long-awaited Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, designed by Studio KO, will open its doors in October. Located on the street bearing his name near the Jardin Marjorelle—the legendary garden that he and longtime partner Pierre Bergé saved from development in 1980—the museum will feature permanent and rotating exhibitions as well as a library, café and restaurant. “This city deeply influenced Yves’ life and work, particularly his discovery of color,” says Bergé. “The Studio KO architects share this passion for Marrakesh and their clean, uncluttered style recalls his work.”

AGAINST THE GRAIN

File this one under happy accidents: Cologne-based designer Meike Harde was staining fabric when some of the pigment spilled onto her wooden worktop, leaving streaks of bold color to run along the grain of the surface. In that moment, her Wooden Aquarelle project was born. Based on a technique once used by German Expressionist painters, Harde’s process of applying color to wood is random, so no two panels are alike. With their intense hues and soft transitions, the panels resemble dreamy, hypnotic watercolors. When applied to furnishings, like the triangular nesting tables seen here, the effect is mesmerizing. meikeharde.com

SHANGHAI SURPRISE

There’s no shortage of personality in Jamie Drake’s glamorous, modern, color-saturated interiors. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that the celebrated New York designer also has a reputation for being quite the bon vivant. What better insider to share his idea of a perfect day in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai? drakeanderson.com 7:30 a.m. Rise and shine at The Peninsula hotel located right on The Bund, the famed waterfront promenade. Enjoy the view of the new city of Pudong across the Huangpu River. From here, I can see the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, an awesome 1,535-foot spire that looks like it came right off the pages of a futuristic comic book. 8:30 a.m. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the lobby, the hotel’s airy and spacious hub. The smoked salmon with a single scrambled egg is perfect, and the breads and pastries from the buffet are hard to resist; though, I do try to limit myself. 10 a.m. I always make time after breakfast for a relaxed morning walk along The Bund to admire the city. It’s a good way to get revved up for the day ahead, and it’s the best time to avoid the massive crowds that descend on the area at

lunchtime. With so many different types of buildings, the neighborhood is a living museum of architectural styles. 12:30 p.m. Off to the Longhua Pagoda and Temple. It features a vegetarian restaurant, which is quite common for an active Buddhist temple. The superb main course is a soup bowl filled with carefully prepared garden delights and noodles. In the nearby entry area, school children learn how to make dumplings. 2 p.m. After lunch, tour the pagoda and temple with one of the monks as a guide. The multiple buildings are filled with spectacular carved and gilded deities. I’m in awe of one of the halls in particular; it’s filled with 500 golden statues. My kind of army—peace-loving and glittering! 3 p.m. Check out more furniture showrooms in the design district around Jiangning Road. Some of the wares are eye-poppingly over-the-top, but there are a few quieter, modern offerings as well. 5:30 p.m. Sneak back to the hotel for a muchneeded rest and pre-dinner nap. 8 p.m. If you grow weary of Asian food, opt for French food at the sensational bistro Franck, located in the French Concession neighborhood.

By this time, a martini up with a twist is sorely needed, and much enjoyed. When I’m there, I order a traditional Gallic meal and wash it down with a light Beaujolais. For dessert: rich and decadent chocolate mousse. 10:45 p.m. Lights out—until the next time. Xie Xie!

INSIDE STORY For over 20 years, Kerry Phelan has been a leading force in the Melbourne design scene, creating elegant spaces that are understated but luxurious. Here, she gives us the scoop on her effortlessly hip hometown. kpdo.com

What quality makes Melbourne design unique? Melbourne has a different feel than Sydney. It has a colder climate, and it’s moodier; whereas, Sydney is all about the sunshine and the harbor. Our design always nods to our natural environment. Why do you think the city is having a moment? The influx of a lot of new restaurants, cafés and bars has given designers a chance to be more adventurous. Also, the residential property market is extremely competitive—developers not only employ designers as a marketing tool, but also to promote a Melbourne lifestyle. Finally, there’s Instagram, which is creating its own, universal visual language, bringing Australian design to an international audience.

