BERNHARDT

NEOLITH

Bernhardt combines inspiration and technical skill with this wholly unique modern art piece. The Barcelona credenza is hand-carved from reclaimed teak—a process that can take up to a day to complete—then hand-clad, in minute relief, in German silver. Measures 34"H x 72"W x 18"D.

Neolith’s new Strata Argentum is inspired by silver travertine marble. Defined by its delicate, horizontally veined white and silver lines, it mimics the beauty of the marble in a durable, low-maintenance sintered compact surface for countertops, flooring, walls and more.

INSPIRATION

Eldorado Stone has been at the forefront of its industry for the past 45 years. From its humble beginnings to the international presence it boasts today, Eldorado’s core philosophy has remained the same—believability. Each of the company’s natural ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ Ăƒ Ă€iÂŤ V>ĂŒi` ĂŒ ĂŒ i w iĂƒĂŒ `iĂŒ> Ăƒ v ĂŒiĂ?ĂŒĂ•Ă€i > ` V Ă€] ĂžiĂŒ offers a lightweight, concrete stone veneer solution. VARIABLE OFFERINGS Inspiration is key to Eldorado Stone’s culture. Every product is designed to evoke a unique sense of space, whether modern, traditional or highly rustic. With 150-plus colors and numerous textures and shapes from which to choose, architects and designers are able to inspire their customers with limitless applications.

MODERN DESIGN The newest of Eldorado’s extensive options, the Modern Collection features 34 new colors and 6 new profiles. Developed to accentuate contemporary `iĂƒ } Ăƒ] ĂŒ iĂƒi ĂƒĂŒ iĂƒ ÂŤ> Ă€ Ă€iw i` V Ă€ Ăœ ĂŒ V i> iĂƒ ĂŒ L i ` Ă€ V ĂŒĂ€>ĂƒĂŒ with neighboring elements. The results are spaces that come alive, speak for themselves and take center stage. Proof that less truly can be more.

Eldorado Stone’s philosophy creates authentic architectural products that transform spaces through color and texture.

ARTISANAL CRAFTSMANSHIP Eldorado Stone products are handcrafted through a detail-oriented, laborintensive process. Each stone is hand-painted by master artisans, infusing multiple layers of color to the stone’s unique textured surface to create a highly authentic appearance.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Around the time that we were shaping up this issue, dedicated to outdoor living, the headlines were buzzing about a United Nations study that wild pollinators in certain regions, especially bees, birds and butterflies, are in jeopardy of extinction. I shook my head in dismay and turned to the next headline. Then, as I started to review layouts and finalize the pages for this issue, many of which displayed stunning gardens and landscapes, I thought more about those bumblebees, monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. The headlines seemed dire and on a global scale, yet I wondered if I could play some tiny part to contribute a solution (while also imparting more splendor to the landscape). The answer was a resounding yes! Though truth be told, as a black-thumb wannabe gardener, I tasked my green-thumb husband with planting our new butterfly garden of black-eyed Susans, gaillardia and coral honeysuckles. As appreciators of good design, immersed in an industry dedicated to shaping and enhancing the environment, we should take an active role in the creation and protection of beauty—from helping to preserve historic buildings, to decorating interior spaces that spread joy, to planting gardens that will grow lush and healthy. I hope that this issue brings you not only inspiration and pleasure, but also encourages you to dig deep into the ground and plant a seed.

BEHIND THE SCENES GET TO KNOW A FEW OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY AS THEY TALK ALL THINGS DESIGN. PRODUCED BY SARAH RAMIREZ

Photographer / New York

YELENA MOROZ ALPERT

Writer / Washington, D.C.

Name one individual that you wish you could have interviewed. Georgia O’Keeffe. It was her paintings of New York skyscrapers that first made me pay attention to architecture. What’s intriguing you now in the world of design? I love how it’s a reflection of us or maybe even what we aspire to be. You can really tell a lot about someone by entering his or her home. Most interesting person you’ve ever met: My dad, Leonid Moroz. He is a neuroscientist and the amount of knowledge he packs into his own brain is beyond me. He can talk about neurons, then seamlessly transition into a conversation about the history of the Russian Revolution. If money were no object, I would buy… A quilted Chanel bag. It’s a classic fashion piece, and every time I wore it I would hope that some of Coco Chanel’s genius would rub off on me.

ELAINE MARKOUTSAS Writer / Chicago Most memorable interview: With Dutch designer Piet Oudolf that took place at his Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Besides being enchanted by his brilliant views on perennial landscapes and the almost-Impressionistic painting before us, the Grant Park Orchestra was rehearsing nearby and the sun was starting to peek out of a heavy fog—it doesn’t get much better than that. Design style: Because I’m exposed to so much, I sometimes find it difficult to pick a lane. I live in a 1890s Victorian house that has an addition many describe as Tuscan, but my living room blends a bit of Paris Moderne with old-world European. Somehow, though, it all works. Prized possessions: A still life above my dining room fireplace. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Florence, Italy, and lusted over it the entire trip home. As soon as I was able to, I called the gallery and purchased it. Also, the ice blue-and-goldsilk Fortuny chandelier that hangs in my bedroom, because… Fortuny.

KATE BENSON Photographer / Miami If you could shoot anywhere in the U.S., where would it be? Somewhere in Hawaii. I’ve shot there before, but I will find any excuse to go back. Dream home: A historic house in downtown Charleston. It’s my new city, and I am gushing over the architecture! What other types of design styles are you drawn to? Repurposed architecture. I love seeing how a space can transform into a new one. Whether it’s an old barn or shipping containers converted into homes, the subject just fascinates me. And, if there are exposed elements of what the structure used to be, that’s a bonus! Who is the most fascinating person you know? Probably my son, but then again I may be biased. I didn’t spend much time around children before having one, and the way he sees the world, strings together ideas, thinks and moves so freely, it’s both amazing and inspiring.

MCCLURE HEADSHOT: HORACIO SALINAS. VIGNETTE PHOTO: JOANNA MCCLURE. MARKOUTSAS HEADSHOT: EVAN LEROUX. BENSON HEADSHOT: COURTESY KATE BENSON. ALPERT HEADSHOT: COURTESY YELENA MOROZ ALPERT.

Favorite Luxe shoot: The most recent ones in this issue’s “Spotlight,” “Material” and “Radar” sections. Working with the floral designers at Putnam & Putnam was fantastic, and all of those gorgeous jewels were so inspiring! My dream job would be… To photograph a campaign for Spanish fashion house Loewe. I think what they are doing is incredible. What do you find inspiring about design today? I love that there is such variety right now, especially with young creatives who are pushing the boundaries. Top three things on your wish list: It would have to be a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubbles chain chandelier, a Loewe Flamenco knot bag in baby blue and any piece from Cardinal’s Fall/Winter collection.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

WITH A MINIMAL TAKE ON AL FRESCO LIVING, RH MODERN TAPS A STAR-STUDDED ROSTER OF CREATIVES FOR THE BRAND’S FIRST OUTDOOR LINEUP. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY ARLYN HERNANDEZ

With the launch of RH Modern this past fall, Gary Friedman had one thing top of mind: Create a new platform for modern home furnishings. The new brand “addresses the underserved and fragmented market for the modern consumer,” notes the Chairman and CEO of RH (formally Restoration Hardware). “In its sensibility, it has the same DNA of RH, but the spirit of the product comes from a very new forward-looking perspective.” One concept that remains evergreen for the company is sourcing from a register of high-profile international designers, integrating their creative viewpoints to render fresh ideas. “It all starts with the work,” states Friedman. “We respond to great work and find the people behind it.” Such talents include venerable architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, outdoor furniture vets Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, and hospitality aficionado Ann Marie Vering—their diverse aesthetics coalescing with those of the master curators at RH Modern to furnish a number of the brand’s newest outdoor offerings. Here, we explore a few of the less-is-more fresh-air collections, just in time for summer.

RADAR / COLLABORATION

HARRISON CONDOS AND NICHOLAS CONDOS

Collections: Aegean, Mustique Brothers Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos, the Australian duo behind outdoor furniture company Harbour Outdoor, effortlessly translate their innovative designs into three collections for RH Modern. Welcome party: Everything we design is inspired by the rich landscapes and made for the harsh climates of Australia, where living spaces are quite airy, and understated design is celebrated. Material makeup: Aluminum is our area of expertise, so naturally, we used it for our collections. It’s ultra-lightweight and has excellent finishing characteristics. Playing house: Our furniture would look right at home in an architecturally restrained beach house along the coast of Sydney or California. Favorite piece: The Aegean sofa. It’s so simple, lineal and versatile. Even in the winter when it’s time to take in the cushions, the sectionals are still going to look great due to the minimalistic aluminum slats.

ANN MARIE VERING

A resume bulleted with five-star resorts and spas spanning every hemisphere makes Ann Marie Vering a pro in setting the scene for relaxation. The Los Angeles-based creative taps her nomadic spirit as her muse when designing her inviting collections.

LEO MARMOL AND RON RADZINER

Collection: Bardenas The principals at leading modern architecture firm Marmol Radziner are no strangers to product design, having had forays in jewelry and furniture. The architects employ a streamlined yet pioneering approach to everything that comes out of their L.A. office, their first offerings for RH Modern being no exception. Get inspired: As the collection was originally conceived for our prefab Desert House in Desert Hot Springs, California, we were trying to reflect both the minimalist beauty of the desert landscape and the simple geometries of the structure. Modus operandi: Our approach is always the same no matter what we’re designing—to emphasize natural materials and craftsmanship. Playing house: We see these pieces in a home that is informed by the site and has a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Favorite piece: The Bardenas chaise. Its unadorned form embodies the clean, crisp lines and low profile that we were seeking with this collection.

Law of attraction: RH Modern is delivering accessibility to shoppers who want high-end modern design, and I’m drawn to that. Get inspired: I lived and worked in Bali and am extremely moved by its indoor-outdoor lifestyle, so I try to evoke its cool, simplistic vibe with all the outdoor furniture I design. Material makeup: Teak is one of the most beautiful woods in the world and perfect for outdoor environments. I added brass detailing—inspired by the stripes on vintage Tag Heuer watches—on the Paros collection for added detail. Lounge suite: The Cypress collection is extra-deep, forcing you to lounge, not sit up. I try to offer up design that is inviting. Playing house: If Tom Ford had a home in Bali, I would hope these collections would be in there; a modern house made of lava rock and concrete, overlooking the southern shores.

Clockwise from top right: The Paros round side table, designed by Ann Marie Vering; Marmol Radziner's Bardenas lounge chair; and the Mustique aluminum sofa by Harrison Condos and Nicholas Condos.

NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HER SECOND COLLECTION WITH THE RUG COMPANY, DESIGN DOYENNE ALEXANDRA CHAMPALIMAUD IMPLORES A VISCERAL AND SOPHISTICATED APPROACH WITH TWO NEW STUNNING INTRODUCTIONS. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATE BERGERON PORTRAIT BY RENÉ CERVANTES

Getting started: I began searching for inspiration in graphic works and by observing movement in all different forms. Dahlia, inspired by the ancient flower, has a whimsical, subtle quality, while Shadow is a result of moving disks around a wall and projecting light to create these alluring, moody shapes.

Better together: My fascination with design and craftsmanship began in Portugal in the 1970s, where I studied and learned 18th-century methods in a workshop where pieces were crafted of incredible value. As a result, I hold craftsmanship in the highest regard. It’s an extremely personal gesture, the purest form of artistry human beings can create. The Rug Company travels to and from Nepal to seek out and work with these extremely talented people, those who singlehandedly give magic to a product we all put in our homes. Our harmonious ideologies make for a perfect partnership, and for products I love to include in all of my jobs. Products vs. projects: I believe that product design and interiors actually go hand-in-hand as they somewhat follow the same process. As a creative, there isn’t a moment I don’t envisage objects in three dimensions, or a moment

that I don’t imagine a completed space and the response I want it to evoke. A rug of one’s own: The beauty of these handknotted Nepalese rugs, made of Tibetan wool, is the depth and the soul that the texture alone brings to a room. Each one is a labor of love, and when placed in a space, they take on a life of their own.

RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY THE RUG COMPANY.

On nature: Nature played a major role in developing my most recent rug designs; beyond this collection, it’s what grounds me everyday and influences my work continuously. In today’s world, we live in an extremely complex environment, and I’m seeing an increasing need to surround ourselves with beautiful things that are both inspired and gentle. And so, influenced by the excitement of flowers and intrigue of light, Dahlia and Shadow (shown at right, top and bottom respectively) came to be very fluidly.

RADAR / BEHIND THE BRAND

FORM + VISION

ROCHE BOBOIS’ CREATIVE DIRECTOR HAS INVIGORATED THE VENERABLE BRAND WITH A SERIES OF DYNAMIC COLLABORATIONS, TURNING IT INTO A GLOBAL FORCE WITH A DISTINCTLY FRENCH TWIST.

To hear Nicolas Roche tell it, studying Carolingian structures and 14th-century Gothic sculpture—a nod to his days as a student preparing for a career in architecture—and serving as Roche Bobois’ creative director share some remarkable similarities. “It’s all related to volumes,” he reports. “Learning about them helps in dealing with forms and shapes, which I still do.” After practicing architecture for some 20 years, Roche assumed his role at the family business in 2005, bringing along his feeling for form, and guiding the stylish French brand through a series of compelling collaborations with a range of designers, beginning with Christophe Delcourt and the late Cédric Ragot (“He really moved us in the direction of innovative product,” notes Roche) and continuing with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni Home. Roche’s designer collaborations tend to grow organically. Beyond the landmark collections with notable names that happen every few years, there are also frequent collaborations with established and new faces. To identify those talents, Roche often visits fairs and looks through plenty of print sources. And, in the last few years, another source has proved to be a wellspring of talent. “The Internet allows me to spontaneously connect with designers,” he says, via sites focusing on architecture, contemporary art and style. Regardless of how he hits on a future collaborator, “I’m

interested in an original point of view, a surprising and different approach,” he explains. “More than a finished product, I look for the possibility of a project, the promise of a creative process.” Each collaboration is truly that, with Roche serving as part of a powerful form-perfecting trifecta: the core group of which involves him and the company’s in-house productdevelopment teams, the designer and the prototype manufacturer working with a backand-forth exchange. One recent collaboration— with Stephen Burks—grew out of a meeting in a Paris café and led last year to the Traveler collection’s American and European armchairs. This year’s iteration of the Traveler looks to Asia, with a complete outdoor collection marked by tubular steel structures wrapped with colorful cord. “It’s a traveling collection for a traveling designer,” Roche notes. While the firm’s pieces range from the cushy, aptly named Bubble seating, curved Iride tables and sculptural Waterline stools (all shown above) to the brightly colored Chroma lamp (right), Roche sees a common thread running throughout. “What makes it Roche Bobois is that the furnishings are striking in terms of image, strong shapes and graphic lines but are also good to live with,” he says. “We like our products to be friendly, and we do things that are rather rounded so you want to put your hands on them.”

WHO: West Palm Beach native Carley Summers offers us a glimpse into a life well-lived via her colorful Instagram feed. Photographer by trade, artist at heart, her boho-chic snaps give an air of authenticity and delight the eye with candy-colored shades and curated keepsakes. WHAT: Feel interior envy while browsing through #thesummersabode, a hashtag Summers coined for shots of her home. Expect overdyed rugs, found jewelry, woven baskets, rattan furniture, tribal patterns and greenery—her home boasts nearly 100 tropical plants.

IN HER WORDS: “I have the need to create all the time and feel stagnant if I am not using my imagination. I love bringing color palettes together to give life to a shot.”

AUBERGE BEACH RESIDENCES & SPA

In 2017, Auberge Resorts Collection is bringing its signature livable luxury to Fort Lauderdale. The architects at Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates will construct two towers on 450 feet of oceanfront property, containing 171 residences and a world-class spa. In a departure from the ubiquitous glamour of South Beach, the location will epitomize a tranquil island retreat. Inside, the celebrated designers at Meyer Davis Studio will employ an honest, natural palette of materials to act as, in their words, “a celebration of the beauty of the beachfront.” Each unit will feature floor-to-ceiling windows with ocean views, a chef’s kitchen, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, and private elevator access, while a lucky few will boast private pools. aubergebeach.com

THE INSIDER MICHELE OKA DONER

Michele Oka Doner credits South Florida for giving her work a vocabulary. The visionary artist is from Miami—though her work is internationally renowned—and her portfolio covers a range of mediums from sculpture, furniture and objet to set design and public art, like her long-standing installation at the Miami International Airport. “My work evokes primal energy and a sense of timelessness,” muses the artist. With her exhibit going on now at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, “How I Caught a Swallow in Midair,” including pieces from the 1960s to today, Oka Doner shares what’s hot in her hometown. micheleokadoner.com

132 / LUXESOURCE.COM

What is intriguing you about the world of design in Miami at this moment? There is more interest in a sense of place. The buildings and landscapes are paying attention to native plants and materials. The art scene in Miami is vital and exciting, heavily influenced by its position as a hot spot between the traditional European-centric U.S. and Latin America.

Best neighborhood shopping: One of my favorites is True Loaf Bakery in Sunset Harbor; they have the best cookies. I also love Robert is Here in South Dade for its amazing local honeys, with flavors like orange blossom, key lime and avocado. Lastly, the Lincoln Road Antique & Collectible Market is a must-visit on Sundays for all things vintage.