DRAMATIC TURN Sydney designer Greg Natale, known for his fondness of bold colors and geometric patterns, has won international acclaim for his tailored, sophisticated interiors. Read on for his take on design in the land down under. gregnatale.com What sets Australian design apart? I think our geography has helped to create our own “international” style. We’re influenced by our traditional European roots, but we also admire the creativity and industriousness of America. Factor in our proximity to Asia and our mild climate, and you can see how Australian design has evolved into its own thing.

the Art Gallery of New South Wales, which is next to the Royal Botanic Gardens, or the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, which is nestled on the shores of Sydney Harbor. It may sound clichéd, but if you’re ever in town, you must visit the Sydney Opera House to see a show and take in the amazing architecture by Jørn Utzon.

Favorite Aussie designers past and present: I am a big admirer of the late architect Harry Seidler. His work was ahead of its time and his career spanned many decades. His projects weren’t always warmly received, but his provocative work defined a style and an era of Australian architecture.

Dream project: I would love to try my hand at a private jet—who wouldn’t! There’s a challenge in creating a chic interior with so many restrictions on space and functionality.

Must-see sites when visiting Sydney: As an art lover, I always make sure to drop into

LX_COM14_TheReport.indd 209

Favorite local design brands: Chris Connell Design is brilliant for all things furniture, product, interiors and architecture; he’s been a driving force over the last 25 years for original design. And Bruce Rowe from Anchor Ceramics does phenomenal sculpture and planter vessels.

Up next: I recently launched a collection of decorative glass mosaic tiles with Italian brand Bisazza. I also did a new collection of hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk rugs, and I’ve got new housewares out later this year.

T

here is, without doubt, a bit of an old soul in interior designer Bea Pila. How else would you explain a passion for vintage, timeworn patinas and a fancy for acrylic and midcentury modern; an understanding and equal reverence for Andrea Palladio and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; and a love of such formidable designers as Sister Parish, Dorothy Draper and Mark Hampton? Add to that a penchant for vibrant palettes that feed off her Cuban heritage and one can see how new and trendy are definitely not on the designer’s go-to style list. It’s no surprise, then, that all the homes in which Pila has lived have had some age—a fact that caused some trepidation when she and her architect-builder husband, Carlos Gonzalez-Ochoa, decided to build a new home from the ground up in Coconut Grove. “I have never lived in a brand-new home,” Pila says. “I grew up with thick cement and terrazzo floors, and my husband and I lived in an old gabled Spanish bungalow from 1926 and then a midcentury ranch.”

A trip to Tuscany with friends cemented the design of their home. “It’s very easy to be seduced by the beauty of Tuscany,” Pila says. “Walking through the olive groves and vineyards and then seeing all these original materials and elements really made a deep impression on us and primed our inspiration.” So, she took mental notes of the Venetian plaster, graceful arches and terra-cotta floors as examples for the type of ambience she and her husband wanted to recreate in their own home: a mix of architecture and materials that evoked the old yet with all the conveniences of present day. Despite its nearly 5,000 square feet, the house has an intimacy that is apparent from the entry courtyard. “The lot is long and narrow,” says Gonzalez-Ochoa, who cites the home’s footprint situated on a north-south axis as an opportunity to maximize the side and backyards with landscaping for privacy. “The front garden is super charming and lush,” Pila adds. “When you walk into the space, with its stone fountain and brick paving, you are transported into another world.”

Interior designer Bea Pila and her husband—architect and builder Carlos Gonzalez-Ochoa—worked under the guidance of friend and landscape architect Orlando Comas to design the landscaping plan for their own Coconut Grove home, such as in the charming front courtyard that includes heliconias, ginger and a range of palms. Cardboard palms in pots flank the entry, while the path is paved with old Chicago bricks, which Pila selected for their aged quality.