Local artists to watch: I love the work and passionate commitment of sculptor Robert Chambers. His intensity and knowledge of his vernacular is outstanding. Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney also brings a Miami sensibility to the world of theater.

Most excited about now: I’m just off the high of The Miami City Ballet’s 30th Anniversary, of course! They reimagined George Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and I was commissioned to design the beautiful sets and costumes.

INSTACRUSH PHOTOS: HEADSHOT, CATHERINE COONS; VIGNETTES, CARLEY SUMMERS. BLUEPRINT RENDERING: COURTESY MEYER DAVIS STUDIO. THE INSIDER PHOTO: NICK MERRICK.

WHY: Whether it’s images from a recent trip to Morocco or styled vignettes in her light-filled kitchen, Summers has a keen eye for a shot that works, and you’re sure to come away with inspiration.

ARTEFACTO & JADER ALMEIDA

When Artefacto founder Paulo Bacchi came across Brazilian furniture designer and likeminded visionary Jader Almeida, he knew he had met his match. Almeida’s pieces, such as the Isa armchair above, with its curvy silhouette and modern lines, share in the brand’s ethos of simplicity in form. The pair teamed up to bring these pieces to Miami, in a firstever U.S. collaboration, setting up a “shop-in-shop” that now holds a permanent spot at Artefacto’s Biscayne Boulevard location. TALKING SHOP WITH GUIMAR URBINA

THE WALLPAPER COMPANY When did you open up shop? We expanded to our new and improved South Miami showroom located at 7003 N. Waterway Dr. in August 2015. Why did you choose Coral Terrace for your new location? It is an area that we had always targeted and kept an eye on due to its proximity to the highly desirable and designintelligent communities of Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Doral and other neighborhoods in South/ West Miami. We felt that these markets were being severely undeserved, as there is a considerable lack of specialty wallpaper showrooms operating in the greater area. Describe your design and vision for the space. We wanted to create a place in which our customers would feel empowered about their wallpaper decisions and be inspired by all of the offerings on display. What products do you have on the floor? All types of wallcoverings—wallpaper, vinyl, textile, mica, grass cloth and so much more. We carry brands like Donghia, Osborne & Little and Farrow & Ball, to name just a few. wallpapercompanyshop.com

DATE BOOK MICHAEL SAIGER: MIANSAI

South Florida is where Michael Saiger began his foray into men’s jewelry design, happening upon the craft and eventually founding the utilitarian menswear brand Miansai. His initial design, an empty bullet casing strung on a leather cord, was quickly picked up by area clothing boutiques and the rest is history. Although Miansai does not have a storefront in Miami, at their headquarters near the Design District, you can find upwards of 40 artisans crafting these hyper-masculine adornments. The company’s aesthetic matches that of its product: handmade and raw. Each outpost contains a tea bar, perfect for its healthconscious founder who skips coffee in favor of teas and kombucha. This on-the-go entrepreneur spends his time in Miami enjoying the area’s weather and outdoorsy ethos. We tracked down Saiger to share his favorite local stops. miansai.com 2 p.m. There are two galleries that I would check out in Little Haiti: the Yeelen, a modern museum giving a voice to the area’s international ethos, and the super-contemporary and fantastic Gallery Diet.

8 a.m. I’m a big runner; it’s my habitual form of exertion. Miami is a great place to get up and go for a run because you are surrounded by scenic views and ocean breezes. I wake up and run on the Venetian Islands, where I live, with my dog Scola.

the Pérez Art Museum Miami, where you can go to get your contemporary art fix and awe at the architecture of the museum itself. The glass-and-concrete structure is inherently modern and covered with indigenous tropical plants.

9:30 a.m. I always stop at Ten Fruits in downtown Miami to grab an acai bowl or Dr Smood for some clean eating. If I have a bit more time, I’ll hit Sabor a Peru; make sure to get one of its killer ceviches!

1 p.m. Get food on the go from our office go-to, La Sandwicherie, a 24-hour South Beach staple. I always get a turkey sandwich with extra vinaigrette, the restaurant’s coveted dressing that accompanies its offerings.

4 p.m. Start your route to happy hour by way of Biscayne Boulevard. It’s one of my favorite areas in Miami. There is a strip of amazing motels and buildings (from the 1950s) that recall the era’s architecture with a modern, relevant update. The Vagabond Hotel is a prime example of this.

1:30 p.m. Go ahead and take a venture into one of Miami’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods, Little Haiti. Here, the streets are characterized by brightly colored building façades and absolutely incredible street art.

5 p.m. Finally, it’s time to kick back with some of Miami’s see and be seen at The Standard hotel. Nothing compares to the view of the sunset over the bay, except maybe the accompanying cocktail!

10:30 a.m. Time to soak in some of Miami’s burgeoning art scene. I’ll start at Spinello Projects. Something I love most about Miami is its entrepreneurial spirit, and Spinello supports up-andcoming artists with unorthodox portfolios. Another must-see is 136 / LUXESOURCE.COM

IN THE GRASS THE ROMANONES, 1976

The summer solstice is upon us, a time of year so effortlessly captured by the masterful eye of photographer Slim Aarons. His iconic lens conjures the season’s most glorious outdoor pastimes—such as afternoon tea during the golden hour and toes grazing the cool grass, as pictured in the Spanish garden shown—and have incited the following fresh selections. Monaco’s storied beaches have long attracted the überchic, and for good reason: Nothing says summer like a lackadaisical lunch enjoyed seaside. Here, we channel the Côte d’Azur’s glistening waters and sandy coastlines, which call to mind accents and accessories that are as sophisticated as they are breezy.

to ROOM WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE FLORAL TEAM OF PUTNAM & PUTNAM, THE SEASON’S LATEST ACCENT TABLES ARE COMING UP ROSES. WRITTEN BY CARA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOANNA MCCLURE FLORAL ART BY PUTNAM & PUTNAM

JESSIE RANDALL

FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGNER LOEFFLERRANDALL.COM

Like just about every other girl who works in fashion… I am obsessed with Putnam & Putnam. I love their work and the carefree, wild and beautiful compositions they create. These yellow flowers make me so happy and really highlight the beauty of Samuel Amoia’s tables. The muted, matte hues… And geometric shapes of the tables mixed with the straight lines really appeal to me—I love straight lines. These tables feel like sculpture. They remind me of a modern take on wainscoting, geometry and jewelry, and, for me, the color palette evokes the beach. I love the composition and the tension between opposite materials: In my work, I am drawn to exploring the contrast of masculine and feminine. I’m also married to my opposite! The tables feel... Matte, solid, geometric, bleached, modern. The composition is... Wild, contrasting, beautiful, happy.

INTO THE WILD

THE PIECE: Geometric Drum Tables THE DESIGNER: Samuel Amoia FIND IT: itzanahome.com THE INSPIRATION: Contrast is everything when it comes to design, and here, the collision of French Deco influences employed by Belizean artisanal techniques have resulted in a subtle impact of beauty and strength.

BURGEONING IDEAS THE PIECE: Hunter + White Rock Salt and Burgundy + Red Rock THE DESIGNER: Fernando Mastrangelo FIND IT: m-material.com THE INSPIRATION: Function and beauty have long been the objects of desire for product designers and both are elements well within the possession of Fernando Mastrangelo’s sculptural tables that explore the shared language between materiality and shape.

SOPHIE HULME HANDBAG DESIGNER SOPHIEHULME.COM

I love Fernando Mastrangelo’s obvious focus on materials: I think when using beautiful materials it is important to let them shine and be the focus—that’s what makes these pieces so successful. The flower pairings… Do a marvelous job of both complementing and contrasting the two tables in the different colorways, and they really help to underscore the use of materials. Putnam & Putnam has an impressive aesthetic. Contrasting materials help to accentuate the beauty of the opposing items: The simplistic form combined with the beautiful color palette is design magic for the eye. In my work, we contrast shiny hardware with matte leathers, which I believe leads to beautiful results. I have an area in my house… With loads of plants and palms, and these pieces would look perfect there with greenery on them to soften the lines. The geometry of the tables… Are reminiscent of Bauhaus Bauspiel building blocks. Tables + Composition: Solid, honest, crisp, dense, structured.

EN PLEIN AIR THE PIECE: Faux Bois Twisted Juniper Side Table THE DESIGNER: George Sellers FIND IT: aretecollection.com THE INSPIRATION: Roots forged of plaster of Paris climb towards a modern angular tabletop, creating a side table with museum-worthy appeal.

LOIC LE GAILLARD AND JULIEN LOMBRAIL

GALLERY OWNERS CARPENTERSWORKSHOPGALLERY.COM

Meticulously crafted and almost a work of art itself… This table clearly draws inspiration from mythological symbolism. The contrast of the smooth tabletop and sinewy, organic form of the base is dramatic. When using flowers and plants to convey a design story... The result is often a visceral, sculptural moment. The floral installation’s organic air… Contrasts with the structural and somewhat rigid nature of the side table. The contrast is palpable, making for a very interesting conversation about materiality. This table is congruently a form of artistic expression and practical substance… A spirit embodied by the artists and designers at Carpenters Workshop Gallery. We appreciate Areté’s efforts to combine time-tested artisanal craftsmanship with cuttingedge design, something else that we also adhere to. Table + Composition: Balanced, textured, contextual, organic, adaptable.

BLOOM TOWN THE PIECE: Ilary Monolithic Table THE DESIGNER: Jean-Marie Massaud FIND IT: poltronafrau.com THE INSPIRATION: Poltrona Frau is known for minimal lines and sleek furnishings, and following suit is the Ilary Monolithic table— composed of stately Grigio Roma marble left in a semi-gloss varnish.

MONICA KHEMSUROV AND JILL SINGER

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS SIGHTUNSEEN.COM

This piece by Poltrona Frau is definitely in our wheelhouse: We love the artistic point of view. We are drawn to this table because of its appealingly sculptural shape… As well as its intriguing sense of balance and its monolithic composition. We’re all for risks—we hate boring: The risk here is in the weight, but also the shape. It’s not conventional, and it tips back at the top, playing with balance in a really artistic way. The side table and the floral art seem to share a similar DNA: The table is a classic material rendered in an unexpected shape; the floral art takes roses, a perennial classic, and gives them a fresher, more modern spin by virtue of a lessstructured, more freeform arrangement. Nature and flowers infuse a softer, organic element… Into a space, which often serves as a lovely contrast to the more rigid lines of furniture or art. Contrast is critical for a good interior: When everything looks the same, you have a catalog, not a home. We could never live like that. The human eye instinctively craves contrast in both art and design, no question; it’s innate. Table + Composition: Sculptural, delicate, balanced, elegant, neoclassical.

RACHEL BENTLEY AND CARLY NANCE

ONLINE DESIGN PURVEYORS THE-CITIZENRY.COM

The pieces Holly Hunt chooses to represent always push the boundaries‌ In terms of structure and material, yet they do a great job of practicing restraint and keeping their designs clean and simple. Nature inspires art: This unfettered arrangement complements the organic design of the table, and the two immediately take us on a ride through the English countryside. There is a softness and a romance to this arrangement: I love the fresh yellows and whites, and how these hues add a rich contrast to the organic wood table. This piece allows the material to take center stage: It keeps the integrity of the grain, the coloring, even the actual shape of the walnut wood. And it does so in a refined, sophisticated manner. Whenever you combine two unexpected design details‌ You add some intrigue, some mystery. Table + Composition: Romantic meets rustic, natural, structured yet untamed.

FLORA FLAUNT THE PIECE: Twig Branch Table THE DESIGNER: George Massar for Gregorius Pineo FIND IT: gregoriuspineo.com; hollyhunt.com THE INSPIRATION: As if rooted to the ground in which its placed, the Twig Branch table is lively and playfully complex, assembled of composite stone to make it agreeable both inside and out.

GROWTH SPURT THE PIECE: Domicile G Stool THE DESIGNER: Michael Vanderbyl FIND IT: bolierco.com THE INSPIRATION: Eliciting notes of midcentury modern design with an inflection on African folk art, the Domicile G stool is a mellifluous blend of contemporary and traditional cultures.

ANNA BOND

ARTIST AND PRODUCT DESIGNER RIFLEPAPERCO.COM

I love a unique accent table that is both beautiful and functional… And Bolier creates quality pieces that are refined and distinctive. I also absolutely adore Putnam & Putnam… And the florals here look incredible. The juxtaposition of the delicate flowers seemingly growing alongside such a strong piece of furniture is so extraordinary. The best results come from combining opposites or creating unexpected pairings: I am always doing this in my own work and in my home. For example, I love pairing minimal, modern designs with ornate Middle Eastern antiques. The Domicile stool makes a strong statement, proving to be both timeless and minimal: That’s always the combination that I am looking for as a creative. Perfect symmetry: There is something both worldly and familiar about the balance of this table. It reminds me of something that would have been in my grandmother’s home… Which was a huge influence on me. It was refined, midcentury and filled with antiques from her travels around the world. The table feels... Natural, polished, wooden, symmetrical, curved. The composition is... Strong, sophisticated, modern, inspired, classic.

THE HOME’S MOST HISTORICALLY PRIVATE ROOMS LET DOWN THEIR GUARD—AND THEIR WALLS—AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT. WRITTEN BY BRIELLE M. FERREIRA

182 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Much has been said about the kitchen and bathroom’s slow and elegant rise from cramped, confined spaces hidden away from the rest of the home to masters of their domain—stunning jewel boxes that have become fast favorites for long-time inhabitants and guests alike. So, perhaps, it’s a natural progression that these handsome rooms have gone a step further in their evolution: knocking down not only their walls to the rest of the home— thanks to open living and fluid en suite floor plans—but also to the great outdoors. The results are spaces that have relied on exciting entries into the marketplace, such as new super-durable countertop and cabinet materials meant to withstand excessive sunlight and wear, and pocketing doors and windows that make preexisting boundaries all but melt away, to completely redefine tradition. Here, Luxe takes a look at kitchens and baths that work hard and play harder (SPF required).

PHOTOS: LISA COHEN.

The architectural team at Robson Rak designed this Australian kitchen with nature in mind thanks to folding glass doors that open to a beautifully manicured outdoor patio and lots of warm wooden accents throughout.

THE LOOK / KITCHEN + BATH

GLASS ACT When designers Maria von Hartz and Annie Fitzgerald of Los Angeles-based Von Fitz Design tackled this kitchen for a family with a love of entertaining, they knew it would be a mistake to not capitalize on the sunny Southern California climate. So, they created a stunning automated window in the kitchen that can be controlled via remote and is designed to disappear during casual family lunches or cocktail parties, creating a stunning area of interest both inside and out. vonfitzdesign.com

Just when it feels like renowned architect David Rockwell is doing it all—think signature hotels, single-family homes, set design for Broadway giants like Hairspray and Kinky Boots, and even JetBlue’s impressive terminal at JFK International Airport—he announces a new project. And, in the case of his recent collaboration with the cooking maestros at Caliber Appliances, the Rockwell by Caliber Grill, he proves his innovation cannot be limited by genre. The grill, designed to encourage socialization, features a drop-down lid for 360-degree interaction and red-hot good looks to boot. caliberappliances.com

WONDER WALLS

There are only two options when designing a new addition to a centuries-old home: stick with and respect the structure’s original architecture and choose materials that are consistent within its historical context or break the rules in a complete departure. In the case of the majorly modern remix of an 18 th-century British cottage shown here, it’s evident designer Alex Saint of Kitchen Architecture went with the latter. Saint built a clean, contemporary kitchen sporting Bulthaup cabinets in a steel-framed glass box with doors that slide open onto a quaint cobblestone patio perfect for enjoying a spot of tea. kitchenarchitecture.co.uk 184 / LUXESOURCE.COM

Design is both transformative and transporting; so, when it comes to establishing a daily routine, it doesn’t hurt to start each morning with a little inspiration from the tropical paradise of the Maldives. And this pretty bathroom scene from Dusit Thani’s Mudhdhoo Island resort makes it easy to see why: Open to a private courtyard, the serene escape invites the elements in while chasing stress out. Steal soothing details, like the smooth-to-the-touch freestanding tub, limestone flooring that mimics the look of packed sand, and a simple but striking outdoor shower, and feel like you’re on vacation while from the comfort of your own home. dusit.com

NATURAL

Driftwood-hued flooring and lots of glass and natural light make this beautiful Malibu bathroom by designer Vanessa Alexander feel like a grown-up (and super-luxurious) tree house. In this space, it’s more about what isn’t there than about what is; everything is stripped down to its bare essentials. There are no walls separating the bath area from the master bedroom, and white walls, a white tub and a white vanity allow the texture of the wood and different finishes to speak and keep the attention on what really matters: the bold, blue water views throughout. alexanderdb.com

SWIM FAN An outdoor shower sans privacy walls that then gets perched on the side of a cliff with expansive views isn’t for the shy or timid; but, luckily, neither is the CB406 fitted shower column from MGS. The faucet’s sleek and sexy lines were drawn for impact, and it delivers just that, thanks to its textural, knurled details, slightly slanted handles and an elegantly curved spout—available in both brushed or polished stainless-steel finishes. mgstaps.com

No dinner party is complete without pretty table linens. Fine textiles can transform a table from casual to formal and back again, adding an element of the tailored and well-planned to even the most impromptu gathering. INSPIRED DESIGN