A quartet of columns beneath a vaulted ceiling visually separates the living and dining rooms and keeps the spaces open. Draperies made in a sheer fabric with wide satin stripes by P/Kaufmann are mounted high in the living room, while in the foyer, the tortoiseshell-glass lantern is from Currey & Company. The Italian Noce travertine floor was purposely unfilled to give it a rustic look.

Many years ago, Pila negotiated to get her price on a breakfront she fell in love with. It now sits in the dining room and is filled with a glass collection from the couple’s international travels. For Pila, it’s all about color: The light blue with navy rim vessel is from the Clignancourt flea market in Paris, and the orange-and-white one is from an Atlanta antiques mall; on top is a grouping with a fish motif from Global Views in High Point. The acrylic on paper landscape (on top of the cabinet) is from Sweden; the other piece is a Cuban pastel.

The dining room’s Malachite wallcovering from Cole & Son’s Fornasetti collection is a stunning backdrop for a painting by Honduran artist Julio Visquerra. A midcentury-style chandelier that Pila purchased in Venice from Barovier & Toso’s Murano studio hangs over an 80-inch table with a live-edge tree trunk base from Costa Rica and diamond-backed mahogany chairs.

In the kitchen, woven-abaca barstools from Padma’s Plantation pull up to a granite-clad island, which Pila painted black to ground the white cabinets; the backsplash is 5/8-inch tumbled Noce travertine, the same stone as the floor, in a mosaic pattern. Pendant lights are suspended from supporting cedar timbers via a modern stainless-steel cable system from Bruck, while grass cloth on one wall and an old kilim lend both texture and character.

LX_MIA15_HOM_Pila_14_.indd 220

5/18/17 5:38 PM

The couple forwent a breakfast room in favor of a more practical bar. Pila found vintage bark cloth in Key West to cover the midcentury bamboo stools and banded the cushions with raffia and nailheads. The bar is by Theodore Alexander; on the walls is a Madagascar vinyl-raffia from Phillip Jeffries.

Inside is a surprisingly open plan, deftly defined by classical columns punctuating a central corridor that spills into adjacent spaces. “The extra square footage from the hallways is gathered and becomes part of the rooms,” says Gonzalez-Ochoa. Eleven-foot ceilings allow the rooms to breathe and live large, while Italian Noce travertine, which was purposely left unfilled with a distressed chiseled edge, covers the floors and continues to the outdoors, where Palladian arches frame a dreamy loggia. When it came time for the furnishings, Pila, who proselytizes Mies’ “God in the details,” chose to forgo the architect’s less-is-more mantra. For the designer, more is more, and that means an evolving canvas, one packed with treasured acquisitions from travels, flea markets and thrift shops in an array of disparate collections. For example, an assemblage of porcelain Foo dogs that she has been luxesource.com / 221

A blend of styles continues in the family room, where rustic unfinished ceiling beams mix with such modern furnishings as Pila’s own acrylic Player’s chair, inspired by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The stained glass by a Colombian leaded-glass artist is an homage to the designer’s Cuban roots, and the mushroom-shaped ottomans are clad in more kilims.

collecting for 15 years, some of which are 70 years old, fill a cabinet in the living room, while an assortment of colorful handblown glass vessels take residence in the dining room. Also in the living room is a massive gallery wall that dominates a space behind the sofa. “It’s a hodgepodge,” Pila admits. “There’s a painting by my grandmother, etchings from an artist in the Keys, watercolors from Florence and pieces from thrift stores.” For Pila, it’s all about layering—and celebrating the handcrafted. “I love things made by hand,” she says. “There is so much beauty in the artisanal, where things aren’t perfect—and yet they are.” She and her husband recently switched out their dining table, for instance, for one that pairs a simple but sizable 80-inch-square glass top over a rugged tree trunk from Costa Rica, and in the family room, the eye is drawn to the bold geometry on the half-circle stained-glass windows, an homage to the stained glass prevalent in homes in Cuba’s 19th century. The designer even snapped up an entire lot of 100 vintage suzanis from a local dealer in one of those impulse buys she rarely regrets—the richly patterned textiles now appear on upholstery, bedding and pillows throughout. Indeed,