Taking its design cues from the gentle, fluid motion of water, WetStyle’s Image-In collection Water tub features a graceful motif drawn in a matte application over the True High Gloss finish of the tub, which has been deliberately crafted from the company’s signature Wetmar Bio thermo-insulating material. The subtle design, illustrated by art director Jean Lacroix, helps the tub to act like a subtle piece of art in the bathroom and keeps thoughts of nature close to heart. wetstyle.ca

THE DESIGN TEAM: Interior Design / Dufner Heighes Inc. Home Builder / Sarkela Corporation Landscape Architecture / Big Orange Landscaping THE CHALLENGE: Renovate a Spanish Colonial vacation home in Fort Lauderdale for a couple with four children. Designers Daniel Heighes Wismer and Greg Dufner knew exactly what they were in for. “We’d worked with these same clients on eight or nine homes over the past 15 years, in California, Northern Michigan, Chicago and New York,” recalls Wismer. “This is their Florida incarnation.” THE WORK: Situated on a tranquil peninsula along the Intracoastal Waterway, the house was already blessed with striking water views on three sides and established landscaping. Wismer and Dufner slightly modified the exterior, including removing extraneous ornamentation. Along with Big Orange Landscaping, the duo tweaked the existing landscape, keeping it as minimal and natural as possible. “We cleared out the excess foliage and amplified the volume of the healthiest, most vibrant plants,” Dufner says. They also refreshed the courtyard with more uniform stonework and decorative tiles. THE RESULT: Overall, the home reflects the owners’ waterside lifestyle as well as the purity of their taste. “It’s contemporary, and with a great connection to the water,” says Wismer. “It really is a family affair.” 194 / LUXESOURCE.COM

THE CHALLENGE: Captivated by a lush sprawling lot in South Miami that was dotted with towering old-growth oak trees and an original home that no longer stood, a couple with three daughters set out to build their own sanctuary. “This property has the most incredible trees and foliage, so a priority was having the largest windows possible,” says designer Charlotte Dunagan. “They wanted something that was welcoming, fresh and accessible.” THE WORK: Enter architect David Wearne Johnson, who specializes in designing modern homes in the Old Florida style, with prominent front porches and wraparound verandas. He drew up plans for an expansive home that would artfully tuck into the oak trees.

To ensure the foliage would be safe as construction began, landscape architect Michael Sapusek helped site the building. He created a trellised pergola and sitting area by the main swimming pool and spa, and meandering paths on the property, so the kids can tool around on their bicycles. To further enhance the backyard’s tropical feel, Sapusek added plenty of greenery, including date and coconut palms. THE RESULT: The site’s existing landscape was supplemented with citrus trees, palms and flowering vines, and the design team experimented with several exterior paint colors to achieve the perfect shade. “There’s no fluff to this home,” notes Dunagan. “It has a very sophisticated and understated elegance.”

198 / LUXESOURCE.COM

THE ASSIGNMENT: A couple looking to downsize from their former 15,000-squarefoot mansion on Biscayne Bay’s Star Island were drawn to a patch of land in Miami Beach because of its infinitely charming 1930s coach house, which had been designed by Russell Thorn Pancoast, one of the city’s founding architects. They hired architect and builder Zeb Jarosz to erect a humbler structure that would, nevertheless, retain a certain level of sophistication. THE WORK: The arched pool house was built first and set the tone for the Mediterranean Revival structure of the main residence. Inspiration and decisions

flowed naturally from the coach house, which determined materials: stucco, keystone (local coral stone) and pecky cypress. The outdoor area features painted frescoes by Miami-based artist Ruben Marangone, along with Star and Dolphin seating crafted from hand-welded cast aluminum gathered around a shellstone table. Creeping vines and shell motifs abound. THE RESULT: “Ornament is simplified and expressed in the Florida vernacular,” says Jarosz. “The minimal monochromatic setting, whose spaces telegraph a kind of monastic hush, are more quiet, more 21st century.”

Today’s outdoor kitchens have come a long way from their modest iron-grill-over-an-opencharcoal-flame beginnings. Companies like Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet are committed to creating full al fresco kitchen appliance packages that mirror their interior rivals— offering everything from outdoor grills and pizza ovens to smoker cabinets and beverage centers. The result? Spaces as gorgeous and well-thought-out as this party-ready Coral Gables, Florida, outpost featuring the brand’s Hybrid Fire built-in grill, wall-mounted ventilation hood and double cooktop cabinet with power wok burner, among many others. kalamazoogourmet.com

When San Francisco landscape architect Brian Koch of Terra Ferma Landscapes first stepped onto a heavily wooded property in the heart of Silicon Valley, he saw past the disjointed skeleton of the existing landscape to the verdant oasis it could become. Before he could begin developing the plant palette, however, he had to lay his groundwork: transforming the outdoor spaces into a series of open rooms, which would move easily from one to the next with the help of meticulously planned hardscaping. “We chose Pennsylvania bluestone for the hardscaping for its variations in color and tones, as well as its versatility,” says Koch. “We used it to build solid benches, pool coping, barbeque slabs, single-slab stair treads and the signature step pads throughout the garden and property.” tflandscapes.com

The traditional architecture of this bucolic estate in California’s Pacific Palisades called for the same sense of classicism to be carried through to its outdoor spaces, a challenge that designer Tim Campbell took in stride. Outfitting the stately patio with plenty of delicately potted plants and Shaker-style furnishings lends the space a decidedly timeless feel, while creating distinct areas for dining and relaxation ensures it’s the ideal escape any time of day. studiotimcampbell.com

For renowned San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, there’s no one who better understands the relationship between interiors and exteriors than the legendary Michael Taylor Designs. So, when the company’s owner, Lee Pierce, reached out about a collaboration, she was sold. Here, Tucker talks legacy, lifestyle and her love of the great outdoors. suzannetuckerhome.com; michaeltaylordesigns.com

Why branch into outdoor furniture? I have always taken a holistic approach to the design of indoor and outdoor spaces: They are inextricably linked and should flow naturally. Outdoor furniture has become as important as what you find inside and far more versatile and stylish than before, so I set out to design a collection that is not only of outstanding quality in materials, craftsmanship and comfort, but also with an aesthetic suitable for a wide variety of design styles. What was your vision for the collection? I was inspired by the Santa Barbara lifestyle, which is casual yet chic. “La dolce vita” is a way of life in Santa Barbara that pervades every aspect of this wonderful place: from the iconic architecture and lush gardens to the seductive scents in the air and the rather magical quality of light. Share why you opted for teak and wicker. Teak is a natural choice for outdoor furniture because of its durability. Its high oil content serves as Mother Nature’s weatherproofing, ensuring your pieces will last year after year. When combined with a handwoven, easy-care resin wicker, I’m able to emphasize the indoor/outdoor look of the line.

To expand the home’s usable footprint, architects are focusing their energies outdoors more and more—turning patios into veritable outside living rooms with interesting structural components that make them every bit as impressive as their interior counterparts. In the case of this Berkeley Hills, California, home by architect Charles Debbas, a canopy made of steel I-beams and rice husk resin-fiber planks sets the tone for a coveted patio. “My initial vision for the garden was for it to act as an outdoor ‘home away from home,’ ” says Debbas. “At night, the enclosed feel of the space allows the linear fireplace to reflect its glow on the flooring below, providing a very intimate setting in an otherwise expansive garden.” debbasarchitecture.com

While the materials experts at Eldorado Stone have long been celebrated for their beautiful natural and manufactured architectural veneers, the company’s commitment to creating memorable spaces doesn’t end with façades or fireplace surrounds. One of their more recent entries, a collection of handcrafted fire bowls—like the Infinite Artisan fire bowl shown here—speaks to stone’s versatility, as the material does more than bring texture in construction applications; it brings texture to life, creating compulsively communal gathering spots especially tailored for s’mores lovers. eldoradostone.com

T

he duality of Japanese culture is expressed in the contrast between a person’s honne, defined as one’s often-concealed true desires, and tatemae, one’s outward presentation in accordance with the expectations of society. This dichotomy fascinates designer Juan Poggi. “I’m very intrigued by that part of the world,” he says. “I travel there every year.” So when it came to designing his own Coral Gables home, he wanted to capture something of both his honne and tatemae. When Poggi’s friend, residential designer Robert E. Strell (based in Albuquerque by way of Miami Beach) first visited the home, a 1953 classic Florida bungalow, Strell instinctively knew Poggi would not be comfortable in its original two-bedroom, one-bath incarnation. “Space and light and openness are very important to Juan,” says Strell. “And the kind of minimalism he likes could not be done in that house.” So Strell persuaded Poggi to construct an addition that would modernize the home, creating a U-shaped structure that encloses an entry courtyard. The home as a whole also took on a complete remodel to maximize the site and the features inherent in the original design, with ample opportunity to make the property a true reflection of Poggi’s aesthetic and sensibility. Architect Ramon Pacheco helped Poggi slightly tweak the design, and Pacheco’s associate, Julio Estorino, supervised the project. Construction, however, uncovered a host of ills. “There was nothing to save in that house,” remembers Marcelo Cattarossi, who runs his own project management firm, Assertive Consulting, but at the time oversaw construction with builder Emilio C. Cuzan. “The windows had been attached to empty concrete blocks,” rather than properly framed. Almost everything had to be torn down, though Strell says they were able to retain much of the roof.