color touches almost every room—from the bright malachite design in the dining room and Tuscan red frescoed walls in the master bedroom to furnishings of Pila’s own design, such as the family room’s modern acrylic lounge chair with a canary yellow cushion. In a recent kitchen update, however, the designer quieted cherry cabinets by painting them white with a satin sheen. A touch of modern lighting hung from stainless-steel cables is juxtaposed with the room’s rustic cedar timbers. Pila credits growing up in a talented household as the stimulus that paved the path to her creativity: Her grandmother was an artist, her father and grandfather owned a glass, glazing and framing company, and her mother, she says, “just had amazingly good taste.” Even daughter Gabi is an accomplished designer who has collaborated on furniture collections with her mom. Fortunately, the whole family is on the same design page, with Gonzalez-Ochoa approving and admiring his wife’s eclectic, albeit sometimes flamboyant, touches. “Some people say I’m ahead of the trends, but I call it being connected to the design universe,” Pila says. “Design has the ability to influence the soul and elevate us to another level, and that’s what I wanted to do for my own home.”

Above: Lush tropical foliage is visible through the arches of the room-size loggia. Pila’s Pangea sectionals are made of Brazilian teak with acrylic backs; the patterned pillows are clad in an indoor fabric from Osborne & Little. Opposite: The loggia’s Pick Me Up swinging bench, designed by Pila in collaboration with daughter Gabi, features a cushion topped with a Sunbrella stripe. The small acrylic table with a blue top is also a custom design by Pila, and the lightweight concrete table is by Seasonal Living. Japanese-style lanterns hang on the columns.

tep inside L’Appartement Concept Store in Wynwood and immediately you’ll be transported from the sweltering streets of Miami into a cool-girl Parisian apartment oozing with style. In fact, the store, owned by French interior designer Emmanuelle Bernard, is curated and arranged in such a way that visitors move from one room to the next—much like touring a chic flat in Bernard’s native Paris—with each space showcasing furniture, home decor and art, all with a certain je ne sais quoi. After moving to Miami from the Alps with her husband and daughter in 2015, Bernard was struck by how much the city was in the process of growth and development, and how the creative industries were providing some of the major contributions to this movement. But she realized the region lacked in one major area. “In terms of furniture, the new European wave was pretty limited,” she says. And so, L’Appartement was born. An amalgamation of cutting-edge home decor pieces and old-world classics, the store features furniture, lighting and decorative objects all from European designers, many of which have never been available before in the United States—much less South Florida. But L’Appartement is more than just a home store. Bernard transforms the walls into gallery space, displaying contemporary works by such new and local artists as German photographer Christian Richter and Miami-based painter Richard Tojdowski; she’s currently assembling a series of limited-edition posters from Denmark’s Paper Collective to showcase over the summer,

along with a series of her own limited-edition posters. Bernard has been a practicing artist for more than 20 years, stemming from her background in set design, which helped her foray into interior design, painting and photography. “Home and set design are similar in that you have to imagine that you’re the client or the character in order to create the perfect setting,” she says. “In either case, it’s always about telling a story.” As for her private home, Bernard has created her own stylish story by mixing iconic pieces from the likes of Le Corbusier, Charles and Ray Eames and Charlotte Perriand with items from more contemporary designers including Alain Gilles and Constance Guisset. “It took me years to create my personal

environment—a union of different periods and styles,” she says. “But this is what makes it feel so lively and strong, and it’s the way I give it character to make it my own.” Bernard’s style comes through in each room in the store, complete with an entryway, living room, dining room and a child’s room. She explains that the typical Parisian apartment is a mix of retro, chic and avant-garde pieces. Where in Miami, by contrast, very white, sleek interiors reign supreme. So, Bernard encourages her customers to combine this cool Miami aesthetic with the warmer colors and materials inspired by European design to achieve a more inviting atmosphere—an eclectic mix that makes L’Appartement so decidedly fresh and French. luxesource.com / 233