The stucco-and-stone result, says Strell, “pushes and pulls simple elements to move the house from a defined formula.” An overhang shading the entry, for example, recalls Miami Deco details, making it true to its location, but it is designed with a more pared-down “understated exuberance,” he notes. Inside, Poggi indeed went minimalist but with plenty of moments that add warmth and character. “I wanted to find the silence in my design,” he says. “I wanted it to be very minimal, with the right pieces in the right places.” To this end, the entry hall contains only an enormous photo installation of Kyoto by Peruvian photographer Nelly Garcia on one wall and a simple console against a gold-leafed second wall. This opens onto a transitional space with a curved red-oak wall that Poggi designed as an homage to one of his favorite sculptors, Richard Serra. Three stone-like forms create a sculptural composition of Zen-like simplicity that could be said to evoke Poggi’s decorous tatemae. But the 226 / LUXESOURCE.COM

wall also opens at one end to reveal a wet bar that services his frequent parties. “He told me he wanted space to dance,” recalls Strell of what could be considered part of Poggi’s honne, save for the fact that he doesn’t hide this desire. What follows is an airy open-plan living space whose underlying harmony is largely due to a consistent palette of materials: French white-oak floors tinted with the barest hint of mocha, a gray Spanish limestone called Arival that also partially wraps the exterior of the house, white walls with accent walls of red oak. Poggi’s respect for natural materials, as well as the way their deployment inside and outside creates a cohesive indoor-outdoor relationship, is very much a Japanese concept. “In Japan, they respect materials,” he says, “and everything has to do with the other, which makes design there very harmonious.” But Poggi had to improvise when he wanted to apply another Japanese technique: the use of cedar as an interior material. “I couldn’t get large enough pieces of cedar, and

The addition, to the right, is ringed with a cantilevered overhang that shades the new entry. Stucco and gray Arival limestone from Piedras International clads the façade, which was opened up with extensive glass. Landscape designer Mercedes Porcari designed the courtyard, using tall papyrus along the left wall, monstera below the sliding doors and sansevieria lining the addition.

The stone-like ceramic pieces in this transitional space are by Atelier Vierkant, from Luminaire; they are embraced by a cerusedred-oak wall, fabricated by bon, balance order nature—the far end encloses a wet bar. Beyond, below a photo by Hiroshi Sugimoto of Marmara Sea, is a prototype of the Libra table by Eduardo Martinez of Marbello Design in West Hollywood, California.

Custom cabinetry in the kitchen is by Downsview Kitchens; the island countertop, from Opustone Natural Stone Distributors, is black granite with a leather finish, installed by IMG Stonecrafter. Barstools by Shin and Tomoko Azumi from Design Within Reach offer seating for guests, while a Flos Taccia lamp from Luminaire provides an added theatrical punch. The sink and faucet are by Waterworks, and Viking appliances are from La Cuisine Appliances.

I wasn’t sure I could live with that scent,” he says. So for the kitchen, Poggi used walnut stained to resemble the Japanese material. “I wanted the kitchen to feel like a bar,” says the inveterate host, whose collected Japanese ceramics are displayed on open shelving. “Everything happens around the kitchen, and it’s elegant enough to have people gather there.” To ensure that this elegance was not marred by the exhaust over the kitchen island, Poggi created an Eastern-inspired white-oak grid that partially hides it, as well as overhead lighting. And in a response to the low ceilings, he adds, “No light protrudes down; they’re all recessed.” Furnishings are rigorously edited yet comfortable. Iconic midcentury pieces—Wegner Wishbone chairs, Achille and Pier Castiglioni’s Taccia lamp, an Eames lounge chair—mix with more modern classics such as Bernhard Dessecker’s Knüller floor lamp for Ingo Maurer and Grande Papilio chairs by Naoto Fukasawa for B&B Italia. Custom rugs delineate specific areas, but really, everything has an easy flow. Even the master bedroom’s bath is open to the bedroom, though it can be closed off by Poggi’s modern interpretation of shoji screens that replace rice paper with 3M linen-look panels. And storage is everywhere—“very Japanese because of the lack of space there,” says Poggi—though its design is so subtle that all one notices is the lack of clutter. Outside, Poggi wanted to bring in plants he remembered from his childhood. “So we planted papyrus, monstera and sansevieria in the courtyard, as well as created a small pond, that reflects the Japanese sensibility,” says landscape designer Mercedes Porcari. Two rows of ligustrum trees in the back offer a place for a future sculpture. Now that the right pieces are in the right places, the residence exudes that quiet sense of balance Poggi envisioned. There’s balance between dark and light, indoor and outdoor, natural and manmade materials, and, of course, honne and tatemae. LUXESOURCE.COM / 233

FUELED BY A PASSION FOR INNOVATION, CREATIVE MAESTRO OSCAR GLOTTMAN IS CONQUERING ALL ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN WORLD. WRITTEN BY TARYN BICKLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY SONYA REVELL

“I’M EXCITED BY NEW MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES. INNOVATIONS IN THE PROCESSES OF DESIGN ARE GREAT MOTIVATIONAL DRIVERS.”

A

s a child in Colombia, Oscar Glottman feverishly constructed things out of whatever he could find, fueling his passion with blocks, twigs, branches, glue and twine. “I built skyscrapers and designed every detail from the furniture to the landscape surrounding these structures,” he remembers fondly. And today, he’s turned that interest into a full-fledged multidisciplinary design studio. From architecture to interiors, lighting, and a showroom and retail space in Wynwood—and lately, even visual arts—the designer’s creative reach is ever-expanding. Glottman moved to Miami at an early age, and went on to study architecture at the University of Miami and then internationally, in England and Italy, before opening his design firm, Glottman. “The goal was to gain expertise in designing architecture with a deep and true understanding of its humanity,” he says, and his travels helped him in this quest. Humanizing architecture, Glottman’s philosophy touts the tiniest details first, and the bigger picture later. “From small to big, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, we are in tune with the human needs of our clients,” he says. This, he believes, helps create an integrity and culture that’s present from inception and points to a clear mission. Delivering an ethos of environmental expression, Glottman focuses on a mix of intuition, technology and on-trend products

Oscar Glottman can be seen peering through micro LED directional downlights in front of photographs from his own Time Zippers/Reflection Pools series (opposite, right); some of his lighting plans are shown right. to enliven the spaces and lives of his clients. “I’m excited by new materials and technologies: 3-D printing, laser cutting, digital hardware, and equipment including computerized textile looms, injection molding and spin-casting machines— these have wholly infiltrated the design industry,” he says. “Innovations in the processes of design are great motivational drivers. Virtual-reality software and 3-D design tools power our new dreams for reality. The designer is no longer tied to production based on a module system. Oneof-a-kind and bespoke have become free-use agents. We are liberated from the grid.” Whether planning interiors for residences in South Florida, out of state or the Caribbean, designing lighting and door systems for his projects or other designers and architects, or featuring cutting-edge lines in his showroom like the multifaceted designs of Kinnasand or a new collection of Moooi rugs that are customprinted in a super-high resolution, Glottman is happy responding to the needs of his clients before even they can realize them. “It’s about creating living environments that are extensions of each inhabitant,” says the designer, whose next project is a larger retail space that includes music, fashion and food, as well as a pop-up shop in the MiMo/Biscayne Boulevard Historic District. “It’s symbiosis. It’s weaving the threads together to create a holistic, comprehensive living system where everything is connected by a common language.” LUXESOURCE.COM / 241

arolyn and Barry Baumel once thought they would live in their dream house on Miami Beach’s Sunset Island for the rest of their lives. But when their children moved out, the couple decided to chart a new course with a condo instead. When they came across an ocean-side penthouse with its own floor and an accompanying rooftop pool offering views of the downtown Miami skyline, it was an easy sell. “It doesn’t feel like you’re in an apartment,” Carolyn says of her new home. “It’s a house in the sky.” The couple may have left Sunset Island, but Carolyn insisted that their friends, designers Robert Brown and Todd Davis, come along to reimagine the interiors of their new home. The building had been completed in 1990, and the owners and designers set out to gut, reconfigure and update the space to a more current contemporary style, with interiors that nod to the glamorous comfort and approachability of the 1970s. But Carolyn also wanted a few key possessions to remain, such as the couple’s two

heirloom rugs, their gilded-framed art collection, a Steinway piano and a pair of Baccarat crystal chandeliers. So the home indeed underwent a complete renovation and became a sleek white envelope for a blend of traditional and ’70s-influenced furniture and objects. “We know sometimes the soulfulness of a few vintage pieces can bring further drama through juxtaposition,” Brown explains. “And what’s great about the Baumels is their willingness to explore: a new lifestyle, new materials and a new aesthetic.” To bring the apartment up to date, Brown and Davis implemented state-of-the-art features per the clients’ specifications and designed clean, contemporary architecture to further support their goals, with Juan C. David of JCD Architect serving as architect of record. A highlight of the residence is its white glass-tile floors, which give the home a lustrous, almost space-age feel. The flooring material has existed for years, but advancing technologies have reinvigorated it. “Before, it would either warp or scratch easily, or the color consistency wasn’t

The condo blends traditional and contemporary styles with 1970s inspiration, seen in custom crushedvelvet-covered chairs by designers Robert Brown and Todd Davis and a vintage drinks table from Vermillion, all resting on the owners’ antique rug. Art by Sylvie Fleury lends a psychedelic note; it was acquired through Salon 94 in New York.

Entering the penthouse via elevator, one is greeted by another Sputnik chandelier, a six-pane mirror by French artist Hubert le Gall, purchased through Jean de Merry in Los Angeles, and another Lucite console from Jalan Jalan Collection. The stool wears Romo fabric on its seat.

The design in the dining area began with the owners’ pair of Baccarat chandeliers, which the wife, Carolyn Baumel, suggested be hung at different heights. They suspend over a custom bird’s-eye maple dining table with brass inlay and custom chairs in a plummy Pierre Frey velvet, all by Brown Davis Interiors for Keith Fritz. The kaleidoscopic art is from the owners’ collection.

quite there,” explains builder Jim Schlobohm, who helmed construction with the help of project manager Calvert “Zibo” Ventura. “You didn’t have the pure white running as perfectly as it is now. This is the third generation of that material, so I think they figured it out.” To break up the monotony of one long hallway, which became a kind of gallery for some of the pieces in the Baumels’ art collection, Brown and Davis also added sections of black marble flooring, as well as a series of classical pilasters “for compression and expansion,” Brown says. In the spacious kitchen, where Carolyn, an enthusiastic cook, often holds court during dinner parties, a thick white marble-topped island pairs with walnut cabinetry to add warmth; that walnut reappears in the nearby living room’s wet bar. Brown and Davis designed the bird’s-eye maple dining table with brass-inlaid trim, one of numerous touches of brass and bronze, such as the legs of the stools at the wet bar and an end table in the office; the designers mixed these metals, along with stainless steel, throughout to achieve depth and balance. “Knowing we would have a lot of clean, contemporary architecture, there’s nothing like the beauty and warmth of those pops of brass and bronze,” says Davis. Those finishes also speak to the vintage 1970s style permeating the condo. “When you go to some of the best shops in New York or the world, the collectors are collecting ’70s pieces now,” Brown says.

Friends and family often gather in the kitchen while Carolyn cooks using appliances from Impel America Appliances. A vintage Murano chandelier hangs over the island, with its countertop from Opustone fabricated by Modern Stones and a walnut base that ties back to the main cabinetry by Alno. The barstools are by Lisa Taylor Designs.

“It’s a trend that’s underway, and here it was a chance for us to do something loungy and sexy but also approachable and comfortable.” A leading example is a crushed-velvet sofa in the living area—a take on another sofa Carolyn showed Brown and Davis that reminded her of clustered marshmallows; it’s also one of numerous pieces from Brown and Davis’ new custom furniture line. The owners decided to reduce the number of bedrooms in order to make each one more spacious. “I had a clear vision of this place: to just take every single wall out that I could,” Carolyn says. The five-bedroom, 6 ½-bathroom penthouse was reduced by one bedroom and one bathroom. “I don’t think a woman designed this building,” Carolyn adds with a laugh. “It had all these bedrooms and bathrooms and not one linen closet.” Now the master bedroom, in particular—which boasts a warmer palette of brown, eggplant, sea green and cream—has become an oasis where the couple can linger and enjoy the ocean view from bed or from a nearby chaise. Here, purple wood chests of custom-colored Macassar ebony stand out as additional gems from the designers’ custom collection. Thanks to a fully automated system, any shade can be drawn or the temperature adjusted or even cupboards opened with the touch of a button. But the most tempting adjustment may be to move outside, onto an outdoor terrace wrapping the entire penthouse, or to the private beach downstairs or the residence’s private pool above. “It’s a special place,” Carolyn says. “We created something that feels like a home, but there’s nothing like this. It’s like being in a Zen garden on top of the world.”

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK VETERAN ART BUFF FRANKLIN SIRMANS BRINGS HIS EXPERTISE TO MIAMI, EXCITED TO JOIN THE CONVERSATION AND ALREADY ENRICHING THE LOCAL ART SCENE. WRITTEN BY MELISSA JACOBS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARY JAMES

LUXESOURCE.COM / 259

I

“MUSEUMS ARE, AT THEIR BEST, CATALYSTS FOR CIVIL, HUMANITARIAN AND THOUGHTFUL CONVERSATIONS.”

260 / LUXESOURCE.COM

t’s a good thing Franklin Sirmans is an athlete. Since taking the helm of Pérez Art Museum Miami last fall, he hasn’t stopped running from the museum to the nearby AmericanAirlines Arena and down the street to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of MiamiDade County, immersing himself in the civic life befitting the premier facility. “That’s the fun thing, having so much going on at once,” he says. “The same day I arrived we had just opened an exhibit showcasing the work of Firelei Báez. There’s no routine because every day is different.” While moving boxes may be the office décor of late, within a short few months, Sirmans, a former collegiate tennis player, has already presided over his first gala, held record-breaking receptions for African American art, and seen the inauguration of Inside Out, a program funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that brings high-quality reproductions of art from PAMM’s permanent collection into the community. Sirmans’ artistic bona fides shout superstar status in the contemporary art world. He comes to PAMM from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where he served as department head and curator of contemporary art. While in L.A., he curated “Noah Purifoy: Junk Dada,” as well as “Fútbol: The Beautiful Game,” and oversaw major retrospectives by Glenn Ligon and Blinky Palermo. He’s also had stints at Prospect New Orleans and The Menil Collection in Houston, and co-curated a show on Basquiat at the Brooklyn Museum as an independent curator. So after traversing the country, why Miami and why now? “It’s Miami,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to be a part of the civic conversation that’s changing every day. But it’s also the building, the collection,

the staff and the curators. It’s enthralling. Our building is a major foundation for the discussion of culture here, as is the Adrienne Arsht Center.” The breathtaking structure in which he works, perched on Biscayne Bay, was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron, who presided over the Tate Modern conversion in London and 1111 Lincoln Road. Their vision of bringing “the park into the museum” is realized in a 200,000-square-foot, three-story space with moveable walls, expansive glass and horticultural life. Sirmans says the building reflects the question of how to look at and talk about art. “Museums are, at their best, catalysts for civil, humanitarian and thoughtful conversations,” he says. “They’re a place where people come together—a safe space, a town square.” As for his personal catalyst, Sirmans credits his father, whose own collection began in his office as a way to enhance the atmosphere there, highlighting predominantly American artists like Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden, and then-emerging artists like Al Loving, Bill Hutson, Joe Overstreet, Camille Billops and Candace Hill-Montgomery. “I was immediately fascinated by the characters in the art world,” recalls Sirmans. “My earliest impression was that art was a vehicle to tell stories.”

Herzog & de Meuron based the design of PĂŠrez Art Museum Miami (shown left and previous spread, left) on historic Stiltsville structures. PAMM features works by artists the likes of Jim Hodges (seen on the previous spread, right), Adler Guerrier (below), and Sean Duffy and Penelope Umbrico (bottom right). When Franklin Sirmans (left) took his post as director at PAMM, the museum had just launched an exhibit by Firelei BĂĄez (shown far left and bottom left).

NURTURE WARM WOODS AND COOL STEEL MIX TO GIVE A VENEZUELAN COUPLE A HOME IN GOLDEN BEACH THAT BRINGS THE OUTDOORS IN. WRITTEN BY ELAINE MARKOUTSAS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN HILL

Ipe planks, slate installed by Mountain Stone, white stucco and planes of glass lend visual depth to the façade. A 3-foot-tall grouping of clusias hugs the foundation to the left of the sheltered entry. Fishtail palms fringe the garage, with more green foliage spilling over a planter box in the balcony above it. Bougainvillea (bottom) cascades over a built-in slate-clad planter box that wraps around the garage, positioned beneath a scupper.