magine two grandparents (he’s a doctor and she’s a music conductor), their two sons and daughters-inlaw (three doctors and one lawyer among them) and eight grandchildren (ages 3-12) all living on the same block in Weston and sharing not one but two vacation homes to which they routinely travel en masse. No, this is not the elevator pitch for a new sitcom but the very real-life version of how three generations of one family live and spend time together. Now envision what it would be like to be the person given the task of creating a home suitable for those 14 people. That was the position Colorado-based interior designer Tracie Schumacher found herself in eight years ago when she was tapped to assist with the family’s first multigenerational attempt—a ski retreat in Vail, Colorado. “I had never done a project involving this many people before, and establishing a trust level while deciphering everyone’s needs were critical parts of the job,” she says. Clearly Schumacher succeeded, because when the families decided to expand their vacation holdings to include a beach house in Key Largo’s private Ocean Reef community, they again turned to their trusted designer. “They felt I had a real understanding of how they like to live,” she says. “But I’ve spent most of my career referencing the mountains, so working on a seaside residence offered a whole new set of challenges, especially when it came to the construction.” First, the domicile was woefully short on bedrooms. According to one of the daughters-in-law, the original intent was to do just a modest remodel. “Before long, we thought if we’re going to do this, we should do it right, and pretty soon we were knocking down walls and gutting the kitchen,” she says. The result was the perfect balance of three master suites (two on the upper level and one on the main floor), adequate sleeping quarters for all eight children, including a bunkroom to accommodate sleepovers, the addition of a family office and a kitchen renovation that now provides enough space to seat everyone at once. But despite its expanded floor plan and enviable water locale that includes canals on two sides, the house still suffered from a lack of personality and character. In response, Schumacher worked with architect Robert A. Richard and

“THE FRESH AND CLEAN LOOK WITH A SHOT OF COLOR OUTSIDE PREPARES YOU FOR THE BEACHY FEEL INSIDE.” –TRACIE SCHUMACHER

general contractor James Gregory to add stone cladding to the exterior stucco walls and fish-scale shingle siding over the garage to introduce texture. To further break up the stark white façade and add some visual oomph, the eaves were painted a soothing teal. “The fresh and clean look with a shot of color outside prepares you for the beachy feel inside,” she says. To elevate the overall look of the interiors, Schumacher, who also has a background in interior architecture, again collaborated with Richard and Gregory on the home’s millwork. In the entry and main-level living spaces, for example, new trusses and ceiling beams stained a driftwood color add warmth and depth. “When you look down to the kitchen and see the rafters, it looks like the hull of a ship,” Schumacher says. The introduction of vaulted ceilings in the second-story bedrooms proved equally transformative. As Richard explains, “The rooms were relatively small, and they all had flat ceilings, so changing the height and shape really had a dramatic effect.” The now nine-bedroom house stood ready to be appointed. “I was excited to explore hues and textiles I rarely get to use in the mountains, but I also had to learn about what worked here in South Florida, which is usually more color,” says Schumacher, whose immediate thought was blue, red and yellow. “But, because the owners live in the area full time, they didn’t want the same old beach shades. They threw out the idea of adding purple, and I took it from there.” The royal hue emerged as a background player, making appearances on the dining room chairs and on rugs and accessories in the grandparents’ master suite. But it is shades of blue, an inevitable response to the water, that dominate. In the living room, a commodious Belgian linen sectional topped with an assortment of turquoise, navy and cerulean pillows offsets a pair of Thos. Moser recliners reminiscent of deck chairs. The navy leather on the chairs ties to the stripe in the room’s indoor-outdoor rug, which in turn connects to the stained aqua panels that wrap the staircase and the shimmery pastel blue backsplash reminiscent of shells in the kitchen. Nautical accents provide another layer of connective tissue with boat-cleat towel hangers in the bunk bathroom and a papier-mâché light fixture resembling a fishing basket with little oars in the living room. The theme continues with a rope light fixture in the dining room, blown-glass orbs encased in what looks like fishing net in one of the guest quarters and healthy doses of art depicting all manner of sea life seen throughout. According to Schumacher, both the multigenerational concept and design theme work because everyone has a space of his or her own but everything functions as a cohesive whole. “It doesn’t feel like nine distinct bedrooms because all the spaces talk to each other,” the designer says. “The beams and ceiling treatments give the house a sense of history, but it’s the pops of color that make it fresh and modern and tie everything together.”