O

verlooking a canal in Golden Beach, a lush landscape dotted with neighboring mahogany and palm trees, and groves of bamboo symbolized the dream. A Venezuelan couple who love the outdoors imagined living in a custom home that blurred lines between indoors and outside on the picturesque tropical lot. “We wanted a house that allowed us to feel like we were living in nature,” says the wife, who turned to residential designer Stephanie Halfen to draw up a holistic plan for the architecture and interior architectural details, as well as the landscaping. The two were childhood friends since the fourth grade, when they were living in Caracas, so the collaboration was a natural fit. Although the owners favored modern style, they each had reservations. The husband was leery of stark white, desiring instead a warm balance as well as a tempering of light and dark elements. So for the front façade of the rectilinear building, Halfen teamed white stucco with ipe and slate, underscoring the volumetric planes. That mix aesthetically played into siting issues, as well. “We wanted to maximize the outdoor space,” says Halfen. “In order to do that, we sited the house right next to the property line in front to make the most of the area behind the home. To give the front façade depth and interest, materials were very important.” 264 / LUXESOURCE.COM

The stairway in the foyer centers on an imposing window that seems to bring a grove of bamboo plants into the house. A built-in console incorporates the steel support column as one leg; it’s anchored at the other side by the wall. Topping it is a 4-inch-high glass shadow box that allows for future display. An acrylic painting by Venezuelan artist Victor Asuaje injects bold color.

Tom Dixon’s copper globes float above leather dining chairs, all from Anima Domus. A quadriptych by Venezuelan kinetic artist Dario Perez-Flores adds a colorful dynamic to a slate wall. In the living area, leather Désirée armchairs team with a custom cocktail table atop an area rug from Addison House. The Jane sofa is by Camerich; Dalio Tile installed the flooring.

Right: Designing without upper cabinets keeps the MiaCucina kitchen visually clean. A Carrara-like quartz countertop houses a Blanco sink with a Hansgrohe faucet. White-lacquer cabinetry and driftwood-hued veneers provide a neutral but sleek backdrop for GE Monogram appliances from Ferguson. Sliding glass doors can close off the family room when desired. Below: The family room features built-in storage with touch-latch doors, floating shelves and a niche for decorative objects; the custom-designed wall by BBH Design Studio features textured Interlam panels. The leather Focus sofa is by Gyform, and the ottomans are Fatboy. A Quarry table from West Elm joins midcentury-inspired Eiffel chairs by Control Brand beneath Marset’s Tam Tam suspension lights.

The other notion to which the clients were sensitive was having a two-story space. For him, it was perhaps more a question of aesthetic—he didn’t want anything that took away intimacy. For her, it was an acoustic matter, not wanting noise to bleed between floors. Halfen handled that by carving out a dramatic two-story volume at the rear of the house, bringing greenery inside, and then lowering the ceiling height to 11 ½ feet in the spacious living area. Builder James R. “Rusty” Witt helmed construction with project manager Steve DelPonte, and professional engineer Daniel Lopez handled permitting. The six-bedroom home lives large yet comfortably. But what’s most alluring, and something the owners insisted upon, is that ever-present connection between indoors and outside. “Every room has some sort of quality that gives you the sense that nature is here,” says Halfen. “And the use of noble materials emphasizes that relationship between structure and surroundings.” Ten-foot-tall sliding glass doors stack to completely open to terraces; they also afford some privacy from the family room to the kitchen when needed. Laminated glass railings on extra-deep balconies allow unimpeded,

expansive vistas. “Outdoor areas are critical,” says Halfen. “The family loves to entertain, so a welcoming and comfortable space outside was one of our main priorities.” And the family has been taking advantage of it. “If I want to make a huge dinner for guests, I can open up the doors of the family room (adjacent to the barbecue area) and have a table there,” the wife says. “Guests never feel excluded inside or outside. It feels like one huge living room.” Enter Debbie Flicki, Hani Flicki and Sete Bassan, who also turned to the couple’s entertaining lifestyle when it came to furnishings and lighting. “They wanted to use any space at any time,” says Debbie Flicki, “not just have a formal living room for when guests come over.” Contemporary furnishings mix leather with textural fabrics such as chenille and warm woods with metal and stone. A palette of whites and grays is invigorated with pops of tangerine and art that introduces color. But nature often creates the best canvas, especially in the inviting foyer. “With the orientation of the house, how to play with different movements of the sun was very important,” says Halfen. “Natural light is crucial in all of my designs.”

“HOW TO PLAY WITH THE MOVEMENTS OF THE SUN WAS IMPORTANT; NATURAL LIGHT IS CRUCIAL IN ALL OF MY DESIGNS.” -STEPHANIE HALFEN

Left: The master bath features a large walk-in shower, tub and double trough-style sink sitting on a floating vanity that spans about 12 feet. The vanity, along with a pair of wall-hung cabinets, provides ample storage; the countertop was fabricated by Dalio Tile. Below: A Palazzo wallcovering by Innovations creates a shimmery backdrop in the master bedroom. An Italian Jesse bed and low-profile bedside tables maintain a modern, uncluttered look. But the main focus is the view, made all the more commanding with a glass rail that reveals the greenery beyond. The Huron lounge chairs and Pebble table are from West Elm.

In the 22-foot-tall stairwell, massive window panels frame a view of bamboo foliage just outside. The glass in the ceiling is tilted, facing north, letting natural light flood the space. In addition, there’s a ribbon window with a larger pane just above the floor, which is paved with river rock. White-oak treads have open risers, and powder-coatedsteel handrails are fitted with stainless-steel cables. Throughout, a large-scale porcelain flooring material was chosen for its beauty and practicality. “The owners like the look of limestone without the maintenance,” says Halfen. “They wanted something that would go with their everyday activities and lifestyle.” The wife applauds her friend for such decisions. “A lot of people can have beautiful houses,” she says, “but Stephanie is also so functional in her design.” Bridging the foyer and dining area, Debbie Flicki, Hani Flicki and Bassan designed a 14-foot-long console that is bookended by a steel support post and the wall. It defines the space as well as answers storage needs. Suspended above the glass-and-chrome dining table is a grouping of copper pendants, slightly higher than the customary height. “It makes the space feel even grander,” says Hani Flicki.

The designers also added a wall of built-in storage in the nearby family room using textured wood panels with metal reveals; toys and games are tucked away behind touch-latch doors. “There’s a big comfy sofa, where all the seats extend, and the kids stretch out and watch TV,” Debbie Flicki says. “The cabinet makes the space clean and practical.” The most minimal design is in the kitchen, which pairs sleek touch-latch cabinetry finished in white lacquer and driftwood-hued veneers with horizontal grain. The plan is unencumbered by upper cabinets, except for floating shelves on the quartz sink wall. A similar aesthetic is carried out in the master bathroom, with its floating vanity and trough-style sink. Back outside, Halfen credits the surrounding landscape and water as the catalyst for success. “The architecture and landscape are integrated through the mix of materials: ipe wood, grass, water, the porcelain tiles. It’s so rare to find so much green space in this area, especially with new homes. It’s contemporary but very warm and intimate,” she says, pointing to the structural support on the terrace, for instance, which is grand in scale but at the same time very casual and relaxed. “That’s one of the home’s best assets.”

Terraces were paved with porcelain tiles thanks to Dalio Tile. The entertaining area comes equipped with a built-in Coyote grill, Koncord barstools by Karim Rashid for Slide, and a dining table from Scan Design with Kartell chairs from Addison House. The pool was built by Poolscapes.

A structural support clad in ipe warms outdoor seating, and the overhang to which it connects provides shade. A Chill-out coffee table designed by Strand + Hvass, featuring a dual-height mechanism, pairs with Breeze chairs and Diamond sofas, all by Cane-line. Furnishings were acquired through Anima Domus.

INSPIRATION FOUND

SPEAKING “CULTURE IS THE ARTS ELEVATED TO A SET OF BELIEFS.” THIS STATEMENT MADE BY EARLY-20TH-CENTURY NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE IS THE PERFECT DESCRIPTOR FOR OUR LATEST MUSE: THE WORK OF AUSTRALIAN PENCIL ARTIST LISA LAPOINTE, WHOSE PRISMATIC LANGUAGE OF VIBRANTLY HUED SHAPES WERE INFLUENCED BY INDIGENOUS MYTHOLOGIES. TOGETHER, THE PIECES HERE UNDOUBTEDLY PROVE THE NOTION THAT MODERN ART AND DESIGN SEEK TO CREATE OBJECTS THAT TRANSCEND BOTH USE AND AESTHETICS—SUBSCRIBING TO A DEEPER MANTRA.