For the entry of this Key Largo home, interior designer Tracie Schumacher collaborated with architect Robert Richard and general contractor James Gregory on the design and installation of the beams and trusses from Wood Zone; new hurricane-resistant doors open to the space. A lantern from The Well Appointed House hangs over a blue-and-white West Elm rug that helps establish the home’s color palette.

Pillows from Wisteria as well as custom ones on the RH sectional evoke the color of the waterway visible from the living room. Behind the sofa, a pair of glass lamps by Arteriors continues the water-inspired palette, while the wood coffee table from Cottage & Bungalow mimics the driftwood-stained ceiling beams. A white Savanna side table by Noir and Thos. Moser recliners join the setting to rest on a Perennials rug; a Midas chandelier by Fisher Weisman hangs above.

Schumacher designed the staircase to be wrapped in blue-stained-pine panels from Wood Zone, creating an interesting backdrop for a cozy, out-of-the-way gathering spot, which includes cushy indigo chairs by Lee Industries and a durable rug by Perennials. In the corner, a Mariella lamp rests on an Emmett table, both from Arteriors. Here and throughout the house, the floors are white oak from Arrigoni Woods.

Designer Sofia Joelsson created a custom sectional for the living room, covering the body in a Holly Hunt cream leather and the cushions in a plusher Holly Hunt woven fabric. Joining the sofa is a Serge de Troyer coffee table with a parchment-andwalnut finish. Hanging next to the marble fireplace is Nothing Tastes as Good as Skinny Feels by Alejandro Vigilante.

hat’s the drawback of having a museumworthy art collection? It can often make your home feel like a museum—and that’s exactly what homeowner and philanthropist Stephen Macricostas did not want for his oceanfront condominium. Situated on Ocean Drive in South Beach, the two-story apartment features an impressive collection of Pop and contemporary art by the likes of Michael Moebius, Renaud Delorme and Jonathan Paul, among others, which Stephen has been acquiring for years. The home is also set right on the water. So, the trick for designer Sofia Joelsson, who was tasked with the project’s interiors, was to give equal play to the dominant art collection while complementing the views outside. “Stephen wanted the art to speak for itself, yet he also wanted a very comfortable home,” Joelsson says. “So in every piece we selected or custom-made, we very much had comfort in mind, all with a palette that had a connection to the surrounding beach and the sand.” Joelsson met Stephen about 12 years ago when the two were neighbors in another South Beach condo complex. There, Joelsson had designed at least 20 apartments, including the penthouse, which had what Stephen calls “a wow factor,” and he wanted to use that space as a benchmark for his new home. Unlike his other homes in Manhattan and Costa Rica, Stephen wanted this one, his permanent residence, to be more contemporary. And once they began working together, the designer and homeowner discovered that they were kindred spirits when it came to matters of taste. Says Stephen: “Sometimes I’d earmark pages in magazines that I liked, and she’d say, ‘Honey, that’s my work.’ ”

Getting the dining room’s wall of gray-washed-oak veneer to surround the fish tank was tricky. “Plumbing, exhaust ventilation and cabinetry needed to be exact,” Vaisberg says. “There was little room to maneuver.”

Because the striking art collection was going to be front and center, Joelsson chose a soft sandy palette reflective of the oceanfront setting that wouldn’t interfere with the color and vitality of the works. Nevertheless, most of the rooms have a pop of color, whether it’s a bold purple in one of the bedroom suites or a deep blue in the powder room. Placement of the art, as well as lighting, also became allimportant, along with “tons of built-ins and millwork,” says Joelsson, who designed all the interior architecture, from the cabinetry to the fireplaces. “We took into consideration every single location where art could be displayed to make sure it had adequate lighting.”

Such considerations came into play in the living room, where a niche accommodates Marilyn Crying, a Russell Young screen print; it’s backlit with light coves that create a soft glow. In addition to accentuating the painting, the lighting serves a practical purpose. “Because the sofa is right there, we didn’t want the light to be in anyone’s eyes,” Joelsson says. “So the illumination comes more from behind, rather than above.” More works, including Delorme’s Miss America and Moebius’ Tiffany Blue, line a long hallway that leads from the front foyer to the guest suites toward the back of the home, forming the perfect gallery. “We literally tried to utilize every single wall space we had,” Joelsson says. But choosing which luxesource.com / 259

work would go where proved difficult. Even after carefully identifying the ideal spot for a piece, the designer sometimes made modifications based on color and the way it interacted with the furnishings and other works. Case in point: Bradley Hart’s Michael, a portrait of Michael Jackson made from paint-injected bubble wrap, was originally headed for the master bedroom. Instead, Joelsson hung it in a more public spot—the family room. “It really needs to be seen,” Stephen says. “It can now be appreciated by everybody.” That factor was important to Stephen, a gregarious host who does a lot of entertaining. Joelsson kept that in mind when designing the lower level, where the family room is primed for guests with a wine cellar, bar, deep U-shaped blue velvet sectional by Cudesso and 120-inch flat-screen television for movie night. “Initially, that room had a bit of disconnect from the rest of the spaces, with a few beams that looked out of place,” Joelsson says. So, the designer, along with general contractor Alan Vaisberg, rebuilt the ceiling with coffers and placed light coves within each of the grids. The ceiling now adds architectural interest without detracting from the bold art and furnishings.

Art was so important to this project that Vaisberg, working with architect Jose Gonzalez on city permits and revisions, had to redesign the heating and air conditioning system to accommodate it, including moving the main air return that originally took up an entire wall of the gallery hallway to a smaller rectangular return that is now located toward the ceiling. Another challenge was placing a tank of tropical fish within a wall of custom cabinetry in the dining room. As if a 7-foot tank weren’t enough, Joelsson placed colored coral within it, upping the style quotient. “It really turned into this spectacular live artwork piece,” she observes. Stephen couldn’t be happier. The overall look— elegant and relaxed yet contemporary and “very South Beach”—was just what he had envisioned. “You walk in, and the art just grabs you; the whole style grabs you,” he says. “It’s very elegant, but at the same time you’re not afraid to sit down on the couch and take off your shoes. It doesn’t feel like a museum, and people aren’t afraid to touch anything. It’s exactly what I wanted and more.”

The master bathroom is lined almost entirely in marble and includes an extra-wide shower and cabinetry by Idea Group, which were both original to the home.

INSPIRATION FOUND

VIVA HAVANA! WHILE DECADES HAVE PASSED SINCE CUBA’S INITIAL TOURISM HEYDAY, THE TIMEWORN YET ELEGANT NATION—STILL RIFE WITH CULTURAL AND EXOTIC ALLURE— IS ONCE AGAIN MAKING WAVES AS THE TOP DESTINATION ON EVERYONE’S TRAVEL LIST. BEREFT OF MODERN INTRUSION, THE COUNTRY’S CAPITAL CITY HAS UNDERGONE LITTLE CHANGE IN EITHER ATMOSPHERE OR ARCHITECTURE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, AND THE WAY THAT IT CAPTURES A MOMENT IN TIME BRINGS ABOUT A FASCINATING SENSE OF BEAUTY AND INTRIGUE. THE ITEMS FOUND ON THIS PAGE CELEBRATE THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND TROPICAL SETTING OF THIS REINVIGORATED ISLAND. Clockwise from top right: Charlotte / $6.90 per tile / cementtileshop.com. Interiors of the Palacio Cantero Museum in Trinidad, Cuba. Niceia Chinese Pot / $595 / vistaalegre.com.
